Delray Beach: A Cultural Village When travelers visit downtown Delray Beach from Interstate 95, one of the first things they’ll see is the Gateway Feature welcoming them to this unique “village by the sea.”
Arts Warehouse
THIS PUBLIC ART PROJECT CONSISTS OF SIX 30-FOOT COLUMNS—UNDULATING pillars in funky colors, expressing the history and tropical spirit of Delray Beach. The project, which was 10 years in the making, is typical of a city that has always valued the arts as a vital component of its tourism, its hospitality and its vibrancy as a place where residents and locals stay entertained and engaged. Visual arts in particular cluster around the city’s bustling downtown. Art festivals such as the 57th-annual Delray Affair, the largest art fest in the Southeast United States, are a magnet for established and emerging artists from around the country, and the Cornell Art Museum at Old School Square is a year-round haven for cutting-edge contemporary art. So is the nearby Grassroots Gallery inside the Arts Garage, a multidisciplinary arts hub. The Arts Warehouse, an incubator for local artists, is at the nexus of Artists Alley, a community of working artists who open their galleries and bay doors for art walks on the first Friday of each month. If the performing arts are more your speed, Delray Beach Playhouse has been producing plays and musicals for more than 70 years from its home on picturesque Lake Ida, and the Crest Theatre at Old School Square welcomes touring shows, legendary singersongwriters, national comedians and other high-profile acts. Free live music can be heard resonating from Old School Square’s outdoor Pavilion on Friday nights in season, and from countless nightlife hot spots—like one of downtown’s newest destinations, the Tin Roof. Even the city’s library is a cultural nonprofit, hosting community events as well as its own whimsical mystery bookstore, Murder on the Beach. Most recently, boutique moviegoing has arrived in downtown Delray thanks to iPic Theaters. The brand’s new eight-screen cinema specializes in “affordable luxury,” with in-theater dining and reclining “Pod” seats
that simulate the comfort of a living room. We haven’t even mentioned the cultural institutions outside of downtown, from the tranquil escape of the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens to Frank Theatres CineBowl & Grill, a luxe multiplex and bowling alley hybrid. For a city of fewer than 16 square miles, Delray Beach’s cultural footprint is vast and growing. This publication, the third-annual Delray Beach Vacation & Culture Guide, is your road map to the arts and entertainment of this fun-loving yet sophisticated city. We spotlight 10 of Delray Beach’s don’t-miss annual events, provide an overview of the city’s fascinating history, and offer suggestions for retail and accommodations during your stay. This guide also includes an easy-to-navigate map of the city, a rundown of city services, and much more. Discover why Delray Beach is Rand McNally’s Most Fun Small Town in America.

These yearly gatherings in Delray Beach attract art lovers, Zen seekers, foodies, holiday revelers and much more.
Delray Affair
The Delray Affair
Downtown Delray Beach; (561) 279-0907 delrayaffair.com Fifty-seven years ago, April’s Delray Affair launched as a hometown festival to support local businesses: Retailers would display arts and crafts, and farmers would sell the last of their produce and horticulture for the season. It sold so many gladiolas that it was originally christened the South Florida Gladiola Festival. “Now the largest arts and crafts festival under the Delray sun,” says Festival Management Group’s Nancy Stewart, who produces the event for the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. “It is the major fundraiser for the Delray Beach Chamber.” This gradual transformation has elevated the Affair’s prestige to encompass the international exhibition it has become. Some 500 artists and crafters from 30 states and 12 countries typically participate in the three-day event, renting booths along a 12-block stretch of Atlantic Avenue, from the Tennis Center all the way to the Intracoastal. More than 110,000 visitors patronize the Delray Affair to view and purchase everything from handmade rugs to fine art, at prices from $10 to upwards of $10,000. Pop-up musical performances at three downtown intersections, along with special “Delray Affair After Dark” evening programming, ensure that this affair to remember extends well beyond its 6 p.m. wrap-up.
Savor the Avenue
Downtown Delray Beach; (561) 243-1077, downtowndelraybeach.com For one night a year, the only traffic along active Atlantic Avenue is that of restaurant wait staff, swiftly serving more than 1,000 patrons on what has been called the nation’s longest dining table. That’s the concept behind spring’s Savor the Avenue, in which up to 20 Delray Beach restaurants offer elegant, four-course, al fresco meals on 1,300 feet of communal table space spread along the double-yellow line of downtown’s main street. “It’s a culinary dining experience that demonstrates the best of downtown Delray Beach,” says Laura Simon, of the city’s Downtown Development Authority, which co-presents the event. “It is an evening under the stars that gives you a taste of some of our finest restaurants. It showcases what they do best and the

best amenity Delray has, which is Atlantic Avenue.” Simon says Savor the Avenue is the city’s most important foodie event. It draws roughly half of its attendance from nonlocals, who plan their Delray vacations around it. Its appeal stretches generations, from couples in their ‘20s to retirees. “Delray Beach is such a sociable city, and the ambience and energy of Savor the Avenue, combined with the quality of our chefs and service, are a perfect fit.”
100-Foot Christmas Tree
Old School Square, 51 N Swinton Avenue (561) 279-1380, 100ftchristmastree.com Not many Christmas trees are important enough to warrant their own website, but Delray Beach’s towering holiday decoration is no ordinary tree. Its jaw-dropping height—if you count the star at its top, it scrapes the skies at 110 feet—is a spectacle to behold for Delray visitors and residents each winter. It stays lit through New Year’s Day from its idyllic location at Old School Square Park. “It’s giant and beautiful on its own, but what’s amazing is that you can walk inside of it,” says Stephanie Immelman, executive director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. “There are four houses inside, and all four have scenes inside them.” In 2017, the Marketing Cooperative replaced an older version of the tree with a brand-new aluminum edition with more sparkle than ever before: It’s festooned with nearly 18,000 lights and more than 28,000 ornaments, and contains more than 49 million “needles.” If a taller Christmas tree exists, Immelman doesn’t know about it; it’s no surprise this yuletide marvel was selected as the best Christmas tree in Florida by Travel & Leisure.

Lantern Festival
4000 Morikami Park Road; (561) 495-0233, morikami.org Upbeat festivities and tranquil reflection share the emotional canvas of the Lantern Festival, one of the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens’ signature events. Hosted the third Saturday in October, the Lantern Festival is inspired by Japan’s Bon Festival, a three-day period in which ancestors from the spirit realm are said to revisit the living. In the Morikami’s version, a slate of afternoon and evening activities—from Japanese folk dancers and thunderous taiko drummers to children’s activities and a street fair of food and gift vendors—culminates in an iconic lantern floating ceremony in which participants usher paper lanterns, containing messages to lost loved ones, across the venue’s Morikami Lake. The ceremony symbolizes guiding the spirits back to their world after the celebrations have ended. The Morikami sends everyone home with a fireworks display. If you’d like to experience this singular event, don’t wait until the month of the fest: The Lantern Festival offers tickets through online presale only, and it always sells out.
Delray Beach Craft Beerfest
Old School Square, 51 N Swinton Avenue (561) 243-7922 | dbcraftbeerfest.org No city with the hipster cred of Delray Beach would be complete without its own craft beer fest, and our centrally located version in downtown Delray Beach has been lauded as the region’s best. Channeling the con-

History of Delray Beach From its origins as a place of refuge to its welcoming embrace of African-American settlers and Japanese farmers, the charming coastal city has been open to all.
Carl Dawson Photography
TODAY, DELRAY BEACH IS THE SOUTH FLORIDA paradise other cities aspire to be—a teeming center of fine and casual dining, boutique shops and bustling nightlife, lapping waves and meandering gardens. It wasn’t always so. In fact, many locals still remember Delray Beach before this gradual transformation, when Atlantic Avenue, its central downtown thoroughfare, was an unpaved road. It took the big dreams and everyday persistence of a few pioneer families, along with an industrious railroad tycoon whose name has become synonymous with Florida, to lay the civic and cultural foundations that give Delray Beach its multifaceted identity. The history of Delray Beach dates to 1868, when Wisconsin natives William and Sara Gleason began purchasing thousands of acres of land in various locations in Florida including in what is now the City of Delray Beach. William, who assumed the Lieutenant Governorship of Florida from 1868 to 1870, ran a Delray real estate empire with his two sons, W.H.H. and George, selling property to many of the area’s earliest settlers. Before it became a city, Delray Beach was a place of refuge. The Orange Grove House of Refuge No. 3, a haven for the shipwrecked, opened in 1876. The House’s second and last refuge keeper, Annie Andrews, established the region’s first post office address. In 1885, industrialist Henry Flagler purchased the Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Halifax River Railway in his efforts to build a railroad to connect the entire east coast of Florida. Flagler was granted millions of acres of land from the State of Florida to use in the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway. He also purchased thousands of acres of land along the east coast of Florida, including hundreds of acres in the area now known as Delray Beach. U.S. Congressman William Linton, one of Delray’s
most important pioneers, arrived from Michigan in 1894, purchasing land from the Gleasons and Flagler. With a civil engineer, he helped create the town Linton, which eventually became Delray Beach. Today, busy Linton Boulevard is named in his honor. In 1894 the first school was established in Linton. It was established by the African-American settlers. The African-American community was large enough to petition Dade County for a school. (This area was then a part of Dade County until 1909, when Palm Beach County was established.) That school, known as “(Dade County) School #4, Colored,” was located in Linton on Blackmer Street, currently known as Historic 5th Avenue. As with many such pioneer schools, it is thought to have been built with palmetto fronds. Historic 5th Avenue was also the commercial hub of the “colored” community. Located north and south of Atlantic Avenue were businesses that supported the segregated community, including grocery and dry goods stores, gas stations, an ice-cream parlor, movie theater, bakery, pressing club (dry cleaner), barber shop and other businesses. By 1895, development of the Town of Linton had begun. Atlantic Avenue was platted next to a rock wall partially surrounding an ancient orange grove. Linton’s black settlers opened the town’s first church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, in 1896. This was also the year of completion for Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway route, whose local depot and railroad contributed substantially to the town’s growth and its farming economy. As the 20th century loomed, a full-service town began to take shape. Between 1896 and 1898, a school was established at the site of what is now Old School Square, a five-building arts, entertainment and education campus. In 1898, the Town of Linton officially became “Delray,” after William Linton defaulted on his land payments. W.W. Blackmer, a town leader, suggested the name “Delray,” which derived from the name of a town located near Detroit. A Ladies Improvement Society launched in 1902 and would prove influential to the town’s growth, spearheading projects including a cemetery, a public library, Atlantic Avenue improvements and a town hall. A British ship, the SS Inchulva, notoriously wrecked near the south end of Delray’s municipal beach in 1903. Early settlers of African descent who emigrated GREATER DELRAY BEACH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

History of Delray Beach
Delray Beach Historic Districts Within the boundaries of the City of Delray Beach, there are five historic districts. Each of these reflects the unique heritage of the city in various ways. Many of the districts allow both residential and limited commercial use; check with the Delray Chamber or the City of Delray Beach for specific uses and restrictions. from the Bahamas initiated the rescue of the survivors. The SS Inchulva Delray Wreck Site is now a popular diving spot. Adding to early Delray’s cultural melting pot, early Japanese settlers came to the town for shopping, recreation and civic events. In 1904, one settler, Jo Sakai, established Yamato, a Japanese agricultural colony south of Delray. Other Japanese settlers included George Morikami, who farmed in the region for 65 years, ultimately donating 200 acres of farmland to Palm Beach County, preserved today as the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in western Delray Beach. In 1911, two years after the official creation of Palm Beach County, John Shaw Sundy became the first mayor of the Town of Delray, serving seven terms. His legacy lives on in the Sundy House, a popular restaurant. A year later, Delray Progress, the town’s first newspaper, published its debut issue. Delray Beach finally became a city in 1927. Having formed its Chamber of Commerce, chartered its first Kiwanis Club and completed its first hotels (Casa Del Ray, The Colony), Delray’s population reached 2,333 by 1930—and 3,737 by 1940. Writers and artists—especially cartoonists—turned Delray Beach into a winter retreat beginning in the 1930s. The Delray Affair, which has become one of the largest arts and crafts festivals in the southeastern United States, began in 1962. Two years later, the suspension of passenger rail service on the FEC railroad signaled the end of an era—one that the Delray Beach Historical Society, established the same year, helped chronicle. Census population in Delray Beach reached 34,325 by 1980, thanks in part to a boom in Haitian emigration. In 1987, a year after its Diamond Jubilee, the city formed four Historic Districts and established Pineapple Grove, today one of downtown’s most eclectic attractions. The city scored an All-America City award, recognizing communities with engaged citizenries, in 1993, and would receive a second All-America City award in 2001. That year also saw the opening of the Spady Museum, honoring the region’s AfricanAmerican, Haitian and Caribbean-American legacies. More than 60,500 residents live in Delray Beach, per the 2010 Census. The following year, the city celebrated its Centennial of Incorporation. In 2017, Delray Beach secured its third All-America City Award, becoming the only city in Florida to achieve this honor.

Old School Square Historic District
Located along the original north-south axis of town, this district is comprised of 15 blocks with 176 structures, of which 101 are contributing historic buildings. Each Pre-World War I and II Vernacular architectural style in the city can be found here. This district allows for some business use.
Nassau Park Historic District
Seventeen one- and two-story Cape Cod Colonial Revival cottages make up this neighborhood. The district recalls the prosperity, pleasure and style that was the essence of 1930s resort life in the city. Distinctive architectural elements such as horizontal clapboard siding with multipaned windows and elaborate doorways define these classic cottages.
Del-Ida Park Historic District
The district consists of 58 acres containing 151 structures, of which 47 contribute to the Mediterranean Revival style and Craftsman Bungalow designs. One of Delray’s first planned developments, the district features a unique, diagonal street pattern with curvilinear corners creating triangular blocks with varying street frontages. This district allows for some business use.
Marina Historic District
Located along the Intracoastal Waterway south of Atlantic Avenue and built around the town’s City Marina, the district has 96 buildings, 51 of which are of historic note in a variety of architectural styles. Streamline Moderne, Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival and bungalows blend with the distinctive shaded roads and subtropical landscape.
West Settlers Historic District
The West Settlers Historic District is associated with the pioneering African-American families who helped found and settle the city. Education and religion were the two most important institutions in the early days of the neighborhood. A school, three churches and a Masonic lodge were all established within the West Settlers Historic District between 1895 and 1920. The district contains 53 structures, 23 of which have historic status. This district allows for some business use.
