Message from the President and CEO As we compiled the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County’s accomplishments for this annual report, we found ourselves smiling quite a bit. As you read these pages, we think you’ll understand why. Without a doubt, our 2012-2013 program and fiscal year was one of our best on record. To cite just a few highlights, we completed our first full year as occupants of our wonderful Robert M. Montgomery, Jr. Building in downtown Lake Worth. Our headquarters has met our expectations in every possible way, including allowing us to serve as a focal point for cultural tourism in the county and greatly expand our services – including exhibition opportunities for artists. We were able to do more in arts education, including establishing a new fund that will make it possible for children to go on cultural expeditions throughout the county – a very exciting proposition to be sure. Our revenues increased and our marketing initiatives realized great success. All in all, it was a very good year, and we greatly appreciate our Board of Directors, our staff, our partners and all of our contributors who helped make this possible. We invite you to continue this journey with us in the year ahead. We think you’ll be smiling, too.
Message from the Chairman It is difficult to believe that another year has passed, but when I see the results produced by the Cultural Council, I realize that time may have gone quickly, but the hard work of the staff and Board of Directors has paid dividends. Increased investment from our donors and from the County has made these effective programs possible. I believe that the time is always right to express gratitude to everyone who supports the continuing work of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. During the past year, the Council has been fortunate to receive many generous contributions from individuals, companies, foundations and other organizations in our community. Coupled with increased revenue from public sources, this support enabled us to significantly expand our goals of enhancing area cultural organizations, meeting the needs of local artists and helping arts education programs to flourish. We are exceptionally grateful for your confidence in our mission and the investment you make in Palm Beach County’s future. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of the

The Council’s Department of Arts and Cultural Education is committed to providing opportunities for all children in Palm Beach County to experience arts and culture. By educating arts and cultural educators, promoting programs to teachers and parents, and advocating to decision-makers about the importance of arts and culture, the Council hopes to elevate the quality of education programs and increase the number of children accessing arts and culture. Whether arts education manifests itself in a classroom, on a field trip, at a summer camp or in countless other ways, the Cultural Council is steadfastly committed to ensuring that such experiences continue to be available for children in Palm Beach County. The Korman Fund for Cultural Expeditions, a brand new grants program for arts and cultural education, was initiated. Realizing the need for more students to have hands-on visits to arts and cultural venues, an application process was established that enabled arts and cultural organizations that are members of the Council to apply for funding to transport elementary school students from local schools to live performances and museum experiences. More than just your garden variety “field trip,” these “cultural expeditions” tie arts and cultural experiences to curriculum. This program was generously funded by Bert and Sallie Korman. A second Cultural Expedition Fund was also established by The Kenan Trust. Both funds were initiated in this fiscal year and begin the following fiscal year. Sometimes the most important activity is just getting to know one another and learning something new. That’s what the Cultural Educators meetings are all about. Facilitated monthly by the Council to support educators, a diverse range of topics related to the current educational trends were offered, including arts education, arts integration, curriculum planning, advocacy, collaboration, arts and literacy-unexpected connections and technology. A total of 300 people attended these monthly workshops - the largest attendance to date in a single year. Year two of the “Full STEAM Ahead” project paired five arts and cultural organizations, including the Palm Beach Zoo, Jurassic Parts, the Arthur Marshall Foundation, Pine Jog Environmental Center and Resource Depot, with Pioneer Park Elementary School in Belle Glade to provide arts-integrated lessons in science. Funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, this was the second year of a three-year pilot project. Based on lessons from year one, two major changes were made to provide better results: The five participating cultural organizations were paired with one grade level rather than many and two teaching artists were hired to reinforce the science lessons taught by the cultural organizations. Students received special lessons at least once per month and evaluation results showed an increased knowledge of the science curriculum.

Other activities included a field trip to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium for every child in the school. A culminating event at the end of the school year enabled parents to visit the five STEAM partner cultural organizations and even take part in some lessons especially prepared for them. Ongoing education for teachers and educators is a part of the “Full STEAM Ahead” project. A professional development workshop for all Pioneer Park teachers and the five STEAM partners was provided as the new school year began. Basic awareness of arts education opportunities is part of the Council’s ongoing work. In 2013 the Council went green by eliminating the printed version of the Educators Guide to Art and Culture in Palm Beach County and creating 12,000 brochures that directed educators to an online catalog of events and opportunities. The online catalog not only enabled the Council to more easily handle updates and additions, but provided valuable links to arts organizations and the school district while increasing accessibility. Another strategy for alerting educators and parents about arts education opportunities was the eighth annual Summer Cultural Guide, an online resource with information about summer cultural activities for young people. To promote the guide, many organizations offered camp scholarships and free memberships. More than $10,000 in scholarships and memberships were provided to 45 children or families as a result of the Council’s coordination and promotion. While most of the Council’s work associated with education is delivered directly to educators, this spring school children were invited to the Council’s headquarters in Lake Worth to visit the galleries. On April 16, 2013, sixth graders from the Sacred Heart School saw the “Artist as Authors” exhibition and received a tour from Nichole Hickey, the Cultural Council’s artist’s services coordinator. In addition, the Council believes that a regional perspective is important in furthering innovative and effective programs in arts education. Working with the South Florida Cultural Consortium, a regional planning organization composed of the arts agencies from the five southern Florida counties (Palm Beach, Martin, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe), the Department of Arts and Cultural Education continued the process of research and collaboration required to create a regional teaching artists certification program. This project will help ensure quality arts education in classrooms and increase employment opportunities for teaching artists.

In 2012-2013, the Council hosted 14 exhibitions: five shows with 217 artworks in the main exhibition space plus nine artists with 79 artworks in the Lawrence A. Sanders Foundation Artist Resource Center. In total, almost 300 original works of art from Palm Beach County were exhibited, providing new opportunities for the artists and almost $10,000 in sales. The main space shows included: • Tom Otterness - This artist created the 17-panel frieze in the Milton and Tamar Maltz Lobby of the Council’s headquarters. The exhibition included 37 two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects demonstrating the artist’s range and stylistic whimsy. Artist as Author - With guest curator Elaine Meier, 14 • county artists were invited to display their work alongside books they have published. This show included 80 artworks including photography, poetry, drawings, painting, prints, sculpture, musical scores, and architecture. Record crowds attended three panel-style lectures with the artists: photographer, Harry Benson; JoAnne Berkow, realist painter and gallery owner; interior designer, Geoffrey Bradfield; syndicated cartoonist, Carlos Castellanos; celebrity portrait photographer, Nancy Ellison; poet, Stephen Gibson; collage artist, Bruce Helander; design director emeritus of Tiffany & Co. and visual artist, John Loring; composer/lyricist and concept developers, John Mercurio and Andrew Kato; painter and sculptor, Edwina Sandys; still life photographer, Barry Seidman; architect, Jeffery W. Smith and painter, Sandra Thompson. County Contemporary: All Media Juried Show. The • second juried exhibition presented by the Council attracted an outstanding response. Through Juried Art Services in West Palm Beach, 133 artists submitted almost 450 artworks. Juror Mark Richard Leach, executive director of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, chose 36 artists and 44 works. The following artists received cash prizes: Isabel Gouveia, Best of Show, $2,000; Virginia McKinney, second place, $1,000 and Dennis Aufiery, third place, $500. The public was encouraged to vote for their favorite artwork and Carin Wagner won the “People’s Choice Award” and $500. Leach also offered his process and ideas on jurying a show to a group of 34 patrons.

Palm Beach County Art Teachers Association - The • exhibition paid homage to the men and women who too often are sequestered in the classroom and unknown to the public and collectors. Works in media ranging from bronze sculpture to photography to unique light installations encouraged sales and offered exposure for the efforts of the 18 participating teachers. Artist presentations enabled the teachers to speak about what inspires them and to demystify their artistic process. Lectures by artists and curators are another important aspect of the Council’s programming. Nine tours, lectures and presentations welcomed 307 people to the building. • Solo exhibitions in the Lawrence A. Sanders Foundation Artist Resource Center were popular. Underwritten annually by JPMorgan Chase, the well-attended exhibitions included artistic styles ranging from plein air painting to abstract collage. Exhibitions in this space also showcased collaborations with other cultural organizations, including two works of interactive sculpture that previewed the Kinetic Symposium in Boynton Beach in 2013. During the summer, the Council worked with The Lawrence E. Will Museum: A Museum of the Glades to present We
Were Here: The People of the Water, an eight-panel series highlighting an ancient culture in Belle Glade, and with the SafetyNet Program’s teaching artists at HomeSafe to display Our Eyes, Our World, an exhibition from the child’s perspective on healing and life after violence. Monthly artist meetings were beneficial not only for networking but also for education. Topics included insight on how art gallery owners seek out new artists, tips on writing a press release and how to effectively promote oneself. The Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach store in the Robert M. Montgomery Building consigns work from artists, artisans and authors while showcasings the cultural organizations the Council supports. A portion of all sales benefits programs for artists. Store revenue doubled during the year to over $16,000 and inventory doubled, as well. To date, over 110 consignors and approximately 3,050 items have been placed and/or sold in the store. New store branding culminated in a fresh look that included new bags, tags and custom-packaged chocolates. The Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach store also creates revenue for the Council’s artist education and exhibition programs and gives the public an affordable opportunity to own unique pieces of art and connect with the artists. Additionally, association with the store provides local artists with marketing opportunities and press coverage not typically available. Trunk shows feature the work of select artists both at the store location and at other Council event locations.

Green Uniquely Palm Beach store and galleries offer cultural information and entertainment to local, national and even international consumers. Meanwhile, meeting spaces such as the Sallie and Berton E. Korman Education and Training Center and Mr. & Mrs. Robert M. Montgomery, Jr. Conference Room provide a professional environment for business partners, grantees and numerous committees. Through the year, the Council welcomed over 7,500 visitors to its Lake Worth home. The Council has provided marketing and promotional services for Palm Beach County for more than 30 years, and last year was a banner year in garnering attention for our region. A new tagline,
Discover the Palm Beaches – Florida’s Cultural Capital, was adopted, which immediately resonated with cultural tourists. The subtext, achieved through a new advertising campaign, is that arts and culture offerings in the county are sophisticated, varied and critically acclaimed. Website traffic had triple digit increases during the year. The Palm Beach County Arts Calendar, an Artsopolis Network platform for user-submitted arts and cultural events, has proven to be a huge success since its launch in 2012. Traffic to the Council’s websites more than doubled to 93,415 visits (105 percent over 2012). The sites’ reach is growing, as evidenced by a 127 percent increase in unique visitors. The Cultural Council implemented Google Grants’ AdWords for Nonprofits search engine marketing campaign in 2013, with a maximum potential budget of $10,000 per month toward pay-perclick advertising. Throughout the year, advertising campaigns in O, The Oprah
Magazine, National Geographic Traveler and Visit Florida publications generated over 26,000 leads. Readers were reached via postcard and email to explain more about the Council and the multitude of arts and cultural offerings in the county. Readers who displayed an explicit interest in learning more were added to an email marketing list of over 6,000 names and others were included
The Council continued its partnership with Channel 20 television, producing five episodes of Cultural Capital during the year. New production goals, new filming techniques and a more interactive format were introduced to improve the show. Future programming and a more aggressive schedule will reflect these changes. In September, the Council participated in the Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Orlando with a booth on the convention center floor. One of the relationships arising from the event was a partnership with BrandUSA, the agency for Discover America, the website dedicated to marketing the United States overseas. A video project is scheduled for 2014. The Cultural Council worked with Discover the Palm Beaches on a press event in New York at the Museum of Modern Art for top-tier journalists from publications ranging from The Wall Street
Journal to the online site DuJour. Through numerous contacts, the Council was able to further the message of Florida’s Cultural
Capital. By the end of the fiscal year, a new marketing plan was created that integrates traditional and social media, community engagement strategies, the continued promotion of cultural tourism to northeastern feeder markets and Florida drive markets, and support of local events and cultural organizations. In the coming year, advertising buys will be directed outside the county with a percentage going to local print and online publications to support in-market efforts.
on a secondary list of about 17,000 potential subscribers. The Council made significant strides in increasing its consumer base on social media. By September, Twitter followers increased by 89 percent and Facebook “likes” grew by 29 percent. The Robert M. Art on the Road In 2012, the Cultural Council initiated a new educational program to bring awareness to local artists, art galleries and studios in Palm Beach County. Art on the Road takes guests to visit local artists and studios and promotes buying art locally. This program is designed to demystify the process of walking into a gallery and enhances that experience by introducing attendees to studio and gallery owners and even private collections. For attendees, this experience is also educational, as gallery owners describe their creative process, types of artistic media and what inspires them.
