Message from the Chairman Last year was another momentous one at the Cultural Council, and the hard work of the staff and Board of Directors has led to some impressive results. Increased investment from our donors and from the county has made these effective programs possible. I am grateful to everyone who supports the continuing work of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County because those who invest make this important work possible. Both private donations and public investment grew significantly last year, and the combination of the two is essential. As a result, we are able to significantly expand our goals of enhancing area cultural organizations, meeting the needs of local artists and helping arts education programs to flourish. With your help, we are together making a positive difference in our community through the arts. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of the Cultural Council, thank you.
Message from the President and CEO Gathering the information and images for this important annual publication is an exercise in gratitude. This year I was struck by the generosity of our donors and our elected officials, who continue to put their faith and trust in us to steward funding to do great work in the community. Activity at the Council was at an all-time high this fiscal year. A few highlights include: 200 artists served The County Commission voting in favor of an increase in “bed tax” and allocating more than $1 million per year to the Council for promoting arts and culture
Berton E. Korman Chair
Recognizing outstanding leaders in arts and culture and the bi-annual Muse Awards Initiating new grant opportunities like the Sallie and Berton E. Korman Fund that sends kids on cultural expeditions Financially, the Council continues to expand services while garnering increased philanthropic and earned support. The balance sheet reflects our work toward these goals. It was an outstanding year, and we greatly appreciate our Board of Directors, our staff, our partners and all of our contributors who helped make this possible. We hope to see you at a Council event soon.

In 2014, the Grants Department launched two new programs, Cultural Expeditions and Power2give, to expand educational experiences for students and build capacity within arts and cultural organizations in the county. Combined, the Cultural Council’s seven grant programs provided a total of $3,611,705 in grant funding to 87 different cultural organizations and individual artists. Funding for these programs came from several sources, including county hotel tax revenue, Palm Beach County ad valorem revenue, State of Florida license plate revenue, corporate philanthropy and private donors.
Cultural Expeditions Cultural Expeditions is a grant program funded in part by the Sallie and Berton E. Korman Arts Education Fund and the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust to provide cultural expeditions for elementary students in Palm Beach County through a competitive grant process. The goal of the program is to augment, expand and increase the number of cultural expeditions to students throughout Palm Beach County. In the first year, 10 cultural organizations were awarded over $10,000 to cover the cost of transporting and/or admitting 1,151 students from Title I schools to a cultural museum, performance or event.
Power2give In September 2014, the Cultural Council launched Power2give in Palm Beach County. Power2give is a national online crowdfunding platform designed for arts and/or cultural non-profits to diversify methods of fundraising, increase the donor base and generate support for projects up to $10,000. In just the first month of operation, 20 local arts and cultural organizations posted projects on Power2give and generated $20,576. Additionally, an anonymous donor matched the online donations, bringing the total raised to $41,298. Of the 20 projects posted, three were fully funded within the first 30 days. Sixtyfive percent of the donors were new to the cultural organizations and the average gift by a new donor was $87. Power2give is a flexible way to raise funds when cultural organizations have a need that may not fit into a traditional grant program. For example, the Lake Worth Playhouse needed a new rehearsal hall
floor. After several years of countless rehearsals and classes, the floor was damaged and needed to be replaced. The Lake Worth Playhouse reached out to its constituents, theatre patrons, website viewers and partners through Power2give to support Operation: Happy Feet. The project was fully funded and the floor was repaired.
Privately Funded Programs In addition to Cultural Expeditions and Power2give, the Grants Department continues to expand its grant-making efforts by partnering with corporations, private foundations and donors to fund cultural organizations in areas of building capacity, arts education and employing professional artists. The Capacity Building Project is a competitive grant program funded by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust and designed to evolve and strengthen mid-sized cultural organizations through planned growth, increased fundraising abilities and the implementation of best practices in governance. Training and capacity building are related to business practices, including: grant writing, fundraising, governance, financial management, marketing, public relations, audience development, arts education and integration techniques. SmARTBiz is a grant program created collaboratively by the Cultural Council and PNC Bank. The mission of the SmARTBiz grant program is based on the philosophy that “Good Arts in a Community = Good Quality of Life = Strong Business Development.” The program has two components: grant-making to build capacity within cultural organizations and professional development for leaders and professionals working in the cultural industry. This year, the SmARTBiz Committee approved grant awards totaling $44,782 to improve effectiveness and/or increase efficiency to 11 cultural organizations, and provided 250 people with professional development training.

Collaborations are an important part of the Council’s arts education work, and a recent joint effort with the Children’s Services Council resulted in an impactful and meaningful art project. In September, 65 pairs of ceramic footprints were unveiled in a Lake Worth neighborhood garden center to bring attention to infant mortality — 65 infants died last year in Palm Beach County. Held during National Infant Mortality Awareness Month, the installation was one of 10 art collaborations with Teaching Artists in communities where economic, health, social The arts are an essential part of a thriving society. will help ensure quality arts education, both in and out of school, for South Florida youth, as well as contribute to the region’s burgeoning reputation for being an arts and culture destination. The Cultural Educator’s Committee (CEdC) remains an integral program to the Council’s arts education work toward connecting teachers, the school district, cultural institutions, Teaching Artists and non-profits. CEdC members and their constituents attend monthly meetings at a host-cultural organization’s site for professional development, networking and marketing. Arts and cultural education opportunities are further disseminated to educators, parents and the community Council and its efforts within our community. Full STEAM Ahead was funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin counties. Award-winning music educator Eric Booth of The Julliard School, Stanford University and The Kennedy Center has defined a Teaching Artist as “a practicing professional artist with the complementary skills, curiosities and sensibilities of an educator, who can effectively engage a wide range of people in learning experiences in, through and about the arts.” The Council continued work this year with the South Florida Cultural Consortium and Arts for Learning/Miami on piloting a Regional Teaching Artist Certification program that will endorse and recognize exemplary educators who are at the forefront of their field. In the coming year the Education Department will partner with the school district on a $1.2 million dollar grant; “Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination Grant” awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, and this spring the Council will be represented in Chicago at the annual Americans for the Arts Conference. In addition, to further enhance the brand, the Council began using Palm Beach County artists’ work in all collateral pieces, including the annual report, cultural calendar, invitations and digital products such as eblasts. In 2014, the Cultural Council laid the groundwork for a totally integrated marketing communications plan. From a strong platform of record-breaking earned media, social media engagement and website visits, the Council engaged two marketing firms to assist with advertising creative and media placement. In addition, research and analysis of the website began in order to redesign the site to focus on cultural tourism and a robust South Florida calendar. The site also featured improved presentation and navigation for all parts of the business, including development, membership, grants and artists’ programming.
Advertising The Cultural Council was awarded $500,000 from the county as part of a stimulus program. Earmarked for media placement, a campaign was designed for the New York and Boston markets. The new advertising campaign will begin in January of 2015 and run in winter, spring and fall with public relations, event marketing and promotion deployed to encourage tourism and audience growth in the summer months. In 2014, the Council created an interim advertising campaign in-house, which was awarded the Highest Attention-Getting ad by “Florida Trend” magazine. Staking out new, international ground, the Council worked with the destination marketing organization BrandUSA to create video and digital content in Portuguese (South American market) and English (European market). This exciting program had the Council filming around the county to showcase various arts and cultural assets and supporting our member organizations. Dramatic photography and persuasive copy were provided by the Council team to enhance the videos.

Events The Cultural Council aggressively sought to garner attention from tourism influencers. Participation in annual events such as the Florida Huddle and National Travel & Tourism Day provided the opportunity for the Council to showcase the arts and cultural assets in the county. At the Florida Huddle, 500 participants experienced performances by internationally renowned baritone Luis Ledesma for Palm Beach Opera, Ballet Palm Beach, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Faith’s Place Steel Drum Band and demonstrations by the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Collateral was distributed, the Council was front and center throughout and CEO Rena Blades offered a welcome that included information on the sophistication and variety of art and culture in Palm Beach County. At National Travel & Tourism Day, the Council arranged for several performances at a rally held at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County that resulted in significant coverage on local television stations and in print and electronic media. One of the highlights of 2014 was the Council’s participation in the Governor’s Conference on Tourism. To ensure that sponsor Visit Florida and industry participants from throughout the state were aware of art and culture in Palm Beach County, the Council produced an unforgettable performance at the firstnight dinner attended by the governor. The Council’s mash-up

A video of the event went viral, aided by partnerships with Olympusat Entertainment and local media. Vanilla Ice ramped up his Twitter feed by posting the video and an endless stream of comments during the dinner event. Of course the money shot every media outlet hoped for — Governor Scott with the rapper — made it out of the county into national and international news. The results were spectacular: Internet news coverage: total unique views 96,220,226, publicity value: $34,518 Broadcast news coverage: total Nielsen households 191,835, publicity value: $18,529 Print news coverage: total circulation 1,122,568, publicity value: $13,989 TOTAL (all media) Vanilla Ice impressions: 97,534,629 TOTAL (all media) Vanilla Ice value: $67,036 Total YouTube views of the performance video to date: 11,517 Facebook post: 5,090 people reached with 169 likes, comments & shares
Public Relations The Cultural Council’s work in getting the word out on the extraordinary cultural offerings in America’s first resort destination took a giant step forward. Earned media — public relations placements — broke all previous records in 2014. 744 million earned media impressions inside Palm Beach County worth $802,000 686 million earned media impressions outside Palm Beach County worth $586,000 The Council was honored with the South Florida Bernays Award for Best Public Relations Campaign surrounding programming — in this case the exhibition, “The Deep and The Shallow.” In addition, art&culture magazine was honored with

Social Media A new strategic approach to social media invigorated the brand, drove cultural tourism and increased exposure to what the Cultural Council has to offer. After an initial audit, a plan was put in place to elevate postings, affirm the Council’s strong, authoritative voice and move from curating content to creating original content. All postings are now aligned with larger marketing initiatives and are positioned as a touchpoint of the communications plan. Initial results are impressive: Facebook likes: increased 27% Facebook referrals to website: increased 17% Twitter followers: increased 50% YouTube video views: increased 34%
Partnerships Partnerships were very much a part of the Cultural Council’s work in marketing. Working with WPBT2 (PBS Miami reaching from the Keys to Melbourne) resulted in the Council coproducing four segments on art and culture in Palm Beach County — two of which aired nationally. The Council continued work with “ArtsBeat” (NPR Miami 500,000 listeners) by contributing information and suggestions on what to see and do in The Palm Beaches every month. And the half-hour show “Cultural Capital” continued each month on Channel 20.
Cultural Concierge A five-year business plan for the Cultural Concierge was completed. This program will customize arts-related experiences for tourists, conventions and planners. The Breakers, Marriott Singer Island Resort & Spa, Four Seasons Palm Beach, Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa and PGA National Resort & Spa are the pilot program’s hotel partners, and the Sports Commission is a collaborating partner.

Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach Store The Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach Store in the Robert M. Montgomery Jr. building consigns work from artists, artisans, cultural institutions and authors, and a portion of all sales benefits programs for artists. In comparison to last year, the Cultural Council increased the amount of store revenue by 12 percent, with gross sales of over $18,000. To date, more than 120 consignors and approximately 4,000 items have been placed and/or sold in the store. In addition to providing a showcase for local artists, the Roe Green Uniquely Palm Beach Store is important to the Council because net proceeds support the Council’s artist education and exhibition programs. It also provides the public an affordable opportunity to own unique pieces of art and personally connect with the artist and the story behind each piece. Additionally, association with the store has the potential to provide local artists with marketing opportunities and press coverage not typically available to them. Trunk shows feature the work of select artists both at the store location and at other events, such as Culture & Cocktails, in order to provide more visibility and access to artist members.
Public Programs — General The Cultural Council’s Evenings at the Council is a bimonthly happening with a special appeal to the public to enjoy live music by local musicians, refreshments and art appreciation in the gallery and store. Evenings at the Council has proven to be a success because the atmosphere is casual and upscale with the venue representing both established and up-and-coming local artists. Musicians such as JC Dwyer, Dennica Pearl Worrell, the improvisational jazz group SugaWack and many more have been
service to a diverse population.
Music Membership Program The Cultural Council launched a new membership program to help promote and support both emerging talent and seasoned musicians. As the program evolves, member benefits are refined to meet the needs of this large, creative community. In addition to providing assistance with career promotion, networking and professional development, more and more the Council is able to connect high-quality musicians with various performance opportunities in the county, including events at the Council space and many other venues.
Lake Worth: Arts-Centric Strategies as a Catalyst for Economic Growth Upon moving to Lake Worth in 2012, the Cultural Council has been a partner to city government leaders and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The strategy of bringing economic vitality to the city through the arts is a longterm project. Some important successes this year: The Council increased its presence and activity during Lake Worth events; grants were pursued that would underwrite a proper and thorough plan for this effort; and collaborations with artists living and working in Lake Worth were increased. More positive media coverage of the arts in Lake Worth was garnered and the city is beginning to have a solid reputation as a place where great art is made. New arts-related businesses were attracted to the city, most importantly the Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts, which during the year successfully made a proposal to transform an old train depot into a foundry and glassblowing facility. The Council remains enthusiastically committed to these efforts, which will be years in the making.

Art on the Road Art on the Road is a program that takes guests to local artist studios, galleries and private collections and promotes buying Individual philanthropy in Palm Beach County is growing, and the Cultural Council has been the fortunate recipient of some important philanthropic gifts this year. Private funding is very important to the Council and the Board of Directors prioritizes the growth of private funding for programs. In fact, over the last nine years, the Council’s operating revenues have transitioned to annual revenues that comprise 40 percent from the county and 60 percent from private philanthropic gifts. The largest increases have come from annual and major gifts that are designated to programs such as arts education for schoolchildren in Palm Beach County and artists’ programs. The Council is grateful to everyone who has made the arts a priority in their giving plans.
Annual Fund Donations Gifts to the Cultural Council’s Annual Fund provide muchneeded, unrestricted support that helps sustain the Council’s daily operations and fund many important priorities, including: support for field trips for K-12 students, funds to exhibit more artwork in the Council’s galleries providing vital support to artists and opportunities to provide professional development workshops for arts educators. The Annual Fund was supported this year by 101 donors and raised $71,675 in donations.

His generosity can be seen throughout Palm Beach County through his support and generosity to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Scripps Research Institute, to name a few. Dreyfoos discussed his incredible background in photography and the arts, as well as his book, “A Photographic Odyssey: Around the World with Alexander W. Dreyfoos.” Sponsors of the luncheon included: Mr. and Mrs. Leo Vecellio Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stiller, Mr. and Mrs. Berton E. Korman and Mr. and Mrs. Homer J. Hand.
