A local teacher’s writing curriculum expands from Florida to across the nation

Lisa Collum believes that writing is foundational to countless life skills. “Writing is all about communication,” she says. “This ability will serve [students] throughout their lives. With the capability of expressing what they know on paper or electronically, and explaining it, shows understanding. These basic skills, ideally mastered in grade 5, will serve them in middle school, and are imperative for success in high school and college. Not only are writing skills essential in college with the plethora of research papers required, but writing skills are decisive measures on college applications and entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT.

“After graduation, students will continue to need these skills in the workforce. Experts predict that careers requiring cognitive thinking skills will continue to rise, and individuals who are able to communicate with the written word will be in high demand.”
