arvey Oyer III became an author of an influential children’s book series, as he puts it, “by accident.” An attorney with Shutts & Bowen in West Palm Beach, Oyer is the descendent of a Florida pioneer family, and had often been invited to speak in fourth-grade classrooms about life in 19th century Florida. His tales of the swampy world of the largely undeveloped Sunshine State were so compelling that teachers would invariably suggest to him, “you should write a book about this.” So he did. In 2008, Oyer debuted The Adventures of Charlie Pierce: The American Jungle, in which his 8-year-old protagonist arrives with his parents in the frontier jungles of South Florida, and embarks on adven-

Htures with the Seminole natives, alligators and shipwrecks that would help shape Florida’s history in what is now Palm Beach County. Four more Charlie Pierce books have followed, in a historical-fiction series Oyer describes as Huckleberry Finn meets Swiss Family Robinson. “All of the information in the books related to Florida history—place names, events, geography, topography, flora, fauna—is factually correct and meets the state teaching guidelines,” Oyer said. The books are now a part of the adopted curriculum for fourth-grade history in public schools throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, reaching hundreds of thousands of students each year. Cultural institutions such as the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum use the books in their own educational programming. “Many teachers have not just supplemented their textbooks with my books, which was my intention; they completely supplanted and replaced the textbooks with these books, because they meet all the same teaching standards, but the kids enjoy reading it,” Oyer said. “The kids don’t necessarily enjoy reading a sterile textbook, but because these are kids their own age, with the same moral decisions and dilemmas—do I fight with my sister, do I lie to mom and dad, do I run away from home—the kids can directly identify with the characters, so they just think they’re reading a cool adventure story about kids their own age. What they don’t realize is, I’m walking them through all the history of Florida.” For Oyer, the books are personal. The real Charlie Pierce was Oyer’s great grand-uncle, and as a boy growing up in what is now Hypoluxo Island, he kept a journal of every day of his life. Oyer not only draws from Charlie Pierce’s written material; he does his writing on the very same desk his great grand-uncle used to document his life. “It creates more authenticity or genuineness for the reader that it’s not just a made-up character,” Oyer said. “This is a real person that lived here, and experienced all of these remarkable things in his lifetime that shaped the state and counties and cities that we live in today.” To learn more about the Charlie Pierce series, and to order the books, visit www.theadventuresofcharliepierce.com.

Hosted by Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens together with Earth Day partners including ANGARI Foundation, the Everglades Foundation, FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, Florida Crystals Corporation, Friends of Palm Beach, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Manatee Lagoon—an FPL Eco-Discovery Center and the Cox Science Center and Aquarium, ANSG’s Earth Day celebration provides Title I students with interactive STEAMbased learning stations set up throughout the garden and designed to empower students with a deeper understanding of innovation and obtainable ways to make Earth Day every day. Nestled on 10 acres at the South Florida Fairgrounds 9067 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33411 (561) 795-3110 | www.yesteryearvillage.com

The mission of Yesteryear Village is to promote and preserve early Florida life. Authentic buildings and structures from days gone by can be visited, and include an old school, a farm, a blacksmith shop, a general store and other buildings where collections and artifacts are on display. During the year, many students throughout South Florida participate in guided tours conducted in the Village. Tours have been developed in conjunction with the curriculum approved by the School District of Palm Beach County. The program is geared to students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. Components of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) have been incorporated in these educational tours. Also located on the grounds are the Sally Bennett Big Band Hall of Fame and the Bink Glisson Historical Museum. The Sally Bennett hosts the largest collection of bigband memorabilia in the nation. The Bink Glisson Museum is comprised of personal collections of a Palm Beach County pioneer. Artifacts and artwork depicting early Florida are showcased.
