2008 Season International Polo Club Palm Beach

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Polo

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

INTRODUCTION

It is an honor for me to preface this 2008 edition of POLO Magazine, the official season guide of International Polo Club Palm Beach. In my position as President of Club Operations for both International Polo Club Palm Beach and The Wanderers Club, I am thrilled to share with you the excitement and anticipation of the upcoming Polo Season.

Chef William Sellner, Jr. has also joined the IPC staff as executive chef of the Wanderers Room. He is a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute specializing in classic French and Italian cuisine. An intimate evening savoring his culinary creations is the perfect après polo experience.

susan lerner, wellington the magazine

This season IPC has again attracted some of the finest Polo teams from around the world. Showcasing these top names in the game will be five polo tournaments, two 20-goal tournaments, the Joe Barry Cup and the Ylvisaker Cup, and three 26-goal tournaments, the C.V. Whitney Cup, The Piaget Gold Cup and the 104th Stanford U.S. Open Polo ChampionshipTM. As an added bonus, two new polo teams are joining the already impressive existing roster, Polo Do and Mt. Brilliant.

The excitement and anticipation of our 2008 Polo season has been inspired by a whole list of programs for adults and children, special events and an impressive list of sponsorship partners. With that, I am happy to announce that Ocean Drive Magazine has agreed to be the inaugural title sponsor of the Grand Marquee tent this season. As a member of International Polo Club, you will continue to experience the grand tradition of the sport while building friendships with those around you who also embrace the uniqueness of it all. The entire IPC staff appreciates that your primary goal is to take full advantage of the club. With this in mind, each and every department is at your service to help you accomplish just that. Before I close, I would like to touch on the biggest addition to the IPC community this summer, The Wanderers Club. As many of you have already found out, this newly renovated golf course, a vision developed by owner John B. Goodman and designed by Jacobsen Hardy Golf Design, adds that extra sophistication to the lifestyle that is Wellington during polo season. In closing, I encourage you to sample the scene around you, and experience the total lifestyle that is becoming a legend in South Florida. Sincerely,

John Wash, CCM President of Club Operations

Polo 101

The fast-paced, rough-and-tumble horseback sport of polo is a game of finesse and strategy when high-goal players take the field. To help you better understand and enjoy the game, here are a few guides to the game and some of the terms used on and off the playing field.

THE FIELD

The polo field is 300 yards by 160 yards; goal posts are placed 24 feet apart at each end. The field is not typically marked except for the boundaries. If the field is “boarded,” 12-inch upright boards are used to mark the sides of the field and to help stop rolling balls. If the field is not boarded, the boundaries are marked with white lines. THE TEAMS

Two teams of four mounted players compete to control the ball and score with it. While all players on each team have offensive and defensive duties and generally mix it up on the field, their specific roles or positions are designated by the numbers on their jerseys.

not to the number of goals expected to be scored. Ratings are reviewed annually and designated by a handicapping committee that relies on peer evaluations.

Number 1 is the forward player responsible for offense; Number 1 runs interference with the other team, especially their Number 4.

Chukker: a 7-minute period of play. Each

game has 6 chukkers with 3 minutes between chukkers.

GAME RULES

The object of polo is to move a ball downfield and between the opposing team’s goal posts. The game is divided into six periods of play called “chukkers.” Whenever the ball is struck, the direction the ball travels becomes the “line of the ball” and is an imaginary buffer to help avoid collisions between riders going after the ball. Mallets are always in the players’ right hands. When the ball is driven between the goal posts, a point is scored and the teams switch ends of the field. The game is controlled by a referee located at the side of the field, two mounted umpires and a goal flagger between each set of goal posts who signals a score.

Number 2 also plays offense and supports the efforts of Number 1; Number 2 is responsible for defense. Number 2 is usually the second highest-rated member of a team. Number 3 is usually the highest-rated team

member and usually the captain. Number 3 works to take possession of the ball from opponents, has good stick-and-ball control and is an accurate passer and long-ball hitter. Number 4 is responsible for defending the

goal and returning the ball to teammates. Each player has a handicap or rating that reflects his or her experience and skills. The ratings run from -2 goal to 10 goal and reflect the value of the player to the team, 2

ball onto the field between lined up teams to start or resume play.

Hook: the use of a mallet to interfere with an opponent’s mallet that is trying to strike the ball. Out of bounds: when the ball crosses the

boundaries of the playing field, the umpire throws a replacement ball from the point of exit onto the field between the two teams; the clock does not stop. Penalty: rated from 1 to 10 depending on the severity of the foul; the fouled player is allowed a free hit from a set distance from the goal. Ride-off: the pushing that occurs between

IN FAS HI ON, MISTAKE A FAD FOR A T REND AND YOU LOSE FACE. IN INVESTING, YOU L OSE EV ERYTHING.

Fads. Trends. They’re basically the same, right? Absolutely not. A fad is a momentary craze people tend to follow blindly, while a trend is a true turn in direction with lasting implications. Unfortunately, when it comes to investing, fads have decimated portfolios—including investments in “hot” foreign geographies where unforeseen events like political crises and hyper-inflation have led to meltdowns. Or the tech bubble, when the lure of the future made people forget the basic fundamentals. And the recent rush into real estate, only to see prices now plummeting. At Bessemer Trust, we have some of the most sophisticated investment professionals working today. They know how to spot fads and avoid them. They continuously analyze external forces that might change the way the wind is blowing, while seeking the next enduring trend before it even is a trend. So you realize attractive returns without taking irrational risks. Of course, with the way we avoid fads, you won’t find us wearing the latest couture styles. But somehow, we think you’ll appreciate that about us. Contact Brandon Reid, Managing Director, at 561-835-8305, or visit www.bessemer.com. Minimum relationship $10 million.

Polo is played around the world, but the countries that host the highest-rated tournaments, attracting the top professionals are United States, England, Argentina, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Other top rated countries that many travel to are Chile, Mexico, India, and, more recently, the United Arab Emirates.

Highlighted here are six tournaments that attract the professionals who travel great distances to capture the cups, prestige and honors bestowed upon those who win.

POLO NEWS

P32

CORONATION CUP GUARDS POLO CLUB WINDSOR GREAT PARK Billed as the biggest polo day in the world the Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park saw Chile defeat England 9-8 in a tightly contested match before a reported crowd of more than 15,000. Chile won this prestigious cup in 2005, captained by Gabriel Donoso. His brother, Jose, played in his place, and dedicated the 2007 victory to Gabriel, who died several months earlier following a fall during polo practice. This match came down to the final chukker with England trailing by three. James Beim of the English squad scored two unanswered goals early and with just seconds remaining the crowd was hushed as the final shot from the English team flew toward goal and would have sent the match into overtime. Somehow the ball missed the uprights and Jose Donoso said, “I believe Gabriel had hit the ball clear.”

VIVARI QUEEN’S CUP GUARDS POLO CLUB WINDSOR GREAT PARK Her Majesty The Queen of England, Elizabeth, personally presented her cup to French team Loro Piana the team, which defeated Ellerston in the final by a score of 12-11. Ellerston advanced to the final game defeating Tallandracas in the first game 13-11 and Black Bears in the Quarterfinal 12-11. But the Cup champions Loro Piana, with sevengoaler David “Pelon” Stirling and nine-goaler Juan Martin Nero, provided too much heat as they defeated Elysian Fields 10-7 in their opening cup match and Dubai 9-8 in the quarterfinals. The showdown for the Queen’s Cup went into a sudden death overtime chukker following a tying goal with 15 seconds remaining by Ellerston’s Facundo Pieres. With time running out, Loro Piana’s Juan Martin Nero put a neck shot through the goal that stunned the crowd and left the announcers silent! The game was called a “Stirling” performance as Piana’s David Stirling won Most Valuable player honors from the Queen herself. The tournament drew more than 10,000 spectators. The Vivari Queen’s Cup is billed as one of the fastest and most exciting high-goal polo tournaments in England. Historically HM The Queen presents this trophy, which she first donated to the Club in 1960, to the winning team.

UNITED KINGDOM GOLD CUP-BRITISH OPEN COWDRAY PARK ENGLAND Loro Piana brought its Queen’s Cup victory to Cowdray Park, hoping to win its second major British tournament. But the North American Polo League’s Lechuza Caracas, captained by Venezuela’s Victor Vargas, fended off injuries and a very strong Loro Piana attack to capture its first Gold Cup 11-10. Both teams entered the field confident they could overcome the other and capture the all-Britain title. It was Lechuza’s Sebastian Merlos who struck twice to put his team up in the first chukker. But, by the half, David Stirling of Loro Piana had matched Merlos’ efforts, only to suffer an injury to his thumb that forced him out in the second half; Merlos was replaced by Pablo Jauretche. The second half saw a collision between Jauretche and Pite Merlos of Lechuza that forced Merlos out of the game with a broken nose. Lechuza called on another Merlos brother Agustin to replace him. During the change over Lechuza seemed to lose its confidence and Loro Piana was able to catch up by the final chukker. In the final, Sebastian again took control to put his team ahead by scoring twice and Loro Piana was only able to score on a penalty goal. Sebastian Merlos was named the Most Valuable Player.

TORTUGAS OPEN TORTUGAS POLO CLUB BUENOS AIRES Ellerstina narrowly defeated El Paraiso 14-13 in overtime at the 2007 Tortugas Open Jeep Grand Prix on October 21. Ellerstina, with two 10-goalers, Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres, opened chukker one with two penalty goals. By the second chukker, Ellerstina led four to one with five fouls and two goals. It was in the fifth chukker that Ellerstina began to feel the heat as El Paraíso tied it up with 4 goals. The 5th was much closer as El Paraíso took the lead for the first time. However, by the end of the fifth Ellerstina regained the lead 10-9. The 6th finished in a draw at 13 and Gonzalo Pieres scored the winning goal in overtime. The tournament precedes the Argentine Championship in Palermo, where Ellerstina was defeated in the finals 16-15 in overtime by La Dolfina.

ARGENTINE OPEN PALERMO For the third consecutive year, Lolo Casagnola, Mariano Aguere, Lucas Monteverde and Adolfo Cambiaso won the Argentine open. The winning La Dolfina team defeated Ellerstina 16-15 in overtime on a goal by Lucas Monteverde. Two years earlier, La Dolfina defeated Ellerstina 20-15 to win the team’s first Argentine Championship. La Dolfina defeated Aguada to win its second trophy in 2006. Ten-goaler Mariano Aguerre was named Most Valuable Player and received the Gonzalo Heguy Trophy. He was also named Best Player of the Tournament receiving the Gonzalo Tanoira Trophy. Mariano also won Best Playing Pony for Machitos Jazz.

COPA DE ORO ELLERSTINA POLO CLUB ARGENTINA Las Monjitas, a team from the North American Polo League led by Camilo Bautista of Columbia took home the Copa de Oro Championship in November. The team defeated Sao Jose 13-10 in the final. The strength of Las Monjitas nine-goaler Eduardo Estrada and eight-goaler Piki Alberdi proved to be too strong for Sao Jose, with seven-goalers David “Pelon” Stirling and Rodrigo Andrade. Las Monjitas defeated Miramar and nine-goaler Sebastian Merlos in the semifinal 9-8 to face Sao Jose who defeated Arfango 11-9 in the semifinals. Ellerstina’s Gonzalo Pieres and his daughter Tatiana Aguerre organize the highly successful Copa de Oro and 14-goal Copa de Plata every November. This year, 16 teams played the 22goal Copa de Oro.

FOURTH GRADE POLO

W

hen John Goodman founded the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) in 2004, the beautiful property quickly became a first-class venue for high-goal polo. But, early on, Goodman also sought a departure from the sport’s reputation as only entertaining crowds of formal, fancy-hat-wearing adults as depicted in the movie Pretty Woman. IPC incorporated many events to make this exciting sport accessible to all ages and ensure a comfortable club for casual family outings. One of the most popular events that support this ongoing objective for family fun is the annual Kid’s Day, which brings more

than 1,000 Wellington fourth graders from surrounding public schools to participate in an unforgettable experience at the polo fields. “This is a great age-range for kids to be introduced to the sport of polo,” explains Julie Pickens, Director of Membership and Director of Food and Beverage. “We’ve heard from school principals that kids really look forward to this field trip as they begin their fourth grade year and it makes quite an impact.”

Kid’s Day brings many famous faces and prominent community and business leaders to the grounds. Actor Tommy Lee Jones, Outback Steakhouse owner Tim Gannon and Wellington’s Vice Mayor Lizbeth Benaquisto have attended the event in past years, welcoming the students and encouraging them to attend future games.

If that’s not enough to entice the youngsters, some of the world’s top high-goal polo players, including Nick Roldan, Jeff Hall, Brandon Phillips, Michael Armour, Mathew Copola and Nacho Figueras (a favorite amongst students who enjoy both his polo skills and name) compete for the enthusiastic, youthful crowd. “This impressive line-up of players also pulls out some students to actually participate with them in a 2 chuckers match,” explains Pickens, “the kids love the VIP treatment.”

Another highlight of the day’s festivities is the traditional divot stomp, with one change made to the celebratory libations. Rather than champagne, Kool-aid is the chosen beverage, but seems to have a similar euphoric effect. “The kids squeal and laugh with excitement as they charge out onto the field. There a large tractors filled with hay, ice and juice boxes,” Pickens recalls with amusement, “It’s like a cattle call.” The appeal of this competitive outdoor sport is obvious to most of the kids. Many are excited to return to a polo game with their parents and friends, especially since they leave the event with a complimentary ticket to another polo match in their “goody” bags that are full of sponsorship paraphernalia.

“The kids love the VIP treatment.” But there is another important component to the Annual Kid’s Day. It is also a chance for kids to learn of the many career opportunities that exist at a comprehensive polo facility like IPC and similar clubs located all over the country. “In my food and beverage department alone, I have more than 75 employees during season,” say Pickens. Many people know about the equestrian-related roles, such as the grooming and maintenance of the horses and grounds. But there is also significant staffing required to run the whole organization, such as the spa, the membership and sponsorship divisions, the box office, parking system and grandstand areas. “Many skills are needed to support the club,” explains Pickens.

Prior to the actual Kid’s Day polo game and festivities, there is much planning that goes into ensuring that the kids get the most out of the upcoming experience. Six public schools in the Wellington area in close proximity to IPC are chosen and the fourth graders adequately prepped. An assembly is held the week before the big day and a presentation is given to inform the children about the game, the equipment used and some of the terminology. A fact sheet is distributed that includes information about the players and a listing of career areas to explore. IPC Polo Manager, Jimmy Newman, Julie Pickens and four of the top polo players attend the assemblies to conduct a thorough Q&A. “We get some really good questions, like, ‘How much do polo players make?’ and some cute inquiries about the temperament of the horses. The kids are always very interested,” says Pickens. This interest ultimately translates to a fun event that benefits the children, the community and the club overall. The next annual Kid’s Day is in January and will be covered by ESPN, so stay tuned. And, visit the IPC web site for details on all special events at www.internationalpoloclub.com

f you’re like me, you have owned a sport horse or two at one time or another who suffered an injury and required rehabilitation. Some of you may have even gone through physical therapy sessions at the same time as your horse, like I did after this cover photo was taken in Vermont (the horse pictured on the front of this card went on to take me to win several championships for years after his recovery). Well, when I was a young rider, the closest my horses got to aqua therapy was swimming in Cazenovia Lake or walking in Chittenango Creek. Today, I am on a mission to bring state-of-the-art aquatic and hyperbaric treatment to horse owners and horses across the Northeast. Throughout the last two years, I have met with my friend and vet, Dr. Jack Lowe; close neighbor and Olympic-level trainer, John Madden; MSC clinicians Candice King and Shawn Flarida; Thoroughbred racing’s Dennis Brida; the faculty at Cornell University; Hub Johnson, founder of the Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (www.kesmarc.com); and many others. The result: a well-developed plan to expand the 322-student, 450-horse equine center at Morrisville State College (MSC) to accommodate post-operative patients from neighboring Cornell University in our own equine rehabilitation and physiology center. And, just as MSC offered the USA’s first baccalaureate degree in equine racing in response to industry demand, four of the Ph.D.s in our equine program have developed the first-ever baccalaureate degree in equine rehabilitation and physiology.

Morrisville State College Equine Rehabilitation and Physiology Center If there was one thing I learned while having the great fortune of riding with Rodney Jenkins, arguably the most successful show jumper in the history of the sport, and while working for the U.S. Equestrian Team from Atlanta to Sydney – it is that horses are capable of extraordinary achievements, no matter what the discipline. I’m sure you’ll agree that they give their absolute best to us and deserve the best care from us.

That said; I would be especially grateful for the opportunity to meet with you in order to describe to you in person the opportunities you have to help MSC and Cornell add to the body of knowledge surrounding the study of equine rehabilitation, as well as the opportunities that are available to support our students, your horses, and MSC’s planned rehabilitation and physiology center

NAPL RELOADED P92

“Polo lovers who wish more recognition for their sport need not worry however; All of this could be about to change.

NAPL Reloaded How the brand new polo league is overcoming tragedy and taking the sport to new heights. By Jason Jeffers

B

efore the advent of all-sports cable channel ESPN in 1979, fans around the country were pretty much limited to watching Monday Night Football and baseball on the big three networks or going to see games themselves. Now, between dozens of 24-hour cable sports networks and the Internet, die-hards can keep track of every stat, win and high ankle sprain. Better yet, many have discovered a whole new world of sports outside of baseball, football and basketball; you’re just as likely to find devotees of tournament fencing and world championship poker. But where are all the polo fans? One of the world’s oldest and highly competitive sports played by serious athletes, both human and equestrian, for mote than 2,000 years, polo is played all across the country and throughout the world. Despite its reach, it has yet to make an impression on American sports fandom en masse. There are precious few matches broadcast on television, and the fans that do show up to watch them live remain part of a niche crowd. Polo lovers who wish more recognition for their sport need not worry however; all of this could be about to change. 2006 marked the formation of the North American Polo League (NAPL), a new sporting body that is seeking to take the sport to previously unseen levels of exposure, competitiveness and sheer excitement. Most of all, they’re looking to draw a crowd. “What this represents is an opportunity to take polo in a new direction,” said Charles Smith, Executive Director of the NAPL. “The polo world has always been somewhat disjointed in that it revolves around individual clubs and tournaments that are scattered all over the map. This is a chance to create some structure that will lead to more people being interested in the game at all levels.” But entering into 2008, the league finds itself in the position of having to reaffirm its intentions and its muscle. In 2007, it faced a tragedy that would be insurmountable to any organization: in May, one of the NAPL’s founders, Skeeter Johnston, was fatally injured on the playing field, sending shockwaves through the South Florida polo community and putting the future and vision of the NAPL in a precarious position. “It was the kind of blow that made it difficult to go on. It wasn’t just business, it was personal; a tremendous, tragic emotional loss,” said John Goodman, Founder of the International Polo Club and the NAPL’s co-founder with Mr. Johnston. “With the blessing and involvement of Skeeter’s father, Skey Johnston, we’re continuing on. He knows how much Skeeter believed in it, and it’s the right thing for polo.” As such, the NAPL that is charging into 2008 is one of new passion, vigor, and most importantly, one full of new initiatives and plans. Structurally, the league resembles NASCAR in that teams are awarded points throughout the year based on their

performance. This enables fans to keep track of each team’s level of success, culminating in the team with the most points at the end of the polo year securing the NAPL championship. “What this does is create a situation where there is always a leader in the league, but one that isn’t leading by so many points where other teams can’t catch up,” said Smith. “That adds a real level of interest, risk and extended excitement to the sport that hasn’t existed before.” Currently, the championship cash prize is set at $100,000, but it will be increasing the near future, according to Kevin Carlon, Director of Sales and Marketing for the NAPL. “This is high-goal polo, where only the most skilled players around can take the field. Because of that we want to make the stakes just a little bit higher,” said Carlon. “We’re also adding a sixth tournament to the International Polo Club’s slate, one which will only be open to the league’s eight teams. It’s one more opportunity for the teams to show just what they’re made of.” Backing up the league’s new tournaments and bounties are the long range plans as envisioned by Mr. Johnston and Mr. Goodman from the outset, which sees the polo being presented as seriously and accessibly as any other major league sport in America. “I hope to see us align with top sponsors who can really help push us into the spotlight and generate excitement,” says Goodman. “What many people who don’t follow polo don’t realize is that this is a sport of great passion. You have a group of athletes that are as energized and passionate about polo as Tony Hawk is about skateboarding. It’s about redefining polo in people’s minds, showing them just how great and alive this sport truly is.” “We hope that in the long run, as more people become spectators at high profile games, we can attract more young American athletes to the sport, players who normally would have opted for football or baseball,” said Smith. “We’re working towards having organized, serialized presentation of the sport on television that treats it more seriously than what we’ve seen to date, which are one-off shows that feature game highlights and lifestyle features. It’s time to move beyond that.” It’s a challenging mission, but one which the league’s management seems more than equipped to handle. 2008 could be the year in which polo makes its way to the center stage. “In the past, we’ve had many major athletes from other sports swing by to watch games,” said Goodman, who’s also owner of the fearsome Isla Carroll team. “They’ve often been surprised by how skilled the players and horses are. They always say, ‘gee, I didn’t know they could do that.’ Afterwards, they walk away with a certain amount of respect and awe for the game that they didn’t have before. That tells me that it’s just a matter of education, of getting more people familiar with the intricacies of the sport. Once people see this sport as it’s supposed to be seen, they won’t be able to stop watching.”

High Stakes Owning a racehorse can be a risky business. Just ask Brent Johnson. By Sean Clancy

I

t’s five o’clock on a cool Kentucky evening in November and the Keeneland horse sales are underway. For the past several days, Brent Johnson has been perusing Thoroughbred pedigree pages, poring through analysis and checking out one of the finest selection of horses in the world. But, after the first session of the two-week sale, Johnson has yet to register a winning bid on a horse. Prices are averaging a healthy $562,186, well above his comfort zone. A Blue Hen mare sold for over $10 million. “I’ve been blown out of the water so far,” he says, as the auctioneer’s voice resonates in the background. “But, I’m thinking one will slip through the cracks soon.” It’s been five years since Johnson - who owns and operates a capital management company in Virginia - caught one of the best Thoroughbred horses to ever slip through the cracks. In 2002, he and two friends, Karl Barth and Chris Dwyer, formed Bushwood Stable and purchased Better Talk Now. Trained by Graham Motion, Better Talk Now has won nearly $4 million – including the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Lone Star Park in Texas – in five years of racing. Better Talk Now has taken his owners around the world, from Florida to Japan. The trio is eyeing the Dubai World Cup in March. While they call horse racing the sport of kings, Johnson, Barth and Dwyer are living proof that you don’t need a crown to cash in. They didn’t spend millions on Better Talk Now. They purchase and campaign horses within a comfort zone. They own a handful of horses, sell when they can and roll the dice when opportunity arises. It’s a gambling sport and owning horses is the biggest gamble, especially if you aren’t born into a family with roots in the business.

THOROUGHBRED P102

“My family had nothing to do with horses but I got interested and started going to the races when I was old enough to drive. When I got to the point financially where I could participate, I got involved,” Johnson says. Johnson purchased his first horse in 1999 and has been at it ever since. He could have gone solo or joined one of the many partnerships that have flourished recently (years ago one person owned 100 horses, now 100 people own one horse). Instead, he created his own boutique partnership of three friends, learning the business one phase at a time.

While they call horse racing the sport of kings, you don’t need a crown to cash in. “I took the approach of just trying to learn what was going on around me. We bought yearlings, we bought off the racetrack, we bought some two year-olds at the sales, we claimed one, we bought a broodmare, we brought one over from Europe,” rattles off Johnson. “We’ve tried to dabble in all aspects and tried to figure out all the ins and outs of it, just to see what would make sense for us to have success. We tried to learn, that’s all. Better Talk Now has covered all the mistakes. He paid the tuition. We were very, very fortunate to get a horse to do what he’s done.” There is hardly a way to understate just how lucky Johnson and his partners have been. Many life-long owners never campaign a horse like Better Talk Now. Racehorse owners generally lose more money than they win. Companies that put together racing partnerships tell would-be investors not to do it to make money, but for the love of the sport. “It’s hard. I’ll be honest. Barrier of entry is tough. It’s very confusing, trying to find people you can trust and work with is difficult. I love it, but you better really love it,” says Johnson. “The main thing is to be patient, take one step at a time, start small and figure things out as you go. There are a lot of aspects to the sport and the business. Meet some different people and figure out how they do things. Graham and I have a similar philosophy and we have a mutual respect for what the other guy is trying to do. He respects my opinion and my input and I try hard not to give any input on things I shouldn’t.” Johnson says running a capital management business has little crossover with owning horses. “In your other businesses, you’ve taken a long route and you’re more informed about the business. Racing is so off on its own, if you haven’t grown up in it, you come to it with a complete lack of knowledge of the players and the processes. You have to pick all that up from scratch. That’s why patience is key. If you have enough money, you can start plunking down money at this sale. But there’s a good chance of explosion,” he warns. Not that staying patient and buying low ensures that you’re out of the blast zone, but for Johnson, the thrill of race day is worth the risk. “For me, it’s the most exciting part. I think about the race for weeks, just waiting for it to show up,” he says, as the sounds of the horse sales hum behind him. “Picking a horse, getting it to the racetrack and winning a race is so exciting. I used to handicap for an entire day. You take a position and you get some involvement for a couple of minutes of the race, but then it’s over, you don’t see the struggle, the strategy to get there. But when you own a horse, the feeling of accomplishment is off the charts.”

has been terrific. I got lucky”

“EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF HORSE RACING” AT THE RACES By Sean Clancy You don’t have to brave the crowds at the Kentucky Derby to experience the best of horse racing. Here are few of the sport’s premier tracks. Keenleland Keeneland combines old-world tradition – many scenes from the 2003 film Seabiscuit were filmed there – and progressive talent to produce some of the best racing in the world. Buoyed by the sales, the racetrack offers a festival every April and October. The three-week meet in April attracts college students and hard-boot Kentuckians. It’s a rite of passage, the sign that spring has arrived in Lexington. Saratoga The six-week meet in Saratoga Springs, New York, runs from late July to Labor Day. Horses converge from around the country to produce superlative racing action six days a week. Pack your hat and your wallet, and stay in town to enjoy the nightlife of a historic resort town in the Adirondacks. Del Mar Southern California’s version of Saratoga, Del Mar is “where the surf meets the turf,” as the saying goes. The racing isn’t as good as Keeneland and Saratoga, but there is not a more picture postcard perfect setting in which to take in the action. Breeders’ Cup World Championships The Super Bowl of racing visits a different track every fall, in late October or early November. Racing enthusiasts will be California dreamin’ in 2008 as the race, which crowns champions in all divisions, opens its gates at Santa Anita.

J

immy Jerkens lives in his father’s shadow. That’s because dad is legendary trainer Allen “The Chief” Jerkens and just about everybody in racing walks in his shadow. In 1975, he became the youngest trainer inducted into the horseracing Hall of Fame. Today, he’s 78 and still going strong, winning premier races from Saratoga to Gulfstream Park. And, it seems, he’s passed the magic touch on to his son. At 48 years old, Jimmy recently collected his second career Breeders’ Cup victory when he saddled Centennial Farms’ Corinthian to win the first edition of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on October 26. To put a Breeders’ Cup victory in perspective: the Chief has never won one. For Jerkens, who worked for his father until 1997, it was a moment when he wasn’t just Allen Jerkens’ son. “The Chief. He’s one in a zillion. I worked for him like it was my own outfit. He knew it. He appreciated it. We won a lot of good races,” Jerkens said. “Winning two Breeders’ Cup races has been terrific. I got lucky. Both horses just trained up to the race perfect and at the right time.” An enigmatic colt, Corinthian never made anything easy for Centennial or Jerkens. Nerves could sometimes lead to melt downs. Jerkens learned to ice Corinthian’s nerves from the moment he walked into the horse’s barn two years ago. The gifted chestnut colt retired with six wins and more than $1.2 million in earnings. He will stand stud at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, retiring a winner. The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile was run at a mile and 70 yards, due to Monmouth Park’s configuration. Out of the gates, jockey Kent Desormeaux settled Corinthian in fourth position, inside Discreet Cat, just off Wanderin Boy. Desormeaux guided Corinthian along the rail, streaking past Discreet Cat, before making a move outside the pace setter, Gottcha Gold. In the mud and slop, Corinthian ran to a 6 ½-length victory over Gottcha Gold. The Chief, at home in Bellerose Terrace, New York, cheered all the way.

SOME THING FOR THE SOUTH FLORIDA OUT DOORS MAN

by: jason jeffers

eing an outdoorsman in South Florida is a bit different than what you’re used to seeing on television. Here, our champions of the great outdoors typically wear shorts, sunglasses and t-shirts; you won’t often find them in hunting caps and thick Gore-Tex jackets.

If you’re looking to join their ranks however, it’s not as easy as it might seem. Hunting, fishing and other such adventuresome sports may be practiced by legions of devoted outdoorsmen around the rest of the country, but here the sports tend towards niche affairs.

If you are serious though, there are serious resources and outlets for your passion to be, namely the more challenging sports of fly fishing and shooting. And while a few trips out of town to fully indulge yourself are advised, there’s far more to do here than you may be thinking.

Before you get started, make sure you pay a visit to Dewing’s Fly and Gun Shop (123 Datura Street, West Palm Beach, 561-655-4434, dewings.com), a veritable institution in the city. Since 1936, the shop has catered to hunters and fishermen the world over with premium goods and expansive knowledge on the intricacies of both sports.

You’ll find all kinds of fly fishing rods here, but if a hunting trip is in your future, then you’ll really be in heaven amongst the collection of high-grade European hunting shot guns, many of which are exclusive to the shop.

Bear in mind however, that this is a shop for the dedicated shooter, as the guns here run anywhere from $4000 to over $150,000.

“We do things a little differently,” said owner Jay Dewing, who took over the shop in 1997. “Many of these guns – some of the best and most expensive in the world like the Fabbri or the Holloway - are usually only available through the manufacturer, and when you order them you have to wait about three or four years to receive them. We try to keep a couple in stock at all times. We’re also producing our own limited edition Dewing’s gun.”

Aside from the quality gear and in-house instructors, the fine gents at Dewing’s such as manager Mike Burnett and of course, Jay Dewing himself – can tell you where to head to now that you’re armed with the tools of your new weekend trade.

f fishing is your thing, your first stop should be right around the corner at the West Palm Beach Fishing Club (5th Street & N. Flagler Drive, West

Palm Beach, 561-832-6780) or further south at the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club (208 South Hibiscus Island, Miami Beach, 305-531-1233, therodandreelclub.com or the Rod and Gun Club (Everglades City, 239-695-2101, evergladesrodandgun.com). Established in 1934, 1929 and 1922 respectively, they have all hosted famous (and infamous) fishermen such as Ernest Hemingway and Al Capone.

Much more challenging than regular fishing, fly fishing involves using an artificial fly as bait, a heavier rod and a heavily oiled line. As such, there are generally fewer fly fishermen in any fishing community, and they tend to fish in-land in small ponds and lakes. That’s not the case in South Florida however, where fly fishermen have taken to the mangroves and shallow, saltwater flats, especially in the Keys, Bimini and the Bahamas.

“This has always been an area where people come to expand their fishing horizons,” said Tom Twyford, Jr., the Executive Director of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club. “What that results in is fly fishermen in these parts trying to catch something on a fly rod that’s never been caught that way before. On the right day and with the right skills, you can catch just about anything, even bigger fish like spinner sharks, sailfish or king mackerel.”

When you’re ready to go angling for a big one, look up Captain Scott Hamilton of Fly Fishing Extremes (West Palm Beach, 561-745-2402, flyfishingextremes.com. An experienced and friendly chap, he’s in business running charter expeditions on which you can have a go at reeling in a few big ones out in the Gulf Stream currents just east of the Florida coast. He’s just might be the best in South Florida.

“This has always been an area where people come to expand their fishing horizons.

If

oyou’re looking to hunt, you’ll have to venture a little further out. Should you be so adventurous, take oa drive out to Quail Creek Plantation (12399 Northeast 224th Street, Okeechobee, 863-763-1414,

quailcreekplantation.com). Here, you can rent a cabin and shoot quails, wild turkeys or sporting clays if you’re squeamish about hunting birds.

A bit closer is J&R Outfitters (7600 SW Fox Brown Road, Indiantown, 772-597-4757, jroutfitters.com). Dewing’s regularly hosts competitions and events at the J&R grounds, which is over 4000 acres of deer, wild hogs, quail, wild turkeys, doves and ducks. The folks here will even pick you up at the airport, and since their ranch is home to such a variety of wild game and birds, they put extra effort into conserving the wildlife and natural surroundings which they all share.

“You’ll really find some of the most beautiful hunting grounds in the state out there,” said Jay Dewing. “It’s a great place to learn, enjoy and honor the sport of hunting. After that you can always venture further North or even outside of the country.

Of course, there are plenty of resorts outside of Florida that will make for grand vacations once you’re approaching pro status. The Greenbrier (West Virginia, 800-453-4858, greenbrier.com) is a luxury hotel that features some of the best hunting and fishing in the Eastern United States, and if you’re looking to venture west of the Mississippi, check out another Dewing favorite, The Lodge at Chama (New Mexico, 505-7562133, ranchweb.com/chama). It features some of the best elk hunting in the world, resulting in a three-year waiting list just for a couple nights stay!

Before any of that can happen however, you first have to master your tools and your sport. Hopefully, you now realize that there’s no better place to do so than in your own back yard. With that said, put down this magazine and get outside; you’ve got work to do.

“Hopefully, you now realize that there’s no better place to do so than in your own back yard.”

Many of polo’s best ponies once ran the rails. By Jason Jeffers

W

hen Sylvia Firestone first laid her eyes on Ally, a thoroughbred racehorse whose days on the track were coming to an end, she knew right away the steed wasn’t done kicking-up divots “I remember buying her, and there was some-

thing about her that just stood out,” said Firestone, whose company La Victoria is a respected and sought-after source for thoroughbred polo ponies in Florida and Argentina. “I could sense that she was smart and quick to learn, that she was really a unique horse.” After some downtime and training, Ally proved to be a sterling polo pony, performing in the Argentine Open and the U.S. Open under one of the most captivating polo players of the last several years, champion Mike Azzaro. Firestone was right this was a different kind of horse.

T

hose who buy and train thoroughbred horses that go on to become polo ponies will all tell you the same thing: there’s just something about these horses. It isn’t simply a matter of being able to reach lightning speeds; a good polo pony belongs to an elite category of

horses that perform far beyond what the average person thinks any horse is capable of. “I don’t think most people can really appreciate just how incredibly special good polo ponies are, unless they’ve worked with them closely,” said Jimmy Newman, Director of Polo Operations of the NAPL. “These are animals that have to be able to run and sharply maneuver at incredible speeds, over the course of six periods of play, at seven minutes each and it’s all done on a field that’s 300 yards long. These are truly amazing creatures.” Like Ally, polo is a second career for many of the ponies in the sport. In an earlier life, many of them were magnificent racehorses, tearing up tracks faster than a railbird tearing up a busted betting slip. If they are one of the special ones however, that high stakes experience is simply a warm-up for what’s to come. “Most horses end their racing career at three or four years old,” said Firestone. “They’re no longer reaching their top speed, and it’s a good point for them to make the transition into another career as a polo pony.” “The rule of thumb is that you want to buy a horse that has the least amount of starts as possible, one that isn’t too big,” said Bart Evans, a ranch owner and pony trainer, who holds the distinction of being one of finest polo players America has ever produced. In a long and storied career, Evans won the U.S. Open, the Monty Waterbury Cup and the International Gold Cup, among many other lofty championship awards. “Maybe you use them for some ranch work for a short while and then you commence the training once the racing is out of their system,” said Evans. “There are entirely new skills for them to learn. You want to teach the horse how to turn, you want to teach them to start backing off of biting the bit and respond more to the rider. It’s a totally new experience for the horse, but the best ones take to it quickly.” In all of his years involved with the sport of polo, Evans remains in awe of a good polo pony. “The good ones seem to learn immediately. They play easily and they just have that kind of mind,” said Evans. “As they get older, and provided they don’t have their career sidelined by injuries, the good ones almost become like machines – thoroughly reliable and powerful. It’s a remarkable thing to see.” “A good pony becomes sensitive to the leg movements of the rider, learns how to balance themselves differently, and gets used to the rider handling them with one hand,” said Firestone. “I generally find that a horse, after playing polo for some time, becomes a whole lot smarter. The really exceptional ones even learn to follow the ball, almost anticipating its next move.” To hear Evans, Firestone and countless others tell it, these aren’t just horses - they’re full-on athletes. “When I speak to people who don’t work with horses, it’s obvious that they don’t see these animals as athletes, but that’s exactly what they are; they have to have both a certain amount of will and ability,” said Firestone. “As far as polo is concerned, the training that these horses go through is like training for a marathon. They have to be in peak cardio condition and have fantastic stamina.” “The greatest human athletes are born with not only ability, but also great work ethic. In this sport, a good horse is no different,” said Bart Evans. “You see it in the best. The athletic ability is there, and the focus is there. These aren’t parade horses.” Indeed, polo ponies are almost an entirely different type of horse: competitive, driven and as passionate about the sport as their riders. “It might sound strange but the exceptional horses like Ally seem to really enjoy playing,” said Firestone. “They really, really get into it.” “You have to ask yourself, is a good horse the one that decides the training is too much for him and it’s in his best interest – as a horse – to not go through with it, or is it the one who’ll die out there on the field pushing himself?” questioned Evans. “You ask yourself that question, and the answer you get is that there are good horses, and then there are good polo ponies.”

Like Ally, polo is a second career for many of the ponies in the sport.
