PALM BEACH Dubbed “America’s First Resort Destination” for a reason, the bejeweled island of Palm Beach owes its origins to the hospitality pioneers of South Florida, who established the town as a beacon for world-class lodging, 24/7 leisure, and unsurpassable retail. It maintains that tradition today, boasting one of the most famous shopping streets in the nation, iconic bougainvilleadraped architecture and cutting-edge restaurants. “Florida’s pretty similar to the Caribbean but without the hassle of travel,” says Geri Eannarino, director of sales at the Seagate Hotel & Spa in Delray Beach (877.577.3242, theseagatehotel. com). “It’s good for people who want a relaxing vacation where they like to be at the beach during the day or explore restaurants or nightlife in the evening. If they like to golf, snorkel or enjoy water sports, we have that too.” The Seagate can offer all of these amenities from its primo location in trendy downtown Delray Beach, just two miles from the ocean. Guests even have access to the resort’s private Beach Club, a short and free trolley ride from the
38
hotel. “The staff is available on the beach when you arrive, and they’ll organize chairs and tables, and bring you cold beverages. They pamper you so you don’t have to do much other than work on your tan,” Eannarino says. With a 42,000-square-foot spa that has been named one of the 10 best in the world, Eau Palm Beach (800.328.0170, eaupalmbeach.com) is one of The Palm Beaches’ signature oceanfront resorts, conveniently located on Palm Beach island. “We are an intimate oceanfront resort, and we offer so many things to vacationers, such as a world-class spa, where you can enjoy champagne and
cupcakes, and amazing treatments in our couples massage room, along with exceptional cuisine throughout the resort,” summarizes Nick Gold, public relations director at the resort. A stay at Eau Palm Beach is a bespoke experience, with resort staff happy to curate outdoor adventures like standup paddleboard sessions in the ocean, or a spa treatment and dinner under the stars in a private beach cabana, complete with butler service and chef-selected menu. For the most bang for one’s buck, Gold recommends booking the oceanfront Lanai Terrace Suites. “The room is on the ground floor, so you open your expansive terrace, and you’re right at the beach and pool without using an elevator,” he says. Another resort offering waterfront bliss is Boca Raton’s Waterstone Resort & Marina (561.368.9500, waterstoneboca. com), whose 139 nautical-themed guestrooms include private balconies

Guests feel refreshing ocean breezes every time they step outside, whether it’s swimming in the pool or watching boats glide down the Intracoastal and Lake Boca. “As a secluded boutique hotel, we’re walking distance to the beach and are within a 3-mile radius of a wide variety of upscale restaurants,” says Jennifer Graham, director of sales and marketing. The Waterstone’s free shuttle service can take couples anywhere within those three miles, including drop-offs and pickups on Boca Raton’s prized beach.

Animal Instincts
Manatee Lagoon—an FPL Eco-Discovery Center
Manatees: Some call them “sea cows;” others laud them as the gentle giants of the underwater ecosystem. These glorious herbivorous mammals, which can weigh up to 1,300 pounds, exist in just three regions of the world, South Florida being one of them. Manatee Lagoon—an FPL Eco-Discovery Center (6000 N. Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach; 561.626.2833) is a prime spot to view these once-endangered beasts. The free facility offers two levels of observation areas, interactive exhibits, arts and crafts and educational lectures. American Alligators: The state animal of Florida may be the endangered panther, but it might as well be the alligator—an iconic symbol of the Sunshine State with more than 200 million years of history. Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (10216 Lee Road, Boynton Beach; 561.734.8303) in western Boynton Beach is a great place to catch these mostly docile creatures sunning themselves on mud flats, especially in the spring and fall. In fact, this preserve contains the highest density of alligators in The Palm Beaches. The Wild and Scenic Loxahatchee River, accessible from Riverbend Park (9060 W. Indiantown Road, Jupiter; 561.741.1359) is another popular gator hang. Rent a kayak or canoe, and you might paddle next to baby alligators. Sea Turtles: As a world-famous sea turtle location, the waters off the Atlantic coast are home to five of the seven varieties 78
of sea turtles: The loggerhead, green turtle, leatherback, hawksbill and Kemp’s ridley. Three types of these half-shelled reptiles nest on the beaches of Boca Raton, where Gumbo Limbo Nature Center (1801 N. Ocean Blvd., Boca Raton; 561.544.8605) monitors more than 1,000 turtle nests each year. Located at the north end of Boca Raton’s Red Reef Park, Gumbo Limbo offers popular sea turtle walks, which allow visitors the rare opportunity to watch giant turtles give birth on the beach—and, a few weeks later, to witness the release of their hatchlings into the ocean. Those staying in the northern Palm Beaches can get their sea-turtle fix at the similar Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach (14200 U.S. Highway 1; 561.627.8280). Roseate Spoonbills: A favorite of birders and nature photographers the world over, the roseate spoonbill is common in only three states, with South Florida figuring prominently in its migratory patterns. Recognized for their impressive bills and football-shaped body, the spoonbills, like American flamingos, derive their splendid pink color from their diet. The birds have become synonymous with Everglades ornithology, but a great place to scope them out is the estuary at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (10900 Jack Nicklaus Drive, North Palm Beach; 561.624.6952).

African-American History Trail Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, Delray Beach
The Palm Beaches teem with heritage landmarks honoring its vibrant African-American history. Here are a few of the cultural landmarks from Delray Beach to West Palm Beach. For African-American heritage in The Palm Beaches, there’s no better place to begin than the Spady Museum (170 N.W. Fifth Ave., Delray Beach; 561.279.8883). Honoring Solomon D. Spady, a pioneering Delray Beach educator and community leader, the museum offers exhibitions, youth programs, annual events and “Ride & Remember” trolley tours celebrating the African-American history and influence in The Palm Beaches, from its location in Spady’s historic home. While in the Delray Beach area, stop by the B.F. James & Frances Jane Bright Mini-Park on the east side of Northwest Fifth Avenue, 100 feet south of Northwest First Street. Read the bronze marker commemorating the history of this location and its role connecting the African-American population during the dark days of Jim Crow. This park formerly housed the “School No. 4 Delray Colored” and the Great Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, among other institutions. Traveling north to West Palm Beach, visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Landmark at Currie Park (2200 N. Flagler Drive; 561.804.4900). Completed in 2004, the memorial features an impressive bronze bust of the civil rights leader reading a Bible, positioned in front of a curved granite wall bearing quotes and events from King’s life. Continue your West Palm Beach history trail at the N orthwest N eighborhood Historic District (North Rosemary and Douglas avenues, bounded by Northwest Second and 11th streets), a once-segregated portion of West Palm Beach whose buildings were designed by African-American builders, contractors and architects. The district is home to the 1893-vintage Tabernacle Church (801 Eighth St., West Palm Beach; 561.832.8338), which boasts the only Neo-Romanesque Revival architecture in the Northwest District. It also contains the Sunset Lounge, a legendary concert venue that has welcomed Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie on its stage. West Palm Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency is currently investing $4.5 million to revive the Sunset Lounge to its former glory.
Carol Cunningham
The house of Dr. Joseph Wiley Jenkins, one of the first African-American pharmacists in the Northwest community, is now the home of Artists Showcase (815 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., West Palm Beach; 561.832.1323), a gallery and art center dedicated to furthering the creativity of artists of color. A cultural institution for more than 30 years, it serves an audience of 10,000 adults and children each year.

NOTHING LIKE LIVE MUSIC, COMEDY, DANCE, BROADWAY AND MORE!
The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts has launched its 2019-2020 season with more than 300 shows to entertain audiences of all ages. The line-up, featuring some of the world’s greatest performers, includes music, comedy, dance, Broadway and much more. The Center, which is in the midst of a $50 million expansion project, is now even more accessible for guests—with a beautiful urban park-like plaza complete with wide sidewalks, bike paths and a lovely waterfall fountain. Parking is easier than ever with a brand-new valet parking garage and a ramp that leads to the 4th floor of the self-parking garage. The Dreyfoos Hall lobby has been expanded by 6,000 square feet, providing more room for guests to mingle before the show and during intermission. Additional improvements around the Center’s campus are still underway, which will only enhance guest’s experience even more. As the cultural hub of downtown West Palm Beach, the Kravis Center is where residents and visitors go for the best in LIVE performances, ideally located just next door to shopping and dining at Rosemary Square and Clematis, as well as the Convention Center and area hotels. Fulfilling our mission to provide a diversity of programming, the Center hosts two series featuring classical music, Regional Arts Classical Concert Series (in its 45th year) and Young Artists Classical Series. They also present an array of arts education programs for students of all ages and enlightening lectures, films and talks. View the entire season by visiting the Center’s official website kravis.org or learn more by calling the Box Office at 561.832.7469.

FLORIDA’S CULTURAL CAPITAL®
Two of The Palm Beaches’ major cultural institutions have recently undergone massive renovations, elevating them from excellent to extraordinary. The Norton Museum of Art, home to blockbuster limited exhibitions and an outstanding permanent collection, is now a sleek landmark reimagined by the legendary architecture firm Foster + Partners (whose credits include London’s Millennium Bridge and Germany’s Reichstag building). It now features an iconic “Typewriter Eraser” installation at its entrance, a whimsical sculpture garden and free admission on Fridays and Saturdays. The Kravis Center, newly expanded with its own outdoor waterfall, is home to Broadway tours, world-class dance and opera, rock and classical music, the best comedians and much more.

DIVER DOWN There’s nothing in the entire Americas quite like the exotic water world living underneath the Blue Heron Bridge in Riviera Beach. Voted the best shore dive site in the United States, this teeming wonderland allows novice and experienced divers, photographers and snorkelers to commune with seahorses and octopi, eels and manta rays, and countless species of tropical fish with colors that put rainbows to shame. Even manatees, one of Florida’s signature marine mammals, sometimes congregate under the bridge. The history of The Palm Beaches is defined by big dreams and big personalities. With moxie, money and blueprints, they began laying the groundwork for generations of culture, recreation and cuisine.
If it seems like Flagler’s name is everywhere in The Palm Beaches, that’s because he also built another classic hotel still standing today, The Breakers, and his own American castle, Whitehall—a majestic landmark that operates today as the Flagler Museum. The next major influencer on the look and development of The Palm Beaches was quirky New York architect Addison Mizner, who moved here in 1918 and popularized Palm Beach’s iconic Mediterranean-Revival style. His major accomplishments include the Everglades Club in Palm Beach and what now is the Boca Raton Resort & Club. He was as known for his eccentric menagerie as his work: He owned several colorful macaws and three monkeys—one of whom, Johnnie Brown, has his own grave in Palm Beach. Look for it in the courtyard of Pizza Al Fresco. For more on The Palm Beaches’ rich history and its connections to the present, visit the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, at 300 N. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach. Admission is free. For information, call 561.832.4164 or visit hspbc.org. In the meantime, here are a few more short takes on the people, places and events that made history in The Palm Beaches.
DID YOU KNOW …
In 1513, legend says Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon made a brief stop somewhere around what is today Jupiter Inlet. His stay wasn’t too long, as local Native American tribes didn’t give him a warm welcome. Speaking of Jupiter Inlet, the red-bricked lighthouse, built in 1860, still shines today as the oldest building in The Palm Beaches. The now fabled “barefoot mailmen” delivered U.S. mail from Miami to The Palm Beaches— an 80-mile route across sandy beaches. One barefoot mailman famously disappeared, and another was known to walk the beaches naked on account of the heat.
History
Famed Standard Oil industrial titan Henry Morrison Flagler recognized the potential of Florida’s ideal climate and natural splendor. He expanded his railway from North Florida’s Indian River all the way to Miami … right through the present-day Palm Beaches. In late 1890s Flagler built on Palm Beach island the region’s first luxury hotel, the Royal Poinciana, then the largest wooden structure in the world.
HISTORY
Before she was a famous clothing entrepreneur, Lilly Pulitzer was a Palm Beach socialite who opened a juice stand on the citrus grove she owned with her husband. She sewed a couple of humble dresses made of patterned fabric designed to withstand juice stains—thus creating her signature style. The first Lilly Pulitzer store opened in Palm Beach in 1962; coming full circle, a new Lilly Pulitzer store opened on the island in 2018. Mar-a-Lago isn’t the first presidential retreat in The Palm Beaches. In the early ‘60s, President Kennedy enjoyed visiting his family’s secluded compound in Palm Beach, which they dubbed the Winter White House. In 1967, IBM choose 550 acres in Boca Raton as the site for its multimillion-dollar headquarters, just south of the Florida Atlantic University campus. It’s here that Big Blue developed the personal computer in 1981. Wellington resident and polo champion William T. Ylvisaker introduced polo to The Palm Beaches back in 1978, creating polo fields in Wellington. The town has long been the destination for some of the most prestigious polo tournaments. Also headquartered in The Palm Beaches is the United States Polo Association (USPA), governing body of the sport of polo created in 1890, the polo museum in Lake Worth and U.S. Polo Assn. in West Palm Beach – the $1.7 billion official licensed brand of the USPA. Actor and cultural icon Burt Reynolds, who died in 2018, helped put the arts on the map in The Palm Beaches by forming one of its first professional theaters, the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre (now the Maltz Jupiter Theatre) and a vibrant arts school, the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film and Theatre.
