Welcome to The Palm Beaches

Welcome to The Palm Beaches and to the inaugural publication, Play in The Palm Beaches, a guide to sport, recreation and experiences from the Palm Beach County Sports Commission! As a dynamic hub for professional and youth sports, our sports commission supports a myriad of events, which collectively bring nearly 1 million sports visitors to our county each year. While they are here—whether it’s to enjoy our world-class competitions like the PGA Tour’s The Honda Classic and the Winter Equestrian Festival, or to cheer on their family members in youth baseball or swimming—visitors often ask us: What else is there to do in The Palm Beaches? This comprehensive publication is an answer to that question or, rather, 100-plus potential answers. From our verdant parks and nature centers to our esteemed theaters and museums to our trend-setting golf courses and first-rate shopping centers, The Palm Beaches have something for everyone—not to mention our 47 enviable miles of public beachfront. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a season, or before or after the big event, this guide contains everything you need to know to live like a Palm Beacher. Just bring your game; we’ve got the rest covered.

Kayaking down the legendary “Wild and Scenic” Loxahatchee River is a great way to take in the local flora and fauna, while the newly renovated Maltz Jupiter Theatre offers worldclass cultural nourishment.

But its history of luxury hospitality is only one facet of this growing familyfriendly destination, with its Instagrammable bougainvillea-draped architecture, and a free Lake Trail offering walkers and cyclists million-dollar views of waterfront mansions. Pan’s Garden, with its iconic sculpture of the fluted Pan of Rohallion, is another complimentary attraction, while the Flagler Museum is a lavish throwback to the island’s opulent heritage.

WEST PALM BEACH A world of opportunities thrives in the county seat of The Palm Beaches, whose dynamite downtown, filled with dining, culture and retail, is just minutes from Palm Beach International Airport. From Broadway shows to music legends and top comedians, the Kravis Center is the

It also offers the largest floating obstacle course on the East Coast.

LAKE WORTH BEACH Hip eateries, unique shops and colorful art galleries line the streets of this inviting and offbeat city, a favorite for nightlife and public art. The latter is especially plentiful at the annual

For athletes and sports spectators alike, it’s all about the horse play at this illustrious western village, a quiet and homey region that doubles as one of the world’s top destinations for equestrian sport. GREEN PARTY

The Honda Classic, Palm Beach Gardens

Ocean Course at The Breakers

As Florida’s Golf Capital®, The Palm Beaches offer more than 160 golf courses, many of whose greens were designed by some of the game’s top architects.

Moreover, no country club or special membership is required to play at such beautiful, award-winning county-run greens as Boca Raton’s Osprey Point Golf Course, with its lush Platinum Paspalum turf, and West Palm Beach’s Okeeheelee Golf Course, a 27-hole mainstay for more than 20 years that doubles as a wildlife sanctuary. Just schedule your tee times and enjoy the views! With such an ideal climate for the links, it’s no wonder the PGA’s headquarters reside in Palm Beach Gardens—and why two of its top annual tournaments are hosted here. In fact, The Palm Beaches are the only destination that is home to a PGA Tour, PGA Champions Tour, and LPGA Tour event. On Feb. 20-26, 2023, the 50th annual The Honda Classic returns to the immaculate grounds of the Champion Course at PGA National Resort & Spa, where the PGA Tour’s top players compete for an $8 million purse. On Oct. 31Nov. 6, 2022, the TimberTech Championship brings golf’s greatest to Boca Raton’s venerable Old Course at Broken Sound for a $2 million purse. PalmBeachSports.com

Locally based African American Golfers Hall of Fame Supports Diversity

Palm Beach County Commissioner Mack Bernard presented the AAGHOF with a proclamation, at the Riviera Beach Event Center, with 2021 attendees.

Malachi Knowles, Founder Inner City Youth Golfers, Inc.; African American Golfers Hall of Fame; and African American Collegiate & Youth Golfers Hall of Fame

For more on the African American Golfers Hall of Fame, and to support its mission with the purchase of branded golf shirts and hats, please visit africanamericangolfershalloffame.com

Continuing its mission to promote inclusivity in sports, the African American Golfers Hall of Fame (AAGHOF) hosted its 16th annual celebration in the spring of 2021. The Palm Beaches’ only hall of fame that recognizes organizations and individuals on a national level, the Riviera Beach-based AAGHOF honors outstanding contributions to the sport of golf from a historically under-represented demographic. The organization was founded by Malachi Knowles, with Essie Knowles, as Executive Director, ICYG. The five-day event included educational seminars, a golf tournament at Long Pine Golf Course, and the annual induction ceremony. Among the 2021 inductees were a leader for women in golf, the first African American golf coach to win a high school state championship in Georgia, the CEO of Golf Tournament Productions, a seven-time national champion in amateur golf, the president of Black College Golf Coaches Association, and the first woman to coach a men’s college golf team. The inductees and Hall of Fame members traveled from nine states as well as the Bahamas to attend. In addition to garnering national exposure and acknowledgements for Palm Beach County in the broader world of professional athletics, the AAGHOF serves as a beacon for inclusiveness in sports and furthers diversity within the great game of golf.

International Gay Polo Brings LGBTQ Equity to the Forefront

For five days each April, the International Polo Club Palm Beach, the only high-goal polo venue in North America, opens its fields exclusively to LGBTQ competitors. Returning April 6-10, 2022, the International Gay Polo Tournament, created to generate awareness and to move the needle forward for LGBTQ athletes, has become a fixture in the Palm Beaches, merging challenging horse sport with a lively atmosphere, complete with themed tailgate parties, DJ-spun dance music and pop-up salons, creating a wholly unique spin on the centuries-old game of polo. It’s just one of the ways the Palm Beaches supports diversity, equity and inclusion, both on and off the field, among players and spectators alike. Palm Beach County and its LGBTQ-centered organizations offer a safe and welcoming atmosphere year-round, while annual events such as the twoday Palm Beach Pride parade (each March) and Stonewall Black and White Ball (each June) shine a spotlight on the community. In fact, cities of the Palm Beaches regularly rank among the friendliest LGBTQ+ regions in the country. To be “out” in the Palm Beaches is to be among friends.
