TEEING OFF PGA National Resort & Spa ranked among top in United States
The Champion Course
PGA National has long been known for its storied history as a legendary site for major golf championships. From Ryder Cup play to Junior and Senior PGA Championships, to PGA TOUR events, The Champion course has hosted them all. However, in 2011 PGA National has added to its lore with a host of awards and recognition from national publications. A 49 spot rise in Golfweek magazine’s annual rankings of its ‘Best Resort Courses’ tops the recent list of honors bestowed upon the legendary Champion course. The move from number 96 in 2010 to number 47 in 2011 puts PGA National ahead of all but one other course in the state of Florida on this heralded list. The survey, which included 100 U.S. courses, examined overall strength of routing, feature shaping, natural setting, greens, variety and memorability of holes, conditioning and maintenance, landscape management and other criteria. The Champion again evoked praise from Golfweek’s panel of raters in 2011, moving 15 spots in just three years to number three in Florida in the magazine’s annual “Best You Can Play – In State” rankings. “Our rise up Golfweek’s ratings further validates that PGA National offers an extraordinary resort experience,” says Joel Paige, Vice President and Managing Director. “With The Champion course, our four other outstanding layouts, renowned golf academies, world-class spa, fine dining and plentiful array of amenities, we provide our guests a stay they’ll never forget.” Adding to the recognition, Golf World magazine lauded the newly remodeled pro shop at PGA National in its annual list of the “100 Best Golf Shops for 2011”. The pro shop incorporated a new member check in area along with a rearrangement and addition of a new main display area and counter space to add to the more modern look and feel. The outcome leaves the pro

shop looking more spacious than ever for resort guests or members to browse for the latest in golf apparel. “Our golf shop renovation is a prime example of our commitment to continuing to provide our guests a superior resort and member experience,” says Joel Paige, Vice President and Managing Director. “Whether enjoying the ease of checking in for your round, utilizing our TOUR quality practice facilities and teaching academies, or trying to tame the mighty Bear Trap on The Champion, a golf vacation here at PGA National is hard to beat.” Previous prestigious awards include Golf Magazine’s “Silver Award” as a Premier Resort and a “Top 10 ‘Green’ Resort” in 2010 as well as the “Reader’s Choice” award in Golf World Magazine’s “50 Best Golf Resorts” in the nation. “Some of the biggest names in the business have noted the improvements and overall feedback has been outstanding,” said Paige “The team of professionals here has done a tremendous job and we are thrilled to show off the final stages of this major renovation.” Off of the golf course, PGA National is no stranger to achievement either, with honors from Spa Finder magazine as the “Top 10 Best for Golf” in the Readers’ Choice Awards. Additionally, Spa Magazine named The Spa at PGA National to its 2010 list of “Best Spas in the Southeast”. PGA National has garnered recognition for its conventions and meetings as the legendary destination was named a recipient of the prestigious Gold Tee Award from Meetings and Conventions magazine for the 21st year in a row, as well as the publication’s Gold Key Award from 1997 - 2009. TheKnot.com and its readers also found PGA National exceptional, naming it as a pick in the “Best Reception Sites” for 2010. Now celebrating its 30th year, PGA National truly does deliver, as the slogan says, “A Championship Experience” on and off the course.

TEEING OFF PGA National goes “GREEN” PGA National Resort & Spa Gains “Two Palm” Designation Reducing Waste and Conserving Energy PGA National Resort & Spa has been welcomed once again into the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Green Lodging program. The Green Lodging Program was established in 2004 with the intent of recognizing and rewarding environmentally conscientious lodging facilities in the state. So far, PGA National Resort & Spa is one of only two resorts in Palm Beach County and one of only fourteen resorts in the state to receive a “Two Palm” designation. Receiving “Two Palm” status was not an easy feat considering the legendary location had to show significant improvements over last year, when they were first welcomed into the program in the midst of a resort-wide $65 million transformation. In addition to meeting the DEP’s Green Lodging requirements, PGA National Resort & Spa has instituted a resort-wide environmental policy. The policy requires that the resort’s facilities and properties will be managed in an environmentally responsible manner and that it will participate, as appropriate, in community, industry and/or government sponsored groups addressing issues affecting the communities it serves. An assigned Safety Committee and PGA National’s own “Green Team” monitor the resort’s efforts and ensure that all departments are complying with, and exceeding, resort environmental guidelines. The extensive renovations at PGA National Resort & Spa created a unique opportunity for the historic golf destination to make luxurious upgrades to the property while at the same time, enhancing conservation efforts. Debris from the construction site was recycled, unused furniture and fixtures left from the project were donated to Habitat for Humanity, electronic and technology products were recycled and donated, and high-efficiency air filters were installed. “On behalf of the entire resort staff, our guests, and our industry partners, we are affirming our commitment to reduce our toll on the environment,” said Joel Paige, Managing Director. “Through the extensive recycling program that has been part of our recent renovations, we’ve been
14
PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA
able to reduce waste, recycle debris and make significant donations to local charities. Through mindful operations and careful planning, we hope to make a difference, even in small ways.” To date, PGA National Resort & Spa has implemented numerous environmental carbon conserving practices including: use of electronic communication vehicles; linen reuse programs; installation of low-flow aerators, sensor water
faucets, low-flow toilets, compact fluorescent light bulbs and computerized air conditioning management; use of environmentally friendly cleaning and pest-control products; and extensive recycling. In addition, they developed and implemented performance improvement goals, and evaluated their progress throughout the previous year. “We are proud to recognize PGA National Resort & Spa as a Two Palm member of Florida’s Green Lodging Program,” said Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Director of Sustainable Initiatives, Deas Bohn. “This designation proves the facility’s commitment to protecting Florida’s natural resources for future generations and to being an industry leader in environmental stewardship.”

TEEING OFF Bear Trap takes a Bite out of Field at Honda Classic Sabbatini Hangs on for Win at PGA National
“It should be won or lost right here,” is inscribed on a plaque next to a giant bronze bear entering the 15th hole on The Champion course. The words, originally uttered by Jack Nicklaus about holes 15 thru 17 (nicknamed The Bear Trap), were never truer than during the 2011 Honda Classic. On a week filled with 30 mile per hour winds that made the treacherous conditions that accompany a PGA TOUR event even more so, Rory Sabbatini managed to play the infamous three hole stretch one under par earning his 5th career victory. Sabbatini’s -9 performance for the week was good enough for a one shot victory over former Honda Classic champion Y.E. Yang, thanks in part to a definitive birdie on the menacing 16th hole. While the rest of the field managed to shoot only one over par through the Bear Trap for the tournament, Sabbatini’s strategy of playing for the middle of the green through that stretch paid off with a win. Y.E. Yang mounted a final round charge including late birdies on 15 and 18 to shoot a 66 and finish -8 for the week, alone in second place. “There’s a pretty good reason they call it the Bear Trap, because if it doesn’t get you one way, it’s going to get you another,” said Rory Sabbatini. “It definitely
16
PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA
caused some stress for me.” The industrial strength trifecta lived up to its billing as No. 15, a par 3 of 179 yards, captured 60 balls in the water. The 434-yard par 4 16th gobbled up 25. No. 17, a par 3 of 205 yards, was a watery grave for 65 more balls bringing the grand total to 150 — the most ever for the event. A record crowd of over 111,000 spectators watched along with millions of TV viewers as The Champion took a bite out of one of the finest fields in Honda Classic history. As the start of the “Florida Swing,” the Honda Classic has become one of the more prestigious stops on TOUR due to the stature of The Champion Course, challenge of The Bear Trap and plethora of amenities offered at PGA National – where the majority of the field stays during the tournament. The resort’s Ironwood Grille and sophisticated iBAR in its spacious lobby have become two of the best spots to mingle with PGA TOUR players. “This was our fifth time hosting the Honda Classic and the event gets more spectacular every year,” said Joel Paige, Vice President and Managing Director of PGA National. Look for The Honda Classic again in March of 2012 and try your hand at The Bear Trap if you have a chance while at PGA National.

PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN AS ONE OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S most legendary golf destinations. The resort now seeks to become known as one of the premier golf resort destinations in the United States wide. The resort embarked upon a multi-million dollar renovation of the public areas, restaurants, pool, and private Member Clubhouse in 2007. The project re-defined the PGA National Resort experience at every level. Renovations began with the front entrance for the resort, and have continued with a completely renovated lobby, featuring a contemporary lobby bar called iBar, a new restaurant, Ironwood Grille, and Café Pronto serving Starbuck’s Coffee. Just outside the lobby is a new zero entry pool and kids water play area, along with a re-developed Wave Bar & Grill. An exciting 5,000 square foot outdoor pool pavilion overlooking the resort’s 8-acre lake and famed golf courses serves as the perfect spot for open air meetings. The resort’s Palmer Course also saw a complete renovation and is now up to professional tournament standards. Also completely transformed, is the two-story private Member Clubhouse. And now, coming in the summer of 2011 is a state of the art renovation of the 339 guest rooms and suites, an example of which you will find in the images above. With this new look and feel PGA National is sure to create legendary memories for generations to come.

The Champion Course
THE MOST STORIED OF ALL THE COURSES AT PGA National, The Champion was the site of the the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship, as well as the permanent home for the PGA Seniors' Championship from 1982-2000. The course underwent a $4 million redesign by Jack Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Design Team in 1990 followed by a renovation in 2002. From those changes the infamous "Bear Trap" was born with one of the toughest three hole stretches in golf. The Honda Classic, one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR, is currently played here each spring. The Champion provides players with the finest playing surfaces available anywhere, and it leads PGA National’s lineup of award-winning courses.

THE HAIG WAS THE FIRST COURSE OPENED FOR play at PGA National Resort in 1980. Named after golf great Walter Hagen, this spectacular layout was designed by George and Tom Fazio to provide quality golf for all types of players. In fact, careful study reveals there are no crossing water hazards, so golfers always have the option of playing around rather than over or through - a water hazard. The 9th and 18th holes return to the Clubhouse area, facilitating 9-hole play from the 1st and 10th tees.

The Squire Course
NAMED AFTER THE IMMORTAL GENE SARAZEN, THE FIRST golfer ever to win the professional Grand Slam, "the thinking man's course" is the ultimate test of accuracy and precision. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Squire is the shortest and the most exacting of the courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Accuracy with fairway woods and long irons is tested on many tees and the new smaller "emerald bermuda" greens demand precise approach shots. Several doglegs provide a risk reward opportunity for any longer hitter as well. The Squire is surrounded by natural environmental areas and teeming with native vegetation, which attracts an abundance of wildlife. The 5th hole even runs along part of the wilderness preserve, which borders the west side of the PGA National community.

NAMED AFTER ITS DESIGNER, ARNOLD PALMER, this course is one of the more forgiving at PGA National from tee to fairway and known as a risk reward course. The open fairways and larger Champion Bermuda greens can be quite accommodating and invite players to take a chance if they dare as golfers are not overly penalized for missing the fairway or primary rough on most holes. There is a considerable amount of undulation through the fairway presenting the opportunity for uneven lies and creative shotmaking, and even a nod to its Scottish roots with a links style routing, and holes 8 and 12 sharing a common green. The Palmer has a great series of finishing holes, with the 18th being one of the most scenic and picturesque par 5s on the property.

The Estates Course
DESIGNED BY KARL LITTEN, THE ESTATES COURSE HAS an enjoyable mix of challenging and docile holes. The course sets up for any level of player as it is one of the shorter courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Where golfers are tested is in the formidable placement of fairway bunkers and water hazards. Generous fairways at this course will often make stray tee shots more manageable and the large, inviting greens help keep the course fun for the high handicapper. Forced carries to many of the greens over either hazards or bunkers create a test that makes each round more enjoyable than the last and with a very open feeling created by the property-wide housing set backs, the course seems almost like a core golf course. The Estates course is located 5 miles west of the main resort.

LEGENDARY GOLF MOMENTS AT PGA NATIONAL
A DIVOT TO REMEMBER The Ryder Cup Matches Oct. 14-16, 1983 PGA National Golf Club (Champion Course) Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The 25th Ryder Cup Matches were anything but a repeat of past domination by the United States stable of talent. In fact, this edition staged at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course served as the transition to a new era of compelling drama in the sport. With both sides in an 8-8 deadlock following two days of competition, the remaining 12 singles matches were intense and featured some of the event’s most memorable shotmaking. Spain’s Seve Ballesteros secured a halve with Fuzzy Zoeller when he struck a 240-yard 3-wood from a bunker on the 18th hole. The ball landed on the fringe of the green from where he chipped and saved par. Those who witnessed the shot have deemed it one of the greatest recovery
performances in golf. Later, American Lanny Wadkins fell three down with seven to play against Spain’s Jose Maria Canizares. Wadkins trimmed the margin to one heading into the 18th hole, a par-5 dogleg left into the wind. Wadkins was encouraged when Canizares’ approach came up short of the green. Wadkins then hit a 60-yard pitching wedge approach to within a foot of the hole for a tap-in birdie to halve the match. So overcome with joy was U.S. Captain Jack Nicklaus that he marched to the spot where Wadkins hit his shot and bent down and kissed the ground. The U.S. then watched as Tom Watson bogeyed the 17th hole but closed out Bernard Gallacher, who missed a 41/2-foot bogey putt, in a 2 and 1 decision. Said European Captain Tony Jacklin, “I’m disappointed, but it could not have been any closer. Our boys put up a fantastic performance. I think the game of golf will benefit.” PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA

Nelson needed only a par-4 on the first extra hole to capture the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy and become the 15th multiple winner of the season’s final major championship.
THE CHAMP’S DEBUT 44th Senior PGA Championship Dec. 2-5, 1982 PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Senior PGA Championship was played for the first time on the difficult Champion Course at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Don January was the only player to match par over 72 holes. His 288 total was 18 strokes higher than his previous winning performance three years earlier. Former Senior PGA Champion Julius Boros, despite a 75 in the final round, was runner-up one stroke behind.

45th Senior PGA Championship Jan. 19-22, 1984 PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Arnold Palmer has given his adoring “army” of fans many warm memories, but few compare to his path to a second Senior PGA Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Palmer fired a course- and tournament-record 9-under-par 63 under ideal conditions in the second round. Palmer never relinquished the lead, despite a 79 in the third round played under high wind and with rare 40-degree temperatures. Palmer finished with a 6under-par 282, two strokes better than defending Champion Don January.

AT PGA NATIONAL WIRE-TO-WIRE FOR PETER 46th Senior PGA Championship Dec. 6-9, 1984 PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Australian Peter Thomson, a five-time British Open champion, made his first appearance in the Senior PGA Championship and claimed his largest paycheck with a $40,000 winner’s share. Thomson never gave up the lead after an opening 67, and won with a 2-under-par 286 total to defeat two-time Champion Don January by three strokes. The triumph ignited Thomson to a remarkable 1985 season when he won an all-time Champions Tour record nine championships and earned $386,724.
1986 - NOT YOUR AVERAGE PLAYER PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Back spasms forced two-time Champion Arnold Palmer to withdraw before the 47th Senior PGA Championship and defending Champion Peter Thomson stayed home in Australia. But South African Gary Player became the second foreign- born champion, scoring his second victory in three starts since turning 50 years of age nearly three months earlier. Player’s 72-hole total of 7under-par 281 was worth a two-stroke victory over Lee Elder. Player’s performance was also special in that the entire field averaged 78 strokes on the

1987 - A TIMELY PURCHASE PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Trailing third-round leader Dale Douglass by six strokes and upset over a round of 76, Chi Chi Rodriguez preceded his round by purchasing a new set of clubs from PGA National Golf Club. The result: a 5-under-par 67 to give the popular native Puerto Rican a one-stroke victory. Rodriguez later credited his longtime mentor, former Senior PGA Champion Pete Cooper, for his victory. Cooper, who missed the second-round cut, followed Rodriguez in the gallery and earlier offered a putting lesson.

PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Lee Trevino won his first Senor PGA Championship in dramatic fashion, making par-saving putts on the final two holes to finish at 10-under-par 278 and holding off Mike Hill by one stroke. Hill’s final-round 69 was the lowest round of the day. Trevino, 52, earned his 38th career victory and became the 10th player to have won the PGA Championship (1 974, ‘84) and the PGA Seniors’ Championship.
1993 - A CHAMPIONSHIP TO CHERISH PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tom Wargo of Centralia, Ill., became the first PGA club professional since 1979 to win one of senior golf’s major championships, and accomplished the feat in a memorable extra-hole duel. Wargo, who hadn’t taken up golf until age 25, was tied by Bruce Crampton after 72 holes at 13-under-par 275. Wargo defeated Crampton in a two-holE playoff, highlighted by a spectacular save for par from a greenside bunker on the 16th hole at PGA National’s Champion Course. Crampton followed by sending his tee shot on the par-3 17th hole into the water. Wargo’s tee shot found the middle of the green from where he two-putted for victory. “This one is for all the club

LEGENDARY GOLF MOMENTS professionals and the fans,” said Wargo, hoisting the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy.
1994 - BEAR TRAP SWALLOWS FLOYD, TREVINO EMERGES UNSCATHED PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Raymond Floyd, once revered as one of the game’s all-time top front-runners, squandered a four-stroke lead on the final nine holes at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course. Playing partner Lee Trevino cashed in on Floyd’s misadventure into the closing four-hole stretch nicknamed “The Bear Trap.” Floyd knocked two balls into the water and posted a quadruple bogey on the 164yard 15th hole. Then, Floyd capped his frustrations by hitting a 7-iron into the pond and came out with a double bogey on the par-3 17th. Trevino walked away with his second Senior PGA Championship in three years. Trevino made an insignificant bogey on the 72nd hole to finish with a 2-under-par 70 and a 9-under-par 279. He was a stroke better than Jim Colbert and two strokes ahead of Floyd (75) and Dave Stockton (72).
1995 - FLOYD FINDS REDEMPTION PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. There was no reason to look back, Raymond Floyd said, only forward in a bid for his first Senior PGA Championship. Floyd became the 11th player in history to win both a PGA Seniors’ Championship and PGA Championship by avenging his 1994 final-round collapse. Floyd built a two-stroke lead on Jim Colbert after three rounds and made two front-nine birdies in the final round before stringing together 14 consecutive pars and a fivestroke victory margin over John Paul Cain, Larry Gilbert and two-time
champion Lee Trevino. Floyd punctuated his loth career victory as a senior professional by hitting 61 of 72 greens in regulation, the most of any player in the 56th Senior PGA Championship.
1996 - HALE FOILS THE ‘BEAR TRAP’ PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Two weeks after he let a three-stroke lead evaporate in the desert in losing the Tradition, Hale Irwin found sweet redemption among the swaying palms at PGA National Golf Club by winning the 57th Senior PGA Championship. A threetime U.S. Open champion, Irwin withstood a shaky 74 in the second round, built his lead to four strokes heading into the “Bear Trap” final stretch of holes at the Champion Course and deflected the challenges of Japan’s Isao Aoki and Argentinean Vicente Fernandez. Perhaps Irwin’s defining moment of the Championship was a tee shot on the treacherous par-3 15th hole. His ball landed 35 feet from the flagstick but was dry. He cruised home for a 71, with meaningless bogeys on the final two holes not spoiling his first major championship as a senior player. Irwin’s 72-hole total of 8-under-par 280 was two strokes better than Aoki, who notched his fourth top-5 finish with a 71-282. Fernandez, competing on a special invitation, finished 73-284.
1997 - IRWIN LEAVES HIS IMPRINT PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. After winning his first Senior PGA Championship in 1996, Hale Irwin said he was disappointed that he couldn’t keep the momentum alive the remainder of the year. Irwin said he suffered in course management and generally “was just
Larry Nelson
pushing the envelope. I was just trying to do things that maybe I shouldn’t be trying.” Irwin arrived at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., a year later on a mission. Winning wasn’t the only thought he had. He had designs on a greater year. Irwin posted a methodical 4under-par 68 on his way to a 12-stroke victory and a second consecutive title in the 58th Senior PGA Championship presented by Advil. It was the largest victory margin for any Champions Tour professional and the second-highest margin in Senior PGA Championship history. Sam Snead won by 15 strokes in 1973, just three miles down the road at now-BallenIsles Country Club. The 51year-old Irwin became the first back-to-back winner in Championship history since Snead in 1972 and 1973, and the fifth player to win consecutive Senior PGA Championship titles. Irwin is the 12th multiple champion in event history. His 14under-par 274 total was his third victory of the year, a season in which he would go on to tie the Senior PGA Tour record with nine victories, become golf’s first $2 million season money-winner and be named Senior PGA Tour Player of the Year. 1998 - ANOTHER HALE STORM PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. As if he had something to prove to his peers, Hale Irwin captured a third consecutive Senior PGA Championship by a seven-stroke margin at wind-blown PGA National Golf Club. Irwin’s finalround 2-under-par 70 and 13-under-par 275 total for 72 holes made him the second player to win three consecutive Senior PGA Championships. Irwin became the first player since 1956 — when Peter Thomson won a third straight British Open — to win three consecutive major championships on any tour. Larry Nelson finished runnerup and Gil Morgan was eight strokes back after each had closing 72s. Irwin’s preparation was one reason he handled the changing wind conditions. He arrived six days early to PGA National’s Champion Course to practice. Said Nelson, "Hale just played great. He did what he had to do and didn’t leave any room for anybody to catch him."

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Doyle became the 18th player to win the Senior PGA Championship in his first attempt. He overpowered the Champion Course in the final round, a performance that included an eagle chip-in on the par5 10th hole and a 186-yard 3-iron approach to the 16th that left him with a one-foot birdie putt. Doyle’s 14-under-par 274 total, two strokes better than Argentinian Vicente Fernandez. Doyle’s golf swing closely resembles that of a hockey player and the Champion was reminded of that. “I should have brought a hockey helmet and put it on coming down the 18th hole,” he said. “Then, I’d really be known for something.” But Doyle left his mark, helmet or not. He finished his first year as a senior professional with four victories.
Senior PGA Championship PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. April 13-17, 2000 In just his 12th start as a senior Tour professional, Doug Tewell may have found his lost touch. Tewell, who believed he had what it takes to win on the over-50 circuit, was a model of consistency during a Senior PGA Championship that ran anywhere but to form. Despite seven weather interruptions that extended the Championship to Monday and trimmed the event for the first time since 1957 to 54 holes, Tewell shined. The former Oklahoma State standout took the lead with a birdie on the second hole of the second round (a round of 66 that took 2 days to complete) and held the lead the final 34 holes. His winning 15-under-par 201 was seven strokes ahead of Dana Quigley, Larry Nelson, Tom Kite and three-time Champion Hale Irwin. Tewell became the 19th player in history to win the Senior PGA Championship on his first attempt.
