Welcome Letter
Welcome from PGA National Resort & Spa We proudly welcome you to PGA National Resort & Spa, home of The Honda Classic. We recently completed a $125 million revitalization of this landmark resort, golf mecca and conference facility. The renaissance of this legendary South Florida destination includes floor-toceiling makeovers of our 339 guest rooms, luxurious, themed suites, and the new iDECK – a 2,000-square-foot terrace, ideal for al fresco dining from Ironwood Steak & Seafood, or the perfect spot to relax and unwind and enjoy a glass of wine after your busy day. Our investment includes the new Sports & Racquet Club, a 33,000-square-foot sports complex that features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, indoor racquet ball court, three aerobics studios with new sound systems, five-lane saltwater lap pool, spin room with video road mapping, two lighted pickle / paddle ball courts, and 18 Har Tru tennis courts. We offer over 75 exercise classes weekly for our guests. The Honda Classic is known to have one of the best venues on the PGA TOUR, drawing a top field of players, who love the course and enjoy Palm Beach County. Our Champion Course is touted as the most challenging in Florida, and The Bear Trap, comprised of Holes 15-17, is considered one of the toughest stretches of golf on the PGA TOUR, along with Hole 14, newly redesigned by Jack Nicklaus. We invite you to play this revered course, along with our other four championship golf courses right here at PGA National. A visit to PGA National Resort & Spa would not be complete without a service at The Spa at PGA, recently selected as one of the Top 25 US Resort Spas by Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards. Another must stop is the famous iBAR, well-known as the best “bar scene” on the PGA Tour. PGA National is about the PGA Lifestyle. Inquire about Membership opportunities at The Members Club, ask out extended stays via our Vacation Home Rental program, or meet with one of our onsite realtors. Stay, play and live the PGA Lifestyle! From the championship tees,

PGA Lifestyle editor shares her personal recommendations from this legendary resort, that continues to inspire, delight, surprise and make memories for its guests throughout the years.
bed with television and dining table, and just enough room to have friends and family stay over. The perfect room for kids.
Best in Show:
Teebox on Hole 17. Great place to watch golf ’s greatest athletes tee off up close and personal. Kids can sit on the grass and be mesmerized for hours. And of course, trophy ceremony on 18 to catch some unexpected special moments.
PGA National’s children’s year round tennis and golf camps for local and international children of all ages. The future of golf and tennis are the kids. Most staff instructors have been with the kids for several years and are instrumental in their youth programs.
Favorite thing to do at The Spa at PGA National: The Neuromuscular Massage. It is an incredible muscle and stress pain reliever. The expert therapists quickly hone in on your trouble area, and release the toxins and loosen your muscles. Drink plenty of water afterward, and this will be a substitute for a week of physical therapy. Perfect for an exercise or golf game strain, or just too much computer work.
Who is the most inspiring person you have met at PGA National: Jack Nicklaus. Inspirational by just being in his presence. I had the honor to work with him when he redesigned hole #14 of the Champ, and his personal involvement and focus on excellence and the golfer’s experience was overwhelming and awe-inspiring, as well as his dedication and support of children’s charities.
Something about PGA National that guests may not know: PGA National is very furry friendly….small and medium size dogs are welcome and even have their own wing, with easy access to the outdoors.
What is a feature at the resort that you would like to share: The 75+ exercise classes a week at the new Sports & Racquet Club. Free to resort guests and Club members.
Do you have a recommended room type: I personally love the Jr. Suites. You have an oversize sofa/pull out

The Champion Course
The most storied of all the courses at PGA National, The Champion was the site of the the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship, as well as the permanent home for the PGA Seniors' Championship from 1982-2000. The course underwent a $4 million redesign by Jack Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Design Team in 1990 followed by a renovation in 2002. From those changes the infamous "Bear Trap" was born with one of the toughest three hole stretches in golf. The Honda Classic, one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR, is currently played here each spring. The Champion provides players with the finest playing surfaces available anywhere, and it leads PGA National’s line-up of award-winning courses.

PGA National Resort is proud to present the new Fazio course. The Fazio is a reinvention of The Haig, PGA National Resort & Spa's original 18-hole course that opened in 1980. While the original par-72 routing remains intact, the renovation improves the classic golf architecture with modern advances, including: n A 70% increase in total green surface to 2.5 acres, grassed with TifEagle on the greens and Celebration Bermuda grass on tees and fairways n Reconfigured tee boxes and bunkers n Player-friendly tees allowing the course to be played at 5,100 yards in accordance with the popular “Tee it Forward initiative sponsored by the PGA and USGA

the squire course
Named after the immortal Gene Sarazen, the first golfer ever to win the professional Grand Slam, "the thinking man's course" is the ultimate test of accuracy and precision. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Squire is the shortest and the most exacting of the courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Accuracy with fairway woods and long irons is tested on many tees and the new smaller "emerald bermuda" greens demand precise approach shots. Several doglegs provide a risk reward opportunity for any longer hitter as well. The Squire is surrounded by natural environmental areas and teeming with native vegetation, which attracts an abundance of wildlife. The 5th hole even runs along part of the wilderness preserve, which borders the west side of the PGA National community.

Named after its designer, Arnold Palmer, this course is one of the more forgiving at PGA National from tee to fairway and known as a risk reward course. The open fairways and larger Champion Bermuda greens can be quite accommodating and invite players to take a chance if they dare as golfers are not overly penalized for missing the fairway or primary rough on most holes. There is a considerable amount of undulation through the fairway presenting the opportunity for uneven lies and creative shotmaking, and even a nod to its Scottish roots with a links style routing, and holes 8 and 12 sharing a common green. The Palmer has a great series of finishing holes, with the 18th being one of the most scenic and picturesque par 5s on the property.

the estates course
Designed by Karl Litten, The Estates course has an enjoyable mix of challenging and docile holes. The course sets up for any level of player as it is one of the shorter courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Where golfers are tested is in the formidable placement of fairway bunkers and water hazards. Generous fairways at this course will often make stray tee shots more manageable and the large, inviting greens help keep the course fun for the high handicapper. Forced carries to many of the greens over either hazards or bunkers create a test that makes each round more enjoyable than the last and with a very open feeling created by the property-wide housing set backs, the course seems almost like a core golf course. The Estates course is located 5 miles west of the main resort.

EVERY BALL COUNTS When I was asked to write an article about my experience at the Every Ball Counts Program at PGA National, I couldn’t think of anything easier for me to do because of my excitement in the program and my love for the PGA National Golf Resort.
I’d like to start off by talking specifically about at the Every Ball Counts (EBC) Program. I am brand new in the program and after just one day in the program, my mind was completely made up that I was going to be a full time student in the program. It sure didn't take me long to figure out that I was just giving money away on Tour by not being involved in the program.

IF
you are interested in shooting lower scores no matter what level you are playing at, then this program is the very best way to help you learn to do that. When I first arrived to start the program it was explained to me that they were not going to give me a lesson, instead they were going to help me improve by showing me where I need to improve and show me my percentages and stats for every area of my game compared to the averages of players on the PGA Tour. When you spend a day in the Every Ball Counts Program you hit approximately 300 balls in every aspect of your game from driving, fairway woods, hybrids, long irons, short irons, wedges, half wedges, three quarter wedges, chipping and putting. You name it - you do it. The biggest difference here is that every single shot that you hit is treated like it is the most important shot that you are going to hit. You try to put yourself in a tournament situation. You go through your entire mental process and pre shot routine on every single shot. You learn real quick that every single shot that you hit in practice really means something. You don’t waste any shots by just hitting balls without a purpose.

Each shot is put into the computer and when you are done, the computer then analyzes every shot you hit and you learn where you stand in comparison to PGA Tour players in every aspect of the game and you learn where you can pick up strokes by getting better in the areas that need more work. It is very specific. You might learn that your biggest weakness is on shots from 175 yards to 200 yards. Or you might learn that you need a lot of extra work on your short game shots from 30 yards to 50 yards. You will then learn how many shots you can pick up by getting better in each area of your game. Then a plan is laid out on specifically what you need to do in each area to improve your scores. There is even a training app for your phone or your tablet that you will work with when you go home to help you track your progress as you continue to work on the specific parts of your game. I’ve never seen anything that can help you learn more about your own game and how you can improve. Everyone that goes through the program will learn about areas in their games where they are better than they thought but they will also learn about areas in their games that they are not as good as they thought. GAMES By Dan Schlossberg
Without golf, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz might not be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
During their ten-year tenure as the three-headed monster of the Atlanta Braves’ starting rotation, the pitchers spent so much time together on the links that they had ample opportunity to share trade secrets – much to the dismay of National League hitters.

Smoltz, part of a four-man 2015 induction class, even kept a little black book – filled not with phone numbers and measurements of adoring female fans but with intricate details of golf courses around the league. In his book Starting and Closing, Smoltz even referred to himself as his team’s “golf concierge.” It helped that they had a manager (Bobby Cox) and general manager (John Schuerholz) who also knew the difference between a caddy and a Cadillac. The only team in the history of professional sports to finish in first place for 14 consecutive years, the Braves became so enamored with golf that they planned a golf event on the lone off-day in the spring training exhibition game schedule. It came to be known as the SWT, or Schuerholz Wins Tournament. It seems nobody liked the idea of beating the team president in a friendly social contest. “When the outcome of the SWT golf outing no longer lived up to its initials, I realized somebody must have real good job security,” says Schuerholz today. “My team started losing the tournament. It went the way of all good ideas.” The long-time executive, whose teams won world championships in both leagues, remains a huge booster of golf as an in-season recreational outlet for his players. “Any way you can foster a bonding of relationships and personalities and get to spend more time with each other, the stronger they get. It’s all about fostering a joy-filled relationship with the people with whom you work and with whom you grind every day.” Glavine agrees. “Golf was our outlet,” says the lefthanded winner of 305 games. “Pitchers have good games and bad games. The in-between part is easy when you have a good game but when you have a bad game, it’s a little tougher. You beat yourself up for four days before you go back out there. “The ability to get out on a golf course with those guys and get away from the stress of the baseball season was good. It was therapeutic. A lot of our conversation centered around pitching. Maybe we needed to fix some things and make adjustments. And maybe one of the other guys could suggest something. We would also talk about the team we were going to face next. As much as we were having fun, we were picking each other’s brains too and trying to learn from each other.”

Smoltz, arguably the best golfer of the Hall of Fame trio, first played when he was in Lakeland, Florida with the Detroit Tigers’ Class A affiliate. He soon became a scratch golfer and 1-handicapper – good enough to play with Tiger Woods. He says he’s played in 75 of the top 100 courses in the United States and has had eight holes-in-one. He’s even played at Augusta National and tried to qualify for the U.S. Open. “Golf is the closest thing to getting ready to pitch,” he says. “There are all kinds of things that can go wrong. It’s about how you handle them. When you pitch, you make 115 pitches and decisions. Golf is the same.” The only pitcher in baseball history with more than 200 wins and 150 saves, Smoltz has a high-energy, competitive nature that shines on the links. Tiger Woods calls him the best amateur golfer he’s ever seen. “He’s a hell of an athlete,” Woods says of Smoltz. “He can play basketball. He was an incredible pitcher. But the way he is able to take that same tenacity into golf is amazing.” Earlier this year, Maddux and Glavine played for Team USA in the ICONS Cup, a two-day, Ryder Cup-style event that brought them to Dubai. They were among the A-list athletes who played morning foursomes followed by a dozen singles matches. Smoltz did not participate because of his ongoing assignment with MLB Network. Neither did Chipper Jones, who spent his entire baseball career with the Braves but also found time to play a mean game of golf. He’ll an oddson favorite for Hall of Fame election in 2018, the first year he is eligible. Making the transition from baseball to golf is not always easy, however. Hank Aaron, the career home run king before Barry Bonds toppled his crown, once said, “It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits. But I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.”
PGA 2016_Golf & Baseball.qxp_Layout 1 5/24/16 12:01 PM Page 49
Only two former players have reached the U.S. Open or its senior equivalent. Rick Rhoden, who pitched for the Dodgers and Yankees, qualified for the U.S. Senior Open in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Sammy Byrd, an outfielder with the Reds and Yankees, played in 10 U.S. Opens after leaving baseball. His claim to fame in the national game was his “Babe Ruth’s legs” nickname. It seems that the fleet Byrd often pinchran for the lumbering slugger. Smoltz hasn’t given up; he once shot a 65 and another time a 66, both on familiar courses in Georgia. “It’s fun to see how I measure up,” he says of his repeated attempts to qualify. “I would have been a completely different pitcher without the influence of Greg and Tommy,” Smoltz writes in his book. “I learned so much from those two – and golf opened the door for me. Greg and I played together for 11 years; Tommy and I for 15. If you can imagine the amount of time we spent in cars traveling to and from golf courses, let alone on the courses themselves, you start to get the idea. Golf became the medium through which we shared a lot of things, not the least of which was baseball.” On one occasion, when fellow pitcher Steve Avery joined them at the Old Marsh Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, the pitchers were on the 18th hole when they had a wildlife encounter. Scores were close, with bragging rights pending upon the outcome. As Smoltz recalls, “As we all went about our business and focused on our final shots, we all failed to notice a family of cranes, complete with little babies, meandering about in the adjacent marsh. “Steve’s ball had landed on the back edge of the green, closest to the marsh. He walks up to the green, takes a quick look at his lie, and then starts backpedaling toward the marsh, attempting to read the break. “So there’s Steve, backing up one step at a time, his attention completely focused on the pin and the distance that appears to be between it and his ball. And there are the cranes, just wandering about in the marsh, doing whatever it is cranes do. Steve was maybe 15 yards from the hole at this point, which, as it turned out, was one step too close to one of the baby cranes. “Mayhem ensued, prompting both emotion and commotion. The mama crane, obviously fearing for her young, lets out this banshee-like scream. It was seriously like something out of a horror movie it was just deafening. That alone was going to be enough to require a wardrobe change for Steve. At this point, though, his only concern was getting away from the mama crane and her precious brood. Quickly. “Meanwhile, the rest of us stood there doing what we do best: laughing our butts off. Well, that is, until we saw what was coming from the other direction: Big Daddy Crane. “He must have heard mama’s cry for help and came swooping in from Steve’s blind side. It seriously looked like the bird was going to land on his head. We’re like ‘Steve, look out behind you.’ He turns around and here’s this ginormous bird coming right for him. I mean the wingspan on this thing is god-awful big. It looked like something straight out of Jurassic Park. Steve took one look at the talons closing in on him and took off running. Once Steve had sprinted out of harm’s way, the cranes wandered off. The rest of us laughed until we cried. And then we laughed PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA

some more. Steve just walked around shaking his head.” Smoltz says he was lucky the Braves allowed their players to golf. “Every one of us took baseball seriously,” he says. “We respected the game, did our work, and were responsible when it came to fitting in time to hit the golf course, “My time on the golf course together with the guys in our rotation, especially Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, was an amazing gift to my game. I can’t imagine baseball without them or without golf.” Atlanta’s talented troika was hardly the first group of ballplayers who took to the links when time allowed. Babe Ruth was so good at the game that he won more trophies playing golf than he did playing baseball. And Ty Cobb, Ruth’s long-time rival on the diamond, took great personal pleasure in beating the Bambino not only at the ballpark but also on the golf course. In 1941, years after both had left baseball, a Ruth vs. Cobb match raised funds for the USO on the eve of American involvement in World War 2. Ruth once prepared for a baseball season by shooting 333 holes of golf in a single week. He also found ample playing time during the season because blue laws in many cities banned Sunday baseball and freed ballplayers for golf. Many other Hall of Famers also played golf. Nor did they analyze the reasons they played. As Yogi Berra once said, “I never like to golf in the morning and get involved in a ballgame at night. I don’t like to think twice in one day.” Other famous Yankees who loved the links ranged from Joe DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford. Willie Mays didn’t worry about the mental aspect of the game. “There is no difficulty hitting a golf ball,” he said. “Why should there be? The ball is just sitting there waiting for you to smack it.” Tom Seaver has a golfing pedigree: his dad Charlie was with the American team that won the 1932 Walker Cup matches against Ireland and Great Britain. In addition, Seaver’s grandfather Everett was a fine
amateur player. Robin Yount, inducted into the Hall of Fame after Seaver, was so enamored with golf that once quit baseball for two months while trying to become a professional golfer. “I injured myself on my motorcycle before spring training,” he said, “and was scared to death to let anyone know. I was unable to play like I should have so I told somebody I might have to try to play golf instead.” Yount’s hiatus lasted only two months before he returned. Like Yount, Ozzie Smith put himself on the fast track to Cooperstown by starring at shortstop. But he found golf equally challenging. “In golf, every day is a challenge,” he said. “There are so many different things to consider. Golf certainly offers some of the most complex situations I’ve found in sports.” Smith says a batter’s rhythm and timing follows the actions of the pitcher but a golfer must develop and maintain rhythm and timing throughout the game. Stitches on baseballs and dimples on golf balls increase speed and distance, he says. “The swing is somewhat similar but it’s just a different plane,” says Wade Boggs, whose string of batting titles paved the way to Cooperstown. Golf is a mental game. You have to be mentally stable for 18 holes and create shot after shot after shot.” Many executives even completed trades on golf courses – including the Leatherstocking links at the century-old Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. Both the course and the town trace their names back to early American history, when James Fenimore Cooper wrote The Leatherstocking Tales. The first permanent American course, the St. Andrews Golf Club of Yonkers, N.Y., opened in 1888 but the first course in New England followed just two years later when baseball pioneer George Wright built a temporary 10-hole course at Boston’s Franklin Park. By the turn of the century, there were more than 1,000 courses across the country – and lots of ballplayers honing their eye-hand coordination

Not-So-Guilty
Pleasures
I have become a professional Russian ballerina, moving fluidly through a set of excruciatingly difficult steps with the grace of a gazelle. I am a butterfly being lifted ever so carefully by the gentlest of lepidopterists, to help me flutter my wings, showing off their beauty without harming a fragment of their beauty. That’s what it feels like to be in the strong and gentle arms of massage therapist John Tanner, who is moving my soon-to-be limber body through the one-hour “Watsu massage” at Spa at PGA National.

A Guide to
Spa Immersion Therapy by Julie Hatfield
Watsu, I thought at first, might be an old Japanese treatment, but turns out it’s as American as a Frisbee game, begun by a Californian who thought the idea of shiatsu massage would be even nicer if done underwater, i.e. “Wat”(er) su. He was so right; I have never felt so open, fluid and free, as if my bones had turned to rubber, after Tanner invited me into one of the spa’s three swimming/soaking pools at their Waters of the World outdoor area. Tanner put his arm securely around my back, and proceeded to move me up, down and around in circles, sometimes squeezing my knees into my chest, many times pressing my coccyx up to the top of the water so that my legs and arms followed after, when they felt like it. Everything was underwater, including my ears, so that no sound but the deep gurgling waves of water, could
be heard. Even when I was part of a water ballet troupe in college, I had to use muscles and tighten my body to make the moves, so this was a completely different, free feeling of letting go that was better than a land massage because the legs and arms could float limply and easily throughout the process. Tanner says that while shiatsu and other land treatments work on the heart, helping circulation, Watsu is more beneficial to the cerebrum; i.e. your brain gets to lose stress and concomitantly the whole body relaxes. It didn’t hurt that the massage took place in The Spa at PGA’s warm mineral pool with salt crystals from the thermal waters of Salies de Bearn, France, which have been revitalizing people for 3000 years, toning the skin and relieving stress.

It’s one of two mineral pools at Waters of the World at the spa and golf resort, the other containing waters from the Dead Sea in Israel, known for relieving muscle pain and giving serenity to the soaker. The spa also offers a freshwater swimming pool and a “Roman bath,” the latter a hot tub designed to look like an ancient aqueduct. Aesthetician Frederique Miller, a former ballerina from Marseilles, watched my Watsu taking place and said it looked like a beautiful ballet performance. She then led me into her treatment room for a Hydrafacial, a soothing treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration. My dry skin sopped up the hydration of this treatment, which is also said to reduce the appearance of fine lines, winkles and hyperpigmentation. And since Paris Hilton, Adrienne Maloof, Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Winslet, Marie Osmond, Brittany Snow and Amy Poehler all have latched onto the HydraFacial, I am in good company and happy to follow their lead. The staff at the spa, all of whom seem to have interesting pre-spa lives, have a way of telling you just enough about themselves to interest you but understanding that then, most of us prefer total silence for the rest of our treatments. This was true as well of massage therapist Holly Farrar, who gave me a deep tissue Swedish massage; manicurist Angie Rawlins, who traveled the world working for a yacht captain before she came to PGA; and pedicurist Iryna Scheiner, originally from Ukraine. The latter two gave me “Lavender Bliss” treatments, which add delicious-smelling French lavender cream to

the hand and feet massages. Before your pedicure here, you can choose to put your feet into either orange mango coconut mineral salt water or green tea and lemon grass water, touted for their natural cleansing. There is very little staff turnover at this spa. Many have been here --happily, they say – for 10 and even 20 years, almost since it was first opened, in 1992. The spa is enormous – 40,000 square feet – and it includes a café where you can order healthy sandwich wraps and fruit smoothies for lunch. It features a list of “Super” foods such as avocados, beets and spinach, which have good health benefits as well as nice taste. Its waiting room features Impressionist-style green/blue artwork with an occasional palm tree thrown in, and cut pieces of fresh oranges and grapefruit in addition to the usual cucumber and lemon water, coffee and tea. Meanwhile, Waters of the World is the perfect name for this whole poolheavy resort, which boasts no fewer than nine pools, including a saltwater lap pool in their newly renovated racquet and fitness facility, and a zero entry kids’ pool. There’s a kids’ club, too, but the beauty of Waters of the World spa is that it is child-free, so the only sound that’s heard while you’re relaxing in a cabana or lounge chair is the soothing, other-worldly piped-in spa music.. Just after we arrived at the PGA spa on the first day, my husband and I were ushered into our own private cabana by the pools, after which we each had our own massage, which greatly helped sore golf and travel muscles. Tim is not one to lie around on a beach, but he took to the cabana by the pools happily, reading and listen-
PGA 2016_Spa 2.qxp_Layout 1 5/24/16 11:58 AM Page 55
Staff ing to the music, which he said made him feel he had entered a different world . Taking his own good time, he eventually tried all four of the pools by his feet. And said he was sure that the mineral waters helped to soothe a recovering case of poison ivy on his skin. It is not always easy for couples at a spa to relax together, as the waiting rooms are usually restricted to men-or women-only, so this central meeting area by the mineral pools was ideal for us. Oh yes, I was at PGA Resort to play golf for two days, and we played a great 18 holes on Fazio course the first day. But I will admit (don’t tell my husband, please), that when we woke to an early morning rain the next morning, I said “Too bad, no golf today. I’ll just have to hang out at the spa all day,” which I did, with not-so-guilty pleasure. Golf
as the Main Attraction at PGA National Resort and Spa
With a name like PGA National Resort & Spa, home of the annual Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens Florida, you’d be right to assume that golf is big here with five on site championship golf courses. 58
PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA
But even for travelers who haven't swung a club and never plan on it, PGA National's wide array of dining and foodie events make it a premier go-to Florida escape. “I can’t think of a better place to start my day than at the Palm Terrace, says Executive Chef Sean McKee. Fresh baked daily pastries, Florida sun ripened fruits, and an array of hot dishes make your choices healthy and strategically set up to get you on the links pronto. After challenging The Champ, McKee's favorite 18 holes of scratch golfing, lunch is a hard choice between the artisan sandwiches at Bar 91 (the name comes from totaling all the holes on all 5 on site golf courses) and iBar featuring sharable plates like Blackened Mahi Tacos with Mango Pico de Gallo as well as light bites like their Watermelon and Feta Salad. When night falls, the iClub Piano bar serves as the resort lobby's centerpiece hosting world class vocalists backed by classic jazz, contemporary, and Caribbean keyboarding. Open seasonally October - April

Thursday through Saturday from 6-9 p.m., the piano bar menu gives you just one more excuse for sampling some distinctive cocktails like the Ultimate Side Car mixed with Hennessey XO and Grand Marnier 100 Year Celebration, and tapas like their massive Treasure Coast Lump Crab Cakes. iBar becomes the on-site night hot spot especially with DJ or live music Thursday to Saturday. “Out of some of the most creative cocktails South Florida has to offer, my iBar personal favorite is the PGA Garden Bloom, a seductive blend of pear vodka and Sauvignon Blanc muddled with strawberries kissed with a drop of fresh squeezed lemon and lavender-rosemary syrup”, McKee advises. The newly opened iDeck overlooking the pool and lake in the background can be reserved exclusively for groups where guest preference is the only limitation on chef creativity. “The bottom line is that all 9 on-site dining menus continuously evolve using newly sourced
local ingredients as well as new twists on traditional classics”, enthuses McKee. And for those who can’t resist a tropical view, alfresco dining from the Ironwood Steak & Seafood menu is also available at iDeck. But the fine culinary delights coming out of PGA National Resort & Spa’s kitchens aren't strictly confined to the formalized restaurants. PGA National's very own mobile gourmet iTruck periodically opens up as the resort's 92-second hole and catering local events & parties with comfort food like BBQ pork sliders, Birdie Shrimp, truffle fries, and lobster sliders. Across the seasons and throughout each day, PGA National Resort & Spa nicely balances the indulgence of playing on 5 world class golf courses with sophisticated and widely varying culinary experiences. And this balance is especially attractive for families who may be at different points along the spectrum in their enthusiasm for golf yet united by the allure of great food and relaxation.

Ironwood
O
ut of all 9 on site venues to grab a bite at PGA National Resort & Spa, Ironwood Steak & Seafood stands out for being that ultra-luxe dining escape that you so much deserve. The menu centers around exactly what the restaurant's name implies. But the magic resides in its plush conversation-inducing ambiance, impeccably personalized service, and how Executive Chef Sean McKee artfully builds signature dishes using seasonally fresh ingredients along with locally caught Mahi-Mahi, Red Snapper, and Florida Spiny Lobsters. Their pantheon of opulently cut steaks begins with a 32-ounce Wagyu Tomahawk Bone-In Ribeye for Two followed by a Kansas City 21-day dry-aged prime seared to perfection in a Vulcan 1,200-degree broiler. “Even as Executive Chef, every time I dine at Ironwood, I still have the giddy anticipation of a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for the next dish to come out of the kitchen”, says McKee. Cheeses and meats come from local farms and fresh seafood are caught by wellconnected day boat fishermen. Favorite starters include the Low Country style classic She Crab Soup silky and fresh on the palate while the sushi grade Tuna Tartare is a twist on the classic using local Honeybell tangelos, avocados, shaved jalapeno served with a house made Yuzu Ponzu on a hydroponic Bibb lettuce cup with a dab of Sri Racha.

Satisfying sides like their chive risotto, wild mushroom ragu, or an order of Skinless Twice Baked Potato along with grilled Jumbo Asparagus give you some wiggle room for indulging in the daily chef's trio of mousse or a triple chocolate brownie sundae appropriately named “Mortal Sin” with every topping you could imagine. The menu's diversity based on top grade ingredients are all thanks to Chef McKee's approach to cooking. “I am a huge fan of traveling and eating at different restaurants. From the 3 star Michelin rated Alain Ducasse in Paris to roadside food trucks in Spain, I take the opportunity to gather ideas and techniques. I am a humble chef and continue to grow as I teach young up and coming chefs. When they have new great ideas about food and flavor combinations or presentations, I absorb from them as well. My training will never be complete.” When it comes to wine pairings, you can shoot the moon thanks to their floor-to-ceiling 1000 bottle wine room. A remarkable 36 vintages available by the glass include PGA Private Label Cabernet Sauvignon made in Napa exclusively for the resort. For locals, Ironwood plays host to private dinners featuring guest wine makers and sommeliers narrating their own curated pairings. If you enjoy dining by sunset consider iDeck, the outdoor dining experience complete with firepits, community tables and the best rooftop view on PGA Boulevard.

by playing on them. The marriage between baseball and golf has survived more than a century, getting its start long before the opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Just a year before the museum’s debut, the George Wright Golf Course opened in Boston. By then, Albert Spalding’s sporting goods firm had added golf equipment to its early baseball line. Other Hall of Famers who enjoyed the game, with varying success, were Ernie Banks, Johnny Bench, George Brett, Bobby Cox, Dizzy Dean, Dennis Eckersley, Joe DiMaggio, Rollie Fingers, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Tony Gwynn, Walter Johnson, Connie Mack, Mickey Mantle, Christy Mathewson, Willie Mays, John McGraw, Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Mike Schmidt, Ozzie Smith, Tris Speaker, and Dave Winfield, who was drafted by teams in three sports but still tried a fourth. Even Bill Klem, the most famous umpire of World War I vintage, found time to play. Golf was so popular with baseball people that the Chicago Cubs once hired 1916 U.S. Open winner Chick Evans as a spring training batting instructor. The team’s owner, Charles Weeghman, predicted that Evans would improve the batting performance of every player on his team. He didn’t but the idea was certainly a novelty other teams took seriously. Connie Mack, owner and manager of the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 years, also viewed golf as good exercise for his ballplayers. Rather than risk injury by asking his star pitchers to throw too early, he had them play golf – often 18 holes per day but sometimes 36. As a result, fu-

ture Hall of Famer Chief Bender picked up a reputation as the best golfer in the American League. According to Ryne Sandberg, now the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, “At the end of the day, the more work you put in, the harder you apply yourself, and the better concentration and focus you have, the better golfer or baseball player you will be. There’s no better feeling than hitting a 300-yard drive.” The long-time second baseman of the Chicago Cubs likes the Leatherstocking course. “It has the feel of an old-time course,” he says. “It goes with the feel of Cooperstown; it’s a little nostalgic.” Palmer once won the Hall of Fame Induction Weekend tournament by distracting his closest competitor, the newly-elected Fingers. “We were neck-and-neck going into the 13th or 14th hole,” Palmer recalled, “so I asked him what he was going to talk about in his speech. He hit the next one out of bounds.” Fans seeking pictures and autographs gather to watch the stars play from a distance but are prohibited from stepping foot on the links during the tournament. Among the Babe Ruth golf trophies on display in the Hall of Fame is a tiny piece given by the St. Albans Golf Club for a hole-in-one on April 11, 1940. “I used a No. 3 wood and that ball scooted for the hole like one of Carl Hubbell’s fast ones for the plate,” Ruth recalled. While Ruth enjoyed playing, Ty Cobb considered good golf a personal necessity – especially against the fun-loving Ruth. Cobb best Ruth in a bestof-three USO fundraiser in 1941 and cherished the victory. “I’m beginning
to take it more seriously than those 12 batting titles I won,” he said. Both Cobb and Ruth benefitted from blue laws that kept ballparks shuttered on Sundays – giving them more time on the links. Today’s ballplayer-golfers have tighter schedules. Rest assured, however, that they will be on the links of the Otsego Golf Club during the last full weekend of July. That’s when the elite of the baseball world show they can swing a mean golf club too. Founded in 1894, the Leatherstocking course has maintained a nine-hole format since 1907. The original course design is retained only in the first hole but none of the famous athletes complain. They’re all having too much fun. Every Ball Counts Continued from page 45 The best part is that EBC will develop a specific plan for you. Not just any golfer, but a plan that is 100% built for you and how to get you to shoot better scores. Every Ball Counts is a complete training system. It is not just a lesson. If you are serious about game improvement, you need a plan. That is what EBC provides. It is an individualized training plan based on each player’s skill sets. This training plan is what will get the player to reach their individual goals. In the end, the only thing in golf that really matters is your score. The industry is measuring in whole numbers. EBC is so precise, they are measuring in hundredths of a stroke. For an average handicap player come to EBC it is easy to see a reduction in whole numbers to their score. But when a tour player comes, reducing their scoring average by a whole number takes time. That’s where having the knowledge and expertise on where to take fractions of a stroke off of their scoring average means everything. A small fraction of a stroke on tour can mean an awful lot of money. My scoring average on The Web.com Tour this year was 69.94. If EBC can help me lower my scoring average even a fraction of a stroke, it could mean many thousands of dollars to me. EBC shows you what missing a 3 foot putt means as well as adding yards to your drive. It is MoneyBall for golf. The program incorporates the physical workout (which could be done at PGA National Resort), proper training to improve skills required to lower scores, instant feedback via the EBC strokes gained training app to track your progress, and most importantly, how this all applies to properly play the game and shoot lower scores. The program is based on science and data, not opinions, just hard facts. It quickly identifies where you need improvement and then a plan is developed for you to train. Based on all of personal evaluation the team comes up with a plan for you that includes the proper workout, the proper way to warm up and how they can better your mechanics. They know precisely where you need work and they give you a plan for success. All you have to do is follow it to improve. The training program is for all skill sets. Yes it appeals to the careeroriented player but the benefits are realized for every level of player. I regret not being aware of EBC as a junior or collegiate player but feel fortunate that going forward my training program will be targeted to my specific needs. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship to play college golf for Georgia Tech and to go on and play professional golf after graduating. If I started this program years ago, I feel that I would be so much better and just might be dominating right now on the PGA Tour. I feel that for the junior player who is looking to play college golf, this just might be the program to get he or she over the top to get that Division I scholarship or it might be to play for a better school than they are currently looking at. I believe that for the collegiate player who wants to play as a professional, this is the program that just might help then achieve that goal. One thing is for sure, you will get better! The programming allows players to constantly compare themselves to PGA Tour players. Most PGA Tour players including the top 3 players in the world are now using stat based training. It is proven effective. Whenever I come to The Every Ball Counts Program I also get to come to my very favorite golf resort, PGA National. This has always been my place to come to spoil myself and it holds so many of my greatest memories.

Every Ball Counts
I came here every year as a junior golfer since I was 10 years old to play in The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship. By playing in all of the age divisions growing up, I’ve been able to play all of the great courses at PGA National. If you haven’t had the chance to play all five courses, you are really missing something. Because they are all so good, I make sure that I never play the same course twice in a row. It’s very hard for me to pick a favorite of the five courses, but because of a few very memorable experiences, I’m kind of partial to The Champion Course. Last December I was fortunate enough to get through the PGA Tour’s Web.com Qualifying Tournament and earn Fully Exempt Status for this year. The final stage of 6 rounds was held on both The Fazio and Champion courses with my final round of that tournament being played on the Champion Course. Then earlier this year I won The Golf Channel’s Big Break Event. We were on all of the courses during the Big Break but the final day was an 18-hole head to head match on the Champion Course. The thing I remember most about both of those final rounds on the Champion Course is the last hole of each round. I had an eight foot birdie putt on the eighteenth hole of my final round of Q-School and I had an eight foot birdie putt on the seventeenth hole to close out my match to win The Big Break. I have never been more nervous in my life that I was on either of those. There absolutely was no feeling in my hands on either of those putts. So I’ve got some pretty incredible memories on that course. Having spent a week every year at PGA National growing up, then 10 days there in December for the Web.com Qualifying Tournament and 3 weeks for the taping of The Big Break, I’ve really gotten to know the resort. The best part about going to PGA National is that once you set foot on the property, you never have to leave until it’s time to go home. You have great food options no matter how long your stay is. The Ironwood Steak and Seafood Restaurant is second to none. If you are a steak lover like me, you will be hard pressed to find a better steak anywhere else. The pools, workout room and spa are as good as you can find. The hardest part is finding the time to take advantage of everything they have to offer. During one of my episodes of The Big Break, I won a segment that earned me an afternoon in the spa. I even had a pedicure. I never imagined myself having a pedicure but I’ll tell you it was incredibly relaxing. After a long day on the golf course and in the gym, there is no better feeling than being able to come back to the guest room. It is pure comfort. They’ve thought of every detail to make your stay incredible. So make sure your next stay is at PGA National and if you want to improve your golf game, make sure you include the Every Ball Counts Program in your stay. Your friends might not be glad that you did because they won’t be able to beat you anymore but you will sure be glad you did.

THE HONDA CLASSIC
Adam Scott, winner of the 2016 Honda Classic
Jason Myers Photography
A Record Win at The Honda Classic By CRAIG DOLCH If a golf course can be judged by the winner it produces, PGA National Resort & Spa’s The Champion course certainly lived up to its name in the 2016 Honda Classic. With record crowds watching, former Masters champion Adam Scott scored a oneshot victory over Sergio Garcia in the 10th Honda held at the world-class resort. Scott’s final round of even-par 70 left him at 9-under 271 after four trips around the daunting, Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Both Scott (No. 19) and Garcia (No. 18) started the week in the top 20 in the world rankings, and Scott moved into the top 10 afterward. It was the Aussie’s 12th career PGA Tour victory – his first since the 2014 Colonial – and no player on the PGA Tour under the age of 40 has won more. When his 2-foot par dropped, Scott let out a deep breath as the crowd around the 18th green roared its approval. “It was certainly a sense of relief to win again,” Scott said. “It’s getting tougher and tougher to win out here.” The Champion maintained its reputation for toughness. It marked the eighth time in 10

PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA
years the winning score at The Champion has been single-digits under par (the average winning score is 8.6-under par). “It wasn’t easy, but that’s to be expected,” Scott said. “This is a tough track.” Fourth-ranked Rickie Fowler started the week strongly, becoming the first player to finish the first 36 holes without a bogey. He settled for a sixth-place tie, giving Honda three players inside the top 20 atop its leader board. Scott appeared to be coasting to victory Saturday until the Bear Trap took another victim. Scott was 7-under through 14 holes and had a three-shot lead over Garcia – until Scott dumped two balls in the water at No. 15 and made a quadruple bogey. When Scott held on for the victory, he became the first player to do so on the PGA Tour with a quad on his card since Phil Mickelson in 2009. “I never dreamed that these holes were going to play so difficult coming down the stretch,” said Nicklaus, who re-designed The Champion course. “If you’re going to have a Bear Trap, you might as well have a nice trap.” Scott became the first player to win
after having to convert from the anchored putter to a shorter model, thanks to the USGA’s rule change Jan. 1. It took him just three starts do so. “Adam deserved it,” Garcia said. “He played better than me. I played with him the last two days, and he looked awesome.” So did The Champion Course. Before the first meaningful shot was struck, the players were raving about the conditions. “The course is looking really good,” Rory McIlroy said after his pro-am round. “It’s looking as good as it has ever looked.” That was quite a compliment to Brad Nelson, PGA National’s director of agronomy. The resort had been hit by 22 inches of rain during the previous six weeks – the average rainfall this time of year is 4 inches – but you would have never known it by the way it looked during tournament week. “We're proud of the way the course played,” Nelson said. Nelson and his staff set the stage on The Champion course, allowing the world’s best players to shine. In the end, Adam Scott was the brightest star.
