Local Scouts and adult volunteers contributed $4.7 million worth of community service in 2016. The Scout pictured above started a diaper drive when he was just 5 years old after learning that many people struggle to afford this basic necessity and has grown the drive every year.

piration STEM Ins We hosted the first-ever STEM Inspiration Day in 2016, during which 18 former NASA astronauts spoke to approximately 3,000 kids in schools throughout Chicagoland.

We sent 45 Scouts from at-risk neighborhoods in Chicago’s inner-city to the Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia for a week of adventure.

The presentations were aimed at exciting students about careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields while motivating them to achieve academic success.

Scouts have opportunities to build friendships around the corner and around the world. Local Scouting families hosted 63 international Scouts from Hong Kong, Ethiopia, and Mexico for a weekend of sailing and sightseeing in Chicago before they traveled to the Michigan International Camporee.

Explorer Post 49, also known as Vector Robotics, earned the right to compete in the International Marine Advanced Technology Education Competition in June at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The Explorers and the underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) they designed and built competed fervently against 38 teams representing 16 countries.

One day Rory saw his sister chocking and in distress so he quickly preformed the Heimlich maneuver, a skill he learned in Scouting, and successfully dislodged the food she was choking on.

There, Noah worked alongside scientists and engineers on board the ship Nautilus where he studied ocean mapping technologies and helped design, build, program, and track ocean drifters in the Eastern Pacific. Noah aspires to become a member of an R&D team that programs robots for applications with real-world impact.

organizing a winter clothing drive for the Pacific Garden Mission in the South Loop as part of the community service project required to become an Eagle Scout- the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. He is a senior at the De La Salle Institute in Chicago where he maintains a 4.8 GPA. Kyrie received a Chick Evans Scholarship to attend the college of his choice and is currently prospecting schools with exceptional engineering programs.

Outdoor Inspiration Award from Adidas Outdoor in recognition of her efforts to inspire other young people to engage in outdoor activities. She became a certified angling instructor in 2014 and has been sharing her fishing skills and love for the sport ever since. Lily is president of her Venturing crew based in Crete, IL and leads all Venturing Scouts in Chicagoland.

Congressional Award Gold Medal- the highest award Congress presents to youth. The Gold Award requires recipients to complete 400 hours of public service, 200 hours of personal development activities, and 200 hours of physical fitness activities, among other challenging tasks. Christian attends Brown University where he plays Division I water polo.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Our new Diversity and Inclusion Department will work with charter partners to start units in economically challenged neighborhoods in the south and west sides of Chicago and in Northwest Indiana to give all young people the opportunity to benefit from Scouting, regardless of their circumstances.

STEM Scouts helps girls and boys in 3rd through 12th grade learn about science, technology, engineering and math through creative, hands-on activities, field trips and interaction with STEM professionals.
