NORTHERN SUBURBS

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS The village of Arlington Heights is located 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. With a population of over 75,000, it gained notoriety as the highest populated incorporated village in the country. The community’s history dates back to 1835, when the General Land Initially known as Dunton after William Dunton, who convinced the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad to make a stop in the area in 1853, the town was established as an early Chicago commuter suburb. Arlington Heights was incorporated in 1887 with a population of 1,000, and today, its motto remains “City of Good Neighbors.” The average 2012 sales price of a home in Arlington Heights was $331,772 (source: Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC). Students in the community are primarily served by Arlington Heights School District 25. With its proximity to the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway and the Eisenhower Expressway, Arlington Heights provides convenient commuting options for residents. NORTHERN SUBURBS

LONG GROVE The village of Long Grove is located 35 miles northwest of Chicago in Lake County and encompasses almost 13 square miles. Settled in the early 1800s by German farmers, Long Grove was the thriving home to two general stores, two blacksmiths, two wagon and carriage shops, and a tavern which is still in operation today. The crossing of two Indian trails eventually became the site of present-day Long Grove. Many pre-Civil War buildings remain in Long Grove, including farmhouses, homes, and independently owned merchant stores. Plaques adorn each structure, giving acknowledgement to the original owners as well as recognizing their importance to the history of the village. Strict building ordinances protect the country feel and atmosphere of the community. The 2012 average sales price for a single-family home was $422,830, and $231,013 for a condominium. Long Grove students are served by two elementary schools, one middle school, four private schools, and the award-winning Stevenson High School. LINCOLNSHIRE Lincolnshire, located 34 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, is among the most desirable places to live and work in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is known for its excellent schools, abundant greenery and easy access to regional transportation. The Des Plaines River travels through Lincolnshire, providing a nice divide for businesses and residents. Residential areas are nestled among parks and forest preserves east of the river, while commercial areas convenient access to Interstate 294 and is 45 minutes from downtown Chicago by commuter train. The town is home to award-winning Adlai E. Stevenson High School, consistently rated as one of the top high schools in the country. VERNON HILLS Vernon Hills is situated on almost eight square miles in Northwest Lake County. The land that encompasses Vernon Hills was originally founded in 1851 for a 200-acre farm, and did not see further development until the 1950s when a portion of the land was purchased for a residential community and golf course. MUNDELEIN Located 34 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the village of

Mundelein in 1835, and the village was incorporated in 1865. Mundelein was originally called several different names, including named Mundelein in 1925 after Cardinal George Mundelein, who opened what remains the largest operating seminary in the United States, St. Mary of the Lake, in 1921. Students in the community are served by three public elementary school districts and Mundelein High School, as well as two Catholic grade schools and Carmel Catholic High School. The Metra railway stops in Mundelein, providing daily commuter train service to and from Chicago’s Union Station.

GRAYSLAKE Incorporated in 1895, the village of Grayslake was named after farmer William F. Gray, who settled along the lake that was eventually named Gray’s Lake. Today, Grays Lake remains the largest lake in the village. Located 40 miles north of downtown Chicago, the village’s population in 2010 was more than 20,000. Although historic buildings dot Grayslake’s downtown district, the village is burgeoning with new home developments. Planned residential communities welcoming residents looking for a blend of residential development, easy commuting to downtown Chicago, ample shopping and light commercial within a setting that retains its historic, rural ambiance. LAKE VILLA Located approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago, Lake Villa is a thriving community surrounded by lakes. The community was settled in the 19th century, when it served as a resort town. Lake Villa began to take shape in the 1880s thanks to E.J. Lehmann, who brought railroad service and a private resort to the area. Incorporated as a village in 1901, Lake Villa expanded after World War II, and today is home to more than 8,000 residents. Housing styles in Lake Villa include ranches, raised ranches, Colonials and traditional homes. WAUKEGAN is one of the oldest communities in Illinois. It was initially settled by the Potawatomi Native Americans who then sold the land in a treaty to the federal government in 1829.
