The Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce is once again setting the bar with new programming for their members. Beginning in January 2016, the Chamber will restructure their program and offer a Speaker Series, Summit Series, and a new concept the Chamber is referring to as FUSE – Igniting Discussions, Ideas, and Solutions. Most Chambers do basically the same programming – Mixers, for business networking, and Membership Luncheons, to listen to a speaker and hear about upcoming Chamber events. The Greater St. Charles County Chamber is looking for opportunities in which members can be engaged in the discussion and ways to better educate businesses on the issues that impact their business and our community and St. Louis region. To find out how your business can get involved, contact the Chamber at 636.946.0633.

Passing the Platter Some Holiday Treasures Travel in Cardboard Boxes

T

he turkey platter is nothing to brag about. It was my Aunt Laura’s, and was passed down to me by default. Mom had it, stacked inside a hard-to-reach cabinet space above her toaster; the cabinet where seldom used and often forgotten kitchen wares shared space. I don’t remember having seen it more than once or twice; maybe it was covered with turkey or maybe it was just too much trouble to haul out for a oncea-year feast for kids who would eat turkey off paper plates and never notice.

But when Mom grew older and began the ritual of parceling out her possessions, I was the logical choice for receiving the platter. I was the only daughter and knew I would be the keeper of all things kitchen. The platter was chipped on one corner and was only “vintage” in the “used” sense of the word. A crudely painted, garish turkey sprawled across the length of the plate and knife marks etched crazy patterns along its surface. I tossed it in a box with old cups and knick knacks that meant little to me other than that they meant something to Mom.

For the next thirty years, I’ve used that platter for Thanksgiving family dinners. Not because it held memories, necessarily, but because it was there, in my own hard-to-reach cabinet. Once the holidays were over it was shoved back into hiding and forgotten. by Robin Garrison Leach

Buy or Make Special Pieces that Showcase your Style...

I

Decorate

t’s time to Deck the Halls with Silver Bells and spread some Joy to the World with everyone who enters your home this holiday season. No matter or how tight the budget, you can transform your home into a Winter Wonderland with a bit of imagination, an eye for just the right color scheme and a desire to make this a Holly Jolly Christmas for your family and guests. Holiday decorating trends come and go; how you choose to accessorize your home will be determined by your memories of Christmases past, your family’s style and your personal comfort level. You don’t have to spend a lot of cash to create a festive atmosphere. You can go for new items or check resale and consignment shops for great options. Try these ideas and I guarantee you will Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Color Your Holiday World Red and green and silver and gold may be this season’s staple colors, but nothing says you can’t try a different color scheme that suits your home and your style. Rich burgundies, hunter greens, bolder gold and dark cranberry can add an air of sophistication. Focus on one color as

your Home For Holidays!

your main theme, or mix any or all to create a more subdued palette. Incorporate your colors with slipcovers for the dining chairs; fill glass bowls with ornaments in the shades you’ve chosen. Silk flowers used sparingly for a pop of color can enhance a side table or bathroom vanity without overpowering the smaller area. Consider ivory and grays to bring a soft feel into the mix; tie accent pillows with ribbons to complement your choices. New towels with seasonal trim or festive colors will give your bathroom a holiday touch.

Go Traditional Let the wonder of the holidays inspire you to create a traditional setting for your home décor. Your childhood memories of simpler Christmas decorations can be the starting point for a homemade holiday feel. Incorporate handed-down ornaments and holiday items to your living room in creative ways; string them onto garland along the mantel. They will bring back memories and encourage stories to share throughout the season. Bring fresh greenery indoors and drape along door frames. String cranberries and popcorn to wrap around the tree or around a mirror. Fill a bowl with pinecones, cinnamon sticks and tinsel for a natural, home-y look indoors. And don’t forget the candy canes!

24

Get the kids involved in the decorating; let the glue sticks and glitter fly. Or take them shopping with you at a local holiday store and help them choose that special item for a great memory. Consider using costume jewelry or other items from passed loved ones to decorate your tree and keep their memory alive in a touching, unique way. And don’t forget you Elf on the Shelf, Santa figures and Angels! One Word: WREATHS! The best way to make your home holiday-ready is with an awesome wreath. Or two or three. Your front door isn’t the only place that will look great with a wreath. There are as many sizes and designs of wreaths as your imagination and color scheme demands. Buy a bare wreath and decorate with your way; with ribbon, beads, candy or ornaments. Make one from scratch with a wire form and mesh. Spray a willow wreath white or bring branches inside and spray with snow. Add lights and you’re set. Add a wreath to unexpected places; atop a doorway, inside the coat closet (to surprise guests!) and, of course, above a mantle or piano or other focal point. Let the kids make tiny wreaths as gifts to send home with guests and family members. Provide supplies and let them go.

Twinkling Lights With all the varieties of holiday lights available, your home can glow with dazzling sparkle in every room. Don’t stop with the tree: holiday lights can border windows, fill jars and champagne flutes along the mantle, glow from baskets of greenery in the entryway and enhance the look of your dining area. Choose a color theme for each area or use clear lights for a cleaner look. Find unique ways to incorporate splashes of light that will surprise your guests and add a cheery look to your home without spending a lot of money. And while we’re talking lights, you may opt to use the softer touch of candlelight to give a more intimate feel to your home. Choose holiday colors and/or scented candles and arrange them in clusters or as a single focal point.

Music No home is fully decorated for the holidays without a cache of holiday music to be added to the mix. Play your favorite holiday songs in the background, and create a display of treasured sheet music and song books. Take a few moments to listen and discuss the memories the music brings to your family and friends. The joy of the holidays can be heard in each note.

had a day long promotion with us (Spirit Of St. Charles Riverboat), inviting listeners to spend a part of their 4th of July on the Riverboat for a Cruise. (Ironic isn't it). Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

hen I think of the '80s, I can't help but think of “Katy's '80s” rock segment! Katy Kruze has been in the rock scene here in the St. Louis area for just about 25 years. I sat down with the lovely Katy Kruze over lunch and chatted with her about about life and work. I also asked her some questions via email about her rock n roll connection to St. Louis.

Michael: Katy, how did you got started in broadcasting? Katy: I was very fortunate with regard to my start in broadcast. Although I knew since the 2nd Grade that radio was a passion, I had not pursued it as a career until I was "discovered" by some folks at Frishling Broadcasting while I was narrating guided tours on a Riverboat. A "Hits" station back in 1989 called Hot 97,

Katy: I'm an Air Force Brat, I was born in San Antonio Texas, and lived in New York, Germany, back to New York, Arizona, and back to Texas all before the 3rd Grade. When I was 11 my Father was transferred to Scott Air Force Base, and St. Louis/St. Peters, has been home every since. I have had such an amazing run in broadcast here, the friends, experiences, and memories I have been given by virtue of broadcast, are remarkable. It is a testimony to people that are here. I am sometimes in awe of how warmly I have been welcomed into their lives, homes, businesses! I hope they feel I have welcomed them equally!

Michael: What is your most memorable broadcasting experience in St. Louis? Katy: Hahahaha, this not a cop out, but there are truly so many! Meeting and interviewing the Rock Stars of course is always a thrill. To say that I am on a first name basis with people like Bret Michaels, Tommy Shaw, Paul Stanley or all my buddies in Night Ranger, is still so crazy to me, but there have been so many Charitable causes I've been able to contribute to along the way as well. There's nothing like really making a difference in someones life. Radio has allowed me so many of those opportunities!! Michael: Who was most instrumental in St. Louis in helping you build your career? Katy: I would be hard pressed to come up with a single "who,” as there were many "pivotal" people that were "instrumental" in my broadcast career. Huge Thanks go to those who gave me an opportunity! Steve Kaspar at 99.9 KFAV for my real "first shot" in the industry as a real live DJ. Joyce Pavia, who was

instrumental in getting me in the"KSHE front door.", Jim Owen for hiring me at KSHE, Al Hofer for taking me under his wing and teaching me so much, David Glover for the seat on his show for 10 years, and Rick Balis for always moving me up the KSHE management ranks. Michael: You're now doing MMA promotions and other events. Tell us more about that and what you have goin' on in your life. Katy: Even though it's the first time in 25 years I have not been heavily involved in radio, life remains a fast paced adventure. Any single mom reading this knows, that in itself keeps me busy enough, but outside of being mom to my son Jagger and daughter Gabrielle, I am the VP of Operations for Fight Hard MMA. We produce, promote, and present large scale, family friendly, 'Mixed

Martial Arts' events at The Family Arena in St. Charles several times a year. Just imagine putting on a party for 9000 people 6 or 7 times a year, that's my job, and I love it!! The world of MMA is exploding, and to be involved on this scale is really exciting. One of the coolest parts of the job is related to our "business model.” You see, we "gift" our tickets to the community. A ticket to a 'Fight Hard' event is FREE, with that, we are able to provide a night of entertainment for entire families, regardless of that families income or budget. Michael: Your views on radio today and where its heading? Katy: There is no doubt that radio has changed drastically over the past two decades, and no one with working ears will deny that corporate radio, with regards to a music format, has become more and more restricted with regards to

“Encore Promos” "tighter" play lists, jock banter, etc. Like everything else it has had to evolve with a changing society. Long gone are the days of the "relaxed listening" styles of the 70's or the all out "party atmosphere" of the 80's, and we as listeners, and lovers of radio, understand change, however, what I think people miss most about their music radio the most is the stripping away of uniqueness or personality to a large degree. The "Corporation" of radio, especially with regard to "rock radio formats" is an interesting dilemma. The more "pop" or "wide appeal" music bands like Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon, were churning out in the early to mid 80's gave them the title "Corporate Rock". A title they despised, but these bands were HOT, in a "turning tide" of radio, when corporate America saw that there was a real opportunity to make big money with the industry.
