Friends of Kids with Cancer Makes Magic For Families 365 Days at Year!
F
riends of Kids with Cancer not only makes MAGIC during the holiday season, but creates MAGIC for families with a child in treatment for cancer 365 days a year. Friends of Kids with Cancer is a local organization celebrating 23 years of enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases. Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids and provide them and their families with the Educational, Emotional, and Recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation. “Friends” offers a wide variety of programs that treat the “whole child…not only the cancer”. Our Educational Programs, (tutoring, testing and scholarships) encourage the kids to THINK positively about their academic future. Our Emotional Programs (Art & Play Therapy, Support Groups, and Counseling) provide creative outlets for the kids to FEEL confident expressing their inner feelings. Our Recreational Programs turn unhappy faces into SMILING faces through special gifts, outings and parties. Cancer is not limited to devastating the life of the patient; it wreaks havoc on the daily lives of the entire family. Friends of Kids with Cancer is committed to doing everything possible to keep the kids and their families upbeat and ready to face the daily challenges of fighting cancer. For so many, the holidays are filled with traditions, family and friends. Unfortunately, holiday traditions drastically change and often disappear for families with a child in treatment for cancer. This is the time of year to reflect on just what it means to give and the difference that giving makes not only in the lives of those we give to, but in our own lives. You can make a difference by changing your traditional ways of giving by adopting a family or purchasing extra gift cards. A donation to Friends of Kids with Cancer in honor of family and friends is the best gift of all...one that will touch the heart of a child not only during the holidays, but throughout the year. It’s easy shopping and the reason for the season! 8

TimeOff-the WHAT’S UP guide • ADOPT A FAMILY CAMPAIGN
T
he Kelly Hager Group and Gateway Creative are teaming up with Friends of Kids with Cancer to adopt more than 70 families this holiday season. The Hager Group has been doing this for several years and TimeOff-the What’s Up guide is excited to partner with them this year again. We hope you’ll join in this worthy effort. Many of these children have been fighting various types of cancer for a long time. Having a child going through cancer treatment affects a family’s ability to purchase presents for the holidays and also makes it difficult to even find time to go shopping. Decorating the tree and baking holiday cookies does not fit in their schedule. The excitement and anticipation of the holidays for a family with a child being treated for cancer is overshadowed by physical exhaustion, financial stress and the constant worry of not being able to make this holiday season special. THANK YOU NOTES FROM 2014 ADOPT A FAMILY Thank you very much for choosing our family as one of the Christmas adopt a family. Luke loves playing with his new toys – it really brightened his day. We are very thankful that you care so much about families fighting cancer. Thank you so much again for making our holidays happy and special. The pick-up party was also so fun for all! THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Our family was adopted for Christmas and my heart is so full of gratitude for everyone who helped in the process. At the pick-up we were able to meet one of the family members who bought our presents and she shared with me her story about losing her brother 3 years ago. This meant so much to us that they turned their immeasurable loss into a huge act of service. We have never had such an exciting Christmas morning opening presents! The gifts were “right-on” and all were loved by our whole family.
Adopt A Family! Adopt-a-Family gift pickup party
A festive party atmosphere with Santa, music and snacks is planned. Area businesses can donate or supply food, drinks or other items to help make this occasion even better. When you help adopt a family, you’ll experience pure joy and appreciation from the adopted families and children.
DROP OFF ITEMS TO 16091 Swingley Ridge Road, #220 Chesterfield, MO 63017 (Across the street from Chesterfield Post Office just off Olive/Clarkson Road in the McBride Building) For more information call: Kelly Hager Group- 636-778-1216 Gateway Creative- 314-422-2891 Or go to www.kellyhager.com Thanks for your support... Volunteers for Friends of Kids with Cancer make these special events possible From there, you will be able to sign up and choose which items you would like to contribute and even chose the family or person you’d like to adopt and purchase gifts for. Go to www.kellyhager.com This holiday season think about these families suffering physically and emotionally…and
DONATION DROP OFF Donations may be dropped off at the Kelly Hager Group office 9 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday until Friday, December 11th. Or drop off donations on Saturday morning December 12th from 8 to 10 am at Donius University Center Atrium at Maryville. Please make sure to have donation items in a bag or box with the family number and name labeled on the outside so they can be placed with the appropriate family. All items must be new. Gift wrapping is taken care of and wrappers are welcome! The families arrive between 2-4 pm to pick up their gifts.
GIVE THE GIFT OF GIVING BACK…ADOPT A FAMILY. You have the power of replacing the disappointed sad faces with twinkling eyes and excited smiles. Touch the heart of a child, adopt just one or two family members or the entire family. Unless someone like you cares a lot, nothing is going to get better. HOW TO ‘ADOPT A FAMILY’ When you get on the site, click on the link on top of page or on the green houses with the pink stocking on right of the page. 9
A mother of a child with cancer says... “Chesterfield has so many beautiful displays and holiday activities for children that not only my child in the hospital will miss, but his brothers and sisters also. Not being all together as a family just takes the fun out of it….but there’s always next year.”

Passing the Platter Some Holiday Treasures Travel in Cardboard Boxes
T
he turkey platter is nothing to brag about. It was my Aunt Laura’s, and was passed down to me by default. Mom had it, stacked inside a hard-to-reach cabinet space above her toaster; the cabinet where seldom used and often forgotten kitchen wares shared space. I don’t remember having seen it more than once or twice; maybe it was covered with turkey or maybe it was just too much trouble to haul out for a oncea-year feast for kids who would eat turkey off paper plates and never notice.
But when Mom grew older and began the ritual of parceling out her possessions, I was the logical choice for receiving the platter. I was the only daughter and knew I would be the keeper of all things kitchen. The platter was chipped on one corner and was only “vintage” in the “used” sense of the word. A crudely painted, garish turkey sprawled across the length of the plate and knife marks etched crazy patterns along its surface. I tossed it in a box with old cups and knick knacks that meant little to me other than that they meant something to Mom.
For the next thirty years, I’ve used that platter for Thanksgiving family dinners. Not because it held memories, necessarily, but because it was there, in my own hard-to-reach cabinet. Once the holidays were over it was shoved back into hiding and forgotten. by Robin Garrison Leach

WEST COUNTY
HOLIDAY by Robin Garrison Leach
guide
Alexandra Ballet presents The Nutcracker
T
he weather outside is frightful, but the holiday season gives us reasons to smile as we bundle up and bustle about. Whether through snow, sleet or just icy cold, we continue on with the business of life and the joy of celebrating this wonderful time of year. Without a doubt, West County is among the jolliest of areas for holiday events. Sharing time with our immediate and extended families is always more enjoyable when we can plan special outings and destinations to keep the merry in Christmastime. From shopping to music to twinkling light displays, West County and surrounding areas provide opportunities for seasonal fun nearly every day of November and December. In addition, we have the chance to support a myriad of charitable causes that will help brighten the holidays for families whose daily life is a struggle—especially this time of year. Let the beauty and meaning of your holiday season spread out into your hometown as you attend holiday events, donate your time and money to others and create wonderful family memories to enjoy forever. Decorate
t’s time to Deck the Halls with Silver Bells and spread some Joy to the World with everyone who enters your home this holiday season. No matter or how tight the budget, you can transform your home into a Winter Wonderland with a bit of imagination, an eye for just the right color scheme and a desire to make this a Holly Jolly Christmas for your family and guests. Holiday decorating trends come and go; how you choose to accessorize your home will be determined by your memories of Christmases past, your family’s style and your personal comfort level. You don’t have to spend a lot of cash to create a festive atmosphere. You can go for new items or check resale and consignment shops for great options. Try these ideas and I guarantee you will Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Color Your Holiday World Red and green and silver and gold may be this season’s staple colors, but nothing says you can’t try a different color scheme that suits your home and your style. Rich burgundies, hunter greens, bolder gold and dark cranberry can add an air of sophistication. Focus on one color as your main theme, or mix any or all to create a more subdued palette.

your Home For Holidays!
Incorporate your colors with slipcovers for the dining chairs; fill glass bowls with ornaments in the shades you’ve chosen. Silk flowers used sparingly for a pop of color can enhance a side table or bathroom vanity without overpowering the smaller area. Consider ivory and grays to bring a soft feel into the mix; tie accent pillows with ribbons to complement your choices. New towels with seasonal trim or festive colors will give your bathroom a holiday touch. Go Traditional Let the wonder of the holidays inspire you to create a traditional setting for your home décor. Your childhood memories of simpler Christmas decorations can be the starting point for a homemade holiday feel. Incorporate handed-down ornaments and holiday items to your living room in creative ways; string them onto garland along the mantel. They will bring back memories and encourage stories to share throughout the season. Bring fresh greenery indoors and drape along door frames. String cranberries and popcorn to wrap around the tree or around a mirror. Fill a bowl with pinecones, cinnamon sticks and tinsel for a natural, home-y look indoors. And don’t forget the candy canes! Get the kids involved in the decorating; let the glue sticks and glitter fly. Or take them shopping with you at a local holiday store and help them choose that special 34
item for a great memory. Consider using costume jewelry or other items from passed loved ones to decorate your tree and keep their memory alive in a touching, unique way. And don’t forget you Elf on the Shelf, Santa figures and Angels! One Word: WREATHS! The best way to make your home holiday-ready is with an awesome wreath. Or two or three. Your front door isn’t the only place that will look great with a wreath. There are as many sizes and designs of wreaths as your imagination and color scheme demands. Buy a bare wreath and decorate with your way; with ribbon, beads, candy or ornaments. Make one from scratch with a wire form and mesh. Spray a willow wreath white or bring branches inside and spray with snow. Add lights and you’re set. Add a wreath to unexpected places; atop a doorway, inside the coat closet (to surprise guests!) and, of course, above a mantle or piano or other focal point. Let the kids make tiny wreaths as gifts to send home with guests and family members. Provide supplies and let them go. Twinkling Lights With all the varieties of holiday lights available, your home can glow with dazzling sparkle in every room. Don’t stop with the tree: holiday lights can border windows, fill jars and champagne flutes along the mantle, glow from baskets of

greenery in the entryway and enhance the look of your dining area. Choose a color theme for each area or use clear lights for a cleaner look. Find unique ways to incorporate splashes of light that will surprise your guests and add a cheery look to your home without spending a lot of money. And while we’re talking lights, you may opt to use the softer touch of candlelight to give a more intimate feel to your home. Choose holiday colors and/or scented candles and arrange them in clusters or as a single focal point. Don’t forget your outdoor lighting. There are professional istallers like Rednose Lighting who can light your home up in style! Music No home is fully decorated for the holidays without a cache of holiday music to be

I was looking at my three boys the other day as they argued over the remote control. One of them yelled, “Hey, give me that, you little rat.” It made me think that if this is any indication of how they will conduct themselves in their future business dealings or marriages, my kids will never get jobs and probably not move out of our home until they are in their late 50′s. I also realized that, more than likely, the next time I am going to be alone with my wife

will probably be on my death bed when she says to the kids, “Just give us a few minutes. That’s all Dad has left.” However, even then I imagine either a ball bouncing off my heart monitor and hitting me in the head or my wife telling me she just realized she has to drive one of the kids to a friend’s house for a birthday party but she promises to see me in the next world. And that I should keep the place clean so when she gets there she doesn’t have to start cleaning up after me.

Holiday Wine Thoughts & Tips From Lukas Wine & Spirits Superstore... www.lukasliquorstl.com 636-227-4543
T
he holidays are fast approaching. Soon it will be time to take inventory of your wine needs for your expected and unexpected guests. The following is a general overview for your wine needs. Please ask a wine expert for more specific needs. Bubbles seems to fit perfectly with the Holidays. Bubbles makes a statement that you are celebrating the arrival of your guests. This is a great pallet cleanser and goes well with most hors d’oeuvres. Bubbles can be worked in with all budgets. A decent California sparkling Spanish Cava or an Italian Prosecco can all be bought for around $15. Stocking white wines for the Holidays should not be complicated. Chardonnay drinkers will drink a variety of white wines. Chardonnay is a white wine that some people just don't enjoy. It tends to be too oaky or woody. Good white wines when served with appetizers would be an Albarino, Gruner Veltliner or Fallanghia. These wines are perfect with cheeses, dipping sauces and dressings. Other good basic whites are Pinot Grigio or Viognier. Your selection of red wines should be done with two thoughts. Light red for sipping or appetizers. Heavier reds for a big meal. Pinot Noir or a Rhone Blend are great for your easy going reds. Blends are also popular because they require very little decanting. When selecting a wine for a heavy complicated meal be sure and decant these wines. California Syrahs are good choices. The hottest varietal right now is a California Grenache. For your turkey dinner we suggest a light Pinot Noir from Oregon or a slightly sweet Riesling. By Gary Bilder, owner of Lukas Wine & Spirits
INGREDIENTS • 4-6 Chicken Breasts Sauce: • Juice from 1 lemon • 1 cup chicken broth • 1 cup white wine (Chablis or Chardonney) • 6 tablespoons butter • 1- 14 oz can of artichoke hearts, drained, and cut into eights • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic For Flour Mixture: • 2 cups flour • 1 tablespoon salt • 2 teaspoons white pepper • 2 tablespoons granulated garlic DIRECTIONS: Pound Chicken Breasts between 2 sheets of waxed paper until thin. Dredge chicken breasts in flour mixture and shake off the excess. Heat 4 tablespoons of olive oil and 4 tablespoons butter in a heavy
skillet. Brown chicken breasts but be careful not to overcook them. As they are browned transfer them to the serving dishes and keep warm. To the skillet add the lemon juice, chicken broth, white wine, and granulated garlic, and scrape up the browned bits on the bottom of the pan-approximately 3 mins. Add the Artichokes and simmer the sauce for about 10 mins. If you need to thicken the sauce mix 1 tablespoons cornstarch with ? cup water. Add slowly to sauce and stir until thick. Remove pan from heat and add 2 tablespoons of the butter. Swirl to combine. Adjust seasoning to taste. You may need to add more lemon juice, chicken broth, or wine. Arrange chicken breast in the pan and pour the sauce over them all. Artfully arrange the artichoke pieces over and around the chicken breasts.
