2018 RIGHTS GUIDE

FROM A PUBLISHING COMPANY TO A PUBLISHING GROUP Autêntica Editora enters 2018 with over 1,400 titles in its catalog. Recognized for its work with the academic public and for its books in the fields of Human Sciences, the company became Autêntica Publishing Group in 2012. Part of our achievements and trajectory is presented below.

In addition to investing in the quality of its publications and in the commitment to its readers, Autêntica is established as a publisher allied to educators, researchers and other agents involved with education in its various aspects. Since 2008, with the launch of the children’s division coordinated by writer and publisher Sonia Junqueira, Autêntica came to publish

thoughtful books for children: playful, attractive and with appropriate language. The evidence of a careful selection of titles is the choice of children’s books by governmental educational departments from various Brazilian states. The National Program of School Library (PNBE) has chosen various Autêntica children’s books as well.

Gutenberg was created in 2003 as a label to cover books of general interest and fiction. Faithful to the Group’s perspective of launching innovative and quality books, and at the same time to meet the demands of its diverse public, Gutenberg extended its operations and currently has more than 200 titles in its catalog. They are books of fiction and of general

interest that are present in all major bookstores in the country and also in school libraries. Among Gutenberg’s main priorities are supporting national literature, with the commitment to launch new talents in different areas (phantasy, romance, dystopia, thriller, chick-lit), and investing in the young-adult and adult segment (from 16 years old onwards).

Responsible for the genre of comics and geek literature, Nemo proposes to bring together names of world-famous comic artists and contemporary Brazilian authors, valuing this precious artistic language. Among the comics that make up the catalog there are adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays and other classic texts such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne, and national titles such as The Fight Against Canudos and The Lord of Stories. The new acquisitions that have been standing out in the

catalog are the graphic novels, such as Jane Austen’s famous work Pride & Prejudice. Teachers see the inclusion of comics in schools as an advancement, and while being most commonly used in the Portuguese classes – especially in the teaching of figures of speech through comic strips –, these comics are adequate for various school subjects. They may be used, for example, to teach languages, for social awareness and popular education. There are no limits to the application of comics for didactic purposes.

PRESENTATION

WHAT WE PROPOSE Provocative books selected according to criteria such as eclecticism, diversity, text quality and theme. A literature that distances itself from dogmas, that stimulates and attracts by itself, following no rules or precepts. A literature that enchants and stirs emotions, that makes you laugh and cry, that makes you think, that “catches” the reader from the beginning, sticking with him long after the end of the story. A literature that moreover enables the reader to achieve the greatest gift: the pleasure of reading. This is our proposal. We do not intend to innovate: we believe that each book with those characteristics is an innovation on its own, because it gives life to a world that does not exist but is undoubtedly worth knowing.

For that matter we seek to offer books that can arouse the interest of children and teenagers in various themes including a wide spectrum of subjects. Books whose ethical principles are especially the creative and consistent dialogue with the world and the intellectual, emotional and sentimental enrichment, always permeated by human and civic values. Whether the book is a universal classic or a contemporary text is no concern: our books are meant to impress indelibly, to allow deep insights, to comfort and broaden the readers’ life, thus helping them to be who they really are. We want to offer works that seduce and impassion our readers through graphic and textual excellence – without ever losing sight of the imprescriptible rights of the reader:

The right to not read The right to skip pages The right to not finish a book The right to reread The right to read anything The right to bovarism, a textually transmitted disease The right to read anywhere The right to read a sentence here and there The right to read aloud The right to silence – as proposed by French author Daniel Pennac in his book Better than life (Coach House Press, 1994).

WHAT WE HOPE FOR

The creation of a pleasant relationship between our books and readers of all ages, based on intimacy and complicity, so that this can be extended to us, publishers, as we permanently count on the readers’ feedback, which certainly allows us to learn even more.

Theater books, a new reading experience One of the major concerns of parents is enabling their children to be protagonists in a world that is ever more demanding and in constant transformation. In this context, they know that the interest in reading from the earliest age is critical for their kids to have a safer trajectory in life. But how to stimulate the taste for this magical universe?

MAIN FEATURES OF SHOWBOOK THEATER BOOKS

The theater-books Pinocchio and The Little Prince were developed precisely to provide a new reading experience that mixes literature and theater. The practice in schools and numerous studies prove the effectiveness of the puppet theater as a literacy tool. By manipulating finger puppets and reading simple and entertaining dialogues, children become actors and can enter the scene by themselves or along with adults. This way, the reading experience becomes much more enjoyable, establishing forever the taste for books and an even greater bond with their parents!

• There are more than ten finger puppets and scene elements in each story, in sturdy material, easy to detach and with an internal pouch to store them;

FELIPE CASTILHO Felipe Castilho has always been around books – both as a reader and as a writer. At age 24 he released the first volume of the series The Folkloric Legacy. Many positive feedbacks came from readers and critics, what motivated him to I keep writing. Some people might think he is a normal person, but his friends in São Paulo, his hometown, know the truth: he hates people who stand on the left side of stairs and he can bend his thumb a lot more than you do.

THE FOLKLORIC LEGACY GOLD, FIRE & MEGABYTES (THE FOLKLORIC LEGACY #1)

SILVER, EARTH & FULL MOON (THE FOLKLORIC LEGACY #2)

Anderson Coelho, a 12 year-old boy, lives his life between the reality of school and an online RPG. His skills in the game draw the attention of a mysterious organization, which chooses him to command an amazing mission alongside a group of unconventional environmentalists. Their quest? He has to stop an evil billionaire from putting his hands on a giant serpent of fire with enough power to burn an entire country. Gold, Fire & Megabytes is the beginning of The Folkloric Legacy, a saga that brings the exotic Brazilian myths and folklore to the light of our era.

Anderson Coelho discovers the location of the legendary (and floating) magical island called Amnesty, and manages to get to it in order to join the great competition between secret organizations that happens periodically. However, it is full moon, and he will have to deal with the howling and anger problems that it brings and that he never suspected existed. 272 pages | ISBN:978-85-8235-077-5

Moving to a new city is always difficult; how to start over in a place where everyone already knows each other, where groups are already formed, where no one knows who you are? At first, Priscila does not like the idea, but she gradually realizes that she can use that to her advantage, getting a chance to be someone new.

Priscilla, now 16 years old, starts dealing with more serious issues of adolescence: the impending college entrance exam, and along with it all the fears of this phase, friendships that seem solid and are suddenly lost, and learning that dating needs constant care so that it is not worn down.

Priscila is now 19 years old and realizes that she needs to leave adolescence behind and take charge of the responsabilities of an adult life. But, just like the TV shows that we love, she will go through a series of plot twists and confusion, and will find out that past episodes affect the current ones.

After the traumatic end of their relationship, Rodrigo and Priscila go separate ways. THE BEGINING OF EVERYTHING

THE WORLD WITHIN

Bruna Vieira has a secret list of dreams she has never told anyone. Her story begins in a really small town you have probably never heard of. She was not that tall, not that thin, not that funny. They say she wanted to pack her bags and explore the world, but before that she will have to deal with her shyness and face the first days at her new school. Travelling with little birds and discovering the bridges that connect her life to her dreams, Bruna meets the delicate drawings of the award-winning illustrator Lu Cafaggi, giving us the story of a young girl who has learned how to love life and herself before going out into the world.

Knowing how to laugh at yourself is a characteristic that makes all the difference in our lives. I think that is the reason why everything goes wrong, all at once, in our teenage years. It happens so we can make a mistake, miss a step, choke, want to disappear and, on the next day, realize it wasn’t that bad; after all, everyone is trying, in different ways, to deal with the new things in life. Bruna figured that out in the very first party she went with her classmates, and she is going to need your help to understand that what other people say is never as important as what is happening within you.
