2015 SEASON OUTLOOK

FMU opens 2015 baseball season The Francis Marion University baseball team will open its 2015 season on Saturday (Jan. 31), when the Patriots play host to Lenoir-Rhyne University at 11 a.m., in the opening game of the tenth-annual Carolinas Hospital Baseball Classic. The two-day, four-team event will feature three games each day on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium in FMU’s Griffin Athletic Complex. Daily general admission for the tournament is $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID). Following FMU’s opening game, the College of Saint Rose will play Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m. After that, Francis Marion will face Saint Rose at 5 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne and Saint Rose will begin day two of the action with an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne and Pfeiffer at 2 p.m. FMU will conclude the event against Pfeiffer at 5 p.m. FMU’s 15th-year head coach Art Inabinet returns three position starters and two starting pitchers from last year’s 2822 squad that placed ninth in the PBC regular season. The Patriots have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six years. “I believe if we play defense and field .960 as a team, we’ll have a chance to win a lot of games,” said Inabinet. “Our pitching staff has a lot of velocity and depth. The key for us is playing well defensively, especially at second base, shortstop and center field.” Junior left-hander Daniel Barfield will get the opening day start for the Patriots, and senior righty Jordy Santak is the probable game-two starter. Opponents hit just .212 against Barfield in 2014, as he posted a 3-0 record and a 3.66 earned run average. Santak struck out a staff-best 55 batters, while registering a 5-5 record with a 4.92 ERA. The starting spot for the third game is a toss-up between junior right-hander and USC Sumter transfer Fernando Pinillos (4-2, 1.88 ERA last year), junior left-hander and Spartanburg Methodist College transfer Jimmy Lindberg (7-2, 3.11 ERA) and junior lefthander Matt Kelley (5-5, 4.78 ERA), who comes to Florence from Southern Union State Community College in Alabama. “Daniel, Jordy and Fernando all throw three pitches for strikes and are tremendous competitors,” Inabinet said. “Jordy’s off-speed pitches have really improved.”

Inabinet pointed to senior southpaw Cody Dix, who posted a 3-2 record (4.80 ERA) and fanned 38 batters last season, and junior right-hander Jeremiah Freeman (1-0, 3.52 ERA), also a USC Sumter product, as key relievers for his squad. Returning left fielder JD Crowe is expected to bolster the heart of Francis Marion’s batting order in 2015. Last season, Crowe hit .343 in nine games with 10 runs batted in. Inabinet said of Crowe, “JD is a good example-setter. He doesn’t swing at bad pitches. He has shown some pop this fall and this spring and has the ability to hit for power. His work ethic has paid off for him and has helped turn him into a very good hitter.” Crowe has twice been named a Coastal Plain League All-Star during summer ball, in 2012 with the Florence RedWolves and in 2014 with the Columbia Blowfish.

The position returnees also feature senior right-fielder Zac Lenns (.261, 39 RBIs, 9 SBs), senior catcher Nicholas McGee (.270, 12 doubles) and junior second baseman Cole Morris (.260, 11 SBs). “Zac is as solid as we’ve got defensively,” Inabinet added. “He has good arm strength, is a tremendous baserunner and he really knows our system. McGee has improved in the area of hitting the ball better to right field, making him a more effective pull hitter. We also like his throwing ability. Cole’s base-stealing ability will be crucial to our success this year.” Newcomers who may see opening day action include junior shortstop Randy Loew (Southern Union State Community 4

College), junior shortstop Zach Callahan (USC Lancaster), junior outfielder Cole Griesinger (Ball State University), sophomore outfielder Zach Paquette (The Citadel), junior third baseman Ryan Miller (Frederick Community College), junior infielder Zach Warner (Toccoa Falls College), junior infielder Joe Camp (Concord University) and junior outfielder Shuler Ward (College of Charleston). Other Patriot returnees from 2014 include sophomore outfielder Taylor Garczynski (.231), senior first baseman Conner Wessel (.300, 8 RBIs), and junior right-handed pitcher Ty Simpson (0-0, .450 ERA). Francis Marion has been tabbed to finish seventh in the Peach Belt Conference annual coaches’ preseason poll. FMU received votes in the NCBWA’s preseason Southeast Region poll. The Patriots will play a 49-game schedule, with 25 games being played on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium, where the Patriots are 42-21 since the opening of the facility in 2012. On Saturday (Feb. 21), FMU will open PBC play with a Homecoming game against Armstrong State University. Four teams appearing on the Patriots’ schedule are ranked in the preseason NCAA Division II national poll. The Peach Belt Conference Tournament will be held May 9-10 at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field in Columbus, Ga. In his 17 seasons as a four-year college coach, Inabinet owns a 553-322-2 record. Francis Marion begins its 44th year of intercollegiate baseball, and the Patriots have an all-time record of 1125-703-3 (.616 winning percentage). 2015 PBC Coaches’ Preseason Poll No. Team (1st-place votes) 1. In 2006, Inabinet directed the Patriots to a program-best 41-18 record, a No.6 national ranking, and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series. The Patriots were ranked as high as third in the national poll during the 2006 campaign and spent seven weeks in the Top 10. FMU placed second in the Peach Belt regular-season standings. Following the 2006 season, Inabinet was selected as the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company Coach of the Year for the South Atlantic Region.

"Coach of the Year" for the NJCAA Region X, as the Mounties posted a 31-22 record and won the region title. Inabinet earned both the B.S. degree in history and the M.A.T. degree in secondary education (social sciences) from Winthrop University. As an undergraduate student, he was a four-year letterman on the Eagle baseball team. Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant coach at Winthrop from 1989 to 1991. He also was the head baseball coach at The Catawba School for one year (1992). Inabinet is director of the annual FMU Baseball Camp held during the summer. He is married to the former Kimberly Reese, and the couple has one child, Reese.

In 2005, he led FMU to a 34-16-1 record, a No. 14 national ranking, and an NCAA post-season invitation. During the 2005 campaign, he captured his 200th career win, and FMU's 34 wins was one shy of the then team record. Ten of the 16 losses were to nationally ranked opponents. FMU's team ERA of 3.11 was the lowest for a Patriot staff since 1980 and ranked eighth in NCAA II. The Patriots placed third in the PBC standings. In 2004, Inabinet guided the Patriots to a 29-17 record and a fifthplace finish during the PBC regular season. FMU won 10 of its final 11 contests and spent six weeks in the Division II Top 30 poll, including one week at No. 7, the program's then highest ranking ever. The team's ERA of 3.47 led the PBC and ranked 11th nationally. In 2003, he directed FMU to a 30-20 mark, a No. 18 national ranking, and a third-place finish at the NCAA's South Atlantic Regional. Picked to finish eighth in the PBC preseason coaches' poll, the Patriots finished third in the PBC with an 18-10 mark, only one-half game away from winning the program's first-ever conference title. The 18 conference wins were a team record. Playing an extremely tough schedule in 2003, FMU was 10-10 against Top-30 opponents. In Inabinet's first two seasons at the helm of the Patriots, FMU posted records of 24-27 in 2001 and 26-27 in 2002. Prior to joining the FMU staff in 1999, he served as head coach at North Greenville College for six seasons, recording a 155-122 mark (84-54 as a 4-year institution). He guided the Mounties program from junior college status to a four-year program in 1996. After making that transition, North Greenville was 14-21 in 1996, 34-17 in 1997, and 36-16 in 1998, including a pair of second-place finishes in the Mid-South Conference his last two years. In 1995, Inabinet was named the Louisville Slugger 6

Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium

Opened in the spring of 2012, the R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex houses the new home for Patriot baseball -- the new Clifford S. Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. The street address for the complex (GPS) is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. The field is part of the $11.1 million west campus athletic complex that includes a lake, fieldhouse, softball stadium, and soccer stadium. One main ticket office -- on the east side -serves the entire complex. The baseball facility consists of 800 seats with capacity of 1,755, and includes concession area, restrooms, two VIP suites, and pressbox. The field dimensions are 330 feet down each line, 375 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to center center, with approximately the same foul territory as at old Cormell Field. Bullpens are located down each foul line, and the first phase of the fieldhouse is located adjacent to the bullpen down the right field line.

Old CLIFFORD S. CORMELL FIELD Named in honor of Florence businessman Clifford S. Cormell, Cormell Field was offically dedicated on March 5, 1974. Cormell was instrumental in helping establish Francis Marion University, and early on he served as cochairman of the Patriots Brigade (now known as the Swamp Fox Club). When opened, The ‘Cliff was one of only a handful of collegiate facilities with an astroturf infield. The astroturf was replaced by natual grass in the 1990’s. The dimensions of the field are 320 to right and left fields, 365 to the power alleys, and 400 to center field. Seating accomodates 400 spectators with standing room for up to 1,000. FMU lost that first game in 1974, 5-3 to the University of South Carolina before a standing room-only crowd. Francis Marion ended its run at this field with a 20770-1 mark in its final 278 home games. FMU beat Flagler College 2-1 on April 7, 2012, in the final contest before moving across the street to the new Comell Field at Sparrow Stadium in the Griffin Athletic Complex.

Francis Marion stuns Gamescocks 5-4 in stadium debut FLORENCE, SC -Twentieth-ranked Francis Marion University plated all its runs with two outs and the Patriots held on for a 5-4 win over ninth-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division I champion South Carolina, Wednesday evening (April 11) at the opening of the new Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. Francis Marion improves to 27-13 and avenges in a way an earlier christening loss against USC (24-10). The Gamecocks rallied for a 5-3 win on March 5, 1974, at the official dedication of the Patriots' former facility, "old" Cormell Field. Wednesday, FMU sophomore right-hander Jeffrey Stoner induced a sharp line-out to right field by USC pinch-hitter Sean Sullivan for the final out with the tying run on second base to send the capacity crowd of 1,755 into a frenzy. The victory was the 400th at FMU for Patriot head coach Art Inabinet, now in his 12th season as head coach. Junior first baseman Stephen Tarkenton was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, while sophomore third baseman Michael Wilson and junior right fielder Jarrod Reed both collected a pair of hits. Junior first baseman Christian Walker led South Carolina with a 3-for-4 night that included an RBI single and a mammoth 372-foot solo homer to left field. Francis Marion broke up the scoreless contest with three runs in the bottom of the third. After South Carolina starter Adam Westmoreland (2-1) retired the first two batters of the inning, Wilson singled to left center. Senior outfielder Tyler Boyd extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a bunt single to the left of the mound. Junior second baseman Tyler Hibbs plated the first run at the new stadium with an RBI single to center field. Senior center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie followed with a run-scoring single to left center, and he took second on the unsuccessful throw to third. After a pitching change by USC, Hibbs scored the third run on a wild pitch by Patrick Sullivan. Walker got one run back with his solo shot in the top of the fourth. An RBI single up the middle by catcher Dante Rosenberg drew South Carolina to within 3-2 in the fifth. However with the tying run at second base, FMU senior southpaw Matt Broderick (6-1) got the third out by covering first on a ball that eluded Tarkenton at first and was flagged down by Hibbs in the hole between first and second. Broderick limited the Gamecocks to two runs on four hits in five frames, while striking out three and walking one. Junior Patriot righty Don Sandifer then held the Gamecocks at bay with two scoreless and hitless innings. FMU added a pair of two-out runs in the seventh to go up 5-2. Wilson reached on a fielder's choice grounder, stole second, and moved to third after back-to-back walks to Hibbs and Sosnoskie. Tarkenton then poked an 0-1 pitch from Evan Beal up the middle to plate Wilson and Hibbs. Walker's run-scoring single in the top of the eighth cut the margin to 5-3, but Stoner stranded two runners by fanning Joey Pankake. In the ninth, pinch hitter Kyle Martin got the Gamecocks to within 5-4 with an RBI groundout, but Stoner got the final out to earn his second save of 2012.
