Tourists tossed on street after Jomtien hotel closed over property dispute Boonlua Chatree Guests at a Jomtien Beach hotel were evicted without notice after police aided the inn’s holding company in repossessing the property. Tourists were rousted from their rooms and the restaurant at the Euro Star Jomtien Beach Hotel June 21 after 30 men cut power, disabled security cameras and blocked the entrance with metal poles. No word was given if the

displaced foreigners would be given a refund. The incident stems from a property dispute between Euro Star Co. Lt. and KM16 Bangna Co., which loaned the hotel 170 million baht at 1.5 percent interest in 2015. The loan included an ownership transfer and repurchase agreement, which KM16 claims Euro Star breached. Euro Star attorney Sittichai Jaruraksa claims KM16 executives lied to the Legal

Execution Department in order to get law enforcement to support its debt collectors in seizing the hotel on Jomtien Soi 1 near Dongtan Beach. Sittichai said the company already has filed a complaint against KM16 with Pattaya police. He also filed a complaint with the Anti-Money Laundering Office, claiming KM16 is covertly controlled by foreign nationals, and to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

PEA readies Soi 6 electricity upgrade Jetsada Homklin The Provincial Electricity Authority briefed Soi 6 business owners about a planned upgrade to the formerly private street’s antiquated electrical grid. Puwadet Chutinantakul, the PEA’s deputy technical manager, met June 25 with members of the Soi Yodsak Community. Residents and business owners on the former Soi Yodsak listened to opinions and proposals to bring the electricity system up to national standards. The soi long has suffered from power cuts due to old hanging wires, and

Puwadet called on the business owners to remove awnings covering lines to prepare for the service and upgrade.

Immigration encourages smartness Chonburi Immigration is requesting visitors to dress appropriately for a visit to a government office. The sign has been placed outside the main entrance at the Jomtien headquarters. They are not turning away men with shorts. It’s a request rather than a new regulation. But people in swimwear or trunks or women showing a lot of body or legs - as ever - will be told to cover up.

Koh Larn business owners are calling on Pattaya to repair the Tien Beach bridge, which is close to collapsing. Locals at the third-mostpopular beach on the island said there have been no lights on the bridge for a decade, and now neglect has caused the very foundation of the four-meterhigh bridge over a shoreline of rocks to degrade. About half the 500-meter span has no railing, the steel posts and foundation are rusted and various parts and joints are missing. The bridge could collapse at any time, residents fear. Association President Tithipat Sirinattasrikul and Tourism Authority of Thailand deputy director for East Asia Santi Sawangcharoen said June 28 that Chinese travelers already are Thailand’s biggest democratic, with more than one in four foreign visitors coming from the mainland. HRH the Princess has received international recognition for her scientific accomplishments, resulting in her appointment to various United Nations posts, namely special advisor to the United Nations Environment Program and member of the Special HighLevel Council for the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction of the United Nations. As a result of her experience as a scientist, HRH the Princess became aware of the difficulties Thai researchers have in obtaining the necessary funding for their research and so, in 1987, she established the Chulabhorn

Research Institute to provide a new fund-raising agency for such research. This institute now acts as a focal point for the exchange of intellectual and other resources in Thailand, for the purpose of solving urgent problems confronting the country in areas of health, environment, and agriculture. As president of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, HRH the Princess currently directs many special research projects, including the AIDS program; a program on restoration and integrated development of the flood-affected areas in Southern Thailand; seawater irrigation for cultivation of economic marine species and preservation of the mangrove forests; a rabies eradication program, with a special project for accelerated immunization in five southern provinces in Thailand; the Light for Life Foundation for Epilepsy, Chulalongkorn Comprehensive Epilepsy Program; Tabtim Siam Secondary School in Surin province; and the ‘Voice of Dharma for the Public’ Radio Station in Udon Thani province. Through these programs HRH the Princess plays an auspicious role in improving the environment and living standards of the villagers in a number of Thai provinces. Thank you HRH Princess Chulabhorn for your lifetime of dedication. 2nd Pattaya police chief axed in June following Soi 6 underage raid Boonlua Chatree For the second time in less than a month, Pattaya’s police chief was suspended after Interior Ministry officials discovered an underage girl working in a Soi 6 bar. Pol. Col. Phongphan Wongmaneethet, who was appointed June 3 to replace Pol. Col. Prawit Chosang after he was suspended, was removed permanently from the position by Chonburi’s police commander June 24. The discovery took place in the Sriracha district of Chonburi province and resulted in the arrest of an additional four people, two of Thai nationality and two from China. One of the Thais arrested was Suban Mahachananonta, formerly an MP candidate for the Thai Liberal Party. The deputy national police chief, Pol. Gen. 50 years later, the moon is still great for business Alexandra Olson New York (AP) — Fifty years after humans first visited, businesses are still trying to make a buck off the moon. Hundreds of millions of people were riveted when Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Naturally, marketers jumped at the chance to sell products from cars and televisions, to cereal and a once-obscure powdered drink called Tang. They are at it again in 2019, as the 50th anniversary of the giant leap for mankind approaches. There’s the cosmically priced $34,600 limited edition Omega Speedmaster, a tribute to the watch that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon. And the more down-toEarth Budweiser Discovery Reserve, which revives a recipe from the 1960s and features 11 symbolic stars in the packaging. There’s the playful NASA Apollo 11 lunar lander set from Lego. And Nabisco’s indulgent purple Marshmallow Moon Oreo cookies. And who doesn’t need “one small step” t-shirts, Saturn V crew socks or an Apollo 11 travel tumbler?

But seriously, some brands take genuine pride at having been part of the first moon landing. Omega Speedmaster watches have been an icon of space travel since NASA chose them for its manned missions in 1965 after other watches failed tests. In 1970, the crew of the illfated Apollo 13 mission used a Speedmaster to time a 14-second engine burn to align themselves for re-entry to Earth. “It continues to be an important tool to have. You have to look only to the Apollo 13 mission,” said James Ragan, a retired NASA aerospace engineer who tested the watches in the 1960s. Omega’s gold Speedmaster is a version of the watches the company presented to astronauts at a gala dinner in 1969. A relatively more modest $9,650 stainless steel timepiece features a laser-engraved image of Aldrin descending from the lunar lander. Then, there are the antigravity Fisher Space Pens, developed specially for the Apollo missions. For luxury space enthusiasts, Fisher Space Pen Co.

This July 20, 1969 photo made available by NASA shows pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin in the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. For the 50th anniversary of the landing, Omega issued a limited edition Speedmaster watch, a tribute to the one that Aldrin wore to the moon. (Neil Armstrong/NASA via AP)

has a $700 limited edition pen with authenticated materials from the Apollo 11 space craft. Back in 1969, both Omega and Fisher Space Pen Co. were quick to promote their Apollo 11 connections with media and advertising campaigns, as were NASA contractors like Boeing and General Electric.

Stouffer’s made sure consumers knew it provided food for Apollo 11 astronauts once they were back on Earth, launching the ad campaign “Everybody who’s been to the moon is eating Stouffer’s.” Fifty years later, the Nestle-owned brand is celebrating with a media campaign to share some of the recipes from 1969. But brands with no direct Apollo connections were not about to sit out an event that nearly every U.S. household with a television watched. In 1969, Zippo released a lighter saluting the Apollo 11 mission and its astronauts. A half-century later, Zippo

has sold out of the 14,000 limited edition lighters released in tribute to the anniversary, priced at $100 each. Krispy Kreme, which says it served doughnuts to witnesses at the Apollo 11 launch, conjured up a new treat — filling its classic glazed doughnuts with cream — in honor of the anniversary. If many of the tributes have a vintage feel, it might be because public interest in space exploration has ebbed and flowed over the years, with no single event capturing the global euphoria of the first moon landing, and the Apollo program ending in 1972. “Since 1972, human space travel has been dead boring. We’ve gone around and around and around the Earth a whole bunch of times, and that is not interesting to people,” said David Meerman Scott, a marketing strategist and co-author of the book “Marketing the Moon,” which chronicles the public relations efforts that went into the Apollo 11 mission. Still, Scott said the 50th anniversary comes amid renewed interest, with NASA’s plans to send astronauts back to the moon by 2024 and to Mars in the 2030s. Indeed, Lego conceived its lunar lander as a grown-up display set, part of its Creator Expert series aimed at adults. For kids, born to parents who themselves who have never known a world without space travel, the

Danish toy company is releasing six new Lego City Mars exploration sets, designed in collaboration with NASA with futuristic rockets that would take humans to the red planet. “It’s about giving kids something aspirational, where they can see themselves, versus trying to project them into a historical moment,” said Michael McNally, senior director of brand relations at Lego. Budweiser, similarly, has declared its ambition to be the first beer on Mars, participating in barley-growing experiments on the International Space Station. Still, the Anheuser-Busch brand saw marketing potential in evoking the patriotism that the Apollo 11 mission stirred in Americans during politically polarized times. “Beer at its core is a very democratic drink. It brings people together,” said Ricardo Marques, vice president of marketing at Anheuser-Busch. “We like in particular to remind people of everything that is good and everything we shouldn’t forget.” After all, watching the first moon landing was a personal experience for hundreds of millions of people around the world. That was thanks to TV — a connection Samsung has seized for its media campaign promoting its QLED 8K TV, tied to CNN’s Apollo 11 documentary.

NBTC’s 5G auction brings in 20 billion baht in revenue The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has brought in 20 billion baht in revenue following the sale of three slots on the 700-megahertz 5G spectrum to three major mobile operators. Honest research? News of the latest earth-shattering breakthrough crossed my desk last week, complete with the promise that this new treatment will stave off Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and will help me live to be 120. Now, that makes me think about whether I actually want to live to be 120. Watching the natural progression of aging in myself, I have this feeling that 100 will be enough. I could do without the Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s though. The new pill is actually an old pill called Metformin which is used in the treatment of diabetes, and the first trials on metformin will be next year in the hope it may return what is considered to be very promising. If successful, it would mean that a person in their 70’s could have the same biological age as a healthy 50 year old. Projecting that further, it might mean that at 120 the person will be like a spritely 100 year old? Professor Gordon Lithgow of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California, who will lead the study, said, “If you target an aging process and you slow down aging then you slow down all the diseases and pathology of ageing as well. I have been doing research into aging for 25 years and the idea that we would be talking about clinical trial in humans for an anti-aging drug would have been thought inconceivable. But there is every reason to believe it’s possible. The future is taking the biology that we’ve developed and applying it to humans.”

According to the research people, they have already conducted tests on animals which show it significantly extends their lives. Belgian researchers tested metformin on a species of roundworm and found that they not only aged more slowly, but also stayed healthier for longer. Now that may be so, but also stretches research into incredulity. Animal experiments are generally done on species that have something in common with humans, hence beagles, laboratory rats and mice and the odd chimpanzee. But roundworms? Come on! However, the Food and Drug Administration, the American regulator, has given the go-ahead for the same trials in humans, so if you find someone crawling along on their belly on your lawn, you’ve just spotted a 120 year old volunteer. Scientists believe that metformin could hold the key to anti-aging because it boosts the number of oxygen molecules released into a cell. This appears to boost their strength and ability to survive for a longer period of time. The trial, known as Targeting Aging With Metformin, or TAME, is due to begin in the US next winter. Scientists from various universities and organizations are raising funds and attempting to recruit 3,000 adults aged 70 to 80 who have or are at risk of cancer, heart disease or dementia.

This is where the whole thing becomes more than somewhat silly. Everyone aged 70-80 is more at risk of cancer, heart disease or dementia than anyone younger. This easily proved. And here is more evidence that academia can fiddle the figures when required. Cardiff University uncovered anecdotal evidence that patients given metformin for diabetes lived longer. Oh yes? This was despite the fact that those with the illness tend to have shorter life expectancies because they are more prone to heart attacks, strokes and kidney damage. University researchers with “anecdotal evidence.” May I remind them that “evidence” requires hard facts, not anecdotes! And remind myself to steer clear of Welsh universities. Never forget that what keeps scientific research going is “money”. When you have a research laboratory, you need money to keep it going. And the best way to raise money is to promise breakthroughs, especially cancer and antiaging. Nobody wants cancer and nobody wants to die. As I write this, there are people scouring the globe looking for a “cure” for their cancer, and for many, there isn’t one, but they are prepared to clutch at straws. Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t I? (No I wouldn’t.) So should all the diabetics I know start celebrating while waiting for their expected century? No, is the answer, and that statement was all done without fancy titled “research” trials.

New drug to boost women’s sex drive approved in US Matthew Perrone Washington (AP) — U.S. women will soon have another drug option designed to boost low sex drive: a shot they can give themselves in the thigh or abdomen that raises sexual interest for several hours. The medication OK’d by the Food and Drug Administration is only the second approved to increase sexual desire in a women, a market drugmakers have been trying to cultivate since the blockbuster success of Viagra for men in the late 1990s. The other drug is a daily pill. The upside of the new drug “is that you only use it when you need it,” said Dr. Julia Johnson, a reproductive specialist at UMass Memorial Medical Center who was not involved in its development. “The downside is that it’s a shot — and some people are very squeamish.” The drug’s developer, Amag Pharmaceuticals, could also face some of the same hurdles that have plagued the lone pill previously approved for the condition, including unpleasant side effects and limited insurance coverage. The company declined to release price information. The FDA approved the new drug, Vyleesi (pronounced vie-LEE’-see), for premenopausal women with a disorder defined by a persistent lack of interest in sex, causing stress. The most common side effect in company studies was nausea. The approval was based on women’s responses to questionnaires that showed increases in sexual desire and decreases in stress related to

sex. The women didn’t report having more sex, the original goal for the drug. “Women are not desiring more sex. They want better sex,” said Dr. Julie Krop, Amag’s chief medical officer. Flushing, injection site reactions and headache are other common side effects. Women with high blood pressure or heart disease should not take the drug because increases in blood pressure were observed after injections, the FDA said. It also could interfere with oral naltrexone, a drug for people with alcohol and opioid dependence, the FDA said. Because so many factors affect sexual desire, doctors must rule out other causes before diagnosing the condition, including relationship issues, medical problems and

mood disorders. The condition, known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, is not universally accepted, and some psychologists argue that low sex drive should not be considered a medical problem. Still, the pharmaceutical industry has long pointed to surveys — some funded by drugmakers — suggesting that it is the most common female sexual disorder in the nation, affecting roughly 1 in 10 women. Amag estimates

nearly 6 million U.S. women meet the criteria for the drug. Cynthia Pearson, executive director of the National Women’s Health Network, urged women to avoid using the drug “until more is known about its safety and effectiveness.” She noted in a statement that Amag had not yet published full clinical trial results. The search for a pill to treat women’s sexual difficulties was once a top priority for many of the world’s biggest drugmakers, including Pfizer, Bayer and Procter & Gamble. Those companies and others studied and later abandoned drugs acting on blood flow, testosterone and other targets. Vyleesi acts on receptors for a brain-stimulating hormone called melanocortin, which is associated with sexual arousal and appetite in both men and women. Waltham, Massachusettsbased Amag plans to pitch the drug to consumers through social media, including a website called unblush.com that tells women that low sex drive “is nothing to blush about.” Amag’s campaign has some of the hallmarks that helped launch the first female libido drug, Addyi, a once-a-day pill approved in 2015. The FDA decision followed a contentious fouryear review that included a

lobbying effort funded by Addyi’s maker, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, which framed the lack of female sex drugs as a women’s rights issue. Women taking Addyi showed a slight uptick in “sexually satisfying events” per month and improved scores on psychiatric questionnaires. Those results were only slightly better than what women taking a placebo reported, but they were significant enough to meet FDA effectiveness standards. The pink pill — originally developed as an antidepressant — was ultimately approved with a bold warning that it should not be combined with alcohol, due to risks of fainting and dangerously

low blood pressure. Most insurers refused to cover the drug, citing lackluster effectiveness, and many women balked at the $800-per-month price. Last year, Sprout slashed the price to $400. It was prescribed just 6,000 times last year, according to investment analyst data. UMass’s Johnson said drugs should not be the first choice for treating women’s sexual problems. Instead, she recommends counseling to help women “separate all the stresses of life” from their sex life. “But if that doesn’t work, having a medication that may help is worth trying,” she said.

Crossword No 1353 Monorail or Tram The latest on the saga of improving Pattaya’s public transport is that a raised-level monorail is out of favour with planners. Too expensive. A more sensible solution is apparently to link all areas of downtown Pattaya with a comprehensive tram service. Everyone will agree with that idea - provided planners come up with a solution to traffic chaos and gridlock on our overused roads. Ban all coaches within the city limits?

Plastic Health The latest street scam is to invite you to buy a small plastic card which you place carefully on your body nearest to a painful area and, hey-ho, you feel better in no time. Can cure anything from headaches and in-growing toenails to prostate cancer and high blood pressure. Maybe. Do you remember those expensive metals pointers which could detect roadside bombs to assist the army patrols? They didn’t work either.

Cars and Motorbikes If you are a foreigner buying or selling a vehicle, you will need a certificate of residence from immigration. To obtain this you will need a copy of your passport and valid visa, proof of your current address and - newish regulation - the log book of the vehicle in question plus photocopy. Don’t forget too you will need two passport-size photos as part of your package. Most immigration offices nowadays will issue certificates of residence in Thai only. If you need a translation for some reason, you will need to arrange by yourself.

Drugs and You Possessing drugs in Thailand is always bad news. Marijuana was banned in 1979 under a narcotics law and even smoking a ganja cigarette can lead to arrest. In 2019, the law was very narrowly amended to permit legal use only for specified medical purposes. Don’t believe anyone who tells you marijuana is now legal here. It most certainly is not. About 70 percent of all people who are in jail today in Thailand have been found guilty of drugs crimes, or are awaiting their trial locked up as they can’t afford bail.

Sending Currency If you are sending cash from abroad to your Thai bank here, you need to peruse carefully the applicable rates of exchange. In most cases, it will be cheaper to send the pounds or euros or whatever to Thailand to be converted to baht here rather than in the transmitting country. But a growing number of foreigners have in Thailand an account in their home currency which you can then convert when convenient to you. Check it out.

Keeping Abreast Overheard in a pub. A local transvestite is appealing for urgent funds to have a second breast implant operation. She told wannabe donors that she had already had one operation but this had proved to be very inadequate. When asked what was wrong, she said she had run out of money after the surgeon had performed the procedure on just one breast, thus leaving her very lopsided. Please help.

Trink Remembered A reader asks when Bernard Trink stopped writing his column for the Bangkok Post. That would be December 2003, although he still writes book reviews for the same newspaper most weekends. His column Nite Owl was for decades the must-read page for those interested in night life in Bangkok and, to a less extent, Pattaya. A New Yorker born in 1931, Bernard is one of the last literary links to a Thailand which elderly farang remember with affection.

At last City Hall is beginning to tackle the problem of illegal dumpers unloading lorry-loads of trash on the still-green areas of Jomtien, thus disfiguring what remains of our verdant pastures. They tend to operate at night for obvious reasons, but there have recently been several successful prosecutions. If you live in or near vulnerable areas, you can report the crimes by phoning the local authority helpline 1337, 24 hours.

Overdue Solution

Attention all those who are disappointed with their personal attributes. You would hardly think that a national campaign would be needed to advise male Thais and farang not to inject their private parts with a black ooze, nor to place them in a boiling pot, nor to cover them with a lumpy cream. But a group of doctors say the warning is necessary because so many men are disfiguring their nether regions with DIY treatments. Now you know.

How to get “true” colors!

Are you aware of the fact that everyone sees color in a different hue? When you were a toddler, your mother would have pointed out a colored item and said “blue”. From then on, you knew that whatever hue of that shade was called “blue”. There is no true blue! What you have to remember is that your vision gives you the colors on any item made up of pigment and reflections. To get “true” colors you have to remove reflection, and we have a natty filter to do just that. It’s called a Polarizer.

I have written about polarizing filters before and they are different from most other filters in the fact that they are made up of not one element, but two distinct elements. There is an outer ring that rotates the outer “glass” relative to the inner element. This increases or reduces the degree of polarization to allow the photographer an endless range of polarized effects from one filter. What you have to understand now is that these filters remove reflections from any surface. If you cannot see through some normally transparent windows, it is because of reflected images on the surface of the glass. The reason some tree leaves appear to lose their color is through reflected light from the sky above. One of the traps for young photographers is that because you know the grass is green, you see it as green

Dear Hillary, There’s a lot of blokes who write to you all worried about money that their GFs ask them for. What’s wrong with these blokes? If you don’t want to give them money, then don’t do it. If they leave then you know what it was they wanted above everything else, so why fret? Good riddance for bad rubbish I say. Harry Dear Harry, You are a very romantic soul, aren’t you! You are not describing a girlfriend, you are describing a maid. Big difference. Maids will go to the highest bidder. Girlfriends are someone who contributes something to the relationship. You have got the two confused, Petal. Stick with your maid until a woman comes along who sets your heart on fire. Dear Hillary, You have often mentioned “sideline” girls as if they are some sort of different species, so there’s bar girls, sideline girls and “good” girls. Correct? You will have to help me here, Hillary. How do I find the different ones? Or is there any real differences? There’s a big responsibility on you here, Hillary. Lots of men in Pattaya will be directing their future direction in life depending on your answer. Joe Dear Joe, You men certainly make things difficult for yourselves, don’t you, my Petal. Why is it so important that you put your latest girlfriend into one of these three categories? Looks to me like finding witches in the middle ages. Dunk the poor woman in water and if she doesn’t drown then

when you look through the camera viewfinder – even though it is not truly well saturated green. Look again at the scene in your viewfinder. The green grass is really a mixture of green and silvery reflections, dark shadows and pale green shoots. Put the polarizing filter on the lens and slowly rotate the outer ring. Suddenly the silvery reflections disappear and the leaves become a deep, solid green color. The grass

is now made up of green, dark green and pale green. This green will really leap out at you and smack you fair between the eyes! Your next beach scene when taken with a polarizer will really amaze you. Again, slowly rotate the outer ring on the polarizer. Look critically through the viewfinder and you will see the sky take on a much deeper shade or color to highlight the white clouds. Keep turning that

she’s a witch. If she does drown, it shows that she wasn’t a witch after all. But fat lot of good that did for the non-witch who was dead by then! However, to make it easier for you, here is the guaranteed Hillary’s Guide to Thai Girls. This guide should be understood before going into the next category up. Starting at the lower end – Bar Girls. Apply the British Standard Duck test here – if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it most probably is a duck. A bar girl will go to bed with you after you pay the bar fine (Mamasan will advise here). She will also want a plate of noodles that night and then scarper with the first chink of light (after the agreed fee for services rendered). Her main job is to work in the bar and get you to buy them copious drinks. The sideliners are a little different. Their day job is to work in the shop and afterwards get you to take them to an expensive dinner in lieu of a bar fine. They will expect the equivalent of the bar girl’s fee in the morning for servicing and they too will scarper, as they have to get to the office/shop in the morning. Now the “good girls”. Petal, you and your mates outside the 7-ELEVEn don’t need to worry about this category, unless your surname is “Na something” and you went to the best schools and your parents know her parents. Graduating from the 7-ELEVEn academy is not quite select enough, sorry. So there you are, Petals. There’s only two categories available to you. Both of them will be economical with the truth and both will cost you money! Helpful hint – you can pick up and put down a bar girl at will. The sideliners tend to be more “clingy”. As we say here, “Up to you, Teerak.” Dear Hillary, I came to Thailand for a two week holiday and met a young girl, as you do. We got along well, so I paid for her company

outer ring and the sea will change to a deep blue to green luminescent hue. Try taking the multi-hued shop houses that abound these days. The colors will all be stronger. The end result is at your command. Try taking the same shot this weekend, but with varying degrees of polarization and see the differences in the final shots. So, if the polarizer is such a wonderful bit of gear, why do we not make it a standard piece of equipment on all cameras? Well, like everything, there is a downside as well as the upside. In the case of the polarizer it does its bit of brilliance at the expense of the amount of light that gets through to the lens. With most polarizing filters you will lose about one and a half stops of light. What this means is that the shutter speed will be at least twice as long to record the

same scene, or that the aperture will have to be twice the size. This means that you are more likely to get camera shake effects and suffer from lack of depth of field when using the polarizer. However, with shots in the bright sun, a commodity that is everywhere in Thailand, polarizers will bring a new dimension to your shots. By the way, when using any filter on your camera, I suggest you use a stepping ring to increase the diameter of the filter, so there are no unwanted vignetting effects (darken the corners), especially with wide angle settings. My regular camera has a 55 mm diameter lens, which I have then stepped up to 62 mm so it takes all my old filters. This is really a good idea and also cuts down the number of lens adapters you will need. Including the polarizer itself.

up till the day before I left. That was when she started ringing me up and asking to see me, saying she was in love with me. Even if she couldn’t be with me for my last night she wanted to come and see me before the taxi picked me up. I felt bad about this but all my mates told me to forget about her, but I kept on answering her calls, but the mates stopped me from giving in, but I still felt bad about it all. What do you think I should have done? Mike Dear Mike, You forgot where you met this young lady who fell madly in love with you after 10 days. You paid for her company, my Petal. It was a business arrangement, not a matrimonial contract. By making you feel indebted to her, she was much more likely to extract even more money from you, which is why she wanted the face to face meeting, even on that last morning, you never know what you can get, even if it is just what is left in your wallet. You don’t say how old you are, but you are obviously a babe compared to the lady from the bar. What should you have done? Just what you did do, and that was to cut the relationship once the period of hire was completed. It was a short-time holiday romance, and a paid one at that. Next time you come over, you will hopefully be more mature, more wise and keep a tight hold on your wallet.

Bangkok (AP) - An activist who opposes the military’s role in politics was assaulted last Friday and left unconscious in the second attack against him this month, as violence against pro-democracy advocates becomes more aggressive. Sirawith Seritiwat was attacked before noon by four men who used baseball bats to hit him in the head and left him unconscious on a sidewalk near his home in Bangkok. The attackers rode motorcycles without license plates and wore helmets as they attacked Sirawith, according to a lawyers’ group and the activist’s mother. Friday’s attack left Sirawith with a fractured eye socket and head injuries that would require at least eight stitches and an overnight hospital stay, Sirawith’s mother Patnaree Chankij said. Sirawith, widely known as Ja New, was previously attacked at night on June 3 by at least five men after he had been working on a campaign to petition members of the junta-appointed Senate not to vote for Gen. Prayuth to become prime minister.

Patnaree told reporters that her son had called her Thursday night to tell her that he had been warned of another imminent attack. “We are more than just fearful now,” Patnaree said by phone from the hospital. “When I arrived at the hospital, he was already in a hospital gown but I saw that his shirt that they took off him was covered with blood,” she said. Other pro-democracy activists have faced similar attacks by unidentified assailants who have never

been investigated or arrested. ActivistAnurak Jeantawanich said he was attacked in May by a group of around 6-8 men, some wearing motorcycle helmets and using metal bars to hit his head, after he announced a plan to protest the election of the pro-army speaker of the lower house of Parliament. Other activists such as Ekachai Hongkangkwan have faced physical abuse by unidentified attackers on several occasions in addition to having his parked car set on fire twice.

A sense of place

Jean Sibelius in the late 1880s.

Perhaps you might have come across that fascinating computer game called Geoguessr. When you log into it, a photo of some random place in the world appears on the screen and you have to search for various clues to guess exactly where you are. It’s based on Google Street View and so you can move around or even travel a considerable distance until you find enough clues to establish your whereabouts. It is hopelessly addictive.

Anyway, the other day I logged in and found myself in a grim and joyless landscape, on a single-track narrow road with snow everywhere, gaunt-looking trees for miles around and an ominous sense of Poe-like bleakness. There was a compelling need to follow the road, which of course is the object of the exercise. There was not a vehicle in sight, not even a house or other sign of life. I clicked my way along the dismal track until I

could bear no more but then suddenly reached a main highway where I found a sign giving the name of what eventually turned out to be a small and inconsequential town in northern Finland. The countryside brought to mind some of the dark, brooding music of Sibelius who of course was Finnish and would have probably felt perfectly at home in this haunting, monochrome place. Sibelius had a musical style that is almost instantly recognizable and so often his music seems to conjure up a vivid sense of place; images of lakes and forests that are so typical of the Finnish landscape. In Britain he is probably best known for the opening movement of his suite Pelléas et Mélisande which was used as the theme of the world’s longest-running TV programme, the BBC’s The Sky at Night. It was first broadcast in 1957 and it’s still going. Born in 1865 as Johan Julius Christian Sibelius, he was the most important and influential composer that Finland has produced and he began using the French form of his name, “Jean” during his student years. In his seven symphonies, he developed a style of composing

in which tiny phrases continuously evolve into a fully grown melody. It’s like seeing – or rather hearing – organic cells gradually merging together and becoming transformed into a complete living being. I have a feeling that Charles Darwin would probably have appreciated it.

Jean Sibelius (18651957): The Swan of Tuonela. Norwegian Radio Orchestra cond. Avi Ostrowsky (Duration: 09:14; Video 480p) This is one of the composer’s more introvert pieces; music which transports you into a secret and mysterious world of brooding shadowy landscapes. The piece is virtually a solo for cor anglais (a kind of alto oboe) and this exceptional performance is conducted by the Israeli conductor, Avi Ostrowsky and features the evocative cor anglais playing of Ingrid Uddu. Composed in 1895 when Sibelius was thirty, this short tone poem is part of the composer’s

Lemminkäinen Suite which is based on a story from the nineteenth century Kalevala, one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The piece is scored for a comparatively small orchestra and the music paints an unworldly image of a mystical swan floating on the dark, gloomy river around Tuonela, the mythical Finnish island of the dead. The music really seems to transport you there.

Aaron Copland (1900-1990): Appalachian Spring, Suite. Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, cond. Seikyo Kim (Duration: 26:41; Video 720p HD) Copland also had that extraordinary ability to take the listener to somewhere else. Often, his music sounds “American” and gives you a sense of spacious prairies and summer skies. Even during the first few moments of the music you get a distinct sense of place. This work was commissioned by the ballet dancer and choreographer Martha Graham and first performed in 1944. The ballet

tells the story of a spring celebration of nineteenth century American pioneers after having built their new farmhouse in Pennsylvania. The work is full of traditional American themes, including the Shaker song Simple Gifts, which Copland borrowed and wove into the music. You might recognise this tune as the popular hymn Lord of the Dance. These movements are fine examples of orchestration at its best. Interestingly, when Copland wrote the music, he had no title in mind and simply referred to it as the “Ballet for Martha” but before the first performance, she suggested an evocative phrase from a poem by Harold Hart Crane. The phrase as you might have guessed was “Appalachian Spring”. Although the poem is about a journey to meet springtime, the word “spring” in the title refers to a source of water, not to the season. And strangely enough, having listened to this so very American music, I feel a compelling urge to go back to the computer screen and that same deserted country lane in Northern Finland to continue my search for human life.

Barron’s ‘Black Mountain’ stars his ex-mob enforcer Bruce Desilva Like a lyricist, Laird Barron excels at manipulating the tones and cadence of language. Like a Gothic novelist, the mood he creates is often bleak. “You don’t teach a child to become a killer by rote lectures,” he writes. “To create a predatory machine, you foster an appreciation of the natural world and our minuteness upon its canvass... We are as nothing and that permits us to do anything.” It comes as no surprise, then, that Barron wrote both poetry and horror before turning to crime fiction with 2018’s “Blood Standard,” a novel that introduced former mob enforcer Isaiah Coleridge. At the start of that violent book, Coleridge appeared to be a predatory machine; but, by its conclusion, he vowed that from then on he would kill only those who have it coming. Barron’s new novel, “Black Mountain,” finds Coleridge working as a private investigator in the Catskills mountains of upstate New York. There, the local mob boss hires him to

find out who brutally killed two organized crime strong arms_and why. As Coleridge digs into the case, he learns that many other victims, mostly derelicts and prostitutes, have been murdered in a similar fashion. Soon, his suspicions focus on another retired hitman, a mysterious psychopath known as the Croatoan, the name of a Native American tribe to which he may or may not be related. But the case proves to be far from straightforward. The Croatoan would be an old man now. Is he even still alive? Could he be killing with the help of an assistant? Could the murders be the work of a copycat? Before long, it gets murkier with tendrils leading to a beautiful woman from a powerful family, her unscrupulous father, a team of mercenaries, a multinational corporation, and a government cover up. When he manages to sleep, Coleridge is terrorized by a black wolf in dream sequences that are evocative of early Stephen King. But unlike Barron’s first novel, most of the violent action occurs off stage. (AP)

In the joyous ‘Toy Story 4,’ the toys evolve too Lindsey Bahr Los Angeles (AP) - It’s futile to ask “why more” in the movie business, but it’s hard not to go in a little suspicious of a fourth “Toy Story.” The trilogy was so perfect. What more could we ask of Woody and Buzz? What more did we as an audience need? If we got another, would it live up to the unbridled joy and emotional satisfaction of the first three? And if it was bad, would it tarnish the others? Sure it might sound a little dramatic to get this emotionally invested in the legacy of an animated series about anthropomorphic toys, but Pixar and Disney did this to themselves by creating something so precious and lasting. But I’m delighted to report that the fears were unwarranted. “Toy Story 4 “ is a blast and it’s great to be back with the gang. It took a herculean effort behind the scenes to get here

too, nine years after “Toy Story 3” left many of us sobbing in our seats. Ousted Pixar head John Lasseter, who directed the first two, was supposed to direct and the screenplay switched hands three years into development (which helps explain why eight writers get “story by” credits). Eventually the project was handed over to animator, sometimes voice actor and first time feature director Josh Cooley to bring it home. None of that disorder is apparent on the screen, however. A flashback tells us what happened to Bo Peep (Annie Potts) all those years ago, and reminds us where we left off: With Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the toys being passed on to a new kid, Bonnie, as their beloved Andy heads off to college. But it turns out Andy’s talk with Bonnie about his favorite toy Woody didn’t have much of an impact on the fickle

New York (AP) — Universal Music has unveiled a previously unheard and unreleased song by the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The record label announced the track “Time Waits for No One,” which was originally recorded in 1986 for the concept album of the musical “Time” with musician Dave Clark. A video to accompany the song was also released and

includes unseen performance footage of Mercury. It was recorded in April 1986 at London’s Dominion Theatre. Mercury died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991 at 45. He was the subject of the uber-successful film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which won actor Rami Malek an Academy Award. The film also won Oscars for best sound editing, best sound mixing and best film editing.

5-year-old. At playtime she prefers Jessie and often leaves Woody in the closet with the rest of the toys she’s outgrown. “Remember house,” a forlorn chair (Carol Burnett) says wistfully, as they all notice Woody has picked up his first dust bunny. This sends him into a panic spiral as he grasps for anything that will make him essential to Bonnie’s life. When she decides that a deranged arts and crafts project made of a spork she calls Forky is her new favorite toy, Woody becomes his protector. Tony

Hale provides the perfect voice for this insane but charming addition who keeps trying to jump in the trash. (It’s his destiny as a disposable utensil after all!) Indeed, “Toy Story 4” introduces a whole batch of fun new characters, like the Canadian stuntman Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves), the 50s antique and all around head case Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) and her creepy “Vincent” henchmen. There’s also Combat Carl (Carl Weathers), Bunny (Jordan Peele) and Ducky

(Keegan-Michael Key). And pay close attention and you might also spot Melephant Brooks (Mel Brooks) and Carl Reineroceros (Carl Reiner) too. A family RV trip takes all the toys to a new location, where Woody encounters Bo Peep for the first time in almost a decade. She relishes her freedom as a lost toy and leads a happy, ragtag existence wandering around and meeting new kids everywhere. It’s enough to make even the most loyal toy question his purpose.

And they go on some enormously fun and inventive adventures trying to get Forky back to Bonnie. The signature “Toy Story” wit and irreverence might not be quite as sharp as it was before, but there are enough truly inspired moments to keep you smiling as you savor the unexpected fun. Cooley and the writers even brilliantly play on some kidfriendly horror movie tropes, adding a fresh dimension to this journey. If there is a complaint, it’s that Woody and Bo’s quest takes us away from most of the original toys for a large part of the movie, although Buzz still finds a way to be part of it. Although it doesn’t exactly reach the emotional heights of the previous films, the conclusion is still effective and well executed. Let this be a lesson to all franchise cynics: Sometimes more is actually good. Woody needed some closure he couldn’t even comprehend. And, it turns out, so did we. “Toy Story 4,” a Walt Disney Co. release, is rated G by the Motion Picture Association of America. Running time: 100 minutes. Three stars out of four.

A vaccine against misleading information? and New Zealand in the last two years. In essence, he said, there should be no debate about vaccination. The vast hard body of scientific evidence is overwhelming in its favour. But he believes that explanations of somewhat complex situations, especially of risks and probability, have not always been communicated clearly. There remain issues around vaccination which need to be communicated and understood by all, especially concerned parents and guardians.

their own doctor or medical institution before deciding what is best for them and their loved ones. He thinks that most people know or have heard some of the debate for or against the benefits of vaccination. Whether this is from speakers to the general public, friends, social media, news media or other sources. Andy said there has always been opposition to vaccinations in general. Often this has caused furious debate or adverse reactions. Today, it is so easy to reach millions of people through digital and social media. He stressed that one hopes for greater acceptance of vaccination but fears perhaps a greater audience for the deniers. There is no doubt of the influence of such methods. Andy said it is a sad fact that vaccination malformation has reached such a point that the World Health Organisation has been moved to declare, “One of the greatest challenges for Public Health Authorities is how to respond to today’s proliferation of misleading information about vaccines” - outbreaks of once almost forgotten childhood diseases have occurred in the USA, Europe

Andy Barraclough listens attentively as a member of the PCEC audience poses a question about his presentation on the benefit of being vaccinated to prevent many known diseases.

Of particular interest to his audience was this chart Andy Barraclough displayed showing suggested vaccinations for those living in Thailand.

He went on to show many graphs and articles that illustrate, clearly he feels to the satisfaction of most, the advisability of having vaccinations. Andy showed how the diseases again proliferated after fake news convinced people to stop having the injections. These widespread news articles and the unfortunate use in some areas of fake vaccines leaves people confused and uncertain. The doctor showed maps of parts of the World where the mainly Muslim communities had not accepted the

Professor Andy Barraclough at the June 23 meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) shared information he has compiled over the years, about the effectiveness of being vaccinated against common diseases. With discussions and debates about the benefits or dangers of vaccination continuing in the media and other public forums, through his ongoing study of the issues presented, he has more information than the average person. Being very committed to the evidence-based approach he says his information is based on proven figures and facts. To this end he has travelled and investigated all the documented and empirical proofs he could accumulate. He showed his PCEC audience many of the graphs and lists compiled by various bodies. Before beginning, he made clear that the material and opinion he presented represent his own personal belief on the evidence collected and people spoken to. He himself has no doubt as to the efficiency of vaccination. But he strongly suggested that he was not offering medical advice and at no time should one fail to consult

Professor Andy Barraclough summarizes his talk to the PCEC stressing that vaccination works to reduce disease, but for it to work effectively, a large proportion of the population needs to take part. He emphasized that you should rely on the scientific evidence and not fake news and unfounded reports to the contrary.

protection offered by the use of vaccines; notwithstanding proclamations by Muslim leaders to the contrary. These missed/abstaining areas clearly showed how all common diseases had proliferated. This illustrated what he referred to as the “Herd Immunity,” which he described as being the situation where the majority have been vaccinated against disease, then they do not contract it, thus reducing the opportunity for the infection to spread to those who may not be vaccinated. Thus, where one finds a pocket of resistance to getting vaccinated, the disease will spread among those in that area. So, there could be no doubt why people sickened there, but nowhere else in the country. Yes, he stated, fake news

about vaccines not being effective or having danger do exist. Further, figures show fake news travels at six times the speed of real news. Recently some such claim that Autism is caused by using vaccines, with the most recent being the vaccine against measles. Although, as usual with these claims, there is no evidence to back up such so-called news, they do get believed. As a result, there has been a large outbreak of measles cases in the USA and elsewhere. He explained that fake news uses any tenuous link to show dangers in vaccines. Whilst in all honesty there is so much evidence around that shows vaccines do work. His graphs clearly showed that when vaccinations increase, there is a dramatic drop in the disease.

There were figures to show such decreases. He mentioned that Polio has almost been eradicated. He noted that measles for example hits 1 in 100 rather than the previous 1 in 500. With HIV, between 1990 and 1993 after a vaccine was introduced, cases fell from 20,000 to 1,500. Andy pointed out there are similar massive decreases in diseases whenever and wherever vaccines are used. Here in Thailand Dr Barraclough said Japanese encephalitis is often found in and around the countryside and in caves. But there is a vaccine for this disease which one should get if they often travel in the rural areas or explore any of the many caves. Likewise, he advises vaccines for all commonly found problems such as Tetanus, Rabies and Hepatitis B be taken. Overall, Andy stressed that vaccination works. For it to work consistently and effectively, a large proportion of the population needs to take part, thus providing for “herd immunity.” Further, his talk was aimed at showing how important vaccination is plus how important it is to discount fake news and misinformation about vaccination. All of his presentation slides can be viewed at: http:// w w w. p c e c n e w s . c o m / permNL/PCEC-Presentation-on-Vaccination.pdf. The presentation was followed by announcements and news of special interest groups, then the Open Forum where the audience can ask questions or make comments about expat living in Thailand, especially Pattaya. However, the stand-out was Kevin LaBar who scorched around the course with his best ever score of 44 points to be 8 points clear of his closest rivals. Colin Smith returned to form with a handy 36 points for second in “A” flight ahead of three players on 35 points. An unusual occurrence saw two scores of 42 points in one round. Colm O’Donovan lifted his game another notch to amass that big score, and fulfill his hope of going down to 16 handicap whilst taking first spot in “B” flight. Buchanan & Duncan share the limelight Another day dawned and golfers made their way to the Khao Kheow Country Club, to play this challenging course for the June, New Nordic PAGS tournament. The day’s field of 82 players, which included 7 ladies, had an eye on the weather conditions, and with good reason too, as a few storms had been experienced over the previous few days. We played the B & C combination, with the course being in reasonable condition after the recent storms, with a variety of the yellow & white tee boxes used. Greens were running smoothly, although the recent rain softened the fairways reducing much run. Organisors had implemented ‘lift, clean & place’ on the closely mown areas to avoid the dreaded mud ball on the soft fairways. David Buchanan (H/cap 1) was the standout performer, shooting 74 off the stick to claim the Low Gross award, his maximum 2 technicals (although he did have another 2 returned to the Lucky Draw pool) and was beaten out

Last month’s winner Mika Viljakainen (8) got the bronze medal position, edging out David Buchanan and Jari Laakonen, after all signed for 35 points. B flight for handicaps 14-20 winner was John Fenwick (20) with 37 points, while the minor placings were a tightly contested affair with a countback to the last 3 holes required. Werner Schwarz (14) got the nod with his 9 points on the last 3, over Joerg Mueller (14) after both signed for 36 points. In the C flight for handicaps 21 & above, there was a clear win for Andy Richards (22) with 37 points, 2 ahead of Bryan Reid (23), while the low spot on the podium went to Todd Fox (32) with 34 points. Friday, June 28, Parichat - Scramble The Billabong monthly scramble was held at Parichat Golf Club on Friday. The scoring as predicted

was good but not spectacular, and there was only 3 shots separating the eight groups that played. The Courtyard Cavaliers of Geoff Couch, Arch Armstrong, Jeff North and Tony Oakes took third prize with a score of 61.2. Coming in second was the Billabong A team of Todd Givens, Nok Givens, Sasicha Duangkham and Sandy Chapo with a score of 61, but the quartet of Auke Engekles, Bob StAubin, Andrew and Glenn Smith took the prize and rang the bell with a score of 60.8.

Treasure Hill was the venue selected for today’s event A course that usually draws a crowd failed us today as there were only six players. The course was in great shape, everything that you would expect from Treasure Hill, and we played it from the white tees. There was one shining light on the day and that was evergreen himself Keith Buchanan, running out today’s winner with 35 points. Second in was Rod Weekes, knocking off Buffalo Bill via the countback system.

Seventeen golfers were here to have a go at winning the coveted June monthly mug and Pattavia was the venue for the day’s challenge. Fairways were in

good condition (as always), greens played a little slower than normal and bunkers were clean and tidy and not too much traffic on the course. Glenn Henriksen showed a clear pair of heels to the rest of the field as his net 68 put him out in front. Second home was Denis Steele (only 3 shots behind the leader), third home was Nat Rukkid and Dick Braimbridge filled the fourth and final spot on the podium.

We had our largest group out for some time with two flights today and while it started off nice and our first group got fourteen holes played before the rain came, and when it did it was very heavy and lasted a long time. Some members of our group were going very well before the rain started but the wet conditions meant that they didn’t finish so well. One of those was Craig Hitchens (H/cap 13) who was burning it up and while he still managed to finish with thirty-six points it was only good enough for him to finish in second place in the A flight as Shaun Merriman (11)

A small field today and the course was quite and in fairly good condition, with the greens a good speed. No one played to handicap today as the pin placements were a bit tricky. In first place was Ted Morris (H/cap 17) with 35 points, second went to Glenn Armitstead (15) and playing his last game before a trip back home Joe McArdle (15) took third on 31. Russel Gilroy & Daryl Burkett shared the 2’s pot.

Watts prevails at damp Pattana PSC Golf from the Bunker Boys Monday, June 24, Pattana B & C – Stableford 1st Robby Watts (8) 37pts 2nd Stuart Brown (9) 36pts 3rd Michael Brett (15) 34pts We teed off on time under grey skies in cool conditions but by the time the first group putted out on B1 the rain started to come down and quickly grew heavier forcing a retreat to the nearest drinks station. After a delay of about an hour and a quarter, the rain lightened sufficiently for play to resume. By this time the course was sodden with casual water in the fairways and on the greens, however, it drained away quite quickly. Despite the testing conditions a few golfers managed to return decent scores with the best being Robby Watts who carded a score of thirty-seven. Stuart Brown, another Aussie from Wagga Wagga took second place with thirty-six while Michael Brett rounded out the scoring with a thirtyfour having faded badly on the closing holes. Best near pin of the day went to skinny who got very close on the longest par three, with Barry Murnin and Robby Watts taking two of the remaining three.

Wednesday, June 26, Greenwood B & C – Stableford 1st Michael Brett (15) 36pts 2nd Sean Murphy (20) 35pts 3rd Stuart Brown (9) 34pts A great lesson from today is always to play with a distinctive readily recognisable ball to avoid playing an incorrect one, as today’s winner did incurring a two-stroke penalty and wiping the hole.

Jimmy presents Sean Murphy with the golfer of the month trophy.

Despite that slip up, it was a solid round from Michael Brett who took first place with thirty-six points. Sean Murphy continued on his merry way playing consistently good golf and scoring thirty-five to take second place one stroke adrift with Stuart Brown in third place on thirty-four. Three of the four near pins were won with one each to Stuart Brown, Geoff Cox, and Michael Brett.

Friday, June 28, Bangpakong Stableford 1st Barry Murnin 38pts 2nd Jimmy Carr 36pts 3rd Robby Watts 34pts Normally this course is in

excellent condition, lush and green and well manicured, but not the case today. There were a number of bare or brown areas on the fairways and the greens which had been recently cored and sanded were slow and bumpy. Despite a poor front nine, Barry Murnin stormed home on the back to take first place with a very respectable score of thirty-eight points. Second place went to Jimmy Carr with thirty-six and Robby Watts in third place on thirty-four. In the race for the golfer of the month, Sean Murphy who didn’t improve his score today had done enough to hold off a fast finishing Jimmy Carr, nice to see a visitor take the prize for a change.

Gauff, just 15, shocks 5-time champ Venus, 39, at Wimbledon Howard Fendrich Wimbledon, England (AP) — Coco Gauff grew up admiring the Williams sisters. Picked up a tennis racket as a little girl because of them. And on Monday at Wimbledon, still just 15, Gauff beat one of them. Gauff, the youngest competitor to qualify at the All England Club in the professional era, showed the poise and power of a much older, much more experienced player, pulling off a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the first round over Venus Williams, who at 39 was the oldest woman in the field. When it ended, Gauff dropped her racket and put her hands on her head. After a handshake and exchange of words at the net with Williams, Gauff knelt by her sideline chair and tears welled in her eyes. Up in the stands, her father leaped out of his seat. “Honestly, I don’t really know how to feel. This is the

first time I ever cried after a match. Or winning, obviously; I’ve cried after a loss before,” said Gauff, who is based in Florida. “I don’t even know how to explain how I feel.” This was her third tourlevel match; Williams has played more than 1,000. This was Gauff’s first match at Wimbledon, where Williams has played more than 100 and won five titles. By the time Gauff was born in 2004, Williams already had spent time at No. 1 in the rankings and owned four of her seven Grand Slam singles trophies. “It didn’t really seem real, for a moment,” said Gauff’s father, Corey, between handshakes and slaps on the back and requests for selfies from spectators leaving No. 1 Court. “On the walk to the court, I was walking behind her. She was excited. I was excited. She seemed confident, but I wasn’t sure if it was false confidence

or she really was. I just said to her: This match is really magical. Just enjoy it. Your first Wimbledon main draw and you’re on a main court against somebody you looked up to from the beginning.” It was by far the most anticipated match of Day 1 at the grass-court tournament,

Yankees complete London sweep of Red Sox By Ronald Blum AP Baseball Writer London (AP) — Britain treasures tradition, and the New York Yankees wrapped up Major League Baseball’s first trip to Europe with one of their sport’s classic customs: a lateinning pinstriped comeback. Gary Sánchez hit a goahead, two-run single in a nine-run seventh, and the Yankees overcome a four-run deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox 12-8 last Sunday for a two-game sweep of the groundbreaking, high-scoring trek across the pond. “It was a pretty cool experience,” Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge said. DJ LeMahieu doubled off Marcus Walden (6-1) leading off the seventh and hit a two-run double against Josh Taylor later in the inning as the Yankees opened an 11-4 lead, sending 14 batters to the plate in their highestscoring inning in four years. “The energy never let up,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It felt like a huge event, these two games.” Boston and New York combined for 50 runs in the whack-y games, four more than in any previous consecutive matchups of the rivals. 15 doubles and 10 homers over 18 innings that took 9 hours, 6 minutes to play out at the Olympic Stadium in London. While “Sweet Caroline” in the eighth inning brought the atmosphere of Fenway Park, the final out triggered the playing of “New York, New York,” making it seem like a summer night in the Bronx. The games at the home of the soccer club West Ham drew 118,718 fans, a mix mostly of Americans who flew over and Britons. “Like I was telling the guys yesterday, it felt like a soccer match at the end, so it was pretty cool,” said New

York’s Didi Gregorius, who went deep against Ryan Brasier in the eighth and extended New York’s record streak of games with home runs to 31. New York won the opener 17-13 after taking an 11-run lead and the finale after going ahead 12-4. Zack Britton ruled Britannia both days, escaping eighth-inning trouble with the tying run at the plate. New York relied on an Old Chap — Aroldis Chapman — who closed out each game and struck out the final three batters Sunday. “I did not think I would pitch in both games, winning by that many runs,” Chapman said. Built for the 2012 Olympics, the stadium was designed for minimal wind, leading to speculation that might have been a factor in pitchers’ difficulty locating breaking balls. The temperature dropped to a more normal 73 degrees at first pitch — 20 below Saturday’s scorcher.

but hardly the only upset. Two-time major champion Naomi Osaka, who was No. 1 until a week ago, lost 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Yulia Putinseva, joining two young members of the men’s top-10, No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, on the way out. Novak Djokovic’s entourage was joined by a new member at Centre Court on Monday: 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, the only man to win the tournament as a wildcard recipient. Ivanisevic sat next to defending champion Djokovic’s long-time coach, Marian

Vajda, during the top-seeded Serb’s 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber. “We both agreed that we were looking for someone that was a former champion, someone that knows how I feel on the court, someone that has been through that,” said Djokovic, who is pursuing a fifth Wimbledon title and 16th major trophy in all. “We agreed with the ... idea of introducing a new coach to our team, an addition like Boris Becker was back a few years ago. It was a very successful period with Boris. We’re hoping we can have the same with Goran.”

Verstappen wins Austrian GP to end Mercedes’ unbeaten streak From page 28 Verstappen seemed to lose hope of a repeat of last year’s triumph when his Red Bull barely moved as the lights at the start switched to green. He immediately lost six places and complained over the team radio about “clipping,” hinting at a lack of power likely due to a hydraulic issue. Verstappen needed until the 10th lap to get back to fifth, behind both Mercedes cars and the Ferraris. Battling for victory with Leclerc at the end, Verstappen had the advantage of fresher and thus quicker tires. In what was widely regarded as a risky strategy, Ferrari started on the soft tires while Red Bull and Mercedes opted for the medium compound. While the tires helped Leclerc hold on to his lead at the start, they were affected

more by the heat than the medium ones on the Red Bull cars. While Leclerc switched to the hard tires in lap 22, Verstappen pitted 11 laps later and the newer tires gave him an edge in the final laps. “We stayed out (on the mediums) quite long. Once we came out again we had great pace,” Verstappen said. “One-by-one we were overtaking the cars ahead. The car really came to life.” With track temperatures reaching 51 degrees Celsius (123 F), tire management was always going to be a key factor in the race. Hamilton (six) and Bottas (two) had combined to win all eight previous races this season. Dating back to October last year, when Verstappen won the Mexican GP, Mercedes’ winning streak consisted of 10 races, leaving the team one short of the all-time best mark set

by McLaren more than three decades ago. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won the first 11 races of 1988, the season that Senna won the first of his three F1 titles. Their winning streak was ended by Ferrari’s Gerhard Berger. Mercedes failed to win an 11th straight race twice before, in 2015 and 2016. The first Austrian GP since Niki Lauda passed away last month paid tribute to the three-time F1 champion from Austria. Two of Lauda’s championship winning cars, the 1975 Ferrari and the 1984 McLaren, were on display in the paddock and fan zone, respectively. Also, Turn 1 of the track was renamed “Niki Lauda corner.” In the stands, more than 50,000 of Lauda’s trademark red caps were distributed. Crusaders beat Hurricanes 30-26 in Super Rugby semifinal Christchurch, New Zealand (AP) — Defending champions the Crusaders will host Argentina’s Jaguares in this weekend’s Super Rugby final after beating the Hurricanes 30-26 last Saturday to continue their quest for a 10th title and their third in consecutive years. Winger Sevu Reece scored two tries — his 14th and 15th of the season — and flyhalf Richie Mo’unga scored a try and kicked six goals for 20 points to propel the Crusaders into the final for the 14th time. Earlier, the Jaguares extended a history-making season with a 39-7 win over the ACT Brumbies in Buenos

Aires to reach the final for the first time in their fourth year in the tournament. The Crusaders were dominant early in the first half Saturday, taking a 13-0 lead as the Hurricanes squandered possession with thoughtless kicking. But when the Hurricanes held onto the ball and attacked the defensive line the match turned into a thrilling exhibition of tit-for-tat scoring. Center Ngani Laumape scored two tries as the Hurricanes cut the Crusaders’ lead to 13-7 at halftime. They matched the Crusaders try for try through the second half but never held the lead, closing within one point

without bridging the gap. The match ended in controversy when the Australian referee called a knock-on when the Hurricanes were hot on attack. The ball had been knocked on by the Crusaders and the call took away the Hurricanes’ last scoring chance. “It’s always tough defending these guys,” Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock said. “We did a great job until 39 minutes in (when the Hurricanes scored their first try). “The Hurricanes scored one and then all of a sudden the floodgates opened. We’re really happy, though. The boys stuck together and managed to get there in the end.”

Egan Bernal set to impress at unpredictable Tour de France Samuel Petrequin Paris (AP) — Egan Bernal is just 22 years old. Two years younger than Eddy Merckx was when the Belgian great won his first Tour de France half a century ago. Gifted with superb bike handling and climbing skills, Bernal has matured by leaps and bounds to become cycling’s most exciting Grand Tour rider, and one of the top contenders at cycling’s marquee three-week race, which starts this weekend from Belgium. Even Merckx, who has seen myriads of riders trying to emulate his feat over the years, has been impressed. In March, the fivetime winner tipped Bernal as a future Tour champion after the Colombian phenomenon won the prestigious Paris-Nice one-week race at a younger age than he did. Bernal’s time to deliver on the biggest stage was not supposed to come so early, though. After competing at his first Tour last summer and doing an impressive job in support of teammates Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome, Bernal was set to get a maiden leader experience at a three-week race at the Giro d’Italia this Spring. But a training crash left him with a collarbone fracture that ruled him out of the race and left him on the sidelines for 76 days. Bernal returned to competition with a bang, winning the Tour de Suisse at the end of June. For all his prowess, he was set to keep a low profile this summer and to ride in support of Froome. But the British star rider suffered a horrific crash at the Criterium du Dauphine that ended both his hopes of winning a record-equaling fifth Tour title, and season.

Team Ineos’ Egan Bernal rides during the 9.5 km time trial during the Tour de Suisse UCI WorldTour cycling race, on Saturday, June 15, 2019. (Urs Flueeler/Keystone via AP)

With Froome out of the picture, the leadership at Ineos — the former Sky team — logically fell to Thomas, the defending Tour champion. But Thomas’ preparations for the Tour have been far from ideal. He has not won a race this season and, even worse, abandoned the Tour de Suisse this month after crashing before the race hit the mountains, meaning he did not test his legs at high altitude in racing conditions. Bernal keeps saying he will race in support of Thomas but, as was shown last year when Froome accepted to work for Thomas, hierarchy within the Ineos squad is defined by performances on the road. “I don’t choose to say that I’m the favorite,” Bernal said after his victory in Switzerland. “In any case, I will go with G (Thomas), he will be our leader. I will try to help him. If he’s better than me, for sure I will help him. I don’t have any problems to help him. I’m just 22 years old, so I think that I have a lot of Tours in front of me.” With Bernal touted as cycling’s future star, it is fitting that the Tour starts in Brussels to mark the 50th

anniversary of the first of Merckx’s five Tour victories. The route features five summit finishes, including three stages finishing above 2,000 meters, and only 54 kilometers of time trialing. That perfectly suits Bernal’s qualities. A natural-born climber, he has developed into an all-rounder capable of limiting time losses to minimum damage in the race against the clock. The 3,480-kilometer (2,145mile) race begins with a flat stage for sprinters around the city of Brussels and stays there the next day for a 27-kilometer team time trial. After leaving Belgium, the Tour snakes through the Champagne and Lorraine regions before a first mountain test at the Planche des Belles Filles, in Alsace. This year’s best bits include Stage 14 on July 20 that features a climb up the Tourmalet pass — one of the most famed in Tour history — and three days of Alpine climbing on stages 18-20. There is an ascent up the leg-breaking Galibier and imposing Iseran — standing 2,770 meters (9,100 feet) — and a relentless 33.4-kilometer trek up to the ski resort of Val Thorens.

The Crusaders took an early lead when Reece scored a brilliant opening try. Fullback David Havili won the ball in the air and center Ryan Crotty put in a cross kick for Reece who was unguarded on the right wing. He managed to pick up the ball at full pace and score wide out. A conversion and two penalties by Mo’unga gave the Crusaders a 13-0 lead. When the Hurricanes finally attacked with ball in hand they created a try to Laumape immediately before halftime which kept them in the match. The Hurricanes scored through winger Ben Lam

immediately after the re-start but flyhalf Beauden Barrett missed a conversion which would have given his team their first lead. Barrett was guilty of kicking the ball away early but turned the game around for the Hurricanes when he ran at the defense in the second half. The Crusaders quickly answered Lam’s try with a try to Mo’unga, opening an eight-point lead. Laumape’s second try cut the lead again to a single point. Reece’s second try, created by superb passing among the Cruaders’ back row of Kieran Read, Matt Todd and Jordan Taufua, again made the lead eight points.

Hurricanes scrum half T.J. Perenara, in a record 127th appearance for the franchise, reached out to score a try in the 61st minute which kept hearts racing inside the final quarter. The Hurricanes attacked frequently in the last few minutes without managing the vital breakthrough. “That’s been the theme for us all week, just being relentless and never giving up,” Hurricanes captain Dane Coles said. “I thought we absorbed a lot of that pressure in the first half and were pretty happy with 13-7 at halftime. “We started pretty well in the second half but some of those tries they got were pretty easy.”

Assen, Netherlands (AP) — Maverick Vinales held off world champion Marc Marquez to win his first MotoGP race of the season at the Motul TT Assen last Sunday. While Vinales won on his Yamaha in hot, dry conditions

in the northern Dutch city, fellow Spaniard Marquez extended his lead at the top of the season standings over second-placed Andrea Dovizioso, who finished fourth. After starting from pole, 20year-old Frenchman Fabio

Quartararo finished third on his Yamaha. Alex Rins, third in the season standings, fell and did not finish. Crowd favorite Valentino Rossi also crashed out and was unable to complete the race.

Are autonomous cars going to disrupt all our lives?

Shopping for a loan As the cost to own a new vehicle is rising, it’s more important than ever to consider what you’ll pay for a car loan and to shop for the best interest rate. It is difficult to work out percentages used with loans in Thailand, but the following pointers can be looked at when you are in the marketplace. The average new car loan interest rate reached 5.5% in 2018 in the UK, up about one percentage point from the previous year, according to Ben Bartosch, J.D. Power’s manager of forecast analytics. Meanwhile, a new car purchase price is going up, on average, he says. That means a buyer will pay thousands of baht in interest on a 60-month loan. With the shift in the loan market, anyone looking to buy a car or refinance a loan needs smart strategies. Here are five things financial and automotive experts say will help you lock in financing that fits your budget. 1. Check your credit rating If you don’t know your credit score, you don’t know what interest rate you could qualify for. Additionally, if you find a problem on your credit report, you can fix it before entering the car-buying process. And, if you already have a loan, you may be able to refinance into a lower rate of payment if your credit is stronger than when you started the loan. Your credit score is available from many personal finance websites, banks and credit card issuers. 2. Shop around for the best rate The loan-shopping process should start long before the car-buying process, Bartosch says. Calling around, or submitting online applications, could save you hundreds of dollars. To compare loan offers, keep these terms the same: Loan amount: In addition to the negotiated purchase price of the car, sales tax and fees will increase the amount you’ll need to borrow.

Loans this way.

Down payment: The more you put down, the less you have to borrow, saving you money on interest and it might help qualify you for a better rate. 3. Can you really afford it? Experts recommend 60-month loans for new cars and 36 months for used vehicles. Aim to spend no more than 10% of your take-home pay on your loan payment and less than 20% for total car expenses, which also includes gas, insurance, repairs and maintenance. If you’re refinancing, extending your loan term can lower your monthly payment, but you may pay more in interest overall. 4 Look at pre-approval Pre-approval can help you get the most competitive rate. Some shoppers coming in with preapproved loans from credit unions, but others, he says, are waiting for 0% financing from car manufacturers’ lending companies. 5. Review the contract While the loan contract is long and the verbiage is dense, it’s important to review it carefully before signing. Double-check the numbers. Mistakes (sometimes intentional) do happen. If the numbers don’t add up, make sure the lender hasn’t slipped in extra items you don’t want, like an extended warranty or gap insurance. And question any extra fees you weren’t told about initially or that other lenders don’t charge.

The (real) Mini is 60 It is difficult to comprehend that Alec Issigonis’ Mini was first released in 1959, and I do make a difference between the BMC Mini and the BMW MINI (which of course it isn’t). However, BMW themselves prefer to

use the name all in caps to make sure there is no confusion. The BMC Mini went from drawing board to showroom floor in less than three years. In today’s computer age, manufacturers take five years as the industry standard.

An early Mini.

To say the Mini was popular, was an understatement. Over its lifetime, they sold 5,387,062 and was the most formidable British car to influence the world marketplace. I had a Mini 850 in 1960 and a 1275 GT in 1990. They were not perfect. They had some peculiar quirks, but they made motoring fun.

Stephen Rice and Scott Winter, of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University believe so, publishing their views in “The Conversation”, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. Rice and Winter believe autonomous cars will change people’s travel habits not only around their own communities but across much larger distances. Their research has revealed just how much people’s travel preferences could shift, and found a new potential challenge to the airline industry. Imagine someone who lives in Bangkok and needs to travel to Chiang Mai, for business. This is about a 10-hour drive. A flight takes about two hours, assuming no delays. Add to that the drive to the airport, checking in, the security line and waiting at the gate. Upon arrival in Chiang Mai it may take another 30 minutes to pick up any checked bags and find a rental car – and even more time to drive to the specific destination. The average person would estimate a total travel time of four to five fours as private car and plane. However, if they could have a fully driverless car take them there, the choice changes. Passengers could eat, drink, work and sleep during the 10-hour drive. They could leave whenever they want, and pack whatever they want – including liquids and pocketknives – with no searches or scans. When they get to Chiang Mai they wouldn’t have to find a rental car and navigate to the actual place they’re going. Which would you choose? Now imagine the self-driving car has a reclining seat with actual legroom, or even a bed. It’s more than a little tempting. Experts in public opinion research says that the public loves how quickly flights can cover large distances, but hates the security checks, long lines, delays, risk of losing baggage and overall hassle of the flying experience. We also know that at the moment, most people are reluctant to ride in driverless vehicles – including school buses and even ambulances that could speed their treatment in an emergency. However, our data also

Autonomous driving.

shows that as people learn about the benefits of driverless cars, they become more accepting of the new technology. Over time, people will feel comfortable using autonomous cars (and ambulances), just like they adjusted to riding in the first automobiles. In their study, the data indicated that people preferred driverless vehicles over manual driving. Taking your own driverless car got even more attractive if people were told that after flying, they would need a rental car in their destination city. On short trips, with a five-hour drive, twothirds of people would rather drive themselves. That didn’t change much when they were offered a self-driving car, unless they were told they would need a car in their destination city. Then nearly three-quarters of people preferred a self-driving car to flying. How will this affect the airlines? Losing even one in 10 customers would substantially reduce airlines’ revenue. They don’t make much money on each flight as it is; less income would likely cause them to shrink their service, flying fewer routes less frequently. These changes could substantially change the aviation industry, with airlines ordering fewer airplanes from manufacturers, airports seeing fewer daily flights and lower revenue from parking lots, and even airport hotels hosting fewer guests. The future of driverless cars is appealing to consumers – which means the future of commercial flight is in danger. (I believe this article is a little too negative, but undoubtedly autonomous travel is in the future.)

What did we learn from Austria? We learned that it is still possible to have excitement in F1, however the stewards still show their inability to make quick, sensible decisions. At the Canadian Grand Prix, first across the line had been Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, however as he exceeded the track limits while dicing with Hamilton (Mercedes), he was penalized by 5 seconds being added to his time, effectively relegating him to second place. This time, with Leclerc (Ferrari) and Verstappen (Red Bull) dicing neck and neck, the Ferrari driver was forced to take an off-track excursion on the second last lap. After deliberating for a couple of hours, the stewards (this time) said no penalty. There are far too many rules promulgated by the FIA and in attempting to appear even handed, just showed the nonsensical nature of the rule itself. Anyone who has raced a car (or go-kart)

has been pushed off the track during a passing maneuver at some stage. The usual way to get past someone is to take the apex from him by sliding in underneath. The car being passed then either cedes the position on track, or runs out of road (off track). Ayrton Senna was very skilled in that procedure. “Give way or crash!” Another ridiculous rule and attendant penalty was position in the grid box. Haas driver Magnussen even wound up with a drivethrough penalty for being out of position at the start. “Out of position” was around 100 mm with his wheel on the line. A nonsensical application of a silly rule. After Qualifying, the front row was all youngsters with Leclerc on pole and Verstappen alongside. The second row was all Mercedes with Bottas in front of Hamilton. It was not the World Champion’s day. Mercedes finally had a genuine fight on their hands on two fronts, with both Ferrari and Red Bull looking Results 1. Max Verstappen 2. Charles Leclerc 3. Valtteri Bottas 4. Sebastian Vettel 5. Lewis Hamilton

the better race cars. Bottas looked to be coasting to a composed second, before losing out to Verstappen later on. Managing an overheating race car, the Finn didn’t put up too much of a fight. Hamilton fared worse after running wide over the kerbs and damaging his front wing. He pitted for a replacement which cost him places on track, and with similar heating issues, he lacked the speed to chase those ahead. Meanwhile, way down in the field, but still showing lots of fight, Alex Albon said, “Unfortunately, we didn’t have the pace today, it was a tough first stint where we weren’t quick enough. We weren’t too bad in the second half of the race, but we lost too much time in the first stint. It’s a difficult one to swallow because our long runs were looking quite good on Friday, and that’s two races in a row where we’ve struggled with the balance of the car, so we need to figure out where we can improve.” A truer word never spoken. Mediterranean Wines with a twist of American Japanese The Benihana restaurant (beach side in the Avani Pattaya) promoted a wine tasting under the heading of Mediterranean Wines with a twist of American Japanese. If this sounds ambitious, it was, but the theatrical side of Benihana plus the knowledgeable opinions from the Bangkok Beer and Beverages’ Sales Manager Teera Weerawan. To assist the diners, we were all supplied with a review sheet allowing us to grade the six wines we would meet during the evening.

The format was simple with a welcome drink and nibbles, including crispy nori sheet, cheese and oysters (and more) in the outer part of the Benihana. The welcome tipple was a very more-ish Villa Sandi Blanc de Blancs, Spumante Brut (Italian), just enough bubbles to make it interesting and drier than the usual Italian starter of a Prosecco. A brief mention of the Italian wine grading is in order before venturing further. The Italian Wine Classification

system (similar to the U.S. appellation system) is made up of four categories: top of the bottle is the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) followed by Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) then Indicazione di Geografica Tipica (IGT) and finally Vino Da Tavola (VdT).

but the Pinot was just a little better for my palate. The first red was next, the Marques de Riscal Vina Collada Rioja DOC (Spain), an accompaniment to a rack of lamb with mint jelly. As always I caution that wine appreciation is a very personal factor, and for me this was very pleasant.

The ‘select’ white wines were excellent.

A diner is mesmerized by Teera Weerawan’s expert knowledge of the wines.

An array of Mediterranean wines served that evening.

The staff are very friendly and attentive.

After our welcome spumante brut, we retired to the inner section of Benihana where the liveried chefs were waiting with a hot BBQ plate. We were also given the second wine for the evening, a Danzante Pinot Grigio Veneto IGT (Italian). This was an excellent pinot with a very long finish and I took the proffered second glass gladly. The Benihana theatre continued with a French Joseph Mellot Destinea, Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley to go with the chef’s patter and flying food! The chef presented us with Gindara fish with Miso sauce, and I did enjoy this wine as well,

The next course was a Chateau Lagrezette Seigneur de Grezette Malbec (France) paired with an Australian marbled tenderloin. This was

the wine of the night and the course of the night for me. The meat was cooked exactly to my order and the wine was excellent, and the winery claims 500 years of Malbec tradition. We all began to slow down by this stage with a cheese platter and desserts including a ‘Death by Chocolate’ with a San Marzano Primitivo di Manduria Talo DOC (Italy) otherwise known as a Zinfandel in the USA and thank you K. Teera for enlightening us.

It was a fun evening and I have always said that food should be fun. This was, and congratulations K. Asanee (Avani) for promoting this event. Sautéed prawns in white wine and cheese Thailand is lucky in that prawns are always plentiful, with salt water and fresh water varieties, and in your local market are very cheap. Large prawns can be found cheaply even in the supermarkets. The flavor from using coriander makes this an ‘Asian’ dish. One important feature with all prawn dishes is not to overcook, otherwise the prawns will get very tough and rubbery. It is also suggested that you remove shells, heads and tails and de-vein the prawns before cooking, although some people like the tails left on. (Thais are also partial to the heads, but these are not so acceptable to the foreign palate.)

Ingredients Prawns Garlic, chopped Onions, diced Tomatoes, peeled and diced Olive oil Bread crumbs White wine Lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste Chopped coriander garnish Mozzarella cheese grated

Serves 4 24 large 2 cloves ½ cup 2 large 2 tbspns ½ cup ½ cup 2 tspns ½ cup

Cooking Method In the wok, sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until golden. Add the prawns and sauté for two minutes, then add white wine, tomatoes and lemon juice and sauté for five more minutes, stirring constantly. Add salt and pepper to taste, add bread crumbs and cheese and sauté for two more minutes. Serve over a bed of rice or noodles and sprinkle with the chopped coriander.

Verstappen wins Austrian GP to end Mercedes’ unbeaten streak

Eric Willemsen Spielberg, Austria (AP) — Max Verstappen showed off his risky racing style last Sunday to win the Austrian Grand Prix for a second straight year and end Mercedes’ unbeaten streak this season. Chasing the leading trio, the Red Bull driver used all of his overtaking skills to get past Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas in the closing stages of the race before passing leader Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari with just two of the 71 laps to go. However, Verstappen had to wait more than three hours after the race to get his win confirmed. Race stewards investigated the Dutchman’s pass of Leclerc as the wheels of both cars touched in a duel full of excitement which was often lacking in recent F1 races. Leclerc held off an attempt by Verstappen in lap 68, but failed to do it again the next lap. The cars came out of Turn 3 side-by-side when their wheels bumped, with
