On September 12, Human Help Network Foundation Thailand Director Radchada Chomjinda was invited to a National Social Welfare Promotion Commission meeting in Chonburi where she learned the foundation was to receive an award from them for outstanding social activity.

The awards ceremony will be held in October.

Radchada said that this will be the 3rd award they’ve received in the past 2 years, starting with the 2018 Prachabodee award for outstanding organization in social welfare, and the 2018 Prof. Pakorn Angsusing award for outstanding voluntary social worker.

This has resulted in roads being dug up, holes left with barriers, and lanes closed in a patchwork of projects that leaves no area free of congestion.

The defendants were convicted on charges of sedition, illegal assembly, damaging property and trespassing.

Wednesday’s ruling reversed the conviction of a 13th defendant.

Police bring accused murderer to reenact Tee Lai Khopai shooting Boonlua Chatree

Such inbreeding “affects their well-being, resulting in disabilities and weakened health condition,” he said at a news conference. “And when they have weakened genetic traits, they also have problems with their immune system as well.”

The temple in the western province of Kanchanaburi served for more than a decade as a de facto zoo where tourists could feed tigers and pose for photos with them, despite concerns about possible mistreatment and suspicions of wildlife trafficking.

Police found tiger skins and teeth and at least 1,500 amulets made from tiger bones when they raided the temple, as well as 60 cub carcasses

stuffed in freezers and in formaldehyde in jars.

Tiger parts, such as ground bones, are popular as traditional medicine in Asia. Tiger hides can sell for tens of thousands of dollars in China.

There are estimated to be more than 1,000 tigers in captivity in Thailand, but only about 200 in the wild out of a global wild population of about 4,000.

Patarapol said Thai authorities would do their best to care for the surviving rescued tigers.

“We are mobilizing team members, increasing our readiness and adjusting our plan,” he said. “We will provide the best care possible.”

Pattaya Police say they are strictly enforcing the operating times of entertainment establishments following the fatal shooting of a teenager at an after-hours drinking den in the early hours of Sept. 11.

Government rolls out G-Wallet to boost domestic tourism Jetsada Homklin Prime Minister Prayut Chano-cha’s government is attempting to stimulate the economy and boost domestic tourism by giving away 1,000 baht to the first 10 million Thais who sign up for their “Taste and Shop Project”.

The funds will come in the form of an electronic G-Wallet and must be spent on local tourism.

The 1,000 baht will be distributed electronically through Krung Thai Bank’s wallet app and cannot be exchanged for cash.

Registration opens Sept. 21.

The project includes a cash back promotion of 15%, not to exceed 4,500 baht, to topup the g-wallet account to pay for food and beverages, accommodation or local purchases. OTOP products, Community Enterprise Products, THAIDEN Shop, and Thong Fah Pracharath Shop are being promoted for this project.

New pet control measures now in effect All dogs and cats must now be registered according to a new ordinance passed by the city council and signed into law by both the mayor and governor.

The law was signed Sept. 2 and came into effect 7 days later on Sept. 9. That would mean owners have until Sept. 9, 2020 to register their pets. Those who don’t face stiff fines.

Other edicts laid out in the new law include loose or unattended cats and dogs are banned from public areas, and on Pattaya North Road from Sukhumvit Road to the Dolphin Roundabout.

Nothing in the law states specifically how this will apply to strays.

Curiously, the law also puts

a limit on pet ownership.

People living in an area of 18 sq.wa or less are not allowed to have more than 2 dogs and/or 3 cats, unless the pet owner obtains permission from their local pet control officer.

However, people who already are over the limit can be grandfathered in and don’t need further permission. These owners still must register their animals, as well as show proof the animals have been sterilized to control their numbers.

Puppies and kittens must be registered within 120 days of their birth and must be vaccinated for rabies.

Pet owners must provide a proper, hygienic living space for their cats and dogs

and must control their pets to keep them from causing trouble and from harming neighbors.

When taken for walks, pets must always wear their registration tags and/or owners must produce their registration

when asked by authorities.

Owners are required to immediately eliminate dung or sewage from dogs and cats in houses, public areas, and other places.

Violators face up to a 10,000 baht fine. (PCPR)

The Hand to Hand Foundation and friends recently attempted to set a world record for the longest line of pencils.

Six sponsored bungy jumps, including one taken by Margie Granger, raised 34,000 baht. A rabbit poo raffle was held, too.

Pope Francis to visit Thailand Nov. 20-23 Nannapat Purod Bangkok (AP) — Pope Francis will visit Thailand and Japan in November in a visit expected to highlight his call for complete nuclear disarmament and honor the small Catholic communities in each country.

The Vatican confirmed the Nov. 19-26 trip, and its diplomatic representative in Thailand, Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam, announced the Thai stop on Friday.

Francis will be in Thailand on Nov. 20-23 before heading to Japan, where government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said he would meet with the emperor.

It will be Francis’ fourth trip to Asia, where he has already visited South Korea, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The last pope to visit Japan was the late Saint Pope John Paul II in 1981. He was also the last pope to visit Thailand, in 1984.

During his official visit to Thailand, Francis will preside at religious ceremonies and pay pastoral visits to

by U.S. atomic bombs at the end of World War II. Francis has frequently spoken out about the risk of nuclear war, most emphatically during a 2017 disarmament conference at the Vatican where he signaled a shift in church teaching about nuclear deterrence.

In that speech to Nobel laureates, NATO officials and diplomats, he warned that the Cold War-era strategy of

deterrence was no longer viable and urged instead complete nuclear disarmament.

“If we . . . take into account the risk of an accidental detonation as a result of error of any kind, the threat of (nuclear weapons’) use, as well as their very possession, is to be firmly condemned,” he said.

His comments marked a shift, given previous popes including St. John Paul II, had called for the abolition of nuclear weapons but had said the stockpiling of them could be morally acceptable as a form of deterrence.

Police uncover potential infant trade on Facebook

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has instructed the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) to look into a Facebook page which apparently trades infants from unwanted pregnancies.

Pol Lt Gen Piya Uthayo, RTP Assistant Commissioner General, disclosed that information on the adoption of newborn babies with a price, gender and pictures appears on the Facebook page in question. He confirmed that forwarding or commenting on the post may be punishable under the law and the RTP has instructed the TCSD to investigate the case.

Initially, it was found that many people had commented on the post expressing their disapproval of the alleged infant trade, saying male infants may be raised to become slaves and female infants may be raised for prostitution.

TCSD Deputy Chief, Pol Col Siriwat Dephau, said that from the initial investigation it isn’t clear if it is a crime under the Computer Act or not. This and other matters will be examined, while authorities say they believe that there may be many other pages also trading infants. The Facebook page has been publishing pictures of infants since August. It is also necessary to determine whether a person who adopts such an infant is considered guilty of any crime.

Currently, the Social Assistance Center is trying to contact a person who adopted an infant in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Facebook tightens political ad rules, but leaves loopholes Barbara Ortutay San Francisco (AP) — Facebook is tightening its rules around political advertising ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, acknowledging previous misuse. But it’s not clear if it will be enough to stop bad actors from abusing its system.

The changes include a tightened verification process that will require anyone wanting to run ads pertaining to elections, politics or big social issues like guns and immigration to confirm their identity and prove they are in the U.S. Beginning in midSeptember, such advertisers confirm their group’s identity using their organization’s tax identification number or other government ID. The verified group name will be listed on the “paid for by” disclaimers that disclose the backers of ads.

Facebook says it will verify this information against government records and will note in the disclaimer for confirmed ads that they’re placed by a “confirmed organization.”

That process won’t apply to everyone, as Facebook says it would bar some smaller but legitimate groups from advertising. But a loophole that will allow small grassroots groups and local politicians to run political ads could also continue to allow bad actors to take advantage of the process.

Advertisers who don’t have tax ID numbers, government websites or registrations with the Federal Election Commission will still be able to post ads by providing an address, verifiable phone number, business email and website. These advertisers won’t get a “confirmed” designation. Previously, only a U.S. address was required.

But it’s not inconceivable that bad actors will find a way to spoof phone numbers and email addresses.

“We’ve acknowledged that these tools will not be perfect,”

Sarah Schiff, a Facebook product manager, said in an email. “But we are committed to making it more difficult for bad actors to misuse and abuse our platform” without penalizing smaller organizations.

Schiff also reiterated the company’s calls for regulation of online political advertising. Critics have said that Facebook’s attempts at self-regulation are merely a way for the company to preempt stricter government crackdowns.

Last month, Facebook was ordered to pay a $5 billion fine to the Federal Trade Commission over privacy violations.

It also faces a series of other investigations into its privacy practices in Europe and across the U.S., in addition to new investigations into its allegedly anticompetitive behavior, such as the social network’s habit of buying would-be rivals like Instagram and blatantly duplicating features introduced by competing services.

While the company has beefed up its fight against misinformation and coordinated attacks by malicious nation-states, the same can be said for those trying to game its systems. After revelations that that Russians bankrolled thousands of fake political ads during the 2016 elections, Facebook and other social networks faced intense pressure to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

In late 2017, Facebook said it will verify political ad buyers by requiring them to confirm their names and locations, the latter by receiving a postcard with a confirmation code at a U.S. address. Page administrators also had to be verified.

But critics said the rules were easy to evade. Last fall, for instance, Vice News was able to place ads on behalf of the likes of Vice President Mike Pence and the Islamic State, which were all approved by Facebook.

India loses touch with lander on its final approach to moon Aijaz Rahi & Sheikh Saaliq Bangalore, India (AP) — India’s space agency said it lost touch with its Vikram lunar lander on Saturday, Sept. 7, as it made its final approach to the moon’s South Pole to deploy a rover to search for signs of water.

The fate of the lander — whether it crashed or landed — wasn’t immediately known.

A successful landing would have made India just the fourth country to land a vessel on the lunar surface, and only the third to operate a robotic rover there.

The space agency said the lander’s descent was normal until 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the lunar surface.

“Let us hope for the best,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was at Mission Control in the southern city of Bangalore.

The mission lifted off on July 22 from the Satish Dhawan space center in Sriharikota, an island off the coast of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

After its launch, Chandrayaan-2 spent several weeks making its way toward the moon, ultimately entering lunar orbit on Aug. 20.

On Sept. 2, Vikram separated from the mission’s orbiter, and the lander began a series of braking maneuvers to lower its orbit and ready itself for landing.

Only three nations — the United States, the former Soviet Union and China — have landed a spacecraft on the moon.

Last January, China achieved the first landing on the far side of the moon. In April, an Israeli spacecraft attempting to land crashed moments before touchdown.

Apple apologizes for use of contractors to eavesdrop on Siri Michael Liedtke San Francisco (AP) — Apple is apologizing for allowing outsiders to listen to snippets of people’s recorded conversations with its digital assistant Siri, a practice that undermined its attempts to position itself as a trusted steward of privacy.

As part of the apology, Apple reiterated an earlier pledge to stop keeping audio recorded through Siri unless consumers give their permission.

When permission is granted, Apple said only its own employees will be allowed to review audio to help improve the service.

Previously, the company

hired contractors to listen to some recordings.

“We realize we haven’t been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologize,” Apple said.

Apple would not say how it will seek permission. In the past, the Cupertino, California, company has typically requested permissions through prompts during software update installations.

In recent months, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple have all acknowledged that people have been reviewing users’ interactions with artificial intelligence assistants in order to improve the services. But users aren’t typically aware that humans and not just

computers are reviewing audio.

The use of humans to listen to audio recordings is particularly troubling to privacy experts because it increases the chances that a rogue employee or contractor could leak details of what is being said, including parts of sensitive conversations.

The backlash to the industry practice prompted Facebook and Google to stop relying on people to transcribe recorded conversations. Amazon is continuing the practice unless users of its digital assistant Alexa explicitly demand that humans be blocked from listening.

Microsoft also is still doing it, too, contending it has adequate privacy safeguards in

place for the Cortana digital assistant.

Apple intends to continue to rely upon computer-generated transcripts of what’s being said to Siri as part of effort to improve services, even if a user hasn’t explicitly granted permission, or opted in.

Unlike Facebook, Google and Amazon, which track what people are doing and where they are going to sell ads and merchandise, Apple has conspicuously emphasized that that it has no interest in peering into its customers’ lives.

CEO Tim Cook repeatedly has declared the company’s belief that “privacy is a fundamental human right,” a phrase that cropped up again in Apple’s apology.

The hewers of stone and drawers of water With the current push for women’s health clinics and practitioners, it is easy for men to feel left out. After all, you’ve no uterus to become cancerous, and although you do have vestigial breasts and it is theoretically possible to get breast cancer, I don’t suggest you go looking for breast lumps every month after your non-existent periods.

However, there are some specific male areas, and these centralize around the genito-urinary systems. In the medical business, Urologists are sometimes called the hewers of stone and drawers of water, because much of their work deals with kidney stones and assisting men to be able to pass water adequately. We men do suffer at times, it’s not only the ladies who have ‘specific’ problems!

Your urinary system is a remarkable collection of organs, beginning with the kidney, the “super filter”. The kidney filters the blood and allows the important stuff like blood cells and nutrients to continue waltzing around your circulation, but taking out the nasties, and at the same time helping balance the acidity/alkalinity of the body. Clever little organs, the kidneys!

To keep your kidneys in top shape does not require special kidney exercises, you will be pleased to know. In fact, there is nothing you can do ‘physically’ to make the

kidneys perform, but fortunately there are some things you can do to keep them in top condition.

The first is to drink plenty of water every day. And by ‘water’, I mean the plain and simple H2O style water, not the stuff that has been mixed with hops, distilled with grain or left to age in oak casks. Making the kidneys exercise, to filter and regulate the circulating blood volume, is simply carried out by drinking several liters of water every day.

Yes, it is that easy. On your desk at work keep a glass of cold water beside you and empty it every 30 minutes. Into your gut, not the sink.

The advantages you get from this are enormous. First off, you have immediately lowered the chances of forming kidney stones, a potentially dangerous (and always painful) condition. Being a card carrying coward, I have always preferred the drinking water option to the lying in bed groaning with pain alternative. In fact, around 15 percent of people will experience stones in their lifetime (especially in the hot climates) and men outnumber women between two to three times. We also know that if you do not change your lifestyle, you are very likely to develop another stone within two years after the first episode. We men do suffer at times, it’s not only the ladies who have ‘specific’ problems!

The kidneys drain to the bladder by two tubes called Ureters. These do not do much, other than connect the kidney to the collecting vessel (bladder). However, if a piece of stone gets stuck, you will soon know about it.

Renal colic sorts out the men from the boys! Ultimate pain!

Down on your knees type pain.

From the bladder, the urine gets introduced to the outside world by another tube called the Urethra. This is short in ladies and is the reason that women get Cystitis (bladder infections). It is longer in the men folk, allowing us to stand up to pee and become obsessed with how long or short it really is. After the age of 40 give up the ‘Who can pee the highest’ competitions.

However, we chaps have another problem in that region, as far as getting the urine from the bladder to the far wall of the urinal. This is called the Prostate, and it encircles the Urethra and when enlarged, closes down the internal diameter of the pee tube. This makes it difficult to pass water and you dribble on your shoes. The prostate can also become cancerous, an even less pleasant state of affairs. We men do suffer at times, it’s not only the ladies who have ‘specific’ problems!

Yes, you can have a check-up for this area too. Just ask to see the hewers of stone and drawers of water!

US health officials report new vaping deaths, repeat warning cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit.

But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. And they fear that kids who might never have picked up cigarettes are taking up vaping.

Mike Stobbe New York (AP) — U.S. health officials have again urged people to stop vaping until they figure out why some are coming down with serious breathing illnesses.

Officials have identified about 450 possible cases, including as many as five deaths, in 33 states. The count includes newly reported deaths in California, Indiana and Minnesota.

No single vaping device, liquid or ingredient has been tied to all the illnesses, officials said. Many of the sickened — but not all — were people who said they had been vaping THC, the chemical that gives marijuana its high. Many are teens.

Health officials have only been counting certain lung illnesses in which the person had vaped within three months.

Doctors say the illnesses resemble an inhalation injury, with the body apparently reacting to a caustic substance that someone breathed in.

Symptoms have included shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting.

The illnesses have all surfaced this year, and the number has been growing quickly in the last month as more states have begun investigations. A week ago, U.S. officials pegged the number at 215 possible cases in 25 states.

It’s unclear whether such illnesses were happening before this year.

“We’re all wondering if this is new or just newly recognized,” Dr. Dana MeaneyDelman of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters Friday.

An Illinois health official, Dr. Jennifer Layden, said officials there don’t know when such illnesses first began, but she said there has been a marked increase since spring.

Deaths previously were reported in Illinois and Oregon.

Indiana officials said the person who died there was an adult, but they didn’t say when it happened or release other details. Health officials in Los Angeles said they were investigating a vaping death as well. And Minnesota health officials said that state’s first known vapingrelated death was a person over 65 years with a history of lung problems who had vaped illicit THC products and died in August.

Recent attention has been focused on devices, liquids, refill pods and cartridges that are not sold in stores.

New York State has focused its investigation on an ingredient called Vitamin E acetate, which has been used to thicken marijuana vape juice but is considered dangerous if heated and inhaled. State investigators have found the substance in 13 cartridges collected from eight patients.

In several cases, the ingredient made up more than half of the liquid in the cartridge.

CDC officials said they are looking at several ingredients, including Vitamin E acetate. But Meaney-Delman added that no single factor has been seen in every case.

Also Friday, the New England Journal of Medicine released a series of articles that give medical details about cases reported in Illinois, Wisconsin and Utah.

An article on 53 illnesses in Illinois and Wisconsin

noted that nearly one-fifth of the cases were people who said they vaped nicotine and not anything that contained THC or CBD oil.

For that reason, doctors and health officials are continuing to suggest people stay away from all vaping products until the investigation establishes exactly what’s at the root of the illnesses.

Meaney-Delman said avoiding vaping is “the primary means of preventing this severe lung disease.”

It’s not yet clear what impact the recent illnesses are having on vaping rates, but some health officials are hoping more Americans will become wary.

There’s been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine.

The Czar and Liverpool An unfortunate misprint on the Thai disc cover of the new Netflix mini-series “The Last Czars”. The wording has come out as “The Last Zcars”. Older Brits will remember that Zcars was a 1960s TV series about the police in Kirkby, a suburb of Liverpool. The Netflix series has some other unfortunate errors. There’s a photograph of Moscow’s Red Square in 1905 which clearly shows Lenin’s completed tomb.

But he died in 1924.

Not a Drop to Drink In case you are wondering why so many Pattaya main roads have recently suffered from single lane traffic, or no lanes at all, you can blame the water. City Hall apparently received a government grant, time-limited as usual, to install new water pipes across parts of the downtown area.

Following so quickly on the earlier road chaos to bury overhead wires, the last thing expected was another dose.

Family Visa Query A British farang, aged 38, is asking what long visa he can obtain as he is the father of a Thai baby but he’s not married to the Thai mother. He can apply for a non-immigrant “O” family visa based on his responsibilities to the baby. It is annually renewable. He asks if this visa comes automatically with a work permit as he needs to earn cash to cover his commitments. Sadly, no. To obtain a work permit he would need to be offered a job or to make an investment in a company.

Where is the hero?

My daughter continues to enjoy taking photographs (as well as the usual selfies).

For her, with me rather handy, this means very personal one on one tuition. It also means that I can see immediately what has to be done to improve her skills.

One catch-cry of mine has been “fill the frame” and finally she is starting to understand what is meant by this. The shots which precipitated this were a gammon steak and egg. The first shot showed the table, coffee cups and serviettes.

Input by the photographer – nil. After admonishment to fill the frame, the second shot

was much better, but there were still extraneous items along with the gammon plate. The third shot concentrated on the gammon plate and very little else, and daughter could see immediately that she had taken a photograph with some impact. It had a “hero” and that was the gammon steak and egg.

For impact, she finally got there. The “hero” was the gammon almost filling the frame, leaving nothing to distract from the reason for the shot.

The next item she was shown was that her hero deserved more than one shot. By moving the platter with the gammon, she could keep it filling the frame, but getting different views, and different light and shadows from the cafe window.

All good photographs follow the rules of good composition. The best known one of these is the Rule of

Dear Hillary, With all these men writing to you to say how they have been tricked or cheated but not everyone has a hard-luck story. Certainly there are differences between Thai women and European/American women, but that is part of their charm. There are also differences in culture, so to say that looking after sick or needy relatives is an imposition means that the man does not understand the “family” culture here, as opposed to the selfish culture of “me first” above everything else, which is the usual situation in the west. Certainly the relatives stay with us when they are in town, but it is a small price to pay. Sure, there are societal differences as this is not America, this is Amazing Thailand. Fitting in as you have done is very much better than trying to make the women and the customs conform to your western ways. By the same token, you should carefully choose your life’s mate, slowly and thoughtfully, just as you would do when looking for a mate in your own countries. Thirds, where you position the subject of the photo (that’s the hero) at the intersection of one third from the top or bottom of the viewfinder and one third in from the right or left side of the viewfinder. Look where the egg is positioned!

By just placing your subject off-center immediately drags your shot out of the “ordinary” basket. The technocrats called it the “Rule of Thirds”, but even just try putting the subjects off-center. While still on the Rule of Thirds, don’t have the horizon slap bang in the center of the picture either. Put it one third from the top or one third from the bottom. As a rough rule of thumb, if the sky is interesting put more of it in the picture, but if it is featureless blue or grey include less of it. Simple!

With some cameras where you can make a grid pattern on the viewing screen from the menu, such as on the

DMC FZ series Lumix, it makes it even easier to position the subject. With the vertical lines, you will soon see if you have the subject vertical, and for horizontal subjects incorporating the horizon, you can also make sure it is level. This composition is something you can do in the camera as you take the shot. It does mean that you look critically through the viewfinder and position the subject correctly.

Now, that is not the only

strong and lasting union, something many of you appear not to have understood.

Dear John, No, my Petal, Thai women are not just interested in money. For example, I am also interested in chocolates and champagne. All women, are interested in finding a mate who can support them and their children (and the family in Thailand). Why should any woman be interested in marrying a pauper? Would you? There are not too many couples you could call Romeo and Juliette in the world, but there are thousands of successful marriages, which exist for the mutual benefit of both parties. I am not saying that ‘romance’ is dead, but likewise a union based on an unreal expectation is also headed for the scrap heap. If you and your lady are happy as you are, with the money you have or haven’t got, then just enjoy life and don’t spend time worrying about what other people say in bars.

Dear Hillary, There’s been some letters to you about the Kid in the Candy store. As was pointed out, some foreigners never get over the candy store phase, but I think you will find that this is because they haven’t found the girl they really “clicked” with, so rather than become a crotchety old thing (I’m not

While post-production cropping to fill the frame can be done, it is better to do it in the camera beforehand.

You can do this with postproduction ‘edit suites’ or even a good Photoshop style program, where you actually do just the same as we used to with two Lshaped pieces of card, but with electronics. Call up your photo on the computer screen and with the cropping tools you can move them around until you feel you have the correct (most pleasing) crop. And fill the frame.

So this week the messages were simple. Remember to fill the frame to give your photos more impact, so walk in closer. Remember to position the subject at the intersection of thirds, and learn how to visualize the crop for dramatic effect and try to do this in the camera viewfinder.

That will improve your shots immeasurably.

I was sitting on my own in the bar and I didn’t want to listen to the usual inane chatter that the bar girls carry on with, so I started to talk to the service girl and she seemed a nice enough lady, so I bought her a couple of drinks, but then went home. The next day she rolls up at my office with some flowers for me! I was so embarrassed, as all my work mates were laughing. I asked one of the girls to find out what she wanted, but all they said was that the lady liked me. What do I do with this? The last thing I need is unwanted visits.

PCEC learns what you can do about aging skin Dr. Vajarakorn Tongsuk, M.D., with the able assistance of his son, Jack, with Pattaya Royal Beauty Clinic, spoke to the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) on Sunday, September 1. Their topic was “What happens to your skin as you age and what you can do about it”. Jack, who is well versed in his father’s practice, spoke first covering much of the topic and then turned it over to his father, Dr. Tongsuk, to complete the presentation.

Dr. Tongsuk is a plastic surgeon with over 30 years of surgical experience. In addition to the Clinic, he is also in practice at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in 1977 and specialization from the Thai Board of General Surgery in 1987, Thai Board of Plastic Surgery in 1993, and Thai Board of Family Medicine in 2002. From 1979 to 1989 he was a general surgeon at Abhakornkiartiwong

Hospital (Sattahip Naval Base) and from 1989 to 2007; he was Head of Surgery Division at Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital (Sriracha).

His present positions as Plastic Surgeon with Pattaya Royal Beauty Clinic began in 2008 and with Bangkok Hospital Pattaya in 2013.

He has attended several conferences, symposiums, courses, etc., and is a member of The Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons of Thailand, The Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand, and The Association of Military Surgeons of Thailand.

Jack broke the talk down into four categories, (1) the history of plastic surgery in general, (2) the definition of Botox, uses and effects, (3) general skin treatments, and (4) the effects of gravity and plastic surgery solutions.

years younger. In the 20th century, the emphasis turned to gender changes and implants.

Most recently plastic surgery has been used to make the patient more handsome or beautiful. With this last goal in mind, the remainder of the talk focused on the other 3 categories, Botox treatments, skin treatments and overcoming the effects of gravity through face lifting surgeries.

Jack pointed out that Botox is essentially an injection technique that fills out the skin to remove wrinkles and semi paralyzes the muscles to reduce those facial movements that create them. Short term Botox injection treatments for 3 to 6 months duration are safe and effective, but he cautioned that longer term fillers can be much more dangerous.

General skin treatments focus on skin blemishes which are mostly dealt with lasers and can be quite effective in improving facial looks. As with the Botox presentation, he showed several before and after pictures to illustrate the effect.

The effects of gravity are drooping eye lids, sagging cheeks, and facial tissue in general are the main focus of Dr. Tongsuk’s practice and consequently were the main points during the presentation. Three different surgeries were mentioned that can be done to offset the facial effects caused by gravity. These are eyelifts, upper and lower face lifts.

Recent improvements in procedures for these operations have reduced operating times from upwards of 5 hours to around an hour or less using the mini-facelift.

Along with the reduced operating time, the surgery can now be done without the need for a hospital visit and with a choice of local

or general anesthesia.

Dr. Tongsuk took the stage and provided more information on how he performed these surgeries and their benefit. Further, the mini-facelift has much less overall risk. He mentioned that eyelift surgeries may run about 25,000 baht and the new shortened, less evasive ‘mini-facelift’ about 55,000 baht.

An outrageous Journey with the Rich and Famous Stuart Ward, currently a freelance consultant for Public Relations and Communications, spoke to the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) at their Sunday, September 8, meeting. His presentation was about his life experiences and the people he met over his long career in politics, music, show businesses; a who’s who of famous people from many walks of life around the world over the last 50 years.

Stuart was born and brought

up in E x e t e r, E n g l a n d , UK, moving to Sweden with Price Waterhouse after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in the City of London in 1973. He found that the music and entertainment industry was more to his liking and leaving the accounting/auditing profession, he then worked for more than 25 years in this industry in Sweden, his second home. During those 25 years he was a radio DJ and producer, TV host, record

company manager and managing director of a music export trade organization.

Stuart was managing director of the Polar Music Prize, created by Stig Anderson, who put ABBA together, and presented every year by H.M. the King of Sweden.

He moved to Thailand in August 2004 and until the end of October 2016, he was controller at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) or the Development Cooperation Section of the E m b a s s y o f Sweden in Bangkok. He also performed various other duties during his 12 years at the Embassy.

Before retiring on 31st May this year, Stuart spent some months as finances & operations

administrator at the Manushya Foundation after which he acted for 14 months as assistant to the president for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability at the Mechai Viravaidya Foundation.

Thus, he entitled his topic as, “From Clint Eastwood through Royalty to Khun Mechai (Mr. Condom). My Outrageous Journey with the Rich and Famous.”

Stuart shared tales of the stars that he has met, interviewed, performed with, worked with, and in some cases became good friends with. He also shared sound bites from his previous radio show in Sweden including sounds bites from well known comedians and musical

performers he has interviewed during his career.

To name only a few of many people he spoke about were Clint Eastwood, Burt Bacharach, Laura Branigan, Robert Plant, Amy Grant, Elaine Page, Oliver Stone, Leslie Nielson and the list goes on and on. He provided his PCEC audience with a nostalgic photo album presentation of his personal interactions with the stars.

Attempting to cover a lifetime of moments in about an hour-long presentation seemingly without taking a breath. During this outrageous journey through life, Stuart met an extraordinary number of rich and famous people.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Stuart answered several questions from the audience. When asked who was the funniest celebrity he ever met was, he answered John Cleese (from Monty Python) and Mel Brooks, but that there are many others that make it difficult to pick just one.

Another question he was asked was, who was the most difficult person he ever had to interview? Stuart declined to say any names, but the rock-n-roll musicians on their way up he felt were the most difficult. Whereas the most wonderful and easy to

interview were artists that were already famous, successful, and established as they were comfortable with their stardom. Generally speaking, he considered ninety-nine-point nine percent of the people he has interviewed were really nice people and humble as well.

Stuart felt his natural skill allowed those he interviewed, including the famous, to relax and open up on camera.

This included the fact that he was not star struck when talking with those that were well known artists; thus, making them feel comfortable as if holding a conversation with a friend instead of an interview.

His presentation was as promised, a really amazing journey with the rich and famous. Stuart is planning on using this and other material to write a book in the future about his experiences.

Afterward, MC Ron Hunter brought everyone up to date on upcoming club and other Pattaya events of interest.

Home supply giant Youths rewarded for artistic skills in promoting Chonburi tourism Boonthavorn opens in Sattahip Jetsada Homklin

Winners received trophies and scholarships from Minister of Culture Itthiphol Kunplome.

Jetsada Homklin Students from around the country were awarded for their artistic skills in the second “Chonburi nice place to visit” painting contest sponsored by the Association of Chonburi Attractions.

Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome was on hand to present the awards Sept. 6 at Central Festival Pattaya Beach.

956 students took part in the contest, which was divided into 3 categories.

Pitichanan Ruthraksa from Pratomsuksa Thammasat School in Pathum Thani won the under 9s, while Kinnaree Jino from Ban Phasak School in Chiang Mai was best of all the 10-12 year olds, and Watchara Thongsongkarm from Somkidjitwittaya School in Chonburi was tops in the 13-15 category.

Winners received trophies and scholarships from the Minister of Culture.

Another 200 awards were presented for children’s morale.

Miss Titipat Siranattasrikul, president of the Association of Chonburi Attractions, said the contest was held to promote youths studying in primary, secondary, and high school to present their art talents, use their free time wisely, and create a good image of tourism of the country and Chonburi.

Judging was done by members of the Association of Chonburi Attractions, representatives from Pattaya Culture Council, and the Pattaya Independent Artists Group.

Clock works Do you remember that song called My Grandfather’s Clock? I bet you didn’t know that it was written back in 1876. You may recall that the song was about a clock which worked for ninety years but stopped for good when its grandfather owner breathed his last. The song was most famously recorded by Johnny Cash and remained a standard for years in Britain and America. The composer, one Henry Clay Work was selftaught and also wrote the rather more jubilant Marching through Georgia.

I suppose one of the other best-known popular pieces of music about clocks is Leroy Anderson’s number called The Syncopated Clock which he wrote in 1945 while serving with the U.S. Army. Although a gifted linguist (he was fluent in nine languages) he made his name in light music, notably with simple but effective pieces like Blue Tango, The Typewriter and Sleigh Ride. Even so, his catchy tunes have the habit of becoming irritatingly lodged in the memory in the same way that bits of chicken get stuck between the back teeth.

Prokofiev imitated the sound of a clock to strike midnight in his ballet Cinderella and Kodály creates an image of an elaborate musical clock in his opera Háry Janos. At one point in the Richard Strauss opera Der Rosenkavalier, there are thirteen strikes of the clock in the orchestra, created by using a celesta and two harps.

The beginning of the second movement in Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony sounds as though it’s imitating something mechanical. There’s a widespread belief that the effect is supposed to be an imitation of a metronome,

one of which had recently been produced by Beethoven’s friend Johann Maelzel. But no one really knows for sure.

In 1998, the British composer Harrison Birtwistle wrote a set of five piano pieces called Harrison’s Clocks, challenging for both performer and audience alike. The work was inspired by Dava Sobel’s short book Longitude which tells the fascinating story of the eighteenth-century English clockmaker John Harrison and his mission to build an accurate chronometer for use at sea.

Einar Englund’s ravishing Fourth Symphony has a sizzling second movement which includes many clocklike sounds of chiming bells, frenetic ticking and imitations of ponderous clockwork mechanisms. It’s a shame that the music of this extraordinary Finnish composer is so rarely performed.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937): L’heure Espagnole.

Glyndebourne Festival, London Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Sian

Edwards. (Duration: 52:49; Video: 360p) This jolly one-act opera is dominated by clocks and set in 18th century Spain. It’s a comedy involving a desperately oversexed Spanish woman arranging secret assignations with her various lovers, while her husband innocently occupies himself with clockwork mechanisms and services the municipal clocks in the town of Toledo.

L’heure Espagnole (“Spanish Time”) was first performed at the Paris Opéra-Comique May 1911 and Maurice Ravel created a Spanish flavour by using ideas from traditional Spanish dances. It was produced in Britain for the first time at Covent Garden in 1919 and in the following year it was seen in Chicago and New York.

The piece sometimes descends into pure farce in which various characters are obliged to hide in clocks and it has become one of the most popular operas of the twentieth century. This

Glyndebourne production dates from 1987 and it’s sung in the original French. However, there are also English subtitles which might be useful if your French is a bit rusty.

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Symphony No.101 (“The Clock”). Mito Chamber Orchestra cond. Jun Märkl (Duration: 28:41; Video: 360p) The Austrian composer Joseph Haydn wrote at least 104 symphonies and the so-called “London” symphonies are perhaps his best-known. They date from between 1791 and 1795 and as you may have guessed, were intended for performance in London.

They’re in the usual four movements and apart from No 95 they all have a slow introduction to the first movement, one of Haydn’s personal trade-marks.

Symphony No 101 was premiered in March 1794 and its nickname “The Clock” comes from the

second movement (at 07:55) in which a distinct ticking sound dominates the movement. Haydn’s music was hugely popular in London at the time and the audience was wildly enthusiastic. The reporter for the London newspaper “The Morning Chronicle” waxed lyrical: “As usual the most delicious part of the entertainment was a new symphony by Haydn; the inexhaustible, the wonderful, the sublime Haydn! The first two movements were encored and the character that pervaded the whole composition was heartfelt joy.”

The symphony proved so successful that a second performance was arranged a week later. It is indeed a wonderful composition which has stood the test of time and well over two hundred years later it remains one of Haydn’s most popular works. This Japanese orchestra gives a fine performance and the symphony is worth hearing all the way through, if that is, you’re not watching the clock.

Graff and his team have assembled interviews from 480 people who share their terrifying and often inspirational memories of the day when hijackers used two passenger planes as weapons to topple the twin towers of the World Trade Center and another to attack the Pentagon. A fourth hijacked plane went down in flames when heroic passengers fought back to bring it down in rural Pennsylvania before it could strike another high-profile target, probably in Washington.

The technique of letting the witnesses tell the story does a remarkable job of bringing to life the horrific day in a way that a writer’s narrative would have a hard time matching.

The day starts with people going through their morning routines before work, admiring the spectacular September day and then coming to the realization, often haltingly,

that this would be the most frightening day of their lives.

People were just settling in for the workday or just arriving at work when a plane hijacked from Boston crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m.

Most people are aware of the events that followed, but what has faded from memory over the years are the dramatic details, like the emotional accounts of people telling their loved ones that they were trapped in the upper floors of the towers or on hijacked planes, the gradual realization that the towers had been hit by passenger jets, the eventual crashing of those towers and the suffocating clouds of dust that made it impossible to breathe and sent legions of New Yorkers fleeing through the streets like a scene from a sci-fi movie, and the incredibly courageous decision to overpower the hijackers and bring down United 93 over Pennsylvania.

The oral history details the decisions of the President George W. Bush administration on how to deal with a terror attack of unknown dimensions, the deliberations of passengers on United 93 to fight back, the frantic phone calls to loved ones trapped in the towers and planes, the people leaping from dozens of floors up to their death and, throughout, the heroism and humanity of all involved, especially the rescue workers. It makes for a gripping read. (AP)

In Tarantino’s latest, a radiant Hollywood fable Jake Coyle Los Angeles (AP) - Quentin Tarantino has, for a while now, been reminding us what’s so great about movies — or at least, what he thinks is so great about them.

He’s made an old-fashioned double-feature (“Death Proof,” of “Grindhouse”), resurrected the wide-screen format of 70mm Ultra Panavision (“The Hateful Eight”) and generally presided as the pre-eminent Bmovie evangelist for a generation. The power and thrill of exploitation movies, he has earnestly espoused, can conquer all evils — or at least slavery (“Django Unchained”) and the Nazis (“Inglourious Basterds”).

But “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” set in 1969 Los Angeles, is Tarantino’s most affectionate and poignant ode yet to the movie business. It’s a breezy, woozy Hollywood fable that luxuriates in the simple pleasures of the movies and the colorful swirl of the Dream Factory’s backlot. Some pleasures are nostalgic, and some — like driving down Sunset Boulevard or martinis at Musso & Frank — are everlasting.

Here, movie love feels contagious, like something in the air. In one of the film’s best scenes, Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate explains at a theater’s ticket office that she’s in the movie, the newly released caper “The Wrecking Crew,”

(“I’m the klutz!” she says cheerfully). Inside, she giggles with delight at seeing herself on the big screen, giddily mimicking her character’s martial-arts moves and watching to see if the audience laughs at one of her lines. (They do.)

The pleasures in “Once Upon a Time” are also ours.

Tarantino has lowered his typically feverish temperature to a warming simmer, bathing us in the golden California light and the movie-star glow of his leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. They spend copious amounts of time driving through the Hollywood Hills in a creamy Coupe de Ville, riding along like Butch and Sundance and just as nice to look at.

DiCaprio is Rick Dalton, a Burt Reynolds-type actor of TV Westerns (his claim to fame is the ’50s hit “Bounty Law”) whose career is stalling. Pitt is Cliff Booth, his stunt double and best friend, a war veteran with a bad reputation but a friendly, relaxed manner. They have a natural, easy rapport, with Booth doubling as a drinking buddy and support system for Dalton, who’s increasingly anxious about his typecast future. (Al Pacino, as his agent, urges him to head to Italy for a spaghetti Western.)

lines. After a bout of selfloathing in his trailer, he returns and nails the scene.

DiCaprio, a preternaturally self-possessed actor himself, captures the whole arc beautifully.

When word got out that Tarantino’s latest film would take place around the Manson murders, it was easy to wonder what genre mayhem the director would bring to this epochal moment. We know what carnage resulted when Zed was dead, so what did Tarantino have in store for the demise of the ’60s?

It’s not that “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” doesn’t revolve around that

grisly tragedy. It looms always in the background, and eventually in the foreground, too, after Booth picks up a hitchhiker (Margaret Qualley) who leads him to the Manson compound at Spahn Ranch, the former production site of TV and film Westerns where Manson’s mostly female acolytes emerge and Booth goes to check on the owner, an old friend, George Spahn (Bruce Dern). Dalton and Booth are fictional concoctions surrounded by real people, including their neighbors: Tate and her husband, Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha).

By the film’s climax, blood

will spill and movie-made historical revisionism will have its day. But I suspect a lot of Tarantino fans will be taken by surprise at the film’s leisurely pace, set more to a (and this a good thing) “Jackie Brown” speed. As in that film, Tarantino isn’t purely living in an over-the-top movie fantasy world, but one teetering intriguingly between dream and reality.

The dialogue and action has slowed down enough to allow a little wistfulness and melancholy to creep in.

At times, his path is a little wayward and prone to digressions. Tarantino feels perilously close to simply turning his movie into several of Dalton’s, so eager is he (like the Coens were in “Hail, Caesar!”) to lovingly adopt those period styles.

But usually, the detours are hard to resist. In one, Booth ends up in a fight with Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) on the set of “The Green Hornet.”

And if you’re going to make a movie that celebrates what’s grand about Hollywood, it helps to have Brad Pitt in it. The chemistry between him and DiCaprio, together for the first time, is a delight; I would gladly

watch them drive around lacquered, golden-hour Los Angeles, with cinematographer Robert Richardson trailing them, for longer than the already lengthy running time of “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.”

Pitt, in particular, appears so utterly self-possessed.

It’s a swaggering grade-A movie star performance in a movie that celebrates all that movie stars can accomplish — which, for Tarantino, is anything. That the youthful, exuberant Tate was robbed of that potential is one of the wrongs Tarantino is righting here. But his fairy tale also swells with an even larger and optimistic vision.

For today’s doomsayers of movies, which are seen by some as a less potent art form, “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” imagines an apocalypse denied. Tate, and the movies, will live forever.

“Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for language throughout, some strong graphic violence, drug use, and sexual references. Running time: 161 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Department of Fine Arts to display China’s terracotta warriors The Department of Fine Arts putting China’s Terracotta Warriors on display at the Sivamok Phiman Throne Hall in the Bangkok National Museum for the next three months.

The exhibition, titled “Qin Shi Huang: The First Emperor of China and the Terracotta Warriors”, also features a collection of 133 relics that are over 2,200 years old. Visitors will see four lifesized terracotta warriors, one chariot and 86 relics found in a mausoleum in China. The exhibition is divided into zones, such as the period before the unification of China in 221 BC; the Qin dynasty and the Han dynasty. Furthermore, visitors will learn more about China’s ancient engineering skills and technology.

Reality set in for the 26 players when it was decided to go from the longer white tees today, at 6,600 yards. No problem with the condition of the course however, excellent as always, although the greens were a little slower than usual.

Coming in second to Derek was Jim Ferris, who has played very sparingly recently, and played to handicap for his 36 points.

Maurice Roberts was again in the mix by taking third spot with 35 points and Darren Beavers had to beat two others on countback for fourth spot with 33.

Mike Tottenham was one of those in the countback but picked up the prize for best back nine, while the best front nine went to Tom Herrington who is now enroute to the USA for a visit.

Near pins went to Andrew Purdie, Adam Barton, Paul Chesney, Tip Briney.

but the club is deep in preparations for a big national event there mid October. The majority of the white tee boxes were closed, leaving the white tees next to the blue ones, making the course much longer than normal, and in one case the white tees were behind the blues!

Lambert strikes gold at Phoenix PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, Sept. 9, Phoenix Gold Stableford Phoenix our usual venue for Mondays, with only a small field and nobody in front of us it was a fast round of golf. We played Mountain and Ocean and both nines were in great condition.

Apart from the scribe, who scored a magnificent 18 points total (his card looked like a picket fence), all the other golfers scored in the high 20’s or low 30’s. That is beside two who took the place apart.

Going out in the first group must be the way to go as Rick Culley just back from the old dart scored 40 points to take second, and one of his playing partners, Gerard Lambert, beat him by 1 point to take the top spot, playing his best round for a while.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, Green Valley – Stableford The scores from the male members of Billabong were not impressive today, with many playing well below their handicaps but in 4th place, beating his playing partner

Twenty-two golfers teed off on time and a tight contest ensued. In fourth place was Colin Service with 35 points, just one behind Darren Beavers on 36. Second place went to threehandicapper Paul Smith and he recorded gross 74 for 37 points. The winner, on his debut with the group, and looking resplendent in the Green Jacket, was Japanese golfer Aki Yamamoto with 39 points.

The A flight near pins went to Derek Phillips (A6 and B8) whilst the B flight near pins went to Colin Service (A3) and Bryan Barrell (B3).

Then Stu Thompson, having one of his quite regular good days, took third spot with 38.

Paul Smith rounded out the podium scoring 37 points to nudge out Chris Barker on countback.

Near pins were claimed by Paul Smith, Wayne Peppernell, and Stuart Thompson (x 2).

Ritchie McIntosh is always at the ready for some sort of headwear and this time it was the “silly hat” for lowest nine hole score.

Mick Beresford (12), just returned from a trip abroad, occupied 3rd place with 35 points despite having only 1 point on holes 1214. He was just 1 point behind Kevin Wild (25) who was close to destroying his round with only 4 points on the last three holes. Top spot was occupied by the departing Lloyd Shuttleworth (5) who had 1 point more than Kevin after the turn.

The Ladies once again, performed well with Miss Nu (15) only managing 3rd place with 37 points, losing a countback to Miss Sa (18) who had a very steady 18 holes. Miss Prae (36) had three 4-pointers in her round

which took her to 40 points and 1st place.

Only Miss Porn could manage a ‘2’ today.

Friday, Sept, 13, Burapha - Stableford Burapha was in great condition, with fast greens and lush fairways. We hadn’t played C and D loops for a long time and it really was a pleasant change.

The scoring was not that flash apart from Rick Culley hitting 38 points and taking line honours, closely followed by Nial Stewart with 35 and there was a countback for 3 rd between Thiery Temine and Sandy Chapo, with Sandy getting that place with a better back nine. Nial got the only ‘2’ of the day.

Monday, Sept. 9, The Emerald Stableford We just had a small group out today with only one division. The semi-rough here on the course was almost unplayable and this was reflected in the scores.

Roger Awad was the winner with 34 points, Paul Young came in second on 31, in third place eight points behind was Frank Grainger and with 22 points John Carlin took fourth.

There were four near pins up for grabs but only one winner, Paul Young in division 1 on the 15th.

Wednesday, Sept. 11, Treasure Hill Stableford An almost similar turnout as of Monday and Glen Loydall topped the podium

today with 34 points. Frank Grainger came second on 29 points and Tony Molloy was third with 28.

There were two near pins today but only one winner, Glen Loydall on the 2nd in division 2. Still no ‘2’s recorded after two outings this week.

Friday, Sept. 13, Eastern Star Stableford Back to reality on a Friday with two divisions out and Glen Loydall recorded the highest score of the day, winning division 2 with 36 points. Ron Lavett was second on 33 and Frank Kelly took third with 30.

Nik Evans’ 34 points was the best score in division 1, Tony Molloy was second one point behind and Colin Aspinall finished third with 32.

Geoff Parker also had thirty-four points but was beaten into second on countback. Geoff got revenge over his playing partner Raleigh Gosney by overtaking him on the last

hole, Raleigh came third with thirty-two.

The winner with a score of net sixty-nine was Geoff Cox, who had a couple of slipups but overall put together a quality round. Not too much different was Daryl Vernon who took second.

Daryl had a ‘10’ on the first but bounced straight back with a birdie on the second.

Monday saw fourteen golfers take the trip to Pattavia Golf Club. This is one of the courses that we try to play monthly and is a favorite with all.

Fourteen golfers gave us the one flight at Pattavia Golf Club, with three podium places and all novelties up for grabs. We went from the white tees and conditions were good.

Rod Weekes turned on the after-burners today and his 40 points were enough to give him the nod over the rest of the field. Second and

third went to the countback, both golfers had 34 points and as a coincidence both played in the same group, traveled in the same car to the golf, and ate breakfast at the same table! Anyway Dick won that countback from Wan, thus filling the podium.

Tuesday, Sept. 10, Pattavia - Stableford On Tuesday we went to Pattavia and, as always, were surprised by the quality of this course which was in a very good condition.

Nothing could stop Jonathan Pratt today as he played a very solid round and won with 41 stableford points. John Feeney was also in good shape and followed with 37 points.

The near pin awards went to Dave Smith and Jonathan Pratt.

It was a beautiful day with sun and a nice cool breeze and the course was in good condition.

Today we put our single handicappers, Jonathan Pratt and Dave Smith (both 7.4) in

the pressure of direct confrontation. Jonathan proved to be the most consistent on this day and won with 38 points. Dave was second with 32 points, beating John Feeney and Brett Gale on the countback.

The near pins were claimed by Stan Rees, Paddy Devereux and Brett Gale.

What did we learn from the Italian GP? Autopilot flaw, driver inattention causes Tesla crash

Tesla.

Detroit (AP) — A design flaw in Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system and driver inattention combined to cause a Model S electric car to slam into a firetruck parked along a California freeway, a government investigation has found.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the driver was overly reliant on the system and that Autopilot’s design let him disengage from driving.

The agency released a brief report Wednesday that outlined the probable cause of the January 2018 crash in the high occupancy vehicle lane of Interstate 405 in Culver City near Los Angeles.

The findings raise questions about the effectiveness of Autopilot, which was engaged but failed to brake in the Culver City crash and three others in which drivers were killed since 2016.

No one was hurt in the I-405 crash involving a 2014 Tesla Model S that was traveling 31 mph at the time of impact, according to the report.

The crash occurred after a larger vehicle ahead of the Tesla, which the driver described as an SUV or pickup truck, moved out of its lane and the Tesla hit the truck that had been parked with its emergency lights flashing while firefighters handled a different crash.

The probable cause of the rear-end crash was the driver’s lack of response to the firetruck “due to inattention and overreliance on the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance system; the Tesla Autopilot design, which permitted the driver to disengage from the

driving task, and the driver’s use of the system in ways inconsistent with guidance and warnings from the manufacturer,” the NTSB wrote in the report.

Tesla has said repeatedly that semi-autonomous system is designed to assist drivers, who must pay attention and be ready to intervene at all times. The company says Teslas with Autopilot are safer than vehicles without it, and that the system does not prevent all crashes.

CEO Elon Musk has promised a fully autonomous system next year using the same sensors as current Teslas, but with a more powerful computer and software. Current Teslas have more sensors than the 2014 model in the crash.

The report says the Tesla’s automatic emergency braking did not activate, and there was no braking from the driver, a 47-year-old man commuting to Los Angeles from his home in Woodland Hills. Also the driver’s hands were not detected on the wheel in the moments leading to the crash, the report said.

In the Florida crashes, one in 2016 and another in March of this year, the system failed to brake for a semi turning in front of the Teslas, and the vehicles went under the turning trailers. In the other fatality, in Mountain View, California, in March of 2018, Autopilot accelerated just before the Model X SUV crashed into a freeway barrier, killing its driver, the NTSB found.

Autopilot can steer a car in its lane, change lanes with driver permission, keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead of it and automatically brake to avoid a crash.

Autopilot gives drivers a warning if it doesn’t detect torque on the steering wheel at varying intervals. But unlike a similar system from General Motors, it does not watch the driver’s eyes to make sure he or she is paying attention.

Tesla said in a statement that Autopilot repeatedly reminds drivers to remain attentive and prohibits use of the system when warnings are ignored.

“Since this incident occurred, we have made updates to our system including adjusting the time intervals between hands-on warnings and the conditions under which they’re activated,” the statement said.

Tesla said the frequency of the warnings varies based on speed, acceleration, surrounding traffic and other factors.

In the Culver City crash, the larger vehicle ahead of the Tesla changed lanes three to four seconds before the crash, revealing the parked fire truck, the NTSB said.

“The system was unable to immediately detect the hazard and accelerated the Tesla toward the stationary truck,” the report said. The system did spot the firetruck and issued a collision warning to the driver just under a half-second before impact — too late for a driver to act, the agency wrote.

The NTSB found that a stationary vehicle in the Tesla’s field of view is a challenge for the system to assess a threat and brake. It says that detection of stationary objects is challenging for all manufacturers of driver-assist systems.

Quite a lot actually. We learned that the current F1 drivers and teams are a bunch of prats. The final qualifying session where the 10 cars tripped over each other and finally ran out of time and were unable to get a second crack at pole position.

This was ludicrous.

The race itself showed that Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) has definitely passed his Use-By date. His race year so far has been full of elementary mistakes. He will retire at the end of this season. Or should retire at the end of this season.

Charles Leclerc, his “Junior” team partner at Ferrari, has shown himself to be a future world champion. The only factor that could hold him back is Ferrari’s unreliable strategies, though in this race in Italy it was exemplary.

The Italian GP also showed us that Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) can get rattled and pressed into mistakes.

He pressured Leclerc into a mistake, but then made mistakes himself, resulting in his giving way to Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) and taking on a tyre change at the end of the

race, to gain prestige and one point. Hamilton does not like to be the chaser.

Bottas had missed opportunities after displacing Hamilton and crossed the line in second, while Mercedes team-mate and world championship leader Lewis Hamilton finished third after tyre trouble and an unfortunate lock-up during the closing stages.

“What a race,” said Leclerc.

“I have never been so tired.

I made a few mistakes, but in the end I finished first so I am very happy.” The 21 year old had had the race of his life, but there will be more.

After the two Mercedes

came the two Renaults in fourth and fifth with Ricciardo and then Hulkenberg. These were the best finishes for Renault this year, and may go to silence the critics of Ricciardo’s defection from Red Bull at the end of last year.

Alexander Albon (Red Bull) showed he is no meek and mild Thai copping a poor tactics flag for not leaving quite enough racing room. Putting the elbows out has always been an accepted maneuver. Time for the stewards to stop all the nonsense with their drive throughs and grid demotions for changes in engines. (They brought that rule in when I was racing in Australia. Fortunately both my engines had the same engine number.) An amazing happening.

The next GP is in Singapore on September 22 and the telecast starts at 7 p.m. for Thailand. I watch in Fletcher’s Folly, Siam Country Club Road, 300 meters before the Chicken Cross Roads.

Preventing Heat stroke deaths in children Detroit (AP) — By the 2025 model year, nearly all new vehicles sold in the U.S. will come with electronic alerts to remind people to not leave children behind in the back seats.

Twenty automakers representing 98% of new vehicles sold have agreed to install reminders in an effort to stop heatstroke deaths.

So far this year 39 children have died in the U.S. after being left alone in cars during hot weather. The advocacy group Kids and Cars says a record 54 children were killed last year.

Vehicles would give drivers audible and visual alerts to check back seats every time they turn off the ignition.

“Automakers have been exploring ways to address this safety issue, and this commitment underscores how such innovations and increased awareness can help children right now,” David Schwietert, interim CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a trade group that includes a dozen large car companies. Members of Global Automakers, an association of manufacturers based outside the U.S., also are taking part.

Automakers say the voluntary agreement will get the alerts installed faster than a government regulation, which takes four to eight years.

Only Tesla didn’t agree to the reminders, but it is not a member of either trade association.

Several automakers already are offering such a feature. General Motors, for instance, has a reminder on all of its four-door sedans, trucks and SUVs starting with the 2019 model year. The system issues alerts if the rear doors were opened before the start of a trip.

‘The Admiral’ sails away!

‘The Admiral’, is leaving Pattaya to return to the USA to live on a boat in San Diego, Southern California, which is no surprise as Dave served in the US Navy for 23 years.

During that time he first visited Thailand in 1973 and in November 1990 he moved to Pattaya permanently, playing golf with Caesars Bar on Beach Rd. He is mainly associated with the Kronberg Bar in Soi Diana where he has run golf for 25 years and at its height he was organizing some 10,000 individual rounds a year.

Sports Club (PSC) had a small office next to the Kronberg for the convenience of those wanting to join– a major benefit for both parties.

Dave has given great support to PSC Golf, having sat

on the Golf Committee for most of his time and introducing many members to the popular PSC monthly tournaments.

When I was informed of Dave leaving Pattaya, I passed this information to a number of people who over the years were familiar with Dave’s activities – Past President and Golf Chairman Tony Oakes and past Golf Chairman Mark West acknowledged the support they received from him during their watch. Mick O’Conner remembers playing with him at Caesars Bar all those years ago, The PSC members would like to send him all good wishes for the future. Keep in touch Dave!

Victory on the streets of Bangsaen for Stuvik and B-Quik

The third round of the Thailand Super Series 2019 was held at the stunning Bangsaen Grand Prix in Chonburi province from the 28th of August to the 1st of September 2019.

The beautiful seaside circuit hosted GT3 practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, culminating in a qualifying on Thursday afternoon. This was the first time for local racer Sandy Stuvik to be driving at Bangsaen in the GT3 category, having previously only run with the smaller categories in endurance. The Thai driver had a lot to learn, but Stuvik got up to speed quickly and qualified in 3rd position for Race 1, after rain hit on his warm-up lap.

Stuvik’s teammate Martin Rump of Estonia did a phenomenal job to qualify on Pole Position for Race 2, in a wet qualifying session.

Race 1 started on Saturday afternoon and Stuvik took

the start from 3rd place, and managed to maintain his position into the first two corners. From there he began to hunt down the two cars in front of him. Stuvik made a move for 2nd place against the Lamborghini and got past smoothly. Shortly after, he was on the heels of the leading Ferrari and made a successful move going into T2, claiming the lead. From there on the Thai driver extended his lead until the pit-stop window where he handed the Audi R8 GT3 Evo over to his partner Rump.

The Estonian rejoined the race in 3rd position, quickly got up to speed and within a few laps was able to make a fantastic move on the Ferrari for 2nd place. A few laps later he had caught up to the leading Lamborghini and took the lead in phenomenal fashion. From there he took the B-Quik Audi to the victory on the streets of Bangsaen.

Race 2 started on Sunday

afternoon and Rump took the start from pole position.

Unfortunately, the Audi could not compete off the line with some of the torque of the Ferraris, and the Estonian slotted in to 2nd position, maintaining a close distance to the leading Ferrari. Rump kept the pressure on until the pit-stop window where he handed over to Stuvik who rejoined the race down the order.

The Thai driver climbed up and was eventually challenging for 4th position, with the top 3 in sight. Unfortunately, as Stuvik made the move for 4th position he was taken out by one of his competitors, causing the Thai driver to spin, and lose a lot of time. From there he kept his head down and tried to focus on getting points, securing the fastest lap of the race on the penultimate lap, and is currently the lap record holder for Bangsaen Street Circuit.

Pettersen wins dramatic Solheim Cup for Europe then retires Steve Douglas Gleneagles, Scotland (AP) — Suzann Pettersen stood over the final shot of her golfing career, not quite realizing it also was the last shot of the most dramatic Solheim Cup ever played.

Europe’s players had their hands over their mouths, and their captain could barely watch. Blissfully unaware of what was unfolding was 1-year-old Herman, Pettersen’s first child who was also among the thousands around the 18th green at Gleneagles.

The putt was from 7 feet, slightly left to right, and it never looked like missing.

After being mobbed by her teammates on the 18th green, an emotional Pettersen held Herman in her arms and kissed him. The Europeans had regained the Solheim Cup and one of the stalwarts of women’s golf had her perfect ending.

“Yeah, this is it. I’m completely done,” said the 38-yearold Pettersen, confirming her sudden decision to retire. “It doesn’t get any better.”

On an afternoon of singles matches that pretty much had everything, Europe secured a 14 1/2-13 1/2 win over the United States to claim the biggest team prize in female golf for the first time since 2013.

The final act, spread over two holes with virtually simultaneous putts, could not have been more thrilling.

Just as Pettersen was addressing her putt at No. 18, U.S. player Ally McDonald slid a putt to the right of the hole at No. 17 and walked up to Bronte Law to concede the match in favor of the Europeans.

“I thought Bronte was in behind me on the (18th) fairway,” Pettersen said. “I actually didn’t know that it was THE putt.”

That it was Pettersen who secured the winning point felt apt.

She was a contentious wild-card pick by European captain Catriona Matthew because Pettersen had played just two tournaments — missing the cut in both — since November 2017. She had time off before and after giving birth to Herman, and then because of injury.

Pettersen also had a score to settle with the Solheim Cup. In her most recent appearance, at St. Leon-Rot in Germany in 2015, she refused to concede a short putt to Alison Lee on the 17th hole of a tight fourballs match before the singles on the final day. There were angry exchanges, and it

stoked a fire inside the Americans as they fought back from 10-6 down going into the singles to win 14½-13½.

Pettersen later apologized.

“She gone from villain to hero,” said Laura Davies, one of the European vice captains.

Pettersen’s redemption story was delivered in Scotland, the home of golf, where the U.S. team hasn’t now won in three attempts. Playing in her ninth Solheim Cup, Pettersen won two of her three matches and is now a four-time Solheim Cup winner.

The day started with the teams locked at 8-8 after four sessions, and the first definitive break of the entire contest happened when the Americans took the lead for the first time since Friday lunchtime, at 12-11.

At 13 1/2-11 1/2, they needed just a half-point from the final three singles matches out on the course to guarantee retaining the cup, but then came the European fightback.

Anna Nordqvist completed a 4-and-3 win over Morgan Pressel. Then, on No. 17, Law sealed a 2-and-1 win over McDonald to tie the score. Pettersen delivered for Europe on No. 18, but only after her opponent, Marina Alex, slid a 10-foot birdie putt wide that, if it had found the hole, would have been enough for the U.S. “I told them afterward, the sun’s going to come up tomorrow,” said U.S. captain Juli Inkster, when asked what she’d said to her players. “It was great for women’s golf.

We played great.

“But you know what, the Europeans played great.

You tip your hat. And you move on to Toledo.”

Inkster won’t be there in 2021, confirming afterward that she will not be captain for a fourth straight match.

She finishes with two victories from three Solheim Cups as captain.

Thai Garden Resort – the Duck stops here on Wednesdays!

Duck Buffet, Thursdays German Buffet with Roasted Pig, Fridays Asian Delights, Saturdays International Buffet and Sundays Steaks and Skewers Buffet.

We went on a Wednesday, so it was lucky ducky time!

With buffets, I always suggest you do a tour of the buffet tables first before choosing, as otherwise you will miss

One of our review panel went for the duck l’orange more than once! The others all tried different dishes and we were very pleased with the standard of the items as well as hot meals in the chafing dishes maintained by setting out small helpings and refilling frequently.

The number of dishes is amazing and even seven desserts and we pigged on ice cream, showing the difference between ‘gourmet’ and ‘gourmand’. But it was fun!

The Thai Garden Resort has been one of the most popular resorts in Pattaya for many years, and its themed buffets have been just as popular. Having been almost two years since our last review, it was decided it was time to repeat the process.

Exactly where is the Thai Garden Resort? For those who have never been to the Thai Garden Resort, it is on Pattaya Nua (North Road), and coming from Sukhumvit, it is 100 meters past Pattaya City Hall on the opposite side of the road. You can’t miss it. You can do a U-turn at the traffic lights. Plenty of parking inside the resort’s perimeter.

After parking, head towards the entrance of the main

building and go in through the reception area, heading towards the large free-form swimming pool. On your left is a glassed-in air-conditioned area which houses items from the resort’s cold kitchen. Outside there are the hot buffet items with the servings not too big, so that the chafing dishes are being continuously replenished.

Seating is relaxed with comfortable chairs and large tables. Staff are on hand to whisk away the used dishes while the diners are up choosing their next ones.

We washed everything down with the South African Eikendal white at B. 260 per glass and B. 1,300 THB per bottle. Another good drinking wine and the same price as the Eikendal is the Thai Garden’s Sauvignon Blanc from Chili.

The range of items makes this revolving buffet one of the best value buffets in Pattaya, and incidentally best to book as it can get busy.

Even with salads, there are multiple choices with fresh garden salad, marinated salad, mushroom bruschetta, Vietnamese roll, Kim-Chee, Mexican salad, ham and cheese

The house trio entertains the diners.

What must be remembered is that these buffets are only B. 499 (all you can eat) and here’s an offer - children under 12 can dine free if accompanying an adult diner. (This offer runs to October 31.) Children under 4 are free anyway.

There is a musical trio serenading diners with easy listening music, to just make the buffet even more enjoyable.

Salmon and avocado

Avocados are back in town. They range from B. 79 to B. 99 at the time of writing this, but you only need two. (Or you can cheat and buy a commercial avocado dip.) Salmon steaks are available at better supermarkets. This is a very simple and quick dish but one that is a little above the ‘ordinary’. The Himalayan Pink Salt is a bit of a giggle, but worth it.

Ingredients Serves 6 Avocados peeled, pitted and diced Garlic, peeled and minced 2 cloves Greek-style yogurt 3 tbspns Fresh lemon juice 1 tbspn Salt and pepper to taste Salmon steaks 1 kg Dried dill weed 2 tspns Lemon pepper 2 tspns Himalayan pink salt

Cooking method Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil grate.

In a medium bowl, mash together avocados, garlic, yogurt, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.

Rub salmon with dill, lemon pepper, and salt. Place on the prepared grill, and cook 15 minutes, turning once, until easily flaked with a fork. Serve with the avocado mixture, and lightly sprinkle with the pink salt.

The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism (DASTA) in co-operation with Prasae Community and the Green Hotel Association recently organised ecotourism activities in Pak Nam Prasae Community, Rayong Province. Participants experienced the local Pak Nam Prasae fisherman community, learnt about the mangrove ecosystem, and planted mangroves at Plook-Pan-Pong Learning and Conservation Centre. Neoh Kean Boon GM of Dusit Thani Pattaya and Thitipat Chirayunon, Marketing Communications Manager represented the hotel industry in this eco-preservation exercise.

4,000 join Loma charity beach run

Jetsada Homklin Some 4,000 runners joined the 7th Loma Run for Charity at Dongtan and Jomtien beaches on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai chaired the opening of the event and sent the athletes on the way over 3 races distances: 10kms, 6km and a 3.5km fun walk/run.

Participants sport team colors and Loma balloons as they enjoy the ocean-side run.

Jointly organized by Pattaya City and the YWCA Bangkok-Pattaya, the beach run was held to raise money for worthy causes, promote a healthy lifestyle and also highlight Pattaya’s natural attractions and endorse the city’s ability to host largescale sporting events.

Race day was well attended, with the thousands of participants donning their complimentary LOMA running vests or fancy dress and turning Jomtien beach and promenade into a sea of color.

For safety reasons, Pattaya police closed down Jomtien Beach Road to one lane of traffic for the duration of the event.
