What I like about Surecell

I

t’s very unfortunate but bad experiences, especially those that happen when you are young, may mean you develop a fear or phobia as a result in later life. For example, the mere sound of a dentist’s drill is enough to set my teeth on edge (literally) as it brings flooding back memories of a rather brutal NHS dentist I was subjected to back in the UK as a child. Similarly if like me your veins are “deep” and not easily brought to the surface, you may, like me have a fear of needles due to clumsy and painful attempts of well meaning nurses “trying to find a vein” and after several very painful attempts, extract some blood. Therefore if this is putting you off the idea of having any treatments at Sure Cell let me put your mind at rest.

From the very top Dr Peter Lewis has probably given more injections than any Doctor on the planet! If you want to see him you must book an appointment He is not often in Pattaya as an extremely hectic schedule seems him jetting around the many Sure Cell clinics throughout Australia, Bangladesh, Dubai etc. and visiting private patients in China and throughout Asia. However, his training and “needle expertise” carries on throughout Sure Cell. Therefore whoever you find attending you from the doctors through to the nurses you will find the procedure as painless as possible. The delicate touch and reassuring confidence everyone exudes can put even the most nervous patient at ease. The clinic is spotlessly clean with staff who are extremely professional and yet still friendly and happy to explain every step of the procedure. If you visit their website http://www.surecell.co.th/events before going to the clinic at the top of Soi 6, Pratumnak you will find a list of all the available treatments with helpful videos giving clear concise, explanations. However, whatever treatment you do go to Sure Cell for rest assured you will be in safe - painless hands!

THAILAND’S PLASTIC PROBLEM

A

ccording to a recent report, 60% of the nine million tonnes dumped in the oceans annually can be attributed to five countries: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. How did this happen? How did Thailand become one of the world’s bad guys when it comes to polluting the planet with plastic? As anyone knows who has lived in Thailand for any amount of time, the country is drowning in plastic. Go into any convenience store and buy a pack of six or twelve bottles of water. These will be all plastic bottles, the tops will be second sealed with plastic, they will then be enclosed in two plastic bags for added strength, and last but not least six plastic straws, with plastic covers will be thrown in for good measure! As Thailand’s consumption of plastic has grown since the nineteen seventies, it has been accompanied by a huge boom in its petrochemical industry. Currently, Thailand has Southeast Asia’s second biggest petrochemical sector and the 16th biggest globally. This has led to a huge plastic waste problem which is causing mass pollution, especially for the worlds seas and oceans. The latest figures show that over nine million tonnes of plastic waste are dumped out to sea every year. As you can imagine, this causes terrible problems for the environment and the marine animals who live there. The news is littered with reports nowadays of creatures being washed ashore having ingested large quantities of plastic. And of course, when humans consume these species they also consume the plastic, which contributes to cancer and infertility, alongside many other problems yet to be discovered. The huge growth in the petrochemical industry and the less than stringent regulations on these companies has led to a domestic increase in plastic use that defies belief. Just as an example, Thais on average use eight plastic bags each per day, given to them relentlessly by supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide. This equates to almost 2 BILLION bags per year. Add this to the massive use of bottled water in this country and it’s not hard to see that the waste problems will pile up. The second main reason why the country creates such problems is its poor waste management. Almost 80% of the country’s marine plastic comes from land based waste that flows from the rivers into the ocean. Also, when the waste is first disposed of, very few people sort out the plastics from general waste. As for our local community in Pattaya, you won’t see too many condominiums that encourage the sorting of plastic from other refuse by separation at the point of disposal. Different coloured bins and labelling would be a start. Whatever the solutions are, it will take a complete change in thinking by the country’s population, a huge financial investment and a concerted effort by the powers that be to reverse the never ending flow of plastic coming our way. ED - Let’s hope the fightback starts soon and the following projections all come in to place as planned i.e. that by the end of 2019 Thailand will be free from microbeads, cap seals and oxo-degradable plastics and by 2022 four other types of single-use plastics will also be banned – lightweight plastic bags (less than 36 microns thick); styrofoam food containers (for takeaways) plastic cups and plastic straws. This comes from The Plastic Waste Management Road Map 2018-2030 as approved by the Cabinet which also has an ambitious plan for Thailand to use 100 per cent recycled plastic by 2027 in various forms, including turning waste into energy– here’s hoping!

The War on Plastics Continues

T

he Independent newspaper recently announced its results of the 2019 Underwater Photos Awards and "Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year 2019” was awarded to Eduardo for this amazing picture of a caretta turtle ensnared in plastic. This beautiful creature would undoubtedly have died had it not been freed by the two underwater photographers who were sailing nearby, Such images are needed to help remind society of the increasing problem of rubbish/garbage/trash but particularly plastic ending up in the sea directly affecting the marine environment.

Obviously we can all play our own small part to help this problem, by reducing our use of straws and other plastics. Last year in our Pattaya Trader “Goes Green Issue” (still available to read in Back issues page of pattayatrader.com) we urged each and every one of our readers to avoid plastic wherever possible, especially at convenience stores and recommended that everyone refuse plastic bags or buy bags for life. Since then some of the message seems to be getting through, CP All Public Company, the sole operator of 7-Eleven stores in Thailand, announced its intention to reduce the use of singleuse plastic bags at all their stores throughout the country after calculating that 102,323,402 plastic bags had been rejected or unused between 7th December 2018 to January 13th 2019. So please continue to fight the good fight! Also in three students from Thailand’s Mahidol’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology: Tanakitti Sachati ,“Bank”, Bundit Hou ,“Bun” and Sarayut Lawilai “Kopkap” recently won a prize in Seoul, South Korea at the Asian Conference on Campus Sustainability, for their Smart Bin Project. As Bank explains : We all understand that recycling is a good thing, but there is no motive or platform for anyone to actually do it. It’s like eating well and exercising regularly; unless something affects you directly, you don’t do anything about it. People who recycle are either maids or people driving around in sa leng [three-wheel vehicles] buying and selling plastic in big lots.So we created an app that gives you reward points to redeem every time you recycle. His teammate Bun went on to say “First, you need to download the MU Recycle application on your phone and create a profile. There’s an online map to tell you where to find smart bins nearby. Once you find the bin, there’s a QR code for you to scan via the application in order to receive points. When the screen says “Ready” you can put the plastic bottle in the bin and your phone will tell you how many points you’ve just received * The app should be ready next year and lets home these ingenious students get enough backing to make this great idea a reality! Certainly there are a few inventive ideas popping up like these recently seen in a food store in Chiangmai

PAGS from Laem Chabang

By Jeff Wylie

N

inety-four players, including six ladies teed off in the rain at Laem Chabang. There were nearly forty prospective players who could not see the rain clearing and therefore opted for not starting their round, deciding instead to go home in their comfy warm clothes. The ninetyfour hardy souls battled around the A & B combination, with preferred lie on the closely mown surfaces being the order of the day. Greens rolled smoothly, but were very firm, even with the rain to soften them up. The rain cleared about 11:30am, so the later tee offs probably had some advantage. Despite the inclement conditions there were still some good scores, none better than a spectacular 43 points from Steve Truelove (12). Steve shot 77 to also win the Low Gross, plus got the Long Drive on 18, for a really astounding day. The minor placings in the A flight went to Brad Jordison (10), to go with his maximum 2 technicals, while Daniel Grob (13) beat Sam Torkkeli 20/16 on countback, after both signed for 35 points. In the B Flight 14 – 21, Daniel Isaramart (14) led the way with a solid 40 points, to go with his approach on #12. The silver position going to Hans-Georg Bufe (19) with 38 points, while Per Lovegren (19) did enough for 36 points and 3rd spot. C Flight for handicaps 22 and above was won clearly by Dan Margetts (26) with a strong 40 points. Birger Karlsson (33) showed glimpses of good form to record 37 points to secure 2nd place, with Thomas-Joerg Leuscher (24) signing for 35 points and the bronze medal position. Ewa Nilsson (33) played well in the conditions to complete her round with 38 points, and a win in the Ladies division. Honourable mentions go out to Ville Korri and Jack Slowlak who both secured the maximum number of 2 technical prizes. A good crowd attended Hemingways for the Buffet dinner and prize presentation, with the earlier dining being a positive for most participants. TIGER TIGER BURNING BRIGHT

T

iger Woods completed one of the greatest comebacks in sport last month when at the age of 43 he won the Masters at Augusta. He completed a final round two under par 70 to take the title after taking control of the tournament on the final nine holes where he outplayed and out thought his rivals down the home stretch.

Some commentators are calling it the greatest comeback of all time, although I think the ghost of Mohammed Ali might have something to say about that. Nonetheless, it is a remarkable achievement when you consider the problems he’s faced over the last few years. Leaving aside his personal problems for the moment, what he has had to overcome on the injury front alone is a testament to his fighting spirit and will to win. Three knee surgeries and four back surgeries, the fourth of which was a desperate last gasp trip to the UK to see the one specialist who could possibly help him by performing a fusion operation. Months of rehab and hours and hours of practice got him back to where he is now and where is that? Back in the top ten in the world, his fifth Masters and fifteenth major title in the record books to lay only three behind the Jack Nicklaus held eighteen majors record and amongst the favourites for the three remaining majors coming up over the next few months. Speaking of which, I read an interesting article where they interviewed his long time ex-caddy Steve Williams and he noted that if you could hand pick three courses where Tiger would have a chance to win it would be Bethpage Black, venue for the USPGA this month, Pebble Beach, scene of his crushing fifteen shot win in the 2000 US open and many other victories and Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, home to this year’s British Open and a practice ground for Tiger for many years when he went over to contest the oldest major championship. Tiger can’t be ruled out of any of this year’s majors, and will go to the Masters with a leading chance for another three years at least if his back holds out. So the once unthinkable possibility of Jack’s eighteen major record being equaled or bettered is not the forlorn hope it once was. He will obviously plan his whole schedule around a few leading tournaments, which will help, but eclipsing the Great Jack will still be a mighty tall order. Finally, I have noted in the past how long it takes child prodigy sports stars to grow up, and Tiger is no exception. Driven and focused on nothing else but golf since early childhood, his recent troubles look like they have turned him into a much nicer human being, and the outpouring of affection as he came off the eighteenth at Augusta reflected this. So good luck to him and long may he long continue. The game of golf needs him!

Eco keeps a country alive – Think Twice before discarding rubbish

I

n past articles I have used this quote and I really do think that it sums up why Thai culture ensures that the eco systems and re-generation of fish stocks are majorly important to the Thai communities.

“In the time of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, this land of Sukhothai is thriving. There is fish in the water and rice in the fields.” Thai historians claim these are the words of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, ruler of the Sukhothai Kingdom from 1279–1298 and creator of the Thai alphabet, describing his lands during his reign. The mention of plentiful fish, as a way of portraying a nation that is at peace and thriving, shows how important fish have always been to the Thais as a source of food and a symbol of a settled civilisation. People, who live in a land where both fish and rice are abundant, will never go hungry. Enough of the history you say …. If you’re one of those unlucky souls who’s susceptible to seasickness, you’ll probably prefer to do some fishing on land. Luckily, Thailand has many freshwater lakes that have been stocked to attract sports fishermen. In fact, Thailand can boast some of the world’s largest species of freshwater fish, including Giant Catfish, Siamese Carp, Barramundi and the great predator, the Giant Snakehead. Records for big catches are regularly broken in the kingdom, with anglers reeling in some monster fish. There are lakes up and down the country with some offering specialised fishing packages which include all tackle, lures, bait and transport. Some anglers may stay for several days, and rent floating bungalows, so that they are never far from the rod and reel action. The growing popularity of freshwater fishing has led to a surge in aquaculture and fish farming, it is hoped that this will ensure the long-term survival of many threatened species.Even if you don’t want to catch your own lunch and have a stronger stomach than the land lubbers, it’s always fascinating to visit a fishing village and enjoy the comings and goings of the locals and look at the colourful boats. There are numerous charming villages up and down Thailand’s coastline, as well as on the islands. Many of these now offer tours so you can head out in fishing vessels, see mussel and oyster farms and even watch the locals at work. This is a wonderful way of experiencing grassroots Thailand and of getting a unique perspective on the local wildlife. A visit to a fishing village usually means you get the chance to sample some of the freshest home-cooked seafood you’ll ever taste. The importance of fish to Thai culture cannot be underestimated. For centuries, fish have not just been another ingredient but the main source of protein for the people. As a result, fish are as important to the kingdom’s cultural traditions, as they are to the eco-growth and as they are to its culinary ones. So, next time you order a tasty fried Pla Kapong, sample a shrimp or simply flavour your food with a dash of Nam Pla, remember that your part of a life-sustaining Thai tradition that stretches back millennia. So if you want to do your bit towards keeping it so remember not to dump your rubbish/trash/ flotsam and jetsam by the sides of the lakes and in the water. So… Tight lines everyone and Please! Please Please! don’t dump rubbish near the lakes or sea.

officer fails to notify the suspect of his legal rights upon the seizure, it would mean that any confessions made beforehand may not be used as evidence.

Legal Counsel A suspect has the right to request for a competent legal counsel, to meet him in private and to secure his attendance during the proceedings. Should the arrested suspect cannot afford a lawyer, the court can provide one without any cost.

Bail A written request must be submitted by a bailsman to the investigating officer, who will ask for particular documents. The result of the bail review shall be announced within 24 hours. The minimum bail amounts may vary because the amount of bail for each case is set by the presiding judge of each jurisdiction. Alternative Investments

lternative Investments are classed as ones that do not fit into the usual investment types such as those held on stock exchanges, mutual funds, stocks, pensions, government bonds, etc. They include things such as private equity, hedge funds, infrastructure projects, property, derivatives, commodities, forex, IPOs (Initial Public Offerings), crowd funding etc. Most alternatives have low liquidity compared to conventional types. An example of this is that it will be a lot harder to sell a part stake in such as a Malaysian forest compared to shares in Microsoft because of the limited number of buyers. By nature Alternative Investments are usually unregulated. This means that although there are some excellent ones there are others which are highly risky. Some are outright fraud and scams. Always be wary of unsolicited calls offering fantastic returns in IPOs, fine wine, property etc. They’ll provide you with glossy convincing brochures and persuasive sales talk. These are normally from people using false names working in “boiler rooms” in some far off country. You’ll receive worthless ownership papers and receive updates telling you how well your investment is doing but in reality they’ve stolen your money. Once the complaints start coming in they disappear off the face of the earth. So be warned. Make sure you undertake homework and due diligence to find out if the opportunity is genuine. Having found a genuine opportunity how do you value it should you wish to sell it in the future? If we take the example of the Malaysian forest again where do you go to sell it? Where do you get a valuation from? Very often there isn’t one so how do you know what price to put on it? Think of the things that can go wrong with an investment. Trees can get diseases, forests can burn down, there can be illegal logging. In short look at all the angles in a worst case scenario. If you are being offered a 15% return per year, what’s the catch? How long have the company been in business? What profits and losses have they made in previous years? Who are the people behind the company? Can you talk to other investors? There are excellent alternative investments out there but you have to go in to them with your eyes fully wide open. The returns can be brilliant but the losses can be devasting, you might well end up losing everything. I cannot stress enough that it is essential that you get expert advice and undertake all the necessary checks to ensure that the opportunity is genuine. If you are new or inexperienced in saving and investing I would recommend that you stay away from this type of thing. If you are experienced and everything stacks up them by all means go for it. However I would recommend that it only forms a small part of your overall portfolio. Not more than 15% of the total amount that you have invested. We are available to answer any questions that you might have. It is part of our service. We can be contacted by either telephone: +66 (0)8 7831 7834 or by email: admin@expatfinance.org

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya.

SOLUTIONS

So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas.
