The Dark Side Illuminating The Way Ahead

A

high proportion of visitors and even expats avoid the Dark Side as they wrongly believe that it is a label for something sinister and Dark. Nothing could be further from the truth, the moniker came about as East Pattaya was one of the last areas to have street lighting in the greater Pattaya conurbation.

Today East Pattaya is fast becoming one of the chic and most desireable areas to live in Pattaya, and as top class accommodation is being built on modern estates and complexes, business are popping up all over the place to cater for the influx of new residents.Reasons behind this are manyfold, property is cheaper, roads are quieter, the most infuriating tourists are absent, and generally there is an overall feel of being in a real village-type community. Many new bars, restaurants, leisure activities, shops, and all manner of local businesses have been opened to service the increased demand. Sunny’s restaurant is a prime example, the business is deliberately targeting families, with a wonderful enclosed kids play area including trampolines and a pool. For the adults there is a fabulous bar with a pool table and flat screen TVs plus a wonderful bar menu. If you want fine dining then Sunny’s also has a top notch restaurant with a good wine cellar Or if you just want to shoot the breeze and enjoy a Caribbean-style atmosphere then Jaybee’s is the perfect place. Really reasonable pricing and great music make this venue, plus of course it’s genial host John, who encapsulates the friendly atmosphere. Perhaps you are missing the little comforts from home? Then look no further than Siambury’s which is an expat’s dream. Cheddar cheese, Danish bacon, English-style gammon, pickles, Coleman’s mustard……….the list goes on and on. Or if you have just relocated and have a new home? Tangaro is the answer to all your occasional and fitted furniture needs. This classy and bespoke furniture manufacturer can design, manufacture and install the perfect fitted kitchen, bedroom or any other space in your abode. Or if you are into golf The Players Lounge is a great sports bar especially as they have regular golf outings and trips for patrons to enjoy to some of the best courses in and around Pattaya. It is also a great place for golfers to hang out and watch live sport on the TVs. The Players Lounge also has accommodation, so invite your friends from back home to come over and play a few rounds. Perhaps you are looking for a great family day out ? Then the revamped Elephant Village is the perfect place to take the kids. Notwithstanding the fantastic Elephants on show, there are plenty of other attractions to keep the whole family busy. Including a traditional Thai dancing show and due to popular demand, a new theatre that is being built for future shows and performances. The Dark Side is well and truly coming of age, be brave it is time to cross the tracks and discover the new East Pattaya, you will not be disappointed.

I

t’s that time of year again and Movember is upon us. Movember is the annual event which involves the growing of a moustache during the month of November. It is a global charity and it focuses on raising awareness of men’s health issues to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives. Hopefully, by the end of November there will have been a huge amount raised in sponsorship for the charity.

By Felix Cavaliere

involved by expanding their charity to embrace “the sweaty Mo” short for “Move”. The idea is that all genders and ages can set a distance goal at the start of the month and through November walk, run, cycle or swim to achieve it raising money for men’s health through sponsorship at the same time.

So when did Movember begin? Back in 2003, a group of friends decided to go out for a beer in Melbourne, Australia, and the idea behind Movember was born. As the moustache was no longer in fashion they wanted to know if they could bring it back. Initially, they had around 30 guys to take on the challenge, but at that time they didn’t manage to raise any funds. So in 2004 they started to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men's health, and from 30 participants they grew to 450 and succeeded in raising $43,000. Fast forward to 2016 when the global campaign managed to raise over $80 million with more than 325,000 participants joining in the hairy fun.

How do I become a MoBro? Very simple! Grown your own ‘tache’ this November and get your friends, family, work colleagues or anyone who can sponsor you to start raising money for a great cause. If you make your way to the Movember website, www. movember.com, you can find plenty of suggestions on how many other organisations support Movember within a workplace.

Need some ideas? The Movember Foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale their goal to “stop men dying too young”. This year they are also encouraging women to get

Also, this year Big Business is getting involved L’Oreal have brought out a beard, face and hair wash called Men Expert and are using the tag line: ’L'Oreal Men Expert because men's health is worth it” and during the campaign, L'Oreal will be donating a portion of their profits to the Movember Foundation. Also, to celebrate the star studded release from 20th Century Fox of Murder on the Orient Express the campaign is using the catch phrase

break from drinking and smoking. In fact it’s been 4 weeks since I got back from Kho Phangan and I have managed to stay away from those vices and I have definitely become a lot more conscious about the food I eat and how much exercise I do each week. All in all, I am considering doing this detox procedure on a yearly basis and would definitely recommend you do it too!

A general warning Of Course, no good thing in life comes without some drawbacks and when it comes to this detox program there some intense aspects to it of which you need to be aware .Firstly you will have to go through 2 daily sessions of colemas AKA internal showers or self administered enemas. I locked myself away in a resort for a 7 day fast and complete detox program. It was one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever been through. In retrospect, I couldn’t be happier I did it. I won’t deny I was quite skeptical about the treatment at first, I had ruled it as some kind over-hyped new age scam. It wasn’t until 2 people I know personally (whose opinions I respect a lot) swore by it that I decided to give it a go.Luckily for us expats, the Kingdom offers a big selection of detox retreats, specially in Kho Phangan where Yoga retreats and alternative medicine are the norm.So after a couple weeks of intense research I settled for Ananda Detox and Yoga retreat (anandayogadetox.com). They seemed to offer the best value for money and their facilities looked really nice (the salt pool and herbal sauna in particular).

There's no way around this, they are weird, uncomfortable and about the furthest from enjoyable you are going to get. Tell you what though, it gets much easier after the second day and by the third day I was kinda looking forward to my morning organic coffee colema, it actually gave me a lot of energy. In retrospect I'm happy I went through it all - the sheer amount of crap we literally collect throughout the years thanks to our modern diet and lifestyle is just mind boggling. You will also feel a lot cleaner and lighter immediately afterwards and in fact for quite a time after the whole process.

What’s included in the package • All detox herbs and shakes (4-6 times a day) • Daily Massage • Access to salt pool and herbal steam sauna (both come very handy during the detox process) • Meditation classes in the morning and Yoga classes at night • Daily coconut and carrot juice • Drinking water • Accommodation in AC rooms • First post-fast meal

So what exactly did I get out of this detox program? If you spend some time searching online you will quickly realise lots of people say that detox can fix an almost infinite amount of health conditions and problems. I am not a doctor (and neither are they) so I will restrict myself by explaining how the detox made me feel and what apparent benefits it brought me. Apart from a huge increase in energy that I started feeling from the 3rd day on I also befitted from feeling generally more healty as I had used this detox to also help me make a clean

The other aspect that is really difficult to go through is the 7-day fast. You will be consuming no solid food for your entire stay there, definitely a big change from our daily routine even though the herbal shakes you get throughout the day actually do a great job of making you feel ‘full’. Plus my energy levels actually went up around the 3rd day. I was rather surprised about this but it was explained to me that digestion is quite a complex and energy consuming process so not having anything to digest for a while does lead to a boost in your energy and I can attest this was true.

Conclusion: As I mentioned earlier, I was pleasantly surprised by the results I got from my detox break .I might have had my doubts at the start but am now certainly convinced there’s something to all of this hype. Although I would caution against believing that this is a magic cure for most ailments, (as it’s sometimes portrayed) it can certainly help cleanse your system. After all your body needs a break once in awhile so it can go back to the daily struggle of dealing with our modern lifestyle.- I know I will be back to Ananda detox center in 2018. The Brave Lion

ave you been searching for authentic Italian food in Pattaya? Well the answer to all your problems may have just opened its doors - welcome to the new Brave Lion in Pratumnak. If you were familiar with the the previous Brave Lion establishment then you will be most surprised at the Italian revolution currently taking place. Inside the restaurant there has been a big spruce up, smart red decor adorns new tables and chairs. The Brave Lion has a definite Italian feel and the new manager Corrado, is as Italian as they come. On arrival we were handed the breakfast menu which is served until 12pm. There are three European choices including an unusual Beef Breakfast which includes a mini-burger, Australian beef bacon, 2 eggs any style, tomato, toast, coffee and juice. Also available till midday are a limited range of Thai dishes that start at 80 baht they include Kao Pad, Tom Yum Khung, Panang Curry and Pad Phra Pao. After midday the full menu comes into play including starters, salads, first dishes, and BBQ second courses. The salads include some excellent choices along with Carpaccio di Manzo, Melanzane Grigliate, Caprese and Burrata Su Letto di Rucola. Corrado explained that his Italian dishes all have authentic ingredients and are made to age old Italian recipes that have not been tampered with. Corrado was taught cooking by his mother, and how to control the balance of the ingredients to produce Italian food with the flavours and tastes of Italy.

Issue 204 | NOVEMBER 2017

His First Dishes are delectable bowls of pasta, his Carbonara is made the Roman way with no cream, the creamy texture comes from the delicious Pecorino cheese that is used. Even the bacon that Corrado uses in his cooking is not what you would think, it is pork cheek from animals that roam on the Italian mountains. The pastas too are not your normal run of the mill fare, Timballo Alla Teramana, Spaghetti Alla Carbonara, and Linguine Al Nero to name but three. There is also a choice between Red and White pizzas, one type made with a tomato base the other with mozzarella, both with delicious authentic fresh toppings, you will not see any pineapple on these pizzas! The second courses come from the outside BBQ, which include Italian sausages, Argentinian beef tenderloin, pork steaks, Norwegian salmon and Australian lamb chops. Also The Brave Lion has a wonderful Italian wine cellar, at really good prices so you can wash the terrific food down with authentic vino. Deep tasting and classic reds such as Barolo and Amarone are complemented with Chianti and Rioja. The house wine is available by the glass and that too is imported from Italy, a choice of Pinot Grigio and Merlot. Corrado is hoping that the Brave Lion can attain the Ospitalita Italiana like his two previous restaurants had. It is a respected certification of Italian authenticity that is run by the Italian / Thai Chamber of Commerce, that is documented and approved in Rome. Watch this space as expected sometime in November is the appearance of a celebrity chef from Italy. He is a threetime champion pizza maker of Italy and appears on Italian TV as a culinary judge. He will be demonstrating the art of pizza making, and it will prove to be both an instructional and highly entertaining evening. The Brave Lion is a little part of Italy right here in Pattaya, the pricing is more than reasonable and the tastes are all authentic Italian. You can even spend the night as the Brave Lion has 9 well appointed guest rooms, so order a second bottle of Barolo and have a thoroughly relaxing evening.

Get Your Tackle In, and Tear Those Boys (and Girls) Apart

O

ur sporting attention for this month’s article in The Pattaya Trader magazine sees us turning our attention to rugby. There are a whole host of games coming up during “Movember” (reference to the Global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health) - there’s a great article on why you should grow your tash during the month, written by Felix - so don’t miss it! Back to Rugger (union style), as I said, the games come thick and fast for the 2017 Autumn Internationals. In fact some of the games start on the 21st October and run through for 7 weeks, right up until the last game on the 2nd December with Wales hosting South Africa. For those who aren’t familiar, these sets of games feature internationals in the Northern Hemisphere played out predominantly by visiting Southern Hemisphere countries (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) and the following sides from Europe, including England, France , Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

Kicking Things Off The first games we know kick off on the 21st October, with what can only be described as a mouth-watering game. All attention will be turned to Lang Park, Brisbane when Australia take on New Zealand with the Wallabies hoping to avenge the defeat inflicted earlier on in the year. Rugby enthusiasts will perhaps recall a top game in which Australia sped to a 17 points to nil lead. Sadly for the Aussies they went down 35 points to 29 at the final whistle thanks to a terrific fightback from the All Blacks. The game was as tight as a “Pattaya lovely’s” grip (on yer wallet) going into the last 10 minutes, with the Wallabies leading by 22 points to 21, thanks to Ben Smith going over on 71 minutes. New Zealand had to dig very deep to come up with the win. There are some really spicy encounters scheduled, including: • Wales vs Australia - November 11th • France vs New Zealand - November 11th • Italy vs Argentina - November 18th • England vs Australia November 18th • Wales vs New Zealand - November 25th • Ireland vs Argentina - November 25th • France vs Japan - November 25th Check the times for games at your local sports bar. You can expect the likes of Retox / Robin Hood, I-Rovers, The Sportsman, Legends et.al. to have the games covered.

Rugby League World Cup 2017 If that isn’t enough Rugby to send you do-lally then don’t worry, the “fest” continues!! League fans will not be disappointed as the Rugby League World Cup gets underway, with no less than 3 host countries.Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea all host a number of games with no less than 28 matches scheduled between start and finish. To be fair the lion share of the games are in the larger two countries. A mixture of global sports providers will ensure that you don’t miss a scrummage, line-out, penalty or try. All you need to do is pop along to your local sports bar, get a couple of beers in and sit back to enjoy the action! After the group stages the real action starts to warm up - some refer to this as the tournament proper starting. Quarter-finals get underway on Friday 17th November at Darwin with most likely Australia or England facing Samoa. Saturday 18th sees 4 more quarter finals being played out, I’d have a guess at the line up being something like this: • Scotland vs Italy • New Zealand vs either France or England The final game in this set of 4 is will feature the runner up in Group A and the winner of Group C. So in reality this could conceivably be a matchup of England or France playing Wales or Ireland. Tasty stuff indeed!! Brisbane Stadium will host the final on the 2nd December, which could easily see a repeat of the 2013 final in which Australia pummeled the Kiwi’s 34 - 2. Of course, the other 12 represented nations will have a thing or two to say about that! The headline, those who can remember that far back has suggested tearing the boys and girls apart. This isn’t as odd as it might sound, as not to be out done by the guys the women also have their own Rugby League World Cup.

with tickets on sale from just $10. Children under 16 and concession card holders get in for free! No fewer than 13 host cities will get to showcase games for the ladies tournament, helping to bring the appeal to a local level throughout Sydney and Brisbane. The tournament has been part of the fixture list since it’s inception back in 2000, when the UK hosted the inaugural outing. The competing nations might have been excused for giving up, as New Zealand went on to win the first 3 competitions. (it's’ obviously not just the guys that have a great rugby team!).For those who are newbies to this form of the sport, here’s a look back at the tourney winners so far: New Zealand 26 - 4 Great Britain (2000) New Zealand 58 - 0 Maori (2005) New Zealand 34 - 0 Australia (2008) Australia were able to inflict a level of retribution in the 2013 final, running out winners by 22 to 12. So whether you are a fan of ladies (what’s not to cracking

Union, League or just love) there are some games coming up soon. Who needs football when there’s this much rugger coming up ?!

Women’s World Cup For the first time in the history of this tournament the Women’s Rugby League World Cup will be played as a standalone event. The popularity of the tournament combined with a partnership with Harvey Norman has helped to elevate the status of the ladies competition to new levels. If you are lucky to be in the vicinity then you can watch the action close up

Hole in 1 for Thankiat & Good Day from Todd

By Jeff Wylie

T

here were clear skies with a light breeze on the day of the PAGS tournament over the Mountain & Lakes combination. A field of 108 keen players including a satisfactory number of 12 Ladies enjoyed the weather conditions that made for a picture perfect day of golf. With some overnight rain, the decision had been made to have preferred lie on the closely mown surfaces, to help avoid an undeserved mud ball. Overall the course was in good condition, & playing to it’s correct yardages on most holes.

Most months, there is generally a standout performer or 2 on the day, this month despite some good performances there was more of an even spread across the field. The Ladies winner Samron (21) with her day’s outstanding best Stablefored score of 43 points and a technical prize was amongst the top performers. Lek Wilson (25) with a solid 41 points, picked up 2nd place in the Ladies division. As the headline suggests, it was Todd Doss (+1) leading the way in A flight, +1 – 12, with his solid 37 points, after a back 9 of 31, to shoot 70, winning the Low Gross and an eagle 3 on 15. Tobias Garneij (12) edged Thankiat Keapawee 21/20 on countback for 2nd, after both signed for 36 points. Tobias picking up a technical also, while Thankiat had a HOLE in 1 on Lake 2, the 1st of this year, so a BIG shout out of thanks goes to Dez Chalice from Door to Door Food Delivery for his sponsorship of the Ace prize. B flight for handicaps 13 – 21 was won by Phil Davies (14) with 38 points, 1 clear of Donal McGuigan (20). Bronze medal position went to Hugo Jonserud (13) with 36 points after a series of countbacks, over Dave Shannon and Dennis Paul. C flight, for handicap 22>, saw the top spot go to Pierre Zbinden (234) with a day’s best for the men, of 40 points to go with his long putt prize on Mountain 5. A countback was equired to separate 2nd from 3rd, with Adam Hall (25) getting the nod over Marco Charvolin (29) 20/19, after both signed for 36 points. Special mentions go out to Michael Lohse for his 2 Long Drives in the under 54 division, and Bob Watson for his assortment of technical prizes, but collecting only the daily maximum of 2 prizes. Also to Dave and his team from the Sportsman, along with the great sponsorship provided by KPK Foods who did a fantastic job of keeping all the golfers and their guests satisfied in the food & drinks area. As we all look forward to another successful tournament contact Shane on 0863720084 or through Birdie at www.birdie.in.th to ensure your preferred tee time.

Like many of earth's creatures, fish are becoming endangered and sport fishing is being re-examined around the world. As a child I spent considerable time fishing on summer holidays down at Roseneath near Faslane. This always gave me an opportunity to hook a Nuclear Sub going past. When I was very young I would still fish off of the dock or from a boat when accompanied by my Dad. When I was a little older I would cast lures off of the dock or from the shore. When I learned to canoe I would troll the shorelines of the bays and islands for hours. I don't remember the ones that got away but I do feel regret for the ones I caught after learning more about fish.

Surprising Research Numerous studies have discovered that fish are actually more intelligent and social than we give them credit for and they are capable of feeling pain. The Roslin Institute and the University of Edinburgh led by Dr Lynne Sneddon found special sensory cells around the mouth of the fish similar to those in higher mammals that responded to pain. This is the reason I always carry a small bottle of iodine and use barbless hooks (Only stupidity and lack of experience allows the fish to get off) Many anglers justify fishing by claiming that fish are impervious to pain. Since they release all of the fish they catch no harm is done. But believing that the released animal will be fine is also wrong. Studies have shown that mortality is high among those fish caught and then released. The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute warns many fish die due to the physiological stress caused by the struggle during capture or from injuries caused by the hook that damage gills, eyes and internal organs. The wounds may not be apparent to the anglers. Many fish die even though unharmed due to severe exhaustion.

Anglers need to be educated An in-depth report by the Department of Material Science at the University of Maryland looked at the effectiveness of catch and release programs. Their conclusion was the high mortality rate was connected to poor application of the catch and release techniques on the part of anglers in combination with the different gears and lures. They recommended better angler education and fishing regulations.

Unwanted visitors Another problem is the devastating consequences for the ecosystems when alien species are introduced. Fishing can quickly spread these non-native species into lakes, rivers and other water bodies. The Rusty Crayfish and the Rudd, a European member of the minnow family, have likely made their way into Ontario waters as bait used by anglers. Pacific Northwest lakes and ponds were naturally fishless until bluegill and sunfish were brought into the area. Other species, such as the Spiny Water Flea, can be transported to inland lakes and rivers by hitching rides in live wells and other areas of boats as well as in bait buckets, on fishing lines and other equipment including downriggers, anchor ropes and fishing nets. They can also be transported by recreational watercraft and on boat trailers. Invading species is becoming such a major concern the Commission of Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has started a campaign entitled closing the pathways of aquatic invasive species across North America.

Hook, line and sinker Lost and discarded fishing tackle ( such as fishing line and lead sinkers) is also responsible for killing and harming animals such as loons and other water birds. Birds often swallow the sinkers while scooping up pebbles from the bottom of lake or river to help grind their food and become ill from lead poisoning. Eagles and other birds of prey can become ill after eating fish that have swallowed sinkers. Restrictions and bans of lead fishing sinkers and jigs are becoming more common in the United States and other countries. This all may sound doom and gloom but my father made sure that my brothers and I, were educated to slowly bring in fish on a line… Use Barbless Hooks… ALWAYS use antiseptic on the section your hook held … Be careful never to touch a fish gill… Hold a fish softly in the water as you release and let the fish decide when it has the energy to swim off. NEVER EVER TAKE A FISH FROM THE WATER AND KEEP UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO FEED YOU AND YOU’RE FAMILY

Thailand Super Series Rounds 7 & 8 – Chang International Circuit – Buriram “The winner ain’t the one with the fastest car, it’s the one who refuses to lose.”– Dale Earnhardt The final battle for the 2017 Drivers Title took place at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, with a lead of just 11 points from Khun Manat of the Toyota Team there was still a lot of work to be done to secure the title and a tense few days were ahead of them. Due to the ease of the previous wins, 30 kg of BOP (Balance of Performance) had been added to the Porsche 997, this meant in total there was an extra 80 kg of weight with which to race. With this in mind, the Team called on the services of their longtime long-distance Race Engineer Peter Jaeger A.K.A. Master Yoda. Peter was flown in from Denmark in time for the first practice sessions of the week to try and negate the disadvantages of driving a heavier car, his insight over the following days proved invaluable…

Practice Sessions The 30 kg BOP did not have to be added until the official practice session, this gave Peter precious time to calculate the best setup and weight distribution throughout the car. Peter decided the best course of action was to add 10 kg of BOP weight immediately to help Thomas get a feel for the car and provide essential data back to the team that would give a vital insight into how the car would perform with its full weight allocation. Thomas set about the 4.5 km circuit and although the handling was nothing he had felt before he still managed to clock a 1.44:07 putting him in P2. For the following session, further alignment and settings were tweaked to try to find a few extra tenths as the Toyota of Khun Manat was 0.7 seconds faster than Thomas. By the end of the third practice session, Peter’s insight had edged the team closer to within 0.4 of the Championship rival with Thomas posting a very impressive time of 1.44:035. As Friday's official practice session arrived so did the extra weight with the final 20 kg being added to the car, a couple of setup changes were made and the team were hopeful of a competitive time. Thomas didn’t disappoint putting the car again in P2 on the timing sheets with a 1.44:192.

Qualifying

It was vital that the team got a good position on the grid as even with an 11 point lead the Toyota with less weight was going to be extremely fast and hard to catch on a dry track. Thomas and Peter squeezed everything out of the Porsche 997 to record a time of 1:44.080 although this was an exceptional lap considering how much extra weight was in the car the team were still behind the Toyota of Khun Manat by a massive 0.8 seconds. Race 1 would be a tense affair with the Rotary Mazda RX7 of James Runacres hot on the heels in 3rd and looking for his first victory of the season.

Race 1 A light drizzle was a welcome sight on the first Race Day as any further rain around the lights out time would level out the playing field giving Thomas a chance to challenge for the top step of the podium, however, by late afternoon the rain had subsided and the sun shone brightly as the lights went out in Race 1. At the first corner, Thomas nearly edged out Khun Manat but had to leave room for the young Toyota driver by taking a wider line to maintain speed. Over the next 2 laps, James Runacres in the Rotary Mazda RX7 closed in and eventually overtook Thomas who valiantly fought back making a dive down the inside at turn five, unfortunately, both cars touched and were sent into separate spins with Thomas getting the car back on the track first albeit in 7th place. After that, the Danish Dynamo put down the hammer and made his way back up to a very commendable 3rd place. Khun Manat crossed the line with a healthy lead to TR-Motorsport teammate Khun Pete in the JWD Porsche Cayman. The win for Khun Manat left him just 3 points behind Thomas for the Championship. The mood in the team became very tense as thoughts switched to Sunday’s race and what if anything could be done to bring home the title in their debut season. The results from Race 1 had ensured that GTC Supercar Team Championship was secured with a massive point’s difference over second place, a fantastic achievement in their debut season. Now it was time to finish the game……

Race 2 After securing the Team Championship in Saturdays Race 1, the pressure was most definitely on to follow up with the drivers’ championship on Sunday. With Thomas only managing 3rd place in Race 1 and the Toyota of Khun Manat taking 1st the lead was reduced to just 3 points going into the final race of the season. One hour before the race the heavens opened over the Chang International Circuit producing a deluge of water onto the track for the earlier TCR race, although the rain stopped the track was still wet for the start of Race 2. Wet weather tires were selected and a few tweaks to the setup were made. As the lights when Green Thomas immediately started to challenge Khun Manat as they raced to the first corner but once again Thomas had to go wide to leave room and maintain momentum on the main straight. Thomas went in too deep at turn 3 forcing him wide on the exit and leaving him now in 4th, however, a massive charge down to turn 5 put him back in contention. A safety car was called out before the end of the first lap, which caused confusion for the cars chasing Khun Manat. He seemed to have a problem and slowed down so the chasing trio of Khun Pete, James and Thomas jumped at the chance and dived down the inside into turn 12. Thomas was however quickly informed by Chief Mechanic Sven Thummel to let the Toyota of Khun Manat back past him so not to incur a penalty, Thomas obliged and sat patiently behind them waiting for the safety car to come in. After 4 laps behind the safety car, the lights went green and Thomas once again started pressuring the Toyota of Khun Manat, overtaking him comfortably on the main straight. The conditions were perfect for the Rain Master Raldorf and within a couple of laps, he had overtaken the Rotary Mazda RX7 of James Runacres to take 2nd place in the race. As the laps counted down Thomas began to reel in the leader who happened to be Teammate Khun Pete in the Porsche Cayman. With four laps to go young James was challenging Khun Manat when all of a sudden the right rear tyre of the Toyota exploded destroying that area of the car and the resulting debris hitting and destroying the windscreen of the Mazda, fortunately, no driver was injured however both cars retired shortly after.

| MOTOR & MARINE Thomas was unaware what had happened behind him and continued to push on overtaking the Cayman of Teammate Khun Pete on the Pit Straight, much to the delight of the team watching from the Pit Wall and the sponsors and fans in the stands. The final laps soon counted down with Thomas crossing the line and taking the 20 points and the Drivers title and also taking the fastest lap with a time of 1.52:343 a massive 1.2 seconds quicker than anyone else. A sensational drive in tricky conditions by the Danish Dynamo in what was such a dramatic and perfect ending that only motorsport can produce.

one of the best drives of his career to bring home the spoils.

Scenes of jubilation quickly followed throughout the paddock as the team, sponsors and fans raced to the pit entrance to congratulate the new champion, who was soon treated to a champagne shower! For everyone associated with the team this season has been one hell of a ride from the initial heartbreak of the fuel pressure issues at the start of the season to the dominant double wins in Bang Saen & Buriram and then when all seemed against them for the final race Thomas delivered

Thank You Unixx TR-Motorsport would like to thank Khun Manat and Toyota for the challenges they brought this year and look forward to another close battle in 2018. The Final Drivers’ Standings were Thomas 137 Points, Khun Manat 114 Points. The Team would also like to thank all their gracious sponsors for whom without none of this could be possible and big thank you to all the fans who have traveled and supported the team throughout and shared their photos and experiences on social media. A special mention goes to Henk Kiks and his B-Quik Racing Team who have been magnificent in supporting TR-Motorsport throughout the season, their approach and professionalism are unequalled within the racing fraternity. MEDICAL INSURANCE hen people come and live in Thailand one of the things that is often neglected is medical insurance. In their home country they are so used to rolling up at their doctor or hospital and not having to pay anything out of their own pocket

Thailand is different. If you do not have medical insurance you will have to pay for treatment out of your own pocket. If you have neither any treatment needed will be withheld. The situation has got so bad the several of the Embassies have issued warnings about people being underinsured or not insured. I quote from the British Embassy warning of 1st February 2016: “Based on British Embassy figures in 2015, more than 80% of British residents in Thailand over the age of 51 who received consular assistance after being hospitalised did not have medical insurance, despite the relatively common need for medical care” Layla Slater MBE, HM Consul to Thailand said: “ Thailand is one of the top tourist and retirement destinations. Medical treatment can cost thousands of pounds and returning home may not be an option for everyone.. In many cases there will be a direct financial impact on family and friends. The British Embassy endeavours to work with charitable organisations and do everything we can to help people, but we cannot pay medical bills or fly people home. That is why we encourage people to make provision for their health and medical needs when choosing to live abroad, as it is the most reliable way to ensure that costs are covered” Whatever nationality you are it is essential that you have medical insurance. Unfortunately many people think “It will never happen to me”. However it does to a surprisingly high number of people. I have known of instances where treatment has cost over $100000. It is quite common if someone has been in an accident for the total cost to exceed $50000. When you consider that Thailand has the second highest death rates on the roads in the world and there are uninsured drivers everywhere accidents are a very common occurrence. You can obtain local medical insurance that can work out relatively cost effective or you might want to choose full international cover which costs more but has more extensive cover. Whatever your needs I recommend you get in touch with us as we can offer free impartial advice as well as being able to give the very best in quotes.

BUYING OFF-PLAN PROPERTIES “Off plan” purchase is the purchase of a property which has not been built yet or that does not actually exist or is currently under construction at the time the contract is signed and the decision to buy is made with only the location and proposed building plans available for assessment.

BENEFITS • Most property developers offer very attractive payment terms allowing you to pay a small deposit which may be settled in several flexible terms and the balance does not need to be paid until the property has been built which provides buyers with time to plan their finances. • Buyers who purchase in the early phase of a development have the opportunity to choose the best units which, in time, offer highest capital appreciation, and will also generate the greatest rental incomes. • The prices of off-plan properties are usually very competitive and can be locked at the market price as of the contract date. Properties appreciate in value between the period of buying to the date the project is completed. Properties purchase closer to completion will be more expensive than those purchased early because as the demand rises and more units are sold, the prices of all the remaining units also increases.

RISKS

• Buying a property that you cannot physically see or inspect is already a significant risk. This means that you will not know the

www.pattayatrader.com

By Magna Carta Law Office

appearance and quality until the construction is finished. • Project delays or the developer goes bankrupt before completion creating a possibility that the project and contract could be cancelled. Some property developers do not have their own funds but instead sources fund from the buyers and other financial institutions. • Sometimes a developer may not have received pre-approval. The design or dimensions of the property may change to achieve EIA and committee approval. • It is possible that after the property has been constructed, the valuation of the property may be worth less than what you paid for. Legal advice must be obtained before signing any document or paying any money. Due Diligence significantly helps to reduce the risks involved in buying off-plan properties as it is a useful tool for estimating the status of a prospective project and the developer. It is essential to be aware of any pending or potential legal action involving the property and to make sure that the developer has all of the required permits and legal documentations for the project. The need for thorough due diligence is recommended prior to the signing of a binding contract. It is recommended that you have a lawyer in Thailand to review the contract drafted by the seller to ensure it is prepared with proper terms and conditions that meet the standard terms as required by relevant laws and confirm that the contract does not contain terms of any hidden cost and drawbacks.

Market Timing I

t has been well said that market timing is dangerous for those who want to make money on their stock picks. What you are trying to do is to leave the market entirely during downturns and reinvest when it heads back up. A crystal ball would be a great aid to anyone who adopts this strategy. If any reader has a rule that allows them to regularly know a market has peaked please let me know. Additionally tell me know how you know a market is ready to take off again before it actually does as it’s a mystery to me. So how has market timing become such a hot topic recently? Well market volatility is a contributing factor. Watching the satellite money channels where a world collapse is the topic one day and the coming boom the next has added further to the mix. Do you remember 30 years ago when clients invested money and the next time they got a valuation was a year later probably by being posted a current (probably out of date by a month) valuation? No one wants to go back that far and have to deal with an antiquated system but for many in the long term it worked. When a client who has a retirement pot sits down with a broker and discusses his needs, the first subject broached is investment timeframe. In other words they plan so that the client can take a monthly income and in fifteen or twenty years when he or she passes on the balance of the estate it is then passed, usually in trust, to their beneficiaries. They then discuss attitude to risk and as a general rule a portfolio is drawn up comprising speculative, balanced and secure investments. Many times the mix is determined by the client’s age and risk aversion. Whatever that comprises, the portfolio is put in gear and the plan is then to keep to that strategy with minor adjustments and balances throughout the life of the investment. When the client is retired and has plenty of time on his hands he may begin watching the satellite channels and after a few months start panicking predicting a market crash. He then contacts his broker to dissolve the original

strategy by switching into secure funds but instead of the markets crashing they jump ahead and consequently he misses out on substantial growth. Unfortunately stock prices do not always move for the most logical or easily predictable of reasons. An unexpected event can send a stock price up or down and you can’t predict those movements. The internet stock bull market of the late 1990’s was a good example of what happens when investors in the excitement of the moment consciously or not, become market timers. Everyone had a hot tip about the next big thing and investors were jumping on stocks as they shot up. Unfortunately most of these rockets came crashing down just as quickly and many investors held on way too long. The disastrous result was an exact reversal of what they hoped. In the end it was a case of” buying high and selling low”. You don’t need to know anything about investing to know this was not a successful strategy. For most investors the chance to time the market is a mythical one. As I’ve already said timing the market is a dangerous strategy. The only factor that really works is time in the market. That’s what makes clients money and on looking back to the Eighties before clients could get valuations on their mobile phones that was what happened. I’m not decrying modern technology-it has made all of our lives easier. After all to type this article and send it to the publisher is really easy compared with changing typewriter ribbons and posting the text. And I fully understand a client’s urgency in wanting to take steps to avoid losses. However I think the answer is at the outset the advisor must try and match the client’s risk tolerance to the selected funds and make sure to explain that the 130% gained last year in an emerging market fund will carry a cost of high risk and will not be available on money market funds.
