Keeping Cool This Summer
W
ell as the Peak Season and the cooler temperatures are now behind us, we can look forward to the “Summer” and soaring temperatures. Forecasters are predicting that this year it is going to be a rough ride and temperatures of 45 degrees plus has been bandied around which in old money equates to 113 degrees fahrenheit.
A few months ago I wrote an article on how to keep your pets cool, but as one of our readers glibly suggested, “What about us humans?” This began my thinking of just how do we keep cool when we are out and about in the scorching sun? Like our furry friends it is even more important than usual that we keep hydrated and if going on any car journeys essential that extra bottles of water always be included for the ride. For those of us who are retired or on holiday, a leisurely stroll to the beach and a pleasant shady spot to sit will suffice and a nice iced coffee or cold beer may be the only addition needed. But what happens when you are downtown doing a spot of shopping at the market or crammed in a baht bus coming home from Tukom.? Are there any bolt-holds that are available dotted around that can act as relief stops whilst you are outdoors? My first suggestion would be your local 7/11 shop. I fully recommend a quick cool off in Thailand’s favourite shop as their air conditioning is superb, I often partake of a breath of cool air during my working day as the air conditioning is not the best at my desk, so a quick five or ten minutes browsing the shelves looking at various items is ideal. Some branches including the Chaiyapruk one, also make iced frappes and other assorted cool drinks. The benefit of ordering one of these is that it normally takes a good fifteen minutes to prepare, and there is always a number of like minded coolists to engage in conversation. However 7/11 is not the only heat haven, I would also thoroughly recommend Findig, Family Mart, Watsons and of course the large Malls. The key to this strategy is to plan your route meticulously, and ensure there are sufficient heat havens along your way. Don’t give way to the temptation of actually shopping, as dragging your bags around will only add to your problems. A trip to the cinema is a sure fire way to cool down. Whereas during the rest of the year the air conditioning can be likened to provide that of arctic temperatures so much so that you can often need to take a jumper in with you.

EXPAT LIVING However at the hottest time of the year it could be just the place to be, although don’t forget to stand up for the national anthem that is played before each film. Or you could take a dip - the beauty of life in Thailand is that you are never too far from the sea a stroll down to the beach may reward you with a slight sea breeze or even better a trip to a local island like Koh Larn will be refreshing on the journey there and back as well as a few degrees cooler on the island than in the centre of town. However even if you are in Pattaya proper and feel the need to dip your feet in the water you’re really never very far away from a swimming pool. In fact if you flip the book and look in this month’s Property Trader there are plenty of ideas for where to find pools in town or even think about adding one to your own property. Many people already enjoy the weekly ritual of having a massage Thai or Oil when the masseuse through a combination of pressure and semi yoga poses will help you leave feeling invigorated and refreshed. However even if you feel that just a foot massage would be the thing when you have been on your feet far too long and they feel hot and dusty. Entering the tranquil calm of a massage place will not only provide an ideal hideaway from the heat for the time you are there it will also been you are refreshed and ready to cope with the onslaught of hot air as you step back outside. Always remember almost anything can be used in your plight to keep cool. Do not ignore anything whatsoever, even good old fashioned dirt. If you have a spade and a willing helper then any patch of land near you can be utilised.Simply dig a trench and stack the walls high with the soil that has been removed. Then fill up the trench with water, the ensuing mud filling up the hole transforms the trench into the ideal Mud Pool. My idea came from the Discovery Channel with a program on Hippopotamuses in Africa. Although they did not actually dig their own Mud Pool, the happy creatures seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, and David Attenborough was adamant that they were keeping cool by rolling around in the mud. Mud, mud glorious mud Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood So follow me follow, down to the hollow And there let me wallow in glorious mud Remember, keep cool out there, and I will see you all in 7/11.

An extract from founder member Pat Burbridge's recollections of “PILC The Early Years”.
1961 was the year I came to live in Thailand. I worked in Bangkok for various companies and met my husband Bill, there. After 10 years, which included one year in Iran, we decided to make Pattaya our home. We opened the first scuba diving facility here and ran that for almost 30 years. I also had a second job, with Pan Am selling military airline tickets at Utapao. In the early seventies the Laem Chabang Deepwater port opened bringing a rapid buildup all along the Eastern Seaboard. Foreign companies brought in their people for installation, startup and eventually hand-over of the various industries. The foreign community who were actually working here was quite large, and there were many wives who had accompanied their husbands and found themselves in this exotic country with loads of time on their hands. Besides making shopping trips to Bkk for basic essentials, having pot-luck parties, playing golf and tennis and bowling, the other activity they took very seriously – and the only one I was able to join in regularly - was exploring all the restaurants on both of Pattaya’s roads. So we would meet once or twice a month to try a different lunch spot each time. As our numbers grew, from about 7 or 8 to almost 20, we started to look like a club. I was the one who fought that…..I didn’t want our little group to get all clubby, with rules and meetings, and all of that stuff. But, inevitably, our ‘fun’ group grew to the point where we actually needed to be a bit more organized. Fortunately some of the ladies had already been involved in clubs back in their hometowns, so with their experience we formed a club and selected our name. We had no headquarters, no fixed meeting place, and the only constant mailing address and telephone number was mine as I was the only fixed face in Pattaya. We also began to realise that here was all this good energy, this valuable resource that comes about whenever a group of women meet regularly; it seemed like such a waste if we didn’t do something useful with it. Fr. Ray Brennan had already opened the orphanage and we learned of other causes which could benefit from our efforts. As our numbers grew, our little group naturally evolved into a forum for women away from home who could assist and advise each other, meet people from many countries, and provide opportunities to learn about their new home. At one point, during the massive buildup of the Eastern Seaboard, our membership swelled to over 300 so we became a force to be reckoned with and establishments actually welcomed our business. I would just like to finish by saying how honored I am to have been a part of the Pattaya International Ladies Club. How proud I am of how far we’ve come, what we’ve accomplished, and continue to seek to accomplish. I served as secretary and treasurer for several terms but my answer to ‘why not president?” was simple. As I’ve always had to work, and still do, I have never been in a position where I could give up one whole year of my normal life…..because that’s what it takes. I’m sure there are many husbands who wish the year would quickly be over so they can have their wives back in their lives. So, my hat goes off to all our presidents, past, present and future. PILC thanks you and your hard working board members for your dedication and service to us members and the community. If you are interested in joining Pattaya Ladies club go to their website:

DR PETER LEWIS
By Gloria Jones
S
o almost one year on from my last interview with Dr Peter Lewis I found myself again at the the bright, light clinic within the grey building at the top of Soi 6 to ask him what has been happening at Surecell and in particular at the Pratumnak Clinic since last we met.. Certainly in terms of getting to see Dr Peter I found that he is just as busy as ever jetting around the world between his clinics in Australia, Bangladesh and here in Thailand. In fact Dubai, Laos and India has also been added to his travel itinerary where there are exciting developments. He still manages to regularly visit the Pratumnak centre for at least two days a month in order to train and recruit new doctors and member of staff whilst generally spreading the word to the public about PRP and stem cell therapy. In fact look out for him as a regular speaker at many of the expat clubs explaining how Surecell are world leaders
in regenerative medicine and how they might be able to help you. Obviously informing and educating people on the benefits of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) over the last year has worked as it is now far more widely known and practiced. Even whilst I was talking to him there were constant calls for him to just have a quick chat or give advice, before returning to the interview. Last year the majority of the Pratumnak Clinic’s patients were having knee, hip and shoulder joints treated but a more recent development has been the increasing number of new visitors with back problems. This is because as Dr Lewis says: “The general treatment of back problems is a brief consultation, a scan and then treatment of the abnormality reported in the scan. Everyone over the age of 50 will have some disc degeneration in their scan. It is a natural part of aging. Hospitals rarely do more than use a scan for diagnosis. We should be giving the patient a proper physical examination and spending time talking to them about their pain and their lifestyle and habits. Traditional doctors rarely address the underlying cause of back pain ” This highlights a major difference when patients are treated at the Pratumnak clinic where the approach is far more personal and holistic. As leaders in the field of regenerative medicine their advice will often extend to recommendations of cutting out sugary foods and white rice while including more fish and green vegetables in the diet and getting on that exercise bike ! Apart from advice on diet and lifestyle, hormonal supplements may be recommended as well as PRP and stem cell treatment. Surecell endeavor to treat the causes of disease and to get to the root of underlying problems before they become major complaints. Dr Peter believes that prescribing pain killing drugs is a lazy, dangerous and all too common “cure all”. In the US alone over 13,000 people a year die from heroin overdose. 50% of new users have become addicted to narcotics because of prescription pain killers, often for common complaints such as back pain. Peter even told me of one case where :“A so called expert advised ‘Don’t wait for the pain. When you get up in the morning immediately take 4 Methadone tablets before the pain kicks in! “ Continual use of such medication can also affect testosterone levels as it eventually shuts down pituitary excretion in the body. This in fact is another sensitive area that Dr Peter is being asked more and more to treat. The clinic has patients enjoying such amazing results that while I was there he had one man leave his surgery doing a little happy dance and another grasping him firmly by the hand to express thanks for the major improvement to his life. So if you feel that you would like to avail yourself of some regenerative medicine then the best thing to do would be firstly book an appointment with Dr Kris an orthopedic surgeon now at the centre, or Dr Patrick who will be able to access your needs and help you with a treatment plan.

waterfalls and marvellous walking tracks that open up new vistas at every turn.Life in Pai is at a snail’s pace, and is far removed from the bustling towns and cities of central and southern Thailand. For the more adventurous there are plenty of places to explore from stunning waterfalls, to bat infested caves. Take a trip to Mo Paeng waterfall, where you can cool off in the mountain water, later travel to Sai Ngam hot springs and finally the caves.
B
efore you know it, it is that time of year that sends people scurrying for cover and running for the air conditioning. Yes it is time again, love it or hate it, that summertime is here. And with temperatures scheduled to reach the mid 40s, it is forecasted that this year is going to be a hot one. As the temperatures start to soar, is there an alternative destination that is a tad cooler than Pattaya and the rest of the Central Region? My advice as the hot season rapidly approaches is to head north. Look towards the mountainous regions around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.The climate up in this part of Thailand is cooler than the rest of the kingdom, the architecture is different, and even the food differs from the rest of the country. Northern Thailand has its own distinct feel to it, it has many beautiful and interesting places to visit as well as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Take a trip to the remote town of Mae Hong Son, which is just a few kilometers from the border with Myanmar.
If you keep travelling north and slightly west then you will come across Chiang Rai. It is one of my favourite areas in Thailand. This is the most northern region of the Kingdom and has been defined by many of the surrounding lands, territories and peoples. To the west of the Chiang Rai are the mountains of Doi Mae Salong, Doi Chang and Doi Tung, and they look down on the town with glorious menace and are strikingly beautiful. The mountains give way to a broad, lush valley that stretches all the way to Laos and the Mekong River. There are plenty of things to do and see in this wondrous green country, including a trip to visit the numerous hill-tribes and their stupendous way of life. The area is ideal for trekking and there are many tea and coffee plantations to explore and visit. The temples around Chiang Mai are stunning including the famous Wat Rong Khun otherwise known as The White Temple. Even if you are not particularly into visiting temples, this is certainly one that will captivate you. If you have yet to discover wonderful northern Thailand, then the hot season is a perfect time to do it. The hospitality is second to none and the scenery is breathtaking, so what are you waiting for?
Mae Hong Son is an extremely attractive place, situated in a narrow valley with steep forested hills that seem to crowd the isolated hamlet. In the centre of Mae Hong Son is a picturesque lake that attracts many visitors for an evening stroll or a tasty picnic. The buildings that surround the lake include Shan-style temples and old teak houses that cling to the hillside, perched precariously on the slopes. Slightly to the northwest of Mae Hong Son is Pai, and the small town is simply enchanting. Pai nestles in the mountains, surrounded by

I remember when I first heard from my Thai friends how many holidays they were given annually that I was quite aghast to learn most of them received only six days a year or if they were lucky perhaps seven or eight. It was not until my first year of living in the kingdom that I began to understand the reasoning behind this. Namely that it was because the number of national holidays that exist in Thailand, far more when compared to say America, UK or most of Europe. This is cemented when you look at May in particular when there are three public holidays in the month. May 1st is Labour Day, Friday the 5th is Coronation Day and Wednesday the 10th is Visakha Bucha Day.The three days have completely different reasons for their celebrations; political, religious and state, but this is typical of Thailand. Its people have empathy with many different religions, political causes and in the main are staunchly loyal to their monarchy.
National Labour Day - Wan Raeng Ngaan Haeng Chaat National Labour Day has been a public holiday in Thailand since 1935, it is a day to recognise the significance and achievements of Thai workers. It is celebrated as more of a fun day than a political one, and generally most people take the extra day off to relax and spend time with their families. In some towns and cities there are also parades and official celebrations, again this is not to make specific political statements but to show public recognition of their fellow workers.
Coronation Day - Wan Chattra Mongkhon Four years after becoming King, Bhumibol Adulyadej was crowned Rama IX of Thailand in the Grand Palace on 5th May 1950, making him the ninth king of the Chakri dynasty. The actual ceremony took place over three days, it began with Buddhist monks holding a service in honour of the Chakri dynasty at the Grand Palace. The following day the head of the Brahmin read out a proclamation of the coronation that actually took place on the 5th.
Visakha Bucha Day This is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar, as the moon of the month of Vaisakh has special significance because on this day the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and also attained nirvana when he died. Although Buddha was believed to have been born on April the 8th, the exact date has been a point of contention. The day is observed as a holy day, shops, bars and restaurants are banned from selling alcohol and all government offices are closed.

EXPAT LIVING Whilst all Thai public holidays are observed by government agencies, bank holidays are regulated by the Bank of Thailand. Obviously these holidays often cross over, but are not always are the same.Thailand usually has sixteen public holidays a year, but this can and often does vary slightly. Other observances, official and unofficial, religious and local events are also honoured to varying degrees around the kingdom. If we take sixteen days as the norm, then Thailand has been cited by Mercer (data finance firm) as the world’s third top country in terms of national days off. Joint top of the current list are India and Colombia, which have a very generous 18 days public holidays and rock bottom is Mexico, with a measly 7 days. The UK, Netherlands and Hungary only fare slightly better with 8 days whilst Serbia, Switzerland, Ireland and Germany are joint third bottom on nine. Trying to analyse the general reasoning as to why certain countries appreciate their citizens more is quite difficult. In the main the data would support that the Europeans and Americans are the biggest “Bah Humbug’s,” and begrudgingly let their citizens have “one or two hours off a century”! Whilst the Asian countries in the main are far more generous, and obviously religion is a main contributing factor. Buddhism likes to celebrate big events in its history and such events are revered strongly by its followers therefore deserving acknowledgement. The Thai nation are by far the best party goers in the world, any reason for a get together and a knees-up is grasped with two eager hands. So it is hardly surprising that the Thai New Year is celebrated with a three day national holiday. A little different than returning back to work on January the 2nd as in most western countries, with just one resented day’s leave having been begrudgingly granted. The family and returning home is a big reason for this. During Songkran the whole kingdom is a place of transience. Internal flights are full, and roads all over the country are gridlocked with people criss crossing the Thai countryside all trying to return back to their families and friends. Why do the UK, America and most of Europe have the worst holidays in the world? This is a simple question to answer and it is all based on the theory of the economy and money. It is cited that less commerce is generated when the banks and stock exchanges are closed. In my limited economic schooling, I always thought that the same money is spent, saved and circulated in a fiscal year no matter how many days the financial institutions decide to close. However, in any case, we are most fortunate to be living in a country that respects its citizens, and understands that corporate profits are not the be all and end all. Whilst investigating the Thai national holidays it came to mind to have a look at what other nations have in terms of national holidays in May. The UK celebrate May Day which dates back to Roman celebrations of the upcoming summer. On May 17th in Norway it is “Syttende Mai” or Constitution Day and the celebrations on this day even eclipse New Year’s Eve. In South Korea on the 5th May, it is Children’s Day and the county’s youth are celebrated, whilst in Mexico on the same day they are celebrate “Cinco de Mayo” which is a historical military win over France. All over the world, nations come together to celebrate a unique day in their country’s history, these National Holidays reinforce the identity and values of the community, and bring family and nations together. Enjoy your time off in May, and embrace the reasons why the days have been designated as national holidays.

Australian - Reds
F
or a long time the wines of Australia were termed: New World Wines. This caused traditional European wine growing countries to treat Australian wine with some disdain and not that much respect. However, early settlers from France, Italy and Spain introduced Australia to winemaking and many taught the traditional winemaking techniques and methods of their old countries. Since those early days, Red wine in particular has been making great inroads in Australia and the quality of the produce has been gaining more and more acceptance amongst the world’s wine elite.
Today, Australia’s winemakers are some of the best on the planet, producing some of the finest Red wine available today. The leading wine regions are: Barossa and Clare Valleys in South Australia, the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, the Yarra Valley in Victoria, the Margaret River region in Western Australia, and the Freycinet Peninsula in Tasmania. They are all producing fantastic wine from a number of grape varieties.
Merlot Merlot is a highly popular grape with producers as it is fairly easy to grow and ripens a week earlier than most, it also produces a high yield. Many growers include Merlot in their crop selection as it is an excellent backup product and it will consistently survive adverse weather. Also Merlot is often used to blend with other grape varieties as it has qualities of plum, liquorice and chocolate, and in years of bad yield it can pad out other less hardy grape varieties.
Pinot Noir
Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon is sometimes classed the “Monarch of all Grapes”. Predominantly used in the Bordeaux area of France for centuries as a foundation of the famous Claret wines,it is thought to have first appeared in Australia in the 1830’s. Today it is successfully grown across the country, in particular in the Yarra Valley and the Margaret River region where the wines produced are recognised around the world for their quality. When Cabernet Sauvignon is mature it has a bouquet of blackberry, plum and cherry, with time it has a deep flavour of port, caraway, aniseed and coffee. Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent wine for putting down and cellaring.
A popular grape with many wine enthusiasts for the complexity of flavours and variety of vintage. Pinot Noir is one of the most difficult varieties of grape to grow, and its flavour takes on more from its terroir than other varieties. This means the wine can taste quite different from one vineyard to the next. The Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley and Geelong are particularly highly regarded as this grape does not like extreme temperatures and the climate in these two regions is ideal.
Shiraz The origins of this grape were thought to emanate from Persia, although there is a school of thought that says the grape was actually first grown in France. In fact it is also a grape that flourishes in the climate of Australia when even in low fertile soils it produces large quantities of fruit on single vines. The Shiraz grape is known for its deep plum colour, with a slightly peppery flavour, and is a very versatile grape. Left to ripen fully, the peppery qualities develop into a nose of stewed plums and dark cherry. After that, flavours of port, chocolate and coffee often appear when the fruit is very ripe.

Gerry’s Bar & Restaurant
F
or those readers who are fortunate enough to live in the Pratumnak area, there is a delightful watering hole on soi 4 that you should really pop in to and say “Hello”.
Gerry’s Bar & Restaurant is an Irish Pub that could easily remind you of your local back in Dublin. The welcoming reception is warm, friendly and genuine, and the craic is what you would expect from such an establishment. But as well as serving fine beers and spirits, including draft Stowford Press cider, Gerry’s is simply great for food. The menu is simple, fine Irish and British food with a good Thai selection. Whilst I was there, the people on the next table were tucking into a hearty All Day Small Breakfast, this included 2 eggs, 1 bacon, 1 sausage, tomato, orange juice, coffee / tea, and toast. The portions were considerable and I wondered just how big the larger option was. I opted for the Breakfast Gammon, which arrived sizzling on my plate, accompanied by two perfectly fried eggs, a small portion of chips and some toast. The gammon was crisp and salty, just as it is supposed to be, and I regretted not having a pint of Guinness to wash it down with, but it was still only 10am.!

Gobbling down my delicious breakfast I perused the menu to see what other delights were available. There are homemade soups of all descriptions, tempting looking Fish & Chips with a choice of Atlantic Cod or John Dory. For those that like their traditional food, Gerry’s offer a good choice of gut busting home cooked dishes such as: Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Lamb Stew, Chicken Curry, Bangers & Mash, Liver & Bacon, Boiled Bacon & Cabbage, Assorted Meat Pies and of course Burgers. There are also juicy T-Bone steaks for an evening dinner, complete with pepper sauce or gravy and all the trimmings. And for those who would prefer a lighter lunch or snack, salads, wings, nuggets and side dishes are all available. As you would expect Gerry’s is a great place to watch the footy and other live sports on their flat screen TVs. The atmosphere is laid back and casual, and there is often a good mix of regulars enjoying a cold beer and tucking into to some fabulous home cooked food.

The Football Season So Far
The Premier League As we go to print the Premier League is not quite done and dusted as there are still weeks 32 to 38 to play. However only a fool would back against Chelsea as the four times previous Premier League Champions are due to be crowned for a fifth. There are perhaps two major reasons for this success; firstly and certainly a major contributing factor is their new manager for the 2016 / 2017 season, Antonio Conte. The animated touchline genius has brought amusement to many with his OTT activities cheering and goading his team on but the formation of a back three was a stroke of genius as he recognised he had the perfect trio of Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta to play it. And with one of the finest goalkeepers in the league, Thibaut Courtois behind them, the formation has proven to be near impregnable. Chelsea had well and truly parked the bus, and benefited with many clean sheets, and carried no passengers. The second is that Chelsea have had only the league and domestic football to focus on with no European distractions and extra mid-week games to far flung places, their squad has remained fit and intact. This cannot be said of some of their top six competitors who have had tough Champions League and Europa League fixtures, and consequently suffered with squad injuries But fair play, Chelsea have played with flair and attacked with the ferocity of a last orders call in a Glaswegian pub. Victor Moses has been parting defences in waves, and Diego Costa has been his normal grizzly, brooding and menacing self. So what about last year’s defending Champions? The Nation’s and Thailand’s favourite second team, Leicester City, have made an utter hash of their defence. To the point of having to battle with relegation. Claudio Ranieri who was formerly cited as possible mayor of Leicester was axed without ceremony. Many were disgusted by his treatment as when the most successful manager in the 133 year history of the midlands club was shown the back door, some said he should have remained as manager for as long as he wanted. Shame on many of the players he made into household names. The relegation fight has been as fiercely fought as any season, but Sunderland once again have been floundering. Even with the addition of new dour new manager David Moyes they really have performed dismally. Newcomers Hull City and Middlesbrough have also found the going really tough and struggled in the most competitive league in the world.

The Championship Round-Up
As bad as they were last season, Newcastle were unstoppable under Rafa Benitez’s guidance. They went on one of their longest unbeaten runs for over twenty years and defeated just about anybody that came up against them. The other Premiership big gun that was relegated, fared a lot differently. Aston Villa to say the least had a bitterly disappointing season and their average home attendances dropped by nearly ten thousand fans. It will be interesting how their supporters will react next season still in the Championship. As we go to print Brighton top the league with Newcastle just behind them by two points. Reading, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Fulham and Preston are all likely to compete in the play offs. Brighton, Huddersfield, Leeds United, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday ………….compete for playoffs.
The Champions League Spills and Thrills were the order of the day in the Champions League this season. Once again the big Spanish clubs were dominant, and perhaps Barca’s win against PSG was one of the most thrilling games of the competition. The quarter finals are due to be played on the 12th & 13th of April, and representing Spain will be three teams. The big two, Barcelona and Real Madrid are joined by Atletico Madrid and all three have managed to avoid one another in the draw. Undoubtedly the tie of the round is Bayern Munich against Real Madrid, which has installed Barcelona as favourites to win the trophy. The English representation in the competition was to say the least poor, with a particularly dismal showing from Arsenal, leading to the “should he go or stay” arguement over Wenger. Remarkably Leicester City, with all their problems are the last English team representing the Premiership. Their away draw at the Estadio Vicente Calderon in Madrid does give them a glimmer of hope, although their odds at 33-1 make them rank outsiders. But all I can say is remember last year!
The Europa League As always the Europa League took its toll on many teams competing. For many years now the format of this second tier European competition has been causing many people to doubt its validity. In which other competition do a number of new entrants suddenly appear half way through? Especially those that have failed in another competition and been booted out. The amount of games that some teams have to endure to reach the final stages, often has a direct effect on their domestic league performances. Injuries and fatigue take their toll and surely a reconsideration of the Europa League’s format should be implemented, otherwise it may go the same way as the F.A Cup, or that other one…..what was its name? At this stage of the competition, Manchester United are the firm favourites to lift the trophy, and their quarter-final away leg against Anderlecht should be enough to see them into the semi-finals. Olympique Lyonnais are possibly the Red Devil’s main rivals in the competition, but they face a tough Besiktas team at home in the first leg. Possibly the tie of the round is Dutch giants Ajax facing off against the powerhouse German team Schalke.

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold Big Scores for Winners 163 players, including 16 ladies, made the short journey this month to the Phoenix course, where we played the Lakes & Ocean combination. Although the weather was warm, there was a steady breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace. We played from the white tee markers today, with some being well forward, but still the course was the same challenge for all, although the integrity of the course may have been lessened for handicapping purposes. As with most months there is 1, or sometimes several outstanding performances for the tournament. This month special mentions should go to the Ladies Winner & Runner Up, who also won a technical prize each. Jeeranan Duncan (18) scored an equal day’s best of 43 points to lead the way, to go with her Long Putt on 11, while Samorn Tanamsri (18) signed for 40 points to go with the Ladies Long Drive. The C flight of handicaps 20+, if you didn’t score 42points as a minimum, you were not in the prizes. John Hughes (20) led the way home after edging Kjell Ahlund (28) on countback to the last 6 holes 15/13, after both signed for 43 points, with John also getting the technical on Lakes #6. Kevin Johnson (21) hit the minimum 42 points for placings in this flight to get 3rd spot. The B flight, for handicaps 14 - 19, was tightly contested, with all placegetters separated by only 1 point. Butch Porter (15) was the clear winner on 43 points, while 2nd and 3rd had to be decided on countback. Manny Deftereos (16) and John Anderson (17) both recorded 42 points and the countback being decided on the last 6 holes 16/14. Manny getting the better of the countback, to supplement his Long Drive on #9. The A flight 0 – 13, kept up the tight decisions for the day, while the scores were not as high as in the other flights. Lennart Larsson (13) scored 40 points, with a back 9 of 22, to beat Michel Delatraz (12) for top spot, after Michel recorded 19 on the back 9. 3 players signed for 39 points, before Charles Marquez (11) was declared the 3rd placegetter. Steve Truelove & Bob Edwards were the unsuccessful participants, but both compensated with technical prize success. Low Gross for the day went to Kevin MackIntosh with his 76, on countback the last 6 holes over Mark Johnson. Special mentions goes out to Philippe Chalot, holing his 2nd shot on the par 4 Lakes #8 to win the technical prize, and record a 2 for 6 points on his card. Multiple winners in the technical prizes, getting the maximum 2 prizes, was limited to Warren Wood. Dave was absent from the BBQ this time, but Darren together with his capable staff, kept all attendees well satisfied with their tasty offerings for the night. We will all look forward to another successful tournament scheduled for 29th March, again at Phoenix, so get your preferred timeslot by booking with Shane on 0863720084.

GO FISHING – “NO WAY JOSE” The Highlander
H
aving fished and won tournaments on some of the richest coarse fishing canals and lakes in Ireland for Future Image Dublin, it was only right that fishing the lakes of Pattaya would be on the cards after my move from Bangkok.
At the age of 7 I was bloodied on the banks of the River Clyde on the rich farmlands known to many as “Clydeside” (between Hamilton and the town of Lanark). I remember the excitement of the early rise and my father’s footballing friends having a “Wee Dram” and a square sausage sandwich, to keep out the chill on a Boxing Day morning. My father played for Celtic, Preston NE, Scotland and the greatest team on earth “Motherwell” So if I say that Matt Busby, Bill Shankley, Jimmy Delaney and half the guys from Kellys Pub in Mossend were engrossed in a bottle of Dimple Whisky, then it’s easy to see that we were in good company. To be honest half of them were not even there to fish and for those of you reading this article who might say “Fishing is Boring” well how wrong canyou be ! Smelly herrings were attached to two treble hooks on wire and tied on with red wool. They were then cast into the middle of the river and the rods were sat on a raised rod rests… “ALWAYS take off the drag son” Dad said and how true that was whenever I fished for Big Pike. Also my dad would set up all the other guys’ rods apart from 3 or 4 and they all seem to say the same thing before retiring to the bankside and the cooker cooking bacon. Having some mighty craic they would say… “Good Man Goldie” (Ales Goldie Millar) as they sipped from their hip flasks.. “Which rods mine ?”. In further editions I will let you know how that day progressed and in fact every Boxing Day after, failing none no matter what country I fell into. However first I need to explain why this excursion points to Thailand and fishing here.Just 10 mins away from my condo on Chaiyapreuk Road, while out scouting for somewhere to fish, I came across a little lake. I have tried many of these man made fisheries but Big Stock Fish that jump on your hook every 2 seconds just does not float my boat… Wild, Natural fish are harder to catch but give a better feeling of achievement than anything else. On the lake I met 2 Thai anglers. These guys should be in fishing tournaments because their skill is second to none and it’s worth just sitting and watching them. Even though they could not speak a word of English and my Thaiis limited, we still managed to understand what bait and methods they were adopting. They gave me a share of the little strips of pork they were using and showed me how their small net they threw in caught small fish to catch the “Big Boys”… Badoop (Wild Catfish)...I fished away for small fish about 6 meters out (Similar to perch back home) while the Thai boys caught their Mums and Dads. Fishing just ain’t the same without the odd refreshment and lunch so I jumped on the bike and grabbed 3 bottles of chilled Leo from the nearest 7 and shared the Spam and Cheese rolls with the boys..K.Sumet and K.Lek… It was this that reminded me of that cold morning on the Clyde fishing with my dad and his close friends. Over the coming editions I will try and win over the guys who say “Me, Fishing – NEVER” and explain why sitting on a bank, beside a wild lake, clears the head, opens up your mind to the hearts of the Thai locals around you...but more importantly, give you a reason to do something other than watching gardening programs on a TV in a Sports Bar. Pattaya Personality - Kwaang I have always liked the Pratumnak Hill area and even though there were ominous grey clouds overhead when I visited there recently it was even more of a treat to go as I was on my way to meet a young lady I had never met before. Siripoom Boonmamuang (or Kwaang) was only previously known to me as half of the famous Pattaya People Party Patrol . The dampness of the breeze hurried my step as I looked for the New Nordic Steaks & Grill Restaurant, which is part of New Nordic Group’s Hotel Concept Marcus. My editor had previously told me to look out for the two large elephants by the entrance so seeing a stone bench I took advantage of it and waited. Barely had I been sitting for a couple of minutes when a smiling young women came to greet me. This was my first my encounter with Kwaang, although it felt more like meeting an old friend because of the amount of times I had seen her presenting the famous Party Patrol segway on TV. We made our way to the New Nordic Steaks & Grill restaurant, where we took advantage of a comfortable table overlooking the courtyard below, a few sleepy Marcus residents were finishing late breakfasts and discussing their day ahead. Whilst ordering refreshments from the attentive waiter, my editor timed her entrance impeccably to order a fresh cappuccino. Then once we were all suitably relaxed and sipping our Javas we got down to business. Having seen Kwaang on TV I had formed an opinion that she had a bubbly persona as she always came across full of life and verve and within minutes this opinion was confirmed. However I could soon sense that there was far more to Kwaang than simply a media queen. Hailing from Chiang Mai, she majored in law at university because it was her mother’s wish that a young Siripoom pursue a career in the government or the police. The problem was that Kwaang did not like her studies one little bit in fact studying law simply bored her. This news was not well received by her mother, who was struggling to bring up a young family by herself and Kwaang had a touch of conscience about letting her down, and so she did not refuse her mother’s request that she start working in a bank. It was however a decision she came to regret as she hated the boring monotony of the stiff financial institution and two years later she rebelled yet again and shocked her mother, when she left her secure job to run a Pizzeria. She loved the Pizza Shop, managing the business and dealing with customers was one of her favourite aspects of running the restaurant. Unknown to Kwaang this early insight into customer relations was beginning to form what was to become the bedrock of her future career. Unfortunately when the escalating situation of political unrest between the Red and Yellow shirts caused many of her expat patrons to leave the area her business proved to be unsustainable, and sadly the Pizzeria had to close its doors. Kwaang decided she needed a vacation, and it was five years ago that she arrived in Pattaya to have a well earned rest. Like so many new visitors to the seaside resort, she found that she loved the variety the city had to offer. One thing led to another and the holiday soon turned into a job as she saw an advertisement for a sales rep for Pattaya People Media Co. Her personality and capabilities soon got her recognition within the organisation when she was made station manager of Nova FM radio. Then within a few months the infamous Pattaya People Party Patrol was created for television and became an instant hit. Her partner in crime was Megan and the chemistry was perfect, the show became the number one events show in Pattaya.

SPORT & LEISURE Finally the continuous partying, constant venue openings and event reporting took its toll and Kwaang decided it was time for a new challenge as her career took yet another turn when a wine company invited her to promote their wines in Pattaya and it was then that she met Anders Eliasson the man behind News Steaks & Grill. Her early forage into catering stood her in good stead, and she became assistant manager of the successful restaurant enjoying the daily challenge of running a busy restaurant and solving a new problem every day. Her duties also included PR and Marketing which she was so good at that she and Anders started a business as restaurant consultants helping similar eateries in the Pattaya region. They then left their location in Thappraya road to start News Steak and Grill, New Nordic the group had taken such an interest in Kwaang that she was invited to become PR manager for the New Nordic Group. Since then the marketing and events of New Nordic have gone from strength to strength with the Music Festival and the Phoenix Golf days becoming instant successes. As with many of our Pattaya Personalities, Kwaang appreciates just how much the city has done for her. Her employers also want to put something back into the community so when an opportunity came to do just that Kwaang jumped on it. So The Orange Elephants scheme was born, formed to support the New Nordic Orange Smile Scholarship initiative. The initiative was setup to provide scholarships for selected students in Pattaya to further their education. New Nordic residents, guests of the the restaurants and anybody visiting the sales office in Pratumnak have been asked to part with 500 baht for an orange New Nordic Elephant the proceeds being used to help the future of a deserving student learn English.. I was curious how somebody like Kwaang likes to relax in her spare time. Her first love is reading, in particular Mitch Albom and her second passion is fashion. Kwaang described her addiction as one of eclectic tastes, she enjoys shopping in markets and secondhand shops just as much as malls. Her love of the quirky and bohemian is reflected in her dress sense and accessories, in particular handbags. Her description of some of her favourite bags include:’ Burgers, Popcorn a Pineapple and other just as crazy designs. Leaving New Nordic I certainly felt happier than I had been before the interview. Kwaang has an infectious personality, she naturally imparts confidence and a state of joyfulness. I wonder what the next development will be for this highly intelligent and ebullient women ? To find out - continue to watch this space !.

6 Hour ENDURANCE RACE The word Endurance as an Adjective is defined as: denoting or relating to a race or other sporting event that takes place over a long distance or otherwise demands great physical stamina. However, I feel the best way to describe how this season has gone is to use the Noun definition of the word: the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way The 3rd and final race of the 2016 season was held at the postponed Bang Saen Festival of Speed. The championship standings showed the #36 Toyota with such a commanding lead from the first two races that only a small miracle would see TR-Motorsport crowned as champions. However unlikely it may be the scenario was Thomas and the DC5 to finish in first while the Toyota failed to cross the line at all, being the slowest car on the grid - this was tall order! As with all the endurance races this season the team was beset by mechanical issues.During the extended practice period, gearbox and clutch problems arose resulting in a complete change out of the gearbox. Luckily this rectified the problems and the team were ready for qualifying. Tony Percy, longtime friend of the team and co-driver took the reins of the Honda Integra DC5, with the previous issues still fresh in his mind Tony gently eased the car through qualifying and into a respectable 9th place, which is was an outstanding achievement considering that there were 61 other cars on the track at the same time all vying for a clean lap. As with all endurance races the 6 hours is split between drivers, for the first stint, Tony pushed the Integra into 7th before the first changeover. The safety car period eventually became a red flagged race and all cars returned to the pits resulting in the team losing any advantage they had gained. Seven cars had been involved in the on-track pileup and although this meant fewer cars in the race and more space on track it took several hours to remove the cars and fix the damaged barriers. At the restart, Thomas powered his way into 2nd place overall and was somehow setting faster times than the leading Toyota. He consolidated his position up until the next driver change however the gremlins were back playing with the clutch again causing the car to struggle to change gear. Eventually, all the gears except 4th had failed with Tony limping around the circuit. The decision was then made to pit early and see if the issue could be solved. No fix could be applied so it was 4th gear all the way to the chequered flag for the final 1 hour 24 minutes. Ironically the leading Toyota crashed several times and finished dead last but this was still enough to win the championship. TR-Motorsport finished 4th in class, later promoted to 3rd as another team had received a 30 lap penalty for a jump start behind the safety car. TR-Motorsports final position in the Enduring Endurance Championship was 3rd in class, with just a little bit more luck who knows what might have been……
Super Production Class Race One An eventful weekend of racing greeted TR-Motorsport at the final rounds of the Thailand Super Series held at the picturesque Bang Saen Beach Street Circuit. The final event had been postponed from November ’16 to February ’17 due to the passing of the late King. With the postponement came a long gap giving us the perfect opportunity to concentrate on some R & D in the hope of closing the gap to Championship Victor Hideharu Kuroki. After some minor tweaks to the car, a major redesign of the front Air Intake was undertaken which provided very encouraging results after completing several simulations on the Dyno equipment.

Due to our first gear ratio being longer and the race to the first corner uphill we knew wewould be at a disadvantage. Thomas got off the line perfectly and stormed up the hill defending his line to the left to try and outwit Hideharu who was virtually alongside the ‘Blue Blur’, paint was traded several times before Hideharu backed out and slotted in behind to mount another challenge. The final corner of lap 1 caused a gasp from the TR-Motorsport team and fans as Hideharu once again tried a move, this time on the inside but again showed professionalism by backing off at the right time.
After the race, the car was checked over by the official Thailand Super Series scrutineers and as with all races we have competed in this year, they found nothing to report. Although dejected the team were still in good spirits after another great week of motorsport at Bang Saen Beach and look forward to returning in July to compete in the GTC Supercar Class with the new Porsche 911 (997).
MOTOR & MARINE
Simulations are all well and good, however, it’s on the track where it counts and Thomas fully obliged with the fastest lap around the circuit in official practice. When qualifying began both Thomas and Hideharu were setting fastest lap after fastest lap, nip and tuck all the way. Eventually, Thomas managed to claim a fantastic Pole Position by just one-tenth of a second from Hideharu, being Pole on a tight and twisty circuit is always vital so the race to the first corner could possibly decide the race.
In next month’s Pattaya Trader we will have a big update for your regarding the upcoming season, in the meantime you can follow us through our website Tr-Motorosport.com, our Facebook page Facebook.com/TRMotorsportThailand and our Instagram account tmotorsport_thailand
By the middle of lap 2 Thomas had pulled out a small lead and held on for the remainder of the race even breaking the lap record on several occasions, Hideharu pushed Thomas all the way to the chequered flag and saw his 100% record gone as Thomas, 10 years after his first win at Bang Saen came home with the spoils and a much needed 20 points, cementing his second place position in the championship.
Race 2 After the elation of the previous victory had faded, the team of mechanics led by Sven Thummel got to work on the car to check everything over and prepare for Race 2. The team soon spotted an issue with the wishbones as the bushings were damaged and as a precautionary measure these were duly replaced. As with all previous rounds, the top 5 finishers from Race 1 started in reverse order meaning Thomas would start from 5th. As the cars assembled on the grid all looked good and a top 3 position looked more than possible. As the car left for the warm lap Thomas felt an issue with the steering although not terminal, Thomas made the wisest choice to visit the pits to try and ascertain what the issue was. The team of mechanics could not find anything obvious so the car headed back out on track. People reading this familiar with the rules and regulations of motorsport, will of course know that our little visit to the pits would mean starting at the back of the grid, this was only compounded by the fact that due to a miscommunication with the stewards we forced to wait at the pit lane exit some 600 meters away from the back of the grid! Regular readers will know that we have had similar issues before and still come out on top. However, today was not going to be one of those days! The first 3 laps of the race went perfectly with Thomas making his way through the field from a lowly 19th to a respectable 10th. The racing gods were smiling on us as a safety car deployment bunched the whole pack back up and with 9 laps to go top 3 was still an outside possibility. In came the safety car down went the throttle and that's where the problems began, a massive loss of power resulted in cars streaming past a limping Thomas. On the pit to car radio turning the electrics on and off to reset the car,was suggested - it worked! But by now Thomas was once again at the back of the grid. For the remaining laps, a valiant Thomas fought back to a very respectful 8th place and again set the fastest lap and broke the track record for the Super Production Class.

If you have
a Thai wife-Face Reality. Many “farangs” living happily in Thailand, with a young Thai wife and small children, live with their head firmly in the sand. Some are afraid to look at their future and what will happen to their children when they pass away. Others are preoccupied with themselves and while they pay lip service to the love of their wife and children, in reality they don’t mean it or circumstances combine to prevent them from carrying out their moral duty. The reality which I think many expats do not want to face is that because of the age difference most of them will be long dead before their children are adults and able to fend for themselves. Let’s look at two typical examples of married couples living in Pattaya. First, Loren is at least 25 years older than his wife Khun Ning and they have two small children Loren is one of the expats who has never faced up to the fact that he will be dead long before Ning. When Loren dies Ning will have by Thai standards a small but livable income. There will be no money to educate the children properly and the outcome is gloomy for his family.Chances are Nit will have to give up the rented house they live in in Pattaya and return to her home where the children can get a village education with probably little chance of higher education and more than likely a career as a m/cycle taxi driver as opposed to a doctor.
way is through life insurance. He can take a life policy written in trust; appoint trustees to make sure that after he’s gone the money is used to educate his children and not to buy a new pickup for the family. Many expat husbands don’t want to take out life insurance as they see their spouse running around Pattaya in a Ferrari and the children neglected at home. In reality it’s probably another excuse to procrastinate. Second example is Oscar. He resembles Loren in many ways, has a 29 year old wife and two infant boys The difference is that Oscar, who is 70 years old, has quite a bit of money stashed away.He likes his wife Malee’s family but does not visit there too much because of the pressure they put on her to give them money. He does help them financially but his main con-
Loren may be able to provide for education while he is living but if he wants to do this after he’s gone the only

cern is that on his death Malee will not be able to withstand the pressure on her for cash from the family. I feel sure that for many expats this example is all too real. In his own mind he sees his lifetime savings squandered by Malee’s family. However a good financial adviser could solve Oscar’s problems. If Oscar arranges it properly, not only will the taxman not be following him into the grave but he can also organise for a monthly income to be paid to Malee who will have no access to the capital, thus keeping the in-laws off her back. With the balance of his estate he can set up an education trust. He can appoint trustees to ensure that the annual school or university fees are paid directly to the institution and long after his death his sons can graduate as lawyers or doctors. Malee is not financially sophisticated and none of this is set-up to deceive her. Oscar can sit down with his financial adviser and explain to her how it has all been arranged and what she should do on his demise. She will then be able to explain to her family that a new pick up and the five rai of land going at a bargain price is beyond her financial ability. Is this not a recipe for peace of mind for Oscar and for Malee also? So it really is time to face up to your responsibility to your children and your Thai wife.Learn to live comfortably.
