Hi Readers What a very exciting time it’s been for sports fans of late, what with the Olympics, start of the English Premier league and the Singapore Grand Prix. There’s also plenty of local motor racing that you can read about in our Motor and Marine section as well as a look at what’s in store this November at Ocean Marina’s Pattaya Boat Show For those of you who prefer more sedate leisure activities you might consider a yoga lesson or spot of fishing with Roger ? Or if venturing further afield why not consider Indonesia as a destination and read John Borthwick’s article on page 26. There’s no more time to nominate worthy businesses for our Pattaya Trader’s Business Awards but if you go to bizawards.pattayatrader.com you can check on the 5 finalists in each category and vote for the one you wish to win and nominees why not get in touch with your clients and customers and get them to vote for you - every click counts ! | COVER STORY
By Kevin Cain
I
t is a well known fact that Pattaya is THE party capital of Thailand bar none, but it is sometimes mistakenly thought of as exclusively a sex paradise for the debauched. For those that know, it is a buzzing melting pot of; live music venues, top international clubs and DJ's, quirky revue bars, extraordinary music festivals, fantastic restaurants, world famous ladyboy cabaret shows, traditional Thai performances and just about any nighttime activity known to man. It is rather difficult to know where to start when speaking about the diversity that makes up Pattaya's nightlife and entertainment scene. But there is one thing for certain and sets Pattaya aside from Bangkok, everything is so close together. Firstly understand the demographics, Pattaya unlike many destinations around the world caters for all age groups and every manner of creed, religion, taste, nationality, sex, orientation or planet. This means that there really is something for just about everybody. Trying to log all this lavish cornucopia in one short article is simply impossible and it would be folly to attempt to do so. So here we focus mainly on Pattaya's thriving music scene. The creme de la crème is undoubtedly Pattaya's world famous international music festivals. The annual Pattaya Music Festival takes place in mid-March and brings together bands from all over southeast Asia and abroad. The venue is along Beach Road, with three different open air stages offering three distinct types of music. Slightly newer is the MAYA Festival in north Pattaya, a two day extravaganza of electronic dance music by top artists and renown DJ's. Pattaya has a large EDM attraction and international standard nightclubs such as MIXX and Insomnia of Walking Street draw huge crowds nightly. There are smaller festivals dotted around during the year catering for all different tastes: the Sunset Beach Music Festival, Warp Music Festival, 20 Something On The Beach, Silverlake Overlove Festival, Samed in Love Festival and the Wonderfruit Festival. Moving away from the larger festivals and music events there are nightly live performances to hear and see all over the city. Whether you preference is EDM, Rock, Blues, Thai, Country & Western, Classical or Outer Mongolian Throat singing, be assured Pattaya has it covered.Walking Street has a differing reputation around the world according to your inclination, but one thing is beyond dispute, and that is it is home to some cracking live music venues.

The Stones House is a famous institution for Rock fans, and every month they hold the Thai Super Star competition. Further along Walking Street is

Rolling Live, it is a huge cavern of a place with a very distinctive neon guitar hanging outside. It is one of the more established venues on the circuit having been open for more than ten years. There are two Filipino bands playing pop and rock classics. Moving away from Rock music the Candy Shop has two resident bands playing an assortment of modern day covers and encourages punters to dance along with the music, I strongly recommend the Singapore Slings.Moving further along Beach Road is the Hard Rock Cafe and Hotel, there is a purpose built concert hall for visiting live artists but also nightly resident DJ's and house band perform.
If your thing is Blues then a trip down to Pratumnak is well worth the effort to visit Mood Blues Cafe, the intimate venue is perfect for a relaxing whisky and listening to the jazzy / bluesy tunes getting laid down. Pattaya does not just cater for the modern music fan, recently there has been a trend to bring more classical music to the city. Only a couple of months ago a full concert orchestra performed Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture at the Tiffany’s auditorium to a packed house. The ultra modern and atmospheric Chocolate Factory, also in trendy Pratumnak Hill, has regular classical recitals with solo vocalists performing. Also the lesser known Eelswamp in north Pattaya which has been promoting classical music for some time is an eclectic venue offering some spectacular music. One rapidly popular growing area for live music in Pattaya is that of dining venues. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a case of Chicken in the Basket with an Elvis impersonator or some other crummy act. These are serious food venues with themed nights and extra special entertainment. Indian by Nature in Jomtien often celebrate traditional festivals with top Asian musicians flown in especially for sitar and other traditional instrument recitals. Ruenthai on Pattaya Second Road is for visitors who want a taste of real Thailand. It does not matter if you are a tourist or native, the Thai food is as authentic as you could wish for and the nightly open air entertainment of Thai traditional music and dancing is free and atmospheric. The amount of bars and nightclubs with nightly live music is simply staggering and nearly incomprehensible. Every night without fail there will be scores of live bands and artists performing every kind of music ever invented all over town. The best thing about it is that most is completely free and all you have to do is to look at events listings such as the Pattaya Trader Events Calendar and the times, venues and artists will all be detailed. Pattaya really embraces music of all genres and consistently promotes and hosts music events and festivals. The forward thinking Pattaya City Council are fully aware of the benefits that come with being associated with a wide music scene and the revenue it brings to the city. That is why so many of the larger events are totally free, it encourages visitors from around Thailand and further afield, to come to our seaside home and spend a great deal of money towards the local economy. In my mind as an avid music fan, long may it continue.

ne thing’s for sure in the months I have been visiting Yoga Pattaya it has really developed into a proper centre complete with a great relax room and comfy bean bags, a great place to chat with friends, before or after a class. Upstairs there are large comfortable studios airy and spacious with great ambiance and it was to one such studio that I went on Wednesday at 9 a.m. for Sasicha’s beginners class. I’d remembered to bring my water, towel and yoga mat (but don’t worry they have plenty of mats available if you forget) and I was pleased with a gentle start of shoulder, neck and of course breathing exercises. We then built up to balancing and the classic yoga poses. For those of us not quite so steady there were nearby walls on which to lean and I noticed with interest that we were all given belts and boxes, doubtless for use later in the class.

HEALTH & WELLNESS So, on we went with our “Downward dog” and plenty of other bending exercises to get the blood flowing to our heads. It’s amazing how much of our day is spent with the heart having to constantly pump blood upward to the brain so there are many health benefits to reversing this even for just a while such as reducing stress and improving blood flow to the face and scalp. Soon we were told to use our boxes – or at least one putting it between the knees to firstly help give support and then assure our feet were the prescribed distance apart. Then for those like me who have quite short arms both boxes were used to provide a raised area on which to lean. Throughout the class Sasicha gave gentle instruction sometimes with just a touch to imply greater effort required or suggest that limbs could be straighter. Then a gentle press down or twist to get us Into the correct position which made me think how amazing it is that you can think you’re doing fine and how easy it all is, until your teacher puts your body into the correct position and then you feel the burn. But all in all the class was not a painful experience especially when at the end of it we lay on the floor with our eyes closed practicing our breathing as one by one we were treated to a soothing neck, arms, and shoulder massage with invigorating Tiger balm.
Another thing’s for sure – all yoga classes would be so much better if they ended this way ! www.pattayatrader.com

With a choice of 13,466 islands, where does a visitor begin in Indonesia? Sticking a pin in the map is one option. “Indo” has more fascinating places to visit than a dozen lifetimes might allow, yet most of us fixate on only one, Bali. Once lauded as the Morning of the Earth, southern Bali is now more like the Morning (to Midnight) of the Traffic Jam. Instead, use Bali as your springboard to explore this vast archipelago. Here’s a starter menu.
Kalimantan. Borneo, the world’s third largest island has chunks ruled by Malaysia and Brunei but Indonesia’s sector, Kalimantan is by far the biggest. In its southern jungles near the town of Pangkalan Bun are two heroic wildlife havens, Tanjung Puting National Park and Camp Leakey Orangutan Orphanage, which survive amid ever increasing land clearances for the palm oil industry. Cruise up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey to see the work done by the Orangutan Foundation in rescuing infant orangutans whose mothers have been killed or captured during jungle clearing. One visitor here summarised her delight: “I mightn’t have seen Paris, but I have cuddled an orangutan!” Komodo Island. Forget Daenerys Targaryen’s trio of aerial Zippo lighters in Game
of Thrones. Komodo Island’s “dragons” are earthbound, actual and their bite burns worse than wildfire. Varanus komodoensis, the world’s largest lizard, inhabits two islands off the western tip of Flores Island. One bite from this three metre, 90 kilo creature and … well, the end is messy. As my guide says, “The dragons hunt alone but dine together.” After you’ve marveled at these ominous skinks-on-steroids and the beaches of their World Heritage national park island you can return to Flores as your base for plenty of excellent diving and snorkeling.
Java. With a population of 140 million, Java is too crowded for its own good. But it’s worth ploughing through the island’s formidable traffic to reach the grand temples of Borobudur and Prambanan near Yogyakarta. To see their wonders is to imagine two competing kingdoms, with different religions, vying to build the world’s best stairway to heaven. The great stone dome of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, looms above the central Java plain and is populated by some 500 Buddha statues. The equally massive Hindu complex of Prambanan was built around the same time eighth—ninth century AD) and both are now World Heritage sites.

Lombok. Some travellers might tell you that their favourite place in Bali is
next door — Lombok. Think of this large island as "Bali unplugged.” Beside the beauty of its mountains and uncluttered coast, Lombok lacks the frantic aspects of contemporary tourist culture. Senggigi Beach sits on its west coast looking across to Bali’s sacred volcano, Gunung Agung. If you can’t get romantic at sunset here, then best get thee to an ice cave. Take a trip to the craft villages of Penujak to buy earthenware pottery and nearby Sukarara for traditional ikat and songkat weavings. Then chill out for a few days in the little Gili Islands just off Lombok’s northwest tip. Diving, reading and sleeping, dining, dreaming and cocktails are the agenda here.
West Papua. “Yes, our people ate Mr Rockefeller,” some villagers in southwestern Papua cheekily like to tell shocked visitors. They’re referring to American millionaire Michael C. Rockefeller who disappeared without trace off their Asmat coast in 1961. Indonesian Papua, at the western end of New Guinea Island, is still frontier country for tourism and development. Its wild, indented coastline is home to upriver villages of traditional Melanesian (as opposed to Asiatic) culture. Reach here — which is not that easy — and you’ll be richly rewarded, and not eaten. Sulawesi. Formerly known as the Celebes, Sulawesi Island’s four penin-
sulas sprawl across the map like a starfish in pyjamas. In its mountainous north the Tanah Toraja area, known the "Land of the Heavenly Kings", is home to a sophisticated culture best known for its spectacular “boat roof” houses. See also the stone monoliths, cliff-face effigies, “hanging coffins” and lengthy funeral ceremonies that make this culture unique in Indonesia. While Torajans are nominally Christian (rather than Muslim), their roots run deep with ancestor worship and animism.
Sumba. Sumba (not to be confused with neighbouring Sumbawa Island) is sometimes known as the “cowboy island of the South Seas” because of its mounted warriors and their celebrated annual Pasola festival — a mock but hazardous battle involving hundreds of horsemen. Add to this the island’s massive stone tombs and Sumba is, according to anthropologist Lawrence Blair, “a time capsule of our earliest beginnings.” Arid, undeveloped Sumba makes Bali seem like Manhattan, but opulent Nihiwatu Resort on its southwest coast offers five-star creature comforts and perfect, uncrowded reef surf. INFO: An Indonesian Visa On Arrival is free for many countries but check before arrival — the rules change often.

Pattata International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal
“ a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces ”. Recently there were plenty of friendly faces at the PILC Coffee Morning at Loaf Café. At the Loaf Café in Welcome tables were adorned with bundles of marshmallows wrapped in red crepe with yellow P.I.L.C. ribbon securing the bundles. Forty five people were welcomed and there was a variety of scrumptious savouries and cakes for them to enjoy. The serving trays were replenished at constant intervals, with coffee and tea available on demand. Six thousand four hundred baht was raised with people buying raffle tickets and there were nine prizes on offer. President Helle introduced Thai student Min to the members. Min is starting University in August and although she already has a scholarship, P.I.L.C. is assisting by paying for her personal daily needs. It isn’t a lot of money, but she would not be able to eat without the extra help.
PILC’s monthly luncheon at the Sailors Bar in Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Then a couple of weeks later PILC’s monthly luncheon was held at the Sailors Bar in Ocean Marina Yacht Club. 37 ladies were in attendance welcomed by hospitality chairperson, Violette Gauthier. Every lady attending received a wonderful surprise at the reception table - a big, dark blue ceramic plate! Each plate had the member’s name on it as well as a handpainted stick figure. The restaurant has a beautiful view of the sea and is a really nice place to dine. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout and everyone enjoyed a lovely 3-course meal from a set menu whilst having fun chatting with each other! Six lucky ladies won raffle prizes and a total of 6,900 THB was raised.

Y
ou might remember my last article in the trader: “Eating Monsters” which featured me consuming various snake concoctions plus copious amounts of creepy crawlies. Well as promised I ventured to the Philippines to face my fears, in the form of the dreaded Balut, a medium boiled duck embryo. Now truth be told for some strange reason I cannot stomach the thought of eating an egg white, unless it’s mixed with the yolk as scrambled egg, crazy I know considering some of the things I have eaten in my time, but the thought of egg white just makes me cringe. Therefore for me to eat a duck embryo, I needed some Dutch courage first. So after numerous San Miguels and a few shots of Jägermeister I was ready to bite the bullet or in this case the little ducky. I just couldn’t face biting in half the undeveloped chick, so I drained the juice off, which smelt terrible and just poked the whole egg/embryo into my mouth and chewed as quickly as I could. Sadly the feel of the feathered wings and the crunch of the soft bones and head, not to mention the beak was just too much for me. So before I simply couldn’t take it no more and projectile vomited the chewed up little fellow across the bar, I took a big gulp of San Mig to wash it down in one almighty effort. Pleasurable certainly not, but the locals swear it’s good for the libido but don’t they always say that about anything gruesome to eat? Anyhow I faced my fears and completed the task but certainly wouldn’t recommend Balut even if you do need to kick start your libido. I would rather take a Cialis or Viagra gel if I got into trouble. I soon went looking for other strange local delicacies unique to the Philippines and stumbled upon an old classic Sizzling Sisig which is best eaten with a few beers.Basically sisig is all the fatty parts of a pig’s face, nose, ears, cheeks etc and it’s important to shave the pig parts first, or more often than not singe the ear and nasal hair off with a blowtorch or over a naked flame, native style.Otherwise you can end up with a mouthful of stiff bristles that is quite off putting and hard to digest to say the least. Funnily enough, high cholesterol aside, it’s quite delicious and served with a raw egg in the middle, which you mix up (so I can eat it) and add freshly squeezed calamansi ( small sour lime) juice too. It’s quite moreish and you can easily find yourself spooning up more and more, after each and every slug of beer. I highly recommend trying it whilst drinking with a group of friends. I’m not sure if it would be as enjoyable sober or as a main dish to eat alone.
I mean come on, just how much face can you eat?

t seems like we have only just had our half time oranges, and yet here we are with a brand new season of thrills and spills which is the English Premier League. After last season's whirlwind of surprises, upsets and unbelievable events, I cannot quite believe the ball is once again planted on the centre spot ready to be kicked off. Obviously Leicester City were the headline act of 2015 / 2016. And I think most of the football fans in the world, no matter what team they support, were delighted for the Foxes. So what does the new English Premier League have in store for us commencing on Saturday the 13th of August?
Firstly to replace the relegated clubs from last season, namely Newcastle, Aston Villa and Norwich, there are three newcomers to the premiership. It is worth noting at this juncture this will be the first season of the Premier League era that former European Cup winners Aston Villa do not compete in the top flight of English football. Burnley, Middlesbrough and Hull City are the Premiership new boys and all three will prove to be tricky away games for most clubs. Although two giants of the Premier League went down, the three promoted teams have strong records of playing in the Premiership. Having said that, the bookmakers odds favour all three promoted teams to be relegated with Hull City to be propping up the table. During the close season, and accurate as we go to press, there have already been 8 managerial changes. Five clubs decided to part with their managers; Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton and Watford. Whilst Southampton, Sunderland and Hull City lost their managers to other clubs, and in Sunderland's case big Sam Allardyce departed to become England's national coach. This normal merry-go-round of managerial departures and signings adds even more uncertainty to the melting pot of the new season. How is it possible to predict the League Champions when so many teams have new men at the helm and so many different playing personnel ? Once again, looking at the bookmakers to throw some light on the confusion, it seems that Manchester City are their favourites at 5/2. Perhaps the arrival of the highly successful Pep Guardiola as manager is affecting the odds, but it will definitely depend on whether he can shore up the leaky defense of last season. Jose Mourinho who swapped Chelsea for Manchester United, must have impressed the men that know as the Red Devils are second favourites with the best price at 18/5. It does seem trifle peculiar that Chelsea who sacked Mourinho, languish behind Manchester United at third in the pecking order.

I am not quite certain what criteria the likes of Paddy Power and the rest of the bookies formulate their odds on but bear in mind their thinking was completely flawed last season. They were utterly and completely embarrassed with the surprise package that upset the applecart, namely Leicester City. At the start of last season Leicester were odds on favourites to go down and a massive 5000/1 to actually win the league. How could they get it so wrong?
Issue 190 | AUGUST 2016
SPORT & LEISURE
You can be assured that this season the bookies have well and truly covered their proverbials, the biggest odds you can can get anywhere for any team to actually win the league is 1,500/1. A massive reduction of 3,500 points, that is why you never see a poor bookie!
I would just love it if Leicester City would once again make utter fools of them all and belittle their forecasted position of seventh place. It does seem a tough call as the hawks have been circling around the King Power Stadium and Leicester are struggling to keep hold of key players and backroom staff. Also a major determining factor on all the preseason forecasting is that of new player signings. The influx of star strikers and top goal scoring midfielders can rejuvenate any team. Players who shone in the 2016 European Championships, with the exception of anybody who played for England, are being hunted down and signed as fast as the ink can dry on the pages of their contracts.
The new lucrative TV deal, the highest in world football, will give all 20 clubs the financial clout to compete in the transfer market. The deal is worth over ÂŁ10 billion over the next three years, so even the minnows of the league can now strengthen their squads in depth with top quality players. What this means is that things are on a more level playing field, the domination of the ultra rich clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United is now seriously under threat. It also means that there simply are no easy games left in the Premiership. Just about any team in the league can beat any other, the winners will be those that can be consistent over the whole season. That is why anybody who is a member of a weekly forecasting syndicate will have a tough time of it predicting results this term, and with a bit of luck so will the bookmakers. Now is the time to put my neck on the line and to let you the readers, know who I think will be the winners and losers come 21st May 2017. And in time honoured fashion of celebrity competitions I will start with relegation fodder. In no particular order I believe that Watford, Hull City and Middlesborough are doomed.Surprise packages that should improve greatly on the 2015 / 2016 season and will qualify for Europe are; Everton, Liverpool and Spurs. And finally the top three in ascending order will be; Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United. I seriously believe that the Chosen One will lead Manchester United to the title if for no other reason but to spite Roman Abramovich and Chelsea.I hope we are in for as an exciting time as last season, but somehow I sadly think that somebody such as Leicester City will not surprise us this time. By the look of the Summer signings one thing is certain, the English Premier League will remain the most exhilarating football league in the world.

RIO 2016 the Games of the XXXI Olympiad
T
he Olympic circus rolled into Rio on August 5th 2016, representing elite athletes from every country in the world battling and trying to outwit each other as well as the clock. The facts and figures of this year’s games are: 205 countries attending, 37 venues and 306 sporting events in 42 sporting disciplines. The games were formally opened with typical Brazilian flavoured, colour, passion, music and dance at Rio's Maracana stadium, it simply could have not been anywhere else in the world.
The broadcast of the opening ceremony was estimated to have been seen by three billion people, that is almost half of the world's population, which just shows the attraction of this colossal event. After the drums, choreography and pyrotechnics had faded, in sauntered Gisele Bundchen to dazzle and stupefy viewers. The amazing supermodel came out of retirement one last time to bring bling to the whole affair, with one final catwalk. Looking resplendent in a thigh-split, silver sequined dress, that adorned her like syrup on a stack of very curvy pancakes. The bossa nova music “Girl from Ipanema” was perfect as the Brazilian strutted across the packed and captivated stadium. This was not just sport it was pageantry meets razzle-dazzle, and the crowd loved every high-heeled step of it. The opening ceremony was a distraction from the undercurrent of feeling that has preceded this highly controversial event. The build-up to Rio 2016 has been played against a deep recession and political protests in Brazil. The first South American games ever in history, has also been disrupted by concerns over the Russian doping scandal, the Zika virus and problems with Rio's security, infrastructure and venues. With the economy struggling so badly the budget for the opening ceremony was slashed but it still managed to deliver on all counts, sometimes simplicity is best, and in this case that was certainly the case. The Russian contingent was cut down to 271 athletes from an initial 389 following accusations of state- sponsored doping in the country, were at least spared any obvious negative reaction from the crowd.
It still remains a puzzle to how Putin's “Hole in the Wall Gang” were actually allowed to compete at all. Perhaps the largest welcome, almost ovation, of the evening was given to yet another Olympic first. Ten athletes from four countries will compete together as the Refugee Olympic Team. The team comprises of two swimmers, two judokas, a marathoner and five medium distance runners. The International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said the team were sending “A message of hope to millions of refugees around the globe.”

However, whilst the opening celebration was taking place there were other less celebratory events occurring all over Rio. All along the boulevard alongside Copacabana beach thousands of protesters were calling for the removal of president Michel Temer, smaller demonstrations took place from Saens Pena square to the stadium.A Greek athlete, and not a Russian, was expelled after failing a drug test, and over at Copacabana around the Beach Volley Arena, a robot difused a suspected bomb.
Certainly things were not all sugary around the Mountain, even the interim president was booed as he declared the games open. However, Thailand had a marvelous first day of competing, when Sopita Tanasan blew away the opposition to grab the first gold medal of the weightlifting competition. Favourite Hou Zhihui of China had to withdraw, but Thailand's pint sized battleship took full advantage. The 21-year-old simply dominated the women's 48kg, lifting 92kg in the snatch and 108kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 200kg, to finish first in weight lifting's lightest category. "Thai women won a further gold and a silver in the same event as Sukanya Srisurat pipped compatriot Pimsiri Sirikaew to gold in the women's 58kg weightlifting competition. Sukanya, 21, lifted an Olympic record 110kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 240kg, beating the silver medallist by 8kg". With all the hullabaloo surrounding Rio's Games, it is easy to get distracted from the fact that 10,500 athletes have been training all their lives for the opportunity to compete in Brazil. Even though amongst those thousands a minority will try to Vladdywell cheat let's not fool ourselves, these are without doubt the top athletes in the world. As well as the battle for Olympic medals taking place in 32 venues in Rio de Janeiro five football co-host cities ; Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Salvador and Sao Paulo were also selected.Rio 2016 also brings a host of firsts and a catalogue of interesting facts: • 2,488 medals awarded • 2 new sports – Rugby 7's & The return of Golf • 450,000 condoms handed out to athletes, 42 per person • 380,000 foreign tourists in Rio • The Olympic Village dining hall is as long as four Olympic swimming pools • The youngest competitor Nepal's Gaurika Singh who is 13 and competing in 100m backstroke • The oldest competitor New Zealand's Julie Brougham who is 62 and competing is dressage • The smallest team Tuvalu, their sole competitor Etimoni Timuani in the men's 100m athletics • Bhutan is the only nation whose team was comprised only of women The very ethos of the Olympics is triumph through adversity, athletes have to overcome so many obstacles just to compete. And so it is with Rio 2016, it is equitable that such a prestigious event has finally come to South America, and fitting that it is glamorous Rio de Janerio that hosts the event. I for one am glad that Bossa Nova Brazil is showing the world how to compete and just as importantly how to have fun. Today's world has enough troubles and challenges, so a little light relief and serious competition will prove just the tonic.

5.25 kg Spanish Mackerel
worked it closer I saw it was a spanish mackerel! The reason why this fish did not seem to put up a decent fight is the depth of water. With 160 feet of line plus out the fish can swim in within a huge circle beneath the boat without taking any line and it’s the same when the fish moves to the back of the boat that circle goes with it. Think of a spotlight, the further away it is, the bigger the circle. If I had hooked this fish in 90 foot of water what a better fight he would have given. If it had been in 20 foot of water I might not have landed him at all! I went back some days later looking for a shallower part of the hole. I found an area where it rose up to 90 feet, which makes it the edge of the hole. However I found myself in the main channel for the PLG gas tankers going north, no anchoring around those guys!
H
i Folks, every now and then I like to anchor up and go fishing for big fish. As long as there is a decent bottom bite to keep me interested, I’ll sit for hours. So I went out on a rising tide to the south west of Koh Larn, dropped the anchor in 70 ft of water. Here the bottom slopes down to 100 ft plus. However it does it gradually, no big drop off. I put out two float rigs and two bottom rigs, all with small live fish as bait. Then I rigged up my light bottom rig and started fishing. I was only guessing that this was a good place and after ten minutes and no bite at all, decided it wasn’t. So it was up anchor, move into 90 ft and repeat the process, only to find the same results. Off I went again, this time to the north end of the hole on the west side of Koh Larn. It’s deep here 160 ft and it took all of my anchor rope to hold bottom. Out went all the rods and I started bottom fishing. I picked up a few black and silver fish (bpla Ka-pow) which are normally good scrapers but the depth of water and the current I had to use a 60gm weight on my 6lb braid. If I had been using monofilament line I would have never touched bottom, as it’s thickness produces a lot of drag. ZZZZZZZZZZT! That magical sound of line been taken off a reel with the clicker on, and it goes on for eight seconds so it’s got to be fish! I grabbed the bottom rod and it bent over, all that waiting has paid off. I started to reel in and feeling the weight of the fish I thought it was a decent one or two kilos, nothing big but a nice fish nevertheless. He ran a bit and I was able to raise him off the bottom and after that it was a steady fight towards the surface. After only ten minutes I saw the weight, and it was tangled around two other lines, what the heck first decent fish in months, I’ll sort it out later. Then to my surprise a four foot fish appeared cruising around, as I

It is a true summer bite, horse mackerel (bpla Thoo) are hard to find. So in between trolling for small queen fish (bpla Salat) and snipe (bpla grutung) Frank and I did some bottom fishing at Hin Pra Nang 2 kilometres south of Koh Krok. On the dropping tide when it is in full flood the fish are in feeding mode just in front of the main head. Leaving the motor running we started fishing in about 37 foot of water up to 20 foot of water, and then it was a quick move back. When the tide is moving fast the swirls give away the edge of the main head, but I also use the depth sounder. I have stopped using the large black and yellow marker buoy as a point of reference as I think it changes position now and again. Using this technique we picked up a load of russell snappers as well as an assortment of reef fish. Great fun with a light rod, 6lb braid, two hooks onto 12 lb fluorocarbon line and a 50gm lead weight.

TCR’ has become one of the most widely spoken acronyms in Thai motorsport so far this year and that’s because this brand new racing format is already a big hit. ‘TCR Thailand’ became the first national ‘TCR’ championship in Asia when it took the green lights for the first time back in May as part of the Thailand Super Series programme. The bold idea behind TCR Thailand is very equally balanced and cost effective ‘touring car’ style cars where drivers can develop their skills. Importantly the TCR platform applies complete equality across all the affiliated championships worldwide and so when TCR Asia Series came to Thailand last month it provided the perfect opportunity for Thai drivers to mix it up with the best in Asia while driving the same machinery and using the same tyres, all on home soil. Four Thai drivers took up the challenge as TCR Asia Series hooked up with the Buriram Festival of Speed. Vattana Motorsport fielded their proven duo, Jack Lemvard and Narasak Ittritpong, in a SEAT Leon and Honda Civic respectively, while two promising amateur drivers, Nattachak Hanjitkasem and Paritat Bulbon, were also on the entry list. The quartet really rose to the occasion and all of them made it onto their respective podiums over the weekend. In the overall ‘pro’ level class Jack and Narasak flew the Vattana Motorsport flag high in their new ‘battleship grey’ livered cars with a close 2-3 finish in the first race although in the second race mechanical issues set them back, the latter retiring early on with brake problems while the former took a knock in his stride to still bring his SEAT home in an excellent fourth place. In the AM class there was well-deserved double podium joy for Nattachak. He won the class in the first race after seeing off many of the best amateur drivers plying their trade in Asia, turning in a superb drive where he showed a fast pace and steady rhythm coupled with keeping a cool head and in the end he was well rewarded with the top step of the podium. He followed that up with the runners up spot in Race 2. It was superb work from this driver who has taken a big step forward following several seasons racing in Super 2000. Also bang on the AM class pace was Paritat who looked quick in both races. Technical issues in the first race though saw him limping to the line but he wrapped up the weekend with a well judged drive to third place in Race 2 and that meant all the TCR Thailand drivers’ made a trip to the podium. The TCR concept is clearly delivering on its promises as it’s already breeding Thai drivers that can take on the cream of the established international competitors.
“GT ASIA” AUDI AND FERRARI SHARES THE SPOILS IN ‘GT ASIA’
For the second year on the trot Asia’s top international sportscar racing championship, GT Asia Series, pitched up in Thailand, as it joined the Buriram Festival of Speed programme last month. There was plenty of quality on show with GT3 cars from Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley on the entry list from top teams running top drivers. The Absolute Racing entered Bentley had won both races at the opening round in Korea so all eyes were on them when the cars arrived in Thailand, especially as Thai star Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak would be guesting in one of the trio of cars. Another Thai favourite was Piti Bhirombhakdi, he was in a Ferrari 458 GT3 that he was sharing with Carlo Van Dam and the Dutch pro planted the car on pole position. At the green lights for Race 1 Carlo led the pack away and kept the lead to hand

over to Piti at half distance and the Thai then reeled off a string of fast laps to extend their lead. However an error that had occurred during the pitstop saw them hit with a late race drive through penalty although Piti was able to keep fourth place to the finish. Instead victory went to the dazzling gold Audi R8 LMS GT3 of Marchy Lee and Shaun Thong and that represented a first ever GT Asia Series victory for Phoenix Racing. Marchy turned in a superb stint having emerged from the pitstops in fifth and the Hong Kong driver battled past the two Bentleys to take the victory. In the second race victory went to the Ferrari 488 GT3 of Davide Rizzo and Anthony Liu, the pair making up for the opening race where the Italian had suffered an early spin that knocked them out of contention for the victory. That win in fact was one of the never ending ‘firsts’ in Thai motorsport as it was the first time that Ferrari’s newgeneration ‘488’ sportscar had been seen on a Thai racetrack and the ‘GT3’ missile had delivered a well deserved win on its arrival. This is actually the same model of racecar that Thailand’s top sportscar driver, Pasin Lathouras, is in fact racing across Europe this year. There was also another ‘first’ worthy of mention as Craft Bamboo has switched brands from Aston Martin to Porsche this year and they rocked up with a pair of new 991 GT3-R racecars, the first time the GT3 version had been seen in Thailand. One example was in the hands of experienced racer Frank Yu and Pasin’s former teammate, Richard Lyons, while the other was piloted by last year’s triple Thailand Super Series GTM category winner in Bangsaen, Darryl O’Young, who had local driver Naiyanobh Bhirombhakdi alongside him. Porsche’s latest creation looks completely stunning but it hasn’t been able to show its hand yet. But don’t expect that situation to last for too long though.
“Asian Formula Renault’‘FORMULA’ CARS RETURN TO THAILAND It’s been a longtime since ‘formula cars’ have been seen in Thailand so the arrival of Formula Renault Asia was well overdue – and eagerly awaited by the fans in the grandstands and the single-seaters didn’t disappoint at all, serving up two thrilling races. For the record Leo Ye won both races but the fans’ eyes were focused on local driver Umar A. Rahman who had an early exit the first race after being caught in a spectacular Turn 1 incident that typified why single-seaters are always exciting to watch but made up for it with a smooth and steady run to the flag in the second race. Also in action was Thai domiciled James Runacres who had something of a mixed weekend but was always right on the pace.

TR-Motorsport powered by Conti-X once again overcame adversity to steal the show at Rounds 3 & 4 of the Thailand Super Series in Buriram. Anyone who has been following the team for the last two years will remember the Lazarus-esque comeback in the S1 R championship when Thomas, beset with gearbox issues failed to make qualifying and started the race in 25th position, on that occasion Thomas roared through the pack and by the end of lap 3 was in 3rd place which would be his final finishing position. The old adage ‘Lightening doesn’t strike twice’ is often proved wrong and last weekend was no exception.
Race 1
As the team headed into the weekend all was looking good, the mechanics back at the garage had got the Honda City purring like a kitten and ready for battle once more. However, motorsport never runs smoothly and issues with the throttle sensor plagued the free practice session with the car losing power in several corners resulting in a lowly 16th place on the timesheets. The team got to work straight away fixing the same issue that had ended their race early in Bang Saen last year and all was looking good for qualifying. As qualifying began the engine, which had been running perfectly all week back in the garage was now starting to lose power which got worse as the laps went by. Thomas managed to qualify in 9th place, 1.6 seconds behind pole position, this was a great effort considering the engine was well underpowered. After qualifying it was decided that the engine issue would only get worse and it was too risky to try and repair it for the races, the better option was to try and salvage what parts they could and fit an entirely new engine.

With the engine replacement came a grid penalty of 10 places meaning the team would now start 19th, way down the grid and with lots of cars to pass in front of them! Thomas in his usual Danish manner was unfazed by the challenge that lay ahead and gave a prediction that “if all went well” he could make the top 8 by the end of the 11 lap race. His prediction was a little on the generous side as Thomas stormed through the field as early as lap one, passing cars on the straight before the first corner. Cars in midfield were providing all the action on the track with spins, shunts, and breakdowns aplenty. Thomas threaded his way through the field meticulously managing to avoid all the incidents apart from one, at turn 7 he found himself sandwiched between two other drivers who were vying for position in their own class. Thomas with nowhere to go held his line as much as possible and survived the ‘close encounters’ with just a few scratches and bumps to #29 car and then continued his charge up the field. With 3 laps to go Thomas was in 4th place which would be a fine result considering what had gone before. However, the two cars in front of him were in a heated battle with places changing every at corner allowing Thomas to catch up to them quickly. Both cars then had a coming together slowing them considerably and Thomas seized his opportunity taking 3rd place with ease and it wasn’t long before until he forced the 2nd placed car into a mistake allowing him to overtake. Although Thomas was catching the leader the distance was too great with the amount of laps remaining and the second step of the podium was the reward for yet another incredible drive by the Danish Dynamo. Thomas also secured the fastest lap with a time of 2.02:39

influence on Thomas’s race. With 6 laps to go he began to close the gap on the leader. but the 3rd place car driven by Khun Yutsarun was quickly closing in and putting pressure on the Dane. Thomas opted to let the leader go and concentrate on defending his position for the last few laps. Khun Yutsurun, now in the slipstream made several attempts to pass at turn 1 and turn 12 but Thomas with over 36 years’ racing experience was able to hold him at bay and reach the chequered flag before him, much to the delight of the whole team watching from the pit wall. Two races, two-second places was a great result in Buriram especially considering how the weekend began. The team are now in second place in both the drivers’ championship and the team championship with 4 more races to go. Congratulations to all the team and sponsors who have such an important role in making TR Motorsport the success that it is. The next action on the track will be 2931 July for the RAAT 6 Hour Endurance Championship Race again in Buriram. Race 2
The Top five finishers from Race 1 are reversed on the grid for Race 2 meaning Thomas would start in 4th, however, due to a penalty to another driver Thomas was promoted to 3rd. Full of confidence from the previous day's achievements the team was hoping for another strong performance and Thomas didn't disappoint. As the five lights went out he made a slow getaway initially but recovered the lost ground on the main straight to find himself in 4th close behind the 3rd place car. The pole sitter had made a mistake and gone wide at turn 1 allowing his pursuers to take advantage along the main straight with Thomas overtaking on the inside of the hairpin to move up to 3rd. The #29 car was now working like a dream and it wasn’t long before the 2nd place car succumbed to ‘The Blue Blur’ in turn 8. Thomas now set his sights on the leader of the race and the championship Hideahru Kuroki. During the next few laps, the field began to sort itself out, with all the incidents happening mid or backfield causing no

cean Marina is now famous throughout the Gulf of Thailand and in fact all of South East Asia hosting as it does premier events such as the award winning Top of the Gulf Regatta and the 5th Pattaya Boat show that just might prove to be the biggest and best yet with an extensive display of great looking boats and lifestyle products. With 22 boats up to 119 foot in length at last year’s show, organisers are planning an even bigger display this November and have expanded the in-water display space to accommodate the increased interest.
“Since launching Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show five years ago we have seen considerable growth in marine tourism and boat use in the Gulf of Thailand. The boat show has helped to position this region as a leading marine destination in South East Asia. Both the number of boat owners overseas choosing Ocean Marina to base their boats and the number of Thai people buying boats in the region has increased, and this trend looks to continue,” said Mr. Scott Finsten, Harbour Master, Ocean Marina.
There will be some great luxury yachts to view such as the Ocean Emerald super yacht designed by Norman Foster and based at Ocean Marina for the whole of the charter season. Also for the first time Monte Carlo Luxury Yachts such as the magnificent MCY 86 With an overall length of 26.30 mts (86ft) The MCY 86 has a cruise speed of 24km and a maximum speed of 29km.Also its sumptuous interior houses precious woods and materials such as white alabaster, marble and even mosaics made from Venetian Murano glass. Even the fabrics and accessories are selected from premier designer fashion houses such as Hermes and Armani.

EXPAT LIVING Such opulent luxury is bound to appeal to the number of Thais coming to Pattaya from Bangkok who have increasingly come to enjoy the boating lifestyle here over the last 5 years. In fact Ocean Marina’s close proximity to the capital makes it a desirable coastal destination and weekend getaway for the capital’s 8+ million inhabitants and more and more Thai people are visiting the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat show to research boating, buy from the show and learn about the possibilities of chartering boats to enjoy the beautiful nearby waters with 43 islands only 1 hour away by boat. Having recognised this growth in boating interest and subsequent need for more berths, Ocean Marina has undergone a phased expansion over recent years and is now, with 380 berths for boats up to 50 metres, the largest marina in South East Asia. In addition to the impressive line-up of boats, cars and luxury lifestyle exhibitors, highlights for visitors to the Pattaya Boat Show include daily yacht cruises, kayak and paddleboat trials, jetpack flying board demonstrations, games, a food and drinks festival, and the Boat and Yacht Thailand Conference. The organizers are expecting more the 6,000 visitors this year and early exhibitor confirmations for the show include top dealerships : Simpson Marine and Boat Lagoon with yachting and luxury boat brands : Azimut Yachts, Beneteau, Cranchi, CNB Yachts, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Monte Carlo Yachts, Prestige, Princess Yachts, Viking Yachts,Wider, Admiral and San Lorenzo.

I
t never fails to amaze me, every time I interview one of our guests for this column it demonstrates how little I actually know about Pattaya. And this month was no different as I had the opportunity to have a coffee and a chat with Thomas Raldorf. As the name suggests Thomas hails from Denmark, but his English was fluent and erudite. I had been give little brief about my interviewee other that he was in racing, and as it turned out that was a big understatement. Thomas first came to Thailand in 1994, and like so many expats, fell in love with the Kingdom. He previously had worked in America and the Bahamas, but the Land of Smiles enchanted him.Three years later an opportunity came along to work full-time as a travel guide in Thailand, but he also traveled extensively in Laos and Vietnam. During this time he found that communicating with his fellow colleagues was proving difficult so set about learning the Thai language, which now he is also fluent in.
We started talking about how he first got interested in motorsport, and it all came down to his father. His father was actually racing cars whilst Tomas was being born, so it is not an understatement to say Thomas had motor racing pumping through his very blood.I was curious to why so many Scandinavians were so good at racing, and Thomas went on to explain that the Danish government is extremely good at promoting and subsidising the sport which encourages people to drive. Thomas's first dalliance with racing was at a motor club his father had enrolled him into at the tender age of ten. His preference was for bikes but he was persuaded to try a go-kart. That first session hooked him, and from then on it was four wheels all the way.Thomas was heavily influenced during this period by Jan Magnussen who became a multiple world champion with McClaren and indeed his son Kevin Magnussen today drives F1 for Renault. It is easy to see the influences that helped form the obvious passion Thomas has for the sport. During the whole conversation he was delightfully engaging and his genial face betrayed a real love for motor sport. He might be a very excellent driver but a card sharp I very much doubt. Then in 1998 Thomas thought he would try racing in Thailand. For those like me who are pretty ignorant of motor sport in Thailand, I was not aware how popular it is and how many tracks there are.Thomas bought an engine over from Denmark and built a go-kart, he won the Thai National Championship and beat 11 factory drivers. Subsequently the following year he was driving for a factory team and at the wheel of a 110km kart. This era was fundamental in the growth of motor sport in Thailand, and today Thailand actually has two drivers racing in GP3, which is only two steps down from F1. Both of these Thailand drivers actually were first and second on the grid at the last race at Silverstone. One of the drivers, Sandy Stuvik had been taught how to drive from the age of ten by Thomas. In the years 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Thomas won the Thai National Go-Kart Championships and now had a big sponsor with The Pizza Company. In 2007 the team decided to step up a level and entered motorsport, undaunted Thomas won his first ever race in a car which was the Toyota Vios “One Make Race. As the name suggests all the cars are identical and the race is purely down to drivers skill.Thomas and his sponsorship team then graduated year by year into higher class racing, and in 2010 they built a Subaru Imprezza with 800bhp. The second year of racing the Subaru he naturally won the Championship.

EXPAT LIVING I was aware there was a racing track in Pattaya but not what class of racing took place there, Thomas informed me it was 20 years old but technically quite difficult, it is graded at FIA 4 but apparently a new track is supposedly on the way. What did surprise me is that type of cars you can regularly see racing at the Pattaya circuit. Porsche, Lamborghini, Mercedes etc. In fact put a date in your diary to pop along on the 10th & 11th of September to see TV stars, celebrities, well known Thai personalities, all taking to the track in Pattaya. Some of the cars featured will be from the Australian Super 8 series.Other top motorsport events you should be aware of are the massive half-yearly racing events that take place at the Burriram FIA track, and the amazing Bang Seng festival which draws over 200,000 fans during the weekend. Presently Thomas has gone back to the 1500cc class and is racing a Honda City, He now has a great team of sponsors behind him; Contrix, Singha and CEA amongst others. The plan for next year is that the team will step up to the top level again and are looking at a Porsche 997 to compete with. Time had absolutely flown by the time I looked at the clock, it is easy to get embroiled into the world of Thomas Raldorf, as his passion and enthusiasm captivates you 100% of the time. Although money in motorsport Thailand is not anything like F1, his team and many others like them get heavily involved with charity work for the local Pattaya community. Like all the Personalities we feature, Thomas is putting so much back into the country that now is his adopted home.

My FBI profiler friend This is the time of year when most people in the West start thinking about how much they have spent over the holidays and how much liquid cash they will have to face the coming winter. One of the great things about living in Thailand is that you can celebrate life every week and not need to depend on too much money for a good time with your friends or family. It is generally not a time when people think about saving and investing but Thailand contains such a diverse mix of people that I am sure right now someone is considering how best to invest the capital from a property sale in their home country, how best to live here and leave their money secure in a first world currency or simply how to get a better return on their investments. If you are that no risk investor and leave everything in an offshore bank rather than a balanced portfolio then over the past few years you would have lost out with deposit paltry returns. I would love to have had the training of an F.B.I. profiler. I would really like to know the profile of a person who leaves his savings to some bank (let’s face it, not many people I know have had a great relationship with their banks during their working lives) But now they are happy to let their bank feast on their lifetime earnings while they live on the interest pittance the bank gives them annually.
56 56
If you fit this profile has it taken you a year or longer to finally purchase a house in Thailand at one tenth the price of a house in your home country? Have you studied the brochures on every car on the Thai market for a year and then bought a Honda Wish motorcycle ?. Please don’t get me wrong. I admire thrift in people but when they let the investment tail wave the lifestyle

dog then I sometimes think that these people would be happier with a simple monthly pension and their life mapped out for them. I have stated here before that this investor type should look at products which suit their risk profile but which have the potential for upside growth.
Then there is the person who takes advise puts some money in speculative funds the majority in balanced funds and a little in guaranteed funds. They usually understand the concept that a well balanced portfolio over time looks after itself. It will return a lifestyle appropriate to the individual needs of its owner. If he wants to go to the USA, Europe or Japan for a vacation or an emergency then there is no problem. I think my FBI profiler would say this individual looked for a

few weeks at different houses then bought the best he could afford (interesting that a year later while his bank friend is still thinking the property bought a year ago has increased in price. Then he decided to rent a car for 6 months before deciding that it was possible to drive in Thailand every day without damage to life and limb. It has often been said that fear is a dominant emotion in many peoples life. My profiler tells me that people who let the banks control their lifestyle have a huge fear of loss. If the banks fulfilled and put them in emotional balance then hey go and do it. The problem is that they also have a fear of loosing the gains their portfolio friends make. Then the hideous four horsemen-Terror Bewilderment, Frustration and Despair come and haunt their lives with fear again. Perhaps after all under the mattress is the best place for this guy’s wealth. To be serious though tailor your investments and savings to what best suits your mental makeup. If you are content to let the banks profit from your wealth then let them. If on the other hand you want to take advantage of recovering equity markets then contact your adviser. He may not be an FBI profiler but make sure he is a good Financial Profiler

A Satisfied Customer – a Magazine Reader !
I
n today's world of the internet, social media, and an appetite for instant news and information, it's no wonder that the magazine industry is having a hard time keeping up. However there are many of us who still love to sit down with their favorite magazine and flick through the pages.
I was born in the 60s and magazines played a huge role in my life.I cut my teeth on the magazines my parents always had around...Life, Reader's Digest, Look, Mechanics Illustrated, Field and Stream, and the like. Then ass I grew up I started reading magazines that appealed more to my own interests...National Lampoon, Whole Earth Catalog, Backpacker, Esquire, Black Bel and these magazines literally shaped my life. They brought me in-depth stories about things that I really cared about, and they occupied big chunks of my time. They were meant to be read, re-read, referred to, discussed, referred to some more, re-read again...they were the repositories of critical and detailed information on the things I and my friends were most interested in, and we saved them like treasure. Some of these magazines are still being published, and compared to the way we get much of our information today, their use must seem slow and difficult to younger generations...the long, information-dense stories actually have to be read and thought about. These days we're used to getting our news, information, and entertainment in high-speed, digital-aged bits and bites of text, audio, and video. We want our specific questions answered, our specific biases confirmed, or our specific funny bones tickled immediately so we can move on to the next tidbit as quickly as possible. Call me old fashioned, but I'm glad I grew up in the magazine age, and I'm glad they're still around, because I still like to dig in and read about things that interest me from a magazine I can hold in my hands and savor. Don't get me wrong...I'm no Luddite. I'm a huge fan of digital information, and "Have Laptop, Will Travel" is my unofficial motto. It actually makes my lifestyle of living and working abroad possible. Of course, there are now thousands of online resources about living overseas but I still read the Pattaya Trader as there's something about getting the newest edition and settling in on the couch with it, flipping through it, checking out the table of contents, skimming the headlines, then digging in to the stories that beg to be read first. I still do it...even though I moved to Pattaya over 15 years ago. Having the Trader in my hands appeals to the thoughtful, deliberate, unhurried way I was raised to consume information. I can't tell you how many happy afternoons and evenings I've spent like that, but I can tell you that I value every one.If that makes me old fashioned, it's a title I'll gladly accept.

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya.
SOLUTIONS
So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily

No sex please, we’re Thai
N
ever let it be said that I don’t keep up with the news. Wherever I am in the world, I have a masochistic desire to hear about all the trouble and strife in which the world around me is floundering. Safe in my emotional bunker, I laugh in the face of death and the seven deadly sins being evenly distributed across the globe by some evil, sadistic joker. Jack Nicholson, I scoff thee! Therefore I was happy to read an AAPReuters report from the 17th of July that “Thai authorities target brothels in sex industry crackdown.” Prostitution has been illegal in Thailand for many decades but now the Thai tourism minister is “pushing to rid the country of its ubiquitous brothels” and, I must say, it is about time. Personally, I visit Thailand to see temples, museums and places of cultural interest. If you don’t believe me, just ask any Australian immigration officer who, before departure, asks me the purpose of my trip to Thailand. I congratulate the Thai government for taking on this Quixotic quest even though thousands of cultures and hundreds of countries have failed in the past. Wishing to help as much as I can, I do have a few concerns the powers that be may like to address. It goes without saying that the government should eradicate the sexual exploitation of minors and those sold or forced into prostitution, so I will confine my argument to consenting adults here. The first hurdle is evolution which, to date, has been very successful. Evolution installed two of the greatest forces of nature in the brains of all living things – the most powerful being self-preservation and second is reproduction of the species. In humans (and probably all living things), evolution made the initial act of reproduction pleasurable so that we would be more likely to do it. The desire for such pleasure is ingrained in our DNA and so strong, there is nothing we can do about it. This would not be a problem in a world where every male and every female could find a lifetime partner and settle down to marital bliss till death us do part. However, some people find it difficult to attract a partner. Modern society dictates you must have the ‘body beautiful’ - lean with a light tan and a six-pack stomach for men; women should be svelte with large breasts. But evolution is a crap shoot and, along with many wonderful people, has created ugly people and people with no redeeming social qualities. Another problem is people who settle down to marry often became discontented over time, with the union ending in divorce. Other marriages result in one of the partners dying, while advances in modern medicine mean people are generally living longer and the proportion of older people in the community is growing. Our political masters are telling us having sex is illegal unless it is within marriage or between consenting adults, neither of whom is seeking financial gain. Anyone providing a pay-for-service to those who can not get sexual

interaction any other way, is committing a crime. The result is those people described above are left to a life of solitude because of age or appearance and we are creating a society of wankers.“Thailand is home to an extensive sex industry, largely catering to Thai men, but the Tourism Minister played down the role of the sex industry in drawing visitors. "Tourists don't come to Thailand for such a thing. They come here for our beautiful culture." Of course they do. I recall a report some years ago stating that approximately 95% of the sex industry here caters exclusively to Thai men. This leaves us with the question of how one defines prostitution. A guy enters a bar one night, meets with a woman who, after some light conversation, consents to go back to her room and have sex with him for an agreed amount of money. Is she a prostitute? According to the law, yes she is.Then there is the guy meeting a woman in a restaurant and, after buying her an expensive meal, she consents to go back to her room and have sex with him. Is she a prostitute? In court, the prosecution would charge that she received goods and/or services in return for sex and that he paid her in goods and/or services in return for sex. The goods in this case were the meal and drinks. What about a guy taking a woman out for a meal and a movie? Perhaps he even buys her a bunch of flowers. This scenario is played out every day by millions of people throughout the world. Did he pay out a lot of money with the expectation of sex afterwards? Most probably. Did she accept his ‘gifts’ with the expectation of sex afterwards? Possibly. Is she a prostitute? Of course not. Should the government go against a 3,000 year old trend and successfully eradicate prostitution, what will they do with the approximately “123,530 sex workers in Thailand (according to a 2014 UNAIDS report)”?“One former sex worker from a north eastern province told Reuters she entered Bangkok's sex trade at the age of 19 and earned up to 5,000 baht ($143.14) a night, nearly 20 times the minimum wage of 300 baht ($8.59) per day.”"No one wants to work in this business, but it's fast and easy money," she said. And therein, as they say, lies the rub. Should the government provide alternative work for this army of mainly unskilled workers? I can’t envisage many of them being happy about giving up a lucrative career in exchange for 300 baht a day sweating it out in some factory. Should the government repatriate them back to their families in the provinces where they would be an extra mouth to feed with no visible means of support? Again, not very appealing for them or their families. In the final analysis the question of prostitution is a moral and health issue, not a legal one. Apart from protecting minors and those forced into it by threats, politicians might consider leaving the decision up to the individuals involved and look to easier problems to solve.
