The Elephant Village Pattaya

O

f late there have been an increasing number of complaints about the use of the chain and hook in elephant camps in Thailand. The owner of the Elephant Village in Pattaya, Khun Phairat knows a lot about elephants having been a keeper for now more than forty years. He wishes it to be known that the Elephant Village uses the hook and chain mainly for the elephant’s own safety . This is because elephants can be spooked and run for many reasons: the sound of machinery near by, the smell of a fire, even the sound of another animal or an unfamiliar smell . If elephants become alarmed they can stampede and weighing an average of 3 to 5 tons cause major damage and distress to everything in the surrounding area including themselves. The chain and hook is therefore used to stop this happening.

The elephant village was opened in 1973 as a sanctuary for former working elephants it provides these magnificent creatures with a safe haven where they can live out their lives with dignity. The village is a private company which does not receive any government grant or company sponsorship.

We run the business for our family and our elephants. We guarantee that our elephants are well treated

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

By JOHN BORTHWICK

The daisy-chain islands of the Maldives are famous for romantic resorts. But after you’ve done the eat-drink-get frisky thing, what else is there to do? Try these. Diving and snorkeling.

Most island resorts have a dive centre from where they run excursions out to the local reefs. The drop-offs and channels here can be spectacular, with the strong currents between islands also providing long drift dives. Bring your certificate, try an introductory dive or do a full PADI course at North Male resorts like Centara Ras Fushi and Cinnamon Dhonveli. Snorkeling here can be almost as good. Just dive off your boat or swim out from the resort beach to where the reef is littered with clown fish, cornet fish, fusiliers, Moorish Idol fish — a menagerie of simile fish. There’s a good chance, too, of encountering turtles and spinner dolphins.

Male Sightseeing. A trip to Male is one of the few chances you have to meet urban Maldivians “at home”. With an area of less than six sq km and a population of 150,000 people, this is one of the world’s smallest capitals. Its handful of attractions include Sultan Park, the President’s modest palace, goldendomed Grand Friday Mosque and 17th century Hukuru Mosque (which non-Muslims can't enter), plus good spots for eating such as waterfront Citron and mid-town Seagull Cafe. The harbour esplanade sees a constant shuttle of ferries and resort launches although the traditional, wooden, Viking-prowed dhonis of old have mostly disappeared, as have the shoreline cannons left by the Portuguese who were slaughtered for their presumptive invasion back in 1573. Fishing.

The Maldives waters are a riot of marine life from coral polyps to whale sharks, neither of which will be much interest to fisherman looking for a catch. The waters are equally rich in catchable, edible species such as red snapper, sailfish, wahoo, grouper and yellow fin tuna. On live-aboard dive boats and surf boats there is almost always a trawling line or two in the water or a couple of serious rods in action at the stern. Not surprisingly, sashimi, straight from hook to plate, is often on the menu for dinner. Fishing gear is standard on most boats but dedicated anglers often bring their own rods.

Village Excursions. For decades resort islands and village islands were separated by a bikini line, so to speak. The two cultures — traditional Sunni Muslim and international hedonist — could meet but not collide. That is, tourists stayed only on resort islands or Male, but not on village islands. That has now changed and foreigners are now allowed to stay in the villages. Already there are some 300 guesthouses and homestays across the country. Village islands are often so small that you can see blue ocean at each end of the main street. In between will be neat coral-block or concrete homes, corner stores, a mosque, school, gardens and often a bunch of friendly kids. The dress code for local women ranges from niquabs to jeans. Visitors should just dress modestly and not flash excessive flesh. Whale Sharks and Mantas. Land constitutes less than one

percent of the Maldives 90,000 square kilometres of ocean area so it’s little surprise that any charismatic creatures are found below rather than above the waves. Giant whale sharks and manta rays are on the international Red List as species in decline in most places but are still present in numbers in the Maldives. Sign up for spotting cruise and keep your fingers crossed and camera poised. You’ll probably also spot dolphins and several species of sea turtles, such as hawksbill, loggerhead and olive-ridley.

Surfing. The reefs of Male Atoll are littered with dreamy, warm

water waves wearing eccentric names like Honkys, Sultans, Jailbreak and Pasta Point. You get to them by being a guest at a resort with a private reef (such as Lohifushi or Cinnamon Dhonveli) or via liveaboard surf cruise. The southern islands too have great waves at places like Laamu Atoll and to South Huvadhu Atoll, just above the Equator. Brilliant waves, they all break over reefs, so the magic Maldives are no place to learn to surf.

Getting There. It’s a four-hour flight from Bangkok to Male with Bangkok Airways. www.bangkokair.com.

Looking Forward to Another Season’s Football

It is that time of year again when we are on the precipice of an avalanche of Premier League football. It seems like the final whistle of the 2016/17 has just sounded, but here we are again waiting for the referee to blow and get things under way. Last season, the Champions Chelsea never seemed in danger of not winning the league, Antonio Conte’s men won at a canter and although the seven point margin over second place Tottenham Hotspur did not seem that excessive, the men from the Kings Road were convincing winners. Whereas Sunderland ended rock bottom and were relegated, a dismal season yet again from the Black Cats, and David Moyes’s team swapped places with their neighbours Newcastle United, who were promoted from the Championship as champions.Middlesborough and Hull both followed Sunderland’s demise but new boys Brighton and Huddersfield will compete with the elite of English football this season. Chelsea, Spurs, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United will all compete in the Champions League in 2017/18 and it is hoped that the English clubs will make a better fist of it this time around. It was not the EPL’s best display in the top European league during 2016/2017. Manchester United fared much better in the Europa League by beating Ajax in the 2016/17 final, which qualified them for the Champions League with the other four. Arsenal and Everton will be the two English Clubs competing in the Europa League in 2017/18, and both will hope to emulate the Red Devils performance. The Europa League has often been touted as the albatross around the Premiership clubs necks who are competing, in terms of the amount of extra games needed to be played in the Europa League directly affecting their Premier League form. Both Arsenal and Everton will definitely need to strengthen their squads if they are serious about challenging for the Champions League positions. In fact the Europa League has long been criticised for its format and the fact that halfway through the competition another bunch of teams kicked out of the Champions League joins in, which does nothing to endear the competition to its dissenters. Jose Mourinho brought silverware once again to Manchester United with the FA Cup, whilst Arsene Wenger may have saved his job when Arsenal beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.

SPORT & LEISURE

So after this brief summary the first question to answer is how will the new boys perform in the Premiership ? It must be said that Newcastle United are old hands at playing in the Premiership, and with a respected manager such as Raffa Benitez at the helm they should definitely fare pretty well. Brighton had a good season last year and it was unlucky that they did not end up as champions, their football ethos is similar to one of their neighbours Bournemouth, and if they can emulate the Cherries and stick to their attacking football, then they might stave off relegation. As for Huddersfield, they have a mountain to climb, and if they survive their first ever season in the Premier League it will be a big surprise.

The next question is can anybody break into the top six positions of the Premiership. Tottenham Hotspur have proved that indeed that there is a top six elite clubs and have cemented their position after an excellent season. Mauricio Pochettino has moulded a young talented team, and with Golden Boot winner Harry Kane signing a new contract they should be a powerful force once more. But playing at Wembley might hinder their success and scupper any real title hopes. Everton comfortably finished seventh last time out, but their inclusion in the Europa League may test Ronald Koeman’s squad to the limit. However, they have been very busy in the transfer market and have made some marquee signings in the close season, in particular the return of their talisman Wayne Rooney. Whether they can break into the top six remains to be seen, especially with their tricky fixtures at the start. There seems to be no other team capable of breaking into the super six at the moment unless somebody comes along right out of the blue. As for who qualifies for the Champions League this is a bigger poser. Perhaps Arsenal or Everton may emulate Manchester United gaining access through the back door, but for the immediate league qualifying positions, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs look favourites with Manchester United and Liverpool fighting for the last spot. Chelsea and City have strengthened with serious intention, and Tottenham’s squad is as good as last year. Manchester United also seem more balanced under the direction of The Chosen One, and with the addition of Romelu Lukaku anything is possible. Although Liverpool have added to their squad any injuries could really scupper their chances, as the squad is still lightweight on quality. Now is the time for the proverbial chopping block to come out, and for the author to bow down and make his predictions. In reverse order, firstly the teams to get relegated will be Huddersfield, Burnley and Brighton. The top four teams will be Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City with the eventual winners being Manchester United. The F.A Cup will be won by Everton, and the League Cup winners will be Chelsea. The Premier League is going from strength to strength and the old days of one or two teams dominating it seem to be over. The super six is refreshing for English football, it makes the competition even harder and more games have significance. And with Everton about to join all the fun the super six will shortly become the magnificent seven. “the super six will shortly become the magnificent seven.” The big conundrum is why the English teams are finding it so hard to perform well in the Champions League, the last team to lift the trophy was Chelsea back in 2011/2012 and things have not really been good since then. With the quality of the English game and the number of world class players playing in the Premiership, surely things must change soon. And it would not come to the Trader as a big surprise if it was this season.

The day started off under clear skies with a light breeze on the Lakes & Ocean combination. The field of 108 keen players only included 11 Ladies compared to the previous month's high of nearly 20. With the fairways & condition of the course having improved considerably over the past few months, the ball was played as it lay. However, with the upcoming Ladies Pro tournament, there were a lot of tees well forward, to protect the tee boxes for the Pros. This resulted in an abundance of high scores, with anything under 40 points not figuring in the prizes. As with most months, there is generally a standout performer or 2 on the day. This month it was Jens Olsson the clear star of the day with his gross 74 to win the Low Gross, a technical & his 40 points enough for 3rd in the A Flight.

The Ladies winner was Wan (30) with her day’s best Stablefored score of 44 points, with Nantaporn Rukkid a further 2 points behind in 2nd spot. C flight, for handicap 22+, required a countback for all 3 placings, after Gary Jones (27), Dan Margetts (27) & Kenny Chung (27) all signed for a solid 41 points. Gary just getting the best of the trio, with 24 points on the back 9, Dan getting 2nd with his 23 points, while Kenny had to settle for 3rd after signing for 21 on the back 9. B flight, 15 – 21 handicappers, went to Hong Hi Wai (18) with an equal men’s best of 43 points, just a solitary point

ahead of Kent Svensson (18). 3rd spot required a countback, eventually won by Keith Buchanan (18) over Tom Thompson 22/21 on the back 9, after both signed for 40 points.

It was Martin Kempton (14) leading the way in A flight, 0 – 14, with his equal men’s best of 43 points. Dennis Paul (14) picked up the silver placing with a strong 42 points, while Low Gross winner Jens Olsson (6) got 3rd on countback over Larry Immelthun, Pelle Pettersson & Frode Brandt, after all finished with 40 points. All 3 did pick up at least 1 technical in their round, so didn’t go home empty handed. Honourable mentions for multiple technical wins on the day should go out to Grant Jackson, , Jack Grindvold, Pelle Pettersson & Gentry Harrington. Dave and his team from the Sportsman & the Hemingways crew did a fantastic job of keeping all the golfers and their guests satisfied in the food & drinks area. Now Fishing is a “REAL” Adventure by Chris Millar “The Highlander”

Adventures in Pattaya are 10 fold and I am sure can be enjoyed by most but how many think that fishing is a pain in the proverbial and not a “Great Big Adventure” ? I have fished all over the world but the adventure I remember most has to be going to fish in the Motherwell Boating Pond in Lanarkshire Scotland. My brother’s 9 ft Milbro Fibre Glass rod and his Mitchell reel was precious to him so when the bus stopped at Motherwell cross to let me off and I realized as I walked down the hill to Hamilton, that I had left the rod on the bus I was distraught. I ran to the bus terminal across from the boating pond in tears explaining to a clippie what had happened... She got me into the main office and the manager phoned the Wishaw office to see if it had been handed in – Yes it had and one of the drivers who had to go home would drop it in for me.... Biscuits and Ginger (Ginger in Scotland is what the English would call “Lemonade”) was fed to me and to be honest I’m sorry the rod turned up as quickly as it did. Well I got fishing and went down to the wee island on Motherwell Boating Pond (now called Strathclyde Park as it has since been made into a yachting school). I set up and stuck on a worm and a bulb float.. I stood there for about an hour when the float started to dip. I struck and caught my first Roach ... I should have but I didn’t put it back because my brothers would have said I had caught nothing. Mrs. Toner’s cat next door got it – but it was an adventure that is lost to a multitude of kids and adults alike.

Remember this story if over the coming months you decide to get off your backside and enjoy the outside life beside a lake or river in Pattaya (And there are plenty) Mr. O’Reilly wanted to go ice fishing. He had read several books on the subject, and finally, after getting all the necessary equipment together, he made his way out onto the ice. After positioning his comfy stool, O’Reilly started to make a circular cut in the ice. Frighteningly, from up above, a mighty voice boomed, 'There are no fish under the ice.' Startled, O’Reilly moved farther down the ice, poured himself a large whisky for shock, and began to cut yet another hole. Again, from the heavens, the voice bellowed, 'There are no fish under the ice.' O’Reilly, now became very concerned so he moved way down to the opposite end of the ice, set up his stool, and began again to cut his new ice-hole.The voice rang out once more, 'There are no fish under the ice.' At this O’Reilly, stopped, looked upwards and said, 'Is that you, Lord?' The voice replied, 'No, this is the Ice-Rink Manager.'

Pattaya Personality - John Collingbourne

By Gloria Jones

W

hen John Collingbourne tells you he is 75 years old and then talks about what he’d like to do when he eventually retires- you get a measure of the man ! His extraordinary energy and fun loving personality make him a worthy recipient of this month’s Pattaya Personality slot as anyone who has been to one of his auctions will attest.

The problem is that should John finally retire he would certainly be a hard act to follow. As diligently as he might train his successors he would also need to give them some of the charm that he is famous for and of course they won’t have the welsh brogue ! It is the good natured ribbing of his customers that make the Collingbourne auctions such fun where people go as much to watch the auctioneer in action as they do to pick up a bargain. He is very aware of this and recently took tremendous delight in his protegee using one of their favourite phrases: when a customer made a low opening bid for a picture: “Is that just for the nail and string or are you wanting to buy the painting as well ? “ Over his years in Pattaya John has seen many changes, most recently after the Brexit vote when the pound dropped a full 10 baht against the Thai currency. Customers have sold up and moved away, not just the British but also ,he cites, Australian and American friends who have left Pattaya either because financially they can no longer work to support living here or due to medical issues. Either way Collingbourne's will help in terms of turning their possessions into cash before they leave and many people have benefited from the sale of furniture, cars, bikes and general possessions before returning home So how many years exactly has John been here in Pattaya ? Well it was really a millennium change of scene for him as after visiting a friend in Thailand he decided to make the place his home by buying a resort in Rayong which he successfully ran for 10 years. This he was able to do as he’d already had a hotel in Usk South Wales bought with the proceeds of his fish and chip shop (John has had many different businesses over the years) but he found the work gruelling with little time off and so working by the sea in the sun had quite some appeal. The resort in Rayong was complete with an air strip for friends and guests to drop by on - and one such guest to paraphrase;”:liked the place so much he bought it” as he made a great offer for the hotel. So John having sold his resort ,decided to return to another favourite occupation that of auctioneer, with a plot in Pattaya.

The first Collingbourne foray into auctions started in Newport where John also had a couple of antique shops. Although the “bottom fell out of the antique market in 1998” Newport Auctions continues today and is still a family firm run by John’s son. In fact the idea for Newport Auctions came about because John was driving tankers and handling distribution for large companies such as Texaco and needed a yard in which to park the tankers. What he ended up with was large enough to also house an MOT Car servicing business and also leave room for car auctions the business that remains today. What is clear is that his experience of running auctions as well as his love for antiques means that John has found a business he loves to work in - no wonder he finds it so hard to leave. Rather as i would be given the same opportunity, John finds himself like a kid in a sweet shop unable to resist the temptation of buying whatever catches his eye - much to the consternation of his wife Yada who sees their lovely home ever filling with extra purchases ! His current favourite possession he tells me, is a piano accordion that with the aid of floppy discs plays by itself and gives John his daily fix of Strauss at breakfast time ! So John’s purchases are now spilling out into his latest venture his wine bar adjacent to Collinbourne’s Auctions which is a delightful place where he can spend time with friends and clients “chew the cud”, talk about the ever changing face of Pattaya and listen to the extensive collection of music on his Jukebox. John likens himself to “A vicar waiting for Sunday” although his day of course is Saturday I ask what he would like to do should he ever finally hang up the gavel ? He replies that he would continue to deal in antiques maybe import and export because now the option of bidding and selling online has opened up a world of options. Also he would indulge his love of cars and steam engines - not much of a departure from his current employed status then ! However as John is lucky enough to have found an occupation that indulges his hobbies and passions my prediction is that he will be on that block gavel in hand for some time yet !

“If we learn from each success, and each failure, and improve ourselves through this process, then at the end, we have fulfilled our potential and performed well” Ferdinand Porsche After the dramatic events that unfolded in Rounds One and Two of the Thailand Super Series in Buriram, it was time to get to grips with the tight twisty streets of Bang Saen in Chonburi. The Bang Saen street race is like no other in Thailand, a favourite of the drivers and one where concentration is vital in order to keep you away from the unforgiving walls. This quiet little fishing village comes alive for one week as teams from across the globe join the event and are cheered on by more than 200,000 spectators over the course of the week. Before any thoughts of Bang Saen began, the UNIXX – TR-Motorsport had held a test day at the Bira International Circuit on the outskirts of Pattaya. The purpose of this test was to confirm that the fuel pressure problems that arose in Buriram were now fixed and to give Thomas, The Danish Dynamo much-needed track time in the Porsche 997. The team completed over 70 laps with no issues to report and Thomas, although very tired felt a lot more comfortable with the car and its setup. A sterling job by the B-Quik Racing Mechanics, who, after Buriram worked tirelessly to replace numerous parts associated with fuel pressure.

Free Practice

The Team arrived in Bang Saen early in the week to begin preparations and everything was looking good for the weekend ahead. Due to the extra busy schedule this year the GTM & GTM+ Cars would share Free Practice with the GTC class which resulted in a very heavily congested track. Thomas struggled to find the space for a clean lap as the faster GTM cars passed him around the circuit so he decided to complete just three race pace laps before pulling into the pits to make adjustments to the setup and prepare for session two. Even though the track resembled a busy Friday in Bangkok, Thomas still set a very credible time of 1.47.131 putting him 2nd in class. Session two was a vast improvement on the first session, after a few tweaks to the setup Thomas ventured out early to try and find some clean air and managed to get 7 competitive laps completed, a quick dash to the pits to make some minor adjustments followed by 3 more laps left Thomas with a fastest time 1.43.804 in the GTC Class.

Qualifying

After the data from Free Practice was analysed it was apparent that Pole Position was well within the reach of the team, it would all depend on if Thomas could get a clean lap and the safety car wasn't deployed which could shorten or even end the session. Again Thomas ventured out early to try to gain an advantage and it seemed to have worked until a few slower cars on the track hampered his first few attempts, however, as the session progressed Thomas found himself in space and set a blistering lap of 1.43.355 breaking the lap record and putting the car firmly in Pole Position for Races 1 & 2.

Race 1 Thomas, well known for his good starts delivered once again making the perfect getaway up the main straight. Although Thomas seemed to have everything under control he had to keep pushing as the second place driver and Team Mate Khun Pete in the Porsche GT4 was now setting fastest laps and was beginning to gain on the #29 Porsche. Thomas responded by setting fastest laps himself and a new lap record of 1.42.766 as he hurtled around the street circuit and increased his lead. Even when the inevitable safety car appeared and bunched the field up, the chasing cars could do nothing to catch the Porsche. Thomas gave a masterclass in precision driving around the beach resort hitting every apex perfectly and following the optimum line with every lap. The victory came at a canter and with it 20 vital points in the race for the drivers' championship. Team Mate Khun Pete, followed up with a second place to help the Porsche duo also claim the Team Trophy for Race 1.

Race 2 Due to the success in Race 1, an extra 30 kgs were added to the car this was on top of the 25 that had already been added due to the results in Buriram, this totalled to an extra 55 kgs making the car a lot trickier to handle and leaving absolutely no room for error. A fresh set of Yokohama tires were put on the car to help increase the grip and try to negate the effects of the extra weight. Another trademark start from Thomas left with him a small gap from the second place Toyota, driven by Khun Manat. The extra weight was causing the car to slide which allowed Khun Manat to close each time and forced Thomas to push that bit more. The safety car was deployed, again bunching up the field leaving Thomas under pressure from the Toyota, however, as the lights went green once more Thomas was able to manage the gap all the way to the chequered flag and claim another 20 points. Thomas again set the fastest lap of the race albeit nearly one second slower than his lap in Race 1 due to the extra weight.

Standings After the stunning performance in the Beach Resort of Bang Saen Thomas and the team are now just 2 points behind Khun Manat in the race for the Driver’s Championship and are leading the Team Championship by 11 points from Team Toyota. There are now 4 races left with a maximum of 80 points to race for so everything is wide open and it promises to be a very exciting climax to the Thailand Super Series 2017. UNIXX – TR-Motorsport will next be in action at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram for Rounds 5 & 6 of the Thailand Super Series August 17-20. For more information on the team visit www.tr-motorsport. com and follow them on Facebook, search TR Motorsport Thailand. Things to know before investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds Let’s face it; nobody ever became a millionaire just by saving money. If you want to increase your wealth to its full potential, you have got to invest it wisely over a period of time. Investing in stocks, mutual funds, and bonds is an advisable option, provided you know the basics of investing well or consult a financial adviser. Here are some handy tips to consider before you invest your hard-earned money in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

Stocks Historically, stocks are still the best out of all asset classes delivering around 10% average returns over longer periods. Ideally, you shouldn’t invest in stocks if you are looking for short-term gains. Stocks are riskier; prices fluctuate based on everything from interest rates to investor sentiment to even weather, but what matters over the long-term are the earnings they deliver.

The key is to diversify your stocks portfolio by purchasing stocks of different companies in different industries to dilute the risks. Over the short-term the performance of your stock is determined by market behavior. However, in the long run, it’s the performance of the company whose stock you buy that determines whether the share prices soar or plunge. Individual stocks do not represent the stock market; a good stock may go up even when the market is going down; bad stocks will underperform regardless of the market trend. In the long-run it is smarter to buy and hold good stocks than to engage in rapid-fire trading. That’s because shortterm trades induce higher taxes and then there are also the costs of trading. Active trading would also require you to pay close attention to stock-price fluctuations.

Mutual Funds Mutual funds can make it easy for you to diversify your portfolio; the risks are shared and costs are low, plus there is a greater flexibility in the types of funds you can invest in.

Mutual funds allow you to begin investing with a few thousand dollars, allowing you to attain a diversified portfolio for much less than you could by investing in stocks. Mutual fund investments are not risk-free; to assess the risk level, check factors such as the fund’s biggest quarterly loss, which will help you prepare for the worst; its beta, which measures the fund’s volatility against the S&P 500; and its standard deviation, which shows how much the fund bounces around its average returns. Don’t chase the winners; funds that outperform over one period do not always win in the long run. Look for consistent long-term performance when choosing a fund.

Bonds Bonds are simpler to understand and manage for the average investor; you loan money for a certain period of time to the issuer, and get it back with interest after the term ends. Bonds are a relatively safer way to grow money, but although their term and interest payment are fixed, the returns can vary. Tax-exempt bonds usually yield less than taxable bonds but they can still be a better choice if the investor is in high-tax bracket. Bond prices go in the opposite direction of interest rates; when interest rates fall, bond prices rise, and vice-versa. Volatile interest rates affect investors if they are not looking to hold the bond to maturity. Don’t forget to seek advice before you go investing; a qualified financial adviser can guide you in selecting the right stocks, bonds, and mutual funds to invest in based on your financial objectives and the amount of risk you are willing to take.

Investment risk and

the risks of thinking you understand it… I guess the advantage of having been around for many years and having dealt with many clients during that time is that you see the real outcome of investment decisions. I recall an early lesson was with one wealthy client who had invested a modest amount via our firm. He had substantial investments in a variety of places and considered himself an experienced investor who was prepared to take some risk. As part of a diversified portfolio equity holdings in many markets can be beneficial for EU based investors. In contrast, investing all of your funds in one of these markets might be considered higher risk. Overall this gentleman had a well-diversified portfolio, so the single investment in these markets was complementary in nature. In terms of his absolute wealth, it was not terribly significant so even if all the companies went bust the chap would not suffer financially. In risk terms, we would say the investment was diversifying in nature and the investor had the financial ability to withstand any losses associated with this portfolio. What we hadn’t really accounted for was the possible impact of fluctuations in the value of the holding on the gentleman’s mental state. It transpired later that the financial reporting for all of the other holdings was carried out on a collective or comprehensive basis. That is, he got one number that summarised and covered the several hundred global holdings that accounted for his wealth. He had never really had to delve into the specific performance of any one investment. In some circumstances however, the Private Banker who had been advising the client had highlighted the outstanding performances of some individual holdings. She had never really pointed out any of the poor performances or in fact the liquidation of one investment that took place in the recent past. I guess she had maybe studied “The Classics” and been a bit concerned about getting shot as the messenger if she had delivered bad news. So when we sent this client a valuation, (we had rather unfortunately prepared at a time of some volatility in the markets) which showed a significant fall in the value of these investments it was the first time he had been confronted with something like this. Up until this point he had only received good news and no news, rather than accurate reporting.

48 48

PATTAYA TRADER

What was his reaction? Well, he was a little distressed to say the least. We were lambasted for our incompetence and poor management as well as having our parentage called into question! This was an interesting lesson for us that helped to formulate a more subjective approach to our client risk profiling. We started to employ some more behavioural or psychological questions in our questionnaire that aimed to capture the client’s mental capacity to cope with the loss as well as their financial ability to withstand any loss. In taking this approach we have found that many clients have found that their perceived appetite for risk is actually different from their actual investment risk profile. In some cases we have proceeded with the original asset allocation with an acknowledgement from the client that things may be more volatile than they can cope with on a bad day. However, in the vast majority of cases we have revised the asset allocation to take account of the new information in terms of the client’s mental ability to cope with losses in their portfolio. I guess the lesson that we should all take from this is to be conscious of the fact that we attach a greater importance to avoiding losses, than we do to receiving gains. I can think of many circumstances where I’ve focussed more on what I’ve had to lose in a certain situation than on what I had to gain. Trying to be aware of our psychological biases can help in many areas of life but especially in investment, where giving up some of the security of a bank account can help us achieve our longer term goals and achieve financial independence. david.thrifty@yahoo.com
