Dear Reader So our second month of coming out “mid month” brings us nicely into the run up for Christmas and my opportunity of wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In these times of uncertainty and unrest with the world news highlighting bombings and shootings we hope to shine a light on some local rays of light, We look at charities in Pattaya that are making efforts to help those less fortunate than ourselves and wonderful characters such as Margi from Hand to Hand who make us all stop and think, especially at this time of year, what we can be doing to help our neighbours. So to help us all get into the Christmas spirit we look at Christmas Markets near (with the article about Jomtien’s night market) and far - with the more glamorous world of the European Christmas markets. Don’t forget it’s your last chance to grab ten thousand baht If you fancy telling us your experiences as an Expat here in Thailand with our competition on page 75 and I look forward to reading all your adventures with prizes for the runners up. Good Luck and wishing you all a very Happy and Peaceful 2016 ! Editor

PATTAYA TRADER

Issue 182 | DECEMBER 2015

By Kevin Cain

HAND 2 HAND PATTAYA TRADER WERE PROUD TO BE ONE OF THE SPONSORS OF THE RECENT SOULED OUT EVENING AT ACCESS INN. HOWEVER, RATHER THAN JUST SEND YOU MORE PHOTOS OF US ALL DRINKING AND HAVING FUN, WE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO SEE WHERE THE MONEY RAISED GOES AND SO WE SENT KEVIN TO HAND TO HAND TO INVESTIGATE. When first meeting Margaret Grainger or Margi as her friends know her, I became drawn to her magnetic personality and the obvious vim and vigour that is her driving force. Margi has been one of the main beneficiaries of the money raised from the fun evenings of Soul, Motown and Northern Soul Music that have been taking place in Pattaya over the last four years. Not all the punters that attend these brilliant nights realise that all the proceeds are donated to local charities, the Hand to Hand Foundation Pattaya being the recipient of a mavellous 61,000 baht from the most recent event. The foundation was formed to help underprivileged children from all backgrounds with everything from education to clothing and even shelter. Margi is the founder and Vice President of Hand to Hand and the ticking heart of the whole operation. When I asked what her motivation was for doing all this she simply said: "Come with me" I then began an extensive tour of the new building and went to meet the children. Margi wanted to explain to people where the money donated by Souled Out had gone to. and how important their continued support was. I could not fathom why an explanation was needed, after all the night was a cracker and everybody got plenty of value for their entrance fee. But Margi knows that making people aware of what Hand to Hand is all about is vitally important. Before I arrived at the Foundation from even a Soi away, I could hear the babbling excitement of young voices. Margi had previously warned me that I would hear the Foundation long before I could see it and she was spot on. There is something about the sound of children's laughter that cannot fail to bring a warm glow to a person and a smile as big as a Hollywood dentists's. No wonder Margi enjoys her vocation as much as she does, it certainly is an enviable environment for anyone to work in and a tonic for the soul.

and nearly all plucked from severe poverty. Hand to Hand gives them a chance in life and a break from the difficulties they all have at home during the time they attend. The Foundation exists totally by the generosity of donations; either food, toys, clothes, stationery or even the sponsorship of a child. Margi will accept any second hand toys that you may have and they will be especially valued at this time of year by the children. Info at www.handtohandpattaya.com

All the children attending were from local slums and Margi was at pains to explain that their care was totally free. She told me people had brought more privileged kids to her and offered to pay for their education and she had turned them down. "If you have money you don't come here" she explained. The children were all busy in their groups either playing, studying or brushing up on their musical education in the new music room. I was surprised that nearly all the kids, even the smallest ones could speak some English. Margi informed me that the children are educated in both Thai and English as soon as they arrive, I was staggered that these unfortunate tots would soon become bi-lingual. The services Hand to Hand offer for the kids are considerable; from baby care, pre-school, scholarships, a kid's club and ministry duties. All the children are from low income families, one parent environments or victims of domestic abuse

Leaving such a wonderful, inspiring place I could not help but think Thank God the world still has people in it like Margi Grainger and all her voluntary colleagues. They make such a difference to so many lives and some that are so small, tiny and fragile they can't even understand the work that is being done for them. But to look at their smiling, beaming faces it seems that they do know that somebody special cares for them. “Souled Out is an excellent vehicle to drive awareness and contribute well needed cash to such worthwhile causes. Soul music has always been driven from the heart and as it's very name suggests it has a conscience. And nothing could be more apt than this music providing much needed help. So pour more talc on the floor, crank up Frank Wilson and get yourself to the next night, not only will you have great fun but also you will be helping the children of Pattaya. The next Souled Out event is scheduled for March 2016 at Access Inn on 3rd Road Pattaya. Check out their Facebook page and of course notifications from The Pattaya Trader to make sure you attend have a fun evening and raise money for worthy causes.

YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING ! Things are really moving fast on Kiss FM as we introduce two more new presenters to entertain you through your week. In last month’s edition we introduced the new station manager: Steve Johnston, who also kick-starts your day with his ‘Morning Kiss’ between 7 and 10. But don’t think he is just sleeping after that! He’s managed to bring in two more lively guys to break up your day with some quality shows. First in line is Neal Bowden, the new drive-time presenter, on between 3 and 7 in the afternoons. Neal isn’t a stranger to these parts, having previously worked on a local station in Phuket - he is certainly clued up on how things are done around here. He began his career many moons ago over in the UK and has spent time presenting in Egypt, Dubai and Oman. When asked why he chose this field of work, he simply replied it is all he has ever wanted to do. A true natural on the mic, you can expect some entertainment, gossip, hilarious anecdotes plus your usual low-downs on the weather along with the latest happenings around town. All of course, spiced up with the best the music industry has to offer. Next up from 7 until 10, is the young Matt Shields. Already donning the nickname ‘Baby Face’ at the station, Matt has had a surprisingly extensive career thus far considering the young snapper is just 26. Learning the tricks of the trade at Bauer Media’s Forth 1, a local station in Edinburgh, the young Scott gained some notoriety locally. Following that fame he worked on a number of other stations across Scotland including most recently Kingdom FM. Matt has also been fortunate to rub shoulders with some of the top stars to-date, most notably Ashley Roberts from the Pussycat Dolls –fwarrgghh! Matt brings a lot of energy to the station, which can be heard in his show as he throws out the best tunes of the current scene. He is also “man in the know” when it comes to music, so expect a lot of up-to-the-minute news on the goings on in the pop world brought with all the flare you’d expect from a young Scott. Oh, and before we forget, he rounds off his week with an hour’s Mixdown of the hottest tunes every Friday between 9 and 10, the perfect way to warm you up for theweekend. Again our thanks to Europva our sponsors for the International News. To find out more about Kiss FM or how you could become a sponsor go to www. Come, Spend, All Ye Faithful

he scene looks like an old-time Christmas card come to life, plus shopping. Snow and church steeples frame a town square where a Yuletide market is in full swing, its stalls laden with handicrafts, gingerbread biscuits and toys not made in China.

The European tradition of local Christmas markets bears little resemblance to Western-style Christmas shopping – you know, that panicked, last-minute mall trawl that results in the giving of undies (wrong size) and hankies (once again) and the receiving of “Didn’t-know-what-to-buy-you” gift vouchers. Austrians and Germans, for instance, have a bit more Yule cred when it comes to Christmas culture. No ersatz Santa Snow for them. The real thing falls like manna from heaven (to soon become slush under-foot) on town squares where, from late November until Christmas, local markets keep alive a long Advent tradition. “It was a magical thing to do,” Ursula, an Austrian friend tells me, recalling the markets and the build-up, all accompanied by heart-starters of mulled wine, bratäpfel (baked apples) and roasted chestnuts. “We would shop at these markets for hand-painted candles and baubles for the Christmas tree. And wooden toys and real souvenirs — not just dorky T-shirts and DVDs,” she says. The markets typically span the four Advent weeks leading up to Christmas and each town puts plenty of effort into its event. In Vienna, giant candies and stars hang from Christmas trees, kids ride the old carousel and market stalls in the narrow lanes of Spittelberg offer the quality crafts like hand-blown glass, rugs and jewellery. Vienna also has Christmas markets at the Karlskirche, Belvedere Palace and Freyung Square. Ice-skating, those old Habsburg palaces, carols, carousels — a Viennese market can seem like the full Christmas calendar come to life. Meanwhile, Salzburg’s market on Cathedral Square dates back to 1491. One chronicler recorded in 1793 that the city’s Nikolaimarkt — St Nicholas Market — ran for the 14 days on either side of the feast of St Nick — Christmas — during which “dolls and sweets are sold and everyone is permitted to sell old or secondhand goods in public." It doesn’t sound quite as racy as go-go damsels on Pattaya’s Walking Street singing, “Jinger ben, jinger ben (aka Jingle Bells) … one dink for me, mister?” but, where there’s a tavern and a town and a season to be frisky … there’s often a killjoy.

In 1903, for instance, Salzburg’s city fathers declared, “Residents of the city are permitted to sell all types of goods excluding food, stimulants and beverages." Right. No doubt those residents got around the latter exclusions even before the ink was dry on the paper or the glühwein on the burghers’ own prissy lips. The Salzburg Christmas Market still takes place beneath the gaze of the city’s grand, baroque cathedral. Countless stalls sell products made especially for the Yule season, such as wooden toys, lanterns, pewter ware and Christmas ornaments. Hawkers do a roaring trade in hot sausages, tea and alcoholic punch to fortify your shopping spirit. In romantic Innsbruck, the Altstadt Christmas Market is known for its huge, illuminated Christmas tree and Tyrolean handicrafts. It is held in the historic Old Town where the narrow lanes are peopled with life-sized giants, princesses and mythical creatures from the world of fairy tales. Just add candles, choirs and kiachln (hot doughnuts laced with sauerkraut or jam). Germany’s old town squares and medieval castles make what the PR hacks would call “a fairy-tale setting” for the Christkindl market fairs that date back to the 14th century. The tradition lives on today in some 150 Christmas markets across the country. In all of them, that hot, spiced wine goes straight to your brain to accelerate the purchasing of even more gifts. Having loaded up on handmade souvenirs and crystal ware, you realise the excess baggage bill on getting it all home is going to be alarming. One solution is to eat, not pack, what you purchase. German Christmas treats not to miss — even if they’ll add to your on-person excess weight — are stollen Christmas cake (dense with dried fruits and nuts), rostbratwürste (charcoal-grilled sausages), gebrannte mandeln (roasted almonds) and marzipanbrot.

Dresden’s Christmas market, the oldest in Germany, dates back to 1434 and boasts the tallest nutcracker in the world, plus the tallest Christmas pyramid, a 15-metre high wooden carousel with angels and nativity scenes. Not to be outdone, Berlin is home to some 60 Christmas markets. The one not to be missed is Weihnachtszauber, or Christmas Magic, at Gendarmenmarkt. Its brightly decorated booths are framed by two illuminated cathedrals and the Concert House, and a popular feature is a large craftsmen’s tent where you can watch toy makers, goldsmiths and wood carvers creating gifts. From Thailand to Transylvania, wherever you shop (whichever mall you trawl), may all your Christmases be bright and all your jinger ben be rung.

Yes Concrete has arrived at Jomtien Night Market “Is this big news” ? I hear you ask. “It most certainly is” I quickly reply. The reason being that with the laying of a concrete slab of about 6 inches (15 cms) as a flooring to the entire area, this previously shabby little market has been somewhat transformed. If you have never been it can be found by travelling along Jomtien Beach Road between Soi 8 and 9 If you have never been it can be found either by travelling along Jomtien Beach Road between Soi 8 and 9 or along Jomtien 2nd road in the direction of Pattaya from Na Jomtien at the Aqua Condo Turning. To then get an idea of how it once was, go to the car park that has now been set up at the back for 20 baht admission and you will see the type of dirty, dusty ground that used to be all over this market. Really it used to be so bad to walk up and down the stalls here that I would rather wear ankle boots than flip flops having found after my first excursion here that upon returning home my feet were filthy ! After all how can one possibly concentrate on shopping with the feel of grit and dirt between one’s toes! Also the vendors themselves are obviously far happier with their lot since the concrete flooring has come in. The covers and posters used to decorate their individual stalls were often filthy and frayed giving the whole place a feel of a UK boot sale - and not one in a pretty country field but more an inner city “let’s use

this old car park” type of affair. Don’t even get me started on the food area where some brave souls even took to putting furniture and yes even soft furnishings our on the grit and the grime to entice people to sit there and enjoy the sea view…..well almost. When the rain fell the ground would turn to a slushy mess, making them surely wonder why they had ever made the effort. However that is all gone now and a huge improvement has been made by the laying of the concrete for the buyers visiting and the vendors who seem to be taking just a little more care with their stalls and displays now. It is open every night with most stalls opening at around 5:30 p.m So for some last minute Christmas shopping why not visit this market ? Unlike the market at Thepprasit road it is open every night with most stalls opening at around 5:30 p.m. There are plenty of Thai Souveniers (“Trippers Tripe” as my old french teacher used to say) that you can take home if you are returning for the festivities. Plenty of elephants, wooden statues silk hangings or toiletries such as Aloe Vera, Coconut oil, Tiger balm and the like Or for those of

LOY KRATHONG MY REMINISCENCES BY KEVIN CAIN My chosen destination this year was Jomtien Beach as it is not usually as crowded as Pattaya Beach and things are a little less hectic. Still there was no room to park your car or motor bike, for that matter but luckily enough it is only a short stroll from where I live. After numerous and prolonged cloud bursts in the late afternoon and early evening the ground was fairly sodden but so what, it was the beach anyway and there was more than a fair chance of getting wet as the evening festivities grew. Luckily for everybody the storms finally passed and the celebrations could start in earnest. Sharing the evening with my friends we easily managed to find a place on the sand and plonked the rugs and towels for our base. The food vendors were doing an excellent job tempting everybody with Thai favourites and already at 7pm the place was packed. The atmosphere was exciting, friendly and noisy and everybody was already enjoying the festival. The night air crackled and fizzed as lanterns lit up the sky and rockets were dangerously released from the hands of giggling youths. As usual the lanterns were dripping their hot wax down on the throng below but nobody seemed to be complaining and just accepted it as a hazard of the evening. Some of the lantern designs seem to be getting more and more bizarre and although most are hilarious it sort of takes away some of the more formal aspects and the general traditional feel of the festival. It is hard to feel remotely spiritual gazing up at a bright pink Snoopy grinning insanely at you, but that is what Loy Krathong is partly about; it is a celebration and should be enjoyed. However, as the night grew older I wandered down to the water's edge and I floated my Krathong into the sea; lit the candle and pushed it into the dark water away from the beach. As it bobbed up and down on the restless waves I made my little prayer and watched it disappear from sight, so perhaps it will be my turn to have good luck for the forthcoming year. This decorative and highly spectacular festival takes place on the full moon of the twelfth Thai month of the lunar calender and Loy Krathong means floating basket but is informally known as part of the festival of light. The festival pays tribute to Phra Mae Kong Ka who is the goddess of water and to thank her for providing water during the rice growing season. Small, lotus shaped, buoyant baskets decorated with flowers, candles and money are floated down rivers or set out to sea to symbolize the drifting away of bad luck and to bring good fortune. It is said that if your candle stays alight until it goes out of sight then you will have good luck for a whole year. Loy Krathong is normally celebrated with Yi Peng and together are known as the Festival of Lights, traditionally it is Yi Peng that Khom Loy's are released into the air. These are the familiar lit lanterns that slowly float into the air and soar up into the dark night until the whole sky is illuminated by their orange glow. Traditionally the northern provinces of the country celebrate Yi Peng the most as it is a Lanna festival, but over recent times it has been common that everywhere in Thailand combines the two and join in with the celebrations. Pattaya is a perfect place to enjoy the fun either at the beach front or by one of the many fishing parks or lakes in the area. Loy Krathong is genuinely one of the parts of the year that I look forward to the most. It is unique and typically Thai in the way that it is celebrated and observed. The festival has a special feeling to it that makes you stand back and just consider your life, something that many of us simply do not have much time to do, but something everyone should do from time to time.

Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal:“a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces.”

In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function. Established in 1987 The Pattaya International Ladies Club now has a membership of over 200 women of all ages, from 34 countries, and all walks of life. With the growth of PILC has come the opportunity to offer a wide range of activities and social events such as :

The Melbourne Cup 2015 A day to remember when more than 100 “PILCies” cantered along to the Pullman Hotel to celebrate Australia's, and possibly the world’s, most famous horse race. The time difference between Thailand and The Flemington Race Course made it perfectly acceptable to kick the day off early with “bubbles” and start early we did! The glasses being a perfect accompaniment to the hats and fascinators seen in poses for many Instagram and Facebook photographs. As the race drew closer, we counted down the minutes to the horses entering the starting gates -and then –unexpected calamity! A totally overburdened internet caused the dreaded “buffering message” to come up on the screen and the race started and finished without us! Howls of outrage filled the room but were replaced with howls of jubilation when we got to see the replay and final outcome. The race was won by Michelle Payne, riding the 100-1 outsider: Prince of Penzance. What an inspirational story surrounds this determined young lady. Australia’s first ever female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup and only the fourth woman ever to take part in the race’s 155 year history. Coincidentally, Michelle rode in the colours of the suffragettes: purple, white and green. As the youngest of 10 children Michelle was raised by her father, Paddy as sadly when she was only six months old her mother died in an accident. Her brother, Stevie, who has Downs Syndrome has also become quite famous working as he does as a “Strapper” grooming, feeding generally looking after the racehorses and saddling the horses ready for the race – hence the title “Strapper”. In fact Michelle's whole family is completely horse mad with several of her siblings also having trained as jockeys. Michelle Payne: a new Australian legend! A fitting winner to a truly female event with the Melbourne Cup 2015 being another fun PILC event made possible by hardworking ladies of the committee.

St. Andrews International School Celebrates International Day

E

very year St. Andrews parents, students and teachers celebrate their cultural diversity during the annual International Day.

The day began with a kaleidoscope of colours, music and costumes during the flag and costume parade. Students then took part in a variety of International activities run by teachers and parents, such as: an International Treasure Hunt, Baking British cakes, world Theatre and New Zealand rugby tackles! At lunchtime everyone enjoyed a cultural feast of foods from all corners of the world prepared by generous and dedicated parents. The centrepiece of the event was in the afternoon when all members of the school community were treated to a cultural extravaganza which included: students and teachers performing the famous French dance the ‘Can Can’; a powerful re-enactment of the Maori Hakka and fantastic musical performances from around the world. Mr. Josh Doubleday the Head of the Primary school said, “International Day is a wonderful opportunity for the school community to acknowledge and celebrate its diversity. Throughout the day parents and teachers are reminded of the great number of commonalities and differences we have within our school and the wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding that this brings to all members of our community.“

Green Valley Panthers rock KL in U15 FOBISIA Competition. On Friday 20th November, we waved goodbye to our U15 FOBISIA team as they flew out to Kuala Lumpur to compete in this year’s round of the U15 FOBISIA games at Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar School. As always, confidence was high as St. Andrews has a strong track record at these events – both at home and away. and once again the Panthers did not disappoint. After a warm welcome and quick presentation, it was time to get straight down to business with the first part of the competition: athletics. On this hot morning, The Panthers competed strongly and received the 4th overall position with 6 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 11 bronze. As one of the smaller teams competing this was no mean feat; The Panthers once again proving that it is quality not quantity that matters. Next, it was onto the swimming competition. The Panthers had a slow start and then the placings and medals started to flow. Finishing 3rd place overall, only 9 points behind 2nd place, we collected 4 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 10 bronze medals! Day two moved the action on to the pitches and courts, with the boys in the basketball and girls on the football pitch. After only conceding one goal all day, the girls’ football team had a chance of getting gold in the final game, but with a last minute goal from the opposition, they had to settle for 3rd and the bronze trophy. The boys’ basketball team faced strong opposition all day and a combination of grit and determination saw them take 4th place overall. The third and final day saw the girls in the basketball and boys in the football competition. A strong win in the first and last games almost got the boys on the 3rd step, but they were beaten by a whisker meaning they had to settle for 4th place. All eight boys worked very hard throughout the day, and with only one substitute, performed well above expectations. Meanwhile on the court, the girls produced some fine performances and superb examples of teamwork, which got them through undefeated to become champions for the second year running. What an achievement! The MVP awards went to Wesley Pankhurst for the boys and Jade Harcourt-Harrison for the girls. It was another strong performance by the Green Valley Panthers, with winning performances against schools many times their size. As always the school is extremely proud of its athletes and they will return to campus to a heroes’ welcome.

THE RAYONG PATTAYA LADIES CIRCLE This month’s trader is all about Christmas, the New Year and Charities in Pattaya and so for this month’s Bargain Hunter I would like to shine a light on the wonderful Rayong Pattaya Ladies Circle. Why ? because this club fulfills all the previously mentioned criteria of celebrating Christmas giving to local charities and doing it all with a sense of great fun and enjoyment. After all any “coffee morning” that kicks off with Bucks Fizz/Mimosa’s round the pool at 10 a.m. is sure to be a fun event ! More importantly for this column the coffee mornings held by The Rayong Pattaya Ladies Circle most definitely fall into Bargain of the year category. Where else could you spend sometimes as long as 3-4 hours by having so much fun with so much good food and drink for a mere 200 baht ? Plus see the profits handed directly over to the monthly charity of choice ? How do they do it ? you ask., by making use of the circle’s generosity of home and hospitality. Each month a member of the circle invites the club to hold their morning at their house. In return the member can nominate their chosen charity to receive the profits from the event. Then all the ladies (only occasionally is the lesser spotted male viewed at one of these shin digs) bring a dish towards the general buffet – and believe me as one who is not too handy in the kitchen these women can cook! There are also vendors who set up their wares, usually in the gardens or outside spaces and a raffle is held with great prizes . The most recent event was of course the Christmas Coffee Morning and a truly splendid affair it was too in a beautifully decorated house by Lake Maprachan with surely the best and most festive table of goodies seen all year. Swopping stories and making new friends was carried out in beautiful surroundings making us all realise how very privileged we are to live such a comfortable ex pat life. The recipients of the proceeds of the event was "Riding for the Disabled " and to remind us of those less fortunate Khun Gio from Take Care Kids was on hand to also collect a cheque for a magnificent 75,000 baht collected from the recent Red Carpet Event. Jameson’s Irish Pub

If you are coming from Central Pattaya Road, turn north on Pattaya Klaang, Soi 12 on the northern side between Soi Bukhaow and 3rd Road. Jameson’s Pub is roughly 300 meters north, directly in front of the Nova Park. If you are coming via Pattaya 2nd Road turn east on Soi 4 carry on to the ‘T’ junction, then turn right and Jameson’s is right there. Once you’ve arrived you will notice the oversized image of a glass of Guinness and the green and gold signage adorning the establishment’s faux pub façade. Upon passing the portal you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported into a combination of a Victorian era gentleman’s club, a modern sports bar, and an upscale, yet informal eating and drinking establishment. Amongst the many amenities, there’s a sizable wooden bar, paneled walls, a library complete with comfortable leather armchairs, a sports area with widescreen TVs, a pair of pool tables, a spacious dining area, and private alcove or two in which business can be conducted and secret shared. Jameson’s serves up everything from Australian Jacob’s Creek wine to Scottish Glenlivet whiskey, Irish Guinness stout, to Thai Sangsom rum, Italian Campari liqueur, to Bacardi Breezer. These, and many other adult beverages can all be ingested to raise ones spirits, help one relax, and enhance the flavor of one’s evening meal. One of the nice things about Jameson’s is the set menu that changes weekly and from midday to midnight on Sundays a selection of ‘Sunday Roasts” are available. Also as Jameson’s Pub opens at 7 am, breakfast is served from opening until noon. A speciality being their scrambled eggs light, fluffy and always delicious. However, Jameson’s is much more than just a breakfast restaurant it’s all day menu covering a multitude of styles with the focus on high end Anglo-Irish pub grub. Starters in the form of soups, salads and snacks kick off the menu’s edible offerings. These include such things as homemade soups, a chef’s salad of the week, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, fish fingers, and potato skins.

Other favourites include Mexican Fajitas, Beef Stew, Fish and Chips, Salmon Steak, Pork Ribs, Half Shoulder of Lamb, and Spaghetti Bolognaise or Carbonara to name a few. There’s also a wide variety of sandwiches, desserts, and appetizers and 27 or so Thai dishes to choose from. Jameson’s offers hardy fare and ample portions with food prepared to a high standard and their Christmas Menu at 985 baht offers tremendous value

Football plays a big part of Christmas, and why not?

Christmas Football

Here’s a bit of a look through on some talking points and of course fixtures for the English Premier League.

Games come thick and fast at this time of the year, testing the resolve of even the biggest of squads.

Roll on Crimbo!

It always seems a little strange watching Boxing Day soccer at 20+ degrees, with the players running round in gloves! Anyone else with me on this?

Surprise Package Without question, Leicester City have become the surprise package so far this year. The dizzy heights of pole position in the richest league in the world are a far cry from the disarray that saw the club shamed in last years ill-fated visit to Thailand. Who can forget the racist events of the end of season tour, which saw three players (and the manager) sacked - The club’s main sponsor King Power certainly wont! Anyway, back to matters on the pitch…. Playing an attractive brand of football under manager Claudio Ranieri, The Tinkerman (as Chelsea would best remember him) has turned the relative new-comers into a strong outfit. So much so that at the start of December the club were on the same points as £2 Billion rated Manchester City. Maybe the EPL isn’t just for the rich boys after all?

Just who is James Vardy? Of course no small thanks to record breaking James Vardy, the player Leicester signed from non-league Fleetwood Town for a cool £1Million back in 2012 - incidentally the club were still in the Championship at the time. Kudos to that scouting network! Ruud Van Nistelrooy even took time out to send Vardy a tweet, wishing him good luck prior to going on to break the Dutchman’s consecutive scoring record - ironically against his old side. Oh how the rigid Van Gaal would love to have that kind of firepower available

The early game (7:45pm) sees Stoke entertaining Man U, will the wannabe champions fix their misfiring forward line up in time for a visit to the wet and windy Britannia Stadium? Rooney would certainly appreciate coming into some much needed form and what better time to start! Those who are haven't drunk themselves into a (near) coma will be able to witness the following top-flight footie later on that evening. No less than 7 games to choose from at 10pm kick off, as follows: • Aston Villa vs West Ham • Bournemouth vs Crystal Palace • Chelsea vs Watford • Liverpool vs Leicester • Man City vs Sunderland • Swansea vs West Brom • Tottenham vs Norwich Everton visit struggling Newcastle at 12:30am - The smart money being ploughed into the sacking of Steve McClaren (if he’s not gone already) should the Geordies not get a positive result against the Toffees. For those who haven’t made it into iBar the (obscenely) late game sees Wenger's boys pay a visit to Southampton. Just 48 hours later sees the next batch of Yuletide fixtures taking place. Five games scheduled for 10pm kick off:

SPORT & LEISURE

• Crystal Palace vs Swansea • Everton vs Stoke • Norwich vs Aston Villa • Watford vs Tottenham • West Brom vs Newcastle

Three late games make up the remaining fixtures for the Bank Holiday Monday Schedule with Arsenal hosting Bournemouth and Southampton visiting West Ham. Pick of the bunch has to go to Man U taking on Chelsea though!

Tuesday 29th sees Leicester taking on Man City - could well be the decider to see who sits top of the coveted new year table. Last but not least Liverpool visit Sunderland for Wednesdays game - Interesting to see how Klopp prepares his team for a game that Liverpool nearly always struggle in. The last batch of games over the busy festive period sees a return to regular Saturday action. Lunch time kick off (7:45pm) and Liverpool are down in East London taking on a decent West Ham side. Six games take place at the traditional 10pm start-time., here's the low-down: • Arsenal vs Newcastle • Leicester vs Bournemouth • Man U vs Swansea • Norwich vs Southampton • Sunderland vs Aston Villa • West Brom vs Stoke Late game honours goes to Watford who host Man City, for those who are still up at the unearthly hour of 2:45am. Sunday 3rd Jan sees a couple of (potentially) decent games, with Crystal Palace at home to Chelsea (8:30pm) and Everton taking on Tottenham in the Eleven o'clock kick-off. Premier League action is then put firmly on the back-burner for the introduction of this years FA Cup 3rd round ties.

Romance Never Dies! The big boys get no respite, immediately after the New Year fixtures they go into battle in the 3rd round of the now (research required by editor to actually pin down what the comp is now called) Emirates FA Cup. Of course, they will be hoping to avoid the potential banana skins of going out to lower league opposition. £67,500 awaits the victors and a place in this year’s Fourth round Budweiser Emirates FA Cup.

Where To Get Your Fix... For those who are out and about for the EPL games then are spoilt for choice in where to watch. However, it would be remiss of me not to mention a few of my favourite venues: I-Rovers on Soi LK Metro Jamesons Irish Pub, Soi Sukurdee The Players Lounge in East Pattaya Witherspoons on Soi Baukhow Of course, nothing to stop those who have CTH subscriptions staying in and watching the games - doesn’t have the same ring to it though, somehow!

Fifa Row Rumbles On On a final note, this wouldn’t be a proper footie piece if it didn’t take a moment to mention the continuation of the ugly events at footballs head table. Interestingly, Michel Platini is being singled out for a life-ban by FIFA; however, outgoing president Sepp Blatter doesn’t seem to be getting the same treatment. Recent events have taken another turn for the bad (when you thought it couldn’t get smellier) with two high-ranking FIFA officials being arrested for allegedly accepting Millions of Dollars in bribes. Shock horror - who didn’t see that one coming!

Happy Christmas and let’s all look forward to a bung free New Year. Lol

Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing in Thailand

Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing are relatively well-established sports that are based on the surface of a body of water, usually a lake but also at sea. Essentially a combination of water skiing, surfing and snowboarding, wakeboarding entails the rider being towed by a boat or jet ski along the surface of the water at a speed of around 20-25 mph whilst various stunts are performed with or without the aid of obstacles and fixed assets. Wakesurfing is similar except that stunts are performed after the towing in a velocity driven free-travel time as opposed to whilst being towed.

W

akeboarding is more commonly enjoyed because of the fact that the rider can get a longer time whilst being towed as opposed to relying in the residual velocity after giving up a towrope. As well as boats and jet skis there are a number of wakeboarding parks that are specially set up with cable and pulley drive systems, thus no boat or jet ski is required. Boards are very buoyant and are usually made of a foam or honeycomb interior covered with fiberglass or wood veneer. The shorter the board the more manoeuvres can be done but the more difficult it is to control a landing back on water. Boards typically feature fins and bindings so that the board can be controlled. Fins are usually screwed in place and can be adjusted or removed and changed with new fins. Smaller fins create less drag but give up some control also. This is what makes wakeboarding more challenging for experienced riders. Different fins can be used for different tricks. The same goes for bindings, which are usually tailored to a rider’s own comfort. There are plenty of tricks that can be done without any obstacles such as rapidly moving from outside the wake to the inside by jumping up the wake. The jump is achieved by water pressure building up as the rope is pulled. Obstacles in the path of the rider provide more experienced riders with the possibility to do plenty of mid air jumps and other tricks. The more time spent in the air the more complicated the manoeuvres can be. Competition events usually allow riders to score points based on the complexity of the jumps and other tricks performed. 180 degree and 360 degree turns, flips and grabs all compete to be the most difficult and highest scoring tricks.

The origins of Wakeboarding are little known and possibly fragmented. It was originally called skurfing in the late 1980s and there is evidence that at that time, the craze started as an offshoot of regular surfing in Australia and New Zealand. Croatia in Europe also has some history of wakeboarding. The Australian connection is validated by the need for wake surfers to have specifically made boards (skurf boards) that are shorter than regular surf boards but nonetheless require much of the knowledge of surfboard construction in order to achieve strength and durability as well as control during a ride. The term skurfing was short lived and wakeboarding and wakesurfing terms took over in a sporadic fashion, having originated in Vancouver Canada, until they were the accepted norms.

There are a number of international bodies that have been set up to oversee wakeboarding tournaments and also to set standards in the wakeboarding world. The World Wakeboard Association (WWA) was founded in 1993 and emerged as the renamed World Ski Board Association from four years earlier. The International Water ski and Wakeboarding Federation IWWF also exists and has been the definitive international Olympic partner. Of the two bodies the non-profit WWA is arguably more active in arranging and sanctioning events and it overseas a number of regional wakeboarding bodies as well as offshoots such as the women’s wakeboarding federation and under 18s competition representatives. Although many of the wakeboarding competitions are held in California and other U.S. States, Brazil, Mexico and some European nations, Thailand is one of the most popular destinations in Asia boasting a number of Wakeboarding parks in Bangkok, Chonburi, and Phuket.

The latter province has two well-regarded contenders being the International Wave Park (IWP) Phuket and the Phuket Wave Park. Phuket Wave Park features a cable drive system using 10.5 meter towers and a cable speed of 30 km/h over a 700 meter long run. Inside the obstacles include an A-frame, a transition rail, a large kicker box, a long pipe run, a fun box, a start dock, and step down obstacle and a rooftop style installation.

The International Wave Park Phuket is also a well-known destination for wakeboarders and has been active with top sponsors such as Singha beer in arranging events such as the Singha Wake Park World Series event sanctioned by the WWA. The IWP, situated near to the Blue Canyon Country Club, features a 14 metre high cable system made by Rixen Cableways and offers all inclusive packages that make use of not only the leisure facilities on the water but also dining and hotel facilities. An additional cable way known as the Little Bro provides an infinite loop and can be set for beginners to learn in the safest environment possible. In Chonburi province, between Bangkok and Pattaya, and around 20 miles north of Ban Saen is the Wake A Lot Wakeboarding Park. It is situated at Thetsaban 6 Road, Nong Tamlung, Phan Thong District, Chon Buri 20160, and is perfect for those looking for a place south of Bangkok. Wake A Lot features airport pick up and an indoor gymnasium so that you can keep fit before going on to the water. Dining and residence options are also included as well as coaching for beginners.

Further down the coast near to Rayong is the famous Shambala Wakeboarding Resort. Shambala uses water craft on a sublime lake and offers lakeside cabins so that you can enjoy time off the water as well as on it. Shambala also offers kayaking, windsurfing and kite surfing on the water as well as mountain biking so that you can explore the surrounding countryside.

Back in Bangkok the Thai Wake Park is situated at 18/4 Soi Sudsawas, Lieab Klong 6 Rd, Lumlukka, Pathum Thani, 12150 and is not far from either Suvarnabhumi or Dong Muang airports. As a safety conscious outfit they have in place a good set of safety regulations and rules as well as staff on standby to help beginners. An airport pickup service is also offered so that you can get on the water as soon after you land at the airport as possible. Thai Wake Park hosts a number of events throughout the year including charity games events and also parties featuring wakeboarding competitions combined with delicious Thai food on site. Sponsors include brand names such as RipCurl and the events are overseen and sanctioned by the Asian Wakeboard Association.

It is quite easy to take up wakeboarding in Thailand and it could well become one of the more thrilling ways to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors.

Golf in Pattaya. What is golf in Pattaya? Well it’s many different things to many different people. To some it’s an obsession, a passion and a way of life but to others it’s a way of whiling away the daylight hours until the real fun starts in darkness. To those of us in between these extremes it’s a social event, a time to be with your mates and laugh with them.

The Germans, being German have a word that accurately describes golf in Pattaya for me recently and that’s schadenfreude, which basically means pleasure obtained from another’s suffering. We played Pattavia this week. The sign in the foyer ominously said the greens were running at an express pace of 9.5. What the sign didn’t say was that this measurement was taken uphill and into the grain. So after harrowing experiences on the first three or four greens I finally worked out, never go past the flag. I’ve come up short with my approach to the 6th and walked up to my ball. My mood darkened when the first thing I noticed was the putter was out of the question. I would HAVE to chip, always my last option. The muscles in my forearms were already beginning to seize up. Out came the Ha Sip Hock (why oh why) and I forced myself over it. Back came the club in a choking sort of stuttering motion and it fell on the ball which went whizzing past the pin leaving me a scorchingly fast, downhill, very nasty five foot putt. I tried to look calm and refrained from snapping the wedge in two. My turn to putt and I wondered if anyone would notice if I left the cover on. Over it I stood, the putter felt like a spitting Cobra in my hands which I was trying to strangle to death. I took it back surprisingly smoothly and gently tipped the ball ever so slightly. Away it rolled, just slowly to begin with and my hopes soared. It started to gather pace and by the time it reached the hole it was fizzing. I resigned myself to the 8 footer coming back, without watching. I looked up expecting sympathy but what I was greeted with were contented little smiles breaking across faces. The word schadenfreude screamed in my mind as we burst out laughing. Anyone that plays golf in Pattaya has suffered this ignominy. The PR people have stuck me with Aussie Bob, for golf tips. Well most of you can guess who Aussie Bob is and obviously his country of origin. So, I rang him for his input, his tip of the month. I will leave the expletives out but needless to say many words ended in “ing” and “ers”. Aussie Bob being Australian has very little interest in the written word. His words to me, his tip of the month as it were, is:-

“Just tell the “expletive deleted (golfers)” to turn and hit the “expletive deleted (ball)”, go find it and turn and hit the thing again. Don’t worry about all that BS golf coaches sell you. Just a good turn is a good start to a golf swing, clear your mind of any other crap. Happy Golfing

Hi Folks, I have been fishing the reef Hin Pra Nang 2 kilometers south of Koh Krok for some years. I have had some great catches but all have been on a falling tide. Anchoring on the south and south west end on a rising tide produced nothing. The reef fish had to be somewhere, so I finally tried the south west side of the reef. I thought this might work out as when searching for live bait this area was thick with small silver fish. I knew I had to be ready, got my pre-tied rigs and spare hooks and the bait all cut up. As when the bite arrives it’s fast and furious and will disappear just as quick. Sure enough, ten minutes after anchoring in eleven metres the first russel snapper came up. Fourteen drops got nine fish and three missed bites, and then I got snagged. Up came the rig, just the weight was missing, a quick tie on and when I got the rig back down, nothing. The bite was over, the shoal had moved on. It is that fast. After that the usual reef fish started biting but an hour all went quiet. I guessed the fish had moved into deeper water. The highest point of the reef is three metres below the surface, and there are plateaus at seven, eleven and thirteen metres before dropping off to sixteen plus metres. With the rising tide and the wind from the north I thought that letting out some more anchor rope the two forces would push me eastward and into thirteen metres. This done the bite resumed and this time I was knocking out candy striped fish (I do not their right name). These fish have sharp gill plates and spines that have a toxin that is unpleasant, not a day ender though. As a matter of course I had put out two big rigs with live bait, no takes or bites but you have to try! To catch live fish for bait I have been using 8lb fluorocarbon line and 7 small S/S hooks each on 2 inches of 8lb fluorocarbon. Jigging with no bait I get a lot of bait and surprisingly a lot of decent sized bottom fish. So now I use this rig as my bottom gear but I only bait the bottom 2 or 3 hooks. I used to use 7 or 8 inches of 12lb line as it stiff enough to keep the hook away from the main line but the short length of 8lb works well. I was getting the boat ready to take my fishing buddy Frank out and the weather turned real nasty. I tried to call him to cancel but no answer, just as well. One hour later things had calmed down and we were trolling the south end of Koh Krok getting a lot of small queen fish. Late in the day Frank suggested that if we got close to the rocks we had a chance of a dusky jack. It’s real tricky getting to within three to four metres of the rocks and watching out for the coral reef that extends out. I will not go so close when the wind, current and waves all heading towards the rocks. However that’s where the dusky jacks frequent, just one spot on the south end and one on the north end when they are here, which is not often. Sure enough we nearly had a double on the first pass; Frank lost his as it dived into the rocks. Dusky jacks are ambush predators; they wait in amongst the corals waiting for a meal to swim by. We never catch them away from those certain two coral spots. A heavy fighting fish that is at home in the rocks means that once hooked it’s not a given that you will see the fish let alone land it. Quite often I have to move the boat over a rock that the fish has swam into and winkle him out. In the last five trips to Koh Man Wichia I have not lost a big fish, any fish I hooked, I landed. I should have been a politician, as in the last five trips I have not had a single bite! That’s fishing for you. The usual, if you want any info on your nearest tackle shop, want to share info on what you are catching / photo’s of your fish of the day. It’s plamafia5@aol.com or text me on 0808356945. Have Fun! ‘World Championship’

motorsport action arrives in Thailand for the first time

s l e e h W g n i k l Ta

It’s barely a year since Chang International Circuit (CIC) opened for business in Buriram to great fanfare – and immediately changed the face of motorsport in Thailand. Designed to the FIA’s ‘Grade 1’ standard, basically the best you can get to, that effectively means F1 can just turn up and race. It’s ushered in a new chapter for race circuits in Thailand. Our own beloved Bira Circuit feels a bit small and creaky now and many Pattaya race fans have knuckled down and started making the long trip up to the North East to see the top level motorsports that have come in the wake of CIC’s opening for business. Many of them also made the trip recently as the FIA World Touring Car Championship enjoyed it’s first ever visit to Thailand. In fact it was the first ever FIA sanctioned ‘World Championship’ event here, a statistic that was long overdue to be corrected. For the ambitious owners of the Buriram circuit attracting an FIA ‘World Championship’ event was always going to be a major target. But there are actually only five that hold that moniker, two, the World Rally Championship and World Rallycross Championship, certainly aren’t a ‘fit’ with an asphalt racetrack so that leaves three – Formula 1, World Endurance and World Touring Cars. The former two are currently out of financial reach so that leaves the close fought ‘touring cars’ as the only practical option and, rather handily, they were also looking for a new regional stopping off point after ending their longstanding relationship with Macau. With the input of the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Sport Authority of Thailand and other bodies the ambitious project became a reality and started to unfold. The tangible reality finally hit when the 40-ft containers of the World

MOTOR TRADER Touring Car Championship teams’ arrived in Thailand, were transported up to Buriram, lined up and then unloaded on the vast paddock apron. There are four global brands racing in the series: Citroën, Honda, Lada and Chevrolet while the big stars include former Italian F1 driver Gabriele Tarquini and nine times FIA World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb who has in recent years swapped the rally stages for the clean smooth asphalt of the race tracks. The weekend though was all about one driver, Argentinian star José María López. He arrived in Buriram as the reigning champion and with a firm grip on this year’s points’ classification. He banged in a win in the first race, his ninth victory of the season, and followed that up with another battling drive to the podium in the second race after the top end of the grid was reversed and the Citroën driver thus left Thailand with his second WTCC championship title. “It’s been an amazing year for me but really hard,” he said in the post race press conference. “The competition has been harder, my teammates have worked harder and never gave up. To win the championship three races before the end is a massive result looking at the competition and the level. We were really equal in some races and I am looking forward to it continuing like this.” For Thailand the arrival of the first FIA sanctioned ‘World Championship’ was a win-win for everyone, as CIC Project Director Tanaisiri Chanvittayarom was quick to say. “This is the first FIA World Championship event for Chang International Circuit,” he noted. “It’s a big honour for us, we’ve been trusted and chose to be one of the championship rounds and it’s exciting because all the teams, the drivers and the organisers are a big group of professionals so we also learn a lot from this race in terms of setup and organization bodies.” It’s really an event that has taken CIC up to another level, and in their first year they have climbed quite a few notches already. The crowds also arrived. Despite limited promotion the main grandstand filled right up on race day, that’s 10,000 bums on seats, and they all saw very close fought action over the two races, which eventually ran well on into the twilight. When the engines finally died away and darkness fully enveloped the track a big milestone had been broken – pukka FIA ‘world championship’ action had taken place on Thai soil. Things will never be the same.

M

azda has pulled the wraps of its new CX-3 compact crossover in Thailand during a major presentation at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok and it has high hopes that the new model, the fourth to feature its well received Skyactiv technology, can replicate the success it has enjoyed over the last couple of years from the debuts of the first three Skyactiv models to arrive here, the new Mazda2, Mazda3 and CX-5. In fact thanks to this trio of distinctively styled models and a positive reception to its new generation of Skyactiv technology from Thai consumers, Mazda has been steadily growing its market share in Thailand and taking sales away from bigger and more established rivals. Design and technology have been at the heart of Mazda’s approach and that’s very clear on the new CX-3. It clearly follows the ‘Kodo’ design philosophy and its styling follows the ideas rolled out on the Mazda2 and Mazda3. Under the bonnet there is a 1500cc clean diesel, which offers a very 23.3 km/l, and an efficient 2000c petrol unit with 156 hp and 16.4-km/l fuel economy; both are hooked up to a 6-speed transmission. Those options should see it more than capable of taking on its main rival in B-SUV, Honda’s HR-V. Mazda promises ground breaking safety features for the CX-3’s class thanks to its i-Activsense system which includes Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, High Beam Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Smart City Brake Support. Inside, the cabin is a clear plus point and certainly the range toppers on show at the launch were impressive. The trims feel of a high quality, well put together and the styling clearly mimics more luxurious Italian cars. There is both broader and minute detail thinking drawn from prestige brands such as Alfa Romeo and Ferrari and it works well. In fact the new CX-3 places Mazda into a new segment, ‘subcompact crossover’ (B-SUV), which it’s never occupied before. It’s a rapidly growing segment of the market here too, albeit one that’s starting from

58 58

PATTAYA TRADER

MOTOR & MARINE

a small base. However from a 2% market share in 2014 ‘compact crossover’ is expected to double to 4% this year and continue to grow as other brands add new models. The CX-3 is well positioned to tap into this growth reckoned Hidesuke Takesue, President of Mazda Sales Thailand – and he’s think decent sales numbers. “We expect it to rapidly gain popularity with annual sales of over 6,000 units,” he says. This year’s target is to achieve orders of 1,000 units before the full target of 6,000 units is reached in 2016.

Mazda unashamedly terms the CX-3 as an urban lifestyle crossover and during the presentation didn't give any mention to rougher terrain capability, rather emphasizing this off road use with its bigger CX-5. Its primary demographic target will be YUCCIES (Young Urban Creatives) in Bangkok, here in Pattaya and other major urban areas. Meanwhile, in Pattaya where flash flooding is a regular occurrence and road surfaces are often poor a raised ride height even for on road urban driving scenarios is a very useful selling point. For 2016 excise duties will change to a C02 based format, which follows the EU direction, and that is introducing a big unknown into the market. With prices thus expected to rise in 2016 the CX-3 could enjoy a surge in late year orders, especially at next month’s Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok, a key annual selling point, with orders taken before 31 December but delivered next year still liable to this year’s excise duties. For the Thai showrooms the CX-3 will come with a 156hp/204Nm 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G gasoline engine and a 105 hp/270Nm 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D diesel, the latter tapping straight into a fast growing demand for smaller more efficient diesels in a market were diesel prices are capped lower than gasoline. Pricing for the new CX-3 range from 835,000 to 1,045,000 baht for the petrol version (which comes in three trim levels) and 1,155,000 baht for the single-specification diesel. That means the CX-3’s entry-level petrol version starts below Honda’s HR-V with a very similar price for range topper while it doesn’t have a comparable diesel rival.

Do you want to settle in Thailand?

I get many enquiries from new arrivals to Thailand who have decided to pull up roots in their native country and settle here. Most have given a lot of thought to the idea and made a decision over a few if not many previous visits. I myself first came here in 1984 and never thought then I would finish up living here. I did not make the move permanent until 1995, partly because of an aged parent and partly because it took me that time to put my UK affairs in order (sell the house, sell the car and sort out pensions and other family affairs).

Do I regret the move? Not for one second. OK in Thailand there is an adjustment required to the “May pen rai mindset especially if you employ someone to work in your condo or house. The driving is scary and after one near fatal accident I now get someone else to do it for me. Mind you that can be scary too. Today I consider myself the luckiest person in the world to live in this beautiful Kingdom. I make annual visits to my homeland but increasingly I have divorced myself from the West especially when I stop in London and get a taxi to a good restaurant. When I look at the cost I could live here for a month on one night out there. I will always love my home country and be grateful for the benefits I received from being born and educated in the first world.

I worked for a decade with the British insurer Legal & General selling insurance and investments. That background was of great assistance to me as I knew how to arrange my financial affairs when I decided to move here for good. I sometimes forget that many potential expatriates do not have that expertise and get very technical when writing these articles. While there is no substitute for a face to face meeting there are some general rules the expat should follow. Besides living contentedly here you must arrange it that any savings and investments are tax free and outside the reach of the greedy taxmen in your home country. For most Britons selling their home there will be no Capital Gains liability if it has been your primary residence. If you have been living the expat life and have your UK property rented there is a liability but this can be mitigated. Check with any financial adviser. I would try and avoid taking advice from the big offshore banks. They are usually tied to a few specific providers and give you limited choice as to what securities you can purchase. Even offshore banks who promise to send a consultant to your new home will do what? This year he may be working for an international bank and contact you twice when he has a new product to sell. Try and appoint an adviser who lived in this country and who is properly qualified and just as important has a stake in this country and who is not likely to disappear overnight. You are in a position also as an expat not to be limited in the amount of tax free investment and tax free return. Living in the UK you will be used to ISA’s and their forerunner PEP’s which gave you limited tax free investment annually. My journey came totally unexpectedly and out of personal misfortune. Recovering from a serious illness I found that living in a tropical climate was ideal for my condition and bit by bit my migration became permanent. Every Expat has a story and most are involved and complicated, you never quite meet the ordinary Joe thousands of miles from home and stories differ from heartbreak to business ventures and even plain mistakes. My journey has finally taken me to live on the Gulf of Thailand and my home has been Pattaya City for the last five years. The initial Thai language course was my first foray into trying to understand my new countrymen and to be honest it was a bit of a disaster. Languages were never my forte but at least European languages have a Latin derivative you can normally work things out from. But trying to learn to speak Thai for a Ferang is like learning to speak for the first time.

and eat, whether it be as a family unit or just a group of friends they take the opportunity to chat about their day over a bowl of noodles or some soup. Understanding the simple ritual of daily life such as meal times can open the door to understanding of a culture that is difficult for a westerner to comprehend. My formal Thai classes were not nearly so educational as my dinner times natterings in crowded restaurants, and although some of the phrases and words are slang I found myself slowly being understood. That is not to say because I can speak Taxi Cab Thai I can fully understand this alien and exotic culture, because I definitely do not. After five years of trying to ingratiate myself and to blend into society as a local, I still feel as far away from my goal as ever. Sometimes I just give up, put some decent Soul music on my iPod and drift back to different days. Then an hour later some bizarre and unrelated event will remind me of why this place is so wonderful and to spur my understanding to greater levels.

So how can you possibly understand a new culture if you cannot understand what is being said? Relying on the hope that the other person can speak English seems to be most Expat's policy and that is the underlying problem for all Ferangs. I had to go in search of another way to understand my hosts and it came to me that something more simple should be looked at. UK does not really have a food culture but I soon became aware that food is a uniting factor for all Thais and something you can understand. What to eat, when to eat and most importantly how to eat can give you an insight as to how the Thai people think. Thais take time out to sit down together

Christmas in Pattaya

C

hristmas is not a good time of year for the pig population of Thailand. Every bar worthy of the name puts on a party, the centerpiece of which is most often a very unhappy pig roasting over a spit. The punters are out in force; their numbers only matched by the mass of coloured balloons tied to everything resembling a fixture. And the girls? The Bar Hostesses may not fully understand the significance of Christmas in its traditional sense, but that doesn’t dampen their enthusiasm. Red ‘Santa’ caps and short red skirts are the fashion of the moment and ‘Melly Kit Mart’ replaces their usual greeting of ‘Hello Sexy Man’. ’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the sois, All the creatures were stirring, including katoeys; The piglets were hung o’er the spits with care, In hopes that the punters soon would be there; The Ladies were resplendent, all dressed in red, While visions of sugar-daddies danced through their head ... (My apologies to Clement Clarke Moore for that desecration of his splendid poem.) By midnight, the explosion of popping balloons means the long night has reached its peak. Last year I was sitting at a beer bar talking with a long-time friend, Nok, having a great time drinking and playing games, but that all came to an abrupt end when one of her ‘customers’ turned up on his motorbike. She rushed out to greet him then quickly returned to the mamasan with the cash for her bar fine. As she retrieved her handbag she gave me a smile and a conciliatory, “Sorry, I have to go,” knowing full well I would understand. Sitting unattended, I could only watch as she slipped out into the night. ... She sprang on his bike, to her friends gave a whistle, And away they both flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ’ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.” The good thing about Christmas Day in Thailand is all the shops are open, affording the opportunity to make some post-last-minute purchases. During the previous week the department stores are crowded with conscientious farang doing their Christmas shopping, so I prefer to shop after the event to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the many heavily-discounted bargains available. This year I only have to buy one thoughtful gift for a long-suffering tee ruk. I have already assured her that I’ve learned my lesson from last year when my gift of a 1,000 baht phonecard was received less enthusiastically than expected. I tried to explain it was a practical gift, something she could utilize every day but, apparently, it was not ‘lo-man-tic’ enough. I was given the impression the only thing less appreciated would have been if I’d paid her parking fines. This year I have to come up with something romantic, big, wrappable and expensive-looking. In the past, before wrapping any non-convertible gift, I would spend a little time removing the price tag so the recipient would not know how much I paid (or didn’t pay). In Pattaya however, the female recipients of my rare gifts

often survey the item as if looking for the price tag. And when they don’t find one, they come straight out and ask me how much it cost. To Westerners this behaviour is rude, but to Thais it is perfectly acceptable. I’m used to it now and have devised a cunning plan. I have a set of my own blank price tags and can set my printer to print out any amount I want on the small labels. Say I purchase a gift for 300 baht, I remove that tag and replace it with one reading 1,300 baht before wrapping the item. When she receives it and checks the price, the lady merely thinks I was stupid for paying too much rather than being the Cheap Charlie that I am. Of course, once the Christmas cheer dies down, New Year’s Eve arrives, proving once again that time flies when you’re having fun. I usually take a moment to ponder the year that has been; the experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met and my personal life, in order to gauge success or otherwise. Considering our current world is being run by lunatics, I am happy to be here in fantasyland watching, at a safe distance, the machinations of the world’s braindead political masters behaving as if they were a pile of dung beetles fighting over a morsel of dung. Fortunately, I am still in reasonable health. Unfortunately, my finances are not so healthy. If it really is ‘easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven’, then I have a BIG chance of making it through those Pearly Gates one day. At least, if I am excluded, the reason won’t be for failing some heavenly means test. But I tend to think and analyse too much. Perhaps the best way to enjoy life is either by being as dumb as a doorknob or the wisest of the street-wise. I’ve met some guys who are so stupid it is a wonder they ever survived to adulthood. They are so gullible they believe everything they see, hear and read. And you know what? They have a wonderful time. They enter a bar, meet a girl who professes her deep and undying love for them, give her a wad of money to help with her family’s ‘problem’ and leave happy, believing the girl really did fall in love with them after only five minutes. They sleep like babies. I’ve met other guys who are so clever they outcon the con artists, out-lie the liars and out-smart the smarties. They get the better of anyone who tries to get the better of them and, they too, have a great time. They will go into a bar, meet a girl, profess undying love for her and promise her the world. Once she thinks they are the greatest thing since McDonalds introduced McSomDtum to the menu, they take her for a (free) ride. They too, sleep like babies. Then, there are the rest of us – the walking mediocrity. Stuck between the optimist and the pessimist, we know too much to be truly happy in fantasyland but too little to survive in a pool of sharks. We are the ones with a B-minus average in the classroom of life. The fool sees everything as white. The wise man sees everything as black. All we see is grey. We know better than to believe everything we see or hear and we won’t accept everything at face value. We don’t know enough to reject everything we see and hear and are perpetually wondering whether, this time, it may actually be true. This time it really may be the ‘best price’ or maybe this time she really does love me. We are stuck in a world of uncertainty. And we don’t sleep. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
