oel, Noel, tis the the season of good cheer and everything magical. Calvin Coolidge once said, “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” What he meant by this of course was that Christmas is carried within all of us, wherever you are or whatever you are doing. Does it necessarily mean that because it is December the 25th that it is Christmas Day? The simple answer to that is emphatically no. Around the world 130 countries celebrate Christmas and yet not all of them on the same date, so if you are a devotee of Christmas and have time on your hands you could almost make a profession of celebrating it. In Russia and the Ukraine, Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old Julian calendar for religious celebration days. Ethiopia also follows the Julian calendar, so they too celebrate on

the 7th of January and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s celebration of Christ’s birth is called Ganna. Twelve days after Ganna Ethiopians begin a three-day festival called Timkat, which commemorates the baptism of Christ. Not only can the date of Christmas change but also the name of Santa Claus or Father Christmas as you prefer. Also where he is supposed to have come from and the traditions associated with celebrating this character. For instance in Holland, Santa Claus is called Sinterklaas, he doesn’t live at the North Pole but rather bizarrely in sunny Spain and arrives to the children by steamboat with a helper called Black Peter. In Italy, a good witch called La Befana flies around on her broomstick on January the 6th and delivers presents to the children. That is unless you have been naughty, then the bad boys and girls can expect nothing more than a smelly lump of coal.

COVER STORY
The Christmas dinner of Roast Turkey is not necessarily a tradition in all countries, The good people of Greenland sit down to a lovely feast of Kiviak a decomposed bird that has been wrapped in sealskin and buried under a stone for several months. The Japanese do not really celebrate the festival and it is not a national holiday but they will actually queue up for a bucket of deep fried chicken from KFC. Kurisumasu ni wa kentakki or Kentucky for Christmas was a marketing idea from the 70’s that has actually become a tradition - only in Japan !
In total contrast to the rather staid Japanese fare, be prepared if you are offered Smalahove in Norway. This is a whole steamed sheep’s head and not a dish for the faint-hearted. Tradition says the ears are gobbled down first together with the eyes as these are the delicacies. Whilst munching away contentedly on a nice pupil or two, the animal’s brain is spooned out and either boiled or sauteed. I am not certain what wine should be served with this dinner but would hope that it is something that is highly fortified. Christmas dinner in the Philippines follows the hispanic heritage known as Noche Buena. It does not take place on the actual day but around midnight after the late evening mass. A cured leg of pork is served with a ball of edam cheese which is called quest de bola. Then in Poland where the festive dinner also takes place on Christmas Eve, it is a vegetarian affair which is normally composed of 10 / 12 dishes including: cuffed carp, fried carp, herring in wine sauce, herring in a cream sauce, vegetable salad, beetroot, mushroom or fish soup, sauerkraut and makowiec. Therefore the look of Christmas dinner can be very different depending on where in the world you are located, and almost every country has a few dishes that are considered musts on the holiday table. But what would Christmas be without a beverage or two to accompany the abundance of food. It is clear that the drinks are often just as important as the food when it comes to celebrating properly. A very popular drink among the cold European nations is Mulled Wine, normally based on red wine, with slightly different spices being used. Eggnog is also a world favourite; rich with cream, eggs, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and a good glug of rum and loved by grandmothers. An old traditional English drink is Wassail, it is a type of spiced cider and served for centuries. It is a good alternative to mulled wine, especially if you have a slightly sweeter palate. Cola de mono is the tipple served in Chile at Christmas time. Made with a little eggnog, milk, coffee and literally almost any type of alcohol. Cola de Mono means Monkey’s Tail ! However perhaps the most famous choice for great aunts and aged female relations is the Snowball. It is a sort of fizzy eggnog livened up with lemonade and as a child I remember sipping this thick, sweet concoction from my mother’s glass, suffice to say I did not return for seconds. Wherever you happen to be over the Christmas period searching around for Roast Turkey with all the trimmings.or embracing the traditions and customs of the locals. The most important thing is to make the most of the day and if you know of someone who may be alone during the holiday spare them some time to make them feel less alone.and wherever you may be on the day, enjoy it !
Happy Christmas to everyone from all at The Pattaya Trader www.pattayatrader.com

Hi Readers Well did anyone have a good 2016? Please feel free to prove me wrong and write to me at pattayatrader@pattayatrader.com if you did because everyone I speak to can’t wait to see the end of the year and look forward with greater hope and optimism to 2017. Comments ranging from “challenging” to “downright dreadful” seem to be how most of Pattaya is regarding the past 12 months, so with a sense of optimism tempered with nervous apprehension - mainly due to the uncertainty of the “Trump factor” - we look forward to a better New Year for you and yours. Hoping your Christmas festivities were enjoyable and New Year’s Eve celebrations memorable. Have a very Happy New Year ! Editor

The ASEAN Education Center in Pattaya is located at the Drop-in Center of the Human Help Network Foundation Thailand. Representatives and members of the Thailand based and foreign Rotary Clubs attended a soft opening as their donations and support had made this a possibility . There was a tour of the facilities and a viewing of the Isuzu passenger truck which will be transporting the children from migrant workers sites to the center.

In 1905 Paul Harris initiated a meeting
of 4 business people: the birth of ROTARY. Today there are 1.2 M members in 33 000 clubs in nearly every country in the world. The first ROTARY project was a public toilet. Today ROTARY has the following “Areas of Focus”: - Promoting peace - Fighting disease - Providing clean water - Saving mothers and children - Supporting education - Growing local economies Nearly all of you will remember when they were immunised against Polio but not many people know that this was a joint effort by WHO (World Health Organisation), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and ROTARY. Today polio has been extinguished worldwide with only the exception of several hundred cases compared to hundreds of thousands 40 years ago. ROTARY is a “fellowship doing communal services”. The clubs are the heart of Rotary. At weekly meetings, members catch up with friends, hear what’s happening in their communities, share plans and exchange ideas for creating lasting change. The ROTARY Club Phoenix Pattaya is the only German speaking ROTARY club in Asia. We support: Dr. Philippe Seur (HIV and AIDS treatment) CPDC Huay Yai (Child Protection) Pattaya Orphanage Hand-to-Hand Foundation and many more Basically we give in-kind donations: we ask the projects what they need and pay the bills. The money comes from members, friends, individuals, foreign donors or companies. All donations for projects reach the people in need 100% Rotarians pay for their expenses, we don't deduct administrative costs from donations. Rotarians are part of a global network and can take part in any club meeting worldwide. You need a dentist in New York, a lawyer in Nairobi, high school in Sydney? A Rotarian can always contact a local ROTARY club and get advice. So when traveling abroad a Rotarian can always contact a local club and will get a deeper insider view than a tourist on a sightseeing tour – you always are a “fellow Rotarian”. Our members are CEOs, lawyers, real estate agents, retired army officers, photographers, stewardesses, teachers, etc. We share our life and professional experiences with fellow Rotarians, our members or members of other ROTARY clubs lecture about their profession or hobbies. Our motto for the last years has been”Body and Soul”, we have had lectures on meditation, nutrition, Qigong training (with a master from Hong Kong) and also on topics such as Einstein, the American political system, history of photography and why do cables wind-up? Recent guest speakers include the ambassador of Germany to Thailand and the boss of Lufthansa Asia. National Teachers Day January 16th 2017
B
eing tasked with writing about this auspicious day, I must admit that I was unaware that it actually existed. However, as somebody who has a teaching certificate and knows what it is to teach English in Thailand, I was keen to delve deeper into the matter.Wan Kru or Teacher’s Day is celebrated every year on January the 16th in Thailand, and as part of the celebration it is also a school holiday. The day in essence is a day of remembrance, when teachers gather together to remember their teachers. Wan Kru loosely translated means Hard Day but in this context it actually means hard-working career. Although the celebration is fairly recent, with the very first being held in 1957, it has continued to be held nationwide ever since. The events on the day include a ceremony of paying respect to the teacher by chanting a Pali prayer, which in turn offers up strength and unity amongst the teaching fraternity. There is of course religious connotations to the day, such as offering food to monks and pouring water as a sign of dedication of merit to the old teachers. Confucius once said, “A true teacher is one who, keeping the past alive, is also able to understand the present.” And this is perfectly true of the good mentors out there, who toil daily to give the children the tools they need to survive life. That is why in Thailand, children are taught by their parents to respect their teachers and to understand how important their teachings are. On the day, all students come to school with flowers and prostrate at their teacher’s feet to give thanks and respect. The flowers hold great symbolism, the bouquets given to the teachers have three specific flowers in them: one for wit, one for respect, and the other for perseverance. In performing the ritual, the students are thanking the teachers for having been taught well in the past, while hoping to gain merit, and good luck for the future. So the day serves two real purposes, it offers the opportunity for the teachers to remember their old past tutors, and also for present day students to pass their respects onto their current instructors and ask for their blessings for their future good luck in learning.impressions last a lifetime, and the lessons learned will be passed down to others, almost like inheritances of wisdom. So it is fitting that on January the 16th, teachers have a special day where we can all celebrate one of the noblest and most selfless callings of all.

S
aturday, January the 9th heralds National Children’s Day in Thailand, and this year Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has created the slogan, “Knowledge and virtue together will move us into the future”. Commonly known as Wan Dek which means Day Children, the day was introduced with the premise that all parents must set a good example for their young sons and daughters, and in return the children should show gratitude to their parents. As with all Thai celebrations on such matters, Sanuk will play a great part in the day. Most explanations of Sanuk are simply to have fun, but there is a little more to it than that. Sanuk is trying to achieve whatever you are doing in life, and whilst doing so injecting pleasure and fun into the equation. Thai Children are no less materialistic than kids from anywhere else in the world, and when a Bangkok survey asked what they wanted for Children’s Day the predictable responses of toys, smart-phones and computers etc were high on the responses. However many Thai youngsters also said that they wanted happiness, love from their parents and peace and unity in Thailand. The children were also asked by the survey, “How should your parents show a good example to you?” and apparently over 90% of the kids answered by saying their parents should show loyalty to the monarchy.
Here in Pattaya in the past, tents have been set up along Pattaya North Road in front of City Hall, where most of the fun is centered. Two years ago Pattaya Park had a free admission policy for children, and also in the past kids could watch helicopter landings at U-tapao Airport.Prior to the actual Saturday, most schools in Pattaya will have their own celebrations either on the Thursday or Friday. The events organised differ wildly depending on the imagination of the planners, but they all include group activities with the focus on fun and togetherness. Children’s Day in Thailand is just as much a celebration from the adult community of the nation to say to their kids how much the country values them rather than simply an excuse to lavish expensive gifts on their offspring. As a big kid myself, I am looking forward to the day immensely. I just hope that my stamina can compete with the youngsters, who I know will be as effervescent as a bottle of shaken Cola.
Children’s Day since its foundation in 1955, is now firmly established in Thailand’s event calendar and is a celebration of the Children of Thailand as an asset to the kingdom and the realisation that they are also the future.During the day, kids do not have to pay for train or bus transport, plus many attractions and amenities are either reduced or free for entry. The entire day is about having fun with activities, getting out and about and most importantly about children and families interacting with each other.

CONGRATULATIONS TO INDIAN BY NATURE !
Indian By Nature is used to high praise but 2016 proved to be a great year for the restaurant when it was granted the Traveler’s Choice Award 2016 recognizing the top 10 restaurants across Thailand and also placed amongst the Top 25 fine dining restaurants in Asia. Therefore as a reward for all his valiant work throughout the year eating spiders, snakes and the dreaded Balut - all for the sake of a good story - we sent our restaurant critic Terrence Collins along to see what all the fuss was about ! ow lucky are we in Pattaya to have such a fine restaurant as Indian by Nature right on our doorstep. Out of curiosity I checked the customer reviews on Tripadvisor and found the comments to be extremely positive and complimentary. Most residents in Pattaya will know the location on Thappraya road, next to Frasers with ample parking off the main road. Upon entering through a set of impressive Indian doors we were greeted with a feast for the eyes, flamboyantly coloured lights adorned the ceiling, whilst a bright and cheery room with fine furnishings created a serene colonial atmosphere. We were promptly welcomed by the charming general manager Mr Satish and seated in a corner booth table with a pleasant view of the restaurant. I am a big fan of Indian food but my preferences lie with lamb dishes whereas the wife prefers seafood, so we asked Mr Satish to suggest his favourites from the menu and just sat back, relaxed and ordered a gin & tonic each. To our pleasant surprise a Gin

Trolley appeared with dolly in tow. From the unusual selection we opted for the Copperhead Gin, plus we were offered freshly ground botanicals and spices to be added and opted for the star anise, which certainly gave the drink a lovely perfumed fragrance. Our starters arrived on queue, tandoori rack of lamb for me, a chicken tikka salad to share and tandoori king prawns for the wife and I must say all the dishes were simply outstanding. The lamb chops were extremely good quality, French dressed and full of flavour with great caramelisation on the bones. The king prawns were plump and juicy, a real winner with the wife, plus the chicken tikka salad was a very generous portion finished with pomegranate arils and flaked almonds, a meal in itself. We asked for some breathing space before the main course as we were pretty full already, ordered a few more G&T’s, then sat back and relaxed as we watched the other clients’ orders come out. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night

but then I suppose after 13 years in business, serving food of this high quality and with numerous awards from Tatler, Chaine de Rotisseurs and now Tripadvisor it’s no wonder they have built up a regular clientele. I would therefore advise booking to avoid disappointment, although walk in diners are welcome of course. Apparently 90% of their regular clientele are British, so you’ll have no problem finding the national dish of Chicken Tikka Marsala on the top of their menu. Thankfully the gin & tonics worked their magic and we were once again hungry for the main course. I ordered imported Australian lamb Rogan Josh, Tandoori fish for the wife, plus nan breads and Chicken Biryani and a Dal flambé cooked “”table side”” making great theatre to the wife’s delight. Once again the food was flawless and certainly the best quality lamb I have ever had in a curry anywhere in the world.Due to the portion sizes being so generous, we opted for a doggy bag, so we could save room for desserts. Indian desserts have always been a great favourite with my family, especially my late father and my young son - when ordering a take away back in the UK, desserts were always top of the list. So when once again another trolley appeared, this time showcasing the desserts on offer, we decided to share a rice “Kheer” pudding and a “Gajar Halwa”’which is a delightful carrot cake served with vanilla ice cream. The perfect finish to the perfect meal. Mr Satish also presented us with an after dinner trolley highlighting cognacs, digestives and Irish coffees, but we politely declined as we felt we had already over indulged ourselves. Then left the restaurant feeling content that we had been very warmly welcomed and served almost as if we were VIP guests or family. We are excited to return with a party friends as soon as possible so that we can try and share more items from the menu. Apart from the delicious food and elegant décor, Mr Satish and his staff are no doubt a big part of this restaurant’s success as their attention to detail, welcoming manner and service is what makes this restaurant really stand out for me. The restaurant opens from 5.30pm til late, 7 days a week and for those adventurous enough to try cooking Indian food at home there’s even a cookbook available which highlights some of the dishes available on the menu. It is written by the North Indian Punjabi owner Mrs Av Khanigou who is co-owner of the restaurant with her son Karan. So if you’re craving a good curry, you don’t have to travel far. Be sure to pop in to “”Indian by Nature”” and see why Tripadvisor members voted for them in the Top 10 best restaurants in Thailand and Top 25 in Asia .

New Year EPL & Turkey’s
By Glenn Cowan
W
e approach the halfway mark in what can only be described as another strange season in the life of the English Premier League, with the Christmas & New Year fixtures almost upon us.Games come thick and fast over the festive season, with supporters and armchair fans getting a near overdose of footie action.Of course, one of the key benefits to being over in Thailand is the opportunity to watch pretty much any game you wish. Makes following your own team even easier when you can kick back in one of the great sports bars and take in a game or two!
Setting the Pace
It would seem that Chelsea have refound their rhythm, under new coach Antonio Conte. The combustible Italian has successfully managed to pick up from a very poor performance last term and allow the West Londoners to be “there or thereabouts” at the halfway point. Sadly, last season's’ winners Leicester City are in real danger of doing a “Chesney Hawkes” as they struggle to get to grips with the 2016-17 campaign. That said they are still tearing up trees, having finished top of their Champions League group - not bad for a maiden voyage in top European footie! Man City are in the mix at the run in too. Pep Guardiola has seen issues first hand, but it would seem that they are well placed to perform strongly in the 2nd half of the season. Pains me to say it, but they are looking a good shot for the title this term, oh well better city than Liverpool, any day of the week! Talking of Looserpool. The flamboyant Jürgen Klopp seems to be getting some good results from his attacking players. However, it is in defence that he needs to do more. Early games were exciting to watch, but you couldn’t help but think every opposition attack would lead to a goal. Jose Mourinho has had a stop-start start to his tenure as new boss at the Theatre of Dreams. There are still clearly issues with the strength and depth of the squad. Whether transfer activity in the January window will be able to help Jose to firm up key areas remains to be seen.
The Sack Race!
The usual merry-go-round of manager chopping and changing hasn’t quite kicked-off yet. That said, it’s pretty safe to expect movement’s at some of the “under-threat” of relegation clubs. Could England national team’s only 100% manager make a bid to come back and save Sunderland from relegation for the 2nd season in a row? Whatever happens it seems a long shot that David Moyes will still be the Black Cat’s manager at the end of this season. Will Bob Bradley still be in situ at Swansea? Not likely as he is hot favourite to be the next manager given his P45. Alan Pardew is seemingly under pressure as Palace manager, with his side a little too close to the bottom of the table for comfort. Given the obscene amounts of money at stake for dropping out of the league we can expect to see real pressure on managers at any of the lower placed clubs. West Ham, Hull City, Stoke City and dare I suggest Leicester City’s managers will be hoping that they have a fairly immediate turn in fortunes and are able to put some breathing space between them and the lower placed clubs.

Andy Murray - The Prince of British Tennis
O
n Sunday evening the 20th November 2016, Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic to claim the ATP World Tour Finals and cement his position even further as undisputed world No.1 The victory extended his current winning run to 24 matches. Andrew Castle, the BBC’s sports commentator, was glowing of his appraisal of Murray, “This achievement, to put in perspective, is bigger than any grand slam. It takes an awful lot of work.” Murray is without doubt the most successful British Tennis player ever but at first it did not always look like the petulant young Scot was going to reach such high levels. To topple Novak Djokovic at the O2 Arena was a mighty achievement and to replace him as the best player in the world is staggering. The Glaswegian first turned pro in 2005 and it was a very different young man that took to the courts back then. The raw talent was obviously there but it was also combined with a very moody and sometimes surly personality. Andy Murray somehow had developed characteristics the top pampered stars such as Nastase and McEnroe showed at their peak but he was yet to achieve anything.Today Andy Murray is a totally different person, apart from the odd reminder that he is Scottish rather than British, his temperament on the court is now flawless and focused. Sponsorship veterans said that Murray’s beefed-up appeal comes from calming down his rants and sulks, aided by the fact that now he is married Kim, 28, and has become father to Sophia, born in February. He has also become a top attraction and somebody fans want to queue up and watch. His tennis is now at the forefront, and he is playing better than anybody else out there at present. In 2015, he’s earned $8m in prize money and $15m in endorsements. With deals with Standard Life, Head and Rado, plus a four-year contract with Under Armour worth $6m annually, Murray’s net worth is estimated at $70. To put this in perspective, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams both pocketed $160 in the same year and Roger Federer was top of the tree with an estimated $359 net worth. However Murray’s allure to the sponsors and advertisers is growing rapidly as the tantrums are behind him and he is playing some exceptional tennis. His grand slam and ATP wins, together with his Beckham-style family appeal means the modern day Andy Murray is a very packageable proposal, as far as the marketeers are concerned. In fact David Beckham’s agent Simon Fuller, also masterminds Murray’s sponsorship partnerships. Murray’s wealth doubled

coaches, in particular Jamie Delgado who is a low profile coach bought into Team Murray this year. Delgado has been a constant companion since his appointment in February, providing technical savvy, hitting ability and friendship that Murray clearly values highly. The supreme tactician, Ivan Lendl was also taken on board in June. If Delgado offered the week-in, week-out grind of the tour advice, Lendl coached for the grand slams. This added finesse from Lendl gave a finishing school polish to Murray’s overall game.
after his last Wimbledon win and according to veteran sponsorship consultant Nigel Currie, it is due to double again. Currie said, “ His family make him more and more marketable as he attracts wider media coverage now, as celebrity families do, and that makes him even more marketable.” It is not just his temperament that Murray has improved, he has worked hard at developing his game also. His modern work ethic is well known on the circuit, and remains as punishing as ever as he enters the later stages of his career. Once a weakness in Murray’s game was his second serve but he has worked hard to rectify it. The success of his hard work was there for everybody to see at the O2 on Sunday, no longer a timid effort there for the taking, it dug him out of trouble more than once against Milos Raonic in the competition. In 2015 at the Australian Open, Murray’s average second serve was 85 mph, in 2016 this had increased to 93 mph with the fastest clocked at 108 mph.
Mats Wilander, the former world No.1 was quoted as saying, “If we are honest, at 35 is Roger Federer going to win another Slam and threaten the top three? At times, yes, but I’m not really sure.” “Rafa Nadal might win a French Open or two, but is he going to be a threat again on hard courts?” “Djokovic has been there for so long but at some point his intensity and motivation has got to slip, so who is left? Andy Murray.” What Wilander is trying to say is that the rise of Murray to the top of the tree in World Tennis is a predictable accession. Because by deduction the former greats are now waning as they get older. Murray is in his prime, and has reached the pinnacle of his game at exactly the right time. All that being said, Murray has had to fight his way to the top against very strong opposition. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are three of the greatest men’s singles players ever to play the sport, and they all graced the game at the same time, and for a long period. When one did have a dip in form the other two took up the baton and ruled. Over the past ten years there has been no easy period, where you could get lucky against just one top star in a final.Andy Murray is a player you either love or hate, perhaps a legacy from his early petulant days and his supposedly disliking of everything English. There is something that however you cannot dispute, in a highly competitive era of tennis he has risen to the top, and that is something that must be respected and admired.
Murray’s improvement has relied heavily on the advice of his

i Folks, once again the weather has not been good for fishing. Scot’s guys aboard Captain Deang’s boat had a good run early December. All the seven guys came back with decent fish, however there were no queen fish (bpla salat) caught at all. Most unusual as these are the main game fish for this area. I have not had many trips due not only to the weather but I have had a new boat built for me. Just like a GoGo bar, the image in your head and what you end up with differ somewhat. So every other day for the last ten days has been at the boatyard. I got most of what I wanted, compromised on some bits and got a bill bigger than agreed. Ah well. However it is a lot more stable boat and using the same engine I get 11.5 kts as appose to 8.5 kts. I have been trolling for squid to use as live bait. The biggest problem is that 60 percent die in the first hour of being caught. This is due to the stress of being hauled some thirty feet into the boat. So I decided to use three squid lures set 4 inches apart on 6lb fluorocarbon and a small weight on the end. I trolled this rig in two to three metres depth and only three metres from the back of the boat. I could see the top lure clearly as I raised the rod as I trolled at one knot. Not only did I get twelve squid but four hours later all of them were alive. This bodes well when I go for big fish as now I will only need to catch six squid before setting off. Live squid has got to be the best bait, I think the fish will hit them even if they are not in feeding mode. All the big fish I have gutted have had very small fish in their stomach, they must just hoover them up. When you use bigger baits the fish will bite them first and they bite on the wire or the hook. The fish will try to spit out the bait. That’s why I also like very small red sand fish (bpla si deang) as bait. However even using live squid will not catch fish if they are not in the area.

boat. All rigs were 20lb braid, six feet of 20lb fluorocarbon, nine inches of 30lb non coated wire and a single S/S hook. I forgot to put the clicker on one rod, so I looked in amazement when one rod bent over and line shot off the reel. Luckily I had just reeled in my small fishing rod so I had my hands on the rod in an instant. The fish ran straight away from the back of the boat, I had to weave the fishing rod around the other rigs to keep the line clear. Then the fish came back slowly, no jumps so it was not a queen fish. Directly under the boat I started to bring him up and he fought back by going straight down. This happened four or five times, it was a real slugging fight. I caught a glimpse of the fish deep down and just like a big horse mackerel does when the fight is nearly over he turned onto his side. Into the net went a 3kg banded golden trevally. I owed a favor to John so he got the fish and he said it tasted great! The horse mackerel (bpla thoo) have just started to come in. Great fun on light tackle and as I troll for them, no lead weight. However they are late and still not in the huge shoals that made the water boil in fifty yard circle. Have fun Roger.
I had a run out to Koh Man Wichia looking for big fish. After anchoring up at the start of the dropping tide I put out the usual four rods. Three with floats set at eighty or so feet (sea is about ninety five feet deep) at a distance of fifteen yards apart from one another. A rig straight down off the side of the

157 players, including 7 ladies, made the journey this month to the Phoenix course, where we played the Lakes & Ocean combination. Although the weather was warm, there was a breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace. We played from the white tee markers and while some were forward, there were others playing their full length, plus a bit. The course was the same challenge for all and good scores were not easy to make, save for a few golfers. The past 2 months has seen outstanding performances for the tournament Low Gross, and while Jack Grinvold was a little off those scores, his 76 was the best of the day. His score also got him 2nd place on countback over Dennis Steele (12) 19/17 after both signed for 36 points. Daniel Grob (10) led the way in the premier flight with 37 points, to go with his technical prize from the 15th. The C flight had the best scores of the day, with Donal McGuigan leading the way with 42 points, with Laurie Dixon (29) gaining 2nd spot with a solid 40 points. Kenny Chung picked up the bronze medal position, with him recording 39 points. The B flight, for handicaps 14 - 19, was tightly contested, with all placegetters separated by a series of countbacks, which required assistance from Einstein for final results, after 38 points proved a popular score. Without sensory overload by figures, it was Per Forsberg (16) on the top spot, while Henry Anderson (18) got the silver. Third spot went to Jukka Kangas (17) , while Lee Adams was the unlucky player to miss out on the prizes. The Ladies clear winner on 37 points was Suwana Kerjaleon (17)
Other than Jack and Daniel who picked up a brace of prizes, Jerry Langer was the only 2 time visitor to the podium, picking up a long putt and a long drive. Dave was at it again, who with his capable staff on the BBQ, kept the large number of attendees well satisfied with their tasty selection of tucker for the night. Next tournament on Tuesday 20 December at Phoenix will see the culmination of another highly successful Pattaya Amateur Golf Series, so get your preferred timeslot by booking with Shane on 0863720084.

attaya race fans were recently treated to an unusual sight as the Caterham Motorsport Championship, a so far Sepang Circuit, Malaysia based series exclusively reserved for the historic-styled Caterham Seven single seater racecars, arrived at Bira Circuit for a weekend of action. The Asian Caterham Motorsport Championship springs from a similar series held in the UK, the original home of these cars, and first kicked off last year so this was its second season – and the trip to Bira Circuit was not just its first visit to Thailand but the first time the series had ventured outside of Malaysia. The cars are broken up into two classes with two very distinctively different powered versions of the Caterham Seven. The top class is contested by the ‘420R’ which features a 2.0-litre dry sump engine with 210 hp mated to a 6-speed Quaife-sourced sequential transmission and that means this lightweight ‘rocket’ is good for a top speed of 230 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. It also adds up an impressive 400 bhp/tonne and means the 420R can blitz its way round Sepang Circuit in a very handy 2 minutes and 22 seconds. The second string class is powered by a 1.6-litre engine coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox; it has 140 hp on tap and can reach 205 km/h while making the dash from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The Sevens are pretty well kitted out too with a plethora of track specification parts including a lightweight racing flywheel, side exit exhaust, limited slip differential, beefed up cooling system and quick release steering wheel while on the safety front there is an FIA homologated rollcage, race seat with 6-point harness, plumbed in fire extinguisher system and electrical cutout switches. The championship’s first race outside of Malaysia didn’t fail to surprise and historic Bira’s short and narrow characteristics perfectly suited these small, lightweight and highly agile racecars. The drivers’ reported that they loved the different feel of the cars around Bira, most notably the kart-like handling while speeding around the Double Apex and through the S1 and S2 Chicanes. There was also some local flavour thrown into the proceedings as B-Quik Racing’s Shaun Varney signed on in the Supersport class with the aim of racking up some extra track time as the Super Car GTM Porsche driver was in fact making his first visit to Bira Circuit.

During Saturday’s opening encounter the racing starting early for Halim Mu’Azzam as he launched off the starting grid before the red lights went out, soaring up the middle of the grid to take the lead briefly before the 420Rs took their place at the front of the pack. Marcus Chye stormed into the lead with guest driver Rocky Siow hot on his heels and looking at every opportunity to pass. Marcus would in fact hold off the other 420R drivers for the whole race before crossing the line to take the chequered flag, only to be disqualified having ignored a drive through penalty for encroaching over the pitlane line. Guest driver Arnaud Dupuis would also be disqualified for the same reason, an unfortunate end to his first Caterham race after a strong performance running in the top three. Tan Pye Sen overtook Rocky Siow after a daring move into the chicane to take
second position and eventually the win; that was his first win of the year. The Supersport class produced some nail biting racing with Halim Mu’Azzam and Shaun exchanging places for the lead on several occasions during the early stages of the race. In the end B-Quik Racing’s New Zealand driver claimed top honours in his first Caterham Motorsport Championship race after finishing nearly 15 seconds in front of Halim. For Sunday’s second race Malcolm and Arnaud had to start at the back of the grid in their 420R machines as a penalty for their infringements in Race 1. However by turn three Malcolm and Arnaud had stormed up to the top two positions. Arnaud was doing a great job defending Marcus with the lead changing a couple of times before Marcus took the top spot down the back straight. His advantage was short lived though as an over-eager Arnaud touched the rear end of his car entering the second chicane, forcing Marcus into a spin. Marcus then suffered handling issues from the incident and would eventually trail home in last position. It was a very tight battle for the Supersport lead with Halim not allowing Shaun to pull out any sort of an advantage. However, after making several attempts to pass, Halim finally made a move stick towards the end of the race. It was looking like a race win for Halim until Shaun made one last dive down the inside of the second chicane on the last lap, reclaiming the lead and holding it around the last corner to take the chequered flag first. An impressive double victory for Shaun on his debut in the Caterham Motorsport Championship. There was no clear leader in the 420R class as the top three drivers – Arnaud, Pye and Rocky – were within one second of each other, and exchanged places many times. Making moves through Turn 2 and diving down the inside of Turn 3 were the favourite options of this battling trio. After an exciting battle for the lead Arnaud Dupuis made a gutsy move on the outside of Turn 2 to storm off into the lead. Crossing the chequered flag in first position, Arnaud would then be classified second due to a 30-second penalty for making a false start. This penalty would hand Pye his second win for the weekend with Rocky Siow finishing in third spot. Meanwhile, Shirendra Lawrence would claim third position in the Supersport class after an intense battle with Malcolm Chang.

As the chequered flag falls on another year it’s time to reflect on the last 12 months for TR-Motorsport.
fter our invincible season in 2015 we knew 2016 would not be as easy as we stepped up a league into the Thailand Super Series Super Production Class. Although we battled hard throughout the early parts of the season second place in the championship is now all we can hope for as we head to the postponed final race in Bang Saen in February. Reliability issues once again reared their head as we lost vital points early on, however, when everything did work we were setting faster lap times than the eventual series winner Hideharu Kuroki. TR-Motorsport would like to congratulate Hideharu on his perfect season although at times we were faster and right behind him we couldn’t manage to overtake and beat him to the line. He has won every race so far, the sign of a great driver and a great team and we look forward to the final challenge of the season in Bang Saen! 2017 promises to be a defining moment in the history of TR-Motorsport as we sadly say goodbye to the ‘Blue Blur’ Honda City but welcome a brand new Porsche 997 Generation 1 to the team! No, you are not reading this wrong, the time has come for our Danish Dynamo Thomas Raldorf to mix it with the big boys of Motorsport in Thailand. After months of lengthy negotiations we are very proud and pleased to announce that for 2017 we will be competing in the Thailand Super Series Supercar GTC Class. Thomas will get the chance to compete against some of the fastest cars in the Kingdom. The new Porsche was on display at the recent Movers & Shakers event held in Pattaya, and proved quite popular with the guests. More details about the 2017 season and the upcoming press conference and car launch will be printed here in the coming weeks. Of course all the above is not possible without the gracious support of our sponsors, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our main sponsor ContiX and our other sponsors, Singha Corporation, CEA Project Logistics, Inspire Pattaya, Haven Consultants, Lenso Wheels, PFC Brakes, Global Insurance and Jameson’s Pattaya. We would also like to thank all our volunteers who give up their personal time to help throughout the season, and last but not least a big thank you to all our fans, friends and followers around the world who have supported us, we hope you will continue to do so in 2017 and beyond. From all at TR-Motorsport we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! TR-Motorsport will next be in action at the Bang Saen Festival of Speed / Thailand Super Series - February 24th – 26th 2017 For more information visit www.tr-motorsport.com or facebook.com/TRMotorsportThailand

Bringing in the New Year, Traditions Around The World
A
s a child on New Year’s Eve, I remember my father going outside of the house and placing a lump of coal and a dry slice of bread on the step. It is rather a blurred memory as it was many years ago, and it was a ritual that was never ever explained to me. I just thought that my dad had one or two libations too many and was acting about to get a laugh, which he was prone to do at times. But this memory brought about my natural curiosity of how other brethren around the world celebrate the new year. Apart from the actual fact that different religions and races believe that the turn of the year occurs at various dates and times, I was particularly interested in how people actually celebrate the event.
Great Balls of Fire In Scotland, New Year is called “Hogmanay,” and the Scots take the occasion very seriously indeed, as it does involve alcohol after all. It has its roots with the Vikings, when the Norsemen observed the winter solstice in late December. One of the most explosive celebrations is held in Stonehaven, the locals create balls from paper and other flammable materials and then set fire to them whilst swinging them around their heads on ropes or wire.
The Bear Necessities Chasing away evil spirits as the year turns is a pretty popular pastime at New Year. But in Romania they take things pretty much to the limit. There is an old rural tradition that’s gaining popularity in the towns and cities, in which townsfolk dress in elaborate bear costumes and menacingly move from house to house to drive away any evil presences.
Russian Good Cheer In Russia many people write down a New Year wish, then set fire to it, placing the burning parchment in a champagne glass. The drink must be quaffed before the last chimes of the clock for good luck to be bestowed upon the person and their wish fulfilled.
Eating-in the New Year If you are visiting Estonia during the festive period be prepared to add one or two extra pounds. New Year’s Day is a race to see just how much food can be consumed within 24 hours. Estonians try to eat seven, nine or twelve times during the day as they are all perceived as lucky numbers. The more a person eats, the more they will be blessed with good luck. Therefore any plump people that you might bump into in Estonia are very lucky indeed.

SPORT & LEISURE
The Has Beans
If you happen to be in South America during New Year and in particular Argentina, then it is advisable that you donn Pink Underwear, as that is a way to guarantee that your love life will be successful in the following year. It does not seem to matter if you are male or female just be comfortable with your pink side. Also in Argentina eating beans is a very important practise for your employment prospects. Consuming ladle fulls of beans will ensure you keep your current employment and even may lead to an improvement of circumstances. I rather think that colleagues would rather sit downwind of your desk if you are a believer in this tradition.
Colombian Carry Out
The Grapes of Good Fortune It is a popular tradition in Spain, Mexico and other Latin American countries to consume twelve grapes at each strike of the clock on New Year. The custom is thought to bring the person prosperity and good fortune in the coming year, and in some countries some people believe it also wards off evil spirits.
Danish Dishware Saving up old crocks or unwashed dishes in the months leading to New Year in Denmark is a very popular occupation. The reason behind this is that it is traditional to throw old china and crockery at your neighbour’s front door. There seems to be scant information why this supposedly brings good luck but it sure must be a fun event, unless you happen to open the door when a missile is in full flight.
Mixed Up Iceland Iceland has many strange traditions full stop, but around New Year things get a little out of hand with more strange events than you can shake a stick at. Talking cows, seals turning into humans, the dead rising from their graves and elves that like to move house. It all sounds like the Christmas spirit has been poured in large quantities and things are getting a little out of the realms of the unbelievable not the believable.
www.pattayatrader.com
Don’t be surprised visiting Bogota or other parts of Colombia if you think everybody is going on holiday or on a mass exodus. It is tradition that Colombians carry suitcases around with them all day on December 31st, not because they are considering robbing a bank or something, but because Colombians love to travel, and carrying luggage around all day signifies a travel-filled year ahead.
Fighting Fit For The New Year You may think you live in a rough neighbourhood, but in one Peruvian village a good old punch up is the way to see out the old year.Any lingering issues you may have with noisy neighbours, or annoying relatives are all sorted out by having a Cowboy Saloon style fist fight. It does not matter what sex you are, if you have a gripe then knock seven bells out of each other and then wipe the slate clean for the coming year. Many Peruvians New Year’s dinners are eaten through a straw as a consequence of this rather endearing old observance.
Wherever you happen to be over the changing of the year, here at Chaiyapruek Towers we hope that you join in and enjoy the local customs. Most are not as scary as some of the traditions listed here, and many hold great symbolism to the native people. You never know, by having fun and joining in, you may bring good fortune in the future, even though it may involve losing a few teeth and helping a few elves to move house.

What happens
next for the Brits? Since British people woke up to the news that their country has voted to leave the European Union, there has been turmoil in financial markets – the pound hit a 30-year low and the FTSE dropped almost 10 percent Though the Brexit process will probably take at least two years (and the UK will remain a full member of the EU in the meantime), some aspects of the decision have affected British people straight away. 1. The pound in your pocket There is inevitably going to be a period of uncertainty and turmoil. As the referendum result emerged, the pound fell 10% against the US dollar on the foreign exchange markets and 7% against the Euro. If this persists UK imports, such as oil (affecting domestic fuel prices and petrol), foreign cars, coffee, bananas and clothing, will all cost more. Overall, then, the general price level keeps rising meaning that your income will not stretch quite so far.
Longer term, economists have been unanimous in predicting that UK growth is likely to be lower outside the EU than it would have been inside. Businesses do not like uncertainty, so they may put off investing in new plant, machinery and jobs, as being outside the EU trading bloc may make trading with other countries more difficult and some firms may decide to quit the UK. This could mean that jobs and wages will be lower than they might otherwise have been, though not necessarily lower than today.
If you’re holidaying here in Thailand over the coming months and haven’t bought your currency yet, the weaker pound means you’ll also now pay more.
2. Your job and income A weak pound affects industry as well and so may impact on jobs. Company costs will rise if they import their raw materials and most firms will be hit by higher fuel prices. But the fall in sterling makes it easier for exporters to sell their goods and services abroad. So some jobs and wages may be more at risk, while recruitment rises in other areas.

global financial crisis of 2008 with rock-bottom interest rates. It’s unclear what might happen to these. On the one hand, rising consumer prices may push interest rates up; and credit rating agencies have said they will downgrade Government debt which means the government would have to raise interest rates to persuade savers to buy its debt. But, if the economy struggles to grow, the Bank of England might embark on new rounds of quantitative easing to keep interest rates low to encourage economic growth.
4. Your home and mortgage if you still own one in GB
Before the referendum the then chancellor threatened a post-Brexit emergency Budget that would cut public spending and raise taxes. This was seen as an unlikely response since it would have further depressed the UK economy just when it is reeling with uncertainty and MPs across all parties were quick to say they would not support such measures. Mrs. May has not acted on it.
3. Your savings and pensions Uncertainty while markets adjust and firms decide how to respond means the UK stock market will remain volatile for some time. Anyone who has recently retired and opted to take an income using drawdown (periodic cashing in of a pension fund still invested in the stock market) may have to take tough decisions about drawing less income now or risk running out of retirement savings later on. Savers have suffered since the
www.pattayatrader.com
While savers would welcome a rise in interest rates, this would increase mortgage repayments for borrowers and could even trigger repossessions. The IMF has predicted that UK house prices could drop sharply post-Brexit. You might be concerned about that if you are in one of the six out of ten UK households that own their own home. But this could be good news for younger generations who have been struggling to afford a home. The uncertainty remains with the Government yet at time of writing to respond to the High Court Brexit ruling.
Whatever their decision all the expats I know just want the pound to strengthen irrespective of in or out of the EU.
