here are many pro’s and con’s to be taken into consideration when you are planning the big day in your life and if you are thinking of marrying abroad you might have lingering nightmares of your grandparents not being able to make it, or dear friends not being able to afford it. The biggest issue of getting married in a tropical location being that all the guests may not be able to attend. Perhaps your grandmother who has been dreaming of the big event all her life is not capable of a long haul flight ? There are ways around such issues and they are not insurmountable obstructions, for example a second reception back home can always be incorporated into the arrangements. The advantages of having a wedding in a tropical location are many. Such as taking your vows in the open air and celebrating the day in an exotic location, with different food, flowers and music.Another massive difference of getting hitched abroad is the cost, it can be far cheaper than in Europe or America. Many couples buy just their own tickets and, while the bride’s father normally foots the bill, when the wedding is abroad it is acceptable that guests pay for their own flights and accommodation. The size of the wedding breakfast and the evening celebrations are also diminished as less guests tend to be involved. Another big benefit is the whole planning of the event, it is customary that a wedding agent or venue does all the planning and preparation that is required. Many hotels and wedding companies are just ready and waiting to accept your booking and organise the big day from

Often the cost is negated by the charge for accommodation in their hotels or villas. There are a plethora of such venues and agencies that exist in Thailand, and Pattaya is a popular destination for wedding parties. The married couple and guests alike will stay on after the wedding for a honeymoon or the holiday of a lifetime. Pattaya has been hosting weddings since the mid 80’s; its first rate shopping, restaurants, beaches, attractions and events cater to a clientele who wish to combine business and leisure. The seaside city is also located just 120km from Bangkok and therefore is easy to get to for the wedding party and guests also.

If you are planning your wedding and thinking of a venue that offers a combined beach location and a garden setting, Dusit Thani Pattaya will fit your preference perfectly. The resort is surrounded by a tropical garden that greets guests as they enter the resort. There is also a peaceful indoor atrium with a cascading manmade waterfall the provides guests a soothing ambience. There are many other venues dotted around Pattaya to suit all budgets and desires. All are competing for your business so deals can be struck and a wedding in Thailand can be extremely affordable. Also Pattaya can throw up some unique ideas for a wedding with a difference. For instance Private Scuba might tempt you with an underwater ceremony. They offer a unique wedding package which allows you to say “I Do” while surrounded by a rainbow of tropical fish. Only really suitable for experienced divers and couples who have health certificates from their doctors. Perhaps a luxury yacht charter in the Gulf of Thailand can provide that ultimate backdrop for the wedding of the year ? It certainly will impress the guests and the photo album will be one of envy to many friends back home. Or the picturesque Silverlake Vineyard with mountain views and stunning location could be the perfect venue for an exotic wedding and the marvellous gardens with the “Love” theme are ideal for the post ceremony photos. Thailand does not just mean beach weddings, there are many options that are open to the newly to be bride and groom. The only thing that hinders you is your own imagination, so take the plunge literally and figuratively.

Hi Readers How many of you are still feeling as hopeful about 2017 as you were when the clocks struck 12 on the 31st? I don’t think January did much to give us hope but there is some quiet optimism around town suggesting that things are improving and Pattaya certainly seems busier - so I’m not giving up on the Rooster just yet. Neither are New Nordic who heralded in the Chinese New Year with the official opening of Kong Juu . The new Hemingways, in Jomtien is also set to be a sure fire hit giving some serious competition to other large venues in town. Last month I was saddened to hear of the death of John Hurt a brilliant actor if ever there was one . His portrayal of the outrageous Quentin Crisp was certainly a landmark performance and there is scheduled for this year a Pride Parade in Bangkok. It will be the first one in over 11 years and to celebrate this we e thought we’d extend the theme of this edition’s Pink Pattaya Trader not only, post Valentine’s Day to look through rose coloured glasses at weddings but to also consider the Pink Baht and Pink Sequinned gowns of our fabulous Pattaya Personality Jim Lumsden. For those of you feeling less than positive Class’s story on page 16 is a tale of tremendous courage and fortitude that should inspire us all to be more optimistic. Onwards and Upwards !

Cabaret Shows

P

attaya hosts the ultimate in alternative cabaret shows through its colourful performing arts scene. The elaborate shows have gleaned world-wide fame, due to the stunning ladyboy entertainers who are the finest and most beautiful on the planet. The shows at the acclaimed Tiffany’s Show, Alcazar and The Coliseum are performed at state- of-the-art luxurious theatres and are usually so well attended that advanced booking is required.

Tiffany’s Cabaret Show

Tiffany’s was the first ever transvestite cabaret show in southeast Asia, starting in a small bar as a one-man show in Pattaya back in 1974. Since then literally millions of people have seen the stunning show every evening.Tiffany’s has now become a household name across southeast Asia and the rest of the world for first class performances and the most beautiful ladyboys in Thailand. There are over 100 dancers and performers that will take you through time and different lands as they perform exotic routines, the choreography is second to none and the costumes dazzling. Legends come to life, glamour holds no boundaries, music pulsates and the show lasts a lifetime in the memory.

Alcazar

Another long established favourite in Pattaya, Alcazar Cabaret show had its first performance in 1981 in a theatre with a capacity of only 350 people. The show moved to its current location in

The Colosseum

The Colosseum is Thailand’s newest, largest and grandest cabaret show opening its doors in June 2013. The theatre is one of the grandest in Thailand and cost THB 400 million to build in the style of a Roman amphitheatre. The Colosseum show is presented in 16 different segments featuring a futuristic light and sound system, together with hydraulic stage superb props, scenery and wonderful costumes. 1990, and has been wowing 1,200 capacity audiences ever since. The sound and light system is state-of-the-art but plays second fiddle to the real attraction of the show, and that is the transvestite dancers. The 70 minute performances are shown 4 times nightly, and the energy and endurance of the dancers amaze as they gracefully glide across the stage, singing, dancing, gyrating through seventeen amazing routines.

The Venue

Situated within Jomtien complex off Thappraya road is a superb

Millions of people have laughed, sang-a-long, clapped their hands, tapped their feet as they enjoyed every second of Alcazar’s brilliant performances.

hidden gem, The Venue is not as grand as the three formerly mentioned Cabaret Shows but still holds its place amongst the best venues in Pattaya. The Venue is an intimate Cabaret Show Bar and has free admission. The full production staged in three parts is well choreographed and changes regularly every couple of days. The cast features 4 gorgeous ladyboys, a beautiful drag queen and twelve handsome male dancers. The Venue attracts quite a big gay crowd but is not limited to that genre and is popular amongst all tourists.

Is Your Business Addressing The Pink Baht?

T

hailand attracts visitors for many reasons: the glorious climate, the fabulous sandy beaches, the exotic islands, the sumptuous food, and the fascinating friendly people. But there is also another reason that draws people from all over the globe to this fabulous kingdom and that is its relaxed attitude to minorities and in particular minorities of differing sexual orientation. It is common to see gays and transexuals in all walks of life in Thailand, there are no phobias or hangups deeply imbedded into the Thai psyche. Perhaps this is due to the teachings of Buddha or the Thai general attitude to acceptance of others but it is certainly very different to many places around the world. Consequently openly gay bars, restaurants, shops, clubs, hotels and businesses exist in Thailand and are all set up to cater for the Pink Baht. Smart entrepreneurs have identified this business opportunity whilst others, who have less open minds, are turning away good revenue. Pattaya is an extremely good example of this, businesses actively promote gay services and reap the rewards. Areas like Boyz Town, Pattaya Land, Dongtan and Jomtien Complex are stacked full of restaurants, bars, cabaret shows, clothes shops, hairdressers, hotels, tourist agents and everything else under the sun. The Tiffany Show, Alcazar and Colosseum are recognised as some of the best transgender cabaret shows in the world, and they draw tourists from all over the globe, gay and straight. They are so popular, booking is a prerequisite. But the magic of the plan is that whilst these top entertainment and associated businesses keep their tills jingling with the Pink Baht, they are more than happy to accept money from straight sources also, therefore two revenue streams. It has always struck me as not particularly business savvi to restrict any sort of revenue whatsoever. Signs in hotels such as “gays and ladyboys not welcome” have always baffled me. Is the Pink Baht of any less value than any other currency? Or is the hotel so busy it can turn custom away? Or is it simply a blatant case of prejudice? I rather think the latter is more of the case and is a poor recipe for a successful business.Rather than turning away the Pink Baht, your business should be addressing ways of how to embrace it. There are many ways of achieving this, and social media is a free and excellent way to advertise your business as gay friendly. Talk to the owners of successful businesses such as, The Venue, Yupin’s, Natans, and Ganymede who all have made great triumphs of the hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues they operate. Look around the room as you are dining or enjoying the show and notice how diverse the patrons are. Young or Old, Gay or Straight, Black or White, Asian or Ferrang they all have one thing in common, they are all parting with their Pink Bahts and having a great time doing so.

FROM CANCER TO COACHING Cancer is not the end - sometimes it is a new beginning

T

his story starts with a career girl in her 30s who worked in the heart of the corporate business hub of Europe. In a world where what one wore and drove made the difference and working 80 hours a week was the norm, feeling tired did not seem strange. However one weekend she found herself having to stay in her bed for 48 hours straight . Valiantly she carried on for months afterwards managing to function normally until one day a meeting changed her life forever… On a trade mission in a far away country, she met a business owner with whom she instantly clicked. The lady told her the story of her husband who had recently passed away after cancer had crept upon him quickly and harshly. The story was told in a straightforward, factual way but nonetheless brought Claas to tears as for the first time she said out loud “I think I have cancer too”. This led to a harsh reply by the business owner; “Tell me the facts now!” But there were none, other than some lumps and suspicions. The business owner did not hold back: she looked Claas in the eye and said: “Face it girl, you have cancer”. Thirty minutes later Claas rang her GP and booked an immediate flight back home. Upon arrival at the airport she continued her journey straight to the clinic where she arrived long after hours. Since the two of them had known each other for many years her GP agreed to see her but his face was set in a grim expression as he started the examination. It looked bad, very bad and Claas couldn’t help but wonder if it was a coincidence that the date was Friday the 13th ….! “I couldn’t believe this was happening to me. My lifestyle was busy but I was exercising, eating healthily, never smoked and no one in my family had ever had cancer. What was happening to

me? I was in utter shock and disbelief.” Shortly after discovering that her cancer was of an aggressive and only recently discovered kind, Claas received treatment in the Netherlands. Unfortunately not all the treatment available was covered by her insurance so all her savings and earnings went toward this. It made a difficult situation even harder. Surgeries, chemos, radiations, medication and many doctor appointments followed. At times sheer desperation hit but she continued to exercise and eat well and actively engaged in the decision making and planning of her treatment. She switched from the original, standard chemo to a new approach, a move that ultimately would save her life. Convinced that the disease wouldn’t get her and determined to at least do something positive about it, she said “yes” to every study or research request her doctors had. Obviously, continuing to work as normal was impossible but when she told her employer she was seriously ill, she was fired on the spot. Now out of work she no longer had any prospects of a normal future. “When the ‘verdict’ of cancer comes along, one loses more than perspective and hair. It is scary how quickly friendships are lost and commitments broken. People say the strangest things like; ‘you must have the easy cancer’ or ‘it’s okay for you to have it, you’re so strong, no problem!’ Well let me assure you, there is no such thing as an easy cancer. Also I had been diagnosed with a very aggressive (metastased) stage 3b cancer. What’s easy about that?" Soon after the chemos, being bald and upset, she started working for the biggest competitor of her previous employer. The mission was to rebuild a normal life as soon as possible. Unfortunately, when after 2 years the follow up medication stopped, the cancer came back….More surgery, chemos and radiations followed as well as blood plate replacement therapy. Again she had to give up work and by this time only a handful of friends persevered with her. The whole process of treatment and recovery took another 2 years. Although Claas maintained a healthy lifestyle, doctors could not give her a very promising outlook. To them it was clear she would never have children, nor would she be likely to get much older than 40. “Naturally I was devastated. Yet I took it day by day, tried to get over the smaller hurdles rather than look at it as one giant mountain. I couldn’t face that mountain. It was just too big. At times it felt as if my future was taken from me and I had nothing left to look forward to. But the days passed and turned into weeks and the weeks into months and then years… Somehow I managed to get through it.” Then one day, coming back from her radiation therapy, she pulled into a gas station and a friendly gentleman, with a breath-tak-

ing smile, approached her for a chat. One thing lead to another and before long they were on a date. To Claas it was clear; this was it! Mr. Right had come along. However, his biggest wish in life was to have a family and she was left with the difficult but right decision to tell him she could not have children. Mr. Right took the news very well and although sad, he was sure they would find other ways of having a fulfilling life together. Shortly after, the pair moved in together and as the days passed happily, Claas’s hair grew back and her energy levels increased every day. Unfortunately one day she noticed it was much harder to climb the stairs and fear crept upon her. She could think of only one thing: her type of cancer had a tendency to spread to lungs and liver. She managed to keep those thoughts to herself, until a friend who joined her for some exercise jokingly said “what’s wrong with you, you’re so slow, you’re not pregnant are you?”. That was an option that had not occurred to Claas! Hope rose as well as a deep fear. Her last treatment had only been a few weeks ago….There was only one way to find out. Claas rushed off to the drugstore and found several pregnancy tests. They all said the same thing: “pregnant”. Could it be true? The next day an appointment at the Cancer Hospital followed and after the regular check the doctor asked ‘anything else?’ "Well yes, I’m pregnant” Claas replied. The doctor stared at her, in utter disbelief.Against their advice she decided to keep the baby and soon after he was born she fell pregnant again. Today both children are well and healthy. “During the second pregnancy the opportunity to move to Thailand occurred. What better way to start over and leave many bad memories behind? On top of that, it was a nice career move for my husband. We instantly loved Thailand and lived happily for a few years. The great thing was, nobody knew about my medical history and I could almost live normally, just like anyone else.” Which she did. She worked, was an active parent and had a whole new social life. It was during one social event that she mentioned she wasn’t feeling so well. A friend prompted “Shouldn’t you be talking to a doctor right now?” and it hit home like a meteorite. “It’s like this feeling when you know you’re pregnant, or something is up. Your instincts are usually right. A doctor’s visit the next day confirmed the bad news: cancer. Again.” Within 48 hours of tests the cancer was confirmed its status given and what the treatment would be explained. How different this was from the experiences back home! Although devastated by the news, Claas felt blessed to have access to advanced medicine and help from medical professionals. The treatment started immediately and was successful. "Had I not been in Thailand, I might not be around anymore. The care I received here was excellent. I was a person and the quality of my day-to-day life was as much on the agenda as the fighting of the cancer. I was warned that the side effects of the new drugs I was prescribed, might lead me to gain 20 to 30 kilos. Being already big (never lost that baby weight) something in my mind said: NO! I decided to get help from personal trainers but they were either not interested, not certified or not willing to work with a patient like me. So I decided to become a coach myself. Imagine that, both my lungs damaged by radiation, my organs heavily affected by series of chemos and radiation. What was I thinking? I kept exercising and eating well. And for my birthday my husband bought me a treadmill. Soon dumbbells followed and my initial walks of 10 minutes turned into an hour of serious compound exercises. I bought more equipment and completed a trainer’s course. I started to go hiking and running and swimming and playing on the trampoline with my kids and eating right and not long after I noticed: not only did I not put on the extra weight I lost 20 kg.” Claas was fascinated by the fact that she could bring back her energy levels and that she had overcome all the health issues she had before. She also coaches people who are recovering from medical issues or simply want to improve their overall, functional fitness. “People always find an excuse to not work out, but I can assure you the pain of regret is much worse than getting into an exercise routine, plus it’s not like you have to become an Olympic athlete, just the best version of you!” Anyone interested in learning more about Claas or requiring a helping hand getting fitter, please write to pattayatrader@pattayatrader.com and we shall pass your enquiries on.

DR LIAPMUANG PUDPONG - OR JUST CALL HIM DR LI !

W

hen looking at the advantages of visiting a local clinic rather than a large hospital I would cite repeat appointments with the same doctor right up there at the top of my list. Dr Li of the The Sure Cell Pratumnak Medical Centre is certainly a doctor you will want to visit repeatedly. Why? Well firstly he has over 10 years experience in his chosen field of cosmetic treatment. The last 15 months here in Pattaya but prior to that in clinics all around Thailand from Udon Thani, Chantaburi, Chonburi and his very first clinic at Patong Beach, Phuket. Then there is his perfect English which makes discussing requirements and procedures a pleasure rather than a headache as those of us who cannot speak Thai will attest to, if having struggled in the past to make oneself understood with a mixture of Pidgeon and hand signals.. Finally there is his relaxed, manner and gentle sense of humour that will immediately put you at ease. This unhurried yet professional manner comes I would guess from the 10 years experience of looking at thousands of faces and answering even more questions, giving hundreds of thousands of injections and a limitless amount of extra time to general health and well being advice. Dr Li practices what he preaches having kept up with a regime of exercising started from his earliest days at Patong Beach where the clinic owner had a gym that he was free to use. This same owner 10 years on is still his patient so keen is he to continue to get his treatment from Dr Li even though he now resides in Pattaya.

In fact the holistic manner with which Dr Li treats his patients runs throughout Sure Cell from Dr Peter Lewis through all the staff. Dr Li explains that just as Dr Lewis will want to discuss lifestyle, diet and exercise so Dr Li will do the same as a practitioner for his patients. He estimates these to be 20% Thai with the balance being comprised of a variety of nationalities: Scandinavian, Australian, American, Russian, Indian, European - to name a few. The visiting Chinese to date have not shown much interest in Cosmetic treatments as they seem to have little knowledge or interest in Cosmetic procedures such as Botox, Fillers and the more unusual Cosmetic PRP (Cosmetic Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment which Sure Cell specialises in - doubtless this will come. Certainly there are more than enough international patients right now for Dr Li to treat and most will come to him because of word to mouth recommendation and a reputation for patient care - richly deserved.

Dr Liapmuang Pudpong (Dr Li) General Practice & Cosmetic Doctor; Trained in Orthopaedic Stem Cells, IV Stem Cells and Cosmetic PRP can be contacted at the Surecel Pratumnak Medical Centre Wednesday to Saturday . For an appointment Tel (Thai) +66 90 980 3406 Tel (English) + 66 90 980 3406 Or Email:info@surecell.com.

PATTAYA PERSONALITY - JIM LUMSDEN

O

ur next foray into the world of personalities in Pattaya, took the editor and myself to the Baan Souy Resort Jomtien. The sun was high in a cloudless sky forming a beautiful day, and we were both excited to meet up with somebody that has been part of the Pattaya Gay Scene for many years.Having never been to the Baan Souy before, I was impressed by how easy the Resort was to find. Tucked away in quiet Soi 15 off Thappraya Road, it is about two hundred yards walk from Mata Hari. Entering the building the first thing you notice is the incredible attention to detail in the welcoming lounge that greets you. It is not so much a reception but rather reminds the visitor of somebody’s very tastefully decorated front parlour. From the hand picked ornaments to the colour co-ordinated soft furnishings, the place oozes class. There our host was waiting to greet us and after formalities were completed we were whisked away to take residence in nearby comfortable sofa and chairs. This is the first time that I had actually met Jim Lumsden, although I had known about the legend for many years who was at the forefront of creating one of Pattaya’s most iconic locale’s, Boyztown and also opening the world famous Boyz, Boyz, Boyz cabaret venue. hotel and bar.At the time there was no gay area in Pattaya, in fact there was only one bar existing in the current location of Boyztown. When Boyz, Boyz, Boyz was established complete with a 14 room hotel it was an instant hit and the cabaret was loved by straight and gay alike encouraging more businesses to move into this new, happening area which became known as Boyztown. the name was obviously based upon it’s most famous resident Boyz, Boyz, Boyz.

Jim mirrored the decor and I understood immediately that he was obviously the creator behind the elegant and polished design that was all around at Baan Souy. From where we were seated I could look out on the opulent pool area that was being enjoyed by numerous patrons. Our genial host explained that today was one of his Wonderful Wednesdays. Because of the curious beach restrictions on Wednesdays, Baan Souy opens its doors for anybody who wishes to use its superb facilities. For 300 bht, you can swim and relax, use the gym, showers and sun decks (with towels provided) and also receive a complimentary cocktail. It was certainly proving a success as many non residents were definitely enjoying their afternoon.

Boyztown’s iconic sign was actually donated by Pepsi Cola, such was the wide acceptance of this welcome new edition to Pattaya’s entertainment world. It was fast growing a reputation across Thailand and with the help of visiting international aircrews to Pattaya, soon worldwide recognition of this new Gay location was cemented. It was during this period that Jim first started treading the boards as a Drag Act initially starting with an appearance once a week. Demand grew so quickly that it wasn’t long before Jim, was headlining the cabaret show at Boyz, Boyz, Boyz every night. Many patrons and staff of the highly popular Tiffany Show and Alcazar would end their evenings’ entertainment at Boyz, Boyz, Boyz and the place was full to the rafters.

Jim started to relay his story, his soft Scottish lilt confirming what had happened to him. As with countless expats living in Pattaya he originally visited Thailand on holiday and fell in love with the land of smiles. After much deliberation with his long term partner Gordon, they decided to open some sort of

By 2000, Boyztown was firmly established as Pattaya’s number one gay area, second only to Soi 4 Bangkok in the whole of Thailand. The owners of the now extremely successful business in Boyztown thought they should give something back to the local gay community of Pattaya and with Jim’s direction the first Pattaya Gay Pride was organised. At this time HIV was becoming a real problem within certain areas of the local Thai community as there was little or no treatment or even drugs available. But help was at hand in the form of Doctor Philippe Seur and the HEARTT 2000 foundation. Jim saw the wonderful voluntary work Doctor Philippe was doing, helping people infected with HIV. Thai and non Thai, gay or straight, Doctor Phillippe accepted everyone into what was the first really effective centre in Pattaya offering treatment against the indiscriminatory disease. So Jim went about organising Pattaya Gay Pride and for four consecutive years raising millions of baht to HEARTT 2000. Eventually after nearly two decades, Jim thought he could not take Boyz, Boyz, Boyz any further and a couple of years ago Jim and his partner Gordon decided to take the next natural progression of their life with the magnificent Baan Souy Resort. At its height Boyz, Boyz, Boyz had over 100 performers and another 100 staff entertaining patrons from all over the world. Today some of Jim’s staff have been with him for over twenty years helping the new venture grow into a successful business.

Also Jim still actively raises money for HEART2000 plus the Rotary Club and others. In recognition of all his hard earned effort he has been awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award, for which he is deservedly extremely proud. Pushing Jim to reveal the amount of money he has helped to raise for these most worthwhile of causes, he reluctantly estimated over 42 million baht and in typical Jim Lumsden style cites a benefactor who regularly donates a motorbike to his charity events as the real unsung hero. Baan Souy is the next chapter in Jim’s incredible life. The clientele is growing solidly and currently boasts an enviable 80% occupancy. Without a doubt the ship has a classy master and those that have experienced the Baan Souy experience certainly are more than happy to sail again. I am glad that the Resort is a success, in my mind Jim deserves to take a slightly more reserved and gentille lifestyle. My editor and I departed Baan Souy Resort with Jim’s last words ringing in our ears, and laughing quite heartedly, “It’s been all about Tits and Teeth really.”

Jim retells his story with affection and fondness, but there is a genuine acceptance that what he is doing now is the right step for both Gordon and himself as this year they celebrate 40 years together. Baan Souy is their home, the guests and staff in the main are their friends, and even Jim’s beloved gowns and wigs have made the transition to their new home, over 400 hundred of them ! In fact he can still be seen occasionally donning them in one of the private parties, on stage at Cabaret Teatro or during his special World Aids Day event.

Authentic Chinese Food in Pattaya? No Kung Pao Chicken at Kong Juu

G

rowing up, my family and I ate take out Chinese food at least 3 times per month. My mother would send me to this tiny little shack next to a strip-mall called Moon Palace and I’d pick up various sundry bags filled with those cool little takeout Chinese food cartons. Then we’d gorge ourselves on stir-fried “delicacies” like “Kung Pao Chicken, Chop Suey and scalding hot “Egg Drop Soup”. We’d scarf it all down, read our fortune cookies and fall into deep MSG-induced slumber. For me and many other westerners, this is representative of our knowledge of Chinese cuisine. Set to receive … there’s none of that at Kong Juu Chinese Restaurant on Pratumnak Hill. After New Nordic’s F&B Director sent me the encyclopedic menu, my suspicions were confirmed. No Kung Pao, no Egg Fooyung and no fortune cookies. Kong Juu is the brainchild of Siriwat Kongsuk (K. Joe); New Nordic’s Food and Beverage Director and Chinese cuisine expert. The name means “angel” and reflects the history of Chinese immigrants to Thailand since before King Rama 6. The restaurant’s design is as Chinese as it gets, right down to the red walls, giant dragon sculpture and Feng Sui arrangement. Two dining rooms offer different atmospheres. One is wide-open with capacity for large parties. The other is more intimate with cozy little booths. While the menu is a dazzling display of Chinese cuisine from all regions. I could survive on the Dim Sum menu alone. They feature those irresistible steamed buns stuffed with bbq pork, sweet cream, lotus seed paste, shrimp, and on and on. Steamed dumplings you say? How about shrimp and pork dumplings topped with crab roe … or abalone? Appetizers include Deep-Fried Soft Shell Crab with Vegetable Salad, Marinated Pigeon with Chinese Wine, Baked Squid in Salt and Chili … and then the menu gets serious. How about Roasted Whole Suckling Pig, Steamed Chicken and Jelly Fish, Barbecued

see on the menu, Kong Juu offers set menus for all sizes of parties and all budgets. You can take a culinary tour of China without ever leaving Pratumnak hill. One part of the menu you’ll surely want to investigate thoroughly is the dessert menu. What would you say to Double Steamed Bird’s Nest in Coconut Milk? How about Chilled Sago and Cantaloupe Melon in Coconut Milk or Mango Pudding or Gingko Nut Lotus Seed Red Date Snow Fungus? Do you even know what snow fungus is? There’s Chilled Sago with Mango and Pomelo, DeepFried Pan Cake with Red Dates, Deep-Fried Banana with Honey and Ice Cream and my favorite, Sesame Dumplings in Hot Ginger Syrup. It sure beats the heck out of a fortune cookie. Now whether you are just visiting Pattaya or are a full-time resident, there is just no excuse for not enjoying authentic Chinese cuisine. Kong Juu is open daily from 11 AM to 11 PM and is located on Pratumnak Soi 4 in the New Nordic Trend 6 building.

Pork Tongue or Duck Tongue with Sesame and Chili? None of that stuff was on the Chinese takeout menu sticking to my mom’s fridge door! Or for visitors who want to taste that special something, there is legendary Bird Nest Soup served four ways. Double Steamed Imperial Bird’s Nest, with Minced Chicken, with Crab Roe and with Chinese Spinach. They also offer prawn and lobster dishes like Baked Lobster in Clear Broth and Stir-Fried Prawn and Banana in Chili Sauce. Like chicken? How about Baked Chicken with Shallot in Black Bean Sauce or Deep-Fried Fillet of Chicken with Orange Sauce. Or maybe Braised Duck with Chestnut in Brown Sauce … or Steamed Scallop and Bean Curd in Black Bean Sauce. The proposed menu for Kong Juu is overwhelming. But fear not, if you are frozen by indecision or just aren’t familiar with what you

The Africa Cup of Nations

F

or the benefitof those who have been living on another planet, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the main international football competition in Africa. However you might be surprised to know that the tournament itself has actually been around 60 years with Sudan staging the tournament, before finishing up Third behind Ethiopia and eventual winners Egypt.

The Early Days South-Africa were due to play Ethiopia in the semifinals but were sadly disqualified due to apartheid. Ethiopia took advantage of the bye before getting on the receiving end of a four-nil thrashing in the final. As the opening tournament to the biannual tournament it holds records for the least amount of teams in attendance, followed by as you would perhaps expect the least amounts of goals scored. This didn’t prevent Egyption Ad-Diba taking the prize of top goalscorer with no less than four of his five goals coming in that final match.

Tournament Expansion As early as 1963 the AFCON tournament saw expansion to feature 8 matches followed by another increase in the 1968 tournament which saw 16 games played out, with Ethiopia taking the main prize, beating United Arab Republic (as it was then) 4:2 after extra time. The most recent hike in games took place in 1998 when there were a total of 32 matches played. The record number of goals scored took place in 2008, with a total of 99, or just over 3 per game. The least number of goals per match took place in the 1988 tournament with only 23 goals coming from the 16 games.

Big Name EPL Stars The awareness and focus on the AFCON has grown in recent times. Largely this has come about due to an increase in players performing in the English Premier League week in week out.The current tournament (2017) has seen no less than 26 Premier League players representing their respective countries in Gabon. The list of big name stars includes: • Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) - Leicester City • Sadio Mane (Senegal) - Liverpool

• Eric Bailly (Ivory Coast) - Manchester United • Andre Ayew (Ghana) - West Ham United • Ahmed Elmohamady (Egypt) - Hull City • Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast) - Crystal Palace • Idrissa Gueye (Senegal) - Everton The number of games potentially means that Premier League teams could end up missing their players for upto 4 games. In real terms, more than half of Premier League teams will have players representing their home nations at this years tournament. Five teams will be without 3 of their first team squad members.

Memorable Finals Many of the recent finals have been very tight affairs, with the odd goal separating the winning team.Furthermore, many of the games ended in a 0:0 stalemate; however, the action didn’t stop there, extra time and the “dreaded” penalty shoot out decided a number of tournaments in recent times.

silver trophy was the Abdelaziz Abdallah Salem Trophy, which was named after the first CAF president. Ghana obtained the right to permanently hold the trophy after winning it 3 times. The second trophy was called the Trophy of African Unity and spanned the period from 1980 to 2000. It was awarded by the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa prior to the 1980 tournament. Cameroon won this trophy indefinitely after becoming three time champions in 2000.In 2001 a third trophy was introduced, this gold-plated cup was designed in Italy. Cameron ran out winners of the first tournament with this new trophy having won the 2002 tournament. Egypt won this trophy indefinitely after they became three-time champions in 2010; however, they were presented with a special full-size replica version.

2017 Tournament This years tournament saw Cameroon notch up a fifth ACON win, in what can only be described as a thrilling finale.

Ivory Coast took the spoils in 2015 after their 0:0 draw went to extra time. A penalty shootout was the only way to separate the two teams, with Ghana eventually losing 9:8.Zambia ran out winners in 2012, again after a goalless draw. The period of extra time wasn’t enough to separate them from Ivory Coast, with Zambia winning the game in an explosive 8-7 shootout.

Coming from behind to beat Egypt 2-1, with the winning goal coming just two minutes from time. Substitute Vincent Aboubaker who plays his club football at Turkish side Besiktas flicked the ball over oncoming defender Ali Gabr (Zamalek in the Egyptian League) and then thumped it home, past the flailing Egyptian keeper.

Both of these games were eclipsed by the 1992 final in Senegal. The final between Ivory Coast and Ghana was played out as a nil nil draw. Penalties once again had to separate the two teams with Ivory Coast running out 11-10 winners.

Arsenal striker Mohamed Elneny’s opener in the 22nd minute was the result of a lovely near post strike, Cameroon struck back on the hour mark with Nicolas Nkoulou (Lyon in the French Ligue 1) heading in powerfully.

Record Holders

The win was the first time that Cameroon had seen off an Egyptian team in the final, having lost the previous two games. Underdogs Cameroon had already upset the odds to reach the final, dispatching the likes of Senegal in the Quarterfinals, and then Ghana in the Semifinal to set up the game against Egypt.

Egypt has by far the most impressive record in the tournament, winning it no less than seven times, they have also been runners up once.Ghana have the next best record with nice final appearances, winning it on four occasions. Cameroon have also won the tournament four times, twice being runners up.

3 Different Trophy’s Throughout the history of the African Cup of Nations there has been no less than 3 different trophies up for grabs. The original

Now that’s all done and dusted we can look forward to the 2019 tournament where the holding champions get to defend the tournament in their own backyard.

The World Baseball Classic

E

very four years baseball players from around the world gather together to compete against the world’s Best but unlike the “World Series”, this truly is a global sports event. With the supposedly waning interest in the USA for their national sport The World Baseball Classic is still keenly anticipated. It starts off in Marlins Park, Miami on the 6th March 2017 when the great stadium will host first round action with competing players from some of the world’s top teams. The venues and pools for all of the qualifying rounds has now been finally released. The winners of each qualifier will advance to the 2017 final. And as you can see by the venues chosen, this exciting sporting event is truly a World event: . They are::- Blacktown Sportspark in Sydney, Estadio B Air in Mexicali, Rod Carew Stadium in Panama City and MCU in New York.

• Qualifier 1 - (February 11-14 in Sydney) Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and South Africa. • Qualifier 2 - (March 17 - 20 in Mexicali) Mexico, Czech Republic, Germany and Nicaragua. • Qualifier 3 - (March 17 0 20 in Panama City) Colombia, France, Panama and Spain. • Qualifier 4 - (September 22 - 25 in New York) Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan. The winners from these qualifying games will advance to the actual World Baseball Classic tournament. The four teams joining the other 12 seeded countries:- Canada, China, Taipei, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Korea, Holland, Puerto Rico, United States and Venezuela. The qualifiers will feature a six-game, modified double-elimination format. The composition of the pools has been determined after the venues were finalised, with consideration also given to the competitive balance of the group, existing rivalries and geographic location. The inaugural World Baseball Classic was held in 2006, and ever since has been growing in popularity. Baseball may be losing fans in the USA but interest seems to be growing elsewhere. In fact the defending champions are the Dominican Republic who will be keen to regain their crown against a fiercely competitive opposition. As it stands the WBSC rankings rate Japan as the number one seed, with the USA second and South Korea third. Israel are the rank outsiders and compete for the first time in the competition alongside Colombia who are also making their debut. The first round hosts will be, Tokyo, Seoul, Miami and Guadalajara and the games will take place between March 6th 2017 and March 12th 2017. The championship will be played at the 56,000 capacity Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

SPORT & LEISURE The World Baseball Classic is broadcasted by 6 worldwide networks and is starting to attract a global audience. Even though baseball has far more competition these days in terms of a watching audience, the Classic is helping bring fans back to the sport. It has always been passionately loved by Americans since its formative years in the 1860’s and grew into the National Sport although some Football fans might disagree, but you cannot argue with its pedigree. The first Baseball League was founded nearly half a century before any Football League was established, a fact that cannot be disputed. The love of this sport can be seen in another favourite American passion, The Silver Screen. Baseball has starred in many feature films and almost 50 full length movies have been made about the sport and the stars that have played it.Way back in the 1940’s baseball films helped millions through the post-war years to bring a feel good factor back to the average American Joe. The Pride Of The Yankees, The Stratton Story, The Babe Ruth Story and It Happens Every Spring brought audiences in their thousands flocking to the cinema. As the sport flourished so the demand increased and the 50’s featured films such as the Jackie Robinson Story with the great man himself playing the lead role, The Damn Yankees, Fear Strikes Out, the Pride Of St Louis and Angels In The Outfield all had the big stars of the day playing the lead roles. Anthony Perkins, Karl Malden, Gwen Verdon, Tab Hunter and Dan Dailey. In fact the theme of baseball as a film genre continued with Trouble With The Curve, Million Dollar Arm, The Rookie, Moneyball and Fever Pitch which were all major successes on the big screen. A host of stars featured have featured in Baseball films: Kevin Costner, Robert Redford, John Goodman, Brad Pitt, Dennis Quaid, Clint Eastwood, Jon Hamm and Robert de Niro. In fact Kevin Costner actually featured in three Baseball films:Field of Dreams, Bull Durham and For The Love Of The Game. Many of these films have a “Feel Good factor” with rags to riches stories and rookies to stars.I cannot think of any other sport in the world that has attracted the film industry in quite the way baseball has. Perhaps it is because there is something about the complex nature of the game and the love it holds with its fans, that proves a perfect platform for a decent plot and a credible story line. Maybe The World Baseball Classic will inspire another blockbuster in the years ahead. It has all the relevant components with a twist in the tale that could certainly endear it to a global audience.

By Roger

it happened again and I saw out a queen fish jumping. I saw one rod bent sideways but no line was being taken, and now the line was surfacing fast and upped jumped the fish. Being sideways he avoided the other lines and I could give him my full attention. Another jump, and he swam in front of the boat to the other side, and he went skyward again. All the action was mid to surface, this left him with a lot of power left and it showed when I got him close to the boat. He just cruised up and down the starboard side of the boat giving me the frights when he got close to the outboard engine. Finally I netted a 5kg queen fish, making my day and Khun Nom’s (my friend a Thai ex fisherman) as he got the fish and I got his photograph.

H

i Folks, I took my mate John for a day’s fishing. We started at 7.30am fishing for live bait at Naban on Koh Larn. I wanted the finger sized red sand fish (bpla si deang) and all we got were nokaling, which are a second rate bait. So we went to Hin Pra Nang a reef 2 kilometres south of Koh Krok. There we had trouble locating the bait fish due my depth sounder not working, the dunking it got the month before was the problem. It took an hour to get the ten decent sized bait that I wanted. It was ok as the high tide was at 9.45 and we wanted to fish the dropping tide at Koh Man Wichia.

The next day as I had enough bait I went out again to Koh Man Wichia. I was just about to put the second rod out when I heard line whistling through the rod rings. The first rod was in free spool to let the float move away. Then I heard the splash as a queen fish jumped. A Thai speed boat arrived and saw my rod bent over so they stopped. I saw my line rise and head for the speed boat, the fishermen on there got a good view of a 4.5 kg queen fish as he jumped just yards in front of them! Thirty minutes later I netted the fish and I got a round of applause, that’s a first! Have Fun, Roger

At 10.10am John dropped the anchor and we put out four float rods and one bottom rig. All were 20lb braid, 20lb fluorocarbon onto 30lb non-coated wire and a small stainless hook. Then we went fishing for small fish while we waited for some action. It took a while before one of the float rods bent over and line streaming off. It was a nice change to have another person onboard, as John got the big rod and I was able to start reeling in the other rods. The fish took off sideways thus clearing the other float rigs and started to move towards the front of the boat. I saw the rod tip suddenly flick upwards, just as John shouted “shit he’s off!” so I agreed with him. I told John before that sometimes the fish turns and heads straight towards you giving you the feeling he’s off. John started winding in and I saw the tip bend slightly down. “He’s still on!” and he was, John perked right up and lift the rod tip up as he wound the line onto the reel. A flash of silver below the boat and then I netted a 1.3kg barracuda (bpla sak), the first barracuda I have had in eight years. Just as we were going over the fight another rod bent over. Now it was my turn, and I said to John “I bet it’s another barra of the same size”. I was right another 1.3kg barracuda, they swim in shoals. John lost another fish later four minutes into the fight, he had turned round and caught his teeth on the fluorocarbon line. Ping! Frank and I have been trolling for horse mackerel (bpla si deang) and getting 40, 70 and 50 fish. This is down from a few years ago when the numbers would be higher and the size of fish bigger. We should be getting more fish, we have refined our tackle and have a much better idea when and where the fish we be. Scott’s guys had a heartache of a trip recently. They got only one big fish and lost two others. Captain Deang does not usually lose fish and on a tough bite the lost fish hurt. I went out three days later to Koh Man Wichia. Got there at 7.30 am, put the five rods out and waited for the fun to begin. The wind picked up from the west and pushed the boat some 20 metres eastwards so I upped anchor and compensated for the wind. By 1 pm I started to prepare the boat for going home when a big splash occurred. I did not hear any of the rods going so I thought it was a ray. Then

Sailing On The Seven Seas....

W

ell at least one anyway, as the launch of the new - long anticipated - ferry across the Gulf of Thailand took to the open waters last month. That's right, the Pattaya to Hua Hin ferry service launched on the 12th of January to a fan fare of Thai nationals, farangs and tourists alike, taking full advantage of the free voyages offered up in the first weeks of the service. I for one was a lucky punter who happened to fall upon the knowledge of this amazing give away and decided it would be an adventure. Plus being a Brit living here, then something for free is just the ticket, if you catch my drift? And plain sailing it was. Upon arrival to the port there was little hassle in collecting one’s ticket from the ferry terminal, located on the right just before the port itself as you pass from the end of walking street. This is where all of you wishing to use this service will be able to purchase your tickets. Prices for passage one way are said to be starting at a more than reasonable 1,200 Baht (yet to be confirmed). The terminal staff were helpful and extremely well organised and after a leisurely stroll down the pier accompanied by amazing views of Pattaya you arrive at the mooring of the ship. The process of boarding is also quite a breeze. Just before docking there is the usual security - after one presents their ticket – as you would expect at an air terminal; the scanning of bags in the x-ray machine, a meander through a metal detector and then, if you are like me, a final sweep with the hand held to ensure you're all clear to board. Then upon passing the reasonable security levels lending one piece of mind that there are no untowards on board , the entrance into the ship is over a solid gangway reinforcing your confidence for the journey ahead. The airline-esque experience doesn't end there either. Once on board (if you arrive early), you can take advantage of the VIP seating located on the upper deck which easily harks to the comforts of flight, or premium tickets on any railway in Europe. I suspect that will differ when the tickets are paid for, but fear not, as the standard carriage are just as soft and inviting, with plenty of room for the old pegs. The ride was smooth although I believe the tides were in our favour on the way out, as the return journey was somewhat choppy. Not that, that swayed me in anyway personally, as I thoroughly enjoyed the return passage a lot more for this reason and there didn't seem to be anyone else on board suffering from the mild toing and froing. Not long after the old lady takes to open ocean, the efficient and extremely friendly staff on board roll out some trollies and dish out a complimentary bottle of water to keep you refreshed. That, however, is the sum-total of the catering on board - so if your tastes differ then the advice is to take something with you - although there are restrictions against the usual suspects if you catch my meaning. Also, for those of you who like a bit of fresh air, or the kind that is a little murky in its nature, you'll be advised that there is no outdoor space for one to retreat to. To entertain the passengers along the way, there is a wonderful selection of familiar songs both in English and Thai played softly across the internal speaker system, which is not intrusive in anyway and does allow for a one to doze off (as I can vouch for), if they so wish. Also, if the views across the open stretches of water are not enough to satisfy the eyes, then you'll be fortunate to note a few signatures of the ship’s history. There are some tell-tale signs of its previous life as a regular along coast of Hong Kong which add a certain warmth to the vessel, certainly if you’re a bit nostalgic like me .That being said, the refurbishment both outside and in has certainly brought the ship into keeping with the modern age and makes for dreamy bob across to your final destination. The travel time was close to 2 hours, which is a far cry shorter than anything between 5 &6 when travelling in vehicles of the wheeled variety. However if you are thinking about a return on the same day, once you arrive in the port at Hua Hin the boarding to make headway back begins almost immediately after the departies have left the ships inners. At best you'll have around 40 minutes to take in the sights before being ushered back on board to make your way home and with so much on offer in the beautiful Royal province of Hua Hin, it would be a shame not to at least spend one night across the bay of this fair land. I for one, intend to be plotting some dates in my calendar to return across the gulf fairly shortly, as it was such a pleasurable experience. Having journeyed both by car and bus to the region before there is no doubt in my mind that this will be my preferred weapon of choice.

THAI RACING YEAR GETS UNDERWAY IN STYLE

T

he new racing year got off very early as the Asian Le Mans Series arrived in Thailand at the beginning of last month for the third round of its 2016-17 season. This was the second time the ‘Le Mans’ branded championship had come here after an inaugural visit almost exactly one year ago and in the meantime it had grown bigger, better and more competitive. Blending ‘prototype’ and ‘GT’ style cars together seems to be proving a winning formula and more than two dozen cars arrived in the North East to contest the ‘4 Hours of Buriram’. There was a very ‘local’ connection on the grid in the shape of Team NZ Motorsport who competed in Thailand Super Series during the Buriram round last year with regulars Graeme Dowsett and John Curran who arrived with driver and car knowledge of the track while they bolstered the lineup by drafting in Thai driver Paul Kanjanapas. The only hiccup to their efforts in the run up to the weekend came in the shape of a dose of food poisoning for Graeme on the Friday evening which left qualifying duties in the hands of John. However he responded superbly to slap the Porsche on P1 in the ‘GT Cup’ category. When the lights went green the team’s game plan was really to stay clear of trouble, especially with all the LMP2, LMP3 and GT3 category cars on the track that would each be lapping at a much quicker pace than would be the case in GT Cup. John took the first stint, the Irishman making a clean start and settling in before handing over to Graeme for a short second stint. Paul took the middle shift and then it was back to the regular duo to close down the final segment of the race. With everything running like clockwork the win became a formality. The drivers were delighted afterwards. “It was a good race, the mechanics did an excellent job with our pit stops,” said Graeme afterwards. “It was hot on track; I didn’t have a cool suit for the

first stint, so it felt a bit hot, especially as I was still getting over food poisoning. But other than that the race ran pretty much like clockwork, good times from all the drivers, so it was good.” Paul, who was making a one off appearance with the team, brought a lot of local circuit knowledge with him and got the job done during the middle stint. “It was a fantastic experience and Team NZ did a very good job in preparing the car, it ran absolutely trouble free for the whole weekend. I think we had a lot of fun on and off the track and I think the organisers’ did a very good job I also saw a lot of great drivers and good cars out there. So it was a lot of fun and it was also a very good experience for me to participate in this series.”

‘JACKIE CHAN’ MAKES HIS MARK In the race at the front (the LMP2 class), victory after 154 laps of racing went to the Jackie Chan DC Racing Nissan-Oreca driven by Ho-Pin Tung, Thomas Laurent and Gustavo Menezes. It was in the end a pretty comfortable win for the team named after the legendary Hong Kong martial arts movie actor – the car was plastered in adverts for his latest movie – and they sped away and although their advantage was wiped out by an early Safety Car they never looked threatened and in the end took the checkered flag with a comfortable 1 minute and 22 seconds in hand. The Algarve Pro Racing Ligier’s took the second and third spots on the LMP2 podium. In the LMP3 class there was a first series win for the ARC Bratislava Ginetta of Darren Burke, Miro Konopka and Mike Simpson. In fact the team made it a 1-2 finish in their yellow cars as the sister machine followed them across the line just a second adrift and there was extra emphasis to that result as it was Ginetta’s first win in the Asian Le Mans Series. Meanwhile Ferrari enjoyed a lockout of the podium in the GT class with victory going to the DH Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 of Rino Mastronardi, Alex Riberas and Olivier Berreta, Team BBT’s similar car came home second while DH Racing’s sister machine, which actually won the race ‘on the road’ but was hit with a time penalty post race, wrapped up the top three finishers.

LEARNING CURVE FOR THAI PROTOTYPE DEBUTANTS

Meanwhile there was more Thai interest on the grid as Tira Sosothikul and Medhapan Sundaradeja were making their debut in Asian Le Mans Series in a CN class Ligier JS53. The two drivers had a lot of work to do to get up to speed in what was their first race in a ‘CN’ class prototype car as well as this being a highly professional series. But they knuckled down and steadily improved their lap times as they got more and more used to car, track and series. Their race was cut short early through no fault of their own but they can reflect on a job well done in tough circumstances, certainly they were able to fit in nicely at this professional level.

Top Of The Gulf Regatta- Ocean Marina Billed as “Asia's largest multi-class regatta”, the 2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina is now open for entries. PATTAYA, Thailand – The 13th edition of the multi award-winning Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina is open for entries. To be held 4th to 8th May, 2017 at Southeast Asia's largest marina, Ocean Marina, Top of the Gulf Regatta regularly attracts more than 250 boats and since opening for entries late last year organisers have received strong interest and early sign-ups. “We opened for entries in mid-December last year and have had a lot of early enquiries for the 2017 Top of the Gulf Regatta. Already the one-design Platu class has 11 confirmed teams with crews coming from more than 10 countries, and we're expecting a larger-than-normal dinghy fleet this year due to the Thailand Optimist National Championships being the last junior sailing event before the Optimist World Championships in July at Royal Varuna Yacht Club,” said Mr. William Gasson, Co-Chairman, Top of the Gulf Regatta Organising Committee. “In addition to the IRC, Cruising and multihull classes, we have also introduced an option for the regional TP52 fleet and similar type boats to have their own dedicated class and courses,” added Gasson.

GROWING THE CHARTER FLEET

In addition to catering to the current fleets, organisers see a growing trend of international sailors wishing to charter boats for the regatta. Targeting key sailing populations in the Austral-asian region and working with charter operators, organisers have created a charter section on the event website that promotes charter boats available for the regatta. “There are many sailors around the region and especially in Australia that are interested to race at the regatta if suitable boats are available for charter. Recognising this, we have developed a dedicated charter section on the regatta website and are working with charter operators to market a selection of boats from dinghies upto IRC class and multihulls,” added Gasson. Boats such as Baby Tonga (Beneteau First 53), Resolution of Whitby (Beneteau 523 Oceanis), PH Plus+ (Elliot 46) and the famous Cassidy 55 Australian Maid, as well as Platus and a selection of multihulls and dinghies, are available for charter.

2017 CLASSES

Three IRC classes are planned, as well as the option for a “Class 0” for TP52 and similar type yachts. These will be complemented by a Cruising class, the popular onedesign Platu class who will be competing for the prestigious Coronation Cup, and an Ocean Multihulls class. The dinghy fleet will be split into two classes – Single-Handed Monohull Dinghy and Double-Handed Monohull Dinghy, with further divisional splits possible – and there are options for beach catamaran classes also.

MOTOR & MARINE Sailors in the Optimist class will be competing for the Thailand Optimist National Championships – Thailand's top junior sailing competition – which is expected to see a fleet of 150+ youth sailors from around the world competing this year. Also returning for the second year will be the IOM Class RC Yachts – a class of radio-controlled yachts which will race just outside the marina and which is proving to be a popular class across the region. This 13th edition of the Top of the Gulf Regatta will once again take place at Ocean Marina Yacht Club on the shores of Na Jomtien Beach. It is a festival of fun both on and off the water, and the the regatta welcomes a diverse range of boats. Incorporated in the Regatta is the Thailand Optimist National Championships, started in 1976 by the Yacht Racing Association to encourage and train young Thai sailors through competition in international sailing events The Thailand Optimist National Championships now attracts over 120 junior sailors from around the world each year. Established in 1996 with 24 entries, the first Coronation Cup was held on the anniversary of the late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand's Coronation date, 5th May 1950 and from there, the one-design Platu Coronation Cup was born. The Coronation Cup is incorporated into the Top of the Gulf Regatta and is sailed as part of the regatta under the International Platu Class Rules. In fact Ocean Marina Yacht Club is home to the largest Platu fleet in Asia and is host to the four event annual Platu series in Thailand of which the Coronation Cup is the pinnacle event. The Platu was brought to Thailand by a group of businessmen who commissioned Bruce Farr to design an economically-priced high performance boat suitable for Thailand's prevailing conditions. This year’s event will continue to showcase the beauty and marine facilities of Pattaya and the Gulf of Thailand which are endless. Ocean Marina is southeast Asia’s largest marina at the heart of the region and an ideal base from which to explore whilst providing a safe and secure home for all regatta yachts. Surrounded as it is by mountains, beaches, and splendid seascapes it is still within easy distance from the lively seaside resort of Pattaya and its many tourist attractions, golf courses, shopping and entertainment venues. The Ocean Marina Complex includes a boutique hotel of 51 deluxe bedrooms all with a nautical theme, a marina-front restaurant, meeting and banquet rooms, a grand sports complex and comfortable bars to relax in after an enjoyable day’s sailing.Visitors to Ocean Marina or residents from the two towers of luxury accommodation, can have access to all the activities available, including: yacht charters, the sailing club, sunset cruises, island hopping, squid hunting, scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing classes and a captain and cabin crew training program. The Top of the Gulf Regatta 2017 is eagerly anticipated by the whole of Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard. The influx of competitors and spectators is widely appreciated by all and welcomed with open arms. The Top Of The Gulf Regatta is one of the top events to visit whilst bringing international acclaim to the city.

How to Protect

Yourself from an Investment Scam T

here's nothing wrong with putting your money to work for you. Investments can be the difference between making ends meet, and making a mint but remember your mom's advice: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The Classic: Pyramid Scheme

Many pyramid schemes come across as multi-level marketing opportunities. Investors pay fees to join and then make money from direct sales. Backers also get a cut of profits from folks they've recruited to the program. But pyramid organizers need this new money to pay off earlier investors, and often, the scheme collapses under its own weight. There's not enough money to make payoffs. Participants see investments and returns disappear.Pyramid schemes often spread through social media, websites, online ads, and group pitches. Be alert to these warning signs. • You're told you'll make a lot of money quickly, but you won't have to put in much effort. • You have to pay a fee to join, and your main role is getting others to sign up. • Any product that's sold has little value outside the scheme. • You can't find evidence, such as professionally audited financial statements, of sales profits. Money comes from recruitment. • Profits come from within the program. Your earnings depend upon other participants, not on outside sales. Lots of money, little work: this is exactly what your mother was talking about.

Risky Business: Energy Scams

Legitimate investment opportunities in oil and gas development come with no guarantees. They need lots of money and time, and proceeds are uncertain. Developers might drill and drill with little return for their efforts. Investors can lose everything they put in. And that's with authentic energy exploration. If the whole purpose is to separate you from your money, participants don't stand a chance. So how do you separate real energy investment deals from scams? Be on the lookout for these warning signs. • Company offices are in one state, drilling is in another, and investors don't live in either. You can't easily visit the corporation or well site. If fraud is suspected, the geographic range creates a nightmare for law enforcement investigators. • You receive a surprise email or phone call. You don't hear a lot of facts, just tremendous pressure to commit. You're warned that if you don't immediately jump in, you'll miss out. Real energy companies don't fish around for investors. • Little risk, high returns: Is that what you've been promised? Run away, because that's not how it really works in the energy business. • • Some get-rich-quick scams use current events as lures. If high gas and oil prices are currently in the news, investors might be convinced the time is right. But remember well development is a long process. Energy development is a business, not a mystery. All aspects should be open and aboveboard.

I'm Just Like You: Affinity Sham

48 48

Affinity fraud targets participants based on a specific characteristic, such as age, religious affiliation, or ethnicity. Schemers present themselves as members of

the same group in order to create an immediate relationship. Some hustlers are so good they enlist recognized leaders of the community. Unfortunately, these respected notables wind up falling prey to the scam — and unintentionally drawing others in. You might feel a connection to the individual trying to get you to invest, but that's what these con artists count on. Be wary. • Don't invest just because you have an association with the promoter — even if it's someone you trust. That person may have been duped. Do outside research. If that's discouraged, say no. Real investments hold up against scrutiny. • Avoid online opportunities that show up in chat groups, bulletin boards, or websites exclusive to your group. The Internet is a quick and easy way to target a specific audience. • Steer clear of any investment that guarantees low risk and high returns. The two just don't go together. Valid deals don't promise them. The bottom line here — Remember your mother. When it comes to changing your socks, eating your vegetables, and avoiding fraud, she knows best.
