| COVER STORY
By Matias Berra
Stay out of trouble and make sure you have a great lawyer in Thailand: Like it or not, if you have lived in Thailand (especially in sin city Pattaya!) you know having a good trustworthy lawyer on quick-dial is always a great way to stay away from trouble. This week I got to see and talk to one of the city's most respected and successful law offices: Pattaya Solicitors DMC inter law. For the past 10 years Pattaya solicitors have helped thousands of people with their legal issues in the Kingdom. DCM Inter law's head attorney, Khun Chantima Watcharapongwanith, explained to me it's their superior knowledge in Thai Law that helps them provide the level of service and satisfaction they do.
“...it's their superior knowledge in Thai Law that helps them provide the level of service and satisfaction they do.” As you can appreciate from the following list, DCM’s expertise does indeed spread across the board, making them a great asset in solving a wide range of legal problems, lets take a closer look at each of these areas of practice:
66
• Visa & Immigration: Visas for Thailand range from the sixty-day tourist visa, the yearly Non-Immigrant visa, to permanent residency status. They can assist you in obtaining any of them • Work Permits: Get assistance obtaining all the right documentation delivered to the right person at the labor office. DMC will ensure getting your work permit is a smooth and easy procedure. • Criminal Law: Don't let a bad brush with the law ruin your stay in the Kingdom. Thai criminal law is nothing like what you would experience at home, Pattaya Solicitors can be your local expert and can assist in providing a speedy resolution to most problems.

Give yourself some peace of mind and allow DMC to assist you in drafting the perfect Last Will and testament. • Thai Property Law: Purchasing property in Thailand can be tricky, though technically foreigners are not allowed to own land, there are multiple ways . With Pattaya Solicitors’ help you can ensure the process is made as easy as possible. • Divorce & Family Law: Separation can be one of the most traumatic events in anyone's life. DCM's sole objective is to make the process as quick and painless as possible so all parties involved can move forward with their lives • Civil Law & Litigation: For any type of legal issue involving injury, negligence, fraud and damage compensation. The Mission:
The Rolling Live 2:
I must confess this week was a rather pleasant one. Given this month's Pattaya Trader's theme: “Night Life & Entertainment”,I suddenly found myself in charge of a peculiar task. My monthly mission now involved a research task- I was to walk the crowded sidewalks of Walking street looking for the top Rock and Roll Bars our lovely Sin City has to offer...
Location: On Walking Street right at the Soi 16 intersection Price-Range: 95 THB for local bottled beers, 200 for imported ones like Corona
Of-course I had no choice but to take this task head on and do exactly what had to be done: One beer at a time, I was going to bar hop from bar to bar until I had the ultimate list of the top venues that have live band performances - after all, what would Pattaya be without all it's Rock n Roll? To ensure my research would be as loyal as possible to the infamous “ Rock Attitude” I decided to begin the walk the only way a real Rock and Roller would - backwards!. So, making my way from the end of walking street (by Bali Hi pier that is) I begun what would turn out to be another amazing night filled with intoxicating riffs, catchy vocals and the right amount of beers. Here are some of the facts uncovered...
“To ensure my research would be as loyal as possible to the infamous rock attitude we all love, I decided to begin the walk the only way Rock 'n' Roll would: Backwards.” Utopia Rock-House, an unexpected blast from the past : Location: Almost at the end of walking street, about 50 meters past Soi 16 on the left hand side if you are walking towards Bali Hi Pier. Price-Range: Bottled beers go for 110 THB, draught Singha is 90 THB per glass and you can get bottles of spirits starting at 800 THB for Sang-Som, the Black Label bottle will cost you 2000 THB to open ! Stepping into the Rock House of Pattaya certainly took on an unexpected turn when I noticed the guys playing here are the same band members that used to make up the Climax Band! They were a really good band that used to play at the Climax Bar in Walking Street some 10 years ago when I was a kid my friend and I would get drunk and sing along to their Green Day covers every single weekend. You can imagine my surprise (and excitement) to find them still making a living out of their Rocking Ways. Things were different however: they have a new drummer (later I found out their awesome drummer Ricky has sadly passed away last year), an extra man in charge of keyboards and a scrawny looking man with the voice of an angel. Certainly a recommendable show, both the main guitar player with his speed solos and catchy riffs (not only the kind that resembles Jimmy Hendrix’s style of playing - very similar to the “Guitar GOD's” unique ways) coupled with the singer’s amazing range and harmonious power - all guaranteed a pretty inspiring performance.

Another iconic rock and roll bar at “Walking”, the venue has an open bar style with no air-con, certainly a lot roomier than Utopia Rock House and with a slightly different style.. The music played at the bar varies depending on the band (they have 2 rotating groups) which will always play Rock and Roll music, but the second band (which comes on at around 11 pm) focuses more on newer, more 'hip' rock songs and experimental sounds (they even performed a Shakira song in a “Metal style” while I was there) the other band, which generally starts playing at around 8-9 PM will mainly do metal and old-school classic rock and roll. I was rather surprised to have spotted a few younger couples at this bar including some Russian backpackers and a couple of British expat, which again, I think, reflects the band's willingness to play more current songs rather than focus only on the classic aspect of Rock 'n' Roll .
Torus: Location: Right Across from Rolling Bar 2 which is located \ at the intersection of Walking Street and Soi 16 Price-Range: Slightly more expensive than the other places, expect to pay 160THB for all bottle beers, their SangSom bottles start at 700 THB In all fairness, I probably wouldn't call this venue a rock bar since their performances focuses on other music genres ranging from Latin rhythms to the latest pop hits. Why mention them in this article you wonder? Well it's simple: They are quite good! The band has 6 members including 2 male rappers/singers, a very powerful female voice, percussion, keyboards and guitars - which gives them quite a range regarding the songs they can play, If you like live performances but don't feel like some oldschool Rock and Roll, you should definitely come check this bar out. The fancier decorations and air-conditioned room all go to make it a much better option when having to entertain a female counterpart.

Apart from the friendly hostesses who will stop at nothing to ensure you are kept happily intoxicated, I should mention that there is a huge CD collection that gives this bar an attractive perspective. By being polite you will quickly notice that you are given access to this great collection of tunes as you can sit back, relax and request any of your old-time favorite songs. The beers are cold, the high-quality sound system loud and you have the choice of whichever song you want to be played next , what else do you need?
The Blues Factory:
Blue Sky 3: Location: Right at the corner of Walking and the begginging of soi BJ. Price: Bottle beers are 95 THB I'm not exactly sure if it was the timing, but based on the few songs I saw the band perform I can tell you this was the Metal venue of the evening. Before I could order my first beer “The Ace of Spades” from Motor-Head kick-started the crowd into a loud roar of cheers. Both the band and the singer perfectly compliment each-other with powerful spot-on vocals and face-melting guitar skills. The musical equipment used at this bar seemed to be slightly superior to the other bars as their guitars and bass lines seemed to be that much clearer. I would absolutely recommend this bar for any Heavy Metal fan.
Abbe's Bar: Location: On Walking Street, opposite Blue Sky 3 and the entrance to soi BJ Price-Range: You can have bottled beers for 95 THB and the Sang-Som glasses will cost you no more than 100 THB. So quite the standard Walking Street prices we are all used to ! Ok, this bar might not have a live band but they certainly keep the Rock and Roll blasting all night, so they really do deserve a mention ! Quite an old feature on Walking, I used to start my teenage drinking sessions in this same bar every single Friday, my teen years are certainly past, but Abby's bar remains as iconic as always.
www.pattayatrader.com
Location: Price: Bottle beers are 110 THB What can I tell you? Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin has been spotted in here checking out Lam Morrison's amazing guitar performances. If it's good enough for Jimmy, it's certainly good for me! I will warn you that I have heard Lam doesn't play here any longer (which would certainly devalue this venue) and the fact he wasn't there when I went does seem to support this. But hey! Give it a try during the weekend, you might get lucky and see the man himself on stage.
The Stone House: So I reach the end of my journey at the “beginning of Walking street” !. Now, it might have been because I got to this bar at around midnight, but the music styles that were being played didn't impress me that much. From popular Issan style songs to corny 80's hits, there just wasn’t enough Rock and Roll and challenging guitar solos for me to recommend this bar to music lovers. That said, if you are looking for some female attention this is the place. After all, this was the busiest bar of all the bars I visited on the night, and though the music did not per say fulfill my Rock n Roll needs, the atmosphere in this huge venue was indeed festive and a good place to end my evening!

Flyboard Pattaya Fly like a bird, dive like a dolphin... What did you say you were doing this weekend? So how about taking a bit of brake from Pattaya's standard attractions and take off for a little flight above the sea? Yup, no jokes here, I'm quite sure you have seen these machines before: They pretty much consist of a board connected to a jet-ski which will allow you to propulse yourself up to 7 meters above the water. There are two ways to operate this pretty awesome machine, one way is totally solo. The rider will have the controls and be able to propel themselves by controlling the flow of water coming out of the jet ski. This is for advanced flyboarders only. Beginners will need to get used to the board while the coach controls the water output, so don’t worry! You will be firmly attached to your board and the only thing you have to worry about is maintaining your balance.
“...someone noticed this invention would be perfect for sin city; and guess what? They were absolutely right ” This revolutionary new attraction has only been around since 2012, luckily for us though, someone noticed this invention would be perfect for sin city; and guess what? They were absolutely right, we love these things! I have tried them myself, so I can definitely tell you they aren’t as hard to control as you might think. I mean, you certainly won’t be

Nan and Phrae, Cultured Pearls of the North “But where are they?” is the first response you get to most mentions of Nan or Phrae, two Thai gems of the north, up county and off most tour maps. The short answer is head 560 kilometres straight up the map from the Big Mango and you’ll hit Phrae. Take a breather and Nan is another 130 km further northeast, just short of Lao. But why go there? Succinctly, to see Thailand-of-the-Thais: two historic towns of Lanna temples, teak mansions and good manners. Up-to-date places that haven’t lost their dignity to mall-sprawl and double-pricing for foreigners. Phrae, Thailand’s former teak logging capital, still has some 20 beautiful wooden mansions, remnants of a century ago when it was home to the Bombay Burmah Trading Co, the East Asiatic Co and Louis T. Leonowens, son of the controversial Anna Leonowens of The King and I fame. Take a samlor cycle rickshaw tour around town to see a few of these filigreed, colonial darlings. The best-known mansion, Khum Chao Luang, belonged to Phrae’s last independent ruler, who fled in 1902. His two-storey, Italianate palace, built in 1892, is now a museum where you can see the household fineries of the governor and his family, but beneath its polished teak floor squats a grim past. “Walk backwards into the cellar, so you can come out safely again,” says our local guide, with a grin that’s more a grimace. She adds, “And ask permission from the ghost before you take photo inside.” The cellar was a prison where the feudal lord once kept slaves and other miscreants confined in darkness, awaiting torture or eternity. We see small panels in the ceiling through which food

letting elephants play terminal soccer with it.
Up to 300 prisoners might have died here. Given Thais’ attraction/repulsion relationship with ghosts, people inevitably whisper about spooks in the cellar. To reinforce the morbid fascination, a gallery there features surprisingly frank illustrations of good, old-time Thai ways of execution: garrotte, skull crush, chin hook to the brain, coffin in the sun and that sporting, arms-length doozy, squeezing a prisoner inside a large rattan ball and then
That said, there is a much lighter side to Phrae. On our rickshaw ride to admire its temples and mansions of more sunny provenance — such as Vichairacha House — we pass a police station where a sign advertises online assistance via the wonderfully titled website, www.phraecop.com. Not actually praying for a cop, I consult it, only to learn that “This domain name has already expired.” slow spin around the sights, including Nan’s own share of teak mansions. During our tour the guide announces that Nan has been declared “the 137th safest city in the world.” Something lost in translation? Or, given the world’s vast number of cities, perhaps an enviable title?
“The northern language they talk sounds so sweet and soft. I love to hear it. And smelling the grilled chicken and hot sticky rice in bamboo for breakfast ...” My Thai friend Sam trails off nostalgically as she recalls a youthful journey to this region which still seems to embody the best of rural Thailand: prosperity without bling vanity, a rich Lanna past, uncluttered streets, polite people and temple visits minus the tour coach crush.
Accommodation. Phrae: Huern Na Na, www.huernnana.com. Nan: Pukha Nanfa Hotel, www.pukhananfahotel.co.th Getting there. Nok Air flies to both Phrae Nan from Bangkok Don Mueang, www.nokair.com. Air-conditioned coaches depart from Bangkok’s Mo Chit terminal.
If Nan is a heaven for history buffs, it’s possibly hell for party animals. No flash-bang nightlife here, but who cares? Instead you can dine on the banks of the Nan River, beneath the stars, on khao soy ghai plus banana flower salad, crisp-fried freshwater fish and much more. Six of us do, drinking well and eating even better, all for under a thousand baht. There are 475 temples in Nan province, so you’re guaranteed to bump into few in the capital. At Wat Suantan local schoolkids, training to be guides, give us a breathless singsong recitation about the temple and its contents. No matter that it’s all in Thai, it’s still a charming initiative. Wat Phumin, built in 1569, is Nan’s signature icon. Its central golden Buddha faces in four directions but the real fascination is its vivid murals that depict scenes from the lives of the Buddha, plus secular Nan life in transition in the late 19th century, including images of foreign sailing ships and costumes. White-water rafting is big in Nan during June and July but instead we decide to head to a famous sweet shop called Khong Wan Pa Nim where the black sticky rice with ice-cream, sago and coconut milk is, I swear, the best in the Kingdom. Nan is both modern and ancient. Established in 1282 it was long the capital of an independent kingdom that, located midway between Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang, absorbed the cultures of both over hundreds of years. You can still spot the old city walls, especially if you hop on the town’s tourist tram for a

More of a Good Thing One of the great advantages of residing here in Pattaya is the never ending building boom that’s been on, and then off again over the past decade. Most of us are well aware that the majority of that construction is aimed at creating opulent luxury villas, new housing estates, high-end and affordable condominium complexes, and apartment blocks for those who are less affluent. By now most of you are probably loudly proclaiming, “Hold on, what’s this idiot going on about! Doesn’t he know that the proliferation of construction only adds to the city’s already heavy traffic, and further drains the overstretched water and electricity resources of Pattaya? What advantage can there possibly be in respect to the rise in noise pollution, and the incessant dust that’s stirred up and spread throughout each neighborhood where building is at this time taking place?” True, there is much to criticize when a multi story condominium project is slowly making its way towards the heavens floor by floor and brick by brick. Believe me, I’m no fan of the noise and nuisance that goes hand in hand with new construction, but what I am a fan of is its aftermath. You see, the rapid growth not only benefits the local construction industry and building supply companies, but in the long term, virtually every local business stands to gain from any new property development. That’s because once the recently erected accommodations have been labeled as “sold” or “rented”; the residents residing within will then need every conceivable type of service and product that are essential, needed or desired by the inhabitants. For example take the restaurant industry in Pattaya City, with the multitude of luxury villas, private homes, up-scale condominiums, modest shophouses, serviced apartment complexes, high-end hotels, resorts, and other forms of accommodations that are either in various stages of completion or that have already reached fruition, each will undoubtedly attract a multitude of eating establishments to satiate the dwellers need for nourishment. In a city that’s already well known for being the home to many cuisines of the world, the construction boon will provide even more mouth watering bistros, eateries and cafes, which will only add to Pattaya’s rich culinary reputation. Despite the fact that Pattaya can already boast of having restaurants serving such diverse fare as Russian, Scandinavian, German, Belgian, French, English, Irish, Spanish, Greek, Turkish Arabic, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian, American, Mexican, and Cuban among others, I see nothing wrong with a few new additions to Pattaya’s global menu. Let’s face it; with road traffic in its current state, wouldn’t you rather stroll around the corner than drive across town to enjoy Korean barbeque or Japanese sushi? In other word when it comes to matters of mastication in regard to options concerning what to consume, you don’t have to be an epicurean or gourmand to know that less is most definitely not more. Like most consumers of victuals, I have my own preferences, which are many and varied, as to what taste’s good.
Street Food
Personally, I gravitate toward Thai street food because, it’s flavorful, fresh, filling, cooked on the spot (usually) and easy on the pocket book. Generally within a few meters of any type of accommodation a walker will encounter stalls hawking various variations of Thailand’s beloved noodle soup. Around the corner there will undoubtedly be a stir fry shop or two, in which a hungry human can order fried rice, fried noodles, boiled chicken and rice, spicy pork and rice, and numerous other Thai rice based specialties. Next door may be an Issarn eatery that specializes in spicy papaya salad, different species of barbecued fish and frogs, sticky rice, and grilled bits of chicken and pork. Within thirty meters north and south of my abode there are no less than a dozen street food stalls and shops from which to choose

from. If I include east and west, then that number doubles, throw in the four or five sit down restaurants, the dozen or so roving food carts that pass by daily and the microwaved fare and snacks to be had at the six 7/11s and Family Marts within walking distance, there really is no shortage of edifices in which to eat or purchase edible matter.
Fast Food
Fast food has a strong gravitational pull for both tourists and locals who are on the go. Nearby all of the city’s main shopping areas and tourist haunts it seems as if you’re never more than a few steps away from a McDonalds, Burger King or Kentucky Fried Chicken – a haven for all who fear the outcome of consuming the foreign fare sold by the street vendors. Pattaya also has a plethora of pizza places in which one can dine in or have it delivered to one’s doorstep. From Pizza Hut to Pizza Company to New York Pizza House (the best in my opinion) to Nick the Pizza and in just about any one of the city’s numerous Italian restaurants a slice or a whole pie can easily be obtainable via your own two feet or by punching a few keys on your mobile phone. Deli style sandwiches, soups, as well as salads can be found at Subway and Deli France Restaurants scattered across the city. If you keep your eyes peeled whilst wandering the sois, you’ll also notice a number of burger shacks, fixed and mobile doner kebab shops, fresh fruit vendors and a diverse array of other simple snacks, mains, and desserts designed to assuage one’s hunger and please one’s pallet.
International Food
If you’re from abroad and just want to remember what home tastes like, then Pattaya’s your city. Pub grub comprised of bangers and mash, full English breakfast, Sheppard’s pie or that very British staple of fish and chips can be found at Punch and Judy Pub, The Pig and Whistle, Queen Victoria’s Inn and the Sportsman Bar to name a few. Italian favorites in the form of pasta like lasagna, spaghetti, and ravioli with a multitude of delicious sauces, seafood and meat specialties, as well as authentic pizzas can be found in every neighborhood. Some of the best are Pizza Pizza, whose pizza is, well … among the best,\. Great Mexican food, which also happens to be one of my favorites, is a bit trickier to find. But it can be had at Tequila Reef and at Mike’s Tex-Mex Restaurants. If you’ve never eaten Mexican, I recommend rolled tacos or taquitos at either place or one of the huge burritos from Tequila Reef. Thanks to the internet, whether it’s Indian, Indonesian or Irish, the location of where the culinary delight of just about any nation is served is never more than a few keystrokes away.
Considering I’ve neglected to mention the copious buffets and the whole home delivery thing, whether it’s five stars or no stars, eaters of every ilk can thank Pattaya’s thriving property industry for the broad range of cuisines that are now within easy reach. Whether diners fancy the flavor of their native country or opt for the exotic taste of the Land of Smiles, many of the establishments that devote themselves to the preparation, sales and serving of all things edible most likely wouldn’t be here if it were not for Pattaya’s noisy, dusty and very aggressive property development program.
Thai Food
If you can’t be tempted by Thailand’s street food, perhaps one of Pattaya’s countless Thai style sit down restaurants, all of which offer up their own version of Siam’s signature spicy, salty, sour, and sweet cuisine, can lure you in. Everything from fresh seafood, to creamy curries, to savory stir-fries, to the ever so spicy salads, and mouth watering barbeque can be had in the restaurants that range from tiny street-side stalls to lavish five star affairs. Nang Nual, A Taste of Thailand, and Pattaya Seafood are three of Pattaya’s venerable favorites.
Five Star Food
The Horizon Restaurant on the 34th floor of the Pattaya Hilton is where you can experience “fine dining at its best”, because it’s claimed that the food served here is as good if not better than the view ! Another top drawer restaurant in the vicinity is the Mantra at the Amari Hotel whee there is a very fine brunch to be enjoyed every Sunday.

THEPPRASIT NIGHT BAZAAR
his time I’m not writing about Pattaya’s most popular weekend market, the one in Thepprasit road – by the Outlet Mall. I have, after all mentioned it many times before as a favourite haunt for picking up bargains, cheap food, and all manner of inexpensive extras. No, the location spotlight for this issue is just across the road and slightly further towards the Sukhumvit road. It is the “Thepprasit Night Bazaar” and you will spot the entrance by its “Universal studios style” large Transformer model just inside the arch.
This market , as opposed to its larger brother across the road, is a semi-permanent fixture, combining actual shops with more makeshift stalls. Actually laid out as a complex on two floors, when you first walk through the arch you will see to your left an extensive food area with noodle stalls, fruit juice and the obligatory smoothie offerings, skewers, grills and (the night I visited) even a Suckling pig given free to all comers. There is a real feeling of camaraderie here from the assembled sellers. Those sitting outside their shops (yes there are a couple of shops in this area) taking a break from the monotony of low season and a lack of tourists, bonding together with their competitiors in their hope of increasing the footfall for the whole area. They were only too pleased to see some curious “Farangs” curiously exploring the market and were they were quick to point out the free food on offer and smile at us without hawking for sales. The stage just beyond the food stalls was empty although there have been many bands and even ladyboy shows offered as free entertainment for the visiting shopper. Walking through the main selling area had “much of a muchness” about it. As can be found around most of Pattaya’s markets there were tourist typical take home products such as bags of teas, coffee, coconut oil, aloe vera, tooth powder and the like. Underwear stalls – that still don’t seem to really be taking on board the sizes needed for the average overseas traveler to Thailand! Electrical goods – mostly for the primping of hair, T shirts, T shirt like clothes and make up –and some better than usual shoe stalls. But travel further down the aisles and there are even more interesting treasures to be found. Furniture and antique stalls with mainly Chinese or Japanese inspired offerings had some interesting china, art, vases and the like, and the handmade leathers, shoes and ornaments stalls interesting pieces to take home. Clocks, pictures, umbrella pots (we are after all coming into rainy season) and even piebald cow skins all available to the intrepid shopper willing to go further and further down the aisles where to be honest the temperature and humidity did worsen. That said it is not the most uncomfortable market to walk though as it does not have the dusty dirty ground of say the Jomtien Night market. After all it is paved and this can make a big difference to your level of comfort when you are wearing say flip flops or open toed sandals. Also when you really have had enough and need a break from it all you can go upstairs to their very own “Beer and Wine Garden” This is really just some seating on the roof but does have a bar, a photo opportunity spot for the kids and most importantly a refreshing breeze and rather pleasant overview of the streets below. Out on the Sukhumvit road there is another walk in entrance –

again continuing the theme park idea with a “more than life size” green Hulk figure for further photo opportunities and also amble parking at the side. Have a look at this little market the next time your passing. The enthusiasm and willingness to please of the vendors in this little spot is quite charming and you might just pick up some interesting item, eat some inexpensive “nosh” and perhaps catch an evening’s entertainment.

a y a t t Pa JULY BARGAIN HUNTER ARTICLE
Welcome to Pattaya Bargain Hunter, my name is Belinda and before living in Pattaya I was a buyer in London’s West End. An important part of my job was to look out for items of quality, value and with that certain special something. Now I look out for bargains in and around Pattaya to share with you. To follow this month’s Nightlife theme I thought I’d share some of my favourite evening specials with you:
Centara Pratumnak Happy hours come and go and there are many offers that focus on Sundown special offers – I have tried a few and can honestly say that for the quality of cocktails served and its very excellent location the Centara Pratumnak’s offer of “Freeflow cocktails or wine” between the hours of 5pm and 7 pm for 500 baht is my favourite. Another goody from them is the Friday evening at The Breeze deal that again for a one off 500 baht price gives you a whole bottle of wine with a cheese plate and tapas.
Hilton
Or you may want to admire the views of Pattaya Bay from their rooftop on the 34th floor where from again the magic sunset hours of 5-7pm you can take advantage of their buy 1 get 1 free on selected cocktails. That said I’m afraid this promotion may well be a victim of its own success and certainly on the evening I went the view was far better than the drinks!
Sunset Lounge at Hotel Baraquda
Not quite so high but still offering lovely sunset views is the Sunset Lounge at Hotel Baraquada. It’s a little farther down 2nd road from The Hilton (just after The Avenue) and also has the buy one get one cocktail special between 5-7 pm. However if you want to try having an evening out that does not involve wining and dining (quite a challenge in Pattaya) then how about getting a group together to have a night out at one of the Bowling venues around town. Not as expensive as you might think if for example you arrive before 6 pm at Central Festival its only 120 baht per person with just 50 baht for the obligatory footwear, Or how about “A night at the Movies”! There are some excellent blockbusters out at the moment that really deserve to be seen on the big screen either with or without 3D. Bargain Hunter of course likes going on a Wednesday when you can take advantage of all the usual comforts on offer any other day of the week but only pay 120 Baht at SFX on the 6th floor of Central or even more amazingly just 80 baht at Major Cinema. The Avenue.
BRONX PIZZA – Soi Diana
If you just fancy a little “snack” after all these activities there are of course many, many pizza outlets around town – its amazing to see just how many have sprung up in recent years. Teaching English - Tales from the Classroom sure in lining 20 children up and setting them in a semi-press up stance. He then proceeded to yell at them in the middle of the assembly area, watched by 100 curious kids, while he made them sing the alphabet. All very humiliating, and all of which had the required effect. A while later we were told to refrain from any ‘unusual’ punishments. Cracking a metal ruler over their knuckles was fine, but let’s not humiliate them, please. At the start of a new school year we were shown to a new staff room. All of the carefully-cataloged materials from our erstwhile office now lay scattered over a classroom floor. In our new staff room the one thing that had been neatly stacked was a collection of glossy hard-back books. Still in their plastic covers, we started to unwrap them to see what educational treasures we’d been given.
Whether to use Thai in the classroom is a tricky call. On the one hand, it’s a lot easier to explain grammar rules and simple translations with a little Thai. However, once students know you can speak Thai, some will be more reluctant to use English with you and understanding how things work in Thai schools can take years of practice. Once you think you’ve worked out what’s going on, along will come something that makes absolutely no sense. Thai schools regularly make up their own rules, or bend them, which can be hard for foreign teachers to understand. The best advice is to simply nod and let them get on with it.
Among the books were ‘Later Italian Paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland’, ‘Scottish Lighthouses’, New Austrian Architecture’, ‘Turf Grass: Science and Management’ and a tome about great fireplaces of our time. Given that this sub-tropical nation wasn’t particularly in need of fireplaces, great or otherwise, and that new Austrian architecture is possibly even less gripping than the old style, you have to wonder just what someone was thinking. To this day, they remain in their covers, untouched by ESL hands.
For example, at a speaking test in a Bangkok school everything had gone smoothly and we had spent the morning testing students and a few teachers. Students, it turned out, were far easier to deal with. Usually the tests are done in pairs, with a group of three at the end if there is an odd number of candidates. At this school there was indeed an odd number of teachers, but rather than be given a group of three, they remained in pairs and the last teacher came in with a woman who had done the test 10 minutes earlier. Pointing this out to the co-ordinator, I was told the last candidate didn’t get on with those she was meant to be in a group of three with. The solution was to get the other woman to do the whole test again to make up the numbers. A great example of when it’s best to simply nod and accept that this is how it is. At one secondary school all the female students were lined up for assembly. Teachers then went along the ranks to check if the girls were wearing bras - by feeling their shirts. Bras were not deemed appropriate for 16-year-old girls and the school preferred them to wear plaited hair and long skirts that resembled parachutes. Teachers ran their hands over the girls’ backs to feel for any bra straps. Another teacher, an American named John, took great plea-

St. Andrews teachers, students and parents celebrated at the Holiday Inn Executive Tower after being awarded the top award-Gold standard- by a team of UK inspectors, which makes St. Andrews the first and only school to achieve this in Pattaya and the entire Eastern Seaboard. In order to achieve the gold status inspectors judged the school on the following eight sections: the progress and achievement of students; students’ personal development; the quality of teaching and learning; the curriculum; the school’s accommodation and resources; how well the school cares for and supports its students; the school’s partnership with parents and the community and leadership and management.

AN ‘OUTSTANDING’ SCHOOL: ST. ANDREWS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, GREEN VALLEY ACHIEVES ‘GOLD STAR STANDARD’ IN RECENT INSPECTION.
In every single category St. Andrews International School, Green Valley achieved grade 1: ‘Outstanding’ and is one of the four schools in South East Asia that have achieved this incredible result. “We are absolutely delighted to have the high standards and successes of our school confirmed by independent educational experts, “said Andy Harrison, Principal of the school. Beatrice Walker a parent of two secondary children said, “I have always known that St. Andrews International, Green Valley was the very best choice for my children and this inspection report confirms this.” Eimear Rogers a parent of a primary student said “From the first moment I came to St. Andrews there was a real buzz about the school, where everyone seemed really happy to be there. My child is thriving in every way and I am not surprised to hear the result from the inspection. I have every faith that St. Andrews provides the best education for my child. “ All reputable International Schools are regularly inspected to ensure that rigorously high standards are maintained and students and parents are assured that they are receiving the best education possible. Michelle Taylor, Senior Teacher, who leads the inspection process at St. Andrews said, “It is really important when choosing a school to ask to see their inspection report as this gives parents an independent judgement of a school which can sometimes vary from the advertising that the school provides.” So as the school year comes to end students, teachers and parents are celebrating not only the successes that students have experienced throughout the year, but also the confirmation that St. Andrews, International School; Green Valley is the only ‘Gold star ‘standard school on the Eastern Seaboard.

Fancy barbeque pork ribs, fried chicken or grilled fish? You’ll probably find it here. If Thai food’s on your mind then you’re in luck? Choose from fried noodles, noodle soup, the appropriately named drunken noodles (Phat Khi Mao), ‘Mama’ noodles, Phad Thai noodles or something made from marinated Thai red pork loin (Moo Dang) on cold noodles with fresh crisp vegetables. It’s all there along with all of the other beloved noodle themed dishes. If you need to sink your teeth into something a bit more substantial than noodles, the list of Thai rice based favorites found at these roadside repasts is long and varied. Think fried rice (Khao Phat) or spicy pork (Phat Kra-pow Moo) or boiled chicken (Khao Man Gai) on rice topped with a fried egg (Kai Dow) to name a few. And let us not forget the wide variety of Thai curries on steamed white rice, both fiery and creamy. Are you craving Thailand’s famous barbeque pork chicken or beef on a stick or a grilled hot dog or two with dipping sauce? No worries, more than one vendor will have what you desire. If you’re brimming with liquid courage or just want to show your audacity, why not gobble some crunchy crickets (Jîng Rèet) or squishy silk worm pupae (Dàk Dâe Măai)?
Street Food After Hours Most inhabitants of, and visitors to, Pattaya know that it has earned a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent party towns. As such, within the city limits reside several areas where revelers can do some serious partying whilst pursuing the “after hours pastime” of their preference. The young and the young at heart may opt to grind away the hours cavorting to hubbub of the hottest hip-hop tunes in a trendy nightclub. Those who are severely dehydrated may choose to imbibe every spirit imaginable and then some, in one of this city’s more than plentiful watering holes. While the majority simply prefer to feast their eyes on the antics and clever absurdities conducted each and every evening by the indigenous bar workers, the temporary tourists and the ever-present expats, whose degree of inebriation ranges from scarcely to extraordinarily. Regardless of how you’ve spent your nocturnal leisure time, the perfect end to one’s alcohol fueled foray into the wilder side of Pattaya doesn’t necessarily have to be another burger from the Golden Arches or leftovers found in the fridge. Reveler or not, many of us may not be aware that every night as soon as the daylight edifices of commerce bolt their doors, a plethora of mobile eateries descend on the main thoroughfares that provide both entrance and egress to Pattaya’s most colorful nightlife venues. Some of the vendors of consumable commodities remain for the duration. Others move on to greener pastures as soon as their queue of customers dwindles to naught. Each food seller’s ultimate goal is to sell out as quickly as possible so that they can return to hearth and home as early as possible. Between the hours of 22:00 and 24:00 conveyances comprised of pickup trucks, automobiles, motorbikes, some with sidecars, and push carts, all armed with an array of cooking contraptions and folding tables line the curbside of said concourses cheek to jowl. But just as vampires do, the curbside cafes disappear without a trace before the sun rises again. A stroll along one of these boulevard buffets will reveal a startling variety of victuals – everything from fried crickets, to fried potatoes to fried noodles and everything in-between.
www.pattayatrader.com
Of course both will be available. If your sober sensibilities and queasy stomach won’t allow you to ingest a diet intended for an insectivore, some familiar fare may be just the ticket. I’ve seen (but not always) sandwich makers, burger flippers, pizza bakers, pasta cookers, and the purveyors of the always delicious döner chicken kebab. If you’re in the mood for something sweet rather that savory, look for banana pancakes, round Thai doughnuts, Thai crepes (Khanom Buang Thai) or the perennial Thai favorite of mango and sticky rice (Khao Nieow Ma Muang). If you’re counting calories after drinking a dinner comprised of 5,000 or so liquid calories, there’s a cornucopia of fresh seasonal fruits, steamed fresh corn on the cob, and even a few Thai style salads. In short, the meandering menus of these transient meal merchants is so vast and so diverse that one is sure to find edible matter that suits their personal preference at a price that is sure to please. The best after hour’s roadside restaurants in my opinion, take place on the southern side of South Pattaya Road between 2nd and 3rd Roads, and on the northern side of Central Pattaya Road between 2nd Road and Soi Bukhaow. Walking Street, the epicenter of Pattaya’s nightlife is also partially transformed into an impromptu alfresco eatery at approximately 2 am and remains so until the wee hours become even weeer !

rom Tuk Com if you head down the street in the direction of the beach and Walking Street you will see a sign for Boutique City Hotel, turn left there, look for the Penguin and you will come across Dr Olivier’s Clinic. My instructions for this Nightlife edition of The Trader was to go there the morning after having enjoyed the best of Pattaya’s nightlife ( slightly the worse for wear) and test out the effectiveness of Dr Olivier’s morning after Hangover drip.
What I wasn't expecting, was the fascinating back story to Dr Olivier himself. It started as many do, with a medical student backpacking his way through S.E Asia and falling in love with the place. However after returning to Geneva to study anaesthesiology , in 1990 he was given a year off to join the ICRC (International Committee Red Cross) returning to Thailand to work with war victims at a hospital camp at Khao I Dang by the Cambodian border. For those like me, who are a fan of the film “The Killing Fields” this very hospital is the building you see in the final scene of the film when the journalist and photographer meet and hug at the airstrip. As the film could not be shot in Cambodia they used locations like this in Thailand and it was at this very hospital that many victims of the brutal Khmer Rouge were treated, including horrific cases of children who lost limbs by stepping on land mines. The hospital was in fact closed in 1991 when the war came to an end and they began to repatriate Cambodians back home. Dr Olivier returned to Geneva to finish his medical studies. He came back to Thailand to live in Bangkok in 1996 to await his appointment at a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam but due to the Asian crash in 1997 investment was withdrawn and instead he transferred to the Thonburi hospital in Bangkok as assistant to the medical director. In 1998 he had to apply for a medical license in order to become a practicing doctor in Thailand and this further studying included passing all his exams in Thai. His wife’s family lived in Pattaya and so he hit on the idea of building a home and starting his own clinic here. Many of his colleagues in Bangkok said he was crazy because in 1999 Pattaya was simply known as “Sin City” - now all these old friends say that if they'd had his chance they perhaps would have liked to have made the move themselves.

Back then the patients he saw were 99% European, males of 60+ coming to Pattaya to have fun but now he also sees many younger people, couples, families and the breakdown of his patients are around 70% Foreigners 30% Thais. He does after all speak several languages: English, Thai, French and German and sees himself as a real general practitioner who can assess his patients and then recommend further stages or specialist care as necessary. Over the years one particular field has interested him, that of Anti Aging and he attends annual conferences in Bangkok to keep up to date with the latest developments. The vitamin and Mineral infusions are very popular and especially as you would expect in Pattaya: the “Hangover Drip. This was what I was to try, being a vitamin cocktail of Vitamin C, B1, B6, B12 with magnesium and calcium. These are the very vitamins and minerals depleted in the body after a heavy drinking session and this method is far more effective than simply taking tablets. Dr Olivier was keen to point out that he in no way encourages heavy drinking rather, as you would expect from a doctor, recommends no smoking, drinking only in moderation, regular exercise, health checks and the monitoring of hormone levels in later years. However, within this infusion everything being natural, there are no chemicals and therefore no side effects and it is also great for those wanting a pre-party pick me up or patients suffering from chronic fatigue. So how did it work? Well I was “hooked up” to my drip quite painlessly and laid down for around 20 minutes while the drip administered the fluid straight to my blood stream (far more effective than the natural wastage of swallowing vitamins) I was told that I might feel warm but not to worry as this would simply be due to the Magnesium content. In fact I did not, I felt absolutely fine and left the charming Dr Olivier with my pad and pen ready to jot down my post treatment symptoms. Well about 1 hour later I had a raging thirst – I had been warned to drink plenty of fluids and so got through many glasses of water. Another hour passed and I did start feeling a little warm – was this the magnesium kicking in or simply the midday heat ? After three hours I noticed that I was getting plenty done: washing, changing beds, general house work and I’d pretty much been on my feet the whole time. A real difference from my usual state “the morning after the night before” when I would be in front of the TV, planning my next greasy meal to stave off my hangover -this was a very different state of affairs. My well-being continued throughout the day and well into the next when my “Gym Buddy” remarked that I seemed to be remarkably improved with my exercising. So all in all, this proved to be not merely a placebo effect but a real benefit to my overall state of health. The vitamin cocktail is 3,000 baht but there is currently a promotion offering 3 for 6,000 baht – with no time limit as to when they are taken.
Dr Olivier’s clinic is due to be relocated to Thepprasit Road for better access and parking in September – you will be sure the Pattaya Trader will be reporting on the move and new address ! www.pattayatrader.com

Has the Beautiful Game Finally Lost its Shine?
Without question, football remains the world's number one sport. Different leagues are watched non-stop around the globe, irrespective of which country they originate from. More and more money is being pumped into the game on an almost daily basis, sponsorship deals, transfers and of course players wages- this being one of the most documented areas that the media focuses on. However, is the bubble about to burst? Will we see a slowdown in the growth of top-tier products like the English Premier League? Is the current, or indeed the next scandal going shake football to it’s foundations? Of course, being an expat, living in Thailand allows me to have a slightly different perspective on things. I now no longer pander to Sky Sports breaking news every hour of the living day. Yes, I still have a watchful eye over the transfer merry-go round, but seriously it isn’t worth paying much attention to until the thing actually happens. That said, it does allow me to witness an unprecedented level of matches. Current programming shows every single Premier League game live, not something that you could ever expect if you were living in the UK.
Thais Remain Crazy Over the EPL!
It’s on in bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, in-fact the locals are so fanatical it's on just about everywhere they have the opportunity to sell a few beers and accommodate a small crowd. It takes a bit of getting used to but, it’s not uncommon to see Thai’s “switch” teams or follow two/three at a time - is nothing sacred? When it comes to digesting football, Thai people have long since had a passion for the game. It makes sense really, when you see the level of exposure the sport has here. Their own leagues (and some them of it very decent) plus an unhealthy mix of EPL / La Liga / Serie A etc etc. It would appear that they can’t get enough of it, morning, noon or night! At this rate there won’t be much programming space left for the news or Thai soaps!
With access to games on an unprecedented level, you have a recipe for a football “love-fest” that shows no immediate signs of abating. Or do you?
Thai Cash Backing the Premiership
Thai money, is getting in on the act . There was the well documented takeover of Man City back in 2007, just before the serious cash-cow arrived from Abu Dhabi. Perhaps lesser known, but still relevant, investments come in the shape of Thai
As well as the TV coverage, many of the top sides take time out at the end of their season to fit in a few extra games. It’s not uncommon for the likes of Chelsea, Man U, Tottenham, Liverpool et al to visit Thailand on some whistlestop tour of SE Asia. Commercial opportunities in this region have seen high profile teams look for ways to squeeze income out of an extra fan here and there.

Union Group who bought Sheffield Wednesday back in March. Leicester City’s who are owned by Thai Duty Free giant King Power, and Reading who also enjoys shared Thai ownership. Beer Chang are easily recognisable as the main sponsor of Everton Football Club also.
The Good
The recent Thai All Stars vs Chelsea game attracted a bumper crowd. An extra game at that stage in the season, combined with searing heat isn’t likely to produce a feast of football. While Chelsea worked hard and remained professional, the 1 nil score in their favour just about summed things up. Although Chelsea put out a decent strength side, as you might expect, the game wasn’t a goal fest. However, that didn’t stop the locals from getting behind their favourite players. Was it a success? Of course it was - extending the brand and allowing locals to see their heros right up close is always going to work, isn’t it? However, recent events may well have worked to take the shine off things, even for the ever raucous Land of Smiles locals.
The Bad
Take the Leicester City visit as prime example. Sadly, this one will be remembered for all of the wrong reasons. Management at the club have launched an internal investigation amongst claims that three of it’s players were involved in what has been reported as a “racist orgy”. Huge embarrassment for the club and it’s officials, particular given the Thai ownership status and the fact that the event happened while the club was on tour in Bangkok - Ouch! Definite own-goal, if ever there was one.
The Downright Ugly
Perhaps the biggest risk to football right now is the full scale probe into its very own “monarchy”. FIFA has always given the appearance of being untouchable, or rather it’s leader Sepp Blatter has. The row over the hosting of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup’s shows no sign of going away, despite constant growls from the awarded countries to maintain their complete innocence in the events that have unfolded. Quite clearly, there are people at the head of football who have approved things that really shouldn’t have been approved. Monies have been transferred and it doesn’t look like it has always been above board. This is why perhaps the FBI and Swiss authorities have finally taken the decision to jump in and get their act together. Impeccable timing couldn't have been better, as it was literally days leading up to the FIFA election that saw a number of top level execs go on the wanted list.
Perhaps the most telling changes were the ongoing probes from the FBI. Was the man that appears more slippery than Teflon finally going to be on the radar of the Federal Bureau? Hmmm, not sure……... but maybe Sepp wasn’t either. A couple of days passed and its inglorious leader finally did the decent thing and announced he was stepping down. THE END. Well, not the end really. More like the middle of what could easily turn into another nasty saga. It would appear that there hasn’t been a firm date set for Blatter to end his reign. He still has much “good” work to do. Just when you thought it all couldn’t get any crazier, there are even talks that Blatter might throw his hat in the ring and stand at the new election. Despite this being played down, in the wild and wacky world of FIFA, stranger things have happened! So for now, the shine has definitely gone off the game we love and it might well take a long time to come back.
Surely this would stop the much maligned Sepp Blatter from standing for a 5th term? Not a chance! He stood proud and demanded people listen, “he was the one that was going to save FIFA” and return them to their former glory.
The End of Football - “as we know it”
Time for voting soon came, and with only one competitor, Mr Blatter found himself triumphant once again. The voice of FIFA had spoken and he was set to rule the roost for years to come.. Pressure was muted from the World Cup’s main sponsors, voicing their concern about what exactly was going on in the upper echelons of football. There was even (briefly) talk about England gaining support to pull out of the next World Cup - an unlikely thought.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT WIMBLEDON ?
hat is it about Tennis? Heaven knows I'm not the sportiest of people and mostly when I hear about league tables and goal scores I just glaze over but Tennis and especially Wimbledon fire my imagination. Its literally the only sport that I can sit glued to the screen for five hours whilst watching a thrilling Final. To see these athletic Gods of the courts exhibiting the finest fitness levels known to man or woman somehow seems inspiring, for just a moment you feel that you could take up a raquet and learn to be as graceful and at the same time powerful as they are.
Then Wimbledon itself -the pearl the very diamond in the whole Tennis calendar Then Wimbledon itself -the pearl the very diamond in the whole Tennis calendar to my mind more important and enjoyable than any of the Grand Slams. For a start I love its tradition the fact that they still insist on the players wearing white and proud groundsmen slavishly work for hours on the green lawn courts. Even thought the uniforms of the umpires and ball boys have been designed by an American (Ralph Lauren), it has to be conceded that he did do rather a good job with the overall green and purple branding carried through from the score boards right to the towels key rings and general keepsakes that can be bought at the Souvenir shop. If you've ever been to Wimbledon or if you ever have the chance - please go you'll understand what I mean.
From the traditional strawberries and cream to the glasses of Pims it's just so much more than watching the game anywhere else. From the traditional strawberries and cream to the glasses of Pims it's just so much more than watching the game anywhere else. Of course if you're lucky enough to get onto the Centre or No 1 courts then that's a dream come true as it extremely difficult to come by a ticket these day other than by trying to purchase them months or perhaps even a year in advance. This is because the corporate world has taken up “The Season of which Wimbledon is a part and I'm afraid that people who aren't really fans of the game will be entertained in the hospitality suites and boxes and rows of Wimbledon and sadly many of these guests will find more interest in the free bar rather than the tennis itself. However there is something to be gained from this, for those in the know it is possible for people who can't bear the thought of staying for the five hour match, to return their tickets perhaps halfway through the day and these can be purchased from the box office by the patient faithful who will queue on the day for a chance of getting such a return.

SPORT & LEISURE Even if you're not so blessed there is still Murray's Mound – originally “Henman Hill” when first created, a grassy hill with a giant screen just outside the courts where you can picnic while you watch the live action. There's something about the cheers from the crowd and being part of an audience that makes the whole experience exhilarating and even to just wander around the grounds, hear the amplified decisions of the umpires and generally take in the atmosphere is fabulous. I myself will not be lucky enough to be viewing the Men's Final on the 11th June from Wimbledon but rather looking for a good watering hole in Pattaya with some like minded enthusiasts. If it is to be Murray/ Djokovic I will once again be torn by the indecision of who to cheer for. Of course Murray having reached the top of the game has helped the British fans for so long time without a true champion but the sheer grace and beauty of the way Djokovic plays the game makes me want to cheer him on that and the incredible feat of how he manages to emerge from hours of play witho9ut a hair out of place and not even the slightest wrinkle of a sock ! And after watching a full fortnight of glorious sport, if you do really feel inspired to take up the game it's not too difficult to buy an inexpensive raquet from somewhere like Tesco Lotus and nip next door to the Outlet Mall for your discounted trainers and sports clothing. Scfattered around Pattaya there are tennis courts ranging from those within sports clubs at the Royal Cliff and Dusit Thani to those in housing villages where if you ask there is often just a small charge (often as low as 50 Bart per hour) for the use of the court even if you do not live there. You just have to “Love it All”!

i Folks, the day started well, as I waited for my fishing buddy I spent 20 minutes casting for squid in the shallow water just south of the dock at Naban. I got 7 squid all with a body length of over 3 inches, perfect for cutting into strips for trolling for horse mackerel (bpla thoo) and snipe (bpla gratong). So I picked Frank off the ferry and we went to Koh Krok. Normally during the winter we would fish the north end on a dropping tide but recently with the bigger summer tides we have found fish on the south west of the island. I have noticed before that dive boats would drop divers on the north west side, then go south and wait to pick them up only to find that the divers could not swim against the current.
We trolled around the coastline but the fish were few and far between, so we tried the north west coastline of Koh Krok. And we ended up with some twelve assorted fish and no big ones, not a great start. So we headed for the north coast of Koh Larn, we did one run across the first bay and did not get a bite, things were getting desperate, and we tried our last hope the far north west side of Hat Dewean (the beach on the north end of Koh Larn). Just as we were in line with the point Frank’s line shot off his reel, the handle span round furiously as the horse mackerel ran for 15 metres, stopped and ran again, stopped and ran again. This was the fish we were looking for. I reeled in my line and then started heading out to sea (to encourage the fish to head away from the shallows) and slightly towards the fish. Things were getting tricky for Frank as the sea was rough over the point half metre waves would push the boat high just as the fish dove down towards the coral. This is where monofilament helps, that stretch comes in handy sometimes It took Frank over twenty minutes before I netted a 15 inch fish (I measure all my fish from the head to the end of the backbone). That was the start, over the next two hours we picked up another five fish all about the same size, all together they weighed close to nine pounds (four kilos). Never had so many big horse mackerel in one day and it was a tough bite. I went out to Koh Man Wichia alone, with three live squid and plenty of live small fish. When the four main rods are out, two float (one far away) and two bottom (one with 10 gm the other 50 gm weights) I bottom fish with a light rod. Just as I was about to check the baits, one rod bent right over and the line shot off the reel. I leaned into the fish trying for a good hook set, the 6lb – 15 lb ugly stick does not have enough power to strike a big fish. The fish went sideways away from the boat and away from the two float rods which left the 50 gm bottom rig too close! Then as I was looking at the line going down, still stripping off a four kilo queen fish jumped out of the water. A great sight! Back down he went, then started to go round the back end of the boat, I moved the two rods out of the way, and the fight went on. It was looking good until the fish went back, came up and jumped again. I noticed to my dismay one of the floats was now at right angles to the boat, this was going to get tricky. Sure enough three minutes later the fish got off, I still reeled in in the faint hope that the fish was swimming towards the boat but no luck. I thought the float line had unhooked the wire trace but when I looked, the wire was shredded and the hook gone. I had him on for fifteen glorious minutes, the memories of the action etched into my brain. I will still use four rods in the rod holders and take my chances. Using only one rod in your hands takes a far more dedicated fisherman than me. The usual, if you want any info on tackle shops, want to share your catch of the day photo’s it’s plamafia5@aol.com. Have Fun, Roger

S
uper 2000 has earned a big reputation as the most competitive and closely fought touring car category in South East Asia, it produces winners and the bumper grids denote its strength in depth; it’s become one of the most popular race categories here. And judging by the frenetic track action seen during the two opening races of this year it looks like it’s going to be another ‘golden year’ for Super 2000. When the dust had finally settled on a very hot Sunday evening at the first race of the year there were two wins out of two races for Jack Lemvard in the Vattana Motorsport BMW E90. But that didn’t tell very much of the story, Jack had to work hard for his trophies. However he’s a highly accomplished and ambitious Super 2000 driver with an equally accomplished and ambitious team right behind him and so at only the season's quarter distance he’s already staked his claim to be the man everyone has to beat if they want to win the championship this year. Behind Jack there were many, many impressive performances, so it’s hard to pick out just a few. Certainly though Pasarit Phromsombat had a weekend to remember; the reigning Super Production champion has graduated to Super 2000 and he immediately started trading the top spot with Jack. He eventually headed home with a second- and third-place overall to his name, job well done and a very happy driver and team. Munkong Sathienthirakul started from the back of the grid in the first race and battled his way up the classification to snatch the final step on the overall podium, while in the second race he went three places better to nab the runners up spot; he walked away from Buriram with the championship lead in Class B in his grasp. Munkong’s another who is going to fancy a shot at the title overall title too. Another driver to make a run from the back of the grid to the overall podium was Kittipol Pramoj Na Ayudhya who did the business in Race 2 after blowing his engine in Race 1; he’s made another step forward as a driver and was locked into the overall lead battles during the weekend. A highly experienced name, Jakthong Navasoopanich, was as usual in the middle of the front running action all weekend; he rightfully claimed a double podium finish. Hong Kong driver Rudolf Yu turned up here last year and impressed, he did the same again this time and clearly he's another Class B driver who has higher ambitions. These are just a few of the many names that stood out over the long,

MOTOR TRADER hot opening weekend of the year. Super 2000's big – entirely justifiable – reputation means it's a firm favourite with motorsport fans that know there is simply no better bumper-to-bumper racing to be found in Thailand. And for Pattaya’s many race fans they well see the series in action up close when the ‘touring cars’ visit Bira Circuit in September.
Krating Daeng makes a splash in truck racing For most fans in Buriram at the season opener there was something of a surprise in store when the pitlane lights went green and the racing trucks surged onto the track for the first time this year as, amongst their ranks, were two brand new pickups in a colour scheme that is a very familiar sight on the Thai racing circuits – black with a split red and yellow logo. That’s because one of Thailand’s top motorsport outfits, the Krating Daeng Racing Team, has rocked into Super Pickup for the first time. This is a big team with sky-high standards that understands all about winning and has an ambition to match its success rate. That it has decided to jump into Super Pickup is a ringing endorsement of one of Thailand’s popular racing categories and the levels of preparation and expertise that Krating Daeng brings with it means it could well already be said that truck racing will never be the same again. As befits the Krating Daeng Racing Team the two D-Max trucks were brand new and immaculate, bringing a level of finish and presentation not seen in this category before. And typically of this team there was a real twist in the story as the two drivers behind the wheel were real rookies – neither have ever raced before.
Controlling a pukka racing truck, a machine that was never designed with the race track in mind, takes real skill and ability, seeing the top pickup stars wrestling their big machines around the circuits of Thailand is one of the reasons that this discipline has become so popular with fans. Team Manager ‘Kiki’ Sak Nana, arguably Thailand’s most famous racing driver, is a man who always challenges convention and loves a new challenge, so it’s little wonder he decided to take this ambitious new route, as he explained in the pitlane as his two new trucks took to the track for the first time. “I’m very happy with TSS and we want to do more variety, we have never done pickup [racing] before and we want to try a new challenge so we want to try racing this car,” he said. The opening weekend of the year was really just being used as
www.pattayatrader.com
the starting point of this new programme, admitted Kiki, although with a team of this stature there were expectations. “The pickup truck is long term planning,” he said. “This is the first race, there is a lot of development and learning of the car to do.” “The drivers have no experience of racing but of course they love racing and come to the races with me many times,” he continued. “But this is the first time they drive on this track, so it’s very interesting.” Indeed, it is interesting to say the least, few drivers step into the cockpit of a racing truck for their first competitive track outing. Kiki reckons that apart from talent both drivers have the mental and physical attributes needed to become successful drivers. “Philip [Massoud] was my Team Manager in my drift team for a long time,” explains Khun Kiki. “He has a lot of discipline, everything with him is very efficient. Both of them are very efficient persons.” Thailand’s superstar driver races with passion above everything else, few people love this sport more and indeed have given more to it than Kiki, and clearly he wants his new protégées to feel the same buzz, to be moulded in his style. “They have followed racing all their life so I think it’s time for me to put them behind the steering wheel and start to feel what it’s like to become a racing driver and start to become professional drivers and start pushing hard and start to feel my stress and start to feel the butterflies and churning stomach when you go out there, we want them to feel that,” he says. Kiki also demands fitness from his drivers and they certainly exude that. “Basically I knew Kiki from drifting and became good friends with him and I’ve been supporting his drifting team and supporting his Porsche and I was interested to drive and he gave me the opportunity to drive if I wanted to in the pickup,” said Philip as he got to grips with his new mount. “So I took it.” He’s a raw recruit, certainly, but he settled in quickly and was soon posting fastest times in Class C, the category that is reserved for novice truck racing drivers. “It’s my first time racing and my first time in a pickup so I’m very happy, I think it’s a good

achievement and it motivates me to push harder and harder,” he said. Racing trucks have a reputation for being difficult to extract the full potential from and unique handling and driveability characteristics, so what was it like for Phillip behind the wheel of his new D-Max? “It understeers a lot when you push it, it also tends to oversteer at the rear as there is no weight there so you have to find an optimal balance which is very difficult,” the Australian explained. “As you are running leaf springs in the rear with a shock absorber, you don’t have a coil so you cant really do corner balancing so it’s a difficult car,” he continued. “You’ve got to gain confidence as you go and find your braking point and turn-in point and not to find the throttle too early as then the tail will come back out, so very tippy toe.” Phillip’s teammate, Songkran Yamamura, has also been eyeing up a racing career for quite a while. “I’ve known Kiki for over 15 years now,” he said in the pit garage. “We met in the UK, and since then I’ve been looking at his driving, looking at his cars, looking at his motorsport life and been dreaming of getting into motorsport events, but I’ve never had a chance to join the racing circuit. This year we had a talk and I was asked to join as one of the truck drivers.”
“That’s still not good enough, the car is about 80% ready, it’s not 100%,” said the Japanese driver. “Myself, I’m not ready yet, I have to tune my driving style to a car racing style, so that’s going to be the difficult part for me to get together. If the car is 100% ready I think I can do better than this but myself I’m not good enough yet.” Come the first race and despite being in the thick of the front running action in Class C Phillip and Songkran ended up empty handed. However valuable learning experience had been gained, their first race was now behind them and, crucially, they both clearly looked like they can make an impression in truck racing. In the second race though the rookies came through superbly to record a double podium finish. Songkran impressively won Class C outright while Phillip made an excellent recovery from an issue during the race to nail down the last step on the podium, a rewarding end to their first racing weekend. Pattaya race fans will have the opportunity to see both these drivers as well as the whole Krating Daeng Racing Team in action when Thailand Super Series and the Super Pickup category visit the city’s Bira Circuit in September.
Kiki is known for his demanding standards, few cars look more pristine than the Krating Daeng-liveried machines and he demands a very high level of fitness from both himself and his drivers, Kiki is known for his demanding standards, few cars look more pristine than the Krating Daeng-liveried machines and he demands a very high level of fitness from both himself and his drivers, so it wasn’t a great surprise that Khun Songkran didn’t profess to be satisfied although he posted the fastest time in Class C during practice.

Toyota iQ
W
hen it comes to selecting and purchasing a ‘city car’ i.e. a smaller scale vehicle that is both nimble in terms of maneuvering, and frugal in respect to the amount of petrol it consumes, there hasn’t really been a motor worthy of that title until now. Despite the fact that it took five years for Toyota to develop, the iQ, as the new Japanese hatchback city car is called is like no other small car currently on the market. In short, no pun intended, the Toyota iQ is shorter than the original Mini Cooper. It has the smallest turning radius of any of the so called city cars. It is also capable of seating four adults reasonably comfortably (well sort of), and it offers first class safety for its diminutive size. When the car was still just an idea, chief Engineer Hiroki Nakajima envisioned an automobile that could be marketed to a consumer who wanted a small car, not to those who merely wanted a cheap car. This is precisely what sets the iQ apart from the micro cars that other automobile manufacturers have been turning out. This fact is reflected in the car’s price which is a bit steeper for a vehicle of its size and class. Available in two models: the standard iQ with a 1.0 liter engine and the iQ3, which is equipped with a slightly more powerful 1.3 liter engine. The iQ, which is one of the very few cars to be completely developed from scratch in no way relies on existing parts from other Toyota models. Therefore, its toy-like appearance is most singular, and entirely unique. But isn’t that what happens when one breaks new ground instead of recycling the same old ideas?
Styling & Comfort In an attempt to break some new ground of my own, I’ll start this review with the mini-motors faults rather that its virtues. Given the car’s small stature, certain design elements that are normally taken for granted had to be sacrificed. The most noticeable shortcomings are as follows: • The ‘A’-pillars at the front are notably wide for such a small car, and hinder forward visibility to a certain degree. Perhaps the extra width was needed for structural integrity and rollover protection? • The rear headrests also interfere with rearward visibility and should be removed whenever no passengers are seated in the back. • Passengers seated in the rear will have to get used to the fact that visibility through the rear, side windows is practically non-existent. • The brightness of the headlights, while fine on welllit city streets will be sorely lacking in wattage when driving in dimly lit areas. • In respect to storage, what passes for the boot on the iQ, is greatly lacking in storage capacity. Some critics accuse the iQ of having no boot at all, just “a miserably small space behind the seats into which you might just squeeze a briefcase.” In fact, when the rear seats are folded down the boot’s storage space is only marginally increased.

Power Plant & Performance The 67 horsepower that’s put out by the 1.0 liter engine is said to allow the car to reach a top speed of 99mph. In reality, because the iQ’s overall weight is a tad heavier than other city cars, it’s doubtful that it will ever be described as “speedy”. Road tests show that the iQ labors some 13.6 seconds to reach 60mph. Agreed that’s not too bad, but when the 25.4 seconds the iQ takes to climb from 50 to 70mph is factored into the equation, its overall performance can best be described as tortoise-like. But
www.pattayatrader.com
once the desired speed is achieved, the iQ hums along for as long as necessary with nary a complaint. Surprisingly, the larger, and more powerful 1.3 liter engine does little to improve the iQ’s overall acceleration. It shaves a scant 0.7 seconds off the time it took the vehicle with the smaller engine to reach 60mph.
MOTOR & MARINE
What’s amazing about the iQ’s engineering is that when viewed from the outside, one wonders is it really possible for four non pygmy-sized persons to actually squeeze inside the iQ’s rather posh interior, let alone experience any degree of comfort. It’s definitely possible for two, six foot tall individuals to be comfortably seated in the front, but only in the back if there is a diminutive driver piloting the vehicle. In other words, the driver’s seat must be pulled all the way forward. When a six footer is driving, then the iQ inside is only fit for three full length passengers. The room that remains behind a normal sized driver is enough to accommodate a child or a bag of groceries. Headroom is adequate, if not ample provided you’re not a centimeter above six feet in length. Given the fact that the car is less than three meters long, the miracle of seating four comfortably can be attributed to the cabin’s asymmetrical design, the vehicle’s thin seats, and the other numerous unseen innovations. Another virtue of the iQ not found on other city cars is the ‘rear curtain airbag’. This was likely deemed necessary for reasons of safety, due to the rear passenger’s close proximity to the rear windscreen and any vehicle that may come into unwanted contact with the backside of the iQ. While the interior is not perfectly perfect, Toyota has surprisingly created an ambiance that looks and feels as if it belongs in a much larger automobile. The iQ rides on 15 inch alloy wheels and its safety features include ABS brakes and an antiskid system. Passenger protection is provided by the obligatory safety harnesses, and a nine point frontal airbag system as well as the above mentioned rear airbag curtain.
Around town, the iQ’s maneuverability is greatly enhance by its ultra-compact dimensions, and by its extremely small turning radius. This, combined with power steering, a standard feature on both models, allows the iQ to nimbly change directions in the midst of busy city traffic. Its tight turning ratio and lack of length also allows the iQ to easily slip both in and the out of tight parking spaces, which after all, is one of the most important characteristics of a city car. When it comes to out of town driving, the iQ handles impressively. Despite being the shortest four-seater car on the market, its wide wheel base prevents crosswinds from pushing the puny car around. In addition, the suspension has been engineered in such a way that the level of comfort is that of what one would expect from a mightier motor.
Conclusion & Specifications With all its flaws, the iQ is more than sufficient for its intended purpose – that of being an urban car. But beyond that, the iQ’s cruising ability is adequate if not ample when driven outside the confines of a busy city. Despite the rather wide windscreen supports, the driver’s visibility is actually quite good thanks to the vehicles wider width and the well thought out layout of its interior. The car easily admits three adults and one child, however, the proposition of including a fourth fully grown passenger largely depends on the forward position of the driver’s seat. The iQ is 2985 mm in length, 1680 mm in width, and 1500 mm in height. It weighs in at 890kg, and has a maximum fuel capacity of 32 liters. The estimated MPG is between 59 and 64mpg depending on the model and the conditions under which the car is driven. The estimated price for the iQ starts near 1.49 million baht and maxes out around 1.55 million baht.

The Thais are well aware of this fact and celebrate edible matter by eating everything imaginable. In fact, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark if you said that eating was one of Thailand’s great national pastimes – right after that of seeking sanuk. As proof, all one need do is take notice of what’s on offer whilst out and about. In general, the Thais don’t seem to care if their food (in its former incarnation) scuttled, crawled, slithered, hopped, swam or flew. It matters not if what they masticate was dug from the ground, dangled from a tree, plucked from a shrub, pulled from the water or found under a rock. All that matters is how good it can be made to taste. And in that regard, the Thais have been more than successful. Well, okay, there are a few exceptions, such as giant water bugs, pork blood jelly and ant eggs to name but a few. That being said, Thai cuisine and Thai street food can easily be integrated into the average Westerner’s diet. Sadly, whether one is a temporary traveler or a full time expatriate, too many foreigners turn their nose up at the edible bounty that the Land of Smiles has to offer. One of the primary reasons for this, other than the myth that all of Thailand’s fare is overly spicy; is that foreign interlopers suffer from the phobia of contracting a food borne illness. Those of us who have not been medically trained typically refer to the above mentioned intestinal eruptions by uncivilized nicknames like, ‘The Runs’, Montezuma’s Revenge’, or if it happens to be the result of too much spice ‘Flaming Liquid’. Regardless of the colorful slang name used to describe our gastro-intestinal woes, they all fall under the very broad umbrella of “Food Poisoning”. Food poisoning is caused by the consumption of contaminated food. The contaminants are infectious organisms comprised of bacteria, viruses, parasites or other toxins. Each of which can sully the food at any point during the preparation, cooking, serving and eating process. Food poisoning, as you may already know, is the colloquial and less scientific term for what a physician might call:
• Staphylococcus Aureus – which often lurks in meats, prepared salads, cream
sauces, and cream based pastry fillings. It’s also the fastest acting form of food poisoning. It can hit you from as little as 1 to 6 hours after consumption. Victims will experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps and a mild fever; the duration of which can be anywhere from 12 to 24 hours.

bacteria by that name coming into contact with a food product – usually as a result of the food handler not properly washing his or her hands. The symptoms of abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever normally begin to appear roughly 12 to 24 hours after exposure. If infected, one can expect Shigella to stick around for 2 to 7 days.
• Escherichia Coli or E-Coli – is a
gastro intestinal nuisance that can be contracted by the consumption of undercooked food, unpasteurized or raw milk and juice, soft cheeses that are made from raw milk, and raw fruits or vegetables that have not been properly washed. The incubation period is between 1 to 10 days. You’ll know you have it when you begin to experience severe diarrhea which is often bloody, severe abdominal cramps, and vomiting, all of which are accompanied by little or no fever. The unpleasantness of E-Coli can last approximately 5 to 10 days.
Sorry It’s Unavoidable Statistics show that some 30 to 70 per cent of all travelers (depending on their destination) will be subjected to food poisoning at some point during their journey. No matter where or what one eats, it’s impossible to avoid contracting food poisoning in one form or another, especially when eating out or travelling. That is of course, unless everything you consume remains in your complete control from the time it was harvested until to the moment it enters your mouth. My personal history here in Thailand tells me that I can expect to suffer the adverse effects of food poisoning about once or twice a year. In nearly every instance it was of the Salmonella or Shigella variety as I made a full recovery within 24 hours. However, on the two occasions in 14 years when I experienced a severe and

prolonged bout of food poisoning, both cases could be traced back to a local high priced, posh hotel restaurant. What this means is that food poisoning can strike anywhere. It matters not if you subsist on a diet prepared only in five-star restaurants by the world’s finest chefs or if you routinely feed yourself from the most forlorn of street food stalls. What’s important is the degree of hygiene that is practiced in the kitchen of the eatery in which you eat.
Boil It, Cook It, & Peel It
Sadly, food poisoning is unavoidable when one is entirely at the mercy of restaurants and street food vendors. There are however, a few things that can be done to mitigate the chances of leaving with an unwanted hitchhiker in your gastrointestinal tract only to erupt hours or days later in the form of a very unpleasant food borne illness. As a rule of thumb, most experts recommend that you, “Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it.” What that means is: This is a no brainer, but stay away from any form of liquid refreshment, such as iced tea, lemonade or iced coffee that has not been made from water boiled for a minimum of three minutes or from bottled water. The same rule applies to baby formula and brushing your teeth.
• Skip the buffets where the pre-prepared foods have been residing for an unknown amount of time. Instead, always order hot foods that have been thoroughly cooked. Experts further suggest that raw foods like sushi, cold cuts, boiled eggs, and dairy products that have not been properly refrigerated also be avoided. • When it comes to eating fresh fruits and vegetables, stick to the ones you peel yourself. Pre-peeled and pre-sliced fruits and vegetables present a greater risk for food poisoning because they may not have been washed properly or sliced under hygienic conditions. Any bacteria lingering on the skin or rind can be transferred onto the edible flesh within via the blade of the knife as it cuts through the tainted skin. Textured fruits that are not peeled, like strawberries should be thoroughly washed prior to consumption because their dimples and crannies provide a safe harbor in which bacteria can linger. • It’s also wise to inspect the premises of any unfamiliar establishment in which you are planning to eat. If you can’t see into the kitchen, check out the tablecloths, floors, condition of the menus, as well as the appearance of the staff to determine if its hygiene standards are up to par. • Finally, don’t infect yourself. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating any food, especially when travelling abroad. In the event that your stomach does start to feel a bit queasy or a little off, or worse, if you suddenly experience the urgent need to find the nearest toilet, I strongly advise that you memorize the following Thai phrase: Hông nám tee-nai? Mee mai gaan thaawng deern! Which means, “Where is the toilet? I have diarrhea!”

Karma at Work
t is impossible to live in Asia for any length of time without coming across the belief in ‘karma’, the notion that if you do good, good things will come to you, and if you do bad, bad things will befall you. Most cultures support a variation on that theme, whether it is called ‘swings and roundabouts’ or ‘what goes around comes around’, in an attempt to make moral sense of the ups, downs, joys and sorrows of life. Some time ago, my good friend George, a fifty-something frequent visitor to Pattaya, told me about one memorable day in his life. While his incumbent girlfriend was out shopping, George paid a sneaky visit to his ex-girlfriend. His ex happened to have her sister staying with her and was teaching her the art of oil massage in the hope of getting her a job here in Pattaya. When George turned up, he more than happily agreed to be the practice dummy for an oil massage with ‘happy ending’ session. That story was truly sickening and sickeningly true. A few months later George was back in Fun Town with another story to tell. At first reluctant to hear another of his sordid tales, he assured me this one was ‘different’. In town alone this time, George happened to be walking down a street in the early evening, Walking Street, in fact, when he was approached by a female survey-taker. She was in her mid-thirties, attractive and spoke English very well. With nothing better to do, George agreed to undertake the survey and while doing so, he engaged her in idle conversation. Of course, she didn’t like doing this type of work but she needed the money. When she mentioned she had been working all day and was about to finish up, George spotted an opportunity. Would she like to have a coffee and maybe some dinner before heading home? After a moment of coy reluctance, she agreed, saying she was not hungry but would have a drink with him. George nearly fell off his perch. A Thai lady turning down a free meal was unheard of in this town. Maybe she was ‘different’. He waited as she put all her papers and completed survey forms into a small carry bag then they walked off to find a cozy spot for a nightcap. It wasn’t long before he noticed her looking inquisitively into a Go Go Bar. George stopped and told her they could go inside for a closer look if she wished, adding, “You may be shocked at what you see inside.” She still seemed keen so he escorted her through the curtained doors. Inside there was another shock awaiting George. While being escorted to their seats, the dancers and staff all said ‘hello’ to his companion, calling her by name. Once seated, he asked her how they all knew her. She explained that she used to work as a service girl in this particular establishment some months earlier but quit after six weeks to get a more ‘respectable’ job.

They stayed for one drink, during which time George discovered she shared a room with a Go Go dancer from another bar and they were having problems. Apparently, her roommate had not come up with her share of the rent, due that day, and still owed money from last month. George realized his new companion was a lot less ‘different’ than he first thought, but he was intrigued. He knew he was probably going to do the wrong thing; he knew it would possibly lead to disaster; he knew how it would turn out; but he had to see it through and find out for sure. He couldn’t leave a story with no ending so, as he gave her 100 baht for a motorcycle taxi home, he asked if he could meet her the following evening after she finished work. She agreed. They met at the same place and this time she accepted his invitation to join him for dinner. But there was a snag. This was the beginning of a Buddhist Holy month and she had sworn off eating meat for the entire month. Did he know a vegetarian restaurant? No, he didn’t, but together they would find one. The search took an hour but they eventually found a restaurant which served vegetarian food and, over tofu, George was brought up to date with her latest catastrophe. She and her roommate had been evicted from their apartment and her landlord was holding their meager possessions until they paid the back-rent. Her roommate owed 3,000 baht which she said she would borrow from a friend tonight. She personally owed 2,000 baht and would probably see a loan shark in the morning. George asked where she was going to stay that night. She didn’t know but would go to the Go Go bar later and, if any of her friends pulled a customer for the night, ask if she could stay in their room. Saint George to the rescue. Without fear or forethought, he told her not to worry. He would give her the 2,000 baht and, as for a room, she was welcome to stay with him at his hotel. The lady was over the moon, giving him a long kiss on the cheek in gratitude. But – there is always a ‘but’ – there was something she had to tell him first. For this Holy month, as well as swearing off all meat, she had also sworn off sex. Yes, she said, she had taken a vow of chastity and could not possibly break it. This left George shell-shocked and in a situation. As a gentleman, he could not retract his offer even though things were definitely not working out as he had planned. He lied that he understood and told her she could still stay, even with no sex. Back at his hotel, they slept together, fully clothed, with the large bed offering little opportunity for gratuitous body contact. In the morning he gave her 2,000 baht and wished her luck. George was leaving Pattaya the following day so I met up with him that evening. He said she was staying with him again on this last night and he couldn’t stay long because she was waiting in his hotel room. She told him not to drink too much as she didn’t want him getting back to the room mao and possibly amorous. After only two beers, George bid me farewell and strolled off into the night, early and relatively sober, to the waiting charms of a celibate vegetarian. The sense of karma was just too great and I couldn’t help a parting, “That’s payback for the free oil massage!”

At the time this article was written the Sony a7RII camera was one of e-bay's most eagerly awaited products.
TECH NEWS
Product Review. The most awaited camera: Sony a7R II
Since the inception of digital photography, there has been a year to year race to build the most powerful, all-in-one camera that can adapt to any situation or user. The waiting may finally be over in the next few months as Sony have announced a release date of June 2015 for the a7RII (although shipping hadn't started at time of going to press). They will then deliver a camera that can shoot both amazing 4K video and 22.4 MP photos in extremely low light conditions. The camera has a small light body, super accurate image stabilization, state of the art auto-focus and it's viewfinder will offer the industry’s highest magnification. It will be, in very few words, the closest thing to perfection we know in the digital photography world.
What's all the hype about? Well - where to begin ? Consider the fact that this camera is the first full frame back side illuminated digital camera., The new technology allows for extremely sharp and well lit pictures to be taken under very low-light conditions. To put things into perspective, you will be able to use ISOs as high as 102,400 which is nothing short of impressive, add this to the camera's stabilization mechanism and there's hardly a shot you will miss. The fact is, this amazing night-time capability also translates very well to the 4k video shooting mode and that just means double the fun!
Image Stabilization and Auto-focus: With a 5-axis stabilization mechanism, this new model offers users an extremely reliable camera that is able to snap beautifully sharp pictures at even slower shutter speeds. I have seen very impressive examples of this as professional reviewers have taken blurred water pictures with a hand-held camera yet have still managed to produce extremely sharp and clear photographs.
The auto-focus feature on the a7R II is another example of how this camera is taking things to another level, with 399 auto-focus points that happen to cover roughly 45% of the total image area. The previous model from this series received criticism because its auto-focus was too slow for many. Sony has made up for this by increasing the auto-focus speed by 40% proving yet again, that the company takes users’ opinion seriously.
Shutter Mechanism:
There were complaints from users of previous models of a loud shutter mechanism with previous models that created enough vibration to ruin certain shots. Sony has listened closely to this feedback and ensured a new, smooth electronic system is in charge of the shutter-firing this time. The reduction of the vibrations caused by the old mechanism means a quieter and softer shooting experience, which should translate into sharper and clearer photographs.
Sony a7R II Specs: • 4K video and 22.4 MP pictures • Magnesium alloy body: Which makes it extremely durable and strong • Image stabilization: 5-axis (4.5 stops per CIPA standard) • Auto-focus: 399 focus points which accounts to an impressive 45% of the total image area • Sensor: 35mm • Expected starting price: $3,200 body only
Features:
As if all the above wasn't enough to get your excited about this beautiful piece of equipment, consider the fact that applications can also be easily installed to increase the camera's capabilities and features - with more to follow as developed by the supplier. This basically means the useage you can get from the Sony a7R II is just in its infancy. You can check out some of the existing apps at the official website: www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/

Are you nuts?
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is particularly appropriate for the investment world. Almost five years ago now after the worst stock market crash since the 1920’s or, if you prefer in living memory, investors who had been hit hard scrambled for guaranteed products that guaranteed capital and paid a rate of interest above the miserly bank deposit rates. For a while these were popular and who could blame investors for rushing to what they perceived as safety? The banks could only give limited guarantees as the strain on their resources by doing this was too much and they soon withdrew the products. Meanwhile what has happened to investors who took advantage of these guarantees and put all their capital into them five years ago? Many of them had two and five year time frames and the rate of return depended on the performance of various indices, usually they paid between 4 to 6 per cent. As I see it the problem with having all your resources in these products is the same as having all your assets in one asset class has always been- a lack of diversification leading to eventual loss of value on the original portfolio.

PATTAYA TRADER
While I have no problem recommending guaranteed products in every portfolio and would even increase the overall percentage for the cautious investor, it seems daft to me to have all your assets in something like this. If you have then you are in no position to fight the value of the baht when it increases against your home currency and for those living in Thailand the decreasing purchasing power of your money. If we look at equity market performance since the crash what do we see? The only way the markets could have gone, despite the Jeremiah’s and their double dip recession was up.
Many emerging markets like the BRIC countries (Brazil Russia India & China) have shown growth of over 150 percent in the first two years of recovery. Most other equity funds over the past five years have shown outstanding performance especially when measured against deposit rates. Surely every portfolio should have some of that. But no, many if not most jump out of equities immediately
Issue 177 | JULY 2015
For those of us who have been in the business for a few decades this is not a new phenomenon. Over the last thirty years I have seen three or four crashes of various strength, none as earth shattering as the last one, that have impacted investors in a negative way. Afterwards most investors behave in a manner that authenticates my assertion about madness. Please talk to your broker. It looks to me that the recovery will continue to now stutter along with volatility and that emerging markets I have already talked about here will have substantial growth this year also.

Amazon makes move to introduce shopping through your i-watch. As if shopping online wasn’t easy enough thanks to our mobile phones and tablets, now Amazon is making sure you can be a good consumer by shopping directly from your phone! The eBay Apple watch has been in internal testing ever-since Apple Co came out with the hardware, therefore it won't be too long before you'll be shopping from the comfort of your erm... wrist? The giant eCommerce platform has ensured time and resources have been put forward to optimize the phone app thus ensuring that the user experience will be as smooth as possible! Given the general legginess of these new watch apps, it's good to know eBay wants to make sure it's customers don't have a bad user experience whilst shopping from their watches. Furthermore this app will offer value for both buyers (who will never again miss that special offer) as-well as eBay merchants who will be able to follow their sales, receive confirmations and reply to requests from their Apple Watch. It seems a bit of a long-shot to say that people will be doing most of their shopping from their smart watches any time soon. This app may not offer the very best way to shop but it does however, offer huge advantages to eBay users as they can (in real time) keep up with all their transactions, messages and auctions regardless of their location.
iPad's new keyboard design and features pretty much turn your tablet into a computer: Personally speaking this is the most promising news I’ve heard for a while in regards to Apple products. If there's one thing I have always found annoying it is how clumsy I seem when using my tablet's keyboard. Changing between symbols, capitalizing wrongly, moving from text box to text box, all of these (and many more) small functions that are extremely simple to accomplish on computer keyboards, become frustrating operations when working on an iPad. Things are finally changing however. Apple has announced a series of really interesting upgrades to the design of the keyboard that promise to turn your tablet device into a computer-like intuitive work station.
The improvements come in 2 forms: • There will be extra functionality added so that now, by simply placing two fingers on the screen, you will get track-pad-like interaction with your cursor so that you can move around the screen in a more efficient and natural way (because it resembles how we normally interact with other computers). Also, extra buttons will be added so tasks like copying, pasting and text formatting (which were all quite annoying to do until now) will be much easier. • The iPad will now support external keyboard shortcuts so that you can easily integrate it with third Party keyboards totally removing the necessity of using the touchscreen keys. So why should you be as excited as I am about this? Well, though tablets are amazing for consuming content (watching videos, reading and maybe filling in credit card details), if you have ever attempted to work or write a lengthy email on one you may have noticed that it can take longer than usual (on a more conventional computer for instance) and get rather frustrating. With the improvements mentioned above (and also given the fact that split-screen multitasking will soon also be supported l) our iPads will be turned into a mobile (and respectably powerful) working station, much like a very thin and extremely light version of a laptop computer. Kind of exciting isn’t it?

At first the separation between the Facebook App and the messenger was badly received by users finding it annoying to be forced to install a whole different app simply for chatting. However by now reaching the number of downloads that it has it it certainly seems that users are getting accustomed to the way things are The reasons and benefits for this stand alone operation are: • Added free VOIP Video calling • The launching of a standalone messaging website • Opening of a third-party app platform • The announcing of customer support chat for businesses • The beginning of allowing friend to friend payments With Google busy developing things which we mere humans once considered impossible (projects include robotics, artificial intelligence, self-driving cars and immortality just to name a few) it has been Facebook who has stepped up and put itself up as the helper of we mere mortals and our everyday activities. Short messages, voice calls and video calls, trust me on this one, soon enough you'll be doing all 3 of these from a single App powered by Facebook and from the looks of it, the chosen one will be it's Facebook messenger App.

Last Will and
Testament in Thailand Estate planning is a process of anticipating and arranging the disposal of an estate and managing an individual's asset base in the event of their incapacitation or death. As part of an estate planning, drafting a Last Will and Testament is recommended. A Last Will and Testament is a declaration of intent concerning dispositions of assets or other matters which shall take effect, according to law after the demise of the Testator. The document will detail your assets in Thailand, such as property, bank accounts, vehicle, and personal valuable items, designating who shall inherit and control them according to your wish to prevent unnecessary complications and quarrels between family members. In Thailand, when a person dies without a Last Will and Testament, the intestate’s assets must be distributed in accordance with the law. As stipulated in The Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand. Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order;
Descendants • Parents • Brothers and sisters of full blood • Brothers and sisters of half blood • Grandfathers and grandmothers • Uncles and aunts
The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights of a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (Sin Somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the rest will be distributed accordingly. Overall, the executor will administer your estate and make sure that everything is done according to the terms of your will. Appointing a trusted executor is an important decision that needs thorough consideration. The responsibilities of an executor include making sure all assets are accounted for, all existing debts and tax obligations are paid, and that remaining assets are distributed to the correct beneficiaries in accordance to your will. Most individuals tend to choose family members or other close friends or relatives to act as an executor, it is important that he is someone you can completely trust. If you don't have a friend or a family member with the necessary expertise, consider hiring a lawyer, accountant or similar type of professional to act as your executor
Required Documents:
• Copy of Identification Cards (Passport/National ID Card) of the Testator • Copy of Identification Cards (Passport/National ID Card),

home address, telephone number and email address of the Beneficiaries and Executor • Copy of documents pertaining to your assets • Land, House or Condominium - copy of Title Deed, Sale and Purchase Agreement, and House Book • Business/Company - copy of Company Registration Papers • Vehicle – copy of Motor Vehicle Registration Book • Bank Account – copy of bank book account information page • List, description and photos of other personal valuable items • Possible Funeral requirements Having a will drafted in your home country to cover all your assets in Thailand may be troublesome to your family, especially in the event that the will might be invalid in Thailand courts should it not conform to the Thai law requirements. Different jurisdictions usually require different formalities for the wills. A Thai will should be prepared and signed on Thai Territory to ensure that Thai rules regarding the form of your will apply. It is very important to observe the correct legal formalities when signing, amending, or revoking your Will. If you fail to follow all of the specific formalities, then your Last Will won't be legally valid.
