Hi Readers It’s always a pleasure to welcome a new business to Pattaya and especially a new beauty salon ! We therefore wish Phimpawee Beauty Face every good fortune with their opening here in Pattayaand hope that all our trusted readers will support them in their venture. Talking of new ventures I was delighted to be able to attend a performance of Kaan - what a stunning extravaganza! The price of admission is not cheap I grant you but when you see the show you can really appreciate the value of your ticket and again it is extremely encouraging to see such world class entertainment open here in Pattaya along with another very welcome addition to town the nearby Greyhound Cafe - it’s as if a slice of Bangkok has been added to Thepprasit road Also the Sheep Farm going from strength to strength will. from the 8th July have a brand new Bird park - to offer its visitors a really fantastic opportunity for colourful photos - and I know how much you all enjoy taking photos ! Then on the 14th for all you Francophiles out there you can celebrate this historic Parisian event at New Nordic right here in Pattaya - only in Thailand right ?! Don’t forget as you go to any of these events or support these new, blossoming businesses please don’t forget to tell them you found out about them in The Trader. Wave a copy at them if you can and our apologies if you are finding it hard to track copies down, they are being snatched off the shelves as soon as they hit but have a look at the Out and About feature on our Facebook page and you will see where our intrepid messenger is delivering around Pattaya and of course you can always have a look at the on line mag on our website pattayatrader.com All the best ! P
attaya is renowned for being the entertainment capital of Thailand, it has a plethora of venues, live acts, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, bars and hosts many music and sporting events.Major acts regularly visit the seaside resort and perform in the dozens of live music venues that feature live bands every day of the week. There is also a growing swell of local Pattaya artists and bands that regularly can be seen performing around town. Pattaya hosts some of the best music events in the whole of Thailand and internationally recognised artists and DJs regularly attend to entertain local residents and bring many visitors to town.Events such as The Pattaya International Music Festival, Wonderfruit, Maya, Warp, Silverlake Music Festival, Sunset Beach, and New Year’s Countdown have elevated Pattaya’s reputation as one of Asia’s top live music events venues.. Along with these show stopping festivals and events, Pattaya is also renowned for a thriving local music scene. Any night of the week venues across the city play host to the sounds of rock, EDM, blues, soul, jazz, classical, reggae, pop, traditional Thai and just about any other genre.Bands and artists that can regularly be heard around town include, Helmut & Friends, Snowman, The Blues Machine, Barry Upton, and many many others. Although Walking Street is a major place to find live music during the week other venues dotted all around the city vie for punters. Regular venues that host live entertainment are, The Living Bar, Hemmingways, Noir, Differ, Rolling Live, The Stones House, The Cave, The Venue, Candy Shop, Hard Rock Cafe, Hopf Brew House and many of the resort hotels that grace the city.
Helmut & Friends Currently playing every Thursday night down at Hemmingway’s bar in Jomtien are Helmut & Friends, who are a four piece cover band led by guitarist / vocalist Helmut Schachtner. The line up changes occasionally but members have played in the States, Europe or Asia. This highly popular Pattaya band play a range of styles from Soul, RnB, Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Top 40 hits. They also play regular theme nights across town such as Best of Diva’s, 70s Disco Nights, Best of Soul, Blues Nights, Guitar Heroes etc. etc.

Snowman
Snowman has been rocking rocking clubs and stages all over the world with his brilliant Blues guitar. He made his Pattaya music reputation as one of the key figures of the Blues Factory and Mood Blues Cafe.He is currently playing at weekends with his band the Blues Machine with vocalist Jowel at the Havana Bar at the Holiday Inn.
Barry Upton Probably the best known figure on the Pattaya Music Scene is Barry Upton, and he can regularly be heard at Secrets, Soi 14, Walking street on Friday nights..One time member of Brotherhood of Man, Barry is also famous for his involvement with the band Steps and wrote the hit, “5-6-7-8” which became a tune that was played worldwide.. You can also expect to see Barry performing at grand opening nights and large events, with his 70s, 80s covers and own compositions. Pattaya is also well known for special “one-nighters” for a myriad of occasions. One such night is “Souled Out” which a speciality Northern and Modern Soul night hosted by a group of aficionados of the great music genre. The recent gigs have been taking place at the Access Inn, and many fans of Northern and new devotees to the scene make the night a great success. The event regularly raises well needed money for local charities in Pattaya, and entrance admittance includes free flow drinks. Scooters Bars in Soi 6 , LK Metro and Soi Buakhao regularly hold themed nights at their venues. These include Motown, Sca, Northern, Disco, Mod, and Retro, occasionally if you are lucky there are also live bands playing. At the time of writing Brian Thomas & The Power are performing live at the Soi 6 venue with their own brand of Soul and Motown. Another good venue for live music is the Lion Pub - mostly a sports bar it also serves food and often hosts live bands. You will need to visit their Facebook page or website to find out updated details of who is appearing and when. Thai live venues, os which there are many include Thai bars and clubs throughout the city, and each night regularly Thai and Filipino bands perform. The music can range from current Thai pop covers to rock or even Thai country music. Laid out almost like a German bierkeller with long wooden shared tables these venues are great fun and encourage audience participation. If you want an authentic Thai country cultural musical evening, watch out for the touring outdoor Issan concerts that are held sporadically through the year. If you have never been up-country or experienced an Issan concert then you are in for a treat. It is a cornucopia of throbbing Thai music complete with numerous guest vocalists performing on stage with raunchy dancers gyrating to the rhythms. These events are one big party and of course alcohol is imbibed in great quantities. Classical music has also made its mark on Pattaya with Eelswamp probably the most glamorous and authentic venue is specifically for classical performances. The 70 sqm room is designed and dedicated to chamber music and is a highly intimate venue. Recent performances have been by Helene Tysman on piano with a Bach recital. And Graf Mouja on violin performing the Tsaye Six by Eugene Tsaye. The Chocolate Factory down in Pratumnak regularly has classical performances, and those who like a touch of opera can pop down to the Hopf Brew House on Beach Road to see Lorenzo perform popular operatic arias. Because of the diverse nature of the people who both live and visit Pattaya, just about every genre of music known to man can be heard in the city. Pattaya truly is a musical destination , and residents are fortunate to have such alternatives to enjoy every day of the week.

The Perfect Pair: Shards from the Mirror
by David C Holroyd & Tracy J Holroyd
Shards from the Mirror is the third and final part of the Perfect Pair trilogy, detailing the often horrific story behind professional dolphin training. It has been an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least, and the series comes to a dramatic end as the threat from early in the first book (which echoes throughout all three volumes) really makes itself felt: “Dolphinariums don’t just break dolphins - they break trainers.” For those who haven’t read the first two parts of the trilogy by the Holroyd siblings, The Perfect Pair is the story of the semi-fictional dolphin trainer David Capello. While the book is classified as a work of fiction and must be sought in the fiction section of book stores, this is primarily a legal defence against an overwhelmingly powerful dolphinarium industry; an industry for which this third book especially is a shocking exposé of callous brutality against highly intelligent living creatures. Literally anyone who has ever worked in any company ever will be drawn into the book on a wave of sheer sympathy. The treatment of David and his aquatic charges - the titular Perfect Pair - by the Company is as barbaric as it is familiar. The constant demand for more results with fewer resources, the callous disregard for human (and dolphin) lives and wellbeing, the claiming of credit by those who have done nothing to earn it and the shameful treatment of those who do all of the hard work, all in the name of profit and the deluded opinion that it constitutes good management: It’s all vividly described by the Holroyds, with the added horror of the bloody consequences felt by the dolphins. It must be admitted that, if you haven’t read the first two books - The Enchanted Mirror and The Mirror Cracks - some aspects of Shards from the Mirror will seem a little baffling. Old characters make dramatic returns (or, in a couple of cases, are merely mentioned) without any kind of explanation of who they are and why they are significant. However, the trilogy is meant to be read together, just like The Lord of the Rings’ three parts. Taking only the third part out of context, in either case, would be redundant. Just like its two prequels, though, Shards from the Mirror is incredibly compelling and its structure of short, sharp chapters makes it very easy and quick to read. The book’s contents, however, makes reading it quite a challenge. Make no mistake, the tale is a brutal one, especially when you recognise the conflicted nature of its writer. Even as Capello begins to realise just how little care the Company has for its “assets”, he still strives to make his Perfect Pair the best dolphin show in the world. You quickly come to realise that what initially seems like a somewhat disjointed and confused writing style is actually the deterioration of Capello’s mental state. And you’re coming along for the ride. A theme throughout the three books is Capello’s somewhat baffling connection with his dolphins, earning him the nickname of the ‘psychic trainer’. As with the previous two parts, this nebulous concept is very well described and delivered - far better than we can do here, so you’re going to have to read it for yourself to find out exactly what we mean! It gets a little extreme and pushes the boundaries of credibility right at the end but, after all that the reader has gone through alongside the character, you are left more than willing to believe him. If you think that being categorised as fiction means that there will be a happy ending, prepare to be sorely disappointed. The ending is a sequence of crushing hammer-blows as what remains of Capello’s will and happiness is destroyed. To all intents and purposes, the happy ending came over 40 years later, with the publication of three hard-hitting and highly recommended books.

A recent such luncheon was held at Gian's on Thappraya Road acknowledged by all to be an absolutely outstanding luncheon
There was certainly a Mardi Gras feel to the event with pretty handmade masks and tables strewn with jewels. Even Desert Diamonds made an appearance and there was as ever, the obligatory raffle as there is always money raised for good causes at these events. (The last edition of Pattaya Trader detailed the great work the PILC do with local charities in the Pattaya area)
If all this sounds too good to miss then why not visit the newcomers coffee morning that is held the last Monday of the month at Casa Pascal ? Casa Pascal Restaurant is located on Second Road Pattaya opposite the Royal Garden Shopping Plaza. It is a very informal morning coffee and a great chance to meet some of the committee and members and find out more about the club and what's happening locally and around Thailand. FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTING AVAILABLE AT THE PRATUMNAK CLINIC
I
f you have a spare hour why not do your body a favour and go see Gay Burnett at the Surecell clinic Soi 6 Pratumnak for a Bio Resonance food intolerance test. It is non-evasive, pain-free and there are no side effects. A computer is used to measure the energy response between you and specific food types and the results will help you address areas of your general health and well-being. The actual test time is approximately 30 minutes but Gay will also give advice on diet and nutrition and for those of us in need (pretty much everyone I know) and after the test (results available immediately) give pointers that will benefit your wellbeing and general health. After all, obesity is one of the world’s greatest health challenges today with over 2 billion people now classified as officially obese and 4 million deaths in 2015 alone attributed to the condition, according to a study of 195 countries in the New England Journal of Medicine (June 12). Being overweight can also lead to serious medical conditions such as heart disease diabetes and cancer.
Also as 65% of our immune system is in our digestive tract it makes sense that identification of intolerance can be a productive means of managing our overall health. An allergy may call for immediate action but often a food intolerance is just left as a nagging complaint and not addressed. So what exactly is the difference between the two? I asked. Well an allergy is an overreaction to a protein that causes the body to produce antibodies in a rapid response with immediate histamine release. For example, people who are allergic to Gluten will experience conditions such as cramps and diarrhea if they eat wheat, barley or oats. In my particular case, when younger, I was allergic to peanuts which induced sudden swelling, a rash and shortness of breath. For those unlucky to have extreme allergic reactions symptoms can even include vomiting, collapse or a dangerous swelling of the throat and tongue. Obviously serious enough for the sufferer to investigate the root cause of the problem.
A food intolerance on the other hand triggers a chemical response with varying reaction times; hours, days or even weeks and less severe tell-tale signs such as bloating, weight gain, tiredness, insomnia, itchy eyes sinus pain and headaches. As we age our bodies may become more intolerant and less able to deal with a variety of food stuffs. Siambury’s Lighting Up The Dark Side
A recent foray onto the Dark Side bought an unexpected delight when wandering around Soi Khao Talo. A familiar orange sign came into view but this time its name was “Siambury’s”. This new store has opened to satisfy, mainly the farang residents of Pattaya who are missing their little home comforts. Some of the items stocked you might see elsewhere but Siambury’s has a much wider selection of imported foods and drinks from England and Europe than its competitors. The first thing visitors will notice are the prices. Siambury’s is more competitive than anywhere else in town and its wide selection of coveted items such as pies, bacon, sausages, sweets, crisps, pickles, sauces, drinks etc. is not to be found anywhere else. On entering the air conditioned shop the first cooler cabinet contains some excellent cheese at prices that cannot be found anywhere else in Pattaya. Not just 5 or 10% cheaper but significantly more than that. One of the items was a kilo of mature cheddar cheese for just over 300 baht.Progressing further into Saimbury’s there is row after row of freezer cabinets containing a variety of English sausages, different cuts of bacon, gammon steaks, precooked and frozen fish and a whole selection of Wok n’ Rock meals. In the centre of the store are all the bottled, canned and dry goods packed up on loaded shelves. With enticing produce and familiar names, such as Branston pickle, Patak’s sauces, Haywards pickled onions, HP sauce, Sarsons vinegar, Lea & Perrins Worcester sauce, Heinz garden peas, Harry Ramsden’s mushy peas. Spam, Fray Bentos pies, Iron Bru. Also for younger members of the family or those with a sweet tooth, there are some welcome reminders of home: Crunchie, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles, Maynards Wine Gums, Poppets, Curly Whirly, Foxes Fruits and more savory treats such as, Walkers Crisps, Quavers, Frisps and Wotsits to name but a few. Or if you are pining for some cereal in the morning then all the old favourites are there, Weetabix, Kellogg’s Bran Flakes, Frosties, Nestle Shreddies and Weetabix. Plus your favourite fruit juices, Vimto, Ribena and Robinson’s. As with any importer obviously some lines disappear from view when sold out, but return again with the next delivery. So be patient. Siambury’s is a friendly place to shop, the staff let customers browse without interference and they even offer a monthly promotion. For every 500 baht spent in store the purchaser receives a ticket to the draw, prizes change on a monthly basis but are well worth winning. If you are at a loss where to find those little reminders of home, then take a trip out to the Dark Side and give Siambury’s a try. The only problem is that you will probably want to buy the shop - so be sure to take enough money with you !

Pattaya Personality - Tino Valentino
By Kevin Cain
T
his month’s Trader Pattaya Personality delves into the exciting world of live radio. Although many of our readers may be familiar with our personality’s voice over the airwaves on Kiss FM, we thought it was time to expose the man behind the voice. Sipping my water at the Pattaya People’s offices, where our interview was going to take place, my musing was interrupted when a large hand was thrust in my direction, owned by a dreadlocked gentleman sporting a big welcoming smile. This was my first meeting with Tino, although I had seen him perform many times in Pattaya at the Candy Shop. The eloquent American southern drawl was quite hypnotic and I thought it was just perfect for the airways. Tino hails from Atlanta Georgia, and was born into a musical family with a fine pedigree. At an early age he took up the trumpet and was regularly playing in the school choir or as American’s like to say “The Chorus”. His parents were big inspirations in his musical upbringing, his father Jo Jo Benson regularly sInging in local clubs solo and in bands. But it was Tino’s mother, Lil’ Dot that was the real star of the household.
Even in her early 20’s, Lil’ Dot was regularly singing alongside great luminaries of the time, such as Millie Jackson and Clarence Carter. She would be away for long periods on tour and Tino got used to the life of a musician’s son. Lil’ Dot’s voice was deeply soulful and sometimes it was compared to the great Betty Wright’s. Further on in her long successful career she appeared with, James Brown, Prince and Michael Jackson. At the tender age of eight all this did not mean very much to a young Tino, but music was very much in his blood and would continue to shape his life in future years. At the time Tino did not really wish for a future career in music and would rather have taken up law studies but karma, opportunity or chance seemed to take a hand and to point him back onto the musical road of life.So it was that Tino graduated from the Performing Arts High School which he was enthralled by. Everywhere he looked: down corridors, in doorways, on stairwells people were singing, dancing, playing all manner of musical instruments and generally enjoying life. It was around this time that Tino got together with a pal and entered a talent show as a singing duo. Although they did not win the competition they were encouraged by the reception the audience gave them. Tino entered further competitions by himself and by this time was starting to attract a great deal of attention. He got signed as a member of a R&B group called "NV" to a record/management deal with pop/R&B star "Pebbles" of MCA records. This signing came through a friend "Chip" from the Laface Records hiphop group called "Highland Place Mobsters".At that time "Pebbles" was also manager of the superstar pop/ R&B group "TLC". NV recorded 1 song and then broke up. Then a life changing opportunity came along when a man called T C Jason, who was a member of the immensely successful S.O.S Band, approached Tino after a gig. He was blown away by Tino’s vocal performance and wanted Tino to join him in Japan where he had a contract to play with his own band.

Tino refused the offer but after consultation with his girlfriend and consideration of the lucrative offer of actual pay, Tino’s first foray as a traveling musician took place. The amazing culture of Asia and the lifestyle of a musician suited him down to the ground. After roughly eight years singing in clubs around Japan, a Thai entrepreneur happened to catch one of the shows, and in 2010 Tino was invited to Pattaya. The destination was the infamous Walking Street and the venue was one of the best clubs in town, Candy Shop. The musical genre of Hip Hop was perfect for Tino as it was the theme music to his youth. Tino loved Candy Shop and in return the Candy Shop punters loved Tino. Everything about the club, it’s style and atmosphere suited him down to the ground and a great partnership was formed. It was whilst playing at the Candy Shop one night that Dan Johnston of Kiss FM watched him perform and not for the first time in his career, Tino’s awesome vocal performance prompted fate to play another hand. A few weeks later Tino was on the airways as a Kiss FM presenter, radio was something that Tino had been fascinated with since being a kid in Atlanta and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Since then Tino has not looked back. The genial American smiles when he imparts that he has just founded his own record company here in Pattaya. Gott Money Entertainment is Tino’s latest venture and is really the driving force behind Kiss FM. Tino Turnup can be heard on the Drive Time show on Kiss FM every day between 4pm-7pm and he also hosts the Saturday Street Vibez Hip Hop show with fellow presenter D-Kut from 7pm-9pm. Tino explained that Radio is just as much about business as music, in fact more effort is involved in the commercial side of running a successful radio station than actually planning the musical format.Surprisingly from a musician’s standpoint, Tino really enjoys the commercial side of the business which intreagues him greatly. And all this effort and sacrifice is for a reason, the money he is earning goes back home for his son’s education. Another chip off the musical block is formulating as we wonder whether he too will follow in his family’s footsteps ? What grand steps he has to follow in !
Tino feels that he is in a position to influence the younger generations growing up due to the informative platforms at his disposal. His dream of working with radio has come to fruition and he wants to push kids as much as he can to achieve their goals. So what is in store for the future? Tino wants to concentrate on his current projects and to build up Gott Money Entertainment to be a successful record company. His gigs at the Candy Shop will still continue and his regular forays over the airways will be broadcast loud and clear.
Fast forward to today,Tino's stage name is "Toi Boi" and you can find him on YouTube VEVO and Facebook:toiboimusic. Website:www.toiboimusic.com Available on iTunes and all music outlets online for download.

Wine In Australia - White Wine
A
ustralia is now a recognised producer of some of the world’s best wines, it has won many awards for its quality produce and considering the relatively short life of the Australian wine industry this is quite some achievement.Literally hundreds of grape varieties are now being grown in various locations, and many new ones being added each year. The Australian nation has caught up with this trend and their palette’s have grown to appreciate the finer wines being produced. Following on from our previous article about red wine in this one we focus on the whites and our attention dwells on the places and types of white wine available.
Chardonnay Some people say that Chardonnay is the prince of white wines as it is used in the production of Champagne in France and many sparkling wines across the world. Chardonnay is extensively grown throughout Australia’s wine regions, and depending on the terroir and ripeness of the grape, it can range from citrus and herbaceous notes to a deep tropical bouquet.
Sauvignon Blanc This grape has been flourishing in Australia during the last decade, especially in the Hunter Valley, the Margaret River and in some parts of Tasmania. In New Zealand of course the Marlborough region is famous for producing elegant Sauvignon Blanc wines, due to the ideal conditions.Early in its production it has aromas of green apples, later maturing into a sweeter flavour reminiscent of pears and apricots. Sauvignon Blanc is often blended with Semillon in Australia to enhance the complex nature of the wine.
Semillon The Hunter Valley Semillon is some of the best produced but the grape has also found its way to the Barossa Valley and the Margaret River. Semillon is a versatile grape that can be blended and has a wonderful deep honey and apricot flavour.
Riesling The Riesling grape has been grown in Australia since the 1800’s. Firstly it was a big success in the Barossa Valley, where German settlers first planted it in the 1950s and because it ripens in distinct stages, it can be very useful for wine making.Unripe the wine produced is tart and has a mineral nose, moving almost to rose petals when it is fully ripe.
Pinot Grigio & Pinot Gris Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape variety. Grigio stems from Italy and produces a crisp, and light wine. Pinot Gris originates from France and is fuller of body and better for putting down.In Australia these grape varieties have been most successful in cooler climates and places such as, Tasmania, the Mornington Peninsula, the Adelaide Hills and the Yarra Valley.
Verdelho Originally from Portugal, this grape flourishes in the Margaret River and the Hunter Valley. It is often used as an alternative to Chardonnay and offers a fruity and crisp palette and is an excellent accompaniment to spicy food.In recent years Australia has expanded these six varieties with Chenin Blanc, Marsanne, White Burgundy, Boignier and Chablis..

The Ten Best Tennis Players Of All Time With W imbledon and Strawberry Teas percolating through the mind it seems apt that an article reflecting one of the world’s oldest games is due and so we take a look at the ten greatest tennis players of all time, five male and five female. The selection has been made using a combination of factors including the amount of titles won and prize money accumulated. Obviously because the modern game has much more prize money floating around than in Don Buge’s day, we have had to employ the Pattaya Trader Adjudication Panel to decide. (If you do not agree, please post on FB or write and tell us)
The Five Greatest Male Tennis Players Of All Time 5. Novak Djokovic
4. Rafael Nadal
Novak had to feature on this list and it was an easy decision to include him, the Serbian has amassed 66 career titles including 12 Grand Slams. (6 Australian, 3 Wimbledon, 2 US, 1 French) Djokovic still has time on his side, and if he can remain injury free then who knows he might climb higher.
2. Pete Sampras If it was not for being hampered by the recurring problems Rafael has suffered with tendinitis, he may have well won a great many more titles than he has. Nicknamed the “King of Clay” he is generally considered the greatest clay court player of all time.
3. Rod Laver
Sampras was number one ranked player for six consecutive years and when he won his 14th Grand Slam it was a record at the time. He played in an era that threw up epic battles against Andre Agassi, and captured the tennis world’s attention as well as the spectators’.
For our younger readers Rod Laver may not be a familiar name as he retired in 1979 and it is difficult to consider how he would have fared against the players of today but his record stands for itself. He was rated world number 1 for seven straight years (1964-1970) and won 200 career titles, more than anyone in the history of the game. Considering that for much of his career the Grand Slam tournaments were only for amateurs, his record is unbelievable.

1. Roger Federer Nobody can possibly dispute our choice for the number one position. His record of 18 Grand Slam titles is beyond argument and his 302 weeks ranked as the world number one is an open-era record. Some of the up and coming newcomers can find ways to beat the master, but even so his epic 2017 Australian Open victory proves he can still beat the best.

opponents down. With 59 Grand Slam titles including singles, doubles and mixed doubles she was also a very versatile player. Although a formidable singles player, she will probably best best remembered as one of the greatest doubles players of all time, winning 31 Grand Slam Doubles titles and 10 Grand Slam Mixed Doubles.
2. Steffi Graf
The Five Greatest Female Tennis Players Of All Time 5. Margaret Court There are some people who would pick Margaret as their number one, and undoubtedly her record speaks for itself. Margaret Court won 24 Grand Slam Singles Titles and 192 career titles. She was the first woman in the open-era to win the Singles Grand Slam in 1970, and she is one of the first athletes to incorporate weights and fitness training into her tennis regime.
4. Chris Evert
Steffi Graf’s great strength was that she was just as good on one type of surface as another and consistently good. Her record of 377 weeks being ranked as the world’s number one is a record for any tennis player, male or female. She was inducted into the tennis Hall of Fame in 2004, probably due to her career from the late 1980’s to the mid90’s when nobody surpassed her. When she retired in 1999 she was still ranked as number three in the world.
1. Serena Williams
Chris Evert oozed class and grace when she was on court, and was one of formative players to use a baseline game. With her powerful two-handed backhand, she dominated the women’s game from the mid-1970’s right into the early eighties. She still holds the record for reaching the most Grand Slam singles finals with 34, winning 18 of them. She had a career winning percentage in singles matches of over 90 percent.
3. Martina Navratilova Almost the opposite of our former player, Martina was one of the toughest competitors ever to play the ladies game. She was extremely fit and utilised a huge serve to grind her
www.pattayatrader.com
Our choice for the women’s number one slot is as per our one for the men’s in that it cannot be disputed. Serena Williams is without doubt one of the strongest and most powerful women ever to play the game. Together with her sister Venus, the Williams sisters have dominated the ladies game for almost twenty years, steam-rollering every opponent. Amazingly at the age of 35, Serena has regained the number one ranking in the world, a ranking that she first achieved way back in 2002. Her game has adapted to withstand the tennis test of time, highlighted by her Grand Slam victories spreading over an eighteen year period. This makes her the undisputed number one female tennis player ever! So what did you think of our top ten selection? Are there any players that you consider should have made it? Or has the Pattaya Trader Adjudication Panel come up trumps with their selection?

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold High Scores the Order of the Day
A
nother day dawned as golfers descended en masse on the Phoenix Gold course. The Lakes & Ocean nines were the allotted combination for a field of 116 keen but apprehensive players, including a good turnout of 18 Ladies. Weather conditions were a little threatening and following some heavy overnight rain, the decision was made to have preferred lies through the green, to help avoid the dreaded mud ball. In the event there was only 1 light shower over the course. PAGS had negotiated free cart for all players, although the course had a cart path only policy on the day. Steve Truelove (9) was the undoubted star of the day, winning both the Low Gross with a fine 73, the A Flight nett, along with the maximum 2 technical prizes. Steve has been struggling with his game over the past few months, so his 44 points was a long awaited return to form.
The Ladies placings were hotly contested, with May Suriye (17) shooting her best score ever to sign for an outstanding 44 points, to go with a technical prize on #6, while Noi Emmerson (22) made a return to form with 41 points. The lowest winning score of the day was in the C flight for handicaps 21> with Robert Baird (30) edging Kenny Chung (26) on countback, after both signed for a solid 41 points. Phadungsak Pakaree (28) picked up 3rd spot in C Flight with 40 points. B flight for handicaps 14 – 20 was another high scoring affair with Lee Adams (20) on 44 points ahead of Anders Ekberg (20) & Myles Knowlson (15), both with 42 points. Anders edged Myles out on countback 22/20, although Myles did also collect a Near Pin on the short Ocean 7. As mentioned previously, it was Steve Truelove leading the way in A flight with his spectacular 44 points, while Jens Olsson (7) played well to record 40 points, ahead of Frode Brandt (10) got the bronze position with 39 points. Notable performances on the day were also seen from Todd Doss, Ken Price, Nantaporn Rukkid & Dennis Paul with their 2 technical prizes, while Mark Johnson wrote his name down on 3 successful technicals, although only collecting the daily maximum of 2 prizes. Dave’s team once again did a sterling job in the tucker department, with plenty of non golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening. As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from Hemingways Jomtien after a PAGS presentation. I am confident we will all look forward to next event at Phoenix.

“If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.” Ferdinand Porsche
A
fter all the pre-season hype the time had come for the Unixx – TRMotorsport Racing team to take its rightful place in the Supercar Class of The Thailand Super Series. The new Porsche 911 (997) Generation 1 arrived in the Kingdom at the end of March and was quickly transferred to Bangkok to have all the modifications installed by the ever efficient B-Quik Racing mechanics and engineers. Our first glimpse of the car in its new Unixx – TR Motorsport livery wasn’t until the Wednesday before the first Race weekend of the season. The Danish Dynamo Thomas Raldorf had just three practice sessions to get used to the car and setup before qualifying on Friday afternoon.
Free Practice The three sessions were the first time Thomas had been in the new Porsche and it showed as he tentatively eased the 911 around the Buriram circuit to get a feel for the car and the massive increase in power compared to the old Blue Blur Honda City. Thomas became more confident and pushed harder with each lap that passed and was putting in some good times although still not sure how the car should feel, luckily Porsche Academy's driver Will Bamber was on hand! Will jumped at the opportunity to give the 911 a test run and provide some vital feedback to the team. After only just one lap Will came straight back into the pits to report on several issues with the car, Sven Thummel Chief Mechanic of TR-Motorsport listened intently as Will went through the issues, Sven made detailed notes about these issues which would be worked on later after the session had finished. After the quick debrief Will completed a few more laps for the team clocking a fastest time of 1.45.314. As day one of practice finished the B-Quik mechanics got to work on all the issues mentioned while our mechanics were in close attendance assisting, watching and learning as much as possible about the new Porsche.

The following day Thomas took to the track again and immediately reported back that the car was feeling a lot better and everything seemed to be working as it should, after a couple of warm-up laps Thomas quickly got up to race speed. Now was the time to find the limits, Thomas pushed and pushed to see how much he could squeeze out of the car. During the previous day's testing Will Bamber had gone into turn four 16kmh faster than Thomas and this is where he had to improve if he wanted to post a competitive qualifying time - and improve he did by taking turn four just 1km slower than Pro-Driver Will. As the final practice session came to a close Thomas found himself in second place on the timing sheets with a very impressive 1.46.623, an outstanding achievement taking into consideration the amount of track time the team had, next up was qualifying.
Qualifying Before the week began the team discussed expectations for the first races in the Porsche, it was agreed that a top 5 finishing position in both races was more than achievable and anything above that would most definitely be a bonus. The car was meticulously checked over by both sets of mechanics and prepped for qualifying, a new set of Yokohama Slick Tires were bolted on and the car was good to go. Qualifying began at a very humid 5 pm with the average temperature still around 34 degrees Celsius. The opening laps saw only a few cars on track with Thomas going fastest early on, as the session counted down the more seasoned drivers entered the fray setting even faster times with the lead times changing position many times throughout. The team on pit wall and in the pits could see the live timings. On lap four Thomas was faster over the first two sectors only a slight mistake cost him Pole Position and when the chequered flag eventually came out Thomas and his Porsche 911 had qualified third on the grid with a time of 1.45.033 just 0.186 off the Pole Position time.
Race 1 As Race One of the new season quickly approached there was a great sense of excitement, tension and nerves permeating throughout the pit garage. Such was the tension that all guests and sponsors were politely asked to leave the immediate area to allow Thomas and the team some seclusion helping them to focus on the task that lay ahead. After a few minutes, the shutter was raised and the Porsche roared out of the garage and onto the grid. Each of the Super Car races this season began with a rolling start, however, for this particular race it was deemed that three rolling starts were required. At the first attempt the lead 72 car seemed very confused as to where pole position was and meandered into the middle of the track causing a false start, the driver still wasn’t sure on the restart and yet another false start was called. However, third time lucky was the case as the cars roared down the straight heading for the first corner and that was where Thomas dived up the inside leaving the other cars in his wake. From that corner onwards Thomas began to pull away from the rest of the field and had soon built up a three-second gap from the Toyota GT 86 in second place. With three laps to go and on the brink of a debut win tragedy struck! A warning light on the dashboard indicated the fuel pressure was dropping, this resulted in a loss of power from the engine so Thomas pushed even harder to maintain his lead, but it was inevitable the chasing pack would catch him and on very last lap both the 2nd & 3rd place cars were right under his gearbox. Thomas fought bravely to hold them off as long as possible, he ran wide at turn four letting the Toyota get level and as he entered turn five the cars were three abreast with Thomas on the outside. The Toyota driver lost the rear end of the car in the corner and as he corrected the slide he inadvertently touched the Porsche's wheels forcing Thomas wide and onto some radiator fluid that had been left from a previous race incident. The resulting loss of traction caused the car to spin out leaving Thomas facing the wrong way round in the middle of the track. The Danish never give up and Thomas quickly fired the Porsche back up and completed the race finishing 5th which then became 4th after the 72 car was given a 30-second penalty for causing the false starts. As you can imagine the

team were crestfallen after coming so close to a debut win but as we have experienced so many times in racing you can never be sure of a win until you pass that chequered flag. Although dejected there was still work to do as overnight the Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter were replaced and an extra 30 litres of fuel added to hopefully fix the fuel pressure issue.
Race 2
The team arrived at the track on Sunday full of confidence for Race Two. The heartbreak of Race One was now nothing more than a distant memory and focus was aligned to the task at hand. Thomas would start from pole due to getting the fastest second lap time in qualifying, so the odds were most definitely in the team's favour! As the cars came around the last corner two by two the lights went green and Thomas made an incredible start. Unfortunately, two of the following pack didn't do the same and collided into each other causing the safety car to be deployed. Being behind the safety car in the new Porsche is a world away from doing the same in the Honda City and Thomas needed to keep the tires warm and the engine cool. The safety car pulled in and again Thomas roared away from the pack in some style, after five laps the pit team told him the gap was a massive five seconds and to ease off a little. Thomas replied that he wanted to push on and increase the gap just in case the fuel pressure issues came back, and come back they did! Just two corners after Thomas said he would push on, the Fuel Pressure light came on again along with that feeling of Déjà vu. Within two laps the five-second lead was gone and once again the Toyota GT 86 was all over the back of the limping Porsche. It would have been impossible to hold the Toyota off for the next 2 laps so instead of fighting, Thomas let the driver through and slotted into second place with a very healthy lead over third place, it was the sensible thing to do and would guarantee some good championship points. Thankfully no other issues transpired and the team finished with a very good second place. Although they fell agonisingly short of the top step in the drivers’ championship they did claim top spot in the Team Championship with the cars finishing 2nd and 3rd. With six races still to go and as Thomas gets more track time with the car the team are well positioned to mount a serious challenge for the championship.
Next Unixx – TR-Motorsport will next be in action in the Honda Integra DC-5 in the TOYO 3K Championship at Bira Circuit Pattaya June 10/11 and the next races in the Porsche will be at the Bang Saen Festival of Speed for Rounds 3 & 4 of The Thailand Super Series June 29 – July 2nd. WOULD YOU LIKE TO RELEASE MONEY FROM YOUR UK PENSION? - QROPS v SIPPS QROPS
Despite the changes to UK legislation it is still possible to transfer your UK pension offshore in what is known as a QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme). However, for this to be possible it has to meet certain requirements set out by HMRC. Following this year’s budget, HMRC has put a 25% tax on pension transfers to QROPS schemes but despite this there are still many benefits in taking out a QROPS. Firstly, you are allowed to take a lump sum free of tax when you have reached the age of 55 usually 25% but in certain circumstances it might even be 30%, depending on the length of time you have been living overseas. You are then free to take as much money as you wish from your QROPS once the initial tax free amount has been taken. However, this is subject to UK taxes unless you have been overseas for a period of more than 10 years. Also on your death you are allowed to pass the pot tax free to your named beneficiaries. In the UK depending on what type of pension you have, you could be taxed at a rate of 55% or even worse lose everything. One of the biggest advantages of a QROPS is in the scope of investment choice. Very often a UK pension has a very limited choice of funds and performs very poorly. A QROPS on the other hand offers the broadest possible selection of investments. With a QROPS there is no requirement to buy an annuity. If you leave your pension in the UK the annuity yields have been at historically low levels. However the yields with a QROPS are far higher. A UK pension is subject to UK tax. Even an average person could be subject to a 40% tax rate. However, if your QROPS scheme were to be to transferred to say Gibralter for example, even though you live in Thailand as a UK citizen you would only be subject to tax at 2.5%. A big factor to consider is what happens if you have an annuity in the UK if you die. Depending how it has been set up this could mean that when you die the pension dies with you. However, with a QROPS, on death you can bequesth the entire amount left to whoever you want with no penalty. An alternative to a QROPS is a SIPP ( Self Invested Pension Scheme ). In this situation your pension remains in the UK but the greatest advantage is that you have complete control over what you invest in. It could be funds, stocks and shares, ETFs ( Exchange Traded Funds ) or even property. Also there is no requirement to buy an annuity so as to make retirement options more flexible. Transfers from more than one pension are allowed to consolidate numerous plans under one roof. 25% can be taken tax free after the age of 55 The remainder can be taken if desired but is subject to UK taxes. Most pension plans are provided by insurance companies which generally do not have the best record for investment purposes as well as crippling high fees. SIPPs generally perform better and have lower fees attached. To access your UK pension whilst living abroad the first thing to do is find out how much your pension is worth and what type it is. Also discover how many pensions you do have. Most of us change employment several times during our lifetime and many people have forgotten that they might have some tucked away. I can think of one particular example where we found a pension for someone which he didn’t know he had and it was worth £250000! That is what you call a pleasant surprise. Once this information is found out you are then free to decide whether to leave your existing pension where it is or transfer it to a QROPS or SIPP. We are more than happy to offer free and impartial advice. Part of our service is to trace missing or forgotten pensions. If you are wanting to access the funds in your pension we can guide you through the procedure with the minimum of fuss but with the utmost professionalism. Last Will and Testament The Last Will and Testament is a declaration of intent concerning disposition of your assets or other matters which shall take effect, according to law, after your demise. The document will detail your assets in Thailand, such as property, bank accounts, vehicle and personal valuable items, designating who shall inherit and control them according to your wish to prevent unnecessary complications and quarrels between family members. In Thailand, when a person dies without a Last Will and Testament, the intestate’s assets are distributed according to the law. As stipulated in The Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand. Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order: 1. Descendants 2. Parents 3. Brothers and sisters of full blood 4. Brothers and sisters of half blood 5. Grandfathers and grandmothers 6. Uncles and aunts The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as the divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights of a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (Sin Somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the rest will be distributed accordingly.

Different jurisdictions usually require different formalities for the wills. Having a will drafted in your home country to cover all your assets in Thailand may be troublesome to your family, especially in the event that the will might be invalid in Thailand courts should it not conform to the Thai law requirements. A will that will cover all your assets in Thailand should be prepared and signed on Thai Territory. This is to make sure that Thai rules on the form of your Last Will and Testament apply. Your Last Will and Testament shall cover these important points: 1. Specifying the assets in Thailand 2. Appointing an Executor 3. Naming the beneficiaries of your assets 4. Instructing how the assets shall be distributed to your beneficiaries Overall, the Executor will administer your estate and make sure that everything is according to the terms of your Last Will and Testament. Appointing a trusted executor is an important decision that needs thorough consideration. The responsibilities of an executor include making sure all assets are accounted for, all existing debts and tax obligations are paid, and that all the remaining assets are correctly distributed to the beneficiaries according to your will. Most people tend to choose family members or close friends to act as an executor, it is important that he is someone you can completely trust. If you don't have a friend or a family member with the necessary expertise, consider hiring a lawyer, accountant or similar type of professional to act as your executor.

Get addicted when you’re young. “ When you retire it won’t matter how much you’ve earned during your working life, all that will matter is how much you’ve saved ” This came to mind watching young and middle-aged farangs in Walking St. I wondered how many of them had a regular savings habit and how many just squandered their earnings as they came ? Let me ask you how many retired people you know who have no regular savings and just get by on state pensions from their country of origin? If they had been forced to make pension contributions while working, then their golden years would not be impoverished ones. And do you really think the young people who have a chance to make a difference to their own future will suddenly get enthusiastic about providing for themselves? Some will but a large swathe will not catch the savings addiction. They will make many excuses. Can’t afford it right now, I’m leaving the country next year. I’ll sell my business when I retire. I’ve just
bought a condo. Over the years I’ve heard them all. They really fail to see that the only person that can look after the old person that they will one day be is the young person that they are now. Mind you ex-pats have not been helped or encouraged to start regular savings for their retirement by offshore pension providers. The charging structure in many cases has been so high that charges have outweighed the benefits of tax free growth. In the past when people asked for regular premium products (a rare occurrence) I pointed out the punitive charges but I have never actively solicited regular premium business. The reasons I have already stated. Not good value for clients and charges too high/ Now however that has all changed. The big offshore providers have moved the goalposts and their regular premium business is now the best low charge deal that has ever been offered to offshore clients. One key to future prosperity is to hide money from yourself. Another old saying goes- “If the payments don’t hurt, the pension will”. Be generous with your monthly contribution. After all it’s to yourself. For those without a pension provision it’s time to take responsibility and forget the excuses. Take opportunity to change your future from penury to financial stability. Get addicted to saving if you want to improve your life Like all things in life the choice is yours. Don’t get to be a pensioner in Pattaya complaining about the hot weather, the falling value of sterling and the cost of Complan david.thrifty@yahoo.com
