| COVER STORY
By Green Pattaya
Do you really need the plastic spoons and straws handed out to you by convenience stores? In Thailand about 2 million straws are dispensed every day from 7-Eleven stores alone. That is about 400km of plastic which is enough to circle the island of Koh Pha Ngan 10 times! Add in the other outlets, shops and supermarkets and that probably adds up to 2000km a day: about the distance from Chiang Rai to Phuket! Green Pattaya simply asks all retailers big or small, as a first step, to stop handing out plastic straws gratuitously. Can we experiment with the idea of letting customers help themselves? If a customer buys a drink let him or her choose whether or not to take a straw.
Why don't we simply say no when offered straws? The straws will be here for 100 years and even when broken down are eaten by animals and fish which if not killed by the plastic itself, can be poisoned or even get cancer as a result of consuming them. Also the major problem with plastic is its capacity to “travel” as it is lightweight. It floats, can travel great distances and as such can even end up in turtles' nostrils. Green Pattaya have now been cleaning Pattaya for 4 years with over 60 cleanings and during that time have found that most of the straws the volunteers pick up are unused and wrapped, whether distributed separately or pre-attached to cartons. So what that tells us is that customers are simply not telling the staff at the tills that they do not need a straw, rather letting them automatically put the purchase in a plastic bag with a plastic straw that will then be thrown away. And what about plastic bags? Many countries are now charging for plastic/carrier bags to encourage people to take a bag for life for their shopping and simply think before they take a bag as to whether they definitely need it. In Thailand it is estimated that there are 10 million customers a day throughout the 7/11 stores alone and if they all take at least

one bag that equates to a combined area the surface of more than 100 football fields every day!
So the message is clear Stop Think Refuse!
If you don't need a straw or plastic bag don't take one. Why not use social media to try to push our message all the way to 7-Eleven’s headquarters. See our campaign for bringing this to their attention at the following link: https://www.change.org/p/7-11-stop-the-hands-outs-ofstraws-in-thailand It’s not much, but like any action it could change things if many people decide to follow. It’s an important fight. It’s not even a question. It’s already too late to ask yourself if you should do something about plastic waste. Action is needed now and as a customer we have the power to change things! Let’s keep our planet clean together! Handy Tips For Everyday Energy Conservation
from hot to warm for two loads per week can save nearly 500 pounds of CO2 a year and if you have a dishwasher make sure it has a full load when you use it..
• Air conditioning
Overheating or over cooling rooms can be a complete waste of energy. In Thailand there will be more reason to cool rooms than heat them and air conditioning can account for a high proportion of your overall energy usage. This can easily be checked. Simply look at the cost of your electricity in the warmest months : April and May, as compared to the cooler months of say December and January and you will see how much you save simply from not having used your air conditioning units so much.
Saving energy and the conservation of our fair planet is at last getting the popular recognition across the globe that is desperately needed. We are all aware of the damage that the burning of fossil fuels does to the environment but perhaps not everybody is aware of the small things each and every one of us can do to also contribute.
Also with air conditioning units it is imperative that air filters are regularly cleaned so the unit does not overwork trying to draw air through dirty filters. Cleaning dirty filters can save 5% of energy used.
• Cheap Investments
• Getting Around Going to work or shopping consider your transport option. Always try to walk whenever possible and if not ride a bicycle, these two suggestions also have the added benefit of keeping you healthy. Failing this use public transport or get together with your neighbours and friends and consider a car pool. Every gallon of petrol you save avoids 22 pounds of CO2 emissions.
• Look After Your Waste and Recycle Next time you pop to the shops for your groceries try to reduce
There are widely available items that are relatively cheap and will make a considerable difference to your energy use and electricity bills. Use energy efficient light bulbs, insulate boilers, use low-flow shower heads, seal your domicile with caulk and weather stripping, plant shade trees, insulate walls and ceilings with recycled materials…….. the list goes on and on. The bottom line is that by utilising these practical tips you are not just helping the planet, you will see a dramatic reduction in your fuel bills. So it is a win win situation being an Eco Warrior. the amount of waste you produce by using reusable bags and buying minimally packaged goods. For every pound of waste you eliminate or recycle you save energy and reduce emissions of CO2 by at least 1 pound. If you can cut down on the amount of waste you produce a week by half it will save in excess 1,000 pounds of CO2 per year.
• Home Appliances Consider your energy use at home. A good place to start is with the things that you use daily such as home appliances. Turn your refrigerator down and check the seals and gaskets around doors are clean and seal tightly. Ensure your washing machine is set to cool or warm, switching

Giving your old Clothes Away to Charity
R
estart Life is a project run by the Rotary E club of the Carolinas that has helped countless people, such as the homeless, and impoverished in both Pattaya and other areas of Thailand such as Surin. Recently some representatives of the club visited the Mae La Refugee camp near the Burmese border in fact so close that you could swim across to Burma, and is the home of the Karen refugees in Thailand. Mae Lai started as just a small Thai village but is now overrun by Karen refugees and is now the largest Burmese refugee camp in Thailand. The people inside Mae La are not allowed to go further into Thailand and outsiders are not permitted to enter. From the outside all you can see are tightly packed straw houses; most of them without power or other facilities. Those who have managed to escape the camp are spread out along the border and on the mountain in the Tha Song District with different tribes of Karen, such as the Kayan people, inhabiting this area. Some of these refugees now have passports whilst others only have refugee documents. There are a fortune few who have managed to get all their documents in order so that they can work in Bangkok - common occupations for the few that can work being gas station attendants, as most do not speak Thai. Wages are often no more than 6 000 THB a month or alternatively If they work in the village they can make 100 THB a day working with corn. Without the luxury of travel, they depend on the local school for education and cannot go on to university as they are confined to the village. In the Tha Song District, most of the houses are made from straw, and have no electricity so when the sun goes down, the village is pitch black. Also the houses have no running water, therefore the toilet is a hole in the ground and drinking water comes from pipes that run dirty rain water from containers on the mountain. Restart Life has been to the village three times to donate clothing, but additional trips are needed, as there are so many people living there that really have next to nothing. For example, a man we met owned just 1 shirt, and 1 pair of shorts and that's all he had. The next day, he was very happy to be walking around in his new polo shirt, brought to him by Restart Life. Although many are not well educated, they enjoy looking at Thai magazines brought to them from Pattaya and Restart Life is hoping that the readers of Pattaya Trader can help these unfortunate people with donations of their unwanted clothing.: You can drop off your donations at Pattaya Animal Hospital https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pattaya-Animal-Hospital/255378397907405 68/17-18 Moo 10 south Pattaya Road Mention Neo and Green Pattaya Also if you have any books especially school books or books for children these would also be very useful. Asalha Bucha Day
A
salha Bucha Day also known as Asahna Bucha Day is another highly important date in the Buddhist calendar and one that is respected and celebrated throughout Thailand.This special day normally takes place on the second full moon day, of the eighth lunar month. In 2016 it will take place on Tuesday 19th July and is a celebration of events that happened around 2,500 years ago. Asalha Bucha meaning to pay homage to the Buddha. Asalha Bucha commemorates the first Dharma (teaching) given by the Buddha to his first monk. This act gave birth to the Triple Gem of Buddhism; namely the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha (disciple). After the lord Buddha attained Enlightenment he spent seven weeks by the Bodhi Tree. Afterwards he decided to teach Dharma to others, in fact it was to five disciples. Kondanna, the group head was the first to achieve the Eye Of Dharma or the first level of enlightenment. He was then ordained and became the very first monk. From that very day the Wheel of Dharma had been set in motion. The Lord Buddha's first sermon was about two things that Buddhist monks should not practice;
1. Being involved in any form of sensual pleasure as this lowly nature belongs to commoners and not holy individuals. 2. Self-mortification (the inflicting of pain on oneself. as this is not the practice of holy individuals, it has no benefit.
As a result of the first sermon, celestial beings in every realm from earth sprites to the Brahma beings all sang the Lord Buddha's praises. The sound resonated through thousands of universes and an incomparable brightness pervaded everywhere as a result of the celestial powers. The Buddha preached his first sermon at a deer park and the Dharma (doctrine) of the Buddha was symbolised as a wheel. The Dharmachakra is also known as the Wheel of Life, Wheel of Law or the Wheel of Doctrine. This symbol can be seen on flags in temples and buildings all over Thailand. Also, pictures or symbols of deer can often be seen in all holy places depicting Buddha. Thai people are amongst the most religious in the world, so just as with all the other holy days Asalha Bucha is taken seriously and in fact is particularly revered. Also it is said that if you pay reverence on Asalha Bucha day you will receive good fortune throughout the year. One quirky feature of the celebration is that monks will be offered large candles instead of food in the morning of the actual day. Many young Thai men also choose this day to enter the monkhood. The day after Asalha day is another significant day with Wan Khao Phansa marking the start of the three month Phansa period which is sometimes known as the Buddhist Lent. During this period elaborate wax candles are kept burning. In the city of Ubon, there is a Candle Festival and a Candle Parade, prizes are given for the best candle designs. To mark the day across the country, ceremonies are held in all the temples. Many Thai people return to their ancestral family homes to donate offerings to temples and listen to sermons. In the evenings they will often perform Wian Tian where they walk clockwise around the main shrine of the temple carrying a candle, incense sticks and lotus flowers.

Well after telling you all last month to “Cut out the Sugar and reduce the carbs” I thought I should give a few recommendations this month to what we should all be eating – and as the Trader goes Green what better foods to look at than the Greens your mother always told you to eat up !
LEAFY GREENS
Leafy greens are full of vitamin E which is good for improving mental focus and concentration and lettuce, broccoli and spinach are all a good source of folate, which can help protect against heart disease.
GREEN TEA
Green tea has been found to prevent skin damage and contains antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory properties that protect the skin against damaging ultraviolet rays. Green tea can also help you lose weight and as with Jasmine tea is very good to drink after meals speeding up calorie and fat burn . The Japanese have for a long time been keen drinkers of green tea saying that by drinking 5 cups a day they are able to reduce levels of stress by as much as 20%.
CUCUMBERS
Cucumbers can help keep you hydrated especially if you forget to drink enough water as they are made up of 96% water and can flush out toxins – even being said, with regular use , to dissolve kidney stones.
PEARS KIWI
KALE
Kiwifruits are high in vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants and fibre and recent studies have even shown that eating a kiwifruit an hour before bed time can lead to significant improvements in the quality and quantity of sleep.
Kale is in plentiful supply here in Thailand and is now very popular worldwide because of its many health benefits such as maintaining healthy muscle tone as well as being said to reduce the risk of many cancers. Pears can help reduce constipation as they are a natural laxatives loosening the stool so it can pass gently through the intestines. They are also said to help with weight reduction.
limes
Limes are also in plentiful and cheap supply here in Thailand and along with all citrus fruits are packed with provide plenty of vitamin C and therefore are great at helping get rid of colds and also help reduce the risk of heart disease

If you go to Yoga Pattaya Soi 12 off Thepprasit Road on a Saturday at 10 a.m. you will be able to take part in their beginners class taken by Raweewan Arunsathit - but don’t worry you can call her Goi. Goi is everything you want in a Beginners’ Teacher. She explains, she informs, she physically helps and most importantly she doesn’t push too hard.
Goi is certainly not a ‘torturer” she gently encourages you to “Stand tall like a mountain” “Have 50% on your right foot and 50% on your left” and during a number of squats to “ Smile” - maybe this one was a bit of a tall order! However I was suitably motivated when we were told that her sequence of stomach exercises were good for “burning fat” and most pleased when after demonstrating a pose needing exceptional balance and strength she gave an alternative stance for those of us less confident. Go see Goi - it will give you a great start to your Saturday !
Firstly I was impressed by how she conducted the entire class in both English and Thai and made jokes during the hour and a half to encourage everyone and “bring us together” Explaining that her class is based on traditional Yoga poses she went on to add that it also contained exercises she has selected and personalised-starting with the delightfully named “Sun Salutations” and ending with my favourite the ‘Cool Down”! At this point I should give you a few helpful hints. Before you set off - bring water and a towel with you and once in the studio get yourself positioned under a fan (you will thank me). However if you don’t have a yoga mat fear not there are plenty available for you to borrow. So throughout the class we went through many Yoga poses:: Cobra, Downward Dog, Warrior 1&2, Triangle, Chair, Fish and my favourite Child - a resting pose, are you beginning to see a pattern here? Yes I don’t like to overwork or over stretch I am not into torture but keen to get involved in the exercises that I see work wonders for those who practice them regularly.

A
s many top ecologists are constantly telling us, the human race is consuming the earth's resources faster than replenishing them. Thus it only a matter of mathematics before we run out of energy, food, water etc. Unless we drastically change our relationship with the planet.
One particular avenue that can be immediately addressed is that of what we eat, there are plenty of food stuffs available on earth that are replenishable. One such species are insects, commonly known as bugs. International health bodies have advised that insects can be high in protein, low in cholesterol and also pack plenty of minerals and vitamins. Here in Thailand, especially in the northern territories, people have been eating bugs for hundreds of years. In fact there are over 200 species that are edible but the Thai's regularly use about two dozen. It is not just a case of running into a field and digging up some earth to discover hidden gems, the cultivation of bugs has been passed on from generation to generation. Entomologists of Thailand have explained that the process of harvesting, cleaning, cooking and serving insects is carried out with all due caution. Older generations have taught Thai's what to pick and what to avoid, for the sake of safety and also sustainability. There are also types of bugs that are poisonous and cannot be eaten or they are in their reproductive stage and also cannot be consumed. Secondly, and just as importantly, Thais do not eat raw insects or cook dead bugs. The insects must be healthy and alive before they are prepared. Then they need to be thoroughly cleaned and in some cases parts have to be removed before being cooked. Some of the more famous bugs that are regularly consumed are: grasshoppers, house crickets, white crickets, water bugs, dung beetles, silkworms, bamboo caterpillars, ant larvae and red ant's eggs. The popular way to cook these nutritional snacks, especially by street vendors, is to deep fry them and drench them in salt and spices. But what do these delights of nature actually taste of apart from salty? According to research, but I must admit not by personal consumption, the following descriptions have been made:
Grasshoppers
Very crunchy, almost like a deep fried piece of pork skin. Slightly bug flavoured but overall very salty.
28
PATTAYA TRADER
Water bugs
Giant water bugs have a very distinct and highly original flavour similar to licorice or anise. The body is slightly juicy with a very mushy head.
Crickets
Watch out for the legs as they can be seriously sharp and can even scrape and cut your gums. There is no overpowering flavours and not overly crunchy, in fact in parts slightly mushy.
Issue 188 | JUNE 2016
HEALTH & WELLNESS
None of the bugs actually have a repulsive taste, because of the cooking technique and the added seasoning, they all taste very similar and crunchy. Apparently the best selling bug on the streets of Thailand is the cricket, with the bamboo caterpillar in second place but it is obviously all personal choice. As well as the simple, heavily salted, deep fried variety that street vendors purvey there are other popular dishes. Such as the dung beetles Silk worms Bamboo caterpillars Similar in taste and texture as silk is nam prik, which is a chilli dip. The bug Almost nutty in flavour but very soft worms, again the overriding lingering is pounded and then incorporated into and in the mouth, the texture of the dip which can be eaten with all sorts flavour is that of the salt seasoning. mashed potatoes. A bit like eating of grilled meats.Khua Kling is very popuold peanuts. lar in the northeast of the kingdom, which is a dish of stir-fried cricket mince meat with herbs, this is served with yum a sour and spicy salad.A red ant egg omelette, kai jeaw kai mod daeng, is also a delicious lunchtime meal and completely unique in texture and flavour. Simply add the insect caviar to the eggs with some minced pork to add depth and taste.
So if Thais and other southeast Asian people are enjoying this variety of sustainable and delicious food why has not the rest of the world embraced eating bugs ?. Part of the problem is that modern Westerners tend to view insects and arachnids as a famine food, something that is consumed only by the poorest of people. Therefore it is a mindset education for Westerners to appreciate the delicacy and nutritional value of this super food. Certain insects are amongst the most desired foods in Thailand and other insect eating cultures.Similar to the people of Louisiana looking forward to crawfish season, some people of Thailand can't wait for the weaver ant season to begin. These are not foods of desperation, they are foods of desire. Why are bugs considered so environmentally healthy? The overriding reason for this philosophy is that bugs are incredibly efficient at converting feed into edible meat. Back in 1991 a study found that 80% of a cricket's body is edible and digestible, and crickets are twice as efficient at converting feed into edible mass as chickens, and twelve times better than cattle. Also unlike cattle who require acres and acres of crops to keep them fed, insects can live on organic waste streams, like agricultural compost. The rearing and keeping of livestock is also a huge contributor to greenhouse gases. In addition to the waste emissions produced from clearing land and growing and transporting feed crops, cows and pigs also produce emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) simply by existing. It seems a relatively straightforward solution to a massive global problem to say that by consuming bugs as part of our diet we will dramatically help the diminishing food supply problem and lower greenhouse gases. Therefore the next time somebody offers you a delicious plate of water bugs or silk worms, simply say; Can you pass the gravy please, then tuck your napkin into your collar and dive into Sunday lunch.

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee 4 Pastrami on Rye
I
f you are like me and cannot bear to face the day without first taking time to enjoy the musky, aromatic, heady and strong elixir of early mornings, namely a strong black coffee, you will probably enjoy reading this series of articles as much as I do writing them.A barista once told me that making a perfect brew was all in the grind, measure, tap and lastly the pour, get those four components right and you are halfway there to the real McCoy. I however still think of it as a dark art (excuse the pun), as no matter how much attention I pay to the preparation of the precious bean, my coffee is never as good as the professionals. In this edition of our series my travels took me to Jomtien, and the very successful American restaurant Pastrami on Rye. Situated on 163 /164 Thappraya Road, this popular eatery produces some of the finest home made Pastrami and Corned Beef on the Eastern Seaboard. The succulent and mouth watering delicacies are made from quality local Thai beef only, it is then cured and prepared in a traditional American deli style with special spices in order to create a tender and flavourful product that tastes thoroughly authentic. But I was not calling to sample their culinary delights, I was on a mission from the misty blue coffee mountains of Jamaica in search of liquid black gold. My research had provided me with information that in an earlier life this address had been more famous for it's coffee rather than it's delicious food. almost overpowered my etiquette towards my host. After I had gulped down my first sample of the superb coffee, I was suitably refreshed enough to continue my conversation with Jim and discover the history of coffee and Pastrami on Rye. In another life Jim could have easily been a storyteller. I was captivated by his American drawl as he eloquently relayed the past telling me how the coffee shop there before Pastrami and Rye “moved in : Espresso had been famous amongst the coffee junkies of Jomtien as the best place to get the ultimate tasting coffee in Pattaya. Unsurprising as even today as well as tasting great the coffee range is very reasonably priced indeed, the popular regular pours namely Espresso and Americano cost only 50 baht, whilst the more milky concoctions of Cappuccino and Latte are only 15 baht extra. Included on the coffee menu is an exotic Mocha and a whole range of iced coffees and some refreshing teas.
On arrival I was immediately greeted by genial host Jim, who ushered me to a nearby table so we could have our chat in comfort. It was mid afternoon so my choice of Java was a long Americano. Looking around the restaurant there were one or two tables of diners, either having a late lunch or an early dinner and they all seemed to be enjoying their dishes immensely.Somebody once told me that all coffee varietals come from just two species of coffee plant: the Arabica and the Robusta. I find that incredible to believe with the wide choice of types and hybrids that are now available around the world. My musing was interrupted by the arrival of my steaming hot mug of Americano, the aroma was almost overpowering and I glimpsed at the wispy vapours emanating from the tempting dark liquid. I had an overriding desire to taste my brew that

BARGAIN HUNTER DOES KOH CHANG !
So as this issue of The Pattaya Trader is a “green issue” I thought Bargain Hunter should take a look at one of the greenest islands in Thailand: Koh Chang. So named I discovered, because of its large size rather than the fact that there are elephants on the island - although elephants there are and the occasional traffic stopping monkey ! Getting to Koh Chang from the mainland is a bargain in itself in that there are two frequent ferry services about 5 km apart leaving from the village of Laem Ngop, Trat..I travelled on the “Ferry Koh Chang’ to to Ao Sapporot pier that costs just the bargain price of only 80 baht per person (for walk ons) . Also it is a big sturdy, car carrying ferry so you can bring your car across and enjoy the spectacular views of the slowly approaching island as you make your way across.
White Sand Beach to the photo opportunity fishing village of Bang Bao with its traditional wooden stilt houses and boats moored for fishing or diving excursions. Inland some great walks to visit waterfalls such as Nang Yom in the south of the island and Kiri Phet to the North - if that’s your thing. And some great little places to catch a bite after all that exertion. One of the most traditional and long standing is Thor’s on White sands beach with a legendary green curry !
If you have decided not to bring a car then once on the island you can rent a bike or use the baht buses to get around as there’s really only one road that circumnavigates the island. Well almost, it breaks between Ban Bang Bao and Ban Salek Phet where the beautiful, hilly terrain gets just a bit too hilly. If you’re planning to visit soon Agoda and Bookings.com have many great deals and if you take the trouble to register with Agoda they will email you details of their “insider deals discounts “ and also the locations to enjoy 50% off if booking on a Friday. Once you have pitched up on Koh Chang there are plenty of beautiful beaches and coves to explore from the main drag of Or for a whole evening of Bargain entertainment Filou Cocktail lounge in Kai Bae takes some beating. There was a live band on the Friday I visited who although in need of a few “requests” to improve theirselection proved to be fairly competent and good fun. They also have regular promotions so check out their web site http://www.filou.asia/ to find out about the promotion cocktails and buckets and their 99 baht burger I can thoroughly recommend. Bargain Hunter will be back in Pattaya next month so if you have any promotions you would like me to recommend to my readers please email pattayabargainhunter@outlook.com

EATING MONSTERS
B
eing a food writer, is not all glamour and fine dining you know, this month I will be sharing some of my more exotic food adventures with you from Hong Kong and Cambodia. Let’s start in Hong Kong a few days before New Year, I have a few good friends and residents on my housing project The Vineyard who presently live in Hong Kong, soon to move to Thailand. So I thought it was time to take them up on their kind offer to show me the Hong Kong that most tourists do not see, of which the food highlight was snake soup and snake bile. It was winter time, so the perfect time to eat snake soup as it is a very warming dish, that sets you up for the whole day. I was informed that the “”She Wong Lam”” restaurant is over 110 years old and the last remaining snake soup restaurant on Hong Kong island, although many can be found in Kowloon. The 84 year old shop owner Mak TaiKong looked youthful as he handled the live snakes, with hands as quick as a mongoose. He claims his good health and youthful appearance are due to eating a bowl of snake soup every day since he started working at the restaurant 64 years ago. The soup was delicious and indeed very warming, yes the snake tasted like chicken, although more chewy and the base of the soup is made from pork bones with a hint of lemongrass. But truth be told, I wasn’t just there for the soup, snake bile has been on my bucket list for many years and today was the day to tick that box. Mak Tai-Kong quickly massages the snake to locate the gall bladder, which he then removes in seconds with a small pocket knife, it does not kill the snake. After rinsing the bladder in a small bowl containing whiskey to sterilize the organ, he transfer the bladder to a second bowl where he pierces the bladder to release the bile. Sounds delicious I know, after adding a small measure of whiskey its ready to drink straight away. By this time, I had attracted quite an audience, all of whom were locals and seemed fascinated with the whole process and this Gweilo crazy enough to drink this ancient concoction. Although the soup is still very popular, after speaking to the local clientele, it seems that drinking the bile has gone out of fashion - still that wasn’t going to deter me. The bile and whiskey mix went down much smoother and weren’t as bitter as I imagined. It instantly warmed my body as it went down and overall was quite a pleasant experience that I would recommend to anyone. Now my next adventure took me to Seam Reap in Cambodia, location of the famous 8th wonder of the world “” Angkor Wat”” to a restaurant called “”Bugs Café”” that specializes in, yes you guessed it “”BUGS”” We browsed the menu that included such delicacies as ants, silk worms, snakes and crocodile to name a few, until making our choices.

FOOD & DRINK
The final course was a safe bet of crocodile skewers marinated in amok spices, very popular in Cambodia and served with sweet potato fries, my favourites. Then to my horror I noticed that a fried ant was stuck on one of my fries, I immediately called the waiter over to complain about this unwanted guest on my plate, when I stopped dead in my tracks. As it dawned on me, in this restaurant the ant was just another ingredient in the kitchen, so I could hardly complain, especially considering what other creepy crawlies I have just devoured. So I just ordered another ice cold Angkor beer and popped the sweet potato fry plus the unwanted guest into my mouth. The next day my food poisoning had cleared up, no doubt due to the assault I had given my digestive system. What’s next you may ask?
We bravely opted for the Tarantulas to start. Six huge hairy spiders filled the plate, crunchy and soft in the middle, they are marinated in sugar and fish sauce before being deep fried and were actually quite palatable as bugs go. But certainly a scary experience and not for the faint hearted. Up next were deep fried scorpions with som tam, these were also very large and not to be confused with the tiny critters you find in street stalls in Thailand and China. They were much bigger and the thought of biting one in half made me cringe, I could imagine the contents of their stomach running down my chin which made me gag. I should also mention that I was suffering from chronic food poisoning at the time, Not Surprising I hear you say. So I did the only thing that I could and popped the entire monster arachnid in my mouth, Pedi palps (pinchers) and all. These had far too many sharp crunchy legs for my liking, which got stuck in my teeth.Bitter to taste and not much better to smell, I managed to gulp it down with the help of an ice cold draft Angkor beer, this was certainly not my favourite snack!

Well I’m off to the Philippines to finally eat BALUT, as I have been avoiding it for some 27 years since my first trip to the archipelago. If you are not familiar with Balut, they are soft boiled duck egg with a part formed embryo inside, that resemble the dead chicks you see that have fallen out of their nests, big bulgy closed eyes, soft beaks and even young feathers on the wings. Truly a sickening sight to behold, but Filipino men swear by them as a natural Viagra, so in for a penny, in for a pound. What have I got to lose?

ast month's coronation of Leicester City Football Club as Premier League Champions shocked and delighted a nation, if not the world. Leicester to be kind was considered a fairly average team with a fairly average pedigree, so in these times of mega rich clubs the question arose; How was it all possible?
Obviously the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as manager was one of the most inspired decisions in football history. He inherited a team of journeymen and youth, there were no star household names in the squad and consequently no big attitudes. He molded this eclectic mix of mostly Championship level players into a formidable unit that would die for each other on the pitch. But to actually understand the reasoning behind his appointment it is necessary to turn the clock back five years. In 2010 Khun Vichai, the man behind the King Power Duty Free Empire, purchased Leicester City for around $150 million to extinguish all their debts. He began to start to assemble a young team under the stewardship of manager Nigel Pearson.Khun Vichai was no stranger to adversity and had fought hard to build and keep his business. Even despite an attempt in 2008 by the post-coup government to revoke King Powers licenses he prevailed and in 2013 he attained his reward when King Bhumibol Adulyadej granted Vichai's family with a new surname, Srivaddhanaprabha, meaning Light of Progressive Glory. Khun Vichai has proven himself to be a most philanthropic owner with his guidance and leadership being cited as a contributing factor to the club’s success. Arriving for every home game by landing his favourite blue helicopter on the pitch, he had clappers attached to the seats for the fans to urge his team on and even gave away free Singha beer to the home faithful to celebrate their team’s success. Most unusually he flew ten buddhist monks to the UK from Thailand to bless the players and spend time in meditation within the specially designed prayer room in the King Power stadium. He immediately set about to turn the club around and under the leadership of King Power’s senior executive, Vice President Susan Whelan and the newly appointed manager, Claudio Ranieri, Leicester improved far faster than anybody had anticipated. We all now know the rest of the story. But what are the consequences of Khun Vichai's success? It has meant two things, firstly that there has been a wave of Thai investment in English football and secondly the Thai nation have embraced the English Premiership and football in general. It all started back in 2007 when former Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra bought Manchester City for $85 million and sold it a year later for $200 million proving there was good money to be made in the EPL and the investment was sound. Since then King Power bought Leicester City, and last year the Thai Union Frozen Group bought 100% of Sheffield Wednesday and the Thai shopping magnate Khunying Sasima purchased Reading.Beer giants Chang have been the shirt sponsors of Everton for ten years and their competitors Singha have close associations with Chelsea and Manchester United. So Thai love for English football is firmly underway, but is it purely for investment purposes?

It is a well known fact that owning a football club does not always make sound business sense or guarantee a return on investment. Under half of all Premier League clubs actually turn a profit and the figures are even more stark as you progress down the leagues. However it is also true that due to the massive global following of the EPL, the rights for sponsorship have risen to astronomical proportions. But what else does owning a Premiership Club bring? It is a unique opportunity for self promotion back in Thailand, raising profile whilst promoting the game to a country that until a few years ago had little interest in English football. Powerful Thai businessmen are completely aware that their association with the glamour and prestige of the Premiership significantly raises their profile worldwide and especially back at home in their beloved Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand is a very unique place in that there is a definite kudos of being a celebrity or a success in any business, the Thai nation will respect you greatly and lift your status to almost superstar level. The pecking order of where you sit in the community is taken very seriously in the Kingdom and obviously the higher up you are on the ladder the more you will be respected and adored. Unlike back in the UK when it is very common for the media and press to knock any celebrity or businessman trying to achieve. So the prospect of owning a prestigious, glamorous Premiership team offers the prospect of great recognition and status within the Thai population, the more glamorous the club the more adoration will be bestowed.
revolution does not stop here, on a recent report on the health of Baseball in the USA it was found that fans were leaving the national sport in their droves. And what were they turning to? Soccer, the English Premiership and the Champions League. The governing body of football, FIFA, may be in turmoil but the actual sport has never been more popular. More fans across the globe are cheering on their favourite teams than ever. This fervor off the pitch in Thailand for football is also encouraging more Thai's to play the sport and to follow their local teams. This was amplified with the recent success of the Thai national football team, the War Elephants. The draw with Iraq means they have topped their qualifying group to go into the final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Leicester City's triumph against adversity to reach the pinnacle of English football proves that Thailand has embraced the beautiful game with two huge welcoming arms, long may it continue.
The flip side of all this is that the Premiership benefits, not only with the expert business knowledge and money of the Thai tycoons but also with the rapid growth of the sport in Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia. The

Anyone for Tennis?

T
ime to get the strawberries ‘n cream at the ready, or pimms, or maybe even both… For June can only mean one thing and Yes, you have guessed it, it’s the start of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will be keen to ensure that they perform to the same levels that saw them do so well in last year’s tournament. Djokovic will be hoping to get a step closer to Roger Federer's record of 5 consecutive wins. The big hitting Serbian can close the gap if he wins this year's tournament.
Schedules
The dates for the most prestigious tennis tournament have been declared, asrunning from 27th June through to 12th July. Key dates to look out for are as follows: • 29th & 30th June - 2nd Round • 1st to 3rd July - 3rd Round • 4th July - Round of 16 • 5th & 6th July - Men's & Women's quarterfinals • 7th & 8th July - Men’s & Women’s semifinals • 9th July - Women’s final • 10th July - Men’s final Of course, all of these dates are susceptible to the power of the good old British summer!
Players to Watch
There are 32 seeded players in the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ singles tournaments. The list of “usual suspects” include Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray in the men’s tournament. However, look out for both Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka to make good challenges. In the Ladies tournament, things seem to be a little more open, that is aside from (6 time winner) Serena Williams. You can expect to see stiff competition from Petra KVitova, Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza in the latter stages of the event.
Interesting Wimbledon Facts!
Here a a few not-so-well known facts about the All-England club tournament. Feel free to use them in a pub quiz, or competition with your pals! We all know that Wimbledon is a major sporting event, but did you know that it is the largest sporting catering operation carried out anywhere in Europe, involving 1800 staff! In 2015, there were 54,250 balls used during the championship period. Each ball is stored at a steady 68 def F, with new balls used after the first seven games, which allows for the warm-up period. Used balls change hands at £2.50 per can of three (subject to availability) BBC is the host broadcaster with an extended agreement running from 2011 to 2017. The global audience for the game has topped 1bn people, in over 200 different territories. Back onto the subject of English strawberries, an unbelievable 142,000 portions were consumed during the 2015 championships! The retractable Centre Court roof takes just 10 minutes to close; however, a further 30 minutes is required after the roof is close to stabilise the internal environment. There are no less than 9 chiller units used to keep the air cool for both spectators and players alike and if you ever get asked how many Tennis balls it would take to fill the entire centre court area with the roof closed then you would be well to answer 290million!

Where to Watch Wimbledon in Pattaya
SPORT & LEISURE
Even the first round losers can expect to receive £30,000. As you would expect the tournament prizes are very heavily weighted towards the singles competitions. The overall prize pot adds up to £28,100,000 with the singles players winning over ¾ of the available monies. As usual there will be no shortage of top venues to watch the championships in. Favourable playing times, with matches starting on the outside courts at 11:30 am (UK) time and the higher profile games taking place from 1:00 pm (UK) time mean that Pattaya bars will be busy around tea-time as tennis lovers follow the action.
The fastest ever servers at Wimbledon have been Taylor Dent in 2010 at a zippy 148mph, followed by Venus Williams for the ladies in 2008, when she hit the ball 129mph.
The brand new Retox “Game On”, located on Soi Honey will be one of the best places to catch up with the action, as will the Lion Pub and of course the Sportsman and Frasers Bar & Restaurant in Jomtien.
Negativity in Tennis
Tennis has been under increased scrutiny in recent times with some very high profile betting and drugs scandals. Maria Sharapova would easily be the highest profile player to fall foul of a change in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s banned substances list. Match fixing has also reared its less than savoury head again, with Italian investigators suggesting that more than two dozen leading players should be investigated. It has been thought that some previous Wimbledon and French Open matches would be worthy of investigating by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).
Prize Money 2016
Prize money has a parity for both men and women in this year's tournament, despite some fairly recent suggestions by some top male players that they should earn more for their efforts. Total prize money for the Singles tournaments has risen by judy obrt 5% from last years offerings, to a whopping £21,712,000 combined. The winners can expect to pocket a cool £2M each, which isn’t a bad payday for a couple of weeks of summer work!
www.pattayatrader.com
It would definitely be sensible to find a bar with lots of screens, ensuring you have the best chance of watching the matches that most take your interest.
Stiff Competition
Of course, one thing to consider during the Wimbledon fortnight is that there is also another sporting spectacle taking place, namely the 2016 Euro Championships. With coverage for some of the games taking place at similar times you might well have to make a decision between watching the footie or your favorite tennis star!

Muhammad Ali – Simply “The Greatest”
G
rowing up in the Seventies, the Golden Days of boxing was as much a backdrop of the times as the FA Cup final or wearing flared trousers. This was the age of heavyweight boxing with such luminaries as; Smokin' Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton and of course the king of them all, Muhammad Ali. So waking up on June the 3rd to the sad news of the passing of one of my greatest sporting heroes, part of my own history also died that morning. It was the same for millions of kids from the 60's and 70's from all over the world. For never has a boxer touched so many hearts from so many different places and it is something that will never, ever happen again.
He was born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky on the 17th of January 1942 and began his boxing career when he was 12 after his bicycle was stolen. In typical Ali fashion he vowed to a police officer that he was going to whup the person who took it ! His quick hands were only surpassed by his razor sharp wit and the nickname of the Louisville Lip soon stuck. In an incomparable career Ali beat the invincible Sonny Liston in 1964 to win the heavyweight title and announce himself to the world. "I am the Greatest," he declared at the time, and soon the world would find out he was simply telling the truth. In 1984, after 61 fights and after three years of retiring from the ring, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Although he handled the disease with the utmost grace this was a unique tragedy seeing the most beautiful and graceful sportsman barely able to walk or speak. Who can forget one of his last most public acts in 1996 when the world witnessed Ali, with shaking hands, light the Olympic torch in Atlanta. It was a fitting honour as it was back in 1960 that boxing fans from all over the world saw Ali introduce himself to the sport by winning Olympic Gold. Ali is survived by his fourth wife and nine children the family have announced that they want a public funeral so the world can join together to say goodbye.
Extraordinary fights such as the Thriller in Manilla with Joe Frazier and The Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman captured the world's attention and nations took Ali to their hearts. These were not just boxing events they were pure theatre. As not only was he the best boxer the world had ever seen he was also the most witty and the funniest. You think the word was shocked when Nixon resigned, wait till I whup George Foreman's behind, was Ali's rhetoric before the big fight.
His greatest and most poignant quote was, "I am America, I am the part you won't recognise. But get used to me – black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own. Get used to me." (He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again. Hamlet Act 1 Scene 2 – Ed) R.I.P Mohammad Ali 1942-2016.
However, it was outside the ring the Ali courted the most controversy. In a highly conservative and racially divided America, Ali became a giant of 20th century American history. He fought for civil rights and was highly vocal against the Vietnam war. He rejected his slave name, Cassius Clay and joined the Nation of Islam in 1964, changing to Muhammad Ali. He was convicted of draft evasion, stripped of his title, and banned from boxing for more than three years. At this time Ali was reviled by many, but history now tells us of his forethought and wisdom.

the shore a huge snipe jumped and my line started whizzing off. I kept the rod high not only to absorb the power of the jumps but to keep the line snagging the rocks as the snipe headed for the shore line like they usually do. He started getting too close the rocks separating the main heads of the reef. Suddenly he took a whole lot of line and I knew he was on the other side of the shallow reef, I took the boat closer in and the fish still kept taking line. I told Frank it was only a matter of time as there was no way I could thread him back over the reef the same way. Sure enough the line caught a rock and it was over. Frank consoled me with “there’s more monsters here, maybe not this trip”. Twenty minutes earlier and I would have got him back over the reef, Twenty minutes later and he would not have had it, ah those fishing Gods!
H
i Folks, after a ten day blow my buddy and I finally got out fishing. A lot had happened in that ten days, like the surface fish had disappeared as well as the reef fish at Hin Pra Nang, and no bottom feeders at Hat Dawean. We trolled around our usual spots picking up the odd fish where as before we had between thirty and forty fish. Every cloud has a silver lining, all the horse mackerel (bpla thoo) were a decent size and Frank got the boat’s third bpla seecon in seven years. Locals here call a big horse mackerel a “bpla seecon” try asking why there are no small seecons! The aquarium at Rayong had some seecons in a tank with the name plaque so I know what the fish looks like. But I have never seen one at the market. Also I picked up trolling a brown snapper with electric blue spots usually a coral dweller.
He was right, twenty minutes later a got a screamer, so much 6lb braid line took off straight away from the back of the boat I knew it was not a snipe. Frank got a smaller fish on but horsed him as hard as he could so as to clear the way for me. His got off, while mine looked like he was going to spool me (run out of line) even though I had put the engine into gear and was going 1kt towards the fish! I had changed my usual trolling line of 6lb braid and 6lb fluorocarbon for 8lb + 8lb and this helped me stay calm. However the hook just slipped away from it’s purchase and I was left stomping the floor of the boat. It had to be well over a 1.5 kilo fish, just what fish I’ll never know. Two monsters gone! Have fun, Roger
So when the tidal chart showed a flat line meaning no current and the arrival of clouds of small jelly fish on the surface, Frank and I decided to go 4 miles west of Koh Larn to Hin Hoo Chang (Elephant ear rock). It’s two piles of rock connected at half tide by a series of smaller boulders. Here lie big snipe, normally a 25 inch snipe weighing a pound is a decent catch. Frank latched into a big snipe early on, “get the big net out” and I thought he was joking. The snipe ran him ragged, heading straight for the shoreline, and further towards the north end of the reef. “He’s reefed me!” the fish had swam into the shallows and turned around letting the line loop around a rock. I motored the boat around then moved closer to the shallows. Frank stood up and raised his rod as high as possible, and finally was rewarded as the line came over the rock (or the snipe swam back over) and it was game on again. After some twenty minutes a huge 39 inch (1 metre) snipe weighing 4.5 lb (two kilos) was in the net. It had a massive head and a body like a drain pipe. A great fight on 8lb fluorocarbon onto 8lb main line. It was a female snipe with eggs, they must only mature when they get this big and a 36 inch snipe weighed 1.5 kgs and must have been an immature male as he never looked like bulking out. That trip saw 10 snipe and 6 horse mackerel with a combined weight of 22 lb. Four days later we went there again as the weather forecast was good. It can very rough out there especially when the big cargo boats go past. This time it was my turn, trolling close to

hen Thailand Super Series holds its annual Press Conference to announce plans for the new season that’s a sure sign that the new racing year is right upon us. This time around the press conference took in a new location, Asiatique The Riverfront, the prestige shopping and leisure complex on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok – and it really was a fashionable setting for what turned out to be a glamourous event as the organisers really turned on the style. Asiatique is a setting that wasn’t just conducive to the attending media but also able to connect the top echelons Thai motorsport with the wider Bangkok public as well as many passing international tourists who detoured from the venue’s usual attractions to examine the racecars on show. Bookended by the ambience of the waterfront and the striking 60m high ‘Sky’ Ferris Wheel, the event put racing right into the spotlight a much needed boost for a sport that has slowly descended into niche appeal over the last few decades – but one that is very visibly fighting back. And from the banks of the Chao Phraya River it was abundantly clear that there are a lot of new and exciting developments coming this year – on multiple fronts. That was the overriding theme of the ‘Press Conference 2016’ as Thailand Super Series Vice President Preeda Tantemsapya explained. “We wanted to get across the changes, especially for Bangsaen, as we will reach FIA Grade 3 [circuit homologation] this year, we have done so much work towards this now, and also we touched on the new circuit in Sri Racha.” The good news for Pattaya race fans is that Bira Circuit – which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – is back on the Thailand Super Series calendar for its traditional and very popular September date. In fact the season will wrap up two months after that on the streets of Bangsaen, a short trip north for Pattaya fans who always turn out ‘en masse’ for the ‘Speed Festival’, which will also celebrate its tenth anniversary this year. Probably the biggest attention-grabbing highlight of the Press Conference this year was the official presentation of the newest racing category to come here, TCR Thailand, which is seeing rapidly growing interest. The first TCR cars to arrive in Thailand, a pair of butch-looking Honda Civics, were on show and they looked striking and caught the imagination of passers by. Then there were the SEATs. Two to be precise. The first arrivals had barely touched down in Thailand when it was straight to Asiatique and these Spanish factory built machines are equally as visually stunning. They lined up next to the Civics in a four strong ‘TCR’ display that was a nonstop focal point all afternoon and evening on the riverbank.

Presented to the media for the first time, TCR announced its arrival in no uncertain fashion. “Interest [in TCR] is growing,” said Preeda. “Our goal is to first have an exciting new series, one that is for a new generation of car, and at a good price.” The new world-class circuit in Sri Racha, which is already being eagerly anticipated by the motorsport community in Pattaya, is going to play a big part in the mix in the future. He reckons that Thailand Super Series, as well as the track project, is getting plenty of resonance around the world already and that’s got to be good news. “We didn’t focus on [the new track] too much as it’s not part of this year’s plans, but we hope that the new track as well as the FIA Grade 3 for Bangsaen will help the good momentum that is growing in Thai motorsport,” Preeda said. “We are getting a lot more recognition from international level drivers, not only are people becoming more aware of Thai motorsport, but with everything we’re doing they are becoming aware that we have a level playing field, especially with TCR adding to that mix, they see how we are balancing everything.” He also pointed out that the international series have joined up with the Thailand Super Series programme. “Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is coming for the second year, that’s a boost and it shows we are on the right track and can deliver a good partnership while the Caterham series will join us for the first time at the Bira round,” Preeda noted. “With the new track and FIA Grade 3 for Bangsaen we can really push our international goals and these will both provide a very good foundation.”
Thailand's headline racing category, Super Car GTM, is going from strength to strength and the cutting edge machines that fill out the grid resonate with everybody and that was the same story at the Press Conference. The video presentation put in context its strength and also gave a nod towards this year when GTM is set to get bigger, better, brighter and even stronger. There is a real narrative to tell about GTM for 2016 with so many stars and stunning cars. Young hotshot Kantasak Kusiri delivered on his promise last year and won the Drivers' title so he has to start as the favorite as Singha Motorsport Team Thailand seek out an unprecedented three crowns on the trot. Looking to wrest away the youngster’s title will be an array of top drivers such as Holden driver Craig Corliss, he is the 2015 Vice Champion, while don't count out Voravud Bhirombhakdi, the 2014 champion, who made an impressive late run last year. There are plenty of dark horses too, Sarun Sereethoranakul has got his hands on a potent Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo and quite where that car will fit in is anyone's guess, B-Quik Racing will double its Audi R8 LMS Cup lineup with entries for Henk J. Kiks and Daniel Bilski, they're sure to be right in the mix, and look out for the factory Toyota team, they will field their top class drivers in improved cars. Meanwhile there will be even more of the new Porsche 991s arriving this year. There will also be a split to create PRO-AM and AM classes and that's certainly going to help the new rookies coming into the series. That the premier class is set to be bigger, more exciting and more spectacular this year was one of the clear messages coming out of Tuesday's Press Conference. It’s really game on now for the fourth season of Thailand Super Series.

TR Motorsport Powered By Contix begin the 2016 Season
T
R Motorsport were back on the track for the first time in 2016 with the start of the RAAT – Endurance Series held at the Chang International Circuit, Buriram. The specialised car had been a work in progress for over 3 months due to uncertainty with the rules and regulations for 2016. When the documentation finally arrived it appeared that there were some major changes we hadn't been informed about regarding the fuel delivery system for each endurance car and the size of the fuel tank, FIA approved 100 litre fuel tanks were to be used, however, this type of tank cannot be found on just any garage shelf. Luckily we did have an FIA approved tank at only 56-litre capacity but this would mean us refueling twice as many times as our competitors! In getting the car ready for Buriram we used 5 different shops spread across the Kingdom and our team of mechanics worked around the clock to make sure we could make the first practice session. An electrical wiring issue tried to scupper our plans, however, the team worked 26 hours straight to fix the issue replacing all the wiring in the car. Final preparations on the DYNO and work on the ECU system were completed before leaving for Buriram, any other issues would have to be fixed at the pits. Due to confusion with the circuit owners and event organisers we were not allowed into the facility until very late causing us to lose precious set-up time. When we did get on track the engine oil temperature was far too high. It appeared that the actual temperature had been over 150 degrees for a long time - the new gauge giving the wrong information to the driver. Our lubricant sponsor LUXX oil supply us with an incredible product that was able to manage at these temperatures fora long time but the damage had already been done as the engine, under testing, gave up when connection rods seized with the crank. Not even one race into the new season and already one engine was gone‌. It would have been easy to just pack up and drive the 6 hours back to Pattaya but we are a racing team and there to race! Through the power of social media, we sourced another engine in Bangkok that was delivered at 4:30am on qualifying day. Every member of the team got their hands dirty as the new engine was fitted in record time with just 30 minutes to spare before qualifying began. All was looking good until we took the car to be weighed and checked by the scrutineers. Due to yet another regulation change the car was now underweight and with no time to find extra weight any qualifying time we achieved would not be accepted, meaning we would start at the back of the grid for the race.

We used the qualifying session to run a number of tests that showed we needed an oil cooler and a longer final drive for the gearbox, once again Bangkok came good and the parts arrived in good time.
As the race time quickly approached we had no idea of what our fuel consumption would be and therefore did not know how long we would be able to drive using the smaller 56 litre fuel tank, bearing this in mind we decided to take the safer option and drive in 45-minute stints to ascertain fuel consumption. As the lights went out Thomas tore up the track and within just 15 minutes had gone from 32nd to 2nd an incredible feat considering all that had gone before. After the first pit stop, Tony Percy took charge of the car clawing back places lost due to the relatively slow stop.
Even though the car had to make substantially more pit stops it ran flawlessly for 6 hours, each pit stop getting faster and faster as the mechanics learnt more with each one. As the clock approached 6 hours the whole team held their breath and prayed we would make it over the line, the chequered flag came out and a huge sigh of relief was given. After all the issues we had gone through the car finished 2nd in class. The willpower and determination of the whole team had got them across the line with a little help from lady luck! For the next endurance race a new 100-litre fuel tank will be installed and other tweaks to the car and engine. After the trials and tribulations of the RATT Endurance Race TR Motorsport Powered by Contix returned to the Chang International Circuit in Buriram for the Thailand Super Series. Temperatures were in the high 40’s all weekend, with the action on the track being just as hot! Thomas and the #29 car was part of one of the greatest battles the Chang International Circuit has ever seen. Starting in 8th after suffering a loss of power in qualifying Thomas knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy with some very talented drivers in front of him covered by less than one second. As the lights went out Thomas's task was compounded when he got bogged down with wheel spin. The first corner was always going to be a pivotal part of the race with so many drivers vying for the same line, luckily Thomas came through unscathed and set about fighting through the field. The next few laps were about consolidation with most drivers holding station. Thomas then began to put his foot down taking 7th place with consummate ease and then closing the gap to 6th.
second lap began a relentless Honda Jazz nipped inside to take the lead but a few laps later Thomas tried a daring move around the outside of turn 3, nudging the Honda in front but was forced onto the grass dropping him back to 5th. Thomas with Viking blood running through his veins was not going to give up, he quickly took back 4th and made his final charge for third almost gaining 2nd place. However it wasn't meant to be and third place was the final result. Thomas recorded the 2nd fastest lap time of the race to go with his fastest lap of race 1. It was a solid start to the TSS season whilst proving to be one of the team’s most challenging yet. Thomas and the team would like to thank all the sponsors, guests and fans who made the trip to support. For more information on TR Motorsport visit their website: www.tr-motorsport.com or search TR Motorsport on Facebook
Over the next few laps the positions between cars 6th, 5th and 4th changed at almost every corner! With 2 laps to go Thomas made a swift move on the inside to take 4th place much to the delight of the travelling fans. However by the end of the penultimate lap Thomas found himself back in 5th but another daring move and a mistake by the car in front, once again gave him 4th place but this is Motorsport and right at the last corner the 5th placed car had slightly better traction pipping Thomas to the line and 4th place. But we were not to be too downhearted as the top was reversed on the grid for race 2 meaning Thomas and the Blue Blur would start the next day in pole position. It was a very early start for the TR Motorsport Racing Team for Race 2 with the #29 car on the grid at 8.40am. As Thomas started in pole position a clear track lay ahead of him as the lights went out, however, such is the high skill level of the drivers in the TSS that they were 4 abreast by turn one, Thomas somehow held traction and position and charged up the main straight with the chasing pack tight behind. As the

In Thailand this track is being eagerly awaited as it has been in the raw planning stage for a few years now – finding the right site was always the big hurdle to overcome first. And it seems the concept has grabbed international attention, as Mr. Hughes explains. “The tender has been very well received, we’ve had a 100% response from everyone we’ve issued it to, they have all come back and said they will submit a proposal to us and the benefit to Racing Spirit is that they will get some really good quality bids, they’ll get a lot of ideas,” he says.
S
o how long will we have to wait? This was the first baby step, well it was the second step really as first saw a painstaking process being undertaken to find the perfect site that was also available and secondly, once it had been acquired, a full geological survey was conducted. Now it’s the turn of the designers to do their work. Six international agencies responded to the design tender and five came to inspect the site, breathe in the air, immerse themselves and feel the raw potential. Mark Hughes of MRK 1 Consulting, Bahrain, who is working with Racing Spirit senior management to choose the right design, is conducting the design tender process. During the site visit he explained that no stone is going to be left unturned in getting the right design. “The tendering process was very structured,” he said. “A lot of aspiring track owners’ don’t go through quite such a structured tendering process,” he continues. “They might pick a track designer from their reputation or from their previous projects. But what we’ve done here is have a very open tender and we’ve targeted the top track designers in the world to come and visit the site and give us a concept proposal.”
52 52
PATTAYA TRADER
He was also delighted that so many of the world’s top designers had responded positively, jumped on a plane and come to see it for themselves, with designers coming from as far as the UK in one direction and Australia in the other. “The track designers have all come to visit the site, which is fantastic,” Mr. Hughes says. “They’re very impressed with the site and we’re expecting the quality of the proposals that come back to be very, very high.” And the timetable? After the visit, the designers had three weeks remaining to submit their final proposals and Racing Spirit expect to pick a winner this month. “I will do a complete technical review of all of the submissions and the plan is to award a contract by about mid June and then it’s full steam ahead,” Hughes says. We want to start construction around October this year so in parallel to the design ‘Request For Proposal’ we will also be doing a tender for the construction company at the same time to save some time in the process.” There isn’t a fixed finishing date as yet though, and as this is a mammoth project that everyone wants to be a recognised worldwide, getting it exactly right is the main priority. Buriram set new records for building a world-class track as it was completed within a year, but this more complex project is likely to take longer. But hopefully it will see racecars roaring for the first time at some point during 2017 signalling the opening up of a glorious new chapter for Thai motorsport.

Neo's policy is to hit one place and keep on cleaning it again and again until it is spotless, that way he says people are shocked into keeping the place clean. His attempts to involve local inhabitants to help are rather hit and miss, sometimes he has willing volunteers to assist him but often the effort trying to enroll the extra manpower is simply too time consuming.
O
ur latest addition to the Pattaya Personalities page is somebody I had heard a great deal about from my time living in Pattaya. Almost all the expats I had spoken to in conversation had either met or knew about Neo's deeds in our fair city. For Neo has tirelessly devoted himself to the ecology of Thailand's beaches and streets together with the welfare of the people and stray dogs.
As if all this was not enough, Neo's love for dogs was still an overriding passion and saw him walking the city's parks and wastelands feeding stray animals and trying his best to tend to them. In 2012 he was greatly helped when he joined the Rotary Club of Eastern Seaboard and started the “Green Pattaya” initiative. The aim of which is to bring awareness to the local population of the serious pollution problem in the city and gain support for the cleaning of targeted areas. The premise being that if an area is totally clean then residents will respect it and care for it. Neo’s hope is then that if he sets the example of cleaning then others will follow his lead and continue the good work. Infact you may have noticed the considerable difference in areas such as Pratumnak, Sheraton Road and Cosy Beach that have received constant attention by Neo. In 2014 Neo joined the Carolinas E Rotary Club which is basically a world online Rotary organisation that among other issues highlights Ecology and Pollution matters. Neo promotes his clean up campaigns via social media so if you are interested doing your bit for the city then just visit his Facebook page:
His first foray into Thailand was to settle into Phuket in 2000 where he became familiar with the Soi Dogs project. It is a well known fact for those of us that live in Thailand, that the stray dog situation is almost at epidemic proportions. There is simply nowhere to house and care for the unfortunate creatures and any assistance helping to alleviate the situation is normally voluntary and part time. In 2004 he moved to Bangkok when the devastating tsunami struck. One of the biggest nations to suffer loss was Sweden as there were many “Swedish” hotels destroyed during the terrible event.Neo, a Swedish national, was responsible for giving telephone assistance and support to concerned relatives both still in Thailand and back in their homeland of Sweden. He then spent a further 6 years in Bangkok working for a dog charity and although he enjoyed his time in The Big Mango found that the air quality was affecting his health. So he decided to settle somewhere more clement and came to live in Pattaya beside the sea. This is where Neo's passion for the ecology and cleanliness of his adopted home really took a vice like grip and his vocation truly began. It is also about this time that many Thais and Ferrangs started to notice Neo on the city's beaches and sois tirelessly striving to clean them up.

www.facebook.com/GreenPattaya for details of the next clean up campaign. I asked Neo where his inspiration came from for this addiction to voluntary hard labour for the good of others? His response was a very spiritual one, that the teachings of Buddha had convinced him to attend to his deeds by an insight into the material world around him.

EXPAT LIVING
There are many astonishing ways Neo has tried to focus attention and gain aid on his projects. One included a charity run from Chiang Rai to Phuket. This mammoth 1,000km trek took almost one month to complete during which he slept and ate where he could along the way. It is even more fantastic feat if you take into account that he damaged his knee in the first couple of days running too fast with some excited school children. This injury made running uphill extremely painful and the only way to alleviate it was to run backwards ! There was even an extraordinary instance of Neo running an incline of 10km totally backwards through a national park. I don't know if this is some kind of record but personally after five paces running backwards I’m sure I would have collided with a tree However, Neo did not instead he went on to raise 600,000 baht through his sponsorship which went to a local dog shelter. His next planned sojourn is to run from Pattaya to Phuket to raise funds for his Green Pattaya Petition an awareness campaign to businesses about the dangers to the local environment of discarded plastic straws. Plus an even bigger project is planned after the run to Phuket of an epic walk from Chiang Rai to Trang in the very south of Thailand. Neo estimates that this incredible journey will take him over three months to complete and hopes that his devoted projects will benefit from his endeavours.
Neo is a highly driven individual and his whole life is devoted to improve the standards of living for other people and creatures. Everything he does is totally unselfish and for the benefit of others. He tirelessly strives to clean the very streets we walk on, to feed and house local unfortunate beings and dogs and to give awareness to vital ecological and pollution issues not concerning himself with any remuneration for all his hard work, toil and sometimes heartache. One thing is for sure, Pattaya is a cleaner and better place in Neo’s passion, care and attention. It is just a pity we don't have an army of Eco Neo's to fight the war against pollution and ignorance. He is soon hoping to an office in Pattaya to support his Green Pattaya initiative where he will also offer free sterilization for dogs.So if you have been interested in what Neo is trying to do for Pattaya and would like to add your support then simply visit his Facebook page for all his current activities. I am sure that this amazing young man would appreciate help in any way or form - certainly Pattaya would ! www.facebook.com/GreenPattaya

Change and an open mind. How many of you reading this could have imagined ten years ago that you would be living, for the most part happily, in Thailand today ? Most of us can never predict change in our lives but the smart ones know the oxymoron that applies to all our lives being that change is the only constant. Otherwise stagnation and who wants that? If we can keep an open mind throughout all these changes then our lives will be much more fulfilled and happy. I think we all know the disgruntled expatriate who made a mistake by moving here. His mind is so closed that nothing is the way he wants it to be. Its’ too hot, it’s too wet, the food's too hot, everyone is after you for your money, too many foreigners, they don’t know how to drive etc.etc. The problem for him is that he doesn’t have enough money to live in, as he sees it, his utopian homeland. The likelihood is that no place or no person or any amount of money could make this type happy, mainly because of the closed mind. I have had clients in the times of the dot com era making 100% on their capital in three months the one thing I never did was guarantee that return. It is very important for any investor to understand risk. Yes it is easy to be wise in retrospect but the truth is that unless you fully understand all the elements of risk when investing, then you are better to leave your money in the bank and let them use it to their advantage.

PATTAYA TRADER
For me one of the most important element of investing is of course the return but the single most important item to know is what would happen to my capital if the company in which I had invested went bankrupt.? However a guarantee given by a friend of a friend that in 12 months he will return your capital with 100% profit as I said, may work but which would you feel more comfortable with?- The backing of the British government or the word of a friend of a friend. If I know that my original capital is secure then I can take risk or be very conservative in the choice of funds I select. The risk should be explained by my broker and I am responsible to make sure it matches my risk tolerance. I have to remember that low risk carries with it a lower chance of loss with a smaller possible gain whereas high risk can carry a higher return with a higher chance of loss. The last thing I want to do is convey a cynical attitude like the misfit we talked about earlier. When I read in the press about people being ripped off by some financial scam the first emotion I have is pity and sorrow but when I explore the scheme they were ripped off in I can sometimes sense greed and wonder how stupid people can be.Can you really feel sorrow for people who have been ripped off by the Nigerian scam? Remember Bernard Trink in the Bangkok Post used to talk about it every week

BUSINESS NEWS
Going back to the guy with the closed mind who had an answer for everything, my friend with me that day happens to be a portfolio manager with a private London bank here on vacation, told me to give him the sealed envelope treatment. I asked him to explain. He told me in similar situations when confronted with some crazy investment idea that a client has he gives him an envelope and asks him not to open it until he has lost his money. Of course the temptation is too much and when the customer opens it written there is the line “I told you so.” My intention is not to scare people away from some excellent investment opportunities the world over but just to assist people be more careful where they put their life savings. After all if you are comfortable with the returns you are getting I think it’s a bigger mistake to move. I
believe most investors can tell a genuine offer from a scam. Think-think-think

AN EXPAT'S STORY
My wife and I celebrated our 19th anniversary last week. The length of our marriage roughly coincides with the length of our journey of discovery exploring the world (and ourselves).Married in 1997, it took three years of anticipation, trepidation, and preparation before we actually moved overseas, beginning our expat lives I was convinced that we'd moved to the place where we'd live until we died and at the time, I figured that's how being an expat worked...you pick a place and move there, and that's that. Even if you eventually get the itch to live somewhere else, you make the best of it and stick it out where you land.
I figured that's how being an expat worked...you pick a place and move there, I've since come to realize that “making the best of it” and “sticking it out” are essentially what we'd been doing back in the U.S. before our move. We were making the best of high taxes and utility bills and sticking it out through brutal winters. It was precisely to get away from making the best of it and sticking it out that we moved abroad in the first place and once we got one move under our belt, we realized there was no reason not to do it again if there were somewhere else we wanted to explore. So we spent time travelling around some countries in a little pickup truck, looking for just the right spot. This, I believe is a true test of a marriage. If you can not only survive, but thoroughly enjoy, a few months on the road in a foreign country in a tiny pickup with no itinerary in place, your relationship is made to last.
We'd become so good at moving to and exploring new places that the moving and exploring became the object instead of the destination itself. When we moved to the Philippines I figured that we'd put down roots and live out the rest of our days there. But when we got the itch to try Thailand I pretty much knew what we'd become serial re-locators. We'd become so good at moving to and exploring new places that the moving and exploring became the object instead of the destination itself. I've been replaying all this in my mind as Suzan and I celebrate 19 years of...I was going to say wedded bliss, but it's so much more. I don't know what Suzan might have done if we hadn't met and thrown in together back then, but I'm pretty sure I'd have never made it out of Omaha, Nebraska, much less live in seven different countries...and get the opportunity to explore dozens of other destinations around the world.
The life of an expat serial re-locator is unpredictable... How many more years have we left to do this? Who knows? I didn't know we'd have the first 19. But I see no reason to stop now. The life of an expat serial re-locator is unpredictable...and that's at least half the fun. Here's to the next 19, whatever they bring.

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya.
SOLUTIONS
So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily

uring and after a night of overindulgence my mind is usually cranked up to the max trying to solve world problems and save the human race. God only knows why. Naturally, in order to solve a problem first we have to gather all the facts. Then it becomes a matter of sifting through them to formulate a solution, starting with the simplest solution and working towards a more complex one if necessary. All this brings me to a question I have regarding ‘global warming’ or ‘climate change’ to which I am accused of contributing. I’m led to believe that the polar ice caps are melting because the earth is warming up and very soon much of the land mass as we know it will be under water. People currently living just above sea level are busy building boats and gathering two of every stray animal in preparation for a watery Armageddon. All this, I am told, is a man-made condition caused by me, and millions like me, sending too much greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. Well, excuse me for breathing! This is serious stuff but I have some serious questions I need resolved before accepting any responsibility for the warming of the planet. I’m hoping there are some retired scientists reading this who can give me an answer. Please e-mail this publication with your explanation. For years I have enjoyed watching television documentaries about archaeologists discovering lost civilizations by excavating ruins of ancient cities, unearthing old houses and temples, digging up artefacts or accidentally discovering a never before heard of tribe because someone dug a new well in a native village and found an old piece of pottery. My questions is this – where did all that dirt come from? How did the houses of our ancestors get buried by so much sand, soil and rock? I can understand cities like Pompeii being buried because of volcanic ash, but many of the places archaeologists excavate are nowhere near a volcano or remnants thereof; and yet they are buried under mountains of dirt and sand. I’m guessing our forebears, once they decided to abandon a settlement, didn’t deliberately go out with shovels and bury the place to hide it from us. Therefore, it must have been done by Mother Nature and, furthermore, in a relatively short period of time. Rome and Athens are more than 2,000 years old and they’re not buried under dirt, but they have been continuously populated so I assume the Romans and Athenians kept sweeping it up. However, abandoned towns and villages were buried so, where did the dirt come from and how did it get there? Call me stupid but I think this puzzle must have consequences. We are told ocean levels are about to rise and inundate low-lying coastal land. (It’ll teach all those rich bastards who bought expensive beachfront properties, won’t it? “Sir, I guarantee your property is absolute waterfront and you can fall out of bed into the ocean - literally!”) At the same time, mountains of dirt are being randomly deposited over continents

and other the land masses. Nature giveth, and nature taketh away. In my mind, this is evidence that these are both natural events which would happen in any case, with or without our meddling. It is not very politically correct of me but I am taking no responsibility or blame for what we are told is going to happen to our planet. Perhaps excess greenhouse gas emissions due to human activity have sped the warming process up somewhat but I accept no guilt. I’m Australian and the Australian government is getting right into ‘carbon trading’ and ‘carbon credit’ schemes with an eagerness unmatched since the introduction of Time Share units. So serious are they that a new federal law requires every time a person farts they have to plant a tree to compensate. Government-funded scientists are currently working on genetically-modified food to feed sheep in order to stop their flatulence (of the sheep, not the scientists). Won’t that be a conundrum for the radical greenies? Put up with GM food or greenhouse gasses - pick one. The new buzz phrase is ‘carbon footprint’. A lot of people with nothing to do are using complex equations to determine everyone’s carbon footprint according to their lifestyle. They apparently found that Aussies, on the whole, have the biggest (worst) carbon footprint of any nation on earth. So what? If nature has the power to deposit tons and tons of dirt on places we once occupied then it has the power to overcome the emissions from my occasional coal-fired backyard barbeque. Speaking of coal, what exactly is it? A fossil fuel which was once living organisms. And where to we find coal? We dig it up out of the ground. So where did all that dirt over the coal come from? Sure, it may have taken 65 million years rather than a couple of thousand, but nature certainly covered up a lot of dead forests with a lot of dirt. Finally, strewn across the sand of some inland deserts you can find sea shells and fossilized sea creatures. Why? Because that hot, dusty desert was once the ocean floor. Through massive upheavals in the earth’s crust, over time, nature produced land where there had been only ocean. How presumptuous of mankind to think we could fight against something like that. If nature decides it is time for the oceans to reclaim that land, how are we going to stop it? Perhaps when the time comes for the seas to rise we can organise all the world’s politicians to stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the shoreline to hold back the tide. If they fail and are consumed by the waves, it’s no real loss. I read somewhere that at the peak of the last Ice Age, the British Isles were covered by an ice sheet one kilometre deep. The earth was so cold that life could only exist in significant numbers around equatorial Africa. Imagine that happening again: governments would be demanding we cut down trees, burn dirty coal and breed flatulent sheep just so we could keep warm! Another beer please.
