Leicester City – Dreaming The Impossible Dream

F

or those of our readers who follow their sport and in particular the English Premier League, the story of the 2015 / 2016 season is simply staggering and quite unbelievable. Even for those folks who are not particularly sporting in nature, the name Leicester City is now cemented as a recognised name destined to be the subject of a Hollywood hit movie in years to come. Leicester City is a famous old English club that was founded back in 1884 but their record is pretty average when it comes to top flight football. Most of their history saw Leicester yo-yoing up and down the divisions and to be brutally honest their trophy cabinet was far from glittering. So their current situation has come as a monumental surprise to everybody, including Leicester City fans. Just one season earlier Leicester City looked doomed for relegation from the Premier League almost from day one. Nigel Pearson's side won six out of their last eight matches to make one of the greatest Harry Houdini acts of all time.So at the beginning of the 2015 / 2016 season they were one of the Bookies front runners to go back down into the Championship. Especially since their pre-season tour of Thailand was an unmitigated disaster with a number of their younger players being sacked for gross misconduct.Even Nigel Pearson, the manager, lost his job as a consequence of the antics of his wayward and undisciplined players. Their new owners, King Power a highly successful Thai business, were disgruntled by the club's activities in Bangkok and the new season was looming as the club were in turmoil looking for a new manager. The club's directors and owners chose a surprising new man to take the helm one Claudio Ranieri, and the appointment was generally looked at as a mistake by many supporters. The Tinker Man's last and only experience of managing in the Premiership was with Chelsea in 2000-2004. He was perceived as a European style coach who had no experience with the dog fight of a relegation battle in the English Premiership. Consequently, Leicester City were one of the favourites to be relegated at 3/1 and a fantastic 5000/1 to actually win the league title. How was it ever going to be possible for Ranieri to save them from a fate that looked almost certain? The team comprised of journeymen sprinkled with unproven youth, led by an inexperienced European manager. Not quite the recipe for success that many Leicester supporters had hoped for after their previous years' close call. But one fan named Ashley Broadley had confidence in his team's future and placed a bet of fifty pence at 5000-1 for his team to win the league. Ashley did not know it at the time but he had just laid one of the wisest bets in football history. However, after the first game of the season Ashley was not particularly enamored with his team’s performance against Sunderland. So he then made possibly the worst decision in footballing betting history by cashing in his bet and taking his 95 pence ! He must surely have been gutted to see that after the Sunderland game the Foxes went on an unbeaten run of fifteen games, with only three draws, catapulting them to the top of the table.

COVER STORY

New stars started to appear and the appointment of Claudio Ranieri looked like one of the most astute decisions in Premier League history. Names such as Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Danny Drinkwater and Marc Allbrighton all came to the fore and old warhorses such as Robert Huth and Wes Morgan were now playing the best football of their careers. Vardy who was signed from lowly Fleetwood in 2012 was on fire in front of goal. He scored a record breaking eleven consecutive goals in as many matches and was proving to be one of the unstoppable forwards in the Premiership. He was playing so well that England manager Roy Hodgson had no choice but to select him for his European Championships squad.

It became apparent even though some of Leicester players were receiving cult status that the success of the club was due to Ranieri instilling a Team ethos. All the players were playing for each other and knew exactly how much they could rely on each other’s game. They had become a complete team with no big headed egotists prancing around the park. Leicester City for the first time in the club’s history, were now actually being muted as possible Premiership title contenders. Chelsea the current champions were having a desperate season, and favourite contenders Manchester City and Manchester United were not faring much better. Only Tottenham Hotspur now stood between Leicester and their hallowed first ever Premier League title and with three games left to play Leicester were seven points clear. Spurs themselves were having their best ever Premiership season under the guidance of their young manager Mauricio Pochettino, he had galvanized a young dynamic team that were playing with flair and ferocious pace, they had become the pride of London in this helter skelter of a season. Match-day of week 36 came around and mathematics entailed that if Leicester won or Tottenham lost against their London rivals Chelsea, then the Foxes would be crowned champions with two games left to play. Leicester played first on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend with a tough away game at Manchester United and drew 1-1, which gave them an eight point lead over Tottenham Hotspur. On the Monday Spurs visited their bitter London rivals Chelsea knowing a victory was the only result that would keep them in the Title Race. Spurs led the game by two goals and looked good to keep their challenge alive but as the pulsating game progressed Chelsea scored twice leveling the score. The match finished all square and sealed the Foxes destiny. Lowly Leicester City, who had been one of the favourites for relegation before a ball was even kicked had proved all the bookies wrong. They were now Champions of the Premier League against all the odds. The Tinker Man, Claudio Ranieri had steered his group of youngsters and journeymen to win one of football’s coveted trophies amazingly with two games to spare. Next weekend at the King Power stadium on Saturday the 7th of May, Leicester City host Everton in what will prove to be one big party as they will be crowned Champions in front of their long suffering home fans. This amazing feat is one of world football's biggest ever achievements breaking as they have the dominance of the big 4 : Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea. And it is a tonic for the sport as it demonstrates with the right spirit and courage it is still possible to overcome adversity and “Dream the Impossible Dream.”

Tfi Visit Kate's Project Tfi (Thai Farang Initiative) held a Musi from the Movies event at the Venue kindly sponsored by The Riviera Group. The evening featured 2 live bands all playing music from the Silver Screen and as ever a number of guests got into the swing of things by dressing up as their favourite movie character raising 27,000 for the TFi charity fund. Due to the sluggish economy this may well be the last event for TFi however the team will continue to put funds raised to good use to help those who need it and if things pick up in Pattaya will return to host more Fun Events for Charity. The team have been humbled by the people we have been able to help One such example being Kate's Project. Members from TFI Rodney, Nick and Paul were joined by Larus and Trausti from Hyla Thailand to pay a visit to the families of Kate's Project on Soi Siam Country Club. TFi assisted these families a year ago with food and recently donated a further 50 food parcels. The parcels consisted of rice, tinned fish, cooking oil, Mama noodles and other essentials.K Noi who works at Kate's project having identified the families that would most benefit. Hyla Thailand have sponsored 2 TFi events and they were interested to come and meet the people who were helped.

SILOM BANGKOK

By Kevin Cain

B

ankok or as some people call it The Big Mango, is one of the most electric cities in Asia, if not the whole world. It is a thriving cacophony of scintillating smells, strange sounds, gridlocked traffic, stifling heat and exotic people. This cornucopia of life is crammed into a city of nearly 9 million souls. As with any major large metropolis it is divided into sub-districts / neighbourhoods. There are over 50 of them and each have their own identity, some a little more unique than others. Among the most renown are: Silom, Khao San Road, Sukhumvit, Saphan Lueng and Chinatown.

When I first came to Thailand to live I settled in Bangkok’s Silom district. It was here that my love affair with the most wonderful city in the world began and has grown immeasurably over the subsequent years.Silom in Thai actually means Windmill, which is a reflection of the area's humble origins. It has grown to be the financial hub and beating monetary heart of the city and indeed the whole country. In the nineteenth century Bangkok grew rich profiting from trade with Europe and as such the Chaophraya River with it's tributaries and canals became the main areas of the city’s urban development. However, Silom was not part of this basically remaining an urban backwater. It was a place where fruit and rice were grown and wind power used to irrigate the orchards. Nowadays banks, large corporates, insurance companies and prestigious finance houses have their flagship headquarters in Silom. But against this modern landscape with impressive skyscrapers and large public areas there is another side to Silom. It is home to Patpong Night market, which is infamous for other less savory reasons. Perhaps Patpong is only rivaled in unadulterated sleaze by Soi Cowboy in Sukhumvit and Nana Plaza. However, explore the area a little more deeply and you can find some of the best street- food in the whole of Bangkok. Together with boutique cafes, wine bars, pubs, restaurants, street vendors, chic shopping and some of the best hotels in the city. Also the area is one of the most accessible in the whole of Bangkok being serviced by the underground MRT service with Silom and Lumphini stations as well as the Sky Train stops of Ratchadamri, Sala Daeng and Chong Nonsi. Bangkok is not the easiest of cities to get around and if your destination is not on the MRT or BTS service then it can take hours by road to get anywhere. I was fortunate enough to have an apartment adjacent to the Chong Nonsi BTS stop on Nardhiwat Rajanagarindra Road. It afforded me great flexibility for either getting around the city whilst also being central to the Silom / Sathorn area where there were many good places to explore just minutes away by foot. For example : The magical Lumphini Park ,only as stroll away, where one could relax and take a break from the incessant drone of the traffic. Also the small Sois off and between Silom Road and Thanon Surawong, were magical to explore housing an eclectic mix of hostelries and commercial outlets. The Sois heading from Silom Road to Thanon Surawong Road are crowded with neon lights and GoGo Bars of all sexual persuasions. But the So's heading in the opposite direction parallel to Convent Road offer completely different sorts of attractions. Here there are bijou restaurants and enclaves of street vendors purveying a wide range of goods and foods far cheaper than what can be found at Patpong night-market.

EXPAT LIVING This exciting, steaming world is set amongst the backdrop of towering buildings and the Skytrain rumbling above your head. Silom is not the area for the timid sightseer as Silom Road comes alive after dark when the pavements around Sala Daeng station are crowded with vendors selling everything from clothing, DVDs, food, sex toys, shoes, Buddha statues and much much more. The stalls eat up pavement space and electric wires are ominously strung at head height just waiting to garrote the unaware shopper. Dodgy figures lurk in dark corners waiting to lure you away to a place where heaven can be obtained on earth. But this is the exciting mix that makes Silom buzz with a highly charged atmosphere, crackling with temptation. Amongst all this chaos are some of my favourite hangouts and places to spend a hour or two relaxing. Patty's Fiesta Cantina is on the corner of Silom and Patpong and serves some of the best Iced Margaritas in Bangkok. I always love basement bars as there seems something opulent about drinking with pedestrians walking above your head. A motorbike taxi will take you to the opposite end of Silom Road to the Novotel hotel. There is a small innocuous door to the right of the hotel and there you will find Maggie Choo's. Do not be mistaken by thinking you have stumbled into a Chinese Noodle House, make your way to the back curtain in the corner and you will enter into the subterranean land of Maggie Choo's. It is one of the most atmospheric lounges in Bangkok and really has to be visited to be believed.Back up on Convent Road is Molly Malone's and as the name suggests it is an Irish themed pub. Back in my old stomping days it was one of my regular haunts, only five minutes walk from my apartment. A lot of expats frequent the place for good pub-grub and a great pint of Guinness. As well as the bars and restaurants, Silom has some great massage parlours and there is even a stupendous Hindu temple founded in 1827 by a Tamil immigrant. Silom has a unique identity that embraces the modern, the nefarious as well as the religious. This makes it one of the most interesting areas of Bangkok and in some ways Silom is a microcosm of the city as a whole. So next time you are in Thailand's capital take some time out to explore the real Silom. Ignore Patpong and try out Little Japan in Soi Thaniya and all the other off beat hangouts that adorn the whole area. I am convinced you will love the alternative side of Silom where the locals frequent and have fun on a daily basis.

Visakha Bucha Day

A

ll the major Buddhist holidays are celebrated in Thailand and most of them are national holidays in respect. Living in Thailand it is impossible not to realise the impact that the Buddhist faith has on everyday life and the value placed of making merit. Most Thais have a general belief in Karma and reincarnation, “If you do good you will receive good, if you do evil you will receive evil”. So how you live your life is highly important. The good and bad things in a Thai person’s current life will have an effect on their next life. Merit making helps ease the path of the current life as well as the future lives to come. The most significant of these Buddhist religious days is Visakha Bucha Day. It is really a celebration of the three major events in the life of Buddha in one day. The events all happened at the same time which was on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month (known as Visakha month). The Visakha full moon marks the day which Buddha was born, reached his enlightenment 35 years later and the day he died and entered Nirvana 45 years after that. The day also reminds Buddhists the importance of Lord Buddha's teachings, both spiritually and socially. Visakha Bucha day is also known as Wan Pra Yai and the three events it celebrates are; 1. The Buddha's Birth 2. The Enlightenment of Buddha – While sitting under the Bodhi tree, he found his answers and attained the enlightenment at the age of 35 years. 3. The Nibbana – The Buddha passed away on the full moon day of the year of the small snake, under the two Sal trees in the Sala Grove of the Mallas in Kusinara India.

Although many Thais simply offer Tam Boon on Visakha Bucha day there are certain activities that should be observed in respect. • Tam Boon – Making Merit by going to temples for special observances, making merit, listening to Dhamma preaching and giving donations and joining in with activities with the monks. • Rub Sil – Keeping the Five Precepts, including abstinence of alcohol and any immoral acts. • Tak Bard – Offering monks food • Renunciation – Observe the Eight Precepts, practice meditation and mental discipline and to stay in the temple wearing white robes for a number of days. • Vien Tien – Attending the Candlelight procession on the evening of Visakha. It is common also for people to set birds and fish free to get rid of bad karma. Although some temples are discouraging this practice as it encourages poachers to catch and ensnare the animals. Trapping or hurting animals is against the Buddhist code and this practice is becoming less fashionable the more people's awareness of the animals plight is brought to light. Visakha Bucha Day is widely celebrated and respected throughout Thailand by Buddhists and non Buddhists alike. If you are living in the kingdom or just visiting, then it is advisable that you show respect and not just complain that all the bars are closed.

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

By John Borthwick

You can stay on it, play and pray on it, eat and sleep beside it — but best not swim in Bangkok’s Chao Phraya. Thailand’s mother river, the Maenam Chao Phraya loops like a signature through the landscape, scrawling as it goes the history of the kings of Siam and their serial capitals, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and today’s Krung Thep. By the time it reaches Bangkok’s bling-spangled shores the river has flowed some 340 km from Nakhon Sawan and is now alive with barges, longtails, ferries, tugs and drifting reefs of water hyacinth. Only Buddha would know what else its turbid waters have collected along the way. So stay high and dry either on the banks or aboard its rampaging commuter ferries; or, come nightfall, adrift on one of its boom-box dinner cruise boats.

Be Awed The kings of old surveyed their Great City of the Angels from beautiful gilded boats with high prows adorned by figureheads from mythology. Ancient and new ones are housed in the riverside Royal Barge Museum, although the word “barge” doesn’t do justice to these delicate vessels. To see them in action and full glory catch the extraordinary Royal Barge Procession during which a flotilla of 52 ornate boats, with 2200 Royal Thai Navy sailors rowing and chanting in unison, glides past the Grand Palace and its Camelot of goldenroofed wats. One of the world’s great parades, it is scheduled for November 9 this year, with dress rehearsals slated for November 2 and 6.

Explore The public Chao Phraya Express ferries charge up and downstream all day, with deckhands blowing shrillwhistled signals to the skipper. Hop on and off wherever you want. The fare, collected by a roving conductor, is tiny. Meanwhile, the less-crowded Chao Phraya Tourist Boat offers unlimited-stops on a one-day ticket for 150 baht, which gets you to 13 different piers and attractions. A convenient place to join either service is Sathorn Pier beside Saphan Taksin BTS station. The Bang Rak district around the Mandarin Oriental Hotel was the heartland of 19th century Bangkok’s European trading community. Its colonial-style, riverfront buildings include the 1884 East Asiatic Trading Company (across the street from the Oriental) with a distinctive, white Venetian Renaissance façade.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

Nearby, but clearly visible only from the river, is the French Ambassador’s elegant mansion. Obviously it is off-limits, but next door you can wander past the 1890 Customs House, a huge, old, Italianate sandstone dowager that once monitored all foreign vessels entering Siam’s capital. Today it looks out on the tides and waterbug boats that scamper past and, despite looking like a fire hazard itself, is the local fire station.

Eat

With the exception of the major riverfront hotels, much of Bangkok’s serious dining of the past half-century has turned its back on the river, but in recent years smaller, more casual restaurants have appeared again along the bank, pitched at Thais, expats and tourists-in-the-know. The Deck, for instance, just off Maharat Road (almost opposite Wat Pho) has a jumble of dining levels, mostly with views of the river and its nocturnal flotilla of neon-blazing dinner boats. Its crowning aerie is the romantic Amorosa Bar from where you’ve got one of the best, open-air views in town. On the Thonburi or west side of the river, Supatra River House is long established and tourist-oriented, with Thai fare that is farangfriendly. Meanwhile, Samasara Café & Meal, a Japanese-Thai place hidden in an old teak house off Songwat Road, near Chinatown, is so well hidden that if your taxi can find it, you should shout the driver dinner there.

Sleep When You Can “A grotesque cavalcade of bone-white, ziggurat-slanted hotels” (to use the critical words of one expat writer) lines the central Bangkok stretch of the river. Beautiful, ugly or otherwise — “Up to you,” as the Thais say — this gauntlet includes the usual suspects as well as the unusual: Sheraton, Shangri-La, Peninsula, Hilton, Anantara, The Siam, Chatrium and Avani. Matriarch or Big Daddy — again, up to you — of them all is the venerable, pukka-to-the-max Mandarin Oriental. “I was almost evicted from The Oriental because the manager did not want me to ruin her business by dying in one of her rooms,” recalled author William Somerset Maugham of his first, malaria-wracked visit to this grand hotel in 1923. If your pocket, like mine, doesn’t stretch to these fine quarters, there are more modestly priced waterside digs like River View Guest House, Baan Wanglang Riverside, The Aurum, Sala Rattanakosin, Arun Residence or the tiny Loy La Long. The latter featured in the 2009 film Bangkok Traffic Love Story, Thailand’s highest grossing movie of that year, as the setting for a memorable love affair. Wherever you eat, dream or wander its banks, the Chao Phraya is a wondrous, tale-telling current — not always lovely, to be sure, but ever fascinating, to be equally sure — that’s hectic with river-train barges and disco galleons, slo-mo tugs and those howling ruea hang yao longtails. Go with its flow — just don’t fall in.

Sometimes it snows in April W

hile still reeling from the devastating loss of David Bowie it was apparent that 2016 would be the grimmest of reaper years for music when the even more shocking death of Prince was announced on April 21st.

The strangest, sketchiest details mentioned his plane having to stop when he was taken ill whilst on a journey suffering with the flu and then returning to Paisley Park where he died. For those of you who only regarded him as a figure of fun, a slight elfin man remembered for changing his name to a symbol and refusing to talk to the press through years behind a lace veil or via a member of his band. Look again and as with all great artists go to the music. Not just the Purple Rain anthems and the 1999 dance floor favourites , seek out any and every piece of Prince music you can and go listen to it. For as well as being the downright party boy for the 80s and consistently giving us the very best of music to “get ready to” and “put us in the mood for a night out” as we backcombed our hair and dressed in Peach and Black, he wrote wonderful melodies and great lyrics. Often only appreciated for this when others covered his songs most notably Sinead O’Connor ‘s “Nothing compares to You” with the iconic video showing just how deeply his lyrics moved her . More surprisingly Tom Jones would hurl himself into “Kiss”, loving the song so much as to include it in all his live shows. Talking of live shows nobody but nobody could do it better than Prince. The energy of a man who could spend for most mortals, an exhausting two hours on stage only to go off to a secret gig straight after and then party through the night was legendary. These after show gigs were not just watered down re-runs but widely acclaimed, still musically tight, early hour events such as the wonderful night after one of his 10 consecutive concerts at the O2 in London when he gave his lucky fans a surprise in the form of one Amy Winehouse who they were lucky enough to have entertain them. For he was all about his fans – the real fans and the fans of his music . Refusing to be a “Slave” to the record industry he refused to jump through their hoops and made his stand much in the same way of George Michael at the same time. His favourite colour was purple and at any given Prince concert that was what you would see his devotees wearing along with Cuban heeled boots, button decorated trousers and cropped bolero jackets with hats for those who felt brave enough. It was a glamorous and inclusive style that he put out and a look not just suited to his beautiful dancers but given to all. Remember how great Chaka Chan looked in “I feel for you” Rosie Gaines singing “Diamonds and Pearls” and Scotland’s own Sheena Easton in “You got the look” . Then what about The Girls – for those who questioned Prince’s masculinity with his feminine style of dressing, ever changing hair styles and use of make- up, remember he was always surrounded by the most stylish. The beautiful Kim Basinger fell for his charms whilst they were involved in the first “Batman” film. Whilst Mayte broke many a fan’s heart when she introduced herself to Prince via a belly dancing video with her party trick swords. Then his predilection for twins – such as Diamond and Pearl gave even more stories to add to the legend. Yet it is the music and his compulsive overriding love for it for which he should always hold a place in our hearts and our collections. Locking himself away in his Paisley Park Studios he would record every track on drums, keyboards, bass and guitar. As a lead guitar soloist alone drawing from the direct vein of Little Richard and Jimmy Hendrix he carried the purple torch with solos that were never self indulgent or for “guitarists only” but making his instrument sing – almost at times like a human voice while he danced and gyrated. – and don’t even get me started on his dancing ! It’s been hard to find much of Prince’s music on You Tube surely the only good thing to come from this tragedy will be that more is posted. If you need just one example of how truly great he was try to find the episode of TFI Friday where he came out on stage to take the roof off with “Baby Knows” or just cry with the Doves over “Sometimes it snows in April”.

Cut out Sugar !

F

ollowing on from last month’s article regarding Diabetes and always being a fan of the phrase “prevention is better than cure” we look at ways you can help prevent the onslaught of type 2 Diabetes and generally stop the cravings that can lead to obesity and ill health.

Sugar is incredibly addictive, in fact recent research has shown that it is actually as addictive as heroin to the human brain. So when you look at the increase in diabetes and obesity rates over the last few years it can quickly be seen that our sugar problem is out of control. However, knowledge is spreading and people are being made aware of the need to cut out sugar ! This is especially true for any of us suffering from:. • Belly fat • Being overweight • Craving sugar and carbohydrates • Having trouble losing weight on low-fat diets • Eating when not hungry • Including more and more bad foods in our diets for comfort eating /just to feel good The answer is to stop consuming all forms of sugar, flour products, and artificial sweeteners, which cause cravings, slow the metabolism, and lead to fat storage. Also get rid of anything with hydrogenated fats MSG or trans fats as can be found in doughnuts, biscuits, crackers, pies and cakes. Generally it is best to avoid any foods that come in a box, package, or can but instead stick to whole, fresh food.

Avoid fizzy or sugary drinks Any calories consumed via liquid sugar are far worse than those from solid food as it’s rather like mainlining sugar directly to your liver which can immediately lead to the dreaded belly fat. Often fizzy drinks will bloat you and yet you don’t feel full, so eat more all day and end up craving yet more sugar and more carbs. If you do a calorie consumption check you will often find that these drinks are the single biggest source of sugar calories in your diet. One 20-ounce of Cola drink can have as much as 15 teaspoons of sugar; Therefore one can of the stuff per day can increases a child’s chance of being obese by 60 percent ! As well as the obvious sodas you should also try to avoid juices (other than green vegetable juice), sports drinks, and sweetened teas or coffees.

Instead bulk up with protein and the “right” carbs Protein, should be consumed at every meal especially breakfast as this is the key to balancing blood sugar and insulin and cutting cravings. Start the day with eggs or a protein shake and then through the day eat nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, chicken or meat. Also discover the right type of carbohydrates. For example did you know that vegetables are carbs? And there are some that you can eat as much as you want . These include greens such as those in the broccoli family (cauliflower, kale, collards),asparagus, green beans, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomatoes, fennel, , artichokes, and peppers. . Those to avoid however are in the potato family: namely sweet potatoes, winter squash and beets. - You should also avoid beans and grains – therefore bread , cakes and biscuits.

Fat can actually be a friend as can an emergency snack Fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar does. Fat makes you full, balances your blood sugar, and is necessary for fueling your cells. Along with protein, it is important to eat good fats such as olive oil, coconut butter, avocados, and omega-3 fats from fish.

Also you never want to be in caught in a food emergency when your blood sugar is dropping and you grab the nearest convenience fast food or vending machines snack. Far better to Instead consider snacking on: • Almonds, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds • Salmon jerky turkey or beef jerky • Blueberries. • Peanut butter

De-stress and watch out for food allergies When you are stressed, your hormones can go crazy. Cortisol goes up which makes you hungry, causes belly fat storage, and can leads to type-2 diabetes. Studies show that taking deep breaths activates the vagus nerve, that shifts your metabolism from fat storage to fat burning and quickly moves you out of the stress state. Therefore you should try deep breathing exercises can be done anywhere, anytime. For example take five slow deep breaths—in to the count of five, out to the count of five five times before every meal. Also Inflammation can trigger blood sugar imbalances. The most common source of inflammatory foods other than sugar, flour, and trans fats are hidden food sensitivities. The most common culprits being gluten and dairy sensitivity as regrettably we often crave foods that we’re allergic to. So if you suspect this might be true for you try cutting them out for a week or so and see if you feel and better.

Get enough sleep and get back on the wagon ! Often a common complaint in Thailand not getting enough sleep can drive sugar and carb cravings by affecting appetite hormones. This is because you need more energy when you don’t sleep which may lead to cravings for quickly absorbed sugars providing a quick sugar rush. Sleep is the best way to fight the desire to overeat. Get an early night and try to eat your last meal no later than 7 pm If all this just seems to monastic a discipline then just do your best any improvements you can make to lifestyle and diet will make you feel better and encourage you to try harder. Then if there is a special occasion or time when you just can’t resist eating what you shouldn’t dust yourself down the next day, jump back on the wagon and keep trying..

Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal “a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces”.

In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function such as the recent coffee morning at the Coffee Club,Royal Garden Plaza in between Pattaya Second Road and Beach Road. When everyone arrived they had their photographs taken individually which were then on their tables for the next PILC luncheon at Blue Olive - a nice touch! During the morning coffee/tea and a selection of delicious food was served by the Coffee Club:satays, panini sandwiches and loads of lovely cakes and sweets. Then, there was a raffle, which raised 13,900 baht.

During the following lunch at the “Blue Olive’ PILC members were given an additional 10% discount off their bill on presentation of their membership card.

But its not all just eating and drinking at PILC as during a recent trip to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya there was a foray into the world of first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This began with a short introduction by Dr. Ian Corness followed by an explanation of some basic first aid solutions such as how to treat burns to the skin, a possible broken bone scenario and even how to deal with snake bites! Next came the practical part with lessons on how to splint and bandage a broken arm, leg or ankle. Finally ending with CPR and the chance to practice on chest dummies So if you fancy joining in the fun why not visit the newcomers coffee morning every last Monday of the month from 11 am in Restaur Casa Pascal.

WAKE UP, AND SMELL THE COFFEE

I

n the second of our ladle full of coffee beans, we explore the world of Mezzo Coffee. And especially for those readers who reside in Bangkok, the quirky Mezzo logo will be as familiar as that of Starbucks, Costa or any other of the Big Brand names. I was fortunate to recently have an interview with Khun “Watt Thanawatt Jiraserijinda the main man behind the Mezzo Coffee empire. Khun Watt, who is a Thai national, spent his formative years in Taiwan before moving to Atlanta and training as a software engineer. In 2008 after his return to Thailand, the seeds of an idea came to him after he found himself constantly searching around Bangkok for his favourite drink, which was of course coffee.

Khun Watt could see that the big international brands were firmly established in Thailand's capital city but a decent cup of coffee was really expensive. It was a conundrum to him that the excellent coffee Thailand grew in the northern mountain regions was only really being exported. He could see a valid gap in the market as the big players were either charging too much or were really just restaurants that served coffee. At the time the average price for a Latte in Corporate Coffee Land was around 130 baht whereas Mezzo would be offering the quality Thai equivalent at 75 baht, also in a completely different environment. So in 2008 Khun Watt started buying Thai grown mountain coffee and experimented with roasting the beans and developing his blends. After a couple of years of development he began exporting his perfected coffee most successfully to Australia and Hong Kong and Mezzo opened its first outlet in Bangkok. From day one Mezzo's concept has been to bring a quality product to the market at a reasonable price, providing excellent value for money to customers. The outlets have table service, free WiFi and fully trained Baristas who know how to make the perfect coffee. Home made light meals and snacks, with authentic Western and Thai desserts are offered, all prepared from Mezzo's own central Bangkok kitchen. A Mezzo outlet is not just a coffee house, but much more for everyone to just hang out , chatting with friends, or an out of office meeting. Personally I love Thai coffee as I think the taste is superb, but the big problem is that it is hard to find somewhere to buy it. Mezzo coffee now has the answer, since 2008 up until the present day it has grown to 80 outlets in Bangkok and the surrounding areas, including 2 in Pattaya. By the end of this year that will be augmented to one hundred, all owned and operated by the company. The plans for the future of Mezzo are impressive and Khun Watt will consider franchises for other areas of Thailand. Also the brand is looking outside the kingdom to promote further outlets in the future. Walk into any Mezzo outlet in Bangkok, Pattaya, Chonburi or elsewhere and you are guaranteed a perfect, delicious cup of the black stuff as well as a welcoming atmosphere and tasty food. The company concept of providing value for money is plain to see and it is a refreshing change to take a comfortable seat, relax and wait to be served. Breaking news for those of our readers who reside in Pattaya is that work on two new Mezzo outlets in the city is underway. Due for completion and opening at the end of May or early June 2016 will be the LK Empress Mezzo and the second Mike Shopping Mall Mezzo. I for one will be frequenting these two newcomers regularly, and if like me you are a connoisseur of great coffee and good company then Mezzo has just the offer for you.

BUNKER 42

By Tim Clute It is always great to discover something new and different in Pattaya. The recently opened Bunker 42 in Central Pattaya should definitely be on your list of places to check out. Featuring food and drink offerings available nowhere else in Pattaya, you can be assured of a great night out. In fact there are so many great new things to try, you will want to go more than once. I had the pleasure of attending their grand opening on the 23’rd of April - and it was so good that I went back the following week with a few of my friends - who also concurred that Bunker 42 is well worth the visit. It is situated on Sukhumvit Road between Pattaya Klang and McDonalds and also accessible from Soi Arunothai through the entrance to Spanish Condo. It features a very generous indoor and outdoor seating that flows together and features a stage where a very good live band was performing for the evening.

The venue would make an excellent choice for a party, celebration or corporate gathering. The combination of ample parking, spacious indoor / outdoor seating, an excellent food and drink selection and helpful courteous staff would ensure a great time for everyone One of the features of Bunker 42 is their exclusive range of Thai Whiskeys and Rice WInes. We were given an opportunity to sample a number of these and it was a real treat. The style and flavours were unique and there was something to satisfy every taste. Of course you can still enjoy a nice cold beer as well. The food was well presented and quite good. They have some exclusive offerings here including their signature dish “Chicken Ozone”. Created by the Bunker 42 specialist food designers and featuring an exquisite Bunker 42 special sauce. They currently have some great promotions. So go check them out !

FRASER’S SPORTS BAR

by Kevin Cain

Location wise, Fraser’s is situated between some of the finest restaurants in Pattaya/Jomtien (Bruno’s, Gian’s and Indian by Nature), on Thappraya Road and just around the corner from Jomtien bus station (the one that takes you to the airport) so if you have some spare time before you leave, or have just arrived, Fraser’s should be your first and last port of call for a bite to eat and drink. Opening hours are from 8am to Midnight. If you’re in that area in May then a date for your diary must be Friday the 27th – why? On that date Fraser’s Sports Bar & Family Restaurant celebrates it’s ‘Second Birthday’ and in just two years the brainchild from one of Pattaya’s most colorful and well respected characters, Aussie Stewart “Froggy” Fraser has become the No1 Sports Bar in Jomtien. “I made Fraser’s in memory of my mum (Dotty) and dad (Norm), who first introduced me to the joys of pub-life, my mum worked in the kitchens and my dad drank out front” said Froggy. “I wanted to create a sports bar where everyone was welcome, including families with children and I can honestly say I have achieved that aim”. I can assure you that Fraser’s is no ordinary Sports Bar because for one of the best family-friendly pub atmospheres in Pattaya, it takes some beating. The pub was created with families in mind and welcomes children with open arms – there is a large kid’s playhouse (fully supervised) separated from the main drinking area in Dotty’s play room. Fraser’s is famous for showcasing live sporting events from all over the world, it’s the sports bar for all sports fans with all English Premier League games, AFL, NRL, Rugby Union, Golf, Tennis, Cricket, UFC, F1, NFL, MotoGP, Boxing and any other sport you can think of being shown live on one of the large 12 TV screens. One of the unique features at Fraser’s is the 5 private dining booths, each with its own small TV screen that allows you to watch any sporting event in private – also if you choose, you can sit outside on the open terrace overlooking Thappraya Road, just relax and watch the world go by. Their food menu consists of gut filling breakfasts, pizzas/pasta, seafood, meat dishes, gourmet sandwiches, Thai food as well as daily specials. Some of the favorite dishes include; Australian Wagyu Steak, Beer Battered Pacific Dory, New Zealand Lamb Chops and Chicken Parmigiana. Stewart confided in me that on average they serve around 200 covers a day, so you see what I mean about this being no ordinary sports bar.

The drinks menu is as extensive as the food one, with a choice of draught beer that includes Stella Artois, Heineken, Tiger, Magners and Guinness. From 4pm to 7pm everyday Fraser’s have an ‘Happy Hour’ on all their draught beers, this along with its ‘All Day 2-4-1’ cocktails and ‘Beer Bucket’ specials give you an amazing value for money drinks deal.

sites. Fraser’s is no exception to this and has an extremely active Website and Facebook page –the former giving you a comprehensive and up-to-date look at everything Fraser’s, whilst the latter tells you all the daily happenings at the pub. The addresses of these two media links can be found at the bottom of the page.

At Fraser’s, they have many daily food specials and theme nights which are not only fun but also give you the chance to receive something back from Stewart. Their logo is a ‘Frog’ (guess why) called ‘Ribbit’ (think about it), Ribbits are special tokens at Fraser’s and are used for various promotions throughout the week, if you win any then one Ribbit = One Free Drink.

As the expression goes “You are only as good as the sum of your parts” and Fraser’s takes the best aspects of live sport, a buzzing atmosphere, a family-friendly attitude and combines them with excellent food and drink at value for money prices. I suppose the best way to describe Frasers would be a friendly locals sports bar that welcomes all visitors. So all in all, if you’re single, a couple, a group or a family, Fraser’s is a place you should visit and try out. You never know perhaps you’ll become a regular.

What about a home-cooked roast dinner every day? Dotty’s Home Cooked Roast for 6-8 people is available every day of the week at Fraser’s, just give Stewart a days’ notice and he will arrange it all for you. You have a choice of Chicken, Lamb, Beef, Turkey or Pork; served with all the trimmings and if you can’t finish it all they will let you take home the leftovers. If you live in the Jomtien area and don’t fancy turning out, Fraser’s also have a FREE home delivery service between10am and 10pm, just call 038 251 560 and order your food. In this day and age the only way to keep your customers fully updated with what’s happening is through social media

Making a Difference An interview with New Nordics F&B boss

Drive into the heart of Pratumnak Hill until you see bright orange buildings. That’s the Nordic Village. At the heart of this minicity is New Nordic Steaks, Grill and Winery (SG&W), a flagship restaurant powering the food and beverage machine for the whole neighborhood. That’s where I found Anders Eliasson. Anders is originally from Sweden and has been involved in the food and beverage business here in Thailand for 5 years. He started assembling The New Nordic Group’s culinary team 2 years ago. When I asked Anders what have been the biggest challenges he’s faced while building restaurants at New Nordic. He had a lot to say.

Training

Anders told me that finding, training and keeping staff to power the F & B machine is always a challenge. He told me his experience in the hospitality industry in the US helped immensely. Anders worked in Miami’s trendy South Beach district and first-hand experience with American style hospitality left an impression on him. “Consistency at every level” Anders said. “That’s the key to their high standard of service”. The word “consistency” would pop up repeatedly during our interview. Anders said the key to consistent service is training. The New Nordic Group is fortunate enough to have a Thai national that speaks fluent Norwegian. He and Anders administer a training program that includes videos on recipes and even cocktails. “One problem is training. Another is keeping them after they are trained” he said. “That’s why we work hard to motivate our staff and give them a feeling of family. This is very important for Thai employees”. Anders said he’s quite proud of the team and feels like the quality and consistency of their food and service will continue to improve.

Diversity

“Incredible diversity amongst our customers is also a bigger challenge than I expected” Anders said. “They are all ages and nationalities and you have to make everyone happy”. Anders told me he uses the Hard Rock Café motto, “Love all, Serve all”. New Nordic caters to a wide variety of visitors. There’s a breakfast buffet for the Chinese tour groups. On weekends many Thai families come to spend some time near the beach. On traditional European holidays like Easter and Christmas, New Nordic’s food and beverage department reaches out to Scandinavian customers. “A surprising amount of North Americans come to Steaks Grill &Winery to dine”, Anders said. “We are becoming known for our New Zealand beef and excellent pizzas”. Anders also told me that the 3 week New Nordic Music Festival held earlier this year tested the F&B department’s abilities. “Feeding 200 or more people all at once is never easy” he said. “We made the buffet simple and satisfying. Everyone found something they liked”.

New Marcus

“The most exciting challenge for me is the remodeling of the Marcus building to expand in both directions” Anders said. He briefed me about plans to tear down the wall near the swimming pool at the Marcus building and connect the courtyard to that of Marcus 2 and Marcus 3. The result will be a huge open area with a chain of swimming pools and outdoor entertainment space.

Issue 187 | MAY 2016

Anders explained what he meant by “both directions” when he showed me plans to open up the dining room at Steaks Grill & Winery to the street. A balcony facing Pratumnak Soi 4 is in the works and hopefully the big open air bistro will attract passersby. “The Marcus building and this restaurant are really the heartbeat of the Nordic Village” he said. “We want to make it something special”. “We are always serving New Nordic residents and guests as a priority” Anders added. “But, we will try to break down barriers that might keep anyone from not taking a look inside.” As he talked I could imagine people and music on the balcony overlooking the street. For sure this expansion will create a welcome feeling. The Marcus expansion will take 12 to 18 months. Anders says the kitchen is ready for anything and he welcomes the challenge.

Nordic Secret

I asked Anders what was the secret to New Nordic’s rapid expansion and success. “I think a lot has to do with people feeling safe” he said. “This high season we had many guests returning from the year before bringing friends and family with them. Our little village is clean and secure. That’s what people want”. “Staying in the New Nordic Village is like an all-inclusive resort or a cruise ship turned into a neighborhood” he added. “Everything you could want is so convenient”. “If there is a secret” he said, “It’s probably our team”. “We have more than 400 employees with several countries represented. The New Nordic Group keeps everyone busy, motivated and ready for anything. That might be our secret weapon”.

A Difference

As a final question I asked Anders what he liked best about working for The New Nordic Group. “I get to see things grow from the beginning” he said. “Two years ago there was nothing here. Now we’re seating 200 plus people per night and putting on music festivals. It’s very exciting to see how far we have come and to be part of it. What I like best is that I am in at the beginning and can really make a difference”. The night after talking to Anders, I visited the New Nordic Steaks, Grill and Winery for dinner. Sipping a house red, listening to some cool tunes and telling jokes to the friendly staff, I could feel Anders’ South Beach training in effect. It’s an easy place to just hang out and watch the world go by. The ability to create that much genuine atmosphere in such a short period of time is considerable. Congratulations to Anders and his team … making a difference on Pratumnak Hill.

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!

A

ll eyes will be on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the evening of the 7th May as Briton Amir Khan goes up against Saul Alvarez for the World Middleweight Title.

Boxing fans could well be in for a treat as Khan has moved up two weight divisions to take on the Mexican. In the early prefight talk, Kahn is even going so far as to suggest that Alvarez, better known by fans as Canelo will be a tougher fight than either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather. Personally, I am not sure quite how he can make the comparison, having failed in his bid to take on either the pound-for-pound king or Pac Man before they hung up their gloves ! It might just be a bit of reverse psychology from the Khan camp in light of the fact that their man has jumped two weight divisions to take on what in fairness can only be described as the stronger man. Khan’s message to his fans is that they don’t have to fear him sacrificing his trademark speed, but he knows it will be a tough fight. One thing is for sure, despite previous setbacks, the lad from Bolton firmly believed that he would always get a shot at the big time!

A Fight too far? Despite Kahn’s impressive professional record of 19 wins by KO in 34 fights, with only 3 defeats, this Middleweight contest could backfire badly on him.To be fair, Khan has bounced back from those two defeats on the bounce back in 2011/12 when he lost to Lamont Peterson & Danny Garcia respectively. Although Khan relinquished belts in both cases, he was later reinstalled as Champion by the WBA as Peterson failed a drug test. It’s easy to understand why the Briton is brimming with confidence as he put aside the challenges of Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri in his last 5 fights. However, stepping up 2 divisions could well be his undoing. He might well be lightening fast, but his jaw will need to be made out of something other than glass if he is to deflect the power of Canelo. Canelo’s record is no less than Khan’s with 32 KO’s coming from his 46 wins, incidentally the only two non-positive results show as a draw against Jorge Juarez, back in 2006 and a points defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. Personally I have no malice for Khan, even though back 2005 / 2006 he and his entourage rocked up to a MINI dealership that I was running in Bolton and played the old “do you know who I am” line. Sadly for Khan, I was less than impressed and declined his offer of big discount on a new car! Whatever happens on the night of the 7th will be a defining moment for Khan. Either he will finally get the recognition he craves, or will be planning his retirement speech.

Quigley Going Quickly! Another fight to watch out for is on the undercard of the main event in May. Unbeaten Jason Quigley will be looking to enhance his already growing reputation and gain an 11th straight win. The former Sky Sports Scholar will be taking on another tough Mexican, in the form of James De La Rosa. It should be remembered that De la Rosa took Alfredo Angulo the distance. If Quigley does what is required he is planning a ringside seat for the main event! After all, it is likely that he will need to do some homework on a future fight with the winner. He has given his own prediction for the big fight. Khan fans look away now as the lad from Donegal is suggesting that although Khan is likely to cause problems for Canelo, due to his speed, it is very likely that the Mexican will wear his opponent down. Once Canelo is able to get inside then the extra strength and weight are likely to take it’s toll. Quigley expects the fight to go late, but for the Ref to raise Canelo’s arm with a late stoppage in his favour.

When is old too old? In other boxing news, chatter is not dying down about a possible Nigel Benn & Chris Eubank get together. Whether this is just press talk and there is no real chance of the 52 year old “Dark Destroyer” stepping back in the right against 49 year old “Simply the Best” Eubank, it has certainly generated a degree of interest! Another ex-pro and much loved hero has also potentially slung his hat back in the ring too! Big Frank Bruno has muted a return to the ring, but there is definitely a huge number of people that wouldn’t want Frank putting his body and mind on the line one more time. Perhaps the most influential party on Frank’s return will be the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) as they will get the final rule over whether or not Bruno is given the all important licence to fight.

Klitschko - No Respect! In the heavyweight end of things, the rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko has been cranked up another notch. You will all remember the lesson Fury handed out to the Ukranian back in November. Was that a one off ? Or will Fury have what it takes when the pair meetup in Manchester on July 9th ?. The talk has started very early on this one, with Fury labeling his opponent as a “no risk taker”, and one that offers little or no entertainment in his fights. Klitschko has gone on record to describe Fury as a “clown”, which as you might expect didn’t go too well in the Manchester lads camp. The Ukrainian has also recently stated that he has “no respect” for any of the current belt holders in his division. Keen boxing fans will be able to follow events closely in any one of a number of great locations around Pattaya. Where are you planning to watch these big night fights?

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold Tom on Fire

Another day dawned as just under 120 golfers, including 12 Ladies descended on the Phoenix Gold Golf Club for the April PAGS tournament. The Mountain & Lakes nines was the allotted combination for the field of keen, but apprehensive players. Weather conditions were oppressive, with just a light breeze to alleviate the heat, so the offer of free carts organised by Shane was a welcome attraction for the PAGS.

Tom Thompson (16) was the undoubted

star of the day, winning the B flight with a fine 39 points, to go along with the maximum 2 technical prizes, after writing his name on another 1 which went in to the lucky draws for the evening.

Other notables on the day, with at least 2 technical prizes were Anders Pederson who contributed a 3rd to the lucky draws, and Matthew Sneath. The ladies winner was Somchith (36) with a solid 35 points while the minor placing was won by Mon (13) with 34 points.

Kenny Chung (26) was the winner of the C flight for handicaps 20+ with a day’s best 42 points, edging John Duffy (25) into 2nd with his 40 points, while Bob Lakey (28) picked up 3rd spot with 39 Points. The B flight winner has already been mentioned but the minor placings for handicaps 15 – 19 saw another tightly contested, but orderly affair with Philippe Pruvot (18) getting the nod over Mike Johns (16) after the countback went to the last 6 holes 11/10, with both players signing for 36 points. The A flight for handicaps 0 – 14 saw Jerry Sweetham (12) a clear winner on 37 points, to go with his Senior’s long drive. Again minor placings required a countback, with Gerd Riedler (6) edging Jeff Wylie (7) 17/16 on the back 9, after both had solid, but unspectacular scores of 35 points. Dave and his team were once again doing a sterling job in the tucker department, with plenty of fine fare to be enjoyed on the evening. As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from a PAGS presentation. I am confident we will all look forward to next month’s event at Phoenix Gold, on 31 May. H

i Folks, Frank and I set off to troll for horse mackerel (bpla thoo) and other surface feeders at the Hin Pra Nang. A reef one mile south of Koh Krok, the actual head of the reef is nine feet below the surface at low water. During a patchy bite my line took off with the reel handle spinning around furiously (I do not rely on the drag setting) then nothing. A big horse mackerel had started a run only for the hook rip out, this happened again, the fishing gods were having fun with me! Frank got a similar run and after ten minutes landed a 13 inch 1 lb fish. With about fifteen fish in the cooler box we headed off to Koh Krok. Things did not bode well at Koh Krok, it was a dropping tide and at the north end the sea was quite rough, a dive boat anchored close to shore on the N.W. side cramped our style. So we trolled up to the dive boat then back down to the southern end. Normally on a dropping tide we would not fish the southern point, but today we did. The snipe were biting and we got some, lost some and replaced the bitten off hooks. Frank said he had hooked a big one, only to say it did not look that big when it jumped out of the water. I had the net ready and scooped up a modest sized 23 inch snipe. Frank picked the fish up and we both saw that the snipe was not hooked but had the main line wrapped around his bill. I followed the main line over the side of the boat and thought that the hook must have caught the side of the boat, so I reached over and pulled it up. As I did this Frank’s fish cut the main line with its teeth and I pulled up a same sized snipe with the hook in its gill plate. Two fish with razor sharp teeth and every opportunity to use them! Amazing. The bait usually gets pushed up the line and another snipe had hit this and got the line wrapped it’s bill.

By Roger

fluorocarbon is the perfect equipment. On a dropping tide here the current goes northwards. Twenty metres out the current goes south. So I anchor due south of where I want to fish. Bringing the lure against the current is best, it allows me to slow down the retrieval and the squid will be fooled more easily. When you retrieve with the current there’s more chance of snagging a rock and the squid has to decide if the lure is a piece of garbage or a live fish. Garbage does not go against the current. Using braid I can tell the difference between hooking a rock (a sharp unyielding tug) and a squid (a soft tug that gives). Unfortunately snagging a sea urchin feels just like a squid hit! Sometimes I can feel the squid hit the lure mid body and let go as he then feels the spikes. Then I stop reeling in, strike a couple of times, if this does not work I reel in quickly and cast back out about three metres further than where the squid was. When I get a squid I recast in the same spot as there normally be two or three other squid about. When the squid are in it is usual to get three or four in a row, being close in there are Thais on holiday watching and seeing me hauling squid in has them reaching for their rods. Have fun, Roger

One troll over the southern point I latched into another decent fish, it fought like a horse mackerel but with heavier head thumps. Frank said “dusky jack” a rare and much valued fish, I got him over the shallow rocks and then he reefed me, I moved the boat to get directly over the coral but 6lb line can only take so much coral and he was gone. My third lost fish and one that had me cursing and stomping the deck of my boat. Oh those fishing gods! Scott’s guys on Captain Deang’s boat got two queen fish and two nice sized golden trevally. My supplies of squid have been running down, so early mornings on a dropping tide I anchor at Naban in about two metres of water close to shore and fish for squid. A long sensitive rod with 4 lb braid and a squid lure tied to swivel with 6 lb 6 inch piece of

And now it’s set to be on the grid when Thailand Super Series kicks off its first round of the 2016 season. The first example to arrive in Thailand stretched its powerful yet lithe legs at Bira Circuit.

Forming the backbone of the Italian supercar maker’s 'one make' Super Trofeo racing series, it plays the same role as the Porsche 991 GT3 Cup does for the German company or the Ferrari 458 Challenge for the Prancing Horse. And just like both those cars which have already arrived in TSS and stamped their mark, now comes the Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo, which slots perfectly into Super Car Class 2-GTM. It will be on the grid when Super Car kicks off for its first round of the year, which will make this particular Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo, which raced in the Super Trofeo Asia Pacific last year, one of the first to appear in a domestic racing series – and that’s another sign of how TSS is growing fast in stature. The latest and most exciting racing sportscars in the world are coming to our grids. The Huracán will be in the hands of Sarun Sereethoranakul, who has emerged in just two seasons as one of our leading Super Car stars. He switched from a successful drifting career to Super Car for the 2014 season, choosing a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup for his transition and continued with that combination for 2015. Sarun has quickly made the grade in circuit racing and his white #55 Porsche is now a regular on the podium, no mean feat in the most competitive category in Thai motorsport. His first win clearly isn’t far away. However it was also clear with the influx of newer cars last year, such as the Lamborghini Gallardo LP520, Ferrari 458 Challenge and Porsche’s new-generation 991 GT3 Cup that Sarun needed a newer car to match his ambitions. “I decided to have a new car for the 2016 season because the GTM class is very competitive and every teams develop and make their cars faster and faster,” Sarun explains. “The 997 Cup car is quite old and not competitive enough and with this car our team never can think about winning the race or pole position, even getting on the podium still difficult. So it's time to take a chance with a new car.” There are a lot of cutting edge racecars that tick most of the boxes for Super Car Class 2-GTM so it wasn’t a straightforward choice, but for Khun Sarun and his team, which includes his racing ‘tutor’, the highly experienced Japanese professional driver Keita Sawa, one car stood out. “The Huracán Super Trofeo is fast car compared to the one make race cars,” he reckons. “This version is the 610-2, it's two wheel drive so has good handling, low maintenance and our team can do the maintenance by ourselves.”

While Sarun has made a lot of progress in the last two years and proved himself as one of the leading Super Car drivers, he admits he still has some way to go and is quite cautious on what he can achieve with his new weapon. “I need to get on more podiums than 2015,” he says. The Huracán Super Trofeo is certainly a capable racetrack ‘weapon’. The sleek and dynamic chassis is made from a hybrid mix of carbon and aluminum with modifications of the double wishbone suspension geometry that also allow a larger and more efficient radiator to be fitted at the front while accommodating a racing specific gearbox at the rear. The aerodynamics have been improved over the road going version too with a new racing splitter and dive plates being incorporated at the front, new side skirts to manage airflow along the flanks as well as a big racing wing, protruding rear diffuser and specific engine cover. With a lowered ride height it adds up to a visually stunning machine that oozes menace while 18-inch wheels all round further add to the look. Under the skin the production 5.2 litre V10 engine is retained but fitted with a racing intake and managed by a MoTeC unit with Traction Control options. Maximum power is rated at 620 CV while peak torque comes in at 570 Nm. As with previous generation Gallardo-based 'Super Trofeo' versions the production standard 4WD system is ditched in favour of rear wheel drive with power fed to the wheels via a racing clutch, lightweight flywheel and 6-speed sequential gearbox. There is ABS but no ESP. The new Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo first joined the brand's three global one-make series last year. Some of those first year cars are have now filtered out of the series towards domestic championships, including the one acquired by Sarun. The car looks like being a highly competitive package so the task for Sarun’s support team will be to help him unlock that potential and attune the driver to his new mount. That journey started with a shakedown test at Bira Circuit. On a very hot and dry April afternoon the Pattaya racetrack reverberated to the sound of a Huracán Super Trofeo for the very first time. The running was all about thoroughly checking over the car, starting to understand its characteristics and begin learn about setting it up. “The purpose is to test the car as we have just got it,” explained Sarun. “We prepare the car and it’s my first drive in Thailand so I want to test the car before I go to Buriram.” Sarun was pleased with the shakedown and reckons the car is a good step forward over his outgoing 997. “The Lamborghini’s very nice to drive, very balanced if compared to the Porsche, the Porsche needs a lot of weight transfer,” he explains. “The engine has more torque so it’s fast, but sometimes it’s more sensitive, you have to adjust and accelerate very smoothly, and the car has Traction Control so even in Bira where there are some low speed corners and bumps so on acceleration it’s more convenient to drive.”

The Fantastic Four 2015 proved to be an incredible year for TR Motorsport and CEA Racing culminating in the capture of Thai Motorsports Holy Grail! The “Fantastic Four” is one of the hardest and most elusive achievements in Motorsport throughout the Kingdom. However before going on let's take the time to reflect on how it all began… Back in 2010 with TR Motorsport struggling to find a Team Sponsor, CEA Project Logistics duly stepped in to take on the challenge of making the team number 1 again. As the team worked and grew together the ethics and ethos of both team owner Thomas Raldorf and Kevin Fisher MD of CEA began to turn that hard work into results on the track. Over the next four years several trophies and championships were won. After narrowly missing out on the drivers' championship in 2014 the team was even more determined to go one step further in 2015. The 2015 season began in perfect fashion with Thomas smashing lap records on every circuit he graced with the ‘Blue Blur' Honda City, the team looked invincible but as with all motorsports very rarely do you have a perfect season! The inevitable mechanical failures popped up causing the team to drop points, however, such was their lead that the championship was won at a canter in the penultimate race at Bira International Circuit, Pattaya. At the ensuing BBQ party back at pit lane it was announced that TR Motorsport & CEA Racing had officially completed the ‘The Fantastic Four', winning the following: • The Drivers’ Championship • The Team Championship • The Manufacturers Championship • The Tire Trophy Championship Scenes of jubilation filled the pit lane with mechanics, sponsors and guests celebrating this very special achievement well into the night. For Team Owner Thomas Raldorf it was the Crown Jewel he had been waiting so many years for and gave him closure after the previous year's disappointment. The achievement had been 16 years in the making, after winning 9 other championships the Royal Trophy had always eluded him, until now! Thomas addressed the guests saying, "Winning the Royal Thailand National Championship Trophy is an amazing feeling, but doing it as a guest in this amazing country is even more fantastic, to all of you who have supported us over the last few years I really can’t thank you enough, this is a very humbling moment in my life and one I shall treasure” The Bangkok Motor show provided the backdrop for the 2015 Royal Awards dinner with Thomas Raldorf and his team from TR Motorsport / CEA Racing honored on stage as the 2015 multiple champions. The Thai Royal Guard began the proceedings arriving to the sound of the Royal Anthem replete with the Thai National and Royal flags, esteemed members of the guard carried the Royal Trophies to the stage. Such was the importance and significance of the event, that rehearsals had been undertaken by all the winners earlier that day. It was a visibly proud Thomas that walked the red carpet through a Royal Guard towards the stage. After collection of the Royal Trophy Thomas took time to pose for the national media in attendance. An equally proud Earl Brown representing both TR Motorsport and CEA Project Logistics made his way to the stage to collect the 2015 Team Championship award. As the event began to wind down and the excitement dissipated both Thomas and Earl took a moment to reflect on their great partnership that had resulted in this incredible achievement for the team, sponsors, and fans. Not one to rest on their laurels the conversation quickly turned to the upcoming 2016 season and what new challenges lay ahead!

otor racing in Thailand has zoomed into an exciting new ‘golden age’ over the last couple of years and every single aspect of the sport is booming, drivers, cars and teams are almost unrecognisable from just a few seasons ago. There is a real buzz running through motorsport now, it’s partly down to impressive growth from the biggest of the domestic championships, Thailand Super Series, which is busy steamrollering its way into the future, but also the arrival of a world class racetrack in Buriram (which has brought with it rounds of prestigious international championships such as Japanese Super GT, World Superbike and the FIA World Touring Car Championship) has played a big part.

However it’s a whopping 430 km trip from Pattaya to Buriram and for the seaside city, which has for the last three decades the undisputed ‘home’ to Thai motorsport, it’s been something of a painful experience. The beating historic ‘heart’ of Thai motorsport lies within the Bangkok-ChonburiPattaya corridor but Bira Circuit, the epicenter, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last month, is fast approaching its twilight years and in fact a stay of execution came just couple of years ago when a change in the shareholder lineup saved it from the ignominy of turning into an extension to a golf course. Its aged, tired, crumbling and decaying as well as being too short and too narrow for the demands of top level racing today. Although the ghosts of decades of motorsport glories inhabit every centimeter of it’s 2.4 kilometers, it’s simply no longer up to scratch. Now the heartland of motorsport is set to have a new home in Sri Racha district. Around 30 km from Pattaya, the new site is lodged between Highway 3 and 7; it’s a perfect location in terms of access that’s matched by the beauty of its surroundings. The track is the bold dream of Thailand Super Series President Sontaya Kunplome, the one man who holds the hopes and ambitions of national motorsport on his broad shoulders. Fortunately for the sport he’s a man that is imbued with limitless ambition and clearly understands that motorsport is much more than just his passion, it’s his destiny. Not only has he turned TSS into the biggest championship ever seen in Thailand and one that has gained widespread international recognition in just three years, he’s also behind the Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival, the largest single event in domestic motorsport. So when Mr. Sontaya announced that he planned to build a new racetrack in the area, everyone stood up and took notice. The project’s ambitions are huge, it’s going to be built to a demanding world-class standard, right up to FIA Grade 2 and FIM Grade A, which basically means anything on 2 or 4 wheels bar F1 can race there. But it will be much more than a just a stunning racetrack, rather it’s set to become a true focal point for the sport, with hotels and other eye catching projects set to follow as the dazzling plan unfolds. The site demands ambition, it’s a staggering 990 rai (394 acres) and when Racing Spirit, the umbrella company for TSS, took five top design agencies for a first look around, the scope and potential jumped straight out. It couldn’t be anymore beautiful. It’s bookended by lush hills, there are plenty of elevation changes (40 m in total) and standout features, including a shimmering reservoir. Despite it being a blisteringly hot day, everyone took one look at the geography and in unison minds raced, imaginations worked overtime with the sheer potential of the site to host a truly iconic racetrack jumping straight out. So watch this space for further updates !

aving this month’s Pattaya Trader theme as Bangkok and relating to everything about Thailand's wonderful and diverse capital, it seemed to make sense that our Pattaya Personality would be a Bangkok Personality in this issue. As it was bought to my notice a few years back by a close friend, that there was a fabled DJ called Jim Davison, who had been broadcasting on the radio in Bangkok for as long as he could remember. Jim hit the headlines a couple of years ago when he became the oldest radio presenter in the world. Although he was a little fuzzy of his actual age at the time it was widely accepted that he was one hundred years old when he made the broadcast. He said

“Things were going really well till I hit 99.” His health was good and he was pretty active. But unfortunately now he suffers with a back problem and his mobility, getting around is no longer as easy as it once was. Born in Australia, Jim had what you would describe as a difficult childhood but he credits his grandmother for instilling in him the values of honesty and truthfulness. In 1942 Jim joined the Merchant Navy and left his native Australia never to return, apart from as a visitor. He transferred to the American Services and remained in the USA until the end of the war when he then became an Elevator Boy in the Big Apple. After facing a traumatic experience of being the subject of an armed robbery he left the States and went to London, but during the voyage met somebody that changed his life, and soon he was in Africa's Gold Coast working in a Goldmine in Prestea. During his stay in Prestea he met the love of his life: Penelope. She was not a particularly pretty lady having a wrinkled face, a mouth that was just too large and a very ugly pink behind! Penelope was of course a Chimpanzee. Jim rescued her from Takoradi Market,

“She had the saddest eyes peering at me from her bamboo prison.”

Jim bargained for her release and they became bosom pals during all the years of Jim's stay in Africa. However it was during his next move to Tangiers that his love affair with broadcasting came about. He took a job with the Pan American Broadcasting System and as a consequence of a loan repayment gone wrong found he had inherited what Jim thought was a bar, but turned out to be a very saucy bordello. Eventually when his time in Morocco came to an end he made his way back to London and worked in Radio Overseas Rediffusion for a year. Then his adventurous streak took a hold of him again and he went on over a long period of time to live and work in eight different countries. His sketchy but popular piano playing sometimes having to support his daily existence.

| EXPAT LIVING In 1956 he continued his radio work in Trinidad and then on to Caracas in Venezuela. His arrival was simultaneous with the revolution that was taking place so he was presented with a gun and two armed bodyguards to take him to the studio every day. Next on the agenda was Hong Kong and from 1962-64 Jim spent two years broadcasting on TV and radio, but money was tight and he was only scratching a living. So after a brief time in Brunei he found himself in Thailand in 1965 with $50 in his pocket and no job to go to. But Thailand immediately felt like the home he had been searching for after such a long and epic journey.

“I admire the tolerance, the respect for elders like myself,” he confided. His long time love affair with the country and its people who had adopted him flourished.

Jim decided to look for work in earnest and although there were about 100 Thai stations in the country at the time, there was no real English speaking station and definitely no commercial one. So Jim started visiting the Thai Public Relations Department where he put together a proposal for a show on Tor Tor Tor 95FM. Radio was just in it's infancy at that time and as the salary offered to him was a mere pittance, Jim went to secure sponsorship from local businesses. By 1966 the Early Bird Show was broadcast and proved to be an immediate hit. Jim's day started at 3.30am visiting the Bankok World Newspaper for up-to-date and current news which could be broadcast duringthe Early Bird Show that went on air at 6am.Within three months there was great demand for advertising time on the station and Jim became the highest paid employee at the company through his sponsors. The show continued for another ten years dominating the capital's airways. It was a commercial success and Thailand had woke up to the concept of radio advertising. Jim was not particularly aware of the fact but he had just launched commercial radio in Thailand single-handedly. I asked Jim what were the biggest differences between broadcasting back then and today?

“The pace was different back then, also radio was king with every household drooling over those corny old standards.” “You even had to have the radio on for the commentary if you were watching sport on TV.” The Early Bird Show was now an institution with it's fresh music and overall relaxed format. Jim was continuously injecting new ideas into the show and interviewing famous personalities. He used Sam Scott's Yard of Ale pub on Convent Road for many of his interviews and there he met luminaries of the time such as; Bob Hope, Margaret Whiting, Johnny Mathis and The Platters. Jim was at the forefront of broadcasting in the fledgling Thai radio scene being instrumental in bringing English Language stations to all the expats and businessmen living in the capital. His skills as a presenter being finally honed with his experience of the world and many other cultures. This continues to be reflected in his knowledgeable commentaries and general broadcasting style and technique. His voice is pure theatre with an accent inherited by years of traveling and being influenced by many different cultures and languages. Musing back on the years he says “Thailand has been very kind to me, and in my radio work I've always received so much support,” “In my private life I've made some wonderful friendships.” But he continued saying that during the last thirty years many friend have passed away, “It is a bit like going to a fairground when everybody has gone home.”

EXPAT LIVING “It has been radio that provided a lifetime of pleasure and fulfillment, bought me in contact with interesting people and in spite of the hard work, has given me lots of enjoyment.” “I suppose the rather sad fact on the matter of longevity, is that many people just can't keep up and fall by the wayside.” Jim has kept his good health due to the help of alternative medicine but his views on keeping fit is that

“Exercise can kill you.” Regarding the issue of his now being the oldest DJ in the world? Things are a little confused. Consulting the Guinness Book of Records he is currently not shown as such but there again Jim has never approached the publication to put his case forward. That accolade goes to a lady in the USA who is 94 but certainly if they knew of Jim he would undoubtedly beat her by some considerable gap. Jim is currently broadcasting on 88FM Radio Thailand, 90.5FM Radio Phuket and 96.75FM Radio Samui and you can tune in and listen to his unique broadcasts on Sundays. Seldom do people actually make it to Jim's age and certainly not many of them still work at 100. “I like to inject humour into the show where possible, not bawdy but a little risque,' he chuckles. Talking to Jim it is easy to see that his enthusiasm for what he does has not been diminished through the years, if anything it is as fresh now as ever.

“Some people think I should call it a day and perhaps they are right, but I would rather make these latter days worthwhile and endeavor to remain a has been rather than a never was.” I would never have the audacity to call Jim Davison a has been, his life has been rich and varied and he has squeezed every last drop out of it. Because of Jim's hard work and perseverance he has brought enjoyment and pleasure into many people's worlds.Seldom does somebody's life have so great an impact on so many others and I for one certainly look forward to hearing Jim's gravelly voice on the airwaves next weekend. It has been a pure pleasure to write this story for Pattaya Trader and chatting to Jim for the brief time I did left me wondering just how much more golden stories he had left to relay. So for those of you wanting to catch some of the Davidson magic remember to tune in to his Sunday afternoon programmes on 88FM Radio Thailand, 90.5FM Radio Phuket or 96.75FM Radio Samui.

Don’t reinvent the wheel One of the most frequently asked questions I get asked, by clients already retired or planning to retire in Thailand is how they can go about paying less tax in their country of birth or in the country where they earned or are earning their money This is hardly surprising given that we read so much in the press about the rich and famous using tax loopholes to avoid paying any tax at all. The Panama papers scandal has shown how far these same rich and famous are prepared to go to cheat the taxman. The Bernie Ecclestones of the world have accumulated vast fortunes which have escaped tax because they have arranged their affairs to their own advantage. Probably legally. The Panama papers scandal I feel will expose a lot of offshore illegality. I’m writing this the day after that big story broke so by the time you read this there will probably be a lot of tax dodgers exposed. Here’s why many EU residents would be tempted to act illegally. Even moderate levels of income are now taxed at 50% in many European countries, rising to as high as 60% when social and health tax are included. Whilst these very high tax rates may provide some of the best healthcare in the world, the problem is, this care is not usually available to those retiring outside their home country. To avoid tax many save for retirement through a com-

bination of pensions and other investments. The tax benefits of pensions in many countries are increasingly limited and most people resort to alternative forms of saving. These voluntary savings are then often subject to the same high rates of tax on income and gains despite the fact that people are trying to ensure they are not a burden on the state But it doesn’t stop there. If that wasn’t bad enough it nearly seems inconceivable that a government such as that in the UK would seek to apply further taxes on the death of the responsible citizens who had saved enough to look after themselves in their old age. How wealthy would reclusive billionaires be, if like the rest of us, they paid 40% income tax on everything they earned instead of nothing and 40% tax on their savings instead of nothing? Subsequently their families will inherit their parent’s entire fortune free of all taxes whilst the rest of our families pay at least 40% to a government who will no doubt use the funds to subsidise those who have saved nothing. Most people are happy to help the unfortunate but they balk at helping the downright lazy and slothful. To avoid being ripped off, especially if you are an expat or will be one soon, look at some alternatives Do what the super-rich do-but not the cheating part-you don’t have to if you’re an expat. Firstly they look at a jurisdiction for their savings and

Issue 187 | MAY 2016

investments where there is Government enforced capital protection for their investments.

investments - i.e. wealth tax, capital gains tax, income tax and there must be the prospect of avoiding capital gains tax.

Secondly the jurisdiction where their money is placed must have total confidentiality. You may know that Bernie is a billionaire but how many times have you read in the financial press anything specific about his fortune?

How many of the super rich let the taxman follow them into the grave and decimate their estates. They may not worry about it when they are dead but they rest in peace knowing their families won’t lose half their estate to the taxman and lawyers.

Thirdly and probably most importantly for anyone hoping to accumulate wealth there must be no tax on your savings or

This may all seem complicated and difficult to arrange. It may be if you are dealing with an onshore broker who has little knowledge of offshore investing or offshore trusts and the benefits to the normal investor, All success books will tell you that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to get rich. Instead copy what the super-rich do again without the cheating and there’s a better than average chance that you will prosper too.

TRAVELLING TO BANGKOK FROM PATTAYA

T

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya. So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily service leaves Pattaya at 14:20 and after twenty stops or so arrives in Bangkok at 18:25 or there about. If however you decide to travel by road a private taxi might be in the region of 1,200 baht depending on your destination in the capital. Or a popular option is by minibus or coach.Minibuses leave from all over Pattaya with a large stop at Pattaya Klang near the gas station and school. The fare is in the region of 150 baht one way but remember that these vehicles only depart when they are full with passengers. So if you are traveling at a quiet time you may have to wait. By the same token if the minibus is full then you will have to wait for another one to come along plus there is often an extra charge for luggage. There is no national network for booking these vans so it is really pot luck to secure a seat. There are regular hourly buses that leave North Pattaya Road Terminal and Central Pattaya Road Terminal which arrive at Morchit Mai and Ekkamai Bangkok terminals usually in around two hours. Also Bell Travel run luxury coaches three times a day from Pattaya to Bangkok for 370 baht, pick up and drop off at their respective offices. Or you can take the Airport Shuttle Coach that leaves Jomtien Thappraya Road Terminal and goes to Suvarnabhumi. Airport which costs 120 baht and takes approximately one hour forty five minutes. It is air conditioned and has comfortable seats with plenty of legroom. Just ensure whatever choice you make that you give enough time for your journey as the road works on Sukumvit can cause delays. The airport bus takes you straight to the airport terminal and getting to the centre of Bangkok is simple as you can then take the rail link into the capital. Obtain a strip token (Max 45bht) from the dispensing machine for your journey. This airport link train is fast and links with the MRT underground line . It is a smart way to get into the city avoiding the traffic and far cheaper than a taxi. Also there are many buses and minivans available to take you from the airport to the centre of Bankok, most of these depart from outside gates 3 and 8 and the Suvarnabhumi Public Transportation Centre. Victory monument is often the most popular termination, but a minivan will make several stops to suit the passengers. The best advice is always to leave yourself enough time to complete your journey, Thai driving and roads are notoriously bad and often there are unforeseen delays. If you are catching a plane or going to an important meeting bear this in mind before you set off.

Fun in Rio

T

he long, wet Low Season ahead of us affords us the opportunity to think about what can be improved in our lives and to take advantage of any excitement coming our way. For we couch potatoes, the highlight of the year will be the summer Olympic Games being held in Rio de Janeiro between the 5th and 21st of August. I’ve studied the list of events which made up previous Olympic Games and, frankly, there is room for improvement. Being a great thinker, I have come up with some practical ideas for the Rio games to make them even more spectacular. The ‘Track and Field’ events seem to be fine except for those ridiculous and embarrassing ‘Walking’ races. What sort of demented person thought that up? I suspect he’d been smoking some illicit substance. Either that or he got the idea after consuming a plate of three-day-old oysters then trying to make it to a toilet without soiling his pants. Fair dinkum, the competitors ‘walk’ as if trying not to dislodge a relay baton shoved up their bum. I hope all the relay events are completed before the ‘Walking’ races commence. Next, get rid of those long-winded team sports like baseball, softball, hockey and all the variations of football. They take too long and are already professional sports in many countries. Keep the Beach Volleyball though; especially the Women’s Beach Volleyball. The aquatic events are fine, with one notable exception. Synchronized Swimming has got to be the biggest waste of time, energy and resources I’ve ever seen. Nothing is more boring and I’ve heard that, while tickets to Olympic events are expensive and sold out well in advance, organizers have to hand out tickets to the Synchronized Swimming for free. My plan, therefore, is to replace that useless competition with a sport that is the most popular in the world and practiced by more people than any other activity known to mankind (apart from masturbation). Yes! I’m talking about fishing. Once the swimming competition is over, the pool can be drained of chlorinated water, refilled with fresh murky water and stocked with hundreds of what they call ‘sport fish’ of various sizes. The lane markers previously used for the swimming can be adjusted to divide the pool into eight equal sections, one for each competitor. Being as popular as it is, I expect every country in the world will put forward a team of its best anglers and the competition will consist of a series of elimination heats. Each heat will have a fourhour time limit involving rotating competitors counter clockwise to the next fishing area every thirty minutes. Each time a competitor lands a fish, his ‘pit crew’ will quickly detach the animal from the non-barbed safety hook (ISO 9304987162) on his line and rush it to be weighed by the judges. Naturally, the judges will first x-ray the fish to ensure no-one in the pit crew has tried to cheat by secreting a lead sinker down the throat of the distressed animal in transit. Then the fish will undergo a brief medical inspection by WWF volunteers and Animal Rights Activists dressed as polar bears before being returned safely to the water. The three competitors catching the

78 78

PATTAYA TRADER

highest total weight of fish will progress to the next round. Of course, being such a competitive sport and with the stakes so high, introducing fishing to the games will not be without controversy. The sneaky Americans will use the hi-tech fishing rods and lines invented by NASA for the Space Shuttle Programme, while the inscrutable Chinese will strengthen the lines used by their team with the almost indestructible sinew found in the liver of the OuterMongolian Spotted Desert Gecko which was once an endangered species. (It’s now extinct.) Special precautions will also need to be taken with the team from the Philippines who will all have to be strip-searched before each heat. No matter how many times you tell them that dynamite is not allowed, you can bet one will try to sneak a stick or two in. It will be mandatory for all competitors to have their urine tested for any PEDs (for you laypeople that means ‘Performance Enhancing Drugs) because the temptation for an angler to pop a steroid before his event will be great. All bait (squid, prawns, live worms etc.) will be provided by the Olympic Fishing Committee to reduce the risk of bait-tampering by over-zealous competitors. To dispel accusations of cruelty, each fisherman using the live worms will not be allowed to painfully impale the worm on the hook. Instead, he will strap the worm to the shaft using a tiny piece of Velcro and will be required to lift his line out of the water for ten seconds every five minutes to allow the worm to take a breath. Each fish caught will have to yield up a small blood sample (taken in a painless and humane procedure by a qualified fish doctor appointed by the IOC and overseen by representatives of Greenpeace). The reason being that the captured fish may have been slipped a Mickey Finn which made it excessively hungry, or worse, been given a dose of hallucinogen. “Hey man … look at all those pretty colours … wow!” But seriously, billions of people around the world are interested in fishing so why wouldn’t it make riveting television viewing? I get goosebumps just thinking about it: “The South Korean competitor has approached the bait table and … he’s chosen the fresh shrimp instead of the live worms! That’s a complete turnaround for him. He’s one of the favourites so let’s hope that this crucial decision doesn’t cost him the gold medal.” Each host country has the privilege of introducing a new sport to the games so I am drawing up a proposal and collecting signatures for a petition to the Brazilian government for fishing to be the sport for Rio. Closer to home, there is a suggestion that the Thai government has earmarked almost a thousand rai of land near Pattaya for the construction of sporting facilities in the hope of winning the right to host the 2051 games. Rumour has it that they will introduce ‘Connect Four’ to the list of Olympic sporting events. (And yes, in case you are wondering, my latest psychiatric report does imply that I’m on the verge of being clinically insane.)
