Issue 181 | NOVEMBER 2015

Hi So in Thailand. To most people the term Hi-So or High-Society in Thailand means rich and maybe also famous, but with a closer look it may be that the term encompasses a larger group of people. Upwardly mobile people who may not be rich but aspire to be so, or who feel they are on their way to being wealthy also enter high society status often by being high profile as opposed to simply being super-wealthy. They may attend highly publicised parties and functions, (where many wealthy people are), and their exposure in publications that follow such occasions may make them high society by association. In the UK in the 1980’s the equivalent of up and coming hi-so professionals were the “yuppies” Typically in well paid jobs and with disposable income, but often in debt and frivolous with their money, these people were well dressed and also attended high profile events. That time has now passed and the term Yuppie has disappeared with history even though there are plenty of similar upwardly mobile individuals around thirty years on. In present day Thailand, Hi-So means showing off some wealth by ensuring you have the most current and most expensive designer clothes and bags and other accessories such as shoes and jewellery. Yet once again this may be simply a case of being hi-profile rather than hi-society. There appears to be confusion between the two terms and although they are similar many Bangkokians would certainly point out that a gap exists. For the latter it is a natural requirement to be seen to be wealthy in public at high profile events to retain hi-so status, for the former it is necessary to be at those same events to get seen and to start to get labelled Hi-So. Apart from designer clothes and shoes, there are plenty of other trappings that go towards making a high society individual. A luxury car will go a long way to cementing the high society label to even the newest of newcomers. For Thai culture, Western influence certainly plays its part since Western luxury brands are seen to be more essential to uphold an image of wealth and luxury living. Thai brands also factor into the mix with branded properties being a good example of how luxury living is sought. Property companies such as San Siri and Raimon Land amongst many others make their luxury offerings to be perfect compliments to a high society life. There are plenty of Thai brands that have built a reputation of uncompromising quality and that fit well with a collection of Western branded goods. All of this sits well with people who have money to spend. With property in focus, Hi Society individuals often throw parties at their homes and so having a large luxury property, whether a city centre condo or a luxury house is all-important. In the glossy magazines and other press releases both in print and online, the property will often be showcased as much as the people enjoying a party

that is held within it, and it will be held up as a true benchmark of the wealth of the owners. Even furnishings in the property will need to be chosen with care so that there is no danger of a single piece harming the hi-so status of the owners. Branded furnishings and imported accessories will be high on the list of must-haves so that the cameras can catch every detail in the best light! Another viewpoint is that high society may indicate a birth right to a history of wealth. Having a family name that is connected to exceptionally wealthy individuals or well known money-making corporations could certainly qualify someone as being high-society. And as part of that connection to enormous wealth and status there would naturally be the requirement to attend social events that are well covered in the media, thus hi society people with connections to immense wealth are often also high profile too.
great people skills or management skills also goes a long way to cementing a high society link. People carrying themselves with a certain class and with excellent manners will find that they have to maintain their high standing especially given that they will be in the limelight for a good deal of time. Good education at a well regarded university or school instantly shows a facet of wealth, this being the high school fees and college fees for such a placement that will be the envy of many. One thing is for sure, maintaining a high society standing requires plenty of hard work since the public eye will be very unforgiving if any mistakes come to light. This is especially so in the age of social media where feedback is everything and where projecting a high society persona to please everyone becomes more and more difficult to achieve as time goes on!
The lifestyle of the high society individual may seem to be a life of relaxation and a distinct lack of any requirement to work hard. Yet most high society individuals are business owners or are high on the corporate ladder and work very hard to ensure their financial success continues or grows unabated. Along with hard work there are the social engagements that are expected so there is precious little time to relax. “Making it is one thing. Keeping it is quite another. Then there is old money and new money. Old money indicates a long history of wealth and a birth right to follow suit. It could also mean that political aspirations are in the mix, with money and power going hand in hand. New money is more closely related to high profile individuals who may wish to be seen with those powerful people but yet may have no history of wealth or power except for recent financial success. Being highly educated is also synonymous with being high society. Speaking eloquently either in Thai or English (or both) marks a true high society trait and this is one that takes time to acquire. Being intelligent in other ways such as homing

Snow Polo in St Moritz: Snow Ponies Meet Show Ponies
rolling thunder of hooves and thoroughbred snorting drowns the furious whack of mallets against a red ball. But the phalanx of ponies charging downfield towards you isn’t churning dust and turf — instead, sprays of snow and ice erupt from their studded hooves. Welcome to polo, St Moritz style.
Come winter, this Swiss Alps resort noted for its HiSo visitors, bobsledding and ski jumps hosts an array of winter events that sound like alpine circus stunts — winter golf played on “white greens”, snow cricket and equestrian events where show jumping meets snow jumping — but the big event is the snow polo championship. Polo’s most recent mutation was invented on the white turf of St. Moritz’s frozen lake in 1985. During what has become an annual three-day tournament, horses and players gather here to contend for the Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz. Spectators slip into arcane polo-speak — chukkas, neckshots, tailshots and backhands — as they watch outfits sponsored by Cartier, Maserati and Badrutt’s Palace Hotel slog it out for victory. A four-man team of polo players and their mounts bearing down on you evoke the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with steeds and riders alike blowing steam like dragon’s breath. The action is frenetic. Players swing their mallets with ballistic grunt as they tear across a ground about the size of four football fields towards an unguarded goalmouth. Horses are rotated in the breaks between the four chukkas (of seven-and-a-half minutes duration) that make up a match. Think blue. Blue blood flows in the veins of these purposebred mounts and probably in the veins of some of their comparably pedigreed riders. As a crush of horses tears past the air is tinged, too, with players using more than “occasional coarse language” in a bluetongue babble of German, Spanish, Arabic, French and English. Snow polo is now 30 years old, while polo itself may be the world’s oldest team ball sport and claims the title “the sport of princes”. Fittingly, a show pony crowd — sultans, celebs and sundry aristotrash — who canter into town on Lamborghinis and Learjets, attends the St Moritz tournament. However, once the mallets and hooves start flying, the “just-rattle-your-jewellery” classes (to borrow John Lennon’s phrase) find themselves shoulder to shoulder on the frozen lake or in the grandstands alongside local fans and the just-passing-through (because-I-can’t–afford-to-stay) crew.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS St Moritz has had plenty of practice in hospitality. Back in 1537 the pioneering physician Paracelsus praised the mineral springs of the local Engadine Valley. Thereafter this sunny area on the south side of the Alps gained renown as a summer retreat. In 1864 hotelier Johannes Badrutt challenged four English summer visitors to return in winter: if they didn’t like it, he would pay all their travel costs. If they did like it, they could be his guests as long as they wished. With little to lose, the visitors arrived at Christmas — and stayed until Easter. And thus began winter tourism in St Moritz. Alpine sport followed with events like the hair-raising Cresta run — in which speed freaks fling themselves head-first down an ice canal at 130 km an hour on appropriately-named “skeleton” sleds. St Moritz Polo Club was long established with the game being strictly a summer pursuit but in 1984 polo aficionado Reto Gaudenzi came up with the idea — at the time considered crazy — that the local team should play in winter on their icy lake. Within a year his “crazy” idea had become a reality and the tournament was born. Everything about this sport can be extreme, from the ball speed — it travels at up to 200 km an hour — to the weather. Famously, during the 1999 cup when the temperature on the wind-chilled lake dropped to –25 degrees C, the polo ponies were given places of honour in the VIP tent in order to keep them warm. Victory by an outsider team from snowless Abu Dhabi just added to the extremes. Last February the Australian-British Team Cartier won the 2015 Snow Polo World Cup for the third time. In front of some 12,000 spectators, Jonathan Munro Ford and his team convincingly shut out the Italian-German-Argentine Team BMW, securing a hat trick. Next time, who knows?

| LOCATION SPOTLIGHT
By Rhiannon Caldwell
In the 1960s Pattaya was discovered by the US military personnel who would travel from U-Tapao Army Air Field 40 km away in order to enjoy the beautiful half moon bay called Pattaya Beach. At the time of the Vietnam war Pattaya was nothing more than a simple fishing village, much like Na Klua still is today. The draw of the golden sands and the 4 km of perfect beach in a tropical setting was just the draw the soldiers needed to rest and relax. Hotels, shops, bars and restaurants began to open and now Pattaya is a bustling international tourist destination.
At the epicenter of what makes Pattaya great. If you want the best location in Pattaya then you simply must experience the Hilton. Today at the center of Pattaya Beach you will now find a beautiful shopping mall overlooking the sea, and attached to it is the Pattaya Hilton. At the epicenter of what makes Pattaya great. If you want the best location in Pattaya then you simply must experience the Hilton. The mall is not the only thing overlooking Pattaya Bay, the Pattaya Hilton has an amazing infinity pool with lush tropical landscaping and views from the center of the bay overlooking the sunset in the evenings. An absolute perfect place to enjoy an afternoon cocktail, or the company of your beloved tee rak. The lounge chairs poolside are simply divine giving you a bit of privacy and views that will take your breath away. It is little wonder that the Pattaya Hilton was awarded the prestigious Best Hotel in Thailand Award by the International Hotel Awards in 2013-2014. Photographer's note! If you get the chance the photo opportunities for sunset shots are absolutely breathtaking, especially the panoramic shots with a good camera. The end of the rainy season going into the cold season is the best! You can catch purple skies and spectacular lighting shots if you get the right weather. Maybe you will even catch a glimpse of the Admirillica Pirate ship that has been pillaging the Bali Hai Pier since last year. Ok so the pool is great, but what about the spa? Well what would a luxury resort be without a spa? It wouldn’t be a luxury resort that is for sure. The Hilton has hotels all over the world and they are renowned for the spa days that they offer the world over. Thailand is also known worldwide for their massage and spa treatments. Combine these two experts together and you have one of the

most euphoric spa experiences I have ever received.
skilled. Even if you are not staying in the hotel, book your spa treatments at eforea Spa.
Let’s put that into perspective a little, my introduction to the world of spa treatments such as facials and massage was at 19 when I became a concierge at a 5 star resort, I was literally given massages and facials by all the different therapists so that I could properly recommend the services to my clients based on what they needed. The BEST on the job training I have ever or will ever receive hands down. I now consider myself a spa expert as I have carried that training with me for more years than I care to admit in this article. the eforea Spa in the Hilton Pattaya takes the cake. You literally get your own bespoke spa package for whatever your wants needs and desires are. Facials, massages in multiple styles, body scrubs, aromatherapy, reflexology, and overall wellness are all available and in ready supply. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and best of all extremely
Since Hilton is known for doing everything over the top, they of course have a top notch hair and nail salon available as well. If it were me and, I had an endless budget to pamper myself I would show up and book the jet lag treatment, then get my hair and nails done, since travelling is always murder on my manicure, and then hit the pool for sunset cocktails and then perhaps a night dancing out on the town.
Dining Options Taking a holiday and dining out, just go together. There are five options for dining at the Hilton. The Shore is open 8 - 8 seven days a week and is located at the pool! There is a swim up bar, and many healthy options if you want something after a good workout. Don’t fret, if comfort food is what you crave there is plenty of that on the menu as well. Shore has a diverse menu, fantastic cocktails and a stellar location. Flare is an interesting one, open for dinner only from 6pm to 10:30 every evening they serve rural Thai cuisine cooked with ingredients from around the world and paired with wine. It makes about as much sense as adding sweet, salt, sour, spicy, and bitter to one bowl of ma ma noodles and having it taste like a gourmet meal but they have pulled it off. If you have a foodie friend that complains there is no fine dining in Thailand, take them to Flare, and you will win! The Edge is open at 6 o’clock in the morning and stays open until 11:30 pm. Each day has a different theme, and Friday is a celebration of seafood and should not be missed if you can help it. A veritable feast of the finest fish Pattaya has to offer. The kitchen is open and the chefs regularly interact with patrons. There is seating both indoors and outside on the terrace. All around the Edge is a great choice. Drift along as from 9 am to midnight in this special lounge. The ceiling is the coolest part, combined with the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea and the indoor water features you feel like you are adrift at sea when you visit Drift. Drift is not really for sitting down for a heavy meal but rather lounging to read a book, or chat with friends and enjoy healthy juice, or light tapas. The vibe is relaxed, and it can be a really cool place to hang out when it rains and the windows become waterfalls.
Perfect on one of Thailand's spectacular full moons. This is another place photographers will love, and grabbing a selfie with lights of the city behind you is killer. For night owls take to the sky at the Hiltons rooftop bar Horizon. Escape from the madness of Pattaya and enjoy the view of the bay with the wind in your face, and the moon in your view. Perfect on one of Thailand's spectacular full moons. This is another place photographers will love, and grabbing a selfie with lights of the city behind you is killer. Hilton is an international hotel chain and they have built the Pattaya Hilton hotel to follow the Americans with Disabilities Act standards. There is wheelchair accessibility, alarm systems to alert both visually impaired guests as well as hearing impaired guests, and a host of other amenities designed to give all guests equal access regardless of ability. Hilton Hotels was started by Conrad Hilton with a single hotel in Texas, USA in 1919. Today there are over 530 Hilton branded hotels around the world in over 78 countries spanning 6 continents.

THE ROYAL CLIFF IFor this Hi So edition of The Trader I thought I would mention my very favourite Hi So Hotel here in Pattaya: The Royal Cliff who are not too proud to have the occasional promotional event or bargain offer One of my favourite’s at the moment is the Shrimpfest promotion at their Breezeo restaurant where there is a selection of great “Gambas” dishes from 380 baht and I also really like their Indian restaurant where Maharani specials start from just 220 baht For more information or to make a reservation contact Guest Relations (6638)250 421 or email gromain@royalcliff.com
BAKING SODA Although this is rather less “Hi So” I feel I can wait no longer to share the benefits of my new latest and favourite cupboard ingredient: Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate). This is not to be confused with Baking Powder which usually also contains cream of tartar and starch and is best left for use in cooking. With all we hear about environmental pollutants from cleaning and personal care products that we wash down our drains and into our water systems, it’s always worth considering using more natural, less harmful alternatives. Whilst showing kindness to aquatic life and the environment generally, we can also protect ourselves from the array of toxins in household cleaning products. So like white vinegar you can find many uses for the humble box of Baking Soda but I have just listed my five favourites: 1. Freshen rugs by sprinkling baking soda on carpet, wait at least 15 minutes (preferably let sit overnight), then vacuum up. I recently saw this in action when an office carpet was soaked through during some of the worst of Pattaya’s flooding. After drying it still had a really nasty, damp smell and baking soda was liberally sprinkled on and eft over night to be hovered up the next day when the smell had completely gone. 2. A ¼ cup baking soda mixed with white vinegar (to give it a thick, creamy texture) is great for bathroom cleaning – especially for the grouting between tiles. 3. Soak your toothbrushes in a mixture of ¼ cup baking soda and ¼ cup water and then let them stand overnight for a thorough cleaning. This also works on hair brushes and combs if you soak them in a mixture of 1 teaspoon baking soda and a small amount of warm water, rinse and then dry. 4. Amazingly you can even use it as a beauty product as mousses, serums, sprays, and other products build up in your hair and can leave it looking limp. So if you sprinkle some baking soda into a dollop of your regular shampoo. Wash and rinse as usual your hair will be shinier and more manageable when you're done. It’s also supposed to be good for getting rid of dandruff. Or you can even use it as a dry shampoo by taking a few pinches of baking soda in your hand, rubbing it onto your roots and then brushing it through. 5. Finally and perhaps most usefully in a country where you take your shoes off and where feet can suffer from hard dry skin and generally get dirtier and harder to care for than a more “carpeted environment” , you can make a footbath/ Use a solution of three parts baking soda to one part warm water. Let your feet soak in the basin for about 10 minutes, rinse and then apply a rich body lotion to your legs and feet. Wrap a warm towel around them, and let sit for another 5 to 10 minutes so that your legs and feet will then feel salon smooth. Don’t forget for a bargain night in with a good film and a great delivery service Nick The Pizza is offering a 10% discount through the month of November just phone: 038 373 418 and quote NOV10PT when you order If you have any thoughts, suggestions or comments please write to me “Belinda Bargain Hunter” at:pattayabargainhunter@outlook.com

Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal:“a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces.”
In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function. Established in 1987 The Pattaya International Ladies Club now has a membership of over 200 women of all ages, from 34 countries, and all walks of life. With the growth of PILC has come the opportunity to offer a wide range of activities and social events, and the ability to raise funds for charitable causes.
Such as La Dolce Vita
When around 100 PILC member and friends gathered to celebrate ‘La Dolce Vita’ – the good life – at the Centara Mirage Grand Ballroom. It was a fabulous evening with elegant canapés and “bubbles” on arrival a beautifully decorated ballroom and never ending buffet. Absolutely a night to remember Barry Upton and his ‘band of swingers’ were fantastic and there were some truly impressive displays on the dance floor. (You know who you are.) Barry’s music as always got the crowd going and there were some skilful audience participation moments with tamborines! Some of the lucky guests were able to take home more than memories when the raffle was drawn. Congratulation's in particular to Tess Gorden who won the top prize which had been donated by Fisher & Paykel. However the absolute highlight of the entire evening had to be the incredible dessert buffet. It was beautifully arranged and so extensive a spread that an entirely separate room had to be devoted to it! There were macaroons, cupcakes, tarts, mousses, crepes suzette, crème brulees, ice cream, fruit and even a chocolate fountain! In an attempt to work off the dessert buffet and also due to the great music the dance floor was packed for the rest of the evening and by the end of the evening the verdict was unanimous: La Dolce Vita had well and truly been celebrated. Of course an event like this doesn’t happen without a huge amount of work and a big thank you must go out to the enthusiastic group of ladies who put it all together. PILC would like to thank: Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort (in particular David Nowak who really pulled out all the stops and made sure we had a beautifully decorated room, fantastic buffets and exceptional service throughout) and sponsors Siam Winery, Fisher & Paykel, Friends of Homer, Sands Development, Desert Diamonds and Easy Panel. St Andrews students from Years 11-13 spent a challenging and fruitful day at the Bangkok Model UN conference, at NIST school in Bangkok. For most of them, this was their first experience of Model UN, and they were keen to do a good job. Having spent the past few weeks carefully researching, writing positions papers and preparing resolutions, they joined their respective committees to debate important, current global issues such as the militarisation of space, international drug trafficking and the development and promotion of renewable energies. Several resolutions were successfully passed and the delegates enjoyed the chance to develop and sharpen their negotiation skills with over 300 other students. In the words of UN protocol, 'Clapping is in order.' Well done to you all! Also students from St. Andrews Green Valley attended one of the many ‘Exceptional Learners’ events provided by the first & only school on the Eastern Seaboard awarded ‘Gold’ by independent inspectors (CfBT) & ‘Outstanding’ in all categories.
SCHOOL AND EDUCATION SPECIAL
Green Valley Secondary Students participate in Thailand’s annual model UN and The G.A.T.E.ways Festival of Workshops in Bangkok
The G.A.T.E.ways Festival of Workshops in Bangkok is aimed at providing opportunities for highly able and gifted children with special educational needs. Like-minded students participate in programs that will challenge them intellectually and help develop their individual talents. The G.A.T.E.ways workshops link up experts in a given field with teachers knowledgeable about the special needs of gifted children, how they learn, and how to provide a differentiated curriculum for these children. The workshop was attended by other top international schools in Thailand with St. Andrews Green Valley, NIST, ISB and Patana providing the vast majority of the students at the event. "It was a great opportunity for my children to take part in G.A.T.E ways festival in Bangkok. They discovered a new world of science and creative thinking." Inthira Srihawan (Parent at SAISGV) G.A.T.E.ways programs are inquiry based, with lots of hands-on activities, problem solving, higher- order thinking skills. Programs are designed to take children well beyond the regular curriculum. “The G.A.T.E.ways trip was amazing! Learning how to turn lego pieces into a controllable robot was a lot of fun. Knowing how to measure the temperature, pressure and light dazzled me. The time I spent with friends learning was an experience of a lifetime” Arnon Wu (Student at SAISGV) St Andrews has built a reputation for being the leading school in the area at providing for Gifted Students. We provide a world class education for all of our students, and our Accelerated Learning Program has seen students entering IGCSE exams early if they are capable of doing so. By doing this, we accelerate our student’s learning thereby giving them a better chance to achieve higher IGCSE and IB results and in turn improved opportunities for University entry.

trace elements all looked at. You can see a really great rotating image of your spine on the monitor and it was evident that I have a slight problem with my neck and the top of my spine – unsurprisingly from too many years office work sitting at a desk ,wrongly postured in front of a computer! You are also asked to complete a breath test inhaling, holding and then exhaling through a tube to monitor your lungs and heart rate.
Turning into Pratumnak Road at the lights from Theppraya and then almost immediately left into Soi 6 is a large imposing, grey building housing “Surecell” not just a clinic with a single practitioner but a complete Medical Centre housing a ground floor general practice for the everyday malaise and a multi-specialty center on the 3rd floor. Founded by Dr Peter Lewis with his Swiss partner Bernhard Schwyn this is one of ten clinics located in Australia, Thailand and Bangladesh with more to come. After interviewing Dr Lewis for last month’s magazine I decided to make a follow up visit to get a closer look at the very interesting Bio Scan department. As Dr Peter says this: “acts as a tool to assess probable risks and then allow for diagnosis and follow up tests if needed”. Obviously it makes sense to address any potential problems sooner rather than later and you don’t even have to set aside days or weeks for treatment:
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Surecell Pratumnak Clinic – The Bio Scan Department
Then three days later a complete report was emailed through to me – obviously if you prefer you can call in to collect a hard copy and this report had an incredible amount of details. I believe that getting a test like this can work in many ways. As well as the most obvious way of alerting you to any current or potential problems it also reinforces common sense notions that you know you should adhere to. Sensible rules about drinking and diet that are given more credence when a doctor sits you down and explains their importance in your particular case. Surecell’s websites contain lots of detailed information and many fascinating explainer videos showing the many procedures on offer. (www.surecell.com and www.surecell.co.th which even has a Thai language version) However if you prefer you can always just call in and you will be sure to see smiling, helpful staff on hand, happy to go into detail with you regarding what is available and at what cost for your particular needs.
“Our Pratumnak medical center allows almost all processes to be done in-house (except for X-rays or MRI’s – we will add those facilities at a later stage – or complex blood tests which we send out to specialized laboratories). Your total time spend at our clinic will not be more than a couple of hours for most of our treatments. A general Check up will take no more than 15 min” So I went to the clinic for a test and as someone with a very low pain threshold am pleased to announce that the entire procedure was completely pain free! After the usual height, weight and blood pressure routine I was asked to sit with a clip on my thumb while my hands and feet were placed on pads and a couple of pads at my temples connecting me to the apparatus while a small current ,completely imperceptible, passed through me to gather the necessary information. Whilst this procedure was taking place I was able to look at the monitor and review the results with the Doctor. All pretty straight forward with rotating diagrams showing each area of the body being diagnosed and with an easy to view traffic lights approach i.e. green all clear amber slight problem might require further analysis and red…..well you get the idea. I was immediately told about my personal risk profile for cholesterol, diabetes, and the function of organs such as the pancreas and liver. However, what surprised me was that the doctor could also deduce from what he saw that I was having problems sleeping – and was able to recommend natural supplements such as sesame, pumpkin, radish to help with this. Also that my PH class is a little acid so that I should therefore include more vegetables and less starch/pasta in my diet (which can cause acidity) . All fascinating stuff + BMI, lymphatic system, vitamins and

S
o for those of you who have seen Yoga Pattaya’s big poster - you know the one, at the traffic lights junction between Thepprasit and Thappraya Road - do not be intimidated by the sight of a man who can raise his leg high enough to touch his ear, there are beginners’ classes and it was to one of these that I attended. The studio is down Soi 12 Thepprasit - go through the barriers as if you are just going into another housing village and as you turn to the right you will a road full of shops and studios the first one you notice being Yoga Pattaya, there is plenty of parking opposite. I went to a 7:15pm class on a Monday evening, feeling quite brave and ready for a challenge. I came armed with my yoga mat but don’t worry if you do not have one. they have them available on sale and as another good service even house their students’ mats. This is a great idea as it means that if you are a regular attendee you don’t have to lug your mat to every class - but first things first, to my beginner’s class I go. Clothing should be comfortable, easy to move and stretch in. Obviously leotards and leggings are ideal but T Shirts and shorts were also being worn by some of my classmates and of course with yoga there’s no footwear to worry about as we were all bare footed. However one thing you should definitely consider is bringing a small towel with you as to be honest when the class

started it was pretty hot up in the studio the windows were open to allow some night time breeze but it was fairly humid and at times I felt as though I was being given a free sauna with my class - probably very beneficial and healthy to my overall experience mind you. The class was with Timur and was Ashtang Yoga a style of yoga that is a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga named after the “eight limbs”. The object is to stay for five to eight breaths in each posture, So we started by practising our breathing and as well as describing which part of the diaphragm we were to use I particularly liked Timur’s helpful tip of telling us that if we aspired to sound like Darth Vader whilst we were breathing that would mean that we were probably doing it right. There then followed a lot of “dogs”: Downward facing dog, said to be a pose so good for many of the things that plague our society today: fatigue, back pain and stiffness from sitting all day, This position alone is said to have lots of health benefits such as building bone density, waking you up and boosting your circulation.”Ashtanga” we were told “should always be flowing to make you strong and flexible”. When you are struggling the instructor will show you the “beginners option” as there is usually a less taxing version of what he is asking you to do should you require it. However be warned you should not attempt to just do your own thing as “there are strong rules in Ashtang Yoga It must be how it is”.
Issue 181 | NOVEMBER 2015
Thereafter there was a lot of stretching and holding of poses. Lotus positions with one or both legs - or versions of for those of us a little stiffer than our class-mates. Again another Ashtanga rule “It must be how it is” stating that you always start with the right leg and then follow with the left. Towards the end of the class my limbs seemed more supple and warmed up and the breeze began to pick up as the evening wore on making the room far cooler. Just when I was feeling slightly pleased with myself Timur came over and gently but firmly maneuvered me into a whole new position which made me realise that I still had quite a way to go. I also watched in amazement at what was being achieved by some of the bodies around me there and there was a definite feeling of “Don’t try this at home kids”!

HEALTH & WELLNESS
The class is conducted in both Russian and English so you can easily understand what is being asked of you. I particularly liked the comment I was given to show how the palms of my hands should be flat on the mat and strong on the floor “Like a tiger ready to pounce!”
One word of warning. Although this was class was only advertised as a one hour class because of our teacher’s enthusiasm and the number of students he individually attended to, it actually stretched into two hours. During this period there were definitely times when I felt myself rather over-zealous and under-experienced. I would take it rather too quickly when delighted with some unexpectedly good flexibility and as a word of warning I would say that you should definitely work on baby steps and not over exert yourself or get too ambitious. However Timur was quick to notice the grimace on my face when I did this and told me to relax for a while and just breathe or put me in a different position to stretch me out in a alternative posture I particularly liked the rocking back and forth in a kind of “curled up crab position” said to be good for your spine and returning you to a relaxed pose to finish with some more deep breathing at the end of the class. Twice a week there is a “level Zero” class apparently for “absolute beginners” or anyone suffering with lower back problems and if you have never had a class or it has certainly been awhile since you last attended one I would recommend starting off with one of these and building up your strength. As well as the Ashtanga Vinyasa class there is also Stretching yoga, Hatha yoga and even Prenatal classes. They run throughout the day from 7:30 in the morning until 7;15pm at night so you are sure to find a day/time to suit. manoevered An introductory lesson costs just 200 THB, thereafter it is 350 THB for 1 hour class but 3000 if you have 12 classes in a month. . Go on give it a try !

Where to find the best Sunday Roast Dinner in Pattaya I was sad to read in the Daily Mail newspaper recently, that the tradition of sitting down for a Sunday Roast Dinner with the family is dying out in the UK, with families preferring to play video games on the TV and ordering takeaways instead. Since becoming an expat some 15+ years ago, I learnt to appreciate some of the finer things of being brought up in Britain and being British and apart from Christmas time in the UK, there’s nothing more near and dear to me than about being British than sitting down for a traditional Sunday Roast dinner with all the trimmings and a pint of Guinness. Ok well the later is Irish I suppose but that’s my perfect Sunday “in a nutshell” and by seeing so many restaurants packed for Sunday dinner, it seems I’m not alone. Even the Thai girlfriends seem to have taken a liking to a good roast dinner and why not? Even the Thai girlfriends seem to have taken a liking to a good roast dinner and why not? Although most Thais I’ve encountered do not appreciate the stuffing and gravy the beloved Yorkshire puddings are a bit hit, my wife smothers hers in apple sauce, bless her. I know most people will have differing opinions as I believe they mostly choose the particular roast dinner most like the one their mothers’ used to make: The roast dinner they grew up on. In my opinion its the “Ultimate Comfort Food” for us British, apart from maybe a good fry up for breakfast, which I will write about: “Where to find the best breakfast in Pattaya” in another article, coming soon. So with Christmas time soon to be upon us, I thought I should write about where to find “The Great British Roast Dinner” as these restaurants will certainly be good options for Christmas dinner as well. In no particular order, here are my top picks for a great Sunday Roast in Pattaya.
The Punch & Judy
The Punch & Judy located off Thepprasit road soi 8, really has to be one of my favorite places for Sunday lunch as it comes with all the trimmings and really tastes home cooked, everything being cooked from scratch. It’s the delicious mix of sage and onion stuffing and pork sausage meat that really makes this particular establishment stand out from the competition. With roast lamb normally being my favorite, I surprising always opt for chicken at the P&J as they seem to really excel at roasting their chicken. It’s a healthy portion with different cuts of the chicken, which is nice, as there is nothing worse than a breast guy getting leg or a thigh guy getting breast. No I haven’t drifted off topic to go go bars on walking street, but did I mention the stuffing, which is really the highlight for me ? It’s the delicious mix of sage and onion stuffing and pork sausage meat that really makes this particular establishment stand out from the competition.
A choice of no less than six meats are available at the counter and you are welcome to try them all, the honey roasted ham is a real favorite of mine and I often order the Sunday roast dinner via “Door 2 Door” delivery service, and what a generous serving they give you, wow, impossible for me to finish! So I always leave my favorite “the ham” until the next day for sandwiches, not forgetting plenty of mustard. If that wasn’t enough, they also offer all the trimmings like sage and onion stuffing, pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon) plus a homemade steak and kidney pie. The Sportsman as the name suggests is also a great venue to watch football, rugby or whatever sporting event is on at that particular day you choose to visit.
The first time I enjoyed a Sunday dinner at P&J I remember thinking to myself, that someone has put a lot of time and effort into getting this right. So well done to whoever created this masterpiece of a Sunday Roast.
The Sportsman on soi 13 off beach or second road
Now The Sportsman’s concept is a traditional British carvery with a choice of soups for starters and an as “eat as much as you like” policy that is exceptional value for money for those with or without a big appetite. Saying that, I should also mention that just because it’s a “eat til you drop” concept, quality has not been compromised. This is a restaurant were you get both Quality and Quantity This is a restaurant were you get both Quality and Quantity
Simple Simon’s
As well as being one of my favorite places in Jomtien for full Engligh breakfast, Simple Simon’s also does a very good roast dinner on a Sunday with a choice of beef, lamb, chicken & pork, served with all the trimmings at very reasonable prices. It’s very hard to leave this establishment without picking up a few treats from back home. It also has a delicatessen offering everything you could possibly

crave from the UK, scotch eggs, corned beef as well as great bacon, gammon and a selection of sausages, so it’s very hard to leave this establishment without picking up a few treats from back home.
The Mediterranean located near Lake Maprachan
Now this little gem of a restaurant, located over the other side of Sukhumvit road (commonly known as the “Darkside”) has a concept that will certainly appeal to any “Yorkshire Pudding” fans out there. The roast diner comes served in a giant Yorkshire pudding As the roast diner comes served in a giant Yorkshire pudding, almost as big as the plate it is on, which is ideal for capturing and soaking up all that lovely thick gravy. Once again everything is cooked from scratch and the outdoor seating and children’s swimming pool area (which is free for guest to use) makes an attractive alternative from the air con British pub style restaurants, especially for diners with young children. So if you are with the family in the Lake Mapracan area on a Sunday, be sure to stop by for lunch, they also have some great beers on draft and a pretty good selection of affordable wines.
other pies and puddings from which to choose dessert. Getting back to the main course itself there’s a choice of lamb, chicken, beef and pork or you can have a mixed plate for an extra 50 THB. The serving is very generous, so much so that the vegetables come on a separate plate. I find the lamb, pork and gravy in “The Ritz” probably the best in town. It’s that good!
Café Des Amis
Now this isn’t a Sunday roast dinner establishment as such, but the popular fine dining restaurant “Café Des Amis” used to have on its menu a roast lamb dinner that was so good, I feel it deserves a mention. Everything once again is cooked from scratch, which is quite an undertaking for a single roast dinner, so best to order in advance when making the reservation. You get your very own joint of roasted lamb rump, nicely marbled and cooked to your liking, served with two Yorkshire puddings, Brussels sprouts and roast potatoes cooked in duck’s fat, peas, carrots etc. This is a fine dining version of a roast lamb dinner and they really do a great job at Café Dez Amis. So much so that it is impossible to book for Christmas dinner, as the same regular clientele come back year after year, so unless someone “pops his clogs” (I’m only joking) or they manage to extend the seating arrangements somehow, you will have to book for Christmas Eve or New Years Eve instead.
The Ritz in Jomtien
Pattaya has often been described as a town where you can get everything and anything for a price, but this restaurant offers Sunday roast dinners every night of the week except Sunday. So if you happen to miss your Sunday lunch one week or you just get a craving, this is a really good place to get your fix.
I would imagine with all the above establishments, you are guaranteed to have a great traditional Christmas Diner, but they are popular restaurants, so I would advise you book early!
The Ritz does stand out from the rest, as it offers 3 courses for 340 THB! It’s located in Jomtien complex in the boys town area, but everyone is welcome and the staff are really helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for them, an extra bowl of gravy, no problem, extra stuffing, no problem, extra well done roast potatoes, you get my drift? I really didn’t want to mention pricing in this article, as I find it hard to put a value on a good roast diner, every restaurant in this article in my mind offers great quality, quantity, service and value for money but The Ritz does stand out from the rest, as it offers 3 courses for 340 THB! And believe me the roast diner here is as good if not better than all the competition. For starters they do an amazing chicken liver pate plus various soups and salads and for dessert the lemon cheesecake is an absolute winner, in a kind of “school dinners” kind of fashion.Maybe not acceptable to fine dining crowd, but I just cannot get enough of the stuff ! They also have numerous

Nick the Pizza Delivery Service Typically I am very good about eating at home. I shop at the Thai markets, I cook at home, and when I do eat out it is typically nothing more than street food, however there are those occasions where the American in me gets an undeniable craving for pizza. There is also the side of me that every once in awhile I just don’t want to see my kitchen. On those particular days I turn to Nick the Pizza. Nick the Pizza has a well deserved reputation as one of the best delivery places in all of Pattaya. They are fast, reliable, and best of all reasonably priced. Nick the Pizza uses quality ingredients in all their dishes, whether Thai, Russian, American, Indian, English or otherwise. With the diversity of the menu, the partnership with The Caddyshack a popular English Pub & Restaurant, the experience of the staff, and the delivery model there is something for everyone no matter how finicky the eater is. Nick the Pizza is a perfect option for those parties that will have a diverse group of people which is often the case in the melting pot of Pattaya we call home.
Pizza The pizza selection at Nick the Pizza is nearly as diverse as the rest of the menu. Build your own pizza choosing any of 23 different toppings ranging from bacon, salami, pineapple, green paprika, squid, mussels, mushrooms, egg, black olives, anchovies, jalapeno peppers, and many other options. Select the Small 10” size of Large 14” size pizza all with hand tossed crust made from scratch and cooked in their pizza ovens. If you need suggestions for good pizza combinations the menu is chock full of suggestions, 18 of them in fact. From the classic Margarita, to the signature Nick’s Special which has special tomato sauce, cheese, bacon, pepperoni, and pineapple. Another signature pizza from Nick’s is the Lamb Kebab Pizza. The choices are extensive, and you will not be disappointed.

Other Goodies The meat from the kebab pizza is prepared in the traditional doner fashion and there are both chicken and lamb kebabs available. You can also have a great cheeseburger, chicken sandwich or add bacon to the cheeseburger. Try southern American fare with fried chicken or BBQ ribs. There are a couple of different pasta dishes, nine different baguettes, and a few salads to choose from if you want something on the lighter side. If you fancy Thai food there are a dozen different dishes to choose from including fried rice, green curry, drunken noodles (Spaghetti Kee mao) and several others. In addition to Thai food, there are some Indian dishes on the menu as well.
Caddyshack Delivery Bonus In addition to all the awesome food at Nick the Pizza they also do delivery for Caddyshack daily. Caddyshack has traditional English fare, including lamb roast, meat pies, beef stew, liver & bacon with onions, and many other choices. As you can see with all these choices you can make a party of 2 - 20 happy with the variety available. Nick the Pizza has a diverse menu and uses quality ingredients. It is no wonder they have enjoyed so much success over the last ten years delivering food all over Pattaya………..

Nam Tok Moo aka Waterfall Pork
N
am Tok Moo aka Waterfall Pork gets its name from the technique in which you cook it. The combination of the fat produced from browning the meat and then adding in the stock, the meat will stew and cook in its own juices, creating the waterfall effect. Sometimes when this dish is translated to English on Thai menus it reads spicy pork salad. It is far from the traditional tossed salad or green salad that we think of in the west, however it has all the required elements to make a wonderful salad. Meat, cabbage, and other greens and herbs, and a wonderful sauce. To fill out the dish serve with sticky rice or jasmine rice. The dish is supposed to be spicy, however you may control that depending on the number of peppers you add to the dish. If you want it authentic add 10, if you need to cool it off only add 2, it’s that simple. For those that are adventurous the little green thai chili peppers can really go nuclear in your mouth. If you feel you are up for it I highly recommend using them. The other option of course is to put extra chili peppers on the serving platter so those that can take the heat can add their own.
Section 1
• ½ kg of pork loin thinly sliced • 1 T cooking oil (I like to use Sunflower oil, I stay away from palm oil) • 5 cloves of garlic smashed • Thai chili peppers 2 = not spicy (mai pet) 4-6 = little spicy (pet nit noi) 6-10 = pet (spicy) 10+ = (pet maak or seeeeeep eli) • Knorr Pork Broth ½ of a cube • ½ cup of water • 1 t - 1T of red chili powder • the juice from ½ of a lime • 1 t fish sauce to taste • 1 t oyster sauce • 1 t sugar (I like to use brown sugar or raw cane sugar)
Section 2
• ½ small red onion (hua hom dang) sliced julienne style • ½ bunch of cilantro (paak chee) chopped • 4-6 green onions diced • 4-6 sprigs of Thai Basil leaves removed from stems chopped • 1 T Thai toasted rice
and mix it in, and place the dish on a serving platter. Top with the remainder of the Thai toasted rice. On the serving platter should also be ½ head of cabbage cut into two quarters, the long beans should also be cut into quarters and the basil should be left on the stem. Serve with Thai jasmine rice or sticky rice as desired.
How do I eat this dish? When eating the dish you can spoon it over jasmine rice, or if you want to experience this dish in a more traditional way eat it with sticky rice. For the best results you are going to make little tacos wrapped in cabbage. For the perfect presentation you will want to lay out a piece of cabbage, then layer it with a few basil leaves, next smash the sticky rice into a nice little pancake that fits on the cabbage leaf then put some of the pork over the top of it and layer in a piece or two of long bean, wrap and eat with your hands. The sticky rice absorbs the dressing from the pork and you get all the flavors wrapped up in a convenient little pouch that is easy to eat with your hands. I discovered this by accident because they reminded me of fajitas and I have been told time and time again I have Isarn in my soul.
Section 3
• half a head of green cabbage • 4-6 long beans • 4-6 sprigs of Thai Basil leaves still on the stems In a wok or skillet heat up the oil. Once it is nice and hot toss in the garlic and chili peppers. The number of peppers will vary depending on how spicy you want this dish. Traditionally this is a spicy dish from the Isarn region of northern Thailand. Stir fry the peppers and garlic for about 30 seconds and then add the thinly sliced pork to brown. Once browned but not cooked all the way through add the water and Knorr powder and bring to a boil. Once boiling add the remainder of the ingredients in section one. **This is a good time to taste the broth. I like mine a little bit sour, and really spicy, not very salty and not very sweet. You can adjust your elements to increase or decrease as you wish. Now turn off the heat and add the cilantro, red and green onions and the basil leaves and mix together. Take half the toasted rice

Rugby in Pattaya
N
ow that the Rugby Union World Cup 2015 is over what does one do to quench that rugby need in Pattaya besides TV? Inspired by your team’s performance? After all if you were playing they would not have gone out in the first round, right? Want to recapture some of that youthful vigor on display? Ladies can play rugby too. Well, there is no need to worry because Pattaya Panthers are here. That’s right, Pattaya has its own rugby team that compete in the 15’s and 10’s format of the game. You may have looked up rugby in Pattaya before and came up with an outdated web page but the Facebook page is still active and updated. For those with web content management skills here is an opportunity to be a vital rugby team player without actually being on the field. Those that follow the team’s Facebook page would have seen the activity over the past month or two. Numbers have increased after the summer holidays with the continuous churn of expatriate members bringing in young blood, brawn and brains (not necessarily as one package). Games have been shipping in too. Tournaments look like a serious possibility. Chiang Mai 10’s – here we come (?). There is a sense of regrowth among existing members that something special is about to happen. The rejuvenation is on. Are you being rejuvenated? Several ladies have shown interest in playing rugby too. Hopefully, the numbers will go up so that the Panthers can resurrect the better half of the game. In the first 15’s game in almost a year Panthers played the Thai Navy 3rd Team at Chumphon Navy School on the 27th September 2015. The consensus is the Panthers won; it was a friendly with minimal formalities. The game was followed by a family social on the beach hosted by the Thai Navy. Kudos for the organizers, opposition and players. It was an exemplary day of rugby if a definition was ever needed. The second game one week later was against a visiting Sri Lankan Navy team. This game turned out to be the opposite of the previous for Panthers. There was no final score due to the game being called off early. Old school rugby attempted to be played by nimble young lads who were not told about the original old boys at Panthers. Brain triumphed over brawn. There was another social at the Tavern after the game that saw the Panthers players and significant others enjoy the World Cup games. The social mix at the Pattaya Panthers is positive. A variety of nationalities, game skill levels and occupations contribute to some wonderful trivia moments in the pool after training. Several players, Thais and expats, from Bangkok, have joined the Panthers for training sessions and games. The growth mode is reaching beyond the Pattaya boundary. So start your preparation for Japan 2019 with training sessions every Thursday at 7:00 pm. Most sessions end with a game of touch rugby. There are many activities planned, besides rugby, to incorporate the family, social scene and adventure. PAGS Tournament from Phoenix A Family Affair
O
ne hundred and nineteen players, including nine ladies, made the short journey this month to the Phoenix course, where we played the Mountain & Ocean combination. Although the weather was hot and humid there was a light breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace. We played from the white tee markers , with some being back, while others were a little forward, but still the course provided a solid challenge for all. Tee markers were adjusted, to accommodate Phoenix hosting the Thailand Ladies Amateur Championships as they were keeping the ladies teeing areas pristine for their tournament.
Most months there may be one or even several outstanding performances for the tournament. This month that mention should probably go to the Suominens, Olli Pekka (9) in the A flight Mens & Anne Maija (32) in the Ladies. Both figured in the placings in their relevant flights with Olle getting the maximum 2 technicals & Ann also getting a NTP. Jormi Heinjoki (28) was the only male golfer to break 40 points on the day, leading the C grade, home by a clear 6 points to Roman Lastamet (22) with Willem Lasonder (20) getting 3rd spot a further point behind on 37 points. The B flight, for handicaps 13 - 18, was tightly contested, with all placegetters separated by only 1 point. After countback, the placings were as follows, Bjorn Olaf Noren (15) in 1st spot after edging Brian Green (16) into 2nd, after both shot 38 points. Bjorn recording 22 points on the back 9, to Brian’s 17, while in 3rd spot was Staffan Lyrestram (15) with 37 points. The A flight (0 – 12) was another tightly contested division, with Jonny Lindberg (11) the clear winner with 38 points, while the 2nd & 3rd spots had to be whittled down form 4 players, all on 37 points. Gerd Riedler (8) got the silver after his 20 points on the back 9, with Olli Pekka Suominen (9) getting the bronze after his 19 on the back 9. Unlucky players were low gross winner & runner up, Jack Grinvold & Mike Allidi. The Low Gross also required a countback, to separate Jack Grinvold & Mike Allidi, after both shot a commendable 74 off the stick. Jack getting the chocolates, with his back 9 of 37 to Mike’s 38. With a field of 9 Ladies this month, it was Choojai Sawasdee (28) leading the way with a day’s best of 46 points, to go with her long drive prize, ahead of the afore mentioned Anne Maija Suominen (32) with a more than creditible 41 points. Special mentions go out to multiple winners in the technical prizes, getting their maximum 2 prizes, among others, were Mika Vilkainen & Montri. BBQ King Dave was at it again, who, with his capable staff, kept all attendees well satisfied with their tasty offerings for the night. We will all look forward to another successful tournament with next month’s event at Patvia on the 25 November. Contact Shane on 0859459689 to ensure your preferred tee time.

Hi Folks, well winter is well under way, the wind has changed round to mainly from the north. This brings cooler temperatures but also brings “Chinese air” as the local Thais call the very poor visability and coughs that it brings. My boat has moved from the north side to the south side of the dock and it will never dry out during the day until mid February. However it will dry out during the night. This is due to the sun’s gravitational effect as Thailand is close to the equator, ever wondered why the tide at the beach never seems to go out during the day?. In the middle months of summer the effects are reversed. Mr Tee a Thai friend took me on a night time squid fishing trip out of Bali Hai. I was keen to go as I am running out of bait. A lot was lost in the translation, for 300 Bht each five guys got onto a big longtail boat at 6pm and anchored up some 200 metres from Bali Hai dock. There we fished for squid, we caught two squid until a rain storm at 8pm chased us back to the beach. The idea was that we would fish for bait then use it, so much for filling my fridge with squid ! Nature was against me that night, not only a storm but algae turned the sea lime green, hard for the fish to see the bait / squid lure. Mr Tee said that we would return to the boat at about 10 pm for more fishing. I declined. I was totally knackered as I get up at 5 am everyday so I was ready for my pit! I later heard from Mr Tee that he got a 1 lb shark (the average size and only caught at night) and a 4 lb barracuda (bpla sak) now that I would have liked to have seen. As a thank you for the invite, I took Mr Tee around Koh Krok trolling for horse mackerel (bpla thoo) and queen fish (bpla salat). After picking fifteen odd fish, he said he wanted some red sand fish (bpla sia deang) to take home, so we went to the reef two kilometers south of Koh Krok. Catch of the day, small queen fish (they get as big as 6 kilos) nice size kee nok, and red sand fish. There is a “hole” just west of Koh Larn where the depth drops to 56 metres, according to the chart. I have been meaning to try drift and fish on the anchor. So I went out on a rising tide of 1.8 metres to see. In the deep water I like to use a sea anchor when I am bottom fishing on the drift. A sea anchor lessens the effect of the wind, making it easier to fish straight up and down. A bucket with a small concrete weight and four metres of rope attached to the prow of the boat works, if it is breezy I put another at the back. It not only slows the boat down but also keeps it square into the wind. I was able to hit bottom fifty five metres down with a fifty gram lead weight. Also I put out two big rods with live bait in the hope of a bigger fish. However all things did not work out, the deep hole turned out to be a gentle slope. Using my depth sounder I found out that it took one kilometer to drop thirty metres, so no big drop off, no rock or coral, just a smooth slope to a flat bottom. The other thing I found out is that the main shipping lane for traffic going to Rayong passes over the middle of the “hole”. So no anchoring up, I do not know if my five metre glass fibre boat will show up on the radar. I did pick up a lot of bottom fish, but no bite on the big rods, no surprise if there’s no coral, rock or kelp beds to hold bait fish. Scott’s guys have had a quiet time aboard Captain Deang’s boat, one trip only saw one two kilo Spanish mackerel come aboard. As usual if you want any info on tackle shops etc. or want to share your catch of the day photo’s, how you did or not. It’s plamafia5@aol.com or text 0808356945. Have fun, Roger

s l e e h W g n i k l Ta EXPLOSIVE SUPER CAR SHOWDOWN AT BIRA CIRCUIT Pattaya was in the spotlights as Thailand Super Series (TSS) rolled into Bira Circuit, the historic ‘home of motorsport’, for its penultimate round of the year and immediately lived up to all the hype that surrounded the visit, the drivers and teams delivering exactly what everyone has come to expect from the ‘New Era’ of Thai racing. After the first two rounds of the season had taken Thailand’s premier racing series to the brand new state-of-the-art racetrack in Buriram it was a very different test for the competitors for the third of the four rounds that make up the calendar this year. Short, tight, twisty and rapidly ageing, Bira International Circuit always tests man and machine to the very limits, it takes no prisoners or respects big reputations and that was the same story, emotions boiling over as TSS played out its explosive bumper programme in this historic 2.4-km long ‘cauldron of passion’. At the top of the motorsport pyramid at Bira Super Car Class 2-GTM and the category delivered two thrilling action packed races that had the fans on their feet and which, significantly, also had a huge impact on the top of the championship classification. In Saturday’s first race of the weekend reigning champion Voravud Bhirombhakdi bounced back from a thus far very difficult title defence to take his first win of the year while the win on Sunday went to Jack Lemvard who took his second victory of the year and made up for disappointment in the first race when he retired while seemingly on his course to a comfortable victory. In the Drivers’ championship battle Craig Corliss turned the tables on Kantasak Kusiri, the points classification leader going into this round. The highly experienced New Zealander ripped 13 points out of the Thai youngster’s advantage on Saturday to turn an 8-point deficit at the start of the race into a 5-point advantage overnight. Meanwhile in the second race the Ferrari driver made up for his torrid opening race to chip 3 points back from Craig and that leaves the pair split by just 2 points heading into the final event in Bangsaen later this month. It's set to be another nail biting race to the title and it will be even more drama laden as the season closer will feature a triple header for the first time ever.

MOTOR TRADER Away from the Super Cars and in the top ‘touring car’ category, Super 2000, there was a new name in the winners’ circle, Kantadhee Kusiri. That weekend was the culmination of nine days in which he turned from a youngster with a lot of future promise into one of Thailand’s top racing drivers, both domestically and internationally. That path to much wider recognition actually started the weekend before TSS arrived at Bira Circuit when he had raced for the first time in a single-seater at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps Circuit and instantly made the international paddock sit up and take notice. The job was completed the next weekend as Team Eakie finally got their new Toyota 86 right on song and Kantadhee went and demolished a highly touted Super 2000 field. In fact he smashed his way to two wins from two races, his first ever victories in the top touring car category. The ‘star of the future’ tag has been dumped in spectacular style; unquestionably, he’s now one of the big stars of TSS and his career is in the ascendancy. And in overall championship terms it was equally as nail biting. Vattana’s superstar Jack Lemvard came into the event seemingly on a cruise to the title but he collected just 10-points from the two races and Pasarit Phromsombat, who knows exactly how to wring every last point out of a race, put himself into the thick of the action at the business end of the leaderboard in both races and tore 17-points out of Jack’s advantage. The gap in the championship is down to just 10-points and all is now to play for on the streets of Bangsaen. In Super Class 3-GTC Grant Supaphong took two quite emphatic wins to swing what was a wide-open title fight firmly in his direction as he finally blended reliability with his trademark pace and the destiny of the championship is now in his hands. It’s his title to loose now. Behind him in both races there was frenetic activity for the runners up spot as Grant’s teammate Daychapon Toyingcharoen slugged it out with the fast developing Mazda RX-8 of Thanapol Thongchua. Very evenly matched they took a second and a third place apiece from the two races and with title hopeful Naputt Assakul struggling there is now an enthralling three-way fight in store for the runners up spot with just one round and two races remaining. Right across the programme there was plenty of action as all the support classes delivered explosive races to keep the spectators entertained from dawn to dusk. There was also the traditional middle of the day drifting demonstration by the Krating Daeng Racing Team led by Thai urban legend ‘Kiki’ Sak Nana as well as a surprise guest appearance by Vin Diesel. Well it was almost Vin, rather it was an incredibly lifelike waxworks dummy fresh from Madame Tussauds in Bangkok that made everyone double take, while ‘real life’ celebs in the paddock included leading Thai actresses Mai Sukhontrava and Airin Yoogthatat.

here’s been a new name lurking in the paddock at Pattaya’s Bira Circuit And no ordinary name either, in fact it was a driver with global recognition, Malaysia’s former Formula 1 superstar Alex Yoong.
His arrival at Bira Circuit actually joined up a few of the dots of history as Khun Alex became the first South East Asian driver to join F1 since Prince Bira himself raced with success in grands prix half a century earlier, when he debuted at Monza for the Minardi team during the Italian F1 Grand Prix in 2001. After a late season programme with the little team from Faenza he again drove for them throughout most of the following year before going on to pursue his career in international racing series including Champ Car, A1 Grand Prix, GP3 Asia Series and Porsche Carrera Cup. Today Alex is one of the best-known drivers in Asia and is currently embedded with Audi. He’s the reigning champion of Audi’s ‘R8 Cup’ pan-Asian ‘one make’ series and is leading the points standings thus far this year. That deep Audi connection doesn’t stop there, this year for example he led out the first ever all-Asian entry in the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours driving an Audi R8 LMS Cup and in fact the crew came home an impressive twelfth overall. So really there isn’t anyone who knows the car better or can get more out of it. The connection that brought him to Bira Circuit was pretty simple one too, Alex is a contracted Audi factory driver while B-Quik Racing is an Audi customer team, running the familiar ‘bumblebee’ black and yellow #26 Audi R8 LMS Cup in Thailand Super Series (TSS) for a second consecutive year driven by Henk Kiks. “Henk was up in Malaysia at Sepang at the Audi Cup round which I race in and I think he was talking to Audi and Absolute Racing abut sorting out the car and they asked me and [factory engineer] Ruben [Silva] if we wanted to come down,” explained Alex. “Of course we wanted to come down and have a go and I’m always very happy to help.” There were more dots joined up as B-Quik Racing this year is running a car in Audi’s ‘R8 Cup’ one make race series for the first time, which is also organised by Absolute Racing. Daniel Bilski, who is piloting B-Quik’s Porsche 997 GT3 Cup in Super Car Class 2-GTM this year, his debut season in TSS, is also driving the team’s debut entry in the Audi R8 Cup. Alex joined the team for two days just as they was bedding in a new suspension system. “For me mostly it’s just been working with the engineers to make sure what we need to have on the car is actually on the car, and try out a few little setup things with the new dampers which give the team more scope to have adjustments for the future and a lot more flexibility to adjust the car for the conditions and also a bit of driver coaching,” he said. For a driver that has raced pretty intensively across Asia over a long and successful career he hasn’t been on the grid at Bira Circuit before – although he did enjoy a few laps of the track more than twenty years

ago. “I’ve never raced here, I’ve only ever driven here once, I think in 1993 or 1994,” he says. “I can’t remember what car it was, I had come to have a look at a race and they let me go around for a few laps and to be honest I don’t remember anything of the track.” Google isn’t helpful about this brief visit either. However Alex, who has raced on most of the world’s leading racetracks, such as Silverstone, Indianapolis, Interlagos, Suzuka, Monaco and Long Beach, professed to have enjoyed the tight and twisty confines of Bira Circuit as his twoday test workload wound up on Thursday afternoon – although he admitted that he wasn’t pushing too hard and his priority was to take good care of the Audi.
“When I went round yesterday this track is quite interesting, it’s a very tricky track to drive it’s actually quite fun, there are nice elevation changes,” he said. “But it’s very unforgiving so we’ve been super careful because [if] you make a small mistake you can write off the car in the wall.” Alex also reckons that Audi’s R8 LMS Cup, which was originally built for ‘one make’ level racing, suits the demanding nature of Bira Circuit, which plays to its inherent strengths. “It’s very good, if you look at Audi’s history it’s very good, it always wins Macau, it does well at the Nürburgring and especially in the wet,” he says. “It’s the fastest GT3 car I’ve ever driven in the wet and that’s because this car produces a lot of mechanical grip, so for these sort of conditions when it’s very bumpy and a lot of undulations this car produces a lot of grip and I can go as fast as I want over the kerbs and it doesn’t really throw it.” Although this was just a short two day test session for Alex in his capacity as an Audi factory driver there is however the distinct possibility that in the future that he could well become the second former Formula 1 driver to race in TSS and that’s really a development which would be welcomed by the Pattaya’s many racing fans and it could really shake up the Super Car order.

What could be more “Hi So” than a day out on a Yacht? If you’ve ever thought that it was only a past time for the rich and famous think again. You can charter your own version of a rich and famous lifestyle right here in Pattaya and of course gather a few friends along and it becomes even more affordable. Silver Princess Yachts is the brain child of Sonny Souvannavong and has everything you could possibly need from a luxury Yacht charter company. They can even build a yacht from scratch if you really feel like pushing the boat out – sorry couldn’t resist! Or they have a 53 foot beauty built to Canadian design built to the highest standards of making and craftsmanship, to allow you to experience ownership for a few hours and day or a week as you please. Sonny’s experience as a pilot (he actually holds a commercial pilot’s license) means that he puts safety before pleasure to ensure that all necessary maintenance checks are not only carried out but rigorously logged. “After all” he says “I wouldn’t fly a plane without making sure all the proper procedures were carried out before take- off and likewise I’m not going to have my vessel out in the ocean without maintaining the same rigorous safety standards”. So it was my pleasure to spend a couple of hours aboard the beautiful Silver Princess and as we set off from Ocean Marina the first thing that struck me was just how smooth and steady it was. I have in the past been on a yacht off the coast of Spain and really suffered whilst in the choppy waters. Although the sea out from Pattaya was undeniably serene that day, Sonny explained to me that the Silver Princess is a “multi-hull catamaran” and therefore is more stabilized than a single hull vessel, making it far more steady in the water. Therefore you avoid the experience of everything flying around pitching off tables and chairs but instead enjoy a relaxing, soothing experience, go out on the sun deck to take the rays or just enjoy the fantastic views all around and the gentle breeze. Another interesting by product of the multi hull is that this allows for full displacement no “hydro planning” as we saw from a smaller boat to our aft (– see how I’m getting in to the whole nautical world!) which means less fuel consumption and therefore reduced costs – much greener too! The other thing that I immediately noticed was the quality of the fabric used on the seating and cushions Sonny explained that the cost of this alone, was 300,000 baht because of course it has to be resilient to rain damp and general wear and tear - no matter how steady the Silver Princess is in the water. At maximum capacity the yacht can take 50 passengers but generally groups of 20 or 30 have come aboard for trips such as:i 8 or 4 HOUR TRIPS – Island hopping around Pattaya Bay

Or specific destination journeys Koh Samet - usually departing around 10 a.m. from Ocean Marina arriving at the island at 4 pm Or Hua Hin - likewise a trip here would generally take approximately the same length of time They have even been the venue for WEDDINGS, BIRTHDAYS, and the filming of a music video shot on board. Charter as the name suggests means that you can do just that design your own trip take longer and combine it with hotel stays for your own personalised itinerary. This has been done by customers wanting to go to Koh Chang and even as 1 group did, use the boat for a whole week taking a couple of days out for shopping in Bangkok and then (because this is one of the few yachts that can fit under all the bridges in Bangkok) take the Silver Princess right up river to Ayutthaya. If you require the yacht to be berthed overnight the cost is 100,000 baht but general guidelines are that you should allow for a cost of 10,000 baht per hour the minimum charter cost being 50,000 baht. For that you can expect a Captain + 3 crew but of course if you require more for example waiting staff then this can be accommodated. In fact Sonny is very proud of what he is able to provide should catering be required as with a variety of differing nationalities: Indian, Chinese, Korean, Russian – to name a few, he has had many and varied requests as you can imagine. From traditional Thai fare to more exotic fresh seafood such a crabs, shrimps, clams and oysters which are bought fresh early in the morning and prepared before travel. The Sheraton Pattaya is a partner offering packages from the hotel and also catering for the more luxurious events. Basically just ask and Sonny will cost it out for you…….apparently he makes a mean Mohito too ! www.silver-princess.com email info@silver-princess.com phone: +669.1464.2065

Why are some people so generous to their bank manager?
If you live here on a monthly salary and most of that is eaten up by normal living expenses, then I’m afraid you have little choice but to use a local bank as a facilitator to your lifestyle. If you live here on a monthly salary and most of that is eaten up by normal living expenses, then I’m afraid you have little choice but to use a local bank as a facilitator to your lifestyle. What amazes me is the expat who has the craft to have opened an offshore bank account, before moving here, and is then content to leave their hard earned lifetime savings sitting there. Many of us of course need an offshore bank, to receive or make regular payments, either from investments or to pay for living expenses here. Some people have these living expenses paid directly to their Thai bank from their investments. These are usually people who have no other expenditure outside Thailand and who seldom travel abroad. In this article I try to understand the mentality of people who, say with a minimum cash lump sum of 100,000 Stg or US$ equivalent, are happy to leave it in the bank for pittance interest. I really believe that as most of these people are in their sixties and retired, they become afraid of the compli-

cated investment world and feel safer in the bank. It may be a cultural thing back home to respect the bank manager in his nice suit and Ford Mondeo; and if you had a large lump sum on deposit, you would have got respect from him which you never got when you were in debt to him and his organization. Many of the people I meet have had resentment for years with banks and that makes it doubly mystifying why on retirement, they leave their capital on deposit and let the banks make the big bucks with their money. I am well aware that this is an ever- decreasing group of people but among older expats there are still a substantial number who keep their offshore bank happy. I could understand this attitude if the banks were safer. The reality is that international offshore investments have much better consumer protection, confidentiality, tax relief and inheritance planning than offshore banks. Some of these of course have their own investment arm but most of them are tied to a limited menu and those that are not, will not really want to talk to you, unless you have a few million (and no I don’t mean baht). The probable cause of reluctance to move away from the banks is insecurity. Fear of the unknown. After all

when you mention offshore to many people, they immediately conjure up images of drug runners, arms dealers and even oil drillers.
eventually results in people advising to refuse all calls from financial advisors.
Some of the behavior of offshore brokers has driven many potential investors into the arms of the banks. Many brokers employ young enthusiastic employees who pester anyone whose name and phone number appears in a local Chamber of Commerce magazine with constant phone calls. These young guys believe they have found the way to a quick million, until burnout becomes a reality and they quit. Meanwhile, the broker has a few more young guys lined up which
The second biggest offence, by an unethical broker, after running off with your money, is to fit an investor up with a high commission product that is completely unsuitable for the unsophisticated investor. This behaviour is on the decline, as most of the brokers I know run perfectly ethical business and let’s face it, this behavior is not confined to here as most of the big scandals in the financial world over the past few years have been with the large International financial banks and brokerage houses. So how do you protect yourself and make the most of your offshore status? Firstly don’t be a bird-brain. It’s your responsibility to understand 100% any investment recommended to you. You really do understand your own needs. Remember, offshore investing encompasses everything from guaranteed deposits right through to speculative equity and hedge funds. Talk to a good broker and do nothing until you fully understand what you’re getting into. It would be a tragedy for any expatriate, no matter how much money they have, to settle for bank interest. Thinking Outside the Box: A note about international life
I
f you have ever visited Madam Tussaude’s Museum in Bangkok, you might have seen Angelina Jolie’s wax statue and the quote: “If you don’t get out of the box you've been raised in, you won’t understand how much bigger the world is”. Despite being born and raised in Los Angeles, even Angelina Jolie felt the confines of a “box” around her and the message is: get out of it. The thing is, most societies force these limits on the people; even the very open-minded ones. In Sweden they have an expression that says: “Den spik som sticker upp måste man hamra ner!” meaning the nail that sticks up must be hammered down. Well, I would say if you are not supposed to stick out and be different from others within your society, move abroad and be yourself there.
across before. The stories that your international friends share with you, open you up to a completely different way of viewing life in general and, you never know, these stories may make a lasting impact on the rest of your life. I am not saying there are no downsides to expat life. Being homesick is the worst of all. That’s why celebrating international days are important. Not only do you get to tell the people about your culture, but you also have the chance to do things the way they do at home; like baking a cookie from your country, making a piece of art, practise a little dance or even play a game. This is the day to embrace and celebrate the international life.
Jolie’s statement especially caught my attention because I have felt the same way ever since I left my country of origin. For me, the only way to get out of the box I was forced in was to move abroad. As it was my reason for moving, I thought this may have been the motivation for other international people. The experiences of international life are priceless. You get to meet lots of other risk takers who have left home, travelled most of their lives and seen most of the countries on this planet. You get to interact with interesting locals who have different perspectives about life and you get to consider and appreciate many different cultures that you have not come

No News Like Good News In the Fool in Paradise article [I’ll Drink to That!] back in September, I wrote that consuming alcohol is “not purely a human condition; there are plenty of other animals that like to party as well.” This statement was backed up by scientific studies. What I did not discuss was how much alcohol we humans consume and just how much of that is doing us harm. Many years ago – so many it is embarrassing – there was a flyer from the organisation Alcoholics Anonymous hidden amongst my junk mail. This group does a mountain of good work worldwide so please don’t think this article is being critical of the fine achievements they have made. On this particular day, however, instead of tossing the flyer in the garbage along with the usual junk mail, I actually sat down and read it. That was the bad news. The main thing I remember about it was the ten questions posed which were meant to be a guide in determining if someone could possibly have a drinking problem. Each question required a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer and, according to the introduction, if the answer to three or more questions was ‘yes’, then maybe there was potentially a cause for concern. Five minutes later, I had answered ‘yes’ to all ten. This was a stunning, dare I say ‘sobering’, revelation. I knew I drank ‘quite a bit’ but it had never been a problem. Like the old joke: “I don’t have a drinking problem. I drink. I get drunk. I go to sleep. No problem.” Most of the time I didn’t even get drunk; merely ‘tipsy’ or ‘light headed’. My first reaction was to dispute the questions. Some of them sounded silly to me. For instance, “Have you ever borrowed money to drink alcohol?” Of course I had. Sometimes at an unplanned meeting with friends I’d find myself financially embarrassed and ask a mate, “Can you lend me $10 until payday?” Another question was, “Have you ever lost your memory of events due to consuming alcohol?” Of course I had. I had been to parties and could not remember how or when I got home. At eleven o’clock I was having a great time and then the sun was shining and I woke up in my own bed. When we met up again, my friends delighted in telling me what a great time I had during the missing hours. This leads nicely into the third question which was something like, “Have you ever regretted something you’ve done while under the influence of alcohol?” Oh yes, many many times and let’s not open that can of worms. Then again, I regret a lot of things I’ve done when stone cold sober as well. But looking at all my friends at that time, I was certain all of them would have answered “yes” to at least those three questions. Surely we were not all alcoholics. I dismissed the flyer

as not applying to me and forgot all about it. Now, many years later, I finally read some good news. Medical researchers have come to my moral rescue by concluding I was not such a bad boy after all. According to a US study conducted over 20 years and reported in Time, “regular drinkers are less likely to die prematurely than people who have never indulged in alcohol.” The study of more than 1,800 people between the ages of 55 and 65, found that “mortality rates were highest for those who had never had a sip, lower for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers who enjoyed one to three drinks per day.” That’s me! One possible explanation put forward was that “alcohol can be a great social lubricant, and strong social networks are essential for maintaining mental and physical health.” As to why abstaining from alcohol may lead to a shorter life, perhaps teetotallers “don’t get the stress-reducing benefits of a drink or two after work.” This was good news because I really enjoyed a drink after work or at the end of the day. It began to feel like all those hours spent in bars over the years were not completely wasted. If that wasn’t enough to convince me, a Canadian study (carried out on rats) found that the health benefits from a glass of red wine are similar to those obtained from exercise. Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, “improved physical performance, heart function and muscle strength in the same way as they’re improved after a gym session.” I happen to have a psychological aversion to gyms and start to sweat and shake at even the thought of regimented exercise. However, I do enjoy a glass or two of red wine in the evening so my question is; why conduct the study on rats when there would be plenty of human subjects up to the task? Personally, I would happily volunteer to be a guinea pig as long as they supplied the wine. Even more good news has also emerged. Other studies “have revealed that those who drink a glass of red wine a day are less likely to develop dementia or cancer, that it’s good for your heart, antiageing and can regulate blood sugar.” Finally, to my utter joy, scientists are now promoting the benefits of my beverage of choice, beer. The latest news is that “an ingredient in beer hops, xanthohumol, could protect brain cells from damage and potentially slow the development of disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.” In lab tests scientists found that “xanthohumol could protect neuronal cells and potentially help slow the development of brain disorders.” Perfect. Even if some future study emerges debunking those results, I need no further convincing. Three or four pints of bitter plus a couple of glasses of dry red before going to bed and I am a happy camper.
