D

eputy Prime Minister Thanasak Patimapragorn released a statement on Thursday 20th October 2016 in which he said that Thailand still welcomes tourists to the Kingdom especially the health and culture sectors and he proposed that black ribbon pins would be available at airports to assist tourists in joining in with the rest of the country in mourning. The official statement from the government states that tourism will continue as usual although the authorities have asked for cooperation from business operators to refrain from entertainment activities like dancing and concerts for at least the first 30 days. The key message that is relayed on official news sites, is that tourists and expats should be prepared to be flexible, not just for the first 30 days but in the coming months. Many planned events and concerts have either been postponed or cancelled, so if you have intended to attend a function it would be wise to check first if it is in fact still taking place before you set off on your journey.Normal businesses such as banks, transport, hospitals and shopping malls are still operating as usual, but some tourist venues are closed and various activities have been canceled. For those expats who live in the kingdom and for any tourists visiting Thailand, here are a few tips that you should follow. Many Thais will be wearing black or white during the mourning period, although it is not compulsory for non-Thais it is advisable to wear somber clothing in public. Swimwear is still allowed on the beach, but not away from there and you should make sure you are dressing appropriately at all times. Together with dressing appropriately, it is advisable not to enter into any debate on politics or the Royal Family at this present time. Thailand's lese majeste laws should be observed at all times, even more so at the current time. So be careful what you post on your facebook page and comment flippantly in conversation. In respects to alcohol this is very much down to personal control, it should be said a little more moderation should be shown at this time, it certainly would not be acceptable to be drunk in public. If you have to have a skin-full then stay at home. There is a little confusion over bars and sales, some owners prefer not to sell alcohol at this time whilst others are governed by local officials and rules. If a bar remains open don't expect a party atmosphere or loud music, and be prepared that the opening hours may be curtailed. Here in Pattaya at time of going to press the Loy Kratong festival, Pattaya International Ladies Melbourne Cup Day,The International Fireworks festival and New Year celebrations have all been cancelled and Thailand's whole domestic football fixtures have been suspended until further notice. You can show and offer your sympathy to Thai people, this would not be disrespectful and would definitely be a positive thing to do . Also you should certainly be aware that if you are not behaving in an appropriate manner people may be offended and therefore it is best to act responsibly.. Recently Lt. General Sansern commented on the above and was quoted as saying, “Don't try to provoke any conflict at the moment and don't get the monarchy involved in any conflict. Now is the time for all of us to unite.

A list has been circulating for all expats and tourists to follow at the moment: • Dress appropriately at all times • Avoid gaudy or bright colours during the official mourning period • If possible wear black or white or somber clothing • Be flexible in your outlook with regards to cancellations and disruptions • Be respectful and mindful of the current situation at all times • Keep a low profile when in public • Do not contribute to loud or overt celebrations • Consider your alcohol consumption • Follow official information from authorities It should be remembered that after all we are all just guests in this wonderful Kingdom, at a time like this we need to be mindful of other people’s feelings .

Around Pattaya you will see many companies now placing shrines outside their buildings and if you are visiting Bangkok you may wish to view the work of the art students at Silpakorn University who have made their own particularly charming tribute with their portraits. www.pattayatrader.com

PATTAYA TRADER

Hi Readers Yes everyone at the Pattaya Trader would like to express their profound respect to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and extend our sincere condolences to the Thai people for their great loss. Whether long term expats or simply holiday tourists I think everyone visiting Thailand at this sad time has been struck by the outpourings of grief from the Thai People. We have all seen images of the people of Bangkok lining the streets dressed in sombre black and many exhibiting a touching, simple gesture by holding bank notes up to show King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s image.. As the Pattaya Trader for many years has been known for connecting Pattaya we hope that at this sad time Expats or Farangs as we are commonly known, will offer their sympathy and respect, and to that end we have given a few guidelines on how to dress and behave during this period. Also at time of going to press many events have been cancelled or modified so our advice is to double check before planning to attend and we will continue to update our website and facebook pages as soon as we are notified of any changes. he Rotary Club Phoenix Pattaya has just finished construction of their second combined children's playground/fitness equipment area for the new Drop In Center run by Human Help Network (HHN) near Third Road.

The Rotarians did not invent this combined playground/fitness area, the idea came from an American called “Woody” who has already built more than 30 of these playgrounds in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Nepal. The idea is that the playground can be used by children as young as toddlers who have only just started to walk whilst the fitness area can be enjoyed by even the elderly who might not be as mobile as they once were. The original concept has been to place this combined playground/fitness area in the center of the village or on temple grounds within easy reach of the whole community. Surrounded by weatherproof furniture, parents and grandparents can sit together to supervise their kids or can join in with the activities. From the simple use of the slide right up to a heavy set of pull ups everything is possible. Woody is available to instruct the community or school on the variety of possible exercises that can be done using the available equipment and there are even videos on youtube as well. The concept is flexible and depends on the available space and budget but generally will include equipment such as a slide, ropes, rings, swings, monkey trail etc.

“Become a Sponsor” The Rotarians will continue to build these “gyms” and are looking for joint ventures, So you may consider becoming a sponsor.: The budget for a play ground depends on the size of the area and the material used but on average costs in the region of 5485 000 Baht. Individuals who like this idea and/or want to contribute can contact the Rotary Club by email . info@rotary-phoenix-pattaya.org The Rotarians can build the gym and either subsidise or completely pay for it. So if you know of a school, kindergarten or local community that might be interested in such a project and has the available space you can again email:

hilst most visitors come to the Land of Smiles to lay on pristine white beaches and enjoy the incredible food and culture, there are others who visit Thailand for a completely different reason.Thailand is famous for all its diverse tourist activities and places to see, and yet there is another very valid reason to visit exotic Siam. And that is to purchase the amazing products that are produced from quality craftsmen, often made by old traditional methods.

Silk is probably the best known commodity and Thai silk is famed throughout the world. In the past few decades the Thai silk industry has gone through something of a remarkable renaissance after nearly dying out in the late 60's. Thai silk is of extraordinary quality and some of the designs and types cannot be found anywhere else on the globe. Such as the luxurious Ikat silk from the northeast, which is formed using a unique tie-dying technique. Most of Thai silk is produced from the cocoons of Thai silkworms and the weavers of the Khorat Plateau feed their caterpillars on a diet of mulberry leaves. If you are crazy about silk then Khorat is the place to visit as it is the center of the silk industry in Thailand, famed for its Rose Thai Silk that has been produced there for generations. Look for the Peacock Emblem that Thailand's Agriculture Ministry uses to authenticate Thai silk to be guaranteed its quality and origin.

Precious stones, gems and jewelry, is one of the key industries that has flourished since ancient Siam and before. The Kingdom is well endowed with gemstone resources as well as many gifted artisans and craftsmen For many centuries Chanthaburi and the surrounding areas have been producing rubies and sapphires mined from the Thai-Cambodian border region, with mines lying both sides of the border. The deep red rubies discovered in Chanthaburi are known as Tab Tim Siam or Siamese Rubies and are so collectable they are sought after all over the world for their dazzling pure red colour and almost magical appearance. The Thailand jewelry industry has developed from home enterprise to a large scale export trade and the sector has become one of Thailand's top-ten foreign exchange earners.

Paper and Silk Umbrellas are another specialty of northern Thailand, the art of manufacturing the umbrellas and fans from waxed paper or wonderful painted silk is in fact hundred of years old.The remote villages of San Kamphaeng and Bor Sand just outside Chiang Mai are dedicated to this old tradition and craft. The basic frames are usually bamboo and tied together with either cotton or silk thread. The frames are then covered with the waxy paper or fabric, then the elaborate and colourful artwork is added to bring unique designs and combination of colours. Since ancient times and still today, umbrellas and fans are used in many ceremonial traditions around the country, which highlights the Thai reverence for this most exceptional handmade item.

Wood engravings, and carvings of all shapes and sizes are prevalent in northern Thailand where you can find entire communities and villages transforming wooden logs into beautiful decorative items. At the center of the industry is San Patong where there are row after row of carpenters shops, lining up to transform the wood into something quite spectacular. A little further south the two villages of Ban Tawai and Ban Wan are also both heavily involved in the art of wood transformation.

These craftsmen produce almost anything from religious deities, temple dancers and highly decorative wall panels that adorn the most prestigious of walls. Usually the wooden carvings are to be found embellishing many religious temples, but also can be found in royal buildings and on regal boats. Fine examples of this work can be seen in Pattaya's own Sanctuary of Truth, which is a must- see experience if you have yet to visit.

Silvercraft and northern Thai silver is among the most famous in the Kingdom, but the methods and styles do vary greatly from the central and southern Thai silver wares. Northern Thai silver origins date back to 14th century as a result of the Burmese and Shan silver production a hundred years earlier.Hundreds of Burmese silversmiths arrived in the new capital of Lanna, Chaing Mai. The Shan tribes also very adept at silver-work plied their trade in the region, thus forming the now famous Chaing Mai silverware. The tradition of silver work in both Sukhothai and Lanna developed quickly and by the time the Thai Ayutthaya Kingdom of the 15th century came, an established industry was prevalent with fantastic combinations of designs and techniques.Still today, the regions around Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai are producing some excellent silvercraft, with traditional and a little more modern design to whet your appetite.

Ceramics of all types, shapes and sizes are yet another old and yet time-honoured speciality of Thailand. Way back to the middle ages, Celadon ceramics were one of the main and highly priced trading goods of Siam. The small village of Dan Kwiang in the northeast was fortunate to have a very special clay that could only be found there. And this clay, with a high content of iron oxide, gave rise to ceramics with a unique reddish sheen. The ceramic products made in and around Dan Kwiang are some of the most sought after in the world and are in great demand. It is in the north of the country that the ceramics industry is centered, producing a wide range of goods both for domestic use and export. Thailand has so much more to offer than sea, sand and leisure. Its craft products are indeed highly sought after. Hardly surprising when you consider the quality of the raw materials and craftsmanship. So the next time you have the opportunity take a trip up to Khorat to see the silk, or San Patong to purchase some fine wood carvings, it will be a change from the normal sightseeing and you might unearth a gem or two in Chanthaburi.

At time of going to press this festival has been cancelled apart from the Chiang Mai area where the cancellation of Loy Krathong has been repealed although there is to be no entertainment. (Ed) Sukhothai was the first place where a Krathong was set afloat, whilst in Chiang Mai it is now a huge festival and sometimes lasts the whole week with the inclusion of the celebration of Yi Peng. In numerous locations around Bangkok and Chiang Mai there has been a recent banning of Khon's (lanterns). This ban has gone a stage further adding firework and even alcohol restrictions. It is not a case of Bah Humbug that you might expect from the Health & Safety wallahs, but for legitimate reasons. In areas with busy flight paths overhead it makes perfect sense and for those places that have legitimate fire concerns, it is much better being safe than sorry. - For those of you that have experienced dripping hot oil, splattering down from fragile fire lanterns above, you will be aware how dangerous these things can be. Loy Krathong traces its origins to the Indian Hindu festival of Diwali which was a thanksgiving to the River Ganges. However in Thailand the Buddhists adapted the festival to honour Lord Buddhan with the Krathong originally being floated on the water as a sign of respect. However as in many cases of festivals and their origins, things are a tad blurred. The raft has also been designated as a symbol that carries away all the sins and grievances of the person who sets it afloat. Many people attach personal items such as hair, fingernails or tokens as a detachment from their formal self. Another purpose of the raft has been cited as a way to give thanks to Phra Mae Khongkha, the Goddess of Water, this too is meant to bring good luck and fortune. In Chiang Mai and some other areas during the celebration period, a Beauty Contest is held. They are known as Noppamas Queen Contests, as the legend tells the story of Nang Nopamas who was known as the royal consort of King Ramkhamhaeng (the founder of Sukthothai). Apparently she was the first person to actually float a Krathong, and decorated it so beautifully that when it floated passed the king he was in awe. The episode gave rise to a belief that if two lovers float a Krathong on water and it continues to float for as long as it can be seen, then the love between them should last for ever. For me the romantic tales of such historic institutions with arguable origins are always the best. They tend to last forever, and this day and age a little bit of romantic fantasy is not a bad thing. If nothing else Loy Krathong brings joy and happiness to people’s lives, it gives them a chance to hope, dream and think on things that might be. Wherever you decide to celebrate, embrace the occasion and just for a moment or two reflect on the good things that are yet to come.

f you were to ask somebody in London or New York to name an authentic Thai dish they probably would utter Tom Yam or Green Curry, the same could probably be said of some expats living in Pattaya or Phuket. However, whilst those two dishes do appear on many menus in Thailand, they do not truly represent the diverse range of the country's epic culinary cuisine. Thailand, geographically speaking is a very diverse country, and many Thais generally divide it into four distinct regions. The Central region is largely dominated by the Chao Phraya River and its delta with its rich and fertile soil, whereas Southern Thailand is a thin peninsula with the Andaman Sea on one side and the Gulf of Thailand on the other. Further North the terrain is mountainous and the climate cool, while the Northeast Plateau is a vast area flanked by the Mekong river. Each of the four areas has its own distinct ethnic peoples, dialects, customs and cuisines. Therefore you can expect to have very regional variances in the types of food you will be offered as you travel around. Bangkok is the heart of the Central Region and boasts the finest rice in the country, notably hom mali and jasmine. The three curries famous from this region are Kaeng Khieo Wan (the familiar green curry) normally with poultry or fish, Kaeng Phet which is a spicy hot curry and Kaeng Phanaeng a little milder, all three are based on coconut milk.

TITLE KHIEO WAN - GREEN CURRY

Tom Yam another famous dish also originates from the Central Region, as do the tangy and spicy salads popular in Thailand. Most meals in this area will include an omelet of some kind, either plainly served with a spicy chilli dip, or perhaps stuffed with ground pork, tomato and onion called Khai Yat Sai. The food of the Central Region is heavily influenced by Chinese techniques and ingredients such as tofu, ground pork, squashes and noodle dishes as Kuay Tiaw. A famous dish of the region is Nam Prik which is a fiery, pungent chilli dip served with fresh vegetables which are in season; cucumber, morning glory, makok leaves, cha-om and gratin.

TITLE NAM PRIK - CHILLI DIP

Southwest of Bangkok is Phetchaburi, where you will find Khanom Maw Kaeng a sweet baked custard. There are many variations but all based on mung bean, egg and coconut milk. The North Region has a cooler climate and therefore a larger selection of vegetables are used along with roots and herbs. The most common flavours are sour and bitter especially prevalent in the soups such as Kaeng Ho made with pickled bamboo shoot. Myanmar and Laos have strongly influence the cuisine here, favouring glutinous rice rolled into balls in the hand and then dipped into dips and sauces. The highly original Somtam, which is a spiced green papaya salad is also popular here.

TITLE SOMTAM - PAPAYA SALAD

Originating in Myanmar comes Khao Soi, which is a sort of curry broth with egg noodles and chicken or beef. And Kaeng Hang Lay which is a pork curry seasoned with ginger, tamarind and tumeric, the curries of the region are thinner with the two most popular being Kaeng Yuak, made from banana palm hearts, and Kaeng Khanoon with aromatic jackfruit. Sausages are a favourite in the North Region with Sai Ua being the most famous, filled with pork, dried chillies, garlic, shallots and lemongrass. One of the more unusual sausages is Naem Maw, mixed in a clay pot containing ground pork, pork rind, sticky rice, garlic and chilli. The sausage is fermented and is eaten raw giving a highly strong and sour taste. In the Northeast methods of cooking favour roasting and grilling and the cuisine has strong, bold flavours utilising herbs and pickles. Somtam is also very popular here with the addition of dried shrimp and cherry tomatoes, some variations use pickled field crab which make the dish highly salty.Kai Yang or grilled chicken is an Isan special, where the preparation of the meat in garlic, coriander root, black pepper and fish sauce is essential before it is slowly cooked over hot charcoal.

TITLE KAI YANG - GRILLED CHICKEN

Lap or Laab is a sort of salad using ground pork, beef, poultry or freshwater fish together with fresh mint, spring onions, dried chillies and uncooked ground rice. Often this dish is very spicy and cuts of offal and rind may be supplemented to the dish.An Isan meal will normally include a spicy soup sometimes made out of tripe or offal, flavoured deeply with tamarind. The hotpot known as Chaew Hawn is prevalent everywhere, where an individual heated pot is delivered to the table and ingredients are cooked either in the boiling broth or fried on a metal cone.

Southern cuisine is based on being hot and spicy, reflected in a typical dish called Kaeng Tai Pla an extremely hot curry made with fish stomach, green beans, pickled bamboo and potato. The Southern Region has many Malaysian, Javanese and Indian influences and curries are a favourite staple popular with fish, lobsters, crabs, mussels, squid and scallops thickened with coconut, nuts and pineapple. Southern people love their food chilli hot with a bitter taste imparted by a native flat bean called Sataw. There is also an extensive use of turmeric in many of the regions dishes making them yellow in colour, Gaeng Lueng a spicy coconut soup and Khao Mok Gai, chicken in turmeric are fine examples of this. Massaman is another uniquely flavoured curry featuring, galangal, lemongrass, coriander root, kaffir lime leaves and shrimp paste and unusually for Thai cuisine the addition of five-spice powder. Locals would customarily add roasted peanuts to their Massaman curry as a garnish which often occurs in other dishes.

TITLE MASSAMAN CURRY The four culinary regions of Thailand offer a cornucopia of different tastes and experiences and the local dishes differ immensely not just by region but by town. Every place you visit seems to have their own special version of a regional favourite, slightly enhanced by a mystery ingredient or two or prepared and cooked in a different manner.Next time you are perusing a Thai menu, take time out to study, if they are offering something different, why not choose a variation of your normal selection. You never know, you might be pleasantly surprised.

O

ne of the most anticipated Rugby League sporting occasions is due to hit the shores of the UK this October and November. The 2016 Four Nations Tournament kicks off on Friday 28th of October when Australia play Scotland at the Lightstream Stadium in Kingston-upon-Hull.The four teams that come together to compete, are the host nation England, the current World Cup champions Australia, the number one ranked team in the world New Zealand and massive underdogs Scotland. The tournament is guaranteed to be an action packed, rough and tumble affair that attracts not just supporters from the sport but also from further afield, desperate to catch some of the best players in the world in action.

The tournament has also attracted a new sponsor, as UK bookmaker Ladbrokes has signed a deal with England's Rugby Football League for the exclusive rights. The tournament will also be screened live on TV, radio and online around the world. The former Tri-Nation tournament of England, New Zealand and Australia being extended to offer a place to one qualifying nation. The whole spectacle takes place over five weeks and will include a double header and the final at Anfield, the home of Premier League football club Liverpool. On Friday the 28th of October the opening matches will feature Australia taking on Scotland at the Lightstream Stadium in Hull, whilst England will battle against New Zealand in Huddersfield. Last year saw England batter the Kiwis to win the Baskerville Shield. This year the Ricoh Arena Coventry will host a doubleheader on Saturday the 5th November when there are bound to be fireworks when England go head to head against Scotland, while the southern hemisphere goes to war when New Zealand play Australia. The final week of group games are in Workington on Friday the 11th of November, New Zealand versus Scotland while England face off against the Aussies at the London Stadium on Sunday the 13th of November. Then on Sunday the 20th of November the tournament final will be contested at Anfield, normally a cauldron for soccer. The 2016 tournament is highly expected to be one of the closest ever with the big three nations building momentum in their warm up games. England, who are now coached by Aussie Wayne Bennett, have never won the Four Nations and will be desperate to rectify this on home soil, the nearest they have come is losing to Australia twice in the final. The holders of the coveted trophy New Zealand have won two titles, the same as Australia, since 2009 when the Tri-Nations was expanded to the Four Nations.

Hull – Lightstream Stadium

SPORT & LEISURE

THE STADIUMS

The Lightstream Stadium last hosted an International Rugby match during the 2013 World Cup when it hosted Papua New Guinea's matches against France and Samoa.

Kingston upon Hull is a rugby mad city with two teams FC and Rovers flying the flag for League. As well as smaller clubs like East Hull, Lambwath Lions and Skirlaugh who offer younger players the chance to develop and achieve.

Huddersfield – John Smith's Stadium

Moldgreen, St Joseph's, Newsome Panthers and Lindley Swifts.

Huddersfield is the long respected birthplace of Rugby League and the venue for England's first game. England last won here against Ireland in 2013 in a whitewash of 42-0 in a packed arena.Local clubs playing League around Huddersfield are

Coventry – Ricoh Arena

The Ricoh arena has never hosted International Rugby League before. It is the home of Rugby Union team Wasps and Coventry City FC. There will be a double header played at the Ricoh with all four teams competing. The expectation is that a sell out crowd is expected.

Workington – Zebra Claims Stadium Another Rugby League crazy town with the Zebra Claims stadium opening in 1956 to be the home of Workington Town RLFC and the Comets speedway team. The fans are among the most fanatical in the sport and since Cumbria has not seen international Rugby since 2013 they will be queuing around the block when the Scots come down to play New Zealand.

London – The London Olympic Stadium

Now the home of West Ham United the stadium has held international Rugby before in 2015 when England played New Zealand. Rugby League has never really flourished in London or for that matter southern England in the past, but local teams like Newham Dockers, Brixton Bulls and the London Chargers are hoping to reverse that trend.

Liverpool – Anfield Home of the world famous Kop, Anfield is of course where Liverpool Football Club play. It was built in 1884 and originally home to LFC's arch rivals and senior club Everton. There has recently been a new addition to the Main Stand which has increased the capacity of Anfield to 54,000. Anfield does have a Rugby League history with St Helens taking on Castleford Tigers in 1997 and Wigan playing Penrith in the World Club Series back in 1991. Although it must be said that Liverpool is mostly a soccer mad city. The Four Nations Tournament will be a superb spectacle for the whole family to enjoy, and with 50% of the tickets being priced at under twenty five pounds it is also affordable for the whole family. The tournament is also never far away from controversy and this time it is Australia who seem to be grabbing the headlines. Two of their top players, Andrew Fifita and Semi Radradra have been withdrawn from the squad for completely different reasons. Fifita for allegedly having some form of relationship with “one punch” killer Kieran Loveridge and Radradra is facing domestic violence charges. So the million dollar question is who will win the 2016 Four Nations tournament? Although home advantage will be to England's favour and current holders Australia will be a tough nut to crack, I cannot see past New Zealand to win the tournament. This means no disrespect to Scotland, but they are really up against three of Rugby League's powerhouses and in fine form.

September 2016 PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Hot Golf From the Newbies

A

nother day dawned and golfers, old and new descended en masse on the recently renovated & reopened Ocean course at Phoenix Gold for the September PAGS tournament. The field of 105 players including 12 Ladies had an eye on the weather conditions, as it was raining in some parts of Pattaya early and the forecast was for a storm later in the day. Following some recent rain, and some tight lies on the fairways, the decision was made to have preferred lies through the green, to help avoid the dreaded mud ball. The rain held off, but it was hot and steamy out there, particularly early before the breeze got up. Cameron Imber (2) shot the undoubted round of the day, winning the Low Gross with a fine 70, that’s 2 under, for the arithmetically challenged. He also picked up 3rd spot in the A Flight nett, along with 2 bonus technical prizes, obviously can play a bit. Another headlining score of the day went to the Ladies winner, Orn Kansaengsri (15) with an outstanding 43 points, while the Ladies minor placing went to Chutikan (32) with a fine 42 points. B flight for handicaps 15 – 20, was a hotly contested affair with Werner Schwarz (17) on 39 points edging Mikael Andersson (15) with 38 points, who also picked up the long putt on hole 4. The bronze medal position in this flight going to John Fenwick (18) with a creditable 35 points, to go with his long putt on hole 11. In the C flight for handicaps 21 & up, it was Jon Markland (28) getting the chocolates with a solid 40 points, while Mike Chitwood (34) was 2 points behind on 38, with Gerry Graham (28) a further 4 points behind in 3rd spot with 34 points. Andrew Woodall (14) was the winner in A flight, while it was Tom Thompson (14) with 40 points who edged Low Gross winner Cameron on countback 21/20 getting the 2nd spot on the podium. This month I will throw out a few honorable mentions, to Warren Wood, Jerry Sweetnam, Jonny Lindberg, and Chop, who each picked up at least the maximum 2 technical prizes, well done to all. Just a quick shout out to Mark, who augmented his MC duties with a round of golf, onward and upward Mark. The Annual Order of Merit race is starting to really take some shape, plenty of players knocking on the door, as the year draws to a close, with 3 rounds left, it is still anybody’s to win. Check on www.Birdie.in.th for any results that you may have missed. It was welcome back to Dave, and his team who once again did a tip top job in the tucker department, with plenty of non golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening with their golfing partners, family & friends. As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from the Lion Pub after a PAGS presentation. I look forward to next month’s event at Phoenix on 25 October, as I am sure all of you who have experienced the PAGS organisation and hospitality do. he Dick Pope Legacy Awards recognizes leaders that have strengthened the sustainability of Florida’s hospitality and tourism industries and they are celebrated at the Grand Tour Foundation’s annual luncheon. This year the luncheon is to be held at the Wyndham resort on the 4th of November and the foundation is due to recognize Arnold Palmer as a 2016 honoree. Regrettably this will now be a posthumous award as the golfing legend recently died on the 25th of September just 15 days after his 87th birthday. Palmer as an American golfer is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in the sport's history. As a professional he won 92 national and international championships, 62 of them on the PGA Tour, and seven majors led by four green jackets from The Masters.

Nicknamed "The King", he was one of golf's most popular stars and an important trailblazer, His social impact was unrivaled among his fellow professionals because of his humble background and plainspoken popularity which helped change the perception of golf as an elite, upper-class pastime to a more populist sport accessible to middle and working classes. Since his move to Central Florida in the late 1960’s he successfully developed several business enterprises that helped sustain tourism and economic impact through sports initiatives. In 1969 he purchased Bay Hill Club & Lodge, the host course of Orlando’s premier annual PGA Tour event and The Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard was just one of his worldwide licensing and endorsements events. He co-founded TV’s Golf Channel in 1995 and has made a truly meaningful contribution with the Arnold Palmer Medical Center comprising The Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies. His reputation therefore as one of the best sportsmen and businessmen in the world for nearly half a century means that Palmer’s lasting impact on the Central Florida community will be honored when he is immortalized on the walls of the Orange County Convention Center. His bronze likeness will appear on the Dick Pope Hall of Fame when a representative of Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation will speak on Mr Palmer’s behalf- “It gives us great pleasure to have Mr. Palmer recognized for his significant impact on Florida’s golf industry and our community. Dick Pope is well-known. for his commitment to community works and philanthropy and it is an honor for Mr. Palmer to be acknowledged and celebrated with an award that bears Mr. Pope’s name.” Due to be served as the luncheon is a drink of iced tea with lemonade an “Arnold Palmer” named after the great American golfer. It has also been reported that shortly after the spreading of the great man’s ashes at his hometown Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania during a private service attended by family and close friends. A rainbow appeared over his statue. ………………………Arnold Palmer gone but certainly not forgotten.

Two days later I took John fishing, we went trolling around Koh Krok. As the tide was still rising we went to the south end and no sooner were the lines out when we both had horse mackerel on. John had the same rig as me 6lb braid with 6lb fluorocarbon and a thin strip of squid. Most of the hits and fish hooked were over the southern point and the small queen fish were on the south-east side of Koh Krok. As the tide slackened off I moved the boat very close to the rocks (6 feet or 2 metres) and trolled there. Eventually the tide stopped and we motored around to the north end of Koh Krok were the bite was on but not as good as before. We had left Naban at 7am and got back at 11am with 18 horse mackerel and 10 small queen fish. The mackerel are back in Town!

H

i Folks, what a summer it’s been, the temperature has gone down to its usual numbers but the storms have been rolling in wiping out the fishing for a week solid at a time. I had a run out to the reef south of Koh Krok the Hin Pra Nang. Using my light bottom rod a 2-6lb ugly stick with 6lb braid and end tackle of three hooks, one below the weight on 12 lb fluorocarbon. I picked up some forty seven fish in three hours. Unusually I got forty one Russell snappers and six different types of reef fish. The bite was on when I got there just as the tide started to drop, so I was on the north end of the reef. Twice I had a full house, three Russells on three hooks and six doubles. When the Russells shoal comes by you have to be quick, as after ten or twenty minutes the show is over, till they swim by again. In fact if it wasn’t for the Russells I would have had a crap trip.

Alas, three trips later and the mackerel had disappeared, those fishing gods just love to muck you about. Just as I took John out to the Hin Pra Nang looking for reef fish namely Russell snappers with the tide just starting to drop I knew just where to go, the northeast side of the main head. We drift fished, then anchored and went back to drift fishing as the bite never really happened. Three hours and John took home a bucket full of reef fish but not the numbers I was expecting. That’s fishing for you. Have fun Roger

Joy of joys, I was in the market by the Colosseum on Thepprasit when I saw some grey squid for sale. They looked robust, not the usual flat bodied that comes with being squashed in trays. At 90 Baht a kilo I just had to buy some. Cleaning the squid was messy and smelly, but the flesh was rubbery, perfect for staying on the hook. I knew it would be good bait for bottom fishing and the acid test was trolling for snipe which was successful. Bingo! So now I have about 24 kgs of cleaned squid in the freezer ready for the winter season. Frank and I went out to Koh Hoo Chang, just south of Koh Pia on a dropping tide. We were rigged up for big snipe, 6lb braid and 8lb fluorocarbon. On arriving we saw birds working in the shallows close to the island, that meant horse mackerel (bpla Thoo). So I motored up and we started trolling and in an instant we both had fish on. Two 11 inch horse mackerel weighing just shy of a pound apiece. In the next hour we had four more and no sign of the snipe. So we changed from the north east side to the south end of the island and then we got into the snipe. It turned out to be a quiet bite, and we went home with some fifteen fish weighing 20 pounds. However the big plus of the day was the horse mackerel bite, we were getting them throughout the day. Time to try trolling at Koh Krok.

T

hailand Super Series rolled into Pattaya mid last month for its annual visit here and the penultimate round of the season for the biggest motorsport championship. As usual many city residents made the short trek across to Bira Circuit to see the action unfolding over a long, very hot and dry weekend – and they weren’t disappointed a bit. At the top of the Thai racing tree is Super Car GTM and there was huge anticipation as the biggest beasts came to Pattaya as since last year the championship has grown further with exciting new drivers and new cars signing up. The action out on the track really sizzled but try as everyone might – and his rivals pushed him hard over every single lap – the driver who has taken a firm grip of Super Car this year, Sarun Sereethoranakul, relentlessly continued his strategy of chasing his first title from the front.

40

Following a stunning qualifying performance Sarun claimed two superb and well judged victories in the races after turning in two inch perfect drives as the dramatic Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo LP620-2 proved just as adept around tight and twisty Bira Circuit as it had on the long power straights and fast flowing corners of Buriram earlier in the season. He dominated the weekend when others had been expected to take centre stage and in just 72 hours, Sarun, in only his third year competing in Super Car, went from being one of the fastest rising stars of Thai motorsport to one of our genuine top names, joining a handful of our best drivers that are guaranteed winning material. If you can win at Bira you can win anywhere. It was job superbly done

and easily the best drive of his career so far. Singha Motorsport Team Thailand was back with a bang at Bira Circuit. The Ferrari 458 Challenge doesn’t suit the characteristics of Buriram too well and they generally had a pretty torrid time in the North East. But unleash the Prancing Horse cars around Bira and they’re immediately a force to be reckoned with. They led the practice sessions, missed pole by a few fractions and proceeded to chase the Lamborghini to the finishl ine in both races. A pair of 2-3 finishes for Pattaya’s top driver Kantasak Kusiri and the highly experienced Voravud Bhirombhakdi bounced the team right into contention in the Teams’ championship and come the season closer in Bangsaen in November they are very well placed to nab the title. There were many giant killing performances throughout the field. The Porsche 991 GT3 Cup suited Bira Circuit well and that unleashed Aekarat Discharoen and Pitsanu Sirimongkolkasem who thus far haven’t enjoyed a particularly productive season. These two proven quantities were in the hunt for the podium positions in both races and their dueling provided nonstop standout action. Both enjoyed well-deserved trips to the rostrum. B-Quik Racing’s Daniel Bilski provided one of the comeback drives of the round while in Race 2 he fought his way onto the podium to get a decent reward for his efforts. The factory Toyotas though had a terrible time, a reversal of their dominant form during the last round in Buriram.

Issue 192 | OCTOBER 2016

MOTOR TRADER

That was the story in Super Car GTM, but the blistering action didn’t stop there. Vattana Motorsport enjoyed a superb clean sweep in two of the standout categories on the bumper programme – Super Car GTC and TCR Thailand. The team racked up 1-2 finishes in both races in both championships with Narasak Ittiritpong and Jack Lemvard doubling up on driving duties. While Narasak wrapped up the GTC title with one round and two races still remaining Jack edged his way into the lead of the TCR Thailand championship classification. With drivers of this caliber on the roster plus state of the art racing new machinery under them, Vattana Motorsport wasn’t taking any prisoners – or leaving anything to chance. In Super Car GTC Narasak arrived in Pattaya with a double win behind him at the last round and three out of four wins for the season, all behind the wheel of the sensational new KTM X-Bow GT4. Vattana Motorsport’s aim was very simple, a double win should be enough seal the title while they also drafted their second and thus so far idle KTM in at the last minute to provide support with Jack penciled in to drive. The result was a foregone conclusion as the two KTMs led proceedings from the start winning both races 1-2. Such was their dominant form that Narasak won the first race on three wheels having suffered a rapidly deflating tyre halfway round the last lap. In TCR Thailand it was very much the same story as the same drivers, Narasak and Jack swapped mounts and again won 1-2, this time the advantage went to the latter – but that really didn’t tell the whole story at all. Two exciting and utterly close fought races saw Singha Motorsport Team Thailand’s Carlo Van Dam very unlucky not to walk away with a win. However that double victory and maximum points for Jack has really ignited the Drivers’ championship and he will go into the season closer at Bangsaen in two month’s time separated by just 3 points from the Dutch professional driver and all to play for. Bira always dishes up a thriller and certainly this year was no different, the fans were treated to a weekend of spectacular drama occurring on almost every lap. Now it’s onto the season finale on the streets of Bangsaen next month and so expect to see many Pattaya race fans making the short trip northwards to watch the action unfolding.

In many previous articles, I have mentioned the rollercoaster ride that motorsport can be, that analogy has never been truer than now when describing the last two events for TR Motorsport! In many previous articles, I have mentioned the rollercoaster ride that motorsport can be, that analogy has never been truer than now when describing the last two events for TR Motorsport!

The ‘Blue Blur’ with the ‘Danish Dynamo’ at the helm began the qualifying session, however, after only one lap Thomas radioed the pit wall to say there was an issue with the engine,

Chang International Circuit in Buriram, The penultimate endurance race of the season was held at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, regular followers will remember our previous race and the handicaps we faced due to our ‘mini' fuel tank compared to the other cars’. As soon as the team returned from Buriram work began on the car. including the installation of a new 95 Litre fuel tank, brand new engine and a new clutch with a super light flywheel. The FIA certified fuel tank was installed and checked and it quickly became apparent that it did not hold 95 litres, the capacity was well short at only 75 litres, and to make matters worse the new clutch system required a unique clutch bearing for it to work, after several failed R & D attempts the mechanics fashioned a system. For the event in Buriram, we had some extra team members join us, this proved essential as the weekend played out…. The problems began as early as the first practice session when 3rd Gear decided it would prefer not to hang around with its fellow gears and jump out at every opportunity possible! Back at the pits, the gearbox was taken apart and it was discovered that the custom clutch bearing seemed to be the culprit so this was quickly repaired in time for qualifying. Even with these issues, Thomas set a practice time 2 seconds faster than the previous fastest time in Round 1.

as it was down on power. With only one lap completed Thomas still managed to take provisional pole. After investigating the engine back at the pits no issue could be found so Thomas went back out to consolidate his position but again the engine issues started and quickly became worse. With pole position seemingly secured it was safer to bring the car in early and try to save the engine for the race. As the chequered flag dropped to end the session Toyota Team Thailand was still on a flying lap and beat TR Motorsport to pole by just 0.1 seconds, meaning Thomas and Tony would start in second but importantly on the front row.

as Thomas took the reins once more. Thomas was pushing hard but, while coming into turn 4 the gearbox said: "I've had enough, and I shouldn't be working on a Sunday" causing a massive lock up and resulting in oil and smoke billowing from the car. Due to the gearbox being so selfish, a piston rod in the well-behaved engine gave up all hope and decided to end it all by propelling itself through the engine block and that was that. The despondent team then set about packing away with not many words being spoken to each other as the horrific weekend was reflected upon. Although it had been a disaster other results had gone in their favour meaning that the team still have an outside chance of claiming the championship in Round 3 at the Bang Saen Street Race Friday 25th November.

Thailand Super Series – Bira The evening was spent running full diagnostics on the troublesome engine and it was found that the injector for cylinder 3 was failing intermittently and causing the loss of power. A completely new set of injectors was installed and the engine re-tuned remotely from Bangkok. As the race began it was apparent that the engine was still losing a drastic amount of power resulting in Thomas falling back to 12th in just one lap, so another trip to the pits beckoned. Unbelievably it was found that one of the new injectors had failed! With no replacements left in stock, the mechanics begged and borrowed from another team, however, as the injectors were a different specification they would need re-tuning remotely again. The tuner in Bangkok was not available for at least 20 mins so the team took the decision to go back on track albeit driving at a lower RPM. After 20 minutes the car was back in the pits having the new tuning program installed. After the all clear was given it was time for co-driver Tony Percy to hit the track. Tony was soon setting fastest laps until brake issues caused him to ease off somewhat and conserve the car. During his pit stop, he reported that 3rd gear had decided to leave the party altogether, sources reported it was seen in the Buriram United Megastore trying on the new pink football shirt! Tony also mentioned that the brake pedal was getting worse with each lap. Thomas started his second stint and reported that the brake issue seemed to have rectified itself and he began to fight back through the field. Tony again took over the car which was now a respectable 3rd in class. It wasn’t long until the gremlins came back, with Tony reporting in that 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th gear had also decided to take advantage of the 10% discount in the Buriram United Megastore. Tony along with his new best friend 4th gear was told to keep pushing as nothing further could be done to improve the situation.

Tony pitted and luckily 4th gear decided to stay in the car

With the bad memories of the endurance race still fresh in their minds, it was time for the team to now try and concentrate their efforts for the Thailand Super Series. Coming into Rounds 5 & 6 of the TSS, the team still had a mathematical chance of claiming the driver’s championship, although with the leader Hideru Kuroki having a 30 point advantage, the team would need two victories and hope other results went in their favour. The #29 Honda City had been fitted with a new gearbox for this event and during practice the car ran perfectly raising some much-needed confidence in the team.

Qualifying was going well until the car started to understeer which got progressively worse as the laps went by. Thomas still managed a time that put him second on the grid while for the 5th time this season Hideo put himself on pole. The understeer problem was rectified and the car was finalised for Race 1. As the five lights went out Thomas made an uncharacteristic slow start dropping to 4th straight away and the engine problems that had plagued the endurance car in the previous event had now shifted to the Honda City. Down on power, Thomas fell to 7th. With the Championship slipping away he pushed the car to its limits eventually making up one place to cross the line in 6th, with leader Hideru crossing the line first again as he has done in all the races so far this season. Back in the pits, tough choices had to be made regarding the engine and the race ahead… The team had three options 1. Make no repairs to the engine and drive Race 2 underpowered and not competitive 2. Break the engine seal to try to make some repairs and incur the 5 place grid penalty 3. Replace the engine completely and incur a 10 place grid penalty , but race with a competitive engine The championship title was now a very distant dream so focus switched to consolidating 2nd place meaning the team took option 3. Thomas said on choosing option 3 “this is the only way I can take the fight to the other drivers and hopefully I can get through the field as fast as possible to give me a few

| MOTOR TRADER won the race and with it the championship with two races to spare, a faultless first season from the young Japanese driver. TR Motorsport is still second place in the championship and holds an 11 point gap to Khun Yotsarun in third. This means that in no way is second place secured and the team will have to perform well in Bang Saen as there are 7 drivers who could still take the second place. This promises to be a nail-biting finale to the season. Thomas said “We have shown we have the pace to fight for the wins with us setting the fastest laps of the race several times this year, and with Bangsaen being our favourite track, we are aiming for a good result there to finish off the year on a high note" laps to attack the leaders, it should be fun for the spectators” Due to a penalty to another driver Thomas started 15th and by the first corner had already made back several places, as he closed in on the leaders and traded paint with a couple of cars squeezing by at the notorious Bira chicane. With the new engine roaring like a tiger Thomas began to set consecutive fastest laps. The charge, which included a bit of grass cutting had now put him in 6th place and saw him gaining on the leading cars at over a second a lap.

Rounds 7 & 8 will be held at the Bang Saen Festival of Speed November 26th & 27th For more information on TR-Motorsport contact them:info@tr-motorsport.com www.tr-motorsport.com www.facebook.com/TRMotorsportThailand

As the last lap started Thomas was hugging the bumper of the 5th place car which in turn was hugging the bumper of the 4th place car. Entering the last 2 corners of the race all the cars were bunched up but Thomas with over 35 years’ experience in racing could smell blood and positioned himself inside the pack. He charged to the chequered flag overtaking the 5th place car along the pit straight and finished a very creditable 4th. During his fight from 15th to 4th Thomas set the fastest lap for the third time in six races. Hideo Kuroki

Thanks go to Scott Finsten, (marina manager of Ocean Marina Yacht Club) for arranging to provide marina facilities free of charge.Peter Jacops, (Blue Peter Marine) for arranging the complicated off water arrangements.James Mutter, (Sailquest), for providing the “on water” arrangements K Wikki Nualkahair for generously providing the Platu 25 yacht.Doug Smith and Kev Scott for modifying the boat to accept Nina’s wheelchair.Grant Atkinson, at the North sails repair loft, for modifying sails to suit the trip free of charge. Nina, for being brave and adventurous !!

took quadriplegic girl sailing on a Platu 25 sailing yacht A group of kind and generous people gave up their time and money to help a quadriplegic girl Nantini Dhoowa realize her dream. “Nina’ is severely disabled (in all four limbs) but nevertheless has been fully committed to the idea of sailing. Not on a 42 foot cruising yacht mind you with all amenities she chose instead to experience sailing on a Platu, a 25 foot racing yacht with no amenities, just a lot of ropes ! The outing was the perfect way for Nanini to experience sailing after she had followed an intense theoretical sailing course with Sail Instructor Mr James Mutter. The Disabled Sailing Thailand volunteers are now building an SV14 accessible sailing boat which Nina and other sailors with disabilities will be able to sail through joystick controls. Frank Bruno the world famous boxer will be giving a charity evening at the Amari hotel on the 3rd of November, the profits of this charity evening going to 3 designated charity of which Disabled Sailing Thailand is one, so please come support them.

W

ith flights to Istanbul costing from as little as 18,000 Baht and the visa waiver for Thai citizens, Istanbul has become a very accessible holiday destination for Expats and Thais alike. Non-Thai citizens require a visa which you can purchase online (electronic visa) for around 700 Baht. It is also possible to purchase a visa on arrival in Turkey, the arrival halls have self-service machines where you can obtain your visa and it is a very easy procedure. All the major airlines fly from Bangkok to Istanbul. Turkish Airlines (who have won best European Airline for six consecutive years) and Thai Airways, offer direct flights of around eight to ten hours and a short taxi ride will take you into the heart of Istanbul. I, like many people, had my own ideas about Turkey, when I lived in the U.K. I had no interest in visiting Turkey but having spent two weeks there I can honestly now say that it is one of the most fascinating destinations I have visited. Istanbul is the only city in the world that can lay claim to straddling two continents – Europe and Asia and it combines a traditional eastern city with a modern western city. As you amble through the vibrant bustling streets you can actually sense Istanbul’s rich history it seems to ooze from the architecture permeating everything, I almost felt privileged to witness it. In recent months Turkey has endured periods of unrest and a spate of bombings making it an undesirable holiday destination. Security is very high in Istanbul, the airports are the most secure that I have ever been through and there is a police presence at all the major historical sights but other than this life in Istanbul is relaxed and lighthearted. Turkish people are fiercely proud of their country, there are beautiful flowers, flags and displays all over Istanbul and the streets are immaculately kept.Turkish people possess an infectious love of life and are extremely friendly and humorous, they are very positive fun-loving people who are clean and smartly dressed. Wherever I went I was made to feel welcome and people were eager to make conversation. In fact getting around Istanbul is cheap and very easy, the city has an excellent, modern transportation system. If you purchase an ‘Istanbulkart’ card you can get around the city via the Metro Subway, Metro Bus, Funicular train and the ferries that cross the Bosphoros Strait - European and Asian side. You can even use the card on the quaint red trams that run up and down Istiklal Avenue to and from Taksim Square.

SPORT & LEISURE

Accommodation in Istanbul is plentiful and varied from 5-star luxury hotels to basic guest houses and hostels. There is something to suit every pocket, I chose a hotel in Beyoglu near Istiklal Avenue which is the main shopping and entertainment area of Istanbul. Prices for accommodation are comparable to Pattaya. Plus there are countless top-drawer historical attractions in Istanbul. In the two weeks that I was there I managed to visit some of the more well-known ones: Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower, Dolmabahce Palace and The Grand Bazaar (the oldest covered bazaar in the world). A visit to Istanbul without experiencing a Turkish bath would be unthinkable, I chose a spa at one of the nearby hotels which offered private rooms to experience this ancient Turkish tradition. There are many communal bath houses all over Istanbul but if you prefer some privacy then it is probably best to book into one of the many hotel spas. Copious amounts of water are ladled over you on a heated marble slab, lots of soapy foam and scrubbing and 45 minutes later I was done – it was actually quite an enjoyable experience and I certainly felt very clean afterwards – they even washed my hair!

Shopping in Istanbul is fabulous, you can find anything you might be looking for from designer stores in ultra-modern shopping centres to souvenirs in historical covered bazaars. Probably the best place to shop is in and around the spice market near the Galata Bridge, where there are both interesting products and reasonable prices. However as vibrant as it is during the day Istanbul is every bit as vivacious at night. Music seems to pour from every street and the numerous bars and restaurants set up street tables where you can sit and enjoy all the city has to offer. Sitting with a cold glass of Turkish beer and a plate of fresh almonds is heavenly. Street musicians are everywhere playing traditional Turkish music; the whole atmosphere is completely intoxicating. During my stay I flew south for four days to visit the beach resort of Marmaris on the Turkish Riviera. Marmaris is breathtakingly beautiful, it is set in a bay surrounded by pine-forested hills and turquoise waters. As it is just an hour’s flying time from Istanbul you can easily enjoy a two-centre holiday, giving a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Istanbul. Booking offices can be found in Taksim Square at the top of Istiklal Avenue or you can book online using websites like Fare compare or Skyscanner. For a little over 1,000 Baht each way you can book your flight. Before you go you should check with your bank that your debit card will allow you to withdraw money whilst you are in Turkey. Although I was assured by three banks in Pattaya that my card would work, it didn’t, and I had to ring Bangkok to get it cleared for overseas transactions. It is always advisable to purchase travel insurance before any holiday, BUPA and AXA, both on Sukhumvit Road Pattaya offer good policies at a reasonable price and for around 1,000 Baht you will get a policy that will cover you for most things. I certainly hope that I will have the opportunity to visit Istanbul again one day, it is a truly magical, unforgettable and intoxicating city.

What Demographic changes

can mean for your investments. In this article I’ll show you what demographic risks you should look out for and what effects they can have on your portfolio. Declining Investment in Equities A study by researchers at Yale and the University of California indicates that population shifts can have a significant influence on investor behavior and equity values. The study says population estimates are relatively reliable and the group that generally invests the most (the older generation) will move increasingly into retirement and out of equities.Indeed, the baby boomers were largely responsible for the "roaring '90s" in which equity investment was so profitable. The big investors, middle-aged people between 40 and 59, will decline in number constantly - at least over the short and medium term. This could leave a chasm in the demand for investments.

People Moving Across Borders Despite the challenges posed by an aging population, it is feasible that investment and consumer behavior may change for the better as a result of large influxes of immigration. A country such as the United States already has substantial immigrant flows, and will have less to fear than other countries with lower immigration rates. This trend may alter too, and the ultimate

result depends partly on the extent to which influences from America or continental European countries spill over into the whole of North America. The “Donald” may well have a big influence here.In any event, these demographic trends not only create risks, but also opportunities. A clear implication is that investors may want to focus on emerging markets and regions where demographic trends differ from those back home.

Changing the Way You Look at the Future

Peter Temple, a writer for Interactive Investor in the U.K., draws further conclusions for investments in his article "The Long Term" (2002). He points out that the aging population and the pension time bomb create an obvious link to healthcare and financial services. However, he warns that this does not automatically mean that buying stocks from the major drug companies or health sector funds are smart investments - many are yesterday's winners. Temple says tomorrow's winners will be companies that provide a variety of cost-effective services to elderly people and pensioners. These services extend from medical treatment, care homes, travel and anything else focusing on that specific target market. The large number of pensioners who are relatively poor suggests that luxury services may not make the best investments. However, firms that produce medical and orthopedic products for the aging will do a roaring trade if prices fall over time.

Watch the Trends Closely

It is difficult to project prevailing demographic trends and their impact on future asset values. However, it is less difficult to monitor trends as they evolve and to rebalance your portfolio accordingly over time. Furthermore, such ongoing vigilance is essential in view of the major changes in the investment landscape that inevi-

At the same time, consider going overweight on budget healthcare and related services or products in these aging-population areas. Also consider investing more in equities and property in dynamic economies where populations are rising and remain youthful. Asia and parts of South America would be the prime targets in this case.

The Bottom Line

If you're concerned about this effect, you'll need to keep observing these trends so you can be prepared to act on them if necessary. Demography is always in flux, and so is the investment opportunities associated with it. For advice in constructing your portfolio jerry@swissinvestcenter.net

tably will result from the relationship between birth, death and what happens in between. While no investor can accurately predict what the coming decades will have in store for the financial markets, there are few strategies to con sider trying if you believe that the boomers' retirement could weigh on the market place. For example, you should monitor population trends in any country in which you invest, particularly the developed regions like North America and Western Europe. If the investing public continues to decline, consider reducing your investment in equities in general. Certain types of bonds and other asset classes like hedge funds might provide lucrative alternatives.

ost years Thailand enjoys sixteen public holidays and often extra days are declared for random national occasions. These holidays are a mix of Buddhist religious celebrations and commemorations of past and present monarchs. This year one of the national day's off will be on the 24th October as the 23rd is a Sunday. This holiday is to commemorate the passing of King Chulalongkorn who died in 1910. King Chulalongkorn or Rama V was the fifth monarch of the Chakri dynasty of which the current monarch King Bhumibol is the ninth ruler. King Chulalongkorn reigned when Thailand was called Siam and came to the throne when he was only fifteen. He went on to reign for 42 years and is one of the Kingdom's most revered heads of state. Widely known as the modernising monarch, one of his greatest achievements was the abolition of slavery. Before his reign as many as a third of the country's population were enslaved, and children were often born into a life they could not escape. King Rama V was the instigator of changing Siam from the lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar so the country would be more in line with the western world, though officially Thailand still use the Buddhist year which is 543 years ahead of the western year. He is also famed for his ardent Thai nationalism, and for his skill in fending off the threat of European colonialism, despite the fact that large tracts of Siam were ceded to the Europeans during the period.

King Chulalongkorn managed to prevent Thailand from being colonized by extending friendship and travelling extensively to western countries like America, Great Britain, France and Russia. Because of this, Thailand remains as the only country in Southeast Asia to have never been colonized.Besides that, King Chulalongkorn was the first Thai King to send the Royal Princes to be educated in Europe. Throughout Chulalongkorn’s reign, radical writers had their works published for the first time. Works that were previously banned were allowed to be read by the public once again. However even today, the country still has powerful Lese Majeste laws in operation. King Chulalongkorn was also instrumental in developing Thailand's first postal service and the first ever railway route from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the country's old capital. One of his greatest achievements was to lead his predominantly Buddhist country to accept the rights and religious freedom of other faiths. The King was also responsible for reforming government and streamlining the administration of the country by dividing it into provinces and districts. And four additional ministries were also founded by the king; including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Public Instruction and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The title, “Great Beloved King” was bestowed on him by his people due to his frequent custom of walking amongst his subjects in disguise to find out what life was truly like for the Siamese people, in doing so he came to be known for his compassion. He was the first Thai monarch to visit Europe and used his influence amongst the heads of state that he met to maintain the country's independence. This was a considerable feat when you look back on the widespread colonialism taking place across the region at the time. His legacy lives on with his appearance on the 100 baht banknote and the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok that was named after him. Also he was portrayed in the wonderful Hollywood film The King and I in which his father King Mongkut was the central character. On Chulalongkorn Day offerings are made at the many memorials of the King around Thailand. But it is in the capital, Bangkok that this is best observed. The most well known memorial of King Chulalongkorn is the equestrian statue of the King on horseback at the front of the Ananta Samakhom throne hall in the capital's Dusit district. The area itself is resplendent for tree-lined boulevards inspired by the king's overseas travels.

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya.

SOLUTIONS

So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily

The Visitor

fter many years Neil Hutchison author of Fool in Paradise column has written to say that he can no longer continue as ill health prevents him from returning to Pattaya as often as he would like in order to continue with his monthly contributions. Neil everyone at the Patrtaya Trader wishes you a speedy recovery and by way of a tribute for all your many enjoyable articles we are revisiting that of April 2009:

“No matter how diverse we are, what far reaches of the planet we come from or what language we speak, there are certain commonalities within all expats living in Pattaya . I have witnessed it too many times for it to be mere coincidence, an example coming to mind stems from the fact that we all believe we have found paradise on earth here in Pattaya. And what happens when a person discovers something wonderful ? He wants to share his good fortune by telling others about it. We have all done it but in hindsight, is it such a good idea? Some years ago I bought my son here for his 18th birthday present it was something I wish my own father had done for me. However, his 10 day vacation turned into a nightmare for me, not because he did anything wrong but because I was constantly on the look out to keep him safe. At the back of my mind was the fear that if he so much as got a cut finger his mother would kill me. So I assumed the role of Financier, “Mother Hen” and “Party Pooper”. Trying to ensure he had a good time whilst keeping out of trouble. This did not always work because he was tall, handsome and had the energy of an 18 year old whilst I was paranoid, frugal and had the energy of a Soi Dog in the mid-day

sun. Keeping him safe on the streets was a full time job. Love him as much as I do, it was a relief when he boarded the plane for home. He returned safely, had a great time but I was on valium! All jokes aside bringing young guys or inexperienced guys to Pattaya is not the only problem, bringing older, knowledgeable guys here for the first time can also be trouble. They seem to know too much for their own good but all their travel experience does not prepare them for Pattaya. I invited a guy in his 60s over for a visit and he managed a stopover in Thailand for a week during a “Do South East Asia”. He was wise, confident, brash, experienced –and a total pain! For instance, simply crossing the road with him almost gave me a heart attack, he was used to Australia, Europe, and even Hong Kong and Singapore where traffic laws are well known and enforced, so he would come to a zebra crossing on 2nd road and would just walk out. “Jack ! “ I’d shout. “Get back here ! You’re gonna get killed” “Why?” he’d answer. “This is a pedestrian crossing and they’ll stop”. “No they won’t! That is just paint on the road and nobody cares what it means”. But he wouldn’t listen to me, and among screeching brakes and honking horns, he would miraculously make it across the road. Meanwhile, I’d be left waiting for a break in the endless stream of homicidal traffic.

Neil we hope it won’t be too long before you’re a Visitor to Pattaya again ! (Ed)
