I

n April the Thai Government announced the date of the cremation of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which will take place on the 26th of October 2017 and we were all alerted to the fact that the actual funeral will be over a five day period. The confirmation of the date also set a framework for the coronation of the late King’s son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The new king actually ascended the throne in December 2016, but the formal coronation was in abeyance until his father was laid to rest. For those of us that having been living in the kingdom over the past year, we all are fully aware that the country has been in an official state of mourning for twelve months. But with these two immense ceremonies imminent, it is expected that the lull in politics will come to an end and portends of a general election are being muted.King Bhumibol passed away on the 13th of October 2016 after suffering a long illness, he was 88 at the time. During his reign the king signified a symbol of unity amongst his people, whilst different political factions clashed, the King remained a calming influence over his polarized nation. The nation stands with baited breath waiting to formally say “goodbye” to their most beloved monarch. The actual ceremony is expected to be a lavish occasion and deservedly so, and it has been suggested that a budget of over USD$30 million has been allocated. It is also expected that a huge crowd is expected to attend the funeral and a massive crematorium is being erected close to the Grand Palace, at Sanam Luang. An incredible six million mourners have paid their last respects to their late king’s remains at the Grand Palace, and the nation will come together as one on the 26th to witness the final chapter in this most emotional period of Thailand’s history. King Bhumibol was coronated in 1946, and was instantly revered as a demigod. It was a time of unease in Southeast Asia at the time and indeed for Thailand too. These upheavals, often violent, were a dangerous period for Thailand, and King Bhumibol steered his nation through turbulent waters. The construction of the Royal Funeral Pyre in Sanam Luang is well under way and is a most elaborate affair. The Thai construction masters are constructing a “vision of heaven”, which is a nine-spired pyre that will despatch his soul into the afterlife.

COVER STORY

The construction represents Mount Meru, which is the centre of the Hindu universe, and it will feature the ultimate of Thai arts and architecture, with intricate towers adorned with images from mythology and from the late king’s life.

The main tower will be 165 feet high, with a seven-tiered roof and a spire. This will be surrounded by eight smaller pavilions representing the mountains that encircle Mount Meru. There will also be four ponds at each corner of the pyre which symbolise the Cosmic Ocean flowing around it. To represent King Bhumibol’s enthusiasm for rural development there will also be a small garden, featuring rice and vegetables. The icons on the pyre to portray the King’s life and accomplishments will include dams, wind farms, reservoirs and irrigation projects. These were the very achievements that bought a nation together and cemented a love affair with their monarch.

The elaborate wooden pyre will be dismantled after the ceremony, and its wood sent to temples and wats all over the kingdom. The pyre will be the second tallest in history and the design of the eight towers is to represent King Bhumibol’s position as the ninth monarch of the Chakri dynasty. In the past different types of ceremonial precedents have been applicable. Years ago for , and for an auspicious occasion such as this the whole nation were required to shave their heads. The new monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has already been making his mark. He has made major alterations to the royal household and called for constitutional changes. Unlike many people previously thought, the new king has made it clear that he will not simply be a figurehead. Thailand is Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy behind Indonesia and is ranked 27th in the world, and the new king is determined to forge the country into economic prosperity. King Bhumibol ascended the throne at an early age and was very much a “modern monarch” of his time. He was born in the United States and educated in the West, he even played saxophone with jazz luminaries such as Duke Ellington and composed his own music. He was a keen sailor, loved photography and even an expressionist oil painter.Later in his reign the king was instrumental of keeping his people together, his tireless work on massive rural projects benefitted his subjects and the nation took their king to their hearts. King Bhumibol is cited with having over 4,000 development projects to his name and the famous photos of the Thai monarch armed with a notebook, a two-way radio and camera around his neck have become part of Thai folklore. The 26th of October will signify a massive change for Thailand, it is a day that will be recorded in history for its significance, and a day that will also pose questions of what is to come. Things will never be the same again, but that is life, it evolves and changes on a constant basis. For those that lived in Thailand during the reign of King Bhumibol it was a privilege to experience such an immense period of Thailand’s history.

Hi Readers This October as was the case in our special edition of the Trader in October 2016, is an especially important one for those of us who are living or having holidays in Thailand. With so many Royal Ceremonies and National holidays to be observed we should all aim to be respectful at this time. Therefore we point out the days involved in our monthly events page and Kevin Cain has more observances for readers on page 24 with his article Thai Etiquette and Traditions. In fact there’s plenty of Thai culture and Tradition in this month’s Pattaya Trader magazine with the show at the Elephant Village, our review of Birds and Bees and Cabbages & Condoms and on our Sports and Leisure pages a nod to Thai fishing culture when even the Highlander gets involved ! For any of you with a sweet tooth take a look at Candyland’s shop on Thepprasit road each jar is sure to remind you of a favourite sweets from childhood and if you’re still feeling hungry then why not get along to the Hawker Chan who have just opened in Royal Garden Plaza or the lovely people at Jaybee’s - this month’s Dining in Detail.

By Lisa Handy with photos by Matthew Pendergast, Dana Rosiger & Laura Youngson

St Andrew’s International school teacher Lisa Handy and Ashley Pitocco Faith play in the highest altitude football game ever!

I

n May 2007, a high-altitude football controversy arose when FIFA introduced a temporary ban on international matches at more than 2,500 metres above sea level, citing concerns about players' health and the "unfair" advantage to acclimatised home teams. The ruling meant that Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia would be prevented from hosting FIFA World Cup qualifiers in their own capital cities. However the ban was revoked in May 2008 and 10 years later, on 24th June 2017, 32 women from 20 countries assisted by a medical team lead by Doctor Dana Levin of Nasa, 3 documentary and TV crews and a body of over 320 guides and porters, climbed Mount Kilimajaro with the aim of breaking a world record for the highest game of altitude football ever played. At the backbone of such an incredible challenge and feat of exploration are two women, Laura Youngson and Erin Blankenship who formed the Equal Playing Field Initiative off the back of a late night conversation regarding inequality for females in sport, from grassroots to elite level. The World Record match was part of Equal Playing Field’s “Altitude Football Project” in partnership with Football for Peace. The game, involving team Glacier and team Volcano, which ended in a 0-0 draw was just the start. The partnership aims to run a series of football clinics in 25 countries across the world in the next 2 years in the lead up to the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Two of the 32 women who achieved the double world record for the highest altitude game ever played and the highest women’s game were British international teacher Lisa Handy, of St Andrew’s International school, St Andrews International School, Green Valley and ex Hua Hin resident Ashley Pitocco Faith, an American/Thai national who has played pro in Sweden and Belgium. The women played a full 90 minute, 11-a-side regulation game, officiated by female FIFA referees at an altitude of 5729m, more than 1.75km higher than the highest stadium in the world (Club Bamin Real Potosi in Bolivia which is at an altitude of 3960metres.The motto of the EPF initiative is “Equality, opportunity, respect, nothing more, nothing less”. We set a world record to draw attention to the inequalities faced by women in football and sport and inspire the next generation to participate and promote the game. The discrimination, intimidation, and preclusion of women and girls in sport makes the simple enjoyment of a game like football an uphill struggle for many. Even those females who have proven themselves on every world stage remain under recognized and under-valued for their achievements. Every woman on the climb was a strong, resilient character, but for each one of us there are a thousand women or girls who stopped playing many, many years ago. You shouldn’t have to be strong, resilient and have a thick skin to play football. I climbed Kilimanjaro to demonstrate that the adventurous soul reaches for a goal and does not proclaim a challenging experience as an ordeal. Adversity teaches us to look within AND look beyond, only through adversity can we understand the power of change. When your cause is greater than the strength you think is inside of you, your strength multiplies to fit the cause. The peaceful fight for equality for women in sport has many roads yet to be bridged. I climbed Kilimanjaro with an incredible bunch of humans regardless of gender, who will continue to raise awareness of women’s rights both on and off the pitch through courage, humility, resilience, persistence and passion in order to create a brighter future for the generations to come. I just happened to have the best time of my life and find a new family in the process ! EPF are looking to partner with Jump!Foundation Bangkok and St Andrews International Schools, Cognita Group, two organisations that are already doing inspiring things with local communities, to run a clinic for women and girls that wouldn’t usually have access to the game in order to inspire more females to play football in Thailand. Watch out for Movie Premier Evenings locally of the beIN Sports ‘Equal Playing Field Documentary’ or find it online at beIN Sports. You can follow the organizations future projects through twitter, facebook and Instagram @equalplayingfieldinitiative.

UP A CRAZY RIVER?

CRUISING THE MAGNIFICENT MEKONG. The Mekong River isn’t so much crazy as alive with curiosities and contradictions. Head upstream to run aground on a few. “We think a kid is old enough to go to school when he or she can reach over their head and touch their opposite ear,” says the young schoolteacher at the Lao village of Ban Phar Leib on a remote stretch of the Mekong. It seems as good as any other system. A gaggle of healthy kids line-up before their two-room school to lustily sing the Lao national anthem before escorting us back to our good river ship, Champa Pandaw. We’re cruising upriver from Vientiane to northern Thailand on a one thousand kilometre, ten-day trip. Our vessel is a flash reincarnation of the classic Irrawaddy Flotilla steamers of early last century, with plenty of added teak and brass, gin and tonic. The Mekong River tumbles from heaven to earth, from Tibet to the South China Sea, coursing 4300 km across six countries. Its 700km passage through Laos is a corridor of whirlpools and reefs, then tranquil, sunny reaches, and, just as quickly again, steep gorges and hidden sandbanks. Our first excursion ashore is to the old French town of Pak Lai where a hammer-and-sickle flag on the main street is an ample clue to the system of government in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Embodying multiple oxymorons, the governance here might be called “One-party, democratic, Marxist, communist capitalism.” Go figure. Next day, on rounding a river bend we find our way blocked by the huge new Sayaburi hydroelectric dam. Laos, resource-poor but for its Mekong flow, has two dams under construction and seven more proposed. Nicknamed “the battery of Southeast Asia,” it will sell 95 percent of the Sayaburi power to Thailand. The long-term downside of the short-term upside is that so many dams are being built along the Mekong that downstream nations like Cambodia and Vietnam are in for an increasingly dry century.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

The Mekong is a liquid highway, its own Silk Route of trade and migration. Our Lao captain, 62-year old Xieng Souk divines the river’s whorls and eddies like a palmist might read a hand. No digital gizmos for him, just two eyes that for 40 years have studied and stored the nuances of every braided channel and dragon-toothed shoal in this magnificent river. Our ship’s 23 passengers are British, American, Australian, Swiss and French. Curiously, one French couple will dine with everyone except their fellow countrymen. Meanwhile, the Americans first have to suss out on which side of the Hocus Potus line their peers stand or fall. Having discerned that none of them is yet enthralled by their new tweeter dude, they proceed to sup without fear of political indigestion.

On land we visit schools (some, sadly, with no teacher) and small wats (the temple gong often made of an old artillery shell). Three hundred km north of Vientiane we hit the tourist mecca of Luang Prabang. With its 32 temples, this trifecta of Buddhism, France and Lao kings is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in Asia. At dawn each day monks drift through its UNESCOprotected streets, accepting food donations from would-be merit-makers. Ironically, too much of it, being sugar drinks and noodle snacks, is also diabetes-making. A few hours later in trendy cafes along those same historic streets, cosmopolitan hipsta baristas serve lattes to flashpackers at equally cosmopolitan prices. Meanwhile, Luang Prabang’s golden-roofed wats glitter against the river’s slow-boat tide. I love its 1904 Royal Palace, now the National Museum. Where else can you see a photo of a laughing Ho Chi Minh and the last Lao King, Sisavangvattana kicking out the jams, dancing with two pretty women? Having wandered the gilded, 400-year old Wat Xieng Thong, for me the best spiritual trip in town is to be beside the river at sunset with a chilled Beer Lao and a plate of chicken satay. The strangest trip in town is just across the road, a gaggle of “Hello, Mister” girls spruiking in front of a World Heritage-listed massage parlour. Next day Thailand appears on our port bow, marked by — what else but — a miniature Dutch windmill. Again, go figure. On the Lao shore we see vast banana plantations, all for export to China. It’s an indicator that we are approaching the Special Economic Zone, a huge Chinese concession in Laos where the dominant “economic activity”, beside bananas, appears to be a casino complex for fly-in-fly-out foreign gamblers. At Chiang Khong it is time for us to farewell the fine Champa Pandaw and step ashore in Thailand’s once-notorious Golden Triangle. This Mekong junction, where three countries meet, previously had a hell reputation as a smugglers’ haven. The opium warlords and Kuomintang mule trains are now long gone and cabbages have replaced poppies on the Thailand side of the river. The largest structure, at the Thai apex of the Triangle, is a lofty golden Buddha serenely contemplating the Mekong confluence. It’s a different story on the other shores. Upstream in Myanmar, the biggest building visible is a contemporary, secular temple — a casino. Downstream in Laos is another massive casino, Chinese-built and crowned (literally) by a huge, European-style crown. Meanwhile, also on the Lao side, facing the Buddha is a splendid golden dome that might be either a mosque or cathedral — or even a casino. It is, in fact, the Lao Immigration office. More go figure.

PLATELET-RICH PLASMA THERAPY (PRP) AS A SKIN TREATMENT

W

e all hate to see our youthful looks go but unfortunately part of the normal aging process is for the skin to lose its fullness and elasticity which leads to wrinkles and dry, dull facial appearance. Once the only answer for this was to have invasive cosmetic therapies but nowadays many of us would prefer to embrace alternative treatments. One such treatment ,becoming increasingly popular and sometimes dubbed “The Vampire Facial” is PRP skin treatment (Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy). PRP has been used since the mid 90s for injuries and acute conditions such as osteoarthritis and tendon damage. It uses the patient's own blood sample which is separated into a red blood cell portion and a platelet rich plasma portion by use of a centrifugal process. The platelet rich plasma part contains white blood cells and growth factors that once injected into the skin stimulate the repair and regeneration of tissue.

Obviously as PRP is a product formed from the patient's own blood there is less chance of a negative reaction unlike fillers that contain foreign substances (think “trout pout”). In fact the body as a usual matter of course, will leak out platelets into an injured area to start the growth factor and healing process. PRP injections just give a little help to this process by directing the platelets to the areas most in need. This will then help the skin maintain and rebuild tissue by increasing the production of collagen and elastin that are responsible for tissue strength and elasticity. We all know that collagen is important for skin strength but it can be seriously damaged by sun, smoking and the general aging process, in turn leading to poor skin texture and worst of all wrinkles. PRP helps combat wrinkles by stimulating collage production and also fat cells that can create a fuller more youthful, “plumped up” look to the skin. So if you fancy giving this treatment a go it is no longer necessary to travel all the way to Bangkok as the treatment can be found right here in Pattaya and certainly Sure Cell, on Soi 6, Pratumnak Road will be able to help you. They are at the forefront of PRP treatments and their Doctors expert at administering them. They advise that prior to treatment it is most important to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, caffeine or fatty foods on the day. If you like, you can take painkillers beforehand but the device used during the procedure is a micro needling hand held pen that only makes pinpoint punctures to the skin Also, 30 minutes beforehand the face is anaesthetised with cream and so is pretty numb during the actual process. Afterwards, there is no real “downtime”, the face may just be a little sensitive to touch immediately after the procedure but will very soon have a more youthful glow, look refreshed and rejuvenated with uneven or dull skin tone, mild scarring and wrinkles, improved.

As October the 26th looms towards us, the cremation ceremony of King Bhumibol Adulyadej poses certain questions of how we should all behave during this difficult time. If you are thinking of visiting the Royal Palace and Wat Pra Kaew around this time then it is most likely all will be closed to the public. The day of the actual cremation will be a public holiday and it is widely accepted that many business will close for at least one day and perhaps more.Processions are also expected throughout the kingdom so be prepared for traffic problems and congestion if you are travelling. During the rest of October if you intend to visit the Royal Palace and the surrounding attractions you must wear sombre clothing, be mindful to show respect to the Royal Family at all times. Showing respect to the King is law in Thailand (lese majeste) and everybody must adhere to this including visitors. Apart from maintaining proper etiquette during the cremation period there are many traditions that you must be aware of not to fall foul of in everyday life in Thailand.

General Taboos In Thailand You must never sit with your feet pointing towards people, do not touch the top of somebody’s head as this is the most sacred part of the body, never use threatening gestures or brash tone of voice, do not give black gifts.

Visiting A Thai Home When visiting a Thai home make sure to take your shoes off before entering the home, wear the dress code as applicable- in Thailand this is often casual and when entering the home remember to step over the threshold never on it.

Eating & Drinking Most Thai meals are eaten with a fork and spoon although chopsticks are used for noodle type dishes. The fork is used to guide food onto the spoon but if you are eating sticky rice you may use your right hand. When the food arrives at the table it is usually for everybody, wait till somebody takes some and then you can begin. Never leave rice on your plate, and never take the last bit of food from the serving bowl. Licking your fingers is not considered polite.

Giving A Gift

It is always a nice touch to take a small gift to the host’s house, if you do take a gift then wrap it up attractively but avoid wrapping paper of green, blue or black. Fruit is a perfectly acceptable and would be welcomed as a gift but carnations and marigolds are considered to be flowers used for funerals .

Meeting & Greeting The first thing you notice in Thailand is “The Wai” it is the traditional way of greeting and has strict rules of protocol how to use it. It is performed by raising both hands with the palms pressed together and the fingers facing towards the sky. Normally the Wai is relaxed and gently touches the body. The Wai does not just mean Hello, it is also a sign of respect and is often given by someone of lower status to that of somebody of higher status. The Wai shows its respect by its height and how low the head is bowed to come down and meet the thumbs. A Wai can be performed, standing, sitting or even whilst moving. It is protocol that the youngest and most junior in status offers the Wai first. However, if there is a vast difference in social status do not expect your Wai to be returned. When visiting another person’s home, let the host introduce you to the other guests. This then lets them know your status and how they should respond to you. Often if you are ushered to the head of the table then you are most respected.

Getting Along With Others Thai’s do not behave like Westerners when they are together, for instance it is quite acceptable for close friends to be quite tactile and hold hands no matter what sex. However when Westerners are with Thais it is important to remember that hand gestures can be used but must never be aggressive and this also goes for mannerisms and general deportment. It is of high significance that you never say or do something that may lead to a Thai losing face. If you have a problem or wish to communicate something critical you must do so in private, and even then tread carefully.By the same token, Thais will rarely say anything derogatory or anything that will offend you. They will tend to use indirect communication or change the subject if they feel uncomfortable, this is often frustrating but try to understand there is a purpose why they are acting indifferent and vague. When communicating with people they do not know, Thais generally leave at least one yard between you and them for personal space. This space reduces as your friendship blossoms. As with Western countries it is important to keep eye contact, but those of lesser status will tend to keep their heads bowed.

Names and Such One of the most confusing things to foreigners about Thais is trying to remember and understand their names. Nearly every Thai has two nicknames, one for their close friends and one for casual acquaintances. Their real first name is generally preceded by Khun no matter what sex, it is a type of overall term for Mr, Mrs or Miss. Surnames are rarely used, only in legall documentation or very formal occasions. If the person is a professional or of a high status their name might be preceded with Ajarn. If you have any doubt seek clarification so as not to cause any offense. Trying to digest all this Thai etiquette can be a trifle overwhelming. However, it is important that you persevere if you intend to stay in the kingdom and want to be accepted. Even if you don’t quite get it all right all of the time, the very fact that you are trying will go a long way to endear yourself to your Thai friends and acquaintances.

Jaybee’s B

illed as “A Music and Sports Bar with Good Priced Cold Beer”, Jaybee’s is rapidly gaining a reputation as the place to be on the Darkside.

Many of their punters love the outdoor ambiance, so whilst sipping on your ice cold beer, you can be cooled by the evening breeze and if you are in to your music then Jaybee’s will suit you down to the ground. Mine host John, loves his music and although his roots go right back to soul and the Caister Soul Weekend, Jaybee’s will be happy to play more or less whatever you want. Here at the Trader we have been getting favourable reports back at Chaiyapruk Towers not only about the music but also the food being knocked out of Jaybee’s new kitchen so we had to pop along to see what all the fuss was about. Firstly,Thai food starts at only 60 baht and is outstanding value for money, many of the old favourites appear with the addition of a fiery Somtam and a crunchy Papaya Salad. As most of Jaybee’s patrons are Falangs, the selection of western food available is also extensive. Appetisers such as Wings, Nuggets, and Spring Rolls are ideal to snack on when you are watching a live Premier game, or perhaps if you are peckish around lunchtime you would like to tuck into a juicy Burger or a salty Bacon Butty ? My choice was a juicy Cheese Burger

topped with Bacon and served with homemade fries, I must say that the fries were top drawer just like my mum used to make. Whereas my colleague opted for Chicken Wings which were crunchy and crispy and cooked right through. On the whole, the main dishes are good old “pub grub” fayre. Cooked as they should be with large plates of, Gammon Steak with Egg and Chips, Liver & Bacon Mushy Peas and Gravy, Steak & Kidney Pie Chips and Peas, or a nice spicy Chicken Vindaloo served either with rice or chips. Also, who can resist a nice pie whilst having a beer or two? Jaybee’s offer a selection of succulent pastry delights including: Steak & Kidney, Chicken Mushroom, Minced Beef and Onions, Cornish Pasty and Fisherman’s. We were sitting on the new covered deck area which really got the benefit of a cool wind so although Jaybee’s also has a plethora of fans dotted around, on the day we visited there was really no need for them as sitting in our comfortable bar stools we found the temperature to be just perfect.

John the owner is keen that patrons feel happy to bring their kids to join the fun and at the rear of the bar is a private beer garden with its own kids’ sized football goal, scooters and such like to keep the little treasures entertained whilst you watch a match on one of the four large screens. Jaybee’s has built a loyal following in its debut months and John is keen to look after his punters. Every Saturday there is Killer Pool including free food, and also a live band playing. So if you enjoy pool then why not join Jaybee’s Pool team which play on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays?. Saying our goodbyes to John and his team, it suddenly hit me what Jaybee’s reminds me of. It has a Caribbean “laidback” feel to it and the open sided building now sporting its new deck area, is welcoming to any visitor happening to be passing by. The “Dark Side” has yet another shining star illuminating the neighbourhood. East Pattaya is certainly blossoming at the moment and Jaybee’s is leading the way.

hings are certainly heating up in the race for 2018 World Cup qualification, which this time around will be held on Russian soil.Despite the furore surrounding placement of this and the 2022 World Cup Finals, qualification for the most prestigious of national tournaments is on the final furlong.

There were calls from some quarters that the finals were “bought” by the Russian football federation. Whether this was conjecture or not, it wasn’t helped when the Russians implied that their files had all been deleted back at soccer HQ in Moscow! Anyway, this article isn’t about whether the tournament should go ahead, it’s happening. Let’s focus on who is going to be there and who isn’t.

England No surprise that England are “tearing up trees” in their series of qualifying matches, but of course they always do. Are we going to see a different competitive England this time? Or will “Pep” Southgate go the same was a “Woy” Hodgson, Capello, McLaren Et.Al. Currently England are sitting pretty in UEFA Group F pole position, with a comfortable margin over both Slovakia and Slovenia. Perhaps more worrying signs are that even with their top billing they have struggled to really despatch lower quality opposition properly. A 2-1 win at Wembley after going behind wasn’t the most inspiring of performances. Likewise the 4-0 away win at part time Malta was on paper a decent result; however, when you factor in that there was 3 goals after the 86th minute then it was little wonder the press suggested the performance was off-par. A single point for England in one of their last two matches against Slovenia and Lithuania will surely be enough for Southgate to start thinking about accommodation in Russia. • England vs Slovenia - 5th Oct • Lithuania vs England - 8th Oct

Scotland Also featuring in England’s group are our north of the border cousins. Scotland have had a late rally, and didn’t they need it ! Currently sitting level on points with Slovenia, Scotland really do need to carry on their decent form. Thankfully for the wannabe Europeans it is still in their hands to reach the 2nd place come the final curtain. Diminutive Gordon Strachan was certainly under pressure to produce qualification this time around. Failing to hit the target and we will likely witness a change in direction by the Scottish FA.

SPORT & LEISURE

Scotland's final games are as follows: • Scotland vs Slovakia - 5th Oct • Slovenia vs Scotland - 8th Oct

Wales After their unbelievable exploits in France 2016, Wales have found progress in the UEFA Group D a little hard to come by. Some have suggested that Chris Coleman should have gone on to other things after the European Championships. Not because he failed, but actually because he was never likely to accomplish anything like it again with the Welsh lads. Anyway, that's (ancient) history now as he stuck with Wales and at present they are just keeping the Republic of Ireland out of possible qualification.

It should be noted that only 1 team will make automatic qualification from the European groups; however, there is potential glory still available for the teams that finish 2nd. It’s a simple one this time, the eight best runners up advancing to a 2 legged knockout against one of the other teams, with the winner going through to Russia. Wales upcoming games: • Georgia vs Wales - 6th Oct

Wales vs Republic of Ireland - 9th Oct

Northern Ireland Michael O’Neil has being doing great things with the Northern Irish team for some time now. Keeping a relatively low-profile since accepting the role back in 2011, O’Neil has already guaranteed his team to finish at least 2nd in UEFA Group C.To be fair it is unlikely that they will grab top spot, so will have to face a play-off to make it to Russia, but it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. They face a crunch tie at home to Germany, which if anything they will want to draw or at least keep the scoreline acceptable. This will enhance their chances of finishing as one of the best 8 2nd placed teams (as above). • Northern Ireland vs Germany - 5th Oct

Norway vs Northern Ireland - 8th Oct

Other Notable Nations Sadly Thailand have performed much as expected in Group B of the AFC Third Round qualifiers. Expectations probably weren't that high when they realised they would be pitted against the likes of Japan and Australia for qualification. However, they have picked up a couple of draws against the UAE and Australia, with their other games coming as losses. Australia’s 2-2 draw against Thailand may well have cost the socceroos dear, as they finished outside of the 2 automatic places and now face a 4th round match-off against Syria. Japan won the group by a point from Saudi Arabia who finished above Australia on goal-difference. The Saudi’s in the process cementing their place for the 4th time at a World Cup Final tournament. Something very strange has being going on in Holland, with the wheels nearly falling off their World Cup hopes. The dutch currently sit in 3rd position, requiring positive results in their final two matches against Belarus and Sweden if they are to have any hope of booking the flight to Moscow. If I was a gambling man (which of course is illegal over here) I’d be backing France and Sweden to finish in that order in UEFA Group A qualification.

Watching the Games Of course, European qualification means that games will be played circa 2-3am (Thai time), so either you will have a decent TV package or be wanting to head over the the likes of the Robin Hood or one of the other Retox Bars, I-Rovers or other quality sports bar in Pattaya. Onwards and upwards - See you in Russia…..

o you know what the World Ironman Championship is all about? Perhaps if you are aware that it is run and organised by the World Triathlon Corporation you might be able to take a better guess.

The event was first held back in 1978 and Hawaii was selected as the perfect place for the athletes to compete. Although the actual Islands of Hawaii have changed as host, the Championships are still held there today. The disciplines of the Triathlon are tough, with an endurance swim, a marathon and a bike race.In 1978 fifteen competitors arrived in Waikiki to take the inaugural Ironman Challenge, their instructions were to to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles. The Championship moved in 1981 from Waikiki to Big Island and its formidable lava fields of Kona. The athletes have to battle not just the lava desert terrain but the infamous 45mph “ho’omumuku” crosswinds and thirty five degrees of baking temperatures. This October over 2,000 athletes are expected to descend upon Hawaii to try to endure the 140.6 miles of tortuous competition. The World Ironman Championships will present the ultimate triathlon test of body, mind and spirit and only the strongest will prevail. This year the Championship will once again take place on the Big Island of Hawaii in Kailua-Kona. The first discipline is the swim which begins and ends at Kailua Pier, then the second segment the cycle race will see competitors cycle north on the Kona Coast through scorching lava fields and then along the Kohala Coast to the small village of Hawi, and then returning home by the same route. The last segment is the marathon, and the course takes the runners through Kailua-Kona and on the same road as the cyclists. The runners then make their way back down Ali’i Drive to the winning post. On average most competitors have to train for at least six months to attempt the World Ironman Challenge and will put around 25 hours a week into their training of the three disciplines. The only age requirement for competitors is that they be eighteen or over although they must compete in their Age Group division. This is laid down by the International Triathlon Federation and the USA Triathlon’s Age Group Competition rule. All competitors have a time limit of seventeen hours to complete the three events, and cut-off times are applied to each segment. The competition is also separated into divisions: Professional, Age Group, Handcycle, Open and Military.

So how do the athletes qualify for this most prestigious of triathlon’s? There are actually three ways of qualifying, by earning a slot at one of the qualifying events held worldwide, or by being selected in the Ironman Legacy program or finally by winning a place through the Ironman Charitable eBay Auction. Previous champions from the prior year will also receive an invitation if they won either the Professional, Age Group, and Handcycle events.

The current Ironman course record is 8hrs, 3 minutes and 56 seconds which was set by the Australian Craig Alexander. The ladies record is held by Swiss athlete Daniela Ryf which she set in 2016 at 8hrs, 46 minutes and 46 seconds.Last year Jan Frodeno from Germany won the Gold a repeat of his victory in 2015. In fact in 2016 Germany took a clean sheet of Gold, Silver and Bronze and highlighted the modern German dominance of men’s triathlon events. Previous to that for the main Australia has dominated the men’s event in the 2000’s, whilst Great Britain’s ladies have been highly dominant in the same period.Up to 2015, athletes could actually enter a $50 lottery to enter the Ironman World Championships but this is no longer the case due to legal implications over charging money for a lottery. Since its inception the USA has won the Men’s Championship 20 times, Australia 7, Germany 7 and Belgium and Canada 3 each. In the Ladies competition the USA have 10 wins, Switzerland 8, 5 a piece for the UK, Canada and Zimbabwe, 4 for Australia and New Zealand 2. Although this may seem like a USA landslide, it should be noted for the first 6 Championships only the USA took part. Since then other nations have gradually had success and now it is truly a worldwide competition. Outside of the World Ironman Championship there are other triathlons that appear on many athletes Bucket List: Escape From Alcatraz - situated in San Francisco Bay is an iconic race that commences with the competitors jumping off the Francisco Belle Ferry into the icy waters near Alcatraz Island. This is followed by a one and a half mile swim in 55 degree waters, followed by a short run and an 18 mile cycle before a final road race of 8 miles through Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Challenge Roth - is the fastest iron-distance course in the world. The main swim takes place in the Main-Donau Canal and is followed by 112 mile bike ride and and marathon around the tiny German town of Roth. The support is fanatical for this race and an estimated 220,000 fans attend the event. Wildflower - situated roughly 20 miles from the Central Coast of California in the small town of Bradley is the famous Wildflower Race. This is one of the longest run triathlons on the circuit and begins with a swim in Lake San Antonio. The run is particularly tough with 60% off road and on trails. Wildflower is nicknamed the Woodstock of triathlons as it has a very laid back experience and has a festival feel to the whole affair. These other triathlons rank among the best in the world, but there is only one true World Ironman Championship, and that takes place later on in the year in Hawaii in October. It might be a bit late to train for the 2017 competition, but you could always start to prepare for next year’s event !

Course Conditions Promote Big Scores

By Jeff Wylie

G

olfers awoke Tuesday morning to light drizzle and grey skies, with the possibility of a wet day of golf. Early tee-off groups of the 106 players including 12 Ladies, may have had to deal with some light rain for a few holes, but from 8:00am on perfect conditions were the order of the day. With the overnight rain, it was decided to play lift, clean & place on the closely mown surfaces, to avoid mud balls following good shots. There were a host of exceptional performances, so difficult to single out a star player of the day with several nominees:

Top points score of the day came from the B Flight for handicaps 14 - 19, with John Sherriff (18) signing for a spectacular 47 points. A series of countbacks was required to separate 5 players on 41 points for the minor placings. Mikael Andersson (19) beat Fred May (16) after both had 21 on the back 9, while John Pierrel, Tom Thompson & Steve Atkins were the unlucky players. No countbacks required in A Flt for handicaps up to 13, as Bob Watson (7) made a return to form shooting par 72 to sign for 43 points, while Myles Knowlson (13) got 2nd spot with 41, and a point further back was Manny Defteros (13). C Flight for handicaps 20> winner Sami Sarajavi (21) was well clear of his nearest rival, John Seton (23) who had 40 points, while the bronze position went to Roy Steinbach (25) with 39 points. Ladies division was a hotly contested affair with 3 players on 44 points, Nat Rukkid (13) with 25 points on the back 9, which included an eagle & a birdie saw her get the top spot ahead of Supranne Dokkhaoram (35) who had 24 on the back 9, to edge out the unlucky Yurie Murakami who had to be satisfied with the Ladies long drive on 18. Many outstanding performances of the day, including Todd Doss shooting 69 to win the Low Gross to go with his 2 technical prizes. Bob Watson, Myles Knowlson, Sami Sarajavi & Nat Rukkid getting a technical prize to go with their placing, while Hannu Simmonen & Keith (Kissy) Buchanan both had Eagles on hole #8. Hannu & Peter Kesby each getting the maximum of 2 technical prizes. All in all, some outstanding golf over the day, followed by Dave & his crew doing a tip top job in the tucker department, well done & a big thanks to all. We can all look forward to many more successful tournaments. Contact Shane on 0863720084 or go to Birdie at www.birdie.in.th to ensure your preferred tee time.

would rather write about sitting and relaxing by a lake fishing into a beautiful evening with fish rising all around and a bite on my rod every 5 minutes (and a cold can of beer) but it’s Thai Culture we need to look at this edition. For nearly 2000 years Thailand and the surrounding Asian countries have fished and sustained supplies of marine life in their waters. Even today we see small pockets of anglers on lakesides catching to ensure families are fed. It’s easy to think that there are sustainable supplies in all these lakes but if it wasn’t for the culture of these people then marine life would become extinct in an over demanding market place. Inland fisheries in Thailand have long been a part of Thai culture. It is an open access resource for animal protein for the Thai rural population. Rivers and their tributaries, floodplains, lakes, swamps and reservoirs throughout the country are important for inland fisheries. The inland catch composition includes local carp, catfish, snakehead fish, gourami, shrimp and others. Despite widespread constraints due to habitat degradation and increased pollution from industrial wastes, inland capture fisheries production has continued to increase. This is due to rehabilitation efforts and fish re-stocking programmes to augment freshwater fish resources in public waters. The draconian fishing gear commonly used for catching inland fish includes gill nets, longlines, hook-and-line, scoop nets, cast nets and lift nets. I remember watching the cages being emptied just above the famous Ridge Pool in Ballina Co Mayo and thinking what chance was there for Atlantic salmon to escape the mass capture ? These Kings of the river had to get through drift nets at the mouth of the river Moy and fight their way past the cages to their breeding grounds. When the Dept. of Fisheries got the nets and cages banned in Ireland, tourism and visitors to the area rose dramatically, which in turn brought far more to the coffers of local businesses. I have written before about how, in many of the lakes surrounding Chonburi the locals will say prayers and offer live fish into the ecosystem. Unfortunately there are not enough of these acts going on although they are trying…. I must say that Thailand has undertaken concrete efforts in this regard. For marine and coastal fisheries there is now management of the rehabilitation of fisheries’ resources whilst the reduction of excessive fishing and minimizing of by-catch are being implemented. Measurements introduced include banning of certain fishing gear, restricting fishing seasons and areas, increasing artificial fish spawning and nursing grounds, prohibiting destructive fishing practices, reducing excess fishing capacity, regulating mesh sizes, introducing responsible fishing operations, improving post-harvest technology and strengthening institutional legal and financial frameworks….. The issue is how do they police all these measures ? – Not well enough methinks. On the whole it is heart-warming to see locals re-stocking off their own backs and because of Thai culture and tradition. However at some level it would be a good idea if this selfpolicing were to be monitored - not like some of the bars and restaurants whose culture is to put up prices when there is less business ….That kind of practice just doesn’t work

On a happier cultural note: A woman wakes during the night to find that her husband is not in their bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him and finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him. He appears deep in thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of coffee. "What's the matter, dear?" she whispers as she steps into the room, "Why are you down here at this time of night?" “Do you remember when I met you and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly. The wife is touched to tears thinking that her husband is so caring and sensitive. "Yes, I do" she replies. The husband pauses. The words are not coming easily. "Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?" "Yes, I remember" says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues... "Do you remember when he shoved a shotgun in my face and said, "Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years?'" "I remember that too" she replies softly. He wipes another tear from his cheek and says... "I would have gotten out today." ! Tight Lines Everybody and remember you can always escape by sinking a line on the lake.

Double Delight for the Danish Dynamo Unixx – TR-Motorsport Racing Team,Thailand Super Series Rounds 5 & 6 – Chang International Circuit Buriram “If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough.” - Mario Andretti Thomas Raldorf and the #29 Porsche 997 followed up their sensational weekend In Bang Saen with another two commanding victories in the hot and humid Buriram, Thailand. The weekend began with Thomas topping the tables in P1 and from then on never looked back, topping the further practice sessions by a considerable margin. During the final practice session, Thomas advised his pit team to make an adjustment to the wheels to try and squeeze out a few more tenths in preparation for qualifying. His decision proved a masterstroke as he recorded a new personal best of 1.44.607 around the 4.5km circuit. As it is currently wet season here in Thailand the rain played its part with qualifying being cancelled resulting in the grids being formed by the fastest and second fastest times in Free Practice putting Thomas firmly in Pole Position for Races 1 & 2.

Race 1 As the lights went out Thomas made his trademark perfect start leaving the other cars to fight other the minor places, within a few laps a sizable lead had grown due to the ensuing battle behind for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. This allowed Thomas to pull even further ahead and strolling to the chequered flag with a gap of eight seconds to the chasing pack. Title rival Khun Manat finished 2nd while UNIXX – TR Motorsport Team Mate Khun Pete finished a very respectable 3rd in the Porsche Cayman.

Race 2 The race started in much the same way as the previous day’s, with Thomas pulling away early, while the other drivers fought amongst themselves for position. Thomas lit up the track and the timing screens with four blistering laps at qualifying pace to further increase his lead. He further controlled his

lead right to the end although a threat did come in the shape of the Rotary Mazda driven by young James Runacres who was catching the 997 but eventually run out of laps and finished four seconds behind Thomas. Team mate Khun Pete in the JWD Cayman Porsche enjoyed a see-saw battle with Khun Manat in the Toyota all throughout the race eventually finishing 4th and helping strengthen the grip on the Team Championship Trophy.

Standings The team are now well placed in both championships, the double win from Thomas sees him lead the driver’s championship for the first time this year with a gap of 11 points to Khun Manat. While in the team championship the lead is a very healthy 45 points to Team Toyota. Due to the ease of both the teams’ victories extra weight has now been added to the Porsche. The car is already carrying the maximum allowed success ballast of 50kg, however, the governing body of the Thailand Super Series has deemed it necessary to add a further 30kg ballast under the regulation ‘Balance of Performance’ although the difference in lap times between Thomas and the other leading drivers is marginal the organisers wish to make the final races a closer battle. The extra 30kg will have a massive effect on the car from acceleration, braking to the overall handling around the circuit. With this in mind, the Team is flying in veteran Race Engineer Peter Jaeger from Denmark AKA Master Yoda. Peter will have to use all of his Jedi Mind Force tricks to try and squeeze out a few more tenths around the Buriram circuit to compensate for the massive weight disadvantage. It promises to be a very intriguing final weekend. MEDICAL INSURANCE hen people come and live in Thailand one of the things that is often neglected is medical insurance. In their home country they are so used to rolling up at their doctor or hospital and not having to pay anything out of their own pocket

Thailand is different. If you do not have medical insurance you will have to pay for treatment out of your own pocket. If you have neither any treatment needed will be withheld. The situation has got so bad the several of the Embassies have issued warnings about people being underinsured or not insured. I quote from the British Embassy warning of 1st February 2016: “Based on British Embassy figures in 2015, more than 80% of British residents in Thailand over the age of 51 who received consular assistance after being hospitalised did not have medical insurance, despite the relatively common need for medical care” Layla Slater MBE, HM Consul to Thailand said: “ Thailand is one of the top tourist and retirement destinations. Medical treatment can cost thousands of pounds and returning home may not be an option for everyone.. In many cases there will be a direct financial impact on family and friends. The British Embassy endeavours to work with charitable organisations and do everything we can to help people, but we cannot pay medical bills or fly people home. That is why we encourage people to make provision for their health and medical needs when choosing to live abroad, as it is the most reliable way to ensure that costs are covered” Whatever nationality you are it is essential that you have medical insurance. Unfortunately many people think “It will never happen to me”. However it does to a surprisingly high number of people. I have known of instances where treatment has cost over $100000. It is quite common if someone has been in an accident for the total cost to exceed $50000. When you consider that Thailand has the second highest death rates on the roads in the world and there are uninsured drivers everywhere accidents are a very common occurrence. You can obtain local medical insurance that can work out relatively cost effective or you might want to choose full international cover which costs more but has more extensive cover. Whatever your needs I recommend you get in touch with us as we can offer free impartial advice as well as being able to give the very best in quotes.

BUSINESS NEWS By Magna Carta Law Office

Benefits of a Prenuptial Agreement A prenuptial agreement is a written contract between two people in anticipation of marriage. It normally lists all of the assets each person owns, specifies the rights and obligations of the parties, how finances will be managed during the course of marriage, and specifies what each person's property rights will be if the marriage is terminated either by death, divorce or cancelled by court. These agreements are fairly common and essential if either or both parties have substantial assets, valuables, stocks, inheritances, bonds or collectibles that he or she wants to keep as separate property; and both parties want to clarify financial obligations to a parent or a child from a previous marriage. Potential Benefits of Signing a Prenuptial Agreement • Assurance A prenuptial agreement sets the financial arrangements and agreements between couples before marriage. Future concerns about money, work, children, home, and any other mutual issues can be discussed openly. By setting forth a formal agreement, both parties will be assured that their valuables will be disposed of according to their intentions and both will be aware on what to anticipate in the event of dissolution of marriage. • Preserve Premarital Property and Financial Assets Both parties can retain personal properties and financial assets they owned prior to marriage which can prevent disputes over property in the future. • Debt Protection This is essential if one spouse shall bring extensive debts into their marriage which may result to conflict. Under Thai law, this agreement can be used to protect assets of the other spouse

www.pattayatrader.com

from being used or seized to satisfy all those debts incurred before the marriage. Without it, your future spouse's liability and negative credit history can become your own and creditors can go after the marital property even though only one spouse is the debtor. • Protecting Family Business Prenuptial agreement keeps control and protects ownership of assets, finances and properties belonging to a family business. In the absence of a premarital agreement, a court could award some of your ownership rights in a family business to your partner that can lead to a potentially difficult situation in case the marriage fails. • Protecting Family Members This is often used to designate responsibility and to protect the interests of children from a prior or upcoming marriage. You can ensure that your children receive what you want them to have in the event of separation. • Protecting Family Heirlooms Heirloom could be anything valuable passed down from generations to its family members. A prenuptial agreement can ensure that family heirlooms are kept out of the marital estate as this is important when there are children from a prior marriage or other relatives for whom they are intended. • Minimizing Divorce Acrimony and Costs Divorce may be far less expensive if the spouses’ respective rights are arranged and there is less stress and bitterness and less to fight about upon a divorce procedure.

The Best Money Saving Tips or

how to be king of the Cheapskates. If you strive to live here on next to nothing, an increasing difficult task, you should love this article !

Use Smart Strips

One good way to save money each month is to revamp your energy usage. Experts point out that a smart strip can save from $20 to more than $60 a year, depending on your energy usage and your set up. Consider plugging electronics and other “energy vampires” into smart strips. You can cut the items off from the outlet, putting a stop to energy leaks that occur even when you push the “off” button. I split the difference in estimates and say the average person can save about $40 a year using smart strips.

Cancel Subscriptions

Search the Internet for Promo Codes

Depending on what you buy and where you buy it online, promo codes found all over the web can save you between $3 and $20 an order. There are numerous web sites that can help you find promo codes that save you between 5% and 20% on various items. Take a few minutes to search for “promo codes” (along with the name of the business you are buying from) before you check out. You could save $75 a year for almost no work. There are also plenty of low season deals available around town so keep your eyes peeled for those deals.

Do you need all those subscriptions? How much are you paying for something you may not necessarily use. Do you really need that subscription to Apple Music or Spotify? Cutting a $10 monthly subscription can save you $120 a year. Even a cheaper subscription of $3 a month adds up to $36. Add up all your subscriptions, and there is a good chance you can save $100. It is a good way to stop a money leak.

Be Store Smart

Look at your membership costs

Use Smaller Amounts of Product than Recommended

Are you spending money on unnecessary memberships? One of the biggest offenders is the gym membership simply because many people get a membership and then don’t use it. I personally LOVE gym memberships because of what they can do for your health and wealth and many gyms here in Pattaya can offer varying package rates to suit you Daily, weekly, monthly, annual or even lifetime so check what is best for you.

Avoid Bank Charges and Penalty Fees

48 48

nied. That can be a real wake up call to pay more attention to your spending habits.

Banks throughout the world rack up billions in fees and penalties for overdrafts, late payments on credit cards and ATM charges can add up. On average, you can save $60 each year by simply being responsible. Track your spending, and make sure you know how much money you have in the bank, and how high your credit card balance is. You can also reject standard overdraft services so that, instead of waving through some of your purchases, you are de-

PATTAYA TRADER

As you shop, make sure to pay attention to prices and scanners. Know what you are paying – and be sure to point out discrepancies between the marked price and what rings up. I save money regularly simply by paying attention to marked prices and watching the register read out. Between being smart about the store and knowing the law, you can save about $100 a year. Stay on your toes.

Do you really need to squeeze so much toothpaste onto your toothbrush? How much shampoo do you truly need – especially if your hair is short? The answer: Probably not as much as the package recommends. Save money on soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener, shampoo, and other products by using less than the recommended amount.

Line Dry Your Clothes

You might be surprised at how much money you can save – especially in electricity – by line drying your clothes.Line drying is fairly simple: Once you get the hang of it (see what I did there?), it only takes a few minutes to put your clothes out and then a few more minutes to take them down. Plus, they smell outdoor-fresh. If you spend an hour a month (two to three loads) you can save close to $120 a year. david.thrifty@yahoo.com
