By B.S.

Mastering the Mind through Meditation Buddha observed that all human beings sought happiness. He also couldn’t help but notice that nearly every human failed to achieve any kind of lasting contentment. Out of compassion, he invited all to investigate his teachings. All of which were devised to help one develop the mind, through various methods, in the hope of finding true nirvana – the highest and most perfect peace. The most powerful of those methods was that of meditation, which is taking responsibility of one’s own mind and changing it for the better. According to both Buddha and Buddhism, meditation was the only real antidote to mitigate personal sorrow, anxiety, fear, hatred, regret or any of the other negative emotions which prevented ‘sentient’ or thinking beings from being at peace. Meditation is thought to be the best means by which one can transform his or her mind from hateful to harmonious. This can be achieved by practicing meditation techniques that develop concentration, create clarity of thought, instill calmness, and breed a more positive way in which to view all things. It is said that through regular sessions of meditation it is possible to learn the patterns and ways of one’s own mind. Once the ways of your mind are mastered, it is then possible to alter or change the patterns in which it ponders, to cultivate a more positive outlook on all aspects of one’s being.

Bending the Brain The human mind has been likened to that of a wild stallion, rebellious, full of energy, and impossible to control. So how does one alter an unmanageable mind to the point where it can remain focused and not wander off to the next random thought? Once again, the answer is through meditation and the stilling or slowing down of the mind’s thought process. Apparently the trick to successful meditation is not to prevent the mind from thinking but rather to focus its thoughts on something that is agreeable or pleasant. In other words, conjure up something in which the mind can be completely immersed and not easily distracted. With patience and perseverance, the result of regular meditation is said to lead to a more peaceful, creative and positive state of mind. In fact, science tells us that brain waves are actually changed during meditation. This change restructures the neurons through which all thought is transformed into action – the result being a better functioning brain. A more focused mind, more insightful ways in which to solve problems and reduced stress, and perhaps a path that leads to a better and more meaningful way of life.

A Mindful Retreat In the Kingdom of Thailand, Buddhism has played a significant role in the Siamese way of life for over a thousand years. The wat, (the Buddhist temple)is the epicenter of all things Buddhist. It is where Thais gather to worship and hear sermons and where they go for sage advice on family matters. It is also a learning center for children, a repository for folk medicine and its lore, and a place of meditation. It is to the wat where Thais travel to modify their minds by way of meditation. Many of Thailand’s temples offer courses, classes, and extended retreats in which the art of mastering the mind is instructed. One need not be a Buddhist to participate and foreigners are welcomed with a smile. Buddha’s teachings are thought to be priceless so no monetary remuneration is expected for a few hours of insight on the methods of meditation, although donations are gratefully accepted. Depending on the customs of the Thai wat or meditation center, the manner of instruction, available programs, and the learning environment will differ … some drastically. At many wats meditation is a group activity whilst others allow individuals to create and follow their own schedules. If your goal is to ease the brain’s burden, improve concentration, mentally sharpen your athletic ability, or simply transform your mind from tortured to tranquil, then why not treat yourself to a reflective retreat at one of Thailand’s numerous wats or meditation centers.

The fitness industry has, from the beginning, embraced all the advantages technology and the new wave of mobile devices has to offer. From apps that track your workouts to entire worldwide communities that spill over with useful advice and tips on how to improve your body, getting fitter has always been a strong interest in the app and mobile development world. It has never been easier to organize your diet, schedule your routine and track your workout time. The apps we will be looking at today are some of the most recent examples of the diverse ways in which technology is helping us all become stronger, faster and fitter.

Nike+Run Well of course, I don’t think we can start this article without mentioning the biggest shoe retailer’s take on the whole running movement. In their own words: “The Nike+ Running App tracks your runs and helps you reach your goals -- whether it’s running your first race, or setting a new personal record. From first-time runners to marathon veterans, you'll get the measurement and motivation you need to run farther and faster than ever before. Welcome to the world’s greatest running community.” You do have to give Nike some credit for this app . The fact that it has received 241,941 positive reviews on the google app store alone makes it one of the most popular apps available for making us all healthier. You can challenge yourself against the community (by participating in their daily challenge runs) join communal runs (so that you can find a running buddy right where you live),constantly track your performance (thanks to the seamless integration with your Nike shoes) and track your improvements based on real data. These are just a few of the reason the app is so popular! ** check out Nike+Run Thailand www.nike.com/th So yes, after buying your new Nike shoes just head to either the Apple or Google app store, download Nike+Run and get moving!

FitStar Personal Trainer: “Inspiring people to live healthier lives” A bit too short on cash this month to afford a personal trainer? No problem. FitStar personal trainer assesses your needs and fitness level by asking you a simple set of questions at the end of every workout. That way every workout is challenging but doesn’t discourage or destroy you. And the program's offerings are a good fit for beginners through to fitness fanatics—after all, it was created by former NFL star Tony Gonzalez. It’s free and readily available at the iOs app store, what better time to get fit than right now eh?

Cody It’s never a good thing to feel alone when you’re trying to get fit. You will always have questions, require constant feedback and encouragement in order to keep strong on the path to improvement and a healthy body. Finding the perfect gym buddy can sometimes be a difficult thing. The next app helps you deal with that by providing you with a receptive community that is always ready to help you get better. Cody is like Facebook for fitness. This app offers users inside connections to a fitness community where they can share and complete workouts by following new and old friends. This app allows people to track their own progress through a timeline and other users can like and comment on your daily workout activity. Best part? The community is both active and growing at a healthy rate so you can find new workouts, courses, tips, advice and resources being shared constantly 24/7. As of now, Cody has 6 categories organizing all it’s resources, these include: Yoga, fitness, learning new moves, strength, flexibility and weight-loss. So, all you gym goers who like to videotape each other working out daily can now congregate, share and learn! You can even purchase professional training courses directly from the community’s trainers which means that there is a constant influx of high-quality content for those looking for top expert advice.

Spring

Because no workout is never complete without the perfect playlist or just because it has been proven that a good set of tunes will allow you to work out faster, stronger, and longer (15% increase according to studies conducted by the university of Brunel London). Spring is an app that builds off that simple principle. DJs curate playlists with songs that have a similar range of beats per minute. All you have to do is run to the beat of the music. Your workout will be done before you know it, and you might even discover a new favorite song. Once again, this app is (for now at least) only available for Apple devices at it’s official store, it’s free to download so your wallet is not at risk of any damage here. Just Google the term ‘spring music app’ and you are set, enjoy!

Just Google the term ‘spring music app’ and you are set, enjoy! Fitbit, a healthy piece of hardware that should be mentioned As you may have noticed, I did spend most of the article talking about software apps, it seemed like the right time to at least mention one wearable piece of hardware that also attempts to keep us in top shape: Fitbit. As part of the new (and trendy!) wave of smart wearables (which look pretty much like watches ) the Fitbit products are some of the most popular on the market. They offer a lot of functionality and allow active fitness users a way to track a huge number of variables, - data which can then be used to improve performance. One thing you will quickly notice when you enter the official website www.fitbit.com, is that you have a lot of choice. Wearable products from the Fitbit family range include different models of wearable trackers that will measure (and faithfully report) on variable data such as the distance you have walked, the number of steps you have climbed and even the number of hours you have slept. The most advanced models (the ‘Performance Fitness Products’ ) will measure all those factors plus additional functions such as heart rate tracking, music control and the ability to sync with your phone for call id displaying.

In Conclusion: One of the most commonly perceived negative effects of the internet age (or of technology in general ) is that it encourages a sedentary, lazy lifestyle. So it’s certainly encouraging to be reminded of the new advancements that actually help us improve our lifestyle by encouraging, educating and tracking our commitment to a workout routine. Don’t forget, this is just the beginning. Before you realize it you will have a personal drone or robot following you around, ensuring you eat and exercise properly. Until then, it’s certainly reassuring to know these apps and devices have our backs on our road to a healthy body and a strong mind.

Pig in Wings

by Matias Berra

Well this month it seems like I got lucky, all of the sudden the responsibility of picking an attraction to write about has fallen on my shoulders! I figured sneaking an article in about some of the awesome places I like to hang out at didn’t seem like much of an undertaking, after all. It was Tuesday and II was going to visit my good friend Kris that night anyway at ‘The Pig’ ( “Pig in Wings” to be specific)… so there was an article in the making. Before we get too deep into just how great this place is let me give you an overview of what makes this bar/ guest-house/ international hang-out, my weapon of choice when needing to kill time, neurons or the weekly blues. Sure, it is another bar in Thailand, but if there’s one thing you learn as you grow older it is that the people, the conversations and the music give you that warm feeling inside that keeps you coming for more. Do let emphasize this, If there’s one thing this place has it’s character… they do also have shots of Jack in case that’s not doing it for you, don’t worry buddy, you are at The PIG now!

The Drinks are always cold: Not going to surprise you too much saying they have all your Pattaya standard beverages, because they do, but I will go right ahead and comfort you by sharing the PIG’s tyrannic ‘Cold Beers for All’ moto (CBA for short) .As far as drink specials go, try the PIGs brew. It might taste like tea, but trust me on this one (and my girlfriend for that matter) their most delicious and refreshing cocktail contains a surprisingly intoxicating amount of Absolute.

The Food it’s all about the special occasions: It’s low season now guys, kitchen’s closed! That said, do follow the PIG’s Facebook Page (search the omnipresent Facebook for the phrase “Pig In Wings”) and you can see what’s coming up. Over the past month or so there has been a 4th of July BBQ, some birthday parties, random get togethers and the occasional “Beerpong Tournament”, Keep an eye out for then - I’m sure you will see something you like.

The Ring always awaits... Ok you might like to play pool, you might enjoy a good game of darts, but let me tell you you have never experienced a real bar game until you have faced The Ring.

The rules: • Get the Ring • Throw it and try to hook it… on the hook. • If you get it you make everyone else drink. Keep in mind appearances are tricky, sure, the entire game does consist of a board, a hook, and a ring attached to the ceiling by a string… but the real power only resides with the person that can control the ring, and it get’s easier every time you have a beer (I think)! I won’t get too deep into The Ring game as this articles is starting to sound like a passage from Gollum’s diary, but I am rather surprised how such a simple invention can be so much fun for so many people. The choice to face the ring is now yours...

It’s all about the People, yo! What else could be the jewel of any attraction? The amount of cool people I have met at the PIG is truly outstanding, from producers, DJ, photographers and artists to an argentine couple traveling the world on motorbikes. The PIG is just a great place to go see what kind of interesting human beings you can meet. You will definitely find Kris and his family there, get a beer, play some ring, ask what’s happening and have a couple of good conversations, - then who knows? We might even meet there tonight, it’s another day in Pattaya after all!

BREAKING NOT BAD IN BALI

Y

ou’ve seen movies like Blue Crush and Point Break, and you’d like to try riding few waves - and where better to learn to surf than in Bali?

An Englishman once speculated, as only an Englishman might, that “surfing must be like having a cup of tea with God.” Which only proves that when you're deep in the belly of a tubing wave, words don't count for much. Lost for words you might be but in Bali, almost never for waves. At any time of year you’ll find surfers flinging their bodies, surfboards, skis, malibus, bodyboards and stand-up paddle boards onto anything in Bali that resembles a swell. For some beginners, bodysurfing with swim fins will be thrill enough. Otherwise, consider starting on a bellyboard instead of a hard, fibreglass surfboard. If you have the time and determination to learn to ride a surfboard — preferably a soft-bodied one at first — it’s important to get instruction on the basics. There are plenty of surf schools along the fabled, crowded sands that stretch from Kuta to Legian to Seminyak. Sign up for a day or so. Please note: this won’t teach you how to surf. It teaches you how to stand on a surfboard for about 20 seconds, riding a broken wave. Learning to surf properly will take a year. A few cruel tips. Other surfers loathe beginners. Even last week’s beginners look down on this week’s crop. As a newbie, you’ll be told where to go — in very robust language — should you "drop in" on another surfer who’s already riding a wave. Always stay clear of other riders when they're on a wave. If the abuse doesn't puncture your ego, consider your body being impaled by a hard, sharp, fast-moving surfboard. It happens, it damages. In general, find some small, broken waves, well away from the main pack of surfers and also away from rips. That’s your sandpit for practice. And stay clear the general swimming area. (Swimmers like to dislike you, too.) Surf in the company (but not in the way) of other board riders, and be very cautious of the water if it looks too rough. Most Bali beaches do not have lifeguards such as those found in Australia or California,

but they do have rips and sets of large waves. If the Kuta to Seminyak beach circus is too crowded, consider a Surfari to other Bali breaks, although not all of them will have beginner-friendly waves. (The barrelling reef breaks of the southern Bukit Peninsula, for instance, are no place for learners.) Here are some possibilities: Canggu. A few kilometres north west along the same shore from Kuta you’ll find the village of Canggu. (It’s pronounced Changgoo — or now, “Chang-gone” because of its increasing development.) In recent years resorts have gobbled up the rice fields and Canggu’s restaurants are fast becoming the new place to be “seen” for those who fear invisibility. But the surf still whomps! There are numerous breaks around the end-of-the-road spot known as Echo Beach, with both left- and right-hand breaking waves over reefs and sand bottoms. There can be something for almost everyone, although you should not underestimate the hefty punch of these waves. Like many places, early mornings deliver the best conditions as well thinner crowds. Balian. Drive further west for an hour and a half (traffic jams permitting) on the narrow trunk road that heads to Java. You’ll run the gauntlet of motorcycles, geese, temple processions, buses, giant trucks and handcarts. Surviving that, you welcome the turn-off sign to the tranquil river-mouth village of Balian. It’s a surfing-oriented community but lacks the bogan groups and jagged-edge night vibe of Kuta. Here you’re right back in rural Bali, with black sand beaches, driftwood days and gado-gado for breakfast. The surf is a long, rolling left, plus a steeper right, breaking far out in front of a river mouth. The paddle can be long but the crowds aren’t too dense and the vibe is friendly. Medewi. Continue west from Balian on the same highway for another half hour — you’re now about 80 km from Kuta — and you reach Medewi (“Meh-day-we”). The surf here is a long, easy, left-hand point break that's popular but still less crowded than KutaLegian. Far down the line on this wave is a good place for “L-plate” surfers, as long as they don’t drop in. The point works in both the wet and dry seasons but gets busy on the weekends with plenty of keen locals, as well as visiting surfers. Medewi’s volcanic sand beach is nothing special but there are small cafes and hotels. Nusa Lembongan. If there just isn’t enough room on Bali for you and its seven million annual visitors, head to Benoa harbour and catch a ride over to Nusa Lembongan. This small island 20 km east of Bali has snoozy villages, good accommodation and the occasional cockfight (one visit is enough). There’s excellent scuba diving and consistent reef surf. Among the best-known waves are Playgrounds (as the name suggests, a good wave for intermediate surfers) and the shallow, razor-sharp thrills of Lacerations (it was named by accident — many of them). The most popular wave is a fast, right-hand reef break called Shipwrecks, which can get very busy.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner There are also different ways to get energy while running. Some of my friends only eat fruit while they are running while others bulk up with pizza and pasta for a couple of days before a long run. From 2013-2015 there has been a popular trend for running even if biking have won over some of these people now there are still many people running like crazy! In bangkok there is a running event almost every weekend and most of the runs are sold out on the first day. Sadly some people do not even go to the runs to run. They go to take photos, chat and dress in funny costumes especially as everybody gets a medal even if they do not run that much.

This is not a review of the famous film with Tom Courtenay. Instead, and following on from the recent Kings Cup Marathon in Pattaya and the Run For Mom ½ Marathon in Bangkok last month in honour of her majesty Queen Sirikit, some thoughts from Pattaya’s own “long distance runner” Neo of Green Pattaya: I started running just a few years ago and after just one year ran from Chiang Rai up on the Northern border of Thailand down to Pattaya 999 kilometers. It took 30 days 33.33 kilometer per day. Noone should ever tell you that you can not run or that it is too late to start. Some people believe we are born to run and that our current culture is making us weak. The most famous people who use running as a means of transport are not African but the Tarahumara: Native Indians, famous for their ability to run for days. So how can you prepare for a marathon if you’ve not started to run yet? When I started running I ran 1.2 km around the big Buddha temple and I was totally beat. After a week I added two laps and then another and then another and then I was suddenly doing 5 km a day. Your body will adjust to your running needs even if you do not see the same result as in a gym lifting weights, you will feel it inside your body. The expert say that you should add 1 km a week to build up your body strength. So if you want to run a marathon starting your preparations just a month before will not give you enough time. You are far better off starting your preparations at least 6 months before the start of the marathon and as you slowly build your stamina do not stop when you get to 5km but continue to push your body for longer distances.

It is all in good fun and part of the Thai running culture but unfortunately many real runners get left out because it is hard to book a place on the Thai websites especially for non Thai Speakers who also find it almost impossible to know when to pick up the shirt or where the real start is . Also in the past year or so there have been a few examples of foreigners complaining of being overcharged or denied the prizes they won. But if you do not care about the medals just run for fun. There is also Trail Running where you run in forests or fields or even in a few places in Pattaya. There are now many new cool apps such as Strava, Runkeeper and Charity Miles (where you give automatic to charity when you run or ride a bike). There is a very good running group called Bangkok Runners on Facebook and despite their name, everybody are welcome. My next project is running from Pattaya to Phuket and then maybe if my body agrees running from the top of Thailand all the way down to the end of Thailand. You can follow my running on www.thailandrun. org or https://www.facebook.com/ ThailandRun

There are so many different running styles to choose and I have even seen some barefoot runners in the Pattaya marathon. However running barefoot takes time to perfect as the foot is put down in a completely different way.

U

nused to the premise of getting something for nothing how lovely to see a free exercise park offered right here in Pattaya and to feature it in the month’s Location Spotlight when the magazine focuses on Health and General Wellbeing. Centrally located in the Pratumnak area just by the Meteorological Society and down the road a little from the Royal Cliff Hotel and Peach Exhibition Centre, this park is available for all to use. Even for those of us who feel the need to start our exercise regime from the very early hours of the morning it opens at 4 AM ! Admittedly some of the yellow and mauve machines here could do with a little lick of paint but you cannot deny that the view across Pattaya bay is spectacular and also from this lofty space there is usually a cooling breeze and plenty of places to sit and relax when you need to take a break. Frequented by the old and young alike, Thais and Farangs there is always plenty of room and free machines to use. In fact when I visited the park (around 10 in the morning) there was nobody there - which may say something about how bad the general community is here in Pattaya. We should all be making use of these machines and getting ourselves just a little fitter and healthier. In fact the machines themselves are really quite brilliant and very “Green” in that no electricity is used to function them you just use the weight of your own body to strengthen the muscles and improve general

circulation. It's up to you how long or how often you go but obviously having this facility so central and available is great. There are a few machines here that you will recognise from visits to more established gyms versions of rowing machines, exercise bikes, cross trainers etc. Also some more reminiscent of school playgrounds for gentle exercise to swing the legs, twist the waist or raise the legs. Why not bring a pair of headphones to enjoy some of your favorite music for inspiration and motivation. Perhaps some fast tracks to keep you going or something more gentle for relaxation. Either way the addition of music is sure to help your overall mood and prevent the boredom that inevitably comes when exercising or certainly I find this. Also for sun lovers there is of course time the added bonus of getting quite a good colour from this vantage point but of course be careful use sun screen take some head cover and drink plenty of water.

Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal: “a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces.” In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function.

In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function. The Pattaya International Ladies Club was established in 1987 with a small group of 30 women and has now increased to a present-day membership of over 200 women of all ages, from 34 countries, and all walks of life. With the growth of PILC has come the opportunity to offer a wide range of activities and social events, and the ability to raise funds for charitable causes. PILC’s August luncheon was held at Bruno's Restaurant Thrappaya Road The President, Helle, welcomed 54 members and friends to a ‘waiter service’ luncheon. Bruno’s is, of course, a favourite restaurant of many of the PILC ladies. Bruno's staff, served some delicious food. That had all been pre-chosen from a ‘set menu’ offering a wide selection of dishes. The main course choices being John Dory Fish Fillet, Chicken Parmigiana and Pork Scaloppini. The food was delicious; very well presented and served with precision. The dining room was certainly very quiet whilst the ladies enjoyed their food and after the meal the members were informed that the owner of Bruno's had kindly offered a 10% discount to all PILC members showing their membership cards for future visits.

October's PILC Lunch will be on October 6th at Gian’s Restaurant, 306/89 Chateau Dale Plaza Thappraya Road Pattaya 20150 Registration from 11.00 am. Booking essential on lunchpilc@gmail.com and every month there is a new members coffee morning where you can go to find out more about the PILC:

This month we look at some great links for teaching English.

Websites and resources Years ago, teachers would have to sit down with a blank piece of paper and map out a lesson from scratch. There was no place to go for inspiration, no vast resources to draw on, no quick fix. Today, thanks to the internet, there is a lesson for every occasion. Not only that, there are plenty of forums so when Somchai falls asleep for the third lesson in a row, you have somewhere to offload your angst. Most schools will have internet access, many will have wifi in the staffroom and some may even have interactive whiteboards in the classroom where you can display your online dexterity. Below are some of the top websites for ESL teachers.

St Andrews students have, once again, achieved outstanding results at International Baccalaureate Diploma level with an incredible 100% pass rate compared to a world average of 79%. The majority of these students have now secured places at leading universities worldwide and are ready to start the next stage of their education.

SCHOOL & EDUCATION

ST ANDREWS STUDENTS ACHIEVE WORLD CLASS IB RESULTS

Most International schools offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme for students aged 16-18 years old. This rigorous programme allows students to study a broad range of subjects, keeping their options open for the future. In each subject students are awarded points from 1 (the lowest) to 7 (the highest) and these are accumulated to reach an overall score. The maximum number of points that students can achieve is 45, whilst the 2015 world average was 29.88 points. St. Andrews students however, performed far better than this achieving an average of 33.87 points, which compares favourably to larger selective schools in Bangkok. In addition, 43% of our students achieved the highest grades of six or seven compared to a world average of 28%. These results are even more impressive considering that St. Andrews is a non-selective school and students of all abilities follow the IB diploma. Whilst all IB students have achieved great success, special mention should be given to outstanding individual performances such as Tanoy Kanjanarat who achieved an incredible 41 points out of a possible 45 which places her in the top 3% of students in the World. She is now heading to Leeds University in the UK to study Chemical Engineering. In addition, Kitty Sompiyachoke achieved a Diploma Score 40 points which places her in the top 5% in the World. Mr Andy Emery- the IB coordinator at St. Andrews- said, “One of our many strengths at St. Andrews is the way we personalise students’ education to ensure that they make the right subject choices and receive quality one-to-one support from teachers. This coupled with dynamic teaching and learning ensures students make the most progress and achieve their best results.” The head of the secondary school Mr. Kevin McGee, who is obviously delighted with these results said, “I am so proud of all the teachers and students who have worked incredibly hard to achieve these fantastic results. This confirms why St. Andrews is the only school in the area that has been awarded a gold star outstanding status by a team of independent inspectors. Outstanding teaching and learning, outstanding care and support for our students and outstanding leadership and management leads to outstanding results at every level. “ Teachers have now said goodbye to the class of 2015, but they will always be welcome back to share their experiences and future success with the rest of the school. As former head girl Laura who is now off to University College London to study Human Sciences, said, “I am sincerely grateful to St Andrews in particular the collective hard work of all the teachers. Once at university I will miss the school and always remember it fondly.”

You’ve just won 20 million dollars on the lotto in your home country. Your head’s in a spin and it will probably take a month before it clears and you can think straight again. I’ve often thought that if it happened to me I could afford a month in the Chiva Som in Hua Hin.No Alcohol- just fresh orange juice every day and plenty of exercise. After four weeks of total abstinence and meditation (I would go alone) I think my mind and emotions would be in good shape to cope with being a multimillionaire and in a better position to avoid being a pauper in five years like so many lottery winners. If you did win you would probably go home to collect your cheque and then your problems would really start. If you did win you would probably go home to collect your cheque and then your problems would really start. Every financial adviser in your local town city or county would hunt you down to advise you what to do and where to invest your new found wealth.

it was good to be a member of this expensive club and go and invest with your new found friends. If you had spent the month at the Chiva Som you might be thinking just that little clearer and think perhaps that a second opinion might be helpful. It would take a strong will and an even stronger personality to reject people who consider themselves to be the experts. .

The first to get at you would probably be the investment bankers recommended by the lottery company. I’m sure that you would be impressed by the expensive Italian suits, expensive hand made briefcases, expensive Harvard accents and expensive Financial Risk Management PHD’S and even the coffee served in expensive china cups on expensive silver trays in an expensive carpeted office. Who do you think pays for all that expense? The claustrophobic expensive bubble environment would get to the most level headed and many would feel that

own interests ahead of client’s interests do nothing to instill confidence in these institutions.

Too many clients come to Investment Managers and say in almost helpless terms “You know so much, you are so well informed, you should decide. Please tell us what we should do”

If I suddenly won the lottery or inherited a substantial sum the first place I would look for advice would be the broker that had handled my financial affairs for the past ten or fifteen years to my satisfaction. Of course there are crooks in every area of financial services and there always will be. I have written many times in this column about how to avoid these people and what precautions to take with your money and I do not want to go over that ground again here.

I like what Peter Bernstein says in his book “The portable MBA in Investment” “Too many clients come to Investment Managers and say in almost helpless terms “You know so much, you are so well informed, you should decide. Please tell us what we should do” These financial managers may indeed know much more than a given client about investing and the capital markets. But they know all too little of the unique needs of each individual client. Relying on a manager’s general knowledge leads to all clients getting the same asset mix in their funds. This is not my biggest concern however. If I had 10 million or 10 thousand to invest my concern would be with the integrity of the company I intended to do business with.

But a strong will is one of the characteristics you will need to maintain and increase your wealth.

Regarding my money, I always think about my objective. Is it to impress rich people in expensive offices or is it to protect and increase my capital? For further information on this or any area of financial services, please contact David at David.thrifty@yahoo.com

Recent big fines on Goldman Sachs for putting their own interests ahead of client’s interests do nothing to instill confidence in these institutions. I have no personal bone to pick with investment banks. They provide a great service for corporate clients despite the fact that on a monthly basis some new scandal about ripping off clients appears in the media. For example not long ago the US$100 million fine imposed on Merrill Lynch, one of the largest investment banks in the world, was considered small beer for a serious due diligence infraction and was a lesson for me.Recent big fines on Goldman Sachs for putting their

A cozy restaurant that is open to “Suggestions” Upon driving into the large car park off Soi Nerbplubwan, Mabyailia 28 there stands an orange house, which is quite easy to find, if you know what you’re looking for.The sign stated, “Suggestions Cozy Restaurant” so I knew I had the right location but harder to find was the front doorway, that’s because it’s at the rear of the property.I felt a little bit like a burglar casing out the joint as I crept around the rear of the property but luckily enough I found the entrance, before the boys in light brown (The Cops) arrested me! The restaurant immediately lived up to its Cozy status as we were warmly greeted by two service staff, who seated us near the window.Upon ordering drinks a delicious pate of chicken liver and warm bread was brought to the table. So we browsed the menu whilst waiting for our drinks and devouring the pate, but what really jumped out at me was the specials board, which featured Ostrich, Venison, Seabass and Australian rack of Lamb. Apparently the special boards change regularly due to which produce is or isn’t in season at the moment, plus it also gives regular diners something different to try from the menu every time they visit. There is nothing worse than knowing a menu off by heart and we all like a little surprise or something different every now and then. - They do say “variety is the spice of life” ! The drinks arrived promptly and our orders were taken, there were four of us in total as we were celebrating a dear friend’s birthday. Happy Birthday Krissy My Love ! Myself and my better half, opted for the avocado & crab salad for starters, the birthday girl chose Bruschetta with Parma Ham, whilst her worst half Adrian ordered the avocado, shrimp, crab & smoked salmon salad which was enormous. Basically it was a main course as it came with French fries, so maybe we ordered wrong, but who cares, we polished it all off in no time. The avocado was really good, certainly worth going back for on its own, but next time I would opt for avocado with shrimps as they looked really fresh and Adrian confirmed they were delicious, but he wasn’t prepared to share, not even a little taste ! The Flemish head chef and owner Edwin came out to speak with us, a pleasant fellow who attended culinary school in Bangkok, so it’s understandable that his menu features a few fusion dishes combining European and Asian flavors, which is all the trend in Bangkok nowadays but a little harder to find in Pattaya.Obviously coming from Belgium, he is keen to promote imported Belgium beers: Hoegaarden “very popular with Thai ladies”, Kasteel, Karmeliet and Kriek St Louis to name a few. In no time at all our main courses arrived, Krissy always orders a steak and was not disappointed, especially considering the size of the portion, Adrian opted for the Atlantic cod with even more shrimps that were also not to be shared. Adrian’s pet

HEALTH & WELLNESS hate is fish bones, if he gets one in his mouth its game over for main course and straight on to dessert, so it was a bit of a gamble on his part. But he was very pleasantly surprised that not a single fish bone was on the plate, so absolutely no chance of me tasting the cod either! Pepsi my wife had the Tuna steak which was delicious and once again a very generous portion, served with really good mashed potatoes, which proved too much for her and for me Edwin recommended the Venison in sweet wine sauce with Croquette potatoes. The venison was served medium rare “the best and only way to have it” unless it’s in a stew of course.. The game being presented on a bed of sautéed cabbage and mushrooms which complimented the meat perfectly. So far top marks all round for the appetizers and main courses, but now we needed some breathing space before ordering dessert. With Edwin being from Belgium, I was really determined to try something chocolaty for dessert, but upon opening the dessert menu, my mind soon changed as I could not resist the Sabayon, which by the way I was extremely glad I ordered. Pepsi had the tiramisu; Adrian ordered a crème brulee, whilst the birthday girl Krissy went all out for the crepe suzette which was quite impressively flambéed at the table, with flames almost reaching the ceiling. All the deserts ordered were delicious, this isn’t a restaurant where you should skip dessert The star of the evening being the Sabayon came with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, fresh cream and red berry coulis, absolutely heavenly. Upon receiving the bill we were pleasantly surprised, you can easily eat in this restaurant for well under 1,000 THB per head for three courses. Obviously drinks are extra. But considering the ambience, service and quality of food, that really is quite amazing value. “Suggestions” also offer a lunch time special, set three course menu, with a choice of starters and main courses for as little as 250 THB, although Edwin stated that he will have to put the price up soon to 295 THB. - Well that’s certainly not going to deter me from visiting again soon, you really must try it, a great new addition to dining on the darkside. I wish Edwin and his staff every success in the future. The restaurant is open from 11am until 11pm six days a week, closed on Mondays Call for reservations ENG 0865580491 THAI 0958089288

Healthy Thai Food For this edition of The Pattaya Trader, focusing as it does on health and wellbeing it is interesting to look at some of the healthy foods to be found right here in Thailand. Most eaters of the country’s fiery food would agree that it merits being on just about any “top ten” or “world’s best” food list. However, what they probably aren’t aware of is the fact that the food of Siam also routinely turns up on the majority of the top ten lists designating the healthiest global cuisines. The reason for this is due to the many common and not so common ingredients used in Thai cooking. It’s the unique combination of Oriental and Occidental vegetables, herbs, spices and other ingredients that unaccompanied or collectively provides the human body with a remarkably wide range of healthy and beneficial nutrients. As long as processed foods, such as white sugar and MSG are avoided, Thai food, when properly prepared with high quality vegetable oil and all natural ingredients, is considered to be among the most nutritious cuisines the world has to offer. The following cross section of Thai staples, all of which are common to the Thai diet are perfect examples as to why just about any Thai dish or snack is better for your body than a greasy burger, sodium laced pizza or an oily serving of fish and chips.

By B.S. fruits on the planet, besides tasting good, most masticators of the mango are unaware of the fruit’s generous amount of vitamin C, high fibre content, as well as its high potassium and low sodium levels, both of which help to regulate one’s heart rate and blood pressure. Its antioxidant compounds have also been found to protect against leukemia, colon, breast and prostate cancer. A regular diet of mangos is also said to lower unhealthy cholesterol levels, clear clogged pores, and clear up pimples.

Young Coconut The water within a green coconut, which goes by the name of Má Práao-òn in the Land of Smiles, is low in sodium and rich in natural sugars and amino acids. This naturally well-balanced fluid is thought to be one of nature’s most nutritious, healthy, and refreshing drinks. One green coconut contains between 200 and 1,000ml of clear water or juice that is sweet, sterile and full of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and carbohydrates. When consumed right from the shell, the unique chemical makeup of coconut water promises to hydrate the body faster than any other liquid that can be imbibed. Coconut water is known to ease the ill-effects of a broad range of afflictions which range from dehydration to hangovers to kidney stones to cancer. If that’s not enough, coconut water is low in calories, cholesterol free, a good source of B-complex vitamins, and it has an extremely high mineral content. Plus, the water from one just coconut contains more potassium than four bananas. It has significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic and blood thinning properties. It has numerous natural enzymes which speeds-up and assists the human body’s metabolism, and digestive process.

Chili Pepper Take for example the fiery chili pepper or the Prik Khi Nu as it is known in Thai. Most eaters are unaware that it is one of the healthiest foods on our planet. Dreaded by some and beloved by others, the intense heat that the chili pepper provides is one of Thai cuisines’ signature flavors. It also makes other foods safer as it kills harmful bacteria that may be present in other ingredients, such as chicken, with which it come into contact during the cooking process. Nutrient wise, chilies are low in calories and sodium, cholesterol free, rich in folic acid; potassium and vitamin E. Plus, ounce for ounce chili peppers contain more vitamin A than carrots and more Vitamin C than any type of citrus fruit. In terms of overall health medical studies show that consuming chili peppers over a prolonged period of time can alleviate the pain of arthritis, neuralgia, shingles, and headaches. Chili peppers have also been known to minimize the effects of herpes, relieve stomach pain, and lower the risk of colon and stomach cancer when compared to those who consume far fewer chilies.

Mango Because of the many health benefits that Thailand’s favorite fruit possesses, the Ma Muang or mango has been aptly labeled a ‘super fruit’. Considered to be one of the most nutritionally rich

The Start of The Rugby World Cup 2015. The new season of the Rugby World Cup starts on Friday 18th September 2015 and there are plenty of exciting fixtures in place. Right at the start of the season England plays Fiji at Twickenham at 8pm local time as the first game on the opening date. Both are group-A contenders and it marks the first home game for England, with the entire season being held across stadiums in the UK. Hot on the heels of the opening match, no less than four more clashes take place on the following day, with times staggered such that all the games can be enjoyed in sequence. On that busy day, Tonga plays against Georgia at 12:00 in Gloucester followed by Ireland vs. Canada at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff with a start time of 2:30pm. Later in the afternoon, South Africa plays Japan in the south coast resort of Brighton at 4:45pm and the much anticipated all European match of France vs. Italy will take place with a start time of 8pm at Twickenham. England was chosen to host the competition beating rival bids from Japan, South Africa and Italy. Rugby World Cup 2015 is on track to be the best attended, most viewed and most competitive Rugby World Cup ever. It is expected to enjoy a huge commercial success following the extremely popular New Zealand Rugby World Cup tournament in 2011. With England home to all the matches in the season, more than 500,000 people are expected to travel to the United Kingdom to support their teams and follow the action. Heathrow Airport, as a major gateway to the UK is expected to welcome a majority of these supporters and so it seemed only fitting that the airport itself became one of the major commercial partners of the Rugby World Cup. Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye said: "As the UK’s front door, Heathrow is proud to welcome rugby fans and players from across the globe to Rugby World Cup 2015. We are delighted to be part of the team working to make this a fantastic tournament for everyone involved." World Rugby Chief Executive Brett Gosper added: "We are delighted to welcome another brand sector leader to the international family of Rugby World Cup 2015 commercial partners. Heathrow is a globally renowned brand and its appointment underscores the enormous appeal of Rugby World Cup. We are confident that England 2015 will be a truly global and record-breaking celebration of rugby and friendship and we look forward to welcoming the world to Rugby World Cup 2015. Heathrow Airport joins a growing list of major commercial partners that includes Heineken, Land Rover, Société Générale, DHL,

SPORT & LEISURE MasterCard and Emirates Airline who have painted the RWC 2015 logo onto some of their A380 jets. Official sponsors include CocaCola, Toshiba and Canon. Undoubtedly the success of the Rugby World Cup relies on Rugby remaining publicly a very clean sport and in this respect World Rugby is committed to ensuring the sport is drug free with a strict anti-doping program in place for 2015. The world-class body “UK Anti Doping” (UKAD) was appointed to oversee the 2015 Rugby World Cup and will be responsible for a rigid collection and analysis program that will cover all the teams during the course of the tournament. In addition, a “Keep Rugby Clean” day is set to take place on September 26th to re-enforce the theme that Rugby is as fair as it can be. World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: "Doping is one of the biggest threats to the integrity of sport and World Rugby is committed to a zero-tolerance policy towards drug cheats in rugby. The appointment of a globally renowned anti-doping organization to deliver the Rugby World Cup 2015 programme underscores this stance.” He added, “UKAD and World Rugby share the same values of integrity, discipline and respect and in addition to an ‘anytime, anywhere’ approach to testing, we will also be using Rugby World Cup 2015 as global educational platform of the importance of maintaining an even playing field through our Keep Rugby Clean day on 26 September. We are looking forward to working with UKAD on what will be a critical area of the Rugby World Cup 2015 tournament delivery." Whilst fairness of the game is a strong appeal of the Rugby World Cup, it is also the fast pace of the tournament that is appealing to fans. 20 teams take part and play is spread over 48 matches in just 44 days, with multiple matches taking place in sequence on weekend days. There are 4 pools (A, B, C and D) that consist of 5 teams in each pool. 12 of the 20 teams competing in the 2015 Rugby World Cup qualified by finishing in the top three places in their pools in the 2011 tournament. The remaining eight teams qualified through regional competition. Rugby World Cup tournaments take place only once every four years and so the event is keenly attended and watched by a growing number of fans around the world. New Zealand was both the host and the winner of the 2011 World Cup that saw them face off in the final against France. This year, New Zealand is scheduled to play Argentina on Sunday 20th September at 4:45pm local time as well as Namibia, Georgia and Tonga in the following weeks of the tournament. After its opening match against Fiji, England will play a closely watched match against Wales on Saturday 26th September at 8pm, as well as a keenly-eyed game against Australia the following week on Saturday October 3rd also at 8pm. Pool winners’ matches comprising quarter finals will commence on the 17th October. Semi finals and bronze finish finals will take place the week after, culminating in the Rugby World Cup final that will take place on Saturday October 31st 2015 at 4pm. This all important game will take place at Twickenham, which has a capacity of 82,000. It is one of 13 venues used throughout the tournament that includes London’s Olympic stadium, London’s Wembley stadium and several stadiums outside of the capital such as Newcastle’s St James park, Exeter’s Sandy Park and Manchester’s City Stadium amongst others. Of interest is that whilst Wales and England are distinct teams, and given that England is the host nation, one of the venues that will be used is the Cardiff Millennium Stadium in Wales. It hosts no less than 8 matches including some of the quarter finals as well as two earlier matches for the home crowd between Wales and Uruguay on the 20th September at 2:30pm and Wales vs. Fiji on the 1st October at 4:45pm. Media coverage is expected to be intense with most of the participating nations screening all of the 48 matches live. Non-participating nations are also expected to screen a good number of matches live. In Thailand look for sports bars that are offering live match viewings by way of satellite TV such as Sky sports, BT Sport, BBC, or ITV etc such as Retox on Soi Lengkee. In local Thai time, matches are six hours ahead for most of the tournament, so some of the 8pm kick-offs will mean an all-nighter for followers here in the Land of Smiles. However, most of the matches are earlier and can be enjoyed at an early or mid evening time. Look out for the final on the 31st October that will be 7 hours ahead due to the change in British Summer Time the week before. It will start at 11:45pm local Thai time and should definitely be a night to remember!

The Roots of Rugby During the Bronze and Iron Ages ancient Britons played a rough and tumble cross-country game that involved an inflated pig’s bladder. The Scots called it Ba Game, the Irish Caid, and the Welsh Cnapan. In Anglia, Germanic immigrants referred to that particular activity as Campball, and the Cornish knew it as Hurling to Goales. Across the channel, the Gallic races participated in a similar diversion that was labeled La Soule. To the frozen north the Danes competed in something that they called Knattlek. Today scholars agree that the roots of all those oddly designated pastimes can be traced back to an ancient Greek game called Phaininda, which means “to pretend”. The game was so named because the players attempted to move a ball forward whilst preventing their opponents from capturing it through a series of stratagems, tricks and feints. When the Romans conquered Greece in 146 BC, the Greek game was taken back to Rome where the Latin name of Harpastum was bestowed upon it. After which, it was the Roman Legionnaires who saw to it that the dangerous and sometimes deadly game of moving a pig’s bladder down field was spread throughout the continent that was still waiting to be christened as Europe.

Medieval ‘Foote Balle’ Somewhere between the Roman invasion of Britain and the end of the dark ages the game of Harpastum became colloquially known as ‘Foote Balle’ in early medieval Britain. Although the spelling was often different, early games of ‘foteball’ were more like an unruly mob melee than an organized sporting competition. Contests were usually held between neighboring towns or villages, and often used as a means to end a family feud or settle personal vendettas. Two teams comprised of an unlimited number of players, both mounted and dismounted, and of all ages and both sexes, would meet at noon, usually midway between opposing villages. The object was to get the ball back to a goal, which was often the square or public fountain, in one’s own village, by any means possible. Once the ball, which could be anything from an inflated pig’s bladder to a bundle of rags, was thrown into the air, the two teams would struggle to move that object to their village by kicking it, carrying it, throwing it, or hitting it with sticks and clubs. The field of play was not restricted in any way and the players followed the ball up hills, across valleys, over fields, through wooded areas, and even into rivers if need be. During the no-holds-barred match, injuries were common. Numerous players were maimed and many were accidentally killed or intentionally murdered to settle scores in prearranged ambushes. Win, lose or draw, play was abandoned at sunset.

‘A Murthering Practice’ Due to the human carnage and bloodletting inflicted on the masses by the game, and the damage it caused to local farms, villages, and commerce, football became an object of disapproval and derision amongst the well-heeled land and business owners. One detractor claimed that football should, ‘rather be called a frendle kind of fyghte than a play or recreation.’ Other critics with little sympathy towards the popular rowdy pastime labeled it as, ‘a bloody and murthering practice,’ or described it as ‘nothing but beastly fury and extreme violence.’ This combined with the fact that football lured both players and spectators away from their daily tasks, and the national duty of archery practice – archers at that time made up the backbone of the British Army – and the fact that the game was played on Sundays and disrupted religious holidays, incurred the ire of both church and crown. Due to the games many perceived evils and the noticeable decline in archery skills amongst the peasants, between 1314 and 1527, seven English kings put forth thirty royal decrees all of which banned the ‘murthering practice’ of football under pain of fine and imprisonment. The fact that so many royal proclamations had to be issued demonstrated just how popular football was to the impoverished serfs of medieval England.

SPORT & LEISURE

From Countryside to Campus By the late 18th and early 19th century, Britain’s population was gravitating away from an agrarian way of life to one that was more industrialized. Along with the change in profession from farmer to factory worker, football had also evolved into a somewhat more civilized mob activity. Its popularity however, was on the wane.

England’s public schools, when first founded, were initially intended to educate the sons of the poor. Noble as that endeavor was, by the early 1800s, the public boy’s schools were filled not with England’s underclass, but the sons of England’s upper-crust. The living quarters and teaching standards at what were meant to be low class learning institutions were not of sufficient caliber for the earls and lords to be. As a result of that inequity, and the fact that their instructors, whom the entitled pupils perceived to be socially inferior, the students armed themselves with swords, guns and explosives and rebelled! The riots were such that at both Winchester and Rugby Schools the army had to be summoned to restore order. As soon as peace had been reestablished – Westminster, Charthouse and Rugby, deemed it prudent to allow the boys to play the commoner’s game of football as a means to release their ‘aggressive tendencies’. At that time football remained a full contact ‘mob game’ with very loose rules. Due to the catch, carry and ‘scrag’ tactics of the game, more than a few of the tackled lads at Winchester and Charthouse found themselves in hospital with serious abrasions or fractured limbs. The injuries were found to be the fault of the hard surface on which the game was played at those institutions. As a preventative measure, it was decided that the ball should remain on the ground and be kicked and not carried. Thus running with the ball was outlawed and the ‘Kicking Game’ that we now know as Football or Soccer was born. Rugby’s playing field however, was just that – a soft grass field. Therefore, the same catch, carry, and scrag method of playing ‘Carry Ball’ remained in play.

Rules, Refinement & the RFU

Rugby had gone global.

Like so many other sports played in Victorian England, it was the sense of fair play and the subsequent need for rules by which unfamiliar games prospered. With this in mind three Rugby School prefects drew up the first set of ‘Rugby rules’ in 1845. Before long, the former schoolboys, now fully grown men, formed clubs to broaden the appeal of ‘Rugby Rules Football’. Later in 1871, the 21 football clubs still playing the ‘carrying game’ agreed to abide by a single set of Rugby rules. Also, because the methods of play between the carrying and kicking variations of football were so radically different, it was decided that a separate organization devoted solely to carry ball should be formed. Thus the group broke away from the Football Association and formed a new body: the Rugby Football Union (RFU) named after the Rugby School football rules to which it prescribed … Thus giving the sport its present name. Back when there were no written rules and no referees presided over a match, the arts of tripping and ‘hacking’ or viciously kicking an opposing player; often with boots bearing sharpened nails had been, and was still an accepted form of tackling. As the clubs idly watched their playing strength dwindle due to that unsportsmanlike conduct, RFU rules were amended abolishing the injurious practice. Six months after the RFU was founded the first international match was played against Scotland in Edinburg.

The sport of Rugby made its Olympic debut at the 1900 Summer Olympic Games which took place in Paris, France. Defeating Germany, the winner of what turned out to be the first of Rugby’s only four Olympic appearances was the home team of France. It was said that the Rugby event drew the largest crowd of all of that year’s events. Rugby next appeared in the 1908 Summer Olympics Games in London. The coveted gold medal was taken down under by the Australians. Surprisingly, it was the United States that captured the gold medal in the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympic Games. Despite the fact that Rugby drew larger crowds than any of the track and field events, for reasons unknown it was dropped from the games after the 1924 Olympiad. However, in 2009, the International Olympic Committee voted that Rugby Sevens would return to the summer games scheduled to convene at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016.

The IRFB & Beyond Due to an irreconcilable dispute over the aforementioned and highly contested inaugural international match, the home unions of Scotland, Ireland and Wales banded together in 1886 to form the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB). England however, refused to join that organization. The RFU held out for four years, but as no home union team would play against England, the RFU finally relented and become a member in 1890. In 1930 the RFU and IRFB agreed that the member countries would all play under the laws as set forth by the IRFB. By the turn of the century, the style of carry ball had changed dramatically and the new sport of

Hi Folks, it's been a hard time fishing, weather’s been bad and the health has not been so good. Scott's group aboard Captain Deang's boat had a great trip out with 26 queen fish (bpla salat) and 2 golden trevally. I think they were at north east of Koh Pia as I have been at Koh Man Wichia and had little success. I had been at Koh Man Wichia twice and had five small barracuda (bpla sak) a medium size queen fish and lost two big queen's. So I was hopeful that the next trip with my buddy would successful. I had caught four of the small barracuda (just under a pound .4 kg) with bare hooks jigged. I tie all my own rigs and this time I had tied four nickel plated long shanked hooks with 20 lb fluorocarbon to 20 lb fluorocarbon. Normally I avoid this type of hook as the long shank is visible and it goes rusty very quickly. The long shank (the fish cannot chew it) and visible is just what I want. You do have to use a four inch line from the hook to the main trace as sometimes the fish can snag the main line when it hits the hook. The trip was a disaster, Frank snake bitten at Koh Man Wichia, never caught anything over a pound and lost loads of fish. The only place I constantly out fish him! For four hours we stayed on the anchor with one live bait out and Frank and I jigging. I got a pound plus barracuda and Frank zip. I was not surprised as when we first got there live bait was very hard to catch. And if there's no small fish for the predators to eat why would they be there? After four hours we decided that the dead horse had been flogged enough and we went home. On the way back we decided to troll for horse mackerel off monkey beach as the tide was rising. In an hour we had several 10 oz fish in the live well and they had

put up a decent fight on light tackle. Stunning that we put more meat in the livewell with light tackle than the long trip out to Koh Man Wichia. My fishing buddy and I decided to go to Phuket for a holiday, fishing of course. So we booked up a month before we were due to go. Problem was the bad weather down there stayed, and when we arrived it was blowing a gale, heavy rain and local flooding. We arranged a run out for 1,200 Bht each and if we liked the boat etc could for 8,000 Bht have the boat to ourselves. When the time for the pick up came and went, we called in and were told that three metre waves were pounding the boat at the dock. And that we were cancelled for the next two days -not a good start! Like when we got a minibus from the airport, 41 kms to Patong for 180 Bht with a stop on route to sell us accommodation, or trips. I like to see the location of the hotel so we waited the 10 to 15 minutes while the others got their promo hotels and the minibus company got their commission. So finally the day came, we were on a group fishing trip. I looked around the boat as we got on and saw snorkels and face masks and the only rods were the big rigs for trolling. We set off and started trolling with two out riggers and four off the back, after we cleared the first two islands and headed out to the main island of Racha an hour and a half away. Two small fish a 1lb rainbow runner and a 1lb tuna were caught, no fun as they were winched in. The boat started to go close to all the other boats anchored close to shore. People started swimming and I was told fishing was not allowed here. We were on the wrong boat, it was a fun run out. After lunch about 1.30 pm they took us to a deep water spot, handed out hand lines and we got ready with our own gear. We caught some small fish although a bit bigger than we get around Koh Larn. And then home, we were frustrated, and the rest of the group were happy. They had a good day, fishing , swimming lunch and home. Next time we will charter our own boat and fish all day. So as usual, if you want any info on tackle shops or want to share your photo's of your catch of the day, it's plamafia5@aol.com or 0808356945 SMS. Have fun Roger

EXPLOSIVE SUPER CAR ACTION IN NORTH EAST RAISES THE CURTAIN FOR PATTAYA SHOWDOWN Thailand Super Series returned to the North East last month for its second and final visit of the year to the new world class racing circuit in Buriram and after all the drama and excitement of the season opener anticipation was certainly sky-high for ‘The Sequel’. The four biggest racing categories in Thailand, the three sportscar-focused ‘Super Car’ categories and ‘Super 2000’ the hard fought home of the best touring car action, didn’t disappoint the fans one bit as close fought racing ensued. That sets the stage perfectly for TSS’s visit this month to Pattaya’s Bira International Circuit. This year the calendar comprises of four events as usual, the first two have seen the series travelling to Buriram to the new Chang International Circuit, but they’re both done with now and next stop is Bira, the historic heartland of Thai motorsport. The final round of the year will be on the streets of Bangsaen in November so Pattaya race fans have two ‘mega-events’ right on their doorstep coming up. That all said, plenty of people still braved the 415 km road journey from the seaside resort to Buriram to see the race action at Round 2 unfold last month. In the biggest category of them all, Super Car Class 1-GT3, Reiter Vattana Motorsport’s Czech superstar Tomáš Enge and his teammate, the reigning champion Chonsawat Asavahame, split the wins between them. The pair were very evenly matched all weekend driving the #25 Chevrolet Camaro GT3 and #28 Lamborghini Gallardo Extenso R-EX respectively. Those results mirrored the first round of the series and it leaves the top class in a dead heat. Meanwhile the pace in Super Car Class 2-GTM went through the roof as the arrival of Jack Lemvard in a front-running Vattana Motorsportentered Lamborghini Gallardo LP520 really shook up the racing order. He planted his dazzling new machine straight onto pole position and controlled Race 1 from the front right from the green lights to the checkered flag to book himself the top step of the podium, announcing his return to the top in style.

Pattaya’s hotshot youngster Kantasak Kusiri chased him to the finishline in his Ferrari 458 Challenge in the first race and then went one better in the second to move into the provisional lead of the championship as the competitors left Buriram on Sunday evening, although the result of Race 2 currently remains provisional. Local race fans will certainly be out in force at Bira for round three to cheer on their hero as he looks to bring the title ‘home’.

The action in both the top classes was intense and the gaps throughout the weekend in practice, qualifying and the races were always wafer-thin. And despite the humidity and heavy skies the rain mostly stayed away. But it didn’t stop there as the newest addition to the Super Car 'tree’ at the pinnacle of Thai motorsport', Class 3-GTC, continued to justify its addition to the TSS programme with two exciting races that saw the action continuing to hot up and the standard of drivers, cars and teams is certainly growing fast as this category finds its feet. The first Class 3-GTC race victory was claimed by Naputt Assakul in the sleek little Ginetta G55, he's now starting to shape up into the driver to beat for the title this year, while Race 2 saw Grant Supaphong take victory after a faultless drive in the Krating Daeng Mitsubishi Evo X and when this very powerful car runs reliably he seems to be quite unbeatable. The Super 2000 win in Race 1 went to Khun Munkong Sathienthirakul who never looked like being headed in his pacey Honda Civic FD and he stamped his mark on the proceedings. He looked fast at the season opener too and so that was something of an overdue win. Stand in driver at Singha Motorsport Team Thailand, Khun Carlo Van Dam, got the closest but in the end the Dutch professional driver had to settle for the runners up spot while third place went to Singha TT Motorsport’s Khun Chayut Yangpichit who ‘Touring Car’ championship points leader Jack Lemvard bided his time in the first race in the ballast-laden Vattana Motorsport BMW E90 and by hanging on for P4 neatly lined himself up on the front row for the second race, thanks to the top five reverse grid, and with some of his weight being shed he powered away from the pack to claim his third win of the year and in doing so he starts to edge towards the title. Chayut went one better than the first race, he turned in another superb drive to nab the runners up spot while Pasarit Phromsombat continued his season long fine form with third place. Super 2000 has a big reputation for providing some of the closest fought racing in Thailand and this year is proving to be no different. Super Car Class 3-GTC meanwhile is growing fast in stature and also commanding close racing from very evenly matched cars. Strength in depth and competitive racing are the hallmarks of both these popular categories.

PORSCHE RACERS RETURN TO THAILAND AFTER A DECADE ABSENCE The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is one of the continent’s most enduring and prestigious motor racing championships. It’s also a familiar name to Pattaya race fans as the series used to visit Bira Circuit. However Porsche’s sophisticated breed of ‘911’ shape racecars and the growing mix of professional and fast gentlemen drivers behind the wheel simply became too fast for Bira Circuit and the last visit here is now almost a distant memory, in fact it took place in 2005. In the meantime the professional standards of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, more simply known to fans by its acronym ‘PCCA’, has continued to climb and a return trip to Thailand just wasn’t a possibility – until now. Exactly a decade on PCCA made a very welcome return to Thailand last month and that’s thanks to the rapid rise in stature of Thailand Super Series and the arrival on the motorsport landscape of Chang International Circuit. The state-of-the-art racetrack in Buriram, built to such high standards that it needs little more than a nod in safety terms to be able to hold a Formula 1 Grand Prix, has brought with it a revolution to circuits here. More dots were joined up this year as Thai representation on the PCCA grid, for so many years absent, came back in force as three of our drivers lined up for a full season in the series, which takes in Asia’s top racetracks including Sepang (Malaysia), Fuji (Japan) and Shanghai (China) as well as Singapore’s Formula 1 temporary street track. Two of those drivers are well established names in PCCA, Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak and Sontaya Kunplome, have been flying the flag for Thailand for many years now both nationally and internationally. Both drivers raced at Bira Circuit when the series last came here in 2005 and both were back on the grid at Chang International Circuit for the return last month. In motorsport the sweeping hand of history is never very far away and these two seasoned battlers made sure that there were more footnotes to be written into the record books. This time though there were actually three Thai drivers on the grid as another of our leading names, Bobby Buncharoen, has also joined PCCA this year for the first time. Pattaya native and one of

MOTOR & MARINE the most successful of our local drivers. In fact his signature matt-black racecar colours with brightly coloured True He’s a well-known driver to our readers as he’s a Visions sponsorship, so familiar here, have been carried straight over to his PCCA Porsche. It meant that with Vutthikorn, Sontaya and Bobby on the entry list as part of a 28-strong line-up of the latest-generation Porsche 991 GT3 Cup racecars Thai interest was sky-high. The return of PCCA here didn’t disappoint one bit either and, as soon as the cars poured out of the pitlane and onto the 4.554-km, 12-turn circuit for the very first free practice session on the Friday morning, there was plenty of drama as the swathe of drivers started to learn the track and test the braking zones to the limit. None of the international cast of drivers, and it really was international as the countries represented included New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Holland, Australia, Macau, Canada, France, Norway, Austria and Germany, had seen the track before, apart from, of course, the trio of Thais. In the run up to the Thai round, ‘PCCA 2015’ has been all about one man, Chris van der Drift. The tall New Zealander of Dutch descent, who has a long and successful single-seater background, arrived in Buriram having won the last four races on the trot and he proceeded to leave Thailand having made it six consecutive wins, and that’s out of just eight races held so far this year. He took to Chang International Circuit like a duck to water and although he had to fight hard for both the wins there was really the presence of a man who is determinedly stamping his mark on PCCA 2015 and certainly isn’t planning to loosen the one hand he already has closing in on the championship trophy. Chris said afterward that he enjoyed the circuit and the challenge it provided, particularly he noted it suited the unique characteristics of the ‘991’. “The track was fantastic and the facilities around the circuit were also great, it really is a top notch venue of European standard,” he said. “It was very enjoyable to drive the Porsche there, my favourite corner was number four, the fast left hander.” In the end PCCA slotted very neatly into the TSS programme but one of the questions in the build up to the event was just how would a highly professional international race series like PCCA fit with Thailand’s top racing championship? No one better to ask than Chris then. “I managed to watch a few sessions of the TSS and it was great to see the vast differences of cars running which made some great racing I thought,” he said.

In the spirit of the magazine’s theme of Fitness and Wellbeing we take a look at a healthier form of transport in this month’s Motor and Marine section – Mountain Biking. Why Mountain Biking? Well – because it’s fun. I’m not kidding; it really does make you happy. At least according to science, exercise reduces depression as it releases endorphins, which are the chemicals in our brain that make us happy. Physical activity, such as mountain biking, also decreases the level of chemicals in the brain that intensify depression. So I guess that’s what makes mountain biking a happy thing … Right?

Fitness & Cycling Okay, if you don’t buy into the whole heightened happiness thing, any type of cycling does provide numerous other health benefits to the cycler. Riding a bike improves your overall cardiovascular fitness. In fact, a recent medical study showed that cycling just 20 miles (32km) per week can lower the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke by almost 50 per cent. Bike riding also offers all of the same cardiovascular benefits as running but without the negative impact that jogging has on your joints. In addition, cycling will build, strengthen, and tone all of your muscles, especially those of your legs, thighs, buttocks, and hips. Your stronger leg muscles will in turn further protect and prevent your hip and knee joints from injury.

Regular versus Mountain We’ve established that regular cycling is good for your health, so why mountain biking? It’s true that the typical mountain biker encounters a few bumps and bruises along the way but the benefits of mountain biking are said to more than make up for the odd scrape or bruise. Besides getting you physically fit, mountain biking will improve your stamina, speed up your reflexes and develop your coordination. Plus it gets you out of the city. Scientific research has proved that challenging, rigorous outdoor activities reduce stress; boost self-confidence levels, and raise self-esteem. If you need more incentive, another reason to choose mountain biking, is that whether on the trail or through a club, it will provide the cycler with an excellent opportunity to make new friends with at least one similar interest.

Getting Started Before you rush out to the wilds on your shiny new mountain bike, it’s best to first seek a bit of health advice from a doctor before doing so. It’s also advisable to do a small amount of research before launching blindly into a rigorous fitness program of any sort. First (if you have one), figure out how to incorporate

cycling into your overall daily fitness regime. Next, go online and check out the latest biking gear such as helmets or knee and elbow pads. If you’re not sure that you’re ready to take on the rugged mountain trails just yet, or because your doctor has advised you not to, consider a road bike built for paved surfaces or a hybrid bike designed for both town and trail. Meanwhile, you can investigate the myriad of mountain bikes that are available by reading an appraisal or review in order to gauge each bike’s merits or lack thereof – like this one …

The Cannondale Habit XC The ‘Habit XC’, whose acronym stands for “Cross Country” is a carbon, full suspension mountain bike with 120mm of travel or ‘cushion’ at both the front and rear ‘shock absorbers’. All models of the Habit roll on 27.5” (61cm) aluminum or carbon alloy wheels and tires. The bike’s frame is comprised of Ballis Tec high modulus carbon and its trail oriented geometry includes a 68 degree head angle, an ultra-light one-piece carbon link, short chainstays, a low-slung chassis, and wide 760mm handlebars mounted on a ‘shorty’ 60mm stem. The Habit’s high-end mechanical features are composed of 180mm brake rotors, HollowGram Si cranks (the things the pedals are attached to) and a custom 50mm damper on the Lefty2.0 fork, which makes that style of fork’s ‘shock absorber’ both smoother and quicker to react. The bike’s eleven gear drive train is the SRAM XX1/X01x11, which has been paired up with SRAM’s Guide RSC brake system. The Habit is available in no less than ten variations, which include carbon or alloy frames and two women’s models. Prices for the various Habit models range from the modest sum of $1,950.00 (70,000 Thai baht) for the bottom shelf, Habit Women’s 2, all the way up to the top of the line, Habit Hi-Mod Black Ink, which will set you back a mere $12,250.00 (433,420 Thai baht)!

Performance Over a 14 mile (22km) ride across terrain composed of sandy track and a rocky dirt fire road with 2,400 (731.5 meter) feet of ascent and then descent, the Habit’s climbing prowess was admirable and its downhill capabilities were excellent. The bikes full front and rear suspension ensured that both rider and bike concluded the journey in one piece. The carbon rims tracked true over the rugged topography, and despite the Habit’s reduced wheel size the bike experienced no pedal strikes during its more than rapid downhill descent. All in all, the Habit’s light weight of just 25.4 pounds (11.5kg), combined with its sturdy build, and small stature, makes it perfectly suited for all styles or mountain bike riding (cross-country, trail, dirt jumping, endure & downhill).

Siamese Cycling

Thailand is a perfect destination for any on or off road cycling or a guided cycling tour. The rugged landscape of Northern Thailand with its mountainous terrain, verdant rain forests, and fascinating Hill Tribe villages is one of the preferred locations for serious domestic and foreign mountain bikers. The mountains near Chiang Mai, which are in fact the foothills of the mighty Himalayan Mountain range, are laced with miles of off road trails and breathtaking downhill runs. Whether you’re cycling solo or going with a group Chiang Mai is a mountain biker’s paradise. With mountain tops that reach some 5,700 feet (1,600 meter) into the sky there are hidden trails that have as much as a 4,000 foot (1,220 meter) drop in elevation that could just whisk you by one of the many remote Hill Tribe villages.

There are also a number of tour operators who specialize in guided mountain bike tours of various lengths located at or near many of Thailand’s popular national parks and tourist destinations. Most accept riders of all abilities, provided they are in good physical condition and have a wide selection of bike tours to choose from, led by an experienced guide or instructor who speaks English (to a varying degree). Each guide also has extensive knowledge of the local trail system, is proficient in the arts of bike repair and rudimentary first-aid. The guides are also equipped with tools and spare bike parts, a first-aid kit, and a means with which to communicate with the outside world. Before each ride a safety briefing is typically held for the benefit of the less experienced cyclers. Most tour groups are not in a hurry to reach their destination. Therefore the cyclers are generally grouped based on their riding ability. That way each sub-group is never compelled to catch up with the better riders in front who are travelling at a higher rate of speed. Tour operators provide bikes, safety gear in the form of bicycle helmets, kneepads, elbow pads and sometimes riding gloves. Occasionally chest and back protection will be provided when a ride takes place on an advanced trail. Drinking water is also provided and often a lunch or meal takes place at an approved restaurant at the trails end.

Pattaya is a city famous for shiny lights, rock and roll, an impressive variety of watersports and a rather surprising amount of motorbike enthusiasts. With new (and ever bigger) motorbike shops offering the best brands, Pattaya folk are always awaiting the latest models of sportbikes to hit the road. Heck, it’s health month so it’s up to you to ensure that you keep your heart healthy pumping with the adrenaline only these motorbikes can provide. Here are the latest super-machines that will keep you checking Pattaya's bike shops for the rest of the year, enjoy:

1) Kawasaki H2/H2R A stunning machine right at the top of the pyramid. Looking beyond the absolute beauty of the design, no other production motorcycle is supercharged like this. Just the idea of being able to feel the effects of that chain- and gear-driven blower (which spins at 10 times the speed of the crankshaft and transforms this new-from-the-groundup Kawasaki into a apex 200-plus-mph machine) is as much of an excuse as I need. The new Kawasaki H2 is the street version of it's powerful trackonly sibling the 300 hp Kawasaki H2R. They are indeed very similar (including the chassis and suspension) , the main difference being the smaller 200hp power on the street-safe version, both track-only the street version comes with the supercharged engine we talked about before. There's a mind-blowing amount of high-tech electronics and computer work at play keeping this efficient (and almost futuristic) machine running at the performance levels it does (everything from the braking to the gear changes is aided by computer systems that ensure absolute control of this amazing machine under varied & extreme road situations and speeds). Each single aspect of the design, each single element and line on this engineering masterpiece has been researched, studied and improved to ensure an aerodynamic performance that brings Kawasaki that much closer to perfection.

Kawasaki Ninja Specs Engine: Liquid-cooled, 4-stroke in-line four Displacement: 998cc Bore x Stroke: 76.0 x 55.0mm Compression ratio: 8.5:1 Fuel System: DFI® 50mm throttle bodies x 4 with dual injection Intake System: Kawasaki supercharger Transmission: 6-speed, return, dog-ring Frame Type: Trellis, high-tensile steel, with swingarm mounting plate

Márquez, that’s quite bad-ass.

Remember, Honda is pushing the limits of what is considered a legal ride, and this motorbike embodies decades upon decades of engineering and design, now available to the public. Here’s all you need to know, in Honda’s own words:

“In addition, the RC213V-S is equipped with control technologies used on the RC213V. The RC213V consists only of the necessary parts for winning races, based on the idea of changing specifications as necessary according to the rider and course. To achieve the specifications that make the RC213V-S eligible to run on public roads, the minimal amount of necessary changes and additions has been made compared to the RC213V.”

Honda RC213V-S specs Ducati 1299 Panigale S 2015 If you thought the Ducati 1199 Panigale was an extraordinary sports bike (which it was), you'll be more than thrilled to know that the 1199 Panigale S pretty much surpases it's predecessor in every single way. From a more powerful engine to even better electronics, Ducati fans definitely have a lot to look forward to.

Engine: Liquid-cooled 4-stroke 4-valve DOHC V-4 Displacement: 999cc Bore x Stroke: 81.0×48.5 Compression Ratio: 13.0:1 Fuel Injection: PGM-DSFI electronic fuel injection with φ48mm throttle bodies Gearbox: 6-speed: constant mesh Frame type: Diamond

The newest model sports is an extremely impressive Ducati Superquadro 1285 cc engine with power of 205 hp at 10.500 rpm, this implies a 10% increase from it's predecessor. Consider the fact that this machine weighs a respectable 166,5 Kg which means the kinetic energy it can accumulate taking into account it's power and weight is, well, kind of scary (but in the best way possible!) Riders will love the experience created with a lot of the latest electronic advancements which have allowed the Italian company to include 3 'modes' of driving for this amazing machine (Race, Sporty Rain), a newly designed technology IMU (which allows for ABS during curves), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) 8-level traction control and the amazing Ducati Data Analyzer that allows for data-collection and improvements that will keep your Ducati the efficiently-tuned and gorgeous machine it ought to be.

Ducati 1299 Panigale S specs Power: 150.8 kW (205 hp) @ 10.500 rpm Displacement: 1285cc Bore x Stroke: 116x60.8mm Compression ratio: 12.6:1 Fuel injection: Electronic fuel injection system. Twin injectors per cylinder. Full ride-by-wire elliptical throttle bodies. Exhaust: 2-1-2 system with catalytic converter and 2 lambda probes. Twin stainless steel mufflers with alumimum end caps Gearbox 6: speed with DQS Ducati Quick Shift up/down Frame: Monocoque Aluminium

Honda RC213V-S This beauty is a super machine originally designed by a close collaboration between the Honda Racing Corporation (HCR) and Honda Motor. In simple words, this model is pretty much a road-legal version of the monstrous Honda RC213V, which has won the MotoGP in past occasions. There is a real similitude between this legal model and the track-exclusive versions of World Champions Dani Pedrosa and Marc

By B.S.

B

leary eyed early risers out for a morning stroll and extreme night owls with glassy eyes staggering homeward as the sun rises swear they’ve seen shadowy figures treading silently along Pattaya’s sleepy sois and sais (alleys and streets). Others of a more pious nature anxiously await the arrival of the specter like beings as they noiselessly emerge from the shadows of the predawn darkness. The rest of us have also wittingly or unwittingly witnessed these entities whilst engrossed in other business during our tenure in the Land of Smiles.

From whence they came and to where they go is not known by most non-natives who’ve only spied them from afar. Those in the know however, are well aware of the place of their origin and of the ultimate destination of their daybreak pilgrimage. Those who’ve had more than a glimpse of these first light apparitions, without fail, all state that they are shoeless, saffron clad life forms that walk erect with heads that have been shorn of hair and sometimes eyebrows. Intrepid souls who‘ve lingered longer in their presence, further report that some amongst them carry an object similar in size to that of a severed human head within the folds of their voluminous robes. Eyewitness accounts clearly state that they silently glide up to a kneeling supplicant who waits patiently by the roadside. Some sort of offering is then placed into an object intended for such, which is tucked under the arm of one of the younger beings. The supplicant then calmly places his or her palms together and bows as if begging for mercy. This pose is rigidly maintained until the individual who accepted the endowment nods a shaven pate showing either respect or approval of the bounty received. Within seconds of the head bob, the robed figure’s collective attention is then focused elsewhere and the group, moving in single file, silently slips back into the early morning shadows in search of the next offering.

Alms Outing The above is not some arcane ritual that only takes place in a Hollywood thriller. It is in fact a spiritual and much cherished tradition that occurs during the hours of approximately 5:30 and 8:00 am on a daily basis here in Pattaya and in every other city within the Kingdom of Thailand. The Thais refer to this custom as Gaan Hâi Taan, which roughly translates into “giving alms in charity”. The entities, to which the alms are bestowed, are neither zombies nor alien creatures from another world. They are in fact, Buddhist monks wrapped in saffron colored cloth, whose journey both begins and terminates at the nearest Wat, which is the Thai word for a Buddhist temple. Lord Buddha teaches that every monk must show humility and have a disinterest in worldly goods. In addition to obvious possessions such as a luxury automobile or an iPhone, the meaning of worldly goods as it applies to a Buddhist monk also extends to more mundane objects such as cooking utensils and surprisingly, edible matter! In fact, the Bàat Prá or monk’s alms bowl is the only kitchen appliance that a Buddhist monk is allowed to possess. Due to their dearth of physical assets, Thai monks traditionally go on a daily alms round near the temple in which they inhabit or in the proximity of the tree or cave in which they may reside in the case of a forest monk. Having neither the ability to cook or otherwise prepare food, nor the means with which to shop for groceries, Buddhist monks rely on the local community for all of their edible and drinkable needs except for that of drinking water. Therefore, early in the morning, usually when it is still dark, either singly or in a group, the monks slow walk the sois on which the Buddhist faithful wait in front of both home and shop. In single file, with their robes draped in a manner that conservatively covers both shoulders’ and carefully arrayed from front to back, according to the seniority of their ordination, the monks walk barefoot through the village or city. As the pious pilgrims move from shop to house, they must do so in silence. It doesn’t matter if they are a part time priest or long term temple man, decorum demands that they not make eye contact or request anything. They are not permitted to either favor nor neglect any neighborhood, be it ever so rich or pitiably poor. They may only accept what is freely donated.

Edible Alms Each commodity collected must be formally offered, and it must never come into contact with a monk’s hands. Everything must be placed inside the alms bowl after the monk first lifts the lid. It is expressly forbidden for a woman to touch or even brush up against a monk or his robes. A female accidentally coming into contact with a monk, regardless of the circumstances will require

him to endure a lengthy cleansing process. To circumvent this during morning alms, a female merit maker should place the offering on a special cloth carried by the monk, whose purpose is to receive the alms offered by a woman. If no cloth is available, the alms should be handed to a man, who will in turn, transfer it to the monk, or her donation should be forwarded to a layman assistant, if one accompanies the monks. The edible alms and offerings primarily consist of steamed rice, fresh fruit, sweets, cooked meat or fish, and a variety of Thai curries, soups or stir-fries, as well as bottled water. Each item must be individually wrapped so that it can be safely placed into the alms bowl.

Monks are only permitted to collect and consume food between dawn and midday. They are however, permitted to drink plain water, not received as alms, at any hour of the day or night. Once collected, all alms are taken back to the wat to be shared with the other monks, the nuns, and the rest of the temple’s staff. The food collected must be consumed no later than noon on the day it was offered. Nothing can be saved for the next day or leftovers returned to a lay person or used to feed the stray soi dogs that congregate near the Thai wats precisely for that purpose.

The Art of Giving Alms The art of giving alms is easily accomplished, even by a non-Thai. As the bowl bearing monks approach hold the articles you desire to donate somewhere between waist and chest height where they are easily visible. The procession of monks will stop. One will produce an alms bowl usually slung from the right shoulder to help carry the weight of the bowl and its bounty. After its top is removed, being careful not to jostle or touch the monk, cautiously place your packets of provisions within. After which you may wai the monk by bowing your head, pressing your palms together and placing them so that your finger tips come into contact with the bottom of your chin. In return the monk will either nod his head in appreciation or enlighten you with a sentence or two of Buddha’s teachings. If you really want to do it properly, remove your shoes, and then kneel down until the monk ceases to utter the wisdom of Lord Buddha. Keep in mind that giving alms is not a social visit. As such, the entire procedure will be brief. It should not be accompanied by any small talk, and no matter what, don’t even think about taking a selfie!

The Advantage of Alms The giving of alms is not considered to be a form of charity in the Western sense of providing aid to an impoverished person. In Buddhism, alms giving is a method in which a lay Buddhist can make merit by showing humility and respect to the monks and nuns who embody the teachings of Buddha. In other words, the Thai people believe that the more a person gives without seeking something in return, the richer, in terms of health, happiness, wisdom, and perhaps even in wealth, they will become.

I’ll Drink to That

e humans are a funny lot and, in my humble opinion, there are none funnier than the current Australian Government which rules over the Nanny State formerly known as Australia. In their latest attempt to make the Guinness Book of Records as the stupidest group of people on the planet the Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion, called for banning Vegemite in remote areas because of fears it was being used to make alcohol. Note the term “remote areas” is the Politically Correct term for “Aboriginal Communities”. The senator went on to say “he was tired of hearing about ‘people’s rights’ and wanted people to consider the affect upon women and children in remote communities.”And here I was thinking Australia was a democracy where ‘people’s rights’ were of paramount importance. Apparently I was misinformed - perhaps the good senator should relocate to North Korea. . For the uninitiated, Vegemite is the salty yeast extract spread that is as Australian as meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars. It has an ‘acquired taste’ but, for more than eighty years, Australian children have been raised with Vegemite on toast in the mornings. Yeast extracts are obtained from bakers’ yeasts and used as natural flavour enhancers in many foods. Containing very little active yeast, it would take a lot of Vegemite to start a fermentation process. Still (pun intended), there have been reported instances of people buying up to twenty jars of Vegemite at a time for brewing (sometimes fermented in bathtubs) homemade alcohol. Do you know how much 20 jars of Vegemite costs? Even small jars would leave no change out of $100. A small packet of baker’s yeast would do a better job at a fraction of that price. Interesting to note that the original news page on the Internet has been removed and replaced with one in which the Prime Minister defends Vegemite thereby forcing the senator to make a retraction stating the government “is not seeking to place any restrictions on Vegemite or any other yeast product that may be used in home brew in remote communities.” I can only assume, after the community backlash, the senator has been sent to the very crowded Parliamentary Dunce’s Corner to learn to think before opening his mouth next time. But going to extraordinary lengths to obtain alcohol is not purely a human condition; there are plenty of other animals that like to party as well.“The capacity to enjoy alcohol or inebriation of any kind is not a unique product of humans,” says Professor Gisela Kaplan, an animal behaviour expert at the University of New England in Armidale, NSW. “There’s plenty of evidence that orangutans and apes and elephants will wander for miles to seek the pleasure of fermented fruits; so they basically like to get drunk.” The drawback for these keen drinkers is that happy hour only comes around at certain times during the year. In northern Australia before the annual rains, lorikeets (a very colourful parrot) eat the fruit from trees once the fruit has fermented.

“They stagger all over the place, can’t keep steady on their perches and fall head first into their food bowls. They tend to be depressed, they can’t fly and they have difficulty climbing or balancing on perches.” Sound familiar? In the Northern Hemisphere, alcohol forms in winter berries as they ferment with the first frosts, and the birds that gorge on these winter fruits may get drunk more often than we think, scientists say. “Most birds likely just get a bit tipsy, and very few people would be able to pick them out as intoxicated,” said Meghan Larivee, laboratory coordinator at the government agency Environment Yukon in Canada. “However, every now and then, some birds just overdo it.” Know the feeling well! Wallabies in Tasmania have been seen falling around and hopping in circles, apparently high after feeding in local poppy fields. In 2009, the state attorney general told a parliamentary hearing, “We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles.” Tasmania is the world’s largest producer of legally grown opium for the pharmaceutical industry and when food is scarce, the wallabies survive by eating the plant’s intoxicating heads. While in Sweden, an intoxicated moose made international headlines when it became entangled in an apple tree in a residential area after gorging on the fermented fruit. While reindeer in Eastern Europe deliberately forage for, and have been known to fight over, the hallucinogenic Amanita muscaria mushroom. “[The reindeer] have a desire to experience altered states of consciousness,” wrote scientist Andrew Haynes in the Pharmaceutical Journal. The bright red mushrooms are considered highly toxic and can cause dizziness in humans, so to avoid any nasty side effects, Siberian natives would get high by feeding the fungi to the reindeer, then drinking the animal’s urine. I think I’ve had beer that tasted like that! “Vervet monkeys on the Caribbean island of St Kitts once devoured fermented sugar cane grown by the rum industry but now they cheekily scavenge cocktails from tourists along the beaches. Studies of their behaviour have found the monkeys’ drinking habits are similar to those of people. Most drink in moderation, but around 12 per cent drink heavily, five per cent drink excessively, and a small group reject alcohol altogether. Juvenile monkeys also tend to drink more than adults.” And it has long been believed that African elephants get drunk off the fermenting fruit of the Marula tree. The 1974 documentary Animals are Beautiful People showed the 3-ton mammals swaying and falling over after binging on the fruit. In 2006, post mortems on 40 songbirds found dead in Vienna, Austria, showed their bellies were full of rotting berries and their necks were broken after crashing into windows. According to a spokesperson for Vienna’s veterinary authority, their livers were so badly damaged “they looked like they were chronic alcoholics.”The Malaysian pen-tailed tree shrew however, has evolved to survive on the fermented nectar of the bertam palm, which can reach around 3.8 per cent ethanol. These rat-sized creatures can drink as much alcohol for their weight as a human knocking back nine beers in one sitting, without showing any signs of drunkenness. The animals spend about two hours per night guzzling the alcoholic nectar. Sound familiar? Anyway, must go. I have a desire to experience an altered state of consciousness.
