Hi Readers Well it was back to school for all the International schools this month, so in this issue of the Trader we have an education special looking at the newly published QS Rankings for the world’s top universities. Also a report on the exciting “F1 in Schools project” coming to Thailand and of course we congratulate St Andrews International on yet further success with their outstanding IB results. So while the kids are at school maybe there’s more time available for Keeping Fit? Kevin Cain looks at the options when you work a 9 to 5 and for something a bit more “full on” there’s a report on the Kombat Group on page 52. If all that activity makes you hungry - how about a great Sunday Roast from The Corner House in Jomtien featured in this magazine’s - Dining in Detail pages 36 & 37?.It’s also a great place to watch your favourite sports such as football, which Glenn Cowan has some thoughts on in his article about England’s hopes for the World Cup on page 38. If you haven’t done so already don’t forget to go to bizawards.pattayatrader.com and vote for your favourite in each of our categories and finalists get your votes in from your clients and customers. Best of luck !

By Kevin Cain
T
rying to work full time to pay the bills and also attempting to keep your body healthy and strong is not an easy proposition. As somebody who became all too aware of the consequences of not staying healthy whilst living such a lifestyle, I would advise readers who are in this situation to set some time aside to exercise.
Waking up early to squeeze in a workout or waiting until the busy work day is over to head to the gym, is much easier said than done when all you really want to do at the end of the day is kick back and possibly go somewhere nice for dinner. However this article details some tips and tricks that will help point you towards a more active and healthy lifestyle even whilst holding down a 9 to 5 job. It has been estimated that the average office worker only takes 3,000 steps a day and the recommended activity is at least 10,000 steps. So even if you are not working a 9 to 5 but still feel your average daily tally of steps is nearer the 3 than 10,000 then here are 5 Pattaya Trader tips for staying healthy
• Stay hydrated
Although not actually helping to burn calories, drinking water is an essential component of wellness at work. Drinking 2/3 litres of water a day can help to control hunger, energise the muscles, cleanse the skin and keep the kidneys and bowel healthy.
• Going to the gym at lunchtime
With a little planning it is possible for a 30 min gentle workout at lunchtime. Obviously here in Thailand make sure you opt for a gym that has air conditioning and shower facilities. But if you can manage some physical exercise in the middle of the day you will feel rejuvenated and ready for the afternoon and everything it throws at you.Prepare the night before, pack your kit, pre-prep a healthy sandwich and make your way down to your nearest gym.
• Prepare your meals ahead of time
This does not seem a very obvious point to get fit and stay healthy, but if you prepare an appetising and healthy pre-packed lunch you will tend not to visit the local 7/11 and eat microwaved processed food.It is easy, whenever you or your partner are preparing for the previous evening’s meal to just add a little extra and if getting up at the crack of dawn is not enticing, prepping meals in advance is the easiest and healthiest way to make a difference day to day.

COVER STORY
Your metabolism works like a fire, by starving it problems can arise and the flame dies, thus no calories are burnt. By overloading it with fuel the metabolism cannot burn off enough calories and so you start gaining weight. The best way of feeding your metabolism is by eating healthily and regularly, this keeps the fire active and in the best condition.
• Partner up and have fun
Exercising can be a chore, everybody feels better after a workout, but trying to get the motivation to actually exercise in the first place can be hard. One way to feel the incentive to take exercise is to buddy up, if you have a training partner it is much easier to find the inspiration for each other to actually partake in gym trips, jogs or any other activity. Having a buddy is a great way to keep motivated and also importantly, supported. With two people, different activities can come into play to vary the exercise. And whilst doing so you can encourage one another to put that little bit more effort into a session. Or you can get a Keep Fit App on your phone - just to give you a daily reminder and nag !
• Stay active in the office
One of the killer attributes to an unhealthy lifestyle is the dreaded office. Perhaps you cannot get to a gym when you would like, so keeping active at the office can be an achievable and refreshing way to make a difference to your health.Fo example try standing as much as possible when you are in the office, stop Skyping and walk to your colleague's desk for a chat. Taking time off from staring at a computer screen is always good for resting your eyes. Also find ways you can use the office environment to help you exercise, it is time to think out of the box and use your imagination. A lot of good can be done in just 10 minutes of exercise. Don't be coy, once your colleagues have got used to you burning up calories they will probably all join in.You can try dips off an office chair or table, squats against the wall, lunges around your desk, leaning push ups against the wall or wide grip pushups against a door frame.Encourage your colleagues to join in the fun, see what new exercises they can dream up and keep a record of how everybody is doing week by week. Ultimately, the key to keeping your office / fitness life balance is all about doing little bits of exercise on a regular basis, you will find that you feel, work and sleep better. Realistically the best time for exercise is in the morning but for desk jockeys this simply might not be an option. The answer to all this is to try and do whatever physical exercise you can practically do during the week and use the weekend time to really make the difference. It must be pointed out at this stage that you should start exercising with regard to your age and physical health. Do exercise that suits you personally, you should achieve a mild sweat whilst engaging in the activity but if anymore than this, then caution should be applied. The best forms of exercise for the over forties involve long walks, swimming, gentle cycling and aerobic activities that gently stimulate the heart and also engage the metabolism. All this is available for free down at your local beach, be it Jomtien, Wongamat, Pattaya or Na Jomtien and you can have great fun joining in. The whole point of this article is to make you think about your current situation, are you in a position where you have fallen into lethargy and entered into an unhealthy lifestyle? Then perhaps you should consider bringing a little remedial action into your life sooner rather than later !

F1 in Schools is the only global multidisciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to Collaborate, Design, Analyse, Manufacture, Test, and then Race miniature compressed-air-powered Formula One cars out of the official F1 Model Block. The Challenge Founder and Chairman and the Thai businessman have started contractual discussions to take F1 in Schools forward in Thailand. Andrew Denford has appointed Chakrit “John” Thararam as in-country coordinator for Thailand. In his role, John will be under-
Speaking of introduction Andrew Denford said, “It is a need to create Engineers of the future and to satisfy the demand of Thai industry to have better qualified and inspirational Engineers who are ready for the world of work. F1 in Schools does all of that because of the nature of the programme. We deliver Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the classroom in a fun and exciting way. We are running in 44 countries around the world and have succeeded in so many countries and improved the quality of the students that are leaving schools.” Plans are being made by Chakrit “John” Thararam, in-country coordinator for Thailand, for F1 in Schools to take off by locating some pilot schools and to get the initiative launched by 2017. Ultimately the plan is to get the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education in order to disseminate the programme across the whole of Thailand’s national school network. The next F1 in Schools World Finals will in be held in Austin, Texas on October 1619, 2016 and in. fact be the 12th World Finals event with the USA hosting the event for the second time, having first welcomed the World Finals to the country in 2013. “F1 in Schools has the support of the Formula One community worldwide and we are proud to be a part of it at Circuit of The Americas. The World Finals is a once in a lifetime experience for students that allows them to dig deeper into their intellectual curiosity and application of knowledge,” said Bobby Epstein, co-founder and chairman of Circuit of the Americas. “F1 in Schools is a challenging, fun and educational experience for students that will inspire them to become the next generation of scientists and engineers.” Jason Dial, President, Circuit of the Americas, adds, “We are very proud, once again, to be hosting this upcoming year’s F1 in Schools World Finals. I look forward to welcoming Champions from all over the world to Texas. See “I look forward to welcoming one or two Thai teams at the next World Finals event in 2017,” concluded Denford.

S
o here comes September when the rainy season really kicks into gear. In fact the rainy season in Thailand can be a tough time if you’re not prepared for it. It’s the low tourist season for a reason as many travelers don’t want to get wet, have to alter their plans due to inclement weather or find themselves held up in bars and restaurants due to downpours. However expats in Thailand can often feel that the inconvenience of frequent rain showers can reap rewards. This season strips humidity from the air after rainfall making the air fresher and the heat more bearable. Rainy season also makes the beaches less crowded, hotels less expensive and can give rise to more bargain offers around town. In fact the rainy season can actually be quite OK if you are comfortably prepared for it. Here’s how:
Have a good Umbrella It’s really easy to find things for cheap in Thailand, but an umbrella during rainy season is not one thing you should skimp on. The last thing you want is your third 300 baht umbrella to break again, right in the middle of a downpour.Spend more to get more uses and less accidents and it’ll pay for itself. We recommend something small with emphasis is on the word “compact” as pavements in Thailand tend to be quite narrow and you may have to drop, dip and duck with your brolly to avoid taking someone’s eye out. Also you want something that’s easy to carry around on a daily basis as you really never know when the skies will suddenly open up.
Wear the right Shoes Since your feet are the first parts of your body to get wet during rainy season, it’s important to invest in the right shoes. Of course you’ll want something waterproof, but there’s more to it than that. Flip flops are absolutely the worst shoes you can wear during rainy season as they can easily slip off your feet and have no traction making you slip and fall. These are the shoes that you’re most likely to lose while walking through a puddle, so get shoes that can be strapped on or secured somehow to avoid losing them. However shoes that catch water, like boots, boat shoes or slippers will make you feel like you’re still standing in a puddle even though the rain ended an hour ago. If you must wear shoes like this, bring an extra pair of socks as nothing is worse than spending a day with wet feet. Yuck!
Have suitable clothing Leather is the worst thing you can possibly wear during rainy season, so avoid this at all costs. Not only will it shrink on you while you’re wearing it, it’ll also make you hot, sticky, and will lose its shape and of course avoid suede which will stain easily in the rain.

Certain fabrics are highly absorbent, stick to the skin when wet, and dry slowly or just stay wet and with so many fabric blends available these days it’s not always easy to know what clothes will be best for the wet weather. So one way to test them is to wash your clothes and let them air dry outside, check back on them in a half hour and see what’s damp and what’s almost dry. Remember that uneven surfaces can create deep and unavoidable puddles, so you may have no choice but to walk through one. In this case, it’s best to wear shorts or skirts that are knee-length or higher to avoid soaking up the puddle.
…..and suitable accessories Hats that have a wide enough brim to prevent water from streaming into your eyes are incredibly helpful to wear, whether you have an umbrella or not. Just get something that you like, because the humidity will inevitably give you hat hair and you’ll end up wearing it all day. Or if you have an umbrella and don’t want hat hair, sunglasses with light lenses can help keep the water out of your eyes and will still allow you to see on darker days. Remember contrary to popular belief, rainy season does not mean that it will rain for two or three months straight. It just means you may see showers in the mornings, evenings, or different times of the day. However, when it does rain it pours and you don’t want your electronic accessories to fall victim of that. If you can’t find a waterproof cell phone case or a small ocean-bag to keep it in, make sure you always carry a fresh plastic bag in case of sudden downpours.
Stay safe If you get caught outside in the rain and lighting begins to strike, you must avoid water and high ground. Avoid open spaces and all metal objects, including electric wires, fences, machinery, motors and power tools, etc. Whatever you do don’t stand under a tree! Find shelter in a substantial building or in a fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car, truck or a van – not a Tuk Tuk! Rather than sprint home to get inside as quick as possible, be safe and duck into a supermarket of 7/11 for shelter. Better to wait 15 minutes than break a leg!
Remember 4 legged pals Many street dogs and feral cats struggle during the rainy season. Their normal environment is disrupted; sleeping spots are wet and uninhabitable and food in short supply due to less people traffic and floor food washed away by the rain. Put some food out for that local mutt that looks a tad on the thin side or the kitten that miaows each time you walk past.

Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world with a common goal “a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces”. In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend PILC function such as:
Cocktail Making with PILC
The Centara Grand Mirage Resort has recently been hosting lots of different workshops for the ladies of PILC. These have included cooking classes, spa sessions and a number of other activities. They even had one for cocktail making when the PILC ladies were allowed to bring husbands and friends along – just so long as they were willing to create, and drink, the three different cocktails prepared. . Everyone being led to the beach and shown how to make three very different drinks both sour and sweet. The hotel also made sure that there were tasty-bits of food to hand and even arranged a fire-show as a fantastic finish to a wonderful evening.
Cake Baking with PILC
Also 13 ladies attended a baking class organised by The Centara where they were greeted by David Novak, the Executive Assistant Manager, Food and Beverage and Chef Supat in the hotel’s pastry section , who taught them how to make delicious Red Velvet cupcakes. Chef Supat began the lesson by introducing the various ingredients, followed by a short demonstration. Pretty soon all were busy adding and mixing the mixtures like pros and the cupcakes turned out to be a huge success! Once the freshly baked cupcakes had cooled down they were decorated with whipped cream and various candies (a couple of the ladies were caught snacking when no one was looking!)
PILC Coffee Morning
Another ‘free’ PILC Coffee Morning was held at Liz Shepard’s lovely home when all the ladies attending brought a small plate of food to accompany the coffee and other drinks provided. True to form, there was a huge amount of food, the table heaving with everything you could imagine. After much chatting and catching-up with those we hadn’t seen for a few months, it was on to the raffle and a total of 5,200 baht was raised. Don't forget newcomers coffee mornings are held from 11 am at Casa Pascal every last Monday of the month. For more info go to : www.pilc-pattaya.com-

CORNER HOUSE - ROMPHO MARKET, JOMTIEN
I
f you’re hankering for a Sunday roast but live in Jomtien and don’t want to travel into town there’s a new kid on the block. The Corner House bar at The Rompho market has made a bold move and against a trend of nearby bars looking sad,.lonely and decorating their frontages with “For Sale” signs, The Corner House bar has decided to invest and make a go of it.
To that end they have extended and modernised what was just a tiny little kitchen behind the bar to something capable of providing breakfasts, salads, burgers and most importantly of all Sunday roasts. For only 250 baht you can enjoy chicken, pork or beef with a surcharge of 50 baht for lamb and only an extra 25 baht for each additional meat allowing you a choice of a double, triple or even quadruple roast meal. Then with just enough room on the plate you can also enjoy roast potato, mash, carrots, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, brussel sprouts, stuffing and even a yorkshire pudding ! Also as someone who loves a relish, good to see plenty of apple sauce for the pork, Colman’s mustard to enjoy with the beef, mint for the lamb and plenty of delicious gravy.. Undoubtedly with this offer The Corner House (our house is your house) is bound to get really busy and even though you are seated in a semi open setting there are plenty of fans around and plenty of TV screens for a Sunday sports catch up. Considering the demise of Shenanigans and absence of many other providers of Sunday lunch in the area they are sure to do well. So be patient if they are busy and you have to wait a little while - better to know that your food is being carefully prepared rather than hear the instant ping of the microwaved meal!

When we visited, there was a soft menu being tried out and a delightful surprise that wasn’t shown,on it was a choice of Apple pie or Apple crumble with freshly (made from scratch) custard. The apple had a touch of cinnamon and the pie was warm and delicious - a complete memory jogger to “Mum’s homemade”.
In two weeks time there will be an official menu and I urge you all to go and try it.. . Your convivial host Stuart is no stranger to providing Sunday lunches. Back in the UK he ran a company providing daily roasts for home delivery and now in Jomtien he welcomes your comments and suggestions. After all if The Corner House is as keen to do as well in the kitchen as its team does in the pool league then they are sure to make a real go of it .

e’ve had the olympics, we’ve had the Tour de France, we’ve had Wimbledon and The British Open & US PGA, now it’s time for the real action to begin!….That’s right folks, it’s football…. And it’s coming home!! Big Sam’s gonna see to it. After the grotesque debacle that was “Woy” Hodgson & England in the Euro’s now is the time to turn our attention to matters more pressing. Namely the very first World Cup Qualifier for Sam Allardyce and his (new look) England XI. However, before we do let's have a quick reminder of some of the most disappointing elements during the ill-fated Euro 2016 tournament.
Disaster Zone Hodgson Lets hope that Sam doesn’t follow in the footsteps of his counterpart Hodgson and actually picks players that have been, well, err, ummmm, bloody playing! Case in point, Jack Wilshere, who made the team for France having only been on the pitch for 100 mins or so during the 2015-2016 season. Don’t forget Wilshere made the grade at the expense of in-form Leicester City player Danny Drinkwater. The midfielder had been one of the stand-out players in the midlands club's title winning heroics, but Roy decided to overlook this and go with the old school.I’m expecting Harry Kane to pick up some much needed international form (assuming that Andy Carroll doesn’t make the team at his expense!), while at the same time not being allowed ANYWHERE NEAR corner taking duties. C’mon Roy, what on earth was going through your mind? Sticking with the lightweight and zero confidence Raheem Sterling was yet another error of judgement, especially giving that players like Marcus Rashford and Ross Barclay had to sit out.Lest we not forget the embarrassment of Hodgson's final interview (the day after resigning) when he claimed “he didn't know why he had to give the interview” - to coin a well used Sky Soccer Saturday phrase - Unbelievable Jeff! Well Roy, the reason you had to give the interview was that the whole campaign was an utter disgrace, devoid of any passion. The same as it was in Rio Two years earlier, when you should have been dismissed by the incompetent & culpable buffoons at the Football Association.
Sam’s His Own Man The nation's hopes sees England's 16th manager since Sir Alf Ramsey’s world-cup winning squad get this campaign underway against “minnows” & currently 24 ranked Slovakia. Just seeing how revved up Sam was during the recent press conferences gives me a feeling that I haven’t had for quite some time where the national team is concerned. After all we’ve had top international pedigree managers (and Steve McClaren) in recent times and look where that has got us.

Sunday Sept 4th @ (11:00 PM) local time, saw the opening game in Group F for England in what can only be described as a disappointing showing to say the least.Despite having the lion's share (pun intended!) of the possession, England’s not so new look team had to be reliant on an Adam Lallana 95’ min strike. The Allardyce starting line-up included no less than 8 (Eight) of the players that saw England crash out in the knock-out stages of the ill-fated Euros. Thankfully he took the right option and dropped sick-note Wilshire from the squad altogether that lad really does need some game time under his belt and could also benefit from not getting knocked off the ball so easily if he is ever to feature for the national team again.
I Can’t Tell Rooney Where to Play!
After the game an upbeat Allardyce was found to be singing the praises of the England team, even going so far as to suggest that it was a good team performance. Question: Do the managers watch an entirely different game to you and I? When quizzed on why Rooney seemed to play so deep in midfield, the new England boss retorted “I can’t tell Rooney where to play”. Sam then went on to say that the Man U captain has far greater international experience than him and would know best. Seems a little odd to me, that one! Surprisingly England had only played Slovakia Four times in the past, producing 3 wins and 1 draw. Sadly the draw was in the Euro 2016 which saw then manager Hodgson “shuffle the pack” and put out an understrength team - we all know how well that worked out! Having got off to a good start the players confidence will be raised for some of the trickier games in the group stages - that said England tend to do really well in the qualifying and then go to s**t in the actually tourney. October sees a couple of qualifiers with a home match against Malta on Sat 8th (11:00 PM) and then an away to Slovenia on Tue 11th Oct (1:45 AM).Recent history would suggest that England should be looking to take maximum points from their opening Three games; however, as previously stated, qualification isn’t the part that England struggle with! To be fair though the WC qualifying won’t really get going until England take on the ‘auld enemy Scotland in November - expect some fireworks at Wembley that night!
Other Games of Note in Qualifiers
Scotland get off to a leisurely start in their qualifying campaign as they take on lowly Malta. On paper this has gotta be Three of the most comfortable points Scotland are ever going to have the chance of getting! Northern Ireland open their account with a tricky away day as they take on Czech Republic. This won’t be an easy game, despite Michael O'Neill acquitting himself very well in France. Also Wales should pick up maximum points at home to Moldova as they play their first competitive match since the heroics of the European Championships earlier this summer. Let us not forget that there are other matches that will create potential interest, notably in round 3 of the Asian Football Federation qualifying stages. Group B sees Thailand pitted against Australia, with Iraq, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates making up the other four.It will be a tall order for Thailand to make it to their first ever World Cup, given that there is only one eventual qualification position available. However, that won’t stop the locals from getting behind the team and cheering them on with a few beers! Talking of beers. All the usual locations will be running the England games, including the likes of the newly opened Retox Game On, Retox on Soi Lengkee, Legends Bar, The Lion Pub, I-Rovers et al. I might have sensationalised the headline a little (did it grab your attention?) - let’s all hope that it rings true this time,

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 2016
T
he Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is the world's most glamorous and prestigious horse race, and in 2016 for the very first time will move from Longchamp its home since 1920. There is no machiavellian reason for the departure, just that Longchamp is undergoing a major $145 million revamp. So where did the organisers choose to relocate this famous horse race? Really there was only one place that could host such an illustrious event, so naturally it is temporarily moving to the capital of the art of equestrianism, namely Chantilly. Chantilly stands out thanks to its majestic chateau and world-renowned Grades Ecuries. The estate's racecourse boasts one of the world's most stunning courses. Which covers the required distance for The Arc, which is a mile and a half. The Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe brings together the world's most talented thoroughbreds aged 3 and over. And The Arc reflects this being the world's richest turf race, and after the Dubai World Cup it is the richest horse race currently run, this year the purse money will be over $5.5 million. Every sport has its showpiece, Cycling has the Tour de France, Rugby and Football have their World Cup's and Racing has The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, there is no horse race that quite compares to The Arc, and the jewel in the crown of the racing world is the climatic point of every racing season. There is a lot more at stake in The Arc than an over inflated purse awarded to the winner, the winner will be highly sought after as a stallion, or brood mare if female, and for good reason. Racehorses are bred from a relatively narrow genetic pool, almost all of the world's half a million thoroughbreds are descendants from just 28 healthy, fit and fast ancestors born in the 18th and 19th centuries. And up to 95% can be traced to just one stallion – the Darley Arabian, born in 1700. Owners and trainers of winning horses at top classic races are not just looking for prize money they are also looking for the preservation of thoroughbreds through breeding. In racing, yesterday's heroes often produce the stars of tomorrow, and the winners list of The Arc features many illustrious relations. The 1999 winner of The Arc, Montjeu, sired Hurricane Run, who won the event 6 years later. Urban Sea having been the first past the post in 1993, gave birth to Sea The Stars, who went on to win

the legendary Group 1 race in 2009. Although genetics is not an exact science, it nevertheless goes some way to stamping out coincidence. It helps to have as much luck on your side when running the great race, but it is a well known fact that no horse has ever won The Arc by chance. Longchamp, and this year Chantilly, are not lottery National Hunt courses, they are purposely selective. The course at Longchamp not only crowns the kings and queens of the turf on the first Sunday in October, but also the most knowledgeable racing professionals. The stables a horse comes from and the trainer preparing them is a huge factor in producing a winner.Considered to be France's best trainer, Andre Fabre has saddled 7 winners in The Arc, which is a shining example for other owners in the world. Marcel Boussac saw his colours triumph 6 times between 1936 and 1949.A victory in the grandest of races, earns the winner a place in the history books for eternity. Nearly half a century after the famous Ribot and Sea Bird took the laurels, racing enthusiasts still compare present day winners to the merits of those two legendary past victors. The Arc is truly an international race by any standards, and although French trained horses usually win there have been 7 victories for English, Irish or German horses since 2000. Even the Japanese have embraced the race, proving that nowadays the racing elite do not hesitate to travel across the globe to take place in the world's most illustrious race.Last year's nail-biting edition of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was won by Golden Horn and Frankie Dettori, so who will win this year's most coveted of trophies in 2016? Presently, looking at the bookmakers odds and digesting all the relevant pre-race hype, everything seems to be pointing to a two horse showdown between Postponed and Harzand. Baring in mind that the race rarely throws up a bad winner, the vast majority of Arc victors were Group One winners before taking part in the race. Chantilly will require tactical speed, and one thing all winners have in common is a proper turn of foot at the end of the race. Scrutinizing the recent runnings of The Arc the race has been dominated by the younger horses with 9 of the last 13 being aged 3 years old, while nine of the last 13 winners came to race winning the last time out, can the winner of the race for the past 2 seasons, Treve, be the first horse to win The Arc three times? Taking the above into account, two more horses look very interesting. Both Golden Horn and New Bay have the correct temperaments and attributes to do well at Chantilly and should not be lightly dismissed. Whoever eventually comes out as victor of The 2016 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, it will be a deserved champion, one that has fused tactics, breeding and pure speed together to form an unstoppable, invincible hero of legendary prowess.

August 2016 PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold Matt the Star of the Day
T
here was a full field of 120 booked in, but following a few withdrawals & no shows we were left with 114 players, including a small field of 8 ladies. This month we returned to the Phoenix course, where we played the Lakes & Ocean combination. This was our first opportunity to play the recently refurbished & opened Ocean 9, & I must say the course was in good condition, with the Lakes continuing to improve in condition. Although the weather was hot & humid, there was a light breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace.
As in most months there is 1, or sometimes several outstanding performances for the tournament. This month that mention should probably go to Matthew Sneath (14) who took out the A flight (0 – 14) nett with a day’s best score for the men of 39 points, to go with his 2 technical prizes. A countback to the last 6 holes was required to separate Jeff Wylie (6) & Jim Groves (13) for the minor A flight placings. Jeff getting the nod 13/11, after both signed for 38 points, with 18 on the back 9. The B flight, for handicaps 15 - 20, was tightly contested, with all placegetters separated by only 1 point, Lee Adams (17) clear on 38 points, while after countback the placings were as follows, Neil Carter (16) in 2nd spot after edging Ian Walsh (17) into 3rd, 20/18 after both shot 37 points. Dave Barker (21) was the leader in C flight for handicaps 21+, with 38 points, by a clear 2 points over Lloyd Armstrong (24) with Kenny Chung (23) getting 3rd spot a further point behind on 35 points. H
i folks, Scott guys aboard Captain Deang’s boat have had a good couple of trips with an unusual mixed bag of fish being caught. It looks like the drought is over, maybe the fish came with the rainy season and I am not joking. The fishing over the Hin Pra Nang reef, 2 kilometres south of Koh Krok has been good, a lot of Russel Snappers, Striped Snapper and Four File fish. I used to call them Trigger fish but the internet says they are File fish and Frank’s biggest 4lb was half of the world record for a Scrawl File fish. These are rare visitors to the reef as in six years of fishing here they are the first. Out at the Koh Hoo Chang (elephant ear island) Frank and I have been getting into the Big Snipe (bpla grating). The usual size is 29 inches and a kilo in weight with the chance of a much bigger fish of high thirty inche, because of this we use 8lb and 10lb fluorocarbon leaders which will take more abuse than the 6lb stuff. The downside of this is when we saw a shoal of Horse mackerel (bpla thoo) on the surface we headed straight for them trolling thin strip of squid and did not get a hit. It’s amazing how much difference 2lb makes when you are hunting Horse mackerel. Now and again at Koh Hoo Chang we get bigger fish trolling. It was the first time I have been scared of touching the reel handle as it span round furiously. Normally I slow it down by using my finger against the bail arm this can hurt but if you get the fish it does not matter. This time the run ended and the fish got off, later this happened again. I have caught 3lb Horse mackerel and this run was much faster. Frank got a hit and he back cranked his reel as well as the drag was letting line go. I knew it was a bigger fish, I moved the boat now and again to keep the fish broadside to the boat. It took a huge amount of line, and started heading for shore just like a snipe but it had not jumped. Then it swam around the boat some 100 metres out. Thirty minutes into the fight Frank said that the fish was in control and he was just now able to turn his head. A powerful fish, as when it got within 5 metres of the boat it would turn and power away. Finally after forty minutes I netted a 4lb rainbow runner, and I could not believe it was only 4lb after all that action. Frank apologized for the time taken, I said I’d had enjoyed the action almost the same as he had. Great to see a class fish taken on light gear and no weight, made the

day! This is the fourth rainbow runner from here in six visits, in the last eight years of surface trolling around Koh Larn we had caught only three and of a smaller size. Fishing here has been great on a dropping tide and when the tide starts to rise zip. I have then gone to the south end of Koh Pia less than 2 kilometres north and trolled there only to be very disappointed in the results. Maybe because the last time I was there it was a small (about two foot) drop in tide but the usual area east in the shallows did not produce anything. As Frank pointed out we had gone a long way and we should stay and troll around the island. Sure enough, the west side gave more bites and fish than the east side. Moreover the south end towards the last of the drop gave us six of our biggest snipe of the day. Never live and die with that worked in the past, try different techniques but beware of the fishing gods. When you try something new it seems to work straight away, but when you repeat it, ah those fishing gods love to muck you about. Have fun, Roger

TOYOTA BOUNCE BACK AS ‘TSS 2016’ REACHES THE HALFWAY MARK
T
hailand Super Series 2016 has reached the halfway mark after making its second consecutive trip to Chang International Circuit. The return visit to the North East turned out to be an extravagant weekend too as in the headline category, Super Car GTM, the formbook was shaken on its head. Round 2 in fact turned out to be about just one team – Toyota Team Thailand – as the factory outfit dominated at the front with a ruthlessness that squeezed its rivals into the shade.
The opening round of the year back in May had been the preserve of the newly arrived Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo, with three wins out of three, but the return trip seven weeks later saw the running order shaken up as the signature red and white racing Toyota sportscars locked out the front row of the grid and then won both races to bounce right back into contention in the championship. There have been some tough times in the wilderness for Toyota in recent seasons but they are right back in business with a bang. Often left in the shadow of his hugely accomplished teammate, Nattapong Horthongkum claimed both pole positions and proceeded to win both races with ease while Nattavude Charoensukhawatana took a second and third place and that allowed Toyota to depart from Buriram at the top of the Teams’ standings. They're right in the Drivers’ and Teams’ title fights now – and clearly hungry. Lamborghini star and Drivers’ championship leader Sarun Sereethoranakul emerged from the weekend with a second and third place finish which allowed him to retain his title lead – and keep his margin at the top intact – so it was excellent tactical play from the man they all have to beat if they want to win the title this year. Starting his third year in Super Car, Sarun and his support team did exactly what they needed to and can clearly be very satisfied with the results. It’s his title to loose now, but he will have to keep grinding out the podium finishes to manage his points advantage – however it looks like Sarun knows exactly what he has to do to clinch the biggest prize in Thai motorsport. In the ‘new for 2016’ Amateur (AM) class Paul Kanjanapas cemented his grip on the top of the championship standings with a well judged victory in the second race to add to his four consecutive runners up spots this year. The AM class has been a big hit this year and Paul has emerged as a canny competitor, neat and tidy he’s kept his driving smooth and unfussy, avoided trouble and most importantly he’s significantly improved his pace when compared to last year. Meanwhile Thamrong Mahadumrongkul claimed the other AM win from the event with with that – quite comfortable in the end – victory coming on his debut in the class. There were a couple of very welcome new faces on the GTM entry list, former Super 2000 regular Supachai Weeraborwornpong made a one off appearance in the eye-catching Lamborghini Gallardo he raced in the brand’s Super Trofeo Asia series last year while Tosaphol Phamyai slipped into one of the NSports-built Nissan GTRs as the striking machine, dubbed ‘Godzilla’, made its first competitive appearance of the year. However ‘Round 2’ wasn’t just about the biggest racing ‘Super Car’ beasts here, a number of the supporting categories grabbed a heck of a lot of attention including TCR Thailand, which held its second ever pair of races, and 'guest' series Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, joining the programme in the North East for a second consecutive year. In TCR Thailand for the first time Vattana Motorsport swelled up to two cars and that second car was in the hands of top Thai driver Narasak Ittritpong who promptly won the first race after planting his No 13 Honda Civic on pole before showing everyone a clean pair of heels when the lights turned green. The entry list for the weekend also included a new international driver who joined the frontline Krating Daeng Racing Team as they swelled up to a full compliment of three cars. The driver in question was Alexander Mies and the German racer was a pretty logical choice as he already has a strong connection with the team – and he left his mark with a trip to the podium. Porsche Carrera Cup Asia meanwhile brought a plethora of international star names into Thailand to race the equally prepared the zippy Porsche 991 GT3 Cup machines and its races were nail-biting from start to finish. Both championships added something a little bit different to the programme and both certainly generated plenty of interest. Super Car doesn’t stop with ‘GTM’ either as the ‘second tier’ ‘GTC’ is bubbling along very nicely now and here Narasak, fresh from his TCR victory, capped a superb weekend, this time driving Vattana Motorsport’s new KTM X-Bow GT4.

He’s started to assert a vice like grip on the ‘junior’ category with two reasonably comfortable wins out of two races. Add that to his debut victory in the KTM during the season opener and he's bagged three wins out of the four races so far and at the season's halfway point he looks to have established a firm grip on the championship standings. With the just completed round at Bira and the final calendar date in Bangsaen both likely to better suit the KTM than Buriram did it was all very ominous for his rivals and it doesn't at the moment seem obvious where a challenge to him is going to come from.

ot so very long ago whilst I was still sporting a full head of hair and before journalism stole me away to other pastures, it was my good fortune, or not, to have been an English teacher. I was detailed to teach a class at the Mazda car plant near Amata City on the Eastern Seaboard. I had never before visited the vast trading estates just off Highway 7 and was quite amazed by the plethora of Multinational Blue Chip companies that had invested in Thailand. Just about every industry was represented from all the top global companies around the world. My first impression of the magnificent Mazda facility was one bordering awe, of course my classroom was in the spotless and very high-tech office wing of the factory, but the futuristic and modern theme seemed to continue everywhere. The visitor is first greeted by a huge, glass fronted atrium that looks out on the manicured lawns encompassing the driveway. Two gleaming brand new Mazda models in shimmering metallic crimson red greet you as you enter. I have always liked Mazda cars, even back twenty years ago when Japanese design was not quite what it is today. I actually owned one of the revolutionary RX-8 models which was one of my favourite ever cars, but standing out from the range was always the little two-seater roadster the MX-5.The MX-5 was first announced to the world at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989, with all the bland jelly mold designs churning out of factories it was a delight to see what looked in essence like a proper old-fashioned English sports car. The lightweight, two-seater, roadster with the engine mounted in the front and rear wheel drive was a breath of fresh air to the motoring world. It was designed to have minimum mechanical complexity so it would do one thing that the old English sports cars of the past sometimes were not particularly good at, it would not break down, the MX-5 was reliable as an old armchair. Also the MX-5 has always looked stunning, it is the pure simplicity of the design that is the beauty of the vehicle. No protruding flared wheel arches or garish rear spoilers, it came from the same classy breeding stock as the splendid Triumph Spitfire or the legendary Lotus Elan. So it is fitting and proper that such a classy motor, twenty seven years after it first rolled off the production line was named as the 2016 World Car Of the Year. This new 4th generation MX-5 Miata is lighter and more compact than it's predecessor, and it beat two very strong contenders to win the coveted award, namely Audi's new A4 and the Mercedes GLC.

Mazda cite that the key to the success of the new MX-5 is the latest development of Skyactiv technology which continues to set new benchmarks in automotive engineering in both the 1.5 and the 2.0 litre versions.Agreed it is not particularly the fastest sports car on the road, and it perhaps it does not offer the high specifications of a BMW or Mercedes. But the cost also reflects this and it is affordable to all. The Mazda MX-5 is made and designed to do what all its predecessors did, and that is to have fun and enjoy motoring. You are just as likely to see a man wearing a cloth cap as a young boy racer driving this classic car. And that is its beauty, the Mazda MX-5 is a car just about everybody likes and all and sundry can drive it, and more to the point everyone will look the part. Also the Mazda RX-VISION has won the 2016 Car Design Award in the concept car category for the most noteworthy contribution to the evolution of automobile design. This is another striking sports car accolade for Mada’s sport’s car prototype as it also won “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” at the 31st Festival Automobile International held in Paris back in January. Kevin Rice Mazda’s european design director said when accepting the recent prize at the Turin Motor Show:
“Obviously I’m delighted at the recognition we’re getting at Mazda for our efforts, not only in the design arena but also for the technology that enables our vehicles to live up to what their looks promise”.

s Pattaya gears up for the marine event of the year The Pattaya Boat show 2016 in November, we here at Chaiyapruk Towers thought it might be a good idea to focus upon one of the most desirable yachts on the market today, namely the Sunseeker Predator 115. Let's face it, the Predator 115 is a really cool looking, with its black hull looking aggressively menacing as it cuts through the waves, like a shark seeking prey. Smaller than her sister the 130 it has enabled Sunseeker to reduce the price somewhat, whilst at the same time there is plenty of flybridge and foredeck space giving the impression you are on a much larger yacht. The Sunseeker Predator trademark angular windows feature heavily and combined with the black hull and the white superstructure accentuate the lines all designed to give the effect of forward motion. The main saloon is to say the least opulent, with a retractable TV dividing the dining area which seats up to ten guests. The galley is placed just forward of the dining area and has a well equipped kitchen with enough huge fridges and freezers to store enough supplies to last a minimum of a week. One of the main features of the yacht is the full beam owner's suite. This is luxury you would expect from Sunseeker, it has a huge shower with side spouts and a large bathtub with multiple water jets. Descending to the lower deck, there is a small lobby and four guest cabins, which can be doubles or twins. Sunseeker say it is possible to merge two of these cabins to form a second master suite. All the cabins are ensuite and have walk-in closets. But the Predator 115 keeps it's real jewel and prowess so everybody can see, the flybridge is a jewel. The helm station is the focal part of the yacht, there is a very extensive wet bar and grill service station on the port side, set against a huge settee. Aft, there is a centrally-aligned jacuzzi with a glass side facing forward. This is surrounded by a number of sunpads for soaking up the rays. The Predator series is part of Sunseeker's performance yachts, and although the 115 is not particularly the fastest around it still has a very respectable top speed of 26 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 20 knots. At ÂŁ9.1 million, the Predator 115 provides a very economical superyacht solution, as its bigger brother the Predator 130 comes in around ÂŁ13.7. Buyers of the 115 will certainly get a great deal for their money and that is why it is becoming a very popular choice in Asia.

o you want to feel better, have more energy, and live longer? Engaging in regular physical activity can do all of these things, and Kombat Group is the local place to do it. Regardless of your age, sex, skill level, or physical condition this gym has something for everybody with courses in Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, and Tactical Fitness amongst others. Kombat Group opened in 2005 and has steadily improved its martial arts courses to put more focus on weight loss and detoxing the body’s systems naturally. This expansion prompted the gym to move from the bustling city to the outskirts of Pattaya to a facility with a better atmosphere where everyone can focus on his or her personal goals. Despite its recent growth, Kombat Group is still able to offer the very thing that makes it unique among other gyms--a flexible, personalized approach to each individual’s fitness needs. The primary courses at Kombat Group are Muay Thai and Western Boxing which both have two sessions per day, morning and afternoon, to accommodate various schedules. Whereas Western Boxing involves throwing combinations of fists, Muay Thai training allows for a total body workout as the sport uses fists, elbows, knees, shins, and feet to deliver powerful strikes. All courses are taught by dedicated champions including Christian Daghio who is a six-time Muay Thai champion and two-time belt winner in Western Boxing. Each trainer will push you until you achieve your very best. Kombat Group offers several other courses as well, all which fuse Thai methodology with a western approach to yield optimal performance and results. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) combines a variety of close combat techniques to create a highly effective and versatile martial art that is growing in popularity around the world. Kombat Group has a full-size MMA cage and courses are taught by highly skilled and experienced instructors who are professional MMA fighters. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art which favors skill over size making it suitable for anyone. Students learn proper techniques and maneuvers to gain a physical advantage during sport or self-defense. BJJ increases endurance, flexibility, and coordination while promoting self-defense without the practice of violence. This course is taught by an instructor with a purple belt in Jiu Jitsu. Another great course for learning self-defense is Krav Maga, an Israeli system that combines martial arts techniques with realistic fight scenarios. Krav Maga teaches you how to efficiently defend yourself from a variety of real-life physical attacks whether an assailant is using bare hands, a knife, broken bottle, or gun. Also this year

Kombat Group developed a special Women’s SelfDefense course that empowers women to defend themselves against the most common types of attacks by using a combination of Muay Thai, Krav Maga and BJJ/grappling techniques. Not only does it teach a woman how to identify and effectively prevent dangerous situations, but if there comes a time when an attack is unavoidable then the woman knows that she is well prepared. Regular training helps to avoid the shock and panic that typically occur during an attack and allow a woman to skillfully use her body against an attacker.
Self-defense techniques are more effective when the body is kept in good condition, and Kombat Group has several courses to improve overall fitness through strength and endurance training. The Functional Training course uses high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for cardiovascular exercise. HIIT is a very popular method used to build muscle and burn fat by alternating short bursts of intense exercise with brief, less-intense recovery periods. Though challenging, HIIT is extremely efficient and burns more calories than aerobic activities done for double or even triple the amount of time. These shorter workouts are ideal for people with busy schedules. There is also a Tactical Fitness course which incorporates HIIT, but does so with functional athletic movements like lifts, carries, crawls, and runs that carry over to real-life scenarios. Tactical fitness is the type of training often used by military and police, but it can be beneficial for anyone by improving strength, muscle stamina, speed, endurance, flexibility, and analytical thinking. Because gym staff understand the importance of regular physical activity throughout the lifespan they have recently increased course offerings for children. Children can train in Muay Thai with one course offered for children ages 6 to 9 and another course for children ages 10 to 12. Parents can also choose to enroll their child(en in BJJ for Kids which is held on Saturdays. Kombat Group recently participated in Jesters Fair, a local charity fair for children, on September 4th to introduce Muay Thai and BJJ techniques to a young audience. They held a showcase on stage demonstrating the strength, skill, and fun that can be attained with consistent training. In this digital age parents are recognizing the necessity for children to disconnect from phones, games, and gadgets to be physically active. However, adults can benefit from disconnecting as well. Knowing how stressful life in Pattaya can be, Kombat Group offers local residents an opportunity for a weekend of full-immersion in the weight loss and detox program which includes accommodations, training in all fitness and martial arts disciplines offered, and three meals per day. The meals are delicious and balanced to provide maximum nutrition based on the fitness program and dietary needs of each individual. Unlike other gyms, Kombat Group is actually a resort with amenities such as a private swimming pool, garden, and on-site restaurant. Soon it will open a sauna and massage center to improve athletic performance and muscle recovery. You can truly recharge your mind and spirit as well as your body. Kombat Group is currently offering local Pattaya residents a special deal for to participate in the weekend program at a discounted rate. To sign up for courses or learn more about the programs offered, visit kombatgroup.com or call +66 89 543 3450 Line ID kombatgroup.

Are we all gullible ? “Mathias in his late twenties is from Denver Colorado. It was the early spring of ‘98 and it was his first visit to New York. As he alighted the taxi in front of the impressive edifice that was the investment house he was entrusting his financial future to, he felt a slight sense of inferiority when he observed the slick men in their slick suits with their slick preppy accents. - He had inherited 20, million dollars after death and estate duties. From his own research and with recommendations from friends who had done some research on finance in college, he had come to the conclusion that this was the investment house for him When he was eventually seated in Mr. Wright’s office he was almost overcome with the aura of a fantasy world of absolute success and certainty. The deep pile carpets, the antique oak desk, the modern art gracing the walls and the two smart assistants one of whom interrupted to confirm that the “Deacon” case, whatever that was, had confirmed and the 200 million dollar transfer was being done now. Mathias was not a stupid man and he was happy to accept Mr. Wright’s recommendation to invest his money in a new internet company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) coming to market the following month. That’s where the deacon money was going after all. However, as he stood to say goodbye he glanced out the huge window overlooking the car park and was startled to see at least six Ferraris parked there. He didn’t know why but that view was quite unsettling. He would have been more unsettled had he known that Mr. Wright was getting paid both ways. from the IPO as the investment house as well as recommending the internet company were also handling the IPO. And of course the more money went in from the start the more successful for everyone involved except possibly for Mathias and his like. A few years later Mathias was one of 23 class action lawsuits who shared a 164 million dollar payout related to the investment house analyst’s activities research coverage. He felt grateful for the enforcement of the SEC So to cut a long story short, undaunted he headed back to Denver. It was now September 2005 and his beloved Broncos were starting at Mile High Stadium. As an active sports fan and a wealthy one again he knew stars like Terrell Davis, Steve Atwater, Rod Smith and Ray Crocker. At a charity function in Atlanta Mathias told his story to Terrell & Ray. They were dumbfounded and explained to Mathias that a few of the players had invested over 15 million dollars with an Atlanta based Hedge Fund called International Management Associates.(IMA)Mathias again jumped in feeling that if you were a friend of the stars you should act like them.

In December he wanted to withdraw 500,000 to buy a new house but the sword of Damocles struck again .IMA failed to honor withdrawal requests, misled investors as to the funds investment style and worse forged their names on checks that bounced when deposited in investor’s bank accounts.Mathias has not got a resolution to this case yet but going to print Judge T Jackson Bedford, a Fulton County Superior Court justice said he would freeze all of the assets of International Management said to be about 150 Million. So poor Mathias has another fight on his hands. We wish him good luck.”

If there’s one lesson to learn it’s never be influenced by flashy surroundings flashy people or showbiz personalities and famous sports people. We are all gullible at times but if you’re like me and your money did not come easy I feel sure you have no intention on letting it go easily.Mathias is a fictional character but the events built around his story are true.

“REGRETS NO REGRETS” Isolating yourself is terribly unhealthy. I decided to re-learn what foods I really like and what foods I eat because they’re just there. I discovered I don't have a sweet tooth (thank god!) and prefer more savoury stuff. It’s all about experimenting with your diet and figuring out what you can do without and what you really enjoy. How to set boundaries Not setting these allows anyone and everyone to trample over you whenever they feel obliged. You can't change people. No matter how hard you try, support, love, whatever... in the end people can only change themselves if they are willing to
I had a look at a recent survey carried out to gather the opinions of people in their twilight years asking what lessons they had learnt and what they might do differently in hindsight. Here are some of the comments made : To say no to things I don’t want to do. That I am capable of success. I spent so long doubting myself and not doing things because I didn't think I could. That other people don't care what you think. They're more worried about themselves, and you aren't the first thing on their priority list.
That I really should have brushed my teeth in the morning and just before going to bed as a kid. Now I have yellowish teeth, a bunch of fillings.. Letting go of anger. You'll have fights with your family, friends, and coworkers. You'll get angry at politicians or ideologies. But in the end it's all useless. Anger doesn't accomplish anything. Growing and learning take time - give yourself that time. Life is not made of snapshots and big moments, it's made of a continuous stream of experience
To save money. Now I'm always broke and I never have enough money for a back up plan.
How to enjoy physical activity and stick with it. I've never been "slim" but I definitely have been on the chubbier side for the last 16 or so years.
That the 'someday' you are waiting for, (you know, the one when your real life will start to happen) is happening right now.
No matter how nice you are to as many people as possible, there will always be that one guy who's mission itis to make your life hell.
If you let people take advantage of you they will.
Confidence goes a LONG damn way. With women, with jobs, with negotiation. Grow a backbone and your life will be leaps and bounds better.
Never lend out money that you can't afford to lose. Almost no one will put your needs first. It's your job to make sure that happens. Strike the balance between being nice without being a doormat. Too many people will take advantage if given half the chance. That's a tough one to learn. I've found that, instead of assuming malice, stupidity or ignorance is usually the truth. Very few people are actively terrible but a shocking amount of them are unaware of how their attitude and actions affect others. Similarly, don't apologize for things you know you didn't do wrong. Edit: to clarify, I don't mean you should never back down when you think you're right about something - I mean when you're 100% certain that something is not your fault or that you did not hurt anyone, it doesn't usually help to take responsibility for it. Never buy a house with a wet basement - one that's subject to flooding.
Being a compulsive liar and braggart is very distasteful. It won't help you be accepted or liked, and will in fact have the opposite effect That the Disneyesque happy ending never happens in real life. Very, VERY few people get to the point where everything falls into place "and they lived happily ever after." Don't hold a grudge personally, but keep it in the back of your mind to remind you to never underestimate how evil someone can be. Forgive and forget? Haha no no no, resent and remember. Guitar. Started teaching myself two months ago and find it to be very relaxing, rewarding and I look forward to playing everyday. This is my life. I need to live it right now. Don't wait till you've finished school. Don't wait till something else has happened. Live life today.
Should have stayed in shape.

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and back is becoming more and more popular as the demand is getting greater. There is growing commerce between the two great cities in business as well as tourism and as many Thai residents are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is increasingly popular to travel between the capital and the seaside resort. Development and upgrading of the motorway network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road transport. However, commuters should be aware that using this route is soon to get more expensive as a new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from Pattaya.
SOLUTIONS
So what options are open to the traveler should he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most westerners would automatically think of the train but do not expect Thai train services to match that of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily

It Seems Like Yesterday
I
still remember my first trip to Thailand some 18 years ago. There were ups and downs during that visit but the ups certainly outweighed the downs. You could say it was love at first sight; love for a country and people so different to everything I was used to. I also remember my second and third trips and wrote about one particular incident in my book A Fool in Paradise. Although it was long ago and far away, it seems like yesterday. I was on a flight from the Philippines to Australia after having spent a few days in Manila. With my twelve month valid return air ticket about to expire, it was time for a pilgrimage to Brisbane to visit my children, catch up with some old friends and visit the Thai Embassy for a new visa. The whole process takes about a week. Due to my late arrival at Manila airport check-in I was squeezed into one of the most uncomfortable of the economy class seats. Standard punishment for late arrival. This particular airline had gone to the extra trouble of making all the economy seats an inch or two narrower so they could cram more people in. The other passengers were obviously fully aware that my particular seat was the worst on the aircraft and I was sure I could hear the sniggering as I adjusted my seat belt. “That’ll teach him to be late!” I won’t mention the name of the airline as I may have to travel with them again and I don’t fancy sitting on the wing, even though after six hours in my seat, the wing began to look somewhat appealing. It happened as I was making the two hour time adjustment on my wristwatch. The pin holding the band to the face of the watch snapped. This was of no major concern, merely annoying. My watch had a gold-plated metal band with four pins holding it all together. I’d had it for two years and it seemed that the pins, made from some highly corrosive metal, took it in turns to break. In the heat and humidity of South East Asia, my sweat must take on toxic properties with devastating effect. Two years – six pins. Not a real problem. Easy to fix. I placed the watch in my top pocket and went back to squirming in my seat. My time in Australia was busier than anticipated but by the following Friday I was ready and keen to leave. I made my way into the city to pick up my return ticket to Bangkok (no e-tickets in those days) after having collected my Thai visa the previous day. With my airline ticket safely in my pocket I stopped for some lunch. It was only when someone asked me the time that I remembered my watch needed fixing. I had never needed to have my watch fixed in Australia before but since I was in the heart of Brisbane City, it seemed an appropriate place. There were several watchmakers and jewellers around and my first stop was one of the biggest name jewellers in Brisbane. “Can I help you, sir?”“Yes, the pin in my watch band has broken and I need it replaced.” “Oh, sorry sir, our watchmaker is off sick so we can not

do it today. Can you bring it back in tomorrow?”“No. I can’t come back tomorrow. It is only a simple job, isn’t there someone else who can do it?”“No, sir, we leave that to our professionals.”“Thanks.” Fifty metres down the mall there was another big name jewellery store. Inside, there were no other customers about so it should not take very long.“Certainly sir, we can fix it for you. Leave it with us and you can pick it up tomorrow afternoon after four o’clock.”“I can’t pick it up tomorrow. I’m leaving the country at eleven in the morning. It’s not a big job. Can’t you do it now?” “No sir. That watch requires a special pin and we don’t have one in stock. We can’t do it today.” I had long suspected that the pins in my watch band were special and now it had been confirmed. There was another watchmaker across the street so I decided on one last try.“Yes, sir, not a problem. Leave it here and it will be ready tomorrow morning after nine.”“But it is only a simple job and I need it now,” I pleaded.“Oh no, sir, this watch requires a special pin.”Again with the “special pin” routine.“Why is it so special? It is just an ordinary watch.”“Where did you buy it, sir?” “In Hong Kong. It was only one of twenty thousand I had to choose from.” “Aaaaaah, I see.”The condescending ‘you’re a Cheap Charlie’ look on his face said it all as he handed me back the watch.“Ok, so if I pick it up tomorrow morning, how much will it be?” “Twenty-five dollars, sir.”“Goodbye.”There was no alternative but to wait until I got to Thailand to see if anyone there could repair my special watch that three professional jewellers in Australia could not. The flight to Bangkok was uneventful. Different airline. Better seat. The taxi trip to Pattaya afforded the perfect opportunity to get some shuteye because I find it impossible to sleep on airplanes and, unless you are the driver, it is too frightening to watch the road ahead while motoring in Thailand. I woke up just as we reached my hotel. It was eight o’clock by the time I finished unpacking and drowning myself under a nice, warm shower. I decided to go out and meet up with some friends for a soothing ale to ward off jetlag and berri berri. Crossing Pattaya Central Road I noticed a lady sitting on a plastic stool behind a wooden bench. A glass case on the bench proudly displayed a diverse array of watch bands, locks and keys. Taking my watch from my pocket, I handed it to the lady asking, in bamboo English, “You can fix?” With a nod of her head she laid the watch on the bench then took out a petite hammer and a thin naillike object. A tap-tap here, a crimp there, and it was done. Four minutes later she handed me the repaired article.“How much,” I asked.“Twenty baht,” she replied looking rather apologetic. I would have paid her two hundred baht I was so grateful. This lovely lady, using rudimentary equipment, did in four minutes and for ninety Australian cents, what the three biggest jewellers in Brisbane could not do in under twenty-four hours and for under twenty-five dollars. And they have the hide to call Thailand a Third World country.
