Hi Readers Recently the BBC reported that: :Middle-aged people are being urged to walk faster to help stay healthy, amid concerns high levels of inactivity may be harming their health. Also,Officials at Public Health in the UK said the amount of activity people did started to tail off from the age of 40.They are urging those between the ages of 40 and 60 to start doing regular brisk walks.Just 10 minutes a day could have a major impact, reducing the risk of early death by 15%, they say. It is more and more important for us all to stay active especially here in Pattaya where the hot weather can always be an excuse for not walking quite as much as we should,. So in this month’s Trader we look at ways to stay healthy and take care of ourselves. Many may choose to join a gym and while not necessarily achieving the levels of physical perfection displayed by Flex and Anna the owners of Bear Gym in Soi Wat Boon, Jomtien, joining may at least be a start ! Or you may decide to team up with many of the sports clubs in and around town such as the Pattaya Archery club mentioned in Kevin’s article on page 32 , go fishing with The Highlander on page 38 or simply enjoy the benefits of a good massage page 19 and try to simply eat more healthily page 26 .. Wishing you all Health and Happiness Gloria Assoc. Editor

Drama At The World Championships
as Bolt & Farah Say Goodbye
I
t was supposed to a “night to remember” as the Shalamar song goes. Usain Bolt and Mo Farah were to both make their farewells at the World Athletics Championships held in London, and the athletics world waited with baited breath. Although both athletes planned to compete after the World Championships it would be at much smaller events and would not be together. So the stage was all set for both athletes to leave with a fond farewell on the World Stage with medals dangling down from their necks. However, as the evening transpired it was not quite as they both had hoped. Bolt was the first one up and could only manage to finish third in the 100m beaten by fellow Americans Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman, of course unpopular Gatlin is most remembered for cheating and having two drug bans from athletics, it was perverse it was him that stole the “lightning.” Bolt’s hope for a gold now rested in the relay, but this ended in disaster. With 50m left to go in the race, the unforgivable happened. Bolt deserved better, after all the enjoyment he has given to millions across the world to end his career with a hamstring pull was to say the least cruel. The capacity crowd were assembled to witness a lap of honour by Bolt to celebrate new medals won and a glittering career that shall never be eclipsed. The actual departure from the stadium was a sad sight, as a distraught Bolt was adamant that a wheelchair was not going to be his final farewell as the coaches and medical staff struggled to help him away. Controversy ensued later when relay athletes complained the injury was caused by Bolt having to wait too long to run. The organisers decided that the presentation for the women’s high jump was more important than the relay, and the runners were left out in the cold waiting. The 21st century has proved to be Bolt’s millennium, he has dominated the sport of athletics with complete disrespect to world records and by blasting past achievements apart. His celebrations will live in the memory forever, posing with his trademark “Lightning Bolt” stance and a flash of brilliant white teeth illuminating stadiums all over the world. It is hard to exaggerate his popularity as he is loved by young and old from all four corners of the globe. The evening did not quite pan out as the British favourite Mo Farah expected either. Farah is possibly the only athlete that could compete with Bolt as far as achievements and popularity goes, but it was not to be his night either. It was in Farah’s last 5k race ever, that he fell foul to a well hatched plan by his Ethiopian competitors. Farah had won this event a staggering ten times before, and the London crowd were hoping for an eleventh.

Issue 202 | SEPTEMBER 2017
SPORT & LEISURE The Ethiopians had a “cunning plan” that one would fall on his sword and sacrifice his own race so his colleague could beat Farah. And it worked superbly, Muktar Edris took the gold and Farah had to settle for the Silver medal. It was a second blow to the expectant throng as another favourite had been foiled in their efforts to finish their careers in jubilant fashion. Perhaps the shooter on the grassy knoll who hijacked Bolt, and Dick Dastardly and Muttley the rotten culprits that scuppered Farah, who will ever be remembered on a night that spoiled millions of viewers hopes. Real sports fans love to say goodbye to their heroes in a proper fashion, and the night of Saturday the 12th of August was a bitter blow not just to the fans, but also the athletes themselves, everybody deserved better. The fact that the home crowd had plenty to cheer with multiple medal successes for Britain on the night, did not really balance up the feeling of injustice. Tears of pity and not joy were the order of the day. But rather than wallowing in a pool of despair, a look at both athletes incredible achievements is bound to bring good cheer. Bolt achieved something at the Rio 2016 Olympics, that will probably never be repeated, he won an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic 100m, 200m and 4x100 relay triple. One sports journalist commented, “Bolt can become Immortal” referring to his attempt at Rio, after his first win, his reply was pure genius, “Two more medals to go and I can sign off Immortal.” Mo Farah was recognised for his contribution to British athletics by collecting a knighthood in 2017. He sprang to fame in 2012 in London with double victories in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, and duplicated this Olympic feat in 2016. Only Farah and the brilliant Lasse Viren have ever done this. Of course these are only the Olympic highlights from both athletes, many World, European and Championship records also adorn their careers. For Bolt and Farah to grace the track at the same time was rare good fortune for everybody who had the chance to see them race. Both had one thing in common and that was sheer determination, their styles were very different but the results the same. Everybody will have their own favourite and to be brutally honest it will be Bolt that will probably remain most in people’s memories. However, this should not detract any from what Mo Farah has achieved. It is just such a crying shame that the 12th of August did not live up to all the expectation, as it would have been a fitting finale for two titans of the athletics track to bow out as they should have done, with the crowd on their feet applauding and cheering two of the 21st century's best ever runners.

ou would think that because Thai food is freshly sourced and cooked that it is obviously healthy but many dishes are high in sodium, sugar, fat, and MSG. They are also heavy on carbohydrates and light on protein although there are some healthier options usually using grilled chicken, fish, vegetable and salads. For example: Khao Man Gai (Chicken and Rice) This is basically chopped chicken breast on top of a portion of rice with a small bowl of soup on the side and a plate of Thaistyle vegetables. This is one of the healthiest of the cheap eating options to be found at street food vendors. Mind you the quality of the chicken can vary and of course if there is an option of fried or non-fried it’s healthier to go with the non-fried. It’s also advisable to eat your Thai food as spicy as you can stand it because chillies contain capsaicin; which can lower cholesterol and help burn calories by boosting your metabolic rate. If you’re on a diet you should try to avoid stir fried noodle dishes and instead opt for the broth-based soups . Regrettably many delicious Thai curries are very calorific especially Massaman as they contain sugar and coconut milk and it’s always best to go for steamed rather than fried rice. However a very spicy healthy salad is:
Som Tam ส้มตำไทย (Papaya Salad)
ThIs can be said to be an acquired taste but never the less is a pretty healthy dish being made from freshly sliced papaya, tomatoes and string beans,,mixed with fish sauce, chilies, and spices. It’s low in calories, low in carbohydrates ,high in fibre and vitamin C and is sometimes served with shrimp and garlic.
TOM YUM GOONG (prawns) NAM SIGH (Hot and Sour Soup) There are two versions of this soup Tom Yum Nam Kon is the coconut creamy version and Tom Yum Nam Sigh the clear, healthier version. It is a hot and sour soup that can come with either fish or chicken cooked with ginger, mushrooms, garlic, lemon grass, chilies, and a number of other Thai herbs.Tom Yum Goon, has prawns added Tom Yum Gai chicken.

FOOD & DRINK
Gai Yang (Marinated Grilled Thai Chicken) A Thai version of grilled BBQ chicken. The chicken is basted with sauce and then cooked rotisserie style .You are getting a good amount of protein here as half a chicken, is about 500 calories / 100 grams of protein. Chicken or pork skewers are also available and healthy eating options.
Thai Fresh Fruits It is possible to get plenty of locally sourced fruits such as Pineapples, watermelon, mangos, melons, coconuts, bananas and lychee. Many of these fruits are seasonal and become more expensive during their offseason but with fruit carts everywhere around town that even cut and prepare the fresh fruit for you there is really no excuse not to pick up a small bag of fruit in preference to a chocolate or ice cream .
Pla Nueng Manao (Poached Fish with Lime) Poached fish is a good source of protein and in this dish a steamed whole fish is boiled in a lime dressing. Often enough for a couple of people depending on the size of the fish
Kuay Teow Lui Suan (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวลุยสวน) (Fresh Spring Rolls) These are fresh vegetable spring rolls stuffed with lettuce, basil, and minced meat (can be chicken, pork or shrimp). Served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce it’s low in calories, and really tasty .
Gai Pad Mamuang (Stir Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts)
Pad Pak Bung Fai Daeng ผัดผักบุ้งไฟแดง (Stir Fried Morning Glory with Oyster Sauce) Always good to eat your greens ! Morning glory (or water spinach) is often stir fried with oyster sauce, chilies and fermented bean paste it is high in iron, vitamin A ,Vitamin C, and calcium..
www.pattayatrader.com
One of the more healthy dishes this comprising chicken, cashews, and vegetables stir fried.sometimes with a sweet and sour flavour or otherwise there is a saltier versions which is less calorific. The chicken and cashews give a healthy dose of protein and the cashews are a good source of unsaturated fat. So in conclusion, as delicious as all the creamy curries and fried Thai food can be with a little self control it is possible to choose healthier dishes from the menu that can actually be quite delicious as well.

LINDA’S Welcome to this month’s edition of Dining in Detail when the Pattaya Trader’s roving reporters were delighted to return to one of Jomtien’s most iconic restaurants: “Linda’s”. For those who have just arrived in Pattaya or never venture out, then Linda’s is situated on the main Thappraya Road opposite Jomtien Complex. This restaurant has been serving the best quality food, with a Norwegian twist, since 2005 and is one of the most respected eateries in the whole of Pattaya. Specialising in fresh and seasonal food, Linda’s excels in Norwegian delicacies. We were therefore very excited because we had been specially invited to sample their most prized ingredient, namely the imported Norwegian Salmon. Out appointment was 1pm, and Linda’s already had a busy lunchtime trade, taking full advantage of the daily lunch menu. Linda sources her Salmon from a Norwegian / Japanese fish importing company in Bangkok, and only the finest and freshest fish are used to create her dishes, the superb taste reflects this. Among the delights of the Norwegian Salmon menu is an appetiser entitled “Duo of Smoked and Gravlax” together with Cream Cheese, Dill Stewed Potatoes & Mustard sauce. If it is a “lite bite” you are looking for then opt for the “Smoked Salmon Salad” with peppery Rocket and drizzled with Balsamic. Or a delightful “Smoked Salmon Sandwich” together with freshly baked granary bread.

As it was lunchtime we opted for two main meals featuring the freshest, boneless fillets of Norwegian Salmon. My choice was the “Poached Salmon with Buttercream Sauce” served with boiled potatoes and a crisp tangy cucumber salad. The pink flesh of the fish simply flaked away when I touched it with my fork and the accompanying creamy sauce was not too overpowering for the delicate flavour of the salmon. My colleague chose the “Grilled Salmon” which had a slight charring on the outside with almost a fine hint of Cajun spices. Again the fish was the star of the show and the distinctive salmon flavour was not lost in the sauce which was served separately. To my knowledge Linda’s is the only restaurant in Pattaya that has its main focus on Norwegian Salmon and for fish lovers who enjoy its authentic taste,Linda’s really is the only option. Another unique special is “Bacalao”. I was under the impression that this was a Portuguese dish but Linda educated me by advising that it originates from Norway. The “Bacalao” was presented impeccably and was a treat for the eyes. consisting of a firm salted dry cod fillet smothered in olives and garlic. It was accompanied by a complex tomato sauce consisting of New Zealand Green-Shell Mussels seasoned with cayenne. The combination of the firm white fish together with the deep flavoured sauce was a marriage made in heaven and the dish was simply “a winner!” We were delighted with the superb dishes that we had just eaten and as usual the service was friendly but very efficient. So when saying our goodbyes and feeling a lot fuller than we had when we entered the restaurant, we paused to give each other our opinions. Needless to say we were delighted with the fabulous food we had just eaten and wondered why we don’t frequent Linda’s more regularly ? But that is sometimes the case with familiar friends, we don’t go to see them as often as we should. My advice is, if you have not been to Linda’s for some time, go and see an old friend very soon, you will not be disappointed.

verybody is aware in this modern connected world how important it is to look after your body and in turn take care of your health. Health problems for obese or overweight adults and children are a major concern for over extended health services worldwide and because. of social media and the world-wide-web everybody is fully advised on what conditions can be brought on by being overweight. Heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer and depression can all be caused by excess body weight.Obviously we are all fully aware of what remedial action needs to take place if you do have an extra few pounds to lose. A combination of a healthy diet together with an active lifestyle will get you into better shape, and the longer you take to lose those pounds then the longer they will stay off, crash diets are never the answer. Living in Pattaya we are most fortunate, as the scope of outdoor activities available is almost second to none. Water based activities are foremost with all Pattaya’s beaches and the surrounding islands. However, because of the number of expats from around the globe that have settled on the Eastern Seaboard, there has been a demand for a variety of sports that are not found elsewhere in Thailand. Sports that are currently available in and around the Pattaya include: golf, football, rugby, polo, archery, bowling, petange, tennis, badminton, cricket, hockey, volleyball, sepak takraw, table tennis, squash, and cycling. In addition to all these there are a plethora of gyms and personal fitness options such as running, walking and weight training that can easily be taken advantage of. The key to keeping fit is motivation and finding the time each day to allocate to it. One of the best ideas is to either join a club or play a team sport. In this way you will have colleagues to egg you on when perhaps your inclination is not at its highest.
One such club is Pattaya Archery Club, which has been operating in Pattaya for over a decade. They actively encourage all levels of archers from novice to fully fledged experts, and you don’t even have to have your own equipment. Pattaya Archery Club is actually a non-profit making club and exists to give an opportunity to everybody to try the sport. The members are gathered from all over the world and are a mix of retired expats together with younger people who are either staying or working in Pattaya. Pattaya Archery Club also actively encourages Thai nationals to try the sport for the first time and to get involved in a friendly and convivial sporting club atmosphere. For those who prefer to work out in a gymnasium and change their body fat into a little more muscle, then Pattaya is ideal. There are gyms located all over Pattaya and range from leisure clubs at five star hotels, to free gyms on the beach. People should be aware that turning up at a gym after a long period of inactivity can be precarious. It is possible to easily do more harm lifting weights than good. If you have not been to a gym for a long time or are not familiar with the equipment, then you need to understand fully how everything operates and how you should exercise.

One of the better and most popular gyms in Pattaya is Bear Gym in Jomtien. For beginners there are always professional coaches at hand to ensure you are using the equipment correctly. Novices and long term absentees are advised to take advantage of the personal training services which also includes general dieting advice. You coach will consider your personal goals and objectives and then will tailor make a schedule especially for you. Which will include weight loss, stamina development, strength and functional training. Volleyball is another highly popular sport in Pattaya, and it gives the participants the benefit of playing in a team and all the advantages that go with that. By taking exercise whilst playing a team sport your mind is automatically taken away from the physical element of what you are doing. You are more focused in defeating the opposition rather than how long you have been actually exercising. It also gives the added impetus of pushing you harder to reach a difficult ball as if you don’t you are letting your team down. The added benefit of your team-mates encouraging you as you play also acts as a great incentive to push yourself harder. Playing volleyball in Pattaya is really easy as there are courts just about everywhere including many free facilities. If you go down to one of the many beaches in Pattaya you will see Thais playing volleyball after work and they are happy to accept new players into the game. There are also many municipal sports complexes dotted around that have floodlit courts and are happy for newcomers to either join in or book their own time to play a match. The truth is that Pattaya has the climate and facilities open 24 hours a day that leave little excuse not to exercise. Even a late long stroll along the beach in the cooler hours of the morning or evening is a fine way to start your fitness regime, it is totally free and gives plenty of opportunity to fill your lungs with fresh sea air. Keeping fit through sports in Pattaya is easy if you have the inclination. Firstly you have to accept that you really want to embrace a more healthy lifestyle then sketch out a plan to follow. Take things gradually from the start, perhaps with long walks, then bit by bit step your regime up to involve the types of activities you prefer so you will be more likely to continue in a long term healthy lifestyle.

ith eleven races under our belts so far in the 2017 F1 season, things are hotting up as to what, to date has been a highly entertaining championship and unusually as yet there have been no back to back winners. At time of going to print F1 is due to reconvene in Belgium after the summer break. So far we have Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton with four wins each, Valtteri Bottas with two and Daniel Ricciardo winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Remaining Races: Nine races are left to decide who will win this year’s coveted trophy, starting in Belgium on 25th
August and then followed by Italy 1st September, Singapore 15th September, Malaysia 29th September, Japan 6th October, U.S.A 20th October, Mexico 27th October, Brasil 10th November and finally Abu Dhabi on the 24th November.
The Story So Far: What we have learned after the first eleven races is that there is no runaway leader this time out.
Although Vettel and Hamilton are looking strong, there have been upsets from Bottas and Ricciardo. Bottas drove superbly at the Russian Grand Prix it was a beautiful drive and made many F1 fans think again about possible a new championship victor. Raikkonen has been his normal consistent self and you can always rely on the Iceman to push amongst the leaders throughout the whole season. Hot news this season was the decision of Fernando Alonso to quit F1 and drive in the Indianapolis 500.
The Problem With Overtaking:
This season’s F1 has shown little in the way of overtaking, in fact there has been a dirth. The sport has gradually been evolving over the years to comply with more stringent safety regulations and now we are told :
“You don’t need constant overtakes to make a race exciting”
Apparently now, F1 is more about endurance and a game of Cat and Mouse. Old school Grand Prix fans are not particularly enamoured as to how their favourite sport has developed, and in some respects that is fully understandable. The flip side of the coin is that now we are seeing some of the fastest ever cars on the track, the new breed of cars have powerful hybrid engines with really aggressive new aerodynamics together with fatter tyres. All of this has transformed the F1 car into an amazingly fast racing machine that is tearing down lap records on a regular basis.
Top Teams Ruling The Roost: Recently the managing director for motorsports, Ross Brawn, issued a warning that the top three teams are getting too far ahead of the pack. Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull have dominated F1 for some time now and Brawn was quoted saying “A situation where a small number of teams are a long way ahead of their rivals is unhealthy for the sport.”

He honestly believes the gap between the top three and the rest is simply too big. Perhaps the planned revamp of the engine regulations that is due in 2020 will help to address this current situation. Since the current V6 hybrid turbo regulations have been in place at the start of 2014, Mercedes have won 57 out of 70 races, with Ferrari winning seven and Red Bull six. Brawn has previously said, “F1 should be accessible to the largest number of teams possible” and that is why he has been carrying the torch for rule changes.
The Hamilton / Bottas Syndrome: Lewis Hamilton
is showing some real love and affection towards his team mate Valtteri Bottas, and being very humble about it also. Love him or hate him, you cannot knock Hamilton’s attitude both towards his colleague and his team. The popular charitable act towards Bottas in the Hungarian Grand Prix, ensured that Bottas finished on the podium for the fifth successive time and the eighth in total. That gesture actually meant that Bottas equalled Vettel’s podium appearances and went two ahead of Hamilton. After the race Hamilton said, “ Letting Bottas past was tough but I am a man of my word” he then went on to explain that it was difficult sacrificing the three points, but it was in response to an earlier gesture by his teammate after Bottas had let him in earlier in the race.
Not Sporting A Brazilian: The Hungarian Grand Prix threw up a quite remarkable F1 fact. Not since the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix had a race started without a Brazilian driver on the grid. This was due to Felipe Massa’s absence and the whole event felt sort of weird not having the samba boys there. The history of Brazilian drivers in F1 has been quite incredible, there have been over 30 drivers from the South American country that have graced F1 racing, including three world champions, Senna, Piquet and Fittipaldi. In fact Ayrton Senna was only 31 when he won his third title, which made him the youngest three-time champion ever. The purists of F1 are not too convinced if the direction their sport is going is in the right direction. But ever since the conception of motor racing, the sport has always evolved season by season. From engine changes to laws protecting safety, FI has progressively changed. In a way motor sport is quite different from any other sport in that at its core is a piece of machinery that is constantly evolving. The motor industry never stands still, and as it develops new technologies they will of course be adopted into F1 in some shape or form. Because of this F1 will remain as an ever changing sport, by its very nature it is at the forefront of car development and positively promotes improvements in the motor industry as a whole. Whether the second half of the season will prove to be as interesting as the first, it will remain to be seen. If Ross Brawn’s predictions prove to be correct then the big three will rule the roost.
If you are thinking of watching the next Grand Prix and are looking for somewhere exciting to see it, then why not head down to I-Rovers Sports Bar in LK Metro. Enjoy the FI along with a cool beer and also perhaps a great English Breakfast.

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold Todd Shows How to Get it Done
B flight runner-up was last year’s PAGS overall winner Tom Thompson (17) with 40 points, while 3rd place was a tightly contested affair with a series of countbacks required before Manny Defteros (14) got the nod with his 22 points on the back 9, after 4 players signed for 36 points. In the C flight, there was a clear win for 13 year old Marco Charvolin (31) with 40 points, 1 ahead of Bernt Boden (26), while the bronze again required countback. George Okrasa (23) just getting the better of Leif Halin after both had signed for 37 points.
Another day dawned as golfers descended en masse on the Phoenix Gold course with a field of 93 players including 7 Ladies. Everyone had an eye on the weather conditions and with good reason too, as a few storms had been experienced over the previous few days. We played the Mountain & Ocean combination, with the course being in great condition after the recent Ladies European Tour event. Greens were running smoothly, although the recent rain softened the fairways reducing much run. Organisors implemented lift, clean & place through the green to avoid the dreaded mud ball on the soft fairways. Again this month I will throw out a few honourable mentions, to Todd, Myles, Ken & Wayne Soper who actually won 4 technicals, although 2 went back in to the lucky draws. In Dave’s absence his team once again did a tip top job in the tucker department, with plenty of non golfers coming along to enjoy the social atmosphere of the evening with their golfing partners, family & friends. As always, there is only 1 person to blame if you go home hungry from Hemingway’s Jomtien after a PAGS presentation.
Contact Shane on 0863720084 or through Birdie at www.birdie.in.th to ensure your preferred tee time.
There were a couple of standout performers this month, with Todd Doss shooting 69 off his scratch handicap, to claim the Low Gross, 2nd in the A Flight & his maximum 2 technicals. Myles Knowlson (15) recorded the best stableford score of the day to convincingly lead the B Flight home with a spectacular 44 points, again along with the maximum 2 technicals. The Ladies winner was regular PAGS participant, Prasong O’Connor (18) with a solid 37 points. A flight winner was Ken Price (13) with an impressive 42 points, to go with his Long Drive on 9, ahead of the aforementioned Todd Doss, with Fynn Csizmadia (11) picking up 3rd spot on 38 points.

IS FISHING A SPORT OR NOT?
A
question that has been a bone of contention for many years. This question can raise some eyebrows and stir up a lot of debate. To give a more logical explanation, let’s examine some points that make an activity a sport. What would you call a sport? The dictionary says: a sport is something that needs physical exertion, something that requires a skill set and something that is competed by an individual or a team against another for entertainment. Now let’s look at fishing. Fishing can include several different types: leisurely fishing involves taking a rod out to the shore and casting it into the water while you spend some quality time with your best buddy or your beloved ones. You can stick a bottle of wine in the water to cool as you laze along with an obligatory 6 cans of Leo. It can also be going out on a boat and basking in the sun with a few Singha (If you can afford a boat you can afford a dearer brand of beer 55555) your line out in the water and grabbing any fish that comes along. This doesn’t need any special physical exertion or skill set unless you try to understand how fish shoal, feed, or travel particular areas. Sport fishing on the other hand, unlike leisure fishing requires physical exertion. Imagine reeling in a Marlin over 100 kg into your boat. (Been there and wore the T-Shirt in Puerto Rico Gran Canarias) and believe me I fell asleep that night at a beer table in one of the loudest night clubs on the island for 2 hours – Still pulled later that night though)! The more you fish the more you learn. It is not all about a fishing rod and some bait but I have watched many first time anglers batter my fish and weights…Many Many times, using the same bait and method. You have to know where, when and how to look for the fish. What bait and lure to use. Along with the technique to hold and pull the reel so that you do not lose the fish. It is all a skill that has to be perfected through regular training. And of course there is competition. You can compete to catch the biggest fish or the most fish…. that depends on you. You can compete with your fellow anglers or with anglers from other boats or even from other seas. The possibilities are endless. (Especially when there might be dosh in the pot.) While fishing off the coast at Groomsport, N.Ireland with the Windsor Snooker and Fishing Club Belfast, it was decided to put 2 quid in each giving a pot of £22….Simple rules were: 1pt for a mackerel, 2 for a dogfish, 3 for a skate and 6 points for sand eels (reasoning behind this was that the first 3 were always caught but nobody had ever seen a Sand Eel) I had kitted up the day before in Belfast with a simple sea rod and reel setup and asked the guy in the shop what the best 6 hook traces would be… It was something silver flashing with little green beads (Perfect for Mackerel or Herring which was the main catch where I was going) and might get lucky with anything else swimming about. Imagine to my surprise 10 minutes after lines in when I pulled up every hook filled up with Sand Eels (The bait fish for the other main catches 555555555) – After 2 hours I had amassed the simple total of 114 points and my nearest rival had 16 points…I still chuckle to this day but that’s fishing and that’s sport and that’s competition for you. This all boils down to the point that fishing is indeed a sport and not just an outdoor activity and from a health option I was totally knackered walking the rest of the team up to the Old Groomsport Hotel for beers and sandwiches… Not only did I lose weight carrying them and my gear up there but I lost an easy £22 (pounds) after I threw my winnings into the middle. The boys still tell the story to this day…. “Millarmeister struck again”

ost people today are concerned about proper respect for and care of the environment. While this often shows up in debates over climate change and the ways to combat it, everyone should be interested in taking proper care of our world. Some of us might in particular be interested in how to enjoy sailing on the open waves in ways that will not harm fragile marine ecosystems. Thankfully, there is all sorts of information online about what we might call “eco-friendly boating.” Here are eight ways to make your next boat trip both fun and environmentally conscious.
Eco Tip #1: Avoid gas and oil spills
Avoiding spillage or leakage of oil and gas is perhaps the most important way for boating to be environmentally friendly. Indeed, the National Academy of Sciences says that as much as 85% of the oil that enters North American waters is due to human negligence or activity—including the spillage and emissions from vehicles like boats. Oil spills can be extremely difficult to clean up and can be extremely dangerous for the environment and marine life. Making sure you're fuelling is safe for the environment. It can be simplified with these tips: - Always fuel your boat at the dock, never while in the water. - Do not top off your gas tank; engine heat causes the gasoline to expand and will create overflow, which will then leak into the water. - Use oil-absorbent rags, mats, or other items to safely catch any oil that may leak onto the boat’s floor. (They must be disposed of in a hazardous waste facility at the marina when they are fully saturated.) - Know how much gasoline your tank can hold to avoid overfilling it. - Watch for any cracks, fissures, or other openings that may cause leaks. Repair them before your trip. - Jerrycans (portable oil cans taken onto the boat) are permitted, but must meet certain regulations to avoid spilling. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates approximately 70,000 gallons of fuel are spilled by jerrycans accidentally each year.
Eco Tip #2: Properly dispose of sewage Nobody likes to talk about it but someone, somewhere, will need to use the restroom while on a boat. Having an onboard toilet is a great advantage but how do you use it safely? Here’s how: - There are three main ways to deal with human waste on a boat. One is to use a toilet with a marine sanitation device .The next is to use a porta-potty (which doesn’t qualify as a toilet and must not dispose of waste within a three-mile limit). Finally, some boaters find composting toilets to be a helpful alternative. Composting toilets don’t use a holding tank for the waste or have to be pumped out so they can be an attractive and easy method. - Marine Sanitation Devices (MSD) are toilets attached to a holding tank. There are three kinds. The most common, called Type III, has to be emptied at a pumpout facility. The other types are able to pump treated sewage overboard (Type I is used for offshore recreational boats, while Type II are found on large commercial vessels).
Eco Tip #3: Be proactive Much of what needs to be done to keep your boat safe for use can be done ahead of time, before you’re even on the water. A little planning ahead can be really useful: - Check for any leaks or damage to the boat. - Ensure bilges are clean and dry; address any leaks or overflow from the pump.

MOTOR & MARINE
(Windex may look blue, but it has no business being in the ocean!) Most boats can be cleaned with a stiff brush and a hose full of fresh water; if you want to be more thorough, many brands offer green, safe cleaning products for you to use. The EPA has created the Safer Choice label to identify products that have been rigorously tested by EPA scientists to ensure none of the ingredients will hurt the environment. Start there or go for products specifically designed for boat cleaning and tips on how to best use them.
Eco Tip #7: Have the right engine
- Clean and grease electrical systems and make sure they are not frayed or worn. - Make sure the propeller is working properly. A damaged propeller will require more fuel and will cost more money to operate, in addition to the effect it will have on the environment. (Check your impeller if you have a jet drive.) - Fill the gas tank before you leave. - If you have a glass-bottomed boat, give the glass a good waxing. This will prevent the build-up of debris and other detritus on the glass, which will reduce your need to use harmful chemicals when cleaning the boat afterwards. - Check for leaks in the gearcase and that the oil is not contaminated. These tips will go a long way to ensuring a healthy, safe trip for all.
Eco Tip #4: Avoid greywater
“Greywater” is different from blackwater (sewage water) in that it consist of the untreated water that comes from your onboard sinks, showers, washing machine, dishwasher, and the wastewater from clea ning the boat. This kind of used water frequently has chemicals in it that are harmful to the environment—to the point that some states have determined greywater is a pollutant and is considered sewage. To avoid its impact on the environment, try the following: - Do as much laundering, bathing, and dishwashing at onshore facilities at the marina. - Use low-flow showerheads or on-demand faucets. - Consider untreated water as waste and discharge if more than three miles from land, if you can’t retain it for a pump out facility. - Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. - Clean your boat as much as possible with freshwater.
Eco Tip #5: NEVER toss trash in the ocean
We’ve all seen the pictures of fish or other sea critters caught in sixpack holders or plastic bags. Plastic especially is a dangerous intruder to the marine world because it never completely degrades; it only breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces that then adversely affect the animals and plant life underwater.
In the years since private recreational boat use became popular, it is not surprising to learn that technology has advanced. (Shocker!). This is relevant because the engines that were popular during the personalyacht heyday, called “two-stroke” engines, have been found to be drastically unsafe for the environment. They use far more fuel, which also creates more exhaust, and they spill as much as thirty percent of unused fuel directly into the water! Buying a modern four-stroke engine will avert these negatives, in addition to being smoother and more enjoyable to use.Make sure you are using the right size engine for your boat, as well; a smaller engine in a bigger boat will use more fuel and as such be less environmentally-friendly.
Eco Tip #8: Be cautious with sunscreen Avoiding careless chemical intrusion extends even to your sunscreen. Did you know that? Making sure you don’t roast like a lobster while enjoying the water is very important, but the wrong sunscreen can adversely affect marine life, particularly if you’re the type that enjoys swimming or doing cannonballs off the side of your boat. The chemical oxybenzone is used in many bands of sunscreen and can be toxic to fish and other marine life; check the ingredients in your sunscreen and use brands that rely on zinc or titanium dioxide, like Badger or Suntegrity.
Conclusion
Modern man has created many nifty things, including the ability to easily and creatively enjoy the many aquatic locations that beautify and sustain our earth. Understanding how to do this while also respecting and protecting the fragile marine ecosystems we enter when on boats will not only make our trips more enjoyable, but will help us rest in the knowledge that we have helped, not harmed, the wonderful world that is ours to enjoy. For more information or to look at their dock boxes and dock accessories go to : https://moboxmarine.com/blog/9-eco-friendly-boating-tips/
Aluminium cans don’t fare much better, as by some estimates they can take five hundred years to degrade. The easiest way to protect the environment here is to just never, ever, EVER throw your trash overboard. Keep a big garbage bag handy that you can safely dispose of when back on land.
Eco Tip #6: Clean with eco-friendly products This is more of an issue than you might think. But scrubbing, spraying, and the other activities that go into cleaning can create runoff, chemical clouds, and other interactions with the environment that can be very harmful and destructive.

MEDICAL INSURANCE hen people come and live in Thailand one of the things that is often neglected is medical insurance. In their home country they are so used to rolling up at their doctor or hospital and not having to pay anything out of their own pocket
Thailand is different. If you do not have medical insurance you will have to pay for treatment out of your own pocket. If you have neither any treatment needed will be withheld. The situation has got so bad the several of the Embassies have issued warnings about people being underinsured or not insured. I quote from the British Embassy warning of 1st February 2016: “Based on British Embassy figures in 2015, more than 80% of British residents in Thailand over the age of 51 who received consular assistance after being hospitalised did not have medical insurance, despite the relatively common need for medical care” Layla Slater MBE, HM Consul to Thailand said: “ Thailand is one of the top tourist and retirement destinations. Medical treatment can cost thousands of pounds and returning home may not be an option for everyone.. In many cases there will be a direct financial impact on family and friends. The British Embassy endeavours to work with charitable organisations and do everything we can to help people, but we cannot pay medical bills or fly people home. That is why we encourage people to make provision for their health and medical needs when choosing to live abroad, as it is the most reliable way to ensure that costs are covered” Whatever nationality you are it is essential that you have medical insurance. Unfortunately many people think “It will never happen to me”. However it does to a surprisingly high number of people. I have known of instances where treatment has cost over $100000. It is quite common if someone has been in an accident for the total cost to exceed $50000. When you consider that Thailand has the second highest death rates on the roads in the world and there are uninsured drivers everywhere accidents are a very common occurrence. You can obtain local medical insurance that can work out relatively cost effective or you might want to choose full international cover which costs more but has more extensive cover. Whatever your needs I recommend you get in touch with us as we can offer free impartial advice as well as being able to give the very best in quotes.

BUSINESS NEWS By Magna Carta Law Office
Due Diligence on Thai Property Purchase Investing in real estate certainly involves a huge amount of money. Investors must take extra precaution before finalizing any transactions. A reasonable person takes extra precaution before entering into an agreement or a transaction with another party to prevent unnecessary harm. The need for thorough detailed Due Diligence is recommended to begin before signing a binding contract. Due Diligence is a useful tool for estimating the status of a prospective project and the developer. It is the research and analysis of a company, organization, or an individual done in preparation for a business transaction or investment. Due diligence serves to confirm all material facts and legal parameters with regards to a sale or acquisition by investigation and evaluation of a potential investment. The failure to conduct necessary precautions usually results in terrible consequences such as serious financial and legal distress on the part of the buyer. You must remember that almost always after all the transfer is completed, the seller will not hold responsibility for problems the buyer did not discover.
Important Factors to Consider In Carrying Out Due Diligence • It is necessary to find out if the Title Deed has been correctly and legally issued. Information contained in a Title Deed must match with the records in the Land Department. • It is necessary to be aware of any encumbrances and liens currently levied upon the property. • Make sure that the seller is holding the said property under

a true title of ownership that may have the full legal rights to sell the property. • Be aware of any pending or potential legal action involving the property. • You need to check if the developer has all the required permits and legal documentation for a project that is not yet built. • You or your legal consultant may have some minor concerns with the sale contract details which you can correct before signing to purchase. • You need to know the details and status of the developer. • You must have a clear understanding of the rights and obligations of each party. This includes who pays which taxes and fees, when the deposit and balances gets paid, how long the project will take to completion and what remedies there will be if the project is not completed on time. • It is advisable to have a Thai Lawyer to review the contract drafted by the seller to ensure it is prepared with proper terms and conditions. They will also help to make sure that it meets the standard terms as required by relevant laws and confirm that the contract does not contain terms of any hidden cost and drawbacks. This procedure helps to identify potential risks and liabilities. The necessary title and background investigations provide the initial basis to confirm any safe purchase and ensure that both parties deal with each other in a fairly manner.

COST OF ADVICE A
friend recently complained about the fees he had paid to his broker in the UK to manage his portfolio over the last year. He has a moderate fund of $60,000 and had paid just under $900 for the last 12 months. He was outraged that they had charged so much and that is in spite of the fact his portfolio had risen by over 11% during the same period.
performance on his portfolio was maybe not such a bad thing! This is a conversation I’ve had a lot in the last few years as more and more of us look at what we spend and the costs of almost everything that comes out of the bank account. Whether its mobile phones, air conditioning or our investment brokers we need to be aware that price isn’t everything.
My friend explained how he had logged on to his online account and when he looked at his “transaction statement” he noticed the monthly charge. When I questioned him about this statement, he explained that it recorded things like the tax reclaims the broker had processed as well as the fund manager commission rebates he received. So it seemed that maybe the charge was not “for just sitting there doing nothing”….
With “proper” investment firms there is a lot more that they have to do. They have somebody waiting to answer the phone when you call, there’s an alternative broker to speak to if your guy is off sick. They have your file in a fireproof safe and a computerised backup in a Disaster Recovery Site.
I asked how he came to invest in these particular fund managers and he outlined how the broker researched them and their funds and also how they monitored the performance of the manager, the company they worked for and “events”. He also explained that the broker was regulated in the UK and as a result of this he was protected by the UK investor compensation scheme. He also set out how the funds were held separately by the managers and their custodians who were all regulated and that actually the whole setup was very safe. In any event, he said, these guys are all insured, so at worst if anything goes wrong you can go after their insurers. And remember there’s no tax involved if you’re an expat.

Once he thought it through my friend was eventually happy to acknowledge that paying his broker such a small relative amount for safe custody, online access, manager selection and monitoring, as well as the benefit of investor protection, insurance and even good

I remember being amazed when I learned of the number of meetings the investment managers at Legal & General had each week. I worked with this firm in the UK and for years was completely oblivious to the fact that they don’t just buy shares in companies as an investment. They go through the accounts and projections with a fine tooth comb and that’s before they buy shares or lend the company money. The scrutiny continues after the investment and if anything is more intense. So when you are thinking about who’s looking after your money, by all means look at the cost in Dollars, Bhatt and Pounds. Remember however that not all brokers are the same and not all products are the same either. Think about what you get for your money – does this have real value?
