LONG LIVE THE KING - SONG PRÁ-JÁ RERN His Majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX celebrates his eighty-seventh birthday on the 5th of December 2014. It is no coincidence, that his birthday also happens to be one of the most significant days in the Thai calendar as December 5th is also the national holiday known as Wan Pôr Hàng Châart or Father’s day King Bhumibol has the rather unique distinction of being the only Thai monarch to have been born in a foreign country. As it turned out his father, His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol Adulyadej of Songkla was studying medicine at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is where the king to be was born in 1927. Following his father’s untimely death in 1929, the Princess Mother, Sri Nagarindra took the young prince abroad to Switzerland to ensure that he received a first class Western education. Whilst there, King Bhumibol earned a degree in engineering and met Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara, who would eventually become his wife and the Queen of Thailand.

Prisoners hope for pardon on 5th December The date of December 5th is also considered to be an auspicious day – a

day that prisoners incarcerated in the Kingdom’s houses of penal servitude anxiously await. The ever hopeful felons know that that date is when the King either pardons or commutes the sentences of countless inmates. For instance, on his birthday in 2006, the 60th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, King Bhumibol pardoned no less than 25,000 convicts.

First king to visit every corner of his kingdom As the world’s longest reigning monarch, Prince Bhumibol ascended to the throne in 1946, and was officially crowned King in 1950. Since his return to Thailand in 1951, His Majesty, King Bhumibol has become aptly known as both “The People’s King” and “The Father of the Land”. His Majesty is the first and only Thai King to visit every single corner of his kingdom. Throughout King Bhumibol's reign, His Majesty has worked tirelessly, especially in the nation’s most rural areas, to improve the lives of all of his subjects. Traveling via airplane, motorcade, helicopter, jeep, horse and even on foot, always with medical teams, engineers and surveyors, His Majesty has brought prosperity and plans for irrigation, roads, medical clinics, schools, and a brighter future to every province in Thailand. In addition, His Majesty has always been quick to contribute his personal funds to those in need. Most recently during the flood disaster that affected much of the Kingdom in 2010.

King Bhumibol is very talented Another apt label for His Majesty would be that of “Renaissance man”. A number of His Majesty's accomplishments, such as designing bridges and dams, being a skillful artist, an excellent jazz musician, a talented saxophone player, the composer of the Thai national anthem, the builder of his own wooden sailboat and a holder of a patent for cloud seeding, which is otherwise known as rainmaking, are all talents that are not normally associated with that of a nation’s head of state.

| EXPAT LIVING

Up Your Soi I begin this month’s review standing outside The Pig & Whistle restaurant in Soi 7. Across the street is Celtic Kings Beer Bar with pool table. I could be wrong but my records indicate this was the former site of Bacchus Bar which, back in early 1998, was the only – and thus the first - beer bar in Soi 7. As I mentioned last month, Soi 7 was little more than a goat track at that time. The second beer bar was Big Tree Bar (now Bubpha Bar) opposite Flipper House, completed in July or August of that year. Eastiny Seven Hotel with the familiar colour scheme indicating it is yet another of the ‘Eastiny’ chain of hotels which dominate Soi 8, is next followed by Happiness A Go Go and a lane leading to Pattaya Central Road. Across the lane is Dom Bar out front of Moka Loka Bar. This site was occupied for many years by After That Bar owned by an Aussie friend of mine and I’ve spent many a wonderful evening in the vicinity. The lane itself contains a few bars that are conveniently located with Tops Supermarket only a stone’s throw away. Married men can bring the little woman to the bar and explain, “You go off to Tops, tee

40 40

PATTAYA TRADER

ruk, and I’ll wait here. Here’s 2,000 baht for the grocery shopping and you can bring me back the change.” Then he can order a cold beer and wonder why every other man within earshot is laughing. Next is Pandora Bar followed by another Aussie bar, Boomerang Bar, then Tequila Reef Cantina. Back on the left of Soi 7 is three blocks containing a half dozen beer bars each. These bars are a cacophony of action and music (noise) most nights and usually filled to the rafters with punters. During the day, some offer Happy Hours from 8am to 8pm with cheap beer and Thai whisky. Be warned that no matter what time of the day, the impost for a Lady Drink can be around 120 baht which is well over the odds in my opinion. Therefore, when I sit and drink my cheap beer, the ladies go thirsty. A decade ago these bars were the battlefield in the Great Pattaya Toilet Wars which resulted in blood – or urine – in the street. Briefly, it came to pass that there was a severe shortage of toilets in the area so anyone owning a toilet jumped at the opportunity to make some serious baht. Unfortunately, there was a large disparity of prices charged by the various

by Neil Hutchison toilet mafia families in and between Sois 7 and 8. The result was imbibers in Soi 7, say, would cut through the rear of the bar they were drinking at to use facilities in Soi 8 which were cheaper. Or vice versa. This loss of revenue could not be tolerated so the solution was to build a wall at the back of the bars so nobody could cross. Think Berlin Wall but not as high. Then they built other walls between the groups of bars and the situation just got sillier and sillier. Not sure if the situation has changed but some of the walls are still there. Back to Tequila Reef restaurant which I know well and wholeheartedly recommend to all lovers of Mexican cuisine. The hard working female staff are so friendly and cute you just want to take them home (but you can’t!) and the food is so good you’ll want to eat it every day. Stumbling out of Tequila Reef with blue lips thanks to several pretty, blue, frozen cocktails, I passed Silver Star A Go Go (opened on the 8th of June 2007) and a few small indoor beer bars before reaching Lovely Corner Bar on the corner with Beach Road. My final thoughts are that Soi 7 offers good value for daylight imbibers and, in some cases, all night long. It has come a long way over the years and now, together with Soi 8, represents the nucleus of Central Pattaya’s nightlife.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden Even if you have zero interest in farming, gardening, horticulture, and all things related to botany or the science of growing greenery, you won’t be disappointed when you acquiesce to allow family members or your newly minted Thai friends to drag you kicking and screaming to Nong Nooch Tropical Garden – one of Pattaya City’s most popular attractions World renowned Nong Nooch Tropical Garden is best described as the biggest, the best and the most beautiful botanical garden in all of Southeast Asia. Residing on nearly 2.5 square kilometers, or some 600 acres of Pattayan real estate, the visitors will encounter innumerable varieties of exotic and rare plants and flowers. Whilst roaming the immaculate footpaths that meander amongst the well kept grounds, guests will pass through areas inhabited with species of flora and fauna that are specific to a single theme of growing things, like palms, orchids, Cacti and Succulents, which are sometimes known as “Fat Plants”. Other sections contain shrubbery and perennials that are unique to a single region of the world, such as Stonehenge or a French Garden to name a few. It’s also possible to get a bird’s eye view of the immense garden, as there are a number of elevated walkways which bisect the park offering one and all an amazing vista from above.

Sowing the seeds Noon Nooch came to life over half a century ago when Khun Pisit and Nongnooch Tanscacha purchased a plot of land near the sleepy fishing village of Pattaya way back in 1954. The couple did this with the notion of developing the land into a fruit plantation. Somewhere along the way their plan went astray as the duo instead started a conservation project that was dedicated to tropical plants and flowers. In 1980, their life’s work in the form of a vibrant, flourishing garden was opened to the public. Since then, an impressive array of spectacular live shows, entertaining wildlife exhibits, exciting martial arts demonstrations, and educational seminars on all thing Thai, such as its culture, its history, its religion and its cuisine have been strategically added to the lush beauty of the botanical garden. Shows and exhibits Two of the most popular attractions at Nong Nooch Garden are the live shows; one of which takes place in a large indoor auditorium, the other outdoors in a small stadium. Viewers of the Thai cultural

show are awed by the mesmerizing crash course given on just about every aspect of Thai culture and history. Performed four times every day, nothing has been omitted from the extravaganza that features hundreds of musicians, athletes and performers. During the hour and a half performance the audience gets a glimpse at a traditional Thai wedding ceremony, an earful of ethnic music and an eyeful of native dances from across the nation, a demonstration of Muay Thai kick boxing and a recreation of one of Thailand’s most historic battles. Visitors who catch one of the three daily outdoor elephant shows never fail to be amused by Thailand’s revered elephants as they portray footballers, dancers, artists, and comedians. Hotel and houses available If you wish to extend your stay at the garden, a variety of accommodations, ranging from a lakeside hotel with a swimming pool to Thai style houses are available right on the grounds of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden. When your stomach informs you that it’s time to eat, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a day tripper or in for the long haul as you can satisfy your hunger at one of the garden’s many restaurants and cafes that serve both Thai and Western specialities. When you’re not exploring the garden, you can pedal across the garden’s lake in a swan shaped boat, or experience the relaxing touch of a traditional Thai massage, after shopping for gifts and souvenirs at the park’s shopping mall.

Getting There Nong Nooch Tropical Garden is situated approximately 19 kilometers south of Pattaya City proper. It is easy to navigate to Nong Nooch Garden by heading south on Sukhumvit Road and then turning left at kilometer marker number 63. Nong Nooch is open from 8 am until 6 pm every day. The admission price includes entry to all of its shows.

F

ollowing on from last month’s trip to Chachoengsao here is the report of our return visit. Again I would stress that there is so much to see and do in this province that one day is not enough, and even two will only get you to the highlights. This trip was mainly to visit three rather spectacular temples, a silver one, a gold one and one full of giant bats, although it also took in yet another giant statue of Ganesh, the Hindu god with the elephant head, and an old fort with ancient cannon.

restaurants are on moored barges along the riverside and serve a tasty meal. One and a half kilometers from the temple is Chachoengsao Fort on the left of the road with a riverside promenade on the right. The fort dates to the reign of the third king of the present dynasty. Later it became a base for a Thai force fighting Chinese Haw bandits who caused much damage in Laos and Thailand during the reign of King Rama V. A few of the ancient cannons are still mounted on the fort’s walls.

Thai dancers performing at Wat Sothon

Giant standing bronze Ganesh statue

Before you reach the town you will see signposts for Wat Sothon which is our first stop. A right turn off the main road at traffic lights takes you parallel to the Bang Pakong River. After two kilometers Wat Sothon is between the road and the river. For GPS users its position is 13.6742°N, 101.0661°E. If you visit this temple on a weekend or a holiday expect large crowds as it is an important religious site, both locally and nationally. The main temple hall is in silver grey with highlights in gold and will delight any photographer. In the more modest shed-like building next door are important Buddha statues in the back while at the front there is stage for traditional Thai dancers who perform for those making merit. Watching the dancers can take you back to how beautiful dance must have been in those ancient Khmer and Thai royal courts, a beauty sometimes, although rarely, glimpsed in some of Pattaya’s less salubrious haunts. Behind the main temple buildings is a Chinese style temple well worth looking inside.

Ancient fort with preserved cannons

Leaving Wat Sothon continue along the road staying close to the river by taking the right at the traffic circle and then following the sharp left the road, now called Maruphong Road, takes a little further on. If you are ready to eat look out for the floating restaurant entrances on your right-hand side. These seafood

From the fort we stayed on Maruphong Road going under the main highway. Crossing the river it changes name to Suphakit Road and gets a number, route 3200. At just less than 5 kilometers from the fort take the right turn signposted to Bang Kaeo which runs alongside a canal. 8½ kilometres up this road take another right which is signposted to the palm tree and bird park. Between 3 and 4 kilometers along this road look for signs to the giant standing bronze Ganesh statue on the right. Yes it’s that elephant headed god again that Chachoengsao seems to be so fond of. This is a Hindu shrine which is still being built, but is mostly finished. For GPS users the giant Ganesh is at 13.7353°N, 101.1744°E. After visiting this shrine go back to the road and continue 4 kilometers to the east, first crossing the river. There you will find another photographers delight, a temple entirely covered in gold paint. Again for GPS users put in 13.7429°N, 101.2092°E as a way-point. This is Wat Pak Nam. Having looked at this temple inside and out you can walk down to the river and see just up the river. On a point is a stupa memorial to King Taksin. Following the road on from Wat Pak Nam will take you there for a closer viewing.

Giant bats at the temple Wat Pho Bang Khla Issue 170 | DECEMBER 2014

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

Staying with the road alongside the river, which now turns towards the south, will in a couple of kilometers bring you to the town of Bang Khla. In the centre of town on your right hand side is a very well built modern floating market with many eating places but I suspect it’s only open on weekends and holidays as it was certainly closed when we were there mid-week. Continue just under a kilometer from the town center staying with the river on your right will bring you to my favourite temple of this trip, Wat Pho Bang Khla. For GPS users this is at 13.7210°N, 101.2021°E. Now Wat Pho Bang Khla doesn’t have any silver or gold buildings. It does have a promenade where you can view the wide river back up to the town. It also has some rather splendid old trees which keep the large temple grounds and buildings in a cool shade, but what’s important to me is what is hanging in the trees. There are flying foxes, hundreds of them. Flying foxes are giant fruit eating bats with a very fox-like red face. They seem to be content to hang quietly upside down on the temple trees but noticeably don’t hang around on trees outside of the holy site. I suspect there are a few orchard owners that may not be that fond of them, and they look big enough to make chicken sized dinner. So that brings our second trip to Chachoengsao to an end. From Wat Pho Bang Khla you can either go back the way you came or head south along the east bank of the Bang Pakong River.

Getting THERE Chachoengsao will be the first province you enter after leaving Chonburi when driving from Pattaya to Bangkok. You will probably notice crossing the Bang Pakong River whether on the motorway or the Bangna-Trat Road. From the intersection of the motorway, Route 7, and highway 314 the town of Chachoengsao is just over 17 kilometers to the north.

The verb ‘it’ and other disasters Being native English is not always the same as being able to do the grammar correctly. In his teaching career, Mark Beales has come by quite a few funny situations with English teachers who don't have a clue of what they are doing

Ask any English student what they want to learn about English, and most will say ‘I want to improve my grammar’. There is a fixation with many students, and some teachers, that perfect grammar is essential in order to communicate in English. And it so isn’t. If you ask me ‘the bank where?’ I’ll have a good idea of what you mean. The grammar is horrible but you have communicated something to me. And communication is the name of the game. Grammar is the cement that holds language together. Without it you can still build a brick wall that will generally do its job; it just won’t be a very strong one. Before my first Business English courses began, we had to interview the students to assess their levels. One woman with short, swept-back, hair and glasses was going to be taking my course seriously. ‘So what would you like to learn during the course?’ I asked. ‘I want to learn about the 12 tenses.’ ‘Wow’ I thought, ‘there are 12?’ There are indeed a dozen, although when teaching you’ll do well to touch on more than half of them. When teaching it is imperative that you know what you are talking about back to front, right to left, bottom to top. If you aren’t completely sure of something, you will have a hard time explaining it clearly to someone. So take time to fully understand what may seem obvious until it truly becomes obvious. You’d be amazed how some teachers bluff their way through the day with zero understanding of what they’re talking about. During an observation class, I once saw a teacher demonstrate how his understanding of grammar was about as effective as an elephant with chopsticks. ‘OK class, settle down’ he began “today we are going to study the verb ‘it’.” I looked up from my notebook and assumed I had misheard. But he continued: ‘The verb “it” can be used in many ways. “It is

48

PATTAYA TRADER

hot, it is dangerous, it is 8 o’clock”. Now, copy these.’ Most of the class was unaware of the grammatical homicide being committed before their eyes, but a few smart students were soon displaying furrowed brows as they tried to understand. Just to clarify, ‘it’ is a pronoun. It always has been and always will be. The moral here is clear: know your grammar and your terms. Another teacher, who lasted barely more than a month, knew what a certain verb was; he just didn’t have a clue what to do with it. He approached me one day and, with complete honesty, confessed: ‘so what’s the verb “be” all about then?’ ‘Well, it’s an auxiliary verb, you know, the “is/am/are” stuff.’ ‘Mmm, yeah I see. So why do they call it “be” if it’s “is/am/are”?’ ‘That’s the base form.’ ‘Ahh’, it seemed as though the penny had dropped. But it hadn’t dropped entirely; it was hovering on a precipice. ‘So why do they say “to be”, what’s wrong with the “verb be”?’ he continued. The penny never quite made it over the edge, and the teacher was on his way before long. Accordingly, being a native speaker doesn’t mean you know how English works, it means you know what sounds right and what sounds wrong. Being able to explain why something is right or wrong is the trick.

International School children cleaning Cosy Beach

The organization Green Pattaya is working hard on cleaning the beaches around our city. It is hot work in the sun and the garbage piles seem to be washing up in an endless, constant stream. On a day in November 25 school children and members of Rotary collected 25 bags of rubbish in only four hours In November 25 students from the International School of the Eastern Seaboard Thailand met up with the Green Pattaya volunteers and Rotary members to once again clean the cosy beach area. The plan was to get only small things but sadly the state of the beach and the sea was really bad and required everybody to do their very best for four hours. The sea was full of black residue maybe from the Loy Kratongs the day before but also plastic and other trash. The three boats have been reduced to two boats due to the owner put one on fire after City Hall officials warned her about the boats. The people around cosy beach have stopped using the area as a garbage dump but there

50 50

was still plastic buried in the mud from the grey waterfall. For the first time ever we saw a family using the area for sunbathing so we are working in the right direction. When the rain stops Green Pattaya will schedule another cleaning and clean the area up and hopefully the boats will be gone at that time. The students were very active removing large chunks of burnt boat parts and they also collected 25 bags of rubbish. Due to other engagements City Hall could not come but they came after to pick up all the garbage bags. The International School of the Eastern Seaboard Thailand enjoyed the day out and a new cleaning is planned for January 2015.

Pattaya's shopping malls My favourite of the 2nd road Malls is Central Festival. If you have time and enjoy the breadth of choice and well thought out comfortable environment this is the place. However Royal Garden Plaza can be useful if you need to quickly buy something and can’t cope with the noise and crowds of Central – say on a busy Saturday. Finally don’t discount Mike’s Shopping Mall. It has some work to do but improvements are on-going and you could just pick up a few bargains Banks and bras When friends and relatives come to visit I love to see how surprised they are at the quality of shopping malls we have here in Pattaya. Certainly the introduction just a couple of years ago of Central Festival (in itself a Bangkok quality shopping mall) has made the other two malls along 2nd road get their act together and “raise their game”.

Six floors in Central Festival The shopping mall Central Festival comprises a department store along with five floors of well planned, well thought out shopping mall. From the moment you arrive it is clear that this is a centre where each floor has been themed and sectioned by type of outlet with the shopper in mind. The car park can be accessed via either beach or 2nd road. There is enough space to quickly turn your vehicle up as many floors as it takes to get parked and there even is a ladies parking floor, colour coded, of course, in pink. One slightly confusing point of difference is what is considered the Ground floor. Some of us are used to the term “Basement or Lower Ground” being used when a shopping floor is below street level and this being named as Ground Floor in Central Festival can lead to problems when arranging to meet up with friends. The escalators at both ends of Central Festival together with lifts at the side of the building make navigating through the various floors really no problem at all. In fact as you come out of the car park into the lift lobby you will find some really quite useful little stalls such as shoe repairers and watch strap and battery replacers.

I will not list all the shops available at this mall. You will enjoy the experience of wandering around (if it is your first time) and finding just how many of the brand names you notice. However, the newly opened Marks and Spencer on the ground floor is worth a mention as there was quite a pre opening buzz about it with many British expats getting excited about the nostalgia of finding their favourite sweets such as “Percy Pigs” and “Chocolate Covered Raisins” in the little food section there. If you are looking for a full on M&S Store you will be disappointed. What we have here is a tentative first step into the Pattaya market to see how the inflated (compared to England) prices work and which sections of Mark’s merchandise we feel worth paying the extra for. My personal view here is that the underwear – especially bra section will do well. Its hard to find good stationery and greetings cards in Pattaya so B2S being in Central Festival is a particularly useful feature. Make sure, however that you don’t rush to buy your magazines from the display at the front. The headings on the magazine covers may be in English but the text inside is Thai. Be sure to check – we’ve all had that experience the first time at a hairdresser’s in Thailand. Instead, go farther into the store, past the book's section and you will find a stand marked “Foreign Magazines”. For those of you who are “Crafty” there are also sewing, knitting and embroidery sets and everything from sewing machines to thread, wool and knitting needles in B2S. Its also a good idea to open a bank account in Central Festival if you need to make transactions from the branch rather than use internet banking or ATMs. These banks have the longest opening hours of any in Pattaya.

Flat screens and flowers If like me, you sometimes just can’t handle Tut Com and want to feel confident in your purchase – say if it is a present that you need a warranty for, you can find a great Power Buy, Canon and Apple Store here and men who don’t usually enjoy the shopping experience can spend ages in front of the newest TV models. Also the fifth floor Department store electrical goods is well worth going the extra level for. It stocks items that aren’t always easy to find such as coffee bean grinders and coffee machines. Also although I usually prefer real to artificial flowers, its not always easy to find them in Pattaya and real blooms can die rather quickly here in the heat, so the wonderful array of really beautiful artificial flowers on offer are really well worth considering.

Food and pleasure If you want to eat upstairs rather than go downstairs where there is a very large selection of basement dining often crowded and noisy – opt for one of the eateries at the beach road end where

54

SHOPPING

you have the most fantastic sea view. The best way to see these is by using the glass lift – a great way to see the surrounding palm trees and beach front. Or if you just want tea and cake, Secret Recipe with a really extensive selection of cheesecakes and brownies including the outrageous White Chocolate Cheesecake could be just the place for you. Then if the kids want a go on to the Interactive video games there’s plenty to choose from and even as SFX Cinema and SF Strike Bowl which means that you really could spend the entire day in Central Festival.

Royal Garden Plaza for shoes Royal Garden Plaza doesn’t have the same availability of parking as Central and also the parking has to be accessed by the underground entrance to the front on 2nd road – not great during the rainy season. However you also have the option of exiting on 2nd road or Beach road here and that is very useful with the one way system. My tip for parking at Royal Garden is that when you leave the car park to enter the mall make sure and take note of the shop you exited by for ease of remembering the way back into the garage. A real effort has been made over the last two years or so with the introduction of high brand outlets like: GAP, I Studio – Apple outlet, Guess and Pandora. Also the Coffee Club in Royal Garden Plaza is a popular meeting place at any time of the day. The layout is not quite as well thought out as Central; throughout the mall there is a mix of different shop types but I do actually enjoy shoe shopping here as there are a few good stores such as Charles and Keith, Aldo Lyn, VNC and Hush Puppies all within easy reach of each other on the ground floor, and like in Central Festival it has an area (where the fountains are) to watch the occasional Thai interest events such as a fashion show or talent competition.

Pay electric bill on 1st floor The franchise store, Pena House, on the ground floor deserves a mention. I have been to other branches of Pena and found them to be a complete jumble sale where it is almost impossible to find anything worth buying. At this branch, however, the merchandise is clearly laid out to show new stock, garments by type and discounted rails. Also because they operate a system of continuous markdown there is always a selection with 50-70% markdown so this could be your New Year’s Eve party outfit.

On the 1st floor – if you’ve not paid your electricity bill within the required 7 days at 7/11, there is an office where you can do so and this is a far better option than the previous method of travelling to the office in Naklua. You can also find a Jim Thompson shop here with some lovely gifts such as make-up and toiletry bags, silk boxer shorts and a selection of different size bags in the distinctive Thompson prints. The girls here are very helpful and will gift box and bag your purchase. Of course Royal Garden Plaza has a whole heap of entertainment to choose from. On its 2nd floor is Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Louis Tussauds’s Wasworks (Madame’s less talented nephew!) and the new attraction Sky Rider that offers a 360 degree panoramic view of Pattaya. Talking about great views the Starbucks here must surely have one of the best views of any Starbucks anywhere.

Mike's Shopping Mall Towards the Walking Street-end of second road we have Mike's Shopping Mall. There used to be plenty of parking just outside but now because of the amount of spaces taken up by clothing stalls you will be hard pressed to find a space and have to go down to the rather cramped and dark basement car park. Inside, due to some ongoing refurbishment, it is brighter and lighter but far too full of merchandise. There is so much stock crammed on the shelves that it cheapens even the better quality items and as you walk further along towards the beach road entrance you will find that the market bazaar and questionable brand items take over. Beware too if you’re uncomfortable with sales assistants calling out to you – there is plenty of “Hard Sell” here.

Best merchandise is on top floors The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf comes as a welcome oasis of calm before you hit the beach road exit which has been significantly improved. If you take the trouble to venture further up in the store to the higher floors you will see renovations are still ongoing. Watch your footing on some areas of uneven flooring and yet to be finished lighting. However, here there are better merchandised areas such as the menswear, childrens wear and particularly cute baby wear departments. Right up to the 5th floor there is a promise of “coming soon extra eateries”. However the best and little known fact about Mike’s Mall is that if you step out onto the 10th floor there is actually a rather lovely rooftop pool open from 11am until 8pm.

Pattaya

Floating Market Thailand is known for it's floating markets and of course Pattaya also has one. It is a hot, sunny affair, but it will be worth your visit as you can find interesting local specialities like fried crocodile meat and handmade soaps and silk slippers. It's easy to walk the bridges and get around by foot, but if you want to make a day of it and do the tourist thing you can hire a boat and approach the market from the waters

A

s you come out of Pattaya and on to the Sukhumvit road in the direction of Sattahip, Rayong, you will pass Tesco Lotus, Macro and Underwater World on your right. Then “The Village” where there is a junction with Soi Chaiyapruek, Jomtien. Carry straight across these traffic lights a little further along the Sukhumvit, and you will shortly come to the Floating Market on your left. It can be spotted by the number of coaches parked at the front, as this is a popular scheduled tourist destination and there are often hoards of organised visitors here. In fact if possible I would recommend that you plan your visit mid-week rather than at the weekend as many different nationalities visit this attraction: Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian to name a few. They are keen to get a flavour of Thailand, especially if only here for a short while as this purpose built floating market presents cultures and traditions from four main regions of Thailand - Northern, Southern, Central, and North Eastern. It gives a glimpse of how the people from these areas live, with local handicrafts and foods available to buy and try.

Take a boat along the canals If you have a Thai Driving License or a Work permit – bring it with you and you will be allowed free entry, otherwise the cost is 200 baht per person, although parking is free. You may also wish to bring a hat as you will be outside all day without the usual air conditioned places to escape. Although there are Thai style teak wood buildings to take shelter from, the sun really beats down on you as you cross over the bridges and walkways that link the network of small islands - even more so if you decide to take a boat along the canals and view the market from the waterways. However, a word of warning, if you do opt for a boat ride make sure that your children do not dip their hands into the filthy water as this is what really lets this attraction down. The pretty blue water illustrated in the sign outside will not be the water you see once you walk inside. A real shame as the buildings and vendors are charming enough, the prices really not unreasonable and it is certainly a fun place to wander around for a few hours perhaps catching one of the Thai dance or Martial arts demonstrations.

SCHOOL AND EDUCATION SPECIAL

Crocodile meat and scented candles There are also some good food outlets and small long boats offering specialities you may not have tried yet like Mango Sticky Rice or Crocodile meat. I tried a skewer of barbecued crocodile for just 30 baht and found it to taste like a rather chewy, slightly fattier chicken. Also on hand are many places to enjoy a smoothie or ice-cream – even, and rather surprisingly, Turkish ice-cream. As you would expect there’s a wide choice of souvenirs from wooden carved figurines or elephant's heads, and beautiful silk slippers. There are colourful stalls with hand-made soaps in interesting fragrances such as Lemon grass 3 for 200 baht. Also, scented candles or incense sticks in pretty little boxes. I especially like the mini incense sticks that come with leaf shaped ceramic holder – just long enough to catch the fallen ash when the stick has burned down. If you don’t wish to drive or travel by taxi, there are buses available for visitors to go to the Pattaya Floating Market at a cost of around 20 baht (depending on your stop). However, they only run five times a day (every 2 hours) so if you’re planning to travel this way you should check the time table of the beach bus services and see where your closest bus stop is. When you leave the market do take the chance to feed the lovely little 4 year old elephant at the exit.

Christmas

shopping made easy Don’t get stressed, Christmas shopping is supposed to be fun! Prepare for the onslaught by first allowing yourself plenty of time. Racing around on Christmas Eve will mean that you end up spending more and choosing less wisely, than if you had just taken a bit more time and care with your preparations. Make a list of who you have to buy for and possible ideas based on their likes, needs, habits and hobbies. This will cut down on the “headless chicken” routine.

Free gift wrapping service Wear comfortable shoes, take a large shopper bag and also a notebook so you can jot down anything that you are undecided about and come back for it later. If you’re not great at present wrapping then look at some ways to cheat. Marks and Spencers (basement of Central Festival) has some very pretty toiletries already cellophane wrapped and beautifully presented in baskets. Also their famous hampers are now available from this new Pattaya branch. Or go up a couple of floors to the stationery store B2S where there is a free gift wrapping service situated right by their rather good gift card section. How it works is that you purchase your wrap, bow, and box – whatever you require, and the charming assistant will gift wrap your item for free. An excellent idea for anyone who is all fingers and thumbs at this.

Photo in key ring for the grandparents If you have to think, not only of your own Christmas gift purchases but also for something for the kids to give, why not get some of your favourite photos and put them in frames. Choose from either silver plated or traditional wooden, silk varieties that

www.pattayatrader.com

you can find at many markets such as the Pattaya Night Time Market on 2nd Road. Or upload a selection on a digital photo frame such as the ones on offer at Tukcom. This is always a popular present for Grandparents. Or you can go along to the “etching” stall in Central Festival (2nd floor corridor) and hand your favourite photo over to the assistant to have it realised as a key ring or paperweight.

Christmas for kids and a latte For the kids themselves Toys R Us is a godsend with many much loved brands such as Lego and Sylvanian Families. Take inspiration from a film that your children have enjoyed earlier in the year, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle masks or Disney’s box set of Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent dolls. As Christmas in Thailand may well be spent by the beach or pool you can get lovely variations on the “bucket and spade idea” such as these lovely sand digging sets. Or buy a Water Noodle to teach your child to swim during the school holidays. Of course, as a reward for all this unselfish present giving, you may want to reward yourself with a treat from Starbucks. Their festive lattes can be enjoyed in three different flavours and a variety of sizes. Choose from Peppermint Mocha, Xmas Cookie or Toffee Nut Lattes. It doesn’t hurt to stop for a coffee and reward yourself for a job well done!

Tequila Reef Restaurant If you enjoy more than ample portions of diverse and hearty fare, combined with exotic tropical drinks that are served in a convivial atmosphere at a price that won’t embarrass your budget then stop making excuses and drop by Tequila Reef for some truly fabulous food and dazzling drinks When it comes to edible matter, just like drinking dens, Pattaya City is definitely not bereft of eating establishments. What this means to the average resident, reveler and rubbernecker come meal time, is that they must choose from cuisines of every stripe and persuasion that are hawked by eateries whose caliber range from greasy grub to divine dining. If you or your party happens to agree to disagree on what flavour of food is best to masticate, there is but one restaurant in Pattaya that is sure to please all pallets. I’m speaking specifically about Tequila Reef Restaurant situated some sixty meters from the beach, off Pattaya Beach Road on Soi 7 in central Pattaya.

Mexican and so much more Trading since 2001, Tequila Reef has earned a well deserved reputation as the place to go in Pattaya for great Mexican food. However, Tequila Reef is not just a Mexican restaurant as the diversity of its menu includes such things as bacon and cheese potato skins, cream of mushroom soup, chicken Caesar salad, a mixed grill of barbequed steak, chicken and pork ribs, Cajun style blackened duck breast, fish and chips, salmon fillet with butter and lemon, chicken or pork schnitzel, sizzling fajitas, filet mignon topped with bacon, a Philly cheese steak hoagie, and a full range of Thai dishes. Add to that a host of desserts, side dishes, extras and a bevy of beverages, Tequila Reef definitely has something for everyone. Tequila Reef offers a wide range of Mexican fare comprised of “build your own” combination plates where diners choose from a selection of beef, pork or chicken tacos, burritos and enchiladas, which are served with a side of Mexican rice and beans, and the option of flour or corn tortillas.

21 different appetizers Maybe you don’t fancy eating utensils and are in the mood for

something that’s finger licking good. If so, Tequila Reef is more than capable of supplying its patrons with a vast array of finger foods in the form of no less than 21 different appetizers. Choose from the likes of taquitos, which is a rolled and deep-fried taco filled with spicy pork or chicken that is topped with fresh salsa and sour cream or Nachos grande – a virtual mountain of tortilla chips topped with Mexican beans, your choice of steak, chicken or pork, melted cheddar cheese, salsa and sour cream, or battered and deep-fried mushrooms and Cajun style popcorn shrimp, both of which are served with spicy 1000 island and shrimp cocktail dipping sauces. If you happen to be a two fisted eater, you’ll be more than pleased with Tequila Reef’s line-up of juicy hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chili burgers and hot dogs or its unique “sloppy Joe” taco burger. Then there’s a whole host of “hoagies” of heroic proportions, some of which feature hot pastrami, savory roast beef with sautéed onions and au jus, barbecued beef, chicken or pork, Italian meatballs or deli style cold cuts and plain old tuna salad.

Hand shaken margaritas If you subscribe to the theory that no meal is complete without an aperitif, cocktail or after dinner drink, Tequila Reef’s extensive adult beverage menu and full bar won’t disappoint. Whether its fine wine, ice cold beer or top shelf spirits, you’ll be able to imbibe the alcoholic beverage of your choice. As the name suggests, tequila, a spirit distilled from the blue aguave plant is featured prominently. In fact, Tequila Reef is famous for its frozen, fresh fruit, and hand shaken margaritas and daiquiris. If you’ve never enjoyed a margarita, don’t miss the opportunity to sample one of this establishment's world class margarita flavours which include the “Blue Lagoon”, “Gold Rush”, and “Cadillac” or fresh blended mango, pineapple and banana margaritas. Tequila Reef holds a number of very affordable all you can eat buffets throughout the year, each of which usually coincides with a major holiday or sporting event. In addition they have discounted daily specials comprised of Mexican Monday, Taco Tuesday, Rib's Wednesday, Burrito Thursday, Fajitas Friday, Salmon Saturday and Steak Sunday.

Thai dance The golden dresses sparkle in the dark night as the six Thai dancers do their performance at the Ruen Thai Restaurant. Every evening the dancers quietly accompany the dinner guests, turning dinner into one of the most authentic Thai experiences you can have in Pattaya. The dancers are professional, highly estimated dancers. In daytime they teach classical Thai dance and at nights they perform these dances from ancient times at Ruen Thai Restaurant. The dances origins from four Thai regions; the North, North East, Centre and South of Thailand and the mix is making the guest's experience something very unique and sought after in terms of getting to know Thai culture at it's inner core.

For every performing with the region's particular dance the dancers go and change their robe to match the same local clothing as the dance they show. In between the dance shows the dining gets accompanied with other variated shows – for example Thai musicians on xylophones and for Christmas and New years eve celebrations there will be special fire and fighting shows on Tuesdays and Thursdays all throughout December. All together with the restaurant's authentic dÊcor and cuisine, food shows and cocktail shows, the dancers really make this restaurant a must visit-place when you come from abroad.

The Free

Thai Movement during WWII World War II in the Pacific opened with a number of sudden and wide-spread attacks by Japanese Imperial military forces against several countries. Although these dramatic attacks were not unanticipated, they caught everyone off-guard with their boldness. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese almost destroyed the entire U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by two air raids. Almost at the exact same time, on December 8, 1941, the Japanese invaded southern Thailand. They came with the excuse that they needed to cross over into British-held Malaysia to attack the British forces there. Although the Thais initially put up a fierce resistance to the invaders in order for the country to “save face,” it was quickly determined by the Phibunsongkhram (or Phibun) government that the Thai military could never hope to prevail in the one-sided outcome. The Japanese military troops were then “allowed” to march through Thai territory. Phibun then decided to ally Thailand to the Japanese in avoiding the ravages of an occupation. In trying to salvage the country’s sovereignty he also wanted to regain national control of a shaky political situation. Although the majority of Thai people appeared to be generally indifferent to the Japanese invaders, very soon a small core of upper-class or elite Thais emerged and decided to fight against the occupation. This was named “Sere Thai,” or as it was better

known in the West, “The Free Thai Movement” (FTM). The FTM had two fractions, one based outside of Thailand. The eventual leader of this new resistance movement was an equal to, and political rival of, Phibun. He was Pridi Phanomyong (or Pridi), one of Thailand’s most prominent political elites. From their days together as members of the group that led the 1932 revolution that saw the end of Thailand’s absolute monarchy they eventually became political adversaries.

After 1943 some twenty-four training camps were set up mainly in Northern Thailand for FTM guerrillas. It was estimated that there were 10,000 guerrillas divided into groups of 500 at each camp. Eleven camps were run by the British and thirteen were run by the American Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.). The FTM operated under three principles: First was to collectively fight the Japanese occupation, second was restore Thailand’s independence and third was to install a democratic political system to the country. In reality, the PTM never became a major fighting force. Since the Japanese treated Thailand more like an ally than an occupied

www.pattayatrader.com

country, their rule was general considered to be benign. So Thailand avoided the heavy reprisals and brutalized treatment of the native populations as seen in Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Burma and Malaysia. Since the Japanese ruled lightly, Pridi was unable to enlist the support of the general population into anti-Japanese activities which would have brought a hard crack-down and have been counter-productive. Mainly the PTM spent their time in military reconnaissance, helping downed Allied fliers escape capture and information gathering for the long-expected, eventual Allied invasion to free Thailand from occupation.

Thailand’s declaration of war against the U.S. was locked by M.R. Seni Pramoj, then Thailand’s minister to the U.S., into desk drawer in December 1941. Plus Seni publically repudiated any support for the Japanese. Also important to the U.S. was the FTM’s activities in Thailand. Although most of these actions occurred very late in the war and were seen by some as not of major importance, the U.S. believed Thailand was innocent of being tagged a collaborator with the Japanese. Their views eventually prevailed over the British and Thailand escaped the heavy reparations the British wished to extract as punishment.

With the sudden end of WWII on August 14, 1945, Thailand was sitting at a precarious international crossroads. The British were still smarting from Thailand’s decision to allow Japanese troops to cross the country to invade British-held Burma and Malaysia back in 1941. They pointed to the fact that the Thais willingly became an ally of the Japanese and demanded heavy reparations for their support of Japan during the war. However the U.S. took the opposing view. They pointed out Thailand was unwillingly coerced into being a reluctant ally of the Japanese. This was proven by the fact when

With the war finally over Thailand went back to business as usual.

EXPAT LIVING

Actually the FTM became the political rallying point for all manner of diverse opposition groups who joined together to fight against both the Japanese invaders and the military dictatorship of Phibun. At first the PTM was an organization in name only. The British were reluctant throughout the whole war to support the PTM in any major way. Eventually a British military commando group called Force 136 was formed and did some minor guerrilla operations in Thailand. However, the Americans were much more enthusiastic in supporting the PTM.

Getting fit with

enjoyment What good is an exercise program if you won't stick with it? Some people will tell you the key to completing something is simple discipline but how much discipline is required to finish an ice cream sundae? Here are some exercises that may not be as easy to complete as an ice cream sundae but won't require a drill sergeant to get you motivated. When thinking of retiring to Thailand most expats picture themselves relaxing. Whether on a boat, a golf course, a sidewalk cafe table, bellying up to the bar or stretching out on the beach with a copy of Pattaya Trader, the expat ideal is one of idle luxury. But such sloth can cut your retirement short, and who wants an early end to the vacation they spent their lives working toward? Better physical fitness is the key to greater satisfaction, happiness, mental acuity and longevity. And the key to better fitness? Physical activity. And, no, lifting a beer bottle to your lips does not count as working your arms.

Impress your amour carrying the groceries Of course, just as everyone would like to be a tad fitter, no one retires to Thailand to work themselves to the bone. So how to achieve that blissful balance of health and relaxation? By setting realistic fitness goals and meeting them in an enjoyable manner. No matter your age or fitness level one excellent and achievable goal is to moderately increase your activity level. So, while you may not have the goal of climbing the mountains of Chiang Mai you might like to be able to take the stairs to your penthouse if the elevator should break down, or maybe just impress your paramour with how many bags of groceries you can carry at once.

How fit are you? Ask yourself, when was the last time I moved for the sake of moving? What was the last time you intentionally exercised? For many of my readers the answer will be a dauntingly long time ago. That may be bad news for the years between then and now but the good news is that any amount of exercise will be an improvement and you'll see and feel the results very quickly. The glowing feeling you can get from something as simple as a vigorous walk is truly wonderful. And that is better news than you think because as you get older an active lifestyle becomes more and more important to your physical well being. Do not make the mistake of believing that exercise is dangerous or detrimental in reality, it's essential to slowing your ageing and preventing physical and mental deterioration.

Exercise also improves your mood Regular exercise lowers your risk for all kinds of maladies from Alzheimer's to colon cancer and everything in between. Not only that but it improves your mood, makes you feel younger and helps you maintain an active lifestyle for much longer. Simply put, if you want to be able to keep moving for years to come, start moving more now. Afraid you're too out of shape or practice to get started? Trader brings you some exercises you can do that are not only good for you but will recharge your joie de vivre batteries.

6 tips to easy exercise 1. Always consult a medical professional before starting any exercise regimen. When it comes to your body you don't know what you don't know. 2. Drink lots of water. You can be chronically dehydrated and not realize it. As people age their thirst awareness declines drink more water than you think you need. Sweat is your friend. 3. Start slow. You may think you're fit. You may think the workout you're getting isn't much. But you know you don't want to wake up too sore to continue on the third day of your new program. Any increase in activity is good, there's no need to punish yourself. Don't jump right back into lifting the same weights you put down when you were twenty. 4. Listen to your body. The young bucks at the gym trying to pack on ten kilos of muscle might want to work through the pain - let them. If you feel pain stop. 5. Rest. Finally some advice you can really thank science for! Rest is as important to your exercise program as activity is. Getting the proper amount of rest after exercising is essential for your muscles to recover and grow. 6. Consider getting a personal trainer. The benefits of expert fitness advice are obvious if you have the means, a personal trainer can really boost your workout's return on investment, as well as helping you avoid injury. And that's not considering the extra motivation a good trainer brings to the table.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Everyday exercises you can love Utkatasana This simple yoga pose is deceptively strenuous. It will warm your whole body, strengthen your legs and shoulders and requires very little movement. Start by standing with your legs shoulder width apart. Raise your hands above your head at a forty five degree angle and lower your body by bending at the knees. Keep your torso vertical and breathe slowly. If you do this right you'll feel it in your thighs, lower back and chest. The lower your butt, the better the burn. Hold the pose until it is hard to do so and repeat four to five times. Easy!

Beach Power Walking Walking is a full body, cardiovascular workout. Power walking is simple walking with a little bit of oomph. Power walking on the beach adds the extra stressor of digging into the sand with the beautiful Pattayan coastal backdrop you came here to enjoy. Start power walking by strolling at your normal pace, and then simply increase your speed. Elongate your stride and swing your arms longer than normal and keep up the pace until it is stressful then continue. The goal is to get your heart pumping. You don't need to work hard enough to get yourself panting, just hard enough to know you're working. Want to work your arms at the same time? Add some light weights to your routine and keep your elbows bent. Your biceps will thank you.

Swimming You already know that swimming is a great workout, but you may not know that you don't have to swim laps like an Olympian to get the benefits of a dip in the pool. Try treading water just enough to remain stationary in the water, alternating with lifting yourself as high in the water as you can for thirty seconds at a time. The effort of treading water will keep you from relaxing too much between intervals of extra lift. Properly treading water is achieved by scissoring your legs while moving your arms in figure eights to generate lift.

www.pattayatrader.com

Plank Pose Another yoga pose that has great strength building benefits is plank pose. There are many variations of plank pose, but the one we'll be focusing on is much harder than it looks. The good news is that it takes only a few seconds of this asana to tighten up your tummy, and you'll definitely feel it right away. Lay on your stomach and bring your elbows even with your chest so your hands are on either side of your head. Put your toes on the floor and flex your stomach muscles just enough to lift your belly off the ground but not enough to engage your lower back and hip muscles. Hold the pose as long as you can, then relax and let your stomach back to the ground. Repeat as many times as you want. You will feel it and your core will thank you.

Dance Lessons Power walking on the beach is great for the morning and early evening hours when there is plenty of light and not too much heat, but what to do on a rainy day or after the sun has fallen? How about spending the night working up a sweat in the arms of your beloved, or at least your be-liked? Dancing is a great cardiovascular routine that will also build your coordination and concentration. You may be past the age when you're working out in order to look good but, let's face it, it still feels good to be desired and few things achieve that goal like dancing well. Truly, dancing is a gentle workout you won't realize is actually exercise. Dance enough to feel it.

Tai Chi You might not be able to tell by watching it but Tai Chi, when practiced properly, is a serious strength and flexibility enhancing workout routine. This ancient discipline revolves around moving as slowly as possible through a series of poses without stopping. While not as hard as lifting weights Tai Chi is quite difficult to do perfectly and allows the practitioner to advance at their own rate, challenging themselves as they achieve greater levels of mastery. Reciting an entire Tai Chi form is incredibly rewarding and a fantastic way to greet any day. Remember, your goal should be to become just a little more active every day than the day before

Lonely in

Pattaya? There’s little excuse for anyone to be lonely in Pattaya, assuming you have a few baht in your pocket. After all, there are thousands of lovely ladies who are eager to meet foreign men (and often women, too), hundreds of pubs and beer bars teeming with camaraderie, and a variety of friendly groups (golfing, quiz, charity, expats, etc.) welcoming one and all. But if you are friendless in Pattaya or for some reason you feel lonely in a crowd, be aware that loneliness can lead to an early death. In research a University of Chicago-study found that feeling lonely and isolated from others can lead to: * less restful, restorative sleep, * raise blood pressure, * cause morning increases in the stress hormone cortisol, * increase depression, and * lead to the overall feeling that you are living a meaningless life. On a long-term basis, feelings be worse than obesity in terms potentially lethal health risks that death, the study by the Center Social Neuroscience found.

Yes, some people are happy to be alone, acknowledges psychologist John Cacioppo, director of the Center. But, he adds, most humans thrive in social situations where they enjoy support and rapport with others. "What's really important,” he stressed, “is companionship and mutual assistance and protection. Having high-quality relationships with a few people is one of the keys to happiness and longevity. The stresses and challenges of life are more easily endured if we can share them with someone in whom we can confide and trust." Short of dying an early death, researchers contend that the unhealthy consequences of loneliness-lack of sleep and heightened stress-may hasten the aging process and raise the risk of health problems. The University study was conducted among men and women 55 and older.

Going Fishing with Roger

H

i Folks, I have been going out to Koh Man Wichai some 5 miles west of Koh Larn. It is about 90 minutes from Naban so I have to be careful about the weather. Another problem is the shipping lanes, those big cargo ships might not see or pick up on their radar a small boat and even if they did there is not a lot they could do about it. However the fishing can be good, with the chance of queen fish and Spanish mackerel up for grabs.

Big queen fish jumped out the water

I anchored up on a dropping tide in 90 feet of water, put out 3 ugly sticks 6-15 lb, 2 with a float, depth set at 60 feet and one bottom rig. I used small live silver fish and red sand fish (bpla si deang) using two hooks on a short length of non nylon coated 20 lb wire. Whilst I waited for the action to start I used my light ugly stick 2-6 lb with a metal pirk. All of a sudden one of the float rods bent over double, line started to strip off the reel and at the same time I saw a big queen fish jump clean out the water. I let the fish take line and the fish jumped another four times in the next five minutes. Then the fish started to dive down, and when he slowed down to a stop I could slowly put line back onto the reel and then he would dive again. This went on for more than ten minutes, and the last stage of the fight I brought the fish close up to the boat but he was not finished as he circled around one side of the boat. Each time he got too close he would dive straight down, but every time a little less. This went on for five minutes, until finally with my arms shaking with the twenty five minute fight, I lead the fish into the big landing net, a 5 kg queen fish, I had hooked him just outside of his mouth!

I made a loop on the anchor line When I take my fishing buddy with me, he said that it was tough to fish when the boat was anchored up. Him being in the front, my rods at the back were an obstacle. So the next time we went I let the anchor down. When it had settled and enough rope let out I made a loop and tied a second length of rope to it. Then I took the end of this rope back to the rear and started to pull on it. When the boat had moved sideways on to the tide I fastened the rope to a cleat. In a dropping tide of one metre and no wind this was OK and Frank was able to get his two rods into the water. If it was windy I would not need to do this as the wind will push the boat sideways also it would be dangerous to do this if the water was rough!

Roger with a 5kg queen fish run, Frank got a hit straight away. Something hit his bait like a torpedo, I quickly reeled in my rod, went to get the camera – and the fish was gone! The line had some how got caught up in his multiplier reel and the fish just snapped it in a heartbeat. That set the tone for the day, he got a further seven bites which between getting chewed off or the fish getting off left him a bit frustrated. I had a big queen on a float rig, he jumped out of the water and broke my main line as he landed. I have to say that I used to leave my big rods set up, with the weight on the main line. This weight chaffs the braid line more than quickly if it was monfilment line, so now I will rig up each time!

Only small catches on Scott's boat

Things have been quiet on Captain Deang's boat, Scott's guys only got 3 fish off the back; 2 queen fish and a small barracuda. Odd as at this time of year catches should be better. However last summer they did pull in some bumper catches which is most unusual. When the weather is dodgy, I have been trolling around Koh Krok, and the south end of Koh Larn for horse mackerel (bpla thoo)

Seven bites but the fish kept getting off

So we got out to Koh Man Wichia just as the tide started to Scott with a queen fish

Muay

Thai Kickboxing Ask the average farang tourist in Thailand what they believe is the spirit of the country and you’ll probably get an answer such as, “Friendliness,” or, “Generosity,” or if the tourist is more well versed, “Sanook,” the Thai idea that fun should be incorporated into every aspect of life. The answer would probably not be “Aggression,” or, “Combat,” yet these are the essence of Thailand’s most enduring popular sport and possibly it’s most popular non-culinary export: Muay Thai Kickboxing On any given day, all across Thailand, men and boys will be preparing to, recovering from or engaging in serious hand to hand combat. They will kick banana trees in half with their shins. They will hold one another by the neck with their gloved fists while striking with their elbows and knees and attempting to throw one another to the ground. They will stoically stand and trade kicks to the ribs and kidneys without flinching or attempting to block. They will exercise for hours and hours only to end the day strengthening their bones for when they will inevitably block a potentially deadly blow with the bones of their forearms or shins. And yet the kind spirit of friendliness still pervades this deadly serious combat sport - the fighters train together, spar together and after matches and even between rounds you can often see the fighters hug, smile and compliment one another. Try finding that in western boxing.

Muay Thai origins from China The spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship one finds in muay Thai may have as much to do with its history as it does with the communal training camps where the boxers are raised as a family and learn their craft. The ancient origins of this now hugely popular sport were lost to the mists of time after the sacking of the 14th century Thai capital by a Burmese invasion force, but the legendary origins are quite similar to that of many martial arts, and even begin in the same place: China. First introduced by migrants from the southern Chinese steppes, muay boran, or ‘ancient boxing’, is a group of regional boxing forms that are collectively the spiritual ancestors to muay Thai. Each area had

78 78

PATTAYA TRADER

its own style, but when competitions were held they all had the same, frankly frightening, rules: No hair pulling, eye gouging, grappling or hitting while the opponent is down. If these rules sound a bit brutal consider that muay boran was a martial art in the truest sense of the term: It was a method of waging war and a crucial component of Thai military training meant to condition the practitioner’s body into an actual weapon.

King Petch was a Muay Thai boxer Over time the sport became more codified and less brutal. Bare knuckle boxing gave way first to hemp rope bindings and eventually to western gloves. The sport grew in popularity not only with the common people but with royalty as well, with one king, Sri Saan Petch, earning the moniker The Tiger King for his habit of disguising himself with a tiger mask so that his subjects would not shy away from combat with him. Over the centuries Thai boxing has grown from an art of self preservation to a spectacle of sports exhibition to the striking art that virtually all modern mixed martial arts competitors must learn. And to think, the first modern boxing ring wasn’t built in Thailand until the 1920s.

Legal to gamble on Muay Thai matches

If you’re watching on television you’ll see the fighter's vital statistics: Fights fought, won and lost. Height, weight, age, and name. In person you’ll see a thronging crowd carefully considering each fighter, analyzing their bodies and their prefight dance: The wai khru ram muay. It may seem strange to a westerner to see a man dance in the four corners of a ring he is about to spill sweat and maybe blood in, but to a Thai boxer it is a way to pay respect to his trainers as well as the audience and, in older times, to apologize to any royalty present for the brutality that is a boxing match. A fighter’s wai khru can tell the savvy observer much about his fitness, his style and even who his trainers have been. And why does the audience pay such close attention? Because they want to know on whom and how much to wager. The outcome of a boxing match is one of the few events a punter can legally gamble on in Thailand. Gambling is an integral part of the muay thai experience with usually small but not uncommonly very large sums of money being wagered on either blue or red. It is no

SPORT & LEISURE

wonder that the pregame and opening rounds of a match are so closely scrutinized.

Five rounds of furious kickboxing The fight lasts five rounds of three minutes each and most fights go the full five rounds. Unless there is a knock-out, which is uncommon, or a surrender, which is incredibly rare, the fighters are in it for the long haul and so they tend to take it slow in the first round, circling, measuring one another, throwing testing punches and trying to tempt one another into an aggressive mistake. In the second round you can expect more blows to be exchanged and the rhythmic drum music you might not have noticed in the first round to build in tempo and volume. This is a trend that will continue, the music simultaneously matching and driving the furiousity of the boxers. By the end of the second round you can expect most of the wagers to be placed and the crowd to really start cheering for their chosen fighter. With the intensity of the crowd, the music and the pressure to win by points or knock-out growing with each passing second the third round is one of serious excitement and often marks the turning point of the match.

Muay Thai boxers have incredible stamina If the fighter who is ahead in the third round is behind at the end of the fourth it can be considered a real upset, and both fighters know it, so you can expect the underdog to really provoke a brawl. There will be heated exchanges, knock-downs, throwdowns and tight grappling with knees and elbows searching for soft points at every moment. It’s often in the middle of the third round that one fighter will emerge as the obvious favourite and that punters who bet on the underdog will desperately try to make a counter bet to recoup their potential loss. It’s not hard to imagine they rarely get any takers. By the middle of the fourth round the fighters will have begun to tire, but they will still be making their trainers proud. Truly, muay thai boxers have incredible stamina, but it is difficult not to when you have a stadium full of fans throwing their fists in the air and howling with every kick or punch landed and the spirits of your

www.pattayatrader.com

ancestors watching you from the afterlife. If both fighters are standing at the end of the fifth round the four judges, seated on the four sides of the ring, will choose a winner who will thank the crowd, pose for the cameras and make way for the next pair of pugilists.

Muay Thai match shows you the real Thais To visit a muay Thai match is to experience the pride of Thailand and to see a side of the Thai people it's incredibly easy to overlook. Reserved and – dare I say? - sweet in public, a packed boxing stadium is one of the very few places where you can be pushed around by a crowd of hollering Thais or hear the deafening exultation following a knock-down punch. While there is no comparison to the workout the fighters are getting, it is impossible not to be energized by the experience and to leave a feeling that you've truly taken part.

The ancient origins of this now hugely popular sport were lost to the mists of time To visit a muay Thai match is to experience the pride of Thailand

Fundamentals of the Back Swing Dear Golfers, Thanks again for taking your time to read through our instruction. This week we will talk about the back swing. Probably the most talked about topic in the golf swing. In the next few photos I will show you, what we at TPR believe, to be the simplest way to make a good and solid back swing. This is essential to make a simple move downwards to the ball and through to the target.

For more information, go to www.tprgolfacademy.com or email info@tprgolfacademy.com

Plane check As you can see here my club head and hands are matching up in on line. This ensures that we are on a correct plane. Now we are not to far inside or outside of our plane and it makes it alot easier to set the club back into half way up maintaining a good plane.

First step is always a sound set-up and to stay grounded in balance.

One piece take away Notice how my shoulders and arms form a triangle taking the club away together with body arms. Shaft is parallel with the ground whilst my toe of the club points up and we are able to see the club face and its grooves. The key move here is to set the wrist correctly at start to keep the face square.

Half way up Here you can see that my club still points down at the ball, again ensuring a good plane to turn everything into the top. My hands are in front of my chest and upper body, this way we will always have enough room to swing the club up and down. Otherwise we might get stuck on the way down then compensate for it through the ball.

Now we are looking pretty good. My club face is nicely hidden by the shaft of the club being square, my left arm is nice and straight forming a line with my shoulders, right elbow points down to the ground. Now we are ready to swing this power package down correctly. But this will have to wait till the next issue.......stay tuned! See you next month.........

Aston Martin Vanquish Aston Martin is known for its high-end cars many of which have featured in several of the James Bond movies over the years. The Vanquish is arguably Aston Martin's flagship coupe and it has recently had a modest makeover to increase its already strong appeal. This quintessentially British car has stayed true to its sports heritage, with Aston Martin keen not to exploit an already over populated SUV crossover market. The new model will be available only in limited supply to preserve its sought after status. The Vanquish sports a 576 hp front fitted engine and a new eight speed gearbox leading to lower carbon emissions and better fuel consumption. The Vanquish can squeeze out 7.8 km per liter as compared to the previous model’s 6.9 km. There have been some improvements to the suspension also. The engine is a 6.0-liter V12 power plant that can provide up to 630 Nm of torque. The Vanquish is capable of 0 - 100 kph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 323 kph using a rear wheel drive train.

The tyres fitted as standard are 255/35 ZR20s and 305/20 ZR20s. Wheels sport a double 5-spoke design in an aluminum and black finish. The Vanquish comes with a sports button that will enable you to crank up the power and enjoy lower gear driving. The Launch Control feature remains in the latest model of the Vanquish, and assists with acceleration from a stop point. Adjustable suspension comes as standard boasting Bilstein dampers The Vanquish handles very well even on winding roads and still preserves a comfortable ride with the slightly firmer suspension not really spoiling things. It is only noticeable at high speeds and here it is highly advantageous to have in place. The 2+2 coupe has limited rear space so a 2+0 option is worth considering. You can personalize the Vanquish from the factory to get a unique look. Something you might well expect for the 25 million baht price tag.

Aston Martin Vantage GT The Aston Martin Vantage GT series starts at $100,000, around 3.2 million baht. With options you may find that expanding your expectations to around 4 million baht would be sensible. The Vantage GT will need to be imported from the U.S. as it is billed as a U.S. model but nonetheless it is an Aston martin and it can be bought for less than the price of a mid range Mercedes or BMW car. And with build quality in mind you would be forgiven for thinking that the Vantage GT is a much more expensive car than it actually is. The Vantage GT is powered by Aston Martin’s 4.7 liter V8

engine that provides 430 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque, slightly more than its predecessor, the Vantage S. It can move from 0 to 100kph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 306 kph, specs not too far from the Vanquish. The Vantage GT weighs in at 1610 Kg and comes with a six speed manual gearbox. A seven speed sequential gearbox operated by paddles is available as an optional extra, but many would no doubt prefer the non-sequential nature of the 6-speed unit. Side air intakes adorn the upper front wings in a way that makes them pleasing to the eye but also highly functional. Externally there are some nice design touches such as accents around the rear lights and front air intake. Five colors are available namely, Speedway White, Jet Black, Mariana Blue, Sky Fall Silver and Alloro Green. The boldly marked GT signature is easily visible at the lower door line on the rear of the vehicle. Yellow flashes adorn the roof line, the front grill and the exposed break pad enclosures giving the Vantage a fiery look especially when traveling at high speeds. Inside, a high tech dashboard and leatherclad steering wheel await. Bright flash stitching marks the boundaries of the centre console and other elements as well as featuring prominently on the seams of the front seats. Arguably the pricing of the Vantage means that the car is firmly pitched against competitive offerings such as the Porsche 911 Carrera or the F type Jaguar. Yet for many just owning an Aston Martin maybe enough to tip the scales, since these have been rare cars of late and this makes them all the more sought after.

Bang Saen Thailand

Speed Festival There simply isn’t a motorsport event in Thailand that comes anywhere close to the ‘Bang Saen Thailand Speed Festival’. It’s the highlight of the racing year and in 2014 it looks very much like it’s going to be exactly the same story. In fact for Pattaya motorsport fans there is extra anticipation as this year two of the TSS four events have taken place well outside the racing ‘heartland’ and so local spectators haven’t seen top level national motorsport in action since the premier raced at Bira Circuit back in July. Usually, Pattaya fans have two dates a year at the city’s Bira Circuit for their diaries, but this year the second visit was replaced by a long trip to the brand new track in Buriram. So it’s been a bit of a wait, but it’s going to have been well worth it. At this year’s busy press conference about the Bang Saen Speed Festival, the organisers’, Thailand Super Series, were able to present full details of an event that promises to be even bigger, better and brighter than ever before. There was a large attendance from local, regional and national media for the press conference and interest is certainly building up very fast now. Pattaya media were well represented at the press conference including the Pattaya Trader Magazine.

continuously from Tuesday to Sunday, while there will be new events included, such as a cycling ‘Criterium’, and new leisure features, including the debut of the ‘Bang Saen Landmark Pavilion’ for spectators at Laem Taen as well as a much expanded Activity Zone on Beach Road. The festival will take place from 9-14 December.

Bangsaen will be much bigger and more glamorous than ever before – that was the clear message coming out of the press conference. The ‘Speed Festival’ is a fast growing event that never stays still and for this edition there will be an extra day added into the programme, meaning the action on track will run

Combined electronic fuel injection The Scrambler Icon sports a four stroke, 90-degree engine that features an L-twin cylinder, single overhead camshaft and two desmodromic valves per cylinder. It has a capacity of 803 cc, or 409 cubic inches with the bore being 88mm and the stroke 66mm. The compression ratio is 11.0:1. The engine can provide max power of 75 hp at 8250 rpm and can produce 68Nm of torque at 5750 rpm. For cooling Ducati have opted for an aircooled system. The power plant also features electronic fuel injection using a 50mm throttle body as well as Marelli electronic ignition. The engine is fitted to a single stainless steel muffler Exhaust system with that has an aluminum exterior cover and incorporates a catalytic converter and two lambda probes. The engine is connected to a six-speed gearbox that is operated by an APTC wet multiplate clutch with mechanical control. This powers a chain drive that has 15 sprockets on the front drive wheel and 46 sprockets on the rear. The gear ratios have been carefully chosen for maximum efficiency and are: first gear, 2/13 second gear, 30/18 third gear, 28/21 forth gear, 26/23 fifth gear 22/22 and sixth gear 24/26. The frame is a tubular steel Trellis frame and for the front suspension a Kayaba 41 mm fork has been used giving front wheel travel of 150mm or 5.9 inches. For the rear suspension a Kayaba pre-load adjustable rear shock is used giving the same wheel travel for the rear wheel as for the front.

Well proportioned for taller riders ABS comes as standard on both the front and rear wheel braking systems, with the front brake making use of a 330mm single disc with a 4 piston caliper, while the rear wheel has a 245 mm disc and single piston caliper. Wheels are 10 spoke light alloy affairs with the rear wheel 5.5 inches x 17 inches and front wheel slight larger at 18 inches but thinner at only 3 inches across. For tyres the bike is fitted as standard with a Pirelli MT 60 RS 110/80 R18 on the front and a 180/55 R17 on the rear. For overall dimensions the bike is well proportioned. It stands at a height of 1150 mm or 45.3 in, and has an overall length of 2165mm or 85.2 inches. It is 845 mm or 33 inches wide at its widest point. The wheelbase is a compact 1455mm or 57.3 inches, especially when considering it against the bikes overall length. The seat height is set at a mid height level of 790mm or 31.1 inches, though a low seat which sits around 20mm or 0.8 inches lower is available as an optional extra. The difference is quite small and it would have been good to see this option explored further for shorter riders, but at least the option that is in place does exist. The seat is long and the handlebars set quite wide so it makes for a comfortable riding position nonetheless.

Cool looking LED front light The bike has a dry weight of 170kg or 375 pounds, and features a low centre of gravity, something that will be welcome by riders of a smaller stature. The fuel tank can hold 13.5 liters or 3.57 gallons of petrol, which gives the bike reasonable range. The bike features some nice extras such as an under-seat storage compartment with a USB socket, steel fuel tank with replaceable aluminum side panels and a front headlight with glass lens that also features a cool looking LED front light guide around the rim that can act as a side light. LED rear lights with diffuser, and easy to read LCD instrument panels are also part of the package. Overall Ducati have managed to produce a bike that captures classic riding credentials but also has some futuristic updates. The Scrambler Icon is available in a signature red and yellow color that makes it stand out from the crowd.

MOTOR & MARINE

The Princess 60

Flybridge cruiser The Princess 60 has found its place in the market as an elegant, reliable and powerful motor yacht that delivers a great on board experience. The newest 2014 model has made further strides in the provision of comfort and power. The exterior profile of the Princess 60 has been newly designed and features sharper lines and a much lower window line providing better panoramic views from inside the saloon.

Famous for being whisper quiet The Princess 60 is able to combine speed with responsiveness in a motor yacht that is famous for being whisper quiet even at higher speeds. It is a craft that has been re-engineered with the ever-demanding requirements of owners in mind. Acceleration is described by the makers as exhilarating and this is a powerboat that exudes superb design traits so that any trip can be a pleasure to undertake. The interior of the boat has been carefully crafted such that the maximum amount of light can penetrate into the seating areas. At the same time a system of blinds allows you to control the sunlight entering the interior spaces so that you can enjoy a perfect balance of nature and engineering. The wide windows can be useful at night time allowing for night views to be visible from the inside, with the blinds providing privacy at will.

Hand stitched leather and stainless steel As for its trademark quietness, the insulation fitted into the cabin will ensure a very peaceful trip. The interior has been provided with top class fittings including hand stitched leather paneling, and inlaid stainless steel details. A retractable glass frosted screen that can be activated at the touch of a button is amongst the extras in place to provide maximum flexibility to the living space. The craft has an overall length, including the pulpit, of 61 ft. 1 inch, or 18.61m. Without the pulpit the length comes in at 60ft 3 inches, or 18.36 meters. Hence the name used for the craft is the Princess 60. The yacht’s beam is 15ft 10 inches or 4.83 meters and its draft is 4 ft. 2 inches, approx. 1.27 meters. It boasts a displacement of 25,000 kg or 55,100 pounds, based on fuel and water tanks being fifty per cent full and no additional optional equipment on board.

Volvo engines give 33 knots top speed The Princess 60 has ample fuel capacity at 615 gallons or 2,800 liters as well providing for clean water capacity in the amount of 175 gallons or 793 liters, both of which provide peace of mind on any extended trip. Recommended engines are twin Volvo D13-800 (2 x 800mhp) that

www.pattayatrader.com

give a speed of between 31 and 33 knots. An alternative for higher performance is to fit twin Volvo D13-900 (2 x 900mhp)
which will increase the speed range to 33-35 knots. Princess yachts have been designed with safety in mind. The crafts are certified by the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association and are fully compliant with the safety standards set out by the American Boat and Yacht Council as well as to safety standards of the United States Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety.

Cabins with double and single beds The Princess 60 features no less than three spacious cabins on the lower deck with the owners state room taking up the full beam. This room has plenty of space to accommodate both the double bed that features a leather headboard as well as a sofa across its width. The room has en suite facilities also. A built in wardrobe is included which is of a good size, but yet it doesn’t impose on the room in any way. Large hull side windows make this a bright and airy room and further adds to the feeling of spaciousness. The other cabins also have en suite facilities and come with a queen-sized bed in the forward cabin and two singles in the mid positioned one. All cabins have built in storage spaces. As an option further en suite accommodation for 2 crew members can also be included.

Dining area on deck and in cabin On the main deck is a large saloon with forward galley. The main deck also features an elevated dining area. The saloon makes use of a built in C-shaped sofa as well as a smaller two seater. A similar style of seating is evident in the dining area which features booth seating in a wraparound fashion around a good-sized teak dining table. Many of the seats also double as storage areas. The galley features electric cooking appliances and a double sink unit as well as plenty of work space as part of what is a nearly semi circular design. Outside a hydraulic lifting platform is fitted as standard to assist with launch and recovery, tender storage and also as a bathing platform.

The Cranchi Fly 54 is a new model and you can see that they have a yacht with a very modern sports look about her. Again the Italian style really shows up as you view the exterior of the yacht. Once inside the yacht you will be surprised with the layout and the space available in the yacht. Beautifully furnished as only the Italians can, you will fall in love with her modern but tasteful interior. Another redeeming feature is the head space in the saloon and the cabins. Cranchi is creating great living area’s that give you the feeling of a much larger yacht. Our new Cranchi Fly 54 is available now for viewing and sea trial subject to availability. Kawasaki Z250 2014: 130,000 Thb

Due to professional relocation (back to Laos), I am reluctantly putting my Kawasaki Z250 2014 for sale. Bike was purchased in January 2014, gently run in for 1,000 km. Current odometer reads 5,000+ kilometers. Regular checks and maintenance done at Kawasaki Mittyon Pattaya, green book in my name. Comes equipped with a few modifications, listed below (all original parts are available and will be handed over with the bike). - Bikers rear set (red) - Musarri GLD slipon racing exhaust (gold) - Higher windshield. A few minor scratches are visible on the tank. Bike can be seen in Ban Chang but I can easily ride to Pattaya or Rayong for seriously interested buyers. I am asking for 130,000 THB, slightly negotiable. This is no urgent/ desperate sale so please no silly offers. Tel. 0818056001 Ben 130,000 THB

Disappointing

Miss Daisy Are you one of those old farts who spend his remaining days grumbling about the standard of driving on Thai roads and the cost of Heinz beans in Tesco Lotus? Or are you of the other persuasion – nothing to do with which way your sexual proclivities lie – is your glass half empty or half full? If you are one of the latter, you are like me. I wake every morning to blue skies and sunshine with a smile on my face. I bless the day I decided to move lock, stock and one smoking barrel to Pattaya. I am in the Land of Smiles: when I walk fifty metres, I see more attractive girls about me than you can see in a UK marathon. I am in the Garden of Eden but there is a snake in the grass known in teaching circles as Ascension Deficit Disorder. Golfers may refer to it as a Sch-wing and a miss. Athletes talk of Taking the gold at the Lake Flaccid Olympics. Bankers, I said bankers, may be bouncing the check of Love. In short I am alluding to that dreaded condition which affects men of a certain age, in a hot climate, with a new sexual partner, after a few drinks; Brewers Droop. I am not ashamed to admit, on occasions, I have been a few parts shy of an erector set. My least favourite film is The Null Monte showing twice weekly at a cinema down Soi Six. My first thought was what a waste! I am not talking money matters here though it does matter, I mean. I am talking about the beautiful face with the enchanting smile hovering over you and yours; the perfect nubile body with its soft coffee-coloured skin. Where was I? A thousand baht is not to be sneezed at, and if at the end it all goes pear-shaped or rather not banana shaped, well sometimes the journey is more exciting than the destination. Fear not, however, help is at hand in the shape of the little purple pill or sachet. Over the last four years, I’ve done an extensive survey on this type of medicament. The brand name varies but usually ends in AGRA; Viagra, Kamagra, Edegra or Niagora. My studies began when I confided in my son about my little problem. It’s not something a son wants to hear from his father. He’s already resigned himself to inheriting your fading eyesight and the same bald hair pattern. I tried a few euphemisms. ‘So there I was, all doled up with no where to go.’ No reaction. ‘The other night I found myself, 180 degrees short of perpendicular Heaven.’ He was very good when he finally understood I was performing with Flaccido Domingo. We went to a pharmacy where he ruined his reputation by asking for some chemical assistance while I skulked outside. He came back with a sachet for me and a date with the pretty little pharmacist who saw him as a bit of a challenge, I think. Since then I have never looked back or down for that matter.

I have become emboldened enough to discuss the after effects with the pharmacist and try new brand names. (In my case, the pharmacist is a helpful young fellow on Soi Bukao.) We’ve got quite friendly as I go in his shop twice a week. It was difficult explaining at first why I only wanted his products on a Monday and a Wednesday; why I couldn’t take a box home with me. Eventually he got the picture. He dubbed me ‘Less than Magic Johnson’ and I asked him how he knew so much about these products. He was quite open about it; his uncle tried every new brand and delivered his verdict. His uncle’s 76!

Living in Interesting Times

I

t began as just a quiet evening at the local Thai restaurant/ bar; an evening like many before it. A few friends and I would gather to drink, joke, discuss, share problems and, once the alcohol kicked in, share solutions. Generally, with no fixed agendas or dates to be rigidly adhered to, the number of bums on seats around our humble table could be anywhere between two and nine. Last evening, the final person to join our motley crew was Hans, a native of Germany. Instead of giving him the usual friendly rebuke for being late without a signed note from his mother, we noticed he was carrying something large to the table. “I have an excuse,” he smiled, anticipating our reaction. With that he placed the parcel on the table, carefully opened it up to reveal a large, hot, aromatic pizza. I don’t know how it is with other people but, within our little group, the offering of a pizza will usually exonerate you from even the most heinous of crimes. Bring a pizza and all is forgiven. Hans explained he had been making it all afternoon from his own recipe and brought it along for us to try. He said it was a chicken curry pizza. The looks around the table were evidence that none of us had ever heard of a chicken curry pizza. Personally, I don’t even like a chicken pizza. My long-standing rule is that pizza must contain red meat, never white, which automatically excludes fish and chicken. Someone then suggested they had never heard of a curry being served with cheese. This is true, whether it be a Thai curry, Indian curry or Malaysian curry. It is just not done! However, there was still that aroma wafting across the table and the simple fact it was a ‘pizza’ meant nobody was going to refuse a slice. Just one bite was enough to tell us that, whatever the combination was, it was a success. The pizza was delicious. Hans, using typical German ingenuity and Chaplinesque food combining skills, was on a winner. He and his grateful friends then spent the rest of the evening trading pizza recipes. As well as being a great pizza cook, Hans has another endearing quality. He is a conspiracy theorist. He does not wear an aluminium hat to stop the CIA satellites from frying his brain with a laser, but to Hans, every major event in world history – and every major event to come – has been orchestrated by an evil, self-serving, elite known as the ‘invisible hand’. I am not going to divulge who these evil, self-serving people are, but let’s just say they are the ‘usual suspects’. Have you ever tried to argue with a true conspiracy theorist? It is impossible. You can quote well-documented historical facts

116 116

PATTAYA TRADER

and well-known people until you are blue in the face, but their argument is that these ‘facts’ have been distorted and rewritten by the conspirators themselves to cover their tracks. I have argued that true conspiracies and cover-ups are almost always exposed and use the Watergate incident as an example. He responds that Watergate was only exposed because the ‘invisible hand’ behind it wanted it to be exposed. The debate resembles a dog chasing its tail. We have become used to Hans’ opinions so whenever he starts to get overly involved in his passionate argument, we change the subject. The most popular topics are women, booze, movies and women. These subjects are very benign, non-combative and a lot of fun. Now we can add another one: pizza. Hans’ chicken curry pizza was not so unusual, and there are a lot of other strange and exotic food combinations out there. I explained to the guys that the most effective way to find them is to go out on a bar crawl with a few mates. Take a good supply of cash with you and start in the late afternoon. At around midnight, when Mr Alcohol is in firm control, call it a night and head home. But, and this is the crucial part of the plan, on the way home stop in at a big supermarket – Tesco or Friendship for instance – just to ‘pick up a few necessities’ to last for the next couple of days. With Mr Alcohol driving the bus and with a pocket still full of money, let the fun begin! The following afternoon you wake up a little the worse for wear and with only a vague recollection of anything after nine o’clock the night before. You struggle to the bathroom and then to the kitchen. You turn on the coffee maker or kettle to start the recovery process ... and then you open the fridge. What the …! The fridge is packet to capacity and a jar of Jellied Eel that had only been held in place by the closed door falls to the floor. Just as you ask yourself where this all came from, little flickers of memory return about your midnight shopping spree from hell. Apparently that little voice in your head, the one whose cell door had been unlocked by your friend Mr Alcohol, had been very busy indeed. “Don’t buy the usual stuff you always buy. Be adventurous and get things you’ve always wanted to try. Don’t be a wimp. Money is no object.” You remove a large can of Iranian Plumbs in Lemongrass syrup. “Interesting concept. Obviously the plan had been to completely confuse my tastebuds.” Then you find a jar of Pickled Herring, which you don’t like, and your freezer is packed with a 4kg ‘budget’ bag of frozen broccoli. The litre of ‘Death by Chocolate’ ice cream has melted in the vegetable crisper, the six-pack of scented soap is precariously balanced over the egg tray and one whole frozen duck doesn’t look so frozen anymore. At this point the best idea is to go back to bed and hope it was just a bad dream. That won’t work, but at least it will give you a few more moments of contentment before facing the hard reality. Whether all the strange and exotic food now in your fridge is reality or a conspiracy, it will certainly make life interesting for a while.

The iPhone 6

and iPhone 6 Plus

Apple's recent release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus was highly anticipated and they have managed to deliver on all fronts. The company that is known for its small footprint devices appears to have succumbed to considerable competition from its rivals, most of who first saw the need for smart phones to be larger affairs

The iPhone 6 base model is indeed larger than the iPhone 5 and all previous versions. It sports a 4.7-inch screen with 1334 x 750 pixels, at 326 pixels per inch density. It is significantly larger than the 4-inch retina grade screen of the iPhone 5 series. The iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand is even larger and has a 5.5-inch screen with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, capable of displaying HD video. The resolution is 401 pixels per inch. This latter model is arguably where Apple is pinning its hopes against rivals such as Samsung but the release of the iPhone 6 smaller model adds a new dimension to the market. It means that Apple is making compact, mid sized and large sized phones cornering every part of the market in terms of size. One thing that Apple has done with its new phones is that it has made them thinner. The iPhone 6 is just 6.8 mm thick and weighs in at 129 grams. The iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 mm thick and is slightly heavier at 172 grams. Both sport curved aluminum sides, a move away from the straight cut sides of the iPhone 4 and 5 series and more of a throw back to the days of the original iPhone. That said, with

the new phones being thinner the curved design still looks like a new departure, since the display seamlessly joins with the body. To house the larger display the iPhone 6 Plus has a larger body than its counterpart. It is about 1 cm wider and 2 cm longer than the iPhone 6 base model. This may not sound like a large difference but it is significant, since it is quite hard to use the larger phone with just one hand, whilst the smaller model fits quite snugly into your palm. Another consideration is carrying the phones and although consumers have arguably got used to larger phones courtesy Apple's rivals, there is still the constraint that a phone that boasts a 5.5-inch display is hard to fit into a trouser front pocket. The iPhone 6, as a mid sized device, is small enough to fit and this may make it a model of choice for many, though the pixel real estate is certainly less than its larger counterpart. Toughened glass has been used on both models and

although there were reports by some early users of the larger model seeing possible bending after storing it in their back pockets, this appears to be largely resolved now. Both phones use IOS 8, so here remains the difference compared to rival phones that use Android, but interestingly the new update incorporates some Android features such as the ability to add third party products and access apps from a notification centre. Apple has a definite following especially considering it was arguably

the pioneer of this sort of graphical touch screen user interface. The phones can display 20 application icons on the home screen. Both phones use Apples new dual core 64-bit A8 processor running at 1.4Ghz and both use a Power VR GX6450 quad core graphics processor. The new processing power means smoother video, multi app usage and better battery life. Expect to get 11 hours video or 11 hours browsing out of the iPhone 6’s 1,810 mAh battery and more than 14 hours video or 12 hours browsing using the iPhone 6 Plus’s 2,915 mAh battery. The models are well priced in the market. You can pick up a 16GB small sized iPhone 6 for around 28,000 baht, rising to 32,000 baht for the 64GB model and approx. 35,000 baht for the 128Gb model. For the iPhone 6 Plus models expect to pay around 4,000 baht more for each one respectively.

in ease of doing business In the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) Doing Business 2015 survey, Thailand has increased its position from 28th place to 26th place according to the World Bank Country Director for South East Asia, Mr. Ulrich Zachau who is based in Bangkok. In top position was Singapore, closely followed by Hong Kong, New Zealand and South Korea filling up the top four spots. Taiwan came in at 19th position whilst Malaysia was the fourth easiest place to do business in Asia. - The data shows that many economies in the region made it easier for businesses to pay taxes in the past year, says Ulrich Zachau. Vietnam reduced the corporate income tax rate. China enhanced its electronic filing and payment system – while also making business incorporation less expensive. Mongolia introduced a new electronic payment system.

Thailand improves

Such reforms are saving entrepreneurs valuable time. In Mongolia, businesses were able to see a reduction in the number of hours for tax compliance to 148 hours, from 192 hours. The new stats were on a par with some European countries such as Austria. Consistent regulatory reforms have improved the ease of doing business in the region in the past decade, and contributed to more business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Bank of Thailand might start stimulus The Bank of Thailand (BOT) hinted at possible stimulus measures citing risks that the economy might fail to reach its 1.5 per cent growth target this year. Exports are also being closely watched as there is a possibility that there will be a contraction. BOT Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul says: - We are watching closely. If economic growth continues at a low level, it may be necessary for additional monetary policy. In its last meeting the bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) left interest rates on hold at two per cent, even though it was concerned about the slow pace of economic expansion. The bank of Thailand is trying to tread a fine line between fiscal constraint and the possible need for stimulus, noting that monetary measures were not necessarily a magic pill for all problems. The MPC has already reduced interest rates three times since the second quarter of last year from 2.75 per cent to the current two per cent level. The rate cuts have helped businesses but there has been relatively little impact from the moves. A labor shortage is still an issue and being more accommodative in terms of monetary policy would like not change that situation. Thailand has seen several uncertainties based on internal and external factors including the political impasse earlier in 2014, which served to drag the economy into a negative growth period, only to recover in the second half of this year. The overall net effect is a possible miss of the 1.5 per cent overall growth target for FY 2014. Exports have been hard hit due to reduced market prices of staples such as rubber and rice. Electronic products also saw price reductions and there were structural problems for export. For the full year 2014 period, exports are still set to fall from the previous year. As for tourism, due to a slowdown in Europe and conflicts in Russia the number of tourist arrivals to the Kingdom is expected

to be 25 million people, falling short of the 27 million people target. Thus the country will be more reliant on domestic demand and consumption. One of the things that the government is doing this year is to speed up approval for projects under the Board of Investment initiatives to help improve the economy.

Etihad 'Residence' suite is a hit A full hotel style suite aboard Etihad’s A380 super jumbo jet that costs up to US$20,000, (620,000 baht) has proved a hit with high flyers. The suite consists of three rooms - a living area, a double bedroom and an ensuite shower. It comes complete with a butler. The company reported that on its first 10 flights all suites had sold out, far exceeding the usual sales for first class booths, which stands at around a fifty per cent reservation rate. Etihad chief executive officer, James Hogan, says: - We've been quite happy with the take-up. There's a market there. The first flight of the A380 will be between Abu Dhabi and London on 27th December. The Airline uses Abu Dhabi as its hub and is currently the third largest gulf based carrier. It hopes that the new offering of the “Residence” suite will help it to outperform its rivals such as Qatar Airways and Emirates. Both of these airlines have recently started flying the A380 but, even though Emirates is working to upgrade its first class offering, neither have yet to offer anything as glamorous as the fully integrated suite. Etihad has ordered ten A380s and will deploy some on the London route whilst others will be used to fly to Sydney and New York. These significantly longer flights will be where the “Residence” suite will likely be all the more sought after. The London route is to become an all-A380 three times daily route.

YouTube is huge. How huge? If YouTube were a country it would be the third largest in the world, surpassed in population only by China and IndiaConsistent regulatory reforms have improved the ease of doing business in the region in the past decade, and contributed to more business opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Nearly half of all internet users are regular YouTube viewers, producers or both. Video can be understood by anyone of any educational level, nationality and, thanks to YouTube, can be created and shared by anyone. This accessibility has led to the creation and sharing of a sea of video of all descriptions. Whether they’re shot by amateurs or produced by professionals, planned by committee or captured spontaneously the one thing that all YouTube videos have in common is that once they’re uploaded anyone, anywhere in the world can view them. And they do. In droves. If you haven’t already recognized the marketing potential of this enormous worldwide audience of engaged viewers you soon will. Some experts predict that by this time next year YouTube will have surpassed Google as the world’s largest search engine. Understanding the You Tube trends will separate the swimmers from the sinkers, so let’s have a look at some of the important developments in the world of online video sales and how you can use them to improve your YouTube kung fu. 1. Sponsored Content This method is much like television advertising. The sponsor inserts his advertising message into the video experience. This can be done in the video itself via a mention, a background image or as a pay per click advertisement. The benefit of this method is that it can reach a wide audience and takes very little forethought - the most important part is simply finding videos your target audience likes.

slanders the competition. A cosmetics company may hire a video blogger to report that their competition’s eyeliner gave her pink eye, or that they test on animals. Positive content says something good about the sponsor’s product. This was a common tactic used by electronic cigarette companies not too long ago, with hip, sexy and usually young people talking about how much they enjoyed their new e-cig. And it worked. The benefit of this method of advertising is that when it works it works better than other forms.

2. Original Content Contributing original, quality content to YouTube is one of the best ways to become popular and share your message and selling on YouTube is all about being popular and shareable. People from all walks of life produce and consume YouTube content and virtually all topics are fair game. Want to sell vacation home management services? How about a series of videos on how to attract renters? Selling honeymoon getaways? A video on avoiding common wedding planning pitfalls might be just the ticket. The key to selling with original content is to be upfront and honest - yes, you’re representing a company or plugging a product, but you’re still giving people what they want. The benefit of this is that you are likely to get engaged, loyal and satisfied customers that create even more engaged, loyal and satisfied customers. 3. Guerilla Content A very high-risk manouvre for the gamblers out there in buymy-stuff-land, this method is the astroturfing of the video sales world. Similar to genuine original content, guerilla content purports to be unsolicited, spontaneous, amateur content but is in reality bought and paid for by whomever benefits most from the message. There are two types of guerilla content: Negative and positive. Negative content
