FLIGHT OF THE GIBBON THE GREENEST ATTRACTION To be absolutely honest with you, when I found out we were doing a special 'Green Pattaya' take on the different attractions we offer tourist , I might have drawn a slight blank... are there any environmentally friendly activities in Pattaya? It was research time. Of-course It wasn’t too long into my detective work that I came across 'The Flight of the Gibbons'. Though I have certainly seen the posters and advertisements throughout the city, I had never taken the time to investigate a little bit further what they exactly offer, and let me tell you, I was happily surprised at what I found out! I have never considered how much work and effort actually goes into building, maintaining and running this rainforest zip-line course. So before we get deeper into the article I just wanted to thank Ben and all the staff at the flight of the Gibbons who allowed me to see and enjoy this wonderful jungle experience

It's all about the safety: Straight away you will notice that safety is certainly important at the flight of the Gibbons. After the multiple safety briefings, you are basically told not to do anything: The guides will ensure you are always hooked to the safety lines and move along in the right direction. “One of the factors that make flight of the Gibbons such a great and interesting activity is that you get a sense of adventure whilst your there but at the same time you don't really have to do that much or put yourself in any danger at all”

One of the factors that make flight of the Gibbons such an interesting activity is that you get a sense of adventure whilst your there but at the same time you don't really have to do that much or put yourself in any danger at all.

From their constant concern with our safety to the very interesting details (like the species of trees and animals found around the rainforest) they would often tell us about, the trip would have not been as enjoyable as it was without the ranger's positive and helpful attitude.

Conclusion: Though slightly doubtful when I first started out on this experience, I can now rest assured that at some level, there are tour operators that do indeed care about the ecological side of tourism. There's a huge amount of time, money and resources invested in the flight of the Gibbons, and all of that really shows during this hour and a half jungle adventure.

As you would probably expect, the course is child friendly as well. As long as your kid is taller than 1 meter, there won't be any issues at all! Along the same lines, there's also a limit of 130 kg for a person's weight, but other than that, this activity can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their age, sex or body-build!

I was also happily surprised to find out that a portion of the profits earned by the Flight of the Gibbons is used to support environmental projects around the country.

What to expect: If you are anything like me, you love figures and statistics, so let me share some of the numbers that make the flight of the Gibbon's one of Pattaya's most popular and Eco-friendly attractions: • A total of 23 raised platforms that will allow you to experience the rainforest like never-before. • 3km of course that include 15 zip-lines, the longest of these being an impressive 300 meters long and a double zip line that will permit you to fly through the forest's canopy in pairs. • Aerial views of the entire rainforest from beautiful tree houses, hanging bridges and raised stations, some of these more than 50 meters above the ground! So you are certainly in for a treat • A chance to experience nature by immersing yourself in it without causing any damage. Remember this entire attraction has been thought out to allow people to get extremely close to nature with the smallest amount of impact.

From their constant concern with our safety to the very interesting details they would often tell us about, the trip would not have been as enjoyable as it was without the ranger's positive and helpful attitude. Other than the wonderful sights and adrenaline pumping zip-line flights, it was really nice to notice how committed the guides were to creating an enjoyable, fun and educational experience.

I was also happily surprised to find out that a portion of the profits earned by the Flight of the Gibbons is used to support environmental projects around the country. Though most efforts are done in northern Thailand in the reforestation work that is gaining a lot of traction in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, there are talks of organizing other environmental projects around our area in Chonburi as-well as in some of the newer locations such as their latest station in Cambodia which opened it's doors in 2013. Overall, this attraction definitely fulfilled and surpassed my expectations. I would certainly recommend the Flight of the gibbons to any families, couples or traveling groups that are looking for an adventurous day out that is also extremely safe, it can also be a great corporate day out too! The Go-gibbon obstacle course, in particular, is an amazing team building activity that is as challenging as it is fun!

Interactive, adventurous, educational and extremely safe... What else is there to say? As far as Pattaya goes, the flight of the Gibbon should be high up on your to-do list as it allows you to experience nature in a way you never have before. Interactive, adventurous, educational and extremely safe... What else is there to say?

Temple of a Million Bottles

I

t’s easy to see why Thailand’s been dubbed the Land of Smiles. But with literally tens of thousands of Buddhist temples or “Wats”, if you prefer the Thai word, scattered throughout the kingdom; a more appropriate epithet for Siam just might be the “Land of Temples”. Let’s face it, whether you’re a local, an expat or a day tripper – who among us has not been to at least one of Thailand’s many opulently gilded temples? These lavish, colorful, and sometimes gaudy places of worship attract millions of visitors annually and are remarkable sights to behold. However, when pondering the many building materials that were needed to fabricate these stunning structures; rubbish, trash and garbage are typically not among them. I doubt if it was Siddhartha Gautama who many of us may know as the Buddha, but some sage once said, “There is no such thing as garbage, just useful stuff in the wrong place.” The Buddhist monks who inhabit the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, situated near the Cambodian border in the Khun Han district of the Northeastern province of Sisaket, apparently took the above words to heart. You see, some thirty years ago the religious men were enlightened enough to have determined where the proper place for garbage actually was. While doing so, they also gave an entirely new meaning to the ditty “100 bottles of beer on the wall”! In short, they figured out a way to bottle-up karma by literally constructing each and every building on the temple grounds from over a million discarded glass bottles!

Temple of Beer Just to be sure, for those of you who are singularly minded, this paragraph is not a reference to Walking Street or the nearest beer bar complex! Fabricated primarily from empty green Heineken and brown Chang beer bottles, Wat Láan Kùat or the Million Bottle Temple as the locals call it, resides some 370 miles northeast of Bangkok. The practice of reusing empty beer bottles as a building material began back in 1984 as an inexpensive and colorful way in which to decorate the monk’s quarters. Visitors to the temple couldn’t help but notice the glass glittering in the sun, and the clever manner in which the empties were utilized. Before long, the entire community found themselves collecting and then donating glass bottles to the Wat hoping to make merit and increase their good fortune. At first the monks were unsure of how best to utilize this unexpected windfall. But after some serious head scratching and a bit of sober meditation they hit upon the idea of transforming the waste into wonder. They opted to use the abandoned bottles to create a place to pray that was functional, beautiful, and environmentally friendly. When one looks at Wat Láan Kùat today it’s obvious that the monks took their recycling duties very seriously. Over the years, their bottle building endeavors have expanded bottle by bottle and structure by structure. Today more than 1.5 million bottles have been set into concrete to create the twenty or so eco-friendly edifices comprised of a main temple, great hall, prayer rooms, crematorium, water tower, multiple bungalows used as monk’s quarters, and even a toilet block. Heineken and Chang beer bottles serve as the primary building components. However, various other types of clear, brown and green bottles have been used, including Mekhong whiskey, M-150 and Red Bull energy drink discards, and at least one decade’s old 7-Up bottle! The bottle caps that once sealed these binned bottles were also integrated into the architecture in the form of decorative mosaic murals, one of which captured the ever serene countenance of Buddha himself. Despite its unique construction, visitors should be reminded that the Wat is a working temple where people go to worship every day. As such, it calls for the same respect and decorum as any other temple in Thailand. The Temple of a Million Bottles is considered a “work in progress”. Therefore, the monks, anxious to continue their recycling

efforts are more than happy to receive donations in the form of portable wealth and empty glass bottles, both of which will be put to use expanding the temple.

The Bottle House As a sustainable building material, the humble vessel known as the bottle does not fade, it allows natural light to penetrate, and it is surprisingly easy to maintain. The earliest example of a structure made primarily from bottles is believed to have been the “Peck Bottle House” built in the small but booming silver mining town of Tonopah, Nevada by William F. Peck in 1902. At a time when the prices of lumber and brick were going through the roof and other traditional building materials were less than plentiful in the western desert, Mr. Peck managed to gather some 10,000 empty beer, whiskey, soda and medicine bottles from the surrounding saloons and emporiums to construct his abode. Other res-

Before long, numerous other “bottle houses” could be seen in the desert mining towns of the American west. Since then, bottles have frequently been used as an alternative building material and as an architectural feature in structures across the globe.

A Brick That Holds Beer In 1960, some fifty-something years after the pioneer Peck built his glass house, beer brewing magnate, Alfred Heineken, the man responsible for the beer in the emerald green bottle happened to be on the Caribbean island of Curacao. While there, two things lodged in his subconscious. First, the beaches were strewn with empty beer bottles, many bearing his name; and second, there was an acute shortage of affordable building materials. This of course, caused the island’s impoverished inhabitants to inhabit shabby shacks of inferior quality. Vexed by what he had seen, he one day realized that he had the ability to solve both of those problems … if only his empty bottles could somehow be used as bricks. Intent on transforming this vision into a reality Heineken enlisted the aid of a Dutch architect to help him devise a glass brick that was capable of holding beer. The initial attempts at creating glassware that could serve as both a bottle and a building material proved to be both unsightly and too expensive for mass production. However, a design known as the WOBO an acronym for “World Bottle” was eventually settled on. Unfortunately, for the residents of Curacao, and the rest of the world, the World Bottle that was to be both a bottle and a brick never caught on. Thus, only a few hundred thousand bottle bricks were ever made.

Why aren't you diving yet? I consider myself very lucky when I get the chance to write about Pattaya from another perspective than it's thriving real estate market and nightlife-related peculiarities. Today is one of those days: Let me tell you why you should skip that weekend beer session and head out towards the ocean, we are going diving buddy! I will warn you, given I am a certified diver who is rather obsessed with the underwater world, this article will be slightly biased towards how awesome diving really is. So, in an attempt to get you to understand the wonders of the aquatic realms, let me give you a few reasons to get your scuba gear on...

See things you never thought possible What can I tell you? I fully believe that as human beings we love to be surprised once in a while. When you are underwater however, every single new place you look is probably covered in the strangest and most amazing creatures and alien-looking coral structures. While diving right here in Pattaya (coral reefs located at the back of Koh Larn to be more precise) I have seen schools of fish thousands of fish in size, colorful seahorses, Nemo-looking clown fish and some very friendly sea turtles!

Pattaya is wreaking good! You might not be aware of this, but diving in Pattaya is actually recognized worldwide as one of the top wreck diving spots in the planet. Old military ships have been sunken around our lovely vice-city for the enjoyment of fish, corals and divers alike.Apart from offering an appropriate bed for coral to re-grow (making them very attractive diving sites), these ships are a great training exercise during underwater-rescue courses and professional wreck diving training.

It's a great way for lazy people to get fit

Look, I am in no way calling divers lazy or anything of the sort, it is hard work when you are doing it professionally! That said, one of the reasons I love scuba diving so much is because the slower you breathe and the more efficiently you move underwater, the longer and more enjoyable the dive will be! So in effect, you are encouraged to take it as slow and relaxed as possible, not a bad thing in my opinion. Once you get very good at conserving your air you will be able to stretch your dives up to 40 minutes or more, and let me assure you of something, it doesn’t matter how slow you do it, deepbreathing and swimming for that extended amount of time is a great and complete workout.

Conclusion:

Look, diving is quite possibly one of the best things you have never done. You live in Pattaya? Can you spare a few hours weekly to enjoy the oceans and the sun? Individuals and aspiring scuba masters from around the world come to Pattaya looking for this great opportunity, if you live here, why not make a weekend out of it? I can guarantee you you will enjoy it.

Just give our friends at Rabbit Scuba diving a call!

I have gone on trips with them a few times already and they are great, just contact them and before you know it will be on your way to discover some of the wonderful things our oceans are hiding! Scuba Rabbit Dive Centre Phone +66 (0)8 7667 4774 www.scubarabbit.com

Langkawi’s Monsoon Music Monsoon rain buckets down magnificently on my Langkawi roof. Here is weather to stay home for — a joyous crescendo of water music on the shingles. “Without rain you’ve got no rainforest,” an old Queenslander once told me (stating the obvious, laconically), but this is the Langkawi version of rain: an equatorial Niagara of dogs, cats, macaques and monitors. Five minutes later the forest is already dripping-dry, a squirrel pokes its head around a sunny bough and I’m out the door, exploring. Malaysia’s Pulau Langkawi is an air hop north from Kuala Lumpur or a zip out from the mainland ports of Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah (by a fast ferry sometimes known ominously as “the vomit comet”). Or by ferry from Thailand’s Satun town or Koh Lipe island. Langkawi’s 104-island archipelago is as far north as you can go on Malaysia’s Andaman coast without bumping into Thailand. Unlike some nearby islands eager for tourist dollars, Langkawi’s jungles and shores haven’t been heedlessly strip-mined to build pop-up resorts, bling malls and beer bars. The 10,000-hectare island and its satellite isles were declared a UNESCO Geopark in 2007 — that’s a stage below a World Heritage wilderness. “We haven’t got a Big Five here, like Africa,” says my Junglewalla Eco-tour guide, Shakira as we board a launch to cruise the Tanjung Rhu River in the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. “Instead, we have the Little Five,” she adds. They might also be called the Langkawi Flying Five: the flying lemur, flying lizard, flying squirrel, flying frog and flying paradise tree snake. I don’t actually spot any members of this aerial quintet — the Elusive Five? — as we head up the mangrove and limestone-hemmed river, but there are plenty of sea eagles, kingfishers and brahminy kites swooping low across the

water, scooping up fish as they go. A twometre water monitor basks on the shore. We watch macaque monkeys that have learned how to leap aboard tour boats — not ours, you varmints, no way! — and to intimidate the passengers into handing over snacks. Shakira tells me that, even more deviously, the local crab-eater macaques have figured how to hunt by “fishing” with their tail, using it as a lure, beside crab-holes on the beach. Crab grabs tail. Monkey grabs crab. You know the rest. It sounds extraordinary — but would a tour guide lie? (Don’t answer.) In this case I believe Shakira, an earnest and educated environmentalist; but more to the point, I believe that the kleptomane macaque is capable of almost any form of larceny short of grand theft auto. We pull into a wharf called Hole in the Wall, a fish farm-cum-restaurant. It has broad, submerged pens that hold among other marine (think, water consumption, land clearing, habitat depletion) but it’s easy see the game’s greenish offsets: open space, fresh air and exercise.

Over the Andaman horizon afternoon thunder begins rumbling like a dropped piano. Golfers, squirrels and macaques head for cover. The rain begins again as I reach my room in time for this green-on-green island’s next rousing performance of monsoon music.

They thrust their gleaming “faces” above the water, eyeball you a bit as you stroke their oil-smooth skin and then take food from your hand. Stingrays fed, we lunch on chicken satays and durian juice, then chug on, downriver to the sea’s karst cliffs where unique cycads grow, nourished only by whatever nutrients they draw from the limestone.

Langkawi, “the Jewel of Kedah” state, has been passed back and forward over the centuries between Siam-Thailand on one hand and Malay sultans and administrations on the other. The lush but undeveloped island began to bloom in the 1980s when the ever-competitive and combative Malaysian PM, Mahathir saw other Asian islands prospering from tourism. Let there be resorts and duty-free stores, he declared. And overnight there were, although not to the general ravishing of the island. I take a swim at Langkawi’s most popular beach and shopping strip, Pantai Cenang. It’s a democratic and amiable shore, like a polite Kuta of three decades ago, or Sanur in purdah. Malay Muslim women, and even little girls, sit in the shallows, shrouded in billowing chadors — not ideal for swimming or not-drowning — while other women stroll by in bikinis. The water is clean. There are kids and kites and selfie sticks galore but only a few pesky jetskis. I decide to climb a jungle mountain, but the easy way. The island's oldest geological formation, Gunung Matchincang, is said to be the first part of Southeast Asia to have emerged from the sea, some 500 million years ago. I join the terrific Panorama Cable Car for its trip to the 700-metre summit. Our gondola angles aloft high above the dense rainforest canopy. From the peak we can see much of the island and, just a few kilometres north, the misty shapes of Thailand’s Koh Tarutao-Adang archipelago. It’s time to head back to The Datai resort where I’m staying. En route I check out its adjacent Els Club golf course. Despite the colour of their glorious fairways, golf courses are far from “green”

Marine Conservation In Pattaya – What’s Going On Under Our Ocean? Many of us take to the beach for swimming, boat trips, and water activities but have probably never realised that under the ocean here in Pattaya some very serious marine conservation work is taking place. The organisation behind this conservation work is Dive Tribe a small group based in Pattaya working with Universities and International researchers. Dive Tribe has been involved in reef conservation for over 6 years. Their work takes them all over Thailand but the majority is based in Pattaya. Dive Tribe has been involved in reef conservation for over 6 years. Their work takes them all over Thailand but the majority is based in Pattaya. Their research projects include the largest shark tagging and release program in South East Asia. This has allowed the team to monitor the number of sharks on the reef, look at their health and reintroduce a species (Brown Banded Bamboo Sharks) back to the reefs which have been heavily fished. In 2014 DT had a student from Tasmania University over to help with the research and a very important scientific paper was produced. The end result was very well received by those with an interest in benthic sharks. Dive Tribe also conduct an in-depth survey technique that any diver can learn called the Ecological Monitoring Program. This survey looks at specific corals, reef health, invertebrates and fish life on the reef. The survey targets a set of indicator species that should be found on the reef by a simple process and over time Dive Tribe can learn if numbers of species are on the incline or decline.

Why is this important? Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea and are some of the most bio-diverse, productive ecosystems on earth. Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea and are some of the most bio-diverse, productive ecosystems on earth. They occupy only 2% of the ocean, yet are home to a quarter of all marine species: crustaceans, reptiles, seaweeds, bacteria and fungi. Over 4000 species of fish make their home in coral reefs. They also have an annual global economic value of $375 billion. Coral reefs provide food and resources for over 500 million people in 94 countries and territories. Dive Tribe have been protecting coral reefs in Pattaya with an eco friendly mooring system, which allows boats to moor near the reefs but stops them dropping their anchor and thus destroying years of coral growth that we may never be able to replace or grow back. This mooring project is important to protect the existing coral reefs in Pattaya and we would like to hear from any companies that realise the importance of our marine eco system and would like to get behind a project that protects coral reefs. Companies that would like to learn more and sponsor their own reef please get in touch.

Dive Tribe are also building artificial reefs and coral nurseries in the Pattaya area. These nurseries are built to help to grow corals and then they replant onto the natural reefs that have been damaged. Divers are more than welcome to join this project with Dive Tribe and we actively encourage other to come and learn to dive with us and get involved in these rewarding projects.

Divers are more than welcome to join this project with Dive Tribe and we actively encourage other to come and learn to dive with us and get involved in these rewarding projects. Now did you know that Pattaya is a hotspot for seahorses? Dr Lynn Loh and a small team conducted surveys throughout 2013 at 53 sites along Thailand’s coastline and believe it or not, Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Pai, were found to have the highest number of seahorses, with as many as 22 seahorses spotted in 2 dives at Koh Larn. Dive Tribe are now working with Dr Lynn Loh from SHEDD Aquarium and a graduate student from Kasersart University studying the populations of seahorses in Pattaya for the next year.

The species found in Pattaya is called the Hedgehog Seahorse The species found in Pattaya is called the Hedgehog Seahorse and is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. This species is caught and dried and used for the Chinese medicine trade. Sadly Thailand is the top exporter of seahorses and we do risk losing these wonderful creatures if we don’t start implementing protection. This is where you and Dive Tribe come in, seahorses are a popular tourist attraction for divers and photographers. We are working with the Tourist Authority of Thailand and Marine Dept to start lobbying for their protection in Pattaya. Dive Tribe is now able to certify you as a PADI seahorse specialist and guarantee to find seahorses on your dives with us. In March 2015 Jeff Corwin from the TV show Ocean Mysteries dived with Dive Tribe and the seahorses and filmed a TV special here in Pattaya to aired later in 2015. If you have seahorse sighting you can log them at www.iseahorse.org. If you would like to learn more about marine conservation and dive with the Tribe, then drop in on their website www.divetribe.org or leave Gwyn, Dive Tribes CEO a message at gmills@thedivetribe.com

PATTAYA PARK NIGHT PLAZA

he Pattaya Park Area in Pratumnak (off Soi 6) has for some time been associated with Russian tourists visiting Pattaya. Many arrive on package tours, ferried in by coaches - the same coaches we locals love to curse for causing traffic congestion, blocking our roads and junctions. So, with the dramatic drop in the number of Russian tourists, caused by the demise of the ruble at the beginning of the year – what future for areas such as these? After all the surrounding shops and restaurants have, over the last few years been so inundated with patrons from Russia and the Ukraine, they have dropped English from many of their signs, concentrating on Thai and Russian only. Certainly there has been a steady increase in the value of the ruble since the beginning of the year with the country’s Finance Minister Anton Siluanov , claiming that it has now become a “strong currency”. All too late for Pattaya’s last high season but hopefully restoring some confidence for the next. In the meantime there is a tremendous opportunity to look over some of the previous Russian “hot spots” such as the Pattaya Park Night Plaza. Located at the entrance to Pattaya park it can also be reached via the entrance half way down Pratumknak soi 6. Far more spacious and well thought out than Pattaya’s other markets there is plenty to discover here for all nationalities. A large car park at the rear offers free car parking and the paved floor with uniform stalls and good lighting make this a much more pleasant experience than some of the dirty, dustier markets to walk around . Divided into two parts, the first side has food stalls selling: seafood, Thai food and European dishes including Pizzas and delicious marinated kebabs all at excellent prices from 40 to 100 baht per dish. Some visitors opt for take away but many stalls have chairs and table for their customers and the centre of the market is given over to a large well lit seating area with a DJ playing music – and is an excellent position for “people watching”! The accompanying drinks are also extremely good value with beer sold from 50 baht (small bottle) to 70 baht for the larger size or for around 30 baht you can pick up a really excellent Smoothie, either with a single fruit such as Mango and Pineapple or intriguing

cocktails of different varieties – refreshingly cold and offered with an inventive individual bag for ease of carrying. Just remember to say “no sweet” if you prefer yours without the sickly syrup added at the end of the blending. Or, if you are feeling particularly healthy there are many fruit stalls to choose from with well laid out and attractively presented fruits of all varieties. The quantity of these stalls can be credited to the Russian tourists’ love of buying fruits and juices for their children – as many of the tourists that visit here come as families – the children loving the chance to dance up on the stage with the DJ. On the other side of the market there are many stalls selling clothing, swimwear, toys and Thai handicrafts. These are pretty standard tourist souvenirs but again all very reasonably priced. The bargain prices combined with the relaxed atmosphere make Pattaya Park Night Plaza a great place to visit. Open 7 days a week with many stalls starting from the early afternoon there’s plenty of time to drop in and have a look!

a y a t t Pa BARGAIN HUNTER GOES GREEN………………………………………………… Welcome to Pattaya Bargain Hunter, my name is Belinda and before living in Pattaya I was a buyer in London’s West End. An important part of my job was to look out for items of quality, value and with that certain special something. Now I look out for bargains in and around Pattaya to share with you. So this month to fit in with The Trader’s Green theme I’ve had a think about the ways to be more “Eco Friendly” while saving money.

RECYCLING CLOTHES One of the ways is by recycling clothes and thus increasing their longevity and overall usefulness. Remember one person's “2nd” hand is another person's “Vintage”.

One person’s “2nd hand” is another person’s “Vintage” There are no real Charity shops here in Thailand but it is possible to find 2nd hand clothes stalls around town. Markets like Thepprasit have them and in Big C Extra, Pattaya Klang you can find rails crammed full on the ground floor. There are however, problems buying 2nd hand clothes here in Thailand, namely fabric and fit. Real bargains can be found but not without time and patience. The first thing you need to do is choose by touch – nasty nylon materials will not feel comfortable especially here in the heat and if you are unable to try on your purchase, remember how small the average size is (no one wants to walk around “like a badly done up parcel”). Take a tape measure and ladies wear a loose skirt if looking for shorts or jeans as you just might be able to try these on whilst preserving your modesty ! Another way is to give to charity in touch with Alison (check Jess) and Eva Another way if you’re having a clear out and have clothes – mens, womens and especially children’s that you can donate is to give them to one of the charitable institutions around town. Drop a bag off at The Father Ray Foundation (on Sukhumvit road) The Sanuk Centre (off 2nd Road Jomtien) or Take Care Kids (also on the Sukhumvit Road – opposite King Power) They will all find a good use for your unwanted garments.

COLLINGBOURNE AUCTIONS For larger items such as cars, bikes, electrical goods and all manner of household items clearing them at Collingbourne Auctions is a great idea and makes for a fun Saturday morning. John is a professional auctioneer complete with hammer and lively patter. You can also treat yourself to a delicious sausage roll or bacon butty whilst there. As well as putting some extra baht in your wallet it is a way of ensuring your or no longer needed items are used and re-used rather than being consigned to the rubbish heaps.

A much used phrase, usually to describe people jetting all over the world, we can all help in our own small ways. Check that lights are not left on in rooms once vacated and horror of horrors air conditioning units turned off. After all, these are the worst offenders as regards notching up the baht in you electricity bill – often accounting for around 70% of an average household's electricty bill. So switching these off when not needed is not only green but will save you money. If you are lucky enough to have both a car and a motorbike, consider when a bike is better – for a short run, when traffic is bad. Or even better swop your motor bike for a push bike which will save on petrol and really help you lose weight and keep fit. Think of when you can ride instead of drive or walk instead of ride. All of us walk far too little and we should try. Good for you good for your wallet and Good for the planet ! If you have any thoughts, suggestions or comments please write to me “Belinda Bargain Hunter” at:pattayabargainhunter@outlook.com

Pattaya International Ladies Club Pattaya International Ladies Club welcomes ladies from all over the world who share a common goal: “a wish to create a social network with lots of friendly faces.” In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function.

In fact “lots of friendly faces” will be there to greet you whenever you attend a PILC function. Their aim is to make all new guests feel welcome and they will try to pair you with someone from your own country or someone with similar interests as yourself, especially if English is not your first language. The Pattaya International Ladies Club was established in 1987 with a small group of 30 women and has now increased to a present-day membership of over 200 women of all ages, from 34 countries, and all walks of life. With the growth of PILC has come the opportunity to offer a wide range of activities and social events, and the ability to raise funds for charitable causes. Currently members participate in golf, tennis, a book group, mahjong, bowling, badminton, bridge and many more activities as well as assisting many local charitable organizations. Moving to a new part of the world is never easy, especially when moving to unfamiliar surroundings away from family and friends. Some women who previously had busy working and social lives can suddenly find themselves with lots of spare time on their hands. The lunch and coffee mornings are friendly social events with guest speakers or themes and information on upcoming events and activities. The club’s last coffee morning took place at Linda’s restaurant. Over 40 ladies attended to catch-up with old friends, meet new ones and enjoy the wonderful finger-food on offer. Helle Rantsen, PILC President, made a ‘heroic’ welcome speech. After all, she had arrived at the function directly from Denmark; ‘suitcases and all’ and Joyce Aldridge conducted the raffle where a sum of 3,600 baht was raised.

This Month’s PILC coffee morning will be on Tuesday 16th at the New Nordic restaurant and every month there is a new members coffee morning where you can go to find out more about the PILC:

SCHOOL & EDUCATION

Teaching English - Tales from the Classroom

This month we look at some anecdotes from teachers. “During a discussion on pastimes, I asked my co-teacher to bring in some of her interests, and she produced Bad Boys II and a Bruce Willis flick. Things were going well, and I tried a few questions out on the class ‘What does Miss Far do in her spare time?’ ‘She does Bad Boys’, one student said, innocently. I frowned at him but figured no-one else got it so rapidly moved on.” Choosing the right material is always important. That didn’t quite happen during one reading exercise my co-teacher had produced: She gave out a worksheet about Pattaya, famed for its bar girls and exotic/erotic nightlife. The sheet boldly informed the 13-year-olds: ‘You will find a profusion of clubs and cabarets which cater to every taste and persuasion, and Pattaya’s famously charming hostesses will delight all your senses.’ I bet they couldn’t wait for the field trip. Still, it wasn’t as bad as the teacher who got sacked from an all-girls Catholic school for doing a lesson on the merits of birth control. Activities can take precedence over lessons, especially when the school is asking parents to pay for a show their children are performing in. Academic camps are also a big deal, although they don’t tend to be academic and there usually isn’t any actual camping involved. I was measured up for a special T-shirt (which didn’t arrive in time), and asked to come up with a game for the students to keep them amused for an hour. “My plan was for students to bring in a local English-language newspaper, pick out 20 words and then translate them. If there was time, they were to then use the words in a new sentence. In the afternoon one group was lagging and had done very little for the first 20 minutes. As soon as I went over to check on them it became obvious why.

www.pattayatrader.com

They had brought along a copy of the German version of the local newspaper. Even when I patiently explained their mistake a couple of them carried on searching for words they didn’t know – which amounted to all of them – before I removed the paper and added the word ‘muppet’ to their vocabulary. During a visit to a school for some speaking tests, I was led up a flight of stairs to the classrooms. At the top of the stairs a large, beautifully-design mural had been stuck to the wall. And in giant, cut-out letters the word ‘cock’ was staring at me. I looked again and saw that alongside other signs said: ‘badgers’, ‘elephants’, ‘foxes’. The Irish teacher leading the way nodded apologetically and said ‘I know, we told them, we told them…’ Teaching English: How to Teach English as a Second Language (ESL)” is written by award-winning writer Mark Beales. very now and then it’s probably not a bad idea to do your stomach (and your body) a favor by putting something inside it that wasn’t handed to you in a grease stained bag at the neighborhood golden arches … or delivered to your doorstep in thirty minutes or less by the speediest pizza delivery service … or by scarfing down handful after handful of that orangy, crispy cheesy snack that’s a must while watching the big game that you found in a jumbo sized cellophane sack at the local convenience store … or … okay, okay! I think you get the picture. If you really want to do your bit to make our planet a better and greener place to live, why not start with your very own body, i.e. take better care of it. It’s one thing to recycle, to conserve water, and to save energy in every manner possible. But think about all of the harmful carbon emissions that will be released into the atmosphere each time you’re hooked up to a dialysis machine because you’ve blown your kidneys from years of alcohol abuse. And what about all of the toxins released by the carbon or fossil based fuels that must be burned whilst you’re undergoing the weekly bout of radiation therapy to mitigate the tumor residing in your colon that is the result of ingesting too many handfuls of that artificially colored and flavored cheese snacks since you were six years old. If you must eat colorful foods forget about orange Cheetos Cheese Puffs, Amber Ales, Green Gummy Bears, and Red Fanta, instead think about the healthy hues that comprise the colors of fresh vegetables. If you just can’t envision yourself munching on a carrot stick like Bugs Bunny, there’s a local delicacy that once you’ve gotten past the fact that it’s composed almost entirely of farm fresh vegetables, you’ll find that it’s totally tasty. The Thais call it Pàt Phạk Ruam Mit, which literally means “fried vegetables all mixed up”, but you can just call it Fried Mixed Vegetables. Like so many other Thai dishes fried or otherwise, vegetables all mixed up likely originated closer to the border of China than Siam. But vegetable being a global victual to which no one

www.pattayatrader.com

nation can claim ownership, there’s really no way to know for sure if the idea of mixing up veggies was homegrown or imported from elsewhere or merely an accident. Nevertheless, ordering up a plate of Pàt Phạk Ruam Mit is a wise choice because it’s low in both cost and calories. It’s fresh, flavorful, and flexible as the veggies are purchased daily and it can be tailored to each eater’s pallet in regard to its vegetable content, and in respect to a source of protein if one’s desired. It can be served as a side dish along with a main of your choice or it can be the centerpiece of your mid-day or evening repast. Plus, it’s way more healthy than devouring that the triple decker ‘Cardiac Arrest Burger’ with extra bacon and cheese you’ve been craving. You may even find that it’s as flavorful as the aforementioned burger, if not more so. In general, most street vendors don’t have a fixed recipe for fried mixed vegetables. However, they do seem to have a few fixed rules by which they abide. For example, the dish is always comprised of whatever fresh vegetable that particular vendor has on hand at any given moment. The most common being: cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, snow peas, green onions, baby corn, bak choy, carrots, white onions, mushrooms, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and even asparagus. The dish is always quickly flash fried in a hot wok along with fresh garlic, crushed red chilies, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. It’s also always served on a bed of steamed white jasmine rice. In terms of versatility, you do have some say in which veggies are or are not incorporated into your stir fry. You also have the option of adding a protein in the form of chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, and squid, or tofu if it happens to be meatless Monday or if you’re going vegan for the day or forever. If you are a died in the wool vegan be sure to substitute soy sauce for fish sauce so as not to taint your feast with an unwanted animal byproduct. In addition Pàt Phạk Ruam Mit can be enhanced with a sprinkling of black pepper, a squeeze of fresh lime juice or by topping the whole with a fried egg by uttering the Thai words “kai dow”, which means fried egg, when you place your order. No matter how you order fried mixed vegetables it always turns out great.

medical mission in Chonburi.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

‘Operation Smile’ This month, rather than concentrate on personal health issues, the Trader looks at a medical mission that recently took place in Chonburi helping unfortunate children from all over Thailand who suffer from the condition known as cleft lip or cleft palate. One in every five hundred babies born in Thailand suffer from cleft palate a condition that can lead to malnutrition, medical and psychological problems. Operation Smile conducted its first missions in Thailand in 1997. one in Bangkok at the King Mongkut Hospital, and the other at the regional hospital in Yasothorn province. An international team of medical volunteers carried out 172 free surgeries for Thai children suffering from cleft lips and/or cleft palates.

The following report is from a student of St Andrews School, Green Valley who attended the mission as part of her International baccalaureate Diploma. The CAS hours she refers to stands for Creativity, Action, Service where students are encouraged to participate in such helpful activities as part of their course: ‘Community Action Service’ is an integral and very important part of the IB diploma programme at St. Andrews International School. In order to meet the requirements of ‘CAS’ we are required to complete a certain number Learning Objectives where we spend time in the community helping out those more fortunate than ourselves. Therefore, on May 6th - 10th we volunteered to go to Chonburi to help out with the charity ‘Operation Smile.’ At first our aim was to complete as many CAS Objectives as possible, but by the end of this end of the trip, it became much more than that. It became a life changing experience for all involved, a chance to make a difference to children and parents whose lives are often unbearably difficult. I arrived not knowing much about the charity, ‘Operation Smile.’ However, I soon discovered that approximately one in every five hundred babies in Thailand is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. These cases are far more common in rural Thailand than urban areas and without ‘Operation Smile’ it is almost impossible for these children to receive the operations they desperately need. The Children that don’t receive these operations can suffer from malnutrition, medical and psychological problems. In the few days that I spent at the hospital in Chonburi many of these children received their operation and had the chance to lead a normal life. It was quite traumatizing to see the operations live and then see many of the parents cry afterwards because their child was in so

| HEALTH & WELLNESS much pain. This was extremely hard for me, as I’ve never witnessed anything like this in person and it’s made me realize just how privileged I am. It’s not the kind of realization when you see things on television and are bombarded with images of the less fortunate. It’s a different kind of realization; the kind that hits you really hard and makes you really want to help. I spent a few days getting to know the parents and their beautiful children who came from all areas of Thailand and realized that don’t have much money or many possessions, but what they do have is hope. Hope that their children will get better and to be around that hope and love was a very humbling experience. The charity, ‘Operation Smile’ does an amazing job to bring together volunteer surgeons and medical teams, along with average people like us who raise money so that these children can have these life changing operations. Without charities like ‘Operation Smile’ and the generous people who donate money and time these children and their families would continue to suffer. I was very privileged to be part of this medical mission and am dedicated to continuing to help out those less fortunate than myself. Not because I have a certain number of CAS hours to complete, but because I know I can make a difference, no matter how small. Lisa Peake (Year 12, St. Andrews International School, Green Valley)

When it comes to watching sporting events in Pattaya there are literally thousands of places to choose from.

SPORT & LEISURE

Six of The Best Places to Watch Sporting Events in Pattaya

You don't have to go far in Pattaya to watch sport, almost every beer bar has a large screen TV; however, these are not without their distractions! If you are into your sports and want to avoid the full-on treatment that many bars provide then a sports type bar can be a great option. Most of these will have some kind of restaurant attached, which means not only can you enjoy your favorite team, you can get fed and watered at the same time. Here's a rundown of some of the best ones in Pattaya:

Aside from the pool area there is also a professional Darts area which has been specially designed to host local and national events.

Frasers Located in Thappraya Road, Jomtien, Frasers has gained a reputation as one of the areas leading sports venues. If you enjoy your sports then a trip down here shouldn't be missed. Coverage means that pretty much anything from Rugby League through to F1 is covered in style. One of the more recent venues, Frasers was opened just over 12 months ago and has a special play area for the kids. A decent varied menu is on offer to keep everyone content, alongside some of the coldest beers in Jomtien. If you haven't been down, now's a perfect time to take a look.

Lion Pub Since its renovation the Lion Pub has gone all out to claim the title of best sports bar in Pattaya. No less than 20 screens are available to discerning sports fans. No matter what you want to see, they have it covered. If you like your sports big then their new 84” “monster screen” should do the trick. In addition to this the Lion has four 65” whoppers just in case the largest screen isn't showing your sport! Serving European and Thai food, the kitchen is worthy of a mention. Value and quality are both delivered in equal portions by the polite and attentive staff.

Legends Pool and Sports Bar Another great venue for watching all manner of sporting events comes in the form of the Legends Pool and Sports Bar, on Pattaya Klang. Featuring no less than 17 50” Plasma screens, just about every event imaginable is covered during their opening times of 11am – 3am.

Sportsman Pub and Restaurant

In addition to watching the sport of your choice there is also a number of Brunswick Pro 9ft Pool Tables. Whether you are a seasoned professional or just looking to play a few games with your pals, everyone is welcome at Legends.

Conveniently located off Second Road, the Sportsman should

| SPORT & LEISURE be easy enough to find. Parking for cars isn't great; however, the Major Cinema complex is within easy access and only a short walk away. Top quality food from an extensive menu is available 7 days per week. If your team are playing on a Sunday then why not take advantage of the fantastic carvery, top value is guaranteed here. Offering a handful of screens to take in anything from F1, Rugby, Tennis, Boxing and of course the English Premier League.

Irish Rovers Situated in the LK Metro complex area, Irish Rovers has a great reputation for providing top class sports coverage. Again, similar to the others mentioned here, there are several large screens which show different events. There is pretty much guaranteed to be something on for everyone with a visit to Irish Rovers. If food plays apart in your sporting coverage (and why not!) then Irish Rovers do a fantastic breakfast that you will be hard pushed to beat for taste and price.

Witherspoons Pub and Restaurant Another great venue for sports is the Witherspoons Pub and Restaurant, located on Soi Baukhao. Their website will keep you updated on each days events, showing sports such as Gold, Rugby, Football, Tennis and Hockey. American sports fans are not left out with a smattering of Baseball and American Football thrown in for good measure. As you might expect, there is a good choice of food and drink available at Witherspoons. A decent mix of well priced Thai, European and American dishes are on the menu. No matter what sports you are into, Pattaya always has somewhere you can see them, Of course, depending on the environment you are looking for will determine what you get. For sports lovers who aren't looking for a “girly type bar then the six bars mentioned above should provide more than enough choice.

i Folks, I went out to Koh Man Wichia with the memory that in the last six trips I have had only two bites and no big fish. I had with me six frozen small squid and cut squid for bottom fishing for live bait. I put out two float rigs, one thirty metres out the other twenty metres . I put the float stopper’s at a depth of twenty metres down. Then I put out the two bottom rigs down, one weight fifty grams and the other about ten grams. I knew that the tide would be slack so that bait fish would be available, sure enough up came small red sand fish (bpla si deang) about the size of my finger, perfect bait. When I had six live bait I reeled in all the rods and replaced the dead squid bait. The tide had just started to pick up when a float rod bent over and line shot off the reel. I left the drag do it’s work and started to reel in the other float rod. When the line slowed down I stopped and picked up the rod and the fish powered up and stripped line again. I let

him take line and furiously brought in the other float rod. I left the two bottom rigs out. When the fish jumped I knew it was a queen fish (bpla sala) then he came up tide and past the boat. A heart stopping moment as he got close to the anchor rope and went to the other side of the boat. I had to thread the rod underneath the rope at front of the boat. Thirty five minutes later I had a five kilo fish, a great start. I put the two floats out again, letting the tide and wind take them away from the boat, stopping one at twenty metres and letting the other run out. I went to pick up my bait rod when I saw reel whipping off the float rod. A fish had hit it on the line out. I slowed down the line to get a hook set and the fish kept running. I got the other float rod in as the fish took over a hundred metres of line. This was a big fish and in the next twenty minutes he had not jumped but stayed down. A big Spanish mackerel I was thinking. He went everywhere, left side of the back of the boat, right side, then he went uptide and twice I had to thread the rod under the anchor rope. Finally after forty minutes I got him to the side of the boat all played out, just the five foot trace left in the water, I saw a big queen fish on his side. With the rod held high in one

www.pattayatrader.com

hand I reached for the net. And he was off, the hook finally ripped through, swearing and stomping my foot I knew that the fish was as good as dead and might as well be in the boat. I put out the floats again and before I had a chance to drink some water the bottom rig rod bent over. This one took thirty five minutes of jumping, powerful dives and the rod bent over to it’s maxium. Then when it was five metres under the boat and almost played out the wire broke, more swearing and foot stomping, two big fish lost, back to back. Not five minutes later the fishing gods gave me consolation gift when a four kilo queen after thirty minutes fight finally came to the net. I have to say I was worried all the time and that fish settled my nerves. I was starting to think I was jinxed! Just before I left a two kilo queen completed a wonderful day out, eleven kilos of fish in the boat and as much lost! The usual, if you want any info on tackle shops, want to share your catch of the day photo’s, what you are catching or not. You can email me on plamafia5 @aol.com or sms 0808356945. Have Fun, Roger

Is there Such a Thing as Life After EPL?

N

ow that the UK football season is officially over, it can seem like an awfully long time before the new (2015-16) season gets underway. Especially when there are no major international tournaments to get your football fix from.

We have seen Chelsea canter to a 4th league title, Arsenal (most likely) win the FA Cup, play off finals from three divisions and now there’s nothing. For the football fan, these next eight / nine weeks can be a difficult time to handle. Aside from the usual mix of high-profile transfers that get almost milked to death and never quite seem to come off, there isn’t much in the way of live action for the next couple of months, or is there? Well before grown men cry, you might like to know that the Premier League will make an early start this coming season – supposedly to help with England’s Euro campaign at the end of the new season. Time will tell…..

It’s Coming, it Really Is! So, Saturday 8th August should be firmly planted in your mind and calendar, as this represents the return of all things beautiful, minus QPR, Burnley and most likely Sunderland (at time of writing!) But, with welcome additions in the form of Bournemouth, Watford and either Norwich or Middlesbrough. There will be re-runs galore shown on CTH during the “off season”. So, if you fancy watching how it all unfolds then this really shouldn’t be an issue. Here is the low-down on the football going on over the next couple of months. International footie is back early in June with a number of (decent looking) friendly fixtures due to take place. The games of choice will most likely be either Rep of Ireland vs England on Sunday June 7th or Italy vs Portugal a week or so later on the 16th. Other tasty looking fixtures include: • Brazil v Mexico – 7th June • Norway v Sweden – 8th June • Germany v USA – 10th June Thai TV has a knack of covering some of these games, so it’s highly likely that you will be able to catch up on the action in the comfort of your own living room.

52 52

PATTAYA TRADER

Chasing the French Dream Once the friendly games are out of the way then it’s down to the main business – qualification for Euro 2016. With all Four home nations plus the Republic in with a shout, a great week or so of footie is on the cards. Key dates include: • Wales v Belgium – 12th June • Rep of Ireland v Scotland – 13th June • Northern Ireland v Romania – 13th June • Slovenia v England – 14th June Once this round of matches are concluded, Euro qualification takes a break and won’t be back until early Sept. Thankfully, the EPL is under full swing again by then – oh happy days! Highlights from this batch include: • Cyprus v Wales – 3rd Sept • San Marino v England – 5th Sept • Northern Ireland v Hungry – 7th Sept • Rep of Ireland v Georgia – 7th Sept • Scotland v Germany – 7th Sept • England v Switzerland – 8th Sept

Issue 176 | JUNE 2015

SPORT & LEISURE

October brings the Euro Qualification to a close, well at least for 2015. Home nations games are scheduled as follows:

Watch it Live in Thailand

• Northern Ireland v Greece – 8th Oct • Rep of Ireland v Germany – 8th Oct • Scotland v Poland – 8th Oct • England v Estonia – 9th Oct • Bosnia-Herzegovina v Wales – 10th Oct • Gibraltar v Scotland – 11th Oct • Finland v Northern Ireland – 11th Oct • Poland v Rep of Ireland – 11th Oct • Lithuania v England – 12th Oct • Wales v Andorra – 13th Oct At time of printing all of the home nations teams are really well placed, whether that remains the same after these important fixtures are any-ones guess!

For those looking for a live game then why not consider heading over to the see Pattaya United FC in action. If you haven’t been to a local Thai match, then now is as good a time as any, the crowd’s aren’t the largest, but that doesn’t stop them from bringing their own version of “Samba” to the football scene.

A revised format will see 24 teams take place instead of the usual 16, this might just be enough to see the likes of Scotland, Rep of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland head over to France when it all kicks off in June next year.

Of course, you could also (subject to availability) catch up with your own favourite teams in Bangkok. Premier League winners Chelsea have already confirmed their game against the Thailand All Stars on the 30th May. Games from some of the EPL top sides are expected to follow with Liverpool and Tottenham amongst

Another great live football opportunity comes in the shape of Chonburi FC otherwise known as Chonburi Sharks. At present they are in a mid-table position in the Thai Premier League, looking like Buriram will be the ones to beat once more. Thankfully the ticket prices for either Yamaha League One or Thai Premier League won’t break the bank and you’ll probably get to see a great game too.

others set for some pre-season games in the Thai sunshine. So for those of you that struggle during the close season, there is no need to panic. The Pattaya Trader will keep you abreast of the upcoming action.

s l e e h W g n i Talk NEW RACING SEASON KICKS OFF IN REAL STYLE

T

hailand Super Series got underway last month at the new-world class Chang International Circuit in Buriram with a spectacular weekend. With full grids, top drivers in state of the art race cars and intense action all the way through the programme Thai racing took another step forward and really seems to be entering into a new ‘golden era’.

However for Pattaya race fans the location emphasises the shift in Thai motorsport dynamics. No longer is it a fast 15 km hop up to Bira Circuit to see the action unfold, now they have to travel more than 400 km to Buriram – but many did, and they saw a weekend of thrills and spills, as well as many Pattaya drivers on the podiums, that made the long journey worthwhile. In the big headlining categories, Super Car Class 1-GT3 and Super Car Class 2-GTM, there were four different winners from the four races (2 for each category), all of which enjoyed highly competitive action throughout the running order. Saturday’s first race saw the reigning top class champion Chonsawat Asavahame get his title defence off to an inch-perfect start in the sleek Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 Extenso R-EX. This is a brand new ultrawidebodied version of the Italian racing machine and it actually only landed in Thailand the week before the event. With the biggest team in the paddock Chonsawat clearly is pulling out all the stops to ensure he keeps the crown in his grasp. On the other side of the garage his teammate, Czech superstar Tomáš Enge in the big and brutal Camaro GT3, chased him home and with a second Gallardo GT3 driven by Umar A. Rahman bagging third place that meant a clean sweep for Reiter Vattana Motorsport.

Meanwhile in Class 2-GTM, there was a fairytale start for Pattaya’s (and Thailand’s) ‘boy wonder’, Kantasak Kusiri, as he delivered his first victory for Singha Motorsport Team Thailand on his first race with the team. Last year the youngster graduated to Super Car, but it was a very difficult year as he was driving a Porsche that wasn’t at the top of its game. This year he’s been drafted into the team that won the 2014 title so all the ingredients are in place for him to shine – and Kantasak promptly set about seizing the opportunity. However it was all change on Sunday as during the second and final race in Class 1-GT3 the biggest beast in the TSS paddock, the moody black Camaro, abruptly turned the tables around on the slippery Lamborghini. Tomáš powered his way to victory in style. And he’s now hitting top form, as that made it three wins out of the last four Super Car races for the former F1 driver.

It was the same story in Class 2-GTM where New Zealander Craig Corliss was simply unstoppable in the lurid-green Holden Commodore VE; the menacing ‘V8 Supercar’ machine had travelled from Triple Eight Engineering in Australia, following its extensive close-season rebuild, coming directly to Buriram, where it was only unloaded from its shipping container the day before practice began. The car went straight to the winners’ circle giving the Holden brand name its first ever win in Thailand. A perfect drive from the New Zealander also handed him his first trip to the top step of the podium for quite a few seasons. With 31 cars on the grid for the first race of the season and the race action enthralling that all bodes well for Pattaya fans when Thailand Super Series rocks into Bira Circuit in mid-September for its traditional autumn calendar date.

Sailboat Review: Hylas 63 If you ask any sailing enthusiast, why purchase a sailboat? The reply will likely sound something like this: Whether you’re talking about an hour, a weekend, a vacation or an entire lifetime, you will find very few activities to do in this lifetime that are as graceful, peaceful, exhilarating, challenging, or as enjoyable as sailing your very own boat. All emotion aside, there is much to be said about serenely sailing the seven seas on your very own vessel, with your best mates, that special someone or as a family unit. Master of your own destiny, etc etc… sailing is one of the few pastimes where one can truly escape the chaotic ebb and flow of urban life. Even if you reside in a seaside paradise such as Pattaya; let’s face it, the landward side of this city relentlessly teems with traffic, Thais and tourists at all hours. Conversely, Pattaya’s seaside and surrounding islands have no shortage of cozy coves, isolated island anchorages and secluded waterways in which to explore. With a sailboat at your beck and call, you’ll have a private island that doubles as a water borne conveyance, a drifting domicile, a floating restaurant, and a vehicle on which you can escape, fish or experience the thrill of heavy weather or sailboat racing. And, if you decide that you actually want to partake in what the hustle and bustle of crowded city life has to offer – that private island can safely see you there as well.

The Hylas 63

In respect to quality bluewater boats, the Hylas brand is a name that, year in and year out, has been synonymous with solid construction, dependable engineering, seaworthy design, and attention to detail. At 63 feet in length and nearly 18 feet in beam, Hylase’s latest offering is the powerful and handsome Hylas 63, the “ultimate performance cruiser” and Cruising World magazine’s boat of the year.

Hull

The hand laid hull is comprised of alternate layers of Twaron, a fiber that is two and a half time stronger than steel, and high-strength e-glass, a type of fiberglass bound together by vinlyester resin. The laminate hull is then vacuum-bagged in a high fiber to resin ratio of fiberglass for additional strength, and two coats of epoxy are applied below the waterline to retard osmotic blistering. All of the watertight bulkheads are glassed to both the hull and the deck. In the bow, the collision bulkhead behind the spacious sail and anchor lockers divides that area from the interior. Likewise, the aft collision bulkhead, similarly partitions the port and starboard lazarettes and dingy garage, which also has plenty of room for scuba equipment, from the accommodations.

Decks

Like most center cockpit designs the Hylas 63 features a spacious aft deck and a wide foredeck on which guests can bask in the tropical sun or simply enjoy the view. The wide side decks, connecting the fore to the aft deck, ensures ample room and are both fitted with hand and toe rails for added security. The expansive cabintop, just forward of the mast has also been provided with ample handholds to ease one’s passage when moving about. All of the above mentioned solid laminate decks are reinforced with a balsa core in the high traffic areas and are trimmed with deck moldings that are vacuum bagged, glued and through-bolted to the hull.

Sail & Mast

The 88 foot tall triple spreader, keel stepped mast accommodates a total of 2,077 square feet of sail area comprised of a mainsail, genoasail and staysail. All of which are set via hydraulic furlers. Halyard and sail control lines are handled by 10 strategically placed winches, 6 of which, those controlling the genoa, main, and stay sail winches are powered by 24 volt motors.

Cockpit

The Hylas 63 is unique in respect to other sailboats as the design of its long and wide cockpit incorporates a layout which makes it both a working and a lounging cockpit. The aft section, which is adequately separated from the recreational space, features a pair of helms and state of the art control panels, as well as luxurious twin helm seats, both of which are well padded and therefore extremely comfortable. This fact, transforms the otherwise mundane task of keeping watch into an absolute a pleasure! The forward cockpit is fitted with bench seats on either side that are large enough, depending on your mood, for napping, lounging or sitting. A centerline table with a bench seat on both sides, and plenty of legroom bisects the forward cockpit area. A companionway connects the cockpit to the side decks, as well as the three stepped transom or aft deck on which a pair of roomy lazarettes are situated. For the readers who are not well versed in nautical nomenclature a lazarette is a storage locker.

Cabins & Heads

The stock layout of the Hylas 63 below decks, which can be customized, calls for four cabins and four heads. Essentially this is the nautical speak equivalent of four bedrooms and four bathrooms. In other words, it’s spacious enough to accommodate a family of four or more or an equal measure of crew and guests. The master stateroom, situated in the aft or rear of the boat, is generous in area, and features a centerline berth, i.e. bed, plus an ensuite toilet and shower. Slightly smaller in size, but equally luxurious, the VIP living quarters, also with its own ensuite shower and toilet are located further up in the bow. Both of these staterooms are replete with ample storage in the form of lockers, shelves and drawers. Sandwiched between the saloon and the VIP stateroom over on the port or left side, and just across the companionway from the VIP toilet, you’ll find the Pullman berth, which is about two-thirds the size of the VIP stateroom. Amidships over on the starboard or right hand side (when facing forward), is a modest toiletless berth whose over and under style ‘bunk bed’ will sleep two.

Saloon & Galley

The saloon on the Hylas 63 is best described as functional and welcoming. With 7 foot high ceilings and ample sunlight streaming in through the six wraparound transom windows and two skylights, this great room rivals the magnificence of any five star hotel. To the port side is an L-shaped settee capable of seating as many as eight individuals around its adjacent table. If additional seating is required, the saloon is fully equipped with two extra folding chairs. It’s also worth noting that this settee can be pressed into service as a sixth bed. Across from the settee, against the starboard bulkhead is a sofa, which at the time of purchase can be swapped for a pair of armchairs if desired. To the aft of the sofa is a navigation table facing an instrument display and switch panel that will bring a tear to the eye of your inner nerd. Interior details are comprised of a choice of cabinet styles, counter colors, and teak and more teak or teak and bamboo finishes, either with or without inlays. The galley on the Hylas 63 is more expansive than the average kitchen in most landlocked condos. There the ship’s cook will be delighted to find more than enough counter space, and enough storage and refrigeration to ensure that passengers and guests never miss a meal and are never bereft of a cold drink. In actuality, the galley conveniences include a two drawer refrigerator and a separate top and side loading freezer, a combination three burner LPG stove and oven, and twin sinks for washing up. A dishwasher, wine cooler, ice-maker, microwave, and even a washer/dryer are also available.

Systems & Auxiliary

Just like the amenities of the interior, the mechanical and electrical systems of the Hylas 63 have also received considerable attention. In all a total of 16 batteries are required to power the sailing and domestic electronics, LED lighting, VHF radio, winches, windlass, generator, bow and stern thrusters, as well as the boats auxiliary propulsion aperatus. Speaking of auxiliary propulsion, when the vessel is not under sail, said propulsion comes in the form of a 220hp Yanmar diesel engine with dual fuel filters, and a built in oil exchange pump for the generator and the transmission. This will ensure that wind or no wind, you will always be able to safely travel from port A to port B. The engine has been thoughtfully laid out in such a manner so that all of pumps, filters, and essential maintenance points are easily accessible. The 384 gallons of diesel fuel is divided amongst four tanks, all of which have been set low in the boat. To help ease the boat in and out of its berth, two Sidepower thrusters have been installed at both the bow and the stern.

Mazda Go Green Racing ‘Environmental responsibility’ is a much-bandied phrase these days and now it’s coming to Thai motorsport – in fact it’s actually here already. Thailand’s locally built breed of efficient ‘Eco Cars’ have recently found a new niche in racing by providing a low cost and evenly matched platform for beginner drivers. But the concept of ‘green racing’ doesn’t stop there and it’s taking the next step upwards. That’s because at the opening round of Thailand Super Series last month the new-generation Mazda2 made its track debut in the highly popular – and hotly competitive – ‘Super Production’ championship. That’s the routine bit though as it’s a B-segment car entering the biggest series in Thailand reserved for B-segment cars. The difference, however, is that the new Mazda 2 is diesel powered. In fact there hasn’t been a diesel engine car in the Super Production category before so there simply aren’t any rules to fit. So to accommodate the new car the organisers’ have handed the Mazda2 a special dispensation – it can run in the races, but it can’t score championship points this season. They plan run the rule over it and by next year, when yet more diesels are expected, it will have its place in Thai racing.

on the trot. Last year Innovation Motorsport ran the outgoing gasoline Mazda2 but with the Japanese brand’s switch to a new shape model with diesel power so the race team was forced to debut a new car. And with that new efficient diesel engine and Skyactiv technology comes a pure focus on ‘green racing’. “The challenge is to build and develop an environmentally friendly racecar but still with the capability to be competitive with the contemporary generation racing machines,” explains Michael Freeman, Team Owner and Test Driver. “Our starting point is the new Mazda 2 SkyActiv clean diesel and due the high sales of the vehicle in Thailand the only unit available to convert to racing was a unit that is to full Japanese specification, with Euro VI emission level,” he says. That in effect ties one hand behind their backs, well both hands really. “This specification includes a ‘Diesel Particulate Filter’, which is not a requirement in Thailand and after four

The ambitious project is the work of Innovation Motorsport, the team that runs the factory-supported Mazda race programme here. Based just up the road from Pattaya this outfit first brought the concept of ‘smoke free’ emissions to the pickup truck racing category a few years ago. Traditionalists laughed and said it wouldn’t work, Innovation Motorsport (an appropriate name) responded by throttling the life out of Super Pickup, the country’s top category reserved for racing trucks. This year the BT-50s have finally retired after winning both the teams’ and drivers’ championships for three years

days of practice and racing the exhaust pipe was still 100% clean,” he says. “We even retained the Mazda i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system and Mazda i-stop [idle stop] for the race.”

That mean on the grid as the roar of racing engines reached a crescendo the bright red Mazda was in full ‘eco mode’. “At the start of the race while all the other cars were revving away after the 30 second sign we sat silently saving fuel with i-stop,” he says with a laugh. It’s a quick start system too, as Mazda's i-stop needs just one engine cycle to fire due to its precise control of the piston positions. As a result, i-stop achieves the world's fastest diesel engine restart. But it certainly wasn’t designed with the racetrack in mind. Last year the team ran gasoline-powered Mazda2 racecars and they also brought one to this race, mainly to give their new signing, Tachapan Vijittranon, some competitive seat time. That also provided some interesting back-to-back comparisons. “Our previous generation gasoline powered Mazda2 finished on the podium in both races but in achieving the result used double the fuel and added 100% more emissions,” notes the Australian. It was a race against time to get the new car built and onto the track and now with the first race out of the way and the targets – reaching the checkered flag – comfortably achieved, there is now a two month window before the team returns to the track and the development curve will go up the gears.

“Next steps are to remove the automatic transmission and fit an even more fuel efficient manual transmission to bring us a step closer to running a low emission fuel efficient competitive race car,” adds Michael.

By B.S. • Don’t wander the sois in a state of inebriation as there’s a good chance you’ll be noticed by predators or other unsavory characters And most importantly, never let a stranger, whether it’s a beggar, drunk, prostitute or ladyboy come closer than arm’s length. If you value your valuables don’t be afraid to be rude, they certainly aren’t. It’s true, more people become the unwitting victims of crime because they are more afraid of being considered rude than getting robbed. Forget about what they or others think, push pushy strangers away if necessary, protect your cash with your hand, and keep on walking.

Baht Bus Bumping

Defeating Pick Pockets Thai’s in general, have a kindly disposition. But a city built on the back of tourist dollars Pattaya, just seems to attract more than its fair share of less that law abiding Thais. This fact makes petty theft in the form of purse and jewelry snatching and pick-pocketing uncommonly common in our neck of the woods. Hardly a week goes by without the local news airing a report about foreigners who’ve been fleeced by Siamese scoundrels whilst perambulating the city’s footpaths or plying its avenues in a baht bus. I’m well aware that Pattaya isn’t the setting of a Dickens’s novel, but it really does have an abundance of Asian ‘Artful Dodgers’. I know; as I’ve been the victim of Thai pickpockets of a dubious gender on Beach Road … twice! Okay, some alcohol was involved, but not excessively so. But I digress.

Common Scenarios The pretexts used by today’s Thai pickpockets differ very little from those employed in the days of Dickens. They still rely on skill, cunning, distraction, physical contact, and speed. Based on my own … ahem, personal experience and those viewed on the local news bulletins, the two most common pick-pocketing scams in our fair city take place on crowded thoroughfares and on the city’s ever present baht buses.

Beach Road Bumping By far the most common pick-pocketing scam in Pattaya is what the pros refer to as ‘bumping’. This technique works best in a crowded or busy location such as, but not limited to Pattaya Beach Road. Generally a stranger or two (one doing the bumping and the other doing the stealing) will ‘bump’ or otherwise unexpectedly come into contact with your person. The theft is cleverly disguised as an accident or some other form of commotion such as a prostitute or ladyboy showcasing the services on offer by caressing err, touching ah, I mean accosting, okay, it’s probably best described as molestation by prying hands! Generally the victim (me on two occasions) was so relieved to escape the unwanted and unsolicited attention that a mobile phone, wallet or in my case, a few hundred baht from my shirt pocket went missing. The best way to avoid this type of confrontation is to: Be alert in crowded spaces Never let anyone invade your personal space Steer clear of commotions as they are often a smokescreen for theft Go on instant alert when approached by a stranger • Be wary of anyone coming your way bearing maps or clipboards as these items can be used to distract your attention and hide their hands • Avoid dimly lit areas and locations where prostitutes and ladyboys are known to congregate

PATTAYA TRADER

In Pattaya the baht bus is the second most likely location where a tourist or expat can expect to be unexpectedly separated from his or her valuables by a team of pickpockets. I say “team”, because pick-pocketeers always operate in tandem and frequently in triplicate on the baht bus. Sometimes the offenders will position themselves in such a manner so that the one ahead can create a delay when boarding the bus. This of course, will force you to stop abruptly. Meanwhile, the second perpetrator behind you, can’t help but collide into you as if it’s your fault whilst removing your wallet. Another common ploy is that a passenger, often a female burdened by an infant, will sit unusually close to you. A second commuter will then occupy the other open seat adjacent to your person. Once you’ve been bookended, at some point during the journey, the infant bearer will attempt to distract you by jostling about and fussing with the toddler. While your attention is occupied by the pre-planned commotion, her partner in crime will stealthily filch your wallet or cash from your pocket. Often the ill gotten gains are discreetly handed off to a third member of the gang who instantly rings the bell and debarks from the bus. This ensures that no incriminating evidence remains in possession of the pair of perpetrators should you prematurely discover that your money’s missing when you can’t pay the fare. If your most earnest desire is to avoid a baht bus calamity such as those described above: • Always occupy a corner seat which will leave you vulnerable from only one side • Check to see that you are still in possession of your valuables when you sit down, and before you stand up to exit the bus • Guard your belongings whenever another passenger invades your personal space or creates an unusual amount of seemingly innocuous hubbub • Move to another seat if you are suddenly surrounded on a less than crowded bus

Prevention Remember that what happens to you in Pattaya should be the result of choice, not chance. Nobody goes out looking for trouble, but sometimes it just has a way of finding you. Therefore, before you go out, always do what you can to minimize your loss in case of theft: Dress inconspicuously so that you don’t attract attention of the wrong type Take only what you need and don’t flash big wads of cash or wear too much bling Avoid placing valuables in pockets that are outside your field of vision, i.e. rear and thigh pockets Deep front pockets offer far better protection Attach your wallet to a chain or ditch the billfold entirely. The only items of importance I carry in my billfold are a copy of my visa and passport. My folding money is always safely tucked away inside a front trouser pocket.

If You’ve Been Victimized Whether you’re walking or riding, as soon as you suspect thing’s are amiss, do something unexpected like suddenly standing up, reversing your direction, speeding up or slowing down your pace. This will throw the pickpockets off their game. If you catch a pickpocket in the act, shout out the Thai word “kà-moi”, which means “to steal”. Doing so will likely force the thief to panic and flee the scene of the crime empty handed. If all else fails, don’t struggle with the pickpocketeer as many are armed with knives. If you find that you’ve been fleeced, and are still in possession of your mobile snap a photo of the fleeing felon and contact the police immediately.

Love Takes a Chance

W

atching television these days, it appears you cannot escape the phenomenon of the 21st Century; the Reality Show. These are the shows that use real people instead of actors and film them in contrived or ordinary situations. One Reality Show that did catch my attention is called ‘Married at First Sight’. This show revolves around single men and women who never actually meet until their wedding day. Of course, the concept of an arranged marriage is not new and is still widely practiced in some Asian and Middle Eastern countries. This is not to be confused with forced marriages which involve the luckless couple having no choice in the matter. In an arranged marriage, each of the couple is free to opt out before the wedding, even though there may be massive family and social pressure not to. Indeed, here in the technologically advanced West, couples are meeting through dating websites or on Facebook, getting to know each other on Whatsapp, Skype or Viber, then after a Tango and some romantic Twitters, meeting face to face for the first time at the altar. The interesting thing is, there is no evidence to suggest these types of marriages have a higher failure rate than the typical boy-meetsgirl scenario. Let’s face it; the latter situation has not set the bar very high with divorce rates at around 50% and the highest chance of divorce falling between the 4th and 8th wedding anniversaries Age also has an impact on marital success with research indicating those who marry younger are more likely to divorce. For example, of women who married before they were 20, around 50% were divorced before their 30th anniversary. If they were in their early 30’s when they married, approximately 20% had divorced by the same anniversary, and 7% had divorced if they were in their late 40’s when they married. Given this background information, let me tell you about Jack and the reality show that revolved around him quite a few years ago. Back then they were not called ‘Reality Shows’, they were called ‘Documentaries’. Jack was a tall, lanky Australian with a leathery hide from many years of hard work on his 20,000 acre sheep station in north-western New South Wales. At around 65 years of age, he dressed and swaggered like John Wayne in Rio Bravo and spoke with a slow Aussie twang in his voice reminiscent of Paul Hogan’s Crocodile Dundee. Although he had done and experienced most things life had to offer, the one thing he had never done was get married. Single women were few and far between in his neck of the woods and besides that, he had always been too busy. But now, the years had taken their toll and his hard-working days were over. He had sold all his sheep when prices had peaked, apart from a hundred he kept around for sentimental reasons. The

78 78

PATTAYA TRADER

money went into his bank account as quite a substantial nest egg for his retirement. He had outlived his two brothers and his only sister was now a ‘city slicker’ in Melbourne and not interested in sheep. Since he had no children, there was no-one to leave his property to when he was gone, so Jack decided to find a wife and possibly sire an heir. Not really sure how to go about it, he contacted a marriage bureau in Sydney and outlined his requirements. It wasn’t long before the agency found him the perfect mate and sent him a photo along with her details. Angelica was 39 years old but looked more like 29, and came from a large family. The only problem was she lived in the Philippines. Jack didn’t care. He liked the look of her. Somehow, a television news crew found out about Jack’s search and decided it would make a great story. With his consent, they filmed and documented his path to matrimony. Angelica lived in the middle of nowhere; Isabela Province in the north of Luzon, the main island of the Philippine archipelago. With the help of the film crew and the Sydney agency, he made arrangements to meet her and her family on what would be his first trip out of Australia. Jack and his entourage caught a flight to Manila and then a public bus to Santiago City from which they hired a car and driver to take them along a dusty dirt track to her village. Everyone for miles around came out to meet them. Jack, used to a solitary life, had never seen so many people in the one place. Her family home was made of rough-cut timber, hollow block and corrugated iron. It was no more than 30 square metres in size and the kitchen had a dirt floor and wood-burning stove with a woodpile just outside the door. Angelica’s family treated Jack like a king. After all, anyone who owns land in the Philippines is of the aristocracy and anyone owning 20,000 acres is absolute royalty. Jack had a wonderful time and agreed to marry Angelica on his next trip. A few months later he was back and the happy couple duly tied the knot in a catholic ceremony. Jack was not catholic but the priest said he would overlook that given Jack’s substantial land title. The reception for about a thousand invited and uninvited guests was all generously paid for by Jack. About six months later, Jack finally obtained a marriage visa for his bride and accompanied her on a flight from Manila to Sydney. They then booked a charter flight to Bourke where Jack’s truck was waiting for the six-hour drive along a dusty dirt track to his homestead. Remember I said his property was in northwestern New South Wales? Well, if you look on a map, that is almost in the centre of Australia. It is the middle of nowhere. Jack’s home was made of rough-cut timber, stone blocks and corrugated iron. It was no more than 40 square metres in size and the kitchen had a dirt floor and wood-burning stove with a woodpile just outside the door. The look of surprise on Angelica’s face was memorable. A member of the documentary crew commented that, in their opinion, she would fit right in.

Surprising Devices that would have been a fantasy just 10 years ago

One of the best aspects of writing a column on technological advancements is that you get to be surprised on a weekly bases! From video technology to 3d printing, all aspects of industry and services are going through a constant revolution almost daily. Let's see what the world of robotics, 3D printers and the internet has had in store for us these past few weeks:

Lily self flying drone: the ability of shooting real time slow motion video, meaning that with a quick click you can add that extra 'Wow ' factor to all your videos without the need for editing!

“Thanks to it's own custom app, you can tell Lily to shoot different styles with a simple tap of your screen. ” I mean, we thought being able to remote control these flying machines was cool enough, but now they don’t even need any directions! Though still in its first version, the Lily autonomous drone will follow its tracking device wherever it is placed - the device pretty much looks like an oversized wrist watch. Once you take her out of the box, all you have to do to operate her is this: “Turn the switch on and literally just throw her into the air, she's smart enough to figure out the rest! When it comes to landing that’s pretty much the same, just let her know it’s time to get down from the skies and she'll come back and land right on your hand.

“Turn the switch on and literally just throw her into the air, she's smart enough to figure out the rest!” Our little flying friend comes packed with an HD wide-angle camera, much similar to the specs you'd expect on a Go-Pro portable camera - meaning the shots from this wonderful machine are nothing short of impressive. Further more, Lily comes with

Even better, thanks to it's own custom app, you can tell Lily to shoot different styles with a simple tap of your screen. Choose the 'Follow' option and Lily will chase after whatever has the tracker, pick the 'Spiral' option and Lily will now fly in circles around whoever has her tracking device, Heck, you want a steady aerial overview of something? Just tap the 'Fly Up' shot and Lily will get that perfect shot you wanted. The fact that this wonderful drone comes equipped with accurate stabilizers only means the shots Lily can get will certainly be better than what you could manage on your own. You can see some very nicely crafted shots made with Lily by simply typing 'lily flying drone' into Google, they are indeed worth the watch.

Features: • Takes videos (1080p video, or 720p up to 120 frames per second), sound recordings and pictures (12 Megapixels) • HD wide angle camera • 20 minute flying time • Easy take off and landing • Water Proof • Lightweight, durable and portable • Different shot styles pre-programmed and activated through mobile app including slow motion

Doodler a hand-held 3D Printer Though more like a toy than an actual professional printer, the fact that you can now create physical objects by just 'drawing' them onto the real world is still an amazing reminder of how far are now in terms of making what was once considered science fiction an everyday thing.

”Once loaded and heated, the user can press the different dials on the body to control the amount and speed at which the molten plastic will flow out of the printer's nozzle.”

”If you think about it, technically if you can draw it, now you can make it!!” Do keep in mind that the printer can only use this particular type of plastic to work. You will be limited by the physical characteristics of the material i.e it's not a heavy duty plastic so a lot of your designs and objects will be of the decoration type rather than actual working prototypes. Not that it matters too much at the end of the day, it is still a lot of fun for the creative type!

This pen-looking device works just as you would imagine: After loading the back of the printer with the special plastic material that it comes with, when heated it will act like the 'ink' you can use to draw physical objects. Once loaded and heated, the user can press the different dials on the body to control the amount and speed at which the molten plastic will flow out of the printer's nozzle. Sure, it will probably take you a few practice runs before you can get the technique right, but once you do, you will be amazed at the huge diversity of objects you can make. If you think about it, technically if you can draw it, now you can make it!!

Have you thought about

INVESTING ETHICALLY? Ethical investing — usually called socially responsible investing (SRI) — is the application of criteria other than maximizing financial return to one’s investment decisions.

Ethical investing — usually called socially responsible investing (SRI) — is the application of criteria other than maximizing financial return to one’s investment decisions. Its history dates at least to the Pioneer Fund in 1928, formed by evangelical Christians who wished to avoid supporting alcohol and tobacco production. Religious groups cooperated to form the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) in 1971. It both served as a clearinghouse for investor information and encouraged the rise of a tactic closely related to SRI, the morally motivated shareholder resolution. Both tactics were used in the course of the SRI’s most famous campaign: disinvestment in South African companies during the 1980s as a protest against apartheid. The SRI movement is dominated by what can fairly be called leftist political leanings. This is not to say that there is no overlap between the concerns of mainstream SRI and the concerns of Christian social teaching. The political bias does result, however, in a skewed set of priorities. That this is the case is clear from perusing the writings even of most fervent on the issue. One listing of SRI’s concerns includes torture and kidnapping in South America; forced and child labor in Asia; and environmental degradation around the world. Notice any glaring omissions? The commercialization of sex through pornography and other forms of entertainment is arguably in some people’s eyes the single most destructive force in Western culture since the 1960s, yet it does not receive a mention from most SRI advocates

I don’t wish to tar the SRI movement as a whole. It is decidedly a good thing that people are thoughtful about the moral implications of their investments and no one has the right to take the moral high ground. To say this, however, is not to say that every outfit claiming to be “socially responsible” employs a species of moral reasoning about economic affairs that is compatible with the socially responsible tradition. Tte Green Century Funds group engages in shareholder activism to prevent drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge To put it practically- shifting your IRA money into an SRI account in many cases will not accomplish the goal of conforming to a vision of financial stewardship.

For example, the Green Century Funds group engages in shareholder activism to prevent drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and to pressure the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to drop its opposition to climate- change legislation — two issues that are, at least, debatable within the parameters of social teaching. The question of moral responsibility in investing is admittedly a complex one. Investors should apply the same principles here as in any other kind of moral analysis. Good is to be done and evil avoided. In the case of mutual-fund investing, one runs up against a serious obstacle: knowledge. Most funds invest in a large number of companies. These companies may each, in turn, possess a number of subsidiaries. An ongoing procession of mergers and acquisitions, which changes the makeup of these companies, further complicates the issue. In sum, it is simply not feasible for the average investor to be able to keep track of whether the companies in a given mutual fund are all “clean” with respect to participation in morally objectionable commerce. Mutual-fund investing, moreover, implies a certain distance with respect to cooperation in evil. The decision of the investor to place money in a mutual fund is separated from the decision to engage in immoral activity by, at the very least, two or three layers of moral actors. These considerations suggest that mutual-fund investing will not normally be objectionable. But this should not be taken as a blank slate to ignore the moral analysis changes further when dealing with investing directly in individual corporations: Here the cooperation is more proximate, and so more care is needed.

On the issue of socially responsible investing– as in any moral life in general– there is no substitute for a well-formed conscience. Some readers may no doubt find such an answer insufficiently concrete — but investing is not the same kind of act as theft or the use of force against the helpless. It involves a host of constantly changing factors and individual circumstances, all of which have a bearing on the moral question. On the issue of socially responsible investing– as in any moral life in general– there is no substitute for a well-formed conscience. David.thrifty@yahoo.com .

The Apple Watch: Well of-course! no surprises here. What other product would we look at if it wasn't for the new smart watch from Apple? For a while now, wearable accessories have steadily increased as a technological trend, so much so, Apple has now officially entered the smart watch race in an attempt to make this type of technology mainstream. The watch was released a few weeks ago to mixed reviews. Apple heads and early adopters have already praised the device for it's beautiful design and integrated apps, many however have complained about the fact you have to have an i-Phone (5 or above) to even use the watch while it's short battery life (about a day) has actually angered users. Let's take a good look at some of the main factors that define this new device, then you can draw your own conclusions about Apple's latest creation.

Beautiful Design: This one shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The Californian company has always been praised for it's ingenious, clean and gorgeous designs, the apple watch of-course, it's just another instance where the technology giant gets to showcase it's experience on the matter. The watch sports a curved steel case and a curved glass cover, the body of this watch looks astonishingly stylish and balanced, so much so, even Swiss watchmakers could praise this watch on it's design. ! The fact that users can choose between a large diversity of what are known as 'collections' i.e same watch with same power, but the straps and the look of the watches differ dramatically, only mean it is up to the buyer (and the power of his/her wallet) to decide what your apple watch will look like. -The Apple watch does an amazing job at understanding exactly what is it that you need to know. With clear fonts and well designed displays, you won't miss anything! Just glance at your wrist, find out who is sending you what where and then simply decide whether it is important enough to justify getting your mobile phone out of your pocket to reply. Do keep in mind that the apple watch will allow you to directly reply to tweets and message without the need of pulling your phone out.

Useful Apps:

Price:

Remember the Apple watch is more an accessory than a stand alone device. It can pretty much run a minimized version of most of the default apple apps and some of the most popular ones like twitter and Facebook. It will even allow you to reply to tweets and short messages (and send hand drawn doodles) to other devices and watches without having to use your phone which is indeed convenient.

Well, what can we tell you? It is an Apple device, it is extremely beautiful so I'm assuming Tim Cook and his buddies at Apple Inc. felt like the $349 wasn't an exorbitant amount of money to ask for. I personally don't agree with that as there are many more options out in the market that offer very similar capabilities, longer battery hours and the ability to work with any phone not just an i-Phone.

Possibly one of the best apps that the Apple watch comes with is the health tracking app. This incredibly useful piece of software will track how much you walk, and at what speed. It can check and control your heart rate as-well as calculate the amount of calories you burn during a workout. Heck, it will even allow you to share your heart rate and achievements over the internet so you can show your workout buddies!

Battery Life: This factor is certainly one of the most talked about, the fact the Apple phone's battery only lasts a single day has pretty much upset and anger many users. This is even worse when you consider competitors such as the pebble smart-watch can now last up to 7 days with a single charge. You have to accept though, having to remember to charge yet another device is kind of annoying, especially when it is the type of device that is in charge of keeping your time tracking! I mean, I do understand running apps and all the pretty interface takes power, but does this mean that maybe Apple should have held back a little bit?

Conclusion: Though the apple watch is still not available in Thailand, given the huge and generally positive reception Apple products usually get here, it is only a matter of time before electronic shops in Bangkok start offering devices imported from Japan and Hong Kong. Keep in mind though, the price will be much higher than the ones stated above (until the official Apple retailers get the OK from Apple to star selling them directly in Thailand) Regardless of the mixed reviews and complaints about it's battery life, the Apple watch is still expected to become the best sold wearable mobile device in existence. So technically we are indeed just witnessing the mass adoption of this type of technology.

I can't tell you what to think about this one, but personally, I'm not the type of person who wants to worry about charging their watch everyday.

Transfer of Property

Ownership in Thailand The registration of the transfer of property ownership from the owner or developer to the buyer takes place at the Land Office after the property is built, the contract has been signed, and all the installment payments have been made. The remaining balance of the purchase price is usually paid on the day of transfer at the Land Office. Whoever buys or sells a property in Thailand should be aware of the following taxes and fees: • Land Registration (Transfer Fee) The rate is 2% of the appraised value of the property. • Stamp Duty/Fee 0.5% of the assessed value or the actual selling price, whichever amount is higher. Stamp duty does not have to be paid if specific business tax is applicable. • Specific Business Tax 3.3% calculated on the basis of the government appraised value or the actual selling price, whichever amount is higher. This tax only applies if the property is sold within the first five years of ownership. Otherwise, a stamp duty will be assessed instead.

• Income Tax Income from the sale of a property is subject to income taxation. This is calculated based on the government appraised value of the property, the length of time it has been owned and the applicable personal income tax rate. When the property seller is a company, the withholding tax is 1% of the selling price or of the assessed value, whichever is higher. When the property seller is an individual, the withholding tax is calculated on a progressive income tax scale. Under Thai tax laws the land office must take the income withholding tax at the time of transfer of ownership. There are no specific rules as to who pays for which taxes. It must be negotiated by the buyer and the seller, and must be stipulated in the sales contract.

Documents needed for the transfer of land and house ownership

• The title deed for the property (Chanote) • Copies of the passport(s) or other identification documents of both the buyer and the seller • Copies of the entry stamp(s) in the passport(s) of the foreign buyer and/or the seller • Company Documents updated for the last 3 months

Documents needed for the transfer of condominium ownership

• The title deed for the property (Chanote) • Document from condominium juristic person stating that all maintenance fees are paid up (Letter of Debt Free) • Copies of the passport(s) or other identification documents of both the buyer and the seller • Copies of the entry stamp(s) in the passport(s) of the foreign buyer and/or the seller • Foreign Exchange Transaction Certificate or Thor Thor 3 (for purchases in the name of a foreigner only) • Company Documents updated for the last 3 months Foreign Exchange Transaction Certificate or Thor Thor 3 is a legal document issued by banks upon receipt of foreign currency into a bank account in Thailand. This must be requested from the bank when remitting funds to Thailand for the purpose of purchasing a condominium unit. In line with a foreigner’s acquisition of a property, it is Thailand government’s condition that the money used to pay for the purchase price must originate from an offshore source in the form of foreign currency. This certificate shall be presented to the officer at the land office where ownership of the condominium unit will be registered. Failure to comply with this requirement will prevent the registration of the property under the

purchaser’s name. A buyer or seller of real property can authorize another person to handle the transaction on their behalf by filling in and signing the power/letter of attorney form specially provided by the Land Office. The government provincial and local Land Department's branch offices in Thailand only accept the official standard Land Department's Thai script 'Power of Attorney' (Tor Dor 21 for land and house; Or Chor 21 for condominium). Using these forms will ensure that the principal gives all the required information. The completed form, together with a certified copy of the principal’s citizen ID card or passport and visa, are to be presented by the agent to concerned officials of the Land Office. If the form is completed outside Thailand, the principal must have the completed form legalized/notarized by the embassy or consular office/a notary public. All documents required by the Land Office such as Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate, etc. must be submitted in Thai. Translated documents must be certified as correct translation of the original document.
