By Kevin Cain
H
aving lived in Pattaya for a number of years April is a time of year that I have come to love and hate. The love part is easy, as I celebrate my birthday in April and for my whole life I have spent the day like an overexcited child. The hate part comes with the start of Songkran and the so called celebrations that accompany it in Pattaya.
Songkran is celebrated in Thailand and many parts of Southeast Asia as lunar New Year. Amongst the old traditions water is poured over Buddhist statues and it represents purification and the washing away of sins and bad luck. Also it is a sign of respect for younger people to pour water over the palms of their elders. As time has progressed this gentle blessing has been replaced with an all out aqua war fought out on every street corner. The small pail of water has been usurped by high power jet guns that can soak an opponent at fifty paces. OK, for most it is a fun day out where the combatants expect to get a good soaking and are not disappointed. Generally in most towns and cities across the kingdom a single or sometimes two days are set aside for the boisterous activities. One can put up with such behaviour one day a year but for some reason Pattaya takes Songkran to another level and it lasts nearly a whole week. This makes daily life an absolute nightmare, a trip to the shops or a stroll to the doctor's is nigh on impossible and many of my Thai friends complain bitterly about getting to and from work. One year I walked into my bank on Beach Road at 9am and found the poor cashier soaked to the skin, this was a full three days before Pattaya's official Songkran festival day ! Last year I thought it was time to get out of town and experience Songkran in two different towns just to see how they celebrated the festival in another part of the country. I drove up to Roi Et with three friends for the first Songkran day and then on to Kon Kaen for day two and three.

Issue 185 | MARCH 2016
Roi Et had designated just a single day for the festivities and we drove about ten minutes out of town to a small village to sample the hospitality of one of my friend’s aunties. In typical Thai family tradition her house was crowded with relatives eating all manner of tasty treats and we were shown to a table to eat lunch. So far not one beer had been drunk and there was no sign of any water being hoyed around. It was explained to us that a procession around the village would start at 2pm and the fun would start then. There was an excited air of expectation of what was to come, but also a feeling more like a respect of what the day really stood for. The allotted time finally arrived and small buckets were handed out filled with water, then a whole entourage of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and other assorted relatives all made their way to the starting point of the procession. Things now were getting a little raucous and water was being sprayed everywhere with small groups playing loud Issan music on the back of trucks. Being the only ferang in the village (sounding very much like Little Britain) I was instantly drenched and covered in white chalk, but everybody was laughing and shaking hands. The atmosphere was very different to that back in Pattaya, and one of my friends confided that the procession circled the four roads that surrounded the village and ended at the temple where a collection was being made to repair the roof. The whole celebration lasted about six hours and by 8pm we were making our way back to auntie's house to dry off and eat dinner. Beer and whisky adorned the table and we hungrily devoured the spicy Issan food and kept our alcohol levels topped up to laugh late into the night. The following day we all woke rather late and for myself I definitely had a terrific thirst and a woolly head. I was glad that I was not driving and settled into being navigator for the trip to Khon Kaen. The first stop was a roadside Amazon to drink some strong black coffee and copious amounts of water. We had booked ahead for two nights at the Kosa Hotel in the city centre and I was groggily excited about my return to the university town. I have a soft spot for Khon Kaen and have visited a few times before, so I was more than happy when it was suggested to continue our Songkran celebrations there.Khon Kaen had allocated an official two days holiday dedicated to Songkran and we would be partying for both. Unlike Pattaya, there is a designated area where the mayhem can take place and outside of it's cordoned perimeters life went on as usual. Luckily for our group the party area was just over the road from the hotel and we were eager to join in the loud festivities. Making our way across the road to the sounds of laughter and music we were not once sprayed with water. But turning the corner it was like a battle zone, the place was crowded and the party was in full swing. Water was everywhere and every manner of firing utensil was being used to dispense differing amounts of water over the drenched throng. The atmosphere was more like a fete or garden party; there were ducking stools, stalls and many water based games for kids. Alcohol was banned from the war zone and everybody was having good clean fun (no pun intended) laughter was the main noise you could hear. After fighting our way through the mayhem and out of the party zone, we found many bars and restaurants open and serving food and drinks civilly. We made one such bar our base for the two days and popped in and out of the fray whenever the fancy took us. It also was a great meeting point for people catching up with us as well as ourselves. Khon Kaen's festivities were totally different than our time in Roi Et. But they were contained and there was definitely more of a family atmosphere than back in Pattaya. My friends and I, had for once thoroughly enjoyed Songkran and it was a joy to take part in the festivities. I think I will be taking to the road again to celebrate the lunar New Year and avoid the carnage that goes on relentlessly in Pattaya.

Another idea for escaping the Songkran madness is to join an organised trip for either one day or a few to get you out of Pattaya. Expat clubs such as PILC (Pattaya International Ladies Club) and the various expat clubs around town regularly organise these for their members. For example Pattaya City Expats Club currently have a “Songkran Getaway To Java Land of Natural Beauty and Mysteries” where beautiful mountain landscapes, mysterious and erotic ancient temples are promised. Also visits to workshops of skilled craftsmen and artisans. They include stops at Jakarta, Central Java and Yogyakarta renowned as the center of education, classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, dance, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. Of course the beauty of an organised trip is that you have no stress or pressure to check out times, departures, addresses. Don’t get me wrong sometimes the joy of discovering hidden gems in a foreign place can be a great adventure but when time is short and temperatures soaring you long for someone taking care of everything for you and the experience of putting yourself in the capable hands of your trip organiser. With a minimum of just 4 people you can also consider booking a minibus trip with companies such as “Common Tour and Travel” or at any of the small travel booths around town. I recently tried such a trip to Chantaburi and can thoroughly recommend the joy of having a pick up from home and drop off at the end of the day so you literally just turn up camera in hand and wait to be entertained. Of course to fit everything in to a one day trip you are usually talking a more than usually early start – we were collected at 7 a.m. Strangely enough I found this rather fun and reminiscent of the excitement I had as a child going on a family holiday that always (at least in our house) necessitated getting up while it was still dark! However once on board there is nothing to do but relax, no driving or navigating and plenty of room to stretch out for a little extra shut eye if required.

The first stop en route was Rayong to have a look at the fish market. A great opportunity for taking photos and watching the boats come and go with their nets fully laden. They literally bring these nets to shore to be sorted, the fish extracted, cleaned and displayed on the nearby stalls ready for sale –you can’t really get much fresher than that! Although as you can imagine nobody took the opportunity of purchasing any fish with a full day in a mini bus ahead. We were then back on board with our next stop being the “obligatory temple”. However Wat Kao Su Kim is blessed (sorry pun attack!) with a sweet little funicular for those not wishing to ascend the rather steep and lengthy staircase. At this point I should mention that if you are ever going on such a trip and see that it includes a visit to a temple you should consider carefully what you are wearing as sleeveless tops and generally revealing clothes will mean that you will not be welcomed inside. So best to check with the operator before you go, after all you can always bring something with you on the bus and take it off after the temple visit.
After the temple visit our intrepid group set off for the Sapphire mine, which to be honest was not quite what I expected. The stones are mined using an open cast system that means there is no experience of going under the ground – maybe just as well - although it is amazing to see how precious stones can be gathered relatively close to the surface. You almost feel that your foot could suddenly kick up a large gem as you stroll around the outskirts (alas not on our trip). Then from the mine we travelled around several fruit and rubber plantations where we saw Durian, Pineapple and Seeraaman (Lychee) being grown up close. Again I was struck by the advantage of going on a trip with a well informed guide – ours was very engaging ,English not at all bad. He told us how the Thai farmers once enjoyed “good old days” where their rubber would raise 100 baht per kilo but now find it only fetches around 30. Life didn’t seem particularly better for those who opted for a crop like pineapples because these take a whole year to grow ! Lunch was traditional, Thai and rather charming and our last stop before heading back to Pattaya was the “Mat Village”. Perhaps something to be wary of with an organised trip is that as “captive audiences” we are often taken to a factory or shop to be relieved of our cash. However on this particular case although there was a small shop on the premises I have to say nobody felt pressured to make a purchase. Those who just wished to see the drying, dying and weaving processes were left in peace to do so and those of us who wanted a souvenir found that there were some really lovely items available for only a 100 or so baht. A quick stop at a fruit market (where I did take the opportunity of making a couple of purchases) and we were home by 5 pm a lovely and quite fascinating day out.

Pattaya LOVES to celebrate Songkran! Pattaya likes to celebrate Songkran, No Pattaya LOVES to celebrate Songkran ! The festivities that accompany Songkran are long and varied in Pattaya. As there is no other place in the Kingdom that parties so much, and for such a long period of time as Pattaya. Sometimes the festivities are a little too much but when the big day comes around then Pattaya does it in style.
the main place to be will be Beach Road in central Pattaya. The best day to celebrate Songkran in Pattaya this year will be on the 19th of April and although there are celebrations all over the city the main place to be will be Beach Road in central Pattaya. The whole road is cordoned off to traffic from the Dolphin roundabout to the start of Walking Street. And all along the 3km length of Beach Road are numerous events and attractions to party all day and well into the night. I find the easiest way to survive the day and make sure you do not miss out on anything, is to start at the Dolphin Roundabout and slowly make your way down the whole length of the strip ending at Waking Street. I state slowly but you really do not have a choice in the matter as on the 19th the place will be jam packed. Prepare yourself before you leave your dwelling, as you, your clothing, your possessions and your money will be in for a right proper drenching. Make sure you have keys, money, phone and any other valuables securely fastened in a waterproof pouch preferably hung around your neck. Also if you are intending to stay out all day perhaps take a change of dry clothing for your journey home. And if you want to enter the fray of joining in on the water-sports, then purchase your weapon of choice and lock and load in advance. There is no right of way or anything as formal as that along the battle zone, you just have to fight your way through the aqua melee as best as you can. The first point of call is probably Tavern by the Sea where things tend to be a little more civilised and it will ease you into the day gently. As you head towards Walking Street expect the throng to get thicker and the fun to get messier. From Tavern pass Soi 5 and 6 where there are normally parties exploding all over the place and progress on to the Hard Rock Hotel. It is here that normally the first stages, bands and live acts start appearing and all sorts of high pressure water cannons and other extreme liquid dispensing machines are menacingly pointed at the drenched crowd.

By now there is probably not one part of you that is dry By now there is probably not one part of you that is dry, and any part of your body not covered up will be white with liquid chalk. A new hilarious addition to the powerful water jets mounted from high platforms are bubble pits. These are areas of bubble machines pumping out soap-suds, covering people from head to foot in soapy balls of air. Crossing Central Pattaya Road you will find the party in full swing and sound systems competing with each other playing varied types of increasingly loud music. Then up crops Central Festival and one of the biggest parties on the strip. As the courtyard in front of the mall is dedicated to one big party with a stage, live acts, dancers, DJ's and of course massive water cannons. Normally this is the place to party well into the evening - that is if you can squeeze in.
From Central Festival to the entrance of Walking Street it is a war zone of water, bubbles, chalk and alcohol. From Central Festival to the entrance of Walking Street it is a war zone of water, bubbles, chalk and alcohol. It is reminiscent of an old zombie film with bodies lurching forward bumping into other bodies who scarcely seem to recognise the collision. Once reaching your destination and if you are keen to party some more, then now you have an idea which part of Beach Road you want to go back to and continue your day.It is worth keeping in mind that later on in the evening things start to get a little fractious as the alcohol takes effect and some people get a little annoyed at the continuous buffeting and pies in the face. I personally opt out at this stage and cower for cover with the intention of getting some hot food inside me and drying off. When the sun goes down and you are soaking wet then things tend to get a little too cold for my liking and I leave the partying for younger participants. No matter how much I try to protect myself on Songkran I always end up with a heavy cold or the flu a couple of days later. Waking up the following morning I often feel like I have been into battle and my limbs ache.I can fully understand people opting out of such a crazy day and my advice is if you are not in the right frame of mind then stay away.
you will certainly have something to tell your friends back home ! But if you want to have fun and have a mad day once in a year, then Pattaya Songkran is definitely for you. But be prepared for one wild event - you will certainly have something to tell your friends back home !

haiyot Chanyam of Thailand ,despite being self taught, has been shortlisted for the world’s biggest photography competition - the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards. Surely an inspiration to any of you budding photographers out there. • Selected from 230,103 images from 186 countries • Entries from Thailand were up by 233% on 2015 • Open category winners to be revealed 29th March, overall winners 21st April • They are competing for the latest Sony digital equipment and $5,000 prize • Images available for publication at press.worldphoto.org
Chaiyot Chanyam, a senior executive in a global packing firm based in Pakkred, Nontaburi, is a self-taught photographer who began taking pictures just five years ago. His shortlisted image “Splashing birds” shows two birds sipping water on the bank, unaware of the coming crashing waves. Chanyam will now compete to win the Open Split Second category against photographers from around the world for the Open Photographer of the Year title, the latest Sony digital imaging equipment and $5,000 (USD) prize, which will be announced at a Gala Ceremony in London 21st April. In addition, Chanyam will have his work shown in London as part of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in April and May and be published in the 2016 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book. The exhibition will also include the first major European exhibition of the artistic duo and fine art photographers RongRong & inri, recipients of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the awards Talking about his shortlisted photograph Chanyam comments: “My image is all about knowing what is going to happen. This is because if we could not see what was coming, one cannot take such an action scene in time no matter how fast your camera is. By using my street photography skill and observing each moving element in the scene, I could roughly see what was coming and was able to prepare my shot and capture the right moment at its peak. This way, the power of the scene and expression of the subjects will be most impactful and can, therefore, connect to audiences.” Entries to the awards from Thailand were up over 233% on 2015 and Chanyam’s image was selected from 230,103 images from 186 countries, the highest number of entries in the awards’ nine year history and 33% increase on 2015. The total number of entries received by the Sony World Photography Awards since its launch in 2007 has now surpassed 1 million images, reinforcing the awards’ position as one of the most respected and influential photography competitions in the world. The Sony World Photography Awards rewards and recognises the world’s best contemporary photography attracting photographers of all abilities. The awards incorporate four competitions: Professional; Open; Youth and Student.
If you fancy having a go in Next year’s competition more information about the awards can be found at www.worldphoto.org About Sony Corporation Sony Corporation is a leading manufacturer of audio, video, imaging, game, communications, key device and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets. CHAKRI DAY
A
lthough Chakri Day (sometimes known as the Great Day) is not an official Buddhist religious day it is an important National Holiday in Thailand.Chakri Day is observed on April the 6th each year and is to celebrate the contribution of the mighty kings of the Chakri dynasty who have been ruling Thailand since 1782. It is obvious that the current ruler King Bhumibol Adulyadej is dearly loved by his people and so Chakri Day over the past decades during his reign has been highly commemorated. The King who is the ninth king of the dynasty, leads the celebrations at the Royal Chapel. He pays respects to his ancestors at the Royal Pantheon and also lays a wreath at the monument to King Rama 1st at the Memorial Bridge. King Rama 1 founded the Chakri dynasty and was responsible for consolidating the kingdom and establishing Bangkok as the capital of the country.
Before the Chakri dynasty came to power Siam was in turmoil. Burmese troops controlled swathes of the country in the north and were adamant that they were going to capture the capital Ayutthaya. In 1767 the capital fell and Burmese troops poured in, looting and pillaging as they plundered. But the capture of Ayutthaya had taken it's toll on the rampaging army and they withdrew after only one week of occupation. War continued to divide the country until Thong Duang (known as Chakri) rallied support around him in Thonburi and united all the Siamese armies. He understood that the reigning King Taksin was more distracted by religion and he was not paying attention to the protection of his subjects. A movement began to usurp the reigning monarch with their new hero and protector Chakri. Eventually Chaophraya Chakri was crowned as King Ramathibodi and reigned as King Rama 1 (this title was given after his death) in 1782. Being a military man Chakri knew that Thonburi was not an ideal place to defend further Burmese attacks and moved his army and the Capital, across the Chao Phraya River. So Krung Thep (Bangkok) became the new capital of Siam and has been so for over two hundred years now. The construction of the new capital indicated that Chakri would never going to move the capital back to Ayutthaya and many bricks from the old, ravaged walls of Ayutthaya were used in the construction of Bangkok. The whole project took seven years to complete and Bangkok's official name was given as Krungthep Mahanakorn Amorn Rata. Realising that the country had relinquished their ancient capital and some of their traditions, the new king ordered a revival of old ceremonies, such as; Coronation Day, Royal Ploughing Day and taking the Oath of Allegiance. There are many cultural activities that take place on Chakri Day including;
* The holding of seminars to clarify understanding of the royal activities and the significance of the day * Exhibitions about the king celebrating his life * The wreath laying ceremony for King Rama 1 * Raising of flags across the kingdom on government buildings * A day for people to make merit dedicated to the king
Thai nationals place flowers on statues of King Rama 1 all over the kingdom on Chakri Day and it is the one day of the year that the Pantheon (Phrasat Phra Debidorn) at the Royal Palace is actually open to the public. It houses life-sized statues of the first eight monarchs of the Chakri dynasty and it is here that the current king pays respect to his ancestors before laying a wreath at Memorial Bridge. Banks, schools and government offices will be closed on Chakri Day but most small and independent business will continue to operate.

Songkran Escape Artistry H
ow — where! — to escape sodden Songkran, Pattaya’s annual festival of road carnage, ceaseless drenchings and blow-in bogans? There is still somewhere to run, somewhere to hide. But book now!
For escape artists who need “out” from Pattaya during April’s 10-day water riot (or at any time of year), Thailand’s neighbourhood offers good options, some economical, some pricier. Check out these nine escape hatches, in alphabetical order.
Bali. Fly direct from Bangkok, hit Denpasar, do not stop at Kuta. Go northeast to Tulamben for diving; directly north to Ubud for dining, resorts and (if you must) all that New Age stuff; even further north to Lovina for surf-free seas; or west to Canggu for waves. Rainy season has ended, Easter is over — and April is a fine time to be in Bali. Tips: for highland tranquility, head to Tagalallang north of Ubud. For good surf minus the Kuta circus, Balian or Medewi. Burma. Cross by land at points like Ranong-Kawthuang (southwest) or Mae Sai-Tachilek (northwest) or fly Bangkok to Yangon. Check carefully your visa requirements (and Thai return status) well beforehand. Recommendations include Myanmar’s Andaman coast beaches like Ngapali and Ngwe Saung, the road (or train) to Mandalay, Pagan’s plain of two thousand temples and, if you have the time, a leisurely Pandaw cruise on one of the world’s great rivers, the Ayeyarwady.
Cambodia. “Cambo” is easy to reach via several Thai border crossings and regular coach services, as well as with flights to the capital and Siem Reap. Go for an on-line pre-arrival visa where possible. The great Khmer Angkor Wat complex is an “ought-todo” in this lifetime, and nearby Siem Reap dishes up multiple eatdrink-sleep-play options. In Phnom Penh, it’s now time to skip the tired “war porn” sights like the Killing Fields — Cambodia has much better things to be remembered for. Sihanoukville aka “Snookyville” on the Gulf is a beachhead of nothing special to do but live well.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS
Laos. Luang Prabang is still a slice of Buddhist Brigadoon on the Mekong. Temple City — there are some 33 golden-spired wats here — is a place of sundowners by the river and monks collecting alms in the morning. A 1990s World-Heritage listing arrived in time to beat the massed trippers and fast-baht developers who might have turned this former Laos royal town into a Phuketon-Mekong. Climb Phu Si Hill, visit Wat Xieng Thong, go upriver to the Pak Ou Caves. In the National Museum see the piece of moon rock that Richard Nixon presented to the Kingdom before he then bombed the smithereens out of the country.
Philippines. A favourite Pattaya persons’ April escape route.
Fly Bangkok to Manila, flee the capital’s traffic and lurk merchants, and sample Spanish-flavoured towns like Vigan or Laoag in north Luzon. Or bump into own your neighbours in Angeles and Subic. Boracay’s White Sand Beach is overcooked these days but if you have enough spare loot Palawan’s El Nido region is still one of the loveliest, best-preserved zones of corals and cocktails in the whole Pacific.
Malaysia. Ride the rattler, or bus, to Butterworth then cross over to Penang Island. Its World Heritage-listed George Town as a Chinese-Indian-Malay spice pot of great food, sepia memories and theatrically-poured kopi tarik. Drink history in at the Hong Kong Bar on Chulia Street or quaff elegantly in the waterfront E&O Hotel. To mutate Dr Johnson's quip about London: whoever is tired of George Town is tired of life ... laughing, drinking and conversation, too. Alternatively, try another island: Langkawi, a relaxing, intensely green and well-mannered place whose beaches resemble Kuta in Purdah.
Nepal. K-K—Kathmandu is recovering from Nepal’s large earthquake of 2015 about as well as any 600 year-old cluster of gods and temples, mud brick, timber and lives can. Fly direct from BKK. Springtime brings on the Himalayan wildflowers and the rhododendron forests in bloom. A late-season trek in the Middle Hills gives you a change of altitude and attitude that Pattaya can never match. Maldives. It’s far more expensive than a week on the beach at Snookyville, but Bangkok Airways flies direct to Male. You’ll want to book a resort package beforehand. Your Male Atoll options include diving and surfing resorts (such as Cinnamon Dhonveli), honeymooning (Centara Ras Fushi) and many, many more resorts. Heading to the Outer Atolls by float plane reveals a vision of pearl islands stitched like buttons to a turquoise sea. www.pattayatrader.com
Vietnam. The place is booming and if you can cross the street in Saigon (they’ve never shortened its “new” name to Ho City, perhaps for obvious reasons), surviving its tsunami tides of motorcycles, then you’ll probably want to quit the cities while you’re ahead. Try the cool, former colonial hill station of Da Lat, or the former prison island of Phu Quoc in the Gulf, or a number of beach towns such Nha Trang up the Central Coast. The old port of Hoi An is still authentic; meanwhile, way up north near China, the terraced, mountain town of Sapa with its hill tribes and cold, cold nights illustrates beautifully that timeless travelogue/ travel blog cliché about “Welcome to a land of contrasts.” PATTAYA TRADER

D
aniel Johnston moved to Pattaya in October of 2015 to work on the revamp of Kiss FM prior to its official launch that month. Unlike his father Steve (the station manager) Daniel had not worked on radio before but was eager to face the challenge and felt he had sufficient skills and knowledge of the industry to be a key player. Having worked as a professional Disc Jockey since 2008 in Dubai of all cities, Daniel’s knowledge of current chart music was his mainstay when working in bars along Sheik Zayed Road and in Hotels such the world renowned Atalantis on Palm Jumeriah. However, his education in music didn’t begin there – from before he was even a twinkle in his Dad’s eye, his father had been a Disc Jockey himself and later became a key player within the music industry. So for Daniel, music had been the food of his life and cultural experience from a very young age indeed. In recent years before moving to Pattaya, he had travelled along the shores of the Greek island of Corfu Djing in Kavos and the lesser known village of Agios Stefanos in the north of the island, with a brief visit back to the UAE to a city called Fujairah. In those years Dan realised that the superstar lifestyle wasn’t really is cup of coffee (should be tea but he drinks so much of the other) and felt a need to fulfill his thirst for music in other ways. So when the offer came to work on the radio station, out of the limelight, he jumped at the chance. So off to the wonderful Land of Smiles he came, with high hopes of learning new skills and building a radio station that would satisfy the masses and develop musical tastes within this beautiful country. He isn’t one of the radio stations presenters but rather takes the back seat in the public’s eye as far as Kiss FM’s listeners are concerned but “without Dan we just couldn’t have done it” Steve Johnston also the station’s Morning Kiss DJ has been known to say. So what does Dan do that is so important I hear you cry, or maybe not – well, his role is as the scheduler/producer of the station, simply put, means that everything you hear playing through your radio, phone or computer is his responsibility. The Radio Jocks themselves have some input with the choices of music and features in their shows but all music played out, adverts and the little bits in between ‘HEY YO DJ, TURN IT UP!’ are all under his “umbrella”.

LOCATION SPOTLIGHT
So when we asked him how it was to begin with he just laughed;
“‘Starting a radio station from scratch, with just a playout programme, a handful of songs and only one presenter is tough going to say the least – especially when you are a virgin to the software itself. It took hours to put together a structure for playout and easily a month or two tweaking to get it to the level we are at now. Some weeks the hours were relentless and I put in 36 plus hour shifts just to get the sound right -with a little help from my friend the coffee bean! Adding extra shows – which was a constant at the beginning – increased the work load which forever evolved into greater amounts. This he says pushed him on to working insane hours just to keep on top of it all.
Was it worth it? “So worth it! The challenges faced daily are such a buzz and there is never a dull moment. It helps, though, to have the right support and the team in place here now are just great, hence the stations rapid growth in just four months’.” When quizzed a little more on the future of the station and the achievements he is most proud of, he simply says that the crowning achievement is the station itself, the quality of the product and the hard work put in by all those who have made it happen. Although, to learn of a listenership in Bangkok already, is really exciting stuff giving high hopes for the future of the station in the months and years to come. As for further development, he said; “‘You’ll just have to watch this space” - with a cheeky wink. It wasn’t enough for Dan, however, just to work all those hours at the station keeping the audience entertained in their cars, homes and offices – he missed the bouncing dance floors and pumping out some of the music he has grown to love over the years to a visible audience. So, whilst continuing to maintain his responsibilities at the station he wandered down to Phuket (courtesy of the magic of technology), to entertain the folk there on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. After which he caught the bug of playing live again and decided to stay on for a while playing some beats on Surin Beach. We asked him how he managed to do this whilst still keeping the radio station going here in Pattaya;
“Simple really, the wonders of the internet nowadays means that I can pretty much do all my tasks remotely – accessing the computers from my phone, tablet or laptop anywhere I have a signal and ensure that the station is still running smoothly. There have been a few bumps in the road but it is all part of learning and there is always a solution to any problem, so that Kiss FM remains sounding as super as it does. Again though, couldn’t have done it without the support of those at this end, working around the clock to resolve any issues - we have a great team.” Daniel finished by saying he is now off to Sweden for another challenge in his personal life but there’s no way he is dropping the ball on the station here and has high hopes for its future.
“Soon enough there won’t be many people in the region who haven’t heard of us or tuned in from time to time and that is certain only to grow as we continue to raise the bar on FM and Streaming Radio in Thailand”

ILCs most important event of the year, the Annual General Meeting, was held on Tuesday 7th February at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Beach Road. More than 60 members and friends attended to farewell the outgoing Committee and cheer in the new team for 2016. President Helle Rantsen commended the Committee for all their hard work during 2015. She noted that some Committee positions had been unfilled but that many successful events had been arranged throughout the year and also mentioned the challenging environment currently affecting sponsorships and fund raising which is affecting not just PILC but other organisations as well.
The outgoing team vacated the stage and the team for 2016 was introduced. They are Helle Rantsen, President; Sue Tait, Vice President; Wendy Khan, Secretary; Deepika Bhateja,Treasurer; Kathy Greenleaf, Membership; Pauline Elphick, Activities; Lhen Lhen Mantela, Welfare; Vanessa Beading, Newsletter; Violette Gauthier, Hospitality. * Congratulations ladies! Helle Rantsen, re-elected for her fourth term as President, said it was wonderful to have such a great team to take the Club forward into 2016. We are looking forward to an exciting year and already have lots of ideas for events and activities for our members to enjoy. Helle also mentioned how nice it was to have a variety of ages, or as she put it: some women with a lot of life experience and some women with a lot of life still to experience ! Then all in attendance proceeded to enjoy an excellent buffet lunch provided by the Holiday Inn’s capable Food and Beverage team.
Coffee Morning at the Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort
PILC’s first coffee morning for 2016 was held in the beautiful setting of the Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort .76 ladies enjoyed the Beach Club terrace and fabulous Centara hospitality. What better way to spend a sparkling sunny morning than to be right next to the beach with glorious views across the bay! In fact members were treated to something much more like a brunch than a simple morning tea and the generous buffet was very much appreciated, enjoyed and savoured throughout the morning.

ST ANDREWS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL UPDATE Students across the Eastern Seaboard and Bangkok have been busily preparing for the 5th SAIS Eastern Seaboard Science Fair. Science Fair. Students at Green Valley have planned their experiments and are currently in the process of collecting data so that they can process and publish their results and impress their peers and teachers in a bid to win a place to represent the school in this year’s event. “The standard of entries is extremely high this year” added Mr. Frost (founder of the Science Fair and now head of the St Andrews Hover-build project); The Science Fair will take place on the 18th February and some fantastic prizes are on offer thanks to the kind donations from our sponsors; the SAIS PTG and the Amari (www.amari.com) have been extremely generous “I have no doubt that the competition will be extremely high, especially for the food and beverage prize sponsored by the Amari; I might even enter a project myself” Ms. McGlasson, the St Andrews culinary Science expert declared. Expect some fascinating projects, exciting challenges, tons of collaboration and don’t forget the Bottle Rocket competition. The Science Fair is coming. Don’t miss it. by Ed Thorp- Head of Science.
St. Andrews Students Participate in Model UN Bangkok Summit This weekend a group of KS4 and IB students took part in the first ever Model United Nations held by Harrow International School in Bangkok. They joined 200 students from 17 other international schools in Thailand and Singapore to negotiate, write, submit and debate resolutions on committees ranging from Human Rights, to Environment, to the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee. The topics for discussion were extremely relevant, for example: depletion of global water resources; deportation of refugees; and radicalisation of religion. Three of our students, Ty, Pierre and Mild, were already experienced in MUN conferences, and were able to develop their skills and contributions further over the two days. For the other eight students, it was their first experience of MUN. They were certainly on a steep learning curve, learnt a whole new language and were confidently delivering speeches and answering Points of Information (that's 'questions' outside the committee room) before the end of their first day. Resolutions were passed, new friends were made, and a lot of fun was had too. Once again, in the words of United Nations, clapping is in order - well done to you all for your hard work and achievements. By Ruth Greener, Secondary English Teacher

HEALTH & WELLNESS
T
his month we interviewed Gay Burnett a charming addition to the team at Pratumnak Clinic ( formally known as Surecell ). Coming to Pattaya via the Emerald Isle, Gay is well practiced in many conventional forms of healthcare from General Medicine ,Paediatrics and Midwifery to alternative therapies in a private clinic. Even running a trauma unit back in Ireland, she says of herself: “Being Irish I love to chat! Especially on the subject of health care”
If you’re looking for an informed, English speaking advisor to advise you on medical troubles then look no further. Gay’s role at the Pratumnak Clinic gives her plenty of opportunity to meet up with expats and foreign visitors to Pattaya and to speak about the services the clinic offers including regenerative medicine.. a subject she is passionate about. This passion for alternative and progressive therapies came about after she personally suffered from ME back in 1994 (then named “Yuppy Flu” ). She lost her faith in the system, when little was known about her condition and traditional methods of treatment failed to cure her. For 16 months she could hardly walk but she could read and read she did, about every form of treatment that could help her. Once her health returned to normal, she went on to treat numerous others from across Ireland in a private clinic in Monaghan, often being referred patients from the very trauma unit she had once headed because the team there knew she could help where they couldn’t. She says of her role now at Sure Cell’s Pratumnak Clinic: “It has many strands – Marketing our services to foreigners , educating and thus empowering people to help themselves to better health. Assessing their needs and, as the in house pysiatrist, recommending treatments , including options of physical therapy, diet and exercise, PRP and Stem cells." When I asked how a Physiatrist differs from a Physiotherapist Gay explained that a physiotherapist addresses specific areas that need attention e.g. a sports injury, may require mechanical therapy, massage, manipulation and dedicated exercise. A physiatrist will also evaluate the injury, examining the cause and identifying changes which should benefit your recovery including lifestyle - diet and exercise- - footwear used for exercise and physical therapy treatments with an achievable exercise program for use at home. Gay may recommend ultrasound, electrotherapy , tissue mobilisation activities , PRP or stem cell treatment. “I am working with the team in the clinic to identify the cause of your complaint and then to clarify the most appropriate line of management whether it be physical therapy or treatments such as PRP or Stem cell injections “ For those of you who read last issue’s article about Dr Peter Lewis and the great results he has had in treating patients with Osteoarthritis, you may remember he said: “The only thing you can do wrong is leave it too late”. A message Gay whole heartedly endorses: “Prevention is better than cure and when problems start we should take action sooner rather than later”.and a way of determining just when and whether you will need to take a course of action will be to book an appointment to have a consultation with Gay . During which you are certain to learn a thing or two : “I speak about common ailments including Osteoarthritis , Tendonitis and Muscle Sprain/Strain. I speak on lifestyle issues that affect us all on a daily basis • Diet –including portion control! • Hydration (remember that alcohol is generally a dehydrant Focused appropriate exercises, footwear for exercise, quality sleep, stress management etc.” For example I learnt that sleeping with two pillows can lead to back/ neck problems and disrupted sleep and as Gay explained the body requires maintenance, it needs good management and nurturing. Failure to do so presents problems that can include weight gain or loss, headaches, skin rashes and joint pain to name only a few! Some of the team’s recent successes include A 47 year old friend who was hardly able to walk up a steep set of stairs because of her progressive osteoarthritis of both knees. Gay recommended PRP treatments and today her friend is virtually pain free and very active and declares “I got my life back ……it’s great ! Also a 72 gentleman with severe shoulder pain is now 95% pain free and his range of movements have improved with some post PRP physical therapy. This city certainly attracts the over 40s generation, some for a few months others to retire here. However, Gay warns that with age, hormonal changes, genetic issues and or a history of injury bone and or joint degeneration is very likely. Addressing it in it’s early stage will give you a far greater improvement than waiting till the last minute! “Regenerative medicine offers a safe form of treatment with long lasting effects, Improved function and reduced pain (if indeed any pain). I’d like to say that I am a true believer in the benefits of good health management. I believe in regenerative medicine as the way forward. It is cost effective and safe”. “Come and have a chat with me I will offer you clear, uncomplicated advice” The choice to use, or not to use my advice remains yours.

THE GROWTH IN ZIKA AND DENGUE INFECTIONS IN THAILAND
F
or those who remember the 1987 explosion of dengue fever throughout the Kingdom, Thailand is bracing itself for an even worse epidemic in 2016. Last year there were 140,000 cases of dengue fever which was the highest number since the epic number of 170,000 cases in 1987.
The virus is passed on through aedes mosquito bites and is relatively hard to control as mass chemical spraying is difficult and expensive. The first line of defense has been to treat breeding areas with mosquito killer but as more people move from the country to large cities finding adequate ways to control the disease has proved to be difficult. Symptoms are flu like and the virus starts with aching joints, a hot fever and sometimes a rash. The fever can affect the liver, cause organ failure and in extreme cases death yet still an effective vaccine does not exist. Just as the authorities are working on a solution to the increasingly serious dengue situation another virus is making the headlines : Zika virus. Named after a forest in Uganda where it was first discovered, there have recently been cases reported in Southeast Asia and Thailand. Although it is mostly more common in South and Central America. Zika is spread in exactly the same way dengue, and by the same type of mosquito's. The symptoms are similar but not exactly the same. Like dengue a fever develops and there are joint pains and a rash, but with the addition of conjunctivitis.
by confirming that although some new zika cases had been reported this was nothing new as there have been confirmed cases since 2012. So at present there does not seem to be an outbreak of the zika virus in Thailand but of greater concern is the predicted increase in dengue cases. As the prevention methods are the same for both viruses then it is advisable to continue with the recommended procedures for any mosquito deterrent.and hopefully a fully effective vaccine will not be far away.
The resulting illness is usually milder than dengue with symptoms lasting a couple of days to a week. However, the greatest danger is for pregnant women who can develop Guillain-Barre syndrome when the resulting birth can lead to babies with severe birth defects. Again like dengue, there is no available vaccine or medication to specifically treat zika. The only medical advice is similar to that of flu, take plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. It is not advisable to take aspirin or ibuprofen as there can be a risk of hemorrhaging. Whilst authorities struggle to contain both outbreaks there are several precautions you can take to prevent contracting either virus and they are mainly the same.If you are moving about or traveling choose accommodation with mosquito screens on doors and windows. Try to sleep under a permethrin treated mosquito net and do not wash it or expose it to sunlight. When outdoors wear appropriate clothing to cover exposed skin remembering that mosquitoes can sometimes bite through thin materials. Always spray with an approved mosquito repellent and if you are using sunscreen then apply the repellent after the lotion. There are also some natural repellents such as; citronella oil, peppermint oil, soybean oil and cedar oil. Always use these in addition to any repellent spray you are using. Here in Thailand the ministry has been working with the Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to provide better screening of pregnant women who are displaying symptoms of the zika virus.Recently a ministry spokesman announced that the zika virus infection in pregnant women can lead to microcephaly or abnormal smallness of the head with incomplete brain development and that any new zika infection must be reported to the department. He continued

Chez Yvette, A family restaurant
where Mama cooks especially for you with Love.
S
ince my last visit to Chez Yvette located in the Holland Tulip Resort, off Soi Siam Country club, a lot has changed and all for the better. The owner’s own mother Renee Paule is now in the kitchen cooking up delights from her own family cookbook. A cookbook full of recipes that have been handed down over the generations, including dishes from Italy, the Valencia region of Spain, Algeria, Greece and Morocco as well as their home country of France. Last month they ran a daily specials promotion which featured dishes from different nations on different days of the week: Spanish on Monday, Italian on Tuesday through to Greek on Friday, you get the idea. Anyhow it was a great success and they intend to add many more nations’ dishes to the menu, I am particularly looking forward to having some great Moroccan food, as a good lamb tagine is one of my favourite meals and hard to find here in Thailand. On this occasion though, we stuck to the mainly French menu, our party consisted of 7 of us in total so we could really try a lot of dishes. Plates were being passed around at a furious pace, a little bit of this and a little taste of that. It was good to try each other’s food and it’s easy to do so, without being shy in this cosy, “no airs and graces” establishment. I think the highlights for us, as there were simply too many different dishes to mention in one review, were as follows For starters, the Goats cheese salad, slices of warm goat’s cheese melting on fresh baguette served on bed of salad greens in a really tangy mustard vinaigrette. My wife Pepsi, had the marinated salmon with Thai herbs that was

extremely fresh and full of flavour, as well as being beautifully presented. Last but not least, for the starters was a salad Caprese with Mediterranean tomatoes and burrata cheese, also extremely fresh and presented wonderfully. For mains we ordered Steaks, pork chops, lamb shanks as well as Rabbit in mustard sauce, a salmon steak that was to die for, but for me? I
Well I left it up to Mama to surprise me. was served a hearty portion of chicken, stewed in a sauce of tomatoes and sweet red peppers, named “Fritada de Pollo” a dish that I have never heard of before, truth be told. With the main dishes came a selection of salad, vegetables and potatoes and a nice bottle of Pinot Noir, recommended by Jeremy the owner himself. You could really taste in every dish, the heart and love that when into preparing it,
as if the chef was cooking for her own family. Now that’s hard to find nowadays. After finishing our main courses, most of us were full to the brim, and not everyone could commit to a dessert. But the dessert blackboard was so tantalizing, a few of us just had to go for it and forget about the diet for the rest of the evening. So tiramisu and Raspberry Panna cotta, two house best sellers, ordered for the less adventurous amongst us, whilst my friend Chris opted for the Nougat Glace, basically a nougat ice cream served with a raspberry sorbet. And for me, the ”Crowned Prince of Desserts” of the evening the “Pomme Yvette” a beautifully made, chocolate half globe shaped dessert made with sponge, stewed apples chocolate and mousse.
“”Wow”” a great finish to an amazing evening of fine food, wine and good company. The team at Chez Yvette really go the extra mile to take care of their guests and you are immediately treated as one of the family, as soon as you walk through the door. Service is friendly and efficient, surroundings are pleasant and tranquil with ample seating inside or outside on the veranda. Chez Yvette is a great venue to share an unrushed and memorable evening with family and friends, and you are always sure to find some pleasant surprises on the menu. Bon Appetite

SIMPLE SIMON
by Kevin Cain
imple Simon's is to be found on Jomtien Soi 5 Immigration at the beach end. The first time I heard of Simple Simon's, somebody was recanting to me what a marvelous breakfast they had devoured that morning.
British owned and run, Simple Simon's is one of Jomtien's most popular British style bar / restaurants and is only a stones throw away from the beach. There is also very affordable accommodation above and the rooms vary in price from 450THB to 650THB.
The food served is quite traditional British fare although they do have a comprehensive Thai menu as well. Famous for their breakfasts, Simple Simon's also pride themselves on their Sunday Lunch selection at very reasonable prices. The breakfast I wolfed down was the smallest on the menu and that still consisted of 2 English bangers, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 eggs, beans, 2 pieces of toast and 2 mugs of tea all for 120THB. I might add it was perfectly cooked with no traces of grease whatsoever and it was a refreshing change to actually eat bacon that tasted of something. The staff are extremely friendly with very good service, even when very busy nothing is too much for them. Kevin, mine host, recanted that their Sunday lunches are becoming so popular that they now serve them until 10pm at night, depending what meat you select they vary in price from 250THB to 195THB. They offer free WiFi and also a free photo copying service for those customers visiting Chonburi Immigration office. All Barclays Premier Football games are shown live along with live rugby, golf, test cricket and of course F1. A rather big surprise was their shop, where all kinds of goodies from back home can be purchased. If you have been having trouble obtaining those all important home comforts such as Tetley Tea, PG Tips, Bisto gravy, Indian curry sauces, HP Sauce, Midget Gems, Sports Mixture, Wine Gums, Thurston's pickled onions, Walkers crisps and Smedlys soups than Simple Simon's is the answer to your prayers.

FOOD & DRINK Also there is a full range of London Pie Company's produce; pies, pasties and liquor. Plus they also stock quality bacon, pork sausages, black puddings, ham, gammon, Melton Mowbray pork pies, scotch eggs. Although I have lived in Jomtien for over five years this was the first occasion I had actually been inside Simple Simon's, although I have always been aware of the name as many people have talked about it. In Kevin's own words, “It is a Jomtien institution. And how right he is as this thriving business has been serving quality food and refreshing drinks for over eighteen years. In reality Simple Simon's is a much more than a beach cafe / restaurant. It is a friendly home from home serving some top notch British grub and very reasonably priced drinks. Whilst sating your appetite or quenching your thirst you can also do some very home style shopping for your own larder. As I was leaving, slightly more rotund than I had entered, Kevin imparted some rather surprising news. Simple Simon's is now up for sale, this is solely due to his own personal and domestic reasons and certainly nothing to do with trade. So if you fancy becoming the fourth owner of this fine Jomtien institution then I advise you to pop along and see Kevin. But if you are fortunate enough to become the new mine host please continue to serve the delicious breakfasts and at such great prices.

LEMONS V LIMES
Many times we’r asked to use the juice of a lemon. OK for me it’s less likely to be for a recipe and more likely in an early morning drink of hot water, lemon and honey. However finding said lemon may be a little bit of a mission involving a trip to an expat friendly supermarket rather than picking up limes that are far easier to find from local markets and fruit stalls. So what exactly is the difference between lemons and limes? Well both have roughly the same amount of minerals : Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorous , Folate and Calcium but per 100 gm Lemons have more vitamin C - 53 mg as opposed to 29 mg in Limes. However, given the enormous disparity in price it is very easy to just buy and consume more limes to get the same amount of Vitamin C. OK they are smaller and more fiddly in terms of cutting and squeezing but there is a good trick you can use to get the maximum amount of juice from your lime and save time Simply place the fruit uncut in your microwave for just 10 seconds and you will be amazed at how much extra juice you can get from each lime when you do this. So therefore the Bargain Hunter recommendation is that for any drink or recipe that calls for lemon – it is very easy to swop that ingredient for lime and get what you want at a fraction of the price! If you have any thoughts, suggestions or comments please write to me “Belinda Bargain Hunter” at:pattayabargainhunter@ outlook.com ALL PRICES AND OFFERS WERE CORRECT AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRESS. H
i Folks, what a winter we did not have, high temperatures, rain and changing wind pattern. I think it has effected the catches both for big fish and bottom fish. Last month I told you about the spanish mackerel I caught being the only bite of the day. Going out on charter boats from Bang Saray, Sattahip and Pattaya I have seen hundreds of queen fish being caught and only a handful of Spanish mackerel. I once saw two Spanish mackerel caught on the same day. Queen fish hunt in shoals and Spanish mackerel are solitary hunters, that is why I was both happy and disappointed when I got him, it meant that it could be my only fish. Also the five ones I caught on my boat over the years were on four different live fish and one on live squid. Going out trolling for horse mackerel (bpla thoo) with my buddy Frank on the last day of January after that cold snap and windy conditions I tried something new. We headed out to the Hin Pra Nang the reef just south of Koh Krok on a dropping tide as we have had some good results in the past weeks. This time I trolled with my usual 6lb fluorocarbon leader with a thin hook baited with a thin strip of squid and 3 gold hooks tied at three 6 inches apart. These hooks were not baited because it would unbalance the rig and create drag. I know that gold hooks jigged close to the dock gets loads of minnows so I guessed that they would work being trolled. My first fish turned out to be a 12 inch 1 lb horse mackerel that fought well and dived down trying to reef me. That is when I picked up a 4 oz snapper on a bare gold hook. I got four more double fish and a couple just on the gold hooks. Of course there is a down side, I got reefed twice and lost the whole rigs each time, those extra hooks got locked into the coral and that was that.
By Roger
This will slow down the effect of the wind on the boat as it drifts, making the lines go almost straight down. You know when it is working when the bucket comes close to the surface. When the current slows down and you want the wind to help you cover more ground, just haul it in. It’s a great technic for bottom fishing on the drift and if it’s real breezy put a second one out at the back of the boat. If you get a good fish on, bring them in. just remember to haul it in before motoring back to your start point! I have tried Koh Man Wichia four more times and not got a bite. I have not seen Captain Deang out there for a long time, he’s got to be the best charter skipper between Pattaya and Sattahip. He knows something and he is not letting on! Once again I am losing a lot of days to windy conditions, this weather just will not settle down and follow the regular pattern, life’s a bitch! Have fun, Roger
The next time out the gold hooks only caught one fish in the first two hours of fishing, the regular hook got ten fish, so off they came. I will use them again when the fish are in suicidal mode. It just goes to show that the fishing gods like to muck about, do something new and you catch fish, do it again and again catch zip. I keep seeing Thai’s fishing Koh Man Wichia with lures. They are usually on glass fibre boats with big outboards and drift over the area where I anchor up. What surprises me is that they do not use a sea anchor. A sea anchor can be as simple as a bucket with a weight, tied to the front of the boat with a 3 metre rope.

The tournament is due to commence on the 8th March, with Seven Indian cities hosting a total of 35 matches. Eden Gardens, Kolkata will see the final played out, just under a month later on the 3rd April.
Recent History The 2014 tournament took place in Bangladesh, with Sri Lanka seeing off India by 6 wickets in what was a low scoring contest. A crowd of 25,334 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur saw the winners reach 134 runs in the 18th over, for a loss of just Four wickets. The award for highest scoring batsman during the tournament went to India’s Virat Kohli. He hit no less than 319 runs at an average of 77 runs per match. Kohli was in scintillating form hitting 24 Fours and 10 Sixes in his Six innings. Top Bowler honours went to South Africa's Imran Tahir. He picked up 12 wickets in Five games at an average of 10.91. Tahir’s best figures was 4/21. Netherlands Ahsan Malik followed a close second taking the same number of wickets, but in an extra Two innings, recording 5/19 as his best match figures in the process.
Group Formats
place in Kolkata on the Sunday 3rd April.
As normal there are Two (A, B) groups that hold the Eight qualifying teams. Winners from a round of 6 matches will then join the 10 ICC member countries in the Super 10 Group Stage.
Players to Watch
Group A consists of: Bangladesh Netherlands Ireland Oman Group B Consists of: Scotland Zimbabwe Afghanistan Hong Kong
Super 10 Groups As per the 2014 format of the tournament, the next stage is the Super 10 Groups. Group 1 will consist of Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, England and the winner of Group B. Group 2 will consist of India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and the winner of Group A. Each team plays the others once, with India vs New Zealand kicking things off on the 15th March in Nagpur. The last game in the Super 10 Group stage sees South Africa taking on Sri Lanka in Delhi on the 28th March.
There are several players who could easily walk away with the title of “player of the tournament”, here's a low-down on the the top 5. Ben Stokes - England Stokes is a powerful left hander, who is well capable of turning any game, with either the bat or ball. In form Stokes adds a real presence lower down the batting order and will certainly hope to capitalize on any fast starts that either Alex Hales or Eoin Morgan can produce. Stokes is very useful in the field and will no doubt be buoyed by his recent 258 in test cricket against the South Africans. David Warner - Australia The diminutive Aussie left-hander stands 5ft 7”, but size doesn’t prevent Warner from packing a powerful punch.
Semi-Final Stage Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st March sees the semi finals, taking place in Delhi and Mumbai respectively.
Final The final of this year's World Twenty20 is scheduled to take

Virat Kohli - India Kohli picked up the most runs in the last Twenty20 and will be primed for this year's tournament.
One of the outstanding players to watch out for and will be looking to maximize the support of the home crowds. Vice captain to MS Dhoni in the limited over forms of the game puts added pressure on Kohli’s shoulders.
Without question, Warner is one of the cleanest hitters of a cricket ball anywhere in the world. Expect to see an array of regular and not so regular strokes from this top batsman.
Should Kohli produce the goods again in this tournament he could easily cement his place as a genuine successor to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Conditions are likely to suit too, as Warner has racked up an amazing 83 matches for the Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad in his Indian Premier League (IPL) stints. During his IPL time he has averaged 34, with a strike rate of almost 140. AB de Villiers - South Africa The South African captain will undoubtedly carry many of his countryman's hopes as they chase a drought breaking limited overs title. Holding the record for the fastest 50 (16 Balls) and 100 (31 Balls) in One Day International (ODI) history, de Villiers is definitely no slouch with the bat. Experience in the IPL will be important as he looks to emulate the form that saw him smash 133 from 59 balls for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kane Williamson - New Zealand Seen by many as the No.1 limited overs batsman, it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the Twenty20 format of the game. Williamson will need to fill some pretty big shoes, with the retirement of Kiwis legend Brendon McCullum. Power and placement are a large part of Williamson's game, in many respects he plays a more classical cricket than McCullum. When the pitches start turning, his off-break bowling style might well prove to be of immense use to the New Zealand cause.
Watching the Action Keen cricket fans will be able to watch the action at a whole host of top sporting venues in Pattaya. Matches are scheduled to be played either in the afternoon or evening, local time. Thankfully India is only 1 Hour and 30 Minutes behind the time in Thailand, making it very easy for us to watch the cricket as it unfolds. Pattaya’s best sports bars will no doubt be vying for custom during the tournament. Punters can expect a combination of some great sport and beer, while cheering on their team.

Honda LPGA Thailand 2016
L
exi Thompson raised the winner’s trophy at the Honda LPGA Thailand 2016 played at the Siam Country Club Old Course from 25 February through 28 February. This marked the 10th anniversary of the event which has been held at the same venue since 2009. The tournament featured some great golf on a great course over the four days. The strong field featured 9 of the top 10 ranked ladies golfers in the world who came from around the globe including South Korea, Japan, Australia, China, Spain, Taipei, Sweden, South Africa, Germany, France and of course Thailand. The obvious star was Lexi Thompson who set the pace with an opening round of 64 - which ended up being the equal low round of the tournament. In the second round, Lexi could only manage a level par 72 and at the halfway mark she was in a three way tie at the top of the leaderboard alongside Q Baek and Jessica Korda. In the third round however, Lexi decided that she liked carding a round of 64 so much that she did it again and stormed to a 4 shot lead heading into the final round. Playing in the final grouping alongside Ms Thompson and defending champion Amy Yang, In Gee Chun of South Korea made a valiant attempt to catch Lexi opening her final round with three straight birdies before making bogey on the fourth. She would enter the back 9 trailing by just 2 shots and it looked like we might be in for an exciting finish. Ms Thompson had other ideas and calmly made eagle on the par 5 10’th extending her lead to 3 as In Gee could not keep pace with her birdie. The par 4 11’th hole was a turning point. I had a great vantage point near the green and unfortunately watched as In Gee scalded her approach shot through the back of the green and was faced with a difficult up and down to save par. She made what looked to be a par saving chip, but missed the short putt to drop a shot and fall back to 4 shots behind. Over the final 7 holes Lexi did not drop a shot and managed to pick up a further birdie on the par 4 15’th. In Gee had a roller coaster final 7 holes. Her final par of the day came on the par 3 12’th and over her closing 6 holes she turned in 3 birdies, 2 bogeys and one double on the par 4 17’th hole. In the end Lexi Thompson won by 6 strokes over runner up In Ge Chun, and in so doing secured her 7’th career victory on the LPGA tour. Not to be forgotten, Jessica Korda fired a closing round 64 of her own to move up 8 slots finishing equal third with defending champion Amy Yang, a total of 7 shots off the pace. Of special note, 2016 featured the first ever winner of a brand new Honda Accord at the LPGA Thailand. Despite the prize being on offer since the inception of the event, this was the first time any player has managed to seal the deal. The honour went to Xi Yu Lin of China. On Friday she celebrated her 20’th birthday and on Saturday she won a car. Her tee shot looked a bit long as it landed some 35 feet past the hole. However it was perfectly placed and managed to catch the slope just right and rolled its way down and straight in to the cup - never looked like

missing. Xi Yu Lin managed a respectable 10’th place finish for the tournament, so all in all not a bad weekend for the young golfer from China. From the spectator point of view, the tournament could not have been better. In addition to the world class field, every aspect was well thought out and executed. Entrance to the course was simple and efficient. The area near the clubhouse had all the amenities you would expect and then some. Off to one side there were various sponsor booths with the added bonus of fans blowing cool mist for the visitors. There were golf coaching clinics available for the youngsters, and a giant screen TV showing the action for those that were not wanting to venture out on the course or merely taking a break and enjoying some refreshment. Both Thai and Western food was available and at a reasonable price. There was a beautifully laid out “Thai Food” stall offering all range of noodle and rice dishes. I particularly liked that everything was one price (90 baht) and you paid in advance to someone whose sole job was to handle the money. This of course meant that those preparing and serving could provide a high level of hygiene which is a welcome sight. There was also a kindly gentleman helping those unfamiliar with the process to select from the vast array of choices. I sampled noodle soup with pork and it was delicious with a generous serving and the pork was succulent. Later in the day I chose a chicken and mushroom pie that was served warm and very tasty Every thirst could be quenched with almost every imaginable beverage available. And to their credit, even toward the end of the day there was still plenty to choose from. Most importantly there were adequate toilet facilities not only near the clubhouse but out on the course as well! The great thing about attending a golf tournament is that you can choose to enjoy it in the manner that best suits you. You can elect to stay near the main clubhouse, where you will also find the 1’st and 10’th tees as well as the 9’th and 18’th greens. Given the split tee format of the Honda LPGA, this ensures there will be live golf to enjoy here for most of the day.
You can also choose to wander on to the course itself with pretty much unrestricted access except to the actual playing area. You might choose to follow a particular group around or find a nice spot in the shade under a tree and watch as the field moves through the course. I chose one such spot near the 16’th green where I witnessed a terrific display of support for one particular group that featured 2 players from Japan. Initially there were about a dozen spectators who had similar ideas to mine, but as this group approached the green they were accompanied by a gallery of some 50 or more ardent followers providing encouragement and support. On completion of the hole, their entourage followed them to the 17’th tee. I found this particularly heartwarming as this was during the final round and the grouping was well out of contention. When watching a tournament live, I like to take the opportunity to see some of the action away from just watching the leaders. I decided to catch a glimpse on the final day of Thailand amateur Paphangkorn Tavatanakit. I caught up with her on the par 3 8’th hole (her 17’th due to the split tee start) She attacked the pin and nearly holed out but had to settle for a tap in birdie. The 11’th grade student from Bangkok finished in a tie for 42’nd place which is an excellent result for any amateur in a field of this strength. She just might become a real star in Ladies Golf for Thailand in the future. After nearly eight hours of entertainment, great golf and great hospitality it was sadly time to leave. In a final nod of approval to the overall experience, the police directing traffic did an excellent job of keeping things moving smoothly and helping make sure everyone could exit without any hassle. I am already looking forward to next year. This is really a “Don’t Miss” event in Pattaya and on my scorecard, I marked it as a hole in one.

T
hai motorsport is certainly on an upward curve as all the championships are growing in stature. That’s proved a real plus for Pattaya race fans as the top Thai drivers are using the latest stateof-the-art racecars as they slug it out for supremacy on the evergreen ‘local’ home of motorsport, Bira Circuit. However the leading Thai teams and drivers are now looking much further afield than Bira Circuit, Buriram’s brand new Chang International Circuit and of course the glittering annual street racing spectacular held just up the coastline on the streets of Bangsaen. One of the biggest Thai teams, B-Quik Racing, has really been spreading its wings over the last couple of years, entering the Sepang 12 Hours twice and coming away with two podiums finishes.
Last year though this team contested its first ever full international season, choosing the popular pan-Asian ‘Audi R8 Cup’. It was a highly successful debut too as Daniel Bilski won the R8 Cup Amateur Cup title. But more than just winning the prestigious title at the team’s first attempt, which was the first international title by a Thai team in many years, there were even more records broke, that’s because B-Quik Racing became the first ‘independent’ team ever to take part in the ‘R8 Cup’. So far, the ‘R8 Cup’ has been run entirely ‘in house’ by leading Asian race team Absolute Racing, which has been tasked with preparing all the cars on behalf of Audi. However in a strategy that will bring the ‘R8 Cup’ into line with other regional one make racing series, such as the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Audi is planning to permit individual teams to prepare cars – and during the 2015 season B-Quik Racing was in effect the ‘guinea pig’. “To be the first independent team in the Audi R8 LMS Cup was a great privilege,” says Daniel, who reckoned it was the logical step forward for B-Quik Racing to make. “With the team having had some experience already running the Audi for Henk in Thailand Super Series and the Sepang 12 Hours, it was a great opportunity to take the team’s exposure and experience with Audi to the next level.” Absolute Racing Team Owner Ingo Matter reckoned that inserting B-Quik Racing’s mechanics into the highly professional technical setup of the ‘R8 Cup’ for a full season would also expose them to all the available expertise on the Audi R8 LMS Cup and thus work as a two way street as they gained addition product knowledge and training. “I think it’s a good system for him also to let his mechanics come over and integrate into the whole team,” says Ingo – whose Absolute Racing concern also runs private teams inside PCCA as well as the Bentley factory supported GT3 cars in Asia. “They learn more about the car and have all the people involved with the car very easily accessible because everyone is there, it helps everyone get up to speed together.”

MOTOR TRADER Ingo was also very pleased with how the new ‘team’ bedded into the ‘R8 Cup’ so smoothly and quickly. “It was quite interesting in the beginning to see them out of their comfort zone coming to Zhuhai more or less by themselves but I think after just the first day they were fully integrated and enjoyed the experience,” Ingo adds. Everyone quickly rallied round on the ground, says Daniel. “To see how the B-Quik technical team were welcomed, supported and treated as a part of the series was fantastic, and a real credit to the series,” he says. “If we ever needed extra hands, for example after our qualifying dramas in Japan, there were plenty of Absolute Racing and Audi personnel jumping in to help, without a second's thought. It was a fantastic sporting environment, with a genuine sense of camaraderie, all run at a top-class professional level.” “And it wasn’t just the technical assistance,” Daniel adds. “For example, being Thai and not having travelled to Japan before, the boys weren’t really prepared for the cold weather in Japan, yet within minutes of our arrival at Fuji Speedway, they had more Audi Cup jackets, hats and jumpers than I did, courtesy of the management and teams.” B-Quik Racing’s owner, Henk Kiks, was also delighted with how the year of many ‘firsts’ had shaken out. “I’m very proud of how my boys did in the Audi Cup,” he says. “They have all come straight into motorsport from a background of working in the B-Quik stores, as have all the staff on the team, and most of them go back after the races to their store positions apart from a small core that remains with the team, so they have all had to learn about motorsport together from scratch. “The Audi Cup put our mechanics, who have so far only been used to racing in Thailand, apart from a couple of forays to Merdeka, straight into a very well organised and professional environment with all the best international standards,” he continues. “That they were able to prepare the car to run with complete reliability all season and win the championship really says a huge amount about the solid structure we have put in place at B-Quik Racing over the last few years. It also demonstrates that the high standards that we demand off our technician at every point in the B-Quik chain provides a great platform that staff can then use to go onto working in such a competitive and pressurised environment as international motorsport.” Last word to Daniel. “To win the AM Cup Driver’s title in B-Quik’s first venture into the Audi Cup was a glowing testament to the team’s ability to adapt to a new environment and the speed with which everybody learned,” he says. “It was also an endorsement for the series, which didn’t hold back with opportunities for the team to learn and grow. “I am extremely proud to have won the title last year, and equally proud to have done it with the first-ever independent team,” Daniel concludes.

By Kevin Cain Pattaya Personalities was formed to highlight the rich depth of humanity that exists here in Pattaya, and this month Ken Minahan is our featured personality. For those of you that are music lovers you will be aware of the name Ken Snowman Minahan as he has been part of the Pattaya Music Scene scene for well over a decade, actually closer to fifteen years. Snowman has been rocking clubs and stages with his fantastic Blues guitar from Chicago to Pattaya Beach and many places in between. But where did his love of music start from, and how did he end up in Pattaya? Ken was born and grew up in Chicago where his earliest memories of really starting to listen to music was on Sunday morning after church, down on Maxwell Street.
“ They had what is now called a Flea Market and all the shop owners would have their wares out on the street. They would also provide a space and electric for Blues musicians to perform for tips and help promote business.”
and fresh playing and soon he was touring regularly and playing live gigs for a living.
Artists like Muddy Waters, Big Joe Williams and the Wolf with the original Butterfield Band were amongst the great Blues players that Ken watched and listened to jamming at Big John's in his formative teens. Then Ken started developing as a guitarist and was soon getting attention for his innovative
Relocating to California in his mid twenties he found getting work as a guitarist increasingly difficult . Saturday Night Fever had just been released and Disco was sweeping the USA and Europe. Good live gigs were becoming increasingly difficult to get and now DJ's and dance floors were exploding onto every major town and city. After a period of exhausting touring he joined a Vegas showband purely to survive and earned a very lucrative living playing lounges for the gambling fraternity. However, this gave him a perfect opportunity to learn from great Chicago Blues players and stunning headliners from Vegas. In 1986 Ken was on the move again and relocated, this time with his showband to Miami Beach. He was returning to his first and greatest love and formed the Miami Beach Blues Band playing in the new clubs popping up in the developing South Beach area. It was here that he met Piano Bob Wielder and the duo instantly connected and formed a duo to play pre WW2 Blues. By 1992, Ken and Piano Bob were collecting award after award for their brilliant live performances which culminated in sweeping the board at the International Blues Competition in Memphis the same year, the most notable award being the B.B. King “Lucille” award. Then in 2001 Ken decided to take some time off and planned a three week holiday to Thailand. It was during his first week in Bangkok that his love for Asia started and at a suggestion of a friend he found his way down to Jomtien and the sea.He cites this period of his life as; “Being orchestrated by a higher being” By this he meant that during his stay in Jomtien that divine intervention took a hand. He stumbled across a job playing music in a band and a place to live. He even took his latest CD into a studio to get copied and was offered a part time job two days a week playing in the studio.

EXPAT LIVING Thus Ken became a regular musician at Pattaya's famous Blues Factory and stayed for 11 years, previously unheard of, until it's sad demise a couple of years ago. Again fate took a hand and Peter Windgasse who was a regular customer at the Blues Factory put a suggestion to him.It was the formation of a new Blues Cafe in fashionable Pratumnak with an edit to play quality live music seven days a week.
So now we have returned to the current day and find Snowman still living in Jomtien, playing class Blues guitar at Mood Blues Cafe. He is enthusiastic about his current three piece band the Blues Machine that incorporates himself on guitar, Lek on bass and Oi playing drums with the addition of vocalist Jowel and occasional keyboard player Nicky. Almost the complete band from the Blues Factory. Finally Ken sips his tea and leans back in his chair. The reminiscing has bought back beloved memories of his past and a huge grin lights up his face. We have been talking in Sketchbook just across the road from where he lives. “Sometimes I teach guitar here” he proffers to a question I have not yet thought to ask. “The atmosphere is very creative and open,” we then continue to talk for another hour or so. It was the first time I had met Ken and I was transfixed by the casual way he imparted his life story. He mentioned dozens of world famous Blues musicians that he had met along the way without even a hint of boasting or name dropping. Finally our interview came to an end, although it could have easily of lasted a further two hours, I shook Ken's paw like hand and imagined who else had also done that. Pattaya has so many people that contribute to the community and Ken has certainly as far as I am concerned, changed Pattaya for the better for sharing his life with us. I hope Snowman continues to strut his stuff on the stage in Pattaya for another 15 years and delights us all with his fabulous playing. If you want to catch Ken Snowman Minahan then check out Mood Blues Cafe on Soi 6 in Pratumnak, where there is plenty of parking space and no need to venture into town. The band play Fri-Sun weekly and Mood is closed on a Monday. Details on their website : www.moodpattaya.com

Bankers and Greed If you ask working people what profession is synonymous with greed, 9 out of 10 will say bankers. If you ask working people what profession is synonymous with greed, 9 out of 10 will say bankers and it is easy to understand why they have acquired this label. Many of the Western World’s workers, especially in Greece are facing up to and wondering what cuts they can make to help them and their families survive the massive social welfare cuts and tax rises brought about mostly by bank excesses and indeed their own southern lifestyle.
20 years later this bank is threatening his lifestyle. So much so he thinks he may have to return to the UK and go on social welfare. Why? Well because he doesn’t have 25,000 Stg on deposit in his account, they are charging him 10 pounds a month surcharge.
At the same time the banks even now a few years after the bail out are trying to hide the bonuses they are paying out at the end of the financial year and insisting that if they don’t pay them many of their top staff, for instance in the UK, will emigrate. Most people I know would line up to put them on the plane along with all the rest of the undesirables. Earlier this week I caught up with an old friend. Now approaching his eighties Hendrik opened an offshore bank account with HSBC back in 1996. It cost him 10 pounds sterling at the time. For quite a few years he managed to live modestly in rented accommodation and had his pension paid every month into his HSBC account. This bank is threatening his lifestyle. So much so he thinks he may have to return to the UK and go on social welfare. Why?

The fat cats at the bank would probably laugh at people who cannot afford to pay The fat cats at the bank would probably laugh at the people who cannot afford to pay their surcharge but for many elderly pensioners living in the Kingdom, they know that ten pounds can buy them lunch or dinner for a week here. On top of the appreciating baht this may well be the last straw for many.
Issue 185 | MARCH 2016
What really intrigued me was the subtle attempt by the bank to blackmail customers into using their investing banking arm.
“You won’t need to pay 10 pounds a month if you use us to invest your lump sum” they say, but their sales literature probably doesn’t mention the downside. If you have 100,000 pounds or dollars and that is the only money you have, they will be happy to send a youth from the Isle of Man to give you “Financial advice”. Next year do you really believe they will fly someone to consult with you for a few hours when there is no scope for earning further commission? Next year when you would like to discuss your portfolio performance do you really believe they will fly someone to talk to you for a few hours when there is no scope for earning further commission? Plus the likelihood is that their advisers will be pushing their own products which will rob you of the choice of independent advice. Don’t get me wrong here. I have no gripe personally with HSBC nor have I ever had any dealings with them. I’m talking about all multinational banks. We, the small investor are only a number.

I’ve been talking in these articles for years about using a local broker. Make sure they are committed to Thailand and are people of substance. By that I mean they should have lived here for at least five years and ideally own at least one property. I used to say make sure they have a professional certificate in investing but since most of the crooked merchant bankers are dripping in MBA’s I’ve stopped saying that. There’s a word starting with W that rhymes with bankers. There’s a word starting with W that rhymes with bankers but since I’m writing this on Sunday afternoon I won’t use it. david.thrifty@yahoo.com

If you are leaving Pattaya over the Songkran period it may be a good idea to consider the following customs and traditions especially if your travels take you to Temples, Shrines, Palaces or places of cultural importance: Remember as regards The Thai Royal Family Thais simply will not tolerate a lack respect towards any members of the royal family - past or present. If you come from a culture like the UK where royals are often in the news and sometimes the subject of criticism be careful not to treat the Thai royal family in the same way. Criticism of them is against the law and taken very seriously. Buddhism is Thailand's national religion and it is very important for visitors to be respectful as far as this is concerned. For example you should always dress appropriately when entering a temple or religious shrine which generally means shorts, bikinis, tops that show bare arms short skirts that show legs or generally dirty and unkempt attire will be considered inappropriate. In some of the larger temples guards may actually forbid you from entering if you are dressed inappropriately, At the Sanctuary of Truth for example you will have to hire a sarong before being permitted to enter. Whereas at smaller temples there may just be a sign at the entrance with pictures and crosses alongside advising what not to wear Buddhist Monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman or accept anything a woman might offer. If a woman wants to give something to a monk it must first be given to a man, or put on a piece of cloth. The monk will then drag the cloth to him before picking the item up. Likewise a monk will not shake a man's hand - that type of contact is forbidden. Monks travel on public transport and require the same respect there as they would receive at the temple. If a bus or train is crowded do not hesitate to give the monk your seat. Often special seats are allocated for monks only - don't sit in them! Buddha Images are sacred, whatever size or condition. You should never climb on a Buddha image and be careful

By Belinda Wilson about taking photos - some images are so sacred that if you do take photographs you may be asked to leave. Also when seated in front of a Buddha image you should cross your legs never sit with your feet pointing at the Buddha as this is considered an act of sacrilege. The purchasing of Buddha heads and especially the transportation of them out of the country is frowned upon. The Head is regarded as as the highest part of the body and touching someone's head, for example a pat on the head, is entirely unacceptable. The Feet are regarded as the lowest part of the body and you should not point at things with your feet and certainly not point the soles of your feet towards anyone Shoes should be taken off before you enter someone's home and especially when entering a temple. When Greeting, Thais will generally not shake hands, instead they 'wai' - a gesture made by placing your hands together in front of you and bowing a little. Generally, you should not wai to a child and a younger person should wai to an older person first. A little more leeway may be afforded to foreigners however if you do make the effort Thais will appreciate your participation of this practice. Shouting and Shows of Annoyance In Thailand is frowned upon, whatever the situation. There may be times when you face frustrations but, do so quietly a calmly. Shouting and showing annoyance are considered signs of a lack of discipline and may lead the Thai you are talking to try to help you 'save face' by smiling and even laughing to defuse the situation. For westerners in particular, this reaction may exasperate so it is simply best not to get angry as usually things will work themselves out much better if you can avoid it. Drugs should not be taken or traded in as Thailand is trying to eradicate unlawful drugs entirely. Clubs and places of entertainment are sometimes raided and people made to give urine samples. If you test positive the penalties can be harsh and trading in drugs may lead to decades in prison. Kissing, cuddling and similar displays of affection are frowned upon in public - especially amongst older Thais. Younger Thais are unlikely to be as shocked, but generally Thais are shy people. Smoking and Dropping Litter in the street is illegal and may carry a fine. Do not purchase wild animals whether protected or not. Aside from the moral issues, punishments are very harsh. Also beware anyone coming up to you to ask if you wish to purchase gems, gold, jewellery or other such items. Beware, often people get caught up in purchases of items at entirely inflated prices because they are told they can sell these items at a profit in their home countries. Remember if it looks too good to be true generally it is ! Â

I
By Neil Hutchison
Babysitting
have a confession to make: I don’t like children. It’s not that I wish them any harm, as I have no ill will towards any of God’s creatures, it’s simply that I have zero tolerance for anyone under the age of eighteen. Some people have argued, “But you were once a child yourself,” but so far no older relative has been able to show me any proof. They claim all photographic evidence of my childhood was destroyed by fire after my infamous ‘matches experiment’ in 1960. Sure, I have children of my own and have always loved them dearly. I remember when my first child was born. I left the pub just in time to make it to the hospital to see the nurse bringing a little bundle of rags towards me. The nurse smiled and showed me the reddish prune inside the bundle. “Yes, very nice,” I said. “Now take it away and bring it back when it turns eighteen.” Australian nurses have no sense of humour. Neither do Australian wives when Australian nurses blab to them about their husband’s innocent slip of the tongue. Now that my kids have turned into fine upstanding adults, I find I can communicate with them much more easily. In the adult world I can share a beer and a boys’ night out with my son and have sensible conversations with my daughters. Two years after my youngest daughter was born, I discovered what was causing it. I was straight off to a fertility clinic to receive the kindest cut of all, putting any future fatherhood off the agenda forever. Many people have subsequently told me this was the finest thing I could have done for mankind. Bless their hearts. But this brings me to the point of the story. Whereas I could no longer be held responsible for bringing another child into the world, it did not stop other people from wanting to share their own progeny with me. After my wife and I separated, I began ‘seeing’ another lady. She was wonderful, divorced but had one problem in the form of an 8-year-old son who had been diagnosed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). That is a fancy politically correct term for ‘uncontrollable brat’. Being a firm believer in the tenet that children should be seen and not heard (and the less seen the better), I could not adjust to her giving in to his every whim, tantrum and demand. Rightly or wrongly, I wanted him to be shown discipline while she was resigned to doing anything for peace and quiet. I saw the writing on the wall (coincidentally, there was a lot of writing on the walls of her home courtesy of the brat getting hold of felt-tipped marker pens) and knew the day would come when she would overrule my disciplinary measures with the words, “You’re not his father!” End of relationship.

PATTAYA TRADER
In Thailand some years ago, I found a wonderful lady who never indicated a desire to have children with me. At around the same time, another Australian guy fell in love with my girlfriend’s elder sister. (We tall, bronzed ANZACs certainly have a way with the ladies. Perhaps it’s our rugged good looks complemented by our caring and sincere nature.) Everything was fine with their relationship but for one fly in the ointment. She had a 7-year-old son who was being cared for by her mother. Unfortunately, while the happy couple were off in Australia, things fell apart in the village. Without going into detail, the anklebiter could not stay there anymore and I received a frantic phone call from Australia asking if I could help. Having spent a lifetime striving to do the right thing, of course, my answer was “yes.” Until other arrangements could be made I would do whatever I could to help out a desperate fellow countryman. I sent my darling up to the village to collect her nephew. They returned the same day and the ankle-biter was never any trouble. I don’t think I heard a sound out of him and began to wonder if he could actually speak. He immediately formed a friendship with one of our neighbour’s rug-rats and they sat and watched DVDs together. (I had to confiscate the porn ones!) As every foreigner in Thailand knows, the way to survive here is to let Thais take care of Thai matters. Therefore, I washed my hands of responsibility and let my girlfriend handle everything. I did hear a lot of whining and groaning from her. She was annoyed simply through the fact he was her constant shadow. She also had to get up early in the morning to feed him and I warned her to go about it quietly so as not to wake me up in the process. To a lady used to never crawling out of bed before midday, it was a reality check. And this was a good thing. If ever she were to be overcome by her wellhidden mothering instincts and wanted a child, all I needed to do was remind her about that. Now, approaching my twilight years and foolishly believing my child-rearing days were well and truly over, I have two grandsons. I quickly learned that, just as it is in Thailand, the true purpose of grandparents is for unpaid babysitting duties. I immediately let it be known that I do not sing nursery rhymes nor do I change dirty nappies. I expected each grandson to be quiet, not get up to mischief and to keep his room tidy. Surprisingly, this did not deter my children from declaring me their roving babysitter and sharing my time whenever they needed quality time away from ankle-biters. Strangely enough, I found it not such a bad job so perhaps I have mellowed in my old age. Perhaps I was a late bloomer and the nurturing instinct I lacked as a young man has finally surfaced.
