COVER STORY
PASTRAMI ON RYE AND AMERICAN PIZZA FACTORY THAILAND. Stephen Fry compared only visiting New York and LA instead of travelling across the breadth of America to a pastrami sandwich, in his recent book “More Fool Me”.
“How could anyone say they had eaten a Carnegie Deli pastrami sandwich if in fact they had only gnawed at the thin slices of rye on either end while the whole continent of meat lay untouched." He goes on to commend the virtues of the delicious New York fare and here in Pattaya we have our very own slice of America. Pastrami on Rye is described as an authentic American Deli offering Pastrami and Corned Beef . American Pizzas, pasta and Salads. Real NY Cheesecake and some of the best coffee to be found in town ! A real Pattaya success story. The eaterie that started out tucked away in a private house in a soi just off Jomtien beach road soon grew by reputation far exceeding every expectation and outgrowing its small location. People would travel all the way from the “Darkside” in search of the delicious pastrami sandwiches such as the Rachel: Pastrami topped with coleslaw, melted Swiss cheese and signature sauce. Or the equally delicious Reuben a corned beef sandwich with sourkraut and melted cheese. Often accompanied by enormous whole dill pickle and a really great potato salad the portions are certainly not for the faint hearted ! Soon the happy customers were able to expand their choices with fabulous American pizzas including deep dish Chicago options that you should allow a preparation and cooking time of around 35-45 minutes. Then after expanding into their new location a whole range of very reasonably priced breakfast options and delicious cakes and coffee. If you've yet to try it – please hurry along !

Pastrami on Rye & American Pizza Factory 315/163-164 THAPPRAYA ROAD JOMTIEN, PATTAYA RI 20150
After 8 months of hard work, sweat and BEERS... and a bunch of satisfied customers, we were able to open up our first location to the public. Soon after, dozens of new customers filtered into our restaurant daily, and it wasn't before long, that we had thousands of new followers on social media and hundreds more new customers ordering delivery, take away and dine-in sandwiches and pizzas. We wouldn't have been able to do what we have done so far if it wasn't for the hard work of a few special people.... and fantastic response we received from our faithful customers."
Open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 pm they will even deliver to your home if you phone them on 087 609 8770 "It's not easy to start a business in Thailand, let alone, run a business that is actually successful. Well, that's exactly the kind of crazy idea that we had in mind when we founded Pastrami on Rye & American Pizza Factory. Tucked away inside of a shop house, down a private soi off Jomtien Beach road, we set out to do what no body had ever achieved and what most people thought was impossible. At first, we had a basic menu of deli sandwiches and pizzas: Pastrami, Corned Beef, Reuben, Philly Cheesesteak, thin crust and pan style pizzas. Bristkets were brined a few at a time in plastic bins, Pastrami was smoked using a makeshift grill/smoker, and delivery was the only way you could get one of our sandwiches or pizzas...and that was only from 7pm til 10pm. I was working full-time as a graphic designer and my Dad was, well, retired and bored. We had been talking about starting up another restaurant again, ( our first venture didn't work out so well ) but we knew we had to do it right this time or don't do it at all.

Thai Temples for Dummies
Part III : Temple Taboos What to Do & Not Do in a Wat
The Kingdom of Thailand has long been celebrated for its tiny tuk-tuks, fabulous food, stunning shoreline, and for its palatial places of prayer. Most visitors and expatriates, in between tooling about in a tuk-tuk, feeding on foreign food, and basking on a breathtaking beach manage to squeeze in at least one, if not several trips to Thailand’s well heeled Wats … Oh right, “Wat” is the Thai title for each of the many Buddhist temples that are randomly scattered across the Land of Smiles. Rich in all things opulent, Thai wats have been blessed with a unique combination of astonishing architecture, awesome art, remarkable reliefs, and sculptures of a spectral, striking and superstitious nature. Because the word’s out that a wat is wondrous to behold, hordes of uninformed, unruly and often unkempt tourists descend on these sacred grounds to gape, gawk and gaze at the sumptuous surroundings, and – to snap the obligatory selfie or two needed to enhance one’s all important Facebook page. Regardless of their faith, foreigners of every stripe and persuasion are welcomed into Thai temples. Some however, are hesitant, intimidated, or insecure about this prospect because they’re uncertain as to whether or not a string vest and Speedos are adequate attire or considered to be a temple taboo. Exploring the grounds of a hushed and tranquil Thai temple for the first time can be a rewarding experience. This experience can only be enhanced if one does so without wittingly or unwittingly giving offense. Observing the following few rules that apply to temple decency and decorum should see one safely through the inaugural visit as long as one refrain from telling that “two Buddhist monks and a prostitute walk into a bar” joke while engaged in idle banter with a Buddhist monk.
Wat Wear
skirts are a must. In addition, gaudy garb, showy outfits, displays of wealth, as is the color black, which is worn only at funerals, are also all considered to be inappro priate apparel. It’s a serious sign of disrespect to enter any temple wearing shoes, so be sure to remove your flip-flops before crossing the holy threshold.
Temple Temperance Show some respect by switching off your mobile, removing hats, sunglasses, earbuds and footwear before entering any edifice. Get the chewing gum out of your gob, extinguish your cigarette, and lower your voice. It’s also wise to censor one’s language, and converse only about the things you’d want your dear old mum to overhear. This probably sound stupid, but don’t bring alcohol or snacks, don’t spit, or engage in public displays of affection, and don’t ever lose your temper or display strong emotions. Also, don’t point with your finger at things or people, and especially at holy relics or statues, as the Thais consider this to be extremely rude. Finally, because Buddhists value all life don’t kill any errant gnats, mosquitoes or other insects that may adversely affect your temple experience.
When it comes to temple togs, two rules of thumb spring to mind: modesty is much appreciated, and reverence and respect rule. Despite the fact that this nation’s naughty nightlife implies otherwise, Thailand is very conservative. This is especially so when wandering the grounds of a wat. Depending on the whereabouts and ‘rank’ of a particular temple, shorts and a tank top may be marginally acceptable. But in general, sleeveless shirts should be avoided. If the heat prevents the wearing of long trousers, ensure that your shorts reach your knees. Women should think in terms of non-transparent garments with a modest neckline. The sleeves, legs and hems of which should all terminate closer to the elbow and the ankle than the alternative. In the case of ‘high ranking’ and ‘royal wats’, long trousers and full length

Main Hall Manners Be sure to enter the main hall or shrine leading with your right foot. Step over not on the threshold and move away from the portal so as not to impede the flow of foot traffic. If you’re really serious, when entering a shrine do three prostrations or short bows with your hands folded while facing the alter. As a guest you should move along the right side of the temple and never walk in front of those who are bowing as this action represents deep reverence for Buddha. Never place Dharma materials (texts, books, etc.) on the floor or step on, over, or otherwise disturb them. Once inside, the highest ranking person is also the most respected and therefore will occupy the highest position. As such, when moving about the hall, do so in such a manner so that your head is never raised above his. Sitting with your legs outstretched is a sign of disrespect as is reclining. Sit cross legged or with your legs tucked underneath you, and ensure that your feet are not pointing directly at an alter, an image of Buddha, a monk, or another person. One’s feet should also never be raised higher than another person’s head. In the Land of Smiles, only the King and monks are not obligated to return a wai. Whether you’re inside a temple or a train station, failing to return the wai, Thailand’s polite prayer-like greeting, when the hands are placed palms together at chest level and the head is slightly bowed, is discourteous at best. Bot Behavior The area known as the Bot is the structure in which the temples most sacred Buddha images are housed. When within the Bot, top form demeanor is not only expected, it’s demanded. That means never raising one’s head above, pointing at, touching, or turning your back on an image of the Buddha. If you must indicate items within the Bot, do so by gesturing with your chin,

and always back away from the Buddha. Never photograph the Buddha during worship or without first seeking permission. And never ever climb on, pose for silly selfies, or otherwise disrespect sacred religious objects and the Buddha.
Donation Decorum Although donations are neither required nor expected, virtually every Buddhist temple is grateful to the worshipers and visitors who express their appreciation in a remunerative way. This is generally accomplished when a token of one’s portable wealth is deposited in one of the many prominently displayed donation boxes. If you snapped a few selfies or otherwise enjoyed your wat walking, why not discreetly drop Thai currency in the form of a 20, 50, 100 or note of a higher denomination into the alms box as you depart.

ADMIRILLICA A TRUE PIRATE ADVENTURE
Growing up in southern California only two hours from Disneyland and having family members that worked at the famous theme park, free passes came my way on more than one occasion. I grew up eating at the Pirates of the Carribean Restaurant, reading books about pirates, and acting out life as a wench at the Renaissance Faire which was pirate history central. I lived in Vegas and got to see the show at Treasure Island, which was all pirate and glitter.
I played a videogame called Pirates of the Burning Sea on the PC which was a MMORPG game allowing one to control pirate ships and battle against the mighty Navies of the time periods from the 1700s to the 1900s. As an English Teacher I had a complete pirate play set so I could teach all the relevant vocabulary, such as buried treasure, map, and X marks the spot. I suppose you can say I am a pirate fanatic. As you can imagine from my history I was more than thrilled to get the assignment to review the Admirillica Pirate Ship. The Admirillica Pirate ship is everything I hoped it would be and more. It will truly transport your to another world. Start the adventure at the Bali Hai Pier, just look for the pirates playing in the crowds as they mark the initial meeting point. They will then guide you to the deck where the speed boat will meet you to take you out to the ship.

You pull up to the ship while the sun is setting and the moon is rising, and get these fabulous shots of the ship like this one! Play with the ships wheel, check out the replica cannons, dare your friends to get into the crows nest by climbing the ropes. I want to do this so bad I can taste it but not until I charter the ship for a personal party, which I plan to do in the near future. Climb aboard the mighty ship and instantly feel the mighty ship steady under your feet. The wood is gorgeous, dark hard wood, the bathrooms are lovely facilities befitting any captains quarters that was accustomed to entertaining royalty. The furniture is all hand made hardwood furniture from Thai masters that appears as if it has grown out of the wood of the ship. This would be a KILLER VENUE FOR A WEDDING AND RECEPTION!
Issue 175 | MAY 2015
There is a lounge area on the top deck of the three deck ship, filled with cushiony lounge chairs that are water proof so wipe down easily after the rains that run through the harbour on a regular basis. Everyone is served a welcome drink of fresh fruit juice over ice and a shot of Sangsom, a great blended rum made right here in Thailand. The buffet spread was a great mix of Spaghetti, fried chicken, salad bar, rice both jasmine, and fried, hot dogs, hamburger steak, stir fried vegetables, several types of soup, I had the cream of mushroom and it was hearty. There were other fried goodies like spring rolls, and crinkle cut fries, and several desserts. Water is served with dinner and beer, wine and cocktails are available for extra, but the prices are totally reasonable, 80-100 baht for a beer, etc. After dinner is served, relax for a bit then the pirate show begins, juggling, bar tricks, dancing, and full on dramatic production by the crew will delight audiences. The show is interactive and the more the audience participates the better the show gets. Take lots of pictures, go along with the activities, and just, EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY, like any good pirate. Now where is my rum!?

ATV Pattaya Jungle Adventure Tour - Review Nothing says team building quite like getting down and dirty with your co-workers. Now since we live in Pattaya I know what you are thinking but that is not where I am going with this. ATV Jungle Adventures Pattaya where they rent ATV’s and motocross bikes. We got out to their location which is north and east of Pattaya a bit out in the boonies. When we first pulled up it was a mighty sight with all the bikes and quads lined up waiting for us. We arrived about half an hour before our start time so we could get situated. They provide a helmet, gloves, and a long sleeve shirt and some helmets are fitted with Go Pro cameras. Our group of six had two of the four cameras given to the larger group of fourteen. We chose the 28km tour suitable for all skill levels. This is a team building event so everyone has to have a little fun. They have two different tours, the short one we chose and there is a VIP tour that is over 40km and the motocross bikes are available for that one. They have four different levels on the VIP tour depending on skills so if you really want to get down and dirty and get your adrenaline rush on go for the VIP!! I can not wait to go back with a smaller group of friends and get crazy in the sand. The guides were awesome, we had three of them and one spoke really great English. One guy would ride ahead and snap still pictures of individuals coming around corners and going through mud puddles, they really hook you up on the photos. It is pretty much impossible to have a camera out on the tour unless you are stopped for a water break. The guides were cool with speeding up the pace and pushing the group, they let those of us that were comfortable have free reign to spin donuts and other fun things as long as we behaved when we were going near residences. I love to go off road and I hate just going around a little track. The

28km tour really gets you out and about and gives everyone time to get comfortable on the ATV. One of the greatest things that came out of the trip is the fact that several of us from different departments are now planning a trip on our own. Without this team building exercise I don’t think the group that is forming up to go next time ever would have come together. ATV Pattaya Jungle Adventure Tours is fun, affordable, and I will be going back again.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR WEEKEND TRIPS If you are just on an overnight or weekend trip here are a few helpful tips to ensure you keep your packing light. Firstly toiletries: these can really weigh down your luggage – especially if you only have a carry on or overnight bag that you will be mostly carrying yourself. Yes its easy to find travel size versions of most of your favourite items and you can hope that your hotel or guest house will supply you with shower gels, shampoo etc. – but what if they don’t?
out running around trying to find a 7/11 for something you’ve forgotten or looking for clothing available in your size when you are in a far off retreat ! Happy Travelling!
I’ve found that even the best hotels often leave a shampoo in the bathroom but rarely any hair conditioner. So if you know you are travelling in the near future leave a little remaining in your toothpaste tube, your shampoo and conditioner bottles – and take these with you. They obviously won’t be as heavy as full bottles and cheaper than buying travel size items with the added bonus of giving you more space when you throw them away for any small gifts or souvenirs that you may pick up on your way back. Think before you pack of what you will be doing on your trip – especially important when it comes to footwear – flip flops for the beach, sensible shoes if any climbing or hiking is involved and always, always make a list! This is especially helpful if you have other people to consider partners or children, in which case you can plan for them as you would yourself – underwear, day-wear, beach/activity wear night clothes, toiletries. Also if you make your lists out in advance you can be sure to have everything laundered and ironed in time. It may seem romantic to just grab a bag and throw a few items in but a little planning and preparation will help you avoid wasting time on your days

Khao Yai: Days of Wine and Khmer Kings When it comes to wine — both the making and the drinking — Thailand doesn’t immediately spring to mind, right? So, take a drive to Khao Yai and uncork a vintage surprise, followed by an Isaan chaser.
tempranillo. He declaims a few facts and mysteries about plonk, and
My friend Jose came home to find his Thai wife and three friends drinking Coca-Cola and something red. The “something red” was a Barossa Valley shiraz that Jose had jealously guarded for a special occasion. And here it was, being drowned in Coke and downed in shots like ten-baht lao khao. His options were simple: divorce, or some wine education for his beloved? After counting to ten he chose wisely. And where better in Thailand to mix wine and wisdom than in Khao Yai, around three hours drive northeast of Bangkok, where several boutique vineyards are producing surprisingly good “new latitude” wines? (The downside surprise is that, thanks to high Thai taxes, these wines are cheaper in Europe — which is probably how Thailand’s big brewers and distillers like it.) Khao Yai, with its huge national park, and the nearby city of Khorat have become in the recent years a decompression zone for many Bangkokians. Their increasing numbers here have seen the spread of golf courses, condos and resorts, as well as winery tours with cellar door sales. “I’m in charge of hostilities,” booms rotund German wine marketer Heribert Gaksch as we gather for a tasting at the pioneering PB Valley Winery. It could be a “Don’tmention-the-war” moment except that the jocular Herr Gaksch knows his hospitalities from his hostilities as well as he knows his cab savs from PB Valley’s excellent

then uncorks several prime examples — exactly what we’re here for. Our next stop is the family-run GranMonte vineyard in Asoke Valley near the foothills of Khao Yai. Wisu Lohitnavy founded it in 1999 despite knowing almost zip about viticulture. “My only background in wine was drinking it,” he admits. After a quick tram tour of GranMonte’s high-tech vines with their microclimate monitors and computerized watering, we meet the head winemaker. She is none other than Wisu’s talented daughter Nikki, the first (and so-far, only) Thai to graduate in Oenology and Viticulture, with honours, from Adelaide University. In the tasting room Nikki leads us through a sampling of four of her best wines, of which the chenin blanc viognier and the syrah rose are my favourites. How popular, I ask her, is wine tourism in Thailand, traditionally the domain of Chang-Singha-Mekhong quaffing? GranMonte alone has 60,000 annual cellar door visitors, says Nikki, with some 10,000 of those joining a winery tour.

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS After a spectacular Thai lunch in the winery restaurant it’s time for us to sober up and press on to explore Khao Yai National Park, Thailand’s first such park. Winding high into the mountains on a truck we head to Haew Narok waterfall. It’s a blasting, double-step cataract, especially after rain, that vomits off a 50-metre cliff. The name translates aptly as “Chasm of Hell”, except that Hell was never so wet. Just standing by its flank means we’re soon misted with spray. The main city up this way is Khorat, aka Nakhon Ratchasima, the gateway to Isaan, and it’s here that you feel the distinct difference from tourist hubs like Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. This is down-home Thailand just being itself, minus the sky bars and hi-so’s, medi spas and go-go’s, not to mention that demeaning stain on “Thainess”, unofficial double-pricing for foreigners.
A lunch fit for a Khmer king, of roast duck and fried fish on betel leaf, plus coconut pancakes, inspires us to push on towards Buriram. En route is our last Khmer temple, Phanom Rung, a lesser-known Angkor-era gem that sits on the rim of an extinct volcano. There are no crowds, no touts and a Shiva clutching fresh marigold garlands stands tall as the resident deity. Like Toto, we know we’re not in Kansas, or Pattaya, anymore.
My friends with the dominant must-shop gene are soon drawn to Khorat’s night market. And why not? The prices are “same-same for farang”, there’s no pressure, and the snacks are delicious — waffles, sticky rice and mango, and khanom krok coconut rice hotcakes. Next day our obsessive consumers head to Palio mall, a slice of Tuscany in Thailand whose clock tower and fountain sit pretty but anomalously amid the Isaan hills. When Sienna meets Siam naturally the mall’s colour scheme is all-sienna. The rolling shopping raid continues, this time with authentically Thai ware like ceramics from Dan Kwian village and silks from Pak Thong Chai. Added to the wines, our excess baggage is now exceedingly excessive. Thailand is famous for its temples with glittering stupas and gilded Buddhas, but this region has something dramatically different: a royal highway of 10th century Khmer Hindu temples that runs from Cambodia’s Angkor Wat down to Isaan. Fifty kilometres outside Nakhon Ratchasima we come to the most famous of them, Phimai Historical Park, whose temple complex looks like a mini-Angkor. Its thousand yearold stones, grained like petrified wood, form courtyards around a central tower, with all of it surrounded by moats and tranquil lawns.

Island Escapes from Pattaya
P
attaya, is all about the fun, craziness and endless possibilities often includes a drunken and wild night out... but sometimes you just need to get away from all the people. It can be difficult to find peace and quiet during any time of the year in Pattaya, readers shouldn’t fear as there are many options to escape the madness. Today we'll explore the 3 best islands around Pattaya city where residents will be able to find some quiet to recharge their party batteries.
“Definitely the least known of your options, Koh Si Chang offers the most traditional experience you can ask for.” Kho Si Chang Definitely the least known of your options, Koh Si Chang offers the most traditional experience you can ask for. Popular with Thai locals, this island has a very traditional feel, lots of temples, Thai restaurants offering the freshest seafood, friendly locals, and some hidden beaches that will keep you exploring this small and cozy island.
Getting there: An extremely accessible option for all Pattaya residents, all it takes to go to Koh Si Chang is getting to Siracha's main pier (Ko Loi Pier ). If you are driving in your own car just make sure to ask directions on how to get to this pier, once there you can park your car and take the ferry which leaves every-single hour. If you travel by bus (which you can catch at Pattaya's North Pattaya bus station) all you have to do is get off at Siracha by Robinson shopping mall and take a motorbike taxi to the Ko Loi Pier , just tell the taxis this in English, they will understand what you mean. Good For: Getting the 'real Thai experience', party seekers should stay away from this island as everything closes at around 10 PM. With it's tranquil street and lay-back feel, this island is perfect for those trying to escape the city and enjoy some quiet time by the beach. Couples and small families will find this island charming and extremely convenient given it's short distance from both Bangkok and Pattaya.

“Definitely the least known of your options, Koh Si Chang offers the most traditional experience you can ask for.”
Kho Larn Getting there: If you have lived in Pattaya for a while chances are you are already aware of this. Head to Bali Hi Pier where you’ll be able to purchase a boat ticket that will take you directly to the island. Each company will have different time schedules, don't worry too much about making it at a particular time, with so many boats leaving regularly, you won't have to wait longer than 40 minutes before getting on any one of them. Good For: This island has gone through heavy development in the past years, visitors can now find a huge range of guests houses,
hotels, restaurants and other common tourist facilities all over the island. This option offers many sandy beaches for those who like spending their time near the ocean.
Bad things to be aware of: Development has also meant this island is one of the most popular tours in Pattaya, so do expect hordes of tourists coming for the day (they generally start arriving in mass at around 10 AM, and leave by 6 PM).
Kho Samed Getting there: Go to Ban Phe Pier If you are driving by car, just search in Google for the term 'pattaya to ban phe' a map will pop up with the exact directions and GPS coordinates you need for a safe trip. Your other option would be to catch the minivans heading to Rayong, which you can do by heading to their main stop which is located on Sukhumvit road just past the Theppasit intersection on the opposite side of Sukhumvit from the Outlet mall. Once at the Rayong bus station, you will be swarmed by either taxi drivers or baht bus drivers offering a trip to the Ban Phe Pier (the baht bus should cost you less than 100 THB per person, the taxi driver will give you a price depending on how he is feeling that particular day.) Good For: People watching as most of the visitors to the island
will be Bangkok youngsters looking for an entertaining weekend out of the big city. So if you are a younger traveler looking to spend the weekend in a more natural setting (and still mingle with Thai people) this island is the perfect match for you.
Bad things to be aware of: This island does get packed during festive times thanks to the thousands upon thousands of Bangkokians that are used to coming here. Therefore booking a room in advance every-time you travel to Samed is a must.

GREEN PATTAYA Last month on the 23rd of April 2015 more street cleaning was carried out by: MAYs Urban Thai Dine Pattaya Crew together with Kasetsinn Group, City Hall Pattaya and Green Pattaya Foundation. Over six trucks of rubbish was removed in total collected by all the volunteers and Pattaya City, Kasetsin and Green Pattaya talked about the problem in this area and how best to solve the issue with dumping mainly coming from people wanting to avoid paying the city's garbage collection fees. After a very successful day it was decided that more such cleaning days would take place in the future and Green Pattaya will continue to update City Hall and Kastesin group by informing them of the problem spots as they find them.

In other countries, holding up your hand with your forefinger and thumb touching in an ‘OK’ sign can be extremely offensive, while declining gifts of food and drink can also be perceived as a sign of ill-breeding. Here are a few others to bear in mind: In the US, it’s common to beckon someone with a finger, but in other cultures this is how you’d address an animal and won’t win many friends. In the Middle East and most of Asia, the left hand is used for bathroom functions and so is not used to touch people or food. Touching a child on the head may seem like a sign of affection, but in Buddhist countries this is taboo. You may well want to take pictures of certain native groups you come across. Ask first though, they may expect money or not want to be a tourist object Hispanic and Asian cultures don’t always like making eye contact. Don’t take this as a sign that they’re not listening or attentive. Teaching abroad is as much about you learning about your students as it is your students learning from you. Embrace the differences and you’ll enjoy your time in Thailand.

Kâao Nĭeow Tú rian
Durian & Sticky Rice
N
ow that the Durian or Tú rian season, which runs from April to August in Thailand, is once again upon us; every time I pass by the pyramid of hard, horny husked fruits piled high at the local fruit market, I feel compelled to mutter, “Hail to the King”. By “King”, I actually mean the ‘King of Fruits’ as the durian is known here in the orient. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the Mangosteen happens to be the ‘Queen of Fruits’. Its taste is said to compliment that of the durian perfectly.
Durian the Fruit
Beloved by some and abhorred by many, the durians strong flavor and less than lovely, and pungent aroma, is described as divine by its devotees and as decaying gym socks (or worse) by its deriders. Love it or hate it, one thing that the ‘King of Fruits does not do is inspire indifference. For those who have yet to experience the unique bouquet of the durian, be advised that the raw fruit is so strong that it can linger for days on any surface with which it contacts, including your hands. That’s the reason why consuming this fruit has been banned on public transportation and prohibited in many public buildings throughout Southeast Asia! Rumor has it that durians harvested early in the rainy season are less likely to be odiferous, while those picked when the weather is hot and dry are purported to be mega pungent. If you’re not sure of the weather conditions at the time a durian was harvested, firm flesh is said to have a less overpowering fragrance. The aroma emanating from a soft fleshed durian is alleged to be much more malodorous.
Durian the Dessert
Leave it to the Thais to make rice, sticky or otherwise, a dessert staple. Of the half-dozen Thai rice based desserts that I’m aware of, Kâao Nĭeow Má-mûang or Mango and Sticky Rice has been universally proclaimed the perennial favorite by tourists Thais and expatriates. The few foreigners, who know of Kâao Nĭeow Tú rian, arguably consider that Thai treat to be the red headed bastard step child of the Thai sticky rice dessert family. But one shouldn’t be too hasty in pronouncing judgment on what many of the Thai people consider to be one of their nation’s most delectable desserts based solely on the smelly reputation of its key component. Believe it or not, all bias aside, when it’s prepared properly the durian dessert is indeed palatable if
www.pattayatrader.com
not delicious. Durian Dessert Experience Just like the mango version, durian and sticky rice consists of chunks of fresh durian instead of mango doused with a thick coconut cream sauce that’s served atop a bed of steamed sticky or glutinous rice. This dessert is comprised of three basic components: • Kâao Nĭeow: (sticky rice) which has been sweetened with coconut milk during the steaming process • Sòt Tú rian: (fresh durian) which has been cut into bite sized chunks and the seeds removed • Nám Gà-tí: (coconut cream) which has been simmered into a sweet syrup-like sauce along with pandan leaves, which are removed before serving, salt, white, and palm sugar Because a certain amount of assembly is required before consumption of kâao nĭeow tú rian can commence, knowing how to properly construct the dessert is crucial. After dishing out the desired portion of sticky rice, spoon a few fresh durian chunks onto the rice. Keep in mind that less is more, as a little bit of durian goes a long way. Adding too much of the fetid fruit might just tip the flavor scales from delectable to detestable. Next, cautiously ladle just enough coconut cream over the whole to lightly coat each grain of rice. Just as adding too much durian can destroy the dish, a tsunami of coconut cream can also overwhelm the flavors of the other components. To maximize the dessert’s overall flavor, connoisseurs recommend letting the rice steep in the coconut cream for a moment or two before mastication takes place.
Durian & Sticky Rice Taste
Describing the collective flavor of durian and sticky rice is like trying to describe the color magenta to a blind person … Something that’s not easily done. All I can say is that a good kâao nĭeow tú rian will contain a harmonious and perfect balance of the disparate: rice, durian, sweet, and salty flavors that are present in the dessert. Too much of one or not enough of another can spell complete disaster. But when the dessert has been perfectly prepared, one’s opinion of the much maligned ‘King of Fruits’ just might be upgraded from terrible to tolerable.

Market Negotiations for Dummies - Rhiannon Caldwell If you enjoy cooking Thai food and you are living in Thailand the most authentic flavors are going to come from the markets where the Thais shop. What is the difference you ask? Price and freshness are the two most obvious differences that I can think of. There are markets or “talad’s” around town, tented markets selling fresh vegetables, meats, and seasonings of all kinds. From the crazy sauces concocted from crabs for authentic som tam, to the pastes used to make curries such as “Paneng”, and “Gaeng Kiaw Wan”. There will also be booths filled with household wares, used electronics, clothing, shoes, handbags, crafts and any number of other things depending on the market you visit. Oh and baskets and buckets, Thai’s LOVE their baskets and buckets. Baskets and buckets are used for organizing things, catching water, rubbish bins, ice buckets and flip a bucket upside down and you have a stool. I love the Thai ingenuity. There are two markets near my home, almost equal distance, but one is toward Jomtien beach and the other is toward the railroad tracks. I live on Chaiyapruek 1 and the market on soi 7 has most of the things a Thai market has, although the spiciness of the prepared food is washed out for the farang pallet. I cook Thai food and that means I use a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs. I have found the herbs and vegetables purchased at the Soi 7 market to be 10-20% higher in cost and the shelf life to be about half what

| FOOD & DRINK the market on Chaiyapruek 1. I have literally had vegetables last over two weeks from the market, now that is FRESH! Market negotiations are part of life in Thailand and mastering the art of negotiation is not for the faint of heart. I have seen old ladies in the market go back and forth over the price for a live fish, the vendor, “roi neung baht” customer, “pbap seip baht” and so on and so forth until finally one comes to “gao seip baht” and the price is now agreed upon at 90 baht. Then you better watch because I saw the fish lady grab another fish but Yai was paying attention and she said, “mai dai, mai dai ow nee, ow noon!” (not that one, this one!”) both laughed and the agreement was kept. Thai’s will try to get one over on each other and an unsuspecting farang won't have a snowballs chance in hell if they are not on their toes. If you are going to negotiate you need to know a few key phrases: Vendor: ow arai ka/kab = what would you like? Customer: if you do not know the word for what you want simply point and say, “ow nee ka/kab” Customer: ow nee tao rai, OR ow nee gee baht? = How much is this? Vendor: roi neung baht = 100 baht pang maak = expensive mai pang = not expensive pang maak mai ow ka/kab = too expensive, no caw neung doi = give me one I don’t haggle much over the price of food especially at the Thai market for the Thais, prices are already so low that I feel like I am getting a fabulous deal, and I want to support the farmers direct. The “other stuff” vendors though is quite another story. When you are haggling over used goods it is a great time to stretch your negotiating skills to the limit. Make a big deal about how expensive it is and walk away, they will ask you how much you would pay and the games have begun. The more Thai you speak the easier it gets but it’s fun even when you speak none. Thais are masters with there little calculators and head nods and shakes are universal the world over. Do not be intimidated even if you are the only farang in sight. Thai’s are very friendly and are delighted when you try and speak their language no matter how badly you butcher the pronunciation. They appreciate the fact you are trying and that in and of itself usually qualifies you for a small discount.

Health Benefits of Tea
You may not know it, but not including plain water, Tea is the number one drink in the world. In fact Tea accounts for more than all soft drinks, Coffee, and alcohol put together! Tea originated in China around 2700 BC by the Emperor Shen Nung, now every country seems to have their own version of Tea. Tea can be obviously enjoyed as a drink, but it also has many medicinal properties as well. All Teas have caffeine and theanine which improve and heighten mental alertness and boost exercise endurance. They also contain antioxidants in the form of Polphenols that include flavonoids. These protect against cancer, Heart Disease, and clogged arteries. On a research visit to Tea Village in Pattaya we learned not all teas are the same, each Tea type has different properties and should be prepared differently White Tea: The lightest of teas, is both uncured and unfermented. It has the highest and most potent anticancer properties. Best brewed at: 65 to 70 °C (149 to 158 °F) Steep Time: 1-2 Minutes Green Tea: One of the most popular teas made from steamed tea leaves has a very wide range of health benefits in that it may interfere with growth of cancer cells, burn fat, reduce stress, and reduce risks of disorders such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and reduce risk of stroke. it has also been linked to improved bone mineral density. Best brewed at: 75 to 80 °C (167 to 176 °F) Steep Time: 1-2 Minutes Oolong Tea: Helps to lower Bad cholesterol levels. Best brewed at: 80 to 85 °C (176 to 185 °F) Steep Time: 2-3 Minutes Black Tea: With a strong flavor black tea is often used for Chai tea and other strong flavor teas. Black tea helps fight lung damage from smoking and lowers stroke risk. Best brewed at: 99 °C (210 °F) Steep Time: 2-3 Minutes Pu-erh Tea: This is the aged and pressed tea you will often see displayed in finer tea shops. It is often pressed into round “cakes” and will be date stamped to show location and season. It is then aged like a fine wine and its value and potency increase with age. It has a strong taste and is associated with weight loss and low cholesterol. Best brewed at: 95 to 100 °C (203 to 212 °F) Steep Time: Limitless

| HEALTH & WELLNESS This is by no means a comprehensive Tea listing as there are also flowering Teas, Herbal Teas, Rooibos, and many others. I have always enjoyed teas and was aware of many varieties, however while researching this article I made a trip to Tea Village in Pattaya. They are a boutique Tea shop offering a large variety of teas, cups, kettles, and anything else you would need to make your perfect cup of tea. They also offer tastings which I highly recommend. Not only did I get to try a variety of teas, they explained what each one was for, and the benefits and history of many of the teas. Starting with very light white teas and working our way to the very strong aged Pu-erh Teas with an almost bitterness and very distinct flavor. I recommend you try this yourself as you will be surprised with the flavor range and strength of the different varieties, and will most likely walk away with some new favorites. SPORT & LEISURE
Hi Folks, it is a real summertime bite, surface fish are few and far between, reports from Scott's guys onboard Captain Deang's boat tell the same. I am hoping that when winter comes around the bite will like years past! But I'm not holding my breath. The last three trips out with my fishing buddy he has caught three monster sized snipe, all about 29 inches long but the weight has been doubled that of same sized banded snipe, at one and a half pounds plus. They went well on light tackle, with the usual jumping and electric runs. Also we have been trolling for horse mackerel (bpla thoo) at all of our usual hot spots, Koh Krok north and south, and north of Koh Larn. The numbers have been down getting back to three years ago when the fish were scarce, but size wise the fish have been huge. In one trip trolling the north west point of Koh Larn we had 5 horse mackerel 13.5, 14, 14.5,
15, and 15.5 inches long with a combined weight of over nine pounds (four kilos). They all went well and the biggest took Frank over twenty minutes to bring to the boat on light tackle. That's longer than a 4 kilo queen fish would take on 40 lb line! I always measure my fish from the tip of the head to the end of the backbone. On another outing with Frank, he hooked a 24 inch snipe which jumped all over the sea and when he got close to the boat I had the landing net ready. But before I could net him he did one last jump and landed in the boat, never see that before. That day we started on a dropping tide and we got 23 fish. Then when the tide turned we went to our rising tide marks and none of them produced fish. Just how is it possible for the fish to be switched on and one hour later zip. During the three months I have been able to go to Koh Man Wichia only six times, due to threat of bad weather. In those six run outs
I have had two bites and no fish. It makes for a long trip back! The last time I went out the weather was forecast 50/50 early but clearing up well before I planned to go home. Witin an hour of arriving there were three thunderstorms, one west of the island, one over Sattahip and one over Jomtien. I watch in horror as all three joined up, I decided to stay on the anchor (letting a lot more rope out) rather than crossing the shipping lanes in visabilty which could be less than 30 meters. I saw a wispy cloud come down close to the surface about a mile south of me and start to rotate, it was going the usual path towards Jomtien that I have seen before. But you never know if it will change course, scary stuff, I put my lifejacket on over my waterproof cape. That was the four time in six years I donned my life jacket, it usually sits next to me not stored away. Scott's guy's on board with Captain Deang have had two trips when they had three big fish the 7 kg kilo queen fish(bpla sala) a smaller queen and a three pound barracuda. Far away from the heady days of over twenty plus big fish. But that's fishing, you never know what the day will bring. Latest news, Gabe with
www.pattayatrader.com
Scott's group got a rare John's snapper and had a sail fish on, it jumped times and on the last jump broke the line! And that was the only big bite of the day but what a fish, that's what makes for happy memories a sail fish jumping on the end of your line. I have been adjusting the height of my motor on the transom by two inches. I have not been happy with the speed I was getting 5.5 kts. The up shot is I have increased my speed to 6.3 knots, my fuel consumption has rocketed up and for the first time in six years I have cut my anchor rope with the prop, losing forty metres of rope, chain and the anchor! Everything in boating and fishing is comprise, a fast boat will roll on the anchor, a speed boat with high sides and canvas top will act like a big sail when you want to go drift fishing. A wide flat bottomed boat is a stable fishing platform but will slam in rough seas. Ah it's a tough life! The usual if you want any info on tackle shops, want your photo of the fish of the day published here, want to share info on what's being or not caught. 0808356945 or email plamafia5@aol.com. Have fun Roger.

Re Branding Pattaya - From Sexpat Tourism to World Class Sports Destination Pattaya “aka” Sin City is currently going through a major transformation. For many years Pattaya has had the unscrupulous reputation for attracting the man going through a midlife crisis, or the man going wife shopping. Pattaya has a huge number of Go Go bars, and streets such as Walking Street and the world famous Soi 6. As the visitors coming to Pattaya are changing, so are the goals of Pattaya as a future tourist destination. The current Mayor has been in power for seven years and has been working on an initiative to turn Pattaya into a family friendly world class sports destination. Evidence of this transformation is beginning to pop up throughout the city in the form of green projects to beautify the city and in bringing more events to the city. One has but to drive down Sukhumvit Road to witness Pattaya’s transformation. In January the underground tunnel project broke ground. In addition to the tunnel, a gorgeous green park is planned to replace the current road. The idea is to add greenery while alleviating traffic. Phratamnak Hill is going through a two year project as well with the end goal being an eco friendly tourist destination with landscaped parks, and picnic areas filled with butterflies, flora and fauna, and beautiful works of art such as sculpture. Pattaya is on the national agenda and is receiving support from the

SPORT & LEISURE Ministry of Tourism and Sports. To increase the draw for sporting events a new sports events complex will begin construction later in 2015. This new venue will provide grounds for extreme sports such as BMX, and skateboarding competitions. The beginning of 2015 has already seen tennis tournaments with international stars, Professional and Amateur golfing tournaments, The Thai Invitational International Boxing Tournament, and later in the year Pattaya will host the King’s Cup Jet Ski World Cup Grand Prix. There have been two bicycle races this year so far to raise awareness for alternate transportation and the importance of staying healthy. Ocean Marina Yacht club is hosting it’s 11th annual Top of the Gulf Regatta this year and reports that they are tailoring this years events around feedback from previous years. Pattaya has been very proactive in the National Beach Clean up initiative with plans to rebuild some of the receding coastline in both Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches. There are also grassroots beach clean ups popping up lead by social groups and businesses who want a cleaner greener Pattaya. Pattaya is currently on the path to becoming a family friendly tourist destination with an emphasis on sports and ecotourism.

hailand has just hosted not one, but two international level ‘world championship’ motorbike events a first for Thailand. First the Motocross World Championship came to Nakhon Pathom and that was followed a few weeks later by the World Superbike Championship’s visit to Buriram.
Honda, Ducati and BMW – didn’t get a look in all weekend. But that was Superbike. In truth for the spectators it all happened in Supersport, the hotly competitive support race that was sandwiched in between the two Superbike races on a baking hot Sunday afternoon in Buriram.
Bike racing is very popular in Pattaya and many local motorsport fans’ made the 200 km trip to watch the MXGP as well as the more than 400 km trek to see the Superbikes arrive in Thailand. It’s a fact of life now – unfortunately – that for Pattaya’s many motorsport fans that Bira Circuit is fading into its twilight years and they will have to get used to travelling much greater distances now.
For Thai motorsport this is really a dream circuit, dreams were realised when Superbike rocked up here – and the final dream was played out as a rider, almost forgotten in recent years, Ratthapark Wilairot, swept to a superbly judged victory on the Core Motorsport Honda after beating off the challenge of some of the world best riders. The crowds in the grandstands went into a frenzy as this dream scenario played out lap by lap.
World Superbike had been talked about for months and months and the anticipation had been growing. When it finally came to the Sunday races the vast main grandstand at Chang International Circuit was at bursting point while the sprawling car parking aprons were overflowing with bikes that had made the long journey eastwards. In Superbike Jonathan Rea claimed both wins, the Kawasaki rider adding those victories to the P1 and P2 he bagged at the season opener in Australia back in February to leave the circuit in championship lead. The British rider in fact had more than six seconds in hand at the end of race one and almost five seconds in race two and made it look all too easy. Runner up in both Superbike races was another Briton, this time factory Aprilia rider Leon Haslam. That adds up to a win and three second places from the four races held so far this year – and already with just the Australian and Thai rounds completed it looks like its going to be a two horse race for the championship. The final podium step in the first race went to Rea’s teammate Tom Sykes while in the second race Alex Lowes nabbed the last spot on the rostrum for Suzuki. The other big brand names –

"Ratthapark Wilairot, swept to a superbly judged victory on the Core Motorsport Honda after beating off the challenge of some of the world best riders. " One didn’t need to see a timing screen or even follow the bikes screaming around the high speed track as roaring of thousands of voices, the beating of drums and the blowing of horns began as soon as the lights went green and the crowds sensed victory could be on the cards. It was a sensational result, even more so as Wilairot has become a bit player. After a promising early career he climbed as far as Moto2, but the results just didn’t come and he eventually faded away from the headlines – and the racetrack. But there was to be a final roll of the dice. Last year the 27-yearold turned to Supersport for his racing comeback and he quickly started to hit the pace, improving his finishing positions race by race before ending the season with a podium in Qatar. This year he started off with a solid fifth place in Australia – and

that’s where it gets even sweeter. The first, second and fourth place finishers from round one all retired in Buriram while the third placed rider only managed P10 which not only gave Wilairot the win, but vaulted him into a six point lead in the championship, albeit after just two races. There was more family joy to come too as Wilairot’s younger brother, Ratthapong, was given a ‘wildcard’ entry in Buriram, thanks mainly to his nationality and promise, and the promptly finished in a highly impressive fifth place. It didn’t end there either. Thai youngsters, Nakarin Atiratphuvapat and Somkiat Chantra, shared the wins in the third supporting category, the Asia Talent Cup, between them. The crowd was pretty hoarse by the end of the afternoon. There is one thing in travelling hundreds of kilometers to see world class racing, but it’s a totally different thing altogether when you have ‘local’ heroes to cheer all the way to the top step of the podium. Thai motorcycle racing traditionally hasn’t been the strongest of sports here – but in Buriram it stood up, took on the world’s best and delivered – a very proud moment for the sport.
market, like someone who never goes to a track, who never watches any kind of motorsport, the key is how to get these people involved and how to get more new drivers, new racers.”
Motocross The same burning ambition had been on display a few weeks earlier when the Motocross World Championship had also come to Thailand. Motocross can actually claim to be the first ‘world championship’ level motorsport event to come to Thailand. This was the third and final year of that first contract and there was a switch of venue as the event now solidifies itself not just on the world calendar but also on the local landscape. For the first two years the event was held in Sriracha, a location that proved very popular with Pattaya fans that were able to make the short hop up to the stunning circuit, and which earned instant approval from the world-class riders.
It was an afternoon that the sport must use as a foundation to build on. That starts with this world-class facility that’s looks set to provide a fantastic platform for local talent to learn their trade in the right environment. And the circuit owners intend to develop that potential. “Now motorsport fans in Thailand all know about the track, they know about Chang International Circuit, that this is the best track we have the country,” said CIC Project Director Chanvittayarom. “I think the key for now is how to promote the events here, how to make motorsport fans decide to travel to Buriram to spend the weekend with the racing activities, and how to attract a new

For this year though maturity was the keyword and the emphasis has switched to ensuring viability and securing a long-term future for MXGP in Thailand. That saw the venue shifted to Thailand Circuit in Nakhon Pathom and in fact it was cleverly laid out ovr the infield of the permanent bike-racing course. The promoters here of MXGP also own Thailand Circuit so bringing the two together was a logical step forward. The concept is to create a ‘motorsport complex’ dedicated to two wheeled sports so adding a motocross track into this racing environment kicks off that plan. Shifting from the sharply flowing contours of Sriracha to the flat of Nakhon Pathom was never going to be an easy trick to pull off, but doubts were laid to rest when the bikes took to the track and in fact it turned out that the promoters called in the same designer who created the acclaimed track in Sriracha to develop the new location – and he pulled the feat off again. Importantly, the crowds kept coming, and the spectator entertainment zones were bigger than ever. Clearly, the MXGP organisers understand the need to keep the spectators fully occupied from dawn to dusk. A smaller sport always has the benefit that fans can get up-close with their heroes much more easily and feel a greater sense of inclusion. Motocross is all about the bigger ‘show’, it’s like no other motorsports discipline as the bikes flying skywards and back down in a constant motion gives it more the feel of a ballet that’s played out on a muddy terrain. It’s artistry at its finest and the crowds are mesmerised by the bigger overall picture. In the headlining MXGP the world superstars delivered a stunning performance of skills and the first race was won by Kawasaki’s American rider Ryan Villopoto while KTM’s Italian Antonio Cairoli took the other win. In the supporting MX2 race KTM’s Jeffery Herlings seems to have really perfected the art of winning this category and the Dutchman claimed both victories. There was also an MX ladies race and the local riders, given ‘wildcard’ entries into the main races dug deep and fought hard with the big stars. This new all year round facility in Nakhon Pathom – just like for the Superbike riders in Buriram – is a world class facility on which they can climb to the standard that they will need to achieve in the future if they are to succeed internationally. MXGP has built up a very solid fanbase since it arrived here a couple of years ago and the good news is that the event is set to continue into the future. Organiser Kraitos Wongsawan confirmed after the event that the contract will be extended and he has bigger ambitions to take the show to the next level. Pattaya’s large contingent of big bike fans can be reassured that the world class events – both on an off the tarmac – are certainly here to stay, but they are going to have to get used to travelling.

Marine Fire Safety O
ne of a boat owner’s gravest fears is that of an offshore boat fire. Just as the use and purpose of a boat differs vastly from that of a car or a structure, so too does the risk and danger of an onboard fire. After all a burning boat is miles, not minutes away from professional firefighters. It has no fire escape and no sprinkler system. Nor does it have a convenient road shoulder on which one can park and flee the flames. Instead it is comprised of a small enclosed space in which a fire can spread violently and briskly in a matter of moments. Factor in the danger of fuel tanks exploding, the fact that a boat hull comprised of fiberglass burns vigorously and emits toxic fumes. Then add in a boats limited escape options into the mix, and the terror of an onboard inferno becomes all the more palpable. This is why both amateur and professional mariners should cover all bases in terms of preventing marine fires. Fortunately, the only things needed is a minimal sum of money and an abundance of awareness.
Fuel Fires
Fuel fires outnumber the cause all other boat related fires by two to one. They are also the most avoidable if the following safety procedures are observed when refueling: - Stop the engine and extinguish all cigarettes and open flames - Ensure that all radios and electrical appliances capable of sparking are switched off - Close all hatches, portholes and other openings before fueling begins - Keep the fill nozzle in constant contact with the tank and wipe up all spills - Ventilate the vessel by opening all hatches portholes and other openings when fueling is complete - Run the blowers for a minimum of four minutes before engaging the engine - Check for petrol fumes in the engine hatch, bilge access ports, and blower intake hose before starting the engine

Electrical Fires
The second most common cause of a boat fire has been attributed to a faulty electrical system. The primary reasons for this ii shoddy or makeshift repairs, as well as do it yourself installation of equipment and wiring. To avoid sparking up an onboard blaze: - Never use electrical tape to repair or splice a wire, instead always use marine approved waterproof butt connectors or waterproof heat-shrink tubing - Whenever possible avoid splicing, always use a single length of the proper gauge wire when making a new, or repairing an old connection - Routinely inspect the vessel’s wiring and electrical system, keeping a weather eye out for corrosion on electrical connections, and worn, cracked, brittle or discolored insulation. - Have all suspect wiring professionally replaced immediately
Preventative Maintenance
Poor equipment maintenance is another frequent offender in regard to starting boat related fires. It should go without saying that constant vigilance, fire prevention inspections, and adhering to manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedules will all help prevent a devastating boat blaze. - If the boat’s been dormant for a prolonged period or at the start of the boating season go over every inch of the vessels equipment with a fine tooth comb - Focus heavily on both the fuel and the electrical systems - Inspect all electrical and fuel connections ensuring that both the wires and lines are sound and leak free - Check that all fuel hose clamps are secure, but not so tight that they cut into the fuel line - Scrutinize metal fuel tanks for signs of corrosion and that none of its mounting connections have vibrated loose. Examine plastic tanks for any signs of swelling, bulging or discoloration - Repair or replace anything that is suspect
Other Fire Prevention Methods
In addition to the above every boat should have: - An approved personal floatation device for each passenger and crew member - A smoke alarm whenever applicable. Its early warning can prevent toxic smoke inhalation, provide adequate time to extinguish a fire, give you the time to alert emergency services or ensure that you safely abandon ship. Be sure to test the alarm at regular intervals and that it always contains working batteries - An adequate number of fire extinguishers commensurate with the size and type of vessel. Make sure that they are of the correct type, properly positioned, and inspected and refilled as recommended by the manufacturer - Keep tall decks and compartment clear of rags, rubbish, and easily ignited refuse - Finally store all spare fuel, oil and cleaning solvents in a well ventilated, secure and fireproof container away from the engine compartment and all electrical connections
In the Event of a Fire
Don’t panic, move away from the fire, assemble the passengers and crew on deck in their floatation devices. If time permits, switch off the engine fuel and all electrical components and contact emergency services. If the fire is beyond your control, do not attempt to recover anything of value and abandon ship immediately.

Cherry QQ
E
ven at twice the price of the world’s cheapest car, the Chinese made Cherry QQ is likely the least expensive automobile available on Thailand’s car market. Retailing somewhere in the neighborhood of 155,000 Thai baht, the Cherry Automobile Company, a subsidiary of the Thailand Automobile Group has recently announced the arrival of a ‘city car’ produced by one of China’s leading auto manufacturers – Cherry Automobile.
The Cherry QQ, a mini-model hatchback that was specifically engineered for the urban environment, was first launched in China back in 2003. Since its release this affordable, easy to drive, and modestly equipped motor consistently topped China’s auto sales charts until its popularity peaked in 2010. Today four similar models of the – the Cherry QQ3 1.1-TXE, Cherry QQ3 0.8-TX, Cherry QQ3 0.8-TE, and the Cherry QQ3 0.8-TE (Aircon) are now rolling off Chinese assembly lines for domestic consumption and export to the Land of Smiles, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, as well as other developing nations.
Exterior Classed as an ‘urban’ or ‘city’ vehicle, this miniature motor measures 3550mm in length, 1495mm in width, 1485mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2340mm. Exterior wise, its body styling and interior design bear a striking resemblance in both form and structure to the Daiwoo Matiz, which was marketed as the Chevrolet Spark outside of Korea. This coincidence initially sparked some trademark infringement disputes with General Motors, which have since been settled out of court. Other external Cherry QQ design components include four doors and a hatchback, a rear windshield washer and wiper, rear spoiler, a mud skirt, and a high mounted break light.

Interior Given its puny price, the QQ’s interior finish can best be described as being closer to ‘top shelf’ than ‘bargain basement’. This claim is not made without good reason as its interior space easily accommodates a family of four, but nothing more. The split rear seats however, have the ability to fold down in order to create a spacious cargo area capable of transporting luggage, groceries, or the family pet. Other internal conveniences include, child locks and a remote release for both the boot lid and fuel filler.
Packages & Options
strength is beefed up by side impact protection bars, as well as an engine immobilizer. For peace of mind, the quality of the Cherry QQ is backed up by a 3 year or 100,000kn warranty. If you’re in the market for a motor who’s gotta’ haves include being: • Easy to drive • Nimble enough to qualify as a city runabout • Of a size that allows it to be shoehorned into even the smallest of parking spaces • Frugal in terms of fuel economy • At a price point that’s easy on the pocketbook … then this Chinese Cherry should be checked out.
With two models, each with two trim packages (TXE & TX) to choose from, potential buyers have much to consider in the way of options. The various packages are equipped with a vast selection of modern amenities all with style, safety, comfort, luxury, and convenience in mind. Some of the Cherry QQ’s many outstanding choices include: • Power steering • Air conditioning • Electric mirrors • Sunroof • Central locking • Electric Windows • Remote alarm system • Leather upholstery • Compact disc player with two or four speakers • USB ports • Alloy wheels
Power & performance Internally, the Cherry QQ is powered by one of two different sizes of forward mounted engines: a 0.8 L, 3-cyl engine or the 1.1 L, 4-cyl engine, which deliver a maximum torque of 70Nm and 90Mn at 3500rpm, and are capable of going from 0 to 100kph in 18.5 and 20 seconds respectively. Both engines utilize a 5-speed manual transmission and consume between 5 and 6.8L of petrol per 100km. With a 35L capacity fuel tank, the Cherry QQ can cover approximately 500km between refills. Its diminutive size allows for a 10M turning radius, and the suspension on all models is comprised of MacPherson struts on the front, and beam and coil springs at the rear. The combination of front wheel drive, 13 inch wheels and 125mm of ground clearance ensures that the QQ rolls smoothly and unobstructed over all but the roughest of road surfaces.
Safety All Cherry QQ models are equipped with antilock brake systems, dual airbags; three point safety belts on the front and rear seats, as well as a full size spare tire. Structurally speaking, the QQ’s

By Rhiannon Caldwell
An Expat's True Story It is the 15th of April 2015, Songkran festival in Thailand and I am standing in a field of sunflowers with the king in the background and a man that has taught me what it is to love has brought me here. I am celebrating my 4th Songkran festival since moving to the Land of Smiles in 2012. Each one has had it’s own charm and has had a healing impact on my very soul. You see I have gone home for the holidays. I found my spiritual home in the province of Suphan Buri, and my Thai family resides there. They have brought me in as one of their own as if I have been with them a lifetime, and in many ways I have, since I feel like I didn’t really begin living until after my arrival in Thailand. Songkran is a new beginning. It is the cleansing of the past, the washing away of one's sins in order to clean the slate for the upcoming year. In order to appreciate how incredible the Thai people have been for me, and to really understand their hospitality we have to revisit the first time I celebrated the Thai New Year in Koh Samui only 13 days after my arrival in the kingdom. I walked out of my hotel onto the street and before I reached the first corner a Thai man who spoke very little English invited me onto the back of his motorbike, I feebly argued for a few minutes and ended up getting on the bike, little did I know this was a direct path to Thai people, their culture, and everything I love about this wonderful country. We rode around the island visiting everyone he knew, which to me seemed to be the entire island, we enjoyed coconut ice cream with sticky rice while overlooking the cliffs of Samui. We climbed on the rocks, we circled the island several times, we stayed wet the entire day our faces white with powder and when the sun went down it was time to eat. He took me to his mother's house where she had been cooking all day. We enjoyed a feast with at least 7 different dishes, I experienced my first Thai shower, and a squat toilet, and could not have been more delighted by the people who had invited me as a stranger into their home to enjoy a family meal and celebration. I felt my heart lift and warm to these people who could treat me as family when I was a stranger in their country. I never saw the man again, but he made an impression on my life that will last until the day I die. Now let’s fast forward to 2015, I am now living in Pattaya. I have committed to making a life in Thailand. After the first year I returned to my home in Hawaii to pick up my little dog, Chibby to come back to Thailand with me. Since Thailand I have learned the art of being grateful and I have found that when I have a true need it is always provided for, this weekend was no exception. I have had a rough time of late with people not treating me very good and rather than tolerate toxic people in my life I have been cutting them off. This holiday came around and I was feeling particularly lonely. I spent my first two years in a small town Suphan Buri, which I consider my spiritual home. The friends I have made there are my Thai family and they showed it this holiday weekend. My friend Laem called me on day 2 of a 5 day weekend from Pattaya, he was in town for another 5 hours and wanted to see me. It had been just over a year since we last saw each other. I went straight to Pattaya beach where he was and he asked

me if I was working the following day. I wasn’t and that is when things shifted. He asked me to come celebrate Songkran with his family in his home town of U-thong. I had 100 baht, not even enough to feed myself on this journey much less pitch in for gas and whiskey. Without a moment's pause he squashed my hesitation and told me not to worry about anything, that all would be taken care of. Was it because he had the funds? No way, but what he does have is ultimate faith in his friends and family and in the universe to provide, and boy did it! We loaded in the truck all 11 of us and let the adventures begin. One thing about Thai people, they hate to see anyone alone and will go to great lengths to include someone. The road trip began. Chibby and I loaded in the truck, we traveled to Lop Buri, Suphan Buri, and U-thong in the space of 48 hours. We visited family homes, neighborhood bars, the sunflower fields, the summer flower festival, and the temple where Laem built the Big Buddha statue near his home. The last time I was there was for a fundraiser to build the statue and they had not broken ground yet, now it was standing with the setting sun in the backdrop and it was gloriously beautiful. When it was time to return I had 20 baht to my name. My friends, my boss, and a whole lot of love, saw me home in time for work, a full belly, and some spending cash to get me through. I’ve not got two half days to work, and two friends at my home waiting for me to continue the celebrations through to the 19th which is Pattaya’s Wan Lai Festival. Sawadee pbee mai na ka, choke dee ka. (Happy New Year, Good luck)

I
A Fool in Paradise
must once again express my thanks to the human race for providing my daily amusement. Without them, I would have nothing to write about. I mean, plants and animals can be amusing at times, but even the cuteness of a playful kitten can wear thin after a while. Humans, on the other hand, just never cease to amaze me. Take, for instance, an AFP news report dated the 15th of April about an inflatable high-quality sex doll made from a rubbery material and “available from specialist shops in Beijing for around US$2,500 (NZD$3300).” Being a suspicious Australian, my immediate question was why the currency conversion into New Zealand dollars? Is that significant? Is the AFP aware of some statistics indicating that Kiwi men would be a huge potential market for an inflatable high-quality sex doll made from a rubbery material? If not, would they like a few? For expedience, instead of ‘inflatable high-quality sex doll’, lets name her ‘Suzie’, after the character Suzie Wong played by the beautiful Nancy Kwan in the 1960 movie, The World of Suzie Wong. Unlike her famous predecessor however, modern ‘Suzie’ is 156 centimetres tall with a disproportionate bosom, adjustable hands and removable head. Her disproportionate bosom is completely understandable, if I am correct in assuming it to mean that she has large breasts. After all, she was designed by a man. Her adjustable hands also seem to be a logical feature given that many men like to be greeted with a nice firm handshake when arriving home from work each day. The removable head feature took a bit of getting used to but, once I did, I felt it was a marvellous innovation. I am guessing they really meant ‘exchangeable head’ because surely it would not be considered within the bounds of normal behaviour to be caught having an intimate moment with a headless plastic doll. Even your best mates might roll an eye at that. I assume the idea is to purchase two or more different head types which you could swap around depending on your mood. Imagine Suzie and her boyfriend sitting together on the lounge and chatting about world events when they suddenly have a disagreement. “I’m sick of talking to you, Suzie. I am going to talk with Mary now.” With lightning speed, he then switches the heads and starts a whole new conversation. A type of plastic schizophrenia. The author of the AFP article interviewed a young, married Chinese man who worked in the city during the week and went home to his wife on the weekends. Married for more than 10 years, he said he, “did not want to be unfaithful,” even though he could easily find a working woman and pay her a little money to “satisfy

his sexual appetites” as required. “But a blow-up alternative was not an option. ‘There was no way I would have sex with that kind of cheap inflatable plastic,’ he explained. Instead he forked out 15,800 yuan (NZD$3400), almost a month's pay, for his more realistic Chinese-made ‘156’." Again with the currency conversion to New Zealand dollars. But then our morally superior (“did not want to be unfaithful”) man of high social standards (“No way I would have sex with that kind of cheap inflatable plastic”), perhaps gave us a sneak insight into his true feelings. “The only way a doll is better than a woman is that it won't resist, so people can do whatever they want with it.” Mmmm. Does this mean the guy has (had) problems with women who ‘resist’? My face went white and my mind turned fifty shades of grey just thinking about it. A Beijing doll salesman said proudly, "Most people think the dolls are more attractive than real women." I have never been to northern China but I don’t think I want to now. The salesman also noted, “Some models are also significantly shorter - more akin to child-size - than ‘156’, for ‘convenience’.” That was scary. In the West it is not considered appropriate to mention the word ‘child’ in the same sentence, paragraph or even on the same page as the words ‘sex doll’. China has a well-documented gender imbalance. “Almost 116 boys are born for every 100 girls in China,” meaning my Suzie, and thousands like her, has become “a stand-in companion for Chinese men with empty beds.” “Many young men in China have difficulty finding girlfriends or socialising with women. Many previously reclusive young men have made friends through the online doll community,” the salesman added. “Having any kind of hobby is better than having none, right?” Funnily enough; I never thought that owning a sex doll - or two - could be classed as a ‘hobby’ like collecting stamps. Furthermore, if I did have a fascination with inflatable sex dolls, I am certain I would want to keep that a very closely guarded secret. I certainly would not want my name on some online doll community’s mailing list. “Then they will start to dress them up in different costumes ... and probably end up naming them like a human being. (Woops!) For some buyers, dolls are not about sex, but love. Calling themselves ‘friends of dolls’, anonymous individuals gather on dedicated online forums, sharing user reviews and advice. Their numbers have risen from a few hundred to more than 20,000 in recent years.” Up until reading the words ‘sharing user reviews and advice’ I had a good chance of keeping down my lunch. The fact I had actually named a doll is disturbing enough and such familiarity has to stop. Suzie is completely deflated and I am totally appalled. If such a ‘hobby’ got out of control, imagine standing up in front of a crowd of men in raincoats at a Sex Dolls Anonymous meeting and declaring: “Hello, my name is Bill and I am a sex doll addict. It has been six months since I last had sex with an inanimate object.” No sir. That is not me. And Suzie wouldn’t like it either.

The Next Big Thing is Here : The Internet of Things Now, if there is one certainty I can actually say exists in our ever-more fast changing world, is that you will hear this term everywhere, because the Internet Of Things is here. This term refers to an environment where everything is connected to another (and able to communicate) through the internet. What does this mean? Well, technically, anything that we make it to be. Ideas already in development include smart trashcans that can tell automated drone collectors that they are full and ready to be emptied, a fridge that can identify exactly what is running low and then put an automatic order to your local retailer, your package will then be quickly delivered by a flying drone... and this is just the beginning.
up their efforts to integrate their activities, ensuring the firsts steps are taken towards the full integration of the Internet of Things within a 5 year period. That's right, in 5 years time , everything that you know will have absolutely changed under the influence of what some call 'bundles opportunities only limited by our imagination', a definite technology that will make everything around us 'smart'. Let's take a look at how some of the biggest corporations in the world are embracing this new wave of development.
“...everything that you know will have absolutely changed under the influence of what some call bundles opportunities only limited by our imagination” In the past months huge international companies have stepped
Samsung invests $100 million in developing 'The Internet of Things' The giant Korean conglomerate has always being an avid supporter of cross communication between devices. This month however, they have taken things to another level by announcing a $100 million development fund aimed at designer and developers to create 'an universal platform' for the internet of things. The idea behind creating an operating system that will allow all devices (regardless of the company that built them) to communicate with each other is one of the most important steps towards the absolute integration of things, animals and humans through the internet.
“The ambitious plan says that within 5 years, Samsung will guarantee all it's products can communicate with all other devices through the Internet of Things ”
The ambitious plan says that within 5 years, Samsung will guarantee all it's products can communicate with all other devices through an operating system for The Internet of Things. Quite a short expanse of time if you consider the huge implications of this technology.
Amazon creates dash to change the way we shop The Goliath online retailer has announced the development of dash, a simple 'one button' solution to all your shopping needs. If something is almost out, you just press dash and an automatic order will be placed to Amazon, who is trying to make sure they'll be able to deliver it with style. Given Amazon is already perfecting their drone delivery system, it is not impossible that within 5 years we'll have small and automated flying machines delivering all the products you needs short minutes after you just pressed a button.
IBM goes all in: $3 Billion invested into 'The Internet of Things' That's correct, one of the oldest and most respected IT companies in the entire world has pledged multiple billions of dollars into developing the systems and infrastructure needed to sustain the integration of pretty much everything that we know. A big portion of the investment will go directly into educating designers and developers to ensure companies rip the best benefits from the Internet of Things, so do prepare for new developments from IBM on the daily basis.
few decades is having on the reality around us. Every single system, process, business, product, society and individual will be drastically and deeply affected by the endless possibilities the Internet of Things provides for us curious and creative beings.
Conclusion: It is an absolute understatement to say the future is here, it has been around for a while now. What is certainly changing, and doing so at an alarmingly rapid rate, is the actual, physical effects all this technology we have been developing in the past

ARE YOU A WEALTHY INVESTOR? In current market conditions it is really important for offshore investors to be in a position to act quickly- to have the ability to liquidate all held stocks into cash and when the time is right buy back in to the market without costing the earth. For myriad reasons many investors hold their trinkets, cash, share certificates, stocks and securities in a safe deposit box and in a variety of other areas both on and offshore. This can lead to real problems for the wealthy investor There are many reasons why people have safe deposit boxes but whatever they are they cannot compare with the advantages of holding all your assets in an offshore Executive Investment Bond. (EIB) sometimes called a Portfolio Bonds (PB) An EIB is like a big warehouse which can hold all your investments, wherever you purchased them. It can hold or purchase on your behalf fixed interest securities, stocks and shares on a regulated stock exchange, bonds gilts and currency deposits, unit trusts, mutual funds and cash deposits. Your name is not painted all over this warehouse. You see all of your assets are transferred and legally owned by the EIB Provider and held on their behalf by a custodian trustee. Many wealthy investors especially use an EIB. But it has much more to offer than just that. The ability to structure an investment portfolio requires careful planning, prudent stock selection and knowledge of the world’s investment markets. Your advising broker can appoint a professional fund advisor to do all this for you. Normal stock broker’s fees for this service are 1.5% of your portfolio. The EIB can offer a discount of 1.2% so actual cost is 0.3%.. There are also Chartered stockbrokers based in the UK who will advise you for a flat annual fee. You can of course make your own investment decisions. Initial discounts from fund management groups are a
88 88
PATTAYA TRADER
big feature of an EIB. For example if you requested the warehouse manager to purchase say an offshore HSBC fund he would pay 0.25%. If you were to purchase it directly it would cost you 5%, a saving of 4.75% similarly you could purchase a Blackrock fund at 0.0% charge where you would pay 5%to 7%. This would gives you the flexibility to change your investment portfolio at any time: especially convenient if the market crashes, when you can liquidate without exorbitant cost So how can your EIB provider offer these discounts? The simple answer is bulk purchase. A company like Skandia (soon to be rebranded as Old Mutual) qualifies for these discounts as they are the largest single purchaser of many offshore investment funds. The entire discount is passed onto you, the bond holder. They make their money with an annual management fee. Once you own a bond you can then forget about distribution of dividends spending hours calculating your net worth and never being sure and wondering about currency calculations. Each quarter you will receive an in depth valuation statement or check online daily.

For the mature investor who thinks about estate planning, there are major advantages. Normally with each investment you have, your beneficiaries, on your death, will need to get probate in each jurisdiction where the asset is held. With the EIB this is not needed. So the EIB in summary offers administrative simplicity, worldwide dealing, no CGT or income tax, corporate discounts, bank account facility, bank loan/leverage and denomination in any major world currency and estate planning simplicity.
Of the many EIB providers I prefer Royal Skandia.(old Mutual) from now on They are not owned by a bank: They were the pioneers in portfolio bonds 30 years ago:. They have more EIB’s than any other provider and they have the largest offshore EIB dept with over 100 staff. In addition everything today is done online. You can switch your funds,, get a cash withdrawal, change your address or buy and sell stocks and shares and the application for the bond is all done online.
Just a cautionary note. - PB’s cannot hold everything. Exclusions may include works of art, coins, precious metals, property and derivatives. Further info contact David.thrifty@yahoo.com

Product Review, The U-Turn turntable Price range: $179- $309 Where to Buy: store.uturnaudio.com As we move further and deeper into a world conquered and ran by digital technology, is still good to see people going back to the good old analog devices. There's certainly a whole different feel when you get to experience music using a turntable and real vinyl discs: Looking through your collection until you find the perfect song for that moment, the unveiling of the vinyl, the textures, the smells, the wonderful moment when that needle softly drops on the wax to produce, almost as if by magic, the wonderful and rich sound you can only get from the vinyl/needle interaction... It's truly a wonderful experience that involves all your senses. I’m not sure whether most people realize we have never stop making vinyls, whether Dj's or music enthusiasts, the demand for vinyl and turntable has never stopped so companies have always made them. In the past decade, however, there seems to have been an entire mass awakening to the wonders of listening to music using turn tables, noticing this, some very smart little companies decided to start creating hi-quality turntables that use technological advancements only to create a better analog experience. The sound quality, the smoothness of the mechanics and beautifully simple designs are just some of the many reasons people are falling in love with the format all over again. Let's take a good look at one of the most popular models in the market, the U-Turn turntable
