Season’s Greetings

Sameer Handa Beijer Ref Managing Director for Australasia

MESSAGE FROM OUR MD

W

hat an exciting year 2015 has been! Few would have been able to predict the monumental changes for Patton and the refrigeration industry in general. The year started off with some uncertainty followed by the excitement of the perfect partnership with our new owners from Sweden, Beijer Ref AB. More exciting challenges and opportunities followed when Beijer Ref acquired Realcold in NZ & Australia later in the year expanding their footprint to be one of the largest refrigeration wholesalers in the world! Before I go much further, I would like to acknowledge and thank each and every staff member for their contribution to our company and making us so successful in what we do. Together we have the ability to grab hold of the opportunities for future growth & success, stay tuned for further updates and developments. We are undergoing major changes in Australia. There the Beijer / Patton / Realcold transition will create a stronger, more resilient business through existing & new partnerships. Our immediate focus will be on continuing to provide the best service to our customers and establish stronger relationships with our suppliers going forward. With focus on these key areas we can all build on the future and grow in all sectors of the business in 2016. I am really pleased with the positive attitude and confident that we will all play our part in taking our business to the next level. In closing let me thank you for your continued support of Patton Group, I encourage you to remain engaged and consider the many benefits we can bring to our industry as we rebuild existing and forge new collaborations within the wider industry. Have a great Christmas and hopefully some quality time with family and friends, above all stay safe and well and I look forward to a great 2016 for us all in the HVAC&R Industry.

Patton Shines at Indian Business Awards 2015

P

atton Ltd won the Best Large Business Award and Supreme Business of the Year Award at the Eighth Annual BNZ-Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards (INIBA) held on 23rd November 2015 at the Sky City Convention Centre, Auckland, New Zealand. Established in 1923 in Christchurch, Patton was acquired this year by Beijer Ref. It is a credit to highly experienced CEO and Director Sameer Handa and his management team that the sometimes-difficult change management process has been navigated soundly and that the enlarged group in New Zealand is in good shape to take advantage of new opportunities.

India is the world’s largest producer of milk and also the biggest producer of fruit and vegetables. Patton sees this as a huge opportunity to grow in this market as the demand for refrigeration accelerates. Additionally, Patton’s HR Manager Umesh Thakur took home with the Best Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award! Umesh is responsible for the Human Resource strategy and practice for Patton. The judges were impressed that the HR function has been aligned to business goals, and has led to positive changes in staff culture and engagement. We congratulate Patton Ltd and Umesh Thakur for their achievements.

The judges were very impressed with the way Patton has more than doubled its business in India in the last five years.

As New Zealanders we pride ourselves as a Rugby nation, and why wouldn’t we? This year on the world stage in England, our team with the backing of 4million plus have not let us down, making history in winning back to back Rugby World Cups. To show our support for our team in black, Patton New Zealand ran a very successful countrywide campaign and we aptly named it: “Bring Back the Cup”.

Each week all customers spending in excess of $100 were eligible to take part by guessing the winning score of the All Blacks games. We had the support of all our branches and together amassed over 2000 entries over a period of 8 weeks. To get right into the spirit of supporting our “Men In Black”, all branches were given All Black and participating country flags, bunting and balloons to decorate their branch and to dive right into Rugby World Cup fever. Each week a lucky customer won a $500 Patton trade voucher. The support from both staff and customers was overwhelming! From day one our Christchurch branch was the star performer with 533 entries followed by Palmerston North and Auckland with 433 and 375 entries respectively. At the end of the competition the Christchurch branch was awarded a cash prize of $500 to share with the team. The final game was the last for a few of our Rugby Legends, with Captain Fantastic Richie McCaw and the brilliant Dan Carter amongst the few announcing their official retirement. We would like to thank all staff for their unfailing believe and support of our National Team as well as getting behind the Patton Promotion.

The Cranleigh K2 is the toughest one day cycle race in the southern hemisphere, known for its tough climbs and screaming descents. Named after Kuaotunu, an enchanting community on the coastline of the Coromandel peninsula. In Moari it means “to inspire fear in young animals”, the 2 stands for the almost 200km that the ride covers. This year Cameron Wynniatt - Engineer in our support office team - broke away on the first climb out of Thames, the Kopu-Hikuai with professional rider Michael Torckler. While Michael proved too strong in the end, Cameron finished in second place overall in a time of 5hrs 22min and won the KOM (King Of the Mountain) jersey for his efforts.

Beijer Ref wins its first order in New Zealand for transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) cooling through its subsidiary Patton. This is another step in Beijer Ref’s ambition to be leading the transition to environmentally friendly refrigerants. The CO2 rack will be produced by Beijer Ref’s Italian company SCM Frigo and installed in a supermarket for an important New Zealand retail chain. The unit is one of the most innovative designs being a “plug’n cool” version with the gas cooler integrated into the outdoor frame, which means simple and fast installation on the site. Beijer Ref focus on carbon dioxide and other natural refrigerants is increasingly contributing to lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) emissions. Patton Press | Issue 15 | December 2015

Beijer Ref Q3 2015 Update Significant events during the first nine months of the year

I

n January, Beijer Ref signed an agreement with Carrier International Corporation, the world-leading American refrigeration group. The agreement gives the Swedish refrigeration wholesaler the exclusive right to distribute Carrier’s DX product series within the comfort-cooling segment and to all pertaining service of these products in Europe. In February, Beijer Ref acquired all the shares in the refrigeration wholesale company, RNA Engineering & Trading, which has its head office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company reports sales of approximately SEK 45M. It is the leading refrigeration wholesaler in the Malaysian market for commercial refrigeration, estimated to be worth nearly SEK 480M with a stable growth of around 10 per cent per annum. In March, Beijer Ref acquired all the shares in the refrigeration wholesale company, Patton, which has its head office in Auckland, New Zealand, and operations in New Zealand, Australia, India and Thailand. Patton was founded in 1923 and reports sales of approximately SEK 400M. It is the leading refrigeration wholesaler in New Zealand, with some sales of products manufactured by the company itself. The acquisition gives Beijer Ref a foothold in the important New Zealand, Australian and Indian markets and, at the same time, strengthens the existing operation in Thailand.

The Group transfers its collective refrigeration competence to a growing portfolio with products manufactured by the company itself, modelled on the Italian company, SCM Frigo’s, recipe for success. In Sweden, the manufacturing company, SCM REF Sweden, already exists. In June, Beijer Ref Poland signed its first order for carbon dioxide-based refrigeration systems, which is a step forward in the Group’s ambition to be the driving force in the changeover to eco-friendly refrigeration technology in Europe. In September, Patton Australia sold its first chiller from Beijer Ref ’s sector-leading Italian manufacturing company, SCM Frigo, which can be seen as a breakthrough order. Beijer Ref also strengthened its operation in Africa by establishing an operation in Ghana in September The refrigeration wholesale company, Realcold, which has its head office in Auckland, New Zealand, and around 20 branches in New Zealand and Australia was acquired in July. In October, after the end of the reporting period, the acquisition was approved by the competition authority in New Zealand.

In May, Beijer Ref expanded its OEM division through the formation of the company SCM REF France which, with its registered office in Lyon, will focus on the development of an assembly operation to Beijer Ref ’s subsidiaries in Southern Europe.

Good News! Patton just won a good order of largest Ducted Unit from our loyal Auckland Customer. We successfully turned the end user towards Mitsubishi Electric against Temperzone. Customer: Chenery Contacting Ltd End user/Site: NZ Window Shades All ME stock in country is sold out for: 5 x PEA RP170WJA ( New Model).

NEW WORLD IGA opens at Nakasi. Refrigeration equipment by Patton.

O

One of Fiji’s premier supermarket chains, New World Ltd, has invested close to $ 2.0 million to open a new store at the original site of their busy Nakasi corridor business. After the previous store burnt down over two years ago this new store will be the fourth Independent Grocers Association (IGA) USA affiliated store in Fiji.

Patton supplied two racks, 1 x medium and 1 x low temperature, to satisfy the total stores refrigeration requirements. As the site was on swampy ground and access to the rear was limited the units had to be helicoptered over the buildings and lowered into position. Since installation and commissioning it has been observed how efficient the systems are and the energy savings are a huge benefit when compared to the previous stores equipment set-up. Patton units are well recognised in the Pacific Islands and we are proud to have been involved with this project and especially pleased to have assisted the service company in providing their customer a reliable system with lower maintenance costs.

Over 70 people are employed at the supermarket and the company has future plans to expand in Fiji with the next IGA outlet expected to be in Savusavu.

First SCM Frigo Installation for Australia

I

n July Beijer Ref (Patton Australia) were asked to submit several options to 3 different contracting organisations.

These options included Semi Compressors with VSD etc. However, the winning option was to go with Emerson Compressors with Digital technology for optimum energy in the focus. Also it is worth making a point that we can offer the customer compressor options from any of the major manufacturers in the market. The system was also unique in the way that we utilized one common discharge line and liquid drain back to the receiver for both the medium and low temperature systems. And simply sent 2 liquid lines and suction lines out to the case headers. This enabled us to use a smaller refrigerant foot print and in turn saving initial cost in refrigerant charge. The

top section housed 3 x ZF scroll compressors for the low temperature application. The bottom housing the ZB and ZBD scrolls for the medium temperature side. The unit also comes fully wired including pre-programmed Dixell rack controllers. This all conveniently packaged in a very compact arrangement to save on overall spaced taken up by the finished product. SCM – Frigo were very receptive to all options presented to them and made no barriers for us to get on with the work. Everything was simple and straight forward.

For Emerson Climate Technologies and its partners, understanding the specific pain points of the customer was the key to coming up with a solution that suits their requirements.

Casino Operator Turns To Copeland Digital HLR Receiver Unit To Solve Its Refrigeration Problems The Need For A Compact and Efficient Refrigeration Solution The contractor in charge of a new kitchen development at an existing casino in Queensland sought the help of leading refrigeration wholesaler company Beijer Ref Australia (Patton) for a variable capacity unit with a small footprint. This would be used in their two new kitchens which serviced a bar area. In addition, the unit should be able to get the condenser water from an existing chiller. Aware of Emerson Climate Technologies’ expertise in digital scroll technologies for refrigeration applications, Beijer Ref Australia (Patton) turned to the company for an answer.

The Copeland Scroll Digital HLR Receiver Unit After learning about the client’s requirements, Emerson Climate Technologies, through Beijer Ref Australia (Patton), delivered the appropriate solution for them: the Copeland Scroll™ Digital Receiver Units HLR tandem unit. With its 10-100% capacity control, it was able to match the varying load from the kitchen and bar it serves. The unit also features low condensing temperature capability, allowing the use of the site’s existing chilled water for condensing purposes. HLR Digital Receiver Units combine the concepts of remote condenser, small footprint, and digital modulation for maximized installation flexibility. Its compact design combined with the power of Digital Scroll™ continuous capacity modulation also allowed for optimized environmental integration at highest system efficiency. Performance Beyond Satisfaction After being installed November 2014, the unit satisfied—and even exceeded—the casino’s requirements. The unit controlled well in large load swings during full kitchen operation and until kitchen shutdown. Even at very low loads, the HLR was able to perform up to par.

lisabeth McMaster (Customer Manager, NZTE Auckland) visited India in the month of October. During her visit we called on a project site (named Hemogenomics) to see Patton evaporators in operation where blood samples are stored. In an ultra low temperature application, there was confidence in Patton technology for the high value products. Liz (as Elisabeth is fondly called) regarded this visit as a good opportunity for her to see New Zealand technology in operation in India. Swatantra along with Sumedha accompanied Elisabeth. Sudha Patil (BDM, NZTE, New Delhi) was also there with the team and was excited to see low temperature refrigeration system from Patton.

The aim of this business mission is to strengthen existing relationships and foster new business connections between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Currently trade between the two countries is valued at over $250M and there is great potential for more growth. Seventeen New Zealand companies from a range of industries visited Sri Lanka as a business delegation led by former New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Sir Don McKinnon ONZ GCVO and Grahame Morton, High Commissioner to India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal to further strengthen business links between the two countries. Patton India was invited to attend this two days event. Swatantra has visited Colombo as a part of delegation. On 3rd November event started with brief introduction by Kelvin Mckenna (Trade commissioner based in Mumbai) and traditional Sri Lankan dance called Kandyan dance. Delegates were allowed to attend 5-6 business meetings in a day. Sri Lanka is a country with a population of 21 million and post the formation of New Govt recently and with peace prevailing after the end of civil war, there is a good amount of infrastructure being built.
