After the four years study, what is Landscape Architecture? I tend to regard Landscape Architecture is the way to create a harmonious connection system between human and environment, no matter how complicated the urban-architectural situation is; it is also the way to allow people to rediscover the value of everything. -

Taichung City

Issue Introduction The site is located in the central Taiwan, and is on the border between Taichung City and Taichung County. The core value of this project is to make the most of the significance Hand to Earth rebuilding the harmonies relationship between man and nature

of its locality, connecting the urban surroundings with the recreation surroundings, and thus

becoming

landmark in central Taiwan, while benefiting the environmental sustainability in the same time. An urban park experience shall not simply be a rehearsal of national parks experience, nor shall an urban park simply be an expanded street park. An urban park shall maximize its possibility, becoming a major meeting point in the big city and a feature of urban life. This project aims to reach such goal.

Concept The design concept of the entire park is like a hand buried deep into the earth, and it is

from such connection greenery is grown. A sense of connection and appreciation to the earth from people of all ages. Five fingers stretched outward, each creates its own

independent space, for different activity, yet all are connected to the bigger structure. The hand is like embedded in the earth, inseparable from the earth.

This project will awaken the recognition of the importance of urban park in the big Taichung. It values the needs of the metropolis. Various activities can be found in the park, a diverse and friendly urban park. The urban park will be simple yet not monotonous, indicating yet not complicated, secret yet not closed, open yet not fenceless. They seem contradictory when put together, yet they are all needed in an urban park. Greenish recreation spots separate in the park. A blue water ribbon connects different zones of the par. The park users can experience different milieu in the same park, and be exposed more to the park, time wise and space wise.

Issue Introduction

commercial area

East Taipei, especially Xinyi Dist, is the most prosperous area in Taiwan. The Xinyi Dist. is the seat of the Taipei mayor's office and the Taipei City Government. Key buildings including Taipei 101, Taipei City Council, Taipei Interna-

tional Convention Center, Taipei World Trade Center, and various shopping malls and entertainment venues make Xinyi the most modern cosmopolitan district of Taipei. Xinyi District is also considered the financial district of Taipei. The site is near one of the tallest building in the world – Taipei 101.

cultural and educational area

This area renders a sense of rapid and instant development. Four Four South Village, the former military dependents' village was built, filled with old low houses, and unused ground. Nowadays, the old village was mostly

Design Strategy ▪ To create a connection and cohesion between the three – the preserved old village, the north ground, and the south park. ▪ To take the hustle bustle commercial area across the road into consideration. ▪ To combine the old with the new, and transform the site into a green oasis of the city where people can repose, relax, and contemplate.

At the south side, inspired by the narrow alleys and small gutters of the old village, there will be a resembling design. In the old village, narrow alleys usually exist between two walls of houses. They usually contain some small gutters. In the park, the “narrow alley” is not surrounded by concrete walls, but by a wall resembling big grass slope, and am array of greenish trees. The “gutter” image will also be reused and thus become a little creek going through the entire park. The park will have an open view due to all the designs above, and will relate to the north ground. The images of the three parts will thus become cohesive , and together in this site the old and the new of the city can meet and have dialogues.

Section A-A’ Because of occasional military operations, in the past, there are small defense pillboxes in the village, as the shelters for militants or residents. In this project there is a Green Shelter, a basin square embraced by a elevated grassy slope. In the Green Shelter, the visitors can not only reminisce the impression of the old time, but also find peace, slowly walking down the slope toward the square, while the noise of the city temporary fades away. Next to the Green Shelter, also below one side of the slope, there is Family Playground, from where the energy of children laughter radiates through the whole park.

Tunghai University Music and Fine Arts Centre

Issue Introduction The project is located in the Second Teaching Area of Tunghai University and it covers the open space between three buildings—Music and Fine Arts Centre (MFAC) , College of Management Building, Student Residence Hall. The key intent of this project is to establish the connection and unity between three distinctly different buildings, in terms of functionality. The three buildings are all constructed with exposed concrete. Among them, the new landmark of Tunghai University, the MFAC, is famous for its rhombic-shaped grid element which echoes the Luce Chapel, the old landmark and renowned beacon of Tunghai University.

Concept By reducing the sense of conflict between buildings and environment, by generating a new order within an unsystematic district, and by creating a connection between independent buildings, the project will redefine this district. ▪ Return to the grace of nature ▪ Re-experience the nature ▪ Regain the respect to the creature diversity of nature

Tung Chiang Hot Springs Guesthouse Renewal Design Project (under construction)

Professional work / Oct. 2012 ~ Mar. 2013 Director: Sunph Position: Project designer Type: Hot springs guesthouse Location: Miaoli county, Taiwan This project is situated in Nanzhuang township, Miaoli county. It is part of the renewal project for an old Hot Spring Guesthouse, which was built in August 2003, originally famous for its distinct red brick architecture and the excellent location where beautiful views are accessible. It was once the top choice within the region for

C-C’

hot spring and recreation, but later it lost its popularity due to flawed management. The main goals for this project are not only to restore its popularity, but also to create a brand new Tung Chiang Hot Spring Guesthouse. Responding to the change in time and space,

B-B’ A-A’

and the new consumer demands, our work shall not only do reinforcement or repair, but also import a new design concept— to create a unique stylized Hot Springs Guesthouse, using simple geometric lines to re-plan the space, and combining simple modern granites with existing red brick element.

Design Development Project (under construction)

Professional work / Feb. 2013 ~ Jun. 2013 Director: Sunph Position: Project designer Type: urban residential housing Location: Kaohsiung city, Taiwan This project is located at an important urban junction nearby Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. We attempt to create a meaningful city facade for the public, while still respecting the residents’ private lives here. The design aims to initiate an intriguing dialogue with the disordered built environment through a unique yet contemporary gesture. It also wishes to break away from the typical mundane, and instead represent the vibrant city lifestyle specific to Kaohsiung City.

The project aims to create a comfortable space where people, no matter residents or visitors, can adjust their pace from intense to slow. Thus it adopts simple designs, combining explicit lines with simple yet elegant palette, to create a low key yet expansive impression. Besides decorations, functionality is also pragmatically included, and thus the users are able to enjoy the space, both physically and mentally.

I experimented with many illustrative and rendering methods during my studies in an attempt to explore dierent graphic outcomes, and I feel that sketching is still a very part of design and where ideas start to come to life. Overall, I believe that merging hand and digital techniques can produce unique design outcomes and can better illustrate thoughts and design intentions.
