[TAICHUNG METROPARK]
The core value of this project is to take the most of the significance of its locality, connecting the urban contexts with the recreation surroundings, and thus becoming an important tourism landmark in central Taiwan, while benefiting the environmental sustainability in the same time. In terms of urban park, it shall maximize its possibility, becoming a major meeting point in the big city and a feature of urban life. This project aims to reach such goal. The concept is like a hand buried deep into the earth, and it is from such connection greenery is grown. Five fingers stretched outward, each creates its own independent space, for different activity, yet all are integrated into a bigger structure. The hand is like embedded in the earth, inseparable from the earth. It values the needs of the metropolis where various activities can be found in the park, a diverse and friendly urban park.

This project will awaken the recognition of the importance of urban park in the big Taichung. Greenish recreation spots separate in the park. A blue water ribbon connects different zones of the par. The park users can experience different milieu in the same park, and be exposed more to the park, time wise and space wise. The urban park will be simple yet not monotonous, indicating yet not complicated, secret yet not closed, open yet not fenceless. They seem contradictory when put together, yet they are all needed in an urban park. A sense of connection and appreciation to the earth from people of all ages.

BREATHED HILL] 2015 Spring / Inhabitable Machines Design Studio Lydia Kallipoliti, Lori Brown Pingtung County, Taiwan 2016 Young Taiwanese Architectural Designers Exhibition in NYC
This project is aiming to focus on expanding our knowledge of the causes of climate change, address these issues politically and strategically to reduce harmful emissions while aiming at technological growth. It allows us to understand relations; our body in relation to the environment, the proximity of objects, an individual’s biometric imprint, the thickness of walls and vulnerability to weather.
The site is located in traditional tribe - Kucapungane areas in the Wutai Township, Pingtung County. Under the influence of extreme weather and global climate change, the tribe is buried and destroyed by landslide during the typhoon season in the summer, 2009, then moved to the new settlement. This project therefore focus on the issue of land loss and the following problems - lack of arable land, food and drinking water insecurity, etc.

The main purpose of the machine application here is to mediate material flows and thus generate energy, while at the same time offering a creative synthetic environment and being a highly specified designed environment that fosters different daily practices and alternative living patterns specific to the biome’s conditions.
On the other hand, the traditional space forming of the Kucapungane tribe is highly related to its culture, activities, and social system. The application thus not only response to the issues need to solve, but more importantly, it considers the local suitability and treats as a spatial strategy. Furthermore, the machine is flexible. It can be an “equipment”, a “system”, or even a “space”.

Four-Four South Village, the former military dependents’ village was built, filled with old low houses, and unused ground. Nowadays, the old village is mostly demolished, but a small part was preserved to serve as an Exhibition Center, and there is some landscape greening around the preserved part. This project aims to take the urban image and the feature of old military dependents villages into consideration, combing the geometric pattern of city blocks, with the old village impressions, such as narrow alley, anti-aircraft shelter, and pitched roof.

Green Shelter Inspired by the small defense pillboxes in military dependents villages, there will be a Green Shelter, embraced by a elevated grassy slope.

Installation Art display area Inducing the visitors to go around, and maybe pause in front of some display boards, which are installed within the wood array and will introduce the history of the military dependents village. Fountain Plaza The visitors and residents of this neighborhood can refresh themselves, during summer time, when the fountain will be unlocked. In the winter time however, small activities can be organized here.

The designed pattern symbolizes the city blocks, accompanied by the tree arrays and vast meadow, creating an open extensive view. The open meadow is scattered with many interesting facilities and intriguing landscapes, giving the visitors, especially kids, unexpected surprises.

Tower C project is located on Brooklyn where with a adjacent church and Pratt Institute on the diagonal corner. The design is meant to pursue the integration of high-rise design which includes clustered modular units design, passive design and heating, ventilation and air conditioning design. The multi-layer organic cluster creates the self-shading and private terrace and semi-public opened green space for family units. It has diverse unit types and aggregates variously to form the organic cluster.

This project is located in the second Teaching Area of Tunghai University and it covers the open space between three buildings Music and Fine Art Centre (MFAC), College of Management Building, and Student Residence Hall. The key intent of this project is to establish the connection and unity between three distinctly different buildings, in terms of functionality. The design will focus on the relationship between buildings, environment, and users that further redefine the spatial order and connection.

The three buildings are all constructed with exposed concrete. Among them, the new landmark of Tunghai University, the MFAC, is famous for its rhombic-shaped grid element which echoes the Luce Chapel, the old landmark and renowned beacon of Tunghai University. The designed program reveals the concept of integrating the solid concrete mass with the void/soft natural elements. For example, the student square serves to link the MFAC and the Student Residence Hall which allows student to pass through, to repose, or to relax easily. The surroundings also replace the hardscape with the vast pasture on which students can execute performances or exhibitions. Furthermore, by utilizing the mass terrain, and combining it with grass slopes, steps, and wooden platforms, the void empty space can transform as a greenish social space. Two parallel arrays of deciduous trees not only serve as the guide way, bringing the students into the nature and experience its charms, but also separate the living area and study area to avoid the unnecessary interference.

The proposed project combines the efficiency of the kit-of-parts approach with the flexibility of the pop-out concept to create a unique and playful modular habitat. The majority of the components from the original shipping container are creatively repurposed and redesigned to add value to the habitat units. The versatility of the project as a modular system enables Pop-up Habitat to be constructed anywhere around the world and adapt to its physical and environmental context (e.g. climate, urban context, etc.) The overall envelop of the Pop-up Habitat consists of the corrugated steel exterior cladding and structural insulated panel interior wall system. The original steel cladding from the container is modified (i.e. cut, folded, and/or perforated) to perform several functions including rain screen, exterior operable shading louvers, and solar wall (i.e. solar air heating and cooling system). The interior wall system is configured as rigid thermal insulation sandwiched between structural wood panels.

The proposed service modules functions not only as mechanical, electrical and plumbing distribution room but also as semi-outdoor community space for 6-8 units. Solar panels are integrated with the faรงade of the service module for electricity generation and rain water is collected and filtered for irrigating the community gardens. Each habitat units has its own compact heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration system (i.e. decentralized HVAC&R) and the service units supply and collect energy and waste to and from the units.

The proposed facade integrates topologically optimized structural framing and membrane based dynamic insulation skin. The topology optimization ensures that the volume and weight of the steel framing are minimized without compromising in structural performance. The multi-layered ETFE membrane which is extremely lightweight, durable, and transparent, serve as an alternative to the traditional aluminum and glass cladding system.

Buildings constructed with a variety of building materials consume energy throughout its stages of manufacture, installation and use. The high-rise building visualized for this proposal is imagined to be a large building enclosed in a membrane hybrid facade system that wraps the building. ETFE was identified as the main choice of material owing to its resemblance of creating a skin-like aesthetic appeal. Idealy, the most favorable material as an alternative to the traditional aluminum and glass facade system should account for the reduction in both embodied energy as well as the energy consumed during its entire life cycle. The proposed high-rise building in Brooklyn employs ETFE cushions as the primary building material to skin the building envelope. Although ETFE has a higher embodied energy per unit mass than glass, the use of ETFE significantly reduced the mass per unit area of material in the structure. Essentially, a standard three layer of ETFE cushion provides better insulation properties that standard triple-glazed glass.

Owing to their high flexibility, ETFE facade systems can accommodate higher deflections than a traditional aluminum and glass facade system eliminating the need for expansions joints and other such work-arouds. Topo-Skin facade can outperform conventional glass and aluminum frame facade system in terms of visual and thermal comfort. ETFE membrane has excellent light transmittance, chemically inert, and extremely durable. Furthermore, ETFE membranes have self-cleaning capabilities, shatter proof and fire resistant. The air layers between each layer functions as thermal insulation which can be dynamically adjusted by the degree of inflation. By dynamically adjusting the level of inflation it is possible to vary the thermal insulation based on seasonal changes, building orientation, and daily temperature fluctuation. The dynamic insulation will particular be advantageous at seasonal or daily temperature transitions. The opacity of the skin can also be controlled using translucent or opaque gas. 61 62

Han River Hangang is much more than a river flowing through Seoul. For thousands of years, Hangang has been the central settlement, the cultural hub, and the symbol of prosperity to all Koreans. On the other hand, Yeouido is the manifestation of Korea’s economic growth based on the control of water. However, the rapid urban growth resulted in the loss of the special cultural and scenic ties between Hangang and the habitants of the city.

Yeoui-Naru and Hwangpo-Dot The revival of the historical and cultural value of the traditional Hangang Yeoui-Naru (Yeoui ferry terminal) needs to stem from understanding that the old Yeoui-Naru was a ‘place’ for social and cultural exchange above merely a means of transportation. In a sense, the Yeoui-Naru was both a familiar and special element of the Hangang scenery. In this context, ‘Hangang Heritage’ strives to continue the legacy of the old Yeoui-Naru, using the form, color, and texture of the traditional Hwangpo sail as an inspiration for restoring the past scenic experience.

In the closed state, the Hwangpo sail membrane visually expands the mass of the terminal building, making Yeoi-Naru the scenic icon of Han river.
The Hwangpo sail can function as a flexible boundary that defines zones for various programs and events around the promenade, the water features, and the gardens.
The fabric membrane of the Hwangpo sail opens and closes as the ships arrive and leave the docks, effectively becoming an operable gate for the ferries.
In the fully opened state, the Hwangpo sails disappear and present to the visitors an unobstructed panoramic view towards the Han River and the surrounding cityscape.

Reinterpretation of Hwangpo-Dot The Hwangpo sail which loosely wraps around the terminal building is the central feature of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hangang Heritageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; proposal. The sail creates a translucent and permeable boundary between the terminal building and ships, effectively expanding its presence within the Han river scenery. By opening or closing the fabric membrane, the semi-open space between the building envelope and the sail can be reconfigured and adapted to various programs and events.
