Phil Yang: 'This is a good franchise!'
A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections offers big rewards for the right people
Is it time to change careers? Are you looking for variety with no two days the same? Do you want a business where your services will be in constant demand? If so, John Goodrum of A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections wants to hear from you.
‘Our franchisees come from all sorts of backgrounds: IT, finance, engineering and marketing, as well as construction. You certainly don’t need to be a builder – that’s a totally different skill set. You’ll have specialist equipment to check power outlets, moisture levels and all matters related to dwellings. We’ll train you to know what to look for and identify the issues, but you don’t have to fix them – you can leave that to builders, plumbers or electricians.’
Originating in Canada, A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections now operates in 19 countries. It came to New Zealand in 2013 and now has 17 franchisees here, with demand for many more. ‘Being part of an international franchise means that each of our inspectors has to go through dedicated online training which leads to a qualification from an independent training body,’ John explains.
‘After passing this course, there’s a full week of in-house training then on-the-job experience with a qualified inspector. As a result, our franchisees are able to issue a NZ Standards certificate after every inspection to NZS4306:2005 (Residential Property Inspection).’
Big demand for inspections
Even during a pandemic, the housing market never stands still – but people are getting more cautious. As a result, house inspection is a fastgrowing market and, John says, whatever your background, A Buyer’s Choice has opportunities right now in main cities and larger towns throughout the country.
‘A rigorous home inspection is of huge value to both sellers and purchasers,’ says John. ‘Having a proper inspection can help facilitate a faster sale for a better price; it provides a purchaser with an unbiased third-party opinion of the condition of their possible purchase; and it helps to prevent agreements falling through.
‘It will also highlight any potential problems and protect sellers from over-inflated estimates of essential repair work, while alleviating much of the stress about nasty surprises after purchase.
‘However, all these benefits only apply when the inspection is properly carried out – and there’s no legal requirement for building inspectors in NZ to be qualified as such,’ John points out. ‘That’s why A Buyer’s Choice franchisees are in such demand.’
As much work as I want
Phil Yang has owned his franchise for just over a year, and says he is ‘very satisfied’ already. Phil spent 20 years in financial management and spent a year researching opportunities before contacting A Buyer’s Choice. ‘My first career was chosen by my parents – this time, I wanted to choose my own direction,’ he smiles. ‘With no previous experience, I needed the very comprehensive training and support that the franchise offers.
‘The specialist software is also very valuable – it helps me produce a very full and professional report. Some vendors commission reports then leave them on show at an open home, and buyers are so impressed that even if they don’t buy that property, they will contact me to do other inspections for them.
’ Phil says that a lot of enquiries for inspections come from the company’s website, as well as his own marketing to the Chinese community in his Albany territory. ‘But most important is doing a good job very carefully. Phil Yang: ‘This is a good franchise!’
Satisfied clients will often ask for three or four inspections before they buy and they refer me to friends and relatives too. My decision to buy this franchise was correct.’
Low investment, high potential
John Goodrum says, ‘A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections franchise is a work-from-home opportunity which offers you the chance to change careers, own your own business and become your own boss. Territories are available from $32,500-$65,000 +gst.
‘For the right people who are willing to put in the effort, earnings of between $100,000 and $300,000 are perfectly realistic once established. This is a chance to fulfil your dreams of self-employment, job security and financial gain without the high risk and uncertainty of going it alone. Call me to find out more.’
Phil Yang sums up: ‘This is a good franchise. Just work hard towards what you want and you can make it.’
