Aimee Spinley is one of the team helping Sandeep Kathiriya to grow his business in Northland

That’s the question asked by Aimee Spinley, the Customer Relationship Manager for Paramount in Northland. ‘You don’t need to live in one of the big cities to build a flourishing commercial cleaning business – we have so many opportunities here in Northland, and in other regions too, far away from the high house prices and impossible traffic.’
One of those who has taken the plunge is Sandeep Kathiriya. Whilst studying business management in Auckland, he undertook some parttime cleaning work to help pay his way. ‘I could see the potential of the sector,’ he recalls. ‘I moved on to become manager of a service station in Dargaville but, as I was keen to increase my earnings and eventually own my own business, I looked around for evening work.’
Sandeep responded to advertisements from Paramount and other cleaning companies. ‘I liked what Paramount was doing. They presented everything well and I felt they were completely honest, so I took on a part-time franchise. They always delivered what they said they’d deliver, and there have never been any broken promises – not ever,’ he adds with emphasis.
Welcome back - no worries
When Sandeep left Dargaville and moved to Whangarei four years ago for personal reasons, Paramount told him to stay in touch. ‘Paramount has opportunities virtually everywhere in the country, so when the time was right, I contacted them and they said, “Welcome back!” I was so pleased – I immediately took on contracts for a couple of sites and after a year have expanded to four. I now have a team of five servicing these sites, and have just bought back Dargaville so I have three people working there as well. It’s becoming quite a sizeable operation.’
Sandeep believes there are even greater things to come, both for him and for Paramount in general. ‘I would never have considered this kind of business without their support,’ he says. ‘Paramount has the brand and systems which attract clients, and they have big national contracts which an individual could never achieve. Reputation is everything in this business and Paramount look after the two most important things – their franchisees and their clients.
‘The company has been highly pro-active helping me expand. One of the best aspects is that none of the franchisees have to worry about invoicing or debt collection – the company handles all that, leaving you free to concentrate on providing a high quality service. It’s a huge help. I used to be a part-time franchisee with a small career, and now, thanks to them, I have a growing full-time business.’

‘I know I’m biased, but there is a quality of life in the regions that is like no other. We would love to entice more people to think outside the box and come and see what Northland, and other areas outside the urban limits, have to offer. You can start small and grow as big as you like.’
