Touch Up Guys franchise needs new owner to net rewards

I can do that! That’s what John Davidson thought when he first read about Touch Up Guys 21 years ago, and he was right. ‘I’ve made a very comfortable living out of my franchise since I bought it in 2000 but, at my age, fishing is becoming my priority so my Waikato territory is on the market.’

John had previously been a builder, ‘But I got totally fed up with the amount of paperwork, so I decided to do something completely different and, despite my lack of knowledge of the vehicle industry, decided on Touch Up Guys. I felt that if I had issues or problems there would be someone who could help me out, and that’s been the case ever since.

‘There’s always been great camaraderie between the franchisees, and it says a lot for the franchise that the main reason people have sold in the end is age! We need some fresh new faces. There’s plenty of work – if I bothered to advertise, I’d be swamped – and here in Hamilton alone we could probably have two or three vans on. I have a big marketplace just waiting for the right guys or girls, and it’s the same in plenty of other places, too.’

Earn very well indeed

Touch Up Guys is a mobile service that repairs bumper scuffs, stone chips, scratches and other damage to virtually any vehicle. Franchisees service both commercial and private customers, and as Martin Smith points out, the ever-growing numbers of vehicles means big opportunities for new franchisees in many parts of the country.

‘You are going to be in permanent demand in this industry and can earn very well indeed,’ says Martin, who is New Zealand franchisor for Touch Up Guys. ‘Franchisees like John have found a good balance of income and lifestyle, but it’s fair to say that there’s lots more work out there.’

No experience needed

A complete Touch Up Guys package including marketing, equipment, training and van costs between $88,000 and $120,000 +gst, depending on whether the vehicle is leased or bought, explains Martin. ‘There’s three weeks of intensive training, learning the specialist equipment, systems and techniques, then at least a month on-the-job support.

‘You don’t need experience – our highly-advanced equipment makes colour matching a straightforward process – but you do need an eye for detail and the confidence to sell your services when you first get started. After that, the sky’s the limit.’

After 21 years, John has no doubts. ‘This is a terrific franchise. If you can develop a rapport with your customers, take pride in your work and enjoy variety, come and have a look –especially if you’re in the Waikato. Give Martin a call – because I have fish to catch!’
