Jim’s Test & Tag works for anyone with a will to succeed

When Rachael Anderson bought her Jim’s Test & Tag business, she was quite unfazed by taking on what has often been thought of as a predominantly male-oriented role. ‘It was the right fit for me,’ she says, simply. ‘Two years on, it’s giving me the life I want and I’d certainly do it again.’

Rachael had previously worked in retail security for 20 years. ‘There are big similarities in the industries: it’s all compliance-based, we have processes and procedures, we’re keeping people safe, and the law is on our side. The big advantage is that I’m dealing with managers and business owners now, not criminals!’

Jim’s Test & Tag provides testing and tagging services to electrical equipment in workplaces throughout the country, as well as fire extinguisher inspections and sales. All fire inspections are in full accordance with NZS4503:2005 and, since new Health and Safety regulations came into force in 2016, there is no shortage of new customers and repeat business.

All Kiwi businesses must take steps to ensure their workplace is safe for everyone and electrical equipment needs to be inspected at least annually, with building site and workshop equipment requiring checks every three or six months. Growing demand means that Jim’s Test & Tag is looking for additional franchisees in regions throughout New Zealand.

The investment of $55,000 +gst covers full training (you don’t need to be an electrician) and everything you need except a suitable vehicle, which can be leased.

Good reliable income

Rachael felt that the test and tagging industry offered her a great way to get ahead in life. ‘I had been looking around for a couple of years and when the Hastings franchise came on the market, I felt it would be easy to slide across into. It was just the right place, right time for me.

‘It was a bit scary owning my own business at first, but the training was excellent – and having a good client base to build from gave me a cushion of security. There was no problem with getting a loan, either – Jim’s Test & Tag has a good reputation with the banks.

‘Once I got started, my business grew naturally through word-of-mouth and the contacts I started making. Our Call Centre also provides new leads right when I need them, so I’ve never been short of work. It provides me with a good, reliable income and has the advantage of being flexible – you can dictate your hours to suit.

‘And being female doesn’t make any difference as long as you are personable, determined and able to get on with people. I’d recommend it as “family friendly” – you could take it on and prosper with children of any age. Call Peter Mahon and find out more.’
