The Time Is Now
Pack & Send franchisees all over the country enjoy massive growth
Rita Krishna and Amit Ram have been so successful in their Pack & Send store in Manukau that they are opening a second outlet within three years of starting their first. ‘It was always our goal, and I’m delighted we have managed to achieve it so soon,’ says Rita. ‘Pack & Send is a business model that has presented us with so many opportunities, and I love being my own boss, too.’
Rita had been working for a freight forwarder for three years before deciding to work for herself. ‘I knew the industry, and I knew how fast it was growing, but I didn’t know about running a business,’ she admits. ‘My investigations led me to Franchise New Zealand magazine, where I read about Pack & Send. The brand has a great track record, so I decided to buy the Manukau store. Looking back, I can definitely say I would not have gone into business without the franchise – the risk is so much lower with a good brand, training and support, not to mention access to all the suppliers and deals that Pack & Send provides.’
Growing and growing
Pack & Send is a one-stop-shop for sending virtually ‘anything anywhere’ – offering the widest range of courier, freight and packaging services in New Zealand. Franchisees are not couriers themselves; they operate from retail premises, with a van enabling them to collect items from private or commercial customers such as online retailers and galleries. The company also has a strong reputation in the fragile, large, awkward, or valuable end of the shipping market – ‘The four swear words of freight,’ laughs NZ franchisor Matthew Everest.
‘The increases in volume over the last couple of years demonstrate how much we are appealing to the freight, courier and e-commerce sectors. The first half of this financial year saw a 34 percent growth in group revenue, and a 20 percent increase in customer transactions for the same period in the previous year. Last year was already 15 percent up overall, and although I’m loath to use the term “Covid-resistant”, our sales for August 2021 when we were all in lockdown were only 5 percent down on the previous August. In the following two months, revenue bounced back to 15 percent above the same period last year.’
Office hours
Pack & Send franchisees might be busy, but they’re not working all hours – unlike many opportunities, it’s mostly a 9-5, Monday-Friday business. Rita confirms this. ‘Owning our Pack & Send has provided me with a balance in my life and gives me the flexibility to enjoy quality time with my family. I am living the dream in that I own a business I love working in. This is actually my happy place! ‘You need passion and drive to be successful. No two days are the same – you can have a slow morning, then customers queueing in the street that afternoon. But the franchise gives you the systems to cope when it’s busy and the knowledge of what to do if it’s not.’
For multi-taskers
Although Rita has freight experience, Pack & Send franchisees come from all walks of life. ‘I don’t think you need a freight or logistics background. Being a multi-tasker is beneficial, with lots of organisational skills and the ability to delegate to your staff, but if you have the right attitude, everything will fall into place. And you’ll be greatly supported by a highly professional team at Head Office who work tirelessly in the background so we franchisees can do what we do best: grow a great business – or even two!’
Matthew wants to hear from others who share Rita’s drive and determination to succeed. ‘We have new stores in Whangarei and Papanui, with Papakura and Christchurch Central opening in the next few months. All in all, it paints a pretty rosy picture for our franchisees, and we still have more opportunities available in many parts of New Zealand. An investment of around $210,000 +gst provides an all-inclusive, turnkey operation, so call me and find out more. The time is now.’
