The Local Guys is looking for three NZ master franchisees for Test & Tag, Pest Control and Cleaning

Looking to put your business or management experience to good use? Want to leverage your skills and earn more by helping others grow? Then a master franchise from The Local Guys might be just what you want.

Over the past 10 years, The Local Guys have created a successful business formula from their South Australian base. With the company now firmly established, they are now seeking three master franchisees in New Zealand to grow and support the franchise here.

Founders Jarrad and Stacey Goulding know franchising inside out. The couple owned two franchised juice bar outlets before moving into a restaurant business. ‘Those experiences taught us a lot,’ says Jarrad. ‘One was a really good example of what a really strong franchise does well, the other a prime example of what a franchise can do wrong. They were invaluable lessons.’

The couple moved on to the electrical industry and started a test and tag business as a sideline, certifying equipment for commercial clients. ‘It grew fast, and our experience made us realise we had a very good franchisable business of our own. The test and tag business made way more money and gave us a far better work/life balance than either the restaurant or juice bar, so we thought, ‘We’ve done the journey, we know what to do, let’s franchise this and give other people the same opportunity.’

Jarrad & Stacey: The Local Guys

Applying the formula

Despite launching in 2019 just before Covid hit, Jarrad and Stacey – a qualified accountant – now have 40 franchisees spread throughout Australia using the company’s well-proven systems to generate new business and recurring income.

‘Having done that, we realised the potential of the service industries,’ says Jarrad. ‘The profit margins are good, you don’t have huge overheads or loans, and there are no landlords hanging over you. We thought, what if we applied the same formula to other services?’

One of the first franchisees of The Local Guys had previously been involved with cleaning, and could see the value that the company’s streamlined processes could bring in that area.

‘His experience was invaluable in getting us going, and he now runs the cleaning division as master franchisee for Australia,’ says Jarrad.

‘After just two years he has seven franchisees already and several more in the pipeline. That’s the sort of opportunity that exists for our New Zealand master franchisees, too.’

Another franchisee with experience of pest control led to the establishment of a third service for The Local Guys. Launched at the end of 2022, it has already generated a large number of clients, both corporate and domestic. ‘So far we have six franchisees who are all very busy,’ Jarrad says, ‘so pest control is another division ready for a master franchisee to launch it in New Zealand.’

Do you have what it takes?

With their formula well-proven, The Local Guys are now seeking three master licensees in New Zealand for Test & Tag, Pest Control and Cleaning. ‘These could be individuals, or it could be a company looking for expansion,’ says Jarrad. ‘As a master franchisee, you’ll enjoy multiple revenue streams, from large upfront franchise fees to ongoing royalties from franchisees, and revenue from national contract clients.

‘We’re looking for a proven track record in business of at least five years, an entrepreneurial approach, and drive to help others succeed in starting their own business. Previous industry experience is not required, as we will put successful candidates through our master franchisee training. We know the system is replicable because we’ve already done it twice!’

‘With a master franchise, we’ve done the hard work for you. You can establish a well-developed brand in a new market, and we’ll provide all the systems and processes that we’ve spent years perfecting to help you build a network of up to 150 franchises across the country.’

Shared values, shared knowledge

Jarrad says it’s also important to share the values of The Local Guys. ‘We are a family-run business with no hierarchical corporate structure. We want to provide genuine value to our franchisees, which is why we have flat fees and fair franchise agreements.

‘From our previous experience, we know that ongoing support and a sense of community are critical, so we have Zoom meetings every six weeks with all our franchisees and masters and a programme of individual calls to help them improve their business. We talk about current performance, conversion rates from the leads we provide through our call centre, how to increase average transaction value, and so on. In turn, master franchisees appoint new franchisees, train them and provide local support, and develop national contracts.’

The investment required to establish a master franchise with The Local Guys is $245,000 +gst. In addition, the successful candidates will need $50,000 in working capital to establish their Support Centre.

‘The returns will be commensurate with growth and entrepreneurial flair,’ says Jarrad, ‘not to mention the even deeper reward of helping people succeed in their own business.
