Welcome to the
Barossa
This world-class wine district is one of a kind, where rich European heritage lives on, a down-to-earth Australian spirit is fostered and a wonderfully diverse range of attractions are continuously on show in this relaxed, rural setting. Whether it’s a romantic escape you seek, an outdoor adventure or just the opportunity to relax and unwind, the Barossa serves up an assortment of holiday options. While its proximity to Adelaide makes a day trip tempting, to really experience the region you will need to book some accommodation and stay for a few days. A visit to the Barossa is a taste of the good life. Premium wines, including the world famous Barossa Valley Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, regional produce and acclaimed restaurants are all offered together to provide a culinary experience second to none. The picturesque rolling hills of the Barossa Ranges overlook a colourful patchwork of vineyards and picture book villages, dotted with historic churches, stone buildings and cottages beckoning visitors to explore. The Barossa’s rich natural
environment is all within easy reach, boasting lush trails, reserves and forests – it’s easy to understand why the early pioneers saw it as their own ‘Garden of Eden’. The Barossa is one of the world’s greatest wine regions, renowned for its food and wine, cultural experiences and easy-going lifestyle. The hospitality of the local community is just as memorable, from the warm welcome of a cellar door, bed and breakfast or shop owner, to the friendly local who’ll help you find your way and let you in on hidden local gems. It’s easy to feel at home in the Barossa. This Visitor Guide introduces you to the Barossa and will help you plan your journey and stay. If you’re looking for extra information visit www.barossa.com or download the free Connect Barossa smart phone app.

Fire danger The Barossa is susceptible to bushfires. On days of high fire danger you need to think about where you will be for the day and what you would do in the event of a fire. During Fire Danger Season there are strict conditions for lighting a fire, including a campfire. The Fire Danger Season is generally from 1 December to 30 April (however, this period can be adjusted according to seasonal conditions). All fires are prohibited on Total Fire Ban Days.

When a Total Fire Ban is declared, all fires are completely banned. Fire ban information is broadcast on radio and television from 4pm the previous day and applies for 24 hours (midnight to midnight). Further information can be obtained from the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1300 362 361 or the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au. Severe penalties apply for the lighting or maintaining of fires on Fire Ban Days.

Days of high fire danger
Staying safe
These are days when temperatures, high winds (particularly north and north-westerly winds with low humidity) are predicted. On these days avoid activities that can place you in areas of high bushfire risk. Instead of bushwalking, go swimming or visit local attractions in low fire risk areas.
Phone 13 14 44 for police assistance or phone 000 for all emergencies. See the town facilities directory at the back of this guide for a list of phone numbers for local police stations.
BUSHFIRE DANGER IN THE BAROSSA
Holiday bushfire safety tips BE AWARE ON HIGH FIRE RISK DAYS... When holidaying, always check with the local council, Police, CFS or the media to help you decide if you will travel through or to a high risk area on a Total Fire Ban day. If you do decide to travel, ensure that you and your vehicle are prepared in the event of a fire.
Image Amanda Slater • Flickr
1. HAVE A PLAN The decision of whether to stay or to leave during high fire risk days is critical. If you decide to leave you should do so early. Have alternative routes worked out that lead away from bushfire risk areas.
2. RESPONSIBILITIES
Bushfire Information Hotline 1300 362 361 (TTY 133 677) www.cfs.sa.gov.au
Be aware of restrictions on the use of gas BBQs and campfires during the fire danger season and on total fire ban days, for further information contact the CFS.
3. PLAN AHEAD On days of Total Fire Bans, it is best to postpone a trip into the bush since the risk of a fire starting and growing rapidly is extremely high.

The best things to
see & do
There are too many fabulous things to see and do in the Barossa to list them all. Here are just 10 options to whet your appetite: 14
barossa.com | Section name
Cycling through vineyards, Bethany
1. Taste a top drop
5. Soak up some history
The name ‘Barossa’ is synonymous with great wine, particularly great Shiraz, and a visit to the Barossa wouldn’t be complete without calling into at least one of the region’s cellar doors. Create your own wine-tasting itinerary by picking and choosing which wineries to visit or for a planned approach, follow the Para Road Wine Path – a trail that links four of Tanunda’s well-known wineries.
With a strong Lutheran heritage, the Barossa is home to a couple dozen historic churches, whose spires mark the spiritual centres of the community. The lovingly preserved churches and historic cemeteries dotted throughout the region all have their own stories.
2. Grab some local produce The Barossa serves up a smorgasbord of rewarding culinary experiences… artisan butchers, bakers and a cheesemaker producing delicious goods. Those on a short timeframe can pack the best wine and foodie delights into a day’s exploration with the Butcher, Baker, Winemaker or Barossa Cheese and Wine trails. For more information go to www.barossa.com or www.barossacheese.com.au. Of course, on Saturday mornings there is the Barossa Farmers Market at Angaston, as well as the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market.
3. Visit Seppeltsfield Road Drive down the remarkable palm treelined Seppeltsfield Road and find luxury accommodation, 19 wineries (both big name and boutique), fine dining options and a slice of history. The beautiful stretch of road is named after the Seppelt family, who played a significant role in defining the Barossa’s early history. The Seppeltsfield Winery, built by the family in 1851, is best seen on a guided tour where you can taste some of the rare wines from the cellars.
4. Get on your bike The Barossa climate and terrain supports a broad range of cycling options for road and mountain bike enthusiasts, as well as those who want to tour the Barossa at a slower pace. Work on the Jack Bobridge Track – a cycling/walking link between Gawler and Tanunda – is currently underway, expected to be officially opened in early 2013. The Nurioopta to Angaston section of this track is already completed. A high-quality sevenkilometre rail trail, the track follows the old rail easement and has a smooth bitumen surface. The Gawler Rivers Path (Tapa Pariara) offers a chance to cycle or take a leisurely stroll along an eight-kilometre track as it meanders along the North and South Para rivers. Interpretive panels give an insight into the history of the area, native birds and vegetation.
6. Smell the roses (and lavender) at Lyndoch There are a few places where you can smell Barossa’s natural beauty. The Rose Garden at Lyndoch Hill is a sanctuary for any rose appreciator. When it was opened, in 2002 by HM Queen Elizabeth II, it was the largest collection of roses in the Southern Hemisphere. Breathe in a different scent at the largest lavender farm in SA, the Lyndoch Lavender Farm. A walk through the colourful gardens will introduce you to more than 90 lavender plant varieties.
7. Try a local beer There are two craft breweries in the Barossa. The Barossa Brewery & Brasserie in Tanunda, open Thursday–Sunday, serves a range of up to seven beers, changing seasonally, all brewed on-site. The brewer and chef match the best of the Barossa’s fresh produce to the all natural beers. Meanwhile, in Greenock, at the Barossa Brewing Company the beers are brewed in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516, known as the Reinheitsgebot. The beers are available at the Stockwell Hotel.
8. Live like a king Take a riverside bath, savour a Barossa wine on the verandah of a Georgian-style mansion that was built in 1856 or experience fine dining down in the cellar… all this and more is available at one of the new accommodation heroes of the Barossa, Kingsford Homestead.
9. Get up close to some art Wander through the sculpture park at the Mengler Hill Lookout, spend some time in the Barossa Regional Gallery (or one of the region’s other galleries), browse the work of local and visiting artists, and perhaps pick out something to take home. It’s also worth planning ahead for the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival in August when the artists of the Barossa take the spotlight.
10. Shop to your heart’s content Hours can be spent trawling the Barossa’s shopping opportunities for that special something. Angaston, Gawler, Nuriootpa and Tanunda have lots of options, while Lyndoch and Williamstown are also worth investigating. Yaldara Estate cellar,

Barossa food exhibits integrity, quality, diversity and heritage. The produce reflects the region’s strong traditions and rich heritage, mixed with modern innovation and a passion for quality. Self-sufficient and hard-working, the Barossa’s early European settlers brought their food traditions with them, infusing the region’s cuisine with a strong German influence. Preserving, smoking and baking were a part of everyday life and remain important elements of the food served today. Visit a Barossa butcher and find mettwurst, lachsschinken and smoked ham or drop in to one of the local bakeries for a traditional loaf of bread or some Bienenstich or Streuselkuchen (yeast cakes). At specialist food outlets, cellar doors and supermarkets the distinctly Barossa flavours can be found in pickled onions, gherkins, olives, olive oil, egg noodles, cheese, dried fruit and a variety of chutneys, pickles and preserves.
Award-winning experiences Appellation at Marananga is widely regarded as one of the finest regional restaurants in Australia, offering fine dining inspired by fresh food, wine and produce from the Barossa region. Jacob’s Restaurant at the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre was awarded the 2010 and 2011 South Australian Tourism Award for ‘Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services’ and for ‘Best Tourism Winery’. It has also received the 2012 South Australian Tourism Award for ‘Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services’ and, as a result, has been inducted into the state’s Tourism Hall of Fame for this category. It’s open every day for lunch, serving up contemporary Australian cuisine, using quality local produce married with a selection of premium wines.
‘Australia’s Best Pizza’, made by ‘Australia’s Best Pizza maker’, Damon De Ruiter, can be sampled at Angaston’s 40’s Café. Meanwhile, Tanunda’s fermentAsian has been acclaimed by journalists and food critics across the country for its fresh south-east Asian flavours. The Hentley Farm Restaurant, at Seppeltsfield, is the newest edition to the fine dining offering and has quickly established itself as a popular dining destination.
Maggie Beer – Barossa’s famous foodie Maggie Beer is a self-taught cook and one of Australia’s most celebrated food identities. Maggie and husband Colin Beer moved to the Barossa in 1973, where they began farming pheasants on their property near Nuriootpa. Colin was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study game bird breeding in Europe and America and following their return, they opened a farm shop to sell the game birds they were breeding. This humble shop soon grew into the famed Pheasant Farm Restaurant and now the Maggie Beer Farm Shop. Maggie Beer products are available throughout the world in Japan, the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and the US, and widely available in the Barossa, including at the Maggie Beer Farm Shop, which is located between Tanunda and Nuriootpa.
Barossa Food Incorporated Barossa Food Inc represents an enthusiastic group of regional food producers that joined forces and established the first legallyunderpinned regional food brand in Australia. Barossa Food Inc guarantees that products meet stringent criteria, observing health requirements, rationality and traditional production methods.
By protecting the cultural integrity of these goods, the Barossa, as a region, is also protected. Barossa Food Inc is a true celebration of the region’s food culture and provides a support network to allow local producers to proudly share its products with the world. Look for Barossa Food Inc licensed produce, which proudly displays the logo, to taste the best of the Barossa – they can be found at the SA Company Store, Blond Coffee in Angaston, the Barossa Visitor Centre, selected wineries and local supermarkets.
A culinary destination The Barossa is home to a great selection of restaurants, cafés and bakeries, all providing delicious menus, with food made fresh to order in the kitchens and the majority featuring produce from around the Barossa. A growing number of cellar door dining options are also popping up, so book a light lunch at a winery to break up a day of wine-tasting.

wine companies of all shapes and sizes. Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling have led the way as regional heroes, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Grenache, Viognier, Semillon and Tawny all contributing to the Barossa’s standing as one of the world’s great wine regions. With such a diversity of growing conditions and soil types across both valleys, and vineyards that have been tended by hand for many generations, you are bound to find a wine to call your own.

Our living
History
S Smith & Son horsedrawn cart, Angaston
A historic story can be found around every corner in the Barossa. Before South Australia was colonised, the Peramangk Aboriginal people roamed through most of the Barossa region, sharing the northern part with their Ngadjuri neighbours. When Colonel William Light first visited the region 175 years ago he named the ‘Lynedoch Vale’, after his ‘esteemed friend Lord Lynedoch’, and the hills the ‘Barrosa Range’ after the site of Lynedoch’s victory at the 1813 Battle of Barrosa. Both names were subsequently mis-spelt on maps resulting in the unique local names that are used today. In the late 1830s, George Fife Angas, Chairman of the South Australian Company, employed gifted linguist and mineralogist Johannes Menge to explore the local colony.
Heritage trails The Barossa has several trails that link key heritage sites throughout the region, taking you on a journey through the back roads and past impressive churches, humble slab-sided
barns, pug cottages, steep-roofed farmhouses and houses built from locally quarried bluestone, ironstone, sandstone and marble. For more information on Barossa’s heritage visit www.barossa.com or contact a local library or accredited Visitor Information Centre. The Barossa, Gawler and Kapunda libraries have a vast collection of historic texts, regional information and family ancestry.
Church Hill State Heritage Walking Tour, Gawler The Church Hill area was at the core of Colonel Light’s 1839 Gawler town plan. Due to its historical significance and the overall state of preservation, this area was declared a State Heritage Area in 1985, the third such heritage area proclaimed in South Australia. A wide assortment of dwellings and outbuildings reflect the grand to humble circumstances of the people who created the area during the 19th century. The trail tours
original slate and bluestone kerbs, historic fire hydrants and many other treasures of yesteryear. Maps of this interesting 2.5 kilometre walk are available from the Gawler Visitor Information Centre.
Gawler Driving Tour The Gawler Driving Tour will take you on a journey where you’ll appreciate the extent that Gawler contributed to the development of the state. Marvel at Gawler’s merging of old with new on this signposted 22 kilometre route. Collect your tour brochure from the Gawler Visitor Information Centre and follow the brown and white road signs marked with a ‘10’.
Tanunda Heritage Trail Take a refreshing half-day stroll along the interpretive Tanunda Heritage Trail. Follow the markers around the streets of Tanunda and learn about the town’s unique culture and living history.

Retail therapy Enticing retail stores can be found along the main streets selling everything from fashion, jewellery, homewares and children’s clothing to art and health and beauty products. When you visit Angaston you can pick up a special gift at Barossa Birthstones, featuring precision cut gems, or pop into Abbey Antiques and Vintage Store to browse its collection of quirky pieces. Endota spa treatment, Rowland Flat
The Barossa’s art spaces The arts are part of the Barossa lifestyle and in most towns you’ll find art galleries and craft outlets to browse through and select a piece that captures your heart and imagination. Studios offer the chance to visit artisans working with heritage crafts and provide treasured links to the Barossa’s rich history. Many wineries, cafés and retail outlets feature permanent and touring exhibitions, merging the pleasures of food, wine and the arts.
36
The Barossa Regional Gallery in Tanunda plays host to an variety of local and touring exhibitions. Other permanent features include the Long Gallery, dedicated to work by local artists, and the Hill and Son Grand Organ restoration project. A true community effort, this project is a labour of love for local craftsmen and organ lovers and will see a truly magnificent instrument, originally built for the Adelaide Town Hall, restored to its former glory.

The Para Road Wine Path offers plenty of attractions and you’ll be surprised at how long this relatively short walk can take to complete. It provides a cross-country link to four Tanunda wineries (Langmeil Winery, Peter Lehmann Wines, Richmond Grove and Lambert Estate Wines) passing through vineyards clustered on the banks of the North Para River.
Family fun Stretch your legs at one of the Barossa’s numerous playgrounds and parks, including a skate park at Tolley Reserve, the Barossa Bushgardens and the Angaston Children’s Park in Murray Street. Dive into the public pools at Nuriootpa and Williamstown or head to ‘The Rex’ at Tanunda where two indoor pools offer all-weather fun. Older kids may be interested in some small wheel action at the Nuriootpa Skate Park or the Williamstown BMX Track. If the whole family is keen for a longer ride, check out the Jack Bobridge Track or the famous Mawson Trail. Show the kids how a family used to live in the Barossa by visiting the Herbig Family Tree in Springton, the first home of Johann Friedrich Herbig, his wife and two of their 16 children. Barossa Bowland and Mini Golf in Tanunda is a modern 12 lane bowling centre, with bumpers, glow-in-the-dark lighting and auto scoring. It’s also home to SA’s largest minigolf course. Don’t miss the Barossa Reservoir, which is held back by the Whispering Wall at Williamstown. This local landmark received its name due to its amazing acoustics. A whisper from one end of the wall is clearly heard at the other end, more than 100 metres away.
Includes a full buffet breakfast at the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort.
The Barossa’s golf courses are open seven days a week and visitors are welcomed with modestly-priced green fees. There’s also a chance you will bump into one of the region’s well-known winemakers on your round. The Barossa Valley Golf Club is a 6026 metre par 72 course with an ACR rating of 70.8. Because of its delightful bush country setting, this spacious golf course can give a feeling of truly ‘being away from it all’. Golf sets and carts are available for hire. Surrounded by two of Australia’s most recognised vineyards – Jacob’s Creek and St Hallett – and adjacent to the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort, the Tanunda Pines Golf Club is a superb regional golf course set in natural bushland. Features include 18 holes par 72, a fully-stocked Nike Concept Golf Shop, equipment rental and motorised carts, tuition and group clinics and a driving range.

Trails &
Parks
The rich, fertile Barossa is brimming with nature-based experiences. Discover lush trails, reserves and forests right on the doorstop of one of the world’s most famous wine regions. A nature lover’s utopia With its tranquil rolling hills and backdrop of vines, the Barossa is one of those rare places where you can immerse yourself in nature until late in the afternoon then enjoy some of the world’s best wines and mouth-watering local cuisine long into the evening.
Breakfast with kangaroos, Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park
Explore seasonally flowing creeks and granite outcrops at Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, which is situated between the towns of Tanunda and Angaston. Photographers will delight in the winter blooms of Red Heath in Hale Conservation Park while Warren Conservation Park is a true Mecca for bird enthusiasts with 130 native species, including parrots and honeyeaters.
Experience natural treasures at the gateway to the Barossa Just 40 minutes from Adelaide, Para Wirra Recreation Park awaits. With inspiring walking trails, scenic drives and abundant wildlife it’s the perfect place to unwind before your Barossa adventure. Pack a hamper of local produce and picnic among wildflowers and flourishing native bushland, including Pink and Blue gums and Golden Wattles.
SA’s iconic Heysen Trail winds through the Barossa’s stunning vineyards, beautiful conservation parks, rich farmland and historic towns on its 1200 kilometre journey from the Fleurieu Peninsula coast to the Flinders Ranges.
Bushwalking is one of the best ways to soak in the beauty of Para Wirra. Choose from a range of trails to suit all fitness levels. The 1.3 kilometre (return) Lizard Rock Nature Walk is great for family groups with easy grades and striking scenery. Or if you’re after a challenge conquer the 4.4 kilometre (return) Devils Nose Hike and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the South Para Gorge and beyond. More awe-inspiring vistas can be enjoyed with treks to Knob Lookout and the South Para River.
The region’s national parks offer many marvels, from fascinating wildlife to colourful displays of spring wildflowers.
You’ll find kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk and on a warm day you might see bearded dragons and sleepy lizards basking in the
sunshine. Keep your eyes peeled for the shy Short-beaked echidna, whose diggings can be found throughout the park, or see how many of Para Wirra’s native bird species you can identify.
Recapture the spirit of the gold rush A rich legacy of the 1868 gold rush can be seen in the many hand dug and dynamite blasted mine shafts left by fortune hunters who converged on the Barossa in their thousands more than a century ago. The Barossa Goldfields Historical Society, a Friends of Parks group, conducts private tours of these fascinating heritage sites. Visit www.communitywebs.org/ BarossaGoldfieldsHistoric for more details.

Barossa’s
towns
It’s the array of unique towns that shapes the Barossa character. The Barossa is a 1970 square kilometre region, encompassing the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.
52
barossa.com | barossa’s towns
Post office Public toilets Supplies/shopping Van dump point
The region contains the main communities of Angaston, Lyndoch, Gawler, Nuriootpa, Tanunda and Williamstown, as well as a collection of villages and hamlets: Bethany, Cockatoo Valley, Eden Valley, Greenock, Keyneton, Light Pass, Marananga, Seppeltsfield, Mount Pleasant, Penrice, Rowland Flat, Springton, Stockwell and Truro. Gawler, on the southern boundary of the Barossa, was among the first to be proclaimed a township in 1857 and has grown to become one of the Barossa’s biggest regional centres. The heritage value of these towns is fiercely protected, with strict limitations on where development can take place and are still a fascinating capture of history.

Williamstown
Cockatoo Valley

map reference C8
At the ‘southern gateway’ of the Barossa, Williamstown offers a welcome for visitors wanting to enjoy a distinctive Barossa historical experience. The original settlement of Victoria Creek transformed into Williamstown after the legendary sale of a team of horses for the parcels of land on which the hotels sit.
There’s tonnes of interesting history to be explored at Cockatoo Valley. The area is home to old gold diggings at the Barossa Goldfields and the Barossa Reservoir boasts some unusual acoustic conditions at the famous Whispering Wall.
The town originally functioned as a service centre for the already well-established pastoral and timber community of the Mount Crawford district. Located close to wineries, the Barossa reservoirs, conservation parks, Mount Crawford Forest and the Barossa Goldfields, Williamstown offers plenty to see and do, including cycling, walking and wildlife watching. This town is also home to the biggest mural in the Barossa, depicting aspects of life at Williamstown and surrounding areas since the earliest days of South Australian settlement. Along the main street visitors can browse the antique store, visit either of the two hotels, grab a bite to eat at the bakery or have a picnic/barbecue with your family at Colonist Corner or the Victoria Creek Reserve. Williamstown is also home to some fabulous wineries, including Domain Day, TeAro Estate and Linfield Road Wines. Visit www.williamstown.sa.au for more information.
The Whispering Wall is today in fact the retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir. Built between 1899 and 1903, the 36 metre high dam was a revolutionary engineering feat for its day and attracted attention from all over the world. What draws visitors to the Whispering Wall is its unique acoustic effects – words whispered at one end of the wall can be clearly heard at the other, more than 100 metres away. Children particularly love visiting the wall and testing its abilities. The reservoir is open 8am–5pm each day.
When the maps from the exploration were drawn up, the ranges were first named Barrosa Range (two r’s and one s). Later this was misspelt as Barrossa Range (with two r’s and two s’s). Later again it was misspelt as Barossa Range. This is the spelling still in use today. While the incorrect spelling was going on, the ‘e’ was dropped from Lynedoch Vale and it became Lyndoch Vale and later Lyndoch Valley. Today, Lyndoch is a small country town surrounded by farming properties with a population of 1800. The vineyards that surround the town are the main source of primary production. There are the usual sporting and community groups that provide the social activity, while several wineries and food outlets combine to offer ‘the first taste of the Barossa’ for visitors travelling to the region via Gawler or Williamstown.
Para Wirra Recreation Park lies to the south and is where you can catch glimpses of native wildlife. In fact, the abundance of birds helps explain the name – when a group of explorers in March 1838 spotted a big group of cockatoos they named it Cockatoo Valley.
Burge Family Winemakers
Lyndoch map reference D7 In December 1837, Colonel William Light camped in the Lyndoch Valley (opposite Kies Family Wines cellar door – next to the entrance to Burge Family Winemakers) and made a sketch of the valley and ranges, which he named Lynedoch Vale and Barrosa Ranges.
Celebrating 85 continuous vintages of Barossa winemaking in 2013. Winegrower Rick Burge handcrafts an enviable range of single vineyard wines, grown organically. Phone: (08) 8524 4644 www.burgefamily.com.au Advertisement on page 20

Gawler map reference A7 Home to a population of 20,000, Gawler is bound by rolling hills and is a major regional centre for commerce and business, due to its close proximity to Adelaide. Established in 1839, Gawler lays claim to being South Australia’s first country town and one of only two towns in the state planned by Surveyor-General, Colonel Light – the other being Adelaide. Settled on the banks of the North Para and South Para rivers, Gawler played a major role in the 19th century mining and agricultural booms and has blossomed into a town of broad streets, peaceful parklands and distinctive architecture. A number of significant buildings line the streets, including the Old Telegraph Office (built in 1860), which is the oldest public building still in use and home to the National Trust’s Museum – tours are available. The town’s pioneering spirit is reflected in its rich, historic architecture, which is best appreciated by joining a local on the Church Hill State Heritage Walking Tour or Historic Main Street Walking Tour. For residents and visitors alike, Gawler is growing in popularity and has a full range of leisure offerings, including an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a par 3 golf course and a cinema complex. The energetic will enjoy the eight-kilometre shared bicycle and walking path known as Tapa Pariara or Gawler River Path. For the adventurous, soar with the eagles above the township in a glider or fly in a motorised hang-glider, courtesy of the Adelaide Soaring Club. The newly renovated Gawler racetrack, with its picturesque rose gardens, lush green lawns and impressive new function centre, is home to the Gawler and Barossa cups and a fun day at the races. As for dining options, with 10 historic hotels, contemporary cafés and third generation local award-winning bakeries there are lots of choices.
Rowland Flat map reference D6 As the winemaking centre for the giant Orlando wine group, Rowland Flat is best known for its proximity to Jacob’s Creek – yes, there really is a creek – and the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, which contains an excellent restaurant and interactive winemaking display, as well as all the usual wine-tasting facilities.
Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, Rowland Flat
Johann Gramp, who arrived in the Barossa in 1847, initially planted his vines at Jacob’s Creek but his son, Gustav, moved the business in 1877 to Rowland Flat. Other wineries to visit are Liebichwein, Lou Miranda Estate and Jenke Vineyards, while a short distance away there’s the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort, adjacent to the Tanunda Pines Golf Club.
Bethany map reference E6 Settled in 1842, Bethany is an historical time capsule, with cottages built in the mid 1800s matching those the early pioneers left behind in Silesia. Although there’s been modern development, you can still see how the settlers mapped out their village in a traditional ‘hufendorf’ style of long blocks crossing their Tanunda Creek water source. Bethany’s village reserve is the perfect place for a picnic lunch. Stop for a moment at the beautiful Herberge Christi Lutheran Church with its traditional thatched barn and post and rail fence relocated from nearby farms. You can get a vivid taste of history just up the road at Bethany Wines, where the Schrapel family planted their first vines in 1852, or on your way back to Tanunda at Turkey Flat Winery, whose vineyards include some of the oldest vines in the region.
this small town, which remarkably has four different Lutheran churches. Now a town of around 4000 people, Tanunda grew from the tiny neighbouring village of Langmeil, which was laid out in long narrow strips allowing the early settlers access to the waters of the North Para River. The village spread along its then main street Langmeil Road, which runs parallel to the river, and among its original buildings are the dark ironstone cottages and barns of the early settlers, many of which still remain. Tanunda is home to the Barossa Visitor Centre, an ideal starting point for any visit to the Barossa. Located at 66–68 Murray Street (the main street) it is open seven days a week. The town also boasts a number of wineries, including Peter Lehmann Wines, Langmeil, Richmond Grove, Lambert Estate and Château Tanunda, with its impressive buildings and grounds, located next to the Tanunda railway station. One of the roads that connect Tanunda and Angaston climbs up Menglers Hill, where a large lookout provides an excellent vantage point to appreciate the vineyards and the richness of the Barossa Valley.

At Light Pass you will find some of the most authentic buildings in the Barossa region. Marananga and Seppeltsfield map references E4 and D4 If you were looking to condense the best of the Barossa into one small area, it would have to be Seppeltsfield Road. Here food, wine, music, accommodation and religion all come together in a remarkably small stretch of road – decorated with an avenue of huge date palms that were planted to provide work for local families during the Great Depression. The central landmark is Seppeltsfield Winery, founded in 1851 and still a showcase for fine wines, including its fabulous storehouse of fortified wines, which can be tasted on a special tour. For arts enthusiasts, Shakespeare in the Vines is an annual mid-summer event at the winery each January long weekend. Some people know Marananga just because of its famous brass band, which you can listen to in rehearsal most Tuesday nights. Marananga is interesting historically with its renaming in 1918 reflecting the anti-German sentiment in South Australia during World War I. Previously the village was known as Gnadenfrei, meaning ‘freed by the grace of God’ in German – a name that lives on at the Gnadenfrei Lutheran Church. Visit www.seppeltsfieldroad.com for more information about Marananga and Seppeltsfield.

Gibson Winery, Light Pass
Greenock map reference D4 In the past, Barossa villages used to be defined by their churches. They’re still important, of course, but at Greenock it’s the pub that attracts most souls. In the centre of town the mill and silos still stand as a reminder of the days when Greenock served as a hub for the grain trade and was known as ‘little Scotland in the Barossa’, due to its mostly Scottish settlers. In fact, the name Greenock literally means ‘sunny hill’ and is derived from the Gaelic words, Grain (meaning ‘sun’) and Cnoc (meaning ‘hill’).
Town founder William Coulthard’s original bluestone home ‘Coulthard House’, opposite the police station, is worth a look; Nuriootpa grew and prospered around this property and the generosity of its owner. The peaceful North Para River meanders through town and Nuriootpa Linear Park provides a delightfully scenic riverside walk from Coulthard Reserve to Tolley Reserve on the Barossa Valley Way – both ideal spots to settle down for a picnic or barbecue lunch with regional produce bought from the main street baker or butcher.
Light Pass Nuriootpa
map reference F4
Nuriootpa’s name is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting place’, as large numbers of Aboriginal people once gathered here to trade. It is still recognised as the commercial centre of the Barossa and ‘Nuri’ is right at the centre of the region’s wine production.
Just outside Light Pass, at the intersection of Light Pass Road and Kalimna Road, there’s a small monument surrounded by vineyards that strikes home the historic nature of this region. It’s a monument to Colonel William Light and Captain Charles Sturt, two of the most iconic names in South Australia’s pioneer history, who came through here in the 1830s.
This is a growing town with a population of around 5500 that services more than 50 wineries in the nearby area. Some of the best known cellar doors are found here, including Elderton, Wolf Blass and Penfolds – where want-to-be winemakers can design their own blend on a daily tour.
Light was looking for a pass east through the ranges to the Murray River and subsequently Light Pass, a small settlement based on two Lutheran churches, was established in 1844. It proves how important it is in the Barossa to drive onto the back roads and explore.
A visit to the Barossa Bushgarden is also recommended – this community project is successfully growing plants that are indigenous to the area, while the Bush Chapel at Coulthard Reserve is a place for quiet reflection or celebration.
Here you’ll find some of the most authentic buildings remaining in the region, including the original tiny mud and straw schoolhouse built in 1846 and now known as Luhrs Cottage Museum – open to the public seven days a week.

map reference G3 This village, laid out near the entrance to the original Lights Pass, was founded in 1853 by English migrant Samuel Stockwell, who bought the land from George Fife Angas and subdivided it into town blocks. Before long it had a Lutheran church and school, and being on a busy stock route pioneered in the late 1830s the town soon had a number of stores, a blacksmith, bootmakers, a post office and
hotel. The hotel, built in 1867, has earned a fine reputation for its dining room and classic country pub front bar.
Truro map reference H3 At the north-eastern end of the region, Truro lies in the ranges 14 kilometres from Nuriootpa. John Angas, a son of George Fife Angas, surveyed the area in the mid 1800s and named the town Truro, after a town in Cornwall. While copper was successfully mined here, the lack of capital and high water table, plus the discovery of gold in Victoria quickly saw the mines’ demise. However, the fertile land soon grew the area’s reputation for cereal cropping and sheep grazing. The town has recently become a focus for lovers of olives and it’s worth taking a look at the House of Olives on the Main Road. Craneford Wines is open for tasting and sales of premium wines daily. History buffs can visit the Sturt Memorial Cairn in the main street – one of a chain of commemorative cairns erected in 1944 along the route of the famous expedition to Central Australia led by Captain Charles Sturt. Alternatively, simply explore the interesting buildings dating back to the 1850s.
Penrice map reference F5 Just a short distance north of Angaston, Penrice was originally known as German Pass but became to be settled by Cornish migrants who named it after their homeland. Its elevated position provides exceptional views. The Union Chapel on Penrice Road, built in 1844, is claimed to be the oldest surviving church in the Barossa. Sponsored by George Fife Angas, in the hope that all Christians would form a single church, the chapel has, at various times, been a dance hall, fruit storehouse, home and shearing shed. It has now been restored by the local community and is a popular venue for weddings, christenings and other events.

There’s a real buzz in Murray Street thanks to the vibrant cafés, wine bars, cellar doors, smart little antique and traditional shops.
Surrounded by rolling hills and stands of ancient red gums, you can see why Eden Valley is known as the ‘Garden of Grapes and Gums’. It is now highly regarded for its vineyards – with famous names such as Henschke, Mountadam and Pewsey Vale taking residence – and boasts a reputation for some of Australia’s finest cool climate red and white wines.
Angaston is home to some of the Barossa’s best food. Whether it’s a coffee and brunch, a light meal matched with a wine-tasting experience or a main meal there are options. You need to be prepared to take home loads of local produce from Angaston... there’s plenty to choose from at the Barossa Farmers Market each Saturday morning, or throughout the week at the Barossa Valley Cheese Company, Blond Coffee, SA Company Store, Schulz Butchers (home of Australia’s best bacon), Gully Gardens and Angas Park. At the eastern end of the Barossa, Angaston was named after one of SA’s founders, George Fife Angas, who sponsored many of the region’s German settlers. The Angas family was a major influence for many generations, with one of their homes, Collingrove, now a popular attraction. There is a selection of bed and breakfasts, both hosted and self-contained – you’ll need a rest after all the activity. For more information about Angaston visit www.angaston.org.au

Springton map reference G10 A hamlet set among the rolling hills of the Barossa Ranges, Springton was originally known as Black Springs and is recognised primarily because the earliest European settler, Friedrich Herbig, lived in a hollowed-out red gum that still stands in the main street. Herbig, a German tailor turned farmer, arrived in South Australia in 1855 and travelled to the Barossa where he leased 80 acres of land from George Fife Angas. Desperately poor, he decided to live in the now famous Herbig Family Tree, where the first two of his 16 children were born. From these humble beginnings, Herbig went on to dominate the early life of the town, eventually owning more than 400 hectares of land. While the area’s lush green pastures have supported dairy farming for many years, its soil and cool climate has made it excellent for viticulture, with white grape varieties winning special recognition. There’s a great country pub and a restaurant in Bucks Bistro that make Springton worth a stop.

Its peaceful demeanour is broken only once a year when it becomes the service park for the Rally SA motor event, where team service crews rebuild their rally cars before you can even finish a sandwich – you can get a close look at both cars and their drivers. Mount Pleasant map reference F11 While nobody is exactly sure how the town got its name, there seems to be some consensus that it was probably named after a Mrs Pleasant who was a relative of one of the early settlers. These settlers moved into the area in the late 1830s with flocks of sheep and bags of grain. These days you’ll also see more contemporary additions, such as goats and alpacas. This is a pretty country town, with a population of around 500, but is still home to one of the state’s largest agricultural shows.
Surrounding towns Freeling Freeling is the heart of some of the best cereal farming land in Australia. Once famous for its enormous haystacks, which could be seen for miles, Freeling owes some of its current fame to a hit TV drama, McLeod’s Daughters. Fans of the series can stop for a photo in front of the Gungellan Truck Stop in Hanson Street or pop into the Gungellan Hotel to drink at the same bar that was filmed in the series. The township of Freeling was surveyed in March 1860. Today, there is a fantastic heritage walk, developed by the Historical Society of Freeling, taking in many of the significant heritage buildings, including the Eudunda Farmers Building and the old State Bank.
Kapunda For such a small country town, Kapunda, on the northern edge of the Barossa, has an extraordinary history, stemming from its days as a rich copper mining centre with a strong Celtic background. A landmark eight-metre bronze statue, known as Map Kernow or Son of Cornwall, is a symbol of these heady days. Kapunda’s heyday wealth has been wellpreserved in the large houses and elegant buildings that characterised the town during the 1850s and 1860s. The Kapunda Visitor Information Centre has an interpretive centre, art gallery, craft shop and library with family history records. There’s also a 10 kilometre Heritage Trail Drive that takes visitors past the mine site, parks and gardens, homesteads, churches and buildings. When the copper mine closed in 1879, the town became the centre for a thriving pastoral industry and later the home of the world’s largest private landowner, Sir Sidney Kidman – the cattle king. Kapunda Museum on Hill Street, is one of Australia’s finest folk museums and is home to well-preserved and restored agricultural machines, vehicles and furniture, as well as thousands of other artefacts. Kapunda also has a range of accommodation providers and dining options, as well as a few hotels that serve as good watering holes after a long day of travelling.
